Graduates switch to trades for degree of Job satisfaction Corporate downsizing and a desire for greater job satisfaction are leading to a rising number of graduates switching to careers as tradesmen and women, according to an annual industry survey. IronmongeryDirect invited 10,000 tradespeople to take part in the annual study and found a 31% increase in the numbers of graduates working across a range of trades such as builders, joiners and shop fitters. The trend suggests that high rates of unemployment and the wave of redundancies following the financial crash in 2008, have pushed more graduates into rethinking their future career options and picking up a trade with many entrepreneurial graduates opting for selfemployment. Researchers point out that

graduates may also be seeking a higher degree of job satisfaction. Tradespeople score the love for their job as an average of 8 out of 10 – with 69% scoring job satisfaction at 8 out of 10 or higher. This compares to the average score in the population as a whole of 6 out of 10 - with just 54% scoring job satisfaction as 8 or higher. Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said: “These results are indicative of the rising status of tradespeople within the UK. The stereotypical image of the White Van Man is dead and gone, with tradespeople increasingly viewed as highly professional, skilled entrepreneurs with many running their own successful businesses. “It’s not hard to understand

why therefore, with many graduates affected by the economic downturn of recent years and having to compromise on their original career choices, they are opting to take their future into their own hands and learn skills that will always be in demand.” The study also found that tradespeople are almost three times more likely to be their own boss and that

impressive new 82m² exhibition space, complete with extensive product displays and dedicated meeting and presentation areas. Speaking at the event, REHAU’s UK Chief Executive Martin Hitchin said: “It’s now estimated that around 80% of all building projects in the UK are influenced by an individual who is based in London, so our presence here has never been more important.” He continued: “The new REHAU Hub is designed to

demonstrate not only our abilities as a manufacturer of cutting edge products but also our strengths as a solutions provider and design consultant and, as such, it will benefit not only REHAU but all of our customers who work in the commercial sector.” The new REHAU Hub is a permanent display of REHAU’s range of energy efficient building products ranging from Passivhaus certified window and curtain walling systems to district heating and chilled ceiling solutions. It showcases the products for visitors to see and touch for

themselves, and also includes a screen animation illustrating how these products can be used in domestic and commercial applications. It provides a London base for its team of specialist commercial sales managers who support specification teams with product and planning advice, training and CPD seminars, and gives the many visitors to The Building Centre an insight into the scale and resources behind the familiar REHAU brand. UK has world’s most costly diesel New Aico 160e Series The Fuelcard People has pointed out The next step in alarm evolution that UK companies now pay more for diesel than they would anywhere else in the world. Steve Clarke, group marketing manager, cited the latest research by, published on June 22, 2015. He said: “It made headlines that the UK is back into the world ‘Top Ten’ for petrol prices, but nobody seems to have noticed the diesel chart. Of more than 170 countries surveyed, we have the world’s most expensive diesel.” The research, cited regularly by the world’s broadcast, print and online media, includes an explanation for internationally differing prices. Steve Clarke said: “There is no mystery to the UK’s embarrassing position. Each nation buys oil on the same global markets, but then imposes its own taxes. The price on our forecourts includes 59% for diesel, 61% for petrol. Having to pay the highest fuel duty in Europe is crippling our economy and hindering the recovery.” ENQUIRY-Card 101

Cavitrays Eliminate Chance DPC’s and cavity trays over lintels should rise a minimum of 150mm in the cavity according to Building Regulations, LABC and Premier Guarantee. NHBC allows 140mm conditional on at least 100mm of it rising through a defined clear cavity area. But several anomalies can arise where openings are 1200mm wide or less and lintels are low profile with 150mm bearings.

problem if the accompanying DPC/ tray only overhangs the lintel ends by a small amount (NHBC state not less than 25mm). In face brickwork the first perp joint available to receive the stopend can be 225mm away from the opening edge (a whole brick) unless the face brickwork breaks bond. A greater projection beyond the lintel end is therefore required. Similarly, the limited lintel height means any accompanying DPC/tray rising above it needs support to hold it up and prevent distortion, but is there a conveniently located bed joint in the inner skin at the right height to provide this? Using a preformed cavitray can overcome such shortfalls and provide benefits. The Type C cavitray is preformed, self supporting and tensioned to take up the

Damp Proofing & Porous Surface Treatments13 from using DPCs in exterior walls – free-standing garden, boundary and dwarf walls, for example – as the health and safety repercussions could be disastrous. “By actually adding strength, BricLoc represents the first, truly viable DPC solution for free-standing exterior walls. It makes it possible to damp proof such walls without endangering health and safety and could potentially save

the wall. BricLoc has no unsightly side effects and effectively safeguards against the moisture ingress that can lead to frost blight, efflorescence and moss growth. “There's been a great response to the product so far. The Brick Development Association loved the idea, giving us positive comment and encouragement before BricLoc even went into production, and we're currently

NEW BricLoc studded DPC strengthens the bond between courses BricLoc, an innovative new studded damp proof coursing product, is set to revolutionise damp proofing in exterior walls, with significant benefits for architects, specifiers, contractors, homeowners and more. Drawing on years of specialist brickwork experience, Lancashire's DPC Products Ltd. created BricLoc (patent pending) to address the multiple shortcomings of existing DPCs. It is UK-designed and manufactured and fully CE-certified. Designer and Co-Director, Daniel Cooper explains: “What

BricLoc offers that traditional DPCs can't match is its ability to resist 'slip' and 'twist' in walls, increasing strength and promoting safety – particularly in the crucial stage while the mortar is 'going off'. We achieved this with a unique studded profile, which – as the name suggests – 'locks' the bricks above and below, preventing one course from shearing from its neighbour. “The studs to BricLoc's lower surface displace the surrounding mortar, compacting it against the surface of the DPC. Similarly, the recesses above fill with mortar, 'keying' the adjacent

courses with one another. We gave the product to Lucideon (formerly CERAM) – independent testers of building products – who found the bond created was even stronger than that between brick and mortar alone! “Currently, the use of a DPC is a legal requirement only for walls in buildings. Traditional DPCs can compromise the bond between courses – particularly in low-loaded walls – potentially jeopardising their structural integrity and making them more likely to topple under force. That's why architects, specifiers and contractors often shy away

thousands in remedial costs, renovation and even legal bills! As such, we firmly believe the legal requirement for DPC use should now be extended to include all exterior walls. “Bricklayers will instantly feel at home with BricLoc. It aligns perfectly with three-hole and 'frogged' bricks, is easy to cut to length, overlap and form corner joints, and there's no need to waste time or money on training, specialist equipment or hazardous torch bonding. “Torch-bonded bitumen-based DPCs often 'leach out', jeopardising the aesthetic of

in talks with one of the UKs leading residential property developers with a view to specifying BricLoc DPC in all their new-build properties. “This product stands to have a really positive effect on the industry and we're excited to see what the future holds!” For more information and a video showing how BricLoc works, visit or search for 'BricLoc' on YouTube. Design-led Italian company U-Power is proud to announce the launch of its new, non-slip, sporty safety footwear range, Flat Out. Inspired by Italian rally driving wear, the passion of U-Power’s owner, this unbelievably comfortable new collection holds nothing back. Flat Out footwear comes in a variety of attractive colours and styles, features the best quality materials and an array of the most up-do-date safety technologies on the market. U-Power’s desirable Flat Out footwear boasts an outstanding slip resistance of 0,71, way above the European Standard of 0,32, thanks to its newly-conceived PU/PUTR sole, and is therefore ideal for use in construction, or other environments where there is a risk of slipping.

Makita celebrates its centenary in 2015 and to mark this industrial milestone an additional swathe of high performance accessories has been added to this already comprehensive range. Based on the thesis that there is no point in investing in a high quality tool and then buying the cheapest available drill bit or blade, the Makita accessory products are paired with the appropriate machines to deliver the maximum performance in operation. Amongst the new range of products are thin cut-off wheels that are ideally suited to use with cordless tools but can equally be used with mains grinders to cut steel and stainless steel. These 0.8mm fast-cutting wheels are available in 115mm and 125mm diameter and deliver a fine cut that leaves fewer burrs on the material edges and less swarf residue from the cutting action. Dickies are pleased to announce a Do you suffer from ‘charge anxiety’? Stihl & CS Skills awards join forces Loss of productivity through flat power STIHL GB, Skanska and Cskills Awards, new Mobile Showroom As Dickies attend well over 200 events every year and especially during the busy summer and autumn period this will give us greater coverage across the country to help us support our customers at their Trade and Open Days or larger events that they may be attending such as County shows, or other specific events usually open to the general public. Dickies now attend all the British Super Bike rounds in the UK so traveling around the country puts an enormous strain on allowing coverage for all the other events so an extra vehicle will definitely help to keep customers happy. The new vehicle is a Vauxhall Movano with a bespoke body suitably equipped with pull out sides and a pull up panel to enlarge its sales and exhibition area in front of the Mobile Showroom. It comes equipped with specialist garment hanging rails, footwear display unit, stock cupboards, sunken LED lighting, counter and a changing room with a mirror, in fact everything needed to attend a busy event. tool batteries could be a thing of the past, thanks to new thinking from Bosch Professional Powertools. With its ‘Wireless Charging System’, Bosch has become the first supplier in the world to harness the advantages of inductive energy transfer to keep cordless tools power-ready. In essence, this new approach is similar in principle to that of a contactless toothbrush charging station. Aimed initially at professionals operating in fixed locations, the idea is that whenever the tool is not being used it should be placed on the charging unit in the user’s work station. Tools can be left on the charger indefinitely or placed there for just a few minutes at a time between jobs. While the system’s main benefit is that jobs are never interrupted or delayed by lack of charge or, worse still, the search for a charged-up replacement battery, the profitability advantage doesn’t end there. the awarding organistion of CITB, held an event last month in light of their collaboration that will help to ensure the construction industry is trained and qualified following an increase in petrol cut-off saw injuries. The event aimed to raise awareness for the Cskills Awards training qualification for cut-off saw users and encourage organisations to register to upskill their employees. It was also announced that the course now includes abrasive wheel training, so delegates no longer need to attend two separate courses to gain certification. Attended by more than 30 industry representatives including Hire Association Europe (HAE) and Redrow Homes, the event was hailed a success and a step in the right direction for the industry by event-goers. Altitude Height Safety Many professions, work environments and tasks involve activity above or even below ground level, meaning workers are exposed to the risk of falling a distance liable to cause injury – or even death. As well as a moral obligation to ensure those workers’ safety, employers must comply with myriad legal duties with regard to work at height. Training is a crucial part of compliance, as employers must understand how to plan and manage work at height safely so that workers can carry it out without incurring harm to themselves, or causing it to others. Altitude™ Height Safety – a brand new company within the JSP Group – is dedicated to providing quality height safety and rescue training for all industry sectors. The company recently launched an initial programme of five courses covering the main elements of working at height for employers and their workers.

safest and most suitable work methods and equipment via risk assessment and the hierarchy of controls. •Personal fall protection equipment: selection, use and maintenance – this half-day, classroom-based course covers selection, safe use and appropriate

inspection and maintenance regimes for a range of fall-protection equipment. Correct fitting and adjustment of safety harnesses and pre-use checking of equipment are also addressed. •Inspection of personal fall protection equipment – a full day course

The laser lines can be pivoted to a target position without losing the position of the plumb-line dot, making this clever multi-line laser the ideal tool for positioning partition walls with U-profiles, with the laser able to be placed flat against a surface and the height easily adjusted. For quick and accurate plumb bobbing, the layout can be transferred from the floor to the ceiling, with tradesmen able to work directly on the laser lines, which are very bright, narrow and clean. •Planning and managing work at height – this full-day course is suitable for those who plan, manage or supervise work-at-height activity and covers hazard identification, risk assessment, accident reporting, inspection and maintenance regimes and planning for rescue. •Rescue from height – it is imperative that employers and sites have plans in place to deal with emergencies at height, so this full-day, practical course gives delegates the knowledge and skills to rescue someone who, in the event of a fall, is incapacitated, suspended, or in a position requiring emergency selfevacuation. All courses can be held on the client’s site, so there are no travel and accommodation costs for delegates, and time off work is kept to a minimum. Delegates are trained in the environment in which they work, in small groups of six or 12, by experienced JSP tutors. To find out more, or to book a course, or call 01993 824000. ENQUIRY-Card 524

Innovation from Brickworker is a cut above

Making a straight cut through stone floor tiles, flag stones and paving slabs just got a lot simpler, thanks to the Slab Cutting Guide, a simple yet clever and effective idea from Brickworker, available in the UK through Hyde. This patented, innovative device locks simply and quickly on to the slab or tile, enabling a safe and accurate straight cut to be achieved, when using either a 12” or 14” disc cutter. Made from sturdy stainless steel, the Slab Cutting Guide from Brickworker helps

tradesmen work more efficiently, accurately and safely whether cutting paving slabs or natural stone. The Slab Cutting Guide puts paid to having to mark out lines before cutting freehand. With many tradesmen opting to break HSE guidelines in order to cut dry, rather than risking water from a wet cut mixing with dust and making the marking virtually impossible to see, the Slab Cutting Guide offers a simple, safe alternative that won’t slow the job down. Made in the UK, the Slab Cutting Guide from Brickworker can be used for cutting slabs between 20mm and 60mm in thickness and from 210mm to 910mm long.

‘Explaining the Security Standards’ by Wojciech Brozyna - MD Aluprof UK

Crime is on the decrease. The latest figures from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) showed that there were an estimated 6.9 million incidents of crime against households and resident adults in England and Wales in 2014. This is a 7% decrease compared with the previous year’s survey, and the lowest estimate since the CSEW began in 1981. The results are certainly due in part to better policing and better crime intelligence within the police force, but as important, it is the hardware we specify and how it is integrated with our window and door products that make a really big difference. Gone are the days when a simple catch on our patio doors was deemed sufficient when actually a garden spade was all that was necessary to lift out the sliding panel. Today we view multipoint locks and 5 lever security cylinders as commonplace. So the standards over the years have evolved, but what security standards are relevant today? Most of us will know of ‘PAS 24’ or ‘Secured by Design’ (SBD), but there are further standards which may become relevant when aspects of security are discussed with clients. PAS 24: 2012 ‘Enhanced security performance requirements for doorsets and windows in the UK. External doorsets and windows intended to offer a level of security suitable for dwellings and other buildings exposed to comparable risk’. When AD Q takes effect on 1 October 2015 in England, all easily accessible residential doors and windows in new builds must be made here to a design that has been shown by test to meet the security requirements of PAS 24 (or the other standards listed in AD Q and deemed acceptable). For compliance with AD Q sample doorsets, for example, should be supplied to (ideally) a UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredited test house where the PAS 24-specified tests are applied to the doorsets. The PAS 24 certificate for the complete assembly, including profiles and hardware, should be available prior to purchase. A commercial scheme that focuses on the design and security of buildings is ‘Secured by Design’, an ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers)

initiative. Windows and doorsets must be shown to meet the requirements of PAS 24 or equivalent standards. SBD just operates a licensing scheme and includes both residential new build and refurbishment projects. During the testing to relevant standards, hardware and potential access points on the window and doorsets are tested. Tests are designed to replicate intruder attack on complete windows and doorsets rather than test individual hardware components. Manufacturers of products that meet the SBD scheme requirements have to be registered with the scheme and each product needs to be tested using the product profile, hardware configuration and maximum sizes. Tests must be undertaken every year by a member organisation, normally a fabricator, to ensure compliance and to maintain their license. Contractors installing SBD products into any development must confirm that they are sourcing products from an SBD licenced fabricator/installer in order for the completed project to benefit from the SBD scheme. Other schemes for enhanced security window and doorset products are available, for example Q-Mark, Certisecure and Kitemark, which certify compliance with PAS 24 or with the alternative standards listed in AD Q. The schemes typically cover factory production control, documentation and test/assessment evidence, with resultant certification specific to clearly defined materials and components. Other security standards include the ‘Red Book’ LPS1175 and BS EN 1627. The LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) have been running the LPS1175

standard for some time and it is now in its 7th issue. BS EN 1627:2011 ‘Pedestrian doorsets, windows, curtain walling, grilles and shutters. Burglar resistance. Requirements and classification’ is a European standard which follows a similar methodology. Both standards utilise a completed product placed in a test rig in a controlled environment. The potential ‘burglar’ is then offered different levels of toolsets, varying from the likes of the opportunists’ screwdrivers and chisels, to the professionals’ electric power tools to gain entry over a given time frame. Many systems companies in the UK work to the PAS 24, LPS and Certisecure STS standards whilst the European systems companies work to EN 1627 as this applies across Europe. Whilst the above standards are similar there are differences in the approaches taken and the levels of passes which make comparison very difficult between EN 1627 and the PAS 24 standard in particular. Importantly the resistance these products offer is down to their certification and what is expected from clients’ insurers. Often vulnerable window and door openings are protected by other means, such as grilles and shutters and these items can be built into the products being installed. A further issue to take into consideration is the ‘Detection’ and ‘Response’ time to a potential break in. Often seen as a triangle with the third side ’Delay’, this methodology offers a complete security solution and one that is used on any vulnerable door, window or facade. Moreover this method of security can easily be tested to ensure that security measures are constantly on alert and are sufficient for the premises. The specification choices are crucial to ensuring the best product to suit the

project, at the same time looking at alternatives which offer an efficient and economical solution, can seem to be a daunting task. At Aluprof we have a dedicated team of technical trusted advisors who can guide the specifier to the right product for any project, from home improvement through to government security requirements. All our systems are tested to the highest security levels and UK certification is available on all our products. Security against intrusion is just one security aspect in a range of considerations for the specifier. The Aluprof product range includes fire resistant doors, screens and curtain walls which can achieve ratings up to EI120 rating. The products have been independently tested at ‘Certifire’ in Warrington. Frames are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies across the UK. Aluminium frames using a combination of machined plasterboard slips, ceramic cores, stainless steel clips and intumescent strips, ratings can be adjusted to suit any application. With our UK head office and large distribution centre in Altrincham, Cheshire, Aluprof systems increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets Aluprof’s exacting standards. AluK BSF70 HD:

A heavyweight champion in the folding door market In response to market demands, AluK (GB) has introduced into its product range the new BSF70 HD aluminium folding door system, providing its customers with a unique offering that will help to expand their business opportunities whilst providing end users with a greater choice of heavier panels without any loss in performance. The superior new BSF70 HD features a heavy duty roller and top guide to accommodate heavier glass load to an

impressive 130kg per panel. The increase in panel weight means that fabricators will now be able to offer their customers a door system which can carry heavier double or triple glazed panels, improving the thermal efficiency and acoustic insulation of their homes. To reliably accommodate the heavier panels, the innovative BSF70 HD comes with a built-in alignment pin within the hinge assembly to provide accurate and permanent panel positioning. This added feature strengthens the panel at each

roller, making the installer’s job trouble free and provides accurate permanent positioning. Furthermore, the BSF70 HD has an improved bottom hinge carrier design incorporating stainless steel rollers with high performance needle bearings, offering the end user safe, quiet and effortless operation. The more expansive glazing options array allow AluK’s fabricators and installers to offer their customers the largest possible panels to take advantage of increased daylight and

Approved Installer Scheme gets An open & shut case for in Situ Testing NorDan Scandic announced Door hardware specialist HOPPE UK is NorDan, the biggest European producer thumbs up all round In a little under a year since it was introduced, The VEKA UK Group's Approved Installer Scheme has met with unprecedented success, already welcoming around 400 businesses to date. Its parent company has been inundated with positive testimonials, praising what Approved Installers, Fabricators and Suppliers have found to be the Scheme's main benefits. Instantly meeting with widespread interest at its 2014 FIT Show launch, the Approved Installer Scheme offers a package of support designed to promote and benefit businesses through their commitment to supplying high quality products from The VEKA UK Group – the industry's leading manufacturer of PVCU window and door systems. urging ironmongers, contractors and architects to fully consider the real-life door conditions before specifying door closers. HOPPE UK’s Jason Tonks explains: There are many closers on the market which have been successfully tested to BS 8300 with full third party accreditation but which, when fitted in a real life application, simply do not work effectively. These tests are carried out in controlled “laboratory” conditions with no seals, steady air pressure, appropriate hinges etc. So that when it is fitted on a real door, its performance may not truly reflect the test evidence. AS well as these factors, there are other factors on site which can affect the operation of a door not least of which is fitting, not to mention the weight and, critically, the width of the door. A narrow flat entrance door might prove to be almost impossible to open with the wrong closer, especially for older and disabled users. ENQUIRY-Card 113

NorDan Scandic will take the high quality timber and alu clad timber window and door products to the consumer market. The outstanding system can be configured to fit a variety of styles and designs including open-in and open-out options with panels stacked inside or outside, to the left or right or split on both sides. Graham Hurrell, Commercial Director, AluK comments: “Having reviewed products available on the market, we are pleased to provide our partners with the unique offering of the new BSF70 HD aluminium folding door system. Combining the highest standards in performance with innovative design features, it gives fabricators the chance to offer their customers a unique and market leading product.” The new BSF70 HD has been rigorously tested, achieving over 25,000 cycles with each panel weighing 130 kilos. Guardian Roof Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary with 20% Turnover Increase Predicted The business behind the UK’s largest network of solid roof system installers has celebrated it’s 10th year of trading. In just 10 years, Staffordshire-based Guardian Roof, and it’s network of fabricators plus Team Guardian installers has sold over 15,000 roofs throughout the UK. And early indications suggest that the milestone year will make financial history too, with the annual turnover on course to increase by around 20%. For Guardian Joe Kearney said, “When we launched Guardian back in 2005 we became the UK’s first roof manufacturing company to make a

simple promise: that we’d never fabricate a roof ourselves. And we’ve been true to our word. “We have built partnerships with some of the UK’s finest fabricators. And their support, belief in the unique business model and hard work is now paying off in massive success for the brand. “We are hugely grateful to each and every one of our skilled fabricators and our incredible network of skilled Team Guardian Installers. We thank them for their efforts, belief and trust in the UK’s market-leading solid lightweight warm roof solution.” “We gave our word in 2005 on the way the business model would work for ENQUIRY-Card 542

everyone - and that we have kept to those principles right from day one. Now everyone involved is reaping the rewards. But this is only just the beginning. Our recruitment of installers continues. And we are also developing new and more exciting products for our fabricators to exclusively supply.” In September last year Guardian Roof launched a new membership drive targeting a total of 400 accredited installers by 2016. And earlier this year Guardian introduced new sales software for members of its Team Guardian Registered Installer Scheme. The new software has improved Team Guardian installers’ efficiency and conversion

rates; plus help increase capacity for Team Guardian fabricators. Developed exclusively for Guardian Roof by RoofWright, the software can produce an infinite number of designs using over 200 unique templates and five Metro tile designs. And the software offers massive time savings; allows for instant precise pricing of jobs; and, features structural checks to guarantee the integrity of each job. Further process time savings are predicted to transform fabrication capacity. More information about Team Guardian is available by calling 0800 0665832 or visiting /installerregistration/

Britain’s most famous fire – which engulfed the capital in 1666 – reportedly started in a bakers shop in Pudding Lane and resulted in the first regulations on building construction to try and prevent future catastrophes. By coincidence the selection of “Smoke and Heat Exhaust Vent Systems” or smoke vents offered by Jet Cox Limited extends to 13 sizes all of which are fully compliant with the latest CE EN 1 2102-2 Certification. In fact the Jet Cox FireJet 165 24V/48V has been developed to provide automatic smoke extract in the event of any type of conflagration and thereby create a smoke free layer above the floor by removing both smoke particle and any potentially life threatening combustion gases. The FireJet 165 models can be activated by a dedicated smoke alarm or a remote third party fire detection system and are fully compatible with any modern building management system.

In addition to stocking thousands of manufacturer’s products, a reputable supplier will offer own label products that are pricecompetitive and quality assured. Sarah McCartney, Marketing Manager at SIG Building Plastics explains: “We want contractors to understand the benefits of choosing a specialist supplier, such as SIG Roofline. Sandtoft introduces new VPM Classic with integral sealing tapes. Following the recent changes to the British Standard for slating and tiling: BS 5534 Sandtoft, the roof brand of leading supplier of wall, roof and landscaping innovations, Wienerberger, has added a new version of its VPM Classic now with integral sealing tapes. Oakland projects launches new age roofing technology Traditional flat roofs have long been the bane of the building industry. They are slow to install requiring three layers of roofing felt with each having to be sealed and finished with messy hot tar. The finished roof is extremely heavy, adding deadweight to the roofing timbers causing dips in the ply or chipboard which causes ponding after rain adding more weight and possible damage. So no wonder a felt roof can leak after just a few years. But now bespoke building and refurbishment company, Oakland Projects, has introduced a new concept in flat roofing. Working with manufacturers and trusted clients the company has developed the most modern approach to the problem, while adding a little light to

the subject. Paul Sundborg, Operations Director of Oakland Projects, explained. “We have been installing super light yet extremely strong fibreglass flat roof structures that are so reliable and leak free that we can also fit them with attractive skylights providing an extra ambience to an otherwise plain roof setting. “Fibreglass roofs can be quickly and cleanly installed by our experienced fitters in much less time than traditional but old fashioned felters. But even more important is the load bearing weight. Where a felted roof area would have a load weight of say 1.5 tons the equivalent weight of a 3mm fibreglass roof installed by our roofers is just 80kg,

(176lb). These roofs have been tried and tested by us. We believe they are the modern way forward in flat roofing design and technology,” he added. Fibreglass roofs can be fitted with frameless skylights to create a fresh, light feel to any area. Lightweight powder coated aluminium roof lanterns use the latest silicone bonding techniques, as well as rapid fitting, with sizes up to 4m by 2m being available. The glazing is self clean with a low U value (1) and a 20 year non leak warranty. Tried and proved by Oakland Projects the skylights offer minimum joints and bars with a maximum glazed area. With over 25 years’ practical experience, covering all market sectors, Oakland

Projects has the benefit of a nationwide labour force. The company specialises in luxury construction, fit-outs, upgrades, extensions and refurbishment programmes with a realistic work schedule for all clients. Oakland Projects recently launched its new website which showcases the company’s luxury building company’s impressive range of services, including bespoke shop fitting contracts. Coxdome Trade range sheds new light on Technology at Essex School

. View our publication online at . July 2015 .

A six week contract carried out by a building company experienced in roofing work, comprised of a series of rooflights on an East London school upgraded to insulated, twin-skin units from the Jet Cox Coxdome Trade Range: offering improved natural daylighting as well as enhancing the all-round energy and weather performance. The work, at the All Saints Catholic School in Dagenham, was carried out by Forest Gate Construction earlier this year without any inconvenience to the

school’s staff or pupils. Although the flat and barrel vaulted roof areas were in a generally good state of repair, the estates’ department responsible for the buildings’ upkeep took the decision to replace the existing rooflights over the computer suite and design & technology teaching space. This was due to the fact the existing units offered little insulation value and were coming to the end of their working life. A total of 38 of the 600mm x 600mm

Coxdome Trade Range Rooflights, along with 300 mm high insulated upstands. The double-skin domes feature tough polycarbonate glazing which will resist physical damage as well as extremes of weather. The rooflights feature trickle ventilation on two sides to help maintain a healthy indoor atmosphere; though they are hinged for manual operation if increased airflow is required during spells of unusually hot weather. Forest Gate Construction’s experienced operatives carried out the switchover to the Coxdome Trade Range units in small groups, sealing the installation using small sections of high performance felt, together with fluid applied sealants for detail areas. The entire roofscape was left looking clean and tidy while the smart new polycarbonate roof domes offer a unified and modern appearance. A spokesperson for Jet Cox commented: “The All Hallows project was typical of our education and many municipal contracts – where our Coxdome Trade Range Rooflights are regularly specified because of their ready availability in standard sizes and very good value for money. The new rooflights offer much improved light transmission for these teaching spaces and will also contribute to reduced heating costs long term. ENQUIRY-Card 555

Lanes Group drainage surveys support spine road development

Lanes Group has been commissioned to clean and survey the drainage system for a new spine road being built to join hundred homes and the local communities together on the site of a former steelworks. The road is being built by civil engineering contractor McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd at the former Brymbo steelworks site in Wrexham, north Wales. Local people had been very keen for the road scheme to go ahead, as it was seen to be vital to attract new business to the area - and allow the potential development of a school for the community. Telford-based McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd commissioned Lanes Group to clean the road's new drainage system and carry out detailed CCTV drainage surveys. Ian Clapham, area development manager for the Lanes Chester depot, which carried out the work, said: "It is an important step in the construction and asset handover process to clean and survey the full drainage systems. Hauraton channels used as perimeter drainage at Brooke Church of England School Located in Brooke village about six miles South of Norwich, The Brooke Church of England Primary School is a brick building surrounded by an asphalted playground which tended to flood when there was heavy rain. As part of a number of measures designed to reduce future flood risk it was decided that the existing drainage needed to be upgraded. The Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC® C250, HEELSAFE 9mm slot gratings was specified by NPS Group of Norwich, and used to provide perimeter drainage right around the school building. This continues 104 metre channel run not only drained the asphalt playground it prevented standing water reaching the walls and acted as a drain for roof downpipes. The FIBRETEC® grating design helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating and important consideration for the Brooke project. The RECYFIX® channel component is made from 100% recycled PE-PP. The channel for the Brooke project has an intake cross section of 92 cm2. ENQUIRY-Card 562

Marley’s HDPE range expand further

Marley Plumbing and Drainage has announced an extension to its HDPE Drainage system, offering specifiers and contractors more choice. Responding to the need for easier access on sites that are tight for space, a new 3m pipe in 110mm size has been

introduced to the range. This addition is extremely light to maneuver and install, as well as being easier to transport, particularly on smaller vehicles. Another new addition is a 56mm boss adaptor, available in 32mm and 40mm sizes. Using the new boss adaptor with 56mm HDPE fittings

provides freedom for the installer or designer to connect to a variety of other materials such as PVCu, PVCc or ABS. Marley’s HDPE Drainage system has proved to be extremely popular as a highly credible alternative to cast iron and the range already includes an extensive package of pipe,

bends, electrofusion couplers, branches, branch balls and access pipes. To ensure continued demand is met across the board, there is now an even greater volume of stock available in all core pipe sizes - from 56mm to 315mm. The high-density polyethylene system was the first to achieve

Kitemark certification to BS EN 1519. It is manufactured to meet high standards of durability and reliability, and is therefore particularly suited for commercial applications or where a product with high impact or abrasion resistance is required, such as hospitals, hotels, schools, as well as residential buildings. HDPE will also cope with temperature variations of -40°C to 100°C making it ideal for external as well as internal installations. The combination of the excellent material properties of HDPE with homogenous welded joints provides greater installation flexibility with a wide range of jointing options. The various connection methods include electrofusion, butt welding and push fit expansion sockets depending upon the particular project requirements. This ensures a quick, clean, reliable and cost effective installation compared to cast iron in particular. Furthermore, the lightweight construction of the HDPE system results in additional cost savings in transport and handling. ENQUIRY-Card 563

More than 3,300metres of Terrain db12 engineered acoustic piping were specified by Dornan Engineering for work on an extensive student accommodation project at in Islington, close to City University’s Northampton Square site. The new 1.5 acre Pure City site now provides accommodation for 805 students across two blocks, as well as a separate sports hall and teaching accommodation. Terrain db12 in 160mm, 110mm and Page 175mm pipe profiles, along

with thousands of associated fittings, were supplied by Polypipe as part of the project. Terrain Acoustic dB12 is an easy to install, triple layer pipe system. With specially developed co-polymer polypropylene layers and acoustically engineered fittings that effectively dampen both airborne noise and sound transmitted, making it ideal for large, multioccupancy buildings such as student accommodation. Tania Peck, UK Sales Director for Polypipe Terrain, comments: “Our Acoustic db12 system was specifically developed for use in projects such as this, and we’re certain that the University will notice a real difference in noise levels. We were delighted to be

working with Dornan on this large scale project having worked with them many times before.” Daniel Shanley, Project Manager at Dornan Engineering, said: “The benefits of db12 made it a clear winner over cast iron and traditional PVC alternatives for this project. We were also impressed by Polypipe’s ability to supply its fittings in such large numbers from their manufacturing facilities. Features such as these all go towards ensuring a smooth installation which meets our client’s required timescales.” The development welcomed its first intake of students for the 2015/16 academic year. Rinnai + Renewables = boosted DHW efficiency & legionella compliance According to Tony Gittings - Managing Director of Rinnai UK - renewables technology paired with a continuous flow hot water heating unit can affect major efficiencies in domestic hot water provision.

. View our publication online at . July 2015 .

We need to find ways of using current renewables technology, be it solar thermal, solar PV or heat pump technology, in a practical manner maximised by traditional fuel sources. One of the most ecological and economical methods is to design a system with primary renewable sources and supported by secondary sources such as continuous flow hot water heating. There has been pioneering products in this category - this includes solar thermal store of hot water and both flat plate and evacuated tube collectors, each with specific benefits to suit the differing design aspects and building envelope needs. Either option will provide years of low-maintenance, low-cost energy for heating water during the summer months – and beyond.

Water heated by the solar panels is stored and technologically this is unlikely to come up to a workable temperature all year round, so the boosting of the pre-heated water to the required temperature by a secondary heat source will be a requirement. With this system it will guarantee maximum solar gain whilst optimizing gas input. In this scenario a continuous flow water heater can be utilised as the secondary heat source to give the solar heated water the required boost. These are hot water heating products which are intelligent, fully modulating units, giving an output range from 56kW down to 2.27kW, and only use as much gas as is needed to bring the required volume of water to temperature. For example, if the solar panel array can only achieve a temperature of 40°C within the stored water instead of the required 60°C, and there is a demand on the system of 15 litres a minute, the fully modulating intelligent Rinnai unit will increase the temperature by the required 20°C (±1°C) whilst only using the required 21kW. If the demand drops to say 5l/min the heater will modulate down accordingly to an output

7kW. As can be seen a Rinnai unit used as a gas booster for solar systems will not only maximize solar gain, it will only use the correct amount of energy for the particular demand at the time. The rest of the time the unit is inactive. It is this, the booster, that ensures neverending hot water – no matter the demand so people can shower or bath any time of the day or night or whatever the weather conditions. Fossil fuel is only used when the renewable thermal energy store is below its set-point, thus reducing the dependency on fossil fuel and reducing CO2 emissions. This system is a blueprint for maximizing renewables gain. If you want to make it even more so, opt for one of Rinnai’s condensing water heaters and push the efficiencies envelope even further. Another technological advantage in using a continuous flow water heat as a booster is that you can wipe out any worries about legionella being a problem with stored water.ns are available. customers’ wish list and if you can find simple and inexpensive ways of reducing their bills, there are good opportunities to win some additional business with every job you do. The simple plug-in timer adapters are still sold in their thousands for DIY use, but professional installers can go a lot further with smarter, hard-wired devices which can be set with switching programmes as simple or as complicated as you need. Its horses for courses, so it’s worth spending a bit of time looking through the catalogue or, in the case of Timeguard, having a look at the boxes because the packaging tells you everything you need to know at a glance, in words and pictures. With heating control, the key to comfort is to maintain room temperatures within a 0.5ºC of the desired temperature, a 'comfort window' within which people don't notice a variation in temperature and feel the need to start ‘fiddling’ with the controls.

Leading heating equipment manufacturer Inta has introduced its second-generation intaKlean magnetic filter.Designed to combat contamination problems caused by rogue particles in fluid-based heating systems, the intaKlean 2 is the first of its kind to feature a double gauze filter, which actively captures and keeps hold of nonferrous debris, as well as eliminating trapped air. As fluid circulates around the filter body, non-ferrous foreign matter is caught and retained in the gauze, while the remaining ferrous debris is drawn to the centre of the filter and captured by the powerful neodymium magnet. The intaKlean 2’s full bore butterfly valves allow for convenient in-line installation without restricting water flow, and the magnet can be removed while the system is live for effortless cleaning.

The UK’s leading chimney manufacturer Schiedel has completed their first job with Cilantro Engineering, successfully completing a problematic brief. St John Bosco College in Wandsworth appointed Schiedel to supply, deliver and install 2No 200mmID flues connecting from the Potterton boiler modules to a single 250mmID ICS Plus header system via a 45 entry. The header then ran horizontally 1.7 metres to the riser zone before rising vertically straight for 21m to an open meshed termination. The contract was completed within a deadline of 8 weeks, including 2 weeks for installation. For a project such as this, the timing was very tight with engineers working weekends in order to meet the deadline set by the client.

Heating controls specialist Drayton has granted your wishes by launching its most intelligent range of products to date – miGenie. The fantastic new collection of internet connected heating control packs – known as miGenie Wishes - add a touch of magic to your life by making smart technology simple. The miGenie Wishes feature heating controls similar to the leading MiTime and MiStat range. However, miGenie devices utilise smart technology, enabled by an intuitive app that users download onto an iOS or Android smartphone, tablet or Apple Watch. This allows homeowners to regulate their heating and hot water from anywhere, at any time, using the app. Products contained within the miGenie Wishes are prebound and boast a standard backplate, meaning they are easy to retrofit and can be installed straight from the box in as little as ten minutes. Johnson & Starley's WarmCair warm air heating, Aquastar hot water storage and Home 'n Dry ventilation technology have been combined to maximum effect in a spectacularly renovated historic apartment in Penarth. Brian and Marilyn Fisher selected Johnson & Starley products on professional recommendation and are delighted with the results. Albert Road Wesleyan Methodist Church, Penarth, was built in 1907 and its schoolroom was destroyed by bombing in World War Two. The church was later converted into a multi-purpose building, still including a place of worship, but with most of it given over to local community services. Since being used as a community centre it had fallen into disrepair and in 2012 it was converted into eight luxury apartments, including two spacious duplexes. They were all designed to utilise as

effectively as possible all the available space afforded by the original large church with its vaulted ceiling. Renovation features include attic style storage space and glass walled decks for split level loft style accommodation, whilst much of the original church's heritage, original design and architectural features have also been retained. These include the original rafters and coving, along with the bell tower – now a wine cellar with roof top terrace. Brian and Marilyn Fisher's open plan apartment features living room, kitchen and two bedrooms on an upper level of the renovated church with a dressing room and airing cupboard - later transformed to house the new Johnson & Starley Warmcair heater and Aquastar water storage cylinder - leading off a mezzanine floor. Originally, electric underfloor heating had been installed to heat the apartment, but it had soon become apparent that this was inadequate to provide sufficient heating for the living space with its very high ceilings.

Fuel bills were ranging from £600-£700 a month, yet even with the addition of portable calor gas and electric fan heaters, the desired warmth levels were still not being achieved.

ceilings and a delightful internal décor. This needed to be considered carefully when designing the installation of the required ductwork to distribute warmed air in the most effective way.”

Looking for an alternative more effective and more energy efficient approach, a British Gas engineer suggested to the Fishers that a Johnson & Starley warm air heating system with provision of domestic hot water could prove a solution. Following a site visit and professional advice from Independent Heating System Designer Barry Williamson, a specification for a heating system, including detailed heat loss calculations, was drawn up. The solution was based on the installation of a Johnson & Starley WarmCair C20DW high efficiency combined warm air condensing heater with domestic hot water.

Although the underfloor heating has been retained, it is no longer required. Only the fully Building Regulations Part L compliant, the WarmCair C20DW is now used. It has the added advantage of domestic hot water provision rather than having to rely upon a standard tank with an immersion heater. With a thermal efficiency up to 98% and its 20kW output, the WarmCair C20DW is ideal for the size of the apartment and fulfils all of Mr & Mrs Fisher's requirements.

Barry comments: “The apartment presented some challenges in terms of designing and installing a warm air heating system that could do the job. It's an unusually shaped apartment with high

warm air heating there is no heat loss compared with that which is encountered when hot water is circulated through radiators to heat the house,” says Barry Williamson. A 180 litre Aquastar hot water storage cylinder has been installed. It is made from highgrade stainless steel and retains heat using a 50mm layer of insulation. The capacity is more than enough to store the hot water generated by the WarmCair and required by the Fishers. It also features a 3kW backup immersion heater. The complete installation was undertaken by Robin Hefter of Shackleton Wintle and it took 10 working days to complete due to the scale and challenge of the project. This included drilling the solid three feet thick church walls. Said Robin Heffter Managing Director of Shackleton-Wintle “It was an interesting job with many technical challenges, but the results made everything worthwhile. Mr & Mrs Fisher were for the first time in 4 years warm this winter and are extremely happy with their warm and comfortable fast acting heating system.” r radiators to spoil the look of our lovely apartment. “

For extra energy efficiency it is fully modulating and includes a condensate pump as standard as well as the Cleanflow electronic air filtration option. “The WarmCair is a new generation of warm air heating, ideal for this type of heritage project. It performs at least as well as a modern gas fired wet heating system, but without the unsightly clutter of ENQUIRY-Card 579 radiators. Furthermore with

Rinnai also provides a range of solar hot water systems that boast market-leading efficiencies. Rinnai renewables-ready heavy duty condensing units are engineered specifically to guarantee the highest efficiencies and therefore the lowest running costs of any commercial water heater. the hydraulics and the motor compared to the previous pump, optimising the partial load range by automatic pump performance control. This results in drastically reduced power consumption. Further reductions to the Torrent’s power consumption have been achieved thanks to the introduction of new flow sensor technology. This dramatically improves the hot water response times to the taps, reducing by up to 75 per cent, and overcomes the need to keep the plate heat exchanger heated on a ‘warm cycle’. The plate heat exchanger is now heated only when there is hot water demand, keeping the heat in the store for as long as possible for optimum performance. In addition to being open vented, and therefore an inherently safe system, the Torrent Eco range of thermal stores has been engineered for increased safety. With new software developed, in conjunction with the new flow sensor, the Torrent Eco provides stable hot water temperatures from the higher temperatures within the thermal store. ENQUIRY-Card 580
