Tradespeople still relying on traditional word of mouth and missing out on digital marketing A large majority of tradespeople are still using traditional methods of attracting customers, such as word of mouth, and are not recognising the potential of digital marketing, according to a new study. IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade, invited 10,000 tradespeople to take part in an annual study which examines the marketing habits of trade businesses across the UK. The research found that 92% of tradespeople are relying on word of mouth recommendations when it comes to boosting their business, and 60% of respondents still felt that this was the most effective way of bringing in new customers compared with other methods of marketing. The study did show, however, that a growing number of tradespeople are spotting the potential of having a good website (39%), but when it came to more technical methods of digital marketing, few were aware of how this could help their business. Only 7% thought that pay per click or search engine optimisation could help to raise awareness amongst potential customers and just 4% saw Twitter as a valuable tool for their marketing. Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said: “It’s great that tradespeople are still able to gain new business through the traditional marketing method of word of mouth, which clearly shows that they must have a good reputation amongst their customers. “However as we’re now living in a digital age, it’s important for tradespeople to recognise that more customers are moving online to find the services they require and spending an increasing amount of time on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. To help tradespeople wanting to learn how digital marketing can grow their business, IronmongeryDirect has created a downloadable guide with some basic tips and advice to support both novices and those already investing in digital marketing. Plus it includes information on how business owners can save hundreds of pounds on marketing activities.

LED Refit shines a spotlight All part of the service from Rehau REHAU is proud of the technical support on Howarth Timber

Hitachi Air Conditioning Europe SAS is continuing to grow its heating team with the recent appointment of Andy Henson in the role of Technical Engineer - Heating. Andy’s background covers both heating and cooling products having worked extensively with Hitachi air conditioning and refrigeration equipment in the past, before moving to NIBE Energy Systems as a service engineer, progressing through to training and site support roles. “Andy’s role includes training at Hitachi’s UK aircademy centres, onsite training and commissioning as well as remote and onsite technical support. Howarth Timber and Building Supplies’ branches across the country are being refitted with LED lighting after the company successfully secured funding from the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The Electricity Demand Reduction pilot scheme was established by the Government department in order to encourage businesses across the UK to reduce electricity consumption at peak times by providing funding for new installations or improvements to current facilities. Howarth Timber and Building Supplies was one of 18 successful bidders for funding from the pilot scheme. LED lighting is praised for its efficiency, with up to 90% less energy used when compared to incandescent lighting. There are 30 sites designated for refitting, with work having commenced at the beginning of 2015. ENQUIRY-Card 100

it offers to a broad range of customers and indeed believes it is one of the key areas where it differentiates itself from its competitors. It demonstrated this particularly well recently for a domestic customer who was looking to replace entrance door screens in his 1960s built Lanarkshire property. The customer was Robin Russell, a retired architect, who contacted REHAU’s Glasgow sales office to discuss replacing two rotting timber screens with low maintenance, energy efficient PVC-U alternatives. Robin had already put together a scheme based around his knowledge of REHAU and its systems but, when he met with REHAU’s commercial sales manager in Scotland Leila Robertson and technical applications engineer Paul Pell, they were able to propose a simplified, more cost effective solution which would still meet his requirements. There is now far greater awareness of the general principles of conservation and the need for minimal intervention, maximum retention of the original building fabric and preservation of the building’s original aesthetics and appearance. Phrases like ‘conserve as found’ and ‘minimum loss of authenticity’ set conservation works apart from standard repair and maintenance. At Helifix this is nothing new as these were the very principles on which the company was founded more than 30 years ago and which have guided its development ever since. Helifix designed the first one-piece helical remedial wall tie, which has since formed the basis of its extremely successful range of special purpose stainless steel ties, fixings and reinforcement systems that now repair, strengthen and preserve masonry structures worldwide. Being slim, versatile, lightweight and flexible they are non-intrusive.

One of the worst areas of heat loss through a thermal bridge is where the floor meets the wall. Up to 30% of heat, in a well-insulated room, can be lost this way. Thermoblock prevents that heat loss. ENQUIRY-Card 506

Mapei uses superior silicone coating system to help restore 13th century castle

Prior to installation of the system, the weathered external masonry walls were cleaned and a silicone primer was applied to the original substrate. The Mapei system offers a one-stop shop system approach to façade repair with all materials being available from a single source. Approximately 800m2 of Silancolor Cleaner Plus, a protective, water-based cleaning product was used to clean the surface, as the previous coating and mortar were damaged due to coastal Mapei’s Silancolor Paint system has been used to restore weather from the estuary Benton’s 13th Century castle, in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. below, moss in the mortar and The system was installed as part of a refurbishment to help an algae infestation on the protect the external stone-built surface. Altro Flexiflow works from dramatic Brighton Office Space Innovative Altro FlexiflowTM resin flooring is providing a practical yet visually appealing solution to a challenging space in one of Brighton’s most unusual and striking office buildings. Built in the 1980s, Sovereign House has recently undergone extensive refurbishment, and has been transformed into a dramatic, modern space with a spectacular glazed atrium at the heart of building. Ben Adams Architects was tasked with creating the new look. Architect Julia Hamson explains: “Our brief was to redesign the front facade and reception of the building to create a more welcoming and dramatic entrance, and to provide a new office infill within the existing oversized and underused atrium. “The infill features full-height glazing and a top-floor mezzanine office space, complete with balconies to look down on the atria below. The installation adds a new ambience to the communal spaces, maximising light into the reception and accentuating the new finishes and clean detailing. Julia Hamson continues: “Specifying flooring for the reception and ground floor atrium was a challenge, because the entrance comes in on a diagonal. This unusual space meant that floor tiles wouldn’t have worked.

“We needed a solid, high quality, visually appealing surface that was flexible enough to go down on the existing substrate, without cracking or bending with any structural subfloor movement. “In addition, we wanted flooring that could stand the test of time. Sovereign House is a busy office building, with 800

people walking in and out every day. So we needed something that could tolerate heavy use, and stay looking fresh, long term. “Altro Flexiflow was the ideal solution for this project. It’s tough, flexible, and can withstand the kind of movement that other resin floors cannot. It’s designed to recover from scuffs and knocks, so it’s perfect for the day-to-day wear and tear of high traffic areas. “In addition it’s visually appealing - in keeping with a striking, modern building - with a smooth, matt finish, and a great choice of colours. We selected a light grey, called Doe, to complement the surroundings.” Altro Flexiflow is an elastomeric polyurethane self-smoothing, flowapplied flooring, which offers high

structural resilience, flexibility, toughness and durability. The product boasts good indentation recovery and high impact resistance, which is ideal for protecting a wide range of environments. Altro Flexiflow is available in three options - Standard (which was used at Sovereign House), Comfort, for increased comfort underfoot, and Acoustic, which satisfies the requirement E4 of Building Regulations and BB93 acoustic design of schools. The product is available in 28 standard pastel, solid and bright colours, with the option of bespoke shades, giving complete design freedom. There is minimal requirement for joints, and because the product is self-levelling, the result is a seamless and uniform finish with uninterrupted lines. ENQUIRY-Card 513

Fail-safe flooring with Dunlop

ProCover Uncoupling Mat Discovering cracks in a new tiling installation is a tradesman’s worst nightmare, which is why Dunlop has launched the innovative ProCover Uncoupling Mat system providing complete protection against failures. ProCover gives tradesman the confidence to tile onto difficult floors at risk from stresses and lateral movement by acting as a flexible buffer layer between tile and floor, protecting against the different rates of contraction and expansion experienced by the floor and tile layer depending on moisture and temperature. This is a particular problem for floors such as new sand and cement screeds, underfloor heating and timber floors which have previously required overlaying with plywood. Without an uncoupling mat, tiles can crack and de-bond as the background moves, potentially costing time and money in repair and recompense. ProCover is easy to install, comes in handy five metre rolls, and has premarked grid-lines for effortless cutting. It can also be butt-jointed with no overlap, meaning no tape is needed.

Furthermore, this innovative product is only 1mm thick and super-slim, preventing excessive height build-up, and comes with a unique 10 year guarantee when used as part of a suitable system of Dunlop tile adhesive and grout.

Debi Boulton, Sales & Marketing Manager at Dunlop, said: “By using the ProCover Uncoupling Mat, tradesman can tile onto difficult surfaces in confidence, safe in the knowledge that the system will protect against unwanted movement, stresses and strains that could cause disastrous failures. “So why not throw away your plywood overlays and try ProCover today.” For more information visit ENQUIRY-Card 514

Isosonic Dek Floor 30 is a new prime addition to the Thermal Economics. IsoSonic product range. The board component ISOSONIC DEK30 forms a combined sound insulation and structural deck, applied directly to the floor joists. It is composed of the 8 mm Isorubber resilient layer bonded to V313 chipboard . ISORUBBER itself is a dense ( 910 kg/m2), durable, low compression material with excellent impact and airborne sound properties. It forms the main acoustic component of six Robust Details. The main benefits of Isorubber over expanded polymer foams are • It’s mass, which reduces airborne sound transmission • It’s hardness, which eliminates compression ( loss of resilience ) at the board to joist interface; which can cause “floor bouncingâ€? and increased impact sound transmission. • It’s durability , which assures undiminished long term performance The system is designed to reduce flanking sound leakage around the floor perimeter; a frequent problem in refurbishment work and it employs the Isosonic Ceiling Cleat vibration absorbing hangers to facilitate a more effective acoustic decoupling from floor to ceiling than resilient bars; which are prone to fixing problems. The Isosonic DekFloor 30 system has been both laboratory and site tested for compliance with approved Document E ( Refurbishment) requirements.

GOVT policy looks to recognise benefits of traditional fuels Tony Gittings of Rinnai believes that the Government has opened up more opportunities for the industry to effect energy efficiencies and subsequently decarbonise. this subject. The Queen’s Speech at the opening of the current session of Parliament in May made it clear that over the coming decades we will need oil and gas as part of our energy mix. Rudd said comments: “The Queen’s Speech set out our early priorities for the new Parliament. DECC’s priorities are clear: keeping the lights on and powering the economy; keeping bills low for families and businesses and getting a climate deal in Paris this year.

“That includes maximising home grown energy sources rather than relying on imports and benefitting working people in Britain. The new Energy Bill will boost the UK oil and gas industry by creating an independent regulator for exploration and production from the territorial sea and UK continental shelf. This new approach to industry collaboration (which fully implements last year’s independent Wood Review) will help drive down costs and

improve the sector’s efficiency”. This makes absolute sense as we focus on what we can do to decarbonise the UK building stock to support energy and emission target reductions by using the best available technologies today and not waiting for a ‘magic box’ solution that will enable all renewables to work perfectly and unassisted tomorrow. With the acknowledgement that fossil fuels continue to have their part to play we now

as an industry have the encouragement we need to continue to explore ways of using renewables technology, be it solar thermal, solar PV or heat pump, in a practical manner maximised by traditional fuel sources such as gas to power high efficiency units as we go forward. fired water heater manufacturer, launches its latest innovation, the Infinity Solo Re-Circulator water heater with storage combined. The Infinity Solo range of condensing and condensing low NOX water heaters is the first Rinnai product for the UK to combine the advanced technology of its wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one. “The preceived necessity for storage type water heating systems is often derived from historical plant room and service deficiencies, for instance gas meter sizes often dictate technology selection in domestic and light commercial applications. Certain legislations are harnessing a like-for-like replacement environment. Therefore Rinnai has developed this technology to enable the appliances to fulfil a wider market need, allowing the benefits of our technology to be felt by a wider audience,” says Associate Director Chris Goggin.

RINNAI SCORES TOPS WITH WELSH RUGBY Rinnai helped CST Renewables Ltd put Maesteg RFC’s hot water provision in the premier league with a conversion using its latest Infinity low NOx heavy duty condensing units. Long time Maesteg supporter, sponsor and current player for the 130-year-old club, Mark Hiller-Rees of Bridgend-based CST Renewables Ltd explained how CST and Rinnai managed to stave the opposition to score with the club, “The project entailed replacing the ancient stored hot water system serving the showers, changing rooms and toilet facilities. I originally ordered two Infinity HDC 1500 units but Rinnai’s latest low NoX HDC 1600 heater with 107% efficiencies had just become available so we put in two of them plus a 300 litre buffer vessel.

“The system now runs on boosted pressure (cold water boosters) which is controlled by a pressure-reducing valve set at an operating pressure of 1.0 bar. The mains water feeds the existing cold outlets and the pressure boosting units and the slave tank, which between them store a combined 600 litres of water. The hot water is heated by the two Rinnai units with 300 litres of stored hot water by way of a direct heated buffer vessel, protected by two Scale Master units. “The temperature is modulated and controlled by the internal CPUs on the Rinnai units. A separate controller to alter the temperature settings can also be used. The heating system is made up of a mild steel construction utilising eight double panel radiators for heat transfer.”

Hillier-Rees explains how the whole system is controlled by a main control panel which has two wireless relays incorporated. “These relays have wireless programmers one for hot water one for heating. These are seven-day programmable units and will control the hot water and heating when all control switches are turned to on. There is fire, gas and mechanical safety isolation incorporated into the system. The fire and gas are automatically operated devices whereas the mechanical cut off is by means of an emergency stop located on the side of the control panel. I designed and constructed the control panel myself,” says Hillier-Rees. “I used domestic controls so that whoever is responsible for turning on the system has just one switch to operate, unlike with the old boiler which

those proposed by ERP. The Infinity HDC 1600 renewablesready low NOx series is the first heater of its kind to utilise premix burner technology. The newly developed down-firing burner allows increased efficiency and reduces NOx gases. The revolutionary burner has a 13-1 turn down ratio – the largest on the market – of 58.4kw-4.5kw and is ultra quiet in operation – so quiet that you wouldn’t know it was running unless you glance at the number on the display.

involved a lot fiddling with the controls to get it going and they hated it. Now the water is hot in just 10-15 minutes whereas before it would be an hour before the showers were up to temperature. They love The Infinity 1600 KBM low NOx series is available with an output the new system! of 58.4 kw producing 16.7 litres “This Rinnai system has major of temperature controlled hot advantages over the old vented water per minute (or 9.73 per system heating indirectly via a hour) raised at 50°C. coil – now you just use it! It is a much cheaper option and the club will see the difference in reduced running costs. Rinnai’s new state-of-the-art premium Infinity HDC 1600 internal condensing water heater has been tested to below 20 ppm NOx, with 107%* gross efficiencies. Returning figures such as these, specifiers, installers and end users can be assured that the units are future proofed against any lower NOx regulations like ENQUIRY-Card 524 ENQUIRY-Card 525

New Crown Trade Fastflow Gloss System Sets The Pace For Decorators - Both Inside and Out The results achieved by decorators testing Crown Trade’s new water-based Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss led to calls for the product to be rolled out into full production as soon as possible! From first impressions on opening the tin, through to the application process and a review of the finished look - Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss has got the thumbs-up from professionals trialling it out on site. Now the wait is over, with Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss - complemented by Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Primer Undercoat - on sale across the UK. Crown Paints has invested heavily in research and development to ensure this new product offers the trade the right paint for the job for both indoor and outdoor use – and sets the pace for the future in terms of style, speed, substance and sustainability. As a result, significant advances have been made in alkyd emulsion technology that

ensure excellent coverage and opacity, exceptional flow - and fast-track drying times which enable two coats to be applied in just one day. Once applied, Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss leaves a stunning, high gloss finish to a standard normally associated with solvent borne paints, and a crisp, white shade that will last for the long term. Nikki Cosgrove, Crown Trade Brand Manager, said: “Reports from the decorators carrying out the trials were outstanding throughout the whole process. “Initial thoughts from the testers opening the tin were that looked like a full-bodied product, with no sign of skin or separations.

“They felt Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Primer Undercoat flowed well from brush to substrate, with real covering power. “The application of Crown Trade Fastflow Gloss was also well-received, with the product being described as having a nice, thick feel, which flowed well and offered a bright white finish. “What was very pleasing was the description from the decorators that it felt like applying an oil-based product, which flowed extremely well over the top of the first coat, with no dragging or pulling, and that it dried very quickly to leave a traditional oil-based wet look. “Finally, once the application was complete the Crown Trade system was compared with other completed areas on site and the test team felt it gave a much

better finish, with a higher sheen level. “The overall view was that they were really happy and would like to see Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss rolled out into production as soon as possible.” By using Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss just one product can be purchased for both interior and exterior environments and its speed of application enables project times to be sped-up and labour times to be managed. A variety of pack sizes are also being produced to meet different project requirements.

Ecopro in a ‘world first’

Earthborn's Ecopro emulsion was the natural choice for the world’s first terrace of load bearing straw holiday cottages, at Elmfield Farm near Canterbury, Kent. The walls are made from 746 bales of straw harvested locally and the internal clay render was all hand made from clay excavated on site.

Owner Harriet Wishart commented: “It was vitally important to have a highly breathable paint to work together with the breathable straw walls and clay plaster to naturally regulate the humidity of the internal environment. Everyone we spoke to recommended Earthborn. Its Ecopro emulsion is extremely breathable, looks great and gives a hard wearing finish. We only needed the primer and two coats, even to cover the strong orange of our clay render with the

cream shade that we chose.” With its Ecolabel approval, Ecopro Matt Emulsion is an easy to use, environmentally sound alternative to conventional emulsions. Its unique formulation is totally oil, acrylic and VOC free, yet it offers high performance and excellent covering properties. The result is a durable, anti-static, matt finish that is highly breathable. Being free from all harmful emissions and odours, Ecopro Matt Emulsion also helps create a healthier, more comfortable environment for holidaymakers staying in the cottages. ENQUIRY-Card 533

MODERN, DESIGNER HOMES WITH SMART RENDER FINISH High performance monocouche render by Saint-Gobain Weber has been specified by Cotswold Homes Limited, Gloucester, for an exclusive new-build development in Cheltenham.

Consisting of 11 contemporarystyle three and four bedroom homes designed to provide maximum space and natural light, each has a practical openplan ground floor layout where families can cook, eat and relax together. These modern, energy efficient two and three storey properties are finished externally with weber.pral M monocouche render in Chalk and which blends perfectly with the local streetscene in this popular area. Mark Pickthall, M P Plastering, Burnham-on-Sea, Bristol, specified the use of weber.pral M for Cotswold Homes. “We have successfully used Weber renders for many years. They are userfriendly, totally reliable and, above all, convenient. Cotswold worked to a similar design to that of their boutique Horizon development in the Somerset town of Clevedon, which was highly popular and sold very quickly, and it made sense to use a similar combination of design

and materials.” weber.pral M is BBA approved and offers the multiple benefits of pump application and through-colour One Coat Technology which are recognised for their contribution to minimising programme works. By reducing the drying time by as much as 50%, when compared with a traditional two-coat system, on-site labour is dramatically reduced contributing to project efficiencies and faster completion. “The location proved to be a challenge in a restricted residential area,” continues Mark Pickthall, “so speed was of prime importance. weber.pral M is quick and easy to apply and spray application ensured we kept ahead of programme targets over a tight build schedule.” A traditional ashlar detail has been added providing an attractive decorative finish. Facades rendered with weber.pral M can provide the designer with a blank canvas onto which period architecture or modern geometric design can be introduced without the need for expensive special stonework. Saint-Gobain Weber is the first manufacturer of monocouche renders to be awarded an A+ rating as defined in the BRE Global 2008 Green Guide to Specification. This audited material helps specifiers to make selections that will collectively reduce the environmental

Energy Saving Refurbishment with Remmers iQ Therm System

MGC Stain Block

The listed 19th Century former Schoolhouse overlooking the Dublin mountains was renovated and extended to create a new energy efficient residential family home. So that the exterior facade of the existing property was not altered in any way, internal insulation was installed to the interior of the stone walls of the original house. Due to the build up of condensation behind conventional insulation when applied to single leaf construction, it became apparent that a “breathable insulation system” would be required. Remmers IQ Therm was chosen as it has the highest level of insulation for given thickness of breathable systems. The original U-value of the wall was approx 3.3W/m2K and was improved to 0.33W/m2K. Remmers IQ Therm is a complete system of fixing/insulation and finishing available in 3 board thicknesses.

Wetherby’s EpsiBrick-7 is a new 7mm brick slip system that offers the appearance of real brick, without the high costs and lengthy installation times associated with traditional brick builds. Unlike alternative brick slip systems available, which often comprise an acrylic brick finish, the EpsiBrick-7 product is manufactured and fired in the same way as traditional clay bricks, providing a genuine brick finish. Unlike Wetherby’s 15mm brick slip system, the BBA Approved Wetherby EpsiBrick-7 Brick Slip System does not require the use of galvanised steel mesh. Instead, the brick slips are applied directly onto the base coat, significantly reducing installation costs. It is available in 13 different colours. Marshalls delivers, with 15,000 linear metres of drainage to upgrade M1 Marshalls has supplied 15,000 linear metres of its Mono Beany one-piece combined kerb and drainage to the new M1 ‘smart motorway’ scheme, stretching over nine miles of highway.

The innovative one-piece design significantly reduces installation time, and on the M1 scheme ensured the contractor Costain was able to install 340 linear metres per day, surpassing its initial target of 240 metres. Mono Beany is manufactured using ultra-tough M-Tech concrete and comes in one metre units which allows for a single mechanical lift. Each unit can carry up to 40 tonnes (Class D400) when trafficked which minimises haunching and reduces installation costs, while helping contractors to meet deadlines and keep works disruption to a minimum. Marshalls also developed a bespoke transition unit for the scheme as part of the Highways Agency’s focus on innovation. The transition unit allows the scheme to meet the required

hydraulic rates and came within budget without the runs being over-engineered. The unit now forms part of Marshalls’ standard linear drainage offer. Alice Couldwell, Linear Drainage Product Manager at Marshalls said: “At Marshalls we recognise that there is a growing demand for cost-effective and uncomplicated drainage systems which has led to modern linear drainage becoming the preferred choice amongst specifiers and contractors for improving highways. “We provide a suite of water management products, including linear drainage with the innovative Beany range, and the UK’s leading Priora permeable paving, so you can have a complete water management solution for your project. “Our Beany range combines the clearcut advantages of combined kerb and drainage systems, with the benefits of a high quality, robust concrete which provides a number of competitive advantages.” Malcolm Bell from Costain said: “Due to how quickly we were able to install the innovative Mono Beany system there was an increased demand on deliveries to site. Marshalls offered a reliable and guaranteed supply throughout the project, delivering three to four loads per week direct-to-site, often delivering two loads per day. This helped to ensure we met our completion deadlines. ENQUIRY-Card 556

TERRAM launches enhanced GEOCELL range TERRAM, the leading geosynthetics brand, has enhanced its GEOCELL range, launching a new pre-design software tool to aid users in selecting the correct product for erosion control and retaining walls. Entering application information into the userfriendly pre-design tool will define the product code and the pin density needed to ensure a stable structure or the correct product to build a retaining wall. TERRAM GEOCELL is a 3D cellular confinement solution ideal for use in construction and civil engineering projects for erosion control, soil stabilisation on flat ground and slopes, load platforms, tree root protection, channel protection, and

structural reinforcement for load support and earth retention. The innovative solution is suitable for multiple applications, including the construction of highways, railways, landfills, pipelines and in landscape engineering, allowing for the free flow of water, reducing project costs and minimising the impact on the environment. TERRAM GEOCELL products not only ensure construction projects can blend into the surrounding environment with minimal ecological impact, they can be integral in maximising stability, with the supported vegetation cover acting as a natural anchor, protecting surfaces from weather erosion. Manufactured from permeable geotextile fabric, TERRAM GEOCELL products allow for the passage of airflow and water to provide essential nutrients to roots, preventing root rot - making them ideal for Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS). Supplied as flat pack panels, which are expanded on site to form a honeycomb-like structure, products can be filled with local compactable infill such as sand, soil, rock or other

site material, reducing transport and installation costs, as well as the impact on the environment. Flexibility and strength eliminate the potential for cracking, spalling, splintering and corrosion commonly seen in concrete, steel and timber systems. A cost-effective alternative to conventional earth retention structures, the TERRAM GEOCELL range is lightweight and easy to handle, as it can be easily cut to size on site reducing costs further still. It is adaptable to terrain and can be formed around trees and other obstacles. “The new pre-design software will assist engineers by giving fast, specific information regarding the suitability of our products,” Russell Thomas, technical sales manager TERRAM, comments. “We believe that this new software, combined with the versatility, strength and cost effectiveness of the permeable and lightweight range, will influence more users of TERRAM GEOCELL’S advantages and continue to strengthen our market presence.” ENQUIRY-Card 557

The Kemperol V210 was then applied to the roof in a single process involving the waterproofing membrane, followed by a 165g flexible reinforcement fleece and

IKO on BBC’s DIY SOS for 2nd time Quality and choice – Last year IKO PLC contributed to an the keys to success episode of the BBC’s DIY SOS – and got the taste for helping! Now IKO has contributed to another episode in this year’s series. The programme is currently going out on BBC1. The project in Dartford was the biggest build ever on an individual house, designed to provide suitable living space for Charlie, a teenager with severe disabilities. Despite the dedicated efforts of his parents and brothers it looked as though Charlie would have to be moved from the family home into care as the two-up, two-down end-of-terrace home was unsuitable for the daily care he needed. IKO provided several rolls of its Rubershield breather membrane for the roof of the house. DIY SOS, with the help of dozens of local tradesmen and suppliers, rebuilt the whole of the downstairs and remodelled the rest of the house to provide a significantly better living environment so Charlie could stay at home with his family.

When it comes to windows, doors and conservatories, installers need to offer customers a variety of choice in order to meet their budget, needs, fashions, trends and aspirations. In order to achieve this, installers would normally have to work with a variety of suppliers which can often be bewildering and time consuming. However, by working with one-stop-shop suppliers like SIG Windows - who have already sourced the most competitively priced quality products - installers can provide a clearly defined and comprehensive range from a variety of fabricators that is backed by sound and impartial advice too. Rather than being beholden to just one brand, installers can deliver the right product range, for the right job, and for the right budget. Sarah McCartney, Marketing Manager at SIG Building Plastics explains: “Choice really does matter, but so too does the quality of products. SIG Windows’ QC scheme, for instance, offers complete peace of mind for customers by ensuring that the quality of the glass and frame are in perfect condition prior to dispatch. Self Build Project Showcases flexibility of Marley Eternits New clay interlocking single pantile The owner of a one off new build home in Lincolnshire has used a new clay interlocking single pantile from Marley Eternit to provide the fixing flexibility needed for the complex roof design, as well as to blend in with the adjacent traditional clay roof. When Carl Pickard decided to build a new home for his daughter on land next to his own property in North Somercotes, Louth, one of his priorities was ensuring the new roof matched the

traditional clay pantiles of the existing house. He chose to use the new Melodie clay interlocking pantile from Marley Eternit after viewing samples at his local builders merchant. Carl Pickard, comments: “Although we needed the look of a traditional clay pantile, ease of fitting was also very important with such a complicated roof design, consisting of three big dormer windows, Dutch barn hips as well as hips for a porch. We chose the Melodie tiles because they give a traditional appearance but with the high coverage and easy to fix benefits of a flexible headlap and they offer very good value for money. We also used the Universal Hipfast and Ridgefast dry fix systems to help make fitting quicker and more secure.” It was the first time that roofing contractors J A Burton had used the new Melodie tile and found that its variable gauge meant it was far more flexible than others on the market. Roofer Jack Burton explains: “I was really impressed with the ease of fit and technical performance of the tiles and will definitely be using them again. It’s rare to find clay tiles like this with a variable gauge and particularly with such flexibility. The ones that I have used in the past only allowed me to move the gauge 6 to 7mm, whereas the Melodie gives 34mm variability. This does save time and makes complicated roofs like this one, easier to fix.”

OSB now the dominant board product for roofs

Timber cladding used for new care home

Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is gaining rapidly in popularity in the building industry, thanks to its strength, durability, low cost and sustainability. A recent study by Circle Research for Norbord has found that 44% of builders and specifiers regularly choose OSB for roof decking and roof sheathing – applications previously dominated by traditional plywood. At up to 45.2% cheaper than softwood ply, Norbord’s SterlingOSB is increasingly seen as the smart choice for such applications, where strength and durability are important. According to the research, plywood today is mostly used in the building trade for boxing-in (48%) and for flooring (44%). Significantly, though, respondents acknowledged that OSB is just as capable at plywood for these applications. Norbord’s SterlingOSB is made in Scotland from home-grown timber and is one of the most sustainable wood-based products available.

Their sophisticated oil treatment protects the timber by inhibiting moisture pick-up. The Canjaere Classic range combines the beauty of natural wood with preserved, pre-finished characteristics. Layher equipment, says the company, directly answered many of the specific questions raised at the site. “The temporary roof has been constructed to provide protection whilst the existing lead work – some dating back 150 years – is removed for remelting and replacement,” says David Blencowe, Director of Blencowe Scaffolding. “The cathedral’s own roof has an incline of 60° which is accommodated by our building the Layher structure in a series of stepped lifts. In turn, this supports runners for the translucent Keder roofing sheets which were pulled into position over the apex to create a comprehensive weather-proof cover.” The lightweight design of the Layher system contributed significantly to the handling and positioning process while its wide-bay design meant that the need to keep ties to an absolute minimum was addressed as efficiently as possible. “The roof is located on Layher support scaffolding with ties, where possible, only located after close consultation with the stonemasons,” adds David Blencowe. “Dating back to the ninth century,

today, the layout of Winchester Cathedral exhibits few truly straight lines or square corners,” says Ian Bartlett, Construction Manager at the cathedral. “Blencowe Scaffolding’s view that this would not present problems to the roofing design was fully realised by the use of the Layher system with the speed with which it was erected throughout the cathedral making a major contribution to the programme’s scheduling. This has been of particular importance as we need to maintain full public access and use throughout the refurbishment period.” Ian Bartlett also draws attention to the in-built rosette connector system which is at the heart of the Layher Allround design. This means there are no separate fittings and thus the risk of material accidently falling from height is significantly minimised. “This is both a public safety and building fabric issue,” he adds. The Layher temporary roof framework was fully constructed in the graveyard alongside the cathedral and then craned into position in four lift operations. “The precision of the ground level build was critical,” says Sean Pike, UK Managing Director of Layher Ltd, “as the structure had to match the irregularities of such an old building.” The lifting event itself proved something of an attraction for the local population and regional news teams, who turned out in numbers to witness this rarely seen event. “This is clearly an internationally important and iconic structure and one which presents all the

challenges that one would expect from a building dating back so far in history,” adds Sean Pike. “We believe it is a testimony to our temporary roofing system and also to the skills of the Blencowe Scaffolding installation teams that the quality of the resultant roof protection is so high – matching, indeed, the excellent Layher access scaffolding that has been installed in other key parts of the cathedral for the further restoration work which is now underway. “Perhaps the only thing that is just as impressive,” he adds, “is the skill of the workmen who originally built Winchester Cathedral all those years ago.” ENQUIRY-Card 569

The total refurbishment of 64 guest bathrooms within a club that has educational links, located on one of London’s most fashionable garden squares, has featured the use of Multiboards, manufactured by Marmox Limited to offer an ideal backing board for wetroom environments. The Goodenough Club in Bloomsbury offers 4 star accommodation in five linked historic townhouses, close by the British Museum and the Eurotunnel terminus at St. Pancras. The work at the Club has been carried out by Oakside Construction, a London based specialist contractor. Established in 1992, the company specialises in the fit out of wet areas and other interior spaces, as well as general refurbishment work. Crucially, Oakside’s long experience and director led project strategy enabled it to respond fully for the client’s brief for the rapid refitting of the bathrooms to minimise disruption to the club’s guests and other business activities. Employing the Marmox Multiboards in two different sizes helped speed the work,

while ensuring accuracy, together with long term performance. In total Marmox supplied some 1000 square metres of Multiboard in the 2500 x 600 (Longboard) and 1250 x 600 (Standard board) options; at 12.5 and 6mm thickness respectively. The upgrade of the en-suite bathrooms within the Goodenough Club was completed over a 19 week period earlier this year with a total contact value of close to £1 million. The Project Director for Oakside Construction, Mr. Andy Stratford, commented: “The work we are doing involves refitting all of the ensuite shower areas and in some cases creating new ones. Enclosures are typically framed out and boarded with plywood, before the Marmox Multiboards – in the different thicknesses depending on the build-up are fixed and taped to provide a waterproof substrate.” ENQUIRY-Card 574

Quick & easy fit with Garador Steel Frames

Doors & Windows 53

Perfect fit, quickest time – Garador’s precision engineered steel frames provide the best possible solution for fitting garage doors. Purchasing a Garador Up & Over garage door with a steel frame makes the installation quicker, as you simply need to fit the frame straight to the brickwork with as little as 7 fixings for a canopy gear door and 11 fixings for a retractable gear door. The frame can be fitted either between or behind the opening. As with all Garador products, the steel frame and garage door have been developed with longevity in mind. The use of a Garador steel frame which is galvanised to protect against rust, eliminates the need for a timber sub-frame, which will often warp or rot over time. “Without doubt, Garador steel frames offer the fastest and most accurate way to fit a garage door,” said Garador’s managing director Simon Hipgrave. “Thanks to their quick and easy fit, they also help installers and are a great option for homeowners looking for a door that is precisely

fitted with care and attention. The steel frame also results in a more accurate installation, without the need to fill in any unsightly gaps with strips of PVC as is often the case with a timber sub-frame. In addition, the steel frame is supplied factory painted to exactly match the colour of your Up & Over garage door, with no additional painting required. Simon continues “Along with the rest of our Up & Over doors, steel frames are also made right here in our UK plant to help ensure we offer the very best door at good prices with easy delivery.” Find out more about Garador’s steel frames at or call 01935 443710. The village's residents obtained a government loan to buy the pub when it came up for sale in 2013, fearing the loss of an important part of their community. “It was clear to see the pride that local people had in the pub”, explains Northfield Glass' Managing Director, Fred Atkinson. “It was very important to the Parish Council that the replacement windows were stylistically true to a building of its era and that the original grey colour of the old timber frames was maintained. “Everyone was impressed with VEKA's Fully Sculptured casement and Vertical Sliding windows. An open & shut case for in situ testing Door hardware specialist HOPPE UK is urging ironmongers, contractors and architects to fully consider the real-life door conditions before specifying door closers. HOPPE UK’s Jason Tonks explains: There are many closers on the market which have been successfully tested to BS 8300 with full third party accreditation but which, when fitted in a real life application, simply do not work effectively. These tests are carried out in controlled “laboratory” conditions with no seals, steady air pressure, appropriate hinges etc. So that when it is fitted on a real door, its performance may not truly reflect the test evidence. AS well as these factors, there are other factors on site which can affect the operation of a door not least of which is fitting, not to mention the weight and, critically, the width of the door. Steel windows bring industrial Two new products enhance style to domestic extension Schueco’s sliding door offering Keen to extend their house in Wandsworth, South West London, to create a large, light filled family kitchen and dining area opening directly onto the garden, Simon and Marissa Pilkington used a screen of steel windows and doors to provide a strong industrial aesthetic. To manufacture and install the windows, they chose Steel Window Association member, Steel Window Service and Supplies. When the Pilkingtons, who have three children, bought the 1900s semidetached property, they could see the potential despite the small galley style kitchen at the back of the house. They decided to knock this down and build out into the large rear garden with a single-storey extension. Despite wanting a connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces, they were keen not to have bifold doors and, having looked at the different options, realised that a screen of steel windows and doors was the perfect solution. New from leading sustainable building envelope specialist, Schueco UK, are two products, SmartClose and SmartStop, that underline Schueco’s commitment to innovation, operational safety and engineering excellence. Developed for use with Schueco’s range of sliding door systems, both products make the sliding vent easier to operate. SmartClose makes the closing action effortless by converting the energy generated by the initial pull on the sliding vent into momentum that carries the vent smoothly along the length of its track until its final soft insertion into the frame. The action is similar to the soft-closing doors and drawers found in many contemporary kitchens. In addition, Schueco SmartClose makes closing the door quieter and safer and also obviates the possibility of damage to the frame by the vent being slammed shut. ENQUIRY-Card 141

Floor to ceiling sliding doors and shutters are increasingly popular in residential homes and all commercial sites such as offices or retail fit-outs need an in-built creativity and flexibility for the best use of any space. However, floor to ceiling doors can present unique challenges when it comes to the sliding door hardware, and this has led Brio to design engineer and manufacture its Single Run Zero Clearance range delivering clearances of 2.5mm between the track and top of the door. Brio’s extensive Single Run hardware, ideal for floor to ceiling straight sliding timber doors, comes with Zero Clearance option offering a more streamlined finish compatible with today’s uncluttered minimalist interiors. The Zero Clearance option, available across Brio’s Single Run 80 – Single Run 350 product portfolio, successfully achieves the modern look with hardware discreetly hidden from view. With no hanger plates or screws protruding above the top edge of the door, Single Run Zero Clearance has been designed to achieve clearances of 2.5mm between the track and the top of the door. And, the new spring loaded guide and bottom rail can also be concealed within the bottom edge of the door thereby extending Zero Clearance to floor level. “The new Zero Clearance option has already proved popular with architects

and specifiers as only 2.5mm clearance is required between the top of the door and the track. The track can be installed into the ceiling so the door looks as though it is floating as the hangers are difficult if not impossible to see. It is a very aesthetically pleasing effect,” says David Newton, General Manager at Brio UK. The popular Brio Single Run range was designed for use on interior and exterior sliding shutters and doors in residential or light commercial settings. The application caters for any straight sliding top hung system from room dividers to agricultural and industrial doors – from 60kg to 350kg. The system is suitable for one panel sliding to one side or two panels bi-parting on a single run of track. Panels can also slide parallel to one another making Single Run suit just about any application. Brio has now introduced a frameless glass system to the Single Run range. Suitable for applications where floor to ceiling sliding frameless glass panels are to be installed. Zero Clearance for Glass is capable of coping with glass panels weighing from 80 to 180KG’s and is ideal for us in Commercial applications such as hotels and offices.
