Velux® rewards customers all year round Self-builders and roof window installers across the UK and Ireland can claim rewards, redeemable at top brand retailers and restaurants, every time they buy any VELUX® roof windows, flat roof windows and sun tunnels in 2017. In the UK the rewards are redeemable at a range of retailers, including M&S, John Lewis, Argos, Pizza Express, Thomas Cook, Curry’s/PC World and Ticketmaster. VELUX intends to expand on this range of partners throughout 2017 to offer customers even more choice of where to spend their rewards. Customers can earn rewards from £3 to £30 per product, with hand-picked partners to suit everyone in the family. Each product needs to be registered within 45 days of purchase. To start gaining rewards, customers simply need to register with VELUX online at www.velux.co.uk/rewards. Using the new VELUX rewards calculator, installers can see exactly how much they will earn for each product they buy.

Richard McArthur, Marketing Manager from VELUX said: “We’re urging installers to take advantage of the fantastic rewards available to them when buying from the VELUX range. If you’re regularly buying VELUX products, the rewards can quickly add up. In fact, before you know it, you could have enough to take the family away on holiday. It only takes a couple of minutes to log every purchase from your computer or smartphone, so wherever and whenever you’re buying VELUX products, you’ll always be rewarded. “We know that our customers enjoy rewards that allow them to give themselves and their families a treat, so partnering with some of the country’s best loved retailers and restaurants is a great way to say ‘thank you’ for the continued use of our products and service. Whether you are a frequent installer of VELUX products or use them just a few times a year it really makes sense to join VELUX Rewards and start earning points with every purchase.”

BRITAIN’S BEST BACON BUTTY LOCATIONS REVEALED

Britain’s best bacon butties have been revealed, following a monthlong hunt. As part of the nation-wide competition, tradespeople were asked to nominate the butty establishment they feel makes the country’s best bacon sandwich - whether that’s a café, restaurant, hotel or roadside van. JoJo’s Breakfast Bar in Gloucester, Burger Dan’s in Norwich, Sparks Will Fry in Widnes, Giltbrook Shop in Cob Nottingham, Straw Kitchen in Warwickshire, The Kitchen Table in West Hamstead, Ockham Bites in Surrey, the Lunch Box in Kent, Hackney City Farm in London and Castle Café in Northwich have been crowned the winners of IronmongeryDirect’s Britain’s Best Bacon Butty competition. After receiving hundreds of entries for the competition, IronmongeryDirect revealed the top 10 establishments across the country, as voted for by tradespeople. All 10 winners have been placed on to a dedicated Bacon Butty map, which highlights where in the UK tradespeople can get their hands on the best bacon sandwiches. So, wherever they are on a job, hard working tradespeople can make sure they start their day off in the right way with a hearty breakfast. The competition was launched following recent research by IronmongeryDirect, which found that the classic bacon sandwich is the breakfast of choice for our nation’s tradespeople. A survey of 2,014 workers found that 72% of tradespeople agree the hearty sandwich is their workplace snack of choice. Every tradesperson who entered a nomination was placed into a prize draw to win one of five £100 Amazon vouchers. Chris Wardle from Stalybridge, Paul Rainbow from Norfolk, Hally Jones from Northampton, Nigel Chambers from Gloucester and David Cable from Oxford have been named as the lucky winners of the Amazon vouchers. Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said: “Bacon sandwiches are a classic breakfast choice for those on the go, which explains why they have been named as the snack of choice by the UK’s tradepeople. “We know that a tradesperson’s job can be physically demanding, so it’s important to kick-start the day with a hearty breakfast. That’s why we launched our competition to find those breakfast heroes who provide the perfect sandwich to keep our nation of workers powering on throughout the day. Now tradespeople across the country can visit our dedicated Butty map so they can get their hands on a good breakfast wherever their work takes them.” To view the official Bacon Butty map, please visit http://www.ironmongery direct.co.uk/research/britainsbest-bacon-butty/ www.mclink.co.uk/1022-102 ENQUIRY-Card 102

Eighteen college students from across the UK took part in tiling, decorating and carpentry challenges at the competition’s Grand Final which was held at Dunlop’s Innovation and Technology Centre in Stokeon-Trent on Thursday (15th June). Following challenges Jason was named the winner and

Resiblock is top of the list for Van Der2Vlist Car Park

A new 250m Car Park for the employees of one of Europe’s leading Heavy Haulage specialists has been installed, and now sealed using Resiblock ‘22’. The Car park was part of a larger 3000m2 development of Van Der Vlist’s base on Burma Drive, Hull. Resiblock ‘22’ was selected following consultations between Resiblock, Keyline (Hull) and Contractors Wright Civil Engineers. The previous success of Resiblock ‘22’ at Port of Salalah, Oman, played a significant role in the selection of Resiblock ‘22’ for this transporter base. Port of Salalah, much like the Van Der Vlist site, expected large, regular volumes of traffic, with sand loss and paver destabilisation being a major concern. The long-lasting sealing, stabilising and paver protection provided by Resiblock ‘22’has led to the Resiblock ‘22’ product being used at multiple sites each year, now including Van Der Vlist in Hull. www.mclink.co.uk/1022-104 104 11:30 ENQUIRY-Card Page 1

Flexseal demonstrate product quality with new WRc Approval

High quality building design is key to meeting noise challenges

The Unisaddle FA150U, a new lateral connection product made by Flexseal, has received WRc approval. The Unisaddle is designed to connect DN150 lateral pipes into a concrete or clay pipeline. Flexseal claim the product is a ‘one-size-fits-all’ connection when combined with a Flexseal Mulitbush, as a secure connection can be made between any DN150 lateral pipe material and any concrete or clay pipe from DN300 and above, providing the wall thickness of the larger pipe is a minimum or 27.5mm. “This is the most universal lateral connection ever launched by Flexseal and we’re proud to have the product outperform all of the strict testing criteria set out by WRc. We always develop products with customers in mind and endeavour to solve real site issues.

In conjunction with International Noise Awareness Day, manufacturer ROCKWOOL UK has recently published a report on the impact of noise in London. Entitled, ‘Good Growth, Quiet Buildings: Exploring the impact of noise in a growing city and solutions in the built environment’, the report draws together information on health impacts, costs and government policy and highlights how growth in high density living coupled with the move towards a 24-hour economy means that London will continue to face challenges in achieving good growth and a good night’s sleep. Noise is already the number one complaint in hotels in London, whilst it’s also one of the main reasons given by Londoners for moving out of the city – with 41% citing it as a reason for leaving.

New Mighton Machine Recieves Glowing Review The range of machinery from Mighton Products has grown again with the recent addition of the innovative X-Cut™ machine. Developed by Mighton’s in-house experts to improve the painstaking task of cross-jointing glazing bars, this compact semi-automatic milling machine measures just under 40cm wide and 45cm high. Mighton gave Tibby Singh, the former BBC Young Carpenter of the Year and now a professional tools and tech tester and reviewer, the opportunity to trial the X-Cut™ machine and see if mighty things really do come in small packages. Tibby considered the task that the XCut™ has been produced to tackle: “Making any cross detail look strong and well finished can be a tricky task especially if you’re short on time. Various shortcut methods exist of course, such as using jointing clips, but none of these compare to an authentic cross joint,” he said.

“There are a number of 45 degree angles incorporated in a traditional cross joint, making it a little more complex to achieve, so I was surprised how well the X-Cut™ machine simplifies the process. The machine itself was quick and easy to set up, the tools were easy to interchange and there was no lengthy manual or complicated computer program to learn before being able to get started,” he continued. Once assembled, the X-Cut™ machine adjusts to accept bead profiles measuring anywhere from 9mm to 19mm in height and 12mm to 38mm wide. Any lengths over 500mm can be used with the option to add extending arms either side of the machine for ease of loading longer sections. “After slotting my chosen bead into place the machine’s three cutters then worked together to produce the cross cut,” explained Tibby. “Two cutters, one on either side, move up and down to

produce two clean 45 degree cut outs whilst any dust is removed through the 63mm extraction outlet. This is followed by a third flute cutter gliding horizontally through the bead to create a hollowed-out section designed to accept other interlocking parts. Speed control is variable between 12,000 and 18,000 RPM to suit different materials, but on average it takes only 15 seconds before the cutting is complete. “Even at this speed the X-Cut™ maintains a consistent high level of finish,” added Tibby, who writes about tool tech for trade magazines as well as demonstrating and evaluating products in the UK and overseas. “This is aided by features such as the thickness gauge tool. When setting the cutting depth required the X-Cut™ is designed to automatically increase measurements by half a millimetre, ensuring all components comfortably slot together every time.”

Breather Foil FR brings benefits for Bishop Stortford Builder The performance potential and versatility of YBS Insulation’s Breather Foil FR for use in timber frame construction has been elegantly illustrated through a high specification residential development in an East Hertfordshire village,

Cembrit offers new choice for Weatherboard

Jet vac technology to infinity and beyond!

Today, the leading fibre cement building product manufacturer, Cembrit, is entering the UK market with a brand-new fibre cement weatherboard – Cembrit Plank. Extremely versatile, low in maintenance, and rot, rust, warp, crack, sun, heat, rain and fire resistant, this board is an excellent alternative to timber and plastic based alternatives. The overlapping plank is designed to look like painted timber, but will retain its attractive appearance long after alternatives have started to age. Furthermore, Cembrit Plank does not require toxic preservative treatments in the way timber weatherboarding does. Although there are other fibre cement weatherboards available, Cembrit has responded to market demand and offers Cembrit Plank, which is warrantied for 15 years.

Water jetting and vacuuming technology supplied by Lanes Group has been used to help build a structure that will define high-tech - the new physics building at Oxford University. The new Beecroft Building will be home to some of the world's leading scientists doing cutting edge research. Lanes was commissioned by principal contractor Laing O'Rourke to carry out water jet cleaning of the specialist groundwater drainage system built into the concrete shell of the basement structure. The drainage system, made up of about 200 metres of 100mmdiameter pipe, feeds groundwater into a well. When the building is operational, a pump will discharge the water into the surface water drainage system. Lanes, the UK's largest independent drainage specialist, deployed a jet vac tanker to carry out the work. Its jetting and vacuum hoses were guided to the bottom of the basement via the building's lift shaft.

The project at Furneux Pelham, near Bishop Stortford, features an enclave of five homes priced at up to £1 million, whose elevations display a blend of timber cladding, render and brickwork, all employed to clad a factory fabricated timber frame system. Importantly, the Breather Foil FR specified by Land & County Development and the consultant, Helix Design will fulfil multiple roles. Fitted over the outer face of the sheathing board as the panels are fabricated, the breathable bubble membrane functions to not only allow moisture to escape from the fabric of the building, but protects the timber and insulation material from the elements as work proceeds. Crucially it is also flame retardant and acts to enhance the overall thermal performance of the building envelope. This thermal enhancement comes partly from the insulating value of the sheet’s 4mm thick structure and also the reflectance of the foil face. While Breather Foil FR is frequently used to protect timber frame systems containing mineral wool or PIR insulation, in the case of the Land & Country Developments scheme in Furneux Pelham, the design team opted to utilise YBS Insulation’s SuperQuilt: a 19 ply material including layers of foil, expanded polyethylene and polyester

wadding. YBS Insulation’s technical advisory service carried out a series of heat loss calculations for Land & Country – reducing the size of timber stud required from a typical 140mm thickness to just 90mm. Together, the two materials supplied through Munster Insulation, help achieve an overall U-value for the wall of 0.18 W/m2: fully complying with the current version of Part L to the Building Regulations and creating valuable extra space within the rooms to the new homes. Land & County Development is a small company established in 2009, covering the north of Essex into Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, which specialises in constructing high quality timber framed and modular homes, styled for contemporary living in a traditional style, sympathetic to the surrounding environment. The five homes nearing completion in Furneux Pelham, range in size from two to four bedroom, with master en-suites as well as many luxury features.

BASF Launches New Generation of Eco-Friendly Spray Foam Insulation The construction industry is faced with major challenges in the coming years. In a wide range of projects – new buildings, restorations, and interior finish – there will be big demand for progressive and sustainable products. So how can we reconcile energy efficiency, architectural ambition, and superlative home comfort? With its new Elastospray® LWP spray foam insulation, BASF combines maximum insulation performance with the best possible environmental protection. Performing strongly for energyefficient and esthetically exciting construction The Elastospray® LWP systems are the consistent further development of the proven spray foams from BASF. In addition to improving environmental compatibility, they deliver the accustomed superlative insulation, thanks in particular to its closed-cell structure.

Protection against groundwater ingress as well as gases and chemicals is offered by DualProof – a brand new two-layer durable watertight solution for below ground structures from Delta Membrane Systems. This is a fully and permanently bonded, pre-applied membrane which is fitted prior to the fixing of steel reinforcement, and the concrete pour. It comprises a sealed two-layer flexible pvc membrane laminated with a nonwoven polypropylene fleece. This fleece makes use of FiberTex technology which gives the necessary bond to the concrete, as it integrates into the concrete when poured giving a strong mechanical bond once cured. It then prevents any lateral water migration between the membrane and the structural concrete, and it even seals small cracks in the concrete. www.mclink.co.uk/1022-113 ENQUIRY-Card 113

Demanding professionals rate Bahco’s new saws ‘a cut above’

The most powerful mains oscillating multi tool in the world Following the successful launch of the AFSC18QSL FEIN is now proud to announce the release of the new SuperCut Construction FSC500QSL. Both versions of the SuperCut are the most powerful OMT’s available and are equipped with FEIN’s innovative Starlock Max tool mounting system. The Starlock Max system allows the user to change accessories in less than three seconds, so more time can be devoted to the task in hand. In addition the FSC500QSL can now use all types of Starlock blades (Starlock, Starlock Plus and Starlock Max) whereas its predecessor (the FSC2.0Q) was restricted to just the SuperCut blades unless an adaptor was fitted. Both the corded and cordless FEIN SuperCut machines feature the latest innovative design, which fully decouples the self-supported motor from the motor housing by using flexible dampening elements.

Following tough workplace testing by 400 independent trade professionals, coupled with major investment in advanced manufacturing technology, Bahco’s latest range of handsaws is winning praise within the UK construction industry. With their classic, yet contemporary design, Bahco’s Superior, ProfCut and PrizeCut saws set new standards in cutting performance, long-lasting blade sharpness and their ability to cut many different materials in comfort and safety. Manufactured in Sweden by Bahco engineers, they are available in a wide range of types, toothing and tooth pitch, with optional versions for coarse, medium, fine, precision and special cutting. Blade lengths range from a 12 tenon, 14 veneer and 20 precision saw to 22 and 24 lengths for coarse and medium cutting. An angled nose enables better access in tight places.

Solving the jigsaw piece puzzle ~ Easily overcoming common kitchen installation issues ~

In 2015, over 594,000 people in the UK spent more than £4,000 on a fitted kitchen. Here John Cove, marketing manager at power tool accessories and hand tool specialist, Starrett, explains how contractors can make the most of the boom. Homeowners are increasingly prioritising the kitchen over other areas of the home due to the rising popularity of open plan living and multifunctional spaces. With such a rise in demand, kitchen installers are increasingly faced with challenging design requirements and materials that can often feel like an impossible jigsaw puzzle. Choosing the right jigsaw blade can be the missing piece that ultimately improves installation methods and quality of finish. Because the current industry trend for sleek, minimalist and contemporary kitchens shows no sign of slowing down, kitchen contractors and installers are being faced with an ever-expanding range of materials. Wood, metal, plastic, ceramics, stone and fibreglass are all common parts of a homeowner’s design requirements, making the need for high quality power tools and accessories greater than ever. While jigsaws are amongst the most popular power tools used by kitchen fitters, due to the tool's resilience and powerful performance, frequent chipping of coated surfaces, including worktops and kitchen shelving, is a common problem for installers. Innovative technologies and materials, including Starrett’s patented bimetal material and Dual Cut blades, provide the perfect solution for multipurpose cutting that creates the highest quality finishes in the easiest way possible. Bimetal Unique Tool manufacturers have for decades used bimetal materials — the layering of one type of metal on top of another — in the manufacture of saw blades for a wide range of industries. Bimetal fulfils a wide range of installation requirements by taking advantage of the flexibility of both hard and soft materials.

Starrett’s bimetal unique technology is a patented process which takes the production of bimetal material to a new level. Benefits for installers include much stronger teeth, improved heat resistance and greater blade life, when compared against competitive bimetal products. No chipping to the edge of the cut It is widely understood amongst installers that damage to the edge of the material being cut can be the bane

of any installation. Because jigsaw blades are prone to chipping the coated surface of a material as the blade leaves the cut, many installers choose to cut from the underside of the material or cover the coating in masking tape in an attempt to combat this problem. This adds substantial time and risk to any job, in addition the rise in sleek kitchen designs has resulted in underneath edges often being left exposed as part of the interior style, meaning that chipping of the undersides of edging, shelving and other surfaces could be visible. In an attempt to combat chipping on the top surface, many jigsaw blade manufacturers offer blades with the teeth reversed so that the jigsaw cuts on the downstroke rather than the usual upstroke. Although this might initially appear to be a solution, the design specification of the blade makes installer use difficult. The downcut positioning can cause the blades to cut off straight vertically due to the sheer pressure of the blades pushing away from the machine. Even though the cuts might slant by only a few millimetres, the installation of sinks and other appliances can become a significant problem. To combat this issue, the Starrett BU310T jigsaw blade cuts as normal on the upward stroke of the machine but features ground teeth which create exceptional sharpness for a high profile finish. There is also no set on the teeth of the blade which limits further the

potential for chipping of the surface coating. The result is a worktop cut straight, and cut from the top with a high quality, chip free surface finish. Starrett’s bespoke Dual Cut jigsaw blades are uniquely developed to prevent the chipping of coated surfaces and slanting to create a polished finish on both sides of the material. The Dual Cut blade’s teeth are variable in size, with the spacing between the teeth also variable to prevent chipping on both sides, making it the ideal tool to cut shelf board and other similar materials. As the teeth point toward the centre of the blade, rather than downwards like traditional blades, resistance, durability and productivity for straight, curved and complex contour cuts is much simpler and more straightforward. As latest materials and aesthetics provide kitchen fitters with the opportunity to create installations that push traditional design boundaries, jigsaw blades that increase efficiency and reduce time scales provide the final piece of the puzzle for installers. The 594,000 people in the UK spending more than £4000 on a kitchen can sleep soundly, safe in the knowledge that the result will look every bit as good as they expect. www.starrett.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/1022-526 ENQUIRY-Card 526

Stabila LAX 300G laser measure is beaming with accuracy & precision Identifying laser markings when working in a brightly lit building can prove tricky, but not with the Stabila LAX 300G laser, now available from Hyde. With green laser lines for optimum visibility in bright indoor lighting conditions, the new cross line laser is a must for any tradesman’s tool bag. In fact, Stabila GREENBEAM technology means that the laser lines are four times more visible to the human eye than red lines, ensuring greater accuracy and fewer marking errors no matter what

the conditions. Thanks to highperformance optics, the green laser is focused into a fine, sharp line for precision every time, while the outstanding clarity of the lines enables

conventional red lasers, even over longer distances. The self-levelling line laser is the ideal tool for all interior construction tasks, from fitting and aligning electrical installations, drywall construction and marking out tile layouts, to levelling window heights, constructing kitchen cupboards and aligning worktops. The versatile technology provides crossline, independent horizontal or vertical lines which covers almost the entire room, with plumb-line dots upwards and downwards. Pendulum technology designed for the construction site ensures quick selflevelling for maximum efficiency, while the compact yet shock absorbent housing has an extendable foot for height adjustment for working directly on U-profiles. Operating the LAX 300G is simple too, with a single-button operation for easy changeover of functions. The laser can be used all day without needing to be recharged, thanks to the latest generation of energy-saving laser diodes, while a handy belt pouch means the tool can be kept conveniently close to hand, while a two-year guarantee provides complete peace of mind.

STYLISH RAINWATER SYSTEMS COMPLEMENT UNIQUE DEVELOPMENT Cyden Homes engaged with national award winning architect, Jonathan Hendry Associates, to bring to fruition the innovative Par 3 in Humberston - a contemporary village development within a protected and managed environment. Among the fairways of the former Humberston Golf Course, meticulously designed residences were constructed by Cyden Homes to take maximum advantage of the natural environment. With the different styles and finishes to the houses, reflecting the surrounding natural beauty, it was important that the chosen rainwater system emulated the uniqueness of the buildings’ exteriors.

“In respect of the guttering and down pipes, the architect had specified milled finish aluminium rainwater goods to go with the contemporary external design. Our fitter, John Gothorpe had dealt with Yeoman Rainguard previously and recommended we got in contact.” Explained Peter Bond, sales & marketing director for Cyden Homes. Yeoman Rainguard’s SL Aluminium products were

decided upon, in a milled finish, to complement the building materials used for the development. SL Aluminium half round 125 x 75mm gutters along with 75mm dia. down pipes were installed on the residences with Plain Cast Aluminium Hoppers added to some garage/out buildings. Aluminium rainwater systems not only offer aesthetic advantages but are also easy and quick to fit saving on site installation times when fitting to multiple units. Being a very durable product Rainguard SL Aluminium rainwater systems will offer a long and maintenance free lifecycle, added to the fact that it is a 100% recyclable material, it becomes an ecologically sound choice. “The style of finish on Yeoman Rainguard SL gutters and downpipes has been well received by the customers as it is a ‘noticeable’ addition, helping to affirm the uniqueness of the development.” Concluded Mr Bond.

RAINWATER SYSTEMS FROM KAYFLOW Never a case of one-size fits all. Kayflow sees SuperDeep170 as being ideal for large commercial developments such as agricultural buildings, hospitals etc

When it comes to choosing the correct rainwater system for construction projects in the UK, it is definitely not a case of one size fits all. Here we take a look at how one of the leading manufacturers has developed a portfolio of products designed to cope with the wide range of rainfall condition experienced in different areas of the country If there is one characteristic that British people are known for all over the World, it’s probably our obsession with the weather. As children, we only seem to remember the long hot days of summer. Did they really happen? Did our Dads actually manage to keep the barbecue alight through the downpours? Our rose-tinted memories may say “yes” but reality was somewhat different! And when the first flakes of winter snow arrive, does the whole country goes into panic mode with road, railway and airport disruption at every turn? Oh, yes it does! The real problem with the British weather is that it is so variable. In some areas of the country – Wales, Scotland, The Pennines etc, we see a huge amount of rainfall – as much as 180 inches per year, making them some of the wettest locations in Europe. In other areas – London, East Yorkshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, much less rainfall occurs – as little as 24 inches per year, making them some of the driest areas

of the country. It’s also a little-known fact that Colchester, Clacton and Ipswich actually have less annual rainfall than the Middle Eastern cities of Jerusalem and Beirut. Hard to believe, but true.

Right system, right capacity. But what does all this mean in the real world of UK construction? The simple answer, according to roofline and rainwater systems specialist, Kayflow, is to provide the market with guttering systems with the appropriate capacity to do their job with optimal efficiency, whatever the prevailing conditions may be.

gutter and nearly 2.5 times more water than a standard deep system. Kayflow sees SuperDeep170 as being ideal for large commercial developments such as agricultural buildings, hospitals, schools and factories. These types of buildings generally have large roof areas with high run-off potential and therefore need a much bigger capacity system.

Expansion & Contraction Heat build-up is sometimes seen as a downside to large capacity, dark coloured PVC guttering systems due to the volume of material in their

According to Kayflow, SuperDeep170 can even reduce the number of downpipes needed with consequent reduction in the frequency and lengths of below ground connections etc.

Super Strength For areas of high rainfall intensity, Kayflow has developed a SuperDeep170, a PVC profile guttering system, designed to handle a much higher flow rate than standard guttering. With a market leading flow rate of around 4.3 litres per second, it has the capacity to carry over 4.5 times more water than a standard half round

A consequence of increased capacity is an increase in potential weight-loading and resulting pressure on the gutter fixing system. The high strength bracketing developed for SuperDeep170 is said to be capable of holding over 125kg on one fascia bracket and well able to handle the gutter system running at full capacity.

A SuperDeep170 bracket can hold over 125kg

Thermal expansion and contraction can result in an increased risk of leaks but Kayflow has raised the benchmark for the industry by coextruding the SuperDeep170 gutter profile onto a white base with a black or grey outer skin. The white base material helps reduce heat build-up through reflection, whereas a black or dark, through-colour would tend to absorb heat and increase the risk of expansion/contraction.

Dallmer ‘Red Zone’

Roof Drains The unit’s red colour identifies it as a separate system from the conventional flat roof drainage and is intended to provide overflow when the main outlets are being overwhelmed. Crucially, the versatile design can be connected to chutes or to pipework in gravity or siphonic systems. This clears excess storm-water quickly before it can find vulnerable joints (typically where the waterproofing meets upstands) or exert excess structural loads. ‘Red’ Drain variants can be installed as part of a new roof or retrofitted into an existing one and are adjustable to suit different insulation thicknesses and waterproofing systems. The latter include Bitumen felt, single

ply PVC, TPO, EPDM as well as liquid applied membranes. The ‘Red’ Drain will either be situated on the flat roof itself or within a box gutter where it can be adjusted to work when the standing water has reached an excess depth of typically 30 mm up to a maximum of 100mm. Furthermore, because of the ‘Red’ Drain’s design it compensates for the tendency of secondary drainage systems to silt up through their occasional usage. This height adjustability can be of particular importance if the primary drainage system is siphonic as setting the overflow too low could rob the siphonic system of water, admitting air

and rendering it ineffective. A spokesperson for Dallmer commented: “All too frequently, we see North America and Europe experience new record rainfall, which has led to water ponding on flat roofs : this can cause serious damage, especially to lightweight steel structures. Installing our ‘Red’ Drains as overflows for a flat roof drainage system, can guard against these extreme events, protecting both property and the occupants.” “Whatever the type of roof make-up or the pipework system used there is a ‘Red’ Drain suitable for the job They offer high flow rates as well as straightforward

installation and the building remains properly protected.” For more information on ‘Red’ Drain visit www.dallmer.de www.mclink.co.uk/1022-536 ENQUIRY-Card 536

Danger of Local Pollution Rises as Off-Mains Drainage in England and Wales Becomes ‘Free-for-All’ Leading Wastewater Management experts, Kingspan Klargester, are advising self-builders to get their drainage right or risk being prosecuted for causing pollution. The advice comes following concerns that owners of offmains properties in England and Wales are making choices for dealing with wastewater based on cost rather than considering the impact this might have on the environment. There are also reports from installers suggesting that local pollution incidents caused by inappropriate installations of septic tanks are rising. Currently, if a property is offmains drainage and cannot be connected to a mains sewer, even with a pumping station (which must be the first option), then wastewater can be dealt with within the property’s boundaries typically using a septic tank or sewage treatment plant. The legal responsibility for the discharge lies with the

property’s owner. However, changes to legislation in England and Wales in 2010, allied to the rise in Internet shopping are believed to have contributed to a recent increase in septic tank purchases over sewage treatment plants, even though drainage conditions across the UK are such that the opposite should be the case. “It’s our belief that up to 75 per cent of discharges from private drainage systems are probably illegal,” says Kingspan Klargester's Commercial Director UK, Dave Vincent. “It’s a worrying trend which is probably exacerbated because it’s an issue which many people find too embarrassing to discuss openly. “The tendency to just type 'septic tanks' into search engines is probably because it is currently the best-known and

cheapest solution if you're offmains drainage. But a septic tank is not always the best way to treat sewage, and if a high quality septic tank isn’t chosen carefully and installed correctly, then it can lead to problems for the homeowner, even making them liable for prosecution.” What’s more, the company’s accredited installers are reporting that calls are being made to their helplines when people are starting to notice there is a problem, or can no longer tolerate the consequences – which is often too late. Dave continues: “First, we want people to understand that sewage treatment need not be unpleasant or in any way anti-

social! Top-end sewage treatment plants such as BioDisc produce clear - and odourless - overflow that is environmentally acceptable. You can even discharge it directly into watercourses, without affecting the water quality or wildlife, dependent on appropriate location and outflow quantity and Regulator approval.” “Septic tanks do not treat waste, they simply produce soluble waste from solids which is then discharged and filtered through the ground, usually requiring a reed bed. They can pollute groundwater – our drinking water essentially - as well as streams, ponds and rivers. If the ground conditions

don’t allow efficient filtration, then sooner or later you will know about it.” Problems associated with local pollution in England and Wales appear to be increasing since changes were introduced to legislation in 2010. Prior to then, all homeowners had to apply to the Environment Agency for a Consent to Discharge, which prioritised sewage treatment plants over septic tank installations. Protect yourself and your family, by installing a sewage treatment plant.” For more information/advice: www.kingspanklargester.com . www.mclink.co.uk/1022-537 ENQUIRY-Card 537

EVERYONE’S GOING GREY! Freefoam Building Products are delighted to showcase this recent installation using their complete range of grey PVC roofline and cladding products. The property in Leicestershire originally featured a render finish to the entire upper level. It had become patchy and discoloured and either needed replacing or covering. Likewise the white fascia and black guttering were also in need of updating. The homeowner was introduced to the Freefoam range by local supplier Tru Plastics Ltd.

Fitting PVC cladding to the exterior gave the property an instant facelift. The homeowner chose Fortex Pro, a Double Shiplap style board, in Slate Grey. Adding a woodgrain foil finish fascia and soffit in Anthracite Grey and a gutter system in the same shade created an attractive co-ordinated look. Russell Skellett from Tru Plastics explained “Being able to offer homeowners a complete suite of products in coordinating and matching colours is a major USP for our company. Our customers are asking more and more for colour and the Freefoam range gives us the perfect solution Trends are changing for external building products particularly doors, windows and roofline. For many years white was the only option and the only choice. Colour was rationed and difficult to get and often had to be ordered well in advance and in large quantities. But things have changed. Developers, architects and specifiers have seen the advantages of using colour as a signature for their building projects. And homeowners, inspired by property and home improvement programmes, now regularly choose colour as they look to personalise their property and give it the ‘wow’ factor Freefoam is the colour specialist. Manufacturing fascia and soffit in eight stunning shades and eight woodgrain finishes alongside cladding products in ten beautiful contemporary shades gives customers a really wide choice. Introducing the

METROPOLIS grating

Ductile iron gratings on surface water drainage channels don’t necessarily need to be utilitarian in appearance with geometric slots or meshes. Inspired by the patterns made by water flowing down a stream, the surface design of the Hauraton METROPOLIS grating is reminiscent of the ART NOUVEAU style and later ART DECO period. Planners and landscape architects can now choose this grating to add a touch of class to their schemes in historic and pre-modern townscapes or any surface drainage project where an aesthetic, more decretive look is desired. The METROPOLIS grating is sold separately to fit FASERFIX® KS channels

or factory fitted to RECYFIX® PRO channels. Gratings are available in nominal widths of 100mm and 200 mm Sizing details for FASERFIX® KS 100 and FASERFIX® KS 200, with METROPOLIS gratings can be found in the Hauraton CIVILS catalogue. Sizing details for RECYFIX® PRO 100 and RECYFIX® PRO 200, with METROPOLIS gratings can be found in the Hauraton LANDSCAPE catalogue. The channels provide a loading capacity up to Class D400. All METROPOLIS grating are finished in anticorrosion, Black KTL finish. www.mclink.co.uk/1022-541 ENQUIRY-Card 541

DALLMER ANTIFLOODING VALVES GIVE PEACE OF MIND In these days of increasingly volatile weather, it is prudent to fit anti-flooding valves to any inlet water pipes below floodable level to prevent storm water, or at worst sewage, from backflowing to inundate bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms and wet rooms of all types. Dallmer, the German supplier of high quality, practical and often innovative drainage products manufactures a range of valves under the Stausafe name that, when fitted to the inlet pipe, offer instant protection against the very real dangers of back-flow in times of storm or flood.

All the models in Dallmer’s Stausafe range of valves have ABS housings but all moving parts are in high quality stainless steel to ensure precision operation at all times. The Stausafe E and H valves are designed to deal with rainwater only and operate via a pivoted flap in stainless steel that automatically closes when a surge in water supply occurs.

designed specifically to deal with the rigours of sewage-ridden flood water. The Stausafe F is fitted with an electronic flood sensor linked to the first pivoted flap that closes automatically and is fitted with an electrically operated lock and has the back up of a second self-operating flap this time with the manual lock that is standard on he other models.

The RS model is remarkably robust valve operating with two pivoted flaps one behind the other in the pipe and is capable of withstanding severe flow increases with ease while the top of the range F valve

It even has the ‘belt and braces’ security of battery operation should the mains power fail and a warning lamp or buzzer can be incorporated if desired. All models have an inspection cover with wing nut

operation so that the housing can be opened for maintenance without the need for tools and are available in four standard pipe sizes. Dallmer’s Stausafe range of anti-flooding valves offer much needed security in basements or any other area where storm or flood damage is a danger. The model range has been designed to suit most individual needs in these circumstances. www.mclink.co.uk/1022-542 ENQUIRY-Card 542

was part funded through the Heart-ofthe-South-West Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). A cost effective lifetime cost was the key aspect of the project, along with a robust drainage system which would never need to be replaced as there is a high level of trafficking within the area; Derriford hospital is Plymouth’s 2nd busiest bus interchange, and the constant bus overrun meant a high loading drainage solution was crucial. Marshalls Drexus Pave Drain was chosen as it provides a cost-effective solution, which is robust enough to withstand frequent heavy vehicle overrun. Even with the heavy trafficking, the system will never need to be replaced keeping the lifetime costs extremely low. Through Marshalls’ concrete expertise and heritage in natural stone, Drexus Pave Drain was developed to complement the company’s most popular paving products. By having a coordinating top unit, the drainage can blend seamlessly with the surrounding paving, with no need to break up the overall aesthetic with a traditional grated solution, whilst also retaining an excellent inlet and loading capacity.

The Derriford Hospital Interchange scheme is part of a master plan of highway improvements on and around the city’s ‘northern corridor’, connecting with the new Marjon Link Road and complementing other schemes such as the Derriford Transport Scheme, where construction has just got under way. The road outside Derriford Hospital has been widened to allow buses to travel in both directions, helping to reduce congestion outside the main entrance and making bus journeys to and from the hospital quicker and more reliable. The scheme will provide better waiting areas for bus and taxi passengers and those getting dropped off or picked up by car, four additional bus stops will be installed, and footpaths widened to provide more space for waiting passengers. Developed in partnership with Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, the scheme cost just over £2 million and

Amey utilised Marshalls’ complimentary design service for the drainage packaging of the scheme which ensured a fast turnaround. This was important as the scheme was delayed by 3-4 months before construction works could proceed, which affected travel in the surrounding area, so speed of construction was essential. Marshalls was ultimately able to deliver a drainage solution which met all the necessary requirements outlined by the client, and which is tough enough to withstand the heavy trafficking throughout its lifetime. www.marshalls.co.uk sales@marshalls.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/1022-543 ENQUIRY-Card 543

FOUNDRY FINISH Hunter Plastics Foundry Finish Rainwater System is a cost effective and easy to install alternative to cast iron. The PVC range looks truly authentic and consists of profiles that emulate the traditional shape of cast iron rainwater systems.

Foundry Finish is an aesthetically pleasing range, which is perfectly suited to the refurbishment of period and listed properties, as well as new, self builds or public sector buildings that require a touch of character. Unlike cast iron, the range is lightweight and virtually maintenance-free. What’s more, it can also be installed without specialist handling equipment or trained personnel. Jon Angrave, Category Manager at Hunter Plastics said: “This is the perfect rainwater solution for those that want the aesthetics of cast iron, without the downsides. The Foundry Finish Rainwater System is available in the ever-popular Half Round profile and the 125mm deep semi elliptical profile - which is ideal for buildings that are located in areas subjected to heavy rainfall. Both benefit from the Surefit fixing system for fast, simple and fail-safe installation.” Unlike expensive traditional cast iron, the Foundry Finish range is not prone to rust and it will also not scratch, delaminate or discolour. Slimmest steel windows complying to current Part L building regulations

Designed for energy efficiency, W30 steel windows from Steel Window Association members are the slimmest steel options currently on the market which comply to current Part L building regulations. For domestic applications, the W30 system is B-rated by the BFRC. Each Brated window incorporates an 18mm double glazed unit, comprising 4mm soft coat low e glass and 4mm clear low iron glass sandwiching a 10mm krypton gas-filled cavity with a warm edge spacer bar. In addition to the outstanding overall thermal performance of the window, the W30 is double weather-stripped to improve weather tightness and thermal efficiency while a chamfered aluminium beading system secures the double glazed units. To prevent any rusting, the steel elements are galvanised and the windows are powder coated to stop further decoration being required. www.mclink.co.uk/1022-127 ENQUIRY-Card 127

Speedset Plus, exclusive to Premdor

Howarth Timber and Building Supplies has one of the UK’s widest ranges of internal doors, from traditional panel doors to contemporary designs thanks to its links with leading UK manufacturers and high-quality imported products. Far from being a simple internal barrier, doors can set the character of the room, which is why Howarth Timber offers so many choices, including traditional cottage doors to sliding doors for those who need to save space. Howarth Timber also offers a selection of glazed internal doors, and even expansive bi-folding doors. For those wishing to create a distinctive appearance or prolong the lifespan of the door, Howarth Timber supplies a wide range of paints, stain and preservatives.

As a result of extensive research in both the New Build sector and the RMI market, Premdor developed SpeedSet Plus, a revolutionary, adjustable internal doorset system which is an industry first and unique in the Building and Construction marketplace. SpeedSet Plus saves on-site time and therefore costs, by allowing the doorset to be adjusted +/- 10mm, to compensate for variances within wall thicknesses of up to 300mm. The clever simplicity of the system means installation can be achieved in less than twenty minutes, alleviating delays and costly joinery skills. With doors factory pre-hung with CE marked latch and adjustable hinges, the SpeedSet Plus doorset package comes complete with white re-coatable, foil faced frame and pre-mitred architrave, requiring minimum on-site decoration.

EUROCELL MODUS FILLS BATH WITH LIGHT Heritage colours and kerb-side appeal were among the factors that persuaded the planning authorities of Bath that Modus PVC-U windows from Eurocell – the UK’s leading manufacturer, distributor and recycler of window, door, conservatory and roofline products – were the appropriate alternative to timber on a prime, exposed location near the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Consisting of 136 upmarket homes selling at up to £1 million apiece, the Ensleigh estate is being developed by Bloor Homes along with another major housebuilder on a former MoD site dating from WW2 that overlooks the Georgian city and is near to its race- and golf course. “The planners originally wanted timber windows but that wouldn’t work for our designs because we wanted to install matching fascias and soffits that fitted beneath considerable eaves. This is on an exposed site at the top of a steep hill so they wouldn’t look great for very long,” explains Paul Baker, Regional Managing Director for Bloor Homes South West. “Timber windows, fascias and soffits would require expensive maintenance because of the scaffolding required to paint them. These PVC-U alternatives not only have kerb-appeal but are maintenance-free”.

Bloor Homes South West had also had experience of the product at other developments throughout the region and had found it answered planning department concerns. It worked with the Eurocell New Build division, which supplied four samples to show the various colours that might work on site and to demonstrate the slim, timber-like sight lines of the Modus. “The foil gives an appearance like timber and the colour palette includes the heritage type colours that fit in with a period environment such as Bath,” comments Paul. Once the Bath and North East Somerset planning department was happy with Bloor’s proposal to use Modus windows in Hazy Grey, it gave the go-ahead for the same product range, but in Agate Grey, to be used at an adjacent development from the other housebuilder. Plans are now going ahead for each housebuilder to construct a further 40 homes on an extension to the original site, with Modus being specified for this development too. Paul Baker says that planners have been visiting the development as Bloor Homes hopes to use Modus in future schemes throughout the South West. He adds that the quality of Eurocell fabricators and installers is also almost as important a factor as the quality of the window itself. In this case Bloor was supplied by A & B Glass (South West) of

Tewkesbury while the neighbouring builder dealt with Leicester-based Unique Windows. Coming with a 12-year guarantee, the Modus system is available in nine solid and woodgrain-effect colours, all of which are available with white internal finishes to create a light and airy living environment. A further range of more than 40 solid and woodgrain effect finishes is available, including colour both sides. BBA certified to function satisfactorily for more than 35 years, the Modus range has a U-value of 1.2 W/m² using 4/20/4 mm sealed double-glazed units. This effective thermal performance is due to

the 75mm six-chamber profile system used in the Modus that enables the range to achieve a U-value as low as 0.7 by installing triple-glazed units. This led to Modus becoming one of the very first systems to achieve the BRFC Window Energy Rating (WER) of A++. This is only awarded to windows with an energy index value equal to or greater than +20; and Modus A++ designs include casement, reversible and tilt and turn. Consisting of 50% post-consumer recycled PVC-U as standard, this range of doors and windows has a smaller carbon footprint than products made or recycled outside of the UK. Eurocell achieves this by employing dual material extrusion technology (DMET) that layers post-consumer recycled and ‘virgin’ material simultaneously, so the recycled material is concentrated in the central core of the profiles where it cannot be seen once the door or window is installed. To simplify specification, Modus BIM models are available to download for free from the Eurocell website. www.eurocell.co.uk. www.mclink.co.uk/1022-551 ENQUIRY-Card 551

ISO-CHEMIE’S HIGH RISE SEALING SOLUTION FOR LONDON FLATS

HIGH performance foam tape from ISO-CHEMIE will provide improved sealing of dozens of new windows being installed as part of a multi-million pound residential refurbishment project in South London. The ISO-BLOCO ONE sealant tape has been specified by Northern Ireland-based window supplier Athena Windows for the Batimet aluminium clad wood windows its fitting at an apartment complex near Clapham Junction. There the tape, which is quick and easy-to-use, is being used to effectively seal window gaps to a 0.8W/M2k rating with added 63dB of sound reduction - the apartments face onto a busy main road - as an integral part of the windows’ eye-catching design. As well as providing a high performance and long lasting airtight solution, the tape ensures the windows, which each weigh up to 250 kg and have been hoisted into position by a crane mounted vacuum lifter, will

remain weather proof to 1000 Pa – the equivalent to 130mph of constant driving rain. Colm O’Neill, managing director of Athena Windows, said: “We were looking for a sealing method to compliment the quality of the windows and found the ISO-BLOCO ONE an ideal one-fit solution. “The impregnated expansion sealing capability of the tape provides good protection against wind, rain and sound penetration, while also complementing the window system.” Up to 70% cost savings can be achieved using the ISOBLOCO ONE foam tape because it enables installers to seal windows from inside the building, avoiding the need to use time consuming and costly external access systems like scaffolding and ladders.

The internal air tight seal has been tested at 1000 Pa pressure difference (20 times more than UK Building Regulations) and tested to achieve 0.00 m³ of air loss. At the same time, depending on tape width, it will also supply a U-Value as low as 0.55W/m2K and reduce sound by up to 63 dB, straight from the box. Product complies with energy saving regulations (EnEV) on windows and doors as well as the RAL quality assurance association and can accommodate extremes of temperature changes – from -30°C to + 80°C. More at www.iso-chemie.co.uk

The tape offers a single product ‘fit and forget’ solution for fast and effective sealing based around the European RAL principles of three level sealing - the inside seal area is more airtight than the external one, allowing any trapped moisture inside the joint, or within the wall, to escape outwards rather than into the building. The external seal area provides weather resistance and breathability, while the intermediate seal area provides extra thermal and acoustic properties and the internal one air tightness and humidity regulation. All three levels are designed to accommodate movement between the adjacent materials.

Another fantastic FIT Show for The VEKA UK Group As FIT Show 2017 drew to a close, it would be hard to describe it as anything other than another success for The VEKA UK Group. With a footfall of over 13,000 people across three days, the event was the perfect opportunity to display and demonstrate a selection of new products and concepts with visitors spoilt for choice when it came to the latest in PVC-U door and window innovations. Guests who came over to our stand were treated to the first look at new innovations for 2017 such as the SmartFold Door, SmartFold Window and the PVC Residential Door and Side Panel Combination. More highlights included

the M70, FlushSash Slim Sightline Window, Bi-Fold Door, VEKA Screen, Vertical Slider (fully mechanically jointed) and Lift & Slide Patio Door from the Imagine range. Also exhibiting at the event were six companies from Independent Network's (previously Network VEKA's) Affiliates Partners; Masterframe, UK Fasteners Ltd, Prefix Systems, Ritec International, Maco Door & Hardware UK Ltd and Trojan Manufacturing Group Ltd, presenting everything from skylights, sash windows and sliding doors, to letterplates, window locks and 'non-stick' glass. The VEKA UK Group's Marketing Director Dawn Stockell said of the event: “FIT Show 2017 has been absolutely great for The VEKA UK Group,

and we have been delighted with the response to the new products we introduced during the event, such as the Imagine Lift & Slide, the newlyenhanced VEKA Vertical Slider and the innovative SmartFold Door. “Events like this are so much more than showcasing our finished products however, and part of the process here for us is to test out some new concepts with visitors and get their feedback on them. This year, we wanted some reallife reactions to a super matte Spectral foil and a smart window with micro chip technology, so there's no better place to glean that than at the FIT Show. “The number of new business leads and enquiries we experienced over the

three-day event was markedly higher than previous years too so we're now looking forward to following up with these, getting customers signed up to the new products, and thinking about the next FIT Show of course!” The biggest ever to date, FIT Show 2017 drew almost 10,000 visitors over three days, a figure that soared to over 13,200 when it took into account people that came back on more than one day. Extended hours on the first day; dubbed 'Big Tuesday' meant that the whole event lasted for 23 hours; longer than ever before. www.mclink.co.uk/1022-554 ENQUIRY-Card 554

CRYSTAL CLEAR BRISTOL COMPLETES COLOURFUL LUMI INSTALLATION

“The homeowners wanted to add a modern, stylish finish to the property on which we had undertaken a complete window refit, and the unique Lumi door in Slate Blue was the perfect finishing touch.” James Mizen, MD of the Bristolbased home improvement specialist explains. Crystal Clear Bristol has been installing high quality windows, doors and As part of a residential renovation project, Crystal Clear Bristol recently conservatories for almost 20 years, and has been offering Apeer products, installed a Lumi composite door with sidelight all finished in Slate Blue. including Apeer70, Modo and Diamond for almost a decade. After adding the Lumi range following its launch, James believes the products’ unique features make it popular with homeowners. The market for home improvements is fast being driven by the homeowners’ modern and contemporary, designfocussed aspirations. Historically there has always been a gap between the homeowners’ desire to create their own grand designs and products that fit the brief, and so when Apeer successfully launched the ground-breaking Lumi System in 2015, it was met by widespread acclaim. Lumi features unique ‘edge-to-edge’ energy efficient triple glazing that is structurally bonded to a core of high strength, glass reinforced profiles. Unlike PVCU, timber and aluminium alternatives, Lumi doesn’t have the profile material on show from the outside. Linda Tomb, Marketing Manager adds: “In response to the feedback we have received since the successful launch of Lumi, we have continued to look at ways to further develop our products and expand the range. Installers see Lumi as a great choice for new-build applications, but we

really want to raise its profile as an equally suitable product for refurbishment projects, and Crystal Clear Bristol’s latest installation is testament to that.” Helping Lumi to meet the still growing customer demand for coloured windows and doors, Slate Blue is just one of the popular colour choices on offer. Joining Anthracite Grey, Black, Light Grey, Chartwell Green and Light Blue, the external finishes are all designed to better withstand the elements and resist fading over time. The internal finish is matched across the trims, windows boards and sills, 11 finishes are available; all of which are designed to complement the more traditional styling of windows and doors. The member’s clubhouse has been sited here for over 50 years due to its suitable sailing waters. The members of the committee decided that the exterior of the building was looking a little tired and a refresh was needed before the new season started at Easter. Remmers Compact Opaque PU topcoat was selected for the job due to its performance characteristics and suitability to coastal locations. Over two weekends of good weather, the clubhouse was transformed and the new colour gave the clubhouse the refreshed look it deserved.

Saniflo 2017 roadshow showcases new products

Saniflo UK, the country’s leading designer and manufacturer of pumps, macerators and shower cubicles, is taking its roadshow on tour again after the success of 2016 – which took in 80 venues in England, Wales and Ireland – to visit independents and merchants nationwide. From now through the autumn, the Saniflo roadshow will educate industry professionals about the company’s 2017 launch of the new products for domestic and commercial markets, which offer greater accessibility than ever before. The 2017 ‘Saniflo Up’ product launch is Saniflo’s biggest in 30 years. Attendees receive live product demonstrations from a member of the Saniflo Field Service team and they have an opportunity to ask any questions. This year, the roadshow truck displays two static Kinedo shower cubicle displays – the Eden and the Kinemagic – plus a working display of a Sanicubic 2 Pro and Sanicom 2. These working displays sit on opposite sides of the van and are connected up via pipework in the roof, which runs down to each unit. Static displays include the new Saniflo Up domestic products and the Sanishower +. The roadshow provides the perfect opportunity for builders and developers to see the new products in the flesh as well as the Kinedo cubicle range which is being installed into new homes across the country thanks to quick and leak free installation. www.mclink.co.uk/1022-564 ENQUIRY-Card 564

STUDOR SHOWS THE WAY TO HEALTH AND HYGIENE IN THE BATHROOM Drainage smells are not only unpleasant, but also a potential health risk Whilst unpleasant, a bad smell in the bathroom is not in itself dangerous. However, it may well be indicative of a more serious and potentially lifethreatening issue. The smell can indicate that the water trap seal – the only barrier between the drainage system and the living space – has been lost, potentially posing serious health risks. Water trap seals started being fitted on bathroom and kitchen fixtures after the 1854 cholera outbreak in London, in which hundreds of people died. Today, cholera is not a risk in the UK, but within all our drainage systems sewer gases and pathogens such as SARS, legionnaires, norovirus and others are always present. For the last 40 years, drainage ventilation expert Studor has been solely focused on developing products that maintain the water trap seals in our buildings. Studor’s Trap-Vent solution, the combination of a water trap and Air Admittance Valve (AAV), can easily be retrofitted to an existing bathroom, and

is also ideal for small group venting in, for example, hotels, care homes and hospitals. It protects the water trap seal between the drainage system and the room, stopping bad odours and pathogens escaping from empty traps. Studor’s UK Managing Director Stephen Taylor comments, “The Trap-

Vent comes with a lifetime guarantee and also reduces siphonage noise, providing a 20dB noise reduction compared to conventional traps. Furthermore, it allows freedom of design for engineers and architects to enable multiple drainage fixtures to link together. It is also highly styled, so eminently suitable for installation in environments where aesthetics is of high importance.” The Studor Trap-Vent is a combined trap with a 50mm water seal and an integral AAV. It reduces the need for secondary ventilating in small fixture groups and replaces conventional S traps and P traps. It is height adjustable

for fully flexible installation, has integrated self-cleaning, and is suitable for bath and shower rooms, providing an excellent solution for problem solving in new builds as well as the retrofit market. Double delight for new Maxtop designs Kitchen and bathroom worktop specialist, Maxtop Quartz Ltd, has unveiled two brand new surface designs to complement its existing range of pre-finished worktops. Available now, Pure White and Pewter Grey will ensure the Maxtop Quartz range offers a modern selection of both sparkling and plain finishes, keeping the product portfolio fresh and on-trend. Inspired by customer needs and preferences, the launch is in response to market demand, providing quality alternatives to solid stone surfaces. Stephen Moss, managing director of Maxtop Quartz Ltd, commented: “The introduction of pure white and sparkling grey surfaces not only means our portfolio offers something for everyone, but also means we’re providing surfaces that complement the very latest interior trends. “Sparkling surfaces have proven extremely popular in the existing range, so the addition of the Pewter Grey design will bolster our offering and is set to be a huge hit with retailers, who are also experiencing a surge in demand for grey products and interiors. “Meanwhile, our Pure White design is the perfect alternative to solid white quartz,

which is usually offered at a significant premium price, pushing it beyond the budget of many projects. Pure White, however, is supplied directly from the distributor’s stock and is as cost-effective as the remainder of the Maxtop Quartz range.” The new designs will replace the company’s existing Emerald and Ochre finishes, which will be phased out in order to make way for new, on-trend surfaces, meaning customers will still have a wide choice but won’t be overloaded with options. All Maxtop Quartz surfaces benefit from engineered enhancements, such as a patented polypropylene interior honeycomb core, which provides enhanced impact resistance, lightweight ergonomics and waterproof qualities. Providing all the beauty and strength of a solid quartz surface, without any of the drawbacks of traditional solid stone. Stephen concluded: “We’re delighted the new surfaces are finally available and have developed some striking point of sale to support the launch.” The company has also developed a limited-time offer for displaying retailers through its network of distributors throughout the UK and Ireland. The future of wood-burning - TODAY

There are significant benefits to using a highly efficient stove, which include:

The SIA (Stove Industry Alliance) recently used the services of a research company, Kiwa Gastec whose report shows that modern clean burning Ecodesign stoves, including those in the Charlton & Jenrick range, can reduce particulate emissions by up to 90% compared to an open fire, and 80-84% compared to an old stove. This finding is so important that SIA have begun an “Ecodesign Ready” labelling scheme verified by HETAS to promote stoves meeting the efficiency and emissions regulations early. The scheme is due for official launch in Parliament on 28th February. This is a very significant milestone for the stove industry and for the environment. The fact is that whilst old stoves might produce a useful amount of heat within the home, they are not combustion efficient, not by a long way, and are not anywhere near as kind on the environment as newly developed high efficiency clean burning stoves. At 15-20% efficiency open fires needlessly remove a huge amount of warm room air up the chimney from their open throat and at the same time don’t give the optimum burning conditions to minimise escape of smoke and unwanted residues into the environment. Charlton & Jenrick invested in the design and development of the Purevision range of Ecodesign ready stoves as long ago as 2013 to prepare for future tightening of

Mr Slim R32 models bring advanced benefits at the same price

options, with a capacity range from 3.5 to 14kW. 25 individual indoor units are also available as ceiling cassettes, ceiling concealed ducted, wall-mounted and ceiling suspended models. Mr Slim Power Inverters are also available in twin and triple multi-split configurations delivering complete flexibility for system designers. The Mr Slim R32 Power Inverter models bring together the latest technology, whilst maintaining the familiarity of the current Mr Slim Power Inverter range as Dickinson explains: “The size, look, feel and controls for the new R32 models remain the same as existing R410A Power Inverter models so that changing over to R32 will be as easy as possible for building owners. “We have recognised that familiarity is important for global brands, such as high street retailers that need to ensure consistency of design, whatever size of building they operate,” he adds, “this should make it easier for companies that want to embrace R32 to show how they are helping combat global warming.” Not only do the systems offer better performance at the same price, they also offer longer pipe runs with 100 metres available on the 10kW, 12.5kW and 14kW models – 25 metres longer than the equivalent R410A versions and the longest currently available on the market. This includes a 30-metre lift that is unique in the UK. The longer pipe runs are designed to make Mr Slim R32 even more flexible and allow systems to be installed where previous site restrictions would not allow. Mr Slim R32 Power Inverter models are available in twin and triple split configurations and offer full heating capacity down to -3ºC. The range also includes Mitsubishi Electric’s unique Replace technology which can utilise existing pipework, making it ideal for office and retail refurbishments.

Mitsubishi Electric has launched a new range of air conditioning units utilising the new refrigerant R32 which will be available at the same price as the equivalent R410A units. The R32 Mr Slim Power Inverter split type models are the second product range in the company’s UK line-up to utilise R32 refrigerant – which has a low global warming potential (GWP). “We have kept the price exactly the same as our current R410A Mr Slim Power Inverter line up as we see this eliminating a big hurdle in the adoption of this new refrigerant, which is an important change to help combat global warming,” explains Carl Dickinson on behalf of the company. “Anyone planning on using, designing or installing air conditioning in the coming

years will now need to take into account the GWP of the system to meet the requirements of the F-Gas Regulations,” adds Dickinson. In March 2014, the European Parliament passed the 2014 EU F-Gas Regulation legislation with the key objective of reducing F-Gas emissions by 79% between 2015 and 2030. The overall intention is to cut the availability of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with a high GWP. R32 has a GWP of 675 compared to R410A refrigerant which has a GWP of 2,088 and Dickinson sees this as an

important reason why the market is expected to move quickly to the new refrigerant: “Not only will this help businesses demonstrate what they are doing to help the environment, the use of R32 also allows the Mr Slim units to offer increased efficiency compared to equivalent R410A models.” Mitsubishi Electric is first to the UK market with such an expansive line-up and the new R32 Mr Slim Power Inverter models have been built specifically for the new refrigerant. The range includes ten outdoor units offering single-phase and 3-phase

“R32 units have already been available in Japan for over two years now and we have taken that knowledge and experience and refined it to develop this advanced lineup, which improves efficiency, increases pipe runs and adds other benefits too,” explains Dickinson. The new R32 Mr Slim line-up is available from July 2017 and further information is available on the dedicated website www.time forr32.co.uk/pr4, which also includes product information sheets, videos and infographics on the background to the introduction of R32 refrigerant and our products. www.timeforr32.co.uk/pr4 www.mclink.co.uk/1022-576 ENQUIRY-Card 576

Bona Titan – a new generation of powerful adhesives

Bona, the wood floor experts, has launched Bona Titan, a new supreme performance, silane- based adhesive for high value projects, very wide or oversized solid wood boards - or any installation where the quality of the bond has to be guaranteed.

Bona Titan contains Titanium Technology - a revolutionary new formula comprising quadruple crosslinking that delivers superior durability and an unbeatable initial bond speed - even under challenging subfloor conditions. Bona Titan can be specified with confidence to bond all types of wood flooring. Its superb shear strength makes installation easy and keeps even the largest, solid boards securely in place. If the subfloor is sound and dry, no primer is required. The hard, silane-based formula contains no ingredients that can migrate after curing, which eliminates all risk of discolouration at the joints. The smooth, thick consistency makes it easy to use and produces stable ribs, an extremely high initial grab and zero risk of hollow spots. The bond strength of Bona Titan will not diminish over time so the stability of the floor is guaranteed for the long term. Bona Titan meets ISO 17178 standards and, in line with Bona’s environmental strategy, is a safe, clean formulation which also carries EC1-R Plus, DIBt, Greenguard and A+ low emission certifications. Bona Titan is compatible with underfloor heating and can be used directly on metal or tiles. Floors bonded with Bona Titan can be sanded after just 12 hours. Further technical information is available at bona.com or from Bona’s technical department on 01908 525 161. www.mclink.co.uk/1022-578 ENQUIRY-Card 578

Dunlop GX-500 – Get groutstanding tiling with Dunlop! GX-500 is Dunlop’s most advanced tile grout yet and provides builders and contractors with an all-round grout in a wide colour choice. Suitable for wall AND floor tiling, it can be used for almost any situation and with most tile types including ceramic, porcelain, natural stone and mosaic tiles. Water and frost resistant, it is flexible and available in eight unique colours including Polar White, Jasmine Cream, Harvest Beige, Sahara Sand, Conker Brown, Mist Grey, Graphite Grey and Liquorice Black. The flexible nature of the grout means a reduced risk of cracking, leaving supersmooth but hard wearing finish without the patchiness or surface discolouration. It also means it can be used in complex installations, such as over underfloor heating and in swimming pools. Because of its unique formulation, it can be used from 1-15mm joint widths – meaning it can be used for almost any tiling design with large or small format tiles. Alongside GX-500 grouts, Dunlop has launched a range of colour-matched silicone sealants – FX-90. Ideal for

jointing tiled walls and floors in interior or exterior locations it is multi-purpose, hygienic and waterproof. Debi Boulton, sales and marketing manager said: “With more and more specialist tiling work being carried out by tradespeople, and a request for larger tiles, narrow tile joints and a greater variety of grout colours – we identified a need for an all-in-one wall and floor grout that can be used on large and small format ceramic, porcelain, natural stone and mosaics, joint widths from 115mm and in a number of different colours. “Many other grouts on the market can only be used for certain situations – such as wall tiling, or floor tiling, small joints or wide joints and the colourrange is often limited. “With the launch of GX-500, we are taking away the stress of trying to fulfil a client’s long-list of wishes and needs. And despite it being an all-round product, this doesn’t mean we’ve had to scrimp on quality!”

EGGER Protects builders from the weather for longer New research and rigorous testing of EGGER’s flagship flooring product, EGGER Protect, has shown that the structural board can remain exposed to the elements for 60 days. This is a substantial increase on the previously cited 42 days, is unrivalled in the industry, and gives UK house builders peace of mind when dealing with unforeseen delays. Alan White, Director of Sales for Building Products at EGGER UK, explained the significance of this new development: “As a leading provider of domestic and commercial structural flooring applications, we respond to customer feedback and continually seek to improve and develop our products. We know there are many reasons why the building process can be delayed, leaving floors exposed and at risk of becoming structurally unsound. “In response to this, I am delighted to announce that, in addition to the Lifetime Guarantee we offer on our Advanced Structural Flooring System, we also provide the only chipboard

flooring on the market that, once laid, can be exposed to the British weather for up to 60 days. No matter the reason for the delay on-site, whether it be material shortages or lack of skilled tradesmen, this extended protection period is significant for any builder.” EGGER Protect is manufactured from the company’s P5 flooring grade particleboard with a weather resistant surface layer applied to both sides. As well as the 60 day protection, the board has a hard-wearing, anti-slip surface, is quick to install, and can be used with underfloor heating systems and tiles. Time-saving features include a concrete-effect finish, which means no post-installation painting is required. EGGER Protect can be installed during light rain conditions and is easily cleaned in preparation for handover to the customer. CE and FSC certified, the boards are

EGGER Protect produced from sustainable raw materials on one of the most sophisticated production lines in Europe. Each board has a tongue and groove profile, cut with unique diamond-tipped tooling, creating stronger and consistently tighter fitting joints. To achieve optimal results, EGGER Joint & Joist D4 adhesive must be used. The correct application of this glue creates a fully sealed working deck, protection against moisture ingress and the wear and tear of heavy site traffic. No joint sealing tape is required. EGGER Protect is part of a portfolio of structural P5 grade flooring boards with enhanced moisture resistant properties, which also includes EGGER P5 and EGGER Peel Clean Xtra. These tongue and groove boards are part of the company’s innovative Advanced Structural Flooring System which is

specifically designed to save time, money and manpower. The tried and tested system combines three components: EGGER tongue and groove structural flooring boards, EGGER D4 Joint and Joist Adhesive and a simple six-step installation process. When these are all used in accordance with EGGER’s recommended fitting process, the installation is backed by the EGGER Lifetime Guarantee. VEKA reservist soldier celebrates Reserves Day with Certificate of Commendation

Mark Schofield, a VEKA employee who also serves in the Army Reserve has been commended for his Distinguished Service as part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.

The reserve chef was among a select group of 15 from a company of around 250 to receive the certificate from Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Royce. The award comes before Army Reserves Day (21st June 2017), which highlights and recognises the invaluable contribution made by reservists, and sees them wearing Armed Forces uniform at their ‘regular’ places of work. During Mark’s recent tour of Cyprus – his third – representatives of The VEKA UK Group joined other employers invited by the Army to learn about reservists’ military work and how it complements their ‘everyday’ roles. Operations Director Paul Armstrong attended the four-day trip for The VEKA UK Group, which has held ‘Investors in People’ status since 1994, and proudly supports its staff with training and other opportunities. The UK Army’s role as part of The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is Britain’s longest running overseas mission. Ownership of the island is disputed between the Turkish north and the Greek south, with the UN patrolling a Buffer Zone or ‘Green Line’ across the capital, Nicosia. The visitors followed a packed itinerary, including talks at the hotel and the UN base; training activities from the Joint Services Adventure Training scheme (a week-long course run in Cyprus for Army, Army Reserve, RAF and Navy service people); and tours around the UN-patrolled area. Paul commented: “The effects of the conflict on the island are clear, with crumbling buildings and abandoned vehicles, many peppered with bullet holes. Some buildings have been repurposed, such as The Ledra Palace; once a five-star hotel that hosted Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor but now a base for troops within the buffer zone. Others remain ‘time capsules’, such as Nicosia’s abandoned airport, or the deserted car showroom – still stocked with dust-covered 1970s Toyotas!” Mark has worked for both the Army Reserve and VEKA for around 23 years, now serving as a chef in The 4th Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment after 12 years as an infantryman. Paul continues: “The rapport that Mark has with his colleagues is great. He’s particularly valued as a chef – in fact, one soldier described food as ‘the morale of the troops and the most important thing, next to pay!’” Besides their peacekeeping duties in Cyprus, reservists pick up skills that benefit both their Army and civilian work. Operating in arduous conditions, thinking on their feet, taking on responsibility, and assessing risk are among the

challenges that reservists face, developing their confidence in the process. Austerity measures have seen regular Army numbers reduced from 104,000 to 82,000 in recent years, offset by an increase in reservist capability. It’s planned that there will be a total of 30,000 reservists by 2019 (currently there are around 24,000), with larger employers such as The VEKA UK Group needed to support their staff in taking up such roles, and offering jobs to retired service people. Paul added: “After gratefully being given the chance to

learn more about Mark’s military work, it’s clear to see why VEKA will long continue to support the Army in this way. It’s an invaluable service with benefits for all parties involved, and we’re proud to see Mark commended for his efforts.”
