Kenneth is named Dunlop Multi-Skill Champion 2016 Fourteen-year-old multi-skill student Kenneth Sylvester from Doncaster College has been named as the overall winner of Dunlop’s Multi-Skill Champion Competition 2016. The competition was launched by the pioneering manufacturer of tile adhesives, grouts and decorating products as a way to celebrate and recognise the best multi-skill tiling and decorating students in the country. Eighteen students aged from 14 to 40 from FE colleges across UK providing the City & Guilds Construction Skills qualification (6219) competed against each other in a series of tiling and decorating tests at the competition’s Grand Final which was held at Dunlop’s Innovation and Technology Centre in Stoke-on-Trent on Thursday (16th June). Following the rigorous assessment, Kenneth was declared the winner and presented with the winner’s trophy and approximately £1000 worth of tiling and decorating tools, products and equipment, kindly donated by sponsors Bellota and Coleman Brothers. After being named the winner an emotional Kenneth said: “I’m absolutely speechless, I don’t think this will sink in for a long time. I just can’t put it into words what means for me, it’s the best thing I ever done. “Doing the multi-skill course at the college and taking part in this competition has been amazing. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, and I just got the hang of it so quickly. It’s definitely something I want to do when I finish college.

“I just want to say a big thank you to Mark Adams, my tutor, because without him I would never have won this competition.” Gareth Birks, National Technical Support Manager at Dunlop said: “This is the first time we’ve run this competition and the interest has been amazing. We’ve been teaching in colleges for many years and thought this would be a great opportunity to

require and can advise you in making the right decision.” Wykamol has invested £850k in 2016, extending its Burnley HQ to house a new powder processing and bagging plant. “We're always looking for ways to improve our offering to customers and increase the efficiency of our operations”, Andrew continues. “The new plant is our latest forward-thinking venture – others including our state-ofthe-art, in-house product development lab. We're now able to prepare bespoke powder formulations to customer's exact specifications, such as cement waterproofing powders, thermal renders, specialist structural grouts and more.” The catalogue's eye-catching design takes a light-hearted look at the restoration and waterproofing trade: “Above all, a catalogue is a functional document, but there's no reason practicality can't be entertaining!”, Andrew adds. “We've covered our design with bootprints, mortar splashes and coffee cup stains, for a look that many contractors will instantly feel at home with!” To find out more about Wykamol, visit and, to order your free copy of the new Wykamol catalogue, email or call 0845 400 6666. recognise student’s skills while familiarising them with our range of Dunlop tiling adhesives and decorating fillers and smoothers. “Congratulations to Kenneth who despite his relatively young age was a deserved winner, showing great skill and application, and to all the other competitors for taking part.” Debi Boulton, Dunlop Sales and Marketing Manager, added: “The Dunlop Multi-Skill Champion competition was a great chance for construction skills students across the country to test their skills against their peers and win tools and product to give them a good start in the construction industry. “Multi-skill students are often overlooked and under supported compared with other trades, but with the help and support of suppliers like Dunlop we can ensure they are given the tools and training to succeed in their chosen careers.” Grand Final competitors were judged by Dunlop Training Manager and national SkillBuild judge Dave Rowley and Wayne de Wet, the award-winning professional decorator, consultant and industry expert. Dave said: “The quality of work the students produced was to a really high standard. Choosing a winner was an incredibly difficult task, so congratulations to Kenneth for coming out on-top and to all the other competitors for a truly great day.”

Type LTT end view in reveal

Level Threshold Protection? ‘Protection’ from the Latin

verb protegere means 'covered in front' which is exactly what the Level Threshold Cavitray from Cavity Trays of Yeovil provides in one simple placement. The threshold is a critical area where numerous protective DPC elements come together. Protecting cavity wall thresholds against damp transference can be more challenging when a level access is required or where the sill rise is minimal: Level Threshold Trays (Type LTT) are three-dimensional pre-shaped protective DPC’s that literally envelop the masonry. Each acts as an extended DPC hat that covers the top and the sides of each skin. So doing permits the flooring

arrangement to interface structurally without the danger of damp transference because the skin is effectively enveloped. Importantly each end of the Type LTT wraps around the three faces of each reveal skin, projecting into the cavity. Thus the horizontal DPC in each skin can terminate within a protective wrap, despite being at a higher level, ensuring integration continuity. The reveal closer is able to overlay each wrap and continue downwardly, terminating below sill level. By enveloping and

isolating the structural masonry, the Type LTT permits abutting flooring, abutting insulation and DPC’s / membranes to continue over an inside skin and converge with an exterior skin that itself is isolated from dampness at the point of convergence. It’s a bit like putting on a pair of waterproof gloves – you keep dry and direct contact with the wet is avoided. The inner skin Type LTT is hidden following completion of adjacent finishes whilst the external Type LTT may be

s Cavicloser notched to fit LTT trimmed back following frame/sill installation so its presence is not apparent. Type LTT Level Threshold Trays by Cavity Trays of Yeovil are extensively used by contractors seeking a consistent, protective, standardized threshold construction arrangement.

Marmox Multiboard Peterborough Pool Swimming pools present a notoriously aggressive environment for building materials including reinforced concrete, so it is a measure of Marmox Multiboard’s inherent durability and other attributes that it has been specified for an unusually challenging refurbishment contract at a leisure centre in Peterborough.

The Regional Fitness & Swimming Centre is just a short walk from Peterborough Cathedral in the city centre and is popular with families as well as clubs and schools, attracted by the facilities and modern styling. Unfortunately, however, the warm moist conditions had caused areas of the paintwork around insides of the very large skylights to peel. High above the water and with asbestos present in the original lining panels, this meant a maintenance nightmare. Main contractor Amey was successful in tendering for the wider project, but brought in Commercial Rope Access with its team of abseillers to tackle relining the nine rooflights: each of which measures 8.5 x 4.5 metres and is

five metres deep. Working at night, the four man team, with a fifth assisting on the ground, erected an ‘umbrella’ structure beneath each rooflight in turn to prevent any tools or debris falling into the water. Then following the specification for the upgrade, half-size sheets of Marmox Multiboard, measuring 1250 x 600 mm, were able to be fixed directly over the top of the existing asbestos based substrate, the Multiboards also offer a greatly improved thermal performance which will help prevent problems of condensation forming. The boards had been treated with one coat of EP150 on the reverse side and received a further two coats on the visible face. Despite the working time restrictions,

the difficulties of accessing the upstand areas and the care required in dealing with asbestos in such a public space, the refurbishment of the rooflights was successfully completed with three months. Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. They are both light to handle and easy to cut, while still being able to sustain substantial loadings if required. ENQUIRY-Card 501

Tarmac cement creates the perfect mix

Tarmac, the UK’s leading sustainable solutions provider and one of the foremost producers of cement, has launched a 12.5kg Mastercrete Mixer Pack- the most convenient and sustainable bag on the market. The new Mixer Pack has been dubbed ‘the perfect mix’. It contains the exact amount of cement needed for one standard 4:1 mix, meaning that bags will no longer be wastefully split. Traditionally, to make a 4:1 mix, a standard bag of cement would be cut in half using a builder’s shovel. The result? Dust, mess and cement that went to waste due to it being exposed to the elements, all costing builders’ time and money. The new Mastercrete Mixer Pack means that builders can now save money by buying the exact size they need. The bag also has a handle and can be comfortably carried in one hand which reduces the risk of accidents and strains in the workplace. ENQUIRY-Card 105

becoming more active in having their products specified by architects, presenting commercial and architectural glazing contractors with new opportunities.

Insight carries out continuous research across the industry and has recorded 30 fabricators adding an additional aluminium system to their range in the last 3 months alone.

Jade added; “the aluminium market has enjoyed significant growth in recent times, particularly in the residential market fuelled by bi-folding doors and increased demand for large-span patio doors, but it seems aluminium systems companies are now stepping up their activity across the window, door and façade market in general.”

Jade Greenhow, operations manager at Insight Data commented; “Aluminium systems companies are clearly becoming more active and keen to develop their fabricator base. We’ve seen 3 new aluminium fabricators set up in the last 3 months, but it’s the number of companies taking on additional systems that is truly remarkable.”

Insight Data provides regular analysis of the construction and building products market and has the UK’s most comprehensive database of construction firms, architects, small builders, and window, door and conservatory suppliers, with over 60,000 contacts and 50,000 verified email addresses.

The increase spans the residential, light commercial and architectural glazing markets. Fabricators are offering trade and residential customers a wider choice of products and specifications, while systems companies are

New animation shows the secret of Rehau Polytec REHAU has posted a new animation on its dedicated YouTube channel to show specifiers that, while its Polytec composite curtain walling system might look just like aluminium systems from the outside, its real secret lies underneath. The animation literally lifts the aluminium exterior off the curtain walling to reveal the steel sections which are at the core of the system and the PVC-U which is on the inside. It explains the structural benefits which come from using steel, which is up to three times stronger than aluminium sections with the same geometry, and the fact that the PVC-U interior is low maintenance, warm to the touch and available in any RAL colour. Malcolm Taylor, REHAU’s Product Manager, explained: “REHAU Polytec is a triple strength glazed curtain walling system which is unlike any other on the market. ENQUIRY-Card 126

Referendum result means that fleets should look out for bargains The vote has been counted, the UK will be leaving the EU and this has a range of implications for anyone managing vehicles. With the poll being split 52/48 and representing a clear mandate for the government, long-term changes are inevitable. Steve Clarke, Fuel Card Services group marketing manager, said: “At any time of economic difficulty, there are suppliers who cave in to short-term pressures, which means good deals for their customers. This is as true in the fleet market as

anywhere else. In reality, Britain will remain within the EU for at least the next two years, but probably rather longer. David Cameron is unwilling to trigger Lisbon’s Article 50 during his remaining months in office. Even if his successor acts

immediately, the 27 other EU members are all opposed to our departure and each one has the power to delay the exit process for years.” “Although 94% of UK firms do not trade with the EU, everyone’s projected whole-life

ROI Calculator proves value of software A nifty return on investment (ROI) calculator has been launched providing builders with a handy tool so they can see for themselves the effectiveness of buying the country’s leading estimating software package. Taking seconds to fill in, it highlights the value of the time builders spend putting together their estimates. Once all the sections have been completed, it quickly becomes apparent that by using software to assist with the estimates and cutting down the time spent putting them together will soon save builders thousands of pounds.

vehicle costs will rise in the very short term,” he said. “Sterling’s fall effectively raises UK prices for fuel which will be reflected at the pumps in the coming days and weeks. It also hits anything else sourced from overseas and there may have to be temporary duty and tax rises. In the mid- to long term, history shows that markets always stabilise. The key difference between the current exchange rate crisis and any previous difficulty is that this one was anticipated.” His view is supported by Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, who said: “We are well prepared for this. The Treasury and the Bank of England have engaged in extensive contingency planning. The Bank will not hesitate to take additional measures ... supported by a resilient UK financial system, one that the Bank of England has consistently strengthened over the last seven years. The capital requirements of our largest banks are now ten times higher than before the crisis. The Bank of England has stress tested them against scenarios more severe than the country currently faces.” Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor

Manufacturers and Traders, said: “Government must now maintain economic stability and secure a deal with the EU which safeguards UK automotive interests. This includes securing tariff-free access to European and other global markets, ensuring we can recruit talent from the EU and the rest of the world and making the UK the most competitive place in Europe for automotive investment.” Steve Clarke said: “Although only 6% of British firms trade with the EU, the immediate impact and enduring consequences will affect everyone. Fleets can expect interesting times ahead and it is hard to see how fleet managers should prepare. Right now, it could be worth watching for signs of panicselling by nervous suppliers facing short-term stakeholder pressures. Those with funds available for investment may be able to find some real bargains.” Fuel Card Services advice to fleets following the referendum can be found at

Developed by Adrian Wild, boss at HBXL, all builders have to do is fill in the required fields and press go. Based on what value the builder places on their estimating time, the number of estimates they produce per week and the average time they take, the calculator instantly shows the weekly and annual cost the builder spends on estimating. So for example if a builder produces five estimates per week, typically taking two hours per estimate and values their time at £35 per hour the ROI calculator shows the annual cost of estimating to be £18,200. However, with research showing that users of EstimatorXpress typically cut the time spent estimating by 50 per cent the annual cost of estimating (including cost of software) would drop to £9,551 giving a saving of £8,649. It means anyone investing in the EstimatorXpress Total Toolkit package would get a ROI of 1,920 per cent, saving £25,947 over the lifetime of the software and spending 260 hours less on estimating per year. Adrian said: “This simple calculator is a great way to see what the value is of the time

spent estimating. When that is extended across the lifetime of the software the figures start to become quite eye watering! “Canny builders looking to cut down on the time they spend putting together their quotes are turning to products like EstimatorXpress to not only speed the whole process up but to become more profitable and accurate while improving their win ratio. “Those who can’t see the value of this sort of product will continue to spend hour upon hour into the evening and on weekends working out their costs. I should know, because that is precisely what I used to do before I created EstimatorXpress. “Those who embrace this sort of technology will soon be reaping the rewards, spending less time on estimates, winning more work and becoming much more profitable.”

400 demanding professionals rate Bahco’s new saws ‘a cut above’ Following tough workplace testing by 400 independent trade professionals, coupled with huge investment in the latest manufacturing technology, Bahco’s great new range of handsaws has now been introduced in the UK. With their classic yet contemporary Swedish design, Bahco’s Superior, ProfCut and PrizeCut saws set new standards in cutting performance, longlasting blade sharpness and in their ability to cut many different materials in comfort and safety. Manufactured in Sweden by Bahco engineers, they are available in a wide range of types, toothing and tooth pitch, with optional versions for coarse,

medium, fine, precision and special cutting. Blade lengths range from a 12” tenon, 14” veneer and 20” precision saw to 22” and 24” lengths for coarse and medium cutting. An angled nose enables better access in tight places. Depending on the type selected the new handsaws will cut all kinds of timber, wet or dry, including tantalised wood, hard wood, plywood and thin profiles, as well as laminates, plastics, concrete, decor materials and soft metals. Developed through Bahco’s award winning scientific Ergo™ process, the Superior’s low friction blade has the very latest NXT hardpoint toothing. This technology builds on the success of the brand’s XT toothing to achieve

smoother, straighter cuts and a higher, flatter finish with less risk of deviation from the original line and no loss of speed. The textured, shock proof grip of the ergonomic handle, made from three high-tech materials, gives the saw a warm, comfortable feel and its 100g extra balance weight and 1.03 blade thickness provides a smoother action and maximum power transfer. The ProfCut and PrizeCut saws have anti-slip handles inspired by the ergonomic principles of the Superior handle, offering comfortable, secure grip in all workplaces and weathers. “Our latest handsaws set the highest possible, world class standards in cutting technology,” says Mark Haywood, who

heads the Bahco team in the UK. “The forthright feedback we received from more than 400 construction trade professionals, as well as from ergonomists and independent experts in tool design and manufacturing, enabled excellence to be achieved. “Everyone at Bahco is incredibly proud of this new handsaw range. We know from our 130 years of toolmaking experience that professionals will be delighted by their feel, comfort and performance.” For full details of the new handsaw range visit ENQUIRY-Card 519

JSP awarded Gold from Supply Chain Sustainability School

JSP Ltd has been given a Gold Award from the Supply Chain Sustainability School. Sustainability is of massive importance to the construction industry, yet the major contractors can’t achieve it all by themselves. It is through the supply chain that they deliver their projects – and the sustainable solutions they promote to their customers. The Supply Chain Sustainability School is a virtual learning environment that aims to help construction suppliers and subcontractors develop their sustainability knowledge and competence. The concept of the School was initially developed by Skanska and was launched in partnership with Willmott Dixon, Kier, Sir Robert McAlpine, Lend Lease, Morgan Sindall and Aggregate Industries. Since then, other construction companies such as BAM Construct UK, Balfour Beatty, Carillion, Wates and ISG have also joined. JSP has managed to achieve this Gold Award through significant investment. Solar PV installation in 2014 generates enough solar power to ensure on average one in three JSP Safety Helmets are made by the sun. On a really sunny day, 100% of its Safety Helmets are

Network VEKA & FCD to the rescue taking the 'pane' out of troublesome conservatory issue

Bury St Edmunds-based Network VEKA member Frames Conservatories Direct (FCD) has stepped in to help a new customer solve an old problem. Local resident, Mrs White was on the verge of despair after a nearby contractor installed her a conservatory that, it soon became evident, was far from fit for purpose. Adrian Lewis, MD at FCD explains: “A conservatory with a 'lean-to' roof had been constructed, with a projection that was far too long to support the considerable amount of glass involved. The panes were incorrectly fitted, and were shattering as they expanded and contracted with the weather, showering poor Mrs White and the interior of the conservatory with broken glass.”

Aware of the firm's outstanding reputation, Mrs White contacted FCD to help resolve the situation. “We were keen to start work on fixing the conservatory”, Adrian continues, “and also wanted to help the customer gain some compensation – both for the shocking standard of the installation, and the distressing and dangerous situation it had left her in. “Network VEKA was founded in reaction to the kind of unscrupulous trader Mrs White had dealt with. It protects consumer's interests with a series of guarantees, safeguarding their investment, even if their chosen member company should unexpectedly cease to trade. In this case, the original installation was completely unrelated to Network VEKA, but we empathized with the customer and wanted to help her

regain some of the money she had invested with the previous company.“Through our Network VEKA membership we have access to the services of Technical Consultant Don Waterworth who is trained as a Private Practice Building Surveyor and Building Engineer. He was able to work on Mrs White's behalf to gain compensation from the original contractor and, in this case, his fee was covered through our membership, obviating any cost to the customer. “We were pleased to fit a completely new roof, suited to the size of the conservatory, to ensure that Mrs White was able to enjoy the light and welcoming space she desired in the first place. “At FCD, we are completely committed to quality and service – the main reason we joined Network VEKA. It instantly

shows customers that ours are the highest standards. Besides replacing Mrs White's roof, we helped 'right a wrong' and got our customer refunded for the original installation.” Mrs White was delighted with the service she received and sent a letter of thanks to Don Waterworth: “I can not find the right words to express my gratitude and appreciation. 'Thank you' seems inadequate, but I was in despair until Adrian Lewis gave me your name and contact details, only then did I begin to have a glimmer of hope. The men from Frames Conservatories Direct were so nice and a pleasure to have in my home”. ENQUIRY-Card 536

SMART DOOR FROM NORDAN at the forefront of technology NorDan, one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of high quality Scandinavian timber windows and doors, has unveiled its SMART door technology to the UK market. NorDan is at the leading edge of technology in the development and manufacture of timber windows and composite doors. Founded in 1926, the company celebrates 90 years in business this year and is financially stable. SMART Door, is a completely new product. Developed from NorDan’s top of the range composite door range, with first class thermal properties, stability second to none, and security to keep you feeling safe at nights. The robust security layers of rust proof steel sheets also contribute to the stability of the door, ensuring it doesn’t warp or bend in hot weather or in a damp British winter. These external doorsets protect against driving ran and winter winds, and we have test certificates to prove it! NEW for 2016, is the additional of a high tech locking system which enables you to open the

door from a distance using mobile telephony. This door of the future has no key, but has every other security aspect you would expect. The new SMART technology in the door will also help you turn on and off the burglar alarm system. A camera with a wide angle lens and high resolution can record who was at the door, log any entry calls that you have allowed, and let you talk to whoever is at the door, whether you are home, or away. All through your mobile phone! ENQUIRY-Card 539

ALUMINIUM BI-FOLD AND SLIDING DOORS DIRECT TO SELF-BUILDERS Time is money for self-builders. The longer a project takes, the higher the cost. AluFoldDirect, a specialist in aluminium bi-folding and sliding doors, is minimising delays by delivering fully glazed products to site within two weeks.

Aluminium bi-folds and sliders are perfect for creating that dream home but installation is complicated by the fact that, until there’s a hole, accurate measurements cannot be taken. This gives self-builders two options: build the hole, measure it and wait for delivery; or guess the measurements and cross their fingers for the best. “Nearly isn’t good enough when self-

builders are faced with a door that doesn’t fit exactly; that’s what leads to even longer delays. The AluFoldDirect way is to give self-builders a fast, effective, ‘right first time’ installation by guaranteeing a fast turnaround of only two weeks for a glazed aluminium bifolding or sliding door,” comments Craig Miller, Managing Director of AluFoldDirect.

“Our approach has enjoyed great success with trade customers and we believe that the self-build market needs to be approached in the same way. People looking to remodel or build their own home are investing time, effort as well as money, so need fast high-quality products in a short space of time.” The self-build market is set to grow rapidly, with the Government focussed

on doubling the number of homes built in this way by 2020 to help solve the UK housing crisis. Since 1 April, councils up and down the country must keep a register of potential self-builders as part of the Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015.

The VEKA UK Group unveils the NEW M70 system The Matrix 70 Window System from VEKA has led the industry for decades, with its classic good looks and impressive technical performance. Now, thanks to ongoing investment in the supplier's PVC-U systems, a new, even more energy-efficient M70 system has been launched with five chambers within the profile, along with its predecessor's tried and tested steel reinforcements. MD Dave Jones said: “The VEKA UK Group constantly strives to update and improve our product range to ensure it is constantly evolving. We know that to maintain our position as the industry leader, our products have to be the best they can be. In our 30th year of UK manufacturing, we're proud to have designed and launched the next generation of M70. “The NEW 2016 M70 is a fullyintegrated, multi-chambered, bevelled 70mm system with steel reinforcement sections. Additional chambers have

increased the thermal performance to meet the demanding current and future requirements for more energyefficient products, while an updated contemporary bevel will complement any style of home or commercial property. “The demand for bevelled systems within the commercial and social housing markets remains as strong as ever, with this style of profile accounting for the majority of installations in these sectors. The clean bevelled lines of the new M70 will also appeal to homeowners looking for contemporary aesthetics to enhance their home. “During the design process of the new M70, we also took the opportunity to completely redesign our bay pole system based on feedback from customers. The new system is

Layher brings ‘World’s first solution to major refurbishment project The world’s first use of the new universal aluminium HD beam from Layher is bringing key benefits to a major refurbishment project in Reading. Constructed entirely from light weight aluminium, the design features integral Allround rosettes as bracing points which utilise customers’ existing stocks to lace and brace pairs of beams together. It can work with a variety of other adaption parts to allow integration of the beams into the scaffold itself to make full use of the beam’s and scaffold’s capacities which represents important gains compared with fixing to the outside of the scaffold that can weaken strength capacities. “The project on the L-shaped building, which is under the management of Osborne, features a total of 16 boarded lifts rising to an overall height of 30 metres,” says Sean Pike, Managing Director of Layher Ltd. “The car park within, which serves one of Reading’s main shopping centres, is accessed via an entry and exit tunnel at one of end of the main 50metre façade – neither of which could be closed off at any point, not least during the build-up to the Christmas shopping period. Our new universal aluminium HD beam design has been positioned across the two adjacent openings to provide the optimum solution, with no road closures or even overnight work required.” The significance of the latter point is underscored by the refurbishment site being

linked directly to one of the town’s most prestigious hotels. The beam was built at ground level on an adjacent plaza and then craned in two sections into position from above. A scaffold tower at each end and a third support structure at the centre point allowed the two wide access tunnels – large enough for shop delivery vehicles – to be maintained underneath. Leg load capacities of 116 kNs then enabled the full scaffold structure above to be supported by the 1.25 metre deep beam which itself has a total span of 26 metres. The design features 48.3 mm o/d vertical posts and diagonals. The uprights include integral rosettes and also allow traditional tube and couplers to be used as an alternative means of lacing and bracing. “However, one of the key characteristics of the new beam design is its 60 mm o/d top chord,” says Mel Archer, Managing Director of Archway Services. “It is this that provides the strength and which also enables the scaffold above to be connected at a wide choice of fixing positions.” 962-548

New Delvemade coating helps prevent static build up on metal roofs Engineers from a leading water company reported that they occasionally felt an electric shock when undertaking routine maintenance work on sewerage tanks. This highlighted a significant potential risk as the contents of the tanks are vented to release flammable gases. The company quickly investigated and discovered the cause. A build up of static was occuring when operators wearing rubber boots walked across theroofs of the metal tanks, as they had been painted with a non-conductive coating. The organisation approached Delvemade, to find out if they had a coating that could effectively protect the tank and help dissipate the static build up. Delvemade had no such product in its range, so turned to its sister company Itac to resolve the problem. The result is a new product called Delcote ASC, which has been shown in tests to help prevent the build-up of static.

IKOslate offers green – and vandal proof - solution for Gorse Hill School When a single sourced solution was required to replace the flat and pitched roofs at Gorse Hill Primary School in Stretford, Trafford Council turned to global waterproofing and roofing leader IKO plc. The old roof had suffered damage, some from vandalism and some from normal wear and tear. IKO’s Ultraprevent built-up bituminous system was specified for all flat roof areas, while IKO Polimar, a cold applied liquid, was used to deal with intricate details. Most importantly, all 16 dormers were redesigned using IKOslate, robust and durable polymer tiles with a natural looking finish. “The old roof was easily accessible to pupils retrieving lost footballs - or just larking about - and the tiles had become cracked and broken,” explains Paul Thompson, Divisional Sales Manager of IKO plc.

Polypipe rises to Taylor Wimpey challenge at New Bedfordshire development Taylor Wimpey’s latest large-scale residential development has benefited from a large diameter stormwater attenuation tank from Polypipe.

Boasting a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes in the idyllic Bedfordshire countryside, the 180-property Regent’s Place development in Houghton Regis utilised Polypipe’s Ridgistorm-XL large diameter piping system for a

surface water attenuation system. The system met the requirements of the site and has been to be adopted under Section 104 Agreement by Anglian Water. Taking into account the needs of the site and local ground

conditions, Polypipe worked closely with Taylor Wimpey and Consulting Engineer JPP Consulting to design an attenuation tank utilising more than 500m of Polypipe’s 2100mm Ridgistorm-XL large diameter piping system. The attenuation tank can store more than 2,052m3 of stormwater in order to cater for to both ‘1 in 30’ year and ‘1 in 100 plus 30% climate change’ year storm events. As well as needing to cope with such storm demands, the tank was also required to sit beneath a public open space with limited footprint and a sloping gradient. The design challenge was enthusiastically taken up by the Polypipe team, who

produced a tank with staggered legs to take into account conditions at the site. Over 500m of Ridgistorm-XL was supplied, totalling to 14 Ridgistorm-XL pipe runs in 2100mm diameters. The pipe was engineered to ring stiffness SN2 by Polypipe’s technical engineers to meet ground conditions, burial depths, native soil pressures and loading on site. The system passes the required deformation and buckling checks in accordance with BS EN 1295-1. As well as the tank’s pipe runs, the Ridgistorm-XL system incorporated a total of 34 prefabricated modularised fittings. This included impressive 90° bends and ‘F’, ‘T’ and double ‘T’

fittings to keep jointing to a minimum in order to save time on site and cost. The socket and spigot nature of the systems pipes and fittings allowed for easier pipe alignment and for a quicker installation utilising the electro-fusion welding jointing method. Along with x10 RIDGISTORMAccess Manholes in diameters 1200mm and 1800mm installed for ongoing maintenance work, the attenuation tank at Regent’s Park boasts an offset 3m diameter RIDGISTORMCheck Vortex Flow Control Chamber. This controls the discharge of water from the attenuation tank at a rate of 10l/s so as not to overwhelm the local watercourse. The chamber also features a penstock flow controller to provide additional flow control when required. Keith Millard, Senior Engineer at Taylor Wimpey said: “Polypipe designed the required stormwater attenuation system to not only fit the available area, but it also saved us time and costs on the installation by delivering the system and fittings as one piece modular.

Train your sights on excellence with Kestons Vocational Courses

Why we are warming to the idea of heat pumps - By Steve Rooney, Sales

Product training from leading British Manufacturer Keston Boilers provides Installers and Heating Engineers with the necessary tools to ensure that all aspects of commissioning and servicing can be attended to quickly and efficiently. As an Installer or Heating Engineer, it is important to have the confidence and knowledge to be able to install and service a wide range of products and Keston’s specially designed product training courses are tailor made for the heating professional. From three centres of excellence in Leeds, Hull and Reading, Keston offers a one day training course on all of its domestic and commercial boilers. Providing a mix of hands-on and theory based classroom learning, each Keston training course has been designed specifically with the heating engineer in mind and courses include discussion with tutors, demonstrations with practical advice and lunch and refreshments are provided.

Director with Gaia Climate Solutions A decade ago, most people wouldn’t have had a clue what a heat pump was or what it could be used for. However, today, with fuel prices soaring and the Government subsidising renewable energy schemes, things have changed. Now it’s not only building services engineers who wax lyrical about heat pumps but also designers, developers and even homeowners. With the Renewable Heat Incentive, building occupiers can see massive benefits in being subsidised to produce low-cost ‘green’ heat. For the nontechnical enthusiast, heat pumps seem almost too good to be true. You take the background temperature of the air or the ground and ‘amplify’ it with your heat pump to warm your house. The best analogy for the layman is a fridge, which sucks the heat energy out of the food stored within and radiates it to the environment via the black metal grille at the back.

Selling Top Quality Stoves in the UK for over 20 years

In an era of consumerism surprisingly very little is offered for brand loyalty even for products purchased day in day out. Pegler Yorkshire however, leading plumbing and heating products manufacturer, recognizes the need to support small, independent installers and has launched its own PY Installer Club that simply rewards each and every purchase from its entire range of brands. “Pegler Yorkshire has a long history of developing products and solutions to address the needs of the plumbing industry and its professionals, this is just another way in which we are continuing to support our loyal customer,” said Phill Jackson, Marketing and Business Development Director for Pegler Yorkshire. The Pegler Yorkshire Installer Club has been entirely developed with today’s busy installer in mind.

RINNAI ON DEMAND HOT WATER HEATING UNITS ON LPG is low nox, sustainable and perfect for off-grid HOT SITES Rinnai’s range of condensing hot water heater units using LPG are more economic to run than other sources such as oil or electric counterparts and they deliver lower carbon emission figures, greater energy efficiencies - this makes them the first choice for off-grid installations. For installers, helping an off-grid user select an energy efficient water heater is critical — and a condensing continuous flow water heater using LPG is one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly options available. By choosing a continuous flow water heater, an end user can reduce energy costs by up to 50% and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 61% (compared to electric equivalents). When compared with oil-fired systems this saving is even greater. Tests show that a Rinnai Infinity condensing water heater has 107% efficiency and is low NOX compared with an oil boiler that emits approximately 364 mg/kwh NOX. That means a Rinnai condensing water

heater emits approximately 10% of the NOX that an oil boiler emits, a 90% reduction. Therefore, combining a gas boiler and a Rinnai water heater will radically reduce NOX. The EU is recommending that the maximum NOX level be reduced to just 56mg/kWh by 2018. Rinnai water heaters are already compliant with this proposed standard. This forms part of the new rules under the Eco-design of Energy-using Products Directive (ErP). If we now compare the production of CO between gas and electricity we find that for every GJ (277.78kW) of energy used gas will produce 44.44kg compared to 103kg with electric. We can see that for the same energy used electricity will produce twice the amount of one of the major greenhouse gases. Then if we look at the emission per kW from thermal generation of electricity we find that electricity will produce 0.5kg of CO compared to 0.16kg for the same kW

generated with LPG, NOX production works out at 258kg per KW as compared to only 0.184kg. The efficiency of this type of electrical generation is as low as 40%. So if we now compare the use of electricity to LPG to heat hot water we find that electricity is 40% efficient in comparison to a Rinnai water heater which returns 107% efficiency.

Electricity is not the ‘green’ fuel that its marketing portrays it to be. It has potential to produce more CO and NOX and can be very costly. A Rinnai LPG continuous flow water heater is an ‘on-demand’ system. When a hot-water tap is opened, the unit reads the demand and starts the heating process. The water flows through a heat exchanger, where it heats to the desired

temperature using only as much gas as is needed. When the tap is turned off, the heater automatically shuts off. For more details on RINNAI products visit

Rinnai Phex Solo Success showcase of continuous flow water heating for domestic & commercial installations Rinnai scored a big success at PHEX 2016 with its Solo recirculator water heating range, an industry-leading A class commercial and domestic hot water heating unit suited to all domestic and commercial sites and installations. The Rinnai Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX water heater is the first of its kind to combine the advanced technology of wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder, all in one compact footprint. “Rinnai innovation and advanced technology is now a known alternative to traditional technologies. The show established that the Rinnai brand is now synonymous with the values of quality and cost effectiveness, it was incredibly satisfying to speak to so many installers and users who have become brand fans” says Rinnai’s Chris Goggin. The design parameters of the Solo empowers specifiers,

designers, installers and engineers to benefit from unique Rinnai technology in applications where it was not previously possible. For example, the Infinity Solo with both 35kW and 54kW sized

appliances, ensures sites with a smaller gas meter can readily use this technology. The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances that exist in today’s market.

Ideal Commercial Boilers Rolls with the times

Up Dated Improvements for Paragon P4 Gas Fire

As part of a £4 million community and business hub renovation project, Ideal Commercial Boilers have supplied an Evomax Cascade, consisting of three Evomax 150s and a multiline flue cascade, to Marble Hall, the former RollsRoyce engine factory on Nightingale Road, Derby. Originally built in 1907 and rich in history, the former factory and office facility has been fully refitted to provide a brand new managed workspace and community hub, and new boilers, radiators and radiant panels installed. The new Evomax boilers were supplied by leading British manufacturer Ideal Commercial Boilers and specified by Paul Lucas and Adam Whitehead of Palms Facilities who installed a carbon pipe heating system with Ideal Commercial boilers and header kits and flue headers. Paul explained that the Evomax 150 boilers were chosen specifically for their compact size and high kW output for a wall mounted boiler which made installation easy.

Following on from the successful launch of the Paragon P4 a number of years ago Charlton and Jenrick have introduced a new highly realistic log set which further enhances the appearance of the fire. The fire is available in either Natural Gas or LPG fuels and offers an 82% efficiency meaning it is not only pleasing on the eye but also the pocket! The versatile fire can be fitted into a fireplace, frameless in the wall or in the wall with a trim or slip around it. Controlling the fire is made easy using the infra red remote handset provided. In addition to the new log fuel bed which comes as standard with the P4 there is now an option on firebox liners: the existing black ceramic or the new beige vermiculite liners. With these two options the look and feel of the fire can be altered to suite preference and room decoration. ENQUIRY-Card 140 ENQUIRY-Card 141

The cylinder is stainless steel and this reduces the weight compared to glass lined models, and makes transportation and installation a lot easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), so the user pays less to maintain the heat within the tank. One other benefit of the Infinity Solo using a stainless steel cylinder is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glasslined equivalent as glass suffers from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time. The Infinity Solo range is also renewables compatible and supplied pre-fitted with a coil, meaning that the primary energy source will always be from renewable gains and the complementary Rinnai water heater will only apply the precise amount of gas to boost the difference in temperature. Rinnai manufactures the energy efficient Infinity range of gas fired continuous flow water

Vasco launches new FlatLine designs Four years after launching the FlatLine, Vasco is now taking a step further in this success story with the introduction of the Vasco FlatLine Collection. Besides the well-known FlatLine (horizontal), this collection now includes the new vertical Flat-V-Line and the new FlatPlinth-Line which is designed to fit horizontally beneath windows or other objects where space is limited. The FlatLine radiators have impressive heat release because the flat front plate is in direct contact with the water channels in the radiator so the heat is released immediately, giving an excellent return. The vertical Flat-V-Line provides enormous levels of heat release up to 3251 watt. These designs are extremely versatile with numerous connection possibilities, a solid white finish in S600 structural varnish and the option of chrome towel rails for bathrooms and kitchens. The Infinity brand carries the widest range of condensing water heaters on the market today with the most impressive efficiencies in operation, leading the field in technological innovation. The company’s technically advanced condensing hot water heating units are precision engineered to provide simple, effective solutions for all types of commercial applications from caravan parks, restaurants and laundries to factories and office buildings as well as social and domestic housing projects. The units are renewable-ready (suitable for use as a temperature booster for solar thermal and heat-pump).

Inta takes the pressure out of choosing valves Inta, manufacturer of heating, plumbing and showering products, has launched a new extensive range of WRAS-approved pressure reducing valves (PRVs). The collection, which features a wide variety of sizes, has been specifically designed for both domestic and commercial applications. With static and dynamic pressure control, the range is designed to reduce fluid pressures and maintain the desired level, preventing damage to system components located downstream of the PRV. Due to the compact design of the valves, which range between 15mm and 54mm, they can be used in areas where space is limited and can be installed either vertically or horizontally. They also come complete with an optional ‘dial up’ pressure gauge to help adjust pressure between 0.5 bar and 6 bar to match the requirements of the system. ENQUIRY-Card 143

HOISTING COMPLIANCE WITH LIFETIME HOMES With the continuing emphasis on giving people the ability to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, housebuilders are being offered a new resource to create lifetime homes- friendly bathrooms. Under updated design criteria for lifetime homes, bathrooms should be designed to be accessible, and provision should be made for the structure to be able to accommodate any future provision of a ceiling hoist, particularly between bedroom m and bathroom. To help architects, social housing providers and builders get it right from the outset, Clos-o-Mat- Britain’s leader in the provision of disabled and elderly toilet solutions in and out of the homehas produced a new white paperDesign Guidance & Considerations for a Domestic Accessible Toilet/Wetroom. The white paper covers everything from adequate space to manoeuvre a wheelchair through the role of colour

and texture to the structural considerations to accommodate personal care assistive technology. “Our population is ageing and growing heavier. We already have over 1/4million people who cannot move around their home, so the role of ceiling hoists in domestic environments is only going to grow,” says Clos-o-Mat moving & handling expert Kelvin Grimes. “Yet a little thought at the design stage makes it much easier to adapt the home as the occupant’s needs change, even something as simple as peninsular location of the toilet, and makes the whole process as easy as possible. And, if required, we can supply, install, commission and

service/maintain the equipment too, so customers have the reassurance of one, experienced point of contact for the whole process.” Clos-o-Mat’s ceiling track (X/Y) hoists can carry up to 200kg (31stone) and can, at the push of a button, be moved to wherever needed within the room or on the same storey, precisely positioning the person where the carer requires- from one room to another, and over a bed, chair, toilet, shower seat or changing bench. The hoists are designed to support the user as needed, and be simple for the carer to operate. The hoists compliment the company’s range of accessible bathroom technology, including the brand-leading

Revive wooden furniture with Osmo Wood has long been a popular material for furniture due to its durability, versatility and striking natural appearance. However, whether it’s 10 or 100 years old, every day wear and tear can take its toll on wood, deteriorating the furniture’s quality and look. Unknown to many, one of the most effective and common methods of restoring wooden furniture is simply reviving the surface. Worn wood can be sanded, cleaned and re-finished to present a fresh canvas with an as-new appearance. For furniture pieces that have a build-up of wax, unsightly finger prints or white rings, an abrasion technique may be required. Many good furniture finishes are designed to be thick to prevent any impermeable damage from penetrating the wood. For example, white rings are a common wooden stain that has soiled the wax, polish or finish, rather than the wood itself. ENQUIRY-Card 148 ENQUIRY-Card 149

Quietly broadcasting at BBC Worldwide

The BBC TV Centre at Wood Lane London is world renowned for its television output over many years. Completed in February last year, much of the interior was extensively redesigned by HOK architects, with refurbishment and construction carried out by the BDL Group, one of the largest specialist dry-lining contractors in the UK. One of the key factors was to ensure that noise was kept to a minimum and reverberation time reduced to ensure a pleasant and calm environment over very large areas. The solution was high performance Troldtekt acoustic panels which were used to line all the ceilings and the soffit around the circular atrium. The panels were fitted to wood battens fixed to the concrete ceiling as ceiling panels. Prior to fixing, the fine structure panels were factory painted by Troldtekt in a light grey finish.
