Announces the launch of its new handcrafted range campaign

Roof Solutions R

Sandtoft, the roofing brand of construction supplier Wienerberger, is launching a new campaign to highlight the enduring qualities and age-old manufacturing techniques used to create its Handcrafted range. Both varieties of tile in the range (the Alban and the Barrow), are made from the finest alluvial clay, which has been formed over thousands of years on the flood plains of the River Humber. However, each tile has specific features and applications. The Alban has a lightly sanded texture, irregular form and rustic tones, adding charm and character to any roof, whilst the cross-cambered Barrow handcrafted clay plain tile is available in five colours, and has a subtle form that creates the

appearance of a traditional, aged roof and character. Richard Bishop, Category Marketing Manager at Sandtoft said: “We want to highlight that sometimes the most innovative thing that you can do with your products is to simply stand by their inherent and fundamental quality. The clay we use is thousands of years old and the way we make them has been passed down through the generations – it’s this combination that we think is special, and what really distinguishes these tiles in the market.” “Even putting to one side the durability and sustainability of clay, we think that our Handcrafted range tiles are genuinely beautiful to look at. With that in mind the new

campaign simply aims to show that off, and re-affirm the basic aesthetic quality of these clay tiles.”

IKO launch IKOpro Sprayfast, fast and economical bonding without the backache IKO has introduced a range of sprayapplied PU bonding adhesives specifically developed to offer fasttrack, effective bonding of both insulation boards and polymeric membranes. The introduction of a new canister application system enables IKOpro Sprayfast to be applied quickly and accurately. The controlled bead size function eliminates waste ensuring economical coverage rates, whilst the 3-meter long spray hose applicator ensures that operatives work in an upright position to reduce discomfort. IKO has produced three different formulas to suit a range of applications, from installing insulation boards and VCL’s to single ply polymeric membranes.

Fleece-Backed Roofing Membranes: This Sprayfast system can be applied four times faster than standard rollerapplied PU adhesives and has a cover rate of up to 180m2 per canister. IKOpro Sprayfast FMA is suitable for both large-scale fieldwork as well as detailing. Excellent bond and wind uplift resistance, independently tested by the BRE, means that it can be relied upon to securely bond fleece-backed membranes. PVC Roofing Membranes: This multi-purpose polyurethane twoway stick adhesive enables simple and secure bonding of non-backed PVC roofing membranes to a wide range of substrates. It can be applied twice as fast as standard one-way stick roller applied adhesive, covering one metre square of membrane in as little as 40 seconds, curing in just 30 minutes. Safeguard Europe Energy Saving Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream Design Stormdry has been developed by Safeguard Europe Ltd to create a colourless, breathable and long-lasting waterproofing cream that saves energy. Heating energy savings of up to 29% can be made for a typical building, verified by Giraffe Innovation. Stormdry has also been classified under VAT notice 708/6 for Energy-Saving Materials. The special clearance was given due to Stormdry's particular formulation and performance criteria. This qualifies it for a reduced 5% VAT rate when applied as an energy saving material for insulating walls in residential buildings. The classification is uniquely for Stormdry as masonry creams in general do not meet the criteria requirements.

Application Apply to brick, mortar, stone and concrete in just one coat by brush, roller or spray. Stormdry's penetrating and colourless formula means that it sinks deeply into masonry and the natural, original appearance is retained. Walls are kept dry and warm, significantly increasing their thermal resistance and saving energy for the home.

Performance Energy savings of up to 29% can be made with a payback period of just 4 - 5 years. Stormdry does not block the pores of masonry, so that walls can still "breathe" and permit the movement of water vapour. Stormdry is CE marked and will last for 20 - 30 years.

FOCUS ON : Fire Protection, Safety & Security : KIDDE

AVOIDING PART L RISKS Following implementation of the new Building Regulations Part L this April, concerns are growing that greater air-tightness in new housing could increase carbon monoxide poisoning risks, justifying more stringent requirements for CO alarms.

The main difficulty with CO is that the dangers are often far from obvious and it comes from a surprisingly wide variety of sources – often unpredictable. The latest Part L requires the sealing up of buildings for energy conservation, further reducing scope for air intake and movement naturally around a home, potentially increasing CO risks further. This issue is already recognised by the government’s ‘Green Deal’ initiative for upgrading the energy performance of existing properties. Here, installers should assess the impact of their work on air-tightness and any associated increased risks of CO poisoning. If there is any increase, a CO alarm must be installed. And responsible housing providers acknowledge the problem as well. For example, each of the 28 PassivHaus-certified houses in a recent project by Gentoo are fitted with Kidde CO alarms, despite the absence of fuel-burning appliances within homes. Mandatory requirements for CO alarms are dealt with by Building Regulations Part J - but this is woefully inadequate, only requiring a CO alarm with installation of certain, solid fuel heating appliances. Clearly, an update of Part J is urgently called for to address the problem. In the meantime, all those involved with housing should consider fitting CO alarms as a matter

of course. And the latest generation of selfcontained CO alarms with sealed-in battery from Kidde provide a safe, cost-effective solution. Kidde’s 10LLCO is the only range of 10-year guaranteed alarms with CO sensors – the key component – actually tested throughout a 10year period or longer. Kidde also manufactures its own sensors, allowing tighter quality controls to be applied. The 10LLCO range is specially designed for quick and simple installation by anyone. It offers low cost of ownership, with ‘Best Value’ over the 10-year life, and is ideal for social and private landlords. Both models are small in size with a slim profile and can be wall-mounted or used freestanding. They are simply activated by the slide-on back plate, so preserving battery freshness until needed, and a tamper resisting self-locking installation system avoids alarm theft. One model - 10LLDCO – has a digital display to provide early warning of intermittent and low levels of carbon monoxide. A ‘Peak Level’ button can also help identify CO problems occurring when the property is not occupied. web: www.smoke-alarms.co.uk email: sales@kiddesafety.co.uk Enquiry No.210. www.mclink.co.uk/790-210

Bio-Bubble Technologies

AT ITS BEST

The 1300 Population Bio-Bubble WWTP installed in 2001 for the American computer software giant, SAS Institute, has had such consistent excellent results over the past 10 years, including near full nutrient removal, (Independent Test Results as per the Environment Agency public register, copies available upon request) that the company decided to expand the re-use capacity of this resource from just the irrigation of the cricket pitch, which they provide for the company team and the villagers, to the provision of water for the extensive “Pop-Up irrigation system, which waters many of the Estates beds and precious trees which form part of the arboretum.

The final effluent; having been transferred from the grey water storage tank receives tertiary treatment passing through a 50 micron filter and Ultra violet system enroute to the final effluent storage tank.

Additionally the final effluent from the BioBubble WWTP is also plumbed to feed water to the main office building for toilet flushing.

We count ourselves very fortunate that SAS Institute has given us the opportunity to be able to demonstrate the true environmental credentials of the BioBubble Advanced Aeration Process. The catchment feeding the Bio Bubble treatment plant consists of waste from SAS offices, 300 or more houses, the neighbouring five star Danesfield Hotel and the local village school.

Boscastle At the pretty sea-side Devon village of Boscastle, the scene of devastating flash flood in 2004, Engineers Halcrow used over 7000 sq metres of Maccaferri wire mesh, Reno Mattress units and Mac Mat R geomats in planned remedial work to reinforce and protect embankments of the River Valency, which runs through the village to the sea. Reno Mattresses are large flat wire cages, similar to gabions, lined with filter fabric and filled with site won fill material. At Boscastle, they were overlain with Mac Matt R, a three dimensional mesh reinforced geomat. Together they create a hard, durable embankment protection system capable of withstanding extreme flow velocities and impact from water-born debris. Embankment reinforcement Simplicity, durability and speed of construction have made stone filled Gabions the default material for embankments stabilisation

Beach protection ACBM’s or Articulated Concrete Block Mattresses sit at the heavy end of coastal erosion protection measures. At up to 8.30 tonnes in weight, each ACBM consist of a mattress of individual concrete blocks which are secured together with high strength steel cables. When installed they help stabilise and reinforce intertidal zones and mitigate against the scouring effects of wave action. Coastal containment MacTubes are giant geotextile tubes designed for building coastal and river structures for erosion protection, containment and dewatering of wet slurries and the reusing of dredged material. As a "soft" armoured structure, they offer minimal impact to the environment while providing a cost effective alternative to "hard" structures. MacTubes are designed for use as: revetments - to protect against erosion of shoreline adjacent to existing buildings; as beach protective groins or breakwaters; as dykes - to form a containment area in which to pump dredge spoils; as dune cores and as artificial reefs, installed offshore to replace natural barriers. Green reinforcement Where soft erosion protection is required for vulnerable channel banks, Maccaferri provides pre-bundled Coir Logs which can installed at the water-line where they prevent wave action from damaging river or lake banks. They are designed to rapidly revegetate and can be supplied pre-planted with established riparian species for instant bank vegetation. The plants quickly trap sediment and soils in suspension in the channel flow, refilling eroded pockets in the existing banking. Coir Logs contain densely packed coir fibres within either a polymer mesh 'sausage' or within a woven coir mesh, to produce an entirely natural coir log. These bio-degrade over a period of years to leave a stabilised bank of plant biomass. Emergency hydraulic protection Hand place sand bags are probably the most recognised and basic tool in emergency flood prevention for homes and commercial properties. At a much larger scale MacBags are non-woven polypropylene geotextile enclosures made in a range of sizes and designed to enable machines to lift the pre-filled bag for into position. Software To help engineers model and assess how changes to channel profile and surface characteristics affect crucial flow patterns in rivers, streams and other watercourses, Maccaferri also has a free software package available. The “Macra 1” software package is simple and straightforward to operate and allows users to calculate flow depths in rivers and watercourses and see how altering the channel profile or modifying surface characteristics, such as by adding vegetation or applying protective measures, can affect watercourse performance, instantaneously.

20 Roofing, Cladding & Insulation Glidevale Aluflash – more than lead replacement

Glidevale’s Aluflash provides an environmentally friendly, realistic alternative to traditional lead flashing. Aluflash is a composite of a lacquer coated aluminium layer, fully backed by a high tack butyl adhesive layer. Aluflash removes the inherent risk of lead theft whilst delivering a product whose malleability means it can be easily and efficiently laid over and around complex shapes. The non toxic construction also enables its use as a flashing in water harvesting projects. Further, Glidevale’s Aluflash has an AA fire rating, enabling unrestricted use regardless of the proximity of neighbouring buildings. With its third party certification from BM TRADA (certificate number CPS 015) Aluflash is a quality product that

can be installed with confidence. Glidevale Aluflash is available in two finishes: • Embossed – this finish is designed for applications requiring less complex shapes such as pitched roof valleys, soakers and box gutters. • Cross corrugated – this unique finish is designed for use where the flashing has to be moulded over and around complex shapes such as profiled roof tiles and corner details and allows the Aluflash to curve and bend in more than one direction at once. The surface finish can be easily wiped clean to remove dirt and debris and comes in traditional “lead grey” to compliment the building aesthetics. A recyclable polymer backing sheet helps keep the self adhesive butyl layer clean until required ensuring a secure bond. Alun Price Product Manager for Glidevale says: “Aluflash is not only an excellent alternative to traditional lead flashing, for many applications it is actually the best product for the job. Good examples of these applications include dressing dormer windows, lining box gutters and flashing onto glazed areas such as conservatories. Aluflash is unaffected by temperature, can be laid effectively in hot or cold conditions and is compatible with all common roof materials – concrete, clay, slate and metal. www.glidevale.com Enquiry No.225. www.mclink.co.uk/790-225

A greener approach to Private/Social Schemes Telford Homes’ Parkside Quarter development on the outskirts of Canary Wharf, is the latest residential development to launch on Stebondale Street, E14 3DF, Isle of Dogs. The 64 apartments in the development’s main five-story block will be marketed to private buyers by Telford Homes, while a separate 4storey block containing 17 apartments will be let by EastendHomes and the housing association will also offer five apartments in a further four-storey block for shared-ownership. While the target market for the private and social housing elements of the scheme may be very different, many elements of the specification are the same; including the green roofs that will feature on all three blocks. Green Surroundings Designed by David Wood Architects, the Parkside Quarter scheme is named after

the acres of parkland that lies adjacent to it on the Isle of Dogs, in an enviable location that is only a few minutes’ walk away from the banks of the Thames. The use of green roofs on all three apartment buildings, therefore, connects the residential scheme to its location, creating synergy with its green surroundings. The green roofs were installed by roofing contractor Cawston Roofing using the cold liquid-applied waterproofing membrane, Kemperol V210, from Kemper System. This was used to waterproof the concrete deck and provide an ideal base for the inverted roof insulation and green roof elements of the project.

Roof Build Up Cawston Roofing began by applying Kemper System’s EP primer to the substrate to seal the concrete and provide the ideal key for the liquid waterproofing membrane to bond to. Once cured, the installation team then applied the Kemperol V210 resin to the primed substrate, completing the roofs one section at a time. Explains Stuart Hicks from Kemper System: “The Kemperol V210 resin saturates a polyester reinforcement fleece and cures to form a tough and durable, monolithic, seamless membrane with no laminations. It remains permanently flexible to cope with building movement and has a BBA certified service life in excess of 25 years.” Once the roofs had been waterproofed using the Kemperol V210 system, Cawston installed 240mm insulation directly on top followed by a 25ml deep attenuation layer; this enables rainwater to be stored to irrigate the green roof planting while allowing any excess water to drain off the roof. Finally the growing medium was installed along with plug plants to create the finished green roofs. Enquiry No.228. www.mclink.co.uk/790-228

BRONZE

Roofing. Cladding & Insulation 23 Visitors to the newly redeveloped Adelaide Oval one of Australia’s most iconic sports venues - will now be greeted by a dramatic, cantilevered curved form over the main entrance, created from over 4,000 individual panels of Nordic Bronze from Aurubis.

The design is conceived as a series of pavilions in a parkland setting. The two new stands combine concrete structures and tiered-seating, curtain-wall glazing and diagrid PTFE roofs. A copper mesh veil provides shelter and solar shading to facades, and is pierced by a series of solid Nordic Bronze clad volumes, orientated to optimise specific local views. The distinctive form of the William Magarey Room is encased in a double-curved geometry façade of Nordic Bronze panels, inclined in a sectional plane, announcing the main entry point to the south stand below. Each segment exposed to different climatic conditions will generate subtle variations in weathered surface tones over time. The Nordic Bronze skin flows underneath to form a reflective soffit, then into the interior to define the solid mass while blurring inside and outside boundaries. Cladding was installed by Cladding & Roofing Contractors PTY.

Alan Dean, Managing Director of Flowcrete UK, said: “It’s been amazing to work with BAC on this project, as the Mono is an extraordinary product of engineering and it deserves to be showcased in an environment that conveys the quality of the car. “The finished showroom looks fantastic, and the glittering black floor provides a great backdrop for BAC to showcase the car to clients and visitors. “In many ways our decorative floors emulate the ethos of this supercar – as they are both products that simultaneously combine exceptional performance alongside an eye-catching appearance.” The Rustik range of decorative flooring solutions are made from colourful pieces of marble encapsulated in a clear resin, giving an attractive, slip resistant finish that’s durable enough to withstand continuous foot and vehicle traffic without deteriorating. BAC intends to export the Mono overseas, with plans in the pipeline to open showrooms in Scandinavia and Northern Europe. They are singling out the ease and speed of use, but are especially pleased with the amount of adhesive saved when using BAL RapidMat. Shaun Hayes was specific: “We used seven fewer bags of adhesive on 40 m2, compared with using a cavity mat. BAL Rapid-Mat is light in handling and easy to roll out, does not curl up and cutting is much better than others. What a dream and, at only 1mm in thickness, it will help in height issues. Johnstone’s helps Doncaster Racecourse Sparkle The outstanding service provided by Johnstone’s Technical Advisory Department has ensured that a sixweek refurbishment at Doncaster Racecourse was completed in style and on time. The Old Weighing Room restaurant and bar, formerly known as Silks, has undergone an extensive refurbishment ahead of the busy summer season with products from Johnstone’s ensuring both the interior and exterior have a quality finish. From the outset, Johnstone’s worked closely alongside JWH Decorators to develop suitable colour schemes for the project. Remaining faithful to the building’s prominent 1920s architectural features was a vital

consideration so colour experts from Johnstone’s produced realistic photo mock ups to showcase how the schemes would look in situ. In addition to utilising Johnstone’s recommended colour schemes, the four-man team from JWH Decorators took full advantage of the brand’s comprehensive product range. The popular Covaplus Vinyl Matt was used on the ceilings, Acrylic Durable Matt on the walls and the market-leading Aqua Gloss was used on the trim areas. Johnstone’s Smooth Masonry paint was also used to protect the exterior of the building against the elements. Owner of JWH Decorators, Wayne Hargreaves, lives locally to the Racecourse so was determined to

provide it with a finish to be proud of – something he insists that Johnstone’s was integral in helping him and his team achieve. He said: “This project has to rank within my top three ever. It got off to a fantastic start thanks to the outstanding service provided by Donna from the Technical Advisory Department, who took the client’s vision for this project and made it a reality. “There was a real partnership approach to this project, with both Donna and the local Johnstone’s Decorating Centre in Middlebank becoming integral parts of the team. We placed a lot of trust in Johnstone’s and they didn’t disappoint.

delivered a finish that the end client is delighted with. The combination of service and product puts Johnstone’s head and shoulders above the rest and we won’t be using anything else in the future.” Kieran Gallagher, general manager at Doncaster Racecourse, added: “We are delighted with way Wayne and Donna interpreted our brief to redecorate the facility and are extremely pleased with the finished result.” For more information on Johnstone’s comprehensive range of products please visit www.johnstonestrade.com

Anti ligature range

Take a fresh look at panelled doors with

PREMDOR The market for the ubiquitous four – six panel internal door has been consistent over the years and was thought to remain so in the future – until now. The advantages and practicalities that come from a moulded door are visible irrespective of the decorative environment. Now with a collection of exciting new design variants launched by Premdor, the market is experiencing rapid change. Replacing the staid look of the old four panel door, yet retaining the practicalities, is the refreshingly modern look of ladder moulded, vertical five panel, shallow single panel and horizontal four line doors, all of which have met with instant enthusiasm from Merchants, Distributors and House Developers alike. Exclusive to Premdor, the shallow moulded ladder design presents a pleasing modern twist to a traditional panel door and is finished with smooth

surfaces for a paint finish. Additionally the vertical five panel door with its versatile good looks is rapidly becoming one of the UK’s best sellers, again, suitable for painting. Another first from the Premdor design team is the single panel shallow moulded door with understated good looks, ideal for minimalist interiors. Aluminium windows and doors are experiencing a renaissance, according to Reynaers at Home

10,000 in 2013 and is expected to triple again in the next five years – and these are conservative estimates.” There are hundreds of finishes available for aluminium frames in all sorts of colours – some customers even choose to have a different colour inside and out. Modern finishes are so robust that they require minimal maintenance and never need repainting. What’s more, aluminium is three times lighter than steel and two and a half times stronger than uPVC, as well as being an abundant material that is 100% recyclable without any loss of quality. Hugh Moss said: “With these benefits it’s little wonder that aluminium is the material of choice for a growing number of architects and home owners alike."

Aluminium frame systems are experiencing a boom in sales as a result of high performance without any compromise on aesthetics, according to Reynaers at Home Head Hugh Moss. Architects have long-recognised that aluminium is a very stable material that minimises expansion and contraction with changes in the ambient temperature. Hugh Moss said: “This makes aluminium an ideal choice for sliding patio doors and bi-fold doors,

where uPVC and timber tend to warp and twist, making the doors hard to open and close. Aluminium is inherently strong, which also means that architects can design really big windows and doors without having to worry about a bulky frame to provide support. “Not only are aluminium frames typically narrower than uPVC or timber alternatives, but the windows and doors can also be made much bigger too. This maximises the glass area and gives the best possible view. According to our

latest architects’ survey, 40% of respondents said that big windows was the main architectural feature that can really make a home come to life and aluminium can help to make that happen much more easily than other materials.”

Reynaers at Home is a premium brand dedicated to offering the very best architectural glazing products and service to the discerning householder.

Clarke, group marketing manager, said: “The whole point of fuel cards is to save money and we can almost certainly beat any fuel card deal that a fleet already has. Some firms are missing out, though, by not looking beyond the cost per litre.” He pointed out that companies can be vulnerable to hidden costs, with some suppliers levying network fees and transaction charges. Steve Clarke said: “If one fuel card appears to offer a 0.2p per litre better saving than another fuel card, that would seem to mean a 10p advantage gain when pumping 50 litres. THE FUELCARD PEOPLE

The one of a kind system, revealed in the Energy Saving Home exhibit, is MCS Accredited and can be attached to a roof or placed in a garden and uses solar energy, collected through its panels, to heat domestic water. The state of the art ‘panel’ incorporates a 150l water tank actually contained within its unit as well as an absorber and pump-circulated system. By using a PV-driven circulating pump the fully autonomous system doesn’t require any other external power source. As the first system of its kind on the market, this CEN Solar Keymark Certified ALL-IN-ONE Solar System can boast savings of up to 65% for energy

used to heat water in the home and is a qualifying product to receive payment under the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive scheme (RHI). In addition, the panel features an elegant design displaying no visible tank and easy assembly that only requires a water inlet and outlet to be connected - truly leading the way in affordable solar solutions for the home. Neil Morton, Technical and Strategic Manager at GTi, said: “GTi is proud to launch the ALL-IN-ONE Solar System as the first product like this anywhere on the UK market. By having the water tank actually built-into the panel the unit is completely self-contained and is as simple to connect to a water inlet as a domestic dishwasher. This product is truly revolutionary: not only is it hassle free but it’s finally an affordable solar solution for the family home meaning that some of those who need to save the most now really can.”
