Innovative technology for ventilation

Improving thermal performance with secondary glazing

Cabinet Light Jig

Vectaire's MVHRs with EC motors incorporate innovative technology for ventilation at near inaudible levels and meeting environmental criteria. The WHHR100/90DC-B-BABY is for inline installation into loft, cupboard or ceiling void. It has a sophisticated control system and summer bypass. It provides low energy, economical, continuous ventilation in up to five rooms (with 92% heat exchange efficiency). It maintains a comfortable environment and a good level of air quality eliminating excess condensation and odours. All this has led to Jarvis Contracting choosing this unit for installation (by Air Quality Services) into the Anson Court Care Home in Welwyn Garden City.

Being more thermally efficient and wasting less energy has become very important, not only on an environmental level, but also economically. Secondary glazing is a well-established method of greatly improving insulation within existing buildings. As the leading specialists in secondary glazing, Selectaglaze has a range of tested products that can reduce the U value of building to around 1.8 when coated in low emissivity glass. With the Pilkington Spaica glass in the S25 unit it can be reduced down even further to around 0.8. All units are designed and expertly installed with brush seals, or compression seals for hinged panels, to ensure the tightest fit dramatically reducing air infiltration to help eliminate uncomfortable drafts. Established in 1966 and a Royal Warrant holder since 2004, Selectaglaze has vast experience in working with all types of buildings throughout the UK. Visit Selectaglaze at stand C174 (ECO Build 2017) to find out more.

It prevents errors and misjudged holes from being drilled, saving tradespeople a lot of time and effort. The Cabinet Light Jig also enables the user to drill a precise hole into the back of the base cabinet panel to route the wire through, eliminating the need for wires to be hanging untidily around the side of the cabinet. As well as being used for light installations in cabinets, it can also be used to install puck lights into shelves. The Cabinet Light Jig is priced at £359 +VAT each. IKO’s #NoMorePotholes shortlisted for Marketing Excellence Award IKO PLC’s #NoMorePotholes campaign has been shortlisted for Best Use of Social Media in the highly-respected Chartered Institute of Marketing’s (CIM) Marketing Excellence Awards. This comes only a few months after IKO reached the final in two categories at the Construction Marketing Awards for the same campaign. Working with MRA Marketing, IKO is highlighting the problems that potholes cause, examining why repairs aren’t working and driving awareness of long-lasting, cost-effective solutions. The #NoMorePotholes campaign was launched a year ago and has engaged campaigners, action groups, caught the attention of cyclists, motorcyclists and car drivers and been covered in trade and consumer press. “We see the same potholes appearing, getting fixed and reappearing shortly afterwards in a never-ending cycle,” comments Andy Williamson, IKO UK Group Managing Director. “ ENQUIRY-Card 101

Users can sign up free to the BIM Centre in a matter of minutes and then use Eurocell’s new search and filter tool to find the models they need. Rather than downloading models one-by-one, they all go into a BIM basket to be downloaded en masse at the end of the process. The models downloaded by each user will also be stored in a personalised BIM Library for quick and easy access at a later date. And by signing up for automated updates, BIM Centre members will receive an email to let them know when models have changed. If specifiers can’t find the model they need, the BIM Centre has a simple ‘Request a BIM’ function which will be handled by Eurocell’s technical support team – who will always on hand to help with queries. Eurocell will also be showcasing some to provide inspiration and know-how. “We know from talking to our customers that getting the right BIM models can sometimes be a frustrating and time-consuming experience,” said Eurocell Head of Marketing Chris Coxon. “The idea behind our BIM Centre was to make everything as hassle-free as possible, and to make sure that people always have access to the latest information.” At the launch of BIM Centre it contained nearly 40 models covering Eurocell’s two most popular ranges Modus and Eurologik; that number will be growing all the time as new models are added. The models are in RFA or Revit Family format, requiring Autodesk

Revit software. The use of BIM – a 3D model with information attached to its various elements – is gaining traction across most construction sectors in the UK. This has been driven by the 2011 Government mandate that central government departments should require BIM Level 2 on all its projects from April this year with ongoing funding to push onto Level 3. The goal for the implementation of BIM is that all the organisations involved in the design, creation and operation of a building or piece of infrastructure gain better understanding of the lifetime cost and performance of the asset and its elements. This should enable better decision- making and ultimately deliver better value.

New Year, new CO2 milestone reached thanks to customers

Inta launches ActivFlo range of water conditioners

CO2. It’s the hottest topic about climate change facing us today. By partnering with the Cool Earth initiative, Fuel Card Services has proven its determination to help do something about it. And thanks to support from thousands of its customers, a major CO2. milestone was reached this New Year. One million tonnes of CO2 has now been stored safely in trees – rather than simply offset – thanks to Fuel Card Services’ most recent donation to Cool Earth’s deforestation projects in the Peru. That’s equivalent to a fleet of 5,700 cars driving to the moon and back. To appreciate this achievement, let’s remind ourselves about the importance of CO2. Think of it as Earth’s thermostat: CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) is the most important gas for controlling the temperature of our planet.

British heating and plumbing product manufacturer Inta has introduced its ActivFlo range of domestic and commercial water conditioners to the market. With 60% of the UK being affected by hard water, there is a significant market for reliable and effective water conditioners. ActivFlo and ActivFlo Pro provide an efficient solution to hard water issues and limescale buildup without requiring the addition of a chemical limescale inhibitor, the removal of any waste product, or regular maintenance. ActivFlo extends the service life and improves efficiency of heating equipment, as well as preventing costly equipment failure. The addition of an ActivFlo to an existing water system will also reduce existing limescale.

A significant new building project has recently been completed at one of the National Trust’s most popular properties in Hampshire, Mottisfont Abbey. The new development, situated on the banks of the River Test, aims to improve the entrance facilities at this historic priory and country estate - visited annually by over 250,000 people. Designed by Burd Haward Architects, the new welcome buildings are arranged around a central courtyard, raised above ground level to avoid risk of flooding and impact on the existing flood plain. Externally the shop is clad in weathering steel, the WCs in timber boarding, while the entrance area is glazed with deep timber fins to allow views through to the river and gardens beyond. In this very busy reception, the deep reveal theme is continued across the ceiling, with Troldtekt acoustic tiles cut to fit vertically between the ceiling joists. This helps to dissipate the sounds and echoes from visitors in an otherwise potentially noisy area. ENQUIRY-Card 112 ENQUIRY-Card 113 ENQUIRY-Card 114

Marmox thermoblock separates Surrey House from its Super Basement The technical challenges of tackling linear heat loss at the interface of a very large, traditionally built house from its fully subterranean precast concrete “Super Basement” have been addressed through the inclusion of Thermoblock units, manufactured and supplied by Marmox (UK) Limited. The exclusive individual property being built by Searchfield Homes in Windlesham, Surrey, offers its purchasers a stunning 17,000 square feet of usable space, including a 5,500 square foot basement that has space for a swimming pool, cinema, snooker room and gymnasium. Top three hole saw hacks ~ The challenges tradespeople face and how to overcome them ~

Materials in our homes and commercial buildings are advancing rapidly. While this is great news for designers and engineers, it poses challenges for tradespeople responsible for fitting new projects and refurbishing existing buildings. Here John Cove, marketing manager at power tool accessories and hand tool specialist, Starrett, looks at the top three hole saw hacks that can make these jobs a breeze. Whether you're a plumber, an electrician or a carpenter you will be familiar with the challenges involved in cutting and fitting various materials. Surfaces made of metal, timber, engineered wood, plastic, glass, porcelain and masonry, among others, can all require different approaches to create a clean hole. However, making some simple changes choosing the right tool for the job can increase productivity and improve finished results. Here are our top three hole saw hacks to help you do just that.

1. Cutting porcelain tiles Advancements in production techniques have made porcelain tiles more popular than ever. Although ceramic tiles are made from a soft mineral clay substrate topped with a glaze, porcelain tiles are fired at higher temperatures and pressures. This liquefies the mineral into solid glass, so the tile itself is much harder and denser, making it ideal for a wide variety of applications. However, this makes it very difficult to cut using a simple tile cutter, and porcelain tiles are also more

prone to chipping during the cutting process. When a job requires cutting holes to fit tile around cables and pipes, or fittings need to be attached to a tiled surface, always use a hole saw with a diamond-grit coated tip. The diamond coating will easily cut through porcelain, glass, ceramics, brick and stone without chipping or breaking. 2. Cutting thick steel There’s nothing more frustrating than when a tool breaks unexpectedly. Cutting steel is a perfect example of something that can cause this. Although regular hole saws will do the job, cutting thicker steel can cause the tool to become hot, quickly increasing wear on the cutting surface and significantly reducing product life. When cutting thicker steel, consider using a carbide tipped hole saw designed specifically for deep cutting of steel up to 25mm thick. This operates at a higher speed for a faster cut, preventing the saw from getting hot and wearing down. By taking such precautions contractors can increase the lifespan of their power tool accessories and deliver a higher return on investment.

3. Cut out unpleasant fumes Composite and engineered wood, including medium-density fibreboard (MDF), might provide a versatile, lightweight and strong building material for a variety of applications — from cabinets, desks and flooring — however, cutting it can produce unpleasant fumes. To overcome this and speed up the cut, some contractors will drill numerous pilot holes around the circumference of the hole and then use a hole saw to finish the job. However, this method is time consuming and doesn’t result in a perfect, clean cut. When drilling MDF, engineered and composite woods that contain adhesives, as well as plastics and plasterboard, consider using a tungsten carbide tipped multipurpose hole saw. This will deliver cutting speeds that are up to five times faster than a typical bimetal hole saw and the rapid cut will build up less residual heat, giving less time for the adhesive to reach melting temperature. Get the job done There is no reason for advances in materials to get in the way of tradespeople achieving perfection. With a little ingenuity and the help of a few specialised tools, people of all trades can stay ahead of the curve and get the job done without hassle. ENQUIRY-Card 512

DO MORE WITH EASY FILL CHALK REELS IRWINÂŽ Tools, a manufacturer of chalk reels which have been designed with the end-user in mind for more than 50 years, offers advancements to its STRAIT-LINEÂŽ Chalk & Reel line increasing speed, durability and ease-of-use for tradesmen. The innovations include larger chalk reel openings for increased speed and visibility, best-in-class line strength for fewer breaks, and enhanced usability and ergonomics. The Easy Fill & Lock Top innovation is a large, 90° locking top available on the MACH6™ Chalk Reel and provides a wide opening for convenience when filling the reel and locks securely to prevent spills. The wide opening gives added visibility into the reels, reducing user frustration and downtime by providing faster line priming while minimising overfilling – a primary cause of reel jams. The improved internal access allows users to access the spool to work out line tangles or retrieve broken lines without taking the reel apart. The MACH6™ also has an open access back panel for quick line changes and cleaning and features a hitensile line that is 2.5 times stronger than traditional lines for fewer breaks, a robust steel handle and large center clutch for increased durability and torque, as well as a wide prong hook to provide secure anchoring. The aluminium bodied MACH6™ has a 6:1 gear ratio, making it 6X faster than traditional chalk reels and is aided by a heavy-duty metal drive gear. 21b.qxp_Layout 1 25/04/2016 16:32 Page 1 “Our new STRAIT-LINEÂŽ range combines the speed, durability and accuracy our users expect from our Chalk & Reel line,â€? said Lisa Hunter, Sr. Brand Marketing Manager at IRWIN. “For more than 50 years, IRWINÂŽ STRAIT-LINEÂŽ has 2016 been. the trusted . brand in marking tools, and this next generation continues this heritage with innovations that let professionals be more productive on the job. The new STRAIT-LINE range also includes two additional reel designs to provide more jobsite options. The Speedline™ PRO, which also has the Easy Fill & Lock Top, features a lightweight ABS housing with a metal faceplate that protects a 3:1 gear ratio, making it 3X faster than traditional chalk reels when winding. The Classic, made of durable aluminium and including a 70% wider chalk fill opening than the previous model is available with either a 15m (50’) or 30m (100’) abrasion-resistant polyester line that delivers up to six strikes per pull. To celebrate IRWIN’s innovative range of products that allow tradesmen to do more on the job, the tools manufacturer is giving end-users the chance to win some DO MORE prizes when they purchase any IRWINŽ product. Up until June 30th and from participating stockists, end-users can be in with a chance of winning IRWIN Impact Double-Ended Bits or a DO MORE experience including hot air ballooning, sailing, rock climbing and much more. Mirka cleans up with new dust extractors Today, health and safety issues are becoming increasingly important and sanding tools and abrasives are made more and more efficient, with focus on dust-free applications. This development places higher requirements on the dust extractors. To meet these demands, Mirka are introducing three new high performance dust extractors to address the latest health and safety demands for L (low) and M (Medium) class models.

The dust extractors have been designed to handle multiple sanding applications and surface sizes with ease. The new range comes with a 30-litre container, easily accessible flat filter, a high performance 1200W motor and onestage turbine that creates 250mbar of suction with an airflow of 4500l/min as standard to assist in the efficient removal of particles from the area being worked on. The extractors’ innovative features include an auto start function, which ensures they only run when the tool is in use, increasing the lifespan of the product and reducing the amount of noise produced. For extra space in the work area, the flat top of the extractor can be turned into additional storage

with the ability to fasten the Mirka cases to the top of the machine, providing a complete sanding solution. The L class 230v & M class 110v models come with a push and clean filter cleaning system that is easy to use and provides a simple process to maintain a clear filter. The M class 230v extractor is fitted with an automatic filter cleaning system, which cleans the filter every 15 seconds for increased performance as standard. It also has an airflow sensor that indicates when the suction is below optimal levels (below 20m/s) and excess dust might be in the air. Pete Sartain, national sales manager – Industrial of Mirka UK, says, “We are aware of the health issues associated with dust produced from a variety of sanding applications and we believe it is important that we offer users the right tool for the job. In addition, our continued commitment to invest in our products is to ensure that they not only meet the standards expected by users but also assist in safeguarding their health and providing a dust-free environment to work in. When purchasing a dust extractor, we always recommend a full risk assessment is carried out by an independent third party professional or specialist to ensure any dust extractor is fit for the purpose intended by the customer before they buy.” ENQUIRY-Card 521

Crown Decorating Centre tops league for customer service

Pictured is former professional footballer Jimmy Carter with New Cross Crown Decorating Centre manager Mitch Singleton.

A RECENTLY opened Crown Decorating Centre has scored a winning goal by going the extra mile to help a former professional footballer. The team at New Cross Crown Decorating Centre, led by Mitch Singleton, earned high praise and thanks from Millwall FC’s Jimmy Carter when he turned to them for advice on a major decorating project. The store, which opened its doors to the Lewisham area community last year, started to build a business relationship with their local League One club and got to know the former Millwall, Liverpool and Arsenal winger who’s now a member of the Club’s commercial team. When Jimmy explained he had a renovation project which he needed help with, the New Cross experts were delighted to step up to the mark. “Jimmy said he was renovating a house in the exclusive Queen’s Crescent at Gleneagles in Scotland and asked if we could help work out what he needed in terms of paint quantities and the best products for the job. “He sent me the plans and we worked out that he’d need a pallet of 600 litres

of Crown Trade Matt Emulsion as well as quantities of paint for newly plastered walls. “Then, because the project was in Scotland, we contacted a CDC local to the project and were able to arrange for delivery to site just two days later. “People don’t realise that we can do far more than just sell paint to them. Customer service is really important to us and we pulled out all the stops to make sure Jimmy was well looked after and all his needs met. “He was so pleased with the level of service that he took to Twitter and recommended us to the 70,000-strong Millwall FC footballing fraternity, which is great for our profile. “Jimmy is very supportive of the store, so we’re proud that he put his trust in us and we were able to meet and exceed his expectations.” Jimmy added: “I have nothing but praise for Crown Decorating Centre in Surrey Canal Rd for how they assisted with my paint requirement for my house up in Scotland. “We already had an excellent working relationship with the store and with Mitch Singleton coming in as new manager this relationship really has

gone from strength to strength. “Mitch identified expertly what I needed up in Scotland, both with type of finish and also quantities of paint required. Thereafter, the logistical side of things was supremely taken care of.” There are more than 135 Crown Decorating Centres across the UK.

range of fillers and accessories including the innovative Dunlop Pro Décor range of fillers and smoothers. Dunlop Pro Décor is probably best known for its Flexible Acrylic Filler decorator’s caulk. A gunnable jointing filler for use around skirting boards and door frames, the product is highly flexible which removes the risk of cracking or de-bonding from the backgrounds. However the range also includes fast-drying deep repair products which utilise ground-breaking HydrolocTM technology to help decorators achieve a superior finish in a faster time than ever before. Unique because the mix water is used as part of a chemical reaction that dries the filler, HydrolocTM is unlike other products that dry via water evaporation. This means the filler dries evenly throughout, regardless of thickness, within at least 24 hours. In fact some products, such as Dunlop Rapid Repair Mortar with HydrolocTM and Rapid Rescue Repair Filler with HydrolocTM are dry, hard and paintable/drillable in only 90 minutes! dry and provide a ‘light’ mechanical key. Drybase Flex Membrane is a highly durable and flexible membrane for direct application to walls that have been affected by dampness and salt contamination. The fleece lined membrane can be quickly and easily applied to walls using the specially formulated Drybase Flex Adhesive. It can be plastered onto directly creating a versatile solution to the problem of damp walls, when it is not possible to stop the damp at its source. The Drybase collection offers a wide range of practical solutions and applications when it is necessary to apply damp-proof barriers over floors and walls; particularly when it is difficult to create or reinstate dampproof courses or tackle penetrating damp because of, for example, access issues.

The Drybase range from Safeguard Europe – the UK’s leading specialist in damp-proofing and waterproofing technology – is designed for use when it is not possible to protect building materials and interior surfaces from the sources of dampness, like rain penetration or rising damp. A collection of damp-proof coverings, coatings and membranes; the Drybase range aims to provide solutions to a wide range of dampness issues, whether in small residential properties through to larger industrial facilities. There are three main constituent products to the range: Drybase LiquidApplied DPM; Drybase ECS Epoxy Floor Coatings and Drybase Flex Membrane. Drybase Liquid-Applied DPM is a liquid, polymer-based barrier coating that can be used to resist penetration of water, gases – such as methane and Radon – salts and other liquids through masonry, stone and concrete. Examples of typical applications would be sealing concrete slabs prior to screeding or overlaying with underlay and laminate flooring; protecting wall and floor-embedded joist ends; and forming floor and wall junction seals in wet rooms. While usually applied by roller or airless sprayer, its liquid form allows it to also be applied by brush – making it ideal for waterproofing around masonry detailing and other hard-to-reach areas. Its polymer blend provides high integrity, elasticity and durability to the finished membrane. Correctly applied, it is water resistant to 20 metres head of positive pressure, and 10 times more resistant to methane than low-density polyethylene (LPDE). ECS Epoxy Floor Coating is a highly

durable damp-proof epoxy coating for floors and walls from. Supplied as a two-part water-dispersed epoxy resin, Drybase ECS Epoxy Floor Coating is applied in two coats using a brush or roller. Hard-wearing, stain resistant and able to withstand foot and light vehicle traffic; typical applications for Drybase ECS Epoxy Floor Coating would be treating damp and staining problems in solid concrete floors (eg garage floors); floor and wall coating for kitchens and

other food-processing spaces; warehouse and storage facilities; and light industrial factory areas to give resistance to foot and light vehicular traffic. Water-based and low odour, Drybase ECS Epoxy Floor Coating consists of a pigmented base resin component and a water-dispersed hardener component. Surface finish appearance of the surface finish will reflect the texture and nature of the substrate and, when applied, contact surfaces must be sound, clean, ENQUIRY-Card 527 ENQUIRY-Card 528

In a recent survey, we were delighted to hear qualities such as ‘reliable’, ‘professional’, ‘competitive’, ‘efficient’ and ‘helpful’ all repeatedly reinforced by our trade customers. “Despite growing at a fast rate over the past decade, we have made a point of never being complacent. Indeed, at the start of 2012 and with a network of 85 branches under our belts, we wanted to provide our customers with an even better service than ever before. “This saw us take a step back to review how and where improvements could be made, and this process remains ongoing to ensure we continue to change in line with our customers’ needs. “Streamlining our delivery service and guaranteeing that our best-selling kitchen ranges would be available within 48 hours, backed up with the ability to supply anything missing 31/01/2017 11:46 Page 1 within 24 hours, are just some of the approaches put in place to go that extra mile. “On top of this, by maintaining high stock levels of our most favoured product ranges and keeping a watchful check on what is selling well means our

Maxtop helps family on BBC DIY SOS Big Build Worktop specialist Maxtop, has worked with DIY SOS to help renovate the kitchen of a family in need.

Ian Howarth, Maxtop’s national specialist trainer added: “Having visited the Payne-Cheney’s house during the renovation, it was incredible to see so many people gathering together to give this much-deserving family the home they needed.” Maxtop’s modular quartz surfaces feature a patented interior honeycomb structure, offering the aesthetic benefits of a solid stone surface, with the advantage of a deeper 40mm profile. The unique surfaces also benefit from engineered enhancements that deliver a lightweight product which is both stronger than traditional stone and easier to install. Stephen concluded: “It was fantastic to

watch the episode last week and to see what a difference the renovation has made to this family. “We are very proud to have been involved in this project and hope the Payne-Cheney family are enjoying their new home!” For more information about Maxtop please visit or the company’s new Facebook and Twitter pages. Carron Phoenix’s Adelphi low profile sink suits the streamlined trend With today’s consumer opting for ever more streamlined looks in their homes, low profile sinks are an ideal style for the sink area. Carron Phoenix’s Adelphi stainless steel sink suits the streamlined trend perfectly boasting a low-profile design that will achieve semiflushmount looks. Plus, being an inset sink it also has the benefit of easy installation involving straightforward cut-out work. This offers an effective way to enhance the style and quality feel of a kitchen while making a client’s budget stretch further. Adelphi has a low, flat profile edge that sits just 1.8mm, literally the thickness of the stainless steel, on the worksurface. It’s compatible with all worksurface materials including granite, solid surface or quartz and is especially popular with laminate worksurfaces, where it creates designer-style streamlined looks but with very simple fitting.

The programme, which aired at 9pm on BBC One on 1st February, opted for Maxtop Quartz White Jasmine surfaces for the Worcestershire-based, PayneCheney family’s kitchen. 17 year old Antonia Payne-Cheney was diagnosed with a rare condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which is caused by a lack of collagen. As a result

of this she had been in hospital for over 12 months, unable to return home until necessary adaptations had been made to the property. Stephen Moss, managing director of Maxtop, explained: “We were delighted to be able to work with DIY SOS as it is a fantastic show that makes a huge difference to families across the UK.”

Copper – the must-have finish taking the hospitality sector by storm Copper became the go-to style for bars and restaurants in 2016 and the look doesn’t seem to be going anywhere for 2017. Häfele, a leading international manufacturer and supplier of furniture fittings and architectural hardware, has released a range of copper worktops, upstands and splashbacks, ideal for commercial use. Bars and restaurants have been eager to incorporate copper into their interiors, not only because of the authenticity it gives to an industrial-inspired interior, but also because of its functionality. It has microbial and anti-bacterial properties that make it a hygienic choice for worktops and its unique oxidisation pattern means that bumps and scratches add to the character of the metal over time rather than detracting from the finish. The warming orange glow that Häfele’s copper range offers is perfect for creating an inviting atmosphere in bars, restaurants and hotels.

2. Dove Grey One shade of grey, not fifty, is currently dominating when it comes to colour (those that aren’t white or cream of course) and that’s Dove Grey, a pale grey. It is frequently requested as either a high gloss or matt door and when paired with white walls and light grey flooring this is a kitchen that ticks all of the boxes in terms of being ‘on trend’ but is still a look that will offer longevity. 3. Clean lines in traditional homes A more minimalist look is in high demand for both traditional and more contemporary homes. The trend towards pale gloss, handless doors and drawers will continue into 2017 and all appliances are now integrated into this overall look, hidden behind doors to give a uniform look. Statement canopy hoods have made way for integrated or telescopic extractors preventing a kitchen looking cluttered and busy. Clean lined, minimalist kitchens are particularly sought-after for homes with more open plan living.

Trends in Contract Kitchen Design Key looks and must-have features in 2017 Each year sees new trends in fitted kitchen design within new build housing and renovation schemes, as developers seek to meet consumer expectation for the latest looks and must-have appliances. Barry Casement, managing director at Lanzet – one of the main kitchen suppliers to the UK’s property sector, designing and supplying fitted kitchens to property developers of all sizes, explains what trends to expect in 2017. “Many of the trends affecting the contract kitchen sector reflect what’s happening in retail kitchen sales. But unlike other areas of interior design, where there can be major shifts in neutral to bright colours and key new looks led by big brands like Dulux, Farrow and Ball and high street retailers. Changes in contract kitchen design and looks tend to be more subtle and longer term. “We have identified five key trends we expect to have most impact in 2017. 1. Mix and match colour combos Mirroring the retail kitchen sector, mixing two colours within a single kitchen design is big news in contract kitchens and this trend will continue apace in 2017. The main colour combinations in high demand are anthracite and white, taupe and porcelain and also painted wood with natural woodgrains. You can adopt other complementary colours, such as navy blue and soft grey, for a softer contrast. Popular home interest web portal Houzz calls this trend “Tuxedo kitchen cabinets”, which, put simply, explains the monochromatic effect. The idea is to apply two complimentary tones, one light and one dark. The combination often denotes different areas within the kitchens, often with one hue for the island unit and another for walled units.

Sleek in-frame solid timber doors, painted to order, are becoming the kitchen design of choice in homes at the higher end of the market, which also deliver this look. Shaker is still being specified teamed with modern handles and sleek, lighter worktops. Slab in-frame doors are also becoming popular, especially as a design combination with shaker style doors. 4. Thinner worktops moving away from laminate Laminate or granite have traditionally been the worktop of choice but solid quartz and technological innovations in granite and natural stone-effects are becoming hugely popular, especially as there’s a preference for thinner worktops; down to 12mm with quartz compared to 40mm with laminates. The bestselling solid worktop is a 20mm quartz however with some laminate suppliers now offering a 25mm square edge this is also becoming popular.

5. Storage and appliances get even cleverer in 2017 Home buyers want hi tech and smarter homes, but this doesn’t mean developers are having to spend more to meet this need as high tech becomes more mainstream. · Another minimalistic trend is extraction solutions that are flush to the ceiling and remote controlled as opposed to large ceiling mounted extraction hoods hanging above a hob on a cooking island. · Banks of appliances, or as some interior designers term it ‘the cube’, is a popular way to house ovens, microwaves, coffee machines and steam ovens within a ceiling to wall scheme. · Increased energy efficiency is on the up and will continue in 2017. Combination taps are still in high demand, but not just for boiling water; these now also include a carbonated option for instant sparkling water and chilled still water. · Similarly appliances with unique cleaning and energy-saving properties are trending. Such a dishwashers which retain the water from the final rinse cycle then releasing during the first wash of the next load thereby reducing water consumption and energy required. · Self-cleaning, Pyrolytic ovens are an increasingly popular choice, as are steam ovens incorporated with microwaves as a healthier and improved way of cooking and reheating food without losing moisture or nutrients. And thanks to the Great British Bake Off – slide and hide ovens are in high demand. · LED lighting within the kitchen design is also a key requirement in 2017 to reduce household expenses in new build properties and refurbishments. · And for power, we’re fitting more kitchens with chargers and ports directly inside drawers and cabinets to enable tablets and mobile phones to be charged without being left on show. Fads To Forget So finally, having reviewed what’s trending, Barry Casement also considers the ‘fads to forget’ in 2017. He explains: “Sparkled granite is one fad to forget. Homeowners looking for quality are no longer limited to granite countertops. Instead, they’re going for quartz, marble and butcher block countertops. “Short cabinets are being superseded by taller units that offer the sleek look that helps to make a small kitchen look bigger and brighter. “A third fad to forget in are the more traditional oak wood finishes.” ENQUIRY-Card 537

Hidden housing solutions for accessible bathrooms New research has revealed almost 2million people have unmet accessible housing needs, giving providers an

opportunity to adjust their offering to meet demand. The report*, by Habinteg and Papworth Trust, is recommending developers to review their products to deliver solutions that enable maintenance of independence in mainstream housing. Clos-o-Mat can give a single source to address prolonged independence, at least in the bathroom….. “When home adaptations are undertaken, the bathroom is the most common room in which they are Clos-o-Mat explains needed,” marketing manager Robin Tuffley. “Creating an appropriate bathroom, that includes, or can easily accommodate, certain accessibility features, from the design & build stage is therefore very relevant. Seymour Place, in the heart of Westminster, is a vibrant area between Marble Arch and the Edgware Road, which has, like much of London, seen properties undergoing refurbishment and redevelopment over recent years with one newly built apartment complex featuring luxury ensuite shower rooms incorporating Dallmer drains. ARJ Construction Ltd. was the main “Fit out” contractor, for the dozen dwelling development continuing its chosen path of the past two decades, delivering high-end residential developments. For the flats in Westminster, ARJ installed a range of different sized shower channels manufactured by Dallmer, a company which has, as its CEO Johannes Dallmer said, evolved “from a master craftsman business to an architectural brand.” Indeed, Dallmer has created a completely new category of drain fittings that combine superb design and functionality, the CeraLine W Duo shower channels being no exception. The shower rooms have been fitted out in marble and white masonry for the fashionable, ultra-modern appearance that is favoured for many contemporary interiors. Certainly, a conventional drain outlet would not have complimented this look, nor probably coped with the high water volumes flowing from deluge heads. However, the sleek linear drainage channel incorporated within the CeraLine W Duo range, finished in stainless steel, coordinates perfectly with the minimalist design. For the site at Seymour Place, ARJ was

able to fit the ideal sized channel for each room, these spanning lengths of 700, 800, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500 and 1600mm, all with a standard cover in stainless steel. Conforming to DIN EN 1253, the CeraLine W Duo linear drainage system is installed at the wall junction, with two drain bodies to choose from: outlet DN 50 horizontal and a ball-joint adjustable from 0 – 15 degrees. It features sound-insulated height adjustable leveling legs, an integral sand coated flange for secure bonding of under-tile waterproofing and removable trap insert, as well as a 50 mm water seal and tiling gauges plus a tile-trim jig. Any made-to-measure length up to 2000 mm can be supplied, while upstands can be on the back, back and one end or back and both ends - these can be set back for stone or marble wall finishes. The shower channels were purchased through Fountain Bathrooms in Derbyshire, which has been a leading stockist of Dallmer’s products for several years. ENQUIRY-Card 538

Rinnai CONTINUOUS FLOW FOR DOMESTIC/LIGHT COMMERCIAL SITES Rinnai’s Infinity range of A-rated continuous flow gas fired water heaters include domestic/light commercial units that are design engineered to guarantee the highest efficiencies, lowest running costs and least maintenance. Continuous flow - sometimes called ‘Tankless’ - water heating units are ideal for domestic properties, cafes, pub, restaurants, offices, shops, hairdressers, small commercial units, caravan parks and leisure facilities. Continuous flow water heaters are proven to be more cost efficient than traditional systems. Small businesses and domestic properties require high volumes of water at intermittent times of the day - delivered at accurate temperatures for optimum user comfort and safety. Sudden changes in water temperature, causing cold showers or scalding hot baths are a thing of the past with Rinnai's Infinity 16i water heaters. Unlike other systems available, the water temperature set is the one that is delivered. So, if a user is showering at, say 42°C, and someone turns on a tap elsewhere in the property, the temperature will not vary.

With the Rinnai Infinity units running out of hot water is a thing of the past, as the water is drawn straight from the mains, as and when needed. As the units are IPx4 rated they can be mounted in zone 2 within bathrooms. The Rinnai Infinity 16i measures 675 x 370 x 103mm and weighs in at 18kg. The room sealed unit has a temperature range of 35°C to 60°C with direct electronic ignition. Gas consumption ranges between 4.7kW34.9kW for Natural Gas and 4.9kW36.8kW when using propane. Hot water delivery flow is an impressive 16ltr max flow. Nominal operation pressure is 1-7 bar and it uses a 230V AC 50Hz 1ph power supply with an electrical consumption of 68W. The Infinity 11i is 29mm deeper, weighing 2kg less at 16kg and consumes 6.10kW-21.60kW of Natural Gas (it is not compatible with propane gas) and has an 11 litres per minute

The Grundfos SCALA2 is second to none

maximum flow. Meanwhile the Rinnai Infinity 17e unit has the added advantage in that it is externally mounted. This feature gives greater flexibility at the design stage and can offer an alternative solution where flue runs are problematic or internal space is not available. The 17e has full frost protection. A range of external ancillary items including pipe cover box and security cage are available where necessary. Capable of flow rates of up to 510 litres per hour at a 50°C rise, the 17e is suitable for multiple applications and can be specified for use with Natural Gas or propane. For more information on the RINNAI product range visit ENQUIRY-Card 584

GRUNDFOS SCALA2 is a new compact, variable speed, water booster pump that has been specifically designed and built to deliver perfect water pressure to wherever it is needed in the home. Recently launched and WRAS approved, each unit is a fully integrated water booster pump that will provide the perfect water pressure to up to 8 water outlets – even with multiple taps and showers running at the same time. The SCALA2 combines the pump, motor, tank, sensor, drive and non-return valve in one neat package. The units also offer intelligent pump control as they adjust their operation to ensure perfect water pressure at all times. Their compact size means a minimal footprint and enables them to be fitted into a small space. They also offer great value for money and with a noise level of 47 dB(A) in typical use, SCALA2 is one of the quietest boosters in its class with just one variant that is suitable for all domestic applications. SCALA2 comes equipped with intelligent pump control, and the integrated sensor detects if the inlet pressure varies or if there are several taps open and immediately tells the pump to boost the pressure. And it happens so fast that you won’t notice any change in your water pressure at all. So when the question is pressure boosting – the Grundfos SCALA2 has the answer. boiler and quickly identified Mitsubishi Electric’s Ecodan heat pump range as an ideal solution.

Home is where the heat is as Ecodan features in new Buckinghamshire development. When Matthew Homes - an experienced building company based in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire - announced that it was constructing a small development of two and three bedroom homes in Hazelmere, Buckinghamshire, it took the decision to offer a renewable technology option to potential home buyers in the form of air source heat pumps from Mitsubishi Electric. Not only was Ecodan the natural choice Hundred but it has since become a as a proven, reliable form of renewable thriving community, boasting a variety heating, the ability to provide Matthews of shops, pubs and restaurants and even Homes with an in-built remote an 18 hole golf course. maintenance and technical support was The new development consisted of a key part of the decision. eight two and three bedrooms homes backing onto woodland. In with the renew Mitsubishi Electric is well known for its development of pioneering heat pump technologies and its Ecodan system is one of the most efficient solutions on the market. Offering an affordable alternative to traditional heating systems, Ecodan features a modern, inverter-driven heat pump compressor which converts free energy from the air and upgrades it to higher temperatures, providing reliable heating and hot water all year round. The heat pumps only require a small amount of electricity to harvest, upgrade and move the heat to areas where it is needed. Installation company AP Faulkner was handed the job of fitting the heat pumps, having had plenty of previous experience in dealing with renewable technologies. Kim Faulkner, Managing Director at the company, comments: “Heat pumps are an efficient and effective way of heating a property and the cost of implementing a heat pump solution in either small scale or larger projects is dropping all the time. We expect to see plenty more of these installations in the short-term future.” As well as the obvious requirement to meet building regulations, Matthew Homes was particularly interested in offering a heating solution that was

simple to use and required little maintenance. Being easy to install and maintain, The Ecodan met all of the specified criteria. On top of this, the system is capable of significantly reducing running costs and CO2 emissions - helping to meet renewable energy targets – and is fully scalable and able to work in conjunction with other systems. Under control In order to provide the homeowner with additional peace of mind, Mitsubishi Electric’s MELCloud was installed as a simple Wi-Fi adaptor. MELCloud enables the user to control the Ecodan system either locally or remotely via a tablet, smartphone, PC, Mac or other Internet enabled device. ENQUIRY-Card 545

OMNIE UNDERFLOOR HEATING FEATURES IN OFFICES-TOFLATS CONVERSION The conversion of a former office property into half a dozen high specification apartments in the sought after Tooting district of South-West London has featured the specification of a low profile underfloor heating system from the range of OMNIE, as part of a space-saving building services strategy. The development in Althorp Road, SW17 Has been focused on a three storey commercial unit which the contractors have successfully reconfigured to form six similar sized flats that are expected to command purchase prices in the £750 K price bracket (Zoopla values a two bed flat at £797 K on the same road). While OMNIE’s design department provide detailed layout drawings for the project, along with other comprehensive technical guidance, all of the installation work has been carried out by Locksbury Services Limited from Biggin Hill in

Kent. Locksbury Services’ operatives installed the 35 mm deep FoilBOARD panels across the building’s existing subfloors: the lightweight boards, manufactured from extruded polystyrene, which has a very high compressive strength perfect for floating floors, were easily cut to fit the bay windows and the rest of the rooms’ layouts. Then 400 metres or more of the 16 mm diameter heating pipes were pressed into the unique OMNIE multidirectional channel designs, which simplified the onsite installation eliminating the need of assemble loop

and straight panels, prior to being connected back to the OMNIE manifolds, which distribute the flow from the home’s boiler. While the slightly more complex Flat 3 required a six-port manifold, the rest of the dwellings feature five-port versions supplying primary water at 550 C to the different zones. Together with the appropriate controllers and room thermostats from the OMNIE range, this arrangement will offer occupants excellent comfort levels and controllability, while getting optimum performance from the Electromax

boilers and helping to deliver energy efficiency. The Timóleon range of underfloor heating systems offered by Omnie can facilitate installations in almost any situation, including between existing timber floor joists, across concrete sub-floors or even for retrofit situations, where the overall depth has to be kept to an absolute minimum, also all OMNIE products have been tested independently at BSRIA for heat output performance. A specifiers & installers flex Infinity Solo condensing low NOX water heater is the first Rinnai product for the UK that combines the advanced technology of wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless-steel storage cylinder in one compact footprint.

When the product was first introduced Solo was adopted as a single installation product for light commercial operations such as small hotels and schools. However, Rinnai is now seeing greater penetration as installers are beginning to use them in multiples on larger projects - one installer has utilised three units for a major school academy installation. It seems the market is identifying other areas for the Solo, beyond the target market of new build and refurbishment housing projects, where it is proving its worth in larger three/four-bed dwellings where one can expect to find a family bathroom, ensuite and a downstairs cloakroom/shower. The Rinnai Solo is a versatile product it is renewables ready so the business/ building owner or householder can very easily extend the system to make fuel savings by adding solar thermal later. The 24kW-59.5kW Infinity Solo range is renewables compatible and supplied pre-fitted with a coil, meaning that the primary energy source can be renewable gains such as solar thermal, and the complementary Rinnai water heater will only apply the precise amount of gas to boost the difference in temperature. Because the Solo cylinder is stainless steel it greatly reduces the weight compared to glass lined models, which makes transportation and installation much easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders available also boast extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), which means the customer pays less to maintain the heat within the tank and the system when fitted to a renewable heat source maximises renewable gains. Rinnai’s new Solo range incorporates 35kW and 54kW appliances, ensuring that even sites with a smaller gas meter can utilise its advanced technologies. The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to

EXCITING NEW COLOURS ON GARADOR STEEL GARAGE DOORS Garador is setting an exciting new trend with the introduction of three fresh, new colours for its steel garage doors.

A new solid Rosewood and solid Golden Oak paint finish joins an attractive new Pastel Green paint finish, now offered as standard colour options on Garador’s top selling steel garage door range; which includes steel up & over doors, side hinged doors and garage side doors. These new mint and brown colour tones work well on an external home door and are befitting to properties that feature natural timber products or are surrounded by a variety of plants and greenery. The new colours have been carefully developed to provide an even wider choice for builders, homeowners and specifiers. The solid Rosewood, solid Golden Oak and Pastel Green join other recent colour introductions from Garador, including Pigeon Blue, Fir Green and Light Ivory, ensuring everyone can now find exactly the right coloured door to match the aesthetic and architectural features of their property. But it is not just the range of colours that sets Garador’s steel up & over, side hinged and garage side doors ahead. The paint quality and production techniques developed at Garador’s UK factory, including the latest in unique powder coating and electrostatic processes, ensures a deep vibrant colour that endures. Garador Managing Director Simon Hipgrave comments: “We have invested heavily in our paint production technology and this has given us an exceptional paint finish, as well as the ability to offer a assortment of colour options at reasonable prices. This is something we believe will be of real benefit to our customers and we have therefore decided to offer the Rosewood solid, Golden Oak solid and Pastel Green colours as standard on our steel garage door range.” Unlike many older garage doors, Garador’s modern range of steel garage doors are

manufactured with panels which are completely free of rivets - this provides one of the smoothest and most attractive appearances available in garage doors. The new colour options are available on all the doors in the Garador steel up & over range including Windsor and Beaumont. Find out more by calling 01935 443710 or visit ENQUIRY-Card 550

Slim Frames help Rationel windows achieve Passivhaus Standard at a lower cost WARM – Passivhaus energy consultants confirm energy efficiency in Rationel’s slim framed Danish timber window products. And comment that these windows can achieve Passivhaus Standards with slimmer frames, without thermal insulation in the frames, and at a lower cost. Sally Godber, director says: “We have found the air-tightness from a Rationel timber window product is very reliable, an essential marker for Passivhaus Standard. And where care has been taken in the window installation, the energy efficiency of the Rationel window can be better than more expensive products with thermal insulation in the frames and much thicker frames.“ Because of their elegant slim profiles, Rationel windows have more glass and less frame than many of their competitors, giving greater solar gains, and daylight for the same size windows. Sally’s energy consultancy firm WARM advises clients on how to achieve the most energy efficient buildings in the UK today. And she regularly practices what she preaches, with a new office

and a new four-bedroomed home in a Conservation Area in Plymouth. “All the hard work and attention to energy efficiency went in to the design of the building fabric itself”, says Sally of her own new home. “The choice of Rationel’s windows was crucial to us achieving our energy efficiency goals.” “The house is a really simple and robust design using methods which are known to work. And so my home looks more like a traditional house – it doesn’t have a heat source pump or large expanses of glass. We focussed on making it very simple to build,” she continues. “It’s a timber frame structure, with an insulated slab for the floor. We’ve used boarding on the inside and outside, created a void which was stuffed with insulation, rendered the outside walls, and with weather protection in the slate

cladding the upper storey we followed the local vernacular building style.” “We used predominantly Rationel top hung windows to give the opening sizes we needed in a single pane. Because we haven’t got lots of mullions it means again we have less frame and more glass (so more light and solar gains). This also has the advantage that with the restrictor on it still gives a significant opening in comparison to tilting windows.” Sally used Rationel Aura timber windows with triple glazing, top guided, side-guided and entrance doors also from Rationel. Good solid quality workmanship has

characterised Rationel’s windows and doors since the first products were shipped in 1954. Rationel was founded in Denmark and has sales offices in the UK and Ireland. The firm manufactures energy saving timber and alu clad timber windows and composite doors. Rationel is part of the Dovista Group, which consists of ten leading door and window companies in Europe. Dovista AS is owned by VKR Holding and employs 13,500 people in more than 40 countries. ENQUIRY-Card 553

Proud to help Rachel get home for Christmas When The VEKA UK Group heard, last year, how a Bedlington woman was left stuck in hospital after a devastating fall, the team were keen to help. Rachel Rudd, whose husband Darren works for Renolit, fell down the stairs at their home in April. Rachel suffered a number of injuries including a broken jaw and severe bruising to her spinal cord; which sadly left her paralysed from the shoulders down. After several months, she was transferred from the specialist James Cook Hospital in Middlesborough to a nursing home in Cramlington, where she was forced to remain, as the family home was not suitably equipped for her needs. Darren tried to secure a grant to cover the cost of modifying the house to Rachel's new circumstances, but was unsuccessful. At this point, friends and neighbours began raising awareness of Rachel's plight - and community-wide fundraising began, to build the ground-floor extension that the family needed in order to get Rachel home in time for Christmas. Keymer tiles used in relaying of period roof on The Old Vicarage Keymer’s Traditional Elizabethan and Antique roof tiles have been used to restore the roof of the Grade II listed building and period home, The Old Vicarage in Suffolk. The project, which is now completed, was undertaken by house owner Tim Pitt, who was looking to ensure that the roof of the period property was beautifully renovated with respect to its heritage, keeping the age and period style of the building feel. The new appearance and look of the renovated roof is outstanding. The building, which has been listed since 1961, was in need of a complete reroofing, and due to the Grade II listing of the property, required the tiles used to fit in with the overall aesthetic of the property. In selecting a 50/50 mix of Traditional Elizabethan and Antique tiles, the home boasts completely handmade heritage clay tiles.

Center Parcs chooses IKO Polymeric to roof premium apartments A new, premium apartment building at Center Parcs, Elveden Forest, has been roofed with materials from the only UKbased single ply manufacturer, IKO Polymeric. Roofing contractor UK Waterproofing used Armourplan P single ply membrane, IKO enertherm PIR insulation board and Spectravap (as the Vapour Control Layer) to waterproof the 2,000m2 roof. Aimed at couples rather than families, each one-bed flat in Breckland Apartments features a private balcony and includes a daily maid service. The property has 48 apartments and sits within 400 acres of beautiful Suffolk countryside, and aesthetics and quality were important considerations in its design and build. UK Weatherproofing Solutions had used Armourplan SM (mechanically-fixed) and SG (fleece-backed) roofing membranes previously and the performance and ease of installation were key factors in using IKO Polymeric products again. Maximise your existing order book with Freefoam cladding All building companies are looking for ways to expand their business. Products to upsell to existing customers, opportunities to revisit previous customers and options to develop new markets –PVC cladding could be that opportunity. There has been a huge interest in external cladding products in recent years, partly driven by aspirational TV shows like Grand Designs where it seems that every new build project features cladding in some way. Timber is still popular but homeowners are now looking for more low maintenance options – many busy families have little time or skill for the on-going re-painting and repair that timber requires. PVC-U external cladding is one of the fastest growing home improvement products. Its versatility means it can be used on a huge variety of projects from a feature wall on an existing building, an exterior finish for a new extension or to give an attractive finish to a loft conversion. Cladding is one of the quickest and simplest ways of totally transforming the look of any home. Freefoam Building Products are

specialist PVC manufacturers producing a wide range of long lasting, low maintenance cladding products. The Freefoam cladding range features a choice of a smooth woodgrain finish or Fortex® timber effect embossed boards in Shiplap, Double Shiplap and Weatherboard styles. Available in a wide variety of colours from traditional Mahogany, Rosewood and Oak to subtle ‘New England’ shades of Misty Grey and Cappuccino and more dramatic contemporary options like Anthracite Grey, Slate Grey and Black Ash. All ranges come with a high quality, purpose made, easy to fit trim system making installation straight-forward and quick. PVC-U cladding also offers significant environmental credentials, being awarded an A+ rating from the Building

Research Establishment’s (BRE) ‘Green Guide to Specification’ when installed with standard components, making PVC a real alternative to timber and fibre cement products. Commercial Director, Colin St John, explains “Cladding is fast becoming one of our success stories. As manufacturers we’re committed to bringing products to market that give our customers and

Twinfix GW Polycarbonate: The innovative alternative to Georgian wired glass One of the latest polycarbonate glazing variants available from Twinfix is a 6mm solid sheet that combines the appearance of Georgian wired glass with all the material benefits of polycarbonate.

This lightweight glazing has the same sort of dimpled surface as Georgian wired glass, which should always face the inside of a building when installed. It is also incredibly tough and durable and will withstand all that the British weather can throw at it without cracking and breaking. Having been approved for use in Grade II listed buildings, GW Polycarbonate is now being installed at traditional 600mm centres as rooflight glazing in many refurbishment projects. Whether it’s a railway station canopy or overhead glazing in a swimming pool this innovative 6mm polycarbonate glazing looks very similar to traditional Georgian wired glass, but provides the much higher levels of roof safety required nowadays, especially in public buildings. It is also less than half the weight of 6mm glass, so its use can help extend the fabric of an older building.

FAKRO Lead the Way in PVC Roof Window Innovation Do you need a window that provides greater ventilation for your home? The FAKRO PVC windows are the answer to maintaining a constant airflow in bathrooms and kitchens, so that you can breathe easy. Read on to discover more about how PVC windows from FAKRO can improve the air quality in your home or next building project. At FAKRO we believe that when you fit a roof window, you’re designing your home. One of the most important aspects of home design is room to breathe and the continual supply of fresh air.

Bathrooms and kitchens regularly become humid, resulting in damp and humidity that lingers through the home. To fight condensation FAKRO have innovated PVC windows by introducing condensation channels at the bottom and a V35 air ventilator in the head of the frame for improved air circulation. With FAKRO, you can be safe in the knowledge that you’ll benefit from high quality ventilation that makes your home more comfortable. The FAKRO V35 vent is positioned on the top part of the window frame. When fully opened, this inlet supplies fresh air up to 41m3/h at a pressure difference of 10Pa depending upon the window width. The V35 air inlet can in part discharge air when normal gravitational ventilation isn’t working properly. It’s excellent venting efficiency guarantees that a greater amount of stale and humid air is removed from the room. What’s more, FAKRO has a range of

designs to suit your home, with the choice of either white polyurethanecoated pine, PVC in white, golden oak or pine finishes. You can also opt for our unique 2for1 preSelect option, allowing you to transition between top hung or centre pivot opening, all with the flick of a switch. Platform drainage at Historic York Railway Station The original York Railway Station was built within the City Walls, adjacent to where the current station now stands. Opened in 1839 by the North Midland Railway, the structure only served trains to and from the south and the northern coalfields. However by 1873, as more passenger and goods lines were built into York, a larger station, from which trains could gain access from all directions, was needed. Opening in 1877, the new York Station took three years to rebuild. Designed by the North Eastern Railway’s architect Thomas Prosser, the curved 800ft-long train-shed roof, supported by iron columns, arched 42ft above the platforms. The station was immediately hailed as one of the great buildings in Victorian era. At the time, it was the largest railway station in the world with four massive arches and thirteen platforms. Today, the structure still impresses. Serving the busy East Coast mainline route, primarily between Glasgow Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London it is also a vital cross-route link between Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool. The station currently

copes with around 800 trains and thousands of passengers each week. With so many passengers using the station, the extended platforms, which project out from the original arched structure, are as busy as ever. The platform surfaces have been designed to gently slope inward away from the track so any surface water naturally drains towards their centre. Effective drainage of these roofed and un-roofed “outer” areas was a major safety consideration. Hauraton RECYFIX® STANDARD 100 channels were chosen for the slightly curving platforms – see photographs. The 271 metres of channelling installed were made from the company’s tough recycled Polyethylene-Polypropylene (PE-PP), all fitted with Class C 250 ductile iron “heel-safe” gratings finished in a Black anti-oxidisation coating. As each one metre unit only weighs just over 6kg, including the grating, contractor C. Spencer Limited was impressed with the ease and speed of installing the channels as all the units used easily complied with manual lifting regulations. ENQUIRY-Card 576

Perfect pointing for paving, paths and patios, Sika® Pave Fix Plus is well-known for it’s simplicity and effectiveness. One universal saddle for all DN150 lateral jobs The new multi-purpose Unisaddle FA150U has now been launched by Flexseal to offer a ‘one-size-fits-all’ lateral connection (for thick wall pipe). The Unisaddle will fit all sizes of clay or concrete main sewer or surface water pipes from DN300, including thin-walled pipe down to just 27.5mm thick. It will accept branch connections from any DN150 pipe, regardless of pipe material, with the simple addition of a Flexseal Multibush.

“The new product is the most universal of its kind and we believe it can add real value to contractors who need to make an unexpected lateral connection or those who just want to simplify the way they make lateral connections,” explained Mark Chatterton, manager of Flexseal’s R&D team, who developed the product. The product’s adaptability comes courtesy of a set of rubber shims, supplied on the product. The user simply needs to remove the correct number to achieve a secure fit onto the main pipe. Equally, the Multibush assures the perfect fit on the lateral pipe, offering 4 different permutations.

1819 LIN Homebuilding&Renovating 124x193mm_AW.qxp_Layout 1 02/02/2017 14:17 Page 1

As well as fitting more pipe sizes than other similar products, the Unisaddle will withstand an internal pressure of 1 bar, a shear load of 30 bar and the deflection on the lateral pipe can be up to 7°. The product is simple and easy to fit too, being light weight, requiring no adhesive or sealant and allowing installation without full excavation of the main pipe. “The Unisaddle is the latest addition to Flexseal’s well-established range of lateral connections,” explained Scott McMurray, Flexseal’s UK and Ireland Sales Director. “All offer a lower cost alternative to traditional factory-cast products, with the Unisaddle offering the lowest cost option to date. Our lateral connections also offer an abundance of health & safety and sustainability benefits in comparison with junctions.” continued Scott. “Our starting point when designing new products is always to think through what is important on site, as well as the limitations of current available products,” commented Mark. “By asking these questions and developing a solution we’ve proved that the Unisaddle can add real value.” ENQUIRY-Card 581
