Marmoleum Striato - Colourstream

Forbo offers range of floor treatments at hospice Forbo Flooring Systems was recently involved in a major refurbishment project at Naomi House Children’s Hospice in Winchester, supplying a range of products that have helped to create stimulating and calming environments whilst addressing safety, hygiene and infection control concerns.

Flotex Vision Enquiry No.200

David Golland of Building Surveying & Project Management Ltd managed the partial demolition and rebuild of the hospice. He commented: “I’ve worked with Forbo many times so I have a good relationship with them. They were very helpful in assisting in the selection of appropriate floor coverings for this project.” One area that presented a challenge was the main corridor that curves around the building. Forbo proposed Marmoleum Striato in Colourstream which has multi-coloured crayon-like stripes. Carefully shaped and cut, the resulting floor is hygienic and

Surestep Laguna

hardwearing and makes a strong visual statement. Using Flotex Vision, a calming cobblestone pattern has been created in an area used by parents visiting their children. Flotex is very durable as the pile is constructed from millions of tightly packed upright nylon fibres that also give the flooring excellent sound absorption properties. Forbo’s unique hybrid product has also earned the Allergy UK Seal of Approval. David said: “The Flotex has been laid in a quiet seating area where parents can take a break and enjoy the views of the garden. The area has full height glazing and the cobblestone pattern ‘brings the outside in’. This flooring is fully washable and resilient but it has the feel of carpet, so it really helps to create a comfortable environment.” Surestep Laguna safety flooring has been used in hospice bathrooms, and bold patterns featuring footsteps, bubbles and dolphins have been

created for the enjoyment of all the young patients. Surestep Laguna offers barefoot and footwear slip resistance and has been designed to maintain its fresh and clean appearance. Made from 60% recycled materials and 100% recyclable, it offers an environmentally friendly flooring solution. Mark Smith, Chief Executive of Naomi House said: “A key part of the project design brief was to balance the clinical needs of a modern hospice with our desire to create a homely environment for the children and their families who use the building. Forbo helped the team to select a variety of floor coverings for the different parts of the building, creating innovative design solutions whilst satisfying the requirements of infection control, resulting in a fabulous interior which is enjoyed and admired by all who use it.”

MAPEI products specified for tiling renovation at Freemasons’ Hall Mapei adhesive and grout products have been specified for the installation of a stone pattern in the reception and washroom areas in a refurbishment to the Freemasons’ Hall, London. The Hall first opened in 1933 as a memorial to the 3,255 Freemasons who died during active service in the First

World War, and has been used for events, the meeting place for the Grand Lodge, and annual meetings of the home counties since. Avantgarde Tiling was awarded the contract to design, supply and install a new stone pattern to the reception floor area and to install large format porcelain tiles and feature walls

(including stone vanity and credenza tops) to the washroom area. Mapei products were specified to complete the tiling projects, and included the popular Limestone Ultracolor Plus grout (shade reference 299) which was applied to 70m2 of tiling within the reception area of the building. Kerapoxy white was applied to 94m2 of washroom tiles, ensuring that a stain

resistant approach was installed in areas subject to heavy traffic. The Grade II* listed building is reputed to be one of the finest Art Deco buildings in England and as such due to its popularity was in constant use throughout the renovation work. The reception area was completed over two weekends of work, first requiring a quick setting screed for the installation of substrate. Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 was specified for its quick setting properties, allowing Avantgarde Tiling Ltd. to install a temporary carpet over the substrate so that the venue could be used without any constraints. The following weekend, the installation of the new stone floor was carried out entirely using Mapei’s Ecoprim T, Adesilex P10 for mosaics, Elastorapid Grey A for fast track floors and Keraflex Grey Maxi for the large format walls. These Mapei products were used due to their suitability for the listed interior of the building. Repair and protect with FILA Salvaterrazza New to the UK, Fila Salvaterrazza provides a complete repair and protection solution for spa and leisure surfaces – from swimming pool tanks and surrounds, to steamrooms and changing rooms. Designed for stone, porcelain, ceramic and concrete, the solution consolidates surfaces without creating a film. It then prevents future water penetration, mould and efflorescence formation, and protects against frost and damp. Ready-to-use Salvaterrazza also provides high coverage, does not alter appearance and will not ‘yellow’ with age. Salvaterrazza can be used to treat terracotta, quarry tiles, natural stone, porcelain, ceramic, concrete and composite surfaces. It also protects grout joints. The solution is brush-applied and penetrates fissures, forming a chemical bond and consolidating cracks up to 1mm in depth. Once applied, it allows the material to breathe, preventing any issues with rising damp. In addition to leisure environments, the treatment can also be used on damaged and weather-worn paths and patios. Before application, all surfaces should be cleaned with a suitable deep cleaning treatment; Fila recommends FILAPS87 degreasing detergent or, for acid-resistant surfaces, FILA Deterdek; a fume-free buffered acid solution. Salvaterrazza should then be worked into the surface with a cloth, before any excess treatment is removed. Surfaces can then be walked on after 24 hours.

As a provider of hybrid structural solutions, optimised in terms of cost, performance and sustainability through careful design detailing and value engineering, the specialist B & K Structures team is able to offer the best possible structural solution. Connections Count Connection details are important for the structural performance and serviceability of hybrid timber structures. The larger sizes and longer spans made possible with glulam components make the detailing of connections even more critical. Connections must be designed to transfer loads without causing localised stress concentrations beyond the capacity of either the connector or the timber member. Design drawings are intended to convey the engineer’s concept, however in a complex structure it is challenging to accommodate all of the loads, member sizes and geometry required for special connections. Connections often need to be modified for reasons of constructability and economy during the detailing phase. Traditionally the structural engineer establishes the strength and stiffness requirements for all connections on the design drawings along with the preferred method of load transfer. Long-span truss connections must carry large forces while allowing for fabrication tolerances, yet still provide easy onsite assembly. In some instances it may be necessary to use concealed or semi-concealed connections to achieve architectural requirements or to provide fire resistance.

Gloucester Gateway Services

For beam-to-beam and beam-to-column connections, steel dowels or countersunk bolts can be concealed by recessing the head of the fastener and filling the recess with a glued-in timber plug or covered board. Banish Industry Mistakes (BIM) No strangers to the use of BIM – B & K Structures now applies this technology to every project. The use of BIM technology and CNC machines ensures enhanced accuracy so that structures are manufactured to exacting tolerances, assuring that the details of the connections are precise - eliminating errors onsite. All connections must be designed to effectively transfer the imposed loads. The detailing must also address the aesthetic and serviceability requirements of the connection, for example limiting rotation in a moment-resisting connection. The principles of timber connection design are: • Transfer loads in compression bearing wherever possible • Allow for dimensional changes in glulam due to potential in-service moisture cycling • Avoid the use of details that induce tension perpendicular to grain stresses in a member • Avoid moisture entrapment at connections • Do not place engineered timber in direct contact with masonry or concrete • Design the joints to minimise eccentricity in the connection • Minimise exposure of end grain

New methods of fixing COMAR ARCHITECTURAL ALUMINIUM SYSTEMS The University of Birmingham’s new Chamberlain Hall Student Accommodation is an impressive example of regeneration which is in keeping with the landscape as well as providing all essential capacity growth for the future. Consisting of 2 linked tall towers at 17 at & 21 stories and 5 “finger” blocks. Feasibility studies indicated that to increasing the density could not be achieved with the existing floor-plan therefore a new building was commissioned. The design concept was to maintain the links to the previous building tower yet create a design that was modern, light; creating a place where students would want to live, socialise and study.

DOORS, WINDOWS, ROOFLIGHTS & GLAZING 13 Making the façade work and integrate with all the cladding elements involved Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems designing new methods of fixing. The flush façade was a must and all the elements: Comar Glazing, Mesh and Copper panels needed to integrate. One of the engineering challenges on the project was the connection of the perforated copper cladding panels to the Comar 6EFT curtain walling. This connection had a few considerations, such as the metals being at opposite ends of the galvanic table, aesthetic demands, thermal performance and the structural considerations of loading panels to Comar 6EFT curtain walling Continental Installations worked closely with Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems and main contractor Balfour Beatty on the complex façade. The team designed a bespoke capping profile which was extruded with reenforced walls capable of fixing the copper panels directly to it. A heavy duty pressure plate with a fixing port arrangement, was used to mechanically fix the capping to the pressure plate. Subsequent regular fixings then transmitted the applied loads back to the rear structural mullion member to ensure there was no thermal

bridging. All connections were fully isolated to prevent bi-metallic corrosion. This bespoke design then included inward full height opening windows which sat behind the façade, Comar 5Pi Advanced Tilt/Turn open in windows were selected. These windows were perfect for the application as they offer slim sight-lines, thus maximising daylighting as well as the profiles themselves have thicker walls that provide robustness and large spans to ensure they stand the test of time. On the window elements Comar 5Pi Advanced Tilt/Turn open in windows were selected. These tilt/turn windows are perfect for the application, they offer slim sight-lines to maximise daylights as well as the profiles themselves have wide wall thicknesses that provide robustness to ensure they stand the test of time. The future trends in housing identified by Reynaers at Home architect survey Industry professionals have shared their predictions for the future of residential architecture in a national survey from Reynaers at Home. The majority of respondents said that sustainability was high on the agenda for the houses of tomorrow. Looking at the current industry, architects agreed that energy efficiency is still a critical consideration when designing a project, with 48% of respondents citing it as the most popular trend.

When asked “What does the future hold for housing design?” almost half said more affordable homes for the younger population. More than one in 10 also said that tech-based solutions for smaller spaces will be a prominent future trend. Architects predicted that there will be more properties built to meet energy demands and budgets for all ages, with a focus on flexibility and functionality supported by innovative design and quality. One architect said: “The future in housing design needs more affordable housing for all ages, but there’s not the political will to make this happen. Too many people are heavily invested in the inflated housing market.” Maximising space and light were mentioned as key trends for the future, as well as amenities and space planning, cost-effective repetitive grid facades and floating corners with bifold or sliding doors below. Compared with Reynaers at Home’s 2013 survey, there was a 12% collective increase in popularity for panoramic window walls, bifold doors and floating ceiling corners. A clear effort is emerging to streamline residential architecture into a landscape of sustainable, affordable and efficient homes which maximise space, light and energy usage. Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager at Reynaers, said: “It’s fantastic to see that as an industry we are looking towards the future. Architects care about the people using their buildings, as well as the world around them. “Architecture is about creating something that provides an excellent functional space for those who live there, and one that will stand the test of time. This sits in line with Reynaers at Home’s key values, as our product range of aluminium doors and windows boasts fantastic sustainability credentials. “Reynaers’ products can contribute to the overall sustainability level of the building, thus achieving points for building certificates such as LEED and BREEAM. These certify that a building is designed and built to surpass national standards for a range of factors including energy savings, CO2 emission reductions and sensitivity to their impact.

“The range also offers good value due to its long term high performance and energy efficiency levels, reducing residents’ energy bills and the need for maintenance or replacement.” Website: Enquiry No. 218

18 DOORS & WINDOWS, ROOFLIGHTS & GLAZING GEZE UK’s entrance is a work of art

When the Whitworth, part of The University of Manchester, launched an architectural competition for its extension, it wanted a design that would make its important collection accessible to a wider range of visitors and re-establish the relationship with its grounds, home of England’s first gallery in a park. GEZE UK were chosen to create an automatic entrance to ensure that the building – and therefore the art - is accessible to all. The new glass entrance connects the gallery to the surrounding park and features two sets of sliding glass doors powered by GEZE’s Slimdrive SL NT automatic operators. The doors have been positioned directly opposite each other to create a lobby. This contributes to sustainability by ensuring heat loss and gain is minimised without limiting accessibility. Members see ‘Belgium doors’ making a comeback

As in the fashion world, architecture tends to be cyclical; UK designers have revisited everything over the years from Tudor beams to vertical tile hanging. Steel windows, for their part, have remained an enduring element in both domestic and commercial buildings due to their slim sight-lines combined with rugged performance and they too are subject to trends in styles and application. Most recently members of the Steel Window Association have reported a resurgence in the popularity of steel framed entrance screens and partitions: normally featuring a pair of double doors flanked by fixed lights, and referred to as Belgium Doors. ‘Order…Order’… in the transformation of a Courthouse to a sumptuous 5* Boutique Hotel Once a building where judges passed sentences and the police investigated crimes. A Grade II Listed Magistrates Court and Police Station on Old Street, has now been converted into a 5* boutique hotel. Built in 1903 by John Butler, Old Street Courthouse was a formidable building. To change this Grade II Listed building into a hotel, careful consideration had to be given to find ways to improve the thermal performance as well as reducing noise from the streets outside. As the building is Listed, the original primary windows could not be removed; Selectaglaze was approached to provide a solution. A total of 106 units were installed including curved, raked and a beautiful double floor height feature window which was 5.287m high and 2.045m in width. Secondary glazing is an independent window installed on the room side of a building, a reduction of 45dB is achievable when there is a gap of 100mm between the primary and

secondary, heat loss can also be reduced by up to 50%. As it is a reversible adaptation, it is accepted by most heritage bodies. “Trends change all the time and right now more and more consumers are wanting to step away from the high shine that chrome offers and prefer a more muted style which perfectly complements cookware and kitchen appliances often found in brushed textures,” said Mike Johnson, washroom market manager for Pegler Yorkshire. Enquiry No.226

Brushed Nickel Trends in UK Market Place The company behind innovative and traditional brassware designs, Francis Pegler, has launched a range of brushed nickel taps to satisfy consumer demand. Successful kitchen designs encompass a range of finishes and textures to provide a harmonious space. And with the plethora of taps on the market manufacturers such as Francis Pegler are listening to consumers, taking note of trends and developing a range of finishes to support demand. The new brushed nickel range from Francis Pegler embodies the most popular designs in the portfolio including the Adorn, Strata, Rune and

Chef. Varying in shape and style these taps provide elegant fashion through to contemporary chic designs. The Adorn for example, is a symphony of circles, cylinders and curves that encompass a wide diameter spout with a distinct pencil like single lever control. In contrast the Chef is classified as the ‘professional’. A rugged versatile mixer tap boasting a sturdy spring assisted flexible spray hose. Its elongated arc makes sure this is an imposing yet stylish addition to kitchens with larger sinks or where the tap is a centre piece. Mike continued: “A tap can be the centre piece of a kitchen and is

therefore integral in complementing the finished look. Our new range of brushed nickel taps are designed to offer more choice to consumers and help them achieve a more coordinated look through complementing accessories or alternatively, stand out as a focal point!” The complete Francis Pegler kitchen portfolio boasts 60 styles all of which benefit from being manufactured to the highest European standards and come with a minimum five year guarantee. Flowcrete has worked with the innovative fashion designer Monki to provide flooring for its Hong Kong store that would convey the brand’s colourful, vibrant and youthful image.

Monki Strikes Gold with its Flowcrete Floor The fashion label’s interior designer chose two tailor-made styles for the store, a glittering gold and a sleek, dappled silver and black. The stylised flooring systems were applied next to each other across the retail outlet’s floor to create contrasting blocks of colour. Curving lines were used to separate the colours, creating not only an interesting aesthetic effect but also serving the practical purpose of marking out different areas of the store. The glossy, light and dark patterned silver coating was installed in the entrance and changing room areas while the majority of the shop floor itself was coated in a solid swathe of the dazzling gold.

Enquiry No.234

200m2 of the smooth and sparkling epoxy resin floor finish Flowflake Kristalina from Flowcrete Hong Kong was used to achieve both of these

custom colours. This system was specified thanks to its aesthetics, versatile design potential and its ability to provide the functionality required within a busy commercial environment. 200m2 of the fast-drying floor screed Isocrete 1500 was also installed during the project to provide a hardwearing underlayment for the resin floor finish. This design created a luxurious aesthetic that would serve as the ideal backdrop for Monki’s eclectic and lively line of high-end fashion. The bespoke look and attention to detail would reinforce the store’s identity for existing customers while ensuring that new customers leave with a great first impression. The seamlessness of the decorative epoxy system Flowflake Kristalina means that it can be quickly and easily cleaned to keep the floor area looking

its best. Flowflake Kristalina’s hardwearing nature also avoids scratches, scuffs and stains so that the floor retains an unblemished and attractive appearance for the long term, despite the inevitable heavy foot traffic, impacts and spillages that it will face. The entire flooring project took only five days to complete. It was critical that the tight installation deadline was met, as the high rental rates and the fact that other trades had to be accommodated meant that no aspect of the store fit-out could overrun. Thanks to the applicability of the products and the expertise of Flowcrete Hong Kong’s approved applicator, the floor was ready on time for the unveiling of Monki’s new store. Bostik cures Hope Health Centre’s flooring requirements

Bostik’s Laybond Pressure Sensitive adhesive was then used to adhere the vinyl floor coverings. Technical support: As it was running throughout the winter months, the project provided OSS with some challenging working conditions. Bostik’s wide product and service offering, including analytical support and on-site testing, was therefore a key driver in winning the project. The company’s technical team conducted a site visit, including moisture testing, prior to the installation of the new floor. This indicated that moisture levels in the screed were well above 75% relative humidity, so the use of a surface damp proof membrane (DPM) was recommended.

A range of subfloor preparation and adhesive products from Bostik have been chosen by OSS Commercial Flooring Ltd for the development of a new health centre, which serves the communities of Hope and Caergwrle in Flintshire, North-West Wales. Following a technical survey by Bostik, OSS Commercial Flooring selected the company’s Screedmaster One Coat Membrane to protect the new floor coverings from subfloor moisture. Bostik’s Screedmaster Universal Primer was then applied to the surface membrane, before the Screedmaster Flow and Ultimate smoothing compounds were floated out to a 3mm thickness in various areas of the development.

David Caldwell, Managing Director of OSS commented: “Having used them on a number of previous projects, we were confident in the quality of Bostik’s products. However, it was Bostik’s team of technical experts that really added value to this job. They were pro-actively offering technical advice, measurement surveys and the ideal product package in the build up to the install. The value added by these additional practices cannot be underestimated; it really gave us an added sense of security as to when we could proceed with the job.”

James Stacey, Floor Layer for OSS added: “Bostik’s advice to use a surface DPM meant we could suppress the residual moisture quickly. This allowed us to install the vinyl floor coverings throughout the new building, safe in the knowledge that moisture would not be able to compromise their performance.” Specialist products: When the Screedmaster One Coat Membrane had cured, a uniform coating of Screedmaster Universal Primer was applied to enhance interaction between the subfloor and the smoothing compound. “Screedmaster Flow was deemed the most appropriate smoothing compound in the large reception area because of its excellent workability and flow characteristics, which made it quick and easy to use,” said James. “In other areas we used Screedmaster Ultimate, which has exceptional curing characteristics, meaning we had a high quality finish throughout on which to bond the vinyl floor coverings.” For further information on the extensive range of subfloor preparation and adhesive products available from Bostik, please email or call 01785 272625.

Under-floor heating was present on both levels of the development, which made the testing more complex, but Bostik was on hand to provide advice throughout the process.

Rangers FC manager Ally McCoist, TV presenter Lorraine Kelly and comedian Andy Cameron were also patrons of the appeal. As a new build the project needed some 2000m2 of high quality flooring that would not only look stunning, but would also stand up to the rigours of daily use. A mixture of Gerflor’s Taralay Impression Comfort, Creation 70 Luxury Vinyl Tile and Planks and Tarasafe™ Ultra H²O, together with products from their SPM handrails was specified. GERFLOR

Marmox Thermoblock specified for low energy extension to Kent School The construction of a new extension to the teaching facilities at Glebe School in West Wickham, Kent, has featured the use of 140 mm wide Thermoblock units manufactured by Marmox Limited, specified to carry the main structural envelope of the two-storey building. The incorporation of Thermoblocks at the wall-floor junction results in the virtual elimination of the heat loss at this cold bridge. The new building will provide the secondary school with a number of facilities including an art-room, additional classrooms and new washrooms. Furthermore, as is common now in the education sector, the extension has been designed to achieve very good standards of energy consumption through high levels of insulation. Marmox Thermoblocks are ideally suited to this ‘Fabric First’ approach and are regularly used to address the problem of perimeter heat loss at both ground and upper floor levels in either timber frame or more traditional masonry construction. 30 HEATING, PLUMBING & VENTILATION BV Series provides compact response To DHW demand Locations such as pubs, restaurants and sports pavilions and all commercial buildings of similar size are proving to be popular applications for the Econoplate BV Series of semiinstantaneous hot water units, thanks to their responsive and high performance, compactness and lower capital cost compared to traditional solutions. The recently launched Econoplate BV Series presents specifiers with a wide choice of sizes and outputs to suit premises with modest plant room space and medium levels of hot water demand. These are met by combining one of the manufacturer’s long proven Econoplate plate heat exchangers with different sizes of storage vessel. Crucially, the hybrid unit takes up less space than installing a separate Econoplate PHE, and could typically cut capital cost by £2K or more. STOKVIS

No Limescale, Minimal Maintenance: 22mm KalGUARD cleans up Preventing limescale in small commercial premises, such as restaurants and take-away outlets, is now easier than ever thanks to the 22mm KalGUARD device from Sentinel Commercial. A true ‘plug and play’ solution, the 22mm KalGUARD usually takes less than a day to install and lasts for up to 12 years – with minimal maintenance throughout, no water wastage, and no expenditure on consumables. The 22mm KalGUARD is the smallest device in the KalGUARD range, which is independently and scientifically-proven to prevent limescale in secondary and ‘once through’ hot water systems, and thus helps to protect against the damaging and expensive effects of limescale build-up, such as poor water flow, increased energy consumption, boiler breakdown, repairs and premature replacements of system components and appliances. KalGUARD works by permanently ‘conditioning’ water via an electrolytic process, a method that is recommended by UK Building Services Compliance Guide to Part L. When fitted on a rising main, WRASapproved KalGUARD provides whole-system protection, and can help protect both new and existing systems from limescale buildup. The 22mm KalGUARD system comprises a zinc anode unit, water meter and controller, with the latter pre-set to a 22mm commissioning mode. After installation, a twice-annual service is recommended. OMNIE for Sutton Coldfield House

The entire ground floor of the property in Sutton Coldfield, close to parkland and a popular golf course, now benefits from the installation of the Omnie ClipPlate underfloor heating network. The rooms served include the spacious lounge, kitchen, family room, dining room, utility, hall, cloakroom and a guest suite.

The very detailed layout provides guidance on both distribution routes and individual room patterns. In total, over 1500 metres of the rugged, 16 mm diameter polybutylene pipes were laid into the preformed upstands of the ClipPlate panels, and connected back to two custom built, eight port Omnie manifolds. These are located adjacent to the utility room and cloakroom, allowing the individual zones to be isolated during commissioning and balancing.

Energy efficient underfloor heating

Schlüter®-BEKOTEC-THERM is a low height, energy-efficient and quickreacting modular underfloor heating assembly. This system can be used in new build and renovation projects, and it is a greener choice with economical, energy saving properties.

The refurbishment of a substantial private house in one of the Midlands’ most popular areas has underlined not just the versatility and performance capabilities of the underfloor heating systems available from Omnie, but also the comprehensive design support available from one of the sector’s most eminent manufacturers.

It’s low supply temperature of approximately 30°C, compared to between 50-55°C in some traditional systems, means Schlüter®-BEKOTECTHERM is extremely effective both with conventional heat generation methods and regenerative energy sources, such as ground and air source heat pumps. Since the thinner screed requires much less material, the final construction is lighter and lower than traditional screed installations, saving considerable construction time.

How to specify a lasting, energy efficient underfloor heating system that is quick to install.

When it comes to screed systems and solutions, an integrated solution, where products are designed and manufactured to complement each other is the key to a lasting, successful flooring installation. That’s why SchlüterBEKOTEC and BEKOTEC-THERM really stand out from the crowd because as a system installation, it comes with a five year covering and assembly warranty or

staples or other clips; with the individual runs of pipe being rapidly pressed into place before testing and the laying of the finished screed. The panels interlock and protect the pipes from being displaced or damaged by other trades working in the area or from floating up as the screed is laid and finished. The panels are also available with integral insulation to enhance the thermal performance of the completed floor structure. WEB: Enquiry No.245.

The Schlüter Approved Installer Network is new for 2016 and allows approved installers, who have completed full training with Schlüter, to install the system. The network not only gives accreditation to the individual as an expert but also to the company as a certified organisation. This provides reassurance to you as the specifier or architect that the system will be installed to the manufacturer’s standards and best practice and minimises installation risks, ensuring a quick and reliable installation. Another introduction for 2016 is the new range of thermostat and control modules introduced for Schlüter®BEKOTEC-THERM. The new generation of room sensors and control modules for the system significantly increases the flexibility and convenience of regulating the temperature of the room.

Heraklith roof board respecified for restoration of Richard Rogers House A detailed refurbishment project to conserve an architecturally significant residential property is making use of a special composite woodwool board from the range supplied by Marmox Limited to ensure not just the integrity of the work, but also the building’s long term performance. Completed in the late sixties, the property features extensive glazed elevations and a flat roof of minimal depth, where the designer of such iconic structures as Lloyds insurance offices in the City of London, chose to employ Heraklith woodwool “Roof Board” to help regulate humidity levels within the occupied space. Basically the depth of the roof did not

provide sufficient space for ventilation and instead Rogers specified the special grade woodwool board to absorb moisture from the air when humidity levels are high. But then when the air is dry, it will release moisture back into the air. This keeps the room humidity constant and comfortable, while also reducing the risk of surface condensation which can lead to mould growth. In fact the Roof Board was manufactured specifically for this project, incorporating timber slats to provide additional strengthen and allow them to sit unsupported above the ceiling. MARMOX Enquiry No.253

Unusually shaped, the architecturally stunning Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen in Scotland is designed to assist in the psychological and emotional healing process for those affected by cancer. A Licensed Icynene contractor installed both Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and Icynene H2 Foam LiteTM in the pebble-shaped structure. Situated on the southern boundary of the Foresterhill site of the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen, Scotland, Maggie’s Cancer Centre is the latest such centre to provide emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer.

The centre, designed to be homely and full of warmth, aims to provide an environment where those facing cancer can gain support. The centre also intends to inspire imagination from visitors and has contributed to the architecture of the Aberdeen city area. The Design: Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, together with Scottish firm, Halliday Fraser Munro, took on the challenge to create a visually stunning structure in the shape of a pebble. The unusually-shaped single storey structure features a reinforced concrete exterior and timber interior. Steel reinforcements were used to form the structure’s unique shape. With activity and meeting rooms located on the ground floor and office space on the mezzanine, the centre features high-end interior finishes and manages to create a peaceful, welcoming and beautiful space for anyone who visits. Insulating Maggie’s Cancer Centre: A Licensed local Icynene contractor was enlisted by Halliday Fraser Munro to help insulate the centre in February 2013 using two high performance Icynene spray foam insulation products. The spray foam insulation crew used five sets of the 100% water-blown closed cell medium density Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and used seven sets of the open

cell Icynene H2Foam LiteTM throughout the curved structure. Spray foam crews applied the medium- density material on the lower part of the structure to a height of 2.5m in an effort to provide additional structural strength. Being 100% water blown, Icynene H2Foam ForteTM has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 1 - the lowest GWP available. In additional to providing structural strength, the closed cell product also can reject bulk water penetrating through the building envelope.

Ten Storey Love Song for state of the art P.A.P.A. solution

With more people choosing to live and work in city centres, the number of high rise builds is increasing at a great rate. With companies developing innovative technology to account for this increase, advances in drainage and ventilation pipework now means that secondary vent pipework systems, which are primarily used in high rise buildings, to manage air circulation in drainage systems can be replaced with an alternate system of control. Enquiry No.256

regime, there is an alternate method to control air fluctuations in a drainage stack.

Here, Ian Crickmore, Technical Director at Polypipe Terrain, explains how traditional secondary vented stack systems are no longer the only option. Research, conducted by New London Architecture and GL Hearn in 2015, shows tall building construction in London is up by 56%, with 117 approved schemes and 263 new buildings in the pipeline. In order to service this demand, installers, specifiers, and architects within the plumbing and drainage industry need to be aware of the most contemporary technology available. Whilst traditional design standards recommend that a secondary ventilation stack must be incorporated into drainage design to manage the air

The non-regular flow of water through drainage pipework in tall building’s causes positive and negative air fluctuations, which in turn can compromise appliance water trap seals. Whilst the system is in use, it is necessary to mitigate these changes in air pressure as close to the point of source, in order to maintain a state of equilibrium in a drainage pipework system. This response time is critical for protecting water trap seals, with traditional secondary pipework systems thought to be the only way to provide this function. This traditional method has its limitations in terms of system responsiveness. This is due to the time lag that occurs when communicating a change in the ambient airflow in the pipework, and the time it takes for air to flow to the point of need, which can result in non performing drainage

systems. With 263 towers proposed to be built in London, and 70 under construction in 2016, contractors will be aware of the paramount importance that the most effective drainage method is installed. One alternative to using a secondary ventilation piping system is through the installation of air regulatory valves. An attenuator valve significantly reduces the effects of positive pressure and AAV’s (Air Admittance Valves) allow air into a system under negative air pressure, allowing multi storey building designers to simplify their design of sanitary waste systems. Removing the need of a secondary vent also reduces the drainage pipework system footprint. This, in turn, allows for greater flexibility in the layout and design of internal drainage systems for engineers, architects and design professionals. This increased flexibility means that building designs, as well as room layouts, are no longer dictated by strict pipework systems. Web:

The wood filler I applied previously was already starting to blow, making the shed’s aesthetics appear tatty and vulnerable to water leaks. OSMO UK

Low cost solution to slippery decking Wooden decking can become hazardous in damp and slippery conditions, creating the possible threat of a slips or falls for anyone walking across the surface. Outside areas where people gather need to be made safe to comply with health and safety issues. FibreGrid has come up with a solution to this problem with the development of Anti Slip Standard GRP Decking Strips, part of their affordable GRP SlipGrip® Standard range. Timber decking becomes safer with these quick and easy to install DeckGrip Strips, which come supplied with decking screws and are pre-drilled. Available in lengths of 1200mm and 2400mm and widths of 50mm and 90mm, these decking strips are ideal for most decking areas and walkways. They are designed with a chamfered edge to provide additional safety which reduces any possibility of trips and falls. Unlike other products, no glue is required to install the product. From an aesthetics view point, given the choice of widths available, DeckGrip Strips are able to compliment existing decking areas by making a feature of the Strips against the timber substrate. Working in perfect harmony

Helvar has supplied a sophisticated lighting control system to the largest cruise ship ever built, Harmony of the Seas, owned and operated by Royal Caribbean International. Royal Caribbean boasts innovative features including the Ultimate Abyss, a thrilling slide – 10 stories high – that is the tallest at sea; robot bartenders, virtual balconies with real-time views of the destination for interior rooms, and VOOM – the fastest internet at sea.

The existing Helvar lighting control installations have performed so well that it was an easy decision for system integrator Wärtsilä FUNA and Royal Caribbean to specify the Helvar system for Harmony of the Seas, its latest and largest ship. “Using Helvar lighting control was a simple decision for us,” says Andreas Köhler of Wärtsilä FUNA. “Harmony of the Seas is like a floating city, so we needed a lighting control solution that is simple to install and gives us all the capabilities we need on a project of this

size and complexity. We have worked with Helvar on a number of Royal Caribbean projects and always found them a fantastic partner. The customer support is also second to none, which can be very important on challenging projects.” Using Helvar technology across its fleet of ships meant that Royal Caribbean was able to feel confident that the lighting control system would work smoothly and that there would be consistency across the fleet. For Wärtsilä FUNA, the key was also familiarity; the team knew from past experience they could rely on Helvar’s superior lighting control to provide dependable performance and deliver exactly what was needed in a challenging installation. Wärtsilä FUNA also knew that it could rely on Helvar’s fantastic customer service for help with

brilliantly intense, bright white light, offering a truly remarkable lifespan of the chip when compared to a normal incandescent bulb. With CREE LEDs efficiency levels, the torch products built with CREE technology achieve brighter light for a much longer period of time, meaning the torch will use smaller and fewer batteries than a standard torch, with CREE LED lifespans estimated to be around 100,000 hours. Exceptional Brightness at the Click of a Button New for 2016 the 250 Lumens Spotlight packs a real punch.

With its unique handle for precise torch light positioning, the 250 lumens Spotlight will light up the darkest corners with its brilliant bright white light. The incredible lighting range of 300 metres and up to 100 hours of

any issues that arose during the project. The sheer size of Harmony of the Seas presented a significant challenge to Wärtsilä FUNA. The ship carries thousands of light fixtures across luxury suites, bars, restaurants, and outdoor spaces, and each individual fixture had to be managed by a lighting control system. A vast array of LED luminaires from different suppliers were used to light the different areas of Harmony of the Seas, which was a challenge in itself to Wärtsilä FUNA and Helvar. Helvar’s control system had to manage spotlights, pendants and track lighting alongside many other types of luminaires, providing the total flexibility Wärtsilä FUNA needed to work with all these different light fixtures.

The Panel Challenge Tips for a painless LED panel refurbishment from Andrew Gooding, Technical and Compliance Manager at Integral LED Replacing fluorescent fixtures with low-energy LED panels makes a significant reduction of business overheads. However, specifiers of office lighting must remain alert to the rapid pace of advances in LED panel technology. For instance, in the last year alone, Integral LED panels have effectively halved the power input required to produce the same output of light. As the Technical Manager and the person in charge of Integral’s in-house lighting laboratory, I would like to offer some guidance to builders and developers looking to roll-out an LED lighting refurbishment. The following pointers are based on feedback from our team, our client installers, and end users over the last twelve months. Efficiency is key When reviewing LED panels, more light doesn’t always mean more power. Just like cars - you can have highly efficient, high-tech models that will save massively on fuel compared to inefficient petrol guzzling models. This is also true for LED panels where older, less efficient technology often drives “inexpensive” panels. However, unlike the world of motoring, variations in performance between panels can be very marked. At Integral, our most efficient panel offers 44% energy savings over other typical LED panels on the market. Beware; whilst you may seek to save by buying “budget” panels at installation, you will effectively lose hundreds of pounds in cost savings over the lifetime of the luminaire. Additionally, businesses are motivated to maximise efficiency in the interests of qualifying for

carbon reduction schemes or an Enhanced Capital Allowance. For instance, a typical office fitting ten Integral 25W LED panels is set to save an estimated £269.12 per year, equivalent to 1033.2 Kg of CO2. Hence, the refit of an office may qualify for an ECA which allows businesses to set 100% of the cost of energy-saving assets against taxable profits in a single tax year. Use Over-lighting to your advantage When approaching an office refurbishment, we recommend that our customers conduct a comprehensive review of the prospective lighting scheme. Whether this is conducted by a lighting designer or a simple ‘Relux’ survey, the specification of the lumen output of your LED panel is crucial when replacing existing fluorescent units. Typically, an existing 600 x 600 louvered luminaire using T8 lamps will output 3240 lumens and drain 88W of power (including ballast). Choosing an equivalent light output is one path, alternatively, utilising the innate flexibility of the grid ceiling, customers often opt to use fewer panels to match existing levels of light. Combine the energy saving benefit of a power drop to 25W per panel and a reduction in the number of luminaires, and your lighting refit is set to contribute major savings to the bottom line.

engineering logic determines that the most efficient luminaire allows light to travel the shortest distance to its target and through the least amount of material - in terms of optics and diffusers. Side-lit panels work by bending the light 90 degrees through a ‘light guide plate’, a series of printed of etched dots that bounce the horizontal light downward. Hence, the light travels up to 20 times further through a diffuser in an edgelit panel compared to the relatively unencumbered light generated by a back-lit unit. The low profile design of an edge-lit panel is considered fashionable by some and offers a neat solution to shallow voids in suspended ceilings. However, edge-lit trails backlit technology in the race for higher efficiency. Powerconscious lighting schemes that aim to maximise savings will select back-lit panels exclusively. Specifying LED panels can leave you with a real conundrum – more light or more savings? Having accurate data available is critical to making the correct specification for a refurbished lighting scheme. Seek the best lumens performance backed up with a reliable product specification and a satisfactory outcome is practically assured. Whatever your decision, it's likely to put a smile on your client’s face.

Choosing Back and Sides LED panel design has taken two distinct paths; backlit and side-lit luminaires determined by the positioning of the LED light source. Ultimately, pure
