UK public finding it harder to source skilled tradesmen The construction sector is being urged to create more apprenticeships and find ways to attract workers to the sector after new research found that over half of the UK population are struggling to hire a tradesperson. The study by IronmongeryDirect, surveyed 1,000 people who have required the services of a trade professional over the past year. Results showed that for one in six people (16%), it took more than three weeks to find a suitable tradesperson, while 13% said it took up to two weeks, and almost a quarter (24%) had to search for a week to get someone on board. Two thirds of respondents noticed a shortage of skilled professionals when trying to find a person for the job. A third (33%) of which said they noticed a shortage but eventually were able to find someone, while 3% admitted they noticed a shortage and as a result couldn’t find anyone suitable to undertake the job required. Even for those that didn’t notice a shortage, over a quarter (26%) still said they had to ring around to find a tradesperson as many were busy perhaps because resources are stretched due to the shortage of workers in the sector. The research was undertaken as part of IronmongeryDirect’s ‘More Skills Required’ report to find out what effect the skills shortage is having on the UK’s

ability to find qualified tradespeople. Furthermore, it sets out to provide suitable solutions to attract more people to the industry, and skill-up the existing workforce so they can service more people. Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said: “There has been a lot of discussion in the construction sector recently about the growing skills shortage and how the crisis will affect the industry in the future if the problem isn’t tackled. “From our research, we can already see that the shortage is having an impact on the UK’s ability to source skilled tradespeople. However, it did indicate that it’s not too bad yet, as 48% of people are generally able to find a suitable tradesperson within a couple of

days. “However, Britain’s impending departure from the EU is likely to have an effect on the labour force so it’s important that the sector takes immediate action to bridge the skills gap, and prevent the issue from getting worse. “One way to attract more talent and skills to the sector is to create more apprenticeships. Currently there are not enough young people entering the profession to meet existing work requirements, nor to replace the number of workers soon to hit retirement age. Firms could also look at upskilling their existing staff to improve workforce quality and create more specialist talent so they can take on new types of work. “It’s really important that the whole industry works together to promote the range of rewarding construction careers available in order to attract a new generation of workers, before it’s too late.” ENQUIRY-Card 137

Ten years with Halo and a new website for Patios South West Patios South West Ltd, a specialist trade fabricator of patio door systems is celebrating ten years of working with Halo, an industry-leading PVC-U profile brand of national market leaders, The VEKA UK Group. The family-run company was started in 2003 by Directors Andrew Dobbin and Mike Stevens, growing the business throughout South Wales and the South West to now produce, on average, 120 patio door systems per week, from a 4,500 sq. ft. factory in Paignton, Devon. It will relocate into an 8,000 sq. ft. factory at the end of July, to meet growing demand. “We were one of the first fabricators to adopt Halo's pioneering Imagine doorsets”, explains Andrew Dobbin. “As a trade fabricator, they represent perfect systems for us, with no end of functional and stylistic features and options to lend them to virtually any project.

20 years of Kitemark certification for The VEKA UK Group The VEKA UK Group is continuing a series of notable anniversaries in 2016 as it celebrates 20 years of its products bearing the BSI KitemarkTM; one of the UK's most widely recognised and respected symbols of safety and quality. The Group, which also marks 30 years of UK manufacturing in 2016, is consistently at the forefront of PVC-U system development. In 2005, for example, VEKA profile was used to fabricate the UK's first BRFC 'A'-rated window. And in 2007 the company opened a dedicated UK recycling plant, processing the old PVC-U frames that ultimately go into VEKA's pioneering Infinity profile. Dave Jones, Managing Director of The VEKA UK Group commented: “The BSI Kitemark is an invaluable mark of quality for all sorts of products, but particularly materials and hardware for the construction industry.

A report from the Institute for Public Policy Research offers seriously flawed conclusions, according to Fuel Card Services. The report, ‘Lethal & Illegal – London’s Air Pollution Crisis,’ has been published by the IPPR with the support of Greenpeace. Steve Clarke, group marketing manager, said: “Where the report sticks to current facts and figures, it is a respectable piece of analysis. Its proposals, however, are not rooted in reality.” He said, “Some of us at the heart of the transport sector are working every day to combat climate change, making a real difference on the front line in the rainforests”. Alumen Receives Schueco

Excellence Award Alumen, the Kettering based aluminium fabricator is delighted to announce they have received a commendation from Schueco for their work at The Longfords, Teddington, London in association with customer QDevelopments. The awards, presented for excellence in the design and installation of Schueco

systems, are a testament to Alumen’s knowledge and experience as a longstanding Schueco fabricator. Alan Robinson, MD of Alumen explains: “The Longfords - a mews development of 7 houses and a duplex apartment on a brownfield site in a suburb of Greater London - was designed by 5plus Architects to provide living spaces that

have a seamless ’flow’ between the inside and outside. Set amongst Victorian properties, this new build project with QDevelopments, demanded a blend of both modern and traditional architectural styles to contrast against its surroundings. “The large apertures that made the project that much more challenging were perfectly suited to the Schueco product range, with their generous sizing capacity and slim sightlines. To the rear of the properties, Alumen fabricated and installed the ASS70HI Lift& Slide patio and ASS70FD bifolding doorsets finished in metallic pearl/beige. Using the same finish, AWS75 tilt&turn windows were used

throughout but every single window had a different configuration of how it fitted in the cavity; some were forward, others pushed back - there wasn’t a standard way. Furthermore, the bifolding profile ASS70FD was used to fabricate the single doors which measured up to 2.7m in height. “The judges’ appreciated the modesty of the development and its use of a variety of sliding and folded systems. Louise Cotter said ‘It’s nicely restrained’, while Hugh Pearman commented: “This is a good example of a young practice revisiting the terrace typology.” Alumen’s well-made choice to use Schueco was based on the range’s clean and contemporary appearance, and phenomenal ability to offer maximum fabrication dimensions. Not just a Schueco fabricator, Alumen also manufacturer the SMART profile. They have recently also launched a range of rooflights that offer trade customers a quality, value for money, off the shelf product. Autumn will see another product launch as Alumen bring to market their own in-house designed and engineered bi-fold doors which aims to take the best of bi-fold systems currently available in terms of aesthetics, ease of installation and operation - and improve on them. For more information about Alumen, please visit their website ENQUIRY-Card 503

Insight Local Builders Database Adds Renewables

Insight Data, the leading prospect data supplier for the construction and fenestration industry, has expanded its Local Builders database to include renewable energy installers. The revised database now includes local builders, roofing contractors, home improvement companies and renewable energy installers, including solar and biomass. Helen Costeloe Hughes, commercial director at Insight Data, commented; “Sourcing a credible database of local builders and specialist contractors has been a real problem for suppliers as many trades operate under the radar. Insight Data has developed the UK’s most comprehensive database of these contractors with essential, up-to-date contact details including email addresses”. The database now stands at 27,938 senior decision makers and business owners, and gives suppliers the opportunity to segment and target local contractors of residential and light commercial new-build, refurbishment and home improvement projects. Manufacturers, distributors and merchants can subscribe just to the information they require, depending on the products they offer and their target audience.

Listers Treat Customers to 1st Class Evening The customer is always right. It’s an adage that for many businesses becomes their company mantra. An unhappy customer will leave you quicker than water down the plug hole. So imagine the work it must take keeping the same customers happy for 20+ years!

That’s exactly what Window and Door Manufacturer, Lister Trade Frames based in Fenton, Stoke on Trent, have been doing for the last 40 years and they decided it was about time they shared this milestone with some of their most loyal customers. And that is why on a beautiful August Saturday evening, 50 guests joined the Listers team on the platform of Churnet Valley Railway for a private 1st Class train journey through the gorgeous Staffordshire countryside enjoying gourmet food and fine wine. “We wanted to do something really special,” said Sales Director Phil Warren, “and the idea of taking some of our longest serving customers on a train journey symbolised the journey we’ve all been on together for the last 20+ years.” Arriving for cocktails on the platform, Listers customers had the perfect opportunity to unwind and share memories of their time working with Listers before being whisked away in a fully restored first class dining coach. There they enjoyed a fantastic three course meal with full waitress service all on-board a train which Listers had privately booked for the occasion. The celebrations didn’t end there as the Listers Marketing team had a few more surprises up their sleeve. With celebrations in full flow, every customer was presented with a professionally printed scrapbook of memories stretching back to the very start of Listers trading history and of course every customer on the train was represented inside the scrapbook. As an added touch of class, the inside front cover held another little gem as Listers presented each customer with an individual ‘Platinum’ Trade Card, laser engraved with the customer’s name to replace their well-worn trade cards which many had had for over 20 years.

“The addition of renewable energy installers was a natural progression, as many builders and home improvement companies already offer solar and other renewables. The database now gives suppliers the opportunity to target over 4,000 installers of commercial and residential renewable energy solutions including solar PV and thermal, biomass, wind turbines, ground and air heat pumps and others” added Helen. Insight Data can supply data as a oneoff list, or for regular communications an online database system Salestracker provides 24/7 real-time access to the information, with hundreds of additions, removals and changes every month, so you’ll always be using the most accurate and targeted data. “The criteria for this evening was simple,” remarked Phil, “thank customers who have been working with Listers for over 20 years. It was imperative that they understood how much we appreciate not only their business but the friendships that we’ve built over the last 2 decades.” Judging by the smiling faces, empty plates and customer comments, the evening was a big hit. One customer, Geoff Hodkinson commented, “That’s what makes Listers different. They could have simply given us a bottle of wine or a gift voucher, but the level that they went to tonight is exactly why I have been buying from Listers for more than 20 years. They go that extra mile for us customers and that means a lot.” Listers once again showed that thinking outside of the box is what has stood them apart for 40 years and being that little bit different is something that customers will never tire of. SPECIAL LIFTING PROJECT - DOMESTIC FITNESS SUITE Dudden Construction Ltd was in the process of adding an extension to a cliff side property in Fowey, Cornwall, and this was to include a fitness suite with an aqua trainer and hot tub both sunk into the floor. The client wanted the aqua trainer and hot tub to be hidden under the floor when not in use.

Dudden came up with the idea of having sections of the floor acting as covers that could be raised to ceiling height and then lowered back in place as and when required and they asked Linian Crane and Hoist Company to design and manufacture a suitable and bespoke winching system as there was not any standard lifting or winching equipment

on the market that would satisfy all the criteria and overcome the various constraints. The requirements were that the system should be unobtrusive, safe, reliable and general fit in with the high quality appearance of the finished suite. Linian designed special winches that could be installed in a very tight ceiling cavity. Each winch

had two drums and two hoist wires were paid out from each drum. The winches were to operate on 240 volt single phase power supply and be fitted with upper and lower working and safety limit switches for safe and accurate positioning. Each winch wire terminated in a cleverly designed hook/key attachment which could locate

in recessed lugs on the floor covers to be lifted. The hoist wires and attachments were manufactured from stainless steel. Attractive polished aluminium push button control stations were wall mounted in convenient positions. Ian Watson, Managing Director of Linian Crane & Hoist Company, said ““This is yet another great example of Linian’s ability to tailor bespoke lifting solutions to customer’s individual and specific requirements”. Ben Dudden, Managing Director of Dudden Construction Ltd, commented “Linian did a terrific job designing the winch system for our project. Communication was easy and efficient despite the long distance from their base. Linian were a pleasure to work with”.

Ancon Teplo reaches new heights

Terraxx takes the pressure

Following recent fire tests at BRE Global, Ancon is pleased to confirm that its innovative basalt-fibre, low thermal conductivity wall ties, Teplo-BF and Teplo-L, offer 120 minute fire resistance, making them suitable for buildings of any height (subject to structural performance), in line with Building Regulations, Approved Document B. Officially accepting the BRE’s findings, the BBA has confirmed that the fire resistance of these ties will be updated from 60 to 120 minutes in the next issue of Ancon’s Agrément Certificate (14/5160, PS2 and PS3). This extended fire testing brings to an end the previous 18 metre building height restriction on these Teplo ties. Teplo-BF and Teplo-L ties are now fully comparable with the fire resistance of stainless steel wall ties which, being non-combustible, are also suitable for buildings of any height.

Efficient protection and drainage for basements and flat roofs is offered by the high density polyethylene Terraxx range from Delta Membrane Systems, which is featured in a brochure from the company. The brochure shows how the two-ply sheet is a highly efficient protection and drainage system, and offers an ‘allround’ solution for horizontal and vertical applications on compressionresistant substrates. With its fused-on polypropylene geotextile and integrated self-sealing edge, the product offers the functions of a protection, filtration and seepage layer making it particularly suitable for herbaceous roofs – intensively planted roofs which, being thickly covered with soil, do not need an extra water reservoir, but do need high drainage capacity. New Nico designed for anyone to fit

Further Awards success for Ancon’s innovative Teplo Range

Sensio has introduced Nico, a 240V LED under cabinet light, which they boast is exceptionally easy to install. Nico features SLS (surface light source) technology which means that no visible dazzling LED points can be seen on the fitting and as the fitting runs at 240V, no driver is required. So all that’s needed is their 6-way distribution block that connects up to 6 lights and comes with a 13A plug for mains supply. No need for a Part P qualification, anyone can install the Nico. What’s more the connectors are small enough to fit through an 8mm hole for a neater finish than many models on the market. The Nico fitting has a stainless steel surround, is available in cool or warm white LED colour and can be surface mounted or recessed.

After a string of Awards successes, Ancon’s innovative Teplo range of low thermal conductivity wall ties has done it again, with the news that the new Teplo-BF has been shortlisted in the ‘Best Innovation in Insulation” category of the 2016 Build It Awards. The latest addition to the Teplo range, Teplo-BF, features the same ultra-low conductivity basalt fibre body as the original bar-shaped TeploTie, with specially moulded safety ends which make the new tie easier and safer to use and significantly enhanced mortar bond. As well as providing a thermal conductivity of just 0.7W/mK, meaning it is disregarded as a thermal bridge in ‘U’-value calculations, Teplo-BF offers an 80% increase in bond strength over the original TeploTie, making it particularly suitable for use with lime and other slow-drying mortars. Heating bills halved and property value increased thanks to Bostik Climatherm The installation of Bostik’s Climatherm external wall insulation (EWI) system has helped homeowners in Ystradowen, South Wales, to halve their heating bills and increase the value of their property by £10,000 in less than two weeks.

EWI specialists, Greener Installation Solutions Ltd, were approached by the owners of the three bedroom property, who were looking at ways of lowering their heating bills while improving the overall aesthetics of the house.

Having used the system on a number of other EWI projects in the area, the company specified the Bostik Climatherm system with grey EPS insulation and an Ashton Cream Spar dash finish. “We needed an EWI system that offered the right thermal performance and a very high level of durability as the area in which the property is located can often experience long spells of wet weather. In the past this has caused the render in other EWI systems to ‘wash off’, but we knew from experience that wouldn’t be the case with Climatherm,” said Dave Male, Managing Director of Greener Installation Solutions Ltd. The Climatherm system was supplied by the local branch of AIS Insulation Supplies Ltd in two separate deliveries, which meant on site storage requirements were significantly reduced.” Reduced heating bills “The project was funded by The Energy Company Obligation (ECO), a government scheme that aims to deliver energy efficiency measures to domestic premises throughout Britain. Having had their house valued prior to

the EWI system being installed; the homeowners were pleasantly surprised when the property was valued again on completion of the project. “In less than two weeks the value of the house increased by £10,000 thanks to the installation of the Climatherm system”, said Dave. “In addition, the homeowners went from using eight bags of coal per week to heat their house to just four bags – effectively halving their heating bills.”

Tailored solution Fully certified by the British Board of Agremént (BBA), the Climatherm system can be tailored to individual property requirements and comprises three key components – insulation, mesh reinforced base coat and finish. These can be selected from a range of products that all meet Bostik’s strict performance requirements, allowing greater flexibility in both price and performance in comparison with other EWI systems. In addition, by offering an EWI system through distribution channels, Bostik provides customers with a system where the pricing is completely

BEFORE transparent, while lead times are significantly reduced. System of choice Dave concludes: “We’ve used Bostik Climatherm on a number of projects in the area since completing the company’s approved installer course. “Our team finds the system very easy to use and it looks great, with many projects being specified because of its aesthetic appeal alone. “Bostik’s technical team is also on hand to make sure any issues are quickly resolved so that we get every job done on time and to a high standard. When it comes to EWI, Bostik Climatherm is definitely our system of choice.”

Polypipe has reinforced its position as the UK’s leading manufacturer of plastic sustainable drainage, water management and ventilation products after its products were specified in one of London’s most prestigious museums –Tate Modern. Over 350 metres of Polypipe’s Ridgistorm-XL large diameter piping system was specified in 750mm and 950mm diameters for use as an air ventilation system under a new building being added to the south of the existing gallery. The system delivers air to distribution plenums at set locations within the gallery. Polypipe assisted with structural calculations in order to engineer the pipe to an exact stiffness classification of 1.0kN/m², ensuring that the pipe was neither over, nor under specified. The project called for the Ridgistorm-XL pipe to be manufactured in varying lengths, from 1.5m to 6m. Polypipe’s dedicated in-house fabrications team also pre-fabricated more than 60 unique bends and fittings, which ranged from five degree to 90 degree bends, to ‘T’ junctions and specialist ‘S’-shaped bends in varying angles. Polypipe’s unique electro-fusion jointing of the Ridgistorm-XL system was also an integral factor in the specification of the site’s ventilation system, ensuring regulatory compliance due to its ability to provide greater air tightness and insulation than other forms of jointing. Emma Nicholls, Marketing Manager at Polypipe comments: “The project was particularly challenging, partly due to the fact that the ventilation system had to be designed to connect to fixed points within the new building, whilst avoiding the structure of the building itself. “However, our ability to engineer solutions and manufacture the system off-site in our in-house fabrications facility meant that we were able to deliver a system which met the exact needs of the client and contractor.”

Cheers all round to a wee dram of the finest paint Presenting a public face that is welcoming and pristine is vital for any visitor attraction. And when you’re one of Scotland’s most historic whisky distilleries, playing host to thousands of guests in the picturesque Perthshire hillsides, you need to look your best all year round. However, when you’re not a paint and coatings expert, knowing what products to use to create that all year round wow factor can be tricky. For Andrew Symington, the owner of Edradour Distillery, near Pitlochry, it was a problem solved when he built up a trusting business relationship with Crown Decorating Centre manager Austin Myers. The idyllic site is kept looking in top condition with Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth masonry paint on the whitewashed distillery and cask store buildings, Crown Trade Gloss in Geranium for the distinctive coloured doors, Sadolin Superdec and Crown Trade Fastflow on its attractive wooden fencing.

Meanwhile, in Edradour’s stylish Tasting Bar and Conference Room a variety of complementary Sadolin products have been tastefully blended using Sadolin, Classic, Sadolin Clearcoat and Sadolin Extra Durable. Said Andrew: “Edradour is the smallest traditional distillery in Scotland and arguably the most unique. Dating back to 1825, it stands alone as the last stronghold of handmade single malt whisky from a farm distillery still in production today. The site is a five-star attraction so we have a constant rolling programme of painting to ensure it always looks its absolute best. We have thousands of visitors every year and our business is growing rapidly. There are a mixture of old and new buildings and

British paint, varnish and wood care manufacturer, Polyvine has launched a new professional exterior wood finishes range which is VOC-free, quick-drying and which has the highest oils solids content of any product in the market. This makes it the best formula for long term durability and appearance retention available in the UK. The seven product range is made from 100% oil solids. This refers to the minute oil particle content undiluted by other materials, which ensures thorough coverage, long lasting protection, durability of finish, appearance retention and low maintenance. Oil solid content in all competitive wood care products is circa 50% at the maximum with many being less than that. This gives the new Polyvine range an enormous performance advantage against anything else in the exterior wood care market. ENQUIRY-Card 112

we are in the process of developing the site even further. We started using Crown Paints back in 2002 when we had facilities in Edinburgh and just continued the relationship when we moved up here. The range of products are great and I like the new innovations such as Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Drying Gloss which looks fabulous on our picket fences. The Crown Decorating Centre team are great and the service they provide is fantastic. We can’t fault them.” Austin Myers, manager of the CDC in nearby Dundee added: “When I joined the company in 2010 Andrew bought and paid for paint from us as and when he needed it. He was reluctant to set up an account but when I explained the terms would be more cost effective, especially in the volumes he was buying, he realised that it made sense. “Andrew knows his stuff about painting products and is very hands-on at the site, but we do also give advice on what paints and wood stains will work best for him. I’ll go out and talk him through new products, like the new Crown Trade

Fastflow Gloss which they also now use. “When we need to make a delivery to Edradour there’s always a tussle for the keys to the van because it is the most amazing place to visit. We supply them with 250-300 gallons of paint a year along with brushes and rollers and we’ve even supplied them with a scaffolding tower. The way we work with Edradour is a great example of how we can give the best customer service – it’s a winwin situation because we value their custom and they also value our expertise.” For Edradour their hard work in creating a stunning visitor attraction is certainly paying off. Business is booming and work is now under way to build six vast new buildings to treble their cask storage capacity.

TRITON extends liquid applied

Paints, Coatings, Sealants & Fillers 21

Priming for Success - FLAG Paints Ltd has launched the Advanced Technologies range.

waterproofing range

Triton has extended its range of liquid applied waterproofing products to offer a wider choice of systems primarily for the reliable waterproofing of roofs and podium decks. Each of the three new systems provides Type A barrier protection waterproofing as defined in BS 8102 (2009). They are quick and easy to apply, very fast curing and suitable for application in cooler temperatures – therefore extending the season for application and reducing the downtime of areas treated. TWS-Poly H produces a totally seamless waterproof surface on prepared concrete and can be applied by squeegee, brush, trowel or roller. The 2-component polyurea formulation is ideal for waterproofing pitched or flat roofs, decks and balconies and other areas where a degree of flexibility is required. The trafficable, cured surface also makes it suitable for waterproofing concrete floors in car parks etc. TWS-Poly H can also be applied to internal and external walls. TWS-Poly S is another fast curing, 2component polyuria formulation but designed for application by a twin nozzle, heated spray unit. Offering excellent bonding strength and crack bridging capability, TWS-Poly S can

be combined with geotextiles to obtain on-site applied, seamless liners or coatings in tunnels or canals or used to waterproof pitched or flat roofs. The cured surface allows for building movement and is trafficable and highly resistant to abrasion. Single component TWS Fastcoat cures as an elastic and seamless layer that offers excellent weather resistance and can withstand permanent water contact. A key feature is its ability to deliver a combination of root barrier and waterproofing layer, therefore reducing the number of layers required in green roof construction. Applied by brush, spreader or airless equipment, its cured surface can be lightly trafficked making it suitable for low pitch or flat roofs and balconies. Liquid applied waterproofing systems can deal with complex shapes and contours where joints or folds in other waterproofing materials might cause a weakness. Technical support on the specification and installation of all Triton’s waterproofing systems is available from Triton’s technical team. Installation guidelines and data sheets are also available for download at ENQUIRY-Card 522

The new range of primer products aims to raise awareness of how to deal with difficult problem areas by selecting the right solution for the problem. The primer is often the most important coat, if the primer is wrong the rest of the paint system is highly likely to fail. The new range, which is universally compatible with most traditional topcoats, represents a concise selection of essential problem solving primers. The range features 4 products, designed to help address various issues affecting a wide range of areas around both home and commercial environments. Universal Primer (Water Based) Effectively primes, seals and blocks stains for a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces. A ‘bond coat’ primer that’s great for hard-to-stick surfaces, offering excellent adhesion with minimal preparation. Also prevents rust formation when applied over clean ferrous metal such as iron and steel. Universal Primer contains a biocide that protects the dried coating against fungal degradation, making it ideal for highhumidity areas such as bathrooms and utility rooms. Ultimate Primer (Shellac Based) Offering excellent adhesion to glossy surfaces - even glass. Blocks stubborn and persistent stains. Based on an advanced shellac formula that seals porous surfaces with excellent enamel holdout. Suitable for use on water stains, fungal degradation, nicotine, oil stains, marker pen stains and more. Designed to permanently block odours (from smoke and fire damage to odours

from pets and nicotine). The dried film is non-toxic and hypo-allergenic. Stain Cover + (Solvent Based) An interior / exterior primer/sealer, stain sealer and bonding coat that dries for over-coating in only two hours. Stains of all kinds are permanently sealed so topcoats are blemish free, and is especially effective on nicotine and water stains. Can be primed, sanded and top-coated the same day, saving time and money. Designed to resists cracking and peeling and is compatible with most decorative top coats. Omni-White (Water Based) Contains a biocide that protects the dried coating against fungal degradation. This paint is designed to resist cracking, peeling and blistering to avoid constant maintenance. Omni-White bonds to existing painted surfaces and promotes adhesion on a wide range of surfaces with minimal preparation. Omni-White also seals porous surfaces and is ideal for use in areas of persistent high humidity, frequent temperature changes and poor air circulation. A primer and finish coat. Washable, scrubbable, stain and moisture resistant finish. Self-priming – adheres to the surface with minimal preparation. A fade resistant coating. Water-based, low odour and quick drying. 22 Tools, Site Equipment & Workwear . View our publication online at . August 2016 . most tools, this is rarely something that happens out of the blue, but is rather caused by long-term wear on a tool that can lead to a sudden break. When cutting thicker steel, consider using a carbide tipped hole saw designed specifically for deep cutting of steel up to 25mm thick. This operates at a higher speed for a faster cut, preventing the saw from getting hot and wearing down. By taking such precautions contractors can increase the lifespan of their power tool accessories and deliver a higher return on investment.

Top five hole saw hacks ~ The challenges tradespeople face and how to overcome them ~ The materials and technologies in our homes and commercial buildings are advancing rapidly. While this is great news for designers and engineers, it poses challenges for tradespeople responsible for fitting new projects and refurbishing existing buildings. Here John Cove, marketing manager at power tool accessories and hand tool specialist, Starrett, looks at the top five hole saw hacks that can make these jobs a breeze. Whether you're a plumber, an electrician or a carpenter you will be all too familiar with the challenges involved in cutting and fitting various materials day to day. Surfaces made of metal, timber, engineered wood, plastic, glass, porcelain and masonry, among others, can all require different approaches to create a clean hole. 01835 863501

1. Cutting porcelain tiles Ceramic tiles have been around for centuries, so we’re all used to seeing them on everything from flooring and kitchen backsplashes to bathrooms and even as decorative murals. Advancements in production techniques have made porcelain tiles more popular than ever. Although ceramic tiles are made from a soft mineral clay substrate topped with a glaze, porcelain tiles are fired at higher temperatures and pressures. However, the hardness of the tile makes it very

difficult to cut using a simple tile cutter, and porcelain tiles are also more prone to chipping during the cutting process. When a job requires cutting holes to fit a tile around cables and pipes, or fittings need to be attached to a tiled surface, always use a hole saw with a diamondgrit coated tip. The diamond coating will easily cut through porcelain, glass, ceramics, brick and stone without chipping or breaking. When accompanied with proper watercooling, you will be left with a clean cut and smooth surface finish. 2. Hole enlargement Turning up to a job fitting downlights and realising that the 75mm super low voltage spotlights that the customer has specified need to fit into the 50mm holes left by the previous lights can put you in a bit of a pickle. Where it would normally be suitable to simply drill a 75mm hole to fit the light, here there is no obvious way to pilot the 75mm hole saw. In this case, consider replacing the pilot drill with a hole enlargement arbor. The arbor can be fitted with a hole saw that has the same diameter as the existing hole — this acts as the pilot — as well as a larger diameter hole saw, allowing the larger diameter to be cut in one single motion. 3. Cutting thick steel There’s nothing more frustrating when a tool breaks unexpectedly. However, for

4. Cut out unpleasant fumes Composite and engineered wood, including medium-density fibreboard (MDF), might provide a versatile, lightweight and strong building material for a variety of applications. To overcome this problem and speed up the cut, some contractors will drill numerous pilot holes around the circumference of the hole to be cut and then use a hole saw to finish the job. However, this method is time consuming and doesn’t result in a perfect, clean cut. When drilling MDF, engineered and composite woods that contain adhesives, as well as plastics and plasterboard, consider using a tungsten carbide tipped multipurpose hole saw. This will deliver cutting speeds that are up to five times faster than a typical bimetal hole saw and the rapid cut will build up less residual heat, giving less time for the adhesive to reach a melting temperature. 5. Dust and debris Most contractors will testify that one of the biggest pet peeves of customers is site cleanliness. Many solutions have been tried included shoe boxes with holes drilled in them and various arrangements involving vacuum cleaners. When sawing or cutting using a hand held power tool, a debris collector attachment that can catch the dust and debris created during the cutting process, ready for easy disposal, can make things so much simpler. Not only is this quicker, with time saved on clean up, it also eliminates the need to mask high-risk areas prior to sawing or cutting and prevents the ingress of dust and debris into your power tool's motor housing. Get the job done There is no reason for advances in materials and design technology to get in the way of tradespeople achieving perfection. With a little ingenuity and the help of a few specialised tools, people of all trades can stay ahead of the curve and get the job done without hassle. ENQUIRY-Card 524

This new layout delivers greater stroke performance and reduces vibration in operation. The range has expanded with the launch of the new Makita DJR360Z 36v reciprocating saw powered by two standard 18v Lithium-Ion batteries directly fitted to the tool to supply energy to the powerful 36v DC motor drive system. The new Makita cordless reciprocating saws have a longer 32mm stroke – the same as the mains powered machines giving a maximum cut in wood of 255mm and will cut through a 130mm diameter pipe. The new drive train reduces vibration levels in operation: for example with the DJR186 model vibrations are reduced from 19.5m/s down to 13.0m/s when cutting board which is effectively a 30% reduction.

The Makita DJR186 18v LXT reciprocating saw will deliver 2,800 strokes per minute with the new crank mechanism, weighs just 3.8kg and is supplied as body only or with two 4.0Ah batteries and charger. The new Makita DJR187 is a 2-speed reciprocating saw with Brushless motor that will run up to 2,300 spm in low speed and 3,000 spm in high speed. Blade speed is controlled by the variable trigger on the soft grip handle with the electronic 2-speed controls also conveniently placed. All Makita reciprocating saws have tool-less blade holders using an easy-to-use twist lock system. The DJR187 weighs just 3.7kg and the new drive train and shorter BL motor enables the body housing to be reduced making this a compact, powerful and lightweight machine. With LED job light, electric brake, safety lockoff switch, retractable joist hook and tool-less shoe adjustment this versatile machine is supplied either as body only or complete with two long running 5.0Ah batteries and charger. At the top of the cordless range of reciprocating saws is the new twin 18v Makita DJR360Z 36v Brushless motor machine which offers all the same performance and features as the 2speed 18v model but with greater motor power and extended run time and features an ergonomically designed handle with soft grip. This model is also available sold as a body only machine complete with a durable hard carry case.

The highly efficient Brushless motor is controlled by the variable speed trigger with the two mechanical gears selected by the slide control on top of the motor body. The overall body length is just 168mm and this tiny 1.3kg drill has ergonomic soft grip, an LED job light and belt clip. Two additional new products feature these same performance attributes: the new Makita DF332D Brushless drill driver and the latest DF032D ¼” Hexdrive chuck drill driver. Both are equally compact, the former weighing just 1.2kg with an overall body length of just 154mm, and the DF032D model weighing 1.0kg and measuring only 124mm front to back. All three machines are supplied either as body only, or with two 2.0Ah batteries and a DC10SA fast charger, and a MAKPAC Type 1 connector case. The new Makita JV101D 10.8V CXT jigsaw will run up to 2,900 strokes per minute to achieve the most efficient cutting. This useful jigsaw has three orbital settings and bevel angles from 0° to 45° left or right. The comfortable ergonomically designed handle gives perfect machine control with variable speed trigger while the rear battery location gives excellent machine balance.

Makita has introduced five further 10.8V tools including a new combi drill, drill driver and impact driver featuring the innovative Brushless motor, and a new CXT jigsaw and 85mm tile cutter. These new models also feature the new 10.8V slide-type Li-Ion battery which allows easier removal. The new Makita HP332D 10.8V Brushless combi drill will drive an 8mm bit through masonry and drill a 28mm hole in timber. This two-speed combi will run at 450rpm in Low speed and up to 1,500rpm in the High speed setting, generating up to 6,750 blows per minute in Low and up to 22,500rpm in High, with corresponding torque of 21Nm and 35Nm. There are 20+ drill settings that can be selected by the

grinders to range

Makita introduces six new heavy duty mains angle grinders in 110v and 240v formats each with a powerful 2,000w motor; three machines have 180mm diameter wheels and three have 230mm wheels.

These machines have highly durable motors for heavy duty operations and a more rigid motor housing for improved robustness. Each has a flat top surface which keeps the machine stable when the wheel is being changed. These grinders have an overall lighter weight design; a new style of side-grip that provides better machine control and operator comfort, and a newly designed spindle lock which makes it easier to lock the wheel for changing

requirements of many types of industry. The three new 180mm grinders, the Makita GA7060, GA7060R and the GA7061RX02, will accommodate wheels up to 6.5mm thick and run up to 8,500rpm. The GA7060R model features the Makita Soft Start torque control electronics and Anti Restart protection. This requires the operator to switch off the machine if the power source has been cut, eliminating the risk of the machine restarting without the operator being in full control. The GA7061RX02 model also includes these features plus the SJS2 Super Joint drive system that greatly reduces vibration to just 7.0m/s² when grinding and as little as 2.5m/s² when cutting. This powerful 180mm range weighs from 5.3kg to 5.5kg for the GA7061 model. The three models in the Makita 230mm angle grinder range, the GA9060, GA9060R and GA9061RX02 models, will run up to 6,600rpm and carry the same high specification features as the smaller models with an even lower maximum vibration rating of 6.5m/s² when grinding. Makita has a comprehensive range of top quality grinding wheels and sanding discs to compliment the high performance of these new, heavy duty grinders.

Makita’s clever MakPac range now has trolleys, storage trays, drill & bit sets Makita’s useful MAKPAC storage cases are supplied with many of the 600+ products available in the portfolio but can also be bought independently and clipped together to make a sturdy and secure travelling pack to carry tools and accessories. To compliment this ingenious case system Makita has introduced a twowheeled folding trolley, the TR000000001, which will carry a variety of MAKPAC cases, with their contents, to a maximum load of 125kg. It is recommended that this is limited to 60kg if stairs are to be negotiated. The handle pushes down into the frame and the forward carry base folds up to reduce the trolley to a convenient and compact size which will fit easily into a van or in the workshop. An adjustable webbing strap secures the stacked MAKPAC cases to the trolley while the large diameter ABS moulded wheels allow easy movement even over rough terrain on site. A new 4-wheel deck trolley, the P83886, is also now available which is ideal to create a moveable tool stack for use in the workshop or on smooth floors on site. Lockable wheels keep this trolley stable and it will carry a load of up to 100kg with ease. Further innovative elements for the MAKPAC system include new divider insert trays for convenient storage of

hardware, components and accessories. One tray has coloured compartments for quick and easy identification of frequently used items. An open tool box is also available for storing larger frequently used items. Three new drill and bit sets have been introduced to the popular Makita accessory range and are supplied in moulded trays within type 1 MAKPAC cases. These include 66 piece, 69 piece and 71 piece sets that carry a variety of HSS drill bits, wood drills, hex shank flats and a comprehensive selection of 25mm and 50mm screw bits, nutsetters, quick change ¼” hex shank and magnetic bit holder. These useful kits are available from Makita’s distributor network now. ENQUIRY-Card 532

Impressive sliding doors installation from Patiomaster South West Member Millennium Windows and Doors, a customer of PatioMaster, has recently finished a sliding door installation on a modern coastal property, the results of which are spectacular, as Sales Manager Steve Rushton explains. “The customer did originally want bi-folding doors, but we recommended he look at sliders as the view would be obscured with bifold pillars. The 2 x four pane and 2 x two pane doors now maximise the view and flood light into the property, giving a complete wall-towall view of the sea.

“The customer also choose 6mm self-cleaning glass, as due to the property’s location it gets a lot of spray from the sea. Extremely pleased with the finished result, the customer requested an additional 4 pane door be fitted around a built-in outdoor BBQ area, which complements the overall look brilliantly.” “Millennium Windows has been working with PatioMaster for around 14 years now, and as Steve says, has never experienced any production issues. “PatioMaster offers a premium quality product, with superior performance and design flexibility, and that suits our brand in PVC perfectly.

issues with installation or the production.”

“The wide range of colours enables us to colour match to our windows and other PVC products and we like the motion of the doors, plus the guarantees are great, with ten years on mechanisms. All these factors attribute to us using, and recommending, PatioMaster doors. We install a lot of PatioMaster sliding doors and never experience

GET SPACED OUT WITH GARADOR SECTIONAL DOORS! In modern buildings, space is always at a premium inside and out, and driveways are noticeably shorter today on many properties.

So it is no surprise that Garador’s Sectional garage doors are now a top seller across the UK. These superbly engineered doors open vertically then horizontally on tracks back into the garage, eliminating the problem of losing driveway space through standard up and over doors, which ‘kick out’ on opening. There is another benefit too….Garador’s Sectional garage doors run on metal tracks that travel vertically and then horizontally into the top of the garage. Along with their great practicality, many choose Garador’s Sectional garage doors to enhance the look and style of a property. The doors come in a wide variety of surface finishes, designs and colours, including ribbed and panelled versions, elegant Georgian style and small and even ultra modern large linear, ensuring anyone can find exactly the right style of door to suit their property. Better together – making ventilation a breeze

Occupying a Victorian warehouse building in Ladbroke Grove, West London, Walters Workshops is a creative oasis for artisan workshops and music recording and is where Adele's smash hit 'Rolling in the Deep' was first demo recorded. As part of the initial phase of a refurbishment programme, original cast iron windows were overhauled and 38 new bespoke steel windows were manufactured and installed by Steel Window Association member, West Leigh. For the building’s front façade, West Leigh used W20 sections to manufacture 15 windows which were installed on the ground, first and second floors. The original cast iron windows at ground floor level, freeing the vents and ensuring they would open and close satisfactorily. The frames were then prepared and painted by 4Front Interiors, the project’s main contractor.

Two of the leading names in door and window architecture - GEZE UK and Kawneer - have joined forces to launch a superior ventilating window. Kawneer’s high thermal performance AA®720 parallel opening window combines with GEZE’s award-winning Slimchain window drive to produce a window system which is suitable in any sector, be it residential, healthcare, education, commercial, retail or leisure. The combination of attributes provides ventilation around the entire window perimeter without detriment to safety and security while achieving U-values of 1.5 W/m2K for a CEN sized window with a warm edge spacer, offering exceptional levels of natural ventilation and air exchange, with a 86mm clear opening restriction as standard. The new and innovative CE Marked assisted-opening system has been fully tested to the PAS 24:2012 enhanced security performance standard as well as BS 6375 Part 1 (weather) and Part 2 (strength). Butlin’s, Minehead: positive response to chalet refit Ratings from guests at one Butlin’s resort increased by 11% after a refurbishment including windows and doors by Wrekin Windows. Butlin’s resorts, offer family breaks throughout the year, with additional live music events exclusively for adults, on selected weekends outside of key family holiday periods. This means any replacements such as windows and doors in chalets presents a number of specification challenges that might be less common elsewhere. Not least of these is that the closed season for any refurb and refits is just six weeks and even then, occasional events can curb weekend working. All of those challenges were in play when Wrekin Windows was chosen by the brand’s owner, the Bourne Leisure Group, to replace the windows and doors in 234 of the chalets at Butlin’s Minehead resort, as Richard Camp,

Regional Contracts manager explained: “Bourne Leisure had seen the Profile 22 PVC-U Flush Sash system at a trade show and were impressed that, among other things, its flush design meant it could not be forced from outside by putting fingers under the sash. “On the inside, window handles had to be non-locking, so no key to lose – and no risk of anyone forcing a window as a result. There were of course window restrictors for the safety of children. These were also fitted to the top of the frame so they were out of reach and almost out of sight. Similarly, with the doors, each had a chain but it was fitted near the top of the door and frame.” The specification of the doors did offer one additional challenge, he added:

“Each one had to have the original cardreader lock put back on the new door and it had to be the correct one for every single chalet; just one on the wrong door and they would have had to re-programme every lock on the site.” Wrekin Windows, part of the Epwin Group, completed the contract within the six-weeks and in time for a big Valentine’s Day event. However, that timeframe also included several weekend breaks, as well as fitters having to mesh with other workers replacing carpets, electrics, boilers etc. The only activity possible outside of that period was that the first week’s windows and doors could be delivered before Christmas and stored on site so that the fitters could begin on the first day back

after New Year. Richard Camp credited Butlin’s and the other subcontract workers for helping the entire exercise to go smoothly. Guests at the resort since the refit were clearly impressed with warmer and brighter accommodation; Butlin’s is keen on gathering feedback from all visitors and reports that the rating for the refurbished premises showed an immediate increase of 11%. Butlin’s Head of Property, Ian Cutler said that every contractor’s performance is reviewed after each annual capital investment programme is completed. He continued: “We are planning our 2017 capital programme and we will be agreeing that plan in the very near future to enable us to plan appropriately for works to start in the autumn and early 2017. Wrekin are very much part of our thoughts.” Of Wrekin and the contract itself, he said Bourne was impressed not only with the look, feel and quality of the windows, but also “how accommodating Wrekin are in getting the exact specification that Butlin’s requires.” part of the Bourne Leisure group

£25K SHOWROOM REFURB FOR PATIOMASTER CUSTOMER An installer of PatioMaster has recently completed a £25k showroom refurb, with modern sliding door displays. Northern Ireland’s Budget Windows & Conservatories has been a customer of PatioMaster Northern Ireland since 2010, when they were recommended to PatioMaster from another customer, and haven’t looked back since, as Managing Director David Evans explains. “Since we started installing PatioMaster sliding doors, we’ve had none of the issues that we have experienced with other manufacturers. In fact, once they

are installed we can almost forget about them; they are virtually indestructible! Since we started trading 22 years ago we have changed fabricator four times, but four years ago we made the decision to use PatioMaster Northern Ireland for 100%, and we really believe that no other PVC-U manufacturer can offer the reliability that PatioMaster does.” Initially the company were going to build a display of aluminium bi-folding

doors in the 10,000 sq ft showroom, but after a consultation with PatioMaster, they decided to go for grey on grey 4 pane sliders, which fit in with the modern flat roof extension that was built in place of a large, old conservatory. “Customer feedback told us that people are moving away from bi-folds and towards patio sliders and since the refurb sales have increased over 400%, with special order colours up 6%. We used to shy away from sliders but they are the preferred choice of door now for customers, as opposed to being a product they end up getting talked into. We are installing four a week now, from 2, 3 and 4 pane options.” David continues. The company are already at four times the amount they were trading at last year, and David believes this is attributed to the ease and popularity of the PatioMaster sliding doors. “Across the board the whole package is appealing. You can find cheaper doors

sure, but the quality and reliability of PatioMaster is unbeatable. Our association with the brand and the choice of products has given us a competitive edge, and allowed us to offer something a little more exciting and unique. The refurbishment has resulted in a huge increase, not just in the amount of orders we receive but also the order value.” PatioMaster is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of in-line sliding doors and works through a small network of local craftsmen. Guardian is UK’s First Manufacturer to Satisfy New Conservatory Roof Replacement Guidelines.

A solid roof manufacturer with the UK’s largest network of conservatory roof replacement installers has become the UK’s first replacement roof manufacturer to satisfy new guidelines. Every manufacturer in the country should comply with the new LABC guidelines by September. But Guardian has already submitted their product for rigorous independent testing. This testing has to be completed with the BRE in London. This includes the use of WUFI software to measures the U value and the interstitial condensation risk. Guardian has passed and already received test certificates for both the UK and Scotland.

LABC approval. It’s often one of the first our new installers ask us about Guardian Roof. And, their customers ask about it too. In fact, LABC approval can often be the difference between winning and losing business. It is that important.” The newly re-issued guide clarifies how translucent conservatory roof with any solid roof systems should be replaced to achieve LABC Registered Details certification. The guide also outlines the conditions installers are expected to meet to ensure the structure complies with the Building Regs.

For Guardian Joe Kearney said: “Local authorities and private building control companies have a crucial role in managing quality standards in our industry. And we welcome the rigorous and transparent LABC guidelines that we expect them all to now work to.

The guide covers specific advice about inadequate foundations that could move and cause settlement differences between the conservatory and the existing house. This can lead to cracks and water leakage. The guide also focuses on inadequate window and door supports to take the additional load of the replacement conservatory roof.

“The regulators and guidelines combine to help our installers and their customers make smart decisions about the roofs they choose. These regulations are specifically designed to protect the homeowner. Many people ask us if we have

Joe adds, “We now have over 350 Team Guardian installers. Our own standards already meet the standards covered in the new LABC guide. But the guide will now become an integral part of our Team Guardian training and development.

If I was an installer, I’d insist on it. Just like customers should insist on meeting LABC standards as a basic necessity.” “We will also insist on a whole raft of additional unique minimum standards too. We are the only UK manufacturer that supplies every component including the required insulated plasterboard. All required components are delivered to site for every installation. This ensures that the homeowner gets exactly what they are paying for. It’s the way we have worked from day one. THE COLOUR REVOLUTION: HERE TO STAY? Are you joining the colour revolution. The days when PVC building products were only available in white are rapidly disappearing. Colour specialist Freefoam Building Products has always been at the forefront of promoting choice to the homeowner and championing change in options for roofline and cladding products and are now seeing this major trend towards colour continue with an increase in the sales demand for grey products. Freefoam statistics confirm this growing momentum across its roofline range for grey products. With combined sales of Storm Grey, Anthracite Grey and Dark Grey fascia up an amazing 77% year on year, window trims up over 100% and Freefoam’s Plastops pin and nail fixing range up 53% the grey revolution is on its way and here to stay. The shift in demand can be traced back over recent years as the economy began its journey out of recession. Housebuilders started to look to differentiate their offering with kerbside appeal by providing home buyers with choice of colours for window frames and doors. Using colour is a quick and cost effective design feature that brings a contemporary feel to exterior façades of both new home and apartment developments. It’s a trend that has steadily grown all around the UK and is now used by many major housebuilders. Freefoam stockist Willmotts of Reading has many years of experience working with national housebuilders, George Petts commented “Willmotts have seen sales of coloured Roofline & Cladding products increase dramatically, particularly

over the last 3 years, as the visual presentation of new houses becomes even more important. Style matters, and coloured roofline is now seen as the first statement of this style development witnessed by prospective purchasers. In our opinion, Freefoam have got it right. Their Colormax range is excellent, the quality of the colours, their performance, and the attention to detail of board sizes, trims and fixings, offers House-Builders the best all-round package of coloured PVC. One of our first developments was an Apartment Block in Reading in 2007, and 9 years on the colour is as fresh as when the product was installed, with no sign of fading. We see the opportunity for colour growing even more, and are sure that Freefoam will be at the vanguard of this developing market, building on their strengths and reputation”. As with many trends within the building industry changes and new developments within the new build sector soon filter through to the renovation and refurbishment market. Homeowners still find improving an attractive proposition and a real alternative to moving. A survey by respected financial website This Is reports that adding a home extension, kitchen extension or  loft conversion  to a home can increase the value of a property by between 5 and 15% as well as creating the extra space needed for changing circumstances, all without having to go through the hassle of a move. Many kitchen and extension projects are featuring bifold doors, with all the major fabricators and manufactures reporting rapidly growing sales. With the most popular colours being grey, black or aluminium the addition of this feature has fuelled the demand for grey fascia, soffit, trims and guttering.

Colin St John, Freefoam Com

mercial Director

Colin St John, Commercial Director, summarised “We believed in colour roofline from the start and are delighted that our commitment to extending product range is delivering significant increase in business. It’s interesting to see how new build has influenced the replacement market. The future is always difficult to predict but we can only see colour, and particularly grey, becoming a larger proportion of total sales. Could this be the catalyst for the long overdue dawn of a new era in the replacement and refurbishment home improvement market as discerning homeowners choose to bring their home into the 21st century?” ENQUIRY-Card 547

Bradstone Roofing Enhances Mix Design Bradstone has enhanced the mix design of its reconstituted stone roofing portfolio to offer better colour pigmentation and increased environmental credentials to customers. A change in pigment added to the mix has resulted in a deeper, richer colour and better aesthetic finish across the Conservation, Cotswold, Crofters and Old Quarried ranges, while the introduction of recycled aggregates is offering a more sustainable solution for specifiers. Jeremy Lee, Sales Director for Bradstone Roofing, comments: “We have always prided ourselves on roofing products that replicate the aesthetics of natural stone. The improvements we’ve made to both the colour and the environmental credentials of the products takes this to the next level, helping dwellings to better blend in with their surroundings in a more sustainable way, especially in conservation planning areas. Klober Roll-Fix® makes dry fixing simple The absence of a British Standard and lack of effective building control in the RMI sector has encouraged use of cheaper dry fix kits for ridge, hip and verge. These may not contain all of the essential components and use ridge rolls with a backing of insufficient quality to provide effective long-term waterproofing. The Klober Roll-Fix® kit not only supplies everything to fix 5 metres of ridge or hip (including hip trays and cro clips in the hip kit) but uses universal ridge seals for half round / angle ridges and third round / uniangle hips. The Roll-Fix Butylon backing also provides a lasting bond on almost any surface and provides immediate waterproofing. Roll-Fix can be used with any tile or slate, having been tested extensively to ensure it is universally compatible. As a result, merchants and roofers will find it is both practical to stock and easy to fit. ENQUIRY-Card 127

Drainage/External Works & Landscaping 43 gratings with a loading Class of C250. Made from PA-GF, the FIBRETEC® grating will not rust and has a slot configuration specifically designed by Hauraton R & D engineers to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating and important consideration for this project. The RECYFIX® channel component is made from 100% recycled polypropylene (PP) and has an intake cross section of 372 cm2. The FIBRETEC® grating are factory fitted on all channels. PRO accessories include a trash box, foul air trap, mud bucket, closed and DN 70/100 end caps. Ken Burgess, Hauraton‘s Project Manager comments; “As each one metre unit only weighed 3.4kg, the contractor, ATPS of Clacton on Sea, found the RECYFIX® PRO channels with their FIBRETEC® gratings easy to install in the concreted top level of the car park”.

UltraCrete reduces defects by 98% The UK’s largest water company is using UltraCrete’s flowable bedding system to reinstate manhole covers and frames across its network. United Utilities manages the water and waste network in North West England, this includes Cumbria, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles pass through its network on a daily basis and increasing traffic volumes are taking their toll on the road infrastructure as well as damaging the ductile ironwork within it. United Utilities sought a durable bedding system that would support the ironwork bearing the high traffic volumes. UltraCrete’s Envirobed HA104® compliant bedding and backfill mortar system provided the ideal solution. It is a two-part cementitious system which offers all of the benefits of resin-based products, but none of the hazards and no expensive waste disposal.

Sanilfo UK – a leading designer and manufacturer of pumps, macerators and cubicles – has recently supplied Norfolk-based manufacturer of rustic shepherd huts, The English Shepherd Hut Co, with a series of Saniflo products making it possible for the hut manufacturer to offer a unique accommodation experience in the beautiful English countryside. The portable units are suitable for weddings, festivals, campsites, offices, garden rooms and playrooms and are made from wood and corrugated iron offering every modern convenience. The real differentiator between Shepherd Huts and most other portable accommodation is that these special units offer running water for all cooking and bathing needs and even toilets that flush rather than the chemical variety offered by most temporary accommodation, providing a luxurious experience. Poachers Hut, for example, features all mod cons including bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens and seating space thanks to ingenious interior design that maximises every inch of available space. The company specified the Sanicompact with integrated macerator from Saniflo. The ideal WC for compact spaces where mains drainage is unavailable, the Sanicompact has an automatic push-button flush connected directly to a water supply and needs no cistern. It also features a wash basin inlet so grey waste water can also be processed through the macerator if required. Waste

is discharged via 32mm pipework either to a storage tank or to the nearest mains. The Aquarius – a posh, portable toilet block for weddings and events – provides upmarket showering and WC facilities and is available for hire or sale and features Saniflo’s Saniwall allowing for modern, wall hung sanitaryware to be specified. The Saniwall is a builtin frame system with an integrated dual flush cistern and macerator pump. With two extra side inlets it can take waste from wash basin and a shower as well as the WC. Craig Nield, owner of The English Shepherd Hut Co, says: “Saniflo products have enabled us to develop huts that do away with the need for chemical loos. Customers are happy to pay a bit extra for nice, clean-smelling bathroom facilities whether it is one of our accommodation huts or our bathroom blocks. They not only look nice, but are easy to use and offer home from home comfort. Our next range, The Neptune, will be launched in the very near future and is an upmarket loo block for events featuring Saniflo macerators. We’ve worked out the optimum size waste storage tank to ensure our products overcome the ever-present problem of over-flowing toilet facilities at festivals and events.” We’re grateful to our plumber, Sam Weston, for his expertise, which has enabled us to develop a great range of Shepherds Huts.” Ann Boardman, Customer Services and Marketing Manager of Saniflo UK, adds: “Seeing how The English Shepherd Hut Co is using Saniflo products with great acclaim is what Saniflo is all about. Don’t slip up on wet environments Wet environments such as shower rooms, bathrooms and toilets offer plenty of challenges when it comes to health and safety. David Cockhead, Altro’s Quality and Compliance Advisor, outlines key considerations to prevent slips in areas where people are often at their most vulnerable. Most buildings have wet environments that will be used by a wide variety of people. Staff who look after residents or patients in wet environments, as well as cleaners, can be at risk of slipping and the law says they need to be protected. Whilst the use of safety flooring in wet environments is now commonplace, many people are unaware that not all products are up to the demands of these challenging areas. The first step in ensuring you specify the right flooring, is to understand how manufacturers test and measure slip-resistance. Across the world safety flooring is tested in various ways. The standard Pendulum Test (BS 7976) is often used in the UK. The ‘pendulum’ is a dummy heel that is swung over a set area of flooring in a controlled manner to simulate slipping on a wet floor. The slipperiness of the flooring has a direct and measurable effect on the pendulum value. Flooring that achieves a wet result of Pendulum Test Value ≥36 has a low slip potential, and translates to a 1 in a million chance of slipping. The Ramp Test is also widely used. R9-R13 values are based on angle measurements of a motor oil-covered ramp that an operator walks on.

The angle at which the operator slips forms the R value. Because the most common contaminant on floors is water, using motor oil doesn’t give a true representation of what happens in real life situations. For the barefoot version of the test (DIN 51097), the ramp is covered in water. However, wet environments are not just about water; we need to consider what we use in those areas, including shampoo and shower gel. The slip risks these contaminants create are potentially dangerous and could cause serious accidents. We’ve carried out tests using real world contaminants, which show in stark detail the risks involved in making the wrong flooring choice. We tested our specialist safety flooring, developed for use in wet environments, for both shoe and bare foot use, and our standard, industry-leading general safety flooring. The table shows how these performed with different real world wet environment contaminants. The results show that safety flooring is not enough for wet environments; specialist products that are fit for purpose must be specified. Another factor to consider when reviewing

manufacturers’ slip resistance ratings is whether the slip resistance is sustained for the lifetime of the product. Some manufacturers send ex-factory materials to independent test houses to certify that their products are slip resistant. This means the results can be based on flooring that has a thin coating or emboss which was applied to increase the level of slip resistance for the test. Altro, and some other British safety flooring manufacturers, believe that these thin levels of slip resistance can wear off in just a few months. And this leaves a much less slip-resistant surface which could fall significantly below the HSE minimum recommended levels. Finally, consider ongoing cleaning and maintenance of the flooring. No one wants to wash, swim or change in a dirty environment, but what about the contamination that’s not obvious? If safety flooring isn’t cleaned properly, a hazardous level of dirt and contaminant build-up can accumulate on the surface, again potentially increasing the risk of a slip to as high as one in twenty. What’s more, a buildup of bacteria can lead to mould growth, the effects of which range from exacerbating allergies to respiratory problems. Older people and children, as well as those with existing health issues, can be particularly affected by this. Look for flooring with technology that makes it easier to clean, and choose flooring without studs as this is ensures there is nowhere for limescale to build up. Find out more at ENQUIRY-Card 574

Rinnai makes major investment in London & South East with appointment of Sales Team Rinnai, the UK’s leading manufacturing supplier of high efficiency continuous flow hot water heating and delivery units, has announced a major investment in London and the South East with the formation of a dedicated sales team covering the whole region.

Flomate iBoost THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION TO LOW WATER PRESSURE AND FLOW Stuart Turner’s successful range of flomate mains boost pumps has been further extended with the introduction of the new flomate iBoost

This major investment follows the opening of a London office also dedicated to serving the region. The new sales team will work in tandem with the Rinnai UK sales centre and technical support at the company’s Runcorn, Cheshire HQ. “The new premises have been set up in response to high demand for Rinnai product and expertise. Specifiers and installers in the London area now have a direct line to the Rinnai sales force which is ready to offer advice on the latest technologies and legislation and will be a vehicle to inform the industry of new developments, new technologies and new ways,” says Managing Director Tony Gittings. The team and their areas are, as follows: Scott Amass will look after North London and the associated Home Counties; Steve Richards will be heading sales in West London and

NTRODUCING THE NEW iBOOST Poor water pressure and limited flow rates can be a real problem for many households. In a larger property with multiple bathrooms and en-suites, these issues frequently result in poor performing showers at key times of day and can make showering a miserable event rather than the invigorating experience that it should be! flomate iBoost has been developed for larger domestic properties which have significant water pressure and flow demands. This new fully integrated package combines a 200 litre cold water break tank which overcomes restricted mains water flow and a high performance multi-stage pump to dramatically boost pressure. The flomate iBoost is capable of delivering water at pressures up to 4.5 bar and peak flow rates in excess of 100 litres per minute. In normal use, the system will deliver 60 litres per minute at 3 bar which is adequate for four showers each delivering a more than satisfactory 15 litres per minute. Designed for use in conjunction with the latest high-flow combination boilers and pressurised hot water cylinder systems, the iBoost features a high gloss white front panel and won’t look out of place if standing amongst other appliances in a kitchen, utility room or garage. Alternatively, being less than 540mm wide and not requiring the

associated Home Counties; Kim Wullf will be looking after South London and their Home Counties. All three have extensive experience and track records in the hot water delivery business. Rinnai’s comprehensive range of A rated energy efficient products for hot water solutions qualify for additional energy efficiency points, boosting building energy performance. The product range far exceeds energy efficiencies in current Building Regulations (Conservation of fuel and power) and legislation. For owners of existing commercial buildings, the use of Rinnai Infinity condensing and high efficiency water heaters qualifies for extra heating efficiency credits.

large ventilation clearance gaps associated with some systems, it can be concealed within a 600mm width cabinet. An integral 8 litre pressure accumulator reduces the number of times that the pump needs to start, maximising its working life and minimising household disturbance if a tap is turned on briefly at night time. Flomate iBoost makes the installers life easier too. A central aperture allows good access to the mains water and pressurised water outlet connections, enabling those connections to be made after having moved the unit into its final position. A modular quick-release pump assembly takes the strain out of maintenance and a conveniently located drain-cock simplifies periodic draining and flushing of the water tank. The iBoost complies with all current water regulations and is CE compliant. It is manufactured from WRAS approved materials and as with the rest of the Stuart Turner Flomate range, it’s supplied with an industry leading 3-year guarantee as standard and is fully supported by our PumpAssist technical team. RINNAI TRAINING COURSES FOR SEPTEMBER/NOVEMBER More dates have been added to Rinnai UK’s 2016 training programme to cater for the increasing number of engineers and specifiers turning on to the energy saving benefits of gas fired continuous flow water heaters. Rinnai has seen a massive increase in interest for its complete and comprehensive range of highly efficient ErP labelled A-rated continuous flow water heaters. The company supplies models from the smallest domestic unit to super-size industrial appliances, and

since the introduction of energy labelling, demand from engineers for training on the Rinnai Infinity range has rocketed. The demand has led Rinnai, which believes in making it easy for professionals to experience hands on training with its technologically advanced product, to schedule a new tranche of tailor-made, flexible courses that allow engineers the opportunity to explore at first hand the practical and energy saving benefits of continuous flow gas fired water heaters and to familiarise themselves with the technology. Rinnai training specialist Ian Jenkins says: “Since ErP, enquires for Rinnai Infinity units have increased exponentially as the transparency of energy labelling allows specifiers and end users to compare products and make an informed choice. As a result of this surge in interest, so far this year we have trained 66% more engineers. These have included our bespoke courses

designed to fit in with the modern time demands for professionals. We have also seen a large increase in CPD modules all over the UK” “The most popular course modules are ‘Understanding ACOP L8 and hot water system design’ and ‘System design incorporating continuous flow and renewables’,” says Jenkins. The hands-on training events are aimed primarily at engineers and facilities managers, and cover both traditional and new technologies for commercial water heating and highlight the considerable energy and monetary savings that can be achieved by installation of a continuous flow hot water system. Courses can be arranged to suit individual requirements either at Rinnai’s Runcorn, Cheshire HQ in the dedicated training facility or if preferred, Rinnai will take the module to the customer’s workplace or other venue convenient to delegates. Since August and up to October Jenkins has organised a course every week for

Gas engineers as well as catering for the needs of other customers and consultants in the private and public sectors. The additional course dates announced by Rinnai for engineer training are: 27 September and 27 October, 24 November: ‘Service and fault diagnostics (Water heaters)’. These courses are open to engineers, are free, and available at Rinnai’s Runcorn HQ. The comprehensive engineer training course line-up for 2016 includes nine modules: Rinnai product overview; Continuous flow and the future of water heating; Intermediate water heater; Continuous flow - Excellence in design; Service and fault diagnostics (Water heaters); Service and fault diagnostics (Energy saver warm air units); Understanding ACOP L8 and hot water system design; Maximising renewable gain in hot water design; and, Continuous flow as an innovative method of satisfying energy and regulatory demands. CPD Roadshow courses are also available, designed by Jenkins for M&E consultants and specifiers, design and build engineers, facilities managers and gas contractors. These courses have already attracted praise from CIBSE. For example, it says of the CONTINUOUS FLOW WATER HEATING SYSTEM SIZING AND DESIGN course: “The course delivers what it outlines and is well constructed.” ENQUIRY-Card 581

Dunlop Shower Waterproofing Kit – The easy way to protect your shower, bathroom or wetroom Ensuring a wetroom, bathroom or shower is fully waterproof is crucial part of any installation, because tiles and grout on their own will not inherently protect against water damage. Dunlop, which manufactures tiling and decorating products for the trade, offers a Shower Waterproofing Kit, specially designed to include everything required to allow tradesmen to waterproof a shower area, wet room or walk in shower area in a quick, easy and simple way. Designed for any internal intermittent area where continued exposure to water may cause damage, the kit fully waterproofs the background behind the tiles to prevent water penetration up to 1.5metres high in a two-walled shower unit or 1metre high in a threewalled shower unit. As a result the kit prevents water saturating the whole area, reducing the risk of unsightly black mould forming, and drastically reducing the risk of more serious issues such as floor collapse and other surfaces vulnerable to corrosion. Dunlop’s Shower Waterproofing kit provides an ideal waterproofing system for showers, wetrooms, kitchens and utility rooms to prevent damaging leaks and leave tradesmen and their customers with the ultimate peace of mind. As with all of Dunlop’s tiling products, the kit is also supported by a 10-year guarantee, so confident are Dunlop that the kit will prepare and protect against water penetration for years to come. To get ultimate waterproof protection, simply apply the primer to dry walls and floors, and leave until touch dry, seal corners, cracks, joints and floor junction with the Waterproof Coating before applying the tape to ensuring no voids are left behind. Finish by applying the coating to at least 1metre in height all over the shower walls, coating any taped areas, and, if used, over the floor matting area. This fully protects the background making the area ready to receive tiles within in just 24 hours. Debi Boulton, Sales and Marketing Manager for Dunlop Adhesives, said:

“Over the last few years the popularity of wet rooms and showers has increased dramatically, which in turn has increased the risk of installation failures due to lack of waterproofing protection. As a result we developed our Shower Waterproofing Kit which meets the demands of our customers for a quick, easy to use waterproofing kit. “With superior performance and features, our Shower Waterproofing Kit continues to prove extremely popular with the trade.”
