Cabinet hardware installations just got a whole lot easier

Fitting handles on to cabinet doors and drawer fronts has never been easier thanks to the Cabinet Handle Jig. Suitable for handles up to 300mm centres, the handy adjustable template on the tool enables users to line up the correct hole positions on the door or drawer front so they can be drilled with precision to install the handle. This prevents errors or misjudged hole positions, and saves a lot of time and effort. Manufactured from aircraft quality aluminium, this jig is extremely durable and a must have for any toolbox. The Cabinet Handle Jig is priced at £149 +VAT each. Also available in this range is the larger Cabinet Hardware Jig, which is suitable for fitting handles up to 800mm

Higher Resistance Flashing Specification with Approved Cavitrays A high risk of exposure to severe driving rain exists in many parts of the UK, with areas previously considered to be sheltered experiencing extreme levels of deluge rainfall. The changes within BS 5534 prompted appraisal of British Standards BS 8104 and BR 262 that refer to buildings of a height up to 12 metres. When the height of the building exceeds 12 metres, BS EN 1991-1-4:2005+A1 addresses increased wind speeds. Wind/rain impact on roof/wall intersections can be demanding, especially where roofs are flashed. The windward side of a building will act as a vacuum force on the lee side of the building and it is generally accepted the uplift force is equal to the force applied windward. The pressure variances

undulate and can impose positive and negative pressures around flashings. Driving rain accompanied with wind will breach a conventional running stepped flashing where pressure forces the water into and under the flashing leading edge. Once under the leading edge, water is immediately in contact with the back of the flashing and the (outer skin) fabric of the building - the very masonry that is supposed to remain dry. The wetness then gravitates downwardly where theD masonry skin is an inside wall under the sloping roofline.

Far greater weathering protection is provided by individual stepped lapping flashings, compared with the traditional running flashing. Importantly, it is how such individual flashings are shaped, lapped, positioned and secured that identifies their capability. Type X Cavitrays manufactured specifically for stepped and staggered gable abutments have individual stepped lapping flashings already attached. The flashings are already shaped to suit the angle of the roof, and following building-in of the Cavitrays, require dressing only.

Once dressed, the relationship between individual flashings of trays provides a unique overlapping arrangement wherein should water drive under the leading edge, it is arrested by the lapping layer and safely discharged away from the masonry area that remains protected. Approved Cavitrays are made by one company - Cavity Trays of Yeovil, the only UK tray manufacturer awarded European Technical Approval. www.mclink.co.uk/974-102 ENQUIRY-Card 102

RINNAI TRAINING COURSES FOR 2017 Rinnai UK’s 2017 training programme has been designed to cater for the growing number of engineers and specifiers looking to utilise the energy saving benefits of gas fired continuous flow water heaters. Since the introduction of ErP last year, Rinnai has seen a massive increase in interest for its complete and comprehensive range of highly efficient A-rated continuous flow water heaters, and a commensurate surge in demand for training on the units. The company supplies models from the small domestic multi-point units to bespoke industrial hot water solutions. The Rinnai training department has trained 66% more engineers than in the year preceding implementation. These

have included bespoke courses designed to fit in with the modern time demands for professionals and the company has also seen a large increase in CPD modules all over the UK. Rinnai’s series of tailor-made, flexible courses allow engineers the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience of the practical and energy saving benefits of continuous flow gas fired water heater technology. The most popular course modules are ‘Understanding ACOP L8 and hot water system design’ and ‘System design incorporating continuous flow and renewables’. Engineers courses have already been booked through until the first week of February at Rinnai’s dedicated Runcorn training facility and at various venues in

the South of the country. Additional courses have been added that will take place on 9 and 23 February and 9 and 23 March at Runcorn, with more courses in the process of being added. According to Rinnai training specialist Ian Jenkins: “The sizing course is extremely popular, certainly with the specifiers, and the L8 module is also proving to be in demand. We trained 22 British Gas engineers in August alone last year - this is the third time we have trained groups of their engineers.” The hands-on training events are aimed primarily at engineers and facilities managers, covering both traditional and new technologies for commercial water heating, highlighting the considerable energy and monetary savings that can be achieved by the installation of a

V continuous flow hot water system. Courses can be arranged to suit individual requirements either at Rinnai’s dedicated training facility at their Runcorn, Cheshire HQ or if preferred, Rinnai will take training to a customer’s workplace or other convenient venue. The engineer training course line-up for 2017 includes nine modules: Rinnai product overview; Continuous flow and the future of water heating; Intermediate water heater; Continuous flow - Excellence in design; Service and fault diagnostics (Water heaters); Service and fault diagnostics (Energy saver warm air units); Understanding ACOP L8 and hot water system design; Maximising renewable gain in hot water design; and, Continuous flow as an innovative method of satisfying energy and regulatory demands. CPD Roadshow courses are also available, designed by Jenkins for M&E consultants and specifiers, design and build engineers, facilities managers and gas contractors. These courses have already attracted praise from CIBSE. For example, it says of the CONTINUOUS FLOW WATER HEATING SYSTEM SIZING AND DESIGN course: “The course delivers what it outlines and is well constructed.” For more information contact Ian Jenkins on +44 (0)1928 531 870 or email training@rinnaiuk.com For more details on RINNAI products visit www.rinnaiuk.com www.mclink.co.uk/974-504 ENQUIRY-Card 504

MAPEI CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS USED FOR SWANSEA HOUSING REFURBISHMENT Photography: Robert Melen

Matthew Street flats were originally built in the 1960’s as part of a wider housing boom at the time. The two ten-storey blocks of flats, owned and managed by the City and County of Swansea, have recently undergone a large scale refurbishment using Mapei construction products and have subsequently been upgraded to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS). As a result, residents will benefit from better quality, more energy efficient housing.

The project included removing asbestos, demolishing reduandant risers, replacing kitchens and bathrooms, electrical rewiring, as well as upgrading the insulation level to external walls. Beton Bauen carried out the specialist repairs on behalf of client Interserve Construction. A number of Mapei products were

specified including Mapei’s carbon fibre plate Carboplate E 170/100/ 1.4 which was bonded with Adesilex PG1 adhesive and used to reinforce 500-2000m2 of concrete elements damaged by physical and mechanical stresses within the block of flats. Mapei concrete repair mortars Mapegrout T40, Mapegrout T60 and Planitop Smooth and Repair were

used in the refurbishment of existing deteriorated concrete. The use of Planitop Smooth and Repair eliminated the need to break out concrete, significantly reducing the noise and dust pollution. This allowed all occupants to remain living inside the building whilst the refurbishment was taking place. For more information on how Mapei products can be used in your project, please call 0121 508 6970 or visit www.mapei.co.uk to view the full product range. www.mclink.co.uk/974-508 ENQUIRY-Card 508

Look closer at efficient fleet management Taking a closer look at the breadth of fleet management responsibilities can be daunting. The role requires understanding the business strategy and knowing how a vehicle fleet can best contribute to meeting objectives, in the long, medium and short terms. It demands expertise across a spectrum that can range from automotive mechanics to health and safety legislation. Vehicles have to be sourced and kept on the road cost-effectively. Running the fleet efficiently might start with keeping down the costs, but does not begin and end with finding low-cost fuel, tyres and other consumables. It involves everything from maintenance scheduling to route planning. Drivers have to be checked and, where necessary, trained or re-trained. www.look-closer.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/974-100 ENQUIRY-Card 100

Fittings for use on glass are a speciality for Blue Diamond Glass is a special material. It has a unique upmarket, quality feel and is becoming increasingly popular for use with top quality furniture and bathroom fittings such as office partitions and shower doors. Recognising this trend, Blue Diamond has expanded its scope of supply to include high quality door handles, hinges and latch systems for glass in a range of finishes including polished, linished and brushed. Although glass looks good, especially when combined with chrome or polished alloy fittings, fixings in glass are notoriously difficult to engineer and manufacture. Glass is a fragile material and drilling holes in it is both difficult and expensive. Designs are restricted by Standards that dictate how close a hole can come to the edge of a sheet of glass.

Thermoblock protects floor junction in low energy flat development A private development of highly energy efficient apartments in one of SouthEast London’s most popular districts is employing two different widths of Thermoblock – manufactured by Marmox Limited – to minimize heat loss at the floor junctions of the external and internal loadbearing walls. Tyson Road in Forest Hill is the prime location for an eco-development of 71 one, two and three bedroom flats across a total of nine separate blocks, rising to three storeys, where Wicklow Projects is the design and build contractor, employing London based Bryden Wood, an integrated architecture and engineering consultancy. Marmox is supplying hundreds of its 140 mm and 215 mm wide Thermoblocks for the build process with the wider units being used to subtend medium density (10.5N) concrete blockwork of similar width, which will form the stair cores and other internal load-bearing walls.

Railway on track for success with first class new look A POPULAR tourist attraction is moving full steam ahead with a major refurbishment programme – thanks to help from the experts.

Redecoration work at Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway has been going on since it was taken over by new owners two years ago. Now the initial stage of the project, which is breathing new life into historic stations, miniature steam trains and even the smallest pub in the world, is finally nearing the end of the line. And Peter Bryant, who bought the heritage railway alongside fellow enthusiast John Kerr in 2014, says a trusting business relationship has helped keep them on track. Paint for the entire project is being sourced from the Crown Decorating Centre in neighbouring Grimsby, where manager Robert Wray and his team are pulling out all the stops, according to Mr Bryant. He said: “We’ve invested heavily in both infrastructure and the upgrade of facilities and that includes extensive painting work. “We wanted to create a uniform look across the whole site and the team at Crown has

been massively helpful with that. “Not only are they supplying the paint to meet our very specific requirements, they provide invaluable advice and their customer service is second to none. “Robert really knows his stuff and his expertise has made a big difference to us during the last couple of years.” The idyllic site in North East Lincolnshire, which now attracts more than 250,000 visitors each year, features three stations, a café and museum along a two-mile narrow gauge line stretching from Kingsway (near Cleethorpes itself) to Humberston. But it’s the main station, at the halfway point of Lakeside, which is home to The Signal Box Inn – officially recognised as ‘the smallest pub on the planet’. The fully-stocked pub, measuring just eight feet square, was the latest building to be included in the makeover when it was repainted to mark its 10th

anniversary this year. Its new look falls in line with the railway’s iconic maroon and cream colour scheme and means it won’t be long before the first stage of the refurbishment programme, carried out by Peter and John alongside five full-time staff and a team of volunteers, is complete. Work will continue over the next few years with an extension to the main building at Lakeside and the redevelopment of Humberston station on the long-term agenda. Robert said: “We’ve supplied paint throughout the project along with advice on precisely which products to use and where and we’ve struck up something of a relationship with the guys at the railway. “They’ve been redecorating buildings inside and out, so they’ve used a lot of oil-based undercoat and gloss and we set them up with an account to make it more costeffective. “We’ve also used codes to supply very specific paint for some of their engines, particularly those based on Thomas the Tank Engine, as well as a special merchandising area. “It’s been quite an undertaking and it’s still very much ongoing, but I’m sure the railway will look good for many years to come and we’re happy to help out.” www.mclink.co.uk/974-516 ENQUIRY-Card 516

Sika Everbuild win NBG supplier of the year for a Sixth Time After a year away from the limelight, Sika Everbuild were thrilled to receive the ‘General Building Supplier of the Year’ award for the 6th time at this year’s NBG Conference held at Celtic Manor Hotel in Newport on 15th November. Since 2010, Everbuild Building Products have had a UK wide agreement with NBG to be preferred supplier of building chemicals, adhesives and sealants to the organisation’s network of independent builder’s merchants, with the relationship growing from strength to strength over the years. Sika Everbuild’s National Sales Manager, Mark Jones, collected the award on the evening stating, “It was a proud moment to walk away with this award for the 6th time after missing out on the top spot last year and is a testament to the whole Sika Everbuild team showing the amazing achievements that can be made through hard work and dedication.” Mark also added, “The response from NBG members this year has been incredible and we can only hope to continue this success in to the future.” www.mclink.co.uk/974-517 ENQUIRY-Card 517

Imperial Bricks introduces new 3” handmade bricks for North & Midlands

Buildbase launches £200k bursary to revive non-league football clubs

Imperial Bricks introduces new 3” handmade bricks for North & Midlands Imperial Bricks has launched a new range of 3” handmade bricks after identifying demand in the North and Midlands. The new bricks are available in a rustic red shade in three different textures and perfectly match imperial sized bricks commonly found in the North and Midlands. They are ideal for historic buildings that require renovation - or new builds looking for a more traditional character. The 3” Facing brick is a neater, more finely textured brick typically used on front facades. The 3” Handmade and 3” Reclamation Handmade (a heavily weathered version of the former) are coarser textured to create a more established, aged look. The bricks are fully frost-resistant with an F2 rating.

Football teams entering The Buildbase FA Trophy and Vase competitions could see their club facilities transformed through a £200,000 Buildbase renovation initiative. The Buildbase Club Renovation Programme launching today (Thursday 12 January), will help renovate the chosen non-league clubs in local communities across England and Wales. The product bursary will run over two years, with £50,000 in building and electrical products as well as hire equipment available for two clubs in 2017. A further £100,000 will be on offer to two clubs in 2018. Teams taking part in the two premier non-league competitions, The Buildbase FA Trophy and The Buildbase FA Vase, can win materials to help much-needed building and renovation work for their clubs by registering at www.buildbase.co.uk/ buildbase-renovation-application

Pudding Mill Lane is recognised as one of the busiest stations on the Dockland Light Railway (DLR), due to being one of the key transport links to the London Olympic Stadium home of English Premier League football team West Ham United. With around 750,000 people a year using Pudding Mill Lane, Resiblock Resiecco was specified to ensure sand stabilisation, prevention of weeds and stain protection. Civil Engineering Experts J McCann & Co Ltd carried out the works, after being contracted by Morgan Sindall, and the site was completed in November.

Ibstock showcases award winning design

Helifix Dixie piled foundations for new build modular & temporary structures

With the Brick Development Association’s (BDA) Awards set to take place this month, the latest edition of ‘Design’, the inspirational magazine from Ibstock, is showcasing a number of cutting-edge projects using Ibstock bricks, which have been shortlisted for the prestigious accolades. The latest issue, which is available now, also offers a multitude of technical advice and recommendations for creating curved brickwork, and features a number of recent building projects where such techniques have been applied to maximum effect. The latest issue offers an in-depth look at Incurvo, a private house in Oxfordshire, where the use of radial brickwork has been used to create striking aesthetics. In addition, further projects showcased in the latest edition, include: Cottrell & Vermeulen’s The Bean Learning Resource Centre at the independent Brentwood School in Essex, and Domino houses in North London.

A new brochure from Helifix gives details of how its versatile, high performance, Dixie micro-pile system can be used to provide reliable and economical structural support for new permanent and temporary buildings. Piled foundations are likely to be more cost-effective than traditional foundations requiring deep excavations, when load-bearing strata is at a deeper level. Helifix circular hollow section piles are simply screwed vertically into the ground, to the required depth, and then topped with an engineered steel plate. This plate is then either cast into reinforced concrete pile caps / ground beams, for traditional new build construction, or connected directly to the base of modular or temporary steel structures. Once a temporary building is dismantled, the piles can be ‘unscrewed’ and removed from site.

Resolutions are not just for New Year The traditional attitude to New Year resolutions is rather odd, according to Fuel Card Services. Steve Clarke, group marketing manager, puts it into context. “As summer fades, attention turns toward the end of the year,” he said. “Christmas cards appear in supermarkets from August onwards, then mince pies, and everything else soon follows. It comes earlier every year, with one exception. Those awkward New Year resolutions are always left to the last minute, which just does not make sense. If you can identify a change that really needs to be made, then why put off making it?” Steve went further, saying that managers should not make New Year resolutions at all. He said, “Whether running a couple of vans or hundreds of HGVs, management means always looking for new efficiencies in every area. www.mclink.co.uk/974-114 ENQUIRY-Card 114

400 trade professionals rate Bahco’s new saws ‘a cut above’

Following tough workplace testing by 400 independent trade professionals, coupled with huge investment in the latest manufacturing technology, Bahco’s great new handsaws are now delivering top performance across the UK.

With their classic yet contemporary design, Bahco’s Superior, ProfCut and PrizeCut saws set new standards in cutting performance, longlasting blade sharpness and the ability to cut many different materials in comfort and safety. Manufactured in Sweden by Bahco engineers, they are available in a wide range of types, toothing and tooth pitch, with optional versions for coarse, medium, fine,

precision and special cutting. Blade lengths range from a 12 tenon, 14 veneer and 20 precision saw to 22 and 24 lengths for coarse and medium cutting. An angled nose enables better access in tight places. Depending on the type selected the new handsaws will cut all kinds of timber, wet or dry, including tanalised wood, hard wood, plywood and thin profiles, as well as laminates, plastics, concrete, decor materials and soft metals. Developed through Bahco’s award winning scientific Ergo™ process, the Superior’s low friction blade has the very latest NXT hardpoint toothing. This technology builds on the success of the brand’s XT toothing to achieve smoother, straighter cuts and a higher,

flatter finish with less risk of deviation from the original line and no loss of speed. The textured, shock proof grip of the ergonomic handle, made from three high-tech materials, gives the saw a warm, comfortable feel and its 100g extra balance weight and 1.03 blade thickness provides a smoother action and maximum power transfer. Bahco’s ProfCut and PrizeCut saws have anti-slip handles inspired by the ergonomic principles of the Superior handle, offering comfortable, secure grip in all workplaces and weathers. Saw like never before with the NEW Festool Kapex KS 60! Launching February 2017 Festool is launching the NEW Kapex KS 60 - a mobile, compact and flexible sliding compound mitre saw in February 2017. With ergonomically placed carrying handles, a practical cord holder and a transport safety device, the new KS 60 is the perfect tool for assembly work. These benefits are combined with an extremely compact design and lightweight handling. Thanks to the mitre angle of up to 60 degrees on both sides and an inclination angle of up to 47 degrees on the left and 46 degrees on the right, the compact sliding compound mitre saw also enables excellent cutting with

maximal precision and versatility in mobile use. The saw slides forwards and backwards on the two column guides, but the columns do not extend backwards during this process. This saves space – particularly in small work areas. The new Kapex KS 60 offers numerous other clever details. These include an LED spotlight, which projects the shadow cast by the saw blade onto the point that is to be sawed on the workpiece, precisely highlighting cutting lines without distortion. Even long

workpieces pose no problem for the KS 60: Long workpieces can be easily positioned and cut on the integrated pull-out extension table. With the additional feet, the KS 60 can be raised to the height of a Systainer (size: SYS 1), therefore allowing the Systainer to be used as the support surface. The speed can be quickly adjusted to the material that is being processed which will remain constant during the sawing process. The angle finder enables all of the interior and exterior angles to

be precisely gauged and directly transferred 1:1 to the saw's angle setting, and thereby adjusted to the bisecting line. The spindle stop is also practical and can be used to change saw blades in an instant. Various versions of the new Kapex KS 60 will be available from February 2017. RINNAI VERSATILITY COVERS ALL NEEDS, ALL SITES Rinnai’s range of gas fired continuous flow hot water units are versatile and flexible in any application, on any site, delivering almost limitless hot water on demand.

The company’s Infinity units offer a viable solution for showering, bathing and washing in all types of domestic dwelling and also satisfy hot water demand in office buildings, large and small commercial premises, hotels, hospitals and care homes, leisure centres, caravan sites – and even horsewashing! Even when used as a booster to renewables such as air source heat pumps or solar thermal these technically advanced units will be cost efficient, environmentally friendly and fuel efficient. For example, Rinnai units are favoured by the 20-bed Brig of Orchy Hotel, which sits in a prominent roadside location close to the West Highland Way. Near Glencoe, the area is a walkers’ paradise and has the best climbing, walking and skiing in Scotland, so the hotel has high occupancy rates all year around. Two Rinnai HDC 1200i units meet and exceed the huge demand for hot water at peak times.

De Vere has also installed Rinnai technology at the prestigious de Vere Village Hotel in Warrington. Six Infinity HD50i units are capable of producing hot water at 780 litres per hour at a 50°C rise. The HD50i is a fully modulating 54kW unit that can also be installed in a manifold arrangement ensuring the system will meet any hot water demand even at peak times. At Sunbourne Glan y Mor Leisure Park in West Wales, owner Will Jones says: “During the peak season our shower block can be providing 80 showers a day falling to as little as 10 off season. The great thing about the Rinnai system is that it doesn’t use fuel until the outlet is turned on for each individual shower – it only heats the water that is being used at the time. Before we rebuilt, we had an old system tank which went cold when demand was high. Now we have the two HDC 1500i Rinnai boilers manifolded together so there is no problem of hot water running out at

peak times and importantly no more complaints. And we don’t have to heat up a tank of water.” Rinnai HDC1500i turns in 104.5% net efficiency* and when used in a solar thermal set up guarantees considerable ongoing energy savings when compared with traditional storage systems. Rinnai is also proving to be a thoroughbred in equine care in the form of the newly developed Ascot Hydra Horse Washer. A ‘light bulb moment’ struck Colin Davies, managing director of Ascot Hygiene, when he looked at a small electric dog wash unit he had designed for sprucing up man’s best friend (and the walker’s wellies) after a muddy run. “Why not make a bigger one for horses?” he mused. It didn’t take him long to identify the Rinnai Infinity 17e LPG unit as the central component of what was to become his innovative Ascot Hydra Horse Washer solution. With a Rinnai Infinity heater here are no sudden changes in water temperature thanks to the digital temperature controller so, if somebody is showering at 42°C and a tap is turned on elsewhere, the temperature will not vary. As a failsafe, the unit will automatically cut the heater should the temperature rise by 3°C above the chosen set point. In effect, Rinnai can guarantee a never-ending stream of safe temperature controlled hot water any time of the day or night. The appliances are also suited to LPG with the energy savings and high performance still guaranteed. Controls are also a major step forward in achieving best efficiencies whether local or integrated into a building

maintenance system. Rinnai has developed its own BMS Gateway interface for its award winning Infinity condensing range offering the prospect of higher energy efficiencies for commercial buildings offering ultimate control in large buildings, including multi-tenanted sites. Not only will building owners be able to slash both running costs and reduce embedded carbon, they will easily meet – and surpass – the demands of CSR requirements and current and future legislation. • All water-heating products sold in the UK need to meet minimum energy performance criteria in order to be legally placed on the market, and require an energy label. * In accordance with BS EN 677 For more information on the RINNAI product range visit www.rinnaiuk.com www.mclink.co.uk/974-534

Cool-Fit 20 passes its Cambridge Examination

First to introduce large scale press fittings into UK marketplace Pegler Yorkshire, a leading global plumbing and heating manufacturer, has extended its stainless steel XPress Press Fit range of fittings to included sizes up to 168mm - a first for the UK market. The two new additions complement the XPress range offering a complete system from 12mm through to 168mm. “We are constantly looking at what the market wants and addressing needs of specifiers and installers. We noticed a gap in the UK market for larger sized press fittings and have introduced these new sizes (140mm and 168mm) which allow greater flexibility on large scale installations,” said Amy Sedgwick, Press Systems Market Manager for Pegler Yorkshire. The XPress stainless steel range is a world class fitting that can now be fitted up to 25 bar, subject to application submittal and prior approval. www.mclink.co.uk/974-128 ENQUIRY-Card 128

University’s International Cambridge Assessment Group is in the process of moving into spacious and stylish new premises, where the latest insulated pipework system from GF Piping Systems has been specified to help maintain a comfortable indoor environment. The Triangle has been built for Cambridge Assessment by main contractor, Bouygues, while Allied Mechanical Services was the M&E subcontractor responsible for installing the package of COOL-FIT 2.0 pipe systems, which range from 32mm to 140mm in diameter and will carry chilled or low temperature hot water around the five storey buildings. The total value of the COOL-FIT 2.0 pipes and other components for the work on Phase 1 of The Triangle will be in excess of £400K. The project’s designers were looking for an innovative and economic solution for distributing the chilled water, and hot water (30ºC) for the space heating, around the office spaces as well as ancillary areas to The Triangle and were attracted to COOL-FIT 2’s performance benefits as well as its versatility. This new solution – suitable for chilled water, glycol, saline or alcohol - features factory insulated polyethylene (PE) pipe in a full range of diameters, which are then encased in HDPE or stainless steel outer pipe to offer long-term protection and rigidity. The integral insulation (GFHE) not only reduces energy losses, but counters the build-up of condensation and mould growth. The boilers are being installed on top of one building with the second housing in a chilled plant room while, internally, Allied Mechanical Services’ operatives assembled the main pipe runs as 375 separate modular units, each six

metres in length. These are then suspended from racks anchored to the structural soffits. Newmarket based Allied Mechanical Services has grown its business over the past 30 years to the point where it now has a workforce of 70 and an annual turnover of £11 M, including both new build and maintenance contracts in a diverse range of sectors. Allied Mechanical Services started work on the strategy for the installation in February 2016 and had already discussed and planned with Bouygues’ MEP manager to use innovative products and to utilise the modulation route for installation. Part of that strategy was to fabricate, offset and then transport completed multi-service modules to site, craned onto the floor and then distributed by hand to the correct locations. Consideration was given to other products but Allied Mechanical Services engaged George Fischer in the first instance for the widely used INSTAFLEX range, which would be utilised for the domestic water services and it was during these discussions that the COOL-FIT 2.0 product was discussed prior to its launch. Allied Mechanical Services saw many benefits in using this product as it is lightweight and preinsulated which, is the philosophy on the ductwork system installed. The lightweight nature meant that manual handling would be made easier and more manageable around a very busy site with multiple disciplines and trades working in close proximity. uk.ps@georgfischer.com www.gfps.com/uk www.mclink.co.uk/974-536 ENQUIRY-Card 536

Intamix Quickfit the industry’s speediest scalding solution

Another smart product range by Consort Claudgen!

Pendock bends it with LST Radiator Guards

Consort Claudgen has introduced an improved range of slimline low surface temperature fan heaters with intelligent fan control. Each PLSTi heater is equipped with intelligent fan control which detects the temperature in the environment and automatically adjusts its fan speed to quickly achieve a warm airflow temperature. This allows the heater to immediately blow hot air, even when initially powered on in a very cold room, for the user’s comfort. Enhanced with one of the latest low energy consumption EC motors, these smart heaters also operate on a very low noise level, are more durable with a strengthened grille and splash proof. The PLSTi heaters comply with NHS Estates Health Guidance Notes with a maximum surface temperature of 43oC, making them perfect for environments with vulnerable people such as children and elderly residents.

British encasement specialist, Pendock has been involved with important upgrades within the Whipps Cross University Hospital in Waltham Forest, London, which is affiliated with the prestigious and world-famous Barts Health NHS Trust and, having been founded in 1917, initially treated wounded soldiers from the Great War. Today it is famous for being the birthplace of former footballer and fashion icon, David Beckham and for having one of the largest and busiest A&E departments in the UK plus it was the first to open a hyperbaric unit. But, as with all older buildings and the advent of modern technology, refurbishment becomes necessary at Whipps Cross Hospital, the trust undertook a mock CQC audit which immediately highlighted a number of uncovered and very hot radiators as well as piping – obviously a burns risk to the elderly and infirm.

Anti-scald heating and plumbing product manufacturer, Inta, has launched the newest evolution of its multi-million selling Intamix thermostatic mixing valve (TMV). The newest TMV in Inta’s acclaimed range features a new patent pending quick-fit system that has 40% fewer connections than a conventional mixing valve arrangement. Inta has reduced the number of wet connections to the valve from five to three, drastically reducing the time it takes installers to fit the valve while reducing the chance of leaks. By shrinking the valve’s overall size, it can also be installed in locations where space is at a premium. The Intamix Quickfit comes with adjustable or fixed temperature options. The adjustable option gives installers flexibility to set the temperature for their specific application.

RINNAI CONTINUOUS FLOW HOT WATER UNITS REPLACE OLD STORED UNITS AT MALVERN HILLS CARAVAN SITE Rinnai, the UK’s leading manufacturer of continuous flow water heating systems, has transformed the hot water delivery arrangements at a busy Caravan Club site in the Malvern Hills. Malvern Hills Caravan Club site offers its visitors not only the beautiful Malvern Hills to explore but also the Elgar Trail taking in composer’s birthplace at Broadheath to his final abode in Worcester. Malvern adds to its charms with a Festival and Fringe in May as well as laying claim to having the finest parish church in England, all within easy reach of the caravan park. And it is, of course, renowned for its spring water. The site is especially busy from Easter all the way through to October so there is a continuous need for hot water. Providing plentiful hot water for visitors staying in caravans on up to 210 pitches, with demand for showers before breakfast and dinner is no easy task and it recently became clear that the site’s old, traditional system simply couldn’t cope. Contractor Booth and Bomford of Evesham advised on the task of supplying the needs of a toilet/shower block with a new state-of-the- art hot water system. It was important that the new system should be able to produce hot water any time of the day or night and never run cold, even at the busiest times.

water heaters and installation of four new Rinnai water heaters. We also needed to re-configure the hot, cold, LPG gas and return pipework to suit the requirements of the new heaters and insulate all new pipework, put in new vertical flues through the roof and a new water conditioning unit to protect the water heaters, followed by test and commission.” According to Cox, the popular Caravan Club site now benefits from energy and cost savings due to the fact that the new heaters are more efficient providing instantaneous hot water as required rather than having large amounts of stored hot water that is continually re-heated and is not required during out of peak times.

technologies on the market today for anywhere an energy efficient LPG instantaneous water heater is needed. Chris Goggin, Associate Director, Rinnai UK comments: “Installers and end users can rest assured that A-rated Infinity HDC units, including the HDC1500, offer highend performance with unrivalled reliability - with this type of application we have seen an energy reduction as high as 30%.” For more information on the RINNAI product range visit www.rinnaiuk.com

The Caravan Club obviously agrees as Booth and Bomford have won the contract to get to work on another two sites – Moorhampton in Hereford with two Rinnai HDC1500i heaters and Moreton-in-theMarsh where four HDC1500i heaters are going in. Both and Bomford is an established M&E contractor providing plumbing, heating and electrical services working on both commercial and domestic contracts and maintenance services. Clients include the Caravan Club, care homes, County & District Councils, colleges, schools, building companies and architects, private commercial and residential clients.

The decision was taken to install four Rinnai HDC1500i gas fired continuous flow heaters to provide a never-ending supply of temperature-safe hot water for even the busiest of times.

Rinnai offers the most energy efficient and cost effective range of LPG-compatible A-rated energy labelled appliances.

Polypipe Brings the Heat with new Smart Plus Controls This Autumn, Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of above and below ground drainage, plastic plumbing and underfloor heating (UFH) systems, is launching a new range of Smart Plus controls, designed specifically for use with their UFH systems. Plus controls from Polypipe have ‘push button’ initial pairing for easy installation, a wiring centre which can house up to

eight zones, and a screen for simple set up and diagnostics. Suitable for use in all rooms, including kitchens and

bathrooms, the controls are easily installed as an update to older systems. With full RF communication with the wiring centre, the controls are available in battery and mains powered variants, providing increased flexibility in new build houses and renovation projects. As well as providing vast benefits to installers, such as quicker and easier installation, the new control systems have been designed with the end user in mind, removing any concerns that homeowners may have. Users can choose anything from full TFT displays with touchscreen functionality to basic room sensors, making the system tailored to suit any budget or design. With a choice of five editable preset schedules or the option to create schedules from scratch, the system is designed to fit seamlessly around family life. Available in a range of colours, including chrome, black, blue and purple, the new controls are sleek and suit any interior aesthetic. When not in use, the unit screen displays a rolling selection of personal images,

or a clock. The easy to use menus can also be pin protected, meaning only the designated password holders can change the room temperatures. Andy Coy, Product Manager at Polypipe, said: “There are currently a number of different universal product controls on the market, working with lots of systems, from heating to lighting. Having controls specifically designed to manage UFH allows users to make the most of the energy savings and controllability on offer. Using a UFH system and controls from the same ensures manufacturer homeowners have access to the best systems available. “Arming installers with top of the range systems and advice, means that they can comfortably move into 2017, introducing or expanding UFH in their service offering.” For more information on the new controls and Polypipe’s wider underfloor heating range please visit www.polypipeufh.com www.mclink.co.uk/974-541 ENQUIRY-Card 541

Grundfos ALPHA3 perfectly in balance The new Grundfos ALPHA3 redefines what a small domestic circulator can do. Filled with useful features and robust hardware, the circulator raises the bar for efficiency and reliability in domestic circulators, even in the toughest systems. When combined with the ALPHA Reader the ALPHA3 uses a light sensor to read data communication from the pump and send it to a smart device. The installer then follows some easy steps to hydronically balance the heating system. This solution means that complex data collection and calculations are done automatically in the GO Balance app. This is a huge improvement on existing market solutions as time and costs are substantially reduced as the ability to read key data remotely benefits installers and homeowners alike, and a correctly balanced domestic radiator or underfloor heating system can generate savings ranging from 7% to 20% on the heating bill. The savings don’t end there as with an energy efficiency index of just 0.15, the Grundfos ALPHA3 is the most energy-efficient circulator in its class, it analyses the pattern of use and automatically adjusts the power output down to as little as 3W when the demand is low, offering an energy saving of 87% compared to regular pumps. So welcome to the market’s most reliable and durable circulator, with the added benefit of substantial savings on heating bills through quick and easy hydronic balancing. MULTI-GENERATIONAL

BATHROOMS The modern home is often a packed one, with multiple generations all living under one roof. Each age group has its own set of requirements and catering for everyone can be a challenge; particularly in the bathroom. Daniel Ward, Ceramics Product Manager for Twyford, looks at how to design bathrooms fit for all the family.

Bathrooms & Kitchens 35

Practical privacy The first stop for any bathroom, be that a palatial or cramped one, is storage. Hiding away unsightly toiletries will give the illusion of space, ensure the room looks clean and remove potential hazards. Messy teens can shut the door on their products and potions and adults can at least keep a cupboard of calm amongst the chaos. Multi-functional storage, such as undersink cupboards, or movable stools with hidden compartments, mean function can be maximised, ensuring every square inch is used in a practical way. For very small bathrooms, tall units, a growing trend in the UK, can provide the ideal solution, with each family member allocated a shelf. Safety first Safety is often the key concern for parents, or where households have less able residents. Thermostatic taps will prevent scolding, with the lever variety making it easy for arthritic and young fingers to use. For bathing, products such as Twyford’s All Offset Family Bath come complete with movable and reversible seat, headrest and a wider edge for parents or carers to sit alongside the bather. Shower seats are also available as well as flush to the floor shower trays to reduce trip hazards.

All-inclusive A few simple tweaks can make a bathroom a much more user friendly place, such as shallow basins which provide better access for wheelchair users, or cupboard doors including shelving so the small or less able don’t have to reach far inside. Comfort height toilets, positioned to make it easier to get on and off the pan can be a great addition. For the very young, toilet training can be encouraged using adaptable seats in child-sized proportions. Our family seat, available in the e100 Energy range, includes a softclose mechanism to protect little hands for added safety. Improved quality of life With the multi-generational home set to become a growing fixture in the UK, creating and adapting housing to meet its requirements is likely to be more common-place. Many of your customers may already fit this bill. Help them make their domestic set-up more practical, a step which could improve quality of life for all, alleviating some of the challenges associated with housing a range of ages and abilities under one roof. For further information on Twyford, contact tel: 01926 516800 or visit www.twyfordbathrooms.com

Safety also means keeping occupants free from unnecessary illness, which can easily be spread in the bathroom. Products to improve hygiene include Rimfree toilets, which leave germs with nowhere to hide - originally developed to meet the stringent demands of healthcare buildings. Where Rimfree is combined with wall hung, cleaning is even easier, with no dust collecting pedestals required. www.mclink.co.uk/974-547. ENQUIRY-Card 547

Shower cubicles solve

SHOWER SYNDR Last summer a family from Rochdale replaced a leaking shower enclosure for a Kinedo Eden shower cubicle from Saniflo. It all started when there was a leak and water came through the ceiling causing damage to the dining room ceiling below the bathroom, and stained the rug. Initial investigation suspected the source of the leak as cracked grout and failed silicone.

• Install supply pipes Now install supply pipes for the shower, connect the waste to the shower tray and adjust the legs to ensure the tray sits flat on the new floor.

• Check for leaks Pour water down the waste pipe to check for any potential leaks.

However, as the enclosure was removed there was more evidence of damage caused by the leak. The tiles inside the enclosure had moved far more than expected and were very loose. After removing the tiles, it was apparent that the plaster board was very damp and wet rot was suspected on the wooden studs. When the shower tray and tiles from the enclosure area were removed, the floor beneath the tray and the wall studs were indeed found to be rotten with wet rot spores, which had travelled across four wall studs, causing the wallpaper in the bedroom next door to the bathroom to peel off the wall. What follows is a step by step guide of how to resolve such a situation by installing a shower cubicle, such as the Kinedo Eden Corner Entry by Saniflo.

• Repair all damage All damage must be repaired before preparing the area for a new shower cubicle. Remove and replace rotted

• Connect shower valve Connect the shower valve to the glass panel and connect the overhead shower to the shower.

• Fix back panel timber studs and treat any remaining exposed timber with a wet rot timber treatment. Patch up any rotten floor timber leaving a rigid and secure base for the installation of the Kinedo Eden Corner Entry shower cubicle, complete with thermostatic shower valve. Rebuild bathroom and repair any damage to adjoining bedrooms, living room below.

Install the first back panel insitu on the shower tray before fixing the second panel which has the shower fitted.

• Connect shower panel to pipes The panel with the shower is then connected to the supply pipes. The shower connection pipes are clearly identified hot and cold. You may have to recommend full bore isolation valves to ensure the best flow to the shower.

Bathrooms & Kitchens. 37

However, the shower could still be used as there was no tile adhesive, grout or silicone in the bathing area which needed to dry.

ROME • Test Flush the shower through to test.

• Place back panel and sliding doors in position The back panel is then placed into position and then the sliding doors are placed in position. The shower door connecting blocks are then fitted. In the case of the Rochdale family, the tiles removed from the enclosure were recycled and replaced only in the areas which are now on show. This would not have been possible had the customer decided to have a replacement enclosure rather than a Kinedo leak free shower cubicle.

So the next time you have to replace a leaky shower enclosure, recommend a shower cubicle to your customer. Not only will installing a new shower cubicle save them time, hassle and labour costs, they’ll have a new shower up and running in less than a day, and a shower that easy to clean and maintain in the longterm. For further information on the full range of Kinedo cubicles please visit www.kinedo.co.uk

The plumber had to return to grout the tiles outside of the cubicle 48 hours after placing them on the wall to ensure the adhesive had dried completely.

Dunlop Shower Waterproofing Kit – The easy way to protect your shower, bathroom or wetroom Ensuring a wetroom, bathroom or shower is fully waterproof is crucial part of any installation, because tiles and grout on their own will not inherently protect against water damage. Dunlop, which manufactures tiling and decorating products for the trade, offers a Shower Waterproofing Kit, specially designed to include everything required to allow tradesmen to waterproof a shower area, wet room or walk in shower area in a quick, easy and simple way. Designed for any internal intermittent area where continued exposure to

water may cause damage, the kit fully waterproofs the background behind the tiles to prevent water penetration up to 1.5metres high in a two-walled shower unit or 1metre high in a three-walled shower unit. As a result the kit prevents water saturating the whole area, reducing the risk of unsightly black mould forming, and drastically reducing the risk of more serious issues such as floor collapse and other surfaces vulnerable to corrosion. Dunlop’s Shower Waterproofing kit provides an ideal waterproofing system for showers, wetrooms, kitchens and utility rooms to prevent damaging leaks and leave tradesmen and their customers with the ultimate peace of

mind. As with all of Dunlop’s tiling products, the kit is also supported by a 10-year guarantee, so confident are Dunlop that the kit will prepare and protect against water penetration for years to come. To get ultimate waterproof protection, simply apply the primer to dry walls and floors, and leave until touch dry, seal corners, cracks, joints and floor junction with the Waterproof Coating before applying the tape to ensuring no voids are left behind. Finish by applying the coating to at least 1metre in height all over the shower walls, coating any taped areas, and, if used, over the floor matting area. This fully protects the background

making the area ready to receive tiles within in just 24 hours. Debi Boulton, Sales and Marketing Manager for Dunlop Adhesives, said: “Over the last few years the popularity of wet rooms and showers has increased dramatically, which in turn has increased the risk of installation failures due to lack of waterproofing protection. As a result we developed our Shower Waterproofing Kit which meets the demands of our customers for a quick, easy to use waterproofing kit. “With superior performance and features, our Shower Waterproofing Kit continues to prove extremely popular with the trade.” For more information on Dunlop’s Shower Waterproofing Kit and a Step-by-Step video visit: www.dunloptrade.com/products/ shower-waterproofing-kit/

Cottages’ prestigious award A restoration project featuring Earthborn paints has won two categories in the prestigious 2016 Daily Telegraph Homebuilding and Renovating Awards.

Two miners’ cottages in Pensford, Somerset, were restored by architects and developers Design Storey to create dwellings fit for 21st Century living. The judges selected the cottages for Best Renovation, while Telegraph readers awarded them the coveted Readers’ Choice. Design Storey was keen to reflect the character of the 18th Century former miners’ cottages by conserving all original features. As many materials as possible were salvaged and reused. Most internal walls were reinstated with either lime plaster or timber panelling. Lydia Robinson, Director of Design Storey, said: “We used a combination of raw and painted plasterwork. To protect the traditional wall materials we sought to maintain their breathability by specifying Earthborn paints: Ecopro Matt Emulsion on plastered areas and Claypaint on the timber panelling. Their flat matt finish sits comfortably against

the lime plaster. “The rough sawn timber panelling was fire treated. Claypaint covered it easily and looks fantastic.” Ecopro Emulsion is a high performance, environmentally sound alternative to conventional emulsions. Claypaint uses advanced technology to maximise the natural properties of clay, producing a high performance, highly breathable paint. More commonly used on plastered walls, it works equally well on timber substrates as in this project. Both paints are EU Ecolabel approved. They contain no oils or acrylics, making them virtually VOC free and highly breathable. Breathability is vital to prevent a build up of damp in historic walls. Denso Protection System for National Grid LNG Tank Bases Winn & Coales Denso Tank Base Protection System is being used at the Isle of Grain National Grid site on four of their LNG storage tanks. The installation work was carried out by contractors JPV Painters of Brentwood. To meet various operating conditions at the Isle of Grain National Grid site the Denso Tak Base system was chosen to give effective protection Following surface preparation, Denso Hi-Tack Primer and Denso Primer D were applied. Densyl Mastic was then applied in the gap between the tank and the base. This not only provides a sealant between the concrete and tank base to prevent entrapment of water but also a smooth profile when applying the following Denso Hi-Tack Tape. A single layer of Denso Ultraseal RT Tape was applied and then finally a topcoat.

THE COLD Cold, wet, windy weather – British people are used to protecting their homes against the elements. But what about the contents in the garage?

There are other big advantages too from this advanced garage door. The doors, with its superior lifting gear, rise vertically before tracking back smoothly and quickly into the top of the garage. This offers maximum drive way space as you can park right up to the garage door. The doors also offer extra width for vehicles entering the garage – ideal for wider vehicles such as 4x4s and MPVs. Garador Sectional Doors are opened and closed by a new generation of ultra secure Garador GaraMatic automatic operators and they are available in a

wide range of sizes, designs, colours and surface finishes in both standard and premium models. With Britain’s changeable weather, and with the value of the contents of garages steadily increasing, it makes more sense that ever to choose a Garador Sectional Door. Find out more by calling 01935 443710 or visiting www.garador.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/974-570 ENQUIRY-Card 570

That valuable garden equipment, those tools and other items stored in garages along with any vehicles also need protection. Install a specialist Garador Sectional Door and its outstanding engineering and excellent thermal insulation will add value to any property and be a big selling point in a home. Insulation is key throughout Garador’s Sectional Door range and the Premium range all offer a 42mm thick double skin steel section evenly filled with CTFfree PU foam. If the garage might be used as a workshop or exercise centre, this will offer that extra protection needed. But it is not just the integral insulation that helps protect the garage. Garador’s Sectional Garage Doors all come with flexible and weather resistant seals on all four sides of the door to ensure the wind, rain and even the snow is kept outside.

NorDan windows contribute to energy efficiency at Partick Housing Association development in Broomhill Glasgow A new £5.5m development funded by the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and private finance has just been completed at Broomhill Gate Glasgow for Partick Housing Association. Designed by Glasgow firm MAST architects and built by Cruden Building and Renewables, the development features NorDan’s timber windows. MAST Architects say: ”NorDan’s Scandinavian timber windows assisted as part of an enhanced building fabric to achieve energy efficient, sustainable family homes and flats for affordable and private rent, at this new development in Broomhill, Partick. The project was designed for Partick Housing Association and was recently completed by Cruden Building and Renewals.” The project consists of 47 units including construction of fourteen townhouses, eighteen common close flats and a care home for people with severe and enduring mental health issues. The latter was built as a supported accommodation block with

14 bedsits and 1 staff sleepover room. NorDan is one of the biggest Scandinavian producers of high quality, high performance timber windows and doors. The firm celebrated 90 years in business in 2016 at its group headquarters in Moi, Norway. NorDan UK Ltd opened a new headquarters in Livingston, Central Scotland close to the M8 motorway. A new showroom is planned for January 2017. MAST architects are based in Glasgow. NorDan was founded in 1926 by Johannes Rasmussen, and is today run

by the third generation of the Rasmussen family. NorDan prides itself in using carefully sourced, certified sustainable raw material. Our global economy is now bringing to bear the Butterfly effect: when a butterfly flaps it’s wings in one part of the world it can cause a hurricane in another part of the world. Construction by its nature of increasing or improving density is intensely energy demanding, the embodied energy contained in our building stock has derived from the earth’s resources, therefore, as construction professionals we should all carefully consider the ethics of our purchasing decisions. The materials used on a building draw from the Global economy, therefore a decision today could create deforestation in poorer regions of the world or create the impetus for modern slavery. New Eurocell cills adapt to fit Eurocell has expanded its PVC-U window cill range with two new models measuring 125mm and 225mm deep. The wider model is specially designed for the new build sector because of the increase in larger wall cavities intended to achieve lower U-values. Furthermore, the 225mm item has the flexibility to accommodate surveying discrepancies by fitting a cill extender – alongside a standard range of frame extension trims – to create a cill up to 275mm in depth. The cills have foot details so they can be cleat fixed and, with a 10mm frame extension, can provide the flat bottom often encountered in new build.

Available with four different door leaf inserts, from tubular chipboard spacers to a high quality solid chipboard, the timber doors offer real choice when it comes to design specification. The sturdy timber frame consists of a 25mm thick jamb lining and the robust steel frame has a special coating to maximize endurance and ensure that they really are a door for life. Make an Entrance with the New Technic-AL RD1 Entrance Doors from AluFoldDirect The perfect front door is one of the biggest decisions to make on a self-build project. It’s where first impressions are made, visitors are welcomed and security is most vital.

For self-builders looking to create an impressive entrance to their project, the stunning new Technic-AL RD1 Entrance Door range is a striking new solution from AluFoldDirect. “From listening to our customers, we knew that a beautiful, top-quality entrance door was in demand on the market,” explains Craig Miller, Managing Director at AluFoldDirect. “We also learned that a lot of this demand was coming from people who were embarking on self-build projects and wanted to create a grand entrance to their home.” The introduction of Technic-AL RD1 Entrance Doors to the AluFoldDirect product range follows the trend for topquality aluminium bi-folding and sliding doors being installed on self-build projects. The new entrance door range matches the design and quality values of AluFoldDirect’s aluminium bi-folding and sliding doors and slimline windows. This gives the opportunity for selfbuilders, their architects and their builders to shop for all of their aluminium glazing requirements with AluFoldDirect. “Performance and aesthetics were the two most important factors for our customers,” continues Craig, “so we developed the Technic-AL RD1 Entrance Door to deliver in both areas.” The contemporary range of entrance doors is completely unique. The slimline, thermally broken, aluminium frame is filled with an engineered, thermally insulated timber door blade, available in nine stunning designs.

RD1 has full Secured by Design accreditation and features the Winkhaus AV2 lock and an SBD Yale Platinum 3star cylinder for total security. Building regulations are fully catered for with UValues ranging from 1.3 to 1.6W/m2K, dependent on door blade design. There are nine distinctive designs available, each named after a cosmopolitan European city, including Bonn, Bruges and Maastricht. There are multiple colour options and a five-stage paint process for a beautiful finish to satisfy even the most exacting requirements. Modern pole handle options complete the look. Made to measure RD1 residential doors are available on a three-week lead time in the seven most popular colour choices, with fully bespoke colours and dual colour options taking a little bit longer. “The RD1 range offers extensive design options to self-builders. There are no stock sizes – each Technic-AL RD1 Residential Door is a handmade piece of furniture, designed and manufactured to each individual order for a completely bespoke solution,” continues Craig. “We wanted to offer a door that matched security expectations, exceeded regulation on thermal efficiency and looked stunning. The result is the new Technic-AL RD1 Residential Door range, a collection which meets customer demand for high-end design and superb performance.” info@alufolddirect.co.uk www.alufolddirect.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/974-580 ENQUIRY-Card 580

MAXIMISING THE VALUE OF YOUR DOOR HARDWARE

By Simon Osborne, Commercial Leader UK & Ireland of Allegion UK When looking at door hardware, it may at first appear to be a simple choice that can be broken down into three broad factors: appearance, functionality, and cost, i.e. what type of hardware looks best, does what I need it to do right now and is the cheapest method of fulfilling the requirement.

Cheap products are cheap for a reason, and they often have poorer performance over quality engineered hardware. Whether that means they have poorer grading standards or are manufactured from less robust materials, it all results in shorter lifecycles.

However, there should be a much deeper thought process than that of the face value considerations listed above, particularly if you are specifying for multiple buildings, high footfall areas or if you are building in the public sector.

Door closers and exit devices in education and healthcare facilities are a prime example of this due to the high usage – and sometimes misuse – they are subjected to. Good quality hardware is engineered for such environments, while cheaper hardware isn’t. Consequently, if you choose cheaper hardware, you may be replacing it more regularly and, so, incurring additional labour and purchasing costs.

Lowering installation, maintenance & running costs

Think added value From call outs to wiring, fitting to testing and more, labour costs are one of the highest components of the built environment spend. However, it is one that can be reduced with correct specification. If you are upgrading your door hardware, try considering electromechanical wireless options. Most modern closers and door furniture now run off batteries and communicate wirelessly through routers, so there is less dependence on hard-wiring to building power sources and hubs. Battery life is also no longer a hindering factor as we can now see standard AAA battery-run hardware lasting upwards of 20,000 cycles. Choosing door furniture and systems that are designed specifically for retrofitting will also cut costs from installation and maintenance through less upheaval and less disruption. In most cases, all that is required is a simple remove and replace. Quality over cost It may be tempting to use products that hold a cheaper ticket price, but, logically, picking products that are more durable and are also proven to last longer will eventually save money in the long run.

It is often hard to see the added value a simple door handle or closer can carry, but the door hardware industry continually drives research and development to make products the best they can be for their users. In today’s world, there are a variety of hidden benefits that well-designed door hardware can bring. For instance, door handles in healthcare facilities will often incorporate active anti-microbial agents to minimise germs spreading and prevent bacteria from growing. On the technology side, digital keyless access systems are also forever improving with smart technology to meet and exceed consumer expectations. A prime example of this are electromechanical exit devices which marry with digital access control. This smarter selection process yields costs savings from other areas that aren’t directly associated to facilities management too. For example, lessening the possibility of germs spreading in schools may lead to a lesser chance of cross-infection and contamination and, thus, less absenteeism amongst pupils and staff. Increase your knowledge, buy right the first time Two of the biggest issues found in the “Review of Education Capital” by Sebastian James in April 2011 include a “lack of expertise on the client side meant that there was little opportunity to improve building methods in order to lower costs over time,” and “procurement starts with a sum of money rather than with a specification.” These two issues are stark representations of fundamental flaws that can be easily fixed, not just for the education sector, but across the entire spectrum of the door hardware purchasing process. The key point is this: When decision makers lack expertise, they often rely on the installer or contractor, who may be working to their own benefit and picking

products that are available from their local merchants or products that are on offer. Installers and contractors may also be recommending hardware they know and have historically used out of habit, as opposed to looking into other options that may improve the building or extend the lifespan of the product in question. Procuring on a budget may also prove detrimental, as again a buyer is often blinded by cheap alternatives, rather than having an understanding of the right product at the right cost that could save money in the long term. Consultation and collaboration with a specialist in door hardware during the specification stage is often the best method of protecting yourself against these situations. Future-proofing Another area that must be on the agenda is the issue of future-proofing, especially because the landscape of the built environment is moving in tandem with electronics and digital access. To maximise the value of your hardware in this respect, there should be a clear long-term plan of how your building will be used in the future, considering the needs of occupants and building and security managers. www.mclink.co.uk/974-605 ENQUIRY-Card 605

Eurocell delivers astronomical event with massive Equinox Strong technical support and advanced design has enabled Ludlow builder Terry Angell to build what is thought to be the largest ever Equinox tiled roof to be erected in the UK – despite never before having worked with the innovative roof system devised by Eurocell.

The roof itself is the largest that the company has ever supplied, measuring 12.5m x 6.5m at its widest, and forms a distinctive P-shape using five hips and a valley for which the company’s own design engineers undertook the structural calculations to ensure that the roof was strong enough to meet Building Regulations. “The pitch of the roof would have been impossible in timber because it would never have been strong enough to carry the snow that would fall on it”, comments Terry Angell. “It’s certainly strong enough now – I’ve jumped up and down on it”. The original building is a 90s-built two-bedroom cottage at the top of Clee Hill, Shropshire, which stands some 365m above the surrounding countryside and looks out over to the Brecon Beacons and the landmark Hay Bluff, which dominates the Wye Valley. The conservatory-style extension on this side of the house takes full advantage of this panorama while accommodating a snug, complete with wood-burning stove and television, and a dining-cum-living room. The decision to specify an Equinox tiled roof took Terry by surprise, as he had recommended that the homeowner should contact Eurocell to discuss windows but the area manager, Jonathan Mack, had put forward this quick-to-install roofing system. The homeowner, Andy Fleming, was impressed – not only does it carry a 25-year guarantee but it also provides a comfortable living area that costs less to heat or cool than comparable systems. This marketleading thermal performance is due to solid insulation panels integrated in the structure which are approximately ten times more effective than ‘A’ rated windows. Terry was more than happy to take on the challenge.

“I was looking forward to being on a learning curve because you’ve got to keep up to date with modern materials and methods in this line of work. Otherwise, you risk becoming a dinosaur”. In the case of Equinox, the learning curve is as gentle as can be because the roofing system is devised specifically to make installation simple and make the installers’ workload as light as possible. A threeman installation team can complete an Equinox tiled roof in just two days, and it will be watertight on day one, so it can be safely left overnight. Also Equinox kits offer a ‘one box solution’ – all the roof components, sealants and fixings required to install the roof to the highest standard are delivered to site in one container. Eurocell provides the technical support that installers need to be sure of getting the right fit first time, every time. Once it has received all the dimensions, Eurocell engineers will create all the components required, including the tile sheets, hip end caps and ridge and hip top cap using state-of-the-art equipment. Except in this case: recognising that this particular project was very large, Eurocell delivered all the parts on a 38-tonne trailer and sent out two members of its technical support team. “It was colossal – breathtaking. Like a giant Meccano set. But it was all there, cut to size, and it was just a case of working out what went where”, recalls Terry Angell. The system has a 5 to 350 pitch variable ring beam assembly that increases the types of roofs that can be replaced while adjustable angles on the hip, valley and ridge add up to easier fitting, and ensure that tiles and ridges sit correctly for finishing. All rafters sit flush with the hip and rafter too, providing greater strength. Thermal breaks avoid moisture build up, and air gaps within the roof allow any moisture to dissipate quickly – so there is no danger of internal condensation, unlike some tiled roof systems. The roof was up and, within three days, Terry was able to start fitting the insulation and plywood. In this particular project the roof has been tiled using composite tiles together with roof windows, but Eurocell can also offer a speedier alternative with its SlateSkin GRP system. This reduces the time spent positioning and nailing tiles as each sheet consists of multiple tile courses, so it is up to 50% faster to fit than other traditional conservatory tile roofing methods. In the event, Terry was very happy with the results and says: “I’ll definitely use it again”. And the customer? Andy says: “It’s a lovely big open space that’s light, airy and warm and makes the most of the view. Now, on a clear day, we can see for 60 miles”. www.mclink.co.uk/974-583 ENQUIRY-Card 583

Improve your home and personal wellbeing with more natural light thanks to rooflights from the National Domelight Company.

Natural light is hugely important in a home. It can make a room feel bigger, more spacious, airier, transforming dark and tired spaces. But even more importantly, it can have a huge effect on our wellbeing and enjoyment of our homes. Re-energise and improve wellbeing Improving the natural light in a home is easy with rooflights and skylights. They can let in up to three times more light than a same-sized vertical window to flood a space with natural light and drastically improve the home.

Pointing you in the right direction for greater effect In the scheme of things, where should a rooflight go? You’ll need to think about which way your home and windows face in relation to the sunlight. A south-facing window will get the sunlight for most of the day. While a north-facing window will get no direct sunlight but a weaker light all day. A west-facing window will get the sun from early afternoon and an eastfacing window will catch the sunrise. Where you position your windows will depend on the size of the room and how much light you want to let in. People often forget that by extending a room they are moving the vertical windows further away, which can make the space darker. Incorporating a rooflight into the design of your new extension or development will bring daylight right into the heart of the space and make the room feel brighter and more inviting. Contact the National Domelight Company to discuss a project and find a solution that fits your needs. www.mclink.co.uk/974-586 ENQUIRY-Card 586

When we talk about roofing systems, their relative merits and sustainability, we need to understand what sustainability means: The capacity to endure, with the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources and thereby supporting long term ecological balance. So how do we fit the bill? The Resin 80% of the resins in KEMPEROL® 2KPUR are derived from the seeds of the tropical castor plant (ricinus communis) a sustainable resource that for every kilogram of castor oil produced in place of a petroleum-based polyol, there is a reduction of nearly 3.5 kilograms of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. A cradle-to-gate study

commissioned by the Department of Energy (DOE) reported that there are essentially zero net greenhouse gas emissions from the production of castor oil. Added to that the reinforcement fleece we use contains a 25% recycled plastic bottle content. Kemper System is fully committed to the conservation of natural resources and are part of the chemical industry’s unique global initiative – ‘Responsible Care’. The Application Substrate conservation is a key element in sustainability. When our approved contractors carry out refurbishment work or upgrade the insulation on an existing roof, the KEMPEROL® resin is usually laid directly onto the substrate or utilises the failed membrane as a vapour control layer as part of our

Acme Double Camber specified for historic school roof renovation Marley Eternit’s Acme Double Camber clay plain tiles have been used to create a beautiful multi-toned clay roof, as part of a renovation project, at a 19th century school in the Buckinghamshire village of Monks Risborough. Set in a conservation area, Monks Risborough C of E primary school was founded in 1855 and was expanded during the mid 20th century. Although the original tiles had been replaced, damage caused by debris from an adjacent tree meant that the clay roof was in such a poor condition, that Buckinghamshire County Council decided to replace the entire roof. Contractor Allen Roofing chose the Acme Double Camber clay tiles because they gave a similar appearance to the existing roof and the rustic aesthetic complemented the historical features of the building.

Bicester Village, one of the UK’s major outlet shopping villages, has recently undergone a major extension. The work has added additional shopping space and car parking, and Cembrit PB has been used as a renderbacker on the exterior facades of the extension. Bicester Village receives visitors from across the world and the major works to extend the development began in August 2016. Set for completion in January 2016, the building work will add an extra twenty eight shops and over 500 parking spaces. Stockford Construction of Thame, Oxfordshire has a reputation for being one of the UK’s leading specialists in external render system installation working in close collaboration with internationally-renowned material manufacturers. Stockford installed 800m² of Cembrit PB to the steel frame structure and encapsulated it with the stunning MonoTherm TXF system manufactured and supplied by Monocouche Render Systems Ltd to achieve the

This can also have the added benefit of reducing the duration and cost of your project. The Performance None of the above would mean anything without great performance. KEMPEROL® 2K-PUR is not only solvent-free and odourless, it has proven performance in use with a BBA certified performance life in-excess-of 25 years. It is also inherently root resistant making it ideal for green roof projects.

Creating a healthy ambience This specialist school in the South of England educates children and young people with special needs including autism and learning difficulties. Set in stunning grounds, the school has recently completed a major construction project, designed by Lee Evans Partnership, to ensure that all its buildings are suited to pupils with their wide range of neurological and developmental disorders. One of the most important facilities is the new aqua centre. Designed to be used by all the students, one of the features of the state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool is its extraordinary calming internal ambience created by the installation of Kalwall translucent cladding, from Structura. Insulating Kalwall was specifically chosen by the architects because of its unique ability to convert and diffuse daylight, as well as providing privacy. It also eliminates brightness, glare and shadows which are common with normal glass. www.mclink.co.uk/974-146 ENQUIRY-Card 146

Sika Provides Warm Start to the School Year Roofing contractor, Ice Roofing, has completed a complex upgrade ahead of programme at Robert Bakewell Primary School in Loughborough, thanks to the ease of installation of a Sika Liquid Plastics’ roofing system. Building surveyor, Make, specified a full built-up roofing system with Decothane Ultra low odour coldapplied liquid roofing membrane as the final waterproofing layer for the scheme to address issues with the integrity of the existing waterproofing and raise the building’s thermal performance to current building regulations standards. The project was designed to improve the school environment, leveraging funding from the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF), an initiative that academies and sixth form colleges can apply for each year. www.mclink.co.uk/974-147 ENQUIRY-Card 147

Yeoman Rainguard GRP Downpipes Weather the Elements at Scarborough’s New RNLI Lifeboat Station. A new building was required to house Scarborough RNLI’s (Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s) new arrival – a Shannon class all-weather lifeboat, which is larger than Scarborough’s outgoing Mersey class lifeboat. Photography by Dave Barry R.N.L.I

The charity’s new purpose built lifeboat house at Scarborough not only boasts a modern and practical interior with upgraded volunteer crew facilities, an up to date drying room along with a modernised shop and exhibition facilities for visitors, but also a robust, low maintenance, weather resistant exterior. Having to use building materials which can stand up to the coastal elements, Yeoman Rainguard GRP downpipes were chosen to complete a hardy rainwater system with their 100mm diameter GRP downpipes in Black being installed to the exterior of the new building. Though lightweight, making the downpipes easier to handle when fixing on site, GRP is a durable material which can deliver many years of maintenance free service. In turn this will save time

and money being spent on repair or replacement benefitting the ecological rating and lifecycle of the building. The through coloured GRP downpipes are not susceptible to erosion from sea salt or indeed to colour bleaching from the Sun’s ultra violet rays ensuring that the Station will remain looking as good as new for many years to come. Scarborough’s new Lifeboat Station with new modern amenities and the arrival of their new £2M Shannon class lifeboat (funded by donations from the FW Plaxton Charitable Trust), is certainly something that Scarborough can be proud of. Terrain has a ball on O2 Project Europe’s largest pillar free ballroom can now welcome dancers from around the globe thanks to the installation of an innovative drainage system. The 4,800 metre2 ballroom, situated in the InterContinental London O2 Hotel, is located close to its iconic namesake, the O2 Arena. The hotel also boasts several restaurants, a spa and a panoramic Sky Bar, offering views of Canary Wharf and the River Thames.

Standing at 19 storeys high and containing 453 bedrooms and suites, it was of paramount importance that the drainage system installed could be trusted not to leak, and so M&E Contractor, H.E. Simm & Son Ltd., approached Polypipe to manufacture a

suitable solution. As experts in providing intelligently designed solutions for the movement of water and air around tall buildings, Polypipe Terrain provided an appropriate system using Terrain FUZE HDPE. Made of high-density polyethylene, Terrain FUZE is lighter in weight than cast iron equivalent systems and can therefore feature longer pipe runs, meaning less jointing is required. This in turn, provides less opportunities for the system to leak, making it ideal for the project. As the system is jointed using electrofusion welding, where the weld area is as strong as the host material, system integrity is increased and consequently the risk of leaks in the development is further reduced. With floor space in the centre of London at a premium, any ways to reduce the footprint of the drainage within the building would maximise commercial space, a key consideration of H.E. Simm & Son Ltd. and the O2 Hotel. Martin Thompson, Senior Project Manager at H.E. Simm & Son Ltd., said: “The drainage system installed at the O2 Hotel needed to be considered and intelligently designed. The innovation displayed by Polypipe’s Terrain system, including FUZE HDPE made best use of the available space.” Rebecca Harland, Key Account Director at Polypipe Terrain, said: “At Polypipe we don’t just supply pipes, we provide an intelligently designed Terrain drainage

system, tailored to meet the end needs of the building. We pride ourselves on being experts in providing drainage within tall buildings and have worked on some of the most impressive buildings around the world. The O2 Hotel is another example to add to this list.” For more information on Polypipe Terrain’s products and services please visit: www.polypipe.com/terrain
