Crown Decorating Centres celebrate Kick Out The Can success

. View our publication online at . November 2014 .

Staff at seven Crown Decorating Centres are celebrating their suc-cess after helping customers recycle thousands of litres of surplus paint. The Kick Out The Can scheme was launched earlier this year across the network of more than 130 Crown Decorating Centres in the UK and Northern Ireland. The initiative encouraged people to return their left over paint to their local centre in return for a voucher to spend in store. The paint was then re-processed at Crown Paints headquarters in Darwen by social enterprise Nimtech, a not-for-profit organisation which provides work experience and training for people who might otherwise struggle to find employment. Recycled paint has now been distributed to community projects

such as communal gardens, education schemes and social housing across the country in partnership with regeneration charity, Groundwork. Each store returning the most paint for recycling in the seven Crown Decorating Centre regions was named a Kick Out The Can champion. Teams at Crown Decorating Centres in Burton-onTrent, Carlisle, Huddersfield, Maidstone, Oxford, Southport and Swindon all received a special certificate in recognition of their efforts.Paula Taylor, marketing manager for Crown Decorating Centres, said: “I’m delighted for the teams that have been named regional Kick Out The Can champions – it is a reflection of their hard work and dedication to helping us reduce waste and promote recycling.

“Kick Out The Can has been a definite success thanks to the hard work of all our staff across the Crown Decorating Centre network.” To have details of your nearest Crown Decorating Centre sent straight to your mobile, text ‘CROWN’ to 83332. JOSB Done: Promoting OSB JOSB Done is an industry-wide campaign that was launched in 2005 to promote the use of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) as a versatile and tough composite wood panel for all manner of building projects – from flooring and roofing to secure hoarding and boarding applications.

About to enter its 10th year, Alastair Kerr, director general of the Wood Panel Industries Federation and spokesperson for the campaign, gives an overview of the JOSB Done campaign this year and offers his viewpoints of the timber market going into 2015. “From the beginning of the JOSB Done campaign, supported by leading wood panel manufacturers, Norbord and SmartPly, resin supplier Huntsman and the Wood Panel Industry Federation, we have set out to prove that OSB is a viable alternative to plywood and the feedback we have received from builders over the years proves that attitudes within the building industry are changing. “During the nine years of the JOSB Done campaign, the OSB market has grown significantly and recent reports indicate that this is set to continue. With this focus in mind, the JOSB Done

campaign has undertaken a variety of activities designed to engage further with builders, designers and architects.” Material Lab “This year saw the JOSB Done campaign partner with established London-based design studio Material Lab in order to further engage with the design community. Throughout 2014, products manager Jim Biddulph has created various innovative structures and displays using OSB to demonstrate its versatility and the various ways it can be used in design. “As well as studio displays, Material Lab participated in the Clerkenwell Design Week and London Design Festival and used OSB panels to create individual workshop spaces. In addition, there was an exciting ‘live build’ event which took place to showcase designers working with OSB in front of the public. The event produced some fantastic results and also highlighted the uses of OSB as both an ideal worktop material and as a component to construct studio space.” Video guides “We’re always keen to stress to builders the advantages OSB as an engineered wood panel can offer, both in terms of its structure and strength and well as outlining some of the benefits it has when compared with plywood. To really demonstrate the construction capabilities of OSB, this year the JOSB Done campaign partnered with wellknown building expert Roger Bisby to create a series of practical videos to show the various uses of OSB in common building jobs and to dispel any

misconceptions that OSB doesn’t measure up to ply. “The first video saw Roger visit a factory in Inverness and follow the manufacturing process of OSB. Exclusive footage filmed on site showed the source of the wood, from FSC accredited forests, through to the crossply technique that gives each panel its inherent strength and durability. “Video two focuses on builder’s views of OSB using a vox-pop style interview with tradesmen and explaining why they choose to use OSB. Further videos will include general hints and tips and various applications from house building to design.” Apprentice of the Year “Earlier this year we also caught up with the two winners of the JOSB Done Apprentice of the Year competitions held in 2012 and 2013, during which the winners pitted their woodworking skills against other finalists in a practical competition. Each entrant was nominated by their employers and tasked with building a piece of furniture out of OSB in just 90 minutes which was judged by industry experts. “Since scooping first place in 2012, winner Greg Law completed his National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in carpentry and has since taken up a full-time position at Complete Property Maintenance, developing the skills needed to build a successful career in carpentry. The 2013 winner Harry Halligan has also been busy completing the final year of his NVQ and has received ongoing training and mentoring from experienced craftsmen

through his employment at Pennyfarthing Homes. “It was great to catch up with Greg and Harry and hear how they have progressed since winning the JOSB Done competition and we wish them every success in the future. We hope that other young builders and craftsmen will take the opportunity to find out about OSB and see how it can benefit their projects”. The year ahead “Recent research has shown that the global consumption of OSB is set to increase by 6% per year over the next three years until 2017 and the research also indicates that this is set to continue. “As builders and merchants alike continue to opt for environmentally sound timber products, OSB is ideally placed to satisfy demand. 2015 is set to be a significant milestone as the JOSB Done campaign celebrates its 10th anniversary and we are looking forward to leading the way in the UK timber panel market.” For further information on OSB and the JOSB Done campaign visit or visit the Twitter page @JosbDoneUK. The JOSB Done campaign has teamed up with established builder Roger Bisby to create a series or practical videos. The first video can be viewed at user/josbdoneuk. ENQUIRY-Card 503

Norbord panels for Passivhaus winner

Norbord's SterlingOSB wall sheathing and Caberfloor flooring have been used in the construction of an award-winning, low-energy farmhouse in Ayrshire, Scotland. Designed by Scottish architect, Kirsty Maguire, the new house is designed and built to Passivhaus standard, the German low-energy standard that minimises heating requirements while providing a comfortable, well-ventilated living space. Just like many ‘normal' timber framed properties, the new house uses Norbord's SterlingOSB as inner and outer sheathing for the highly-insulated wall panels while the suspended timber floors are decked with Norbord's Caberfloor tongue-andgroove particleboard panels. The house, built by local contractor, Hope Homes for a private client, is the first Passivhaus building ever erected in Ayrshire. Designed to mimic the appearance of the familiar corrugated iron hayshed found in this part of the country. ENQUIRY-Card 101

Don’t write to Santa

Builders should not include fuel cost savings when writing out their Christmas lists, according to The Fuelcard People. Steve Clarke, head of marketing for The Fuel Card Group, said, “Santa and the elves are far too busy working on making dreams come true for the world’s children. Builders really should not be asking Father Christmas for something that they could get for themselves with a single telephone call.” He added that, more importantly, nobody needs to wait until December 25th for cost savings. “Any commercial road user should be looking for a regular reduction in fuel costs of up to 4p per litre that starts immediately, not on Boxing Day,” he said. “If they call us now, we can compare the whole market in seconds to find the best fit for their particular needs. Within days, they could be carrying the right fuel cards and refuelling at lower prices nationwide.” ENQUIRY-Card 102

Kidde customer Place Group UK is one of the first private landlords to be awarded the respected DASH Landlord Accreditation in Lincoln. All Place Group properties are protected by hard-wired Kidde smoke, heat and CO alarms with back-up power.

SAFE AS HOUSES WITH KIDDE The aim of DASH accreditation is to encourage and promote good property standards and management practices in the private rental sector and the City of Lincoln Council now endorses and promotes the scheme. The DASH Property Standard, which accredited landlords must adhere to, refers to the ‘Housing Health and Safety Rating System’ (HHSRS). This identifies both fire and carbon monoxide poisoning as primary risks and stresses the importance of fitting appropriate alarms – top of Place Group’s list of priorities. Already a multi award-winning supplier of high quality HMO accommodation to students for over 20 years in North London, Place Group opened their Lincoln office in April 2014. They quickly discovered that most demand for their high quality HMO accommodation in Lincoln stemmed from graduates starting their first jobs, rather than students. To meet this demand, the company has invested in refurbishing period

houses in the popular West End and Uphill parts of the City centre. These offer a range of safe, secure studiostyle bedrooms, many with their own showers and kitchens, together with communal kitchens and laundry rooms. In all the Lincoln properties, Kidde’s Firex range has been installed and every studio bedroom now has its own smoke and heat alarm. All kitchens and food preparation areas also have heat alarms, linked to those in each bedroom. In addition, Firex smoke alarms protect escape routes and boiler rooms and Kidde’s hard-wired CO alarms are installed on each floor. Place Group CEO Rob Hunter commented: “We chose Kidde because there is no second chance to get it right with refurbishment. We wanted to avoid any costly mistakes that could occur if we specified a less established brand and had to make changes later. Moreover, we know that Kidde will support us in future.” Rob Hunter has been accredited by

the London Landlord Accreditation Scheme (LLAS) and the Midland Landlord Accreditation Scheme (MLAS), both part of the UK Landlord Accreditation Partnership (UKLAP), and was again voted ‘UKLAP Landlord of the Year for Student Housing’ in 2014, an award now held for three years. Rob was the first private landlord in London to be awarded Mayor Boris Johnson’s ‘London Rental Standard’ badge of accreditation in May 2014. Place Group’s properties are also accredited by Unipol under the AFS/Unipol Code. Place Group are working in Lincoln with DASH and property management agents Mustard & Co to supply safe secure housing, responsibly delivered. Crown Decorating Centre manager’s emotional journey to commemorative poppies display

Four representatives from Crown Decorating Centres have paid their respects to the fallen of the First World War at the Tower of London. The group travelled to the capital to see the iconic Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation which commemorates the centenary of the conflict. The poignant artwork features 888,246 ceramic poppies – one for each British military fatality in the Great War. Kevin Thomson, manager of the Crown Decorating Centre in Pride Park, travelled to London to view the installation in the run-up to Remembrance Day after sourcing paint for the artist behind the project, Paul Cummins. Kevin said: “We undertook some research to provide the best paint for the job as Paul was originally struggling to achieve the exact finish needed for the poppies. “As a team we are incredibly proud to have been involved with the installation and to have made a contribution to this incredible artwork which commemorates those who died in a terrible conflict. “The poppies are beautiful,

but when you stand at the Tower of London and consider what each bloom actually stands for, it is very humbling and emotional.” Paul Cummins’ sea of scarlet at the Tower of London Moat was an iconic part of televised coverage of events to mark the 100 year anniversary of the start of the First World War, with some of the poppies put into position at the site by Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and His Royal Highness Prince Harry. Naiem Wafa, General Manager for Crown Decorating Centres, joined Kevin on the trip to London along with regional managers Graham Pither and Paul Wood. Naiem said: “We’re honoured to have made this trip and to pay our respects to all those who died in the First World War, including those whose names are still listed at our headquarters in Darwen.” Paul Wood, Crown Decorating

Centres’ regional manager for the Midlands, said: “This is a project of major national and international significance and one we are delighted to have been able to assist with. “It is an emotional and historic experience to see the poppies here and I’m very proud we have made a contribution to the project.” Graham Pither, Crown Decorating Centres’ regional manager for the South East added: “I think you have to see the installation to fully understand it, but once you’re standing there and looking at this sea of red and contemplating what it represents – it’s breathtaking.” ENQUIRY-Card 512

Heat can escape from buildings through windows, doors and other wall break through points, wasting energy and reducing efficiency. Thermofoam is a new, highly flexible PU expanding foam from Everbuild, specially formulated to absorb movement, giving an air tight seal to reduce heat loss and in turn improving energy efficiency in buildings. With global warming being one of today’s biggest concerns, all new buildings must be tested for air permeability ensuring the air tightness of the structure is up to standard. Any heated air lost though gaps and cracks must be replaced requiring additional energy, reducing efficiency and increasing carbon emissions which have been closely linked to global warming. Thermofoam has been tested to the latest standard and is not only air permeability tested to EN12114:200-03 but also acoustic rated to EN ISO 717-1 up to 64Db, temperature resistant (-40 to 80°C) and finally fire rated to ISO 13501 Class E. Going green in the valley When Carla McHugh, owner of Glyngynnd Cottages near the picturesque little Welsh town of Llandiloe in Powys, needed a boost to her hot water provision she called on Rinnai. Carla needed to have her holiday cottages ready for the influx of visitors expected over Easter and into the summer and autumn but she had one big problem – an antiquated hot water system that did not produce enough hot water for all her guests. After being told about Rinnai by the service engineer, who also told her current system was unfixable Carla needed to have her holiday cottages ready for the influx of visitors expected over Easter and into the summer and autumn but she had one big problem – an antiquated hot water system that did not produce enough hot water for all her guests. After being told about Rinnai by the service engineer, who also told her current system was unfixable (and should have been retired six or seven years ago) Carla contacted Rinnai via ‘help me choose’ on the Rinnai website, asking: “We have five holiday cottages with water heaters between them which

New features include the latest Hitachi heat pump models and the addition of performance indications and operating costs;

need replacing. Which of your continuous flow water heaters would you recommend? Could we put in one water heater to service them all?” The query sent Rinnai area representative Martin Embley to investigate. “I found two water heaters supplying four cottages which were running out of water when demand was high. Carla wanted a system that would stop this happening but she was also tight for space.” Glynnydd Cottages comprises five selfcontained holiday-let cottages which can be rented separately or as a group sleeping up to 20 people. Nestling on the easterly slopes of an unspoilt valley, Glyngynwydd Cottages stands in 12 acres of land which includes woodland, a wildlife pond, meadow, relaxing gardens and a own stream and dingle for guests to enjoy. “As one might expect in a setting like this, the site is offgrid so an energy efficient LPG boiler was needed,” says Martin, who suggested installing four Rinnai Infinity 17e externally mounted flueless water heaters direct to outlet and supplying each cottage with a luxury hot water supply to service the cottages individually – never running out of water. The water heater is capable of flow rates of up to 510 litres per hour at a 50°C rise. the domestic hot water (DHW) selection and calculation is also now available, its tariff is updateable and daily hot water usage can be defined to configure water tank volume and estimate energy consumption in kW/h and litres. Heating and DHW performances - including annual energy and input in kWh, COP and annual cost – are shown for each unit. Bar graphs are provided as a summary and enable users to make comparisons with other heating systems that emphasise heat pump benefits. Accessories such as room thermostats, temperature sensors or kits can also be integrated into the project, with accessories displayed dependent on the heat pump type selected. These items are then integrated into the final report and costing. The new software is compatible with all current operating systems (Mac OS, Windows and Linux) via most hardware platforms (PC, smartphone and tablet).

The Rinnai Infinity 17e is designed for use directly off the mains, with no need for large, ungainly storage vessels. Weighing just 18kg and measuring 675mmH x 370mmW x 103mmD the Infinity 17e has been developed to allow maximum flexibility as it can be easily mounted on an external wall thereby eliminating the need for flueing and freeing up valuable interior space. This feature gives greater flexibility at the design stage and can offer an alternative solution where flue runs are problematic or internal space is not available. ENQUIRY-Card 514

Inta raises the temperature in product development

International expansion vessel manufacturer Zilmet continues to take the lead in innovation, with the launch of its newly-developed, patented ZILAN membranes. After years of research and development, the manufacturer has unveiled its ultimate ‘second skin’ - a unique membrane that promises to increase the already impressive longevity of its products, with reduced permeability and specialised sizing. The ZILAN membranes now feature across the entire Zilmet vessel offering, further cementing the manufacturer’s position as the go-to for quality, longlasting solutions. Unlike many others in the industry, Zilmet’s membranes veer away from the ‘one size fits all’ approach and are tailored to meet various sizes, further increasing the vessel performance.

Launched in 2002, manufacturer of heating, plumbing and showering products, Inta, has been breaking boundaries and inspiring industry-wide innovation for over a decade. As the firm celebrates three years since the launch of its acclaimed plumbing and heating division, Inta looks back over the success stories that have seen its products and ranges admired and emulated by many of its industry contemporaries. The firm, which has proudly created no less than three patented products, led the way back in 2012 when it unveiled a range of heating products that promised to deliver on more elements than any of its counterparts. A case in point, Inta’s extensive range of WRAS-approved pressure reducing valves (PRVs), which are available in sizes up to 54mm and operate up a temperature of 80 degrees celsius, were unveiled to the market when other PRVs had a maximum temperature of 60 degrees. 108 ENQUIRY-Card 108 ENQUIRY-Card 109

Grant UK launches latest Evosta pump primes installers for 2015 ThermaWave range A new way to combine traditional and renewable heating systems. Combining renewable technologies with traditional heating systems in one thermal store is now even easier than ever thanks to the launch of the new Grant ThermaWave, which allows multiple heat sources to be connected, all with a 3kW immersion heater backup. The Grant ThermaWave is available in three variations: open-vented with solar coil, open-vented with solar and Domestic Hot Water (DHW) coils and sealed system with solar and DHW coils. ThermaWave DHW stores are extremely installer friendly as they have been designed for situations where there is a greater demand for domestic hot water, yet there is no need to link the store to an additional cylinder, resulting in a more cost effective and compact installation.

The new range of high efficiency Evosta circulators from DAB Pumps provides energy savings and meets the European 2013 and 2015 legislation enforcing a reduction in energy consumption. Designed for circulating hot water in domestic heating systems, the Evosta delivers high efficiency performance while minimizing energy consumption. Using state of the art technology, the pump reacts to system changes automatically and adapts the circulator performance accordingly. Evosta meets the 2013 and 2015 Energy Related Products (ErP) requirements (Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) ≤ 0.23) in line with European Directive 2009/125/EC. Due to the fact that the Evosta is dimensionally the same as a traditional type pump it will replace, it is ideal for retrofit situations, where old three-speed circulators need to be replaced with Head of 4, 5 and 6 meters. Mitsubishi Electric reshapes air source heat pump market Mitsubishi Electric has launched the next generation of its marketleading Ecodan air source heat pump range with a host of new initiatives that increases heat up efficiency by 17 per cent, makes remote monitoring easier to access, thereby aiding applications to Government initiatives, and also introduces a whole new way of heating a cylinder. The developments include the UK’s first use of a plate heat exchanger in a domestic cylinder and patented ScaleStop technology to remove the risk of limescale build-up. The launch comes as the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) moves from its legacy stage into supporting new market growth, with the company developing the

advanced range to answer the growing need for renewable heating in the UK. “This is our fifth generation of heat pump solutions and we have looked at just about every aspect so that we can maximise efficiency and ease both installation and operation”, explains Max

Halliwell, Product Marketing Manager for the domestic Ecodan range. “We are proud to have been first to market with several initiatives in heat pumps and this new generation continues that trend by putting Ecodan streets ahead of any other system”. Ecodan was the first inverter-

driven air source heat pump in the UK to receive MCS (Micro Certification Scheme) certification and the first UKmanufactured unit to receive the prestigious Eco Label. It is also the only air source heat pump that have received the Noise Abatement Society’s

‘Quiet Mark’ and the first to offer intelligent room sensing as standard. Mitsubishi Electric has invested heavily in R&D facilities at its UK manufacturing plant in Livingston to focus on the experience of the homeowner, simplifying the installation for the contractor, and making maintenance and monitoring even easier: Mitsubishi Electric reshapes air source heat pump market / Page. “We have set out to develop an incredibly sophisticated machine with a simple front end”, adds Halliwell. The next generation – the FTC5 range, which is available from January 2015, includes a complete new range of new cylinders which focus on improvements in heat loss performance; hot water recovery efficiency and time; and ease of installation and use. All ten of the new cylinders dispense with the traditional internal coil method of water heating and instead use an external plate heat exchanger which increases hot water heat up efficiency by 17 per cent over previous models. Hydronik systems warm Palmerston Fort The famous Palmerston Forts arranged along the South Coast of England were built to be solid enough to resist invasion by Napoleonic forces, but the resulting thermal mass and exposed locations make them very hard to heat. It is, however, a challenge that has been effectively met using a selection of products from Timóleon’s Hydronik range linked to a hybrid renewable energy source. Fort Albert on the Isle of Wight was completed in 1856 to defend the Needles Passage, which gives access to Portsmouth with its strategically important naval dockyard. Still in use during World War II, it remained in military ownership until the 1950s, when it was sold and converted for domestic use. It still offered little comfort for its occupants until the current owners began a comprehensive refurbishment and improvement project in 2013 employing locally based Round the Island Builders Limited and WJ Wetherick Plumbing & Heating to install the Timóleon

Grant UK launches new wood pellet store A biomass boiler is a great alternative to fossil fuel when it comes to reducing annual fuel bills. Now Grant UK has made it even easier to store the fuel used by its Spira condensing biomass boilers and reduce fuel costs even further by introducing the Grant Wood Pellet Store. While wood pellets can be bought in bags (typically around 10 to 15kg), if space is available, a bulk store can be installed which can directly feed (by auger or vacuum system) the intermediate Grant pellet hopper supplied as standard with the boiler. This allows homeowners to buy pellets in bulk, which is more cost effective. The Grant Wood Pellet Store range is designed and manufactured in house and available in sizes from 500kg to 6 tonnes and in three footprints – 1m x 1m, 1m x 2m and 2m x 2m. ENQUIRY-Card 116

Rinnai offers a ‘BMS Gateway’ to hot water efficiency - another innovation Rinnai is introducing yet another product innovation in its continuous drive for the highest possible efficiencies and control over hot water provision in all commercial sites. This pioneering product allows end-users to exercise ultimate control and maximise energy efficiencies in all sizes and types of buildings, even in multitenanted sites.

Utilising the BACnet and modbus compatible protocol, Rinnai has introduced a gateway that allows a seamless integration of its continuous flow hot water heating products and systems into Building Management Systems (BMS). The Rinnai Gateway enables access to its advanced product functionality including temperature control, fault

diagnostics and communication, energy monitoring, trend logging and on/off status. “We have recognised the growing market demand for a reliable and efficient supply of hot water. The Rinnai gateway will provide end-users and FM managers alike with the facility to manage and maintain their hot water supply more efficiently than ever before “says Managing Director Tony Gittings. The Rinnai smart controller offers on/off status as well as fault codes to facilitate first hit repair. For example, the BMS can communicate a precise error code to the central system meaning that in the event of a breakdown the user can communicate the correct parts and information to the engineer for a first time fix, limiting down time and improving Rinnai service response. The controller allows the end user to remotely monitor and

change system temperatures and also to monitor and adjust burners for maximum efficiencies. In effect, the controls monitor gas usage to dictate business periods and energy savings. Rinnai units modulate the gas supply in relation to the amount of heat input required to optimise gas

usage meaning high energy efficiency is delivered at all times. This is monitored and visualised by the controls. For more details on RINNAI products visit ENQUIRY-Card 519

Polypipe introduces the UK’s first flexible waterless trap Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of above and below ground drainage, plastic plumbing and underfloor heating systems, has launched a flexible self-sealing waste valve. New to market, the innovative range can be used across a whole manner of waste appliances from basins to baths, showers, urinals and sinks, and features a distinctive flexible corrugated pipe body for added adaptability in confined spaces. Available in 32mm and 40mm diameters, the flexible valves have been launched to offer installers and end users more choice in situations where traditional water-based traps may not be the most effective. Unlike water-based traps which can be compromised by evaporation after long periods of inactivity, this new range does not run the risk of foul odours entering the building in low or no flow situations. Furthermore, the

flexible pipe structure and simple ‘pipe to pipe’ connection means it can be fitted either vertically or horizontally at an angle and still perform. In the coming weeks Polypipe will be showcasing the practical problem-solving benefits of the new range to installers working on residential, healthcare and education projects. Mark Devanney, Product Manager at Polypipe, said: “We’ve introduced the new, self-sealing flexible valve as a direct result of customer demand for a problemsolving above ground waste drainage solution. With its flexible pipe profile, the product is versatile enough to be installed in a number of configurations across multiple building types, giving installers and their customers added confidence that works can be completed swiftly and with ease.” Polypipe’s flexible self-sealing waste valve works by opening under pressure from running

water from an appliance and closes to re-form the airtight seal once the water stops running. It is available with a range of connectors to allow the product to be used with ABS pipework. Example applications ideally suited to the flexible valve include small bathrooms where it would otherwise be necessary to chisel out the floor to fit the trap, where a slim line basin is being used, under shower trays, and where there is a need to free up space under kitchen sinks to maximise storage potential. To celebrate the launch, Polypipe is holding a prize draw, giving installers the chance to win a spa break for two in Bath, with second and third prizes of a 16gb Apple iPad and five chances to win a 2gb Apple iPod Shuffle. Franke Midas single bowl sink is good for small spaces The Midas MTX 610-55 inset stainless steel sink, from Franke, part of the ProValue collection, helps make the most of the sink area when worktop space is at a premium.

On average we Britons have the smallest bathrooms in Europe and with more first-time “starter” homes and flats being built with tight bathroom space, this trend will only continue. That’s why, when designing bathrooms, saving space and creating an illusion of spaciousness is key to architects and installers. The Multikwik range of sanitary frames and slimline cisterns assist the design of small bathrooms in two ways. Firstly, they can shave vital centimetres off the space required for plumbing. Secondly, by using wall hung sanitaryware, it will give an uncluttered, clean look that can provide an airy feel to even the tightest bathroom or cloakroom.

Rustic Travertine, one of the most recent additions to Showerwall’s waterproof laminate wall panelling system, reflects the latest trend for stones and granites in neutral colours in bathroom interiors without the price-tag, providing an easyinstallation, easy maintenance alternative to tiles. Rustic Travertine mirrors the look of real stone but as a laminate panel is lightweight to handle, easy to cut and install. It is also vastly cheaper than real stone. Rustic Travertine is one of six new design additions, extending the Showerwall range to 39 laminate designs in total. They respond to popular customer demand for easy-living neutrals with Rustic Travertine Gloss, Natural Marble Gloss, and Bianco Stardust. ENQUIRY-Card 125 ENQUIRY-Card 126 ENQUIRY-Card 127

Population trends are triggering an increase in the specification and purchase of disabled equipment. As a result, specifiers are having to adapt to developments in the sector- an adaptation simplified with advances at Clos-o-Mat. Britain’s biggest manufacturer of toileting solutions for the less able, the company has extended its range to deliver a flexible offering that efficiently creates a wellfunctioning accessible bathroom, toilet, washroom, or Changing Places facility in domestic and commercial environments. “The Office for National Statistics’ latest data shows life expectancy in the UK has reached its highest level on record, with the number of centenarians alone increasing five-fold in 20 years. Disability is also on the increase: up by 1/2million in less than a decade, with manual dexterity and continence particularly both showing an increase in prevalence. Today, one child in 20 under the age of 16 is disabled, and children with special and complex needs in mainstream schools has increased to almost 20%,” says Robin Tuffley, Clos-oMat marketing manager. Shetland Projects completed by NorDan

The new extension to Happyhansel Primary School in Shetland has pre-finished timber windows and doors from NorDan, the Norwegian external joinery experts. The building was designed by architects Redman Sutherland, and commissioned by Shetland Islands Council. The extension provides offices for the secretary and the Head

Teacher, a library and teaching space for a visiting tutor. These spaces are built around a new covered entrance lobby with a glazed roof which lets light into the existing canteen and a new cloakroom area, with covered waiting area for parents. Painted timber weatherboarding was used to express these spaces and to bring colour into the scheme.

Drystane dykes contain the play spaces and garden areas which were re-landscaped. NorDan supplied aluminium clad timber windows from the NTech range and inward opening glazed door sets. “We have completed many projects for clients in Shetland, where the weather can be as severe as that in Norway where our windows are designed and

manufactured,” says Gordon Mitchell, regional director in NorDan’s Aberdeen office. “Our high performance aluminium clad timber windows are designed to fully seal the building and provide resistance to high storm force winds (tested up to hurricane forces) and driving rain.” NorDan also recently supplied the windows, glazed entrance doors and fixed light screens to a new extension to Shetland College- part of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). The £4.6m project was funded by Shetlands Islands Council, the ERDF, the Scottish Funding Council and Shetland College UHI. It provides new facilities for staff and students with classrooms, video conference suites, internet café, library, art studios, an extended construction workshop and a new hospitality suite. The contractors were Hunter & Morrison, architects were Covell Matthews. NorDan’s outward and inward opening doorsets

were specified along with fully reversible timber windows and fixed lights. NorDan UK Ltd was founded in 1926 in Moi Norway by the Rasmussen family. The third generation of the family runs the company today which employs over 1300 people across 8 factories in Europe and 6 regional project offices in the UK. Last reported results from the firm were £160m group turnover. ENQUIRY-Card 530

P C Henderson introduces stylish & practical new Twinbolt locking system P C Henderson, leading international manufacturer of door hardware systems, is pleased to introduce the innovative new Twinbolt system to its customers. This now enables the door to be locked internally at the top and bottom of the door by turning one handle 90 degrees, removing the need to manually engage two flush bolts. With over 90 years’ experience in the manufacture of door hardware systems, P C Henderson identified the demand in the residential architectural market for the Twinbolt, offering two points of discreet security with throw rods top and bottom. Designed for easy installation, this system unlike many others on the market requires minimal routing and additional adjustment to the supplied components, the Twinbolt offers many benefits to the joiner and the customer. The new concealed locking system can be specified alongside Securefold accommodating a timber door weight of 100kg for exterior applications. A sleek handle provides a modern and stylish finish. Routing detail cover strips can also be specified in three colour options of black, white and brown to match the

door finish. Andrew Royle, UK Commercial Director at P C Henderson comments: “The new Twinbolt locking system offers an alternative to customers who do not want to have to manually engage two flush bolts when locking the swing door. Without compromising on security, the throw rods are engaged simultaneously by turning the satin finish handle 90 degrees which then locks the door into position.” For added security and convenience Twinbolt incorporates the Yale

Securiturn™ Removable Thumbturn. This provides the flexibility of a keyed cylinder lock when required whilst allowing the use of a thumbturn for everyday convenience which can easily be removed when required by using the specialist tool provided within the kit. Howarth celebrates BSI kitemark

Always seeking to ensure steel windows meet or exceed the latest building regulations, the Steel Window Association has undertaken extensive thermal performance simulations of the W30 and W40 window ranges. The results prove without doubt that both window types are fully compliant and achieve 2013 Part L requirements. The C-rated window incorporates an 18mm double glazed unit comprising a 4mm soft coat low-e glass and 4mm clear float, sandwiching a 10mm krypton gas-filled cavity with a warm edge spacer bar.

A Window on Security Windows can be a very vulnerable part of a building, often seen as “soft targets” by terrorists and criminals, impacting on people’s safety and the protection of property.

The UK has a vast array of prominent and iconic buildings, particularly in city centres; with a multitude of uses including hotels, government, museums, offices, universities, clubs and, of course, residential, attracting people in large numbers to live, work, study and socialise in these vibrant centres. Electronic security will warn but not resist so physical security measures are an important part of any plan for protection. Glass, particularly in period buildings, offers little resistance to attack. It will readily shatter by a bomb exploding more than 100M away and flying shards will maim and kill. It is also easily broken by an intruder prepared to use force. A solution is found with Selectaglaze’s secure secondary glazing systems. A fully separate window is fitted behind an existing window using robust frames, secure locks and strengthened glass. These can be hinged, sliding or fixed and are subjected to rigorous testing before certification. The windows are live blast tested against standard ISO 16933 and physically attacked with a wide range of tools, using the wellrespected Loss Prevention

standard LPS 1175. The frames are designed to fit discretely and sympathetically in contemporary or period buildings. Listed building consents are usually granted. Added benefits include significant levels of sound insulation, which is highly desirable in noisy locations and enhanced thermal insulation that will improve a buildings energy performance and reduced ingress of dust and dirt. Established in 1966 and a Royal Warrant Holder since 2004, Selectaglaze is the UK’s leading designer and producer of secondary glazing and has worked in a significant number of the country’s leading buildings. Homeowners advised not to get caught out by British winter weather when fitting new doors With winter on the horizon bi-fold door manufacturer and supplier, Vufold, is urging anyone thinking about installation and building works in 2015 not to be caught out by the changeable British weather. The warning comes on the back of the company witnessing a dramatic increase in demand for

its external doors as soon as the weather picked up at the back end of last winter. Vufold supplies a wide range of external bi-fold doors to customers from the English south coast to the Scottish borders from its warehouse and offices in Cheshire, and is keen to advise home owners that late orders could mean significant

delays to their plans. Marketing Manager for Vufold, Kerry Murphy-Kaytan explains the knock on effects the company witnessed earlier this year. “Last winter gave us some late cold and wet weather which we think made people hold off from placing orders. When the weather picked up in late March/April we had an unprecedented high demand of orders. Fortunately, we keep our warehouse well-stocked with ready to deliver door sets so it did not cause our customers any problems, however, if homeowners suddenly shorten the deadlines to which they plan to work it

can impact on suppliers as well as builders. We know builders that simply could not cope with the demand from customers wanting installations done before the summer as everyone had the same idea and rushed to get their plans completed. If spring plans are set back customers could be looking at having doors fitted in the summer holidays when they were hoping to be away on vacation. Our advice to anyone looking at projects for next year is to talk to builders and suppliers in plenty of time about supply times and availability. Having a contingency plan in place if the weather changes can mean the

difference between getting the project finished on time or it dragging on throughout the year.” One of the biggest problems homeowners face is the issue of ordering bespoke door sets. Lead times for these can be much longer than for readymade universal sized doors, not only that, but once they are manufactured the supplier will expect to deliver them. If the supplier does not have the space to store a customer’s doors this can cause even more problems, as most respected manufacturers advise against on-site storage. “From a storing point of view, householders should look for a supplier that can offer shortterm or emergency storage options just in case they have to make changes in the installation plans. The other option is to ask about delayed despatch times and whether they are flexible enough to take account of disruptions to installations. Not all suppliers do, and homeowners are well advised to see these as added benefits rather than an expected service. ” says Kerry Murphy-Kaytan. ENQUIRY-Card 539

Solarlux launches new sliding door system in the UK Listers Projects Deliver Growth. “Listers Projects”, the commercial installation arm of Lister Trade Frames in Stoke on Trent, have recently completed a large contract in Droitwich for McCarthy & Stone Property Developments using Beaumont timber look windows and MetalTech curtain walling. McCarthy & Stone are best known as the largest developer of privately owned retirement property in the UK. Over the past 30 years they have built over 45,000 apartments nationwide and regularly win awards for their work. Glazing works carried out by Listers on the Droitwich project included over 250 Beaumont PVCu windows in white grained profiles. The Beaumont window system was designed by Dempsey Dyer Ltd to bridge the gap between PVCu and high-end timber windows providing authentic joint and corner details.

Solarlux has launched an innovative, all-glass sliding door system in the UK – the SL 22, – after exhibiting a prototype in March at Fensterbau Frontale, the world’s leading exhibition for windows, doors and facades.. The SL 22 received high praise from architects attending the exhibition, which is why Solarlux has

decided to introduce the product to the UK market. Thanks to slanted glass technology, the SL 22 ‘invisible’ sliding door system can be used almost anywhere, either as the ultimate shelter against the great British weather in a glass house and allowing the outside in, or as a highly transparent room divider.

Get ahead of the winter weather

WITH STORMDRY With dry walls having better insulating qualities than wet ones, it’s time to apply Safeguard Europe’s market-leading masonry protection cream Stormdry before the winter weather sets in.

This will result in not only energy savings of up to 29%; but also an end to penetrating damp from driven rain. And while Stormdry is practically the only damp-proofing cream that can be applied to wet masonry, it achieves maximum penetration and protection

more quickly on dry ones – and on warmer days. Easily applied by either brush or roller, Stormdry cures colourlessly to the original finish of masonry in just 12 hours. A single coat will protect the substrate for up to 30 years. Stormdry is more deeply penetrating than traditional liquid applied water repellents – up to 12mm in flettons – meaning that its crack-bridging capability is greater; and its life expectancy increased. Even if the weather has started to deteriorate before application, Stormdry – uniquely – can even be applied to wet walls. These will continue to dry because it works by lining the pores of brickwork and other masonry rather than blocking them: enabling water vapour to escape while preventing further moisture ingress. Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream is also the only dampproofing cream that has been independently shown to not only prevent penetrating damp from rain; but also enhance the thermal efficiency of walls. This is quite simply because dry bricks have twice the thermal

resistance of wet. Safeguard has scientifically and independently proven this link so definitively that Stormdry is classified under VAT Notice 708/6 as an energy-saving measure that qualifies for a reduced VAT rate of 5%. According to tests conducted on solid wall constructions by the University of Portsmouth, the treatment will provide energy savings of up to 29%. Stormdry cream has significant advantages over insulation because it costs less to install, does not change the appearance of the building and can be applied quickly and simply with minimal disruption to the occupier. The masonry protection cream will also cut growths such as mould and moss and is also part of Safeguard Europe’s flood protection system. It can also be used to deal with the issues of damp that can arise with cavity wall insulation. Its vapour permeability enables the wall to dry out while preventing the entry of more water that may impact adversely on the insulation’s performance. ENQUIRY-Card 544

Ubiflex 80% lighter than lead, it’s also completely non-toxic, so health & safety is improved on two counts – and the light weight can bring structural advantages.

Ubiflex non-lead flashing makes a complex job simple. Crown Build of Maldon chose Ubbink’s Ubiflex non-lead flashing system for a variety of applications on the new roof at Priory Court, a private development in Hatfield Peverel, Essex. Manufactured from aluminium mesh reinforcement, coated with a mixture of modified bitumen and additives, Ubiflex is a malleable material which can be used in most applications where lead is traditionally used. It is available in grey, terracotta and black finishes, in 6m or

12m roll lengths. The project, for Hatfield Peverel based Top Floor Property Management, involved flashings around dormer windows, and other roof features including pitched roof valleys on the complex roof structure. Pauline Apthorp of Top Floor

Property Management, said: “The roof required different lead code levels from 3 to 5 on different areas. Ubiflex is the equivalent thickness of lead code 7/8, so could be used throughout, simplifying costing, specification and the the installation process itself.” Paul Benorthan of Crown Build

takes up the story: “This was the first time we’d used Ubiflex and we were very impressed. The first thing that struck us was how light and easy to handle it is compared to lead. Before we even started work, we were grateful for how quick and easy it was to get the rolls of Ubiflex up onto the roof. Once the project was under way, in one area, we were able to fit a continuous twelve metre run. This saved a huge amount of time and removed the need for expansion joints, making big material savings and reducing wastage. We ended up with only 600mm of excess Ubiflex over the whole project.” Not only is Ubiflex 80% lighter than lead, it’s also completely non-toxic, so health & safety is improved on two counts – and the light weight can bring structural advantages, too.

Another obvious benefit of Ubiflex is that unlike lead, it has no scrap value so is of no interest to thieves. It’s a sustainable, recyclable material and carries BBA certification. In wind tunnel testing at the BRE, Ubiflex has been demonstrated to resist uplift at wind speeds of up to 110 miles per hour when installed with High Tack, so it can be specified with confidence for virtually any application even in coastal areas. For further information about Ubiflex, call Ubbink on 01604 433000 or visit ENQUIRY-Card 549

Cembrit chosen for new offices in Burton

John Cunningham, Managing Director of Metrotile UK

After launching its new textured Westerland fibre cement roofing products in February, Cembrit was chosen to supply 10,000 of these slates to a leading mechanical and electrical engineering company for its new headquarters in Staffordshire. Having outgrown its current head office in Burton on Trent, WT Parker Ltd began demolishing the buildings to make space for new headquarters and workshop facility. The transformation of the new space is part of the firm’s plan to grow the company and create a more energy efficient office building which includes solar panels. Midlands-based construction company, GF Tomlinson Ltd was the main contractor on the project and WT Parker and architect’s Lyall and Lyall had the task of specifying a slate which could be cut to accommodate solar panels.

A surge in sales for roofing of conservatories is behind more than 30% of projected annual growth at leading lightweight tile firm Metrotile UK. The Chippenham-based company has just sold its millionth tile in 2014 and is forecasting sales of 1.16 million tiles this year, turning over record figures of £7.1 million with net profits expected to reach £679,000. Driving the performance is major rise in the sale of tiles for conservatories, in addition to continued success in other sectors, including refurbishments for housing associations and local authorities. John Cunningham, Managing Director of Metrotile UK, said: “We have completed projects all over the UK on a huge variety of roofs, from private homes and renovations of housing stock to sports clubs, supermarkets and even a bird observatory. State-of-the-art materials help turn award-winning design into reality Glasgow’s The Gorbals is being taken into the 21st century as part of a major, award-winning1 regeneration, and is using technologically-advanced materials to deliver modern performance as well as design. At the heart of the regenerations is the creation of over 1000 new homes at Richmond Park, a development by housebuilder Bett Homes, which includes construction of six-storey blocks each with 17 x two-bedroom apartments. To achieve a contemporary look at Richmond Park, Bett Homes has chosen to use some 450m2 of Protan SE1.2mm single ply membrane on each of the blocks with ‘flat’ roofs. Hot-air welded at the joints and mechanically fixed in place by roofing contractor JMS, the Protan membrane is detailed with omega profiles to give the impression of a metal standing seam roof.

Alumasc Waterproofing & Green Roof success at new Glasgow development 185-221 Buchanan Street is a new £70m mixed development comprising 11,400m2 of retail space and 49 residential units. Owned by Land Securities, the development features a large rooftop garden which required a robust waterproofing solution.

the need for a suitable growing medium to be supplied that could be deposited onto the 5-storey building’s roof in large volumes. This was required as a result of the development being in a busy citycentre location. These issues were overcome and the intensive green roof garden was installed in an efficient

manner. In total, over 4,000m2 of Hydrotech and 2,000m2 of green roofing, was installed. Commenting on the project, Kath MacTaggart, landscape architect at BDP, said: “As with any roof garden project, the challenge is in the detailing of all

BDP Architects specified both Alumasc’s Hydrotech hot melt structural waterproofing system and green roof on the scheme due to the benefits offered by a single-source solution and, of course, the quality of the products. One challenge on the project related to the architect’s intricate roof detailing, which meant a close working relationship with Alumasc’s technical team was developed from the outset. As a hot-melt system, and due to its versatility, Hydrotech was ideally suited to accommodating this and was perfect for use under the green roof. Alumasc’s green roof system addressed

interfaces and logistics to ensure that a system is watertight. We used Hydrotech at Buchanan Street as it was part of the proprietary Alumasc green roofing system and therefore had the benefits of a fully guaranteed system. To date, we are very happy with the results.” Area Manager for Scotland at Alumasc Roofing, John Kelly, adds: “It was great to be involved with such a celebrated development in this major area of Glasgow. The Hydrotech system will ensure the integrity of the roof for many years to come, whilst the green roofing provides an attractive outdoor space for residents to enjoy.” Hydrotech is a BBA approved, fully warranted waterproofing system, designed to last the lifetime of the structure it is applied to. It has European Technical Approval and is FM Approved. Alumasc green roof systems, under the Blackdown brand, are available in Intensive, Biodiverse and Extensive application categories with a wide range of planting options. The Buchanan Street roof garden joins a long line of prestigious developments that have benefitted from the quality and expertise offered by Alumasc Roofing systems. This change now replaces many names previously used across Europe including Styropor, PSE, Piepschuim and Polyfoam bringing a common European name for the material. Explaining the move, David Emes, Chairman of the BPF EPS group said, “Airpop has been chosen because the name immediately brings to mind what the material is made of – air. In fact 98 % air, to be precise. With just a tiny fraction made of polystyrene expanded to fifty times its own volume. This remarkable material is used as a lightweight, highimpact, highly-efficient insulating material in construction and civil engineering as well as in products protecting everything that needs to be protected - our children’s heads, televisions, computers, fresh fish and thousands of other items used in our daily lives.” The airpop® campaign has been initiated by EUMEPS and their respective national EPS trade associations as well as by European EPS raw material producers. Yeoman Rainguard’s XL Aluminium rainwater systems The owners of the home, David Dunnett & Geoff Wainwright, originally saw Yeoman Rainguard rainwater systems at a London building exhibition. “We were impressed by what we saw on the Rainguard exhibition stand and we were certainly attracted to the XL Aluminium range because of its traditional appearance which was ideal for the style of house we were building.” Explained Mr Dunnett. XL Aluminium 75mm diameter downpipes along with 125 x

100mm MOG gutters, finished in a Black textured polyester powder coating, were installed on the property. The powder coating finish ensures that the pipes and guttering will offer years of maintenance free service and will not be susceptible to colour bleaching. Style was not the only criteria on the shopping list. An easy to install rainwater system was also a consideration on this new build project. The XL Aluminium gutters with the push fix joint technology, requiring no mechanical fixing,

are easy to fit helping to speed up the installation time. Choosing the XL Aluminium range will also get the thumbs up when considering the environment. 95% of the materials used to manufacture the gutters and downpipes are recyclable making it an ecologically sound choice for any building scheme. Yeoman Rainguard can offer free services to their customers such as samples, site surveys and take offs from architect drawings, helping clients to make an informed choice when

it comes to purchasing the right rainwater system for their particular needs. “We found the customer service offered by Yeoman Rainguard faultless and have been so pleased with the products and services that we are going to use them again on our next building project Broomhill Cottage.” Concluded Mr Dunnett. Lanes cross connection search solves pollution problem in hidden river Lanes Group drainage engineers have helped solve a pollution problem in one of the UK's most famous rivers where it was hidden from view under a shopping centre. They were called in to search for the source of raw sewage coming from a surface water drain after it was spotted by construction workers. The sewage was seen flowing from an outfall into the River Mersey, at the point that the river runs under the centre of Stockport, Greater Manchester, in a giant culvert. The pollution problem was only found because the construction workers were erecting scaffolding ready to carry out inspections and repairs on the culvert roof. Simon Roberts, area development manager for Lanes Group in Manchester, said: "The Mersey is hidden from view, you really wouldn't know that it is flowing beneath your feet as you stand in the centre of Stockport. Altro wall cladding used in groundbreaking clinical design Altro Whiterock ChameleonTM has been used along with Altro UnityTM 25 safety flooring to create a groundbreaking solution within the new Endoscopy Unit at Mount Vernon Hospital, in Northwood, Middlesex, where infection control and patient wellbeing are paramount considerations. The new £800,000 Endoscopy Unit has been created to offer the very latest technology within an attractive, relaxing environment. Importantly, the fourbedded ward has been designed to ensure a streamlined journey for patients from admission on to the unit, through to the procedure itself and discharge home. In the existing facility, patients were required to retire to a separate sitting room before being discharged.

Remmers Floormix DQ – The Ideal Solution The main production area of the Express Contract Drying factory in South Wales required refurbishment. The existing slabs created significant substrate challenges due to the mixture of old finishes and bare concrete. TPS360, the contractor for the project, was instructed to produce a new floor finish that needed to be slip resistant with good chemical resistance whilst providing an attractive and highly durable finish. Remmers Floormix DQ flooring system was chosen for its special blend of decorative colour quartz aggregate and extreme durability which was ideally suited for this application. Due to time constraints on the program, fast curing resin screeds were installed, to falls, to an exacting standard to avoid ponding. ENQUIRY-Card 153 ENQUIRY-Card 154

Resilient Winter Weather protection form Arco

Makita bring even higher spec with good vibrations for new 12kg avt hammer

Get To Grips With Hultafors’ Tools!

As winter approaches, outdoor workers are exposed to freezing temperatures, heavy rain and strong winds, bearing the brunt of the extreme changes in weather conditions while most people take shelter indoors. It is essential that these workers remain protected from the hazards of working outdoors when temperatures drop and wind speed increases to prevent cold stress. This is a significant risk factor if heat is allowed to leave the body quicker than it can be produced and can lead to serious health problems. Committed to keeping people safe and well this winter, Arco, the UK’s leading safety supplier, has further developed their winter weatherwear layering system, designed to keep workers warm, dry and comfortable in extreme weather conditions. In addition to last year’s successful launch of the Trojan® Base Layers, Arco has now developed interactive garments which allow an insulating ‘mid’ layer to be directly zipped into an outer layer.

• More joules, more impacts per minute, more rpm, more watts • Less weight and substantially lower vibrations • Dual hammer control system Makita, Britain’s number 1 professional power tool manufacturer, has introduced the latest version of the very popular 12kg rotary hammer drill that offers a host of benefits including more impact power and even lower vibration than the previous model which has set the benchmark for rental and operator success. The new Makita HR5212C AVT rotary demolition hammer weighs in at just 11.9kg and features the proven and patented Makita Anti Vibration Technology of dynamic vibration absorber. This uses the pneumatic air pressure of the impact piston to move a counterweight in the body of the machine to dampen out the vibrations.

MUV electric wheelbarrow wheels away inefficiency The new MUV Electric Wheelbarrow, or minidumper, from Nu-Star Material Handling not only allows operators to transport heavy loads with ease, it eliminates the unnecessary ergonomic challenges and production halts associated with traditional wheelbarrow solutions.

Furthermore, the savings made in reduced labour and enhanced efficiency ensure rapid return on investment in sectors that include construction and landscaping. Demanding industries such as construction call for increased profitability and efficiency, while at the same time protecting workers from over-

exertion. The MUV Electric Wheelbarrow eliminates the pushing and pulling required when using a conventional manual wheelbarrow and, since it has a push-button operated electric dump (capable of tipping loads up to 350kg), it also removes the lifting effort required when emptying/dumping a ENQUIRY-Card 582

wheelbarrow. With a choice of either 800W or 1,200W DC electric drive motors, the MUV Electric Wheelbarrow is virtually noise free in its operation, making it ideal for internal use and in areas where noise-pollution is a concern for local residents. Since there are no handle-bar vibrations to cause Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) or ‘dead finger’ the Electric Wheelbarrow may be used without having to assess this potential risk to the operator The MUV Electric Wheelbarrow is available with both moulded industrial plastic and galvanized steel tubs, which may be interchanged by removing locking detent pins on the subframe. Other attachments, such as a flat-bed for transporting bricks, tiles and blocks are also available. Power comes from two 12V, 90AHr batteries, each is sealedfor-life and maintenance free. The waterproof battery charger is fitted on-board and may be connected to either a 220V or 110V power supply. The batteries and battery charger are matched to enable opportunity charging, at any point in the charging cycle, thereby considerably extending run-time. A coloured, LED

battery-charge indicator gauge on the control panel clearly shows the battery state. Featuring a highly manoeuvrable design, the MUV Electric Wheelbarrow is operated using an infinitely variable, twist-grip throttle on the right handle in conjunction with a forwards/backwards direction switch on the control panel. Maximum speed is up to 4.6km/h for the 800W version and up to 6km/h for 1,200W version. An additional ‘tortoise’ mode switch on the control panel reduces maximum speed by 50% to enable inch-perfect positioning when activating the electric-tip and to help achieve a graduated release of the wheelbarrow contents.
