Industrial Roofing time to test your metal If you’re more familiar with pitched and flat roofing, you might think that industrial roofing is not for you. This type of roofing is sometimes seen as a minefield and work that requires specialist skills; as a result, you may be reluctant to take on such projects. Sound familiar? It’s recognised that people in the trade often think that some industrial roof and wall cladding projects can be daunting and may involve multiple materials from numerous suppliers. However, there are many smaller and more manageable projects that are easy to tackle and are rewarding in terms of both added skills and business opportunities. Projects such as overcladding existing roofs, upgrading roof lights, or overhauling the gutter system are perfect for adding to your portfolio of work. With the help of a distribution expert that specialises in industrial roofing and wall cladding, this work can take on a whole new meaning; making any project more easily to manage regardless of size. Quite simply, an expert will do all the leg work for you; providing a cohesive supply chain that provides peace of mind for all involved. For instance, a specialist is more likely to be able to provide you with tip-top advice and training, as well as sound technical support. Whether it’s support on products and accessories, colour and profile matching, or flashing details for all types of industrial roofing - from sheeting, insulation and roof lights, to fixings and fasteners - your solution is just one phone call away. To make your life even easier when considering these projects, you can take advantage of the fact that a specialist has already invested time and energy

into sourcing the best and most suitable products for industrial projects, and can often deliver these at speed through local branch networks. Also, they guarantee continuity of supply. Balance this against having to source the products yourself and it’s a no brainer. If you think that your requirements are too small to call on the services of a specialist, then fear not. They spend a lot of their time working with contractors and builders on small to medium sized contracts and will be there to hold your hand every step of the way. So, if you’re looking to test your metal with industrial roofing, or to add another string to your bow, invest in the services of one-stop-shop expert, and bring peace of mind and added value to your project and to your customer.

Fire & Water resistance see Magply picked to play vital role for Bath Rugby The Recreation Ground in Bath is one of the crucibles of English rugby, famous long before the professional era and still a venue other Premiership and European sides frequently find presents a challenge they cannot meet.

It is also a location that posed specific physical and technical questions for the materials used in building the new West Stand, which Magply met in full. The new Gem Stand sponsored by brewery Bath Ales, backs onto the River Avon which is prone to periodic flooding, while the project architects, Arena 1865 also had to take several other design criteria into consideration. These included the provision of fire protection to help safeguard the 4,500 spectators the steel framed structure can accommodate, while rigidity, all round durability and ease of installation were all important. Project Architect, Simon PughJones outlined the long term ambitions for the ground as a resource to serve the people of Bath rather than just the rugby club, as well as the way Magply aligned with the demands of the most recent building project. He commented: “The Recreation Ground is the spiritual home of Bath Rugby, but the game has grown and the facilities no longer match all the needs. Our long term objective is to redevelop the ground and a year ago we embarked on a planning process to give certainty over the next four years while the bigger plan is considered and this involved building a new ‘temporary’ West Stand. This sits on the massive old base of the stand rebuilt after World War Two, with spreader plates to carry the steel frame. Unfortunately, however, the Rec is prone to flooding rapidly to a depth of a metre or more and therefore the building has to be resilient. Also safety requirements have been increased over the years and the new West Stand gives us better facilities including more toilets, more bars and better access

and egress in an emergency. We looked at a full range of board solutions including high performance gypsum and recycled plastic, but when we got into the science and the costings, it soon became clear the only board which ticked all the boxes was Magply. If there is a flood we will be able to quickly wash it down and repaint it, while it will continue to offer full fire resistance. We didn’t need specialist installers and although some of those unfamiliar were sceptical to begin with, they soon found it easy to work with in achieving a neat fit, which also included some fire-boarding applications. Simon summed up saying: “We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved with this project and the product gave us exactly what we wanted. As a club Bath is all about elite performance, constantly pushing forward and Magply fits with that ethos. In total some 2000 square metres of the Magply 1200 x 2400 x 9 mm boards were consumed in fitting out the main passageway beneath the Gem Stand where supporters can access various concession stands as well as the other facilities. Available from distributors nationwide, Magply continues to grow in popularity with consultants and contractors as well as manufacturers of fire doors, bathroom pods, custodial buildings, park homes and other modular buildings. Ultimately, it offers a long maintenance free life and peace of mind for the building specifier in respect of the ever present danger of fire to life and property. ENQUIRY-Card 500

Triton’s TWS-Fastcoat delivers fast track elastomeric waterproofing Triton’s elastomeric, liquid applied TWS-Fastcoat, has provided a rapid drying waterproofing solution for the floor slabs of the subterranean light wells at the Material Store housing development in Hayes. The material Store development is part of the £250 million regeneration of The Old Vinyl Factory in Hayes, West

London, where thousands of people worked for EMI, pressing and packaging vinyl records and making everything from radio sets to bicycles. The slabs were constructed approximately 1.5m below ground level and although the new concrete incorporated a watertight concrete admixture would have remained gas and vapour permeable. Two coats of Triton’s TWS- Fastcoat, (which can be applied effectively in ambient temperatures even when substrate temperatures are as low as 0o), therefore provided an impervious barrier which will also lower the potential risks of corrosion of the steelwork in the slabs as well as protecting the outer D surfaces. TWS-Fastcoat is a single pack, moisture curing, elastomeric resin. The membrane

cures in a continuous and elastic form, as a totally adhered layer. It guarantees total water tightness and withstands minor building movements and vibrations. TWS-Fastcoat can be used as a base coat, a reinforcing layer or a top-coat. Other typical applications include podium decks, low pitch and flat roof areas with pedestrian traffic, wet rooms, lightly trafficked flooring, water channels and ponds. In green roof applications, the addition of Triton’s geotextile fleece between the two coats of TWS-Fastcoat provides an effective root barrier and waterproofing layer. At the Material Store development, as part of the preparation for the application of TWS-Fastcoat, Triton’s Fillet Seal was applied in 25mm beads to all internal angles that eliminates 90o angles at wall/floor transitions and minimises the risk of leaving gaps or holes unsealed. It was also important to ensure that the concrete surface was clean and dust free. On porous or friable surfaces, Triton’s TWS-PU Primer should be applied before the application of TWS-Fastcoat. The slabs will receive raised access floors over the TWS-Fastcoat layer, allowing any potential water/rain ingress to enter the drainage systems of the individual dwellings beneath the raised floor. Listers 40 years in the making Let’s face it, the fenestration industry is hard work. Window companies are scrabbling over a very congested market place and unfortunately many have fallen by the wayside as the competition gets tougher and tougher. So to have 40 successful years under your belt is a remarkable achievement and that’s exactly what Lister Trade Frames of Stoke on Trent have achieved this year. Established in 1976 and operating from a shed at the bottom of the then owner’s

garden, nobody could have foreseen the impact that Listers would have in the market place. Mark Warren, Managing Director takes up the story. “I joined Listers fabricating PVCu windows in 1987 bringing the workforce to just 3 people. PVCu was a relatively new product and we truly made hay whilst the sun shone, rapidly outgrowing and expanding our premises and eventually moving our factory into the centre of Stoke on Trent.” Over the following 10 years Listers focus on quality products and effective marketing saw sales blossom from an annual turnover of just £200k to over £3Million and

employing over 50 staff. “We’ve had lots of competition over the years but our focus on building long lasting Trade Partnerships has always worked in our favour,” remarked Mark, “often being the first in the UK to deliver new products and standards of service our innovation and strategy has always kept us ahead, strong and successful.” Listers have been recognised for their innovations many times over the years winning numerous top industry awards. Fast forward to 2012 and the Listers Director team completed a buyout which allowed them the flexibility to push forward once again. And the results were almost

Prevent thermal bridging

instantaneous with Listers recording record sales in 2013 and 2014. Listers put their success down to constant evaluation of the market, their customer’s needs and their product lines. “We couldn’t afford to stay as a “white window” fabricator otherwise we would have been swallowed up by the demand for more innovative products,” said Mark, “and we pride ourselves on offering the widest customer choice using some of the very best products on the market.” 2016 sees Listers reaching the milestone of 40 years trading. With over 120 employees, new showrooms, a purpose built factory, a fully serviced trade

counter, an £11m turnover and of course, a vision of expansion for the next 40 years. And what better way to celebrate 40 years of trading? A huge staff party! In typical Listers style, they converted their entire carpark into a funfair with all the games, concessions, rides and entertainment you could think of, along with full bar and catering. “It’s an achievement for Listers to have hit 40 years trading and the thanks has to go to our staff for all of their support over the decades,” said Mark. “We honestly couldn’t have achieved what we have without their help and this 40th anniversary bash is just a little thank you from all of the Directors to our team.” It has been an impressive journey and what is immediately apparent is that Listers consider the last 40 years as only the start of what will become an even more remarkable history. 01782 391900 Page 1ENQUIRY-Card 508

HUNDREDS OF EVENTS MARK THE UK’S FIRST EVER CONSTRUCTION UNITED WEEK This October, those with an interest in the UK’s construction sector may have been more interested in taking tea, kicking footballs and presenting in schools than designing and building the structures of tomorrow. That’s because the 17th-23rd October saw more than 130 events take place across the UK, with all areas of the construction sector joining together as part of Construction United in order to raise money for good causes. Created in order to provide a unified voice for the sector, and to tackle some of the biggest issues it faces, Construction United marked its first year by asking its partners and the

public to host a fundraising event during one week of activity. The initiative’s partners, including main contractor Morgan Sindall and leading product distributor SIG, joined forces to encourage participants to host fundraising events across the UK. The response to the call was overwhelming, with partners and the public hosting 134 events across the week. The NEC in Birmingham proved a hive of activity, with a number of Construction United partners taking part in UK Construction Week festivities. As well as inspiring talks from the likes of Time to Change, one of Construction United’s partners, the event saw a

unique 5-a-side football tournament taking place featuring a number of teams from across construction. The sports didn’t stop there, with a number of challenges undertaken across the UK. While football proved the most popular sport, a number of cycling and rowing races also took place, as well as a fencing tournament. Perhaps the most popular event across the week was the ‘Big Brew Break’, a tea break that encouraged team members to engage in conversation, with the aim of building team bonds and tackling mental health issues in the workplace, an issue that transcends the construction ENQUIRY-Card 512

We’re overwhelmed by the support that we’ve received, and it’s great to know that these funds will support so many great charities.” “We chatted with the Regiment about their work and the opportunities available in construction after service, which is a move I’ve made myself having been employed by the Royal Australian Air Force. The sector is a great place for ex-forces personnel to build a career and several of my colleagues have done the same.” Mark Tomlin, UK Group Sales and Marketing Director at SIG, added: “As headline sponsor of Construction United we fully support the coalitions’ objectives of improving perceptions of the construction industry, addressing the skills gap and building on its reputation as a caring sector.” ENQUIRY-Card 513

Look closer at truly personal service Taking a closer look at the meaning of personal service could surprise some fleet managers. The degree of indirect influence that service levels can have on a fleet’s bottom line is not obvious. Worse, if a low standard of service seems to be the industry norm, a fleet manager can easily believe that good service does not exist. The fuel card sector offers a classic example of how good service can make a real difference to fleet management efficiency. The reason for using fuel cards in the first place is to cut costs and save time. This is why you look for the ease of refuelling given by a pump locator app, the significant time savings offered by eliminating paperwork and administration and the efficiency boost of having 24/7 access to customised management reports.

Is your fleet cyber-secure?

As we all move further into cyberspace, entrusting more of our personal and corporate information to magnetic strips and electronically stored or transmitted data, the threats to our security become harder to see yet potentially far costlier. Worryingly, as James Lister, Head of IT at Fuel Card Services observes, “few people take the time to find out if the payment system they’re using is sufficiently secure.” This is particularly concerning now with the two busiest online days of the year: Black Friday on the 25th of November and Cyber Monday on the 28th, followed by the run-up to Christmas. Around this time last year, ThreatMetrix showed a 25% increase in fraud just before the holiday season, tracking 45 million fraud attempts in just 90 days. In fact, so serious are the virtual threats now to UK businesses that The Guardian reported government plans to spend £1.9 billion on cybersecurity. ENQUIRY-Card 104

Rehau’s AGILA fire door now available nationwide

The new CEMEX ReadyBrick Facing range

REHAU has announced that its AGILA fire door which attracted so much interest at the FIT show is now officially available from a network of fabricators. Barnsley based Euroglaze and Shepley in Manchester have all been fully trained in the manufacture of the doors and have successfully completed their fabrication trials, while Hart & Co in Skelmersdale will be completing training early in 2017. As a result, REHAU’s specialist commercial sales team are already working with specifiers to win project specifications for the AGILA fire door and installers now have a choice of manufacturers to supply them. Since the FIT show, the AGILA fire door has been fully tested and accredited at Exova BM Trada to a 30 minute fire rating in a full range of configurations including top and sidelight combinations.

A new range of bricks, the CEMEX Readybrick Facing range is ‘hot of the press’ at the company’s state-of-the-art factory in West Calder, Scotland. The facing bricks offer builders and house developers an alternative solution to clay bricks, with a shorter production lead time and quick turnaround to keep up with the growing demand from new housing developments. The range consists of six standard colours – Lanark Brindle, Lauder Marigold, Leith Iron, Lothian Gold, Perthshire Red and Tannochside Buff aptly named with a Scottish influence, reflecting their manufacture in Scotland using locally sourced materials. The bricks have been carefully engineered with perforations to allow for better and easier placement by the builder, saving valuable time.

Air Tight Timber Frames Introducing the latest innovation from leading construction connector manufacturer Simpson Strong-Tie; the timber frame panel closer, or TFPC. This useful connector provides the quickest and most accurate way of drawing together timber frame panels and

The innovative technology embodied in tesa’s ACXplus range of double-sided acrylic core tapes for constructive bonding and permanent mounting proved a draw for visitors to this year’s FAST show at the Williams Conference Centre in Oxfordshire when the company’s International Product Manager, Daniel Reichenbacher, visiting from the company’s European HQ in Hamburg, delivered a presentation on the subject. tesa ACXplus has employed viscoelastic properties in a new category of double-sided tapes which ensure a powerful bond on materials with different thermal coefficients of expansion and contraction by optimally dissipating the stresses. eliminating gaps – and that’s important, because those gaps contribute to air leakage and insulation issues. The TFPC features an angled plate which guides a structural screw (included) into the adjacent timber frame panels at precisely the angle necessary to pull them together to form an air tight bond, with the added benefit that it won’t damage the substrate. The special design of the screw cinches the panels together and gives 3kN of shear capacity – keeping them that way. Simpson Strong-Tie Timber Frame expert Fraser Pilkington explains: “It seems such a simple solution, but we put a great deal of thought into making it easy to use, with no room for error.

Densostrip for Concrete Beach Huts Raymond Brown Construction Ltd has started to install 119 new concrete beach huts at Milford on Sea. Infrastructure works include a concrete promenade slab, access ramps and steps, and pedestrian walk-way surfacing. These replace the masonry beach huts that were destroyed in a Valentine's Day storm in 2014. The new beach huts are being constructed from pre-cast reinforced concrete units to form four individual terraces totaling 250m length. Each terraced section of huts is formed from a culvert placed on its side with an open front. The sealant in each culvert section will play an essential role in ensuring longevity. Winn & Coales widely used Densostrip sealant was recommended to Raymond Brown Construction by Merchant Suppliers, Resapol of Southampton. Apart from its track record, the immediate availability of Densostrip in 20mm x 25mm sections was also an advantage to the contractor. ENQUIRY-Card 110 ENQUIRY-Card 111

Attention carpenters, shop-fitters & joiners there is a product now on the market that can make your life easier. Whether its scribing skirting boards, dado rails or any other mouldings, there are no excuses for leaving any gaps. It’s now the responsibility of the trade, such as painters and decorators, to cover up poor workmanship. Tibby Singh has many years of experience in scribing by hand and he sometimes wished he could go faster, expecially when he has hundreds of metres of skirting to fit. Upon unboxing Trend’s Scribe Master Pro Scribbling Jig, he states that his initial thought was that it looked like a complex bit kit. However, as soon as he looked closer he quickly realised what each component of the tool was for. The Jig itself comes fully assembled, so you dont need to waste any time assembling it together. There are four simple steps before you’re fitting the skirting to the wall. Firstly, you simply place an off-cut of your material into the setup area. Secondly, you push the combs against the surface of the off-cut using the comb alignment tool to recreate your profile. Once aligned you slightly tighten the knobs and flip the combs over, into the cutting position. Finally you make

that final cut, running the router against the profile. All this just takes a couple of minutes, with the final cutting step taking about 15 seconds of these. This means that once the jig has been set up on one profile, you can create the same scribe over and over again in no time, without leaving any gaps. This sounds good in an ideal world, but bet it doesn’t work out of square walls that aren’t plumb or doing a leading edge or a back cut? However, the answer to all of these is yes, it does. The Scribe Master Pro doesnt see anything as a problem. For example, you could scribe any two different skirting boards together. By hand it would be near enough impossible to scribe in torus skirting into a ovolo skirting. However, the way the Scribe Master Pro is designed and set up. Its just as easy as scribing any other two pieces together. Another example where it sees no difference is the material that’s being scribed - its just another piece of wood. Anyone who’s tried to scribe hardwoods would agree that its much harder to cut and scribe, yet it needs to be more accurate if its going to be stained. The Jig is constructed from a high pressure laminate, making it very

durable yet light. It also has thermal properties that ensure each component slides over each other regardless of it being too hot ot too cold. The combs, nuts and bolts are all stainless steel, so they’ll never see a crust of rust. With the use of 1/4in. router bit and a 30mm router guide bush, you can cut boards up to 195mm tall and 32mm thick. Quick and accurate method to scribe skirting and dado rails using a router. • Cuts precise scribes in just 15 seconds using a medium duty router with a 30mm guide bush fitted. • Fully variable, cuts left and right hand scribes. • Up to ten times faster than manual scribes. • Up to 195mm tall boards and m maximum 32mm thickness. • Min length of component is 300mm. • Scribes profiles into kitchen plinths. • Scribes warped boards accurately. • Can be used on out-of-plumb walls. • Includes HSS 4mm spiral 1/4-inch shank router cutter and comb aligning tool. • Made from High Pressure Laminate for stability. • Requires a medium or heavy duty plunge router. • Patent No. GB2441513. • A Unibase may be required for certain makes and models of router.

Polypipe provides flood alleviation for retrofit scheme at ‘lost’ London river An ambitious pilot scheme designed to combine engineered and soft SuDS solutions to alleviate the risk of flooding from west London’s combined sewers has seen Polypipe’s Permavoid system used to create two unique shallow stormwater drainage systems that are sensitive to their environment. A third scheme will begin this autumn using Polypipe’s Permavoid system to complete the project. The project, overseen by Thames Water in partnership with the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, will see SuDS solutions retrofitted into a highly urbanised area, in order to potentially mitigate the risk of surface water flooding during periods of heavy rainfall across the Counters Creek catchment area. One of London’s lost rivers, Counters Creek once flowed through the region before being culverted in the 19th century to form part of Joseph Bazalgette’s new sewer network, made necessary due to an increasing population in London. With further building work heavily urbanising the

area featuring many properties with basement levels, the two local authorities and Thames Water have worked together to create the SuDS scheme sites which will be used to monitor performance. This approach is important since the Counters Creek catchment area lost almost a fifth of its permeable green space between 1971 and 2007 due to urbanisation and no local open watercourses remain. This increased the risk of the local sewer network flooding due to an increase in surface water run-off. In order to assess the varied approaches SuDS can offer, the project saw three scheme sites identified where a number of differing surface water management systems could be

utilised in combination with their surroundings. The three ‘typical’ London streets selected met Thames Water’s criteria of being hydraulically discrete and having suitable monitoring points to measure the system’s effectiveness. The SuDS pilot scheme retrofitted in the three streets of the two boroughs will limit, as far as possible, the volume and rate at which surface water enters the public sewer system. Monitoring performance in the three streets should provide evidence to show whether these systems provide a viable solution that could be applied across a wider area. Polypipe’s Permavoid geocellular system was used to create part of an engineered

stormwater solution for each of the selected locations: Mendora Road in Fulham, Melina Road in Shepherd’s Bush and Arundel Gardens in Kensington. These three separate solutions have been developed with specific focus on their particular environment. The two streets in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham have been constructed in collaboration with the borough council, their contractors FM Conway, SEL Environmental, consultant AECOM, and with the final designs reviewed by chosen consultant engineering firm ATKINS. The retrofitted SuDS scheme at Arundel Gardens in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea will be built this autumn in collaboration with the council and their contractors. Harnessing its innate strength and 95% void fill ratio, Permavoid was used beneath

permeable paving under both sides of Mendora Road, a typical suburban street in the region. The 3,600 Permavoid cells form an attenuation solution providing 136m³ of stormwater storage. Due to its location directly beneath residents’ cars, Permafilter geomembrane was also specified beneath the permeable paving in order to treat any stormwater contaminated by oils and pollutants from vehicles before the water enters the storage tank. Architects & Builders are turning to JJI-Joists when looking to build Passivhaus standards

More and more architects and builders are recognising that using JJI-Joists to construct walls and roofs gives them the opportunity to maximise the insulation they are able to incorporate into a building. The shape of the JJI-Joist, with its 9mm OSB web means that cold bridging is reduced and the wide choice of joist depths make it easy to choose a specification that meets the specific design requirement to suit the building and location. Both architects and builders are turning to JJI-Joists when looking to build to Passivhaus standards, using the joists in stick build construction or pre-fabricated cassettes. Because the JJI-Joist allows for high levels of insulation and is easy to work with onsite, creating a structure which meets Passivhaus standards for airtightness is more straightforward, aided by the OSB web which outperforms a metal web joist when it comes to controlling energy movement. With the biggest range of standard sizes on the market with joist depths from 145 to 450 mm, as well as bespoke sizes available to special order, architects, engineers and building contractors know that they can easily specify the right

joist for a job. JJI-Joists come with the best design and engineering support in the business with a team of regional technical sales staff backed up by a design and engineering resource at our manufacturing plant in Scotland. With impeccable environmental credentials, including being available with FSC or PEFC certification, JJI-Joists are the only I-Beam on the market that can be supplied with independently verified carbon data, meaning that we can accurately tell you the carbon impact of the joists in your job. The JJI-Joist system is designed to make your job easier, whether you are an architect, engineer or builder; choosing JJI-Joists means you are guaranteed total peace of mind. www. email: ENQUIRY-Card 529

Alumasc’s Derbigum Olivine cleans the air

. View our publication online at . November 2016 .

Sika Sarnafil branches out with Unique Garden Room Project

Alumasc’s Derbigum Olivine roofing membrane is a highly effective, durable waterproofing solution which also actively purifies the air and makes a positive contribution towards reducing global warming - by neutralising CO2, the most prevalent greenhouse gas. When rainwater comes into contact with the olivine the CO2 is literally washed out of the air. An irreversible chemical reaction takes place which transforms the CO2 into three environmentallyharmless sub-stances -water, magnesium carbonate and sand. For every square metre of Alumasc Derbigum Olivine roofing membrane, 1.75kg of CO2 is neutralised. Whilst other so-called ‘environmentally friendly’ membranes incorporate titanium dioxide and require either sulphuric acid or chlorine gas in their production, the Olivine in Alumasc’s Derbigum Olivine surfacing is 100% naturally occurring and simply requires grinding down to the right size.

In possibly the only building of its kind in the UK, Sika Sarnafil single ply membrane has been used to waterproof a garden room with a live tree growing through it. Hackney-based architect, Andrew Leckenby, specialises in working with private clients to improve their homes. But when it came to extending his family home, Andrew became his own client. Living in an urban area meant imagination was required to increase his living area. Deciding to make the most of his home’s outdoor space, Andrew settled on a garden room. However, the rear of the garden contained a beautiful false acacia tree, which he did not want to remove. Thinking outside the box, Andrew drew up plans for a room that would incorporate the tree, making it the focal point of the space. ENQUIRY-Card 124 ENQUIRY-Card 125

IKO PLC in DIY SOS for BBC Children in Need “There’s a sea of hard hats outside and rivers of tears within,” says Kay Soper, Support Services Manager for Blackpool Carers, the latest charity to benefit from the amazing work undertaken by BBC TV’s DIY SOS. As Thursday 17th November’s DIY SOS: Million Pound Build for BBC Children in Need revealed, the recent venture was one of the programme’s most ambitious and heartfelt projects to date. Waterproofing and roofing manufacturer IKO PLC was proud to be part of it. IKO donated rolls of Perforated Sand venting underlay and Challenger pour-and-roll sand-surfaced membrane to the development through distributor North West Roofing Supplies. The roofing materials were used in the renovation of Blenheim House, a neglected Victorian house owned by charity Blackpool Carers Centre.

World Championship success for Team GB Amidst intense competition from around the world, the skills and talents of four of the UK’s most talented young roofers were put through their gruelling paces at the World Championship for Young Roofers final. Organised by the International Federation of Roofing Contractors (IFD), the competition was staged over three days 26th - 28th October 2016 and took place in Warsaw, Poland. The task to win a medal at this leading event is by no means easy. However, the UK duo competing in the waterproofing roofing category beat off contenders from all corners of the globe to win one of the prestigious President’s Prizes for Innovation that are awarded for each category covering pitched, waterproofing and metal roofing. This was a voluntary task that allowed competitors to use their own creativity and initiative utilising a range of roofing products. Congratulations go to Jordan Lane of Lane Roofing Ltd (Birmingham) and Ben Revitt of Briggs Amasco (Birmingham). ENQUIRY-Card 126 ENQUIRY-Card 127

KEMPEROL MEMBRANES PUT PICCADILLY GATE’S ROOFS BACK ON TRACK Three roofs of one of Manchester’s most iconic office buildings have been refurbished with an overlay of Kemperol liquid membranes from Kemper System. Piccadilly Gate is home to various Government departments including Education, Ofsted and Highways England. The 125,000sqft building adjacent to Manchester Piccadilly Station was refurbished in a £25 million BREEAM ‘Excellent’ scheme in 2010. Issues with the integrity of the roof had continually plagued the building with leaks, resulting in unsightly staining to the suspended ceilings within. Consequently, the decision was taken to overlay the existing single ply roofing membranes on levels 10, 4 and 3 with a cold-applied liquid system from Kemper System. Roofing contractor, Castle Roofing, was appointed to carry out the works and selected Kemper System’s solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR as the most appropriate solution for the level 10 roof. Explains Mark Atherton from Castle Roofing: “The level 10 roof is directly above occupied office areas and is also the location for the building’s air handling plant, so nuisance odours could potentially have been transferred into the office areas. “As a result, we chose to use Kemper System’s 2K-PUR system, which is solvent-free and odourless, while still offering high performance and a BBAaccredited 25-year service life.” The level 4 roof is above the building’s record-breaking extra-long escalators and leaks from two water outlets had caused staining of the suspended ceiling. This roof was also refurbished as an overlay system, using Kemper System’s Kemperol V210. Having cleaned and prepared the existing roof surface, Castle Contractors applied a primer before applying the resin in a single wet-on-wet process in

which the resin is first applied to the substrate; reinforcement fleece is then laid directly on to the wet resin, immediately followed by more resin on top. This ensures complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece. Once cured, the resin forms a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate, is UV stable and bonds directly to the substrate. For the green roof on level 3, Castle Roofing carried out the refurbishment in two sections, removing half the green roof medium and installing Kemperol V210 onto to the existing surface as an overlay before replacing it and lifting the second section so that the new roofing membrane could be installed. The second section was then reinstated, completing the programme.

Comments Jim Fozzard, building manager at Piccadilly Gate: “We needed a roofing system that could be installed quickly to prevent any further damage to the building’s interior, while minimising any disruption to occupiers and maintaining Piccadilly Gate’s high aesthetic standards. “Using Kemperol 2K-PUR on the level 10 roof meant that occupiers were not affected by any changes to air quality, while all three roofs have been overlaid using a seamless membrane without the use of hot works for a durable solution requiring no strip out.” ENQUIRY-Card 533

Alumasc’s independently insured Euroroof SupaGOLD roofing system provides London Met Police with the perfect flat roof solution 2,200m2 of Alumasc’s SupaGOLD Waterproofing System has been installed at the Metropolitan Police Authority’s Quicksilver Patrol Base in London. Following numerous historic patchwork repairs to the existing waterproofing system, Vinci Facilities commissioned Alumasc to perform a detailed site survey of all flat roof areas. The resulting Roof Condition Report stated that the original system integrity was seriously compromised, with high levels of ponding, standing water and leakage to the main roof area. Varying levels of deterioration across the roof areas were also recorded and clear recommendations for how these would

be addressed were given within the site specific specification. Alumasc’s SupaGOLD Waterproofing System was advised as the perfect replacement for this roof as a key requirement for this project was that the system must be independently insured for up to 20 years. Vinci Facilities appointed approved installer TR Freeman to refurbish the 2,200m2 of existing roof areas using Alumasc’s Euroroof SupaGOLD Warm Roof System, to deliver high-performance waterproofing and a fully engineered tapered insulation scheme to ensure effective water management was maintained across the surface and eliminate the past, ongoing problems of standing water on the roof. The waterproofing system also included the refurbishment

of the original roof lights with Alumasc bespoke Roof lights. The first step was the complete strip and removal of the deteriorated waterproofing system from the metal deck beneath. Appropriate surface preparation to the area was then undertaken prior to the installation of the Vapour Control Layer; providing immediate protection against water ingress into the main building and offices below. Areas identified as suitable for “upgrade” received necessary preparation works and surface conditioning, prior to the application of the proposed specification. The Alumasc cut to falls (tapered) scheme was designed to enhance and overcome the existing design falls to

each respective roof area. The design brief for the drainage plan was to utilise the existing drainage locations, remove standing water from all roof areas and meet the target u-value of an average 0.18W/m2K. TR Freeman then applied the Euroroof SupaGOLD waterproofing system, which comprised of a Vapour Barrier, PU bonded PIR Insulation SUPA XL Underlay and finally the Euroroof SupaGOLD capping sheet. Effective planning and teamwork was essential, as all of the work had to be completed without disrupting the functioning of this critically important Police Response Unit – the unit needed to remain fully operational at all times Robert Bruce, Operations Manager of Vinci Facilities commented: “The service and support from the initial survey through to completion was excellent. Alumasc provided us with the solutions we needed, such as the design of the tapered roof scheme to help with drainage. The 20 year independently insured system that was proposed helped us meet the key requirement for this project. We have worked very closely with & Alumasc Roofing Systems & again the project has gone as expected.” ENQUIRY-Card 536

A front door is one of the most used parts of the house. It is the first to greet visitors and a key area that can let in the cold during winter. Garador’s recently launched FrontGuard Plus range of entrance doors has been specifically designed to provide the ultimate in functionality and design for a new generation of modern doors. With FrontGuard Plus, Garador has taken front door weatherproofing and insulation to a new level. The door leaf is filled with 65mm thick high-density polyurethane foam, providing high thermal efficiency with overall U-Values down to 0.87 W/m2k. With a well-engineered design that includes a sturdy aluminium frame with thermal breaks and insulating polyurethane foam built in to eliminate thermal bridges and minimise heat loss. The doors also feature durable, water-proof rubber seals on all four sides of the door panel to keep the weather outside. “Key thermal performance and security issues were considered in the design of this exciting range of front doors,” said Simon Hipgrave, managing director of Garador. “The idea was to break through the traditional designs and styles in entrance door engineering to provide a brand new range of doors with high functionality, simple installation and of course great thermal performance and security. ”

with three way adjustable hinges the door is ready for a quick and easy installation. A five point security locking system comes as standard on all doors and FrontGuard Plus doors in the range are available with RC2 security equipment as an option. The five point locking system includes two swing bolts and two security bolts at the top and bottom of the door, as well as a soft lock latch and locking rod in the middle of the door; all of this combined provides excellent security. These doors can also be supplied with an electric strike plate, which has a day catch mode that won’t let the door get pushed open by a gust of wind, but does allow you to gain access through a firm push of the door. Design of course is a vital aspect, and these doors come in eye-catching modern and contemporary ranges in a choice of colours and wood effect finishes. Each door has been carefully designed to complement both progressive new builds and traditional styling. You can order transom lights to fill a larger opening size and giving a more prestigious effect to the door. Anti-shatter glass windows have been included in some doors to allow in light; these incorporate a sand-blasted float glazed effect to maintain privacy.

Professional approval for the JigTech Door Handle Fitting System Since taking the industry by storm with the latest innovation in door handle fitting, Dale Hardware wanted to find out exactly how their customers were benefitting from using the Jigtech Pro fitting system. With over 20 years of experience in the trade, Tony Walker of Tony Walker Construction was keen to test out Jigtech whilst working on a variety of new builds, large extensions and refurbishments in the Sheffield region. Before being introduced to Jigtech, Tony and his team were fitting door handle systems using a standard tubular latch and keep plate with square face – a method that could take up to 25 minutes per door. Although this is a professional standard, to which most tradespeople are used to, the method meant fitting times were lengthy and the amount of different tools needed for the job meant it was inconvenient for workers to move between fittings. Since moving to the Jigtech system, the team can now fit a door handle system in five

minutes with the use of an easy and precise method. Tony adds, “There is time to be saved on each aspect of the job and the use of a complete kit means my team only need a drill and hammer to fit each door handle set.” He continues to say, “The Jigtech handle bolts within the kit allow for easy fitting and they require no re-drilling. The use of the latch locator also means we can save time adjusting the keep.” Tony Walker Construction is now able to fit up to 20 more doors in a week, which equates to around two more houses

each week– improving profitability for the developer and Tony. The main question many potential customers have is whether the quality of the fitting is compromised as a result of the reduced fitting time, however Tony noted that the quality of finish is faultless and the Jigtech ensures a professional standard every time. Jigtech also has a range of door

furniture that Tony is particularly impressed with – an opinion shared by his clients who are delighted with the finish of the plates. Tony adds, “My clients have all been exceptionally pleased with Jigtech’s range of door furniture which covers a variety of modern and popular styles. There is a perfect handle and finish for everyone.”

Eurocell patio door provides stringent security for a Lifetime Fabricators and installers can now offer house builders and developers a high aesthetic, high performance and easilyfitted in-line PVC-U patio door system that, when specified to PAS24 standards, automatically meets Approved Document Q of the Building Regulations. The Eurocell Euroslide system has been developed specially to meet the challenges of the amended Part Q; and it is believed to be the first patio door to conform this stringent security standard as well as Lifetime Homes Standard specifications, where applicable. The regulatory change, effective since October 2015, sets out what it describes as ‘reasonable standards’ for doors and windows in new dwellings to resist physical attack by a casual or opportunist burglar, by being both sufficiently robust and fitted with appropriate

hardware. Euroslide is an easily fitted inline PVC-U patio door that is suitable for any development subject to Building Control such as new build and large extensions. Euroslide can also be retro-fitted so that homeowners can enjoy the benefits of patio doors while reducing the risks of becoming burglary victims. Euroslide incorporates a fullyfabricated aluminium interlock with a three-point locking mechanism that has three pairs of 304-grade stainless steel interlock protectors and is operated by a small ergonomically-designed lever located just 900mm above the floor. The height of the lever is an important feature, enabling it to be used easily by everyone including wheelchair users –– which means that the door meets the guidelines set out in Lifetime Homes, where still required; and also meets the trend towards increasingly ‘multi-generational’ dwellings. An added advantage to this versatile system is that it can be installed with Eurocell’s low threshold to comply fully with Part M access requirements – also overhauled in October 2015 after the Government’s Housing Standards Review. Other features that make a PAS24-specification Euroslide patio door such an effective barrier to intruders include a

QB3, is a simple building, on one level. Its only 18m² which is highly energy efficient, with its NorDan Passivhaus standard triple glazed windows, air source heat pumps, moving walls and everything else you would expect in such an incredible building. Dr Mike Page, director of Cube Project, is Reader in Psychology, and Head of Research Centre in Psychology and Sport Sciences at University of Hertfordshire. He says: “ QB3, is a development of an idea that we first explored in a building for Channel 4’s Gadget Man. We originally set out to build a home with an internal size no bigger than 4 x 3 x 3 metres, in which 2 people could live a comfortable modern existence, with a minimum impact on the environment. This was the original “Cube”. It took up a smaller footprint and was easily transported and built on site. QB3 can be supplied with solar photovoltaic panels and a green roof, which would make it energy neutral over a one year period.” The post and beam structure has been developed jointly with Bolton Buildings who also supply the QB3. The outer structure can be assembled and water tight within four hours, with the rest – inner / outer walls, windows, doors, insulation, electrics going up to completion within 3 – 4 days. The building is easily transported by road and sited. It is appropriate for wherever a static caravan would be permitted. Dr Mike Page, the designer and developer of this innovative building says:” this construction is ideal for boomerang kids, for use as a holiday home, emergency accommodation or for workers located remotely for a job.” NorDan supplied triple glazed top swing timber window and a 3 handled “Stormguard” picture window with thermally broken frame to increase

heavy-duty door sash reinforcement to protect against forced entry and high winds and an anti-lift fixture that stops intruders lifting panes out of the door frame – a common weak spot in traditional door and window design. The design ensures that intruders cannot reach any of the gaskets and sealants to gain entry because they are applied from the inside. As with any Eurocell PVC-U product, Euroslide has an exact colour-match guarantee, so that the colour is precisely matched to all Eurocell window, door and conservatory roof products, creating a co-ordinated, consistent look across any property. Euroslide is normally manufactured with a white internal finish to maintain a bright, fresh interior, but some colours are available on both sides from stock. White, golden oak, anthracite grey, rosewood, and black ash are supplied with a white interior finish while cream, rosewood, golden oak and Irish oak are available with matching finishes externally and internally. energy efficiency, along with the glazed entrance door. Inside the building has a full size bed, energy efficient kitchen with induction hob, A+++fridge and moveable walls which enable the maximum use of the space. The kitchen wall can be “wound” back to access the washing machine and shower area, and the bedroom shelving can also be easily moved to create more space in the bedroom. The moveable walls were developed by Europes leading storage system company, Bruynzeel, who develop and manufacture traditional storage systems used in university libraries and museums for archives. Heating is provided by two air source heat pumps, one set in the hot water tank. QB3 was featured at this year’s Edinburgh Science Festival in St Andrews Square. Comar 7P.i Folding Sliding Door System (FSD) Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems are delighted to launch their thermally broken Comar 7P.i Folding Sliding Door (FSD). Smooth operation and solutions to meet the design brief, the aluminium Comar 7P.i Folding/Sliding Door (FSD) system offers a myriad of possibilities for commercial or residential projects. Comar 7P.i FSD provides a versatile moveable wall that allows space and light into any project. Even in the winter months the glazed facade offers light as well as keeping the building insulated

through the trade-marked Comar 7P.i thermal break technology. By merging aesthetically pleasing features such as robust, yet slim, aluminium profiles with feature-laden operational gearing from the Comar 7P.i FSD system, you have the capability to design open-in or open-out stacking doors, folding and sliding from the top or the bottom rollers. Open-in stacking

doors are advisable when the doors must operate within the building plane; open-out stacking doors can be used so the doors do not interfere with interior furnishings. If bottom rolling options are required the gear is housed in the floor which offers uninterrupted traffic flow compliant with the very latest disability and equalities act legislation. Top-hung operating gear would be selected for larger sized doors. For additional safety the doors when folding offer a finger protection solution. To cater for different apertures the Comar 7P.i FSD offers from 2 to 8 sliding doors in either direction with an optional rebated door for day to day ease of entry. Each leaf can be up to 1100mm wide, creating market leading potential spans with minimum sightlines. Door heights can be up to

2400mm, but depending on wind loading larger sizes can be created; this is especially useful for floor to ceiling glazing or to create an entrance of distinction. Glazing sizes of up to 62mm are catered for, which means that triple glazed or acoustic glasses can be specified as well as panels or standard double glazed units. Due to the trade-marked P.i thermal efficiency U-values are well below the required Building Regulations targets. The doors and jamb are both adjustable to enable long-term smooth operation and to adapt to different building tolerances. Comar: Designed for Performance, Backed by Delivery ENQUIRY-Card 546

Universal trade frames supplies vertical sliders for heritage cottage The Vertical Slider window system from Spectus Window Systems has been used in a major Welsh coastal cottage renovation project. Supplied by trade fabricator and by Spectus customer, Universal Trade Frames Ltd (UTFL) and installed by Aberystwyth-based installer C&H Windows Glass & Glazing Ltd, the project included ten vertical slider windows in Chartwell Green, as UTFL Director Brian Kruger explains. “Having no reservations about using UPVC as the foiled woodgrain profile mimics timber, the authentic looking Spectus Vertical Slider system was a natural choice in every way. The new windows replaced old, draughty, hardwood vertical sliders, and due to the property’s seafront position, weather resistance was a big part of the homeowner’s requirements.

AECOM REPORT ON LIFE CYC COSTING: CONTINUOUS FLO up to 7% more COST effecti AECOM, a major global player in the building

consultancy arena, has concluded a report showing that continuous flow water heating systems have a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs as well as life cycle costs over 20 years, when compared with stored hot water systems*.

YCLE LOW ctive The study** shows that continuous flow water heating systems can be up to 7% more economical than equivalent ‘traditional’ stored hot water systems. AECOM was commissioned to carry out a life cycle study on continuous flow water heating systems, and to provide a comparison with conventional storage systems. Two case studies were provided that are based on projects using continuous flow water heating systems. AECOM then determined an equivalent storage based system for each case study and compared operational and capital costs. For the life cycle comparison, the analysis period was 20 years, based on the expected service life.

The net present value (NPV) calculation is based on a discount rate of 3.5% (The GREEN BOOK - HM Treasury), an inflation rate of 2% for servicing costs and projected retail fuel costs from DECC1. In both case studies the continuous flow system showed a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs, as well as life cycle costs over 20 years, with the continuous flow system consistently lower in energy use than the two storage systems.

The life cycle analysis includes the initial capital costs, projected annual fuel costs, and estimated annual servicing costs which are assumed to increase by 2% each year. The annual fuel cost assumes the same daily fuel consumption over the whole year. The servicing cost is based on £130/year per boiler, and £160/year for a boiler and cylinder. The resulting net present values of the three showed that the continuous flow system is 6 - 7% lower than the two storage systems based on that 20-year analysis period.

SYSTEMS EMPLOYED IN THE STUDY * Indirect fired storage systems This consists of separate heat source and storage cylinders, where for this study the heat source will be gas fired boilers running on 80ºC flow and 60ºC return with gross efficiency of 89%. As the hot water is stored at 60ºC in insulated cylinders there will be standing heat losses. The standby electricity is assumed to be 15W per boiler, and 60W when operating to cover fan and controls. -------------------------------------------

Case study 1 This was a system for a typical, small, pre-fabricated fast food restaurant. It is assumed the system only serves the hot water demand.

Case study 2 This was a system for a shower block in a holiday camp, with six showers and four basin taps. For the continuous flow option, the analysis is based on a configuration of 4 continuous flow water heaters that each have a nominal output of 48 kW, which. For this particular application, because there is a very short run of pipe work between the water heaters and the fixtures, it is possible for the water heaters to generate water at 40°C. The risk of legionella is overcome by regular flushing of the system. For the energy required to deal with the instantaneous hot water demand the analysis assumes that the bulk of the hot water demand would be due to the showers. Each shower would typically have a flow rate of around 9 litres per minute, which if mixed to 40ºC would equate to an instantaneous load of around 19 kW each, so even if there was only one shower running, the load on a single continuous flow water heater would equate to an efficiency of 95% based on the performance curve. As the hot water demand increases, the modular nature of this particular configuration would allow the 95% efficiency to be maintained for the bulk of the demand. The difference in daily fuel costs between the three systems is around 7%. The usage profile for this case study is particularly suited to continuous flow systems (i.e. high but infrequent demand over the day), which is why there is an advantage in fuel consumption over the storage systems.

Direct fired storage systems This is where the hot water storage cylinder has an integral gas burner to directly heat the water, and the key difference with indirect fired storage systems is that they are designed to operate in condensing mode and generally achieve gross efficiency up to 96%. A disadvantage of direct fired storage systems is that the standing losses are around 3 times higher than indirect storage cylinders. ------------------------------------------Continuous flow systems This is essentially a gas boiler that is designed to instantaneously heat mains water for supply directly to water fixtures without any storage. The key advantages with this type of hot water heating, is firstly saving in space needed for hot water cylinders and the associated standing heat losses. The challenge is that instantaneous hot water demand can vary hugely for most systems and therefore the continuous flow heating system needs to have a wide modulation range as well as maintaining efficiency over that range. SALUS spearheads a revolution in TRVs

Unique advantages for the user and the installer

When it comes to heating controls, SALUS is renowned for its pioneering designs and new technologies. Hence, it’s no surprise to learn that the company is now shaking up the TRV sector with the unveiling of a groundbreaking TRV pack. Set to end the days of TRVs as we currently know them, this exciting development will energise installers’ business and put energy control and comfort at the homeowners’ fingertips. The unique TRV pack features a new digital thermostat and a battery-powered, mini-size thermostatic radiator valve that can be wall wall-mounted or freestanding. Unlike any other TRV on the market, this latest design cleverly takes its temperature reading from the thermostat, and not the radiator. As such, it is more accurate than a conventional TRV, and is not affected by its surroundings; such as curtains near the radiator or direct sunlight.

Vasco is launching the revolutionary designer radiator ONI onto the UK market his month. ONI is made of 8mm reinforced aluminium plate making it the thinnest Vasco radiator ever made. In addition to the progressive design of this radiator, this champion in the lightweight category also offers advantages for the installer; the story of a perfect match between form and function. The reinforced aluminium plate of the ONI hides a winding copper heating tube with minimal water content, which is cut into the rear of the front plate 2 mm from the surface. That way, ONI not only achieves its ultra flat design of only 8 mm, but due to the rapid interaction between copper and aluminium it is also an energysaving and efficient source of heat; plus it is ideal in combination with low temperature systems. Worcester unveils xtra boost for hot water efficiency

Ideal Commercial Boilers work out at Lymington Health Centre

Worcester, Bosch Group has launched a brand new boiler flue gas heat recovery unit, designed to help housebuilders and public sector providers, achieve the best possible hot water efficiency levels. The Greenstar Xtra unit connects directly to the flue of the boiler and uses a highly efficient plate heat exchanger, to extract residual energy from waste gases. This energy is then used to pre-warm the incoming mains water which feeds the combi boiler – reducing the overall amount of gas required to heat the water to the required temperature. Developed to help properties achieve highest possible SAP ratings, the unit not only limits gas consumption and CO2 emissions, it also helps to reduce utility bills by delivering added hot water efficiency.

Four Ideal Commercial Evomax 100 boilers with frame and header kits have been installed as part of an extensive retrofit at the Lymington Health & Leisure centre in Lymington, Hampshire. The new Evomax boilers, which were specified by loyal customer New Forest District Council, were installed in the boiler room to supplement two older, standard efficiency boilers which were deemed to be inefficient and did not modulate, meaning output was all or nothing when fired. New Forest District Council have implemented a programme of refurbishments across numerous council sites involving Evomax and other Ideal Commercial boilers. The council has found the combination of ease of installation and high efficiency readings to be very impressive, along with an attractive appearance. SANIFLO ROADSHOW BOOSTS KINEDO SALES Building better bathrooms’ roadshow has been so successful that it will take to the road again in 2017 visiting new venues with new products. This year, the brand new, purpose-built roadshow truck took in 80 venues in England, Wales and Ireland from May through October with more than 600 installers and builders visiting the truck in England and Wales, and more than 220 installers visiting in Ireland, where they chatted with the Saniflo technical and sales teams who were on hand to answer questions and discuss how installers can improve their earnings by fitting Kinedo cubicles – often in just a couple of hours. A direct result of the roadshow has been an increase in the number of Kinedo showroom displays being ordered, and excellent feedback from attendees including showroom and merchant staff who were taught how to build the Kinedo shower cubicles. The sessions featured installation demonstrations of the Kinemagic Design shower cubicle and product showcases of the latest Kinemagic Serenity cubicle and a customisable Kineduo shower bath.

Ann Boardman, Saniflo UK Customer Services and Marketing Manager, comments: “We’re delighted with the feedback and results of the Saniflo Building better bathrooms roadshow. Our hands-on approach has led to a direct increase in showroom displays of the Kinedo shower cubicles. Visitors were able to see for themselves just what a valuable business proposition Kinedo shower cubicles offer. Industry professionals are realising that specifying Kinedo shower cubicles means they can boost their income whilst offering their customers a swift and hassle-free showering solution without the need for grout or silicone.” Plumb-It Managing Director Brian Cooper, who was also delighted with the Saniflo roadshow, comments: “The Saniflo roadshow has really helped to get installers on board with Kinedo shower cubicles and this is vital as they’re the ones who have contact with the end user. I’m convinced that as more installers become aware of Kinedo shower cubicles and just how convenient they are, sales of the shower cubicles will continue to grow.” ENQUIRY-Card 561

Kaldewei’s new washbasins

Tried and Tested over 7 million times

Lineal Smoke from Showerwall gives showering a sophisticated edge Lineal Smoke, one of the new 14 new designs in the Showerwall Infinity Collection, is a design that will give showering a sense of modern sophistication. The linear design of this décor is both modern and elegant, bringing together the fashion for grey tones and natural materials. Combining black, white and grey, Lineal Smoke will work for a range of bathroom styles from traditional through to contemporary and will appeal to different age groups. Lineal Smoke is available in a square cut 1200mm wide x 2440mm high panel in a high gloss texture that is high performance and easy maintenance. Showerwall Infinity offers 14 design-led panelling décors, and complements the flagship Showerwall Standard Collection that offers a further 40 designs to choose from.

Kaldewei’s new washbasins made of steel enamel will be a key feature at Sleep this year. Already a well established brand for baths and shower trays/surfaces, the introduction of this new segment, means bathrooms can now be fitted out using a single material, a harmonious design vocabulary and a matching colour scheme. The Silenio washbasin by Anke Salomon is distinguished by exceptionally soft interior lines. Flowing gently inwards from both sides, the lines open out into a soft hollow which contrasts with the rear section of the basin which falls steeply. The spacious surround offers plenty of room for fittings and accessories. All Silenio washbasins are now also available without overflow hole, enhancing the natural, soft lines of the washbasins still further. The washbasins are made from Kaldewei’s unique steel enamel; the exceptionally tough surface is extremely smooth, scratch resistant, hygienic and easy to clean.

Max-Top place hold on price increases for 2017

Comprehensive grab rail range can’t be beaten

Kitchen and bathroom surface specialist, Max-Top, has reported it intends to freeze prices for the next 12 months to accommodate fluctuations in the financial market following Brexit and now the effects of US election result. With consumer confidence, interest rates, and the pound falling in the months following the referendum, the company has taken action to reduce the financial tremors felt in the UK by keeping its Max-Top Quartz product at the same price. Stephen Moss, managing director of Max-Top Quartz, said: “Import costs and currency fluctuations have affected imported goods, forcing some companies to increase prices accordingly. However, we have taken the decision that we are in the right financial position to keep the cost of our work surface the same.

Leading inclusive bathroom solutions supplier AKW offers a comprehensive range of grab rails in many configurations for installation as a mobility support in bathrooms, particularly for the elderly and disabled. The grab rails include fixed and fold-up steel and plastic versions, some fluted for additional grip and others with a smooth grip. AKW fold-up support rails – ideal for use in multi-user bathrooms – are available in white or blue for users with impaired vision. Cranked grab rails are manufactured from a long-lasting cold drawn mild steel tube. They feature an offset design which allows the user to step up to and through the doorway without releasing the grip and avoiding the possibility of hand grazing. ENQUIRY-Card 142 ENQUIRY-Card 143

Crown’s regional champions say thanks for community recycling support SEVEN high-flying Crown Decorating Centres across the UK are preparing to say a big thank you to the communities which helped them scoop top awards in a national campaign. The annual Kick Out The Can paint recycling scheme saw one Crown Decorating Centre from each of seven regions top the polls for collecting the most containers of surplus paint for recycling. And now each store is preparing to choose a charity group from its local community to win a free makeover, as a thank you for helping them achieve record results. The winning Crown Decorating Centres for each of the network’s seven regional sales areas were: Stirling, Sunderland, Altrincham, Coventry, Worcester, Norwich and Oxford. Explained Crown Decorating Centres marketing manager Danielle Holmes: “This year saw more than double the number of containers of surplus paint

returned to Crown Decorating Centres across the UK. There were an amazing 20,000 cans of unwanted paint returned to stores. “It seems only right that the communities and decorators who supported the campaign most successfully should reap the benefits. So, this year we are urging local not-forprofit groups in these areas to tell us why they could use a consignment of free recycled paint - creating a truly virtuous recycling circle.” Kick Out The Can was established in 2013 and has gone from strength to strength each year. Sheds, cupboards and garages across the country are thought to hold around 54 million litres of unused paint, and the annual scheme, which runs each Easter aims to give a

new lease of life to the product. All of the paint brought into the stores is reprocessed by social enterprise company, Nimtech, before being distributed to deserving community projects across the UK. The scheme is just one of Crown Paints’ commitments delivering its sustainability targets and its work in this field has been recognised by several

prestigious regional and national awards. For more information on Kick Out The Can visit crown/sustainability ENQUIRY-Card 573

Altro resins break new ground on North Herts College new campus Altro resin flooring is providing the ultimate in colour, flexibility and durability on an award-winning, £10 million refurbished campus at North Hertfordshire College, in Hitchin. Altro FlexiflowTM and Altro MultiScreedTM EP Naturals have been used within the multi-functional hub space on the new campus, which links three teaching buildings. The award-winning design for the new campus was created by international design practice Scott Brownrigg.

Associate Clark Barton explains how Altro resins played a part in his vision: “The new campus is open plan, bright, colourful, modern yet functional, and it was vital that the flooring should reflect and complement this. We specified Altro resins for the college hub because these products offer the range of colours and textures to enable us to be innovative and flexible in our design. In addition, it was imperative that the flooring was high performance and practical, and Altro’s credentials offer this. “The entire project was very much a collaborative effort,” added Clark. “We worked closely with Altro, the main contractor, the college, and also the students, who were instrumental in choosing colours and themes.” Altro Flexiflow resin flooring was one of the key products in the specification, as Clark explained. “We chose this flooring for the ground floor hub, and leading into each of the other three buildings, because we wanted a seamless, solid, practical surface. “It was also paramount that the flooring in this area was flexible enough to move with the building without cracking. The hub space is multifunctional, with the furniture and layout changed on a regular basis, so the flooring needs to be able to withstand this, which Altro Flexiflow is designed to do. Altro was able to create a special bespoke Altro Flexiflow colour for the college. “Choosing the colour for the flooring was a collaborative effort, involving all the key stakeholders, college students and staff,” said Clark. “It was important that the colour complemented the overall scheme of the hub, and after much discussion, it was decided that purple would be ideal. Altro were shown the shade the college wanted, and they were able to match it exactly. There are some great colours in the existing Altro Flexiflow palette, but from a design point of view being able to choose a bespoke colour is very appealing to clients.” Altro Flexiflow is tough enough to handle high impact areas, yet be flexible enough to move with a building. It gives a uniform and seamless finish with uninterrupted lines, and is self-levelling, which makes installation easy. With 28 colour options it’s flexible enough to fit into any design vision. On the upper floor of the college hub, Clark and

his team chose another resin flooring — Altro MultiScreed EP Naturals, in White Yorkstone. “This flooring works very well in contrast with the smooth texture of the Altro Flexiflow. It’s also a tough, practical flooring that’s easy to clean.” Altro Multiscreed EP Naturals is a tough surface that can handle the hardest bumps and knocks. A solvent-free epoxy resin system, it has a natural appearance with nine colours evoking tones of concrete and stone. The product has improved performance and produces a high strength floor with exceptional abrasion and chemical resistance. With a nominal thickness of 4mm, it can be coved and laid to falls. The Altro Flexiflow and Altro Multiscreed EP Naturals resin floors were installed by Resincraft, who have worked with Altro products for 30 years. The company is run by directors Mark Brewer and Richard Mitchell. Mark said: “As far as we’re concerned, Altro resins are the best on the market. The company is also very professional, they deliver on time, give us great back-up, and resolve any problems quickly. “Laying the Altro resins at the college went very smoothly. Altro Flexiflow is an excellent product and easy to work with. First we prepared the new floor in the hub by diamond grinding to create a smooth surface. We then put down a layer of AltroProof SoloTM, which is a waterproof layer, so effectively a dpm. “Then we trowel laid the resin flooring — the product is very free flowing, so it quickly finds its own level. Finally, two coats of top coat were applied. The whole process took about five days to lay 200m2. ENQUIRY-Card 577
