IDSystems sponsors Martin Donnelly & his son in the Lotus Cup racing series

IDSystems, glass innovations, are proud to be sponsoring Martin Donnelly and his son Stefan in their bid to take on the Lotus Cup racing series this year.

Company News Ultracrete, part of the Instarmac Group, will be showcasing its range of HAPAS approved Highways Maintenance solutions at Surveyor’s annual Highway Maintenance conference

at The Nottingham Belfry on 30th May.

Martin Donnelly is a much loved character in the world of racing – having entered the world of F1 as a racing driver in 1989 for Lotus and suffering a serious accident that cut short his promising racing career, Martin has remained in the world of racing, working closely with Lotus and their racing clubs. His passion for the Lotus Elise and its racing abilities is unparalleled and his knowledge and experience is widely sought after from everyone connected with the cars and this year he is passing his knowledge onto his son Stefan by racing alongside him. “Martin and Johnny Herbert are great guys with a strong friendship that dates back to both their racing days.  With Martin firmly entrenched in the Lotus Racing and Johnny Herbert now commentating for Sky coverage of the F1 racing, it was an absolute joy to spend a day in their company at Brands Hatch recently, hearing stories of old and new and bearing witness to the fans

taking the opportunity to get their autographs. They also demonstrated their undying passion and skills as racing drivers when they took to the track to ‘see what the car could do’.  We were then thrilled to be part of the Awards for the winners in the Lotus racing circuit from 2013 where the love for these guys was evident from everyone involved on the night.” Elaine Hunter, Director of IDSystems  Based in Norfolk, Lotus has incredibly strong foundations and their attention to performance and engineering is outstanding.  Walking around their factory in Hethel – just outside of Norwich, it is clear to see the precision manufacturing is beautifully combined with innovative engineering.  By taking the Lotus tour, you can also discover the history and heritage of Lotus as you follow each step in the creation of their magnificent machines, and take a walk through the years that saw the company develop from a shed-based one-man operation into the automotive

thoroughbred it is today, and the exciting prospects that lay ahead. It is here that we see the parallels formed and reasons behind IDSystems decision to sponsor a Lotus racing team.  The story of starting from nothing to running a successful well oiled machine of a business today is true of both companies, and the attention to detail is perfectly reflected.  IDSystems constantly strive to stay ahead of the competition, taking on the ever tightening building regulations and innovating systems that not only meet regulations, but surpass them; compiling a range of glass solutions for every aspect from frameless internal glazed partitions to folding and sliding doors that are as strong and durable as they are flexible and easy to use.  With a comprehensive range of systems that build up to the highly engineered and skilfully manufactured SF75 with its unique multi-chambered thermal break that systematically breaks down the cold transfer from outside to inside to practically zero!  Yet still offers flexible combinations opening both inward or outwardly with doors in any direction desired, and easily housing a high specification triple glazed unit – it achieves the enviable u-Values of less than 1.0 W/m2. Denso void filler solves corrosion traps Scottish and Southern Energy were concerned that a build-up of moisture in small, difficult to access gaps at Sloy Power Station could lead to corrosion. The problem areas were the narrow gaps between the main water supply pipes and their concrete supports. Following recommendations from anticorrosion specialists Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd they chose to use Denso Void Filler to fill these confined areas and therefore prevent the risk of corrosion. Winn & Coales Denso Void Filler is based on a microcrystalline petrolatum containing corrosion inhibitors and moisture repellents. It forms a permanently flexible medium for the encapsulation and protection of bearings, tendons, stay cables, among many other applications. ENQUIRY-Card 102 ENQUIRY-Card 103

06 Company & Product News . March 2014 .

The recent downpours & subsequent floods have left vast areas of the country in a sodden mess and the clean-up looks set to last a while… For many, the effects of flooding have been devastating; homes have been wrecked and lives have been turned upside down but, on a more positive note, insurance companies are appearing more willing and able than they were during the floods of 2007. After a summit, in response to the Prime Minister urging insurance companies to deal with flood claims quickly, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) reported that there are 2,000 loss adjusters to assess the damage caused by flood waters and 1,800 staff reassigned to deal with customer queries. With everyone who has been affected by flooding wanting to get back to normal as quickly as

possible, the demand for post-flood remedial work is, quite understandably, high. Now, more than ever, it’s essential to provide a quick and professional quotation to secure the work; especially as a lot of the costs are being footed by insurance companies. Pricing remedial work for flood damage, where each job can be so varied and unknown, is not a simple task. Some corrective works will need floors taken up and replaced; these could be chipboard, floating, laminated or possibly even concrete floors. Some walls might need the bottom area of plaster removed and replaced,  along with skirting and possibly architraves, door linings, door stops and maybe

even doors and carpet steps. Some might have kitchens, soil pipe boxing the list is endless... This is where Easy Price Pro’s Total Build Ultimate program really comes into its own; it has over 160 different estimating modules created to quickly and easily price work with as little information from the user as possible. And, in light of recent events, Easy Price Pro has picked the relevant modules required for pricing remedial work and have created the Total Build – Flood Damage Repair™ program. They are also going that bit further so you can too… Easy Price Pro are making a new flood protection estimating job module, this new module will price flood gates to doors, fitting air

vent covers, foul drainage, non-return valves and so on. The demand for flood protection work is likely to be extensive and it may not be something you’ve needed to price before – this new module is designed to help with that. Total Build – Flood Damage Repair™ works in the same straightforward way as all Easy Price Pro program; bring the relevant estimating job modules onto the pricing sheet, enter the basic information about the work into clearly marked boxes and the program will calculate all labour, plant and material costs for you. You can fine-tune details to suit your preferences and have complete control over the mark-ups and overheads. Once the work is priced the program will generate a complete set of professional reports including a written quotation, payment and work schedules, a bill of quantities, material order list and more – all at the click of a button! You have instant access to every possible professional report ready for your client or their insurance company. If you’ve been flooded with quotes speak to Easy Price Pro today and find out how you can stay on top of your estimates and be in a position to quickly and accurately price and secure post-flood work. The Hewden accommodation units provide a great opportunity to communicate to various audiences, whether that is clients, contractors, or the general public. An excellent branding/ advertising opportunity for the building / housing contractors on site, especially where contractors are on-site for a long time period with major build projects.

Working with Birmingham based signage contractor Hollywood Monster, Hewden set a brief to create a unique full 32’ by 10’ wrap, in addition to a second option incorporating a framed space design that will allow bespoke messages to be posted. Steve McNulty Hewden Accommodation Manager said: “Like the rest of my team, I’m

passionate about our accommodation units. We do recognise however that a 32’ grey cabin, may not, to the outside world, seem like the most attractive of products. “We have, for a number of years, offered customers the option of branding where we paint the unit in our customers’ livery. We now know from our research that customers would like to see more interesting and exciting options and we are now able to deliver those.” Hewden Marketing Director Jeff Schofield added: “ The innovative concepts created by Hollywood Monster will offer Hewden customers a new and exciting option when considering hiring a branded accommodation unit. “The vinyl wrap can provide a real impact on site to contractors, clients and in some cases the general public. We are especially pleased with the ad board option, as this is a cost effective, high impact way of displaying and communicating key on-site messages, which may be relevant to the project. “Examples of these could include health and safety, site rules, company on site communications or just a standard Customer brand advert.”

With a rated input of 800 W, the FEIN Solid class is available in three models designed for disc diameters of 115 mm and 125 mm, the lightest of which weighs in at just 2 kilograms. The solid metal gearbox can be rotated through 90 degrees to optimise the switch position for either grinding or cutting. Products in the FEIN Power class are designed for effective cutting and grinding. Offering 400 W more input than similar tools in the Solid range, they also benefit from a number of safety features including a soft start function; a no volt release switch to prevent unintended restarts after any power supply interruptions; a KickBack stop which shuts the tool down if

the disc catches, preventing it from spinning in the user’s hand; and electronic overload protection, which prevents the motor from being damaged. The stainless steel FEIN Inox class features variable speed settings, which can be set electronically between 2500 and 7900 rpm. Thanks to the FEIN ‘Powertronic’ electronics, this machine is also stable at low speeds making it ideal for grinding, satin-finishing and brushing stainless steel. Chris Bull, Managing Director for FEIN UK commented: “All FEIN compact angle grinders are made in Germany, backed by more than 100 years of experience – Our range offers impressive durability, with a carbon brush life up to 30 per cent longer than similar performance class products from our competitors. This is due to the innovative brushes themselves, creating a low temperature on the armature. This is thanks to optimum ventilation and low vibrations from the carefully designed gearbox and motor. PAINTING WORKWEAR New safety footwear range Dickies, the internationally renowned workwear brand, has introduced 14 new styles of safety footwear and improved a further six styles for 2014. New lines in PU/Rubber Sole have excellent shock absorption and are heat resistant to 300 degrees; they are high slip resistant and have non clogging sole patterns; extra comfort is offered with moisture wicking lining and a removable footbed. Dickies have also introduced an ESD trainer for the first time, the Alford trainer, which is suitable for people working in the electronics industry as ESD footwear provides a safe and controlled method of discharging static electricty that accumulates in your body. Safety footwear standard EN345 has been superseded by EN ISO 20345 and the whole Dickies footwear range has been re-cerfified to the new standard EN ISO 20345:2011. Wasi Ullah, buyer at Dickies commented: “The most important element of any item of working apparel is its comfort and durability. This is especially important with regards to safety footwear, more so when you consider that most

tradesmen could spend up to nine hours a day working in their footwear. So any safety footwear not only has to be comfortable and provide support to the wearer’s foot but also be strong enough to withstand the rigours of the modern working environment. “Over the past couple of years the main trend has been for safety footwear to become lighter in weight and more fashionable, which really started with the use of injected PU sole units. The introduction of composite toecaps and composite material mid-plates has accelerated this demand. Other market requirements which we have noticed are the need for the upper profile of safety footwear to be lower. The problem with the design of safety footwear is that these styles need a toecap, which creates a more rounded shape to the upper, but the trend nowadays is for safety footwear to look less like an item of safety footwear. Part of the solution is to reduce the shape of the upper profile by applying it lower into the sole unit. This allows for a lower profile footwear style, such as the Faxon Trainer.”

All Wrapped Up When working in the great outdoors it is important to ensure you have the correct outer and inner layer clothing for the task in hand. Dickies work coats and jackets have

Painting is a perfect opportunity for flecks of paint, dirt and debris to become lodged in

your eye. Do not give them the chance, instead wear safety goggles while you are painting. Dickies safety goggles are lightweight and full vision, with anti-fog, anti-scratch coated lenses, and the wide elastic strap is fully adjustable to enable a perfect fit and comfort.

NEW Flame retardant range Dickies have recently launched a brand new Flame Retardant range for 2014 with safety being the driving force behind it with exciting new design features and introducing new and innovative fabrics into the market. Clever design innovations such as Ergonomic knee pad pockets and a comfort waistband feature in the premium products. The comfort waistband allows

These work coats and jackets are available in a variety of styles and colours and will offer varying levels of protection from the wind, rain and cold. The most popular and practical option is usually a black work coat, as dark colour options are always the preferred choice when it comes to washing your workwear jacket less frequently. New for autumn Dickies have the Fulton Contract Jacket it is waterproof to 3000mm, seams stitched and taped, zip front with storm cuff, two welt pockets, one zip chest pocket, zip embroidery

workers to individually adjust their coverall waist for an exact fit whilst also improving the crotch area and resultant leg lengths, helping to improve appearance and crucially movement and safety. The existing styles have been revised in both fit and sizes and Dickies have grown the range of coveralls up to 15 and additionally now offer base layers, jackets, trousers, shirts, bib and braces and parka’s in a wide range of FR fabrics such Proban, Pyrovatex, Modacrylics and Aramids all certificated to the latest appropriate EN Standards. The FR market is being driven by the oil, gas and energy industry and so with a growing export market Dickies have made the range suitable for the wider range of climates experienced around the

access and cuff adjusters. If it is the cold that is the problem for your working day, we advise you consider a Dickies workwear fleece. Full zip, half zip or pullover fleece work tops are available within the Dickies range of warm and comfortable workwear. Alternatively a good quality bodywarmer is always a popular option. Waterproofs are also a key garment for outdoor working, particularly with the weather in the UK being consistently wet and miserable. And, as you would expect, Dickies have this covered too. Making 2014 The Year of Colour for Woodcare Think about paint and colour and you’ll probably automatically think of interiors – but, when used outdoors, eye-catching shades can deliver even more impact. When used on wood, bold, bright colours can make a place warmer, more welcoming – and much more attractive. Combining colour and wood protection needs some thought to ensure the colour is matched correctly – and the system delivers the necessary protection.

To help decorating professionals make informed choices about colour, Sadolin has produced a video dedicated to the subject. Entitled ‘The Sadolin Colour Palette – Great Shades and Wood Protection As Standard’ the film explores the sheer range of colour opportunities available. The video is available to view on the Sadolin website at or on the Sadolin

Woodcare YouTube channel at user/Sadolin Woodcare As well as identifying ways to achieve sensational shades, the subjects of translucency and opacity are also covered in the film. The video is supported by the Sadolin Superdec Colour Guide, designed to show decorators how this opaque wood protection product offers the freedom to transform wood, with over 300 available shades. Sharon Smith, Sadolin’s Brand Manager, said: “It would be great to see more colour used in 2014, as it brings so much to the environment. “Decorators are familiar with the usual woodtones, but many don’t realise that we also offer many other inspirational shades available – and choosing these colours in no way compromises the performance of the products.” “Our video and colour guide have been developed to enable decorators to get the complete picture on Sadolin Superdec - and introduce more colour to outdoor projects. Sadolin Superdec offers superior colour retention qualities, achieved by the use of specially selected light-filtering pigments to ensure longer-lasting shades. It offers up to eight years’ protection against the elements, and superb flexibility - achieving a solid, paint-like finish that won’t flake or peel. Furthermore, Sadolin Superdec requires very little preparation, is self-priming on new timber and can also be applied over existing woodstain or paint. The new colour guide also refers to

Store staff answer Charity SOS call A PROJECT which delivered a free overhaul of a charity’s offices in just a day has been supported by staff at a Brentford painting and decorating store. McDaid, Manager at Brentford Crown Decorating Centre lead a team of staff who organised the delivery of supplies to the Charity SOS project at the offices of the Down’s Syndrome Association in Teddington, Middlesex. The Charity SOS project provides a charitable organisation with a free office overhaul in a day and is led by workplace consultants Morgan Lovell – experts in office design and re-fit. A donation of paint and supplies from Crown Paints was organised and delivered by Mr McDaid and his team,

who ensured the products were at the Langdon Down Centre – the former home of pioneering Victorian physician Dr John Langdon Down, after whom Down’s Syndrome was named – in time for the start of the project in December. Mr McDaid said: “When we were approached to support such a great cause the whole team were happy to help out in any way we could. “We got the delivery together in-store and ordered in a few items to make sure everything would be available and we could get it all to the site in plenty of

time. “Everyone in the store was keen to get on board and support the Charity SOS project. We were all proud to have played a part in it and delighted that everything went smoothly on the day.” More than 100 people worked throughout the day to create an entirely new suite of offices for the staff at the Langdon Down Centre. The staff joined volunteers who helped on the day for a special celebration evening to see the unveiling of the new offices. Locate your nearest branch at or

EGGER enhances its flooring portfolio with the launch of an improved foil for Peel Clean Xtra EGGER UK has improved its flooring portfolio with the creation of a new protective cover for EGGER Peel Clean Xtra.

Ultra Floor Flying High at Manchester Airport Ultra Floor’s Level IT Two, high flow smoothing underlayment been used to transform part of the Premier Inn at Manchester Airport. The concrete substrate was primed prior to the application of Level IT Two to help stop any moisture from the wet underlayment passing through to the porous subfloor which can cause pinholes. Level IT Two was then applied by trowel to the prepared area to a depth of 8mm. Level IT Two is a two part smoothing underlayment with exceptional flow characteristics which makes it very easy to apply to most common substrates in both commercial and domestic flooring projects. The cured product has excellent surface strength and will tolerate foot traffic with minimal damage, making it ideal for both small and large projects where floor coverings may not be installed for several days after application. It also comes with our unique Lifetime guarantee, which has been specifically designed to give customers complete peace of mind on every chipboard floor they lay.”

Backed by the EGGER Advanced Lifetime Guarantee, Peel Clean Xtra is an enhanced moisture-resistant, P5 flooring grade chipboard covered with a new stronger and more robust foil. It provides added underfoot surface grip and offers up to 42 days protection against the effects of site traffic, wet trades and weathering on installation. Equally well-suited to new-build or refurbishment projects, Peel Clean Xtra is supplied as tongue and grooved panels covered with an enhanced anti-slip, easy-to-peel, polythene foil. By design the new advanced foil has a tighter fit to board edges to help prevent lifting and because it’s stronger, it’s also less likely to tear under general site conditions, which protects the integrity and overall

performance of the board, even when used in damp or light rain conditions. Once the building is wind and water tight and general interior work is complete, the foil is easily peeled away to reveal a permanent and consistent waxed surface finish, which also helps to provide a moisture barrier for added protection. The foil can be easily recycled through a polythene recycling process. The Peel Clean Xtra boards are profiled using diamond tipped tooling for greater precision and stronger, tighter fitting joints when used in conjunction with EGGER’s Joint & Joist D4 Adhesive and the Advanced Structural Fitting Method. EGGER building specification manager, Daniel Clarke, explains: “Our new tougher foil offers extra protection from the rigours of a

market, HardieFloor. The patented fibre cement, tongue and groove boards are perfectly suited to residential building projects, as a substitute for unreliable chipboard. HardieFloor provides house builders with a durable solution to the issue of having to install a crash deck floor after first lift and then having to safeguard it from the weather. It negates the use of chipboard with a plastic, supposedly weather tight, film which can bring about a host of on-site issues, such as swelling and the associated costly and timely remedial works. Instead this new fibre cement floor - which is impervious to all weather types - dries out completely if wet and suffers no long term damage. Unlike with timber, tiles can be applied directly on to HardieFloor boards eliminating the need for additional membranes and adhesive. ENQUIRY-Card 121 ENQUIRY-Card 122 ENQUIRY-Card 123

Unique colour, awarding WINNING DEVELOPMENT Freefoam, a leading manufacturer of a wide range of innovative products for the building industry in UK, Ireland and Mainland Europe, provided a bespoke shade of grey for the roofline of awarding winning Linden Homes development at Graylingwell Park, Chichester.

Using its innovative Colormax technology Freefoam manufactured a new colour called Quartz Grey to exactly match specified windows and doors. Freefoam New Build Manager Chris Fenney explained “As preferred supplies of roofline products to Linden Homes we already have a close working relationship and on this large development we were asked to provide fascia and soffit in an identical shade to already specified window frames and doors. We were able to assess the colour composition of these items and use our expert knowledge to blend a unique mix of stabilisers and pigments to create an exact colour match” The UK is beginning to see a significant shift change in specification from white roofline to colour. In Continental Europe most windows are coloured and in Ireland about fifty percent. In the UK colour sales have doubled in the last fifteen years to 20% and this trend is

predicted to only increase in the coming years. Freefoam is the colour specialist. Recognising the growing importance of colour for architects, specifiers, and house developers Freefoam seized the opportunity 12 years ago and generated its patented ColormaxTM technology using an advanced master-batching process with a blend of natural PVC and pigments to simultaneously co-extrude PVC building products. Freefoam offer a wide range of ten colours with built in colourfastness, colour variety, and reliable colour matching all with a ten year guarantee. The majority of colours are available straight from stock with no lead time, and come with matching fixing accessories. Freefoam has made colour roofline a natural alternative to white and a realistic proposition for all house builders. Colin St John, UK General Manager explained “This development by Linden Homes is a perfect example of how Freefoam is responding to the changing house building market. We offer a solution to smaller and medium sized builders with our off the shelf range and give specifiers of larger developments the opportunity to match roofline to other external elements. Freefoam products give all house builders the ability to add colour, creating attractive long lasting homes for today’s discerning house buyers” ENQUIRY-Card 538

Jutland comes to Somerset! IKOslate, the sustainable Wolf trusses chosen for new Singing in the rain with A new housing development in Norbord’s Sterling OSB Roofcoat East Yorkshire Village Hall choice to natural slate Flat roofers will no longer fear those Somerset is benefitting from the sleek 40m2 of IKOslate composite roof tiles from IKO PLC have been installed on a new garage at a house in Sheffield, to not only complement the original slate roof of the main house, but to provide a cost effective, sustainable alternative to slate. Gordon Liddle of Aztec Shopfitting and Building Contractors said, “I suggested IKOslate to my client as he was keen to use recycled products and as they are manufactured from 99% recycled and re-engineered materials, they fitted the bill. He is extremely pleased with the results.” The garage was partially destroyed when a neighbour, whilst renovating the property next door, undermined the footings of the dividing wall and garage situated on the property boundary. The garage suffered a majority collapse and therefore had to be rebuilt from scratch.

Turner Timber Frame, has provided Wolf Systems roof trusses for the construction of the new village hall in Paull, East Yorkshire. Located alongside Paull’s historic Grade II listed lighthouse (now a private dwelling), the new building is a timberframe L-shaped structure with a central entrance hall. Besides the bespoke timber frame panels, Turner Timber also supplied the roof trusses which were designed and fabricated using Wolf software and nailplates at its factory in Hull. These included complicated splayed trusses used to support the corner detail of the roof over the entrance hall. Turner Timber Frame was founded more than 25 years ago by time-served joiner Malcolm Turner who began manufacturing timber frame panels in his home garage. ENQUIRY-Card 128 ENQUIRY-Card 129

Britain’s unpredictable weather costs builders thousands of lost hours every year. In the flat-roofing sector, Oriented Strand Board such as Sterling OSB has long been a popular decking material, but even the moisture-resistant grades can deteriorate quickly if soaked by a Great British downpour. Sterling OSB Roofcoat solves this problem at a stroke. With its weather resistant waxy surface shedding water like the proverbial duck’s back, it is the perfect answer for flat roof usage where traditional roofing felt is the preferred choice. “It’s clearly advisable to make a structure weather tight as quickly as possible” comments Norbord’s brand marketing manager, Mike Buick.

Kemper System helps Huddersfield Uni Build on Bio-Diversity Liquid roofing and waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, has helped enhance both bio-diversity and energy efficiency at Huddersfield University by working collaboratively with the roofing contractor and green roof specialist on a series of new build green and warm roofs. Huddersfield University has invested in the construction of four new buildings designed by architects, Watson Batty, including a new sports hall, Dean’s office and corporate suite. Constructed with a single steel frame, all the buildings adjoin each other but rise to different heights. Green roofs were specified for three areas, including the new sports hall, and a warm roof was selected for the corporate suite. Kemper System worked closely with the architects, the roofing

The roof build up was inverted by applying the FLL certified rootresistant Kemperol V210 waterproofing membrane first, followed by the insulation, the blue roof drainage reservoir and then the growing medium. Explains Nick O’Mara from Cawston Roofing: “This project demonstrates how important it is to consider specification decisions in a holistic sense rather than thinking about material costs in isolation. For the green roof system, avoiding the need for a SUDS system saved time, money and costs on site. For the waterproofing membrane, using Kemperol V210 meant that we could be more flexible with the programme and more creative with the roof build up as well as providing an FLL certified rootresistant and robust waterproofing membrane with a BBA certified service life in excess of 25 years.”

floor for Mosque renovation

Innovative insulation manufacturer, Jablite has developed a new insulation that can be bespoke-designed to create drainage falls on flat roofs. Jablite Invincible combines the benefits of a highly performing thermal insulation material - EPS (expanded polystyrene) - with a tough facing which protects the insulation and is highly resistant to damage. “Our customers were telling us they want to use our A+ rated* EPS roof insulation. But, because it can be damaged by solvents it does not offer the flexibility they need on site,” says Richard Lee, Managing Director of Jablite. Jablite Invincible provides a layer of protection between the thermal insulation – the EPS – and the waterproof membrane, adding stability to the membrane ensuring maximum performance and extending its lifetime.

Panel Systems, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of Styrofoam insulation, has secured a major new order to upgrade the thermal performance of Shipley Educational Mosque in Bradford. After being specified by Warmfloors, Panel Systems supplied Styrofoam insulation for the buildings new under floor heating system. 240m2 of grooved Styrofoam was required to insulate the under floor heating system, which was split into five zones to make the building warmer and to retain more heat. Panel Systems provided specialist cutting and routing services to suit the needs of the complex pipework for the under floor heating system. Working closely with WarmFloors, a specialist underfloor heating installation company, Panel Systems supplied the Styrofoam insulation to the mosque within a very tight timeframe, ensuring there was minimal disruption to visitors to the mosque, which enabled the building to remain open throughout. Knauf Insulations Changing Rooms London based housing association, Guinness South – part of The Guinness Partnership, embarked on an ambitious energy refurbishment program across 80 of its Victorian street properties to improve the thermal performance, using Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell® Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) system. As one of the largest affordable housing and care providers in the country, Guinness South looked to upgrade its tenants’ kitchens and bathrooms on the Mortlake Estate, in West London to provide them with modern facilities and warmer homes. Rolston Dennis, Planned Maintenance Surveyor for Guinness South

said: “Although our initial plan was to install new bathroom suites and kitchen units, we recognised the need to upgrade the energy performance of overall and thought this was a perfect opportunity to take advantage of reducing our residents’ energy consumption across the board. Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell IWI

system was perfect for this project as it is simple to install and could be fitted on a roomby-room basis. Furthermore, the ThermoShell IWI system is very flexible and has allowed for plumbing, heating, electrical & carpentry contractors to work around each other. As all contractors have been able to coordinate

with one another on the project, it has meant that the works carried out have not affected our residents’ wellbeing and living space – a very important aspect for us.” Specifically designed for upgrading solid wall properties, Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell IWI system is BBA certified and provides the most effective solution to ‘whole house-low energy’ refurbishments, by delivering outstanding thermal performance and comfort through a very straightforward and easy to use installation process. The simplicity of the ThermoShell IWI system allows a competent tradesman to become an approved installer, and to install and finish the system using a traditional plaster skim finish or dry lining techniques. No scaffolding is required and the system can be installed on a room-by-room basis, or as part

of a whole house refurbishment plan. The use of thermally engineered insulated studs (EcoStud) eliminates the thermal bridging issue associated with traditional systems incorporating timber and metal studs. The extruded polystyrene content (XPS) of EcoStuds provide a high level of thermal and moisture resistance, as well as offering a high level of compressive strength. The system incorporates Earthwool® EcoBatts, high performance, water repellent glass mineral wool slabs, that are friction fitted between the EcoStuds to completely fill the available space and deliver benefits over other systems that use rigid insulation boards, which have the potential to cause air leakage if they are not cut and installed accurately. Overall, the ThermoShell IWI system is almost 13 per cent more thermally efficient than a timber stud system of the same thickness. For more information please visit ENQUIRY-Card 544

Insulation Warning: retrofitting could pose thermal Bridging threat

Insulation installers have been warned that it is vital to bring wall junction performance up to overall insulation standards or risk condensation build-up and mould growth.

The stark warning, from Sustainable Building Solutions, part of the Travis Perkins Group, is the result of increased concerns that improved insulation in the UK’s housing stock will result in thermal bridging issues at junctions. The concerns have led to Sustainable Building Solutions, which is actively supporting the Green Deal in its attempts to improve the insulation of the UK’s housing stock, to develop its own technical solution involving improving the thermal performance of the junction in line with the rest of

the wall. Thermal bridging occurs at junctions between elements, such as PVC windows and at interruptions in insulation. When warm internal air bridges the gap with cold external walls there is often a build-up in condensation which can ultimately lead to mould growth. Lee Jackson, an expert in thermal bridging issues at Sustainable Building Solutions, explains. “When a householder insulates a wall a nice warm house is created, but the junction is still performing at a much lower level, which in turn

creates the risk of surface condensation.” He continues: “The paradox is that, in a poorly insulated dwelling, thermal bridging is minimal, but actions to improve the insulation of the dwelling, which the Green Deal is likely to accelerate, increase the potential for thermal bridging with consequential implications for condensation build-up.” The Sustainable Building Solutions remedy is to improve the thermal performance of the junction in line the rest of the wall. “Our modelling demonstrates that the

installation of a small section of high performance insulation directly below the window sill can bring the junction up to the standards of the rest of the wall,” says Mr Jackson. “The window sill has to be removed anyway as part of the insulation process. With our modelling it is clearly demonstrated that this simple process can bring the value of a junction down to 0.012. In turn, this brings the temperature factor up to 0.927 which means there is negligible risk of condensation.” “We are not criticising the

Green Deal in any way. There is clearly a need for improved levels of insulation in the UK’s ageing housing stock, but it is vital that installers bring all aspects of a property’s insulation up to the highest possible standards, which includes addressing thermal bridging issues around junctions, and not just cherrypick the quick wins.”

Tell us your worst plumbing nightmare!

Spring launch for new range

Expensive. Time consuming. And, frankly a right pain in the posterior. Callbacks must be the bane of most plumbers’ lives. It’s especially annoying when it’s not even your fault – some product has let you down. That means you’ve got to take time off a proper paying job to put the problem right. With the added benefit of an earful from the customer. And if there’s one product that you don’t want to let you down it’s a pan connector. That could land you right in it, if it fails – literally! In the nearly fifty years that Multikwik has been making pan connectors, they have convinced installers by giving them the peace of mind of not having to come back to the job. Of course there have been instances where a wrong sized connector was purchased or where they have been installed incorrectly, although with a product this simple it is sometimes hard to see how!

Aqualisa has announced the Spring launch of one its most exciting digital product ranges to date. The digital technology innovator and award-winning manufacturer will unveil brand new ranges of its Quartz Digital and Visage Digital showers, with products scheduled to arrive in store from mid-February. The new ranges, which offer installers a superb alternative to mixer showers, boast a number of up-to-the-minute features, contemporary aesthetics and are easier to install than ever. Marketing Communications Manager, Janet White says, “We are delighted with the enhanced functionality, performance and appearance of our all-new Quartz and Visage Digital ranges and believe they will set the blueprint for a refined digital standard. Bathrooms, Washrooms & Wetrooms 39

Opportunity knocks for retailers to restore marital harmony among customers with Geberit DuoFresh Geberit found that nasty niffs in the bathroom were a problem for 87% of people. The rise in number of en-suite bathrooms in loft conversions and cloakrooms converted from under stairs cupboards is exacerbated the issue, with these spaces often lacking much in the way of natural ventilation. The survey, which looked into the bathroom habits of UK consumers,

found that 29% of respondents are bothered most about odours when using the toilet, with a further 23% of homeowners stating that people not using air freshener after using the bathroom which annoyed them the most. Retailers stocking the Geberit DuoFresh odour extraction system are therefore in a privileged position, not only to be able to extend their profit margins by upselling from a standard framing system, but also to restore harmony to households throughout the country, simply by explaining the virtues of this clever, simple to install, technology to their customers. Bringing a whole new feeling of freshness to the bathroom, Geberit DuoFresh extracts nasty odours from the bathroom without the user even knowing it is there, as it is cleverly concealed within the cistern behind the wall. Even a bathroom that is poorly ventilated will be left with pure fresh air, as active carbon filters clean the air and resupply it to the room. Rather than simply masking an odour as with an air freshener, any lingering unpleasant smells are dealt with directly in the pan, where clean air is gently expelled as soon as the push-button on the flush plate is

activated. Even better, with Geberit DuoFresh even the flush water emits a pleasant smell thanks to a practical insert for in-cistern blocks, which offer a discreet alternative to unsightly rim blocks. While nasty bathroom niffs may not be the easiest subject to talk about with customers, Geberit DuoFresh offers many additional benefits besides leaving the bathroom feeling fresh and clean that are well worth highlighting too. Geberit DuoFresh is less harmful to the environment than having to resort ot using an aerosol, whilst the bathroom will look more uncluttered too, and with no need to open a window in bathrooms that do have nautral venitaltion, customers can save on their heating bills during the colder months too. Furthermore, the system works alongside Geberit’s Sigma dual flush concealed cistern, so it has watersaving credentials too, whilst customers can choose from a range of stylish Sigma 40 flush plates for the finishing touch. close by the pier stretching out into the English Channel, Brighton’s railway station is part of the resort’s most recognisable structures, and an important part of its architectural heritage. When it came to undertaking significant refurbishment work to the building, local conservation officers sought to restore the elements involved to their original splendour, which has led to a member of the Steel Window Association supplying a large number of arch topped doorsets and windows for the work. London based Govette Windows was awarded the contract by Walker Construction under competitive tender, while the Trevor Patrick Partnership was the architectural consultancy leading the design. As pre-contract plans were being formulated, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that the inappropriate aluminium framed glazing which had been fitted in the early eighties could not remain. First large scale carbon neutral development in Scotland uses NorDan windows at Commonwealth Games Village NorDan UK Ltd has supplied high performance energy efficient timber windows and doors for the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village, Glasgow 2014. More than 6500 athletes and officials will stay there for the period of the Games, and afterwards the buildings will revert to a mix of affordable housing with some homes for sale. This forms part of a major regeneration of the East End of Glasgow. The £150m Athletes Village in Glasgow is funded by Glasgow City Council and the

Scottish Government and built by “City Legacy”, a Consortium of contractors including Mactaggart & Mickel, Crudens Building and Renewals and CCG. The architects for this project were RMJM Architects. The result is a transformation of a 35 hectare run down site in the East End of Glasgow in to a much sought after residential area. The homes are designed to the stricter U-values and air tightness demanded by the 2013 Building Regulations for which NorDan’s timber

windows and composite door products are ideal. “Sustainability is key - 10% of the village’s energy will come from renewable energy sources on site, a minimum of 10% recycled materials will be used in the construction”, says Peter O’Neil General Manager in NorDan’s Wishaw office. “The unique design of the accommodation facilities is highly flexible, and allows for relatively simple post games retrofit, which will eventually see a total development of 1500 homes on this site. The first phases will turn the Athletes Village into 400 affordable homes plus 300 for sale.” NorDan is supplying high quality high performance tilt and turn timber windows and fully reversible windows from its NTech 1.2 range External doors are from the NorDan factory at Bor in Sweden, with glazed doors for the ground floors and balconies manufactured at Egersund Norway. Walker profiles completes biggest installation yet in Rehau Total70R Walker Profiles, one of REHAU’s biggest commercial fabricators in Scotland, has completed the largest installation in the UK using the new REHAU TOTAL70R fully reversible window system. More than 1800 fully reversible windows have been installed for Bridgewater Housing Association in 200 properties in Erskine, Renfrewshire to replace pivot timber windows which had come to the end of their life. Motherwell based Walker Profiles

fabricated and installed the windows for Wates Living who are the appointed main contractor for Bridgewater. The windows were all WER B rated in line with the thermal efficiency potential of the properties themselves. Feedback from Bridgewater HA’s tenants about the windows has been hugely positive, largely based around the contemporary styling and the fact that they offer warmth, security and easy operation in what is a very exposed location overlooking the River Clyde. The scope of the project was further enhanced by the replacement of timber residential doors and screens with PVCU doors using the same REHAU TOTAL70 system. Both the doors and windows were manufactured to Secured by Design specification. REHAU’s commercial sales team in Scotland worked closely with Walker Profiles, Wates Living and Bridgewater Housing Association to ensure that the windows met the specification and that the benefits of the new REHAU TOTAL70R were fully realised.

The REHAU TOTAL70R is a contemporary update of REHAU’s successful fully reversible window solution. It has a flush fitting sash and frame, slimmer sightlines than previously and has the potential to achieve a WER A rating if required. It is also compatible with all of the ancillaries in the REHAU TOTAL70 system and can accommodate double or triple glazed units up to 44mm. Walker Profiles became one of the first window companies to start fabricating in the new system when it was launched in 2013, having already built a successful reputation in the Scottish commercial market for the quality of its fully reversible windows. The company has been serving a broad range of clients in the social housing and new build housing sectors in Scotland for more than 15 years. ENQUIRY-Card 568

Kingspan Solar Thermal Supplies Hot Water for Snowdonia Caravan Park For more information visit

Trawsdir is a 5* family-run and maintained Touring & Caravan Park located in Snowdonia National Park in an area of outstanding natural beauty overlooking both Cardigan Bay

and the impressive Lleyn Peninsula. During recent refurbishment work at the Park, local renewable energy installers Arizon Energy, were asked to review options for renewable energy technology, including solar thermal and solar PV. Initial analysis highlighted that the demand for hot water within the shower block was consuming a considerable proportion of the overall energy usage of the Park. Arizon approached Kingspan Solar, part of Kingspan Environmental, to help design a system to provide a reliable source of year-round hot water for the block that could also cope with the heavy seasonal loading placed upon it during peak periods. Kingspan Solar’s specialist design and engineering team designed a dual-purpose solar thermal system that not only heated the domestic potable water for the showers and

Danfoss launches innovative new heat pump As part of its commitment to providing highly efficient, sustainable energy solutions, Danfoss has released a new high capacity ground source heat pump designed for the large domestic property or a simple heating and hot water light commercial application. The latest addition to the DHP-S range, DHP-S Eco has many innovative features to make it work even more efficiently. The heat pump’s peak performance is the result of a newly developed refrigeration circuit, coupled with a new compressor, new refrigerant and the latest generation heat exchanger. Other factors contributing to its high performance are an in-built hot gas exchanger and a new electronic expansion valve. Lars Finne, design manager in R&D at Danfoss said: “The new

Trawsdir, one of Wales’s top Touring and Caravan Parks, located in the beautiful Snowdonia National Park, has embraced renewable energy with the installation of solar technology. Solar thermal now supplies the hot water and feeds the underfloor heating in the shower block, lowering its gas usage and carbon footprint while boosting the Park’s income by around £2,000 per annum.

type of refrigerant and a dedicated scroll compressor has boosted performance to a level that exceeds our expectations. Tests carried out at Danfoss’ test centre in Arvika, Sweden, shows that it outperforms its predecessor by up to 24 per cent on overall efficiency. “ At the same time, we have significantly reduced sound levels by about 5db (A),’ he added. For anyone looking for a more cost effective form of energy for their home or light commercial project, the DHP-S Eco is an attractive proposition, when considering comfort and energy savings. Chris Dale, Director of Danfoss, said: “This is a very exciting addition to our range, which opens up huge opportunities for larger domestic and light commercial projects. With the planned introduction in 2014 of the Renewable Heat Incentive, plus the constantly rising energy costs, the DHP-S Eco is just right for the market and we are expecting a high level of interest.”

DHP-S Eco offers outstanding performance and capacity, combined with optional internet monitoring and a streamlined control system that simplifies operation and keeps costs down. The innovative heat pump system has ‘set and forget’ controls, which ensures hassle-free operation for building owners and managers. Danfoss designs and manufactures a wide range of ground, water and air source heat pumps, which are used for everything from small domestic to large commercial and public sector installations. The company has a network of approved installers who are fully trained to provide design, installation, commissioning and maintenance for its comprehensive range of heat pumps. basins within the block; the excess energy it generated also supplied additional hot water to an underfloor heating system to help dry the shower floors and prevent damp and mould developing. In total, 10 Thermomax Heat Pipe solar thermal collectors were specified covering 28m2, to be placed West/East on each side of the shower block. The Thermomax collectors fed heated Glycol to two 500l Manco stainless steel cylinders and one x 500l Manco stainless steel buffer to the underfloor heating. During the winter months, while there is less solar energy and reduced demand for domestic hot water in the Park, the solar thermal system has been designed to continue to feed warmed water into the underfloor heating as a defence against frozen and burst pipes and to continue to resist the build-up of mould. A year on from the original installation and it is clear that the system is out-performing every expectation. Results collated by Arizon have showed enormous energy savings, far outstripping the initial T*SOL predictions. ENQUIRY-Card 571

EHC Introduce Smart Technology

EHC are committed to providing Products which deliver fully controllable heat at affordable running costs in properties with no access to Mains Gas. For many years our EHC Combination Electric Radiators have been widely accepted as an alternative to traditional storage heating. The major advantage of this reliable system is that they are a 24 hour, fully controllable central heating system which modulates to

maintain a constant room temperature. The radiators look like conventional “wet” system radiators, heat up like conventional “wet” radiators and are 100% efficient. They are maintenance free and do not produce harmful emissions. Each radiator has its own inbuilt thermostat with enables you to control the temperature throughout your home. For complete Control we recommend that each Radiator is hard wired to an EHC Control Box on a dedicated Heating Circuit which is in turn is connected to a 24/7 Programmer and Room Thermostat. To assist with changing lifestyles and spiralling Energy Costs, EHC have adapted the Combination Radiators to enable them to be controlled by easy to install Smart Technology when using our hard wired Control system. The easy to install software can be utilised on a Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone. The ‘User Friendly’ software gives you maximum Control over your Heating System as Heating Cycles and Temperatures can be monitored and controlled remotely with the added benefit of optimised Weather Data via the Internet. The software will also provide you with information regarding your historic data such as room temperatures. BSS BOSS THE RADIATOR Aiding contractors and consultants in coping with increasingly tight budgets while still fulfilling the need for quality is paramount in today’s market, says John Howes, sales consultant for BOSS RIOpanel heating solutions. Robust, good looking and discreet classically designed Scandinavian–style flat fronted radiators have become the must-have, defining look for today’s interiors in new build and existing building stock undergoing modernisation and refurbishment, and in both commercial or domestic settings. However, budgets in all areas are under pressure but any

temptation to buy solely on price for a short-term fix is emphatically not the path to follow. Buying best possible quality radiators is paramount especially in places where robust product with in-built longevity is required. For high occupancy/high traffic areas such as schools, universities, exhibition and showroom sites, student accommodation and hotels, you really need product

that is built to last. Compromise on quality and you end up buying twice, and that is going to hit you in the pocket long term. Innovative heating solutions providers can help find ways of cutting costs without compromising on quality. When it comes to choosing the right radiator for the job, buyers must be able to rely on the expertise of knowledgeable sales consultants who can do more than just arrange for a radiator to be hung on a wall. They need a company that can organise the whole process from project concept, product design and specification through to service backup and delivery. Basically, they need a

provider who can take on the role of project manager. Radiators made from high quality 2mm Scandinavian steel with different tapping solutions for flexible fixing options and a high quality paint finish have to be top of the wish list for buyers. For example, a radiator made from 2mm steel destined for installation in a hospital will withstand a good bash with a bed while one offering 1.2mm thickness will crumple. And, the ‘fit and forget’ attributes of a quality radiator mean the installers can be confident there will be no time-wasting call backs. A heating solutions provider who can think out of the box and is prepared to be flexible is

a valuable resource for any contractor. For example, the prison service recently consulted with BOSS RIOpanel to develop a radiator with no easily detachable parts that might potentially be used as weapons. The BOSS RIOpanel Compact was reengineered with secured side panels and top grille. and now the radiator is in demand at other prisons. BOSS RIOpanel products are exclusively available from BSS, part of the plumbing and heating division of Britain’s largest builders’ merchant group with 60 locations nationwide. A manufacturer who never says no to unusual demands and can adapt its products to curve and angle to fit the demands of any building shape can deal with anything a client could wish for. The importance of offering the customer a choice of product as well as practical help such as organising deliveries, as and when they are needed, cannot be over-emphasised. Rinnai renewables range boosts performance

Heating & Plumbing 49

Rinnai’s solar water heating solutions are designed to offer a blend of ecofriendly technologies, guaranteed to provide a constant flow of hot water, no matter how many showers or taps are in use at the same time. Hot water produced by a HE Rinnai condensing continuous flow water heater can be utilised as a secondary heat source for a solar or ASHPboosted hot water delivery system. Providing an ultra-high efficiency renewables system and minimising fossil fuel usage, a key area for new and existing regulation such as ERP and Breeam. For allyear round hot water, Rinnai Infinity HDC1500 and HDC 1200 condensing continuous flow water heaters are renewables ready. They can be easily retro fitted to existing systems – future proofing current installs or supplied as ready to install turnkey packages featuring flat plate or evacuated tube collectors, the units can also act as a booster to preheated water from a heat pump or heat recovery system. For example, a Rinnai unit used as a solar gas booster maximises solar gain, as it only consumes energy when a boost in temperature is required, as the Infinity systems have

technologically advanced internal monitoring controls and a modulation range from 58kw – 2.4kw, the water heaters intelligently read the hot water temperature and only inject the precise amount of gas required to boost the water temperature – providing an unrivalled level of gas optimization. When the renewable source achieves temperature the unit is inactive. Fossil fuel is only used when the renewable thermal energy store is below its set-point, thus reducing the dependency on fossil fuel and reducing CO2 emissions. Rinnai UK’s Infinity PLUS renewables range includes solar store vessels and both flat plate and evacuated tube collectors, each with specific benefits to suit the individual application. Either option will provide years of low-maintenance, low-cost energy for heating water during the summer months – and beyond. Rinnai offers assistance with the design, specification and installation of a solar hot water/heating system which can save money on ever increasing fuel bills. Panasonic’s latest range of Aquarea systems are easy to install, saving time and cost and are capable of providing both heating and cooling as standard. ENQUIRY-Card 148

the units still offer optimum performance and an advanced, yet simple to use graphical interface controller. “We have listened to our customers and developed a slimline cylinder that still delivers all of the advanced facilities that Ecodan is renowned for,” explains

Charlton & Jenrick launch the Infinity 890BF

John Kellett, General Manager of the company’s Heating Systems Division. With heights of 1880mm and 1950mm, the cylinders have a 30-35 per cent smaller footprint and are fully compatible with Mitsubishi Electric’s wireless room controllers. Designed and manufactured in the UK, both the ECOSLIM-150L-PP-MEUK and the ECOSLIM-180L-PP-MEUK offer a hybrid function for use in tandem with conventional boilers. The hybrid capability enables premises with existing, high-carbon systems to benefit from Ecodan’s award-winning renewable heating performance. The pre-programmed SD card enables installers and heating engineers to preprogramme the heating system to offer fast on-site commissioning. Both the 150l and 180l Slimline models are single zone to ensure that they are competitively priced. An optional 2zone extension kit is also available should the customer require it. The cylinders use Mitsubishi Electric’s FTC4 controller, complete with an integrated immersion heater relay and intelligent controls which offer room compensation capabilities to regulate the flow temperature according to need. For further information on the full range of renewable heating solutions visit the dedicated website at or call 01707 282880. ENQUIRY-Card 577

Pegler Yorkshire Launches New Online Tool

Charlton & Jenrick are extremely proud to announce a further addition to the successful 890 range of Gas Fires the stunning 890BF. With the same bespoke, sophisticated design of the existing Infinity 890 range, the 890BF projects an outstanding, and extremely realistic flame picture, and one that will no doubt compliment and enhance any living space. With a modest gas input of 3.4 KW, and a very impressive efficiency of 92 %, the Infinity 890BF is a Gas Fire that is both beautiful to look at, and extremely economical to maintain. By achieving this performance without the need of a huge input gas rate, the Infinity 890BFhas superior décor compatibility, which has been a challenge for built in balanced flue models over the years.

Pegler Yorkshire, a market-leading authority in the plumbing and heating industry, has launched a new online selector tool to provide installers and contractors with a unique way to identify the most effective method to join pipe work in any given situation. INSIGHT is the perfect online tool to help installers, contractors and specifiers choose the right system for the job. Through three simple stages of search and selection (confirming the type of project, application and pipe work system), INSIGHT will help installers to identify and select the most appropriate way of joining pipe work for a specific project. Jointing products can be flexible to meet varying requirements but dependent upon the project, application and needs, some will perform far better than others and be quicker and easier to install.
