LORD NORMAN FOSTER COMMISSIONS LOCAL MODELMAKING STUDENTS TO RECREATE ORIGINAL REICHSTAG MODEL Students at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) have been working hard to recreate the original model of one of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks, following a commission from Lord Norman Foster.

Spectral Lighting has provided a modern, noise suppressing lighting installation for the refurbished University of Bristol Geography study centre to bring a contemporary feel to a classic Victorian building. Andy Philips of the University of Bristol said: “We wanted to create a better working environment for the students by reducing noise, providing a better quality of light and keeping the natural light coming in from the windows, but we also wanted to reduce our energy bills. We worked together with Spectral to come up with an integrated solution that would do both and we are delighted with results. We also wanted a modern contemporary look to the space.” RIDI LIGHTING

Seven Second Year students on AUB’s BA (Hons) Modelmaking course were tasked by Lord Foster to build a replica of the orginal model of the Reichstag dome for The Norman Foster Foundation. The dome was designed by Lord Foster in 1993 to symbolise the reunification of Germany and the original model was lost. Lord Foster visited the AUB campus earlier this week to take a look at the models and to give a lecture to BA (Hons) Modelmaking, Architecture, and Interior Architecture and Design students. The students have also been recreating models of Lord Foster’s early designs from the 1960s, using original tools and techniques. One of the

students, Tom Oliver, said: “Recreating the Reichstag model has been fantastic. It’s our first experience of working to such a prestigious deadline and managing a big team project. We haven’t built anything on this scale before.” Paul Johnson, Course Leader for Modelmaking at AUB said: “AUB has been collaborating with Foster + Partners for 20 years now. They are strong advocates of the use of models in their work and have the biggest model shops in London. They have a great demand for architectural models and our relationship has really grown out of that. We are one of the few courses in the UK able to deliver a commission like this. “Foster + Partners offer work experience opportunities to our students and most of them spend time there learning from the team. They also sponsor our graduate show, New Blades, each year.”

TIMBER TECHNOLOGY GETS AN A* FOR EDUCATION The growing demand for new school buildings across the UK has seen a move towards offsite manufactured solid timber structures as a fast and effective method of construction, providing an ideal sustainable solution for educational environments.

As one of the UK’s leading specialist contractors in the design and delivery of hybrid structures - optimised in terms of cost, performance and sustainability - B & K Structures offer an award winning service across an extensive portfolio encompassing glulam, cross laminated timber (CLT), timber cassettes and steel. As more research unfolds, the connection between building materials and the comfort and wellbeing of its occupants is something that is becoming increasingly more apparent. Not only are hybrid timber structures sustainable and adaptable, they deliver a natural and calming environment, providing a peaceful space for teaching and learning. The level of noise in a building can have a direct effect on the productivity of its occupants. Cross laminated timber, has a significantly higher density than timber frame structures which offers acoustic advantages, this results in a reduction in noise levels for the transmission of airborne sound.

As the connection between health and wellbeing and productivity becomes more significant, designers are taking into consideration the structural systems available to create the optimum educational environment. Due to the company’s sustainable

credentials, B & K Structures were appointed by Morgan Sindall to develop the structural frame for the first zero carbon business school in the UK, at Essex University. Plans were progressed for a three storey educational building and a single storey MBA lecture theatre at the University. The design of the facilities intended to provide students, staff and business partners with innovative spaces for study and meetings that focused around a winter garden, in an Eden Project style dome. B & K Structures provided the enhanced hybrid structures, consisting of glulam columns, glulam floor beams, wall cassettes and a cross laminated timber floor deck. The structure of the main building was curved and used Whitewood Spruce glulam beams, the visual winter garden used Larch glulam beams and encompassed an Ethylene Tetra Fluoro Ethylene (ETFE) along with a timber roof. This acted as a buffer zone as well as supporting the reflexive ventilation and heating strategy of the building. Photovoltaics were added to the roof, to improve carbon emissions and deliver renewable energy from a combined heat and power installation. The main lecture

theatre consisted of glulam, steel nodes, cross laminated timber and curved wall cassettes that were assembled between the raking glulam columns and put together onsite rather than preconstructed offsite, so that the curved effect could be achieved. The new building aimed to create a stimulating learning environment for students, reflecting the importance of university’s sustainability ethos. The carbon neutral build demonstrates renewable technologies in action, with the intention of achieving a BREEAM rating of Excellent. By selecting the most effective combination of systems and materials to meet the brief and performance specification, B & K Structures, the UK’s leading sustainable frame contractor, specialise in the design, manufacture and delivery of optimised hybrid structures

NEW FLAT BAR SLIDING SHUTTER: THE LATEST INNOVATION IN SOLAR CONTROL An ultra-slim solar control system has been created by Hunter Douglas, the leading global manufacturer of architectural products, to meet the demands of the most modern of building designs.

At just five millimetres thick, the minimalist Flat Bar shutter is at least 50% thinner than existing alternatives on the market. Pieter van Rees, European Marketing Manager at Hunter Douglas, said the beauty of the Flat Bar shutter’s aluminium frame is that it is as unobtrusive as possible to meet the architects’ aesthetic requirements. “Even the screws used to attach the fins are less conspicuous, as we had them powder-coated along with the fins to make sure all of the system’s components have the same colour,” he said. “That way, the parts used for mounting the system don’t stand out.” The powder-coating treatment means that only the S and Z fins are suitable for use with Flat Bar; if hollow fins were used, the coating would seep in, which would affect the system’s quality. This design innovation, which is available in all standard RAL colours to mother of pearl, has been used be dramatic effect in a minimalist-style housing complex in Brescia, Italy. Not only does the system’s shading and thermal performance match that of other Hunter Douglas sliding shutter systems, it also guarantees privacy for occupiers as the view from the outside is obscured whilst still allowing light into the rooms.

The sliding shutters can be closed manually horizontally or vertically, depending on how the shutters are mounted, or motorised. Fabio Brivio, Unit Manager for Hunter Douglas Italy, explains: “‘Initially, Studio 5+1 Architetti Associati opted for a different solar control system, but with that one the users couldn’t block the window entirely from top to bottom. “That is one reason why the Flat Bar system was eventually chosen. The design played a part in the decision, too. The building’s façade has a minimalist look and the sliding shutters fit in perfectly, thanks to their slim construction. “Interestingly, it looks as though the sliding shutters were installed separately on the façade, rather than being integrated – another detail that matched the architect’s style: he likes to combine different materials and techniques, for instance, glued tiles, a wooden façade and a painted wall.” The Hunter Douglas Flat Bar sliding shutter system is suitable for all applications and works particularly well with housing. Its minimalist style makes it an ideal solution for lower-budget projects. Web: Enquiry No.202.

MARMOX HERAKLITH PANELS HELP RESTORE POST WAR CHURCH Hundreds of square metres of thermo-acoustic woodwool boards made by Heraklith and supplied by by Marmox have been employed in the restoration of a significant church building, located in East London, following weather damage.

The Encasement Specialist

Pendock manufactures a unique range of casings and enclosure systems and is recognised as the UK market leader. For many years specifiers and contractors have recognised the versatility of Pendock's products. Pendock have developed comprehensive solutions to the challenges of enclosing structures for building interiors. All Pendock products are manufactured in Britain.

St. Paul’s Church, Bow Common has been described as the most significant church built in Britain since the Second World War, having been completed in 1960 to the designs of architect, Robert Maguire, along with interior designer, Keith Murray. The brick built structure with its geometric lantern light stands on a prominent site and is Grade II* listed. Having celebrated the 50th anniversary of its consecration in 2010 – a relatively short time-span in ecclesiastical terms – water ingress led to a sudden and serious collapse of some of the existing woodwool ceiling panels during 2013. The area beneath the lantern was cordoned off immediately and services moved westward into a safe-zone, so there were never any questions that the building could not be used. Now though, a

comprehensive repair contract carried out by Noble & Taylor, Ongar, has been completed with significant funding by the Heritage Lottery Fund. During the painstaking work a total of 135 standard Heraklith panels were consumed by Noble & Taylor’s craftsmen: being readily cut to shape on site and decorated as desired by the consultants to match as closely as possible the original decorative scheme.

In the Plan B project, Metsä Wood explores the possibilities of wood by planning how to construct iconic buildings out of wood. The third case is the Reichstag, the home of the German parliament. The design was created together with Metsä Wood’s customer and partner, the leading German timber construction company FH Finnholz, specifically their construction engineer Andreas Rutschmann. “Wood construction is the ideal way to both battle climate change and house a growing urban population. As a large part of the German Parliament’s work is about environmental legislation, it really makes sense that its home is as sustainable as possible. It was great to hear that Plan B will be presented to the parliament’s department of Energy policy”, said Andreas Rutschmann. METSA WOOD Enquiry No.408.

INDOOR-OUTDOOR KITCHENS Indoor-outdoor kitchens add versatility to your living space with more room when it's fine outside and the impression of limitless space when it's not. And according to Michael Wright, of Yorkshire-based Michael Wright Kitchens and Interiors, this design is the perfect way to make the most of a fabulous view, or to give light and space to smaller rooms. Said Michael: "Indoor-outdoor kitchens allow the

room to be flooded with light which can give smaller rooms the illusion of space. When the weather is nice the kitchen extends to the outdoors with ease, making the most of whatever space is available. "The secret to achieving the look is through a ‘wall of glass' which keeps you snug and insulated in the winter and opens up in good weather to marry the indoors with the outdoors, seamlessly. The use of sliding patio doors or fashionably popular bi-folding doors can both make it work."

to create its ‘dashed’ appearance that becomes strikingly 3D when illuminated at night. Barr Gazetas’ use of Corten steel for the sign and stair cladding, combined with the corrugations of the containers creates a striking ‘industrialistic’ look - the Corten steel is a specialist ‘weathering’ steel that is typically installed unpainted and allowed to oxidise (rust) to create a patinated finish. The Angel of the North is made of this material, as are the cladding panels of shipping containers because of the Corten steel’s corrosion resistant properties. S Jones Containers’ stock- in-trade is to provide containers to meet unusual requirements. Previously the company designed, manufactured and supplied the modified containers for the iconic Wahaca restaurant on London’s South Bank. Tom Lacey, associate director at Barr Gazetas, said: “We found that by working directly with SJC as the designer and manufacturer, it brought us closer to the manufacturing process, giving us greater control of the development of the specification as it progressed.”

Home to some of the UK’s most creative businesses, Battersea Studio’s owners were keen to make the most of every square foot of the iconic building at Silverthorne Road, Battersea. So London based architects Barr Gazetas commissioned West Midlands (Aldridge) based S Jones Containers to help bring their innovative solution to life. S Jones Containers has supplied two modified shipping containers as the basis for the pop up café, so the former

cafeteria space in the main building can be redeveloped for additional rentable space. The containers were designed and supplied together with the access stairs and mezzanine platform, and roof structure with letter ‘B’ sign that sits on top of the overall structure. The ‘B’ sign, which weighs a considerable 1400kg, is mounted onto a complex support structure. It is fabricated from 20mm thick laser cut Corten steel sections

S Jones Containers’ senior technical sales and design manager Les Newick explained that shipping containers provide great flexibility and adaptability and are ideal for this kind of installation. “When combined with creativity and engineering know-how, they can be extensively applied to a host of diverse projects. He added that a particularly challenging stage of the installation was the roof canopy and 1.4 tonne “B” sign, as they had to be lifted and pre-assembled in a single crane lift.” Email: or visit Web: Enquiry No.216.

A brand new luxury apartment complex in West London has been fitted with a range of air source and exhaust air heat pump systems from NIBE – providing residents with a costeffective, sustainable and dependable supply of heating, hot water and ventilation. Located directly opposite Ravenscourt Park on Goldhawk Road, in the desirable Hammersmith area of London, Parkside Place comprises 40 high-spec, one-, two- and three-bed homes. Tasked with ensuring the complex met Code for Sustainable Homes Level Four standards, developer Linden Homes needed to find a reliable solution to efficiently meet the properties’ space heating and hot water needs, while simultaneously supplying sufficient ventilation for the well-insulated, new-build homes. Providing residents with optimum efficiency and a comfortable indoor environment – as well as a system that would be both economical and easy to use – were also key considerations for the project. Having specified NIBE products for previous developments, Alex Jordan, Technical Manager at Linden Homes, opted for NIBE F470 exhaust air heat pump (EAHP) systems for each of the development’s 23 single-level apartments. The remaining 16 split-level duplexes and one mews house were each fitted with an air source heat pump (ASHP) package system made up of an 8kW NIBE F2040 ASHP and a NIBE VVM320 combined water storage and controls unit. Alex explains: “With a strong focus on sustainability at the heart of the whole development, performance, efficiency and reliability were top priorities for us when it came to choosing the right heating systems for Parkside Place. Not only do the homes boast high levels of airtightness, they are also fitted with water-based underfloor heating throughout – making them ideally suited for heat pumps (which operate at similarly low flow temperatures). NIBE’s F470 EAHPs were just right for the smaller, single-level apartments, particularly as they offer the added benefit of keeping the homes properly ventilated – which is crucial given how well-insulated they are. However, Parkside’s 16 duplexes and mews house are bigger than its standard apartments, and therefore have a higher heat demand, so the output provided by a NIBE F470 EAHP wouldn’t have sufficed. For this reason, we

opted for 8kW NIBE F2040 ASHPs instead, as these are the perfect size for slightly larger domestic applications. Conveniently, the duplexes’ terraces provided the necessary outdoor space to accommodate the external ASHP units. We also coupled the ASHPs with compact, all-in-one NIBE VVM 320 hot water storage and control units. All of the NIBE systems are now fully up and running, and are doing a great job of keeping the homes warm and comfortable.” NIBE F470 EAHPs work by recovering warm stale air from inside of the smaller apartments’ ‘wet rooms’ (e.g. the kitchen and bathroom) and feeding this back to the heat pump via a ducting system. The energy recovered from this air is then re-used to provide efficient heating and hot water, while fresh air is drawn back into the homes for ventilation. Specified in the larger duplexes and mews house, NIBE’s MCSaccredited F2040 air source heat pumps are designed to meet 100% of properties’ heating power demand. They feature highend inverter technology for maximum efficiency, reliability and heating output all year round. They are also ideally suited to partner with the NIBE VVM320 – a complete plug-and-play indoor unit featuring a stainless steel hot water cylinder, integrated buffer vessel, climate-controlled automatic shunt valve, selfregulating A-class design circulation pump and backup immersion heater, as well as intuitive, user-friendly controls.

An amateur beekeeper has used Norbord’s SterlingOSB to house his three colonies of bees in Maidenhead, Berkshire and Egham, Surrey. Beekeeper, Richard Emmett, has used SterlingOSB as a ready substitute to build his three ‘National’ hives to house his bee colonies. Due to the single-walled nature of the hive, and the sensitivities of wild bees, it is imperative that they are made using light, weatherproof, untreated materials. Many National hives used by British beekeepers are made of cedar wood or pine but these materials are relatively expensive. NORBORD’ Enquiry No.421.

For many years, the preferred material for decking suspended timber floors has been chipboard – and that shows no sign of changing. Norbord’s CaberBoard flooring panel is the UK’s best-selling chipboard flooring product, its handy dimensions allowing ease of handling and its robust tongue-and-groove edging ensuring a secure and even surface. Today things are moving on. As the housing market continues to grow strongly, tradesmen are obliged to look for methods of completing projects faster and more efficiently. Consequently, more of them are looking beyond the standard CaberFloor P5 panel and choosing Norbord’s advanced CaberDek and CaberShieldPlus products. NORBORD Enquiry No.422.

WET AND ELECTRIC UNDERFLOOR HEATING IN COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENTS When specifying heating in commercial buildings, underfloor heating (UFH) is increasingly seen as the system that offers the levels of energy efficiency and comfort required. In design terms, UFH provides the added benefit that, unlike radiators, it does not have an impact on interior aesthetics and layouts. This leaves just one perplexing issue; whether to opt for a wet (hydronic) system or an electric system. Both offer advantages and disadvantages. Wet UFH systems circulate water heated to around 45-50ºC through loops of pipe laid into the screed of solid floors or the joists of suspended timber floors. The low temperature of the water used makes these systems energy efficient and ideally suited to use with air or ground source heat pumps or district heating systems. Electric systems use a continuous cable, either laid within the screed or supplied as a mat which is laid above the subfloor. GAIA

BRITISH GYPSUM HITS THE RIGHT NOTE AT GLASGOW ROYAL CONCERT HALL A range of British Gypsum systems have been used in the refurbishment of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the new home of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO). The aim of the project was to create a comfortable working environment for the new headquarters of the renowned symphony orchestra. In particular, the RSNO needed soundproofed spaces for rehearsals and performances to take place, so an acoustic interior lining solution was required to meet its specific needs. Ronnie Szczotka, Site Manager at Veitchi Interiors, who oversaw the installation for Veitchi, said: “Being a concert hall, the main concern was to reduce the amount of sound travel between each room. The GypWall CLASSIC and Gypwall AUDIO systems have made a huge improvement to the acoustics throughout the building, which has allowed the RSNO to use each room to its full potential without having

to worry about making too much noise when other performances or rehearsals are in progress.” Over 6,000 square metres of British Gypsum plasterboard was installed by Veitchi Interiors, including British Gypsum Gyproc SoundBloc, which was used on the walls and partitions in the practice areas, concert hall, recording studios and circulation areas. The high-performance acoustic plasterboard features a higher density core which reduces noise pollution to minimise disruption throughout the building when used as part of a GypWall system.

For more information about British Gypsum ACTIVair technology, please visit:

As the concert hall is both a working environment and a public space, which occupants often inhabit for long periods of time, Glasgow City Council had wellbeing at the forefront of mind and was keen to achieve the highest levels of air quality possible. It was therefore decided to select the Gyproc SoundBloc plasterboard with added ACTIVair technology. ACTIVair technology works by capturing VOCs and converting them into nonharmful inert compounds, eliminating the risk of re-emission. The technology, which has been proven to reduce VOC concentration levels by 70 per cent[1], works for up to 50 years providing long lasting improvements to air quality for building occupants. ACTIVair is effective through a paint finish and does not impact on the fire or acoustic qualities of a product, making it ideal for use in the concert hall building. ACTIVair solutions are also useful for spaces like commercial offices and hotels which are occupied for prolonged periods of time. Ronnie Szczotka added: “We are seeing more and more requests for innovative

ways to improve indoor air quality, particularly in commercial environments where it is important to maintain a comfortable, healthy environment for workers and members of the public. Some of the rooms at the Royal Glasgow Concert Hall don’t have natural sources of ventilation so there is no escape route for formaldehyde. It is therefore imperative that the indoor air is kept as clean as possible by finding ways to reduce the amount of formaldehyde in the air. Glasgow City Council was really pleased with the steps taken to improve the air quality, and because British Gypsum was able to combine this ACTIVair technology with the high acoustic performance of Gyproc SoundBloc, we were able to meet both requirements with one product.” GypWall Classic and GypWall AUDIO partition systems and Casoline MF Ceilings systems were used to meet the project’s performance requirements. Alongside Gyproc SoundBloc ACTIVair Gyproc FireLine was used for increased fire protection in the public and communal areas of the building to help meet building regulations under the Fire Safety (Scotland) regulations 2006.

HUNTER DOUGLAS FLY HIGH WITH BESPOKE SOLUTION FOR GOODWOOD AERODROME Hunter Douglas used its engineering and creative expertise to design a unique solution for a £1.6 million prestige building at Goodwood Aero Club.

The contemporary Aero Club building, designed by London-based architect State of the Craft to house the café and flight school at this world-famous aviation site in Chichester, West Sussex, is visually striking, with clean, linear lines. To complement this ultra-modern, sleek look, the architects commissioned Hunter Douglas to design and manufacture 24 fully automated and motorised external roller blind systems, each measuring 7.5 m2 (80.7 ft2) for the predominantly glassfronted building. The motorised external roller blinds are protected from high winds with automated wind sensors. Each section has its own remote control for the

corresponding group of blinds and Hunter Douglas also supplied a master remote control for the site manager so that a single button can control all the blinds simultaneously. Mike Foulston, Specification Sales Manager at Hunter Douglas, worked closely with the architects and awardwinning local building contractor Tasker Catchpole to create a system that would fulfil the design aesthetic and be fully functional. “We were tasked with providing a bespoke solution to anchor the side guide wires of the blinds to the polished concrete floor that are peripheral to the building,” he said.

“It created numerous challenges for the design team but we found a neat and innovative solution to ensure that we could stay true to the architect’s vision. Key to this was Hunter Douglas continued efforts to meet the needs of the project on time and to a tight deadline.” Architect Mário Lourenço specified a Helioscreen fabric, a PVC-coated fibreglass fabric that has superior solar heat and light control properties, in Carré Black. Hunter Douglas powder-coated the bespoke anchors to complement the external glazing hardware, and the leading specialist manufacturer also created a tailor-made closure to cover the pocket behind the blind headbox, which was powder-coated to match external glazing, thereby creating a clean, seamless finish to the overall installation. John Wells, project manager at Tasker Catchpole, said: “It was a complex design that create a number of design challenges for us and Hunter Douglas, but the team was exceptional in the way that it tackled the problems, coming up with a creative solution that enabled us to work together to make this one-off design work perfectly and look great, too.” Enquiry No.236.

MORE SCHUECO SLIDING DOOR SYSTEMS MEET PAS 24 SECURITY STANDARDS As part of an ongoing programme of security testing to PAS 24, leading sustainable building envelope specialist Schueco UK reports an increase in the number of its sliding door systems that meet this police-approved standard. Newly qualifying systems include Schueco ASS 70.HI lift/slide double track, bi-parting and triple track doors, as well as the slide-only versions. Schueco ASS 70 FD and ASS 80 FD.HI sliding/folding doors (depending on design) have also been successfully tested. With the recently introduced Building Regulation AD Q and the continuing demand for improved security, this announcement will be welcome news for both specifiers and fabricators looking to deliver ultimate peace-of-mind to clients. While in general Schueco tests systems to the EN 1627 security standard – which covers primarily manual attack methods – this regime is supplemented in the UK by testing to PAS 24, which is the police-preferred alternative. The PAS 24 tests take the form of manual attacks with a prescribed range of tools, together with numerous mechanical bi-directional loadings to replicate attacks on the locking points, hinges etc. Additionally, approved locking cylinders must have features such as anti-bump and anti-drill. Having found the house of their dreams in a quiet North London street, Marcelle and Robert Schogger, decided to extend in order to create a spacious kitchen and dining area. They were determined that steel windows should be the key architectural feature of their project and, with this in mind, they appointed Steel Window Association member, Steel Window Service & Supplies, to supply and install a large window and door screen. Robert Schogger, a director of a manged office provider, designed the 300 sq ft extension and project-managed the build. The couple had first seen steel windows featured in a magazine a few years earlier and knew they fitted with their desire to achieve a classic look within their early 1900s house. Stuart Hicks, from cold liquidapplied waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, discusses how a change of membrane addressed failing waterproofing at a luxury residential development in Saltdean, near Brighton.

REPAIRS, REFURBISHMENT AND WATER INGRESS BY THE SEA The Grand Ocean Hotel in Saltdean, near Brighton, epitomises a bygone era of glamourous seaside elegance. First opened in 1938, the Grade II listed building’s crescent-shaped white façade makes it a classic of Art Deco architectural design. Once a popular honeymoon destination owned by Billy Butlin it is now the central building from which a development of luxury apartments takes its name. The scheme has seen the refurbishment of the original structure and construction of four new build blocks designed in keeping with the former hotel. Problems with the integrity of the waterproofing system that was originally specified for the project became apparent even before the scheme was completed, leading to a change of both roofing contractor and, eventually, roofing system. Integrity Issues: Both the existing hotel building and the new builds have flat roofs and architect, Rolfe Judd, had specified a liquid waterproofing membrane. Unfortunately, the system selected was not robust enough to adhere seamlessly to the roof substrate and the assumption was made that the issue lay with the quality of installation rather than the suitability of the membrane. A new roofing contractor, Cawston Roofing, was

Enquiry No.246

brought in to carry out repairs to the membrane but, as the existing roof build up was still under warranty, Cawston Roofing was required to carry out repairs using the same product. Inverted Refurbishment: Having used Kemper Systems’ Kemperol membranes on a wide variety of construction projects in the past, Cawston Roofing was confident in recommending Kemperol V210, a cold liquid-applied waterproofing membrane. The originally-specified membrane had been installed beneath the insulation as an inverted roof build up for the new apartment blocks. Cawston Roofing removed the paving slabs and green roof medium along with the insulation and, where possible, this was stored for re-use. The company then prepared and cleaned the roof surface and, in the areas around the upstands where the failed membrane had not bonded, the team pulled off the damaged membrane. The existing insulation, slabs and green roof medium were then reinstated to complete the roof. Hotel Roof: The damage caused by the failed waterproofing membrane on the roof and balconies of the former hotel building was even more significant because the original roof build-up was not

inverted. The balconies were tackled first, with strip out of the entire roof build-up. Here, not only had the originally-specified membrane failed, but the insulation below it had begun to rot too. New insulation had to be cut to size and shape and this was done while the Kemperol V210 membrane was being installed so that the balconies could be completed as quickly as possible. To aid water run-off in the future, Kemper System designed a tapered Kempertherm insulation scheme, introducing a slight pitch to each section of roof. Cawston Roofing pre-primed each piece of board in an on-site workshop during the winter months to aid faster installation once the weather improved. When weather conditions did improve, the Kempertherm sections were fixed to the substrate and joint sealed before application of the Kemperol V210 membrane began. Holiday Heritage: Thanks to the replacement of the originally-specified waterproofing system with Kemperol V210, the building not only provides a stylish address on the coast that is warm and dry for residents but also protects a slice of the UK’s holidaymaking heritage and an iconic listed building.

RAISING THE ROOFLINE Unusually shaped, the architecturally stunning Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen in Scotland is designed to assist in the psychological and emotional healing process for those affected by cancer. A Licensed Icynene contractor installed both Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and Icynene H2 Foam LiteTM in the pebble-shaped structure. Situated on the southern boundary of the Foresterhill site of the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen, Scotland, Maggie’s Cancer Centre is the latest such centre to provide emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer.

Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and used seven sets of the open cell Icynene H2Foam LiteTM throughout the curved structure. Spray foam crews applied the medium- density material on the lower part of the structure to a height of 2.5m in an effort to provide additional structural strength. Being 100% water blown, Icynene H2Foam ForteTM has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 1 - the lowest GWP available. In additional to providing structural strength, the closed cell product also can reject bulk water penetrating through the building envelope. Above the 2.5m mark and across the curved roofline Icynene H2Foam LiteTM was applied. Due to the unique curvature of the roofline, crews had to aid the rise of the foam by hand to ensure consistent and even coverage. As a result of using spray foam insulation throughout the design, an extremely high R-value was achieved. With a high R-value, staff and visitors to Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen will be able to work and heal in comfort all year round regardless of the season.

The centre, designed to be homely and full of warmth, aims to provide an environment where those facing cancer can gain support. The centre also intends to inspire imagination from visitors and has contributed to the architecture of the Aberdeen city area. The Design: Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, together with Scottish firm, Halliday Fraser Munro, took on the challenge to create a visually stunning structure in the shape of a pebble. The unusually-shaped single storey structure features a reinforced concrete exterior and timber interior. Steel reinforcements were used to form the structure’s unique shape. With activity and meeting rooms located on the ground floor and office space on the mezzanine, the centre features high-end interior finishes and manages to create a peaceful, welcoming and beautiful space for anyone who visits. Insulating Maggie’s Cancer Centre: A Licensed local Icynene contractor was enlisted by Halliday Fraser Munro to help insulate the centre in February 2013 using two high performance Icynene spray foam insulation products. The spray foam insulation crew used five sets of the 100% water-blown closed cell medium density

Both Icynene H2Foam LiteTM and Icynene H2Foam ForteTM contribute to creating a positive, peaceful and comfortable environment for visitors to the new centre in Aberdeen.

The Result: Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen was completed and opened in September 2013. The structure, set apart by a small landscaped area, is open to anyone requiring its services and support. The unusual shape and highly visual design has been receiving attention from the architecture community and the greater Aberdeen community. In November 2013, the centre was awarded a Commendation by Aberdeen’s Civic Society and in March 2014, GMS Insulations Ltd, the Icynene distributor in the UK, was awarded the Best Architectural Project – International at the Icynene 2014 Global Conference for their involvement in the project.

VMZINC FOCAL POINT FOR £14M HASTINGS PIER REDEVELOPMENT The restored, Grade II-listed Hastings Pier, built in 1872, has natural VMZINC® standing seam roofs which are undoubtedly the most immediately recognisable feature of the £14.2m redevelopment. dRMM architects’ vision to restore the pier to its former glory has been a resounding success following years of neglect, closure for eight years and a fire which tore through it in 2010. Described as a national Victorian treasure, the domed roofs spanning covered seating areas are particularly eye catching and complement façades installed using the same system. Both will weather to take on the textured, natural grey patina which is so reminiscent of lead. The standing seam work was undertaken by specialist metals contractor Roles Broderick Roofing, whose craftsmen finished the roofs with ornamental zinc finials. Phase 2 of the project will see VMZINC PIGMENTO® Blue 1mm thick interlocking panels used on walls of the pier’s new visitor centre. VMZINC®

Envirolead, from Envirowales, is BS12588 lead produced using material recovered exclusively from car batteries. The highly sophisticated process extracts and reuses nearly 96% of the constituent parts of any battery, only polypropylene currently lacking an economic means of reuse. Envirolead is covered by the 50-year Lead Sheet Association warranty and carries all the benefits of standard rolled lead. However, for the first time architects have an opportunity to capitalise on one of the most efficient forms of recycling and know they are specifying a product with the lowest possible environmental impact. Envirowales is the only plant in the UK to use this process which significantly reduces sulphur discharge, a major component of ‘acid rain’. With lead demand for construction increasing again Envirolead is set to make a major contribution to increasing the 50% of consumption worldwide which is currently met by recycled material.

The UK’s only PVC and TPE single ply manufacturer, IKO Polymeric, has officially launched Armourdek, a pre-fabricated long spanning roof deck for fast track installation. Factory finished with BBA certified Armourplan PVC or Spectraplan TPE single ply membrane, Armourdek is ideal for high performance waterproof roofing. With excellent thermal and acoustic properties it offers superb air tightness and its ‘zero waste’ manufacturing approach means no material used goes to landfill. It can be used in all construction sectors and is suitable for steel, concrete and timber frames. The way it’s made means big savings in time and resources to construction projects.

For example, as the single ply membrane is applied to Armourdek in the factory the panel can simply be delivered and craned into place on site, minimising the need to install a separate roofing system. This saves a significant amount of time – and with available sizes up to 12m x 4m, installation can be as quick as 1,000m2 per day! IKO Polymeric offers a full service from initial consultation through to specification and design and on-going monitoring and maintenance. An explainer brochure for Armourdek is available which highlights all the benefits and includes technical drawings and load tables. Enquiry No.249.

AURUBIS ARCHITECTURAL COPPER IN VISION Leading architectural copper supplier Aurubis will be exhibiting its latest range of copper surfaces and alloys on Stand 27 at Vision, Olympia London, from 7-8 June. Aurubis offers dedicated expertise in helping architects to realise their designs in copper with the added strengths of a major international group. As the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler, Aurubis is redefining the material for contemporary architecture with the ongoing development of its ‘Nordic’ products providing straightaway surfaces that otherwise take years to develop in the atmosphere - particularly for facades. The processes involved are generally similar to those taking place naturally over time in

the environment, utilising copper mineral compounds, not alien chemical processes. Essentially, they bring forward environmental changes without taking away the integrity of copper as a natural, living material. All these surfaces form an integral part of the copper and are not coatings or paint. The material is easily bent and formed, and there are no

limitations on the length of copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets. Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper offers lighter or darker shades of brown, determined by the thickness of the oxide layer. Then, Nordic Blue and Nordic Green ranges enable designers to determine both the colour and intensity of patina with ‘living’ surfaces. As well as solid green, blue and turquoise patina colour, other intensities can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material. Aurubis’ experts can also work with architects to develop specific levels of patination to meet design requirements or to match historically patinated copper.

Of course, copper alloys have also been used throughout history and Nordic Bronze and Nordic Brass (which can also be pre-weathered) are used for architectural applications. In addition, an innovative alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc – Nordic Royal – gives a rich golden through-colour retained over time, simply developing a protective matt finish without any green or blue patination.

Richard Mosson, James Latham’s Group Cladding and Decking Manager commented, “The WPC decking market in the US is currently worth $1.6 billion and is set to grow to $3 billion by 2020 which is enormous and here in the UK we are seeing its popularity growing all the time both in the commercial and residential sectors as the market comes to appreciate not only the low maintenance benefits but also the long term cost advantage.” He continued, “The quality of the UPM ProFi Deck range is exceptional. Long-life and ultra-low maintenance has been engineered into the product, plus, due to the innovative use of recycled materials – some of the range is made using up to 95% - it has won several international awards, with the product making a major contribution to reducing traditional landfill and incineration which is really important to James Latham.”

As well as being the largest manufacturer of shower trays, MX offers a wide range of electric showers, thermostatic shower valves, shower enclosures, brassware and the widest range of shower accessories in the UK, from its factories in Tewkesbury and Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire. protect the finish in the more harsh environments around the UK, such as that of coastal applications, swimming pool enclosures and industrial atmospheres for example, specifiers can request a marine guarantee.

by Wojciech Brozyna - MD of Aluprof

The formulation of powder coating surface treatments has advanced over the forty years that powder coating was first specified for architectural metalwork. Many of the original finished projects are still in use today with the coating still doing its job protecting the aluminium substrate. Currently, the majority of the architectural powder coating specified in the UK use ‘standard’ powders which offer excellent adhesion and long life. Whilst

the ‘standard’ powder protection properties are excellent, there are two measures that specifiers need to take into consideration when specifying powder coating, that of colour variation and gloss retention. Standard powders last well, but can lose gloss and colour depending on weathering. By using more robust compounds, typically with a cost implication, both colour variation and gloss retention can be tightly controlled for an even longer aesthetic looking finish. Aluprof apply powder coating to the Qualicoat standard and the specification is now in its 14th edition. The standard powders are known as ‘Class 1’ formulations in the Qualicoat specification and carry specific weathering characteristics. Class 2 powders, sometimes referred to as ‘Superdurable’, use more robust compounds and are being recognised by a growing number of specifiers for prestigious projects across the UK. Class 2 powders offer a superior resistance to UV and are more expensive; these powders can offer extended life expectancy with reduced maintenance.

There is a further class, that of Class 3 powders, sometimes referred to as ‘Hyperdurable’, tend to be specified for use in more inhospitable regions of the globe where even more robust finishes are required. I see specifiers now turning to Class 2 for their prestigious projects in the UK and the trend is set to continue. Aluprof have long recognised the importance of Class 2 powders and are encouraging their use where high performance finishes are required, for specification assistance, please contact us directly. To ensure we supply the highest quality of powder coating, some powders, such as the popular colour grey, RAL 9006, are coated at Aluprof in the more robust Class 2 powder as standard. This ensures that we offer a superior finish to many of our competitors, a finish that will ultimately last the lifetime of the building. To further

Normal powder coating pretreatment consists of acid etching the aluminium profile and then applying a chrome based, or non-chrome pre-treatment, this seals the aluminium and provides a key for the powder coating to adhere too. At Aluprof we can offer specifiers either pretreatment, however, chrome based systems are to be phased out in 2017 under new European legislation. To obtain a marine guarantee, specifiers need to request the Qualicoat ‘Seaside Class’. The aluminium profile is instead etched and flash anodised prior to powder application. This ensures the very best protection against corrosion and eliminates the possibility of filiform corrosion occurring from cut and machined edges of the aluminium. The importance of powder coating very quickly after flash anodising is crucial and at Aluprof the flash anodising facility is located within the paint plant.
