Fire & Water resistance see Magply picked to play vital role for Bath Rugby The Recreation Ground in Bath is one of the crucibles of English rugby, famous long before the professional era and still a venue other Premiership and European sides frequently find presents a challenge they cannot meet. It is also a location that posed specific physical and technical questions for the materials used in building the new West Stand, which Magply met in full. The new Gem Stand sponsored by brewery Bath Ales, backs onto the River Avon which is prone to periodic flooding, while the project architects, Arena 1865 also had to take several other design criteria into consideration. These included the provision of fire protection to help safeguard the 4,500 spectators the steel framed structure can accommodate, while rigidity, all round durability and ease of installation were all important. Project Architect, Simon Pugh-Jones outlined the long term ambitions for the ground as a resource to serve the people of Bath rather than just the rugby club, as well as the way Magply aligned with the demands of the most recent building project. He commented: “The Recreation Ground is the spiritual home of Bath Rugby, but the game has grown and the facilities no longer match all the needs. Our long term objective is to redevelop the ground and a year ago we embarked on a planning process to give certainty over the next four years while the bigger plan is considered and this involved building a new ‘temporary’ West Stand. This sits on the massive old base of the stand rebuilt after World War Two, with spreader plates to carry the steel frame. Unfortunately, however, the Rec is prone to flooding rapidly to a depth of a metre or more and therefore the building has to be resilient. Also safety requirements have been increased over the years and the new West Stand gives us better facilities including more toilets, more bars and better access and egress in an emergency. We looked at a full range of board solutions including high performance gypsum and recycled plastic, but when we got into the science and the costings, it soon

became clear the only board which ticked all the boxes was Magply. If there is a flood we will be able to quickly wash it down and repaint it, while it will continue to offer full fire resistance. We didn’t need specialist installers and although some of those unfamiliar were sceptical to begin with, they soon found it easy to work with in achieving a neat fit, which also included some fire-boarding applications.” Simon summed up saying: “We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved with this project and the product gave us exactly what we wanted. As a club Bath is all about elite performance, constantly pushing forward and Magply fits with that ethos.” In total some 2000 square metres of the Magply 1200 x 2400 x 9 mm boards were consumed in fitting out the main passageway beneath the Gem Stand where supporters can access various concession stands as well as the other facilities. Available from distributors nationwide, Magply continues to grow in popularity with consultants and contractors as well as manufacturers of fire doors, bathroom pods, custodial buildings, park homes and other modular buildings. Ultimately, it offers a long maintenance free life and peace of mind for the building specifier in respect of the ever present danger of fire to life and property.

PENDOCK FACILITATES CALM ENVIRONMENT AT IPSWICH ONCOLOGY DAY UNIT Pendock, the UK’s leading encasement specialist, has supplied 14 column casings for the refurbishment of the Oncology Day Unit at Ipswich Hospital. This is on the back of a successful scheme undertaken at Ashford Hospital, for whom the British company manufactured similar installations. For the oncology unit refurbishment, though, a variety of column shapes have been specified; some have been tailored to fit around partition walls, while one even finishes on a top of a desk in this attractive and unusual redevelopment. Happily creating bespoke column casings is a routine exercise for Pendock, being that the company provides a full site survey, design and installation package – if needed - to ensure projects are well managed from start to finish. Kier was the main contractor for the Ipswich day unit refurbishment and it specified a selection of semi-circular and quadrant form enclosures for the scheme. The laminated column casings are a robust 10mm in thickness and were fully preformed and trial assembled at Pendock’s factory in Telford to ensure accuracy. For both shapes, there are some flat panels supplied, with aluminium top hat male and female joints provided to assist with straightforward assembly on site. The inner top and bottom collars were supplied in a striking diamond black laminate finish to compliment the gleaming white surfaces of the enclosures, adding to the clean, calming and contemporary style, which the project team from KLH Architects was striving for. Varying in height from 1910mm to 2400mm and 2650mm, the diameter of the enclosures supplied varied between 450, 500 and 550mmm with a couple of larger ones expanding to 750 and 920mm. While illustrating Pendock’s ability to meet the often wide-ranging demands of its clients, Pendock has produced far larger units for other commercial and retail

as well as public sector projects. Indeed, Pendock’s manufacturing process at its UK factory boasts an experienced and well-trained workforce, which takes pride in the pipe boxing and column casings they manufacture. The in-house design team can offer everything from telephone support and technical guidance to full CAD drawings. Furthermore, as well as being respected for the bespoke service it provides, Pendock is also able to provide a wide range of off-the-shelf products to ensure that installers can access products on a next day basis if required.

EAST END CONVERSION CONTRACT CONSUMES 2,000 MARMOX MULTIBOARDS The conversion of an eighties’ building into 124 high specification apartments in London has included the use of large quantities of Marmox Multiboards, fitted within every new dwelling as part of a build-up containing electric underfloor heating. The property, located in the capital’s vibrant East End, is being refurbished and reconfigured by Quinn (London) Ltd., with the supplies of high performance and very versatile Marmox Multiboard coming through the Northampton branch of Travis Perkins. In total 2,000 of the 600mm wide by 1250mm long boards, at either 10mm or 12.5mm thick, are being consumed during a contract set to run for 12 months. Quinn’s workforce are overlaying the existing reinforced concrete slabs with the Multiboards before the electrical cabling for the underfloor heating is clipped in place, and a self-smoothing screed pumped across each area. The two board thicknesses facilitate dealing with differences in the substrate as well as the final installation of either tiles or timber laminate floorcoverings, depending on room location. Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene, or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. They are both light to handle and easy to cut, while still being able to carry substantial loadings if employed as part of a flooring build up. They further offer good acoustic as well as thermal insulation performances.

Marmox Multiboard is frequently specified as a wet room, water resistant insulation board that can be fixed to walls, floors and ceilings. It can simply be glued in place with a solvent-free adhesive or it can be fixed with a range of specialized washers and dowels. Flexible, curved boards are also available, as well as pipe boxing. A spokesperson for the project team commented: “This is a challenging contract undertaken in a competitive market where speed of achieving handover is equally as important as the quality of the finished fit-out. We have employed the Marmox Multiboards on past projects and know they are both easy to cut and install, while being robust enough to walk on repeatedly while the underfloor heating is installed. The finished work is looking very good.”

STYRENE PACKAGING & INSULATION LTD Address: Morley Carr Road, Low Moor, Bradford BD12 0RA Tel: (0)1274 691 777 Email: info@styrene.biz Web: www.styrene.biz

Stylite T-Beam Suspended Floor Insulation System Due to the current shortage of aerated concrete blocks, a national house builder wanted an alternative flooring system for a large residential new build housing project in West Yorkshire. The unique Stylite T-Beam Suspended Floor Insulation system was introduced to the clients design team, who quickly saw the benefits it offered and were quick to specify the system. The shortage of aerated concrete blocks in the UK, caused by a reduction in the availability of fresh Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) is causing long delays on construction sites. A byproduct of coal-fired power stations, PFA is an essential

ingredient of concrete blocks, giving them their thermal insulation properties. A warm winter, low gas prices and gradual closure of coal-fired plants for cleaner energy sources has reduced the amount of available PFA. Styrene Packaging & Insulation worked closely with the client and concrete beam manufacturer to design a holistic solution. The unique Stylite T-Beam Suspended Floor Insulation solution comprised of lightweight Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) panels contour cut to suit the profile of the concrete beams. The interlocking EPS panels were installed between the beams with the “toe extending underneath to provide the all round insulation and eliminating cold bridging. The panels specified were 230mm deep to achieve a U-value of 0.22 W/m2K meeting the clients requirements for Building Regulations. To complete the floor design a macro fibre concrete screed topping of 75mm was specified.

Breath-taking finish with Airless Finish Plaster Tasked with plastering two properties on Horse Shoe Lane in Guildford, Currier Plastering used Knauf Airless Finish, and soon realised that the Airless range provided a stunning finish whilst saving time on plastering by traditional methods. Contractors Merit Building Services tasked Currier Plastering with the boarding, plastering and painting of two large plots on Horse Shoe Lane in Guildford. Ross Currier, project manager of Currier Plastering, knew that Airless Finish would be ideal for the project. “After years of plastering in the traditional way by hand, we were able to test the Airless Finish range and we were really impressed. We knew Knauf products well, as we have used MPFinish and MP75 before this.” Work on the Horse Shoe Lane development began in February, and plastering took place over a period of two weeks. Part of the Readymixed Finishing Solutions range, Airless Finish has a number of advantages over traditional plastering systems that can lead to a significant timesavings during a project. Using a high pressure piston pump machine, Airless Finish is applied in two coats of between 1 and 2mm, leading to an average drying time of 12-24 hours. The Airless range of products can be applied up to four times faster than conventional plastering methods. “The system really comes into its own when used in big open spaces, but the speed advantage isn’t the only benefit. We were absolutely amazed with the finish we were able to achieve by using it. “It makes a huge difference to be able to go through a job and not have to worry about snagging. When we use the Knauf product, the quality of the finish itself is so high that we can actually save time on the overall project – there is

no need to go back over our work as we would when using traditional plastering techniques.” Knauf Airless Finish does not require a direct water supply on site, as it is pre-mixed in the factory to the correct consistency. Because of this, any spare material can be placed back into the hopper or tub and recycled, another reason why Ross was so pleased. “Compared to traditional plastering, this produces very little waste at all, and everything else that is spare goes straight back into the hopper. The only water that we actually require on site these days is to clean our tools after we’ve used them.

Vicaima turn on design flair at Electricity Vicaima innovative door designs have been featured prominently in a landmark city centre project for Crest Nicholson, which sees a modern apartment complex created in a former 1930’s iconic utility building. Electricity House has stood at the very heart of Bristol City centre since its construction in the late 1930’s and was perhaps best known as the home of the South West Electricity Board. Designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also famously created the much loved red telephone box, this building has commanded attention for generations. With its Portland stone façade and magnificent curved frontage, the building embodies the grace of the Art Deco era. Now this bygone treasure has taken on a new lease of life following its lovingly re-imagined and inspired regeneration by Quality developer Crest Nicholson. They have created luxury living space by blending period charm with contemporary interior design. Of course inspired design requires inspirational products and so Crest chose Vicaima to enhance the apartment entrance doors with Dekordor 3D Portaro matching door and frame systems. This was further augmented by a surrounding and matching wall panelling which incorporated distinctive back

lit apartment numbering. Performance was to client requirements which included certified FD30 fire doors with a roller lock and eye viewer. Dekordor 3D provides a horizontal and highly tactile grain effect and Crest selected 3D Grey finish to provide the perfect tonal contrast to the wall and floor covering. 3D Grey was also chosen for the communal areas, including the striking and visually dominating atrium area, where occupants enjoy a panoramic view of multiple floor levels, displaying Vicaima doors at every level. Inside the apartments and penthouses themselves, Vicaima Satin White doors with Easi-Fit frames were selected. These ultra-smooth white lacquered doors provide a luxurious look and feel at every turn and fit perfectly with the superior build quality synonymous with this project. The design has been further embellished with the addition of a refined groove pattern, which was also carried through onto the architraves to add yet another design element. Overall the project is a fine example of regeneration at its best and Vicaima products are sure to grace this reincarnation for generations to come. Vicaima offer an extensive range of innovative design options, with fire, acoustic and security performance for luxury housing and modern apartment living space.

Sustainable homes feature REHAU Heating & Cooling A whole raft of REHAU low energy heating and cooling solutions have been chosen for an innovative development of sustainable homes in Lighthorne, Warwickshire. Specialist designers and contractors Be Green Systems, working in partnership with Housestyle Countrywide, are fitting the contemporary family homes with ground source energy and REHAU underfloor heating systems as standard, and then showcasing additional options such as REHAU chilled ceilings and MVHR to buyers in the onsite show home. The intention is that, once buyers on the development see how easily and cost effectively these can be integrated into a new property and experience for themselves the gentle heating, cooling and ventilation which they generate, they will specify them for themselves. Be Green Systems has been a long term customer of REHAU, routinely choosing the RAUVITHERM pre-insulated pipework for district heating projects and the REHAU floor systems and PE-Xa pipework for underfloor heating installations. At Lighthorne, RAUVITHERM pipework is connecting all of the nine properties to a ground-source energy collector installed under the road. A heat pump in each property is generating the low flow and return temperatures required

for the REHAU underfloor heating systems. REHAU’s flexible heating and plumbing pipework is also supplying the hot and cold running water. Definitely the most unique aspect of the project is the inclusion of REHAU’s CoolBoard chilled ceiling system in the kitchen, living room and master bedroom of the show home. Extensively proven in the commercial sector, this is the first time that REHAU CoolBoard has been installed in a domestic property. REHAU CoolBoard is essentially plasterboard panels with integrated loops of REHAU’s RAUTHERM 10mm PE-Xa pipe, through which chilled water is circulated to provide a sustainable alternative to conventional air conditioning. It is an all-in-one solution which is quick and easy to install with pre-drilled fixing holes located on each panel for fixing to the ceiling.
