Kenneth is named Dunlop Multi-Skill Champion 2016 Fourteen-year-old multi-skill student Kenneth Sylvester from Doncaster College has been named as the overall winner of Dunlop’s Multi-Skill Champion Competition 2016. The competition was launched by the pioneering manufacturer of tile adhesives, grouts and decorating products as a way to celebrate and recognise the best multi-skill tiling and decorating students in the country. Eighteen students aged from 14 to 40 from FE colleges across UK providing the City & Guilds Construction Skills qualification (6219) competed against each other in a series of tiling and decorating tests at the competition’s Grand Final which was held at Dunlop’s Innovation and Technology Centre in Stoke-on-Trent on Thursday (16th June). Following the rigorous assessment, Kenneth was declared the winner and presented with the winner’s trophy and approximately £1000 worth of tiling and decorating tools, products and equipment, kindly donated by sponsors Bellota and Coleman Brothers. After being named the winner an emotional Kenneth said: “I’m absolutely speechless, I don’t think this will sink in for a long time. I just can’t put it into words what means for me, it’s the best thing I ever done. “Doing the multi-skill course at the college and taking part in this competition has been amazing. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, and I just got the hang of it so quickly. It’s definitely something I want to do when I finish college.
“I just want to say a big thank you to Mark Adams, my tutor, because without him I would never have won this competition.” Gareth Birks, National Technical Support Manager at Dunlop said: “This is the first time we’ve run this competition and the interest has been amazing. We’ve been teaching in colleges for many years and thought this would be a great opportunity to
require and can advise you in making the right decision.” Wykamol has invested £850k in 2016, extending its Burnley HQ to house a new powder processing and bagging plant. “We're always looking for ways to improve our offering to customers and increase the efficiency of our operations”, Andrew continues. “The new plant is our latest forward-thinking venture – others including our state-ofthe-art, in-house product development lab. We're now able to prepare bespoke powder formulations to customer's exact specifications, such as cement waterproofing powders, thermal renders, specialist structural grouts and more.” The catalogue's eye-catching design takes a light-hearted look at the restoration and waterproofing trade: “Above all, a catalogue is a functional document, but there's no reason practicality can't be entertaining!”, Andrew adds. “We've covered our design with bootprints, mortar splashes and coffee cup stains, for a look that many contractors will instantly feel at home with!” To find out more about Wykamol, visit www.wykamol.com and, to order your free copy of the new Wykamol catalogue, email email@example.com or call 0845 400 6666. www.mclink.co.uk/962-582 ENQUIRY-Card 582
recognise student’s skills while familiarising them with our range of Dunlop tiling adhesives and decorating fillers and smoothers. “Congratulations to Kenneth who despite his relatively young age was a deserved winner, showing great skill and application, and to all the other competitors for taking part.” Debi Boulton, Dunlop Sales and Marketing Manager, added: “The Dunlop Multi-Skill Champion competition was a great chance for construction skills students across the country to test their skills against their peers and win tools and product to give them a good start in the construction industry. “Multi-skill students are often overlooked and under supported compared with other trades, but with the help and support of suppliers like Dunlop we can ensure they are given the tools and training to succeed in their chosen careers.” Grand Final competitors were judged by Dunlop Training Manager and national SkillBuild judge Dave Rowley and Wayne de Wet, the award-winning professional decorator, consultant and industry expert. Dave said: “The quality of work the students produced was to a really high standard. Choosing a winner was an incredibly difficult task, so congratulations to Kenneth for coming out on-top and to all the other competitors for a truly great day.”

Type LTT end view in reveal
Level Threshold Protection? ‘Protection’ from the Latin
verb protegere means 'covered in front' which is exactly what the Level Threshold Cavitray from Cavity Trays of Yeovil provides in one simple placement. The threshold is a critical area where numerous protective DPC elements come together. Protecting cavity wall thresholds against damp transference can be more challenging when a level access is required or where the sill rise is minimal: Level Threshold Trays (Type LTT) are three-dimensional pre-shaped protective DPC’s that literally envelop the masonry. Each acts as an extended DPC hat that covers the top and the sides of each skin. So doing permits the flooring
arrangement to interface structurally without the danger of damp transference because the skin is effectively enveloped. Importantly each end of the Type LTT wraps around the three faces of each reveal skin, projecting into the cavity. Thus the horizontal DPC in each skin can terminate within a protective wrap, despite being at a higher level, ensuring integration continuity. The reveal closer is able to overlay each wrap and continue downwardly, terminating below sill level. By enveloping and
isolating the structural masonry, the Type LTT permits abutting flooring, abutting insulation and DPC’s / membranes to continue over an inside skin and converge with an exterior skin that itself is isolated from dampness at the point of convergence. It’s a bit like putting on a pair of waterproof gloves – you keep dry and direct contact with the wet is avoided. The inner skin Type LTT is hidden following completion of adjacent finishes whilst the external Type LTT may be
s Cavicloser notched to fit LTT trimmed back following frame/sill installation so its presence is not apparent. Type LTT Level Threshold Trays by Cavity Trays of Yeovil are extensively used by contractors seeking a consistent, protective, standardized threshold construction arrangement.

Marmox Multiboard Peterborough Pool Swimming pools present a notoriously aggressive environment for building materials including reinforced concrete, so it is a measure of Marmox Multiboard’s inherent durability and other attributes that it has been specified for an unusually challenging refurbishment contract at a leisure centre in Peterborough.
The Regional Fitness & Swimming Centre is just a short walk from Peterborough Cathedral in the city centre and is popular with families as well as clubs and schools, attracted by the facilities and modern styling. Unfortunately, however, the warm moist conditions had caused areas of the paintwork around insides of the very large skylights to peel. High above the water and with asbestos present in the original lining panels, this meant a maintenance nightmare. Main contractor Amey was successful in tendering for the wider project, but brought in Commercial Rope Access with its team of abseillers to tackle relining the nine rooflights: each of which measures 8.5 x 4.5 metres and is
five metres deep. Working at night, the four man team, with a fifth assisting on the ground, erected an ‘umbrella’ structure beneath each rooflight in turn to prevent any tools or debris falling into the water. Then following the specification for the upgrade, half-size sheets of Marmox Multiboard, measuring 1250 x 600 mm, were able to be fixed directly over the top of the existing asbestos based substrate, the Multiboards also offer a greatly improved thermal performance which will help prevent problems of condensation forming. The boards had been treated with one coat of EP150 on the reverse side and received a further two coats on the visible face. Despite the working time restrictions,
the difficulties of accessing the upstand areas and the care required in dealing with asbestos in such a public space, the refurbishment of the rooflights was successfully completed with three months. Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. They are both light to handle and easy to cut, while still being able to sustain substantial loadings if required. firstname.lastname@example.org www.marmox.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/962-501 ENQUIRY-Card 501

Tarmac cement creates the perfect mix
Tarmac, the UK’s leading sustainable solutions provider and one of the foremost producers of cement, has launched a 12.5kg Mastercrete Mixer Pack- the most convenient and sustainable bag on the market. The new Mixer Pack has been dubbed ‘the perfect mix’. It contains the exact amount of cement needed for one standard 4:1 mix, meaning that bags will no longer be wastefully split. Traditionally, to make a 4:1 mix, a standard bag of cement would be cut in half using a builder’s shovel. The result? Dust, mess and cement that went to waste due to it being exposed to the elements, all costing builders’ time and money. The new Mastercrete Mixer Pack means that builders can now save money by buying the exact size they need. The bag also has a handle and can be comfortably carried in one hand which reduces the risk of accidents and strains in the workplace. www.mclink.co.uk/962-105 ENQUIRY-Card 105

Fabricators widening their aluminium product range, says Insight Data Aluminium window, door and commercial glazing fabricators are increasing their product range to capitalise on new opportunities, says industry experts Insight Data.
becoming more active in having their products specified by architects, presenting commercial and architectural glazing contractors with new opportunities.
Insight carries out continuous research across the industry and has recorded 30 fabricators adding an additional aluminium system to their range in the last 3 months alone.
Jade added; “the aluminium market has enjoyed significant growth in recent times, particularly in the residential market fuelled by bi-folding doors and increased demand for large-span patio doors, but it seems aluminium systems companies are now stepping up their activity across the window, door and façade market in general.”
Jade Greenhow, operations manager at Insight Data commented; “Aluminium systems companies are clearly becoming more active and keen to develop their fabricator base. We’ve seen 3 new aluminium fabricators set up in the last 3 months, but it’s the number of companies taking on additional systems that is truly remarkable.”

Thanks to ongoing investment, the new, even more energy-efficient M70 system has been launched. The system was among the numerous high quality VEKA products showcased at this year's FIT Show and BSI's Lorraine Balch was on hand to present the Kitemark certificate to Dave Jones, MD of The VEKA UK Group.
Guardian, a leading manufacturer of high performance architectural glass, has introduced Guardian Sun® in the UK and Ireland, a specially coated glass with solar control and thermal insulation (U-value of 1.0 W/m²K) properties, and an internal light reflection rate of 17%, one of the lowest currently available for this type of application. Guardian Sun glass is designed to provide year-round comfort for conservatory walls. With a high level of thermal insulation and a neutral colour, energy-efficient Guardian Sun glass helps to retain the room’s warmth during cold periods whilst its advanced solar control properties block 57% of the sun’s heat, minimising overheating the room during hot periods. This outstanding performance delivers an improved energy balance and makes Guardian Sun ideally suited for wall glazing and window applications in conservatories and orangeries.

New animation shows the secret of Rehau Polytec REHAU has posted a new animation on its dedicated YouTube channel to show specifiers that, while its Polytec composite curtain walling system might look just like aluminium systems from the outside, its real secret lies underneath. The animation literally lifts the aluminium exterior off the curtain walling to reveal the steel sections which are at the core of the system and the PVC-U which is on the inside. It explains the structural benefits which come from using steel, which is up to three times stronger than aluminium sections with the same geometry, and the fact that the PVC-U interior is low maintenance, warm to the touch and available in any RAL colour. Malcolm Taylor, REHAU’s Product Manager, explained: “REHAU Polytec is a triple strength glazed curtain walling system which is unlike any other on the market. www.mclink.co.uk/962-126 ENQUIRY-Card 126

Referendum result means that fleets should look out for bargains The vote has been counted, the UK will be leaving the EU and this has a range of implications for anyone managing vehicles. With the poll being split 52/48 and representing a clear mandate for the government, long-term changes are inevitable. Steve Clarke, Fuel Card Services group marketing manager, said: “At any time of economic difficulty, there are suppliers who cave in to short-term pressures, which means good deals for their customers. This is as true in the fleet market as
anywhere else. In reality, Britain will remain within the EU for at least the next two years, but probably rather longer. David Cameron is unwilling to trigger Lisbon’s Article 50 during his remaining months in office. Even if his successor acts
immediately, the 27 other EU members are all opposed to our departure and each one has the power to delay the exit process for years.” “Although 94% of UK firms do not trade with the EU, everyone’s projected whole-life
ROI Calculator proves value of software A nifty return on investment (ROI) calculator has been launched providing builders with a handy tool so they can see for themselves the effectiveness of buying the country’s leading estimating software package. Taking seconds to fill in, it highlights the value of the time builders spend putting together their estimates. Once all the sections have been completed, it quickly becomes apparent that by using software to assist with the estimates and cutting down the time spent putting them together will soon save builders thousands of pounds.

vehicle costs will rise in the very short term,” he said. “Sterling’s fall effectively raises UK prices for fuel which will be reflected at the pumps in the coming days and weeks. It also hits anything else sourced from overseas and there may have to be temporary duty and tax rises. In the mid- to long term, history shows that markets always stabilise. The key difference between the current exchange rate crisis and any previous difficulty is that this one was anticipated.” His view is supported by Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, who said: “We are well prepared for this. The Treasury and the Bank of England have engaged in extensive contingency planning. The Bank will not hesitate to take additional measures ... supported by a resilient UK financial system, one that the Bank of England has consistently strengthened over the last seven years. The capital requirements of our largest banks are now ten times higher than before the crisis. The Bank of England has stress tested them against scenarios more severe than the country currently faces.” Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders, said: “Government must now maintain economic stability and secure a deal with the EU which safeguards UK automotive interests. This includes securing tariff-free access to European and other global markets, ensuring we can recruit talent from the EU and the rest of the world and making the UK the most competitive place in Europe for automotive investment.” Steve Clarke said: “Although only 6% of British firms trade with the EU, the immediate impact and enduring consequences will affect everyone. Fleets can expect interesting times ahead and it is hard to see how fleet managers should prepare. Right now, it could be worth watching for signs of panicselling by nervous suppliers facing short-term stakeholder pressures. Those with funds available for investment may be able to find some real bargains.” Fuel Card Services advice to fleets following the referendum can be found at http://ow.ly/F8mO301FIzN.
Developed by Adrian Wild, boss at HBXL, all builders have to do is fill in the required fields and press go. Based on what value the builder places on their estimating time, the number of estimates they produce per week and the average time they take, the calculator instantly shows the weekly and annual cost the builder spends on estimating. So for example if a builder produces five estimates per week, typically taking two hours per estimate and values their time at £35 per hour the ROI calculator shows the annual cost of estimating to be £18,200. However, with research showing that users of EstimatorXpress typically cut the time spent estimating by 50 per cent the annual cost of estimating (including cost of software) would drop to £9,551 giving a saving of £8,649. It means anyone investing in the EstimatorXpress Total Toolkit package would get a ROI of 1,920 per cent, saving £25,947 over the lifetime of the software and spending 260 hours less on estimating per year. Adrian said: “This simple calculator is a great way to see what the value is of the time
spent estimating. When that is extended across the lifetime of the software the figures start to become quite eye watering! “Canny builders looking to cut down on the time they spend putting together their quotes are turning to products like EstimatorXpress to not only speed the whole process up but to become more profitable and accurate while improving their win ratio. “Those who can’t see the value of this sort of product will continue to spend hour upon hour into the evening and on weekends working out their costs. I should know, because that is precisely what I used to do before I created EstimatorXpress. “Those who embrace this sort of technology will soon be reaping the rewards, spending less time on estimates, winning more work and becoming much more profitable.”
