14 COMAR 5P.I ADVANCED WINDOW SYSTEM Using latest thermal break technology to produce windows for the next generation of solutions Integration is the key factor which underpins the latest new product launch from Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems. Their market leading Comar 9P.i Framing system offers fast-track semi unitised construction for floor to ceiling glazing, allowing tilt/turn or casement windows to hang direct from the Comar 9P.i Frame as well as rebated doors. With the addition of thermal foam and triple glazing Comar 9P.i offers U-values down to 0.77, creating a future proof solution for their architectural, contractor and fabricator partners. Comar announce they have incorporated the technology from their Comar 9P.i system into the Comar 5P.i window range, and are now launching the Comar 5P.i Advanced Casement and Tilt/Turn window system which integrates seamlessly into Comar 9P.i creating the option for standalone high performance windows. The brief to Comar’s Design Team was to specifically meet architectural demands; low U-values, matching slim sight lines for both the casement and tilt/turn, large glazing pocket for acoustic glass, secured by design and large sizes. For their contractor and fabricator partners, performance with built in fast-track fabrication and installation.

04 FOCUS ON : PUBLIC SECTOR : REHAU LTD

The innovative REHAU Polytec 50 composite curtain walling system is an integral part of the design scheme at the new £30m St Mary’s Student Village built at Bangor University in North Wales. The architects on the project were FaulknerBrowns and the project leaders were Cityheart Ltd.

REHAU POLYEC 50S CURTAIN WALLING IN STYLISH UNIVERSITY PROJECT Twenty three REHAU Polytec 50 screens, at heights of up to 11.3m, have been installed in new student accommodation blocks by specialist fabricators Per-Fit Windows, based in Heywood. Per-Fit worked alongside main contractors Vinci Construction on the project, which also involved the sympathetic refurbishment of the existing quadrangle and ‘1906’ buildings to create a new village square environment for the 600 or so students living at the site. Per-Fit were awarded the contract based on their previous experience on similar large scale commercial projects, and worked closely with both REHAU and Vinci

to put together a detailed fenestration specification which met the cost, efficiency and security criteria of the university. REHAU Polytec 50, recently successfully tested to CWCT standards for performance, was preferred to aluminium curtain walling primarily because it was more cost effective, with no compromise on the aesthetics of the finished buildings, but also because it offered better thermal performance and, with a PVC internal face, was warmer to the touch for students. The twenty three separate screens are up to 4.1m wide and 11.3m high and are all double glazed, achieving a U-Value of 1.54W/m²K. (REHAU Polytec has been Passivhaus certified by the Passivhaus Institute and can achieve a Ucw rating of <0.8 W/m²K.) Many have been installed in stairwells and entrances and these incorporate aluminium entrance doors complete with electronic entry systems. They have been coloured in a smooth anthracite grey on the exterior and are white on the interior. As well as the

curtain walling, Per-Fit also fabricated and installed more than 1100 windows for St Mary’s Village in the REHAU TOTAL70 PVCU system with 6mm toughened Coolite ST150 glazing, providing a g-value of just 0.41. These were used throughout the original buildings as well as on the new build blocks, giving the development a coherent overall look and successfully helping to blend the old with the new. Secured by Design principles were also followed throughout. REHAU demonstrated its #knowhau commercial support service on the project, helping Per-Fit from the outset with factory and on-site training sessions, strength and performance calculations and a CAD drawing service. Per-Fit themselves were congratulated by Vinci at the end of the project on the way they had managed the 12 month programme, bringing it in on time even in the face of many early delays and lots of accessibility constraints for their installation team. A QUALITY BUILDING, DELIVERED ON TIME AND ON BUDGET John Taylor High School has been an Ofsted rated ‘outstanding’ school for many years, so when a number of housing developments began appearing nearby, they knew they could expect an increase in pupil numbers. However, as the school is already oversubscribed, they knew they would need some new facilities quickly to cope with the upcoming demand. They wanted to expand their facilities with a brand new two storey block containing four classrooms. “We used a competitive tendering process,” commented Barbara Mahoney, School Business Director “Wernick Buildings was awarded the project on cost, quality and deliverability, and we were really happy to work with them for a second time.” The school had previous experience working with Wernick Buildings in the form of a six classroom single storey block. Barbara told us “Wernick has a solid reputation and as a long established company, we knew they would be able to ensure this second project was completed to a high standard.” From manufacture to completion, the project took just 14 weeks, with most of the work on site completed during the summer closure period. Demolition works were needed to remove an existing garage and workshop. Despite this, the school suffered minimal disruption to its normal operations. “When the hoarding came down, it felt like the building had always been there,” commented Assistant Principal Graham Howell.

The block is fitted with climate control and fire and security systems, and the classrooms feature projectors and innovative ‘iWalls’. The external finish is a modern looking combination of wood cladding and render, completed with a brick skirt. The building is situated close to the school sports hall and therefore, convenient for the PE theory lessons that will take place in two of the classrooms, with the other two used as general teaching spaces. “We received a quality building that was delivered on time and on budget.” Barbara told us. “You can’t really ask for more than that.”

RIDI REFIT HELPS TO SLASH ANTI-BACTERIAL SHEET RANGE EXCLUSIVELY FROM INTASTOP CARBON EMISSIONS

Celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, the University of Greenwich is one of London’s leading universities. Thousands of new RIDI LED luminaires including ARKTIK ME, WL and F-LINE fittings have been installed at the university as part of a massive lighting overhaul, dramatically cutting carbon emissions, and improving the building environment. High efficiency and reliability were the top priorities for lighting at the university. The existing lighting was more than 20 years old, and had become inefficient and outdated. Following a study of four manufacturers, RIDI was chosen for its ability to offer LED products throughout its range, and its quality and pricing. The low maintenance of the luminaires was also of importance, particularly in cases where there were high ceilings with difficult access. RIDI

Anti-bacterial wall and door protection is essential in the prevention of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) and has been proven to prevent the growth of up to 99% of harmful microbes and bacteria. Intastop is the UK’s exclusive supplier of Hygienilac® antibacterial sheet. Steve Woodhead Sales Director for Intastop commented: “Doors and walls are not only costly when it comes to repairs or maintenance but they can harbour a myriad of infectious microbes. That’s why many healthcare and public facilities opt for protection with an antibacterial sheet which supports their bid to win the war on HAIs. “Our established range of antibacterial and antimicrobial wall and door protection, incorporating the Hygienilac® proactive ingredient, is synonymous with quality and has led to other suppliers in the industry sourcing own branded products from us.” INTASTOP

ELDERLY RESIDENTS ENJOY LOW COST RELIABLE HEATING FROM IDEAL COMMERCIAL BOILERS Four Ideal Commercial Evomax 80kW wall hung condensing boilers, Frame & Header Kits and brand new Plume Kits have delivered time, space and cost savings for New Forest District Council after being installed at Marryat Court Older Persons Living Accommodation in New Milton, Hampshire. As well as delivering reliable, efficient heating and hot water to thirty-four individual flats, the council has estimated that this refurbishment project will save them up to 25% per year in fuel costs. Marryat Court is one of New Forest District Council’s sixteen Older Persons Living Accommodation buildings. The plant room retrofit was arranged as the existing floor standing boilers had become very costly to run, operating at around 80% efficiency, and the council did not wish to risk the health or comfort of the residents should an emergency boiler retrofit project be required during the cold winter months. HAURATON DRAINAGE AT HESLINGTON EAST CAMPUS, UNIVERSITY OF YORK

With the Heslington East Campus site being quite flat, deep drains were not possible so rainwater from roofs, road and pathways had to be directed in a series of culverts, surface drainage channels and rills, eventually discharging into a lake. The Sustainable Urban Drainage Scheme included the control of rainwater from roofs via downpipes into a series of buried, stepped shallow culverts made from two sizes of FASERFIX® SUPER channel fitted with solid ductile iron covers. Surface water drainage with ductile iron gratings were provided in the same channel runs where channels crossed paved footpaths or asphalted areas. Pairs of FASERFIX® SUPER 300 channels fitted with solid covers were also installed adjacent to each other in the

rills to create tunnels under roadways and paths. RECYFIX® SLOTTED channels with their unobtrusive galvanised slot inlets were specified for the pedestrian routes and concourses. Colin Taff, Hauraton‘s Project Engineer comments about the project, “Over 1600 metres of Hauraton drainage channel have been installed by Howard Civil Engineering Limited with no breakages reported during the installation stages”.

A UK FIRST AT BORDERS COLLEGE WITH THE HELP OF FLEXALEN PIPE WORK The UK's first waste water heat recovery scheme has been installed at Borders College in Galashiels, using Flexalen preinsulated pipe work from Flexenergy. The previous system at the college was a gas fired boiler system, but the college was looking to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% by the end of 2015. A renewable heating system from SHARC Energy Systems was their preferred option by some distance and, following installation, the college is now on target to have a total carbon reduction of 35%. The new system required 500 metres of Flexalen heat network piping from a newly-built energy centre to service five Enquiry No.205 www.mclink.co.uk/906-205

individual plant rooms across the site. The energy centre therefore housed the SHARC filtration skid, heat pumps and the control panel. A sewer interface to Scottish Water's existing sewer pipe was also installed along with two underground chambers. "Flexenergy's locality to the project, pricing of the pipe work and the heat loss eďŹƒciencies of the pre-insulated Flexalen piping were all important considerations when choosing the best pipe work for this project", explains Nathan Burton, Project Manager at SHARC Energy Systems.â€?

SPACE FLEXIBILITY IS KEY TO FUTURE OFFICE DESIGN

2016 is predicted to continue 2015’s trend for high quality refurbishment projects in the office sector due to the continued shortage of new build office space on the market. Space-pod, a leading office design agency, is recommending that utilising space differently is essential to re-work offices to suit current and future needs. Recently space-pod increased the capacity of a clients’ office to enable them to employ 380 additional staff and create over 650 further meeting spaces without the need to move to larger premises. “We cannot predict that office needs will not change for the next 10 years. Quite the opposite, we are now certain that they will. Therefore space needs to be flexible and the key to future proofing is intelligent, creative planning,” says Kevin Parker, CEO, space-pod. To complement the displays, the architects chose to specify the Kalwall translucent system for the elevation and for use on the main entrance canopy. This stunning backdrop, supplied and installed by Structura UK, helps to diffuse natural daylight deep into the interior thereby creating a well-lit and aesthetically pleasing ambience. At night, the elevation emits an ethereal and attractive exterior glow. Unlike conventional glazing, Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is flooded with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. Kalwall is distributed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by Structura UK, a leading supplier, fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling, rainscreens, glass atria, windows and other architectural glass building products. The company has had all three of its ISO certifications successfully renewed for three years: OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification and ISO 9001 Quality Management certification.

SE CONTROLS’ SMOKE AND NATURAL VENTILATION SOLUTIONS FOR NEW AGRIVAAL BUILDING The new energy efficient Agrivaal building in Pretoria’s Tshwane Central Business District is using advanced natural ventilation and smoke control solutions from SE Controls to maintain a comfortable indoor environment while improving safety by ensuring escape routes are smoke free in the event of a fire. Designed by PKA Architects for the National Department of Public Works (DPW), the new 10-storey office block integrates with the original 75 year old Agrivaal building, a site of national heritage importance, with the final structure providing 21,650 square metres of rentable space, as well as a restaurant, coffee shops and 545 underground car parking spaces. The new building incorporates a range of energy saving technologies as part of its design and construction, including recycled materials, water harvesting, energy efficient lighting and the use of natural ventilation, which enabled it to achieve a prestigious 4 Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa. SE Controls Africa, based in Durban, worked closely with the project’s fire and engineering consultants WSP Consulting Engineers from the initial concept stage, as well as ventilation

contractors, Robertson Ventilation Industries, to develop the combined high level smoke and natural ventilation solution for the building. The system incorporates an NVLogiQ carbon dioxide sensor and environmental monitor for natural ventilation, as well as a SHEVTEC smoke control panel and 10 SECO N 24 40 chain actuators, which automatically open and close the centre pivot windows in the atrium to vent stale air or smoke from the building. In normal operation, NVLogiQ sensor monitors the temperature, carbon dioxide levels and relative humidity and signals the actuators to incrementally open or close the windows, if the parameters go beyond preset points. In the event of a fire, the SHEVTEC control panel takes a signal from the building’s fire and smoke alarm system, which overrides the natural ventilation system and triggers the actuators to fully open the window to vent smoke from the building. ISO-BLOCO WIN2WALL OFFERS GREAT PERFORMANCE AND LOW COST FOR UK INSTALLATIONS Window installers can now take advantage of the new ISOBLOCO WIN2WALL multi-level sealing tape from ISO-Chemie, which combines excellent performance with competitive cost and is specifically designed for sealing the perimeter joint between windows, doors and walls in the UK. Not only does ISO-BLOCO WIN2WALL enable windows and doors to be quickly and easily sealed from inside the building, the product will seal gaps from 2 mm to 8 mm, which will accommodate the vast majority of UK window installations, and will come in 2 widths to give the extra thermal insulation equivalent to A Rated (40mm tape) or A+ and A++ windows (65 mm tape). Among the key advantages of WIN2WALL are not only its thermal performance, but it is also weather tight to 600 Pa (Violent Storm Force 11) and has excellent acoustic insulation properties. Installing a window or door using WIN2WALL will give the window an equivalent or better thermal property than the window unit itself. Even the smaller 40mm size tape will give the joint between the window and wall a U-Value of 1.2, equivalent to an Energy A-rated window. ISO-CHEMIE Enquiry No.411. www.mclink.co.uk/906-411

SHINING EXAMPLE Commercial space ventilation can become an interior design statement through technological developments at Gilberts (Blackpool) Ltd. The company, Britain’s leading air movement specialist, now has the ability to supply any of its aluminium grilles and diffusers in a chrome powder coat finish. The process gives a deep lustre and shine to the units, yet enables the grille or diffuser to be simply wiped clean with a damp cloth. Unlike conventional chroming, there is no risk of tarnishing, corrosion marks or pits, nor having to polish back to a shine if dirty or greasy. “Like most companies with powder coating facilities, we can already offer a full range of RAL solid colours,” elaborates Gilberts’ sales director Ian Rogers. “Few can offer a true, quality metal finish: historically, even if offered, this has been achieved by foiling, which can be difficult to apply through all planes, and get scratched or damaged. “Because we provide the whole process in-house, from initial grille or diffuser manufacture through to coating, we have complete control over the quality, every step of the way.” GILBERTS (BLACKPOOL) LTD Enquiry No.419. www.mclink.co.uk/906-419

JOHNSON & STARLEY'S WARM AIR HEATING AND VENTILATION SOLUTION FOR HISTORIC APARTMENT RENOVATION Johnson & Starley's WarmCair warm air heating, Aquastar hot water storage and Home 'n Dry ventilation technology have been combined to maximum effect in a spectacularly renovated historic apartment in Penarth. Brian and Marilyn Fisher selected Johnson & Starley products on professional recommendation and are delighted with the results. Albert Road Wesleyan Methodist Church, Penarth, was built in 1907 and its schoolroom was destroyed by bombing in World War Two. The church was later converted into a multi-purpose building, still including a place of worship, but with most of it given over to local community services. Since being used as a community centre it had fallen into disrepair and in 2012 it was converted into eight luxury apartments, including two spacious duplexes. They were all designed to utilise as effectively as possible all the available space afforded by the original large church with its vaulted ceiling. Renovation features include attic style storage space and glass walled decks for split level loft style accommodation, whilst much of the original church's heritage, original design and architectural features have also been retained. These include the original rafters and coving, along with the bell tower – now a wine cellar with roof top terrace. Brian and Marilyn Fisher's open plan apartment features living room, kitchen and two bedrooms on an upper level of the renovated church with a dressing room and airing cupboard - later transformed to house the new Johnson & Starley Warmcair heater and Aquastar water storage cylinder - leading off a mezzanine floor. Originally, electric underfloor heating had been installed to heat the apartment, but it had soon become apparent that this was inadequate to provide sufficient heating for the living space with its very high ceilings. Fuel bills were ranging from £600-£700 a month, yet even with the addition of portable calor gas and electric fan heaters, the desired warmth levels were still not being achieved. Looking for an alternative more effective and more energy efficient approach, a British Gas engineer suggested to the Fishers that a Johnson & Starley warm air heating system with provision of domestic hot water could prove a solution. Following a site visit and professional advice from Independent Heating System Designer Barry Williamson, a specification for a heating system, including detailed heat loss calculations, was drawn up. The solution was based on the installation of a Johnson & Starley WarmCair C20DW high efficiency combined warm air condensing heater with domestic hot water. To maintain the highly attractive look of the apartment, ducting was concealed around the apartment behind the ceiling in the bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms and en-suite, with discreet outlet grills in each room and two at floor level in the main living area. Extract vents remove the warm air that has risen to the wood panelled ceiling level and duct it back down to ground level for energy saving recirculation. The thermostat is in the main living room, in the centre of the wall below the balcony, so that the temperature reading gives a more accurate figure of room temperature. Although the underfloor heating has been retained, it is no longer required. Only the fully Building Regulations Part L compliant, the WarmCair C20DW is now used. It has the added advantage of domestic hot water provision rather than having to rely upon a standard tank with an immersion heater. With a thermal efficiency up to 98% and its 20kW output, the WarmCair C20DW is ideal for the size of the apartment and fulfils all of Mr & Mrs Fisher's requirements.

For more information contact Johnson & Starley Tel: 01604 762881 Web: www.johnsonandstarley.co.uk Enquiry No.220. www.mclink.co.uk/906-220

For extra energy efficiency it is fully modulating and includes a condensate pump as standard as well as the Cleanflow electronic air filtration option. “The WarmCair is a new generation of warm air heating, ideal for this type of heritage project. It performs at least as well as a modern gas fired wet heating system, but without the unsightly clutter of radiators. Furthermore with warm air heating there is no heat loss compared with that which is encountered when hot water is circulated through radiators to heat the house,” says Barry Williamson.

20 FOCUS ON : DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT : YEOMAN RAINGUARD

Yeoman Rainguard’s XL Aluminium Rainwater System was chosen to add the finishing touch to an £11 million property in the desirable area of Virginia Water.

DESIRABLE RAINWATER SYSTEM FOR DESIRABLE RESIDENCE Built by development company Watersmead Homes who pride themselves in building properties of quality and style that exceed expectations, the Georgian style home covers approximately 12,000 square feet over 4 floors. Constructed out of Cotswold Stone, Watersmead ensured that the property combines practicality with style meeting the high standards and demands of the discerning purchaser.

Meeting such standards required the use of high quality building materials and systems which included choosing the right rainwater system. “We obviously needed gutters and downpipes which not only matched the style of the house but were of a quality which would give the homeowner many years of maintenance free service whilst retaining its colour and style well into the future. Yeoman Rainguard’s stylish XL Aluminium rainwater system fitted the bill.”

Explained Mrs Gill Burns of Watersmead Homes. 150 x 100mm MOG XL Aluminium gutters were installed along with a 75 x 75mm square downpipe with the stylish look being completed with Cast Aluminium Plain Hoppers. Finished in a durable black textured powder coating which eliminates colour bleaching and ensures a life expectancy of the rainwater system to that of 25 years and more. “The rainwater systems look perfect on the finished property and we are very pleased with the quality of products and service that Yeoman Rainguard gave us.” Concluded Mrs Burns. GEOSMART LAUNCHES A UNIQUE RANGE OF SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE REPORTS FOR PROPERTY PROFESSIONALS

· SuDSmart Standard reveals areas of suitability for infiltration of surface water into a sustainable system. · SuDSmart Plus adds run-off volumes and flows to inform an initial SuDS design strategy as part of initial discussions with the planning authority. · SuDSmart Pro adds preliminary design options and an outline SuDS strategy The reports provide an ideal fit to the project workflow, supporting pre-application discussions on site suitability and complying with guidance from LASSO (Local Authority Suds Officers Organisation):

Innovative data reports support appropriate and compliant development against flood risk Understanding how a site will respond to surface water flooding and drainage is now a key factor for Local Authorities in consideration of planning submissions for property development. From 6th April 2015, guidance from DEFRA states that Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are required for all new major developments in England, unless it can be proved they are inappropriate. The National Planning Policy Framework states that all new developments in areas at risk of flooding should give priority to the use of SuDS. Architects, planning consultants and developers

must consider the site at the initial master planning stage to identify drainage options and risks. In response, GeoSmart has launched SuDSmart – a first in the market for property professionals. Built upon GeoSmart’s rich heritage of hydrogeological modelling from its sister company ESI, SuDSmart helps architects, planning consultants and developers assess which drainage options are available for a site in order to comply. Built on the National GeoSmart SD50 SuDS Infiltration Map, property professionals can identify where they can comply with Local Authority sustainable drainage requirements and factor in both land and design costs in the project as a result. The SuDSmart report range offers Standard, Plus and Pro options:

“It is highly recommended that pre-application discussions take place before submitting an application to the local planning authority. Ideally, these discussions should start at the land acquisition due diligence stage and continue as part of the pre-planning application process.” SuDSmart reports deliver concise and conclusive site information, with an easy to read “traffic light” risk rating format. Clear recommendations are given on site suitability for infiltration of surface water. GeoSmart’s experienced hydrogeologists have excellent relationships with Local Authorities and regulators and will apply this insight to detailed site appraisal and design options to support compliance and assist in the application process. POLYPIPE PROVIDES PERFECT ATTENUATION SOLUTION FOR NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENT which does not require welding, helping to save time during the installation. Manufactured in Polypipe’s in-house specialist facility, the Ridgistorm-XL system was delivered to site in readyto-install modular units, allow for easy handling, whilst reducing the need for heavy plant and minimising time and installation cost.

Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of engineered sustainable drainage solutions, has seen its popular Ridgistorm-XL large diameter piping system installed as part of a water management attenuation solution for residential developers Kensington Developments. Situated in the village of Marton, near Blackpool, the Magnolia Point development consists of 45 detached and 38 semi-detached three and four bedroom new family homes. Due to the layout of the site, there was a limited public open space available to install a suitable attenuation system capable of storing the required stormwater for the development. Polypipe was approached to review the initial site drainage plan and worked alongside Consultant Engineer, Elluc Projects Ltd to design an alternative solution to meet the needs of both a 1 in 30 and 1 in 100 year storm events under Section 104 agreement. The selected system was required to fit within an area of 1.25km² and store 680m3 of stormwater. In

order to meet these requirements Elluc Projects Ltd specified an attenuation tank formed of 482m of Ridgistorm-XL 1200mm diameter SN2 pipe and fittings. Polypipe was able to take into account the site conditions in order to engineer the Ridgistorm-XL system to exact structural calculations. These calculations ensured that the Ridgistorm-XL system was designed to accommodate vehicles onsite, both during the backfilling and post installation. The modularised system boasted 17 pipe runs as well as 20 prefabricated fittings, including 17 1200mm 90 degree bends, C and F sections, as well as 3 1800mm RIDGISTORMAccess Manholes. The system was connected together with sealing rings, the simplest jointing method

Richard Fox, Quantity Surveyor at Kensington Developments, said: “It was of paramount importance that the attenuation system used could be designed to fit into our limited available footprint. Polypipe’s prefabrication facilities meant that the system was designed and delivered to fit. The pre-fabricated fittings also assisted for a speedier installation, and reduced health and safety risks on site.” Vikki Woodhouse, WMS Residential Manager at Polypipe Civils, said: “We have vast experience in providing water management solutions. The Ridgistorm-XL attenuation tank needed to be designed to fit within the limited space available and so Polypipe’s technical experts were onhand to advise on the design from the beginning of the project. We were given a very unique project and designed a fully engineered system, taking all of Kensington Development’s requirements into consideration providing expert stormwater for the site.” The installation of the Ridgistorm-XL attenuation system was completed in September 2015. and the longevity it offers with a BBA-accredited 25 year service life. The contractor also selected Kemperol 2K-PUR for its compatibility with the zinc primer used to prepare the cast iron substrate and ease of application to the vertical surfaces. For the tower platforms, Rateavon selected Kemper System’s Kemperol V210, carrying out the refurbishment as an overlay of the existing mastic asphalt substrate. Used for maintenance access, the platforms sit above the towers’ electrical infrastructure, so ensuring a durable and leak-free surface is critical.

KEMPER'S TOWERING ACHIEVEMENT AT CLIFTON SUSPENSION BRIDGE Kemper System’s Kemperol cold liquid applied waterproofing membranes have played a vital role in protecting the iconic towers of the Grade I listed Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol as part of a refurbishment project. The scheme involved repointing and restoration of the sandstone structures, along with cathodic protection for the Bath Stone pillars and painting of the bridge chains.

Specialist contractor, Rateavon Ltd, was appointed to waterproof the towers’ platforms and refurbish the gutters for each tower, selecting Kemperol 2K-PUR and V210 to carry out the work. Rateavon began by removing the existing bitumen coating from the towers’ cast iron gutters, using Kemper System’s solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR to replace it. There are limited falls to the gutters which are prone to standing water so the Kemperol system was chosen for its durability in these conditions

Rateavon raised the cable trays on each section of the platforms to enable the application of the Kemperol V210 resin. The resin is cold applied, without the fire risk of hot works, in a single wet-on-wet process that ensures complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece; and cures to form a flexible monolithic membrane that is UV stable and bonds directly to the substrate. Comments Tom Smidek from Rateavon: “This project combined the challenges of a listed structure, an exposed installation and working at height; and Kemper System was able to provide a solution to meet all these requirements. The new Kemperol surfaces will provide a long-term waterproofing solution with no risk of uplift and a visual appearance that matches the structures’ original design.” Web: www.kempersystem.co.uk Enquiry No.225. www.mclink.co.uk/906-225

SECRET FIX CEMBONIT CLADDING FOR SUSTAINABLE HOMES Cembonit cladding from Cembrit has successfully created an attractive finish for 6 new multi-use units at a sustainable housing development in Hayes. Kingswood Place is a newly built housing development comprising 43 residential homes and three commercial units. The look of the development was important, and as such, a number of building materials were used for the external envelope, including cladding, bricks, render and glass. The through coloured sand Cembonit cladding complements the other finishes, and provides a subtle, neutral contrast. Installed in a traditional manner, the contractor opted to use wooden frames instead of the more common method of aluminium brackets and rails. The cladding was bonded to the frame, using a primer and activator. CEMBRIT

MANAGE RAINWATER THE ANTHRACITE GREY WAY Freefoam Building Products are delighted to announce the launch of a new range of rainwater products in the contemporary colour Anthracite Grey. With a 45% increase in sales of Anthracite Grey fascia and soffit in 2015 and a growing overall market trend towards grey window frames, doors, fascia and soffit adding an Anthracite Grey Deep gutter range was the next logical step. Freefoam has created a product that allows customers to create a truly co-ordinated roofline with the new rainwater range offering an exact match (Ral No.7016) to the already popular fascia and soffit products. With a 77mm depth and a 116mm width the Deep gutter is designed to manage the increasing levels of rainfall that are being experienced throughout the UK. Available with the full range of matching fittings including Union Bracket, Running Outlet and Hopper and manufactured using co-extruded PVC-U the Freefoam Freeflow range offers a long lasting, leak free, no fade, low maintenance solution all with a ten year guarantee. Co-extruded to reduce leaks Like the existing Freeflow rainwater system Freefoam manufacture the new Anthracite Grey products using the co-extrusion method to create a white interior and darker

exterior colours. This is Freefoam’s innovative solution to the problems associated with rapid heat absorption and expansion of dark coloured gutters, which can cause leaks and noise when they cool down. A white interior reduces heat absorption and subsequent expansion along the width and length dramatically decreasing the probability of leaks. Colour stability built in Freefoam is the colour specialist. The new Anthracite Grey rainwater range is manufactured using Freefoam’s patented ColormaxTM technology - an advanced masterbatching process with a blend of natural PVC and pigments that are simultaneously co-extruded to produce built in colourfastness, colour variety, and reliable colour matching, all with a ten year guarantee. Colin St John, UK General Manager commented “The launch of a new colour in our rainwater range offers architects, specifiers, builders and developers the opportunity to create a perfectly coordinated roofline. We have established ourselves as leaders in the manufacture of colour PVC building products and adding an Anthracite Grey rainwater system to match our fascia and soffit products allows customers to meet the growing market place demands for colour.”

Designed by Arup Group and built by Laing O’Rourke, building envelope specialist Lakesmere Ltd commissioned Structura UK Ltd to install Kalwall translucent cladding to form the link between two buildings. The Kalwall not only diuses attractive natural daylight into the interior but its 0.56 W/m2K U-value optimises thermal performance and prevents solar heat gain. It also helps to obscure vision and retain privacy in some parts of the facility. This use of Kalwall is part of Equinix's commitment to reduce energy consumption and enjoy a smaller carbon footprint than other data facilities of its kind. Unlike conventional glazing, Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the

interior is bathed with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. Apart from being specified for all types of new build project, Kalwall is increasingly used for the refurbishment of cladding or rooflights on aged buildings.

PENDOCK’S COLUMNS TAKE OFF AT THE O2 The Hub, which was formed in 2005 as a Specialist Fit-out Contractor to the Museums & Heritage Sector and has since built an enviable reputation within the industry, has specified decorative column casings from Pendock for its latest project carried out in Greenwich’s most prominent landmark. Virgin Atlantic Airways and Delta Air Lines, the official airline partners of The O2, launched the glamorous NY-LON Lounge Bar during the summer: having the capacity for up to 300 guests within the Turbine Lounge - a large bar and seating area - while an additional “Secret Meeting room” can cater for meetings, private dining or other events in an intimate setting. Designed by the Manchester based consultancy, LOVE, the stunning aviation inspired 6,000-square foot space features two round and two square columns supplied by UK-based specialist, Pendock. The decorative, stainless steel 304 columns feature a mirror finish outer skin, with a 6mm protective acoustic layer. The Pendock range of metal casings is supplied as a complete system: including an integral carrier arrangement, joint infills and mullions. Each floor to ceiling casing produced for the NY-LON Lounge stands 2850mm tall; two with a diameter of 700mm and two 550mm square.

Additionally, Pendock provided all the fixings and fixing cover channels: including top and bottom collars and semi-circular trim sections. The visual impact is very much in keeping with the aviation theme of the new lounge bar, which honours the airlines’ important New York – London route. The luxury, ultra-modern décor is mainly fitted out in warm browns and tans while the columns reflect the muted light and furnishings to great effect, mimicking the curves created in the walls and by the lighting.

NY-LON is being managed on behalf of the two airlines by leading hospitality brand, Levy Restaurants UK, offering a menu highlighting U.S. and British cuisine, as well as aviation themed cocktails. Importantly for the venue’s management, the stainless steel columns should prove hardwearing, being resistant to spillages or other marks and requiring very little maintenance. FORBO MAPS OUT THE FLOOR FOR MANCHESTER SCIENCE PARTNERSHIPS Taking full advantage of Forbo Flooring Systems’ high quality, digital printing capabilities, The Sheila Bird Group has helped Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP) to create the wow factor in the main events and community space in their client’s Greenheys building. A customdesigned A to Z map of Manchester, digitally printed onto Forbo’s durable Eternal vinyl floor covering, has created an eye-catching and engaging focal point in an area that has been specially designed to encourage scientists, innovators, investors and entrepreneurs to socialise and connect with one another. Chris Naughton at The Sheila Bird Group said: “The interior of the Greenheys building has a lot of exposed brick and we wanted to retain the industrial feel of the building within the space, but also to install a completely unique floor covering to inject a stand-out feature in the area. Our custom A to Z map of Manchester pinpoints the various MSP buildings dotted around the city in different colours and visitors to the building are able to immerse themselves into the map and orientate themselves through the city by just looking at the floor covering.”

Forbo’s digitally printed Eternal vinyl offers a new dimension in colour and design and there are no limits to what can be created, with exceptional colour reproduction and clarity. Clients can also be confident that their product retains the full performance specification of the Eternal core collection; durable, high quality and easy to clean and maintain. The Sheila Bird Group installed additional Eternal vinyl floor coverings throughout connecting walkways, selecting the metal grey colourways, Anthracite Concrete and Brushed Chrome to complement the industrialised aesthetics of the building. Incorporating a modern collection of textiles, metals and stones, Forbo’s Eternal presents a far-reaching range of designs to inspire specifiers. In performance terms, Forbo’s vinyl flooring has always been the benchmark in heterogeneous design. Its PUR Pearl finish makes the floor covering easy to clean and its lasting performance guarantees that Eternal will stay in prime condition, even under heavy traffic conditions.

“We’ve used Forbo on many projects as they offer good quality products at a competitive price and have the ability to deliver custom floor coverings – something we definitely desired and attained for this project,” Chris commented. “Indeed, the interior of the building could not have looked this great without Forbo. This project has been very successful and it has led to us developing a great relationship with MSP.” Thomas Renn, Associate Commercial Director at MSP concluded: “Our events space really does have the ‘wow’ factor. It’s the first thing visitors comment on and they love to share pictures of it on social media. The installation of the A to Z map on the floor is a very clever idea – it helps our visitors to locate themselves within Manchester and connects MSP to the rest of the city.” For more information please call Forbo on 0844 822 3928 or visit www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/eternal

REMMERS DELIVER FOOD GRADE FLOORING Hygienic food grade flooring was required to the automated filling and packaging lines at the relocated premises of Nature Delivered (www.graze.com). A number of steel structure mezzanines were constructed to maximize space and house new sorting and packing machinery. Each mezzanine level required a complicated matrix of cross falls within the sub-screed and a hard wearing, hygienic, slip-resistant resin floor finish, with integral perimeter coving. Due to the fast track nature of the build process, an epoxy damp-proof membrane was required

prior to installation of the resin finishes. Remmers Haftfest Polymer was added to the sand/cement screed to improve its performance characteristics, increasing compressive strength and reducing the potential for drying shrinkage cracking. The screed was laid to falls and subsequently primed with 2 coats of Epoxy MT100 damp-proof membrane and topped with a nominal 8mm thick layer of Remmers Crete HF hard wearing polyurethane screed. LAMINATING THE FUTURE Abet Ltd is delighted to announce that it has recently obtained single site certification for the chain-of-custody standards of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®). This follows on from Abet Laminati which was awarded both FSC® and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) in January 2014. As environmental awareness increases, the demand for FSC® Certified Chain of Custody material has increased greatly over recent years and the ability to prove that the material has come from well managed forests is a key factor when specifying timber and paper products Abet has worked with BM Trada, an independent third-party certifier of environmental and sustainability claims to gain FSC Mix® accreditation. FSC® is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation established to promote responsible forest management practices worldwide to meet the social, economic, ecological, cultural and spiritual needs of present and future generations. Here, natural wood Troldtekt panels with a fine structure have been installed throughout the College to ensure good acoustics in the open and high ceilinged rooms while creating a particularly attractive and warm atmosphere. Danish manufactured Troldtekt acoustic tiles are specified throughout the UK and Europe and can be delivered as either FSC or PEFC certified panels. They are manufactured using 100% natural wood fibres and their benefits are high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. They are

used to improve acoustics in many different projects, such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial and public buildings. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left unpainted or painted in virtually any RAL colour. Troldtekt sustainability has also been recognised with certification at Silver level within the Cradle to Cradle concept and earns gold on 4 out of 5 criteria in the Cradle to Cradle certification version 3.1. As part of a major refurbishment of a semi-derelict four-bedroom home and adjoining coach house, Adam and Sarah Johnson saw the opportunity to add an 83m² rear extension that includes a kitchen and open plan living area. To help create the industrial look they wanted they chose steel windows and doors from Steel Window Association Member, Monk Metal Windows. The couple’s architect, Matt Lucas, and their interior designer, Melony Spencer, worked with them to incorporate these and to achieve the appropriate look and proportions for their new home, in conjunction with Monk Metal Windows who produced a detailed working drawing. Monk subsequently manufactured and installed a 3.7m wide by 1.6m high window together with two screens containing windows and doors measuring nearly 3.7m wide and 2.7m and 3.1m high respectively. BURGLARS LOVE WINTER

The Guardian range is Britain’s first range of Up & Over doors that are Secured by Design (SBD) accredited. This is a UK police initiative focussing on crime prevention in homes. The Guardian range has been engineered specifically to offer an extra level of security – without compromising on the design and functionality you would expect from a Garador garage door. The doors have additional back braces on the inside of the door for greater rigidity, as well as improved and reinforced locking systems to prevent an attack on the locking mechanism and a unique anti-snap cylinder with a sacrificial front to prevent entry even after an attack.

Mid winter and long dark nights– no wonder this is the time of year when burglars are especially active.

burglar can often get through to the side or back of the house to gain entry there, out of sight of any passersby.

Garages can be key targets for burglars. Often valuable equipment is stored in garages, plus once inside a garage, a

STRUCTURALLY GLAZED SOLUTION

By Will Jarvis, Technical Director, DR Services

Architects and interior designers, as well as the housebuilders or developers on whose projects they are involved make many judgements based on price, quality and aesthetic taste; though this is only part of the process – as we can understand by looking at the significant differences between swinging and sliding doors. Though the most contrasting characteristic is in the geometry of their motion – one a rotation while the other translates through a single plane – there are various other criteria to be considered. So what will decide the choice between swinging or sliding doors? Certainly for the vast majority of domestic and even commercial situations, a basic swing door will suffice; but dozens of different factors can dictate that some type of sliding door installation may be appropriate or even essential. a big plus for home owners – and the best choice has to be a door from Garador’s specialist Guardian range.

Reynaers at Home’s range of hypoallergenic designer handles – Purity – is proving more popular than ever thanks to stunning aesthetics, durability and innovative material and coating.

Enquiry No.242 www.mclink.co.uk/906-242

REYNAERS AT HOME PRESENTS SUITE OF HYPOALLERGENIC DESIGNER HANDLES: PURITY

For the design and development of Purity, Reynaers at Home joined forces with the Italian designer Leo De Carlo, who worked for Philippe Starck’s agency in Paris for several years. He drew inspiration from his home town of Venice for Purity’s innovative and minimalist design. Leo De Carlo said: “Reynaers is known for its technical competence, attention to detail and environmental awareness. The material used in Purity is a compatible alloy, which doesn’t contain any toxic elements, such as lead, nickel or chrome. What’s more, it is made using a production process that ties into Reynaers’ environmental credentials.” Purity handles are crafted using a recently developed, highly durable alloy called PURA™ and advanced technology makes it possible for it to be protected. The handles are coated using an innovative production process called BIOV™ (Bioecologic Ion Overlay). This is an evolution of the old PVD coating process, which requires no galvanic chrome, doesn’t produce toxic waste and means the designer handles are 100% recyclable. The surface hardness is more than double that of a standard surface treatment and the corrosion resistance is on a par with that of the highest quality stainless steel. Even more impressive is the fact that the coating is hypoallergenic. Available in a range of three striking

standard colours, plus five more available on demand, the Purity handles are suited across a range of Reynaers at Home doors, allowing homeowners to have matching handles on aluminium sliding doors, bifold doors, double doors and single side hung doors. Reynaers at Home is

a premium brand dedicated to offering the very best architectural glazing products and service to the discerning householder. For more information, see the website www.reynaersathome.co.uk. Enquiry No.243 www.mclink.co.uk/906-243

NEW PREMDOR INTERNAL SHAKER OAK DOOR – MODERN BY TRADITION SINCE THE 1930’S

New to the Premdor range is the traditional 1930’s interior Shaker door finished in Oak. Originally developed by the Shaker religious sect, the style enveloped the principals of simplicity, utility and honesty, establishing itself over the ensuing decades as a door solid in construction, whilst maintaining its minimalist design. Since its inception the classic Shaker door has never lost its appeal and in current times has grown in popularity, with Retro trends becoming highly fashionable demonstrated by the growth market for refurbishment projects, protecting a property’s original features. ALLEGION STRIVE TO REDEFINE HOW DOOR HARDWARE IS SOLD Specialist security manufacturer, Allegion, is launching a new programme that will hopefully redefine door hardware sales. Allegion's new first-of-its-kind Try Me Product Programme, gives end users the option to try door closer products on a single door before committing to fitting them throughout their buildings. The Try Me Product Programme is launching especially for the commercial, healthcare and education sectors, where young people and those needing specialised accommodations are more likely to be negatively affected by doors and door sets that have

been incorrectly specified in the past. Paul Barrows, demand creation leader at Allegion UK, commented: "We're always creating and innovating new products, and decided that it's important to reflect this ethos in the way our products are being sold. We knew that problem doors in commercial buildings can be a burden for facilities managers, so we wanted to give them an easy way to fix it.” ALLEGION

Our standard product achieves 1.2 w/m2K on u values, and our standard acoustic reduction value of 37 dBRw. This works well for city developments and helps developers achieve BREEAM SAP assessment. Our top hung fully reversible product is also popular as it is delivered complete with all the safety restrictors built in, and helps developers achieve Lifetime Homes Standards for handle height requirements. We also provided outward opening single and double balcony doorsets.” NorDan was founded in Norway in 1926 by the Rasmussen family. The third generation are at the helm today. ‘ALUPROF LISTENS TO SPECIFIERS’ In all forms of new and refurbished building construction, Specifiers today are seeking to reduce window frame sight lines to increase light transmittance. Aluprof, one of Europe's leading systems companies, have designed a system with the slimmest of sight lines, the new 'MB Slimline' system. With a fixed light and opening light aluminium face width of just 32.5mm Aluprof’s new ‘MB Slimline’ window offers both good looks and high thermal performance something steel window systems cannot offer. U values of below 1.00 are achievable, as the new system will accept both double and triple glazing options coupled with aluminium profiles which use wide polyamide thermal break. With a wide range of profiles available, the ‘MB Slimline’ system can offer high inertia ratings and slim, deep profiles, offering the specifier the ability to use the system in any large, or small, window spaces. Ideally suited to both new and replacement projects, in both residential and commercial environments, where slim lines are crucial to the aesthetic appearance of the building, the ‘MB Slimline’ system offers a complete solution.

TRANSFORMATIONAL PAVING Brownfield includes modernist architect Ernö Goldfinger's listed, 'brutalist' concrete high-rise blocks - including Balfron Tower - from the late 60's and early '70sBefore regeneration, a key issue with the Estate was the variable quality and character of

With the recent completion of public realm regeneration at the east London Brownfield Estate, Interpave has substantially updated its case study on this exemplary project.

the urban realm, which was ill defined with uncertainty about identifying public or private spaces and fronts or backs of buildings. With standard width carriageways, very wide pavements and no defensible space to frontages, the streetscape was bleak. This regeneration project, designed by PRP for Poplar HARCA, works within the general layout of the refurbished and new infill buildings and adopted streets. The aim is to unify disparate elements of the site using a simple palette of hard landscape materials, developing a language that unites the neighbourhood. Wherever possible, multi-use streets and spaces are developed – bold and contemporary in character – using robust and high quality landscape elements. The project is characterised by a uniform application of concrete block paving on un-adopted areas, with feature paving announcing estate entrances and around key buildings. Here, concrete flags in

strong colours are arranged in bands to create a bold linear feel. Then, throughout the scheme silver-grey concrete setts – with enhanced granite surface adding sparkle – highlight footways, while charcoal setts identify private amenity space. Edges and transformations are defined by enhanced-finish concrete kerbs, some laid flush, others raised. This is an exemplary scheme, demonstrating the importance of considered, detailed design and execution in the public realm. Interpave has just published an updated case study exploring the project which, together with other case studies and guidance on various issues, ranging from Sustainability to SuDS, can be downloaded via the Interpave information resource at:

SIOO WOOD PROTECTION - A NEW WOOD MODIFICATION FOR THE UK All too often the appearance of new timber clad buildings is ruined by uneven weathering. It is quite common to see buildings where the shaded areas are still unweathered whereas the exposed areas have already changed to the silvery-grey colour associated with exposed wood. For this reason, pictures of timber clad buildings are always taken immediately after construction and not after a year or two! Aesthetics is hugely important in the built environment and this patchy weathering puts people o from specifying timber as a cladding material. A new product in the UK is the Swedish wood surface modification system, Sioo Wood Protection. This product reacts with the wood to produce a pleasing even grey surface within a few months of application. Very importantly, this accelerated weathering takes place through a chemical reaction of the Sioo system with the top few millimetres of the wood surface and so it is a permanent change. Because thegreying takes place due

to the chemical reaction, a completely even appearance is obtained, since it is not reliant upon exposure to sunlight for the reaction to take place. The Sioo Wood Protection System uses silicate technology in a two part waterbased system. The first stage of the treatment uses a mineral silica solution that is able to penetrate the surface of the wood very eďŹƒciently. After the first treatment stage, a silane-based emulsion is applied, which cures by cross-linking to form a flexible silica network and provides a water-proof barrier preventing leaching of the mineral silicate. Over time, the mineral silicate cures by reacting with atmospheric carbon dioxide to precipitate an insoluble silica network within the wood structure. The product has been used extensively for cladding and decking protection and has also been used to protect the decks of sailing boats. The Sioo system is used as a surface protection system, which is suitable for Use Classes 1, 2, 3.1 and 3.2 according to EN 335 Part 2 (see table). If

additional protection is thought necessary for Use Class 3.2 applications, then the Sioo Wood Protection System can be applied to preservative treated wood and to thermally treated wood. When used in interior applications Sioo Wood has the huge advantage of being VOC-free, since it is water-based and uses silicate technology. Disposal at end of life is not a problem, since the product is non-toxic. Use Classes according to EN 335 Part 2. Use Class

RECTICEL INSULATION HELPS TO STEER THE NHIC The steering group of the NHIC has been enhanced with Recticel Insulation. Leading UK PIR manufacturer Recticel Insulation is adding its voice to a leading organisation in the home renovation industry. The company’s technical specialist Paul Forrester sits on the steering group of the NHIC (National Home Improvement Council) which for more than 40 years has maintained a close liaison with Government, local authorities, housing associations, private householders and landlords as well as product manufacturers and service providers. As the UK suffers the legacy

of Europe’s oldest and least thermally efficient housing stock, the council provides an important source of impartial advice and information on all manner of home improvements – of which insulation is a key consideration. In his NHIC capacity, Paul attends bi-monthly steering group meetings working alongside companies such as British Gas, associations such as the NFRC, and accreditation providers such as NAPIT for building services. ENERGY OPTIMIZATION FOR BUILDING SERVICE PIPEWORK Technical insulation materials made of flexible elastomeric foams (FEF) and polyethylene foams (PEF) are among the few industrial products which actually save more energy during their service life than they require for their manufacture. “As a result, they can help to meet the latest EU energy consumption reduction targets,” explains Dominique Malache, technical expert at CEFEP, the European FEF and PEF interest group. At a local, national and international level, Europe today stands poised to undertake the biggest “energy transition” in more than a

century. With ambitious EU commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40 percent by 2030 and achieve a 27 percent increase in energy saving over the same timeframe, insulation will play an increasingly important role and nowhere will the effects be more felt than in the construction industry. Buildings currently consume around forty percent of all the energy used within Europe. With space heating and cooling accounting for the majority of this the countries of the EU have tightened their demands on the primary energy

requirements of buildings. Increased levels of structural insulation ensure that buildings retain heat more reliably but there has also been a focus on improving the efficiency of heating, cooling and ventilation systems. Insulation materials made of flexible elastomeric foams (FEF) and polyethylene foams (PEF) offer a sustainable way to reduce the energy use of these systems. Study shows positive ecological balance: Industrially manufactured products require raw materials and energy for their production but technical insulation materials are a special case as they save energy over the course of their service life. Studies carried out by member companies of the CEFEP Interest Group have demonstrated that FEF pipe insulation materials have a net positive effect. For example, the insulation manufacturer Armacell carried out an analysis of several products over their complete life cycle (Life Cycle Assessment) in accordance with EN 15804. The results show that FEF insulation materials not only save energy, they continue saving energy throughout the life of the mechanical system. Web: www.cefep.eu / www.dako-pr.de

The refurbishment of a landmark listed property on London’s Leicester Square has seen Marmox Thermoblocks specified in very large quantities for an unusual application. Number 48 Leicester Square is being completely redeveloped behind the retained 1920s stone façade, with Make Architects leading the design team on behalf of client, Linseed Assets, while Pacific Construction is the main contractor. When complete the remodeled property overlooking one of the capital's most famous public realms will offer 186,000 square feet of usable space over seven new floors of offices with retail units at street level.

THERMOBLOCK PREMIERES IN LEICESTER SQUARE PROJECT

There will also be accommodation on a newly created upper storey, behind what Make Architects describe as a fresh interpretation of the traditional mansard roof. Pivotal to this radical reconstruction has been the need to stabilize and

strengthen the outer elevations which had been badly weakened by previous alterations over the past century. With a full facade retention structure in place and the basement area framed by a retaining wall, the project team's solution involved raising an internal inner blockwork wall using aerated concrete. This is intended to improve the thermal performance of the exterior elevations as well as their regularity and soundness, while taking up the minimum interior space. As part of this, the project team elected to make use of the Marmox Thermoblocks as a means of minimizing heat loss at the critical floor wall junction. The 600 mm long insulation units incorporate mini columns of high strength, low conductivity concrete to support the load of the wall above while the low lambda value insulation virtually eliminates the path for cold-bridging. They are laid using normal bricklaying mortar with special Marmox Multibond sealant used to secure and seal the stepped joints while an integral layer of mesh on the upper and lower surfaces offers a good mortar bond for block-laying to continue in the conventional manner. In total over 1000 of the 640X140X65 mm Thermoblocks were supplied by the Islington branch of Travis Perkins, helping create a continuous horizontal thermal break beneath the new wall rising from the basement of 48 Leicester Square: ensuring it will meet the current Building Regulations and that the structure will endure for many decades to come. EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION BY SAINT-GOBAIN WEBER ENHANCES PERFORMANCE OF NEW HERTFORDSHIRE HOSPITAL External Wall Insulation (EWI) by SaintGobain Weber has been used on the new £22million Queen Elizabeth II Hospital recently opened in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire for Assemble Community Partnership Limited. The overall design seeks to respond to the Garden City context through the integration of gardens and buildings with extensive use of timber, render and glass. Internally the exposed concrete structure of the building has temperature regulating properties while the shape and layout of the hospital is designed to create natural

shading. An attractive planted green roof encourages biodiversity. The outside of the building is covered with hand glazed tiles together with areas of render. The use of weber.therm XM external wall insulation meets the sustainability brief by wrapping the structure in thermal insulation to create an attractive, weather resistant outer skin. These high environmental and energy-efficiency standards have achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating. Web: www.netweber.co.uk. Enquiry No.270 www.mclink.co.uk/906-270

With Thermoblock

One of the worst areas of heat loss through a thermal bridge is where the floor meets the wall. Up to 30% of heat, in a well-insulated room, can be lost this way. Thermoblock prevents that heat loss.

MAGGIE’S CANCER CENTRE ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND, UNITED KINGDOM

Centre is the latest such centre to provide emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer.

Unusually shaped, the architecturally stunning Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen in Scotland is designed to assist in the psychological and emotional healing process for those affected by cancer. A Licensed Icynene contractor installed both Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and Icynene H2 Foam LiteTM in the pebble-shaped structure. Situated on the southern boundary of the Foresterhill site of the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen, Scotland, Maggie’s Cancer

Without Thermoblock

The centre, designed to be homely and full of warmth, aims to provide an environment where those facing cancer can gain support. The centre also intends to inspire imagination from visitors and has contributed to the architecture of the Aberdeen city area. The Design: Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, together with Scottish firm, Halliday Fraser Munro, took on the challenge to create a visually stunning structure in the shape of a pebble. The unusually-shaped single storey structure features a reinforced concrete exterior and

timber interior. Steel reinforcements were used to form the structure’s unique shape. With activity and meeting rooms located on the ground floor and office space on the mezzanine, the centre features high-end interior finishes and manages to create a peaceful, welcoming and beautiful space for anyone who visits. Insulating Maggie’s Cancer Centre: A Licensed local Icynene contractor was enlisted by Halliday Fraser Munro to help insulate the centre in February 2013 using two high performance Icynene spray foam insulation products. The spray foam insulation crew used five sets of the 100% water-blown closed cell medium density Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and used seven sets of the open cell Icynene H2Foam LiteTM throughout the curved structure. Spray foam crews applied the medium- density material on the lower part of the structure to a height of 2.5m in an effort to provide additional structural strength. Being 100% water blown, Icynene H2Foam ForteTM has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 1 - the lowest GWP available. In additional to providing structural strength, the closed cell product also can reject bulk water penetrating through the building envelope. Above the 2.5m mark and across the curved roofline Icynene H2Foam LiteTM was applied. Due to the unique curvature of the roofline, crews had to aid the rise of the foam by hand to ensure consistent and even coverage. As a result of using spray

foam insulation throughout the design, an extremely high R-value was achieved. With a high R-value, staff and visitors to Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen will be able to work and heal in comfort all year round regardless of the season.

Both Icynene H2Foam LiteTM and Icynene H2Foam ForteTM contribute to creating a positive, peaceful and comfortable environment for visitors to the new centre in Aberdeen. The Result: Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen was completed and opened in September 2013. The structure, set apart by a small landscaped area, is open to anyone requiring its services and support. The unusual shape and highly visual design has been receiving attention from the architecture community and the greater Aberdeen community. In November 2013, the centre was awarded a Commendation by Aberdeen’s Civic Society and in March 2014, GMS Insulations Ltd, the Icynene distributor in the UK, was awarded the Best Architectural Project – International at the Icynene 2014 Global Conference for their involvement in the project.

46 PRODUCT & BUSINESS NEWS THE POTENTIAL DOWNSIDE OF FALLING FUEL PRICES

Van users should remember that falling fuel prices can bring problems, according to The Fuelcard People. Steve Clarke, group marketing manager, was commenting as the price for Brent crude fell below $40 per barrel for the first time in six years. He said: “We expect continuing global price drops to be reflected at the pumps, with the RAC predicting a sub-£1 litre by Christmas. Any saving soon disappears, though, when drivers go off-route to hunt for bargains. Meanwhile, most of the price is accounted for by taxes and, if you have the wrong fuel card, transaction charges.” He pointed out that a driver going three miles and back to a ‘cheaper’ forecourt, saving 1p per litre, could need to pump 60 litres just to recoup the fuel used for the diversion. “It can become a game between colleagues, he said, with drivers competing to boast of how little they pay to refuel.” THE FUELCARD PEOPLE

Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has demonstrated its superb product and logistical capabilities by supplying a colossal 4,200 tonnes of hard landscaping materials to Swansea Bay Campus, all within a tight time frame of just six months. Charcon consulted with contractor Vinci Construction at an early stage of the project. The architecture of the university buildings already present featured both traditional and modern elements. This was a key driver in the choice of paving products and shades to make sure the landscaping would complement these buildings. Charcon therefore recommended its Andover Textured range for the contemporary public spaces and squares. PROMUSEUM HELPS FRENCH MULTI-MEDIA LIBRARY OPEN A NEW CHAPTER WITH GUARDIAN CLARITY™ ANTI-REFLECTIVE GLASS The Médiathèque Pierre Amalric d’Albi (Albi Médiathèque) houses many rare, valuable and historical books. In early 2015, the library wanted an impressive, seven-meter-long showcase to house the contents of a major new exhibition that was due to open this fall. Albi Médiathèque Director Jocelyne Deschaux found the solution with Guardian Clarity™ glass with help from Promuseum, a supplier specialized in sourcing materials and equipment for museums, public spaces and cultural sites. With more than 25 years of experience, Promuseum, based in Rosny-sur-Seine, France, is a global designer of museum showcases that enhance, as well as protect and conserve, precious collections. “Guardian Clarity anti-relfective glass met the museum’s three conditions for the showcase: preservation, aesthetics and value for money,” said Mrs. Deschaux.

When she arrived at Albi Médiathèque over two years ago, Mrs. Deschaux noticed that the library’s showcases were in dire need of upgrading. They were made of different materials – wood, aluminium or glass – and were not suitable for preservation of the rare books. “They were not adequate for these historic collections,” she said. Mrs. Deschaux connected with Promuseum to discuss the project. “I wanted an airtight showcase with laminated and anti-glare glass that complies with AFNOR standards to exhibit illustrations and photographic collections,” she explained. products but also to meet the people that are selling them. We don’t just buy products; we seek trading partners – companies that we can grow with.” Ian said that he missed the first FIT Show in 2013, but was impressed with the second event in 2014, which he attended with an open mind. While he didn’t have a written plan, he had mentally noted a number of companies that he wanted to see, including Northern Ireland based door and window manufacturer Apeer.

Fuel Card Services has enhanced its attractive employee benefits by adding the Perkbox programme. Its people already enjoy rest area televisions, fresh fruit baskets, massage chairs and an extra ‘birthday’ day off. The new engagement programme brings further rewards and incentives to 300 personnel across all five Fuel Card Services offices. ASSA ABLOY UK SPECIFICATION MAKES ITS PREDICTIONS FOR 2016 After a successful inaugural year, ASSA ABLOY UK Specification looks ahead to 2016 and how it believes the construction industry will respond following a year of mixed fortunes. Despite the dip in the latter part of 2015, latest forecasts from the Construction Products Association (CPA) predict that construction output is expected to rise by 19.7% between 2015 and 2019, with 2016 enjoying a 3.8% increase. As expected growth in private housing, commercial, mainly driven by new office developments and infrastructure will fuel this upward trend. However, it’s not all doom and gloom for the public sector either, despite a government focus on austerity, both education and health are expected to see healthy increases by 2019, 22.3% and 12.8% respectively. This is in part thanks to capital raised by private projects under PF2, so whilst new builds are unlikely to be hit by austerity cuts, the industry should brace itself for falls in maintenance and refurbishment programmes. The recently-introduced Celsius Solid Roof system from Synseal is now fully approved and registered by the LABSS (Local Authority Building Standards Scotland) as checked for compliance with Scottish Building Regulations under certificate number EWS550. Construction of a completely new solid roof or replacement of an existing conservatory roof with a retrofit solid roof involves a statutory obligation to submit a Building Regulations application. The

scope of Synseal’s updated certificate number EWS550 now covers England, Wales and Scotland to facilitate mandatory legal technical compliance procedures for site locations in all three countries.

“The market opportunity for retro-fitting existing tired old conservatories is significant and our fast-fitting Celsius Solid Roof has a traditional all-timber core construction to provide a truly warm yet relatively lightweight structure that will not unduly stress existing conservatory window walling structures and foundations,” comments Synseal’s Head of Marketing, Mark Schlotel. “Celsius Solid Roof has been carefully designed to avoid excessive loadings and weighs the equivalent of our popular Global or K2 aluminium/PVC-U conservatory roofs glazed with toughened roof glass.”

The thermal performance specification to meet Scottish Building Regulations is more demanding and the required Uvalue of 0.15W/m2K (calculated to BS EN ISO 6946:2007) is achieved by supplementing Celsius Solid Roof’s standard Envirotile, breathable membrane and 142mm Kingspan TEK structural insulated panel roof assembly with a Kooltherm K18 insulated dry lining plasterboard internal finish to provide an additional non-bridged layer which is Enquiry No.274. www.mclink.co.uk/906-274 42.5mm overall in element thickness.
