The Joyner Bolt is a unique fixing which has been designed to overcome the shortcomings of traditional fixings, such as coach bolts and threaded rods. The bolt features an innovative square head so that it cannot be pulled through the wood as the joint is tightened, ensuring that the timber face won’t be damaged. In addition, it contains eight integral spikes to immediately grip and hold the timber. This ensures the joint will not become loose over time even when it is inserted into a hole that has been drilled too large, therefore guaranteeing an optimum and longer lasting connection. As it can be fitted with one hand, the bolt is easy to use and is the ideal

solution for tradespeople tasked with connecting timber in difficult to reach areas, such as in floors, rafters and ceiling joints. The bolt, which is brand new to the market, is priced from just £9.40 per pack of 10 bolts. Jamie Johnson, product manager at IronmongeryDirect, said: “The Joyner Bolt is a fantastic new product that solves many of the problems that are often encountered when fixing timber. It has been designed by two industry experts who have combined their knowledge and experience to develop a product that meets all Building Regulations and also the needs of the building chain, from architect to tradesman. “We’re extremely pleased to be one of the first retailers to be supplying this new innovative product. Our aim is to continuously try and enhance our offering to our customers to meet their extensive requirements. By stocking revolutionary products such as the Joyner Bolt, we are able fulfil this aim and offer our customers the very best solutions available on the market.” For more information, please visit www.IronmongeryDirect.com/ Joyner-Bolt www.mclink.co.uk/869-583 ENQUIRY-Card 583

Commercial office converstion for Brighton Campus features Marmox Close to a thousand square metres of Tektalan boards, manufactured by Heraklith and supplied by Marmox UK, have been consumed in the conversion of former American Express premises into a major new media centre for the University of Brighton. The refurbishment and redevelopment project, led by Balfour Beatty with NEX Architects being responsible for the design work, has created space for 250 students to take courses in media studies. The sub-contractor, which fitted the two different thicknesses of Tektalan, was Broadsword Projects, based along the coast in Southampton. The panels were specified to improve the thermal and acoustic performance, as well as the appearance of several soffit areas within the buildings. These included the underside of two structural concrete floors and an entrance canopy.

Kalsi Group unveils new K-Blue Range at NMBS Exhibition

Howarth Timber experts deliver fire safety seminar

Low maintenance building products manufacturer, Kalsi Group will be debuting its new K-Blue range at this year’s NMBS exhibition (13th April) at the RICOH Arena in Coventry. After a successful launch in November 2015 this event marks its introduction to the independent market, a valuable customer-base for the West Midlandsbased business. K-Blue has been designed and manufactured for the carriage of cold potable water in buried pipeline applications. As well as the new piping system visitors will be able to take a closer look at the company’s extensive range of low maintenance building products. “We have a lot to offer; that’s why events such as this are invaluable,” comments Kalsi Group, UK sales manager Graham Wilde.

Howarth Timber and Building Supplies shared its expertise as one of the leading authorities on fire door safety at a recent Fire Safety and Protection seminar hosted by Johnstone’s Trade. More than 200 delegates heard experts from Howarth Timber – which is one of the founding members of the British Woodworking Federation’s (BWF) Certifire Fire Door Scheme - deliver a comprehensive guide to the latest developments on fire door installation and current building regulations, alongside representatives from the BWF. The event brought together specifiers, architects, project managers, quantity surveyors and asset managers who came to learn about the correct methods and procedures for fire safety within buildings, and Howarth Timber’s inclusion on the speaker lineup reaffirmed the company’s position as industry-leading experts on fire safety.

Inta goes HIPER for heat interface units

Inta has introduced its ‘HIPER’ high performance heat interface unit (HIU), designed to deliver heating and hot water whilst improving energy efficiency and minimising costs in multi-dwelling developments. Installed in shared residential buildings, the HIU distributes heating and domestic hot water from a central plant system to individual properties. By removing the need for each area to have a conventional boiler, gas flue and hot water cylinder, the interface units dramatically reduce build costs for developers. Inta has worked to develop a product that has more features and benefits than any other HIU on the market. HIPER HIU boasts a factory-set, non-electric temperature control valve which prevents risk of scalding in the event of a power supply failure, as well as features the most advanced dualspeed PID control (patent pending) of any unit, intelligently controlling the heat into the plate heat exchangers by electronic modulation of a PICV (pressure independent control valve). www.mclink.co.uk/869-111 ENQUIRY-Card 111

Clark-Drain launches High Max cover Clark-Drain launches new version of its D400 High Max series – designed with Water Companies, Local Authorities and Highways Contractors in mind. The manhole cover will satisfy the heavily trafficked needs of UK road networks. As road traffic intensifies and weather conditions become more changeable the ‘best-fit’ specification and installation of access covers to specific industry requirements has a role to play in supporting ‘whole life costs’ and health and safety needs. Addex, the dust control specialists, as you’ve only got one pair of lungs.. As you are probably aware, main contractors and the HSE are increasingly concerned about dust and many construction sites are now insisting that contractors have their own M or H class vacuums before they are able to start work. Many sites even have a clean sweep policy, so no brooms allowed either! The HSE say ‘Construction dust is not just a nuisance – it can seriously damage your health. Regularly breathing in these dusts over a long time can cause life-changing lung diseases’. The threat is not only to your health but also

organisations have a responsibility to protect their workforce and using out dated equipment can have serious legal implications. Dust extraction should be high on your agenda. As a supplier of niche products,

we were approached by a number of clients to source some solutions. We searched for a powerful, sensibly priced and sized vacuum that had the capability of removing these small dangerous dust particles. It had to be versatile and capable of being used for multiple jobs on sites. The Starmix, engineered in Germany was the vacuum of choice. Available in M & H Class, this vacuum it is now revolutionising the way we keep our sites dust free and is available UK wide through Addex. Since then we have been sourcing and testing other tools and equipment to keep your working environment dust free: The Bohrfixx, a vacuum attachment that takes dust away at source whilst drilling, the WaleTale, another ingenious vacuum attachment which clips onto the edge of a bucket sucking up the clouds of dust created when pouring dry aggregate and our latest addition the Dust Blocker 500, an aircleaner delivering 500 m³ of clean air to your workspace every hour. To find out more about our dust extraction equipment visit our website addex-group.com or call our experts on 01432 346850. puncture resistant soles and composite, nonmetal toe caps.

With generous cushioning, feet are well supported during the tradesman’s working day, while the brand’s patented Dry’N Air air cooling ensures feet never get too hot, even during the summer months.

Exceeding the latest legislation for safety footwear on building sites, Base shoes and boots are made with typical Italian design and passion, taking advantage of the highest quality materials to ensure they are strong and durable enough for the most rugged of site-work. Strong bonds between the sole and upper lining also mean that the footwear will last the test of time, making Base a quality investment.

Base safety footwear even has a patented SmellStop system, meaning shoes and boots can be taken off with confidence that they won’t leave a bad smell behind, an important point for any tradesman working in customers’ homes. While comfort is all-important, safety is never compromised with Base footwear, which offers the superb non-slip performance, along with

22 Tools, Site Equipment & Workwear . View our publication online at www.McDermottPublishing.com . February 2016 . A new marketing campaign designed to raise awareness of airborne dust emission associated with sanding is being introduced by Mirka this month. ‘Abranet® Perfection’ is being communicated across print, social media and digital platforms through a series of compelling imagery to highlight the importance of air quality control to minimise occupational exposure to airborne dust in a variety of sanding operations. The marketing campaign is being supported with a beautifully designed coffee table style book that features pre and post Abranet imagery and data to reinforce the abrasive’s ability to deliver clean, virtually dust-free working environments. The data is founded on research conducted by DURAG GROUP, a leading independent environmental monitoring and data management company, in laboratory conditions, supported by the Finnish Work Environment and Mirka. The aim was to determine airborne dust emission in sanding with a ventilated manual sanding machine, comparing Abranet products with perforated paper.

Mirka’s Abranet Perfection campaign raises issue of air quality control The results showed that sanding with the abrasive net reduced the airborne dust emission per the removed mass at between 99.96 and 99.99 per cent depending on the material, compared to between 97.05 and 99.76 per cent for perforated paper. When sanding gypsum plaster, the removed mass per unit time was 2.6 and 1.4 times higher with the net abrasive

than in sanding without extraction and when sanding with paper incorporating six holes respectively. While the surface of the paper sanding material became clogged, the Abranet abrasive with extraction improved the effectiveness of the sanding by preventing clogging and increased the removed mass per unit time. 7000 series of Digital Moisture Meters

Thermal imaging has become essential technology for diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults and also for spotting energy loss and other building problems. Not every application, however, needs to be pursued with a fully featured infrared camera and this is why FLIR Systems has introduced its new TG130. Priced at just £181* (ex VAT), this new Spot Thermal Camera features the FLIR Lepton® core that is the size of a smart phone SIM card. This makes the new TG130 lightweight, ergonomic and pocket portable so it is always available for instant troubleshooting. Simply aim the instrument at a target object or surface to measure the temperature, then click the trigger to freeze and view the image.

British made, the 7000 series, from ETI Ltd., of Moisture Meters are compact hand held digital moisture meters designed specifically for building professionals and tradesmen to detect the moisture content in a variety of construction materials. The 7000 series moisture meters incorporate an easy to read 20-LED colour-coded scale which is synchronised with the units LCD to display current moisture levels; green for 'OK', amber for 'WARNING' or red for 'DAMP'. The colour-coded scale allows users to interpret the moisture level at a glance. Additionally, the instrument features a large numerical LCD display, with low battery indication. Five different measurement scales are included – wood 1, wood 2, plaster, concrete and a reference scale, measuring moisture over the range 0.1 to 40.0%.

Specification of Liquid Roofing & Waterproofing Systems Stand Number: E5090

Liquid waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, will be showcasing its comprehensive range of BBA-certified Kemperol liquid roofing and waterproofing systems on stand E5090 at this year’s Ecobuild Show (8-10 March 2016), along with its Stratex warm roof system. The only cost effective, solvent-free and completely odourless cold liquid applied waterproofing system available in the UK, Kemperol 2K-PUR will take centre stage on Kemper System’s stand.

Around 80% of the applied polyols (or resins) in Kemperol 2K-PUR are obtained from the seeds of the tropical castor plant (Ricinus communis) a renewable resource. Perfect for use on sustainable construction projects and ideal for live projects on occupied buildings, such as schools, hospitals, food factories or office buildings, Kemperol 2K-PUR allows work to take place without the need for evacuation or closure, avoiding the disruption associated with the strong odours and fumes from many

‘low-odour’ or solvent-based products. Stratex from Kemper System will also be on show. An integrated warm roof that offers exceptional performance, Stratex is supplied as a complete system of matched components - vapour barrier, insulation and waterproofing. It is equally suited to concrete, timber and metal decks on new build projects as it is to refurbishing and upgrading existing roofs. Stratex is also ideal as a complete warm roof solution below an extensive green roof. It can be supplied

Comments UK marketing manager of Kemper System, Stuart Hicks: “Our product range is designed primarily for use in commercial refurbishment, maintenance and new build projects. Kemper System’s waterproofing and surfacing products have protected billions of square metres of roofs around the world over the past 50 years, including some of the world's most important landmarks,

Synseal will be exhibiting for a fourth year in succession at this year’s Ecobuild, which is taking place at the ExCeL exhibition centre in London’s Docklands on 8th-10th March. Building on the success of their focussed presence at previous Ecobuild shows, Synseal’s stand will seek to demonstrate the sheer diversity of Synseal group window and door product solutions with a focus on true innovation. Stand E2006 will feature the new Celsius Solid Roof, a truly warm and quick fitting roofing solution for new build and retrofit projects, alongside the popular WarmCore "warm aluminium" folding sliding door which delivers low U-values of 1.4 W/m2K using 28mm double glass or 1.0 W/m2K using 44mm triple glass. Following a high impact launch in November 2014, WarmCore has delivered sales success for many companies across the window industry in 2015 and Synseal’s Ecobuild stand may indicate how this innovative “warm aluminium” technology will be extended during 2016 beyond the original quick-fitting and highly engineered bi-fold door product

iconic buildings, public and commercial properties. “As we continue to prioritise environmental performance in the built environment of the future, Kemper System’s advanced roofing technology can make roofs greener and more sustainable. A visit to our stand will give you the knowledge you need to specify liquid roofing and waterproofing systems with complete confidence.” www.mclink.co.uk/869-524

Hitachi Air Conditioning Europe releases new heat pump product line-up at Ecobuild Completely redesigned to meet the needs of specifiers, installers and homeowners, and representing one of the widest ranges on the market, Hitachi is launching its expanded Yutaki air source heat pump product range at this year’s Ecobuild (Stand No. E3264). Utilising common components, common outdoor units and simplified design to benefit both end users and installers, the extended line-up includes a total of 70 new models which are more compact for small installation

spaces and are lighter weight for easier handling. The introduction of common components and controllers streamlines product training requirements, reduces the need for carrying multiple spares, and lowers installation and maintenance time. Performances have also been improved, with higher COPs, better seasonal efficiencies and higher capacities. Yutaki-S has a new 6kW outdoor unit as well as three indoor units (4.5kW, 6kW and 7.5kW) to suit the heating and

domestic hot water requirements of small to large properties and is ideal for both new build and renovation projects. All-in-one Yutaki-SCombi also includes a new 6kW model, plus an innovative solar version with integrated 260L domestic hot water (DHW) tank, with solar coils designed specifically to be ‘ready to use’ with solar panels. High temperature Yutaki-S80, which generates domestic hot water at up to 80oC, has been completely redesigned and now includes two specific indoor units to be used either standalone (with top pipe connections) or with an optional 200L or 260L domestic hot water (DHW) tank, with rigid pipe connections to the rear of the unit. Monobloc Yutaki-M, which requires no indoor space, now shares many of the same components and controllers as the splits in the range for simplicity of installation and maintenance. Vectaire heat recovery units

Pegler Yorkshire, market-leading manufacturer of plumbing and heating products, will be exhibiting on stand E2250 at this year's EcoBuild, taking place at London’s Excel from 8th – 10th March 2016. Pegler Yorkshire’s will continue to promote its range of ‘Connect & Control’ products and solutions with an emphasis, this year, on Control and how this solution can ensure greater building efficiency. "Our Connect and Control philosophies are still very much at the core of our business. Virtually all products and solutions within our portfolio sit within these two concepts which ultimately provide solutions for more efficient installations and building performance," said Phill Jackson business development and marketing director Pegler Yorkshire. "Products in the spotlight include our range of commissioning valves, Heat Interface Units, Terrier TRVs and the latest products to join our taps range.”

Vectaire heat recovery units are to be installed in two prestigious London building projects. EVO250DCs will be fitted into dwellings in the new Battersea Reach development, and Midis and Maxis are to be installed into the Kings Cross T1 Building. All units have energy efficient EC motors, providing an effective, low energy, low running cost solution to controlling condensation and pollution (in up to 7 rooms). They are up to 94% heat exchange efficient with low specific fan powers. The sophisticated control unit on these products gives options for summer-bypass, frost-stat, over-run timer on boost setting, variable adjustment for trickle and boost speeds, and humidity control. All of Vectaire’s energy efficient range of ventilation products – including the new Midi Lite and ELP2204 - will be displayed on Vectaire’s stand E2202 at Ecobuild.

Rinnai comprehesive space heat range covers all options

Rinnai Energysaver fanned convection powered flue gas fired space heaters are designed specifically for use in schools, community centres, libraries, conservatories and churches and other large spaces, where they have earned themselves a considerable fan base over the past 30 years. Now, with a new super energy efficient addition to the range in the form of the Rinnai Energysaver 559FT with sleek good looks, and a matching new streamlined look for the popular Energysaver 309FT, Rinnai is leading the field in large interior space heating. Sporting a modern, sleek casing, the heaters simply blend into the background in line with modern demands in terms of modern interior aesthetics while offering exceptionally high efficiencies in operation and subsequently reduced running costs. Changes have been made to the operation board which is now an easy to use touch control pad sited conveniently and discreetly on top of the appliance, (rather than on the front with a flip up cover). The unit is also supplied with a child lock to eliminate any problem of small hands tampering with the controls. Add to these advantages timer function and eco mode combined with the new unit’s ability to heat spaces fast and the advantages of this super

efficient appliance really do stack up. The 559FT has an input of 6.4kW and output of 5.2kW. The streamlined unit measures 554mm x 750mm x 250mm. The Rinnai Energysaver 309FT, like the 559FT, sports a similar sleek casing and turns in net efficiencies of 88%. It has an input of 3.4kW and output of 2.92kW. The streamlined unit measures 695mm x 465mm x 257mm. Natural Gas usage has been pegged at 0.31m3 while LPG consumption is 0.26kg/hr. Also available is the Energysaver 1004T with its impressive input of 11.6kW and outputs 10.23kW. Its measurements are 670mm x 930mm x 315mm and it has energy efficiencies of 96% under the guidance of Part L 2014. This puts it in the top rank of space heaters in its class. Like the Energy Saver 559FT and 309FT, the 1004T heater is also suitable for central timer control. This feature allows the building manager to run any number of Rinnai space heaters off a central time clock providing heat to the largest of

spaces. The Energysaver Multi controller is not limited to single Energysavers as the flexibility of the system guarantees units can be mixed and matched to satisfy even the most unique of buildings. Rinnai Energysaver units are very easy to install as they do not need expensive (and extensive) ductwork, nor do they involve the necessity to run domestic heating circuits for radiators or pipework to boilers. This cuts down drastically on cost and time at the point of installation Rinnai Energysaver range delivers energy-efficient and consistent warm air powered by Natural Gas and LPG options and is built with fully modulating burners so heat output and energy input is reduced as the space warms up. The Rinnai Energysaver range comprises fanned convectionpowered flue models that exceed seasonal thermal heating guidance under Building Regs Part L. www.mclink.co.uk/869-528 ENQUIRY-Card 528

28 Heating & Plumbing . View our publication online at www.McDermottPublishing.com . February 2016 . For contractors and installers looking for a fit-and-forget electric heating solution, the Aeroflow range of electric radiators from radiator supplier, Electrorad, offers reliability guaranteed thanks to a 30 year warranty and a whole host of advanced technical features. Covering all internal components, excluding thermostat, the warranty is the most comprehensive of its kind in the industry.

ELECTRORAD AEROFLOW Radiators offer reliability

Comprising of six models in a variety of sizes, the Aeroflow range boasts heat efficiencies courtesy of integral fireclay heat plates that help distribute radiant heat in the same way as gas central heating radiators. This means no fluids and no pipes, as well as no maintenance and easy installation. In addition, all models also provide a mix of meaning warm people and radiant and convected heat; warm rooms. Unlike other models currently available, Aeroflow offers three thermostatic control options. An accurate built-in digital electronic room thermostat comes as standard with 24 hour/seven day programming and this also may be operated by RF receiver. Alternatively, an electronic analogue thermostat is available that is a popular choice with the elderly. To ensure the accuracy of the thermostat, the room ambient air temperature is sensed underneath the radiator where the room is at its coldest. The RF receiver control is operated by remote control that can operate multiple radiators within the home, all

from one single point. Multiple zones may also be set up with the home to control separate floors or areas. Available in a wide range of heat outputs, Aeroflow radiators are slimline and modern in design and provide the perfect compliment to any room. They provide the ideal add-on to conservatories where Part L dictates that conservatory heating should be isolated from the main home heating system. With models available in 300mm height, they are ideal for installing on conservatory dwarf walls or under low sills. Electrorad’s managing director, Richard Brown, said: "When it comes to electric radiators, the Aeroflow range is a sure fire

bet. "Manufactured in Germany to the highest engineering standards, this range offers a fitand-forget solution for contractors and installers, and one that brings a high degree of comfort and heat efficiency for the homeowner. "Manufactured to the very latest European safety standards achieving both CE and GS marks and VDE approval for the quality of components and manufacturing, these models provide the ideal alternative to storage heaters and surpass all other competitor equivalents." www.electrorad.co.uk Tel 0844 479 0055 www.mclink.co.uk/836-518 www.mclink.co.uk/869-532 ENQUIRY-Card ENQUIRY-Card 518 532

Advance Appliances new 20 litre buffer store

Introducing the new Infinity 600BF

Charlton and Jenrick are pleased to announce the launch of the Infinity 600BF to expand the adaptable range of rear vented balanced flue gas fires it now offers. The 600BF achieves an extremely impressive net efficiency of 90% from an economically modest 2.6kW input. The fire offers a great flame picture and exceptional warmth in the room. The fire can be fitted into the wall and trimmed with the same choices available with the conventional flue version. The 600BF also has an optional frame available which allows for the fire to be fitted into the wall ‘frameless’ or into a fireplace as part of a suite. The fire comes with a choice of three firebox liners; Beige Ribbed, Rustic Brick or Black Ribbed. For ultimate flexibility the firebox has also been specifically developed to allow the appliances to be fitted into a modern cavity wall with a minimum cavity size of 50mm; which again, in most cases will result in a straightforward fit. www.mclink.co.uk/869-136 ENQUIRY-Card 136

Sir Stirling Moss puts Keston boilers in pole position Keston Boilers once again overtook the competition when a Heat 55kW boiler was selected to provide high efficiency heating for the Mayfair home of Sir Stirling Moss, OBE, the British former Formula One racing driver. Sir Stirling and Lady Moss have used Keston boilers for over 25 years and when the time came to upgrade their old model there was only one boiler brand they could trust to go the distance. The new Keston Heat 55kW was installed in Sir Stirling’s outdoor boiler house and the ease of fitting meant that the boiler replacement was completed within the day. Sir Stirling affirmed, “Whenever we have needed a boiler installed, we have gone straight back to Keston as we have always found them easy to use and completely reliable - you can’t argue with over 25 years of faultless service. www.mclink.co.uk/869-137 ENQUIRY-Card 137

New Biomass Heating System at 14th Century Manor 21st century specialist pipe work technology from Flexenergy has been used to upgrade the heating system at Headstone Manor, a 14th century moated manor house which was formerly the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury and which forms part of the Headstone Manor Museum. The manor is a Grade 1 listed building which is now under the control of Harrow London Borough Council. Restoration projects and redevelopment of the site will be carried out over a number of years and a recent project involved the renewal of the heating system in the 16th century Grade II* Tithe Barn. The heating system was previously by all electric storage type units. The old system had fallen into disrepair, was expensive to run and underperforming. With no natural gas supply to the site, biomass boilers and a district heating network appealed to the Council’s sustainable aspirations. www.mclink.co.uk/869-138 ENQUIRY-Card 138

Advance Appliances have added a new size to their popular buffer store range. The small and compact 20 litre stainless steel buffer store measures just 280mm diameter by 535mm height including foam insulation. The buffer has one inch female connections at each end. It comes with wall brackets for vertical wall mounting. The store can be used in sealed systems up to 3 bar pressure. Fort Albert o The buffer is designed for use with a heat pump, adding volume to the system, preventing the heat pump from shorting and keeping it working more efficiently. All they have to do is visit www.fitfrankefirst.co.uk with the details of their purchase and they will be instantly entered into an on-line prize draw for a range of spot prizes, all aimed at supporting their business. There will be three draws spread across the year, with the main prize being a holiday worth £2,000. Registration for Fit Franke First is free. The initiative was launched in 2014 with a website featuring a series of

short training and information videos covering popular topics on installing sinks and taps. The site has now been extended so that installers benefit from rewards and exclusive offers, brochures, installation guides, technical support, spares, business advice articles and details of approved Franke retailers. Says Steve Rutter, marketing operations manager at Franke: “Installers play a key role in delivering professionalism across the kitchen industry and we recognise the importance of their custom, which is why

whenever they fit Franke products we are giving them the chance to win a reward that could help them make their business fitter. At the same time, we have enhanced

the dedicated Fit Franke First website to provide more resources to help enhance their skills and knowledge, while aiming to save them time and money.”

Is there an easier way to specify your garage door? Garador introduces EasiQuote, a brand new pricing and specifying garage door service When specifying a new garage door for an opening, it can be all too easy to make a mistake. So Garador, the UK’s leading manufacturer of garage doors, has come up with a solution – a new pricing and specification service called EasiQuote. Thanks to this brand new service, obtaining quotes for Garador garage doors will be really quick and easy. Garador’s Managing Director Simon Hipgrave said the company had been working hard to ensure they led the industry in good service and customer care, and has setup a dedicated EasiQuote team to handle these calls and enquiries. “We believe creating this EasiQuote system will be of real benefit to merchants, both the larger national chains and also the smaller independents, and are delighted the process is now available and ready for 2016,” he said.

The Easi Quote service covers all Garador garage doors including: - Up & Over garage doors - Side Hinged garage doors - Sectional garage doors - GaraRoll roller doors The new service will simplify the ordering process and also ensure more accuracy in the specifications required and the final quote. It is a win-win situation for both the merchant and his customer. To find out more, please contact the Garador EasiQuote team on 01935 443710 or visit www.garador.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/869-545. ENQUIRY-Card 545

So how does it work? 1. The builder visits their local merchant to buy a garage door where they can obtain an EasiQuote form. 2. The builder then fills in the form with the details and returns it to their local merchant. 3. The merchant then sends the form to Garador’s EasiQuote team. 4. The Garador team return an updated form via email/ fax to the merchant branch, with an accurate price – It’s that simple! The great thing is the form provides a clear format for the builder to follow, so the merchant has all the information they need to provide the right door, at the best price possible. Simon Hipgrave argues “We wanted to take all the ambiguity out of ordering a new garage door from your local builder’s merchant. We believe EasiQuote will help our customers to get the best possible door size and price for their project”

‘Aluprof Listens to Specifiers’ In all forms of new and refurbished building construction, Specifiers today are seeking to reduce window frame sight lines to increase light transmittance. Aluprof, one of Europe's leading systems companies, have designed a system with the slimmest of sight lines, the new 'MB Slimline' system. With a fixed light and opening light aluminium face width of just 32.5mm Aluprof’s new ‘MB Slimline’ window offers both good looks and high thermal performance - something steel window systems cannot offer. U values of below 1.00 are achievable, as the new system will accept both double and triple glazing options coupled with aluminium profiles which use wide polyamide thermal break. With a wide range of profiles available, the ‘MB Slimline’ system can offer high inertia ratings and slim, deep profiles, offering the specifier the ability to use the system in any large, or small, window spaces. www.mclink.co.uk/869-144 ENQUIRY-Card 144

Inspired in part by Frank Lloyd-Wright’s Fallingwater house, modern architects and self-builders are increasingly seeking to re-establish connections with the landscape around them through the innovative use of panoramic glazing in windows and doors. As light enters the room from two angles, wide panoramic vistas, landscapes and cityscapes are opened up. Where ground floor space is at a premium, cornerless opening can be incorporated to save space by connecting two lift and slide door sets at right angles to create the opening. “There is now a real range of options for architects and self-builders to incorporate ultra-modern, visually stimulating design into their projects by using cornerless windows and sliding door systems”, said Anthony Burt of Peterborough-based joinery suppliers Toolfix Joinery and Construction supplies.

Comar 5P.i Advanced Window System Using latest thermal break technology to produce windows for the next generation of solutions. Integration is the key factor which underpins the latest new product launch from Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems. Their market leading Comar 9P.i Framing system offers fast-track semi unitised construction for floor to ceiling glazing, allowing tilt/turn or casement windows to hang direct from the Comar 9P.i Frame as well as rebated doors. With the addition of thermal foam and triple glazing Comar 9P.i offers U-values down to 0.77, creating a future proof solution for their architectural, contractor and fabricator partners. Comar announce they have incorporated the technology from their Comar 9P.i system into the Comar 5P.i window range, and are now launching the Comar 5P.i Advanced Casement and Tilt/Turn window system which integrates seamlessly into Comar 9P.i creating the option for standalone high performance windows.

The Inside Track on Eclisse Pocket Door Systems

Interview with John Neale, Eclisse UK’s resident technical expert on pocket doors. John has been working with Eclisse UK for many years and knows the Eclisse pocket door systems inside out. Q. You speak to builders on a daily basis, what is the most common question you are asked? Well apart from, ‘Can I get a trade discount?’ (… and the answer is yes!), the most common question I am asked is, ‘Can pocket doors be retrofitted into an existing stud wall?’ and the answer to that is also yes. They can even be used alongside existing solid support walls so the applications are many. Q. Where are Eclisse pocket door systems most commonly being used? Our single pocket door systems are extremely popular and are being used more and more to take the place of hinged doors. Most people start with the smaller rooms such as en-suites and utility rooms and small bathrooms but soon start using them for other situations as soon as they see that they are simple, reliable and easy to fit and

a great way to get more out of each room. We are finding that people are buying more of our double door and telescopic door ranges as room dividers for extensions or large open plan spaces. The doors can be opened up for entertaining, or for keeping an eye on young kids, and then closed off to make the space more cosier or to hide the kids play area when they have gone to bed. Q. Why should I choose Eclisse? On starting work with Eclisse UK, over 5 years ago, I was very impressed with the strength and quality of the Eclisse pocket door system. The pocket door systems are very easy to assemble; many parts just click into place, so assembly is a breeze. Also, an important point is that there is no need to cut or adjust the metal frame to suit your door as each Eclisse pocket door system is designed to fit each specific standard UK door size so it fits first time, every time. The pocket door systems are guaranteed for 12 years and tested to 25. Plus we keep all standard sizes in stock for a next day delivery to local builders all over the country. Q. What if the customer wants a nonstandard size? We can help you with that too. We supply bespoke sizes up to 2 m wide and 3 m high for single doors and double that for double doors. Q. Is it easy to work out if a pocket door system will fit where I want it to? Yes, we have lots of information on our website and also a great brochure that gives a step by step guide of how to choose the right one for you. It’s easy if you know the door panel size then you can see immediately the overall system size and how much wall you will need or vice versa (see diagram 1 below).

Q. Does the door slide all the way into the frame? With the Eclisse system the amount the door goes back into the pocket is fully adjustable, even after installation, however, we make a point of explaining to our customers that if you are fitting flush pulls as door furniture you need to bear in mind there is a safety issue should someone leave their finger in the flush pull as it goes into the pocket. For that reason, the Eclisse systems are pre-

Doors & Windows 41

set for the door to protrude 7 cm from the pocket. Q. Is it possible to add a lock to a pocket door? Yes. (See image 2) See our website for the full range there’s quite a choice! Q. Do you supply doors with your pocket door systems? Timber doors no. Whilst this might seem strange, the logic behind it is that we make our systems to fit the door the customer chooses which gives them the freedom of a much wider choice of design than we could supply and the door they choose will match all the other doors in the dwelling. We do supply many frameless glass doors however as we have a failsafe ‘no drop’ method of attaching the glass to the runners. These doors are great for en-suites, more space and more light. Q. Will the siding action deteriorate over time? Our pocket door systems have loads of innovative features to give the installer peace of mind. The Eclisse runners are fully enclosed in the track and cannot jump out. They are maintenance free and tested to 100,000 cycles – that’s around 25 years of average use! Another small but important feature of our pocket door systems is the selfcentering door guide that is quick and easy to fit. Unlike other systems, it is attached to the frame itself and is bang on centre every time ensuring a smooth sliding action. We know that doors warp, and we know that this could cause an imperfect sliding action over time however the Eclisse systems come complete with an extruded aluminium anti-warp profile to be used with your door. Should the door warp the profile remains straight and the sliding action perfect. Plastic profiles just don’t do the job. Q. Will Eclisse pocket doors stay shut when closed? Yes, even without a lock! We have designed a lug and retention device on the front and rear runners that ‘click’ gently into place when the door is fully open or fully closed. So closed means closed and open means open with Eclisse. Q. Do I need to take into account the finished wall thickness? Yes, it is very important. The actual steel framework of our system can be assembled for 100 mm or 125 mm finished wall thicknesses but, we also supply the full timber jamb lining kit and that is specific to either 100mm or 125 mm finished wall so you need to know which it is at time of ordering.

Sliding Pocket Door Systems

Q. Why do you supply a timber jamb kit with your pocket door systems? We could have just supplied the steel sliding pocket door system, it’s great, it works perfectly, and left the finishing lining to the installer... but the finished article is what we are judged on so we designed our own timber jamb lining kit for the perfect professional finish that looks fantastic. We supply these with all our kits. Even the jamb kit is subject to our quality mantra, we use fingerjointed pine for long-term stability and cover this with a top quality real wood veneer. This is a light, mid-range veneer called cherry walnut that is left unfinished so it can be painted or stained to the desired finish and still retain that real wood feel. Q. Can your pocket door systems be used with fire doors? Absolutely, Eclisse has a fully approved pocket door system for use with 44 mm FD30 fire doors. Our standard steel

pocket system is strong enough even for fire approval and is used with our own design specially made high-density jamb kit. Q. And finally do you have a pocket door in your home? Yes! And so do most of the Eclisse staff because once you understand the advantages then there’s no going back to hinged doors, they just waste space when you can have an Eclisse system which works well, is top quality and guarantees your peace of mind. www.mclink.co.uk/869-552 ENQUIRY-Card 552

Rehau total 70 shows its versatility in parallel window application Demonstrating once again that the REHAU TOTAL70 truly is a ‘complete PVC-U system’, Devon based fabricator Interframe has for the first time manufactured innovative, parallel hinged sliding windows using only REHAU TOTAL70C chamfered profile. The windows, which were installed at the newly opened Steiner Academy in Exeter, were specified because they could provide almost twice the free air flow of standard top hung or casement windows and could deliver a greater number of air changes per hour. Compared with a casement window, a parallel window increases air flow all the way around so that fresh air is

impressed AHR on a previous new build school scheme in Devon and on this project they were closely supported by REHAU who worked with them to come up with a practical and cost effective window solution which could deliver the free air flow required in openings up to 2100mm high. A key benefit of parallel windows is that they don’t impact on the look of a building’s façade and maintain a consistent reflective view, with low G-value glass used to

reduce solar gain. At Steiner Academy, all of the 150 plus windows, doors and screens installed were also coloured in a contemporary looking smooth RAL 7016 grey foil. REHAU’s commercial sales manager Steve Tonkiss said: “Interframe were able to meet the exacting requirements of this project using our standard REHAU TOTAL70C profile. This was a huge advantage because it meant that they weren’t holding stock of additional profiles and, because of the

drawn in at the bottom and warm, stale air is expelled at the top. This creates full circulation of the air within the room and, at the same time, the balanced air flow around the entire opening reduces the potential for draughts. With levels of ventilation known to have a direct effect on concentration and learning in schools, natural ventilation is a key priority for many designers looking to go beyond the minimum requirements of the Building Regulations Part F (Ventilation). At Steiner Academy, the windows were specified by architects AHR Global in Bristol. Trade fabricator Interframe had

The through school, which accommodates more than 600 pupils from the ages of four to sixteen, is a state funded free school built on the 13 acre site of an old Exeter University Halls of Residence. The Grade II listed Thomas Hall building on the site has been refurbished and the new 4,707m² two storey building where the parallel windows have been installed has been constructed alongside. www.mclink.co.uk/869-553 ENQUIRY-Card 553

Global UPVC delivers the perfect remedy at Historic Hospital Site More than 700 high quality windows and doors were supplied and installed by Global UPVC at a prestigious development on the historic Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital site. The Beeches Village – an award winning scheme – was delivered by an innovative partnership of housing association United Welsh, Caerphilly County Borough Council, housing developer Lovell, the Welsh Health Service and the Caerphilly Miners Community Group. Completed in January 2015, it has created 82 homes for sale and for rent on the site. All homes have Legend casement windows and French doors from long-standing

local Synseal fabricator Global UPVC, whose Managing Director Jon Dowse credits much of the company’s ongoing success in the commercial market to the Legend system: “We use only Legend and have done for over ten years,” says Jon. “So many of our clients keep coming back and inviting us to bid for more work that we can hardly keep up with the tenders. To me, that is the best possible commendation I could hope for from any system. It’s a good looking window that performs well but also from our point of view, it is easy to manufacture. Our work is mainly in new-build but we do a bit of everything and Legend suits us whatever we are doing.”

Legend is one of three 70mm PVC-U window systems created by Synseal, along with the chamfered Shield and sculptured SynerJy with its innovative jform curves. Legend was first introduced to help installers gain a greater presence in the commercial sector, but has since also become a favourite in the retrofit market with a choice of chamfered or ovolo profiles. Brian Walker, Synseal’s Fabrication & Development Manager, comments: “I visited this site on a number of occasions during the build process and there has been a consistent high quality of frame manufacture and installation in all the homes throughout this landmark new housing project.” Built in 1923, The Miners’ Hospital was

paid for by the miners of the Rhymney Valley after they each put aside 6d out of their weekly wage of 12s 6d to raise the £30,000 needed. The Miners’ Hospital closed in 2011 with services transferred to the new Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr hospital in Ystrad Mynach. The redevelopment of the site has been shaped in close consultation with the local community. A key element of the scheme was the preservation of the original Miners’ Hospital building which has been retained and leased to the Caerphilly Miners Community Group for use as a community centre.

New Safety Locking Restrictor from ERA the best on the market

Shutting out the noise of the 24/7 society

Vicaima’s market growth prompt’s sales force expansion

Flush tilt-Turn window system creates design perfection

With record sales in 2014 and 2015 Vicaima has begun a programme of expansion for its regional representation in 2016. Phase one see’s the appointment of Stephen Pearce as their new Area Sales Manager for the central northern and midlands region, and bringing with him a wealth of experience from the door specification sector. Stephen, who was formally with door and doorset specialist Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw, has been involved with the construction industry for over 30 years. Much of that time has been spent specifically working within the doors and associated joinery sector, so he fully appreciates the high standards sought by our customers and is equipped to offer sound and professional advice.

Profile 22 has launched a unique externally Flush Tilt-Turn window system designed for commercial applications, especially medium and high rise buildings. The distinctive sleek, urban and modern design of its flush exterior frame avoids the overlapping of framework associated with conventional PVC-U systems, making it especially suitable for applications such as new-build apartments, housing hotels, offices, universities and colleges. The Profile 22 externally Flush Tilt-Turn can achieve A++ WER Rating (U-Value 0.8 W/m2.K, in line with Passivhaus standards) with argon-filled tripleglazed units, due to its energy efficient six-chamber sash and five-chamber outer frame as well as the inclusion of Profile 22’s innovative Aeroframe thermal barrier.

Once again, ERA has gone well beyond minimum standards to develop a universal Safety Locking Restrictor that offers Grade 3 impact resistance. Until now, families wanting to protect their children from open doors and windows have been limited to using standard locking devices, which fall short of the Grade 2 Impact Resistance minimum requirement for Child Safety. With its ‘push to open’ cable lock design, which comes with cut key locking for security, the Safety Locking Restrictor has been ergonomically developed for easy operation. Will Butler, group marketing and innovation director at ERA explains: “We were determined to offer a compliant child resistant locking device for windows and balcony doors in accordance with BS EN 16281:2013. www.mclink.co.uk/869-148 ENQUIRY-Card 148

In this 24/7 society, how do we relax when we encounter constant external noise? Selectaglaze secondary glazing is an efficient method of reducing background noise, helping create a more relaxing environment. Sound is transmitted through the primary window by a vibration of the glass, when adding secondary glazing it forms a cavity, which reduces resonance as well as providing a second barrier for the noise to travel through. The units have been tested to demonstrate that a sound level reduction of 45dB is possible. The results are achieved using high performance seals and an air gap between the windows of 100mm or more. Established in 1966 Selectaglaze is the leading specialist in secondary glazing. www.mclink.co.uk/869-149 ENQUIRY-Card 149

Cool solution for cold store construction One of the UK’s leading producers of quality savoury and sweet pastry products has completed a £7.3 million investment in a state-of-the-art packing and despatch facility which benefits from the in-built strength and insulation afforded by XPS (extruded polystyrene) from Sundolitt. McColgan Quality Foods has created 43 new jobs in Strabane, Northern Ireland by investing in the new facility designed to help meet a targeted 50% increase in export sales over the next three years. Achieving such success

relies on the importance of reliable and accurate temperature control helped by Sundolitt XPS - the cool secret buried in the floor of the new 8,000sq ft factory extension where it not only gives high thermal performance, it is

unaffected by freeze/thaw cycles and is also highly resistant to water absorption. Sundolitt supplied two grades of XPS for the project to enable the flooring to cope with the varying load requirements including point loading beneath each static foot of the fixed storage racking of 120kN/m2, whilst under the central concrete base carrying the picking rails, the company supplied Sundolitt XPS300 giving a 140kPA over the longterm pressure and a compressive modulus of elasticity of 12500kPA. continued Sundolitt XPS is manufactured in a wide range of thicknesses and sheet sizes, the primary range having a thermal conductivity of 0.033 – 0.037 W/mK (EN 13164). According to the type of use, it achieves outstanding compression resistance from 200 – 700 kPa (EN826) and offers exceptionally low moisture absorption through its closedpore system. This makes it a preferred solution in industrial floors such as cold stores and chilled warehouses as well as in a wide range of load-bearing construction applications with case studies at www.sundolitt.co.uk”

The main contractor was Woodvale Construction (www.woodvaleconstruction.co .uk) which was founded in Northern Ireland in 1980 and now operates throughout the UK. The company, which won a 2015 Sustainable Ireland Award, said that a key challenge was to ensure the project was completed without disruption to the existing food manufacturing facility. The project was designed by Mullarkey Pedersen Architects (www.mparchitects.net). Karl Pedersen said, “The creation of a modern food facility has its own challenges in terms of design and functionality. Every element and component of this building demanded our fullest consideration both creatively

and technically and we are very proud of the result”. Sundolitt XPS Sales Manager Bryan Mawer said, “In this type of food storage facility, XPS offers outstanding thermal insulation, strength and rigidity. It is also very easy to install, cut to fit on site and safe to use in a food approved environment. It comes in square or shiplap edge – the latter having the advantage of preventing thermal bridging and capillary action. For fast-track construction projects, our customers can be reassured that it is available ex stock from Sundolitt in the UK. www.mclink.co.uk/869-559 ENQUIRY-Card 559

Looking for a whitewashed floor? Bona White is a new wood floor primer designed to produce an on-trend bleached look when used in conjunction with a Bona polyurethane lacquer. The intensity of ‘whiteness’ is dependent on how many coats are applied. This client wanted a whitewashed look to their original Victorian floor boards to tie in with the soft greys of the kitchen. This was achieved by the application of two coats of Bona White under two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer. The works were part of a complete renovation of a Victorian town house in Bath and were carried out by Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath Ltd, who specialise in the restoration and fitting of traditional wood floors. Before treatment, the TWF team filled large gaps using reclaimed pine wedges and

then sanded the floor to 100 grit abrasives. Smaller gaps were filled using Bona Mix & Fill, which is mixed with sanding dust from the floor to ensure the filled areas blend in with the rest of the surface. The floor was then sanded using 120 grit abrasives before the application of the first coat of Bona White. The floor was then abraded using a Bona Scrad Pad to remove any grain raising from the surface before the application of the second coat. To produce a highly durable, easy to maintain finish, two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer were applied. Traffic HD is Bona’s toughest lacquer. The very

low VOC content and low odour mean there is no need for homeowners to vacate their property while the works are being carried out and there is no lingering smell. Its fast cure time means the floor can be in full use just 12 hours after treatment – making it an ideal choice for commercial floors too where there is little available downtime for renovation. TWF’s clients chose the Matt version of Traffic HD for their kitchen floor. Silkmatt and Extramatt sheens are also available. As a Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath is part of Bona’s network of highly trained wood floor specialists -

independent wood floor companies who have received extra in-depth training in the use of Bona’s wood floor finishing products. More information is available at bona.com

deep. Unlike other similar fillers on the market, Rapid Rescue is unique in containing Hydroloc™ technology. Hydroloc works by using the mix water as part of a chemical reaction to dry the filler, compared to traditional products that dry via water evaporation. This means that the product dries evenly, regardless of thickness, throughout in record time. After 20 minutes the product starts to begin its hardening process and can be easily cut or carved – perfect for repairing a missing piece of skirting board. Once dry and hard, Rapid Rescue can be sanded down, but you can also simply smooth it over with a damp sponge to achieve a perfect finish due to its superfine formulation. At any time in the UK, rain can stop play and on tennis hard courts the build-up of water can take some time to run away if attention has not been paid to the surface water drainage requirement. At Harrow School tennis courts this is not a problem as a discreet drainage channel run located just below the net efficiently drains away any excess rainwater. Over the years Hauraton have built up a fund of knowledge, second to none, of how to drain sports areas be they soccer grounds, athletic tracks or tennis courts. Other components in the SPORTFIX range include; Electrical distribution shafts, Service channels for cable management, pitch dish edging components and drainage channels specifically designed for artificial turf pitches. www.mclink.co.uk/869-572. Yeoman Rainguard Help Reduce Maintenance Costs at Local Rugby Club. Yeoman Rainguard Rainwater Systems were first choice when a local rugby club required an attractive yet durable system as part of the club house refurbishment plans. West Leeds RUFC were over the moon after a second attempt at applying for support from Sport England’s “Inspired Facilities” fund was rewarded with a £74,000 grant. “The awarded money was great news for the club.” Explained Club Chairman, Phil Christopher “With the original building built in 1974 and costing more time and money to maintain, the fund gave us the opportunity to refresh and replace certain elements of the building.” The refurbishment work was carried out by S & C Builders of Wortley (Leeds) who along with extensive alterations to the interior of the club house also made a dramatic change to the grounds and exterior. As well as new Aluminium windows and door sets, rendering, car park and patio resurfacing and disabled access a new durable and stylish

Aluminium rainwater system and fascia manufactured and supplied by Yeoman Rainguard was installed. 75mm dia. down pipes and 125 x 100mm MOG gutters from Yeoman Rainguard’s eco-friendly SL range were installed and complemented with a Motif and a specially fabricated rainwater hopper with a smooth finish in RAL 7016 – an Anthracite Grey Colour – exactly matching the windows and doors whilst offering a pleasing contrast to the rendering. The timber fascia to the Club House which is various sizes around the roof line has been clad in bespoke “L” shaped Aluminium Fascia manufactured at Yeoman Rainguard’s workshops, again in a matching Anthracite Grey “The whole refurbishment, including the fitting of a sustainable rainwater system will dramatically reduce maintenance costs and also, as the building has become less demanding maintenance wise, will save many hours of work by volunteers.” Concluded Phil. www.mclink.co.uk/869-575 For more information on

Polypipe makes sure of safety with new Ridgistorm-XL accessories range Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of sustainable drainage and water management products, is looking to further safeguard contractors and maintenance teams with the introduction of a new range of RIDGISTORMAccess Manhole accessories for its popular Ridgistorm-XL large diameter piping system. The range of manhole accessories includes Guardrail and Safety Chain Assemblies, both of which can be preinstalled into Polypipe’s range of Ridgistorm-XL manholes and chambers. Designed to prevent site workers from accidentally falling into outflow channels greater than 600mm in diameter, Polypipe’s new Guardrail Assembly acts as a vital safety barrier for RIDGISTORMAccess Manholes

and chambers greater than 900mm in diameter. For workers inside manholes, the Safety Chain Assembly acts as a lifeline to prevent workers being swept down outflow pipes. Offering a robust 3kN break strength, the Safety Chain Assembly is positioned across the outflow pipe at the end of the channel, offering a crucial point to grasp in the event of emergency. Along with the obvious health and safety benefits that both accessories offer, installation teams can also benefit from Polypipe’s ability to provide engineered solutions from the company’s dedicated manufacturing facility, with both accessories able to be prefabricated into chambers which are delivered to site as a onepiece modular unit ready for installation. The introduction of the new

range demonstrates Polypipe’s commitment to worker safety, and follows the introduction of the company’s Ridgistorm-XL Lifting Points. Designed to aid in the safe handling of Ridgistorm-XL chambers when loading, off-loading and

installing products on site, Ridgistorm-XL Lifting Points consist of three plastic lugs which are pre-welded by Polypipe’s in-house fabrications team to ensure the safe manoeuvring of manholes and chambers up to 2,500kg in weight. Speaking on the launch of the range, Emma Nicholls, Marketing Manager at Polypipe Civils, said: “Whilst we’re always keen to communicate the benefits that our Ridgistorm-XL system offer, particularly those that reduce time and labour costs for our customers, there can be nothing more important than the welfare of workers. As such we’re delighted to be adding two excellent products to our Ridgistorm-XL family that we’re sure will make our large diameter piping system even more popular.

“From our Ridgistorm-XL Lifting Points to our new manhole safety accessories, we’re able to offer reduced health and safety risks throughout the lifetime of our systems. Any time that a worker needs to access the system, such as during maintenance and inspection activities, we want them to feel confident that their safety has been a primary consideration.” The new Ridgistorm-XL Chamber Accessories are available for specification now. Luxury communal gardens for residents A stone’s throw from South Bank, BREEAM certified London Square development, Bermondsey Village, is located at the corner of Lamb Walk and Morocco Street. A mixed-use new build, the scheme provides luxury apartments with a communal garden area and balconies, which required a clever roofing solution from Sika Sarnafil, Sky Garden and Contour Roofing. The design of the building means of protecting a building reflects the eclectic and from the elements, but now it exciting architectural context is increasingly being seen as a of the surrounding area. The valuable space that can be modern style of the apartments utilised. The client needed a sustainable required a roofing solution that biodiverse, would look stunning and offer communal garden and roof as high performance. At one time, part of the project. a roof was once seen only as a The project was split into three

parts – the accessible green roof for residents on the first floor, then the green roof and brown roof at a higher level. These were chosen for their aesthetic values (as they could be seen from surrounding buildings) and to assist with the disposal of rainwater. The project was originally specified in hot melt. However, this product specification wasn’t possible, as it wouldn’t give the desired aesthetic finish required by the client and architect. The client wanted an ‘all singing, all dancing’ solution that would deliver superior performance and a flawless finish, in line with the luxury flats. Jonathan Woods, Contour Roofing, suggested using Sika products, as the roofing project was complex and expansive, requiring expert advice and planning. He explained that Sika give the best for support to both contractor and client, and would be the ideal option. It was a challenge to change the specification at a late stage, but Contour, working in close partnership with Sika, provided a solution that met, and exceeded, the client’s expectations. Work was done to cover the main roof, balconies and

podium over a car park using a full warm ballasted system with Sarnafil G410-18EL Light Grey as the main roof sheet and Sarnafil G410-15EL Light Grey and S327-15EL Light Grey for the flashings. The design of the communal gardens was intricate and detailed, especially around roof lights, podium and upstands. Sikalastic Liquid Applied Membrane was used on some of the detail areas and the balconies, demonstrating the great compatibility between Sika’s various roofing products. All work was finished to an extremely high standard, as was the aesthetic requirement of the client, achieving a 20 year guarantee from Sika. Sky Garden, the UK’s leading independent specialist company for green roofs and podium landscaping, worked with Contour and Sika, providing expert advice on biodiverse habitat creation and living roof design. Sky Garden provided technical support and

information for the hard and soft podium landscaping, biodiverse habitat creation and green roof requirements, to ensure the systems met all BREEAM ‘Very Good’ certification, planning and client requirements for the project. As a residential development, it was imperative for Sky Garden and Contour to complete the podium works to a very high standard so that new homeowners could move in to a welcoming ‘green’ environment, complete with amenity areas, communal seating, lawns, timber pergolas and established planting. Sky Garden worked closely throughout the project with partners at Contour Roofing, Sika and London Square, to ensure that the challenges of strict budget, tight programme and midLondon site with restricted access were all met successfully. www.mclink.co.uk/869-577

Breathing new life into an historic barn in the Cotswolds When Mr & Mrs Shackle purchased a listed cottage and outbuilding in the heart of the historic market town of Cirencester, they had very clear ideas of the high standard in which it was to be renovated. The Grade II Listed property, situated on an old Roman road, consisted of the main house and an old outbuilding. The smithy had been severely damaged by fire and the roof was rebuilt under the strict supervision of English Heritage and the local Conservation Officer, to ensure that the integrity of the building remained true to its historic past. After 12 months of renovation, both the house and barn are near completion and the Shackles have created a stunning new contemporary living space throughout. This is

particularly true of the old smithy, which now acts as the couple’s main living quarters. Clever use of light from what was a dark unwelcoming environment, has maximized every inch of space available and breathed new life into the beautiful old historic building. Mrs Shackle said: “Having given up my job as a project manager, to give this project my full attention, I have been able to source the right materials to achieve the desired look through meticulous research. It was extremely important for us to make sure all the materials

used were sympathetic to the character of the building, and we simply weren’t prepared to compromise on quality.” Following extensive research for the most suitable rooflights to match their high specifications and, of course, would be acceptable to the Conservation Department, the Shackles selected the Lumen Conservation Rooflight. This product, which authentically replicates a traditional Victorian design, is specifically designed for installation in period properties. With a low profile design and fine lines of steel the Lumen Conservation

rooflight blends beautifully with the modern day architectural look the Shackles were trying to create. Mrs Shackle said: “We have been particularly impressed with the design of the Lumen Conservation rooflight as it is unobtrusive and sympathetic to the external architecture of the building. Our Architect was particularly pleased with the design and it has been one of the more simplistic elements of an otherwise complex and complicated renovation.” Lumen rooflights also benefit from a high specification of glazing including Pilkington

Activ self-cleaning glass, a solid American Ash timber liner and a choice of solid brass winding mechanisms for the interior aspect. It is these quality touches that have really impressed the Shackles. Mrs Shackle said: “We have been so impressed with Lumen and their rooflight. It’s well made with a beautiful wood surround on the inside, which softens the look. It also has a slim line frame, which maximizes the light coming in and the custom made blinds give a smart, snug appearance. www.mclink.co.uk/869-579

Bumper year for Suffolk Rooflight Company as they raise the bar A Suffolk rooflight company are toasting an exceptional year in business which saw them become world leaders in their industry. Sunsquare, based in Bury St Edmunds, became the first company supplying and fitting flat roof skylights to be awarded the BSI Kitemark. The Kitemark, which is the world’s most recognisable mark of quality, has seen Sunsquare raise the bar for industry excellence in a previously unregulated sector. Justin Seldis, Director of Sunsquare, said: “Prior to our BSI Kitemark, the roof skylight industry has been completely unregulated. “I’m proud to say that we’ve changed the way the industry will have to operate in the future. A kitemark is the highest mark of quality so I would advise clients only to buy from companies whose product is recognised in this way.”

Leading experts highlight risk for residents in older apartment blocks Smoke ventilation in communal areas can make all the difference between life and death, and repair and rebuild. One of the country’s best known smoke ventilation manufacturers, Whitesales, is pressing to highlight the importance of sound fire safety design in flats, after a series of fires around the country revealed a historical lack of strategy. Smoke ventilation is one area where making the right decision can mean the difference between life and death, and repairing or rebuilding. That’s because smoke overpowers people before they have time to escape. In fact, smoke inhalation kills more people than the flames consuming the building. There are numerous causes of domestic fire, from arson through to the far more common: electrical faults, candles left unmonitored and kitchen incidents such as chip pan fires.
