Oriental-Inspired Textiles & Homeware from Vallila Japanese culture, nature and wildlife form the inspiration behind many of the designs in Vallila's A/W16 collection 'Instincts'. The new designs feature atmospheric images of Japanese nature and are inspired by cultural traditions. Innovative designs include Japanese Ikebana floral art and exquisite illustrative plant patterns, with delicate lines and asymmetric forms. Vallila introduces a new Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer collection each year including approximately 50 new fabric designs. The collections are designed entirely in-house at Vallila’s headquarters in Helsinki by four Finnish designers: Tanja Orsjoki, Matleena Issakainen, Riina Kuikka and Saara Kurkela. The full Vallila collection consists of a large variety of soft furnishings such as fabrics, rugs, ready-made curtains, cushion covers, kitchen textiles, bed linen and shower curtains. Their vibrant colours and bold designs also extend to wallpaper collections, mugs and tote bags. Vallila is a leading Scandinavian brand of contemporary printed fabrics, rugs and home accessories. Since the company was launched in

1935, it has been recognised as a trendsetter in Scandinavian design with its bold and playful collection, inspired by the extraordinary Finnish landscape, heritage, and way of life.

SE Controls feels the power with Bristol’s Electricity House development Electricity House, Crest Nicholson Homes’ stylish city centre apartment development in Bristol is using an advanced smoke ventilation system from leading smoke and natural ventilation specialist, SE Controls, to help keep residents safe if a fire should occur. Originally designed by acclaimed architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1930s, the six-storey Grade II listed building has being converted into 85 luxury apartments, while ensuring that many of the original design features are retained or reinstated to enhance its art deco style. The building’s main atrium is at the heart of the SE Controls solution, as the smoke ventilation system is designed to vent smoke from the atrium in the event of a fire to ensure escape routes are kept clear. To achieve this, SE Controls designed, installed and commissioned the system, which comprises 37 SHEVTEC® automatically

controlled louvres, which are manufactured and tested in accordance with BS EN 12101: 2. The SHEVTEC® louvres also incorporate ‘fall protection’ to increase safety, as well as using IP rated external motors, which are essential to allow easy access for future maintenance. A further 21 low level air inlet louvres and linear door actuators also form part of the system, all of which are controlled by a series of OS2 control panels with integral battery back up and fully compliant with the relevant sections of the BS EN 12101 standard. SE Controls’ Business Development Manager, Stuart Coote, commented: “Electricity House is a landmark building designed by an iconic British architect, so we’re delighted to have played a part in this project.

THE EVOLUTION OF LIGHT STEEL FRAME Project Profile - The Sir David Attenborough Building collaboration founded in 2007 between Cambridge University and nine biodiversity conservation organisations. As a leading innovator in light gauge steel construction, specialising in design, manufacture and supply of a wide range of steel solutions for the offsite market - EOS Facades were appointed to engineer and supply the framing system for this project totalling over 725m2 steel.

A major refurbishment and renovation of an iconic landmark in the heart of Cambridge – the building formerly known as the Arup Tower, is the result of a collaboration between the University of Cambridge and the Museum of Zoology. The Sir David Attenborough Building, as it is now known, reinvigorates this iconic building. The driving force behind this £58 million facelift is the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, a strategic

EOS were selected not just for the company’s ISO9001 accreditation, but their ability to use leading edge technology to design and precision engineer pre-assembled CE Marked steel solutions to meet the bespoke requirements. This project highlights how the effective use of an offsite manufactured steel system has provided true value to not only for the project delivery team, but also the end users including students, staff & the wider community. The aim of the Sir David Attenborough building is to act as a collaborative hub

for the conservation community, providing a focal point for research and increase understanding of conservation biodiversity. Whilst the building retained the original 500-seat lecture hall and a proportion of the upstairs laboratories, this renovation has allowed for the building to function in other capacities. The project provides a significant extension of the Museum of Zoology, including a space for the museum’s beloved finback whale skeleton at its entrance, and has provided a new home for the Cambridge Conservation Initiative. The principal challenge in carrying out the refurbishment of such a well-known structure has been how to achieve this whilst preserving the architectural integrity of Sir Philip Dowson’s design. EOS Facades were able to provide value engineered solutions which were sympathetic to the sensitive architectural redevelopment. Sustainability was also a key priority for this refurbishment. EOS Facades

The refurbishment presented various challenges not least the condition of the existing concrete frame which is approximately 45 years old. EOS Facades were heavily involved from the outset of the project inspecting every aspect of the site to ensure they could determine the most viable solution and appreciate the on-site tolerances. For the main exterior walls, a new cladding system was installed which required tightly co-ordinated placement of EOS studs with a large quantity of horizontal noggins as fixing points. This process was replicated for the narrower, more recessed walls. For the vitrine wall, oversailing SFS was installed to the existing internal staircore using bespoke bracketry. SFS infill was also used on the large external wall of the new whale skeleton enclosure. Possibly the most impressive focal point of the project – the ‘living wall’ was one of the most challenging aspects of this refurbishment. EOS value-engineered a 20-metre-tall framing system to support the heavy weight of the plants. Heavy duty bracketry together with SFS infill and vertically placed edge lattices provided the support required to achieve this structure. The lattice beams were engineered offsite and delivered fully assembled, ready for installation. EOS Facades offer an all-inclusive fixed price package, supplied with proprietary brackets and fixings required - meaning delivery is on time and guarantees that all issues are resolved at the factory and are controlled by the dedicated team at EOS Facades under ISO9001 certified quality management systems.

Sun Control system enhances London development

Customers at a café that was built as part of a plush canalside residential development in East London can enjoy a comfortable atmosphere in which to sip their flat white, thanks to a bespoke Hunter Douglas motorised Sun Control system. The international leader in architectural building products was commissioned by London-based architects Jestico +

Whiles to provide a 147m2 Sun Control System with horizontal sliding-folding shutters because it was the only company that could produce the kind of motorised shutters required. The stylish café on the ground floor of the Telford Homes Boathouse development in Cotall Lane, close to the Limehouse Cut canal, needed a smart-looking and well-designed,

robust sun control system to enhance the façade while providing highly effective sun protection. Hunter Douglas manufactured and supplied a tailor-made folding shutter system that comprises individual panels that are interconnected by hinges. Set in a 40mm x 60mm frame and constructed using extruded aluminium profiles, the individual shutters are connected to each other to create either V or W folding elements. The advanced motorised mechanism allows the shutters to fold completely flat when they are closed. Juliette Halliday, National Sales Manager for Hunter Douglas Architectural Products, said the design of the shutters means that they cleverly slide in the top and bottom rails, while folding or unfolding at the same time. The shutter was supplied with an infill of laser-cut aluminium sheet, which was fixed mechanically by pop rivets, providing the necessary stability and strength.

It takes a long time to create perfection.

Once in a while a product comes along and changes everything, from the way it’s crafted to the way it works. Products are often copied and many are great ideas that never really see true success in their application. Many years are spent searching for a product that will ultimately surpass expectations, stand the test of time and become recognised as the leader in its field. We created one of those successful products nearly two decades ago and still today it has never been equalled. Why? Because we have never compromised on quality.

10 REFURBISHMENT & NEW BUILD

UltraScape's BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system has played a major role in helping to transform one of the UK's busiest train stations. Web: ultrascape.co.uk

UltraScape Helps to Deliver World Class Transport Hub The long awaited redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station has transformed what was previously a dark, overcrowded site with poor access for passengers, into a prestigious gateway to the UK's second city. Highlights include more space and better facilities for passengers, brighter and clearer platforms, a stunning new station facade and a grand concourse enclosed by a light filled atrium. Work was carried out by one of the UK's premier concrete frame contractors, MPB Structures Ltd. It included reinstating existing station platforms as well as installing new structures, hardscaping around the station perimeter and the creation of Birmingham's version of the 'Spanish Steps.'

The paving was installed using UltraScape's BS 7533 compliant ProBed HS fine bedding concrete, Flowpoint rapid setting grout and ProPrime slurry primer. Construction was carried out in difficult circumstances as the station was fully operational throughout the project. It is the busiest interchange station in the UK with trains

departing every 37 seconds and over 140,000 passengers passing through daily. UltraScape Flowpoint grout was ideal as its rapid setting properties enable areas to be open to foot traffic in just 1 hour, and vehicular traffic after only 4 hours, keeping downtime and disruption to a minimum. Simple to use, requiring only the addition of water on site, it is poured over the area and washed clean, filling all joints evenly, without staining. This slurry method provides an easy method of grouting large areas, quickly. The material is particularly suitable for use on irregular joints and can accommodate widths between 5mm and 50mm and depths of up to 200mm in a single pass. It is fast and efficient to apply, leaving a perfect stain free finish. UltraScape Pro-Bed HS provided a perfect bound base for the pavers. It can be laid up to 75mm in one pass, with greater depths achievable using successive layers. The fast strength gain of Pro-Bed HS allows pedestrian areas to be trafficked in as little as 12 hours. It is also available in 1 tonne bulk bags and 30 tonne silos, perfect for large pedestrianised or commercial

regeneration projects. UltraScape Pro-Prime was applied between the paving elements and bedding mortar. The addition of a slurry primer is essential to yield a bond strength compliant with BS 7533 and helps prevent costly failures, thus increasing the life expectancy of your paved area. UltraScape’s Flowpoint and Pro-Bed HS are also available in 'ECO' which is ideal for use on schemes looking to achieve distinctive environmental performance in their work and recognition from the CEEQUAL award scheme. Projects incorporating BS 7533 compliant materials benefit from a reduction in failures and considerable whole life cost savings. The materials have been independently and rigorously tested by UKAS accredited laboratories to assess their performance capabilities. This method removes the uncertainty of site batched mortars and offers a minimum construction life of 40 years.

Gutjahr are the inventors of the passive capillary AquaDrain® surface drainage system. Complete with ProFin® edge profiles, AquaDrain® drain grates and ProRin® guttering, the patented systems are simple to install and provide rapid, immediate and high volume drainage of water to protect the long term integrity of the assembly. Among the systems on offer from BAL include Thin Drainage Assembly for direct point adhesion for break-proof coverings, Standard Drainage Screed Assembly for the solid bed fixing of ceramic, porcelain and natural stone and concrete paving, and a Thin, Lighter Weight Drainage Screed Assembly with an epoxy screed for a strong but comparatively lightweight build-up compared to conventional systems. Both the Standard Drainage and Thin assemblies include the AquaDrain® passive capillary drainage mat which has a unique permeable mesh, raising the complete surface and offering a higher drainage volume compared to other drainage mortar and mat systems. With a collective 80 years of commercial tiling experience, incorporation of the Gutjahr range within the BAL portfolio ensures a guaranteed, full-system solution for external installations from the UK market-leader. UltraCrete Reduces Defects by 98% The UK’s largest water company is using UltraCrete’s flowable bedding system to reinstate manhole covers and frames across its network. United Utilities manages the water and waste network in North West England, this includes Cumbria, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles pass through its network on a daily basis and increasing traffic volumes are taking their toll on the road infrastructure as well as damaging the ductile ironwork within it. United Utilities sought a durable bedding system that would support the ironwork bearing the high traffic volumes. UltraCrete’s Envirobed HA104® compliant bedding and backfill mortar system provided the ideal solution. Firex Low Energy Smoke & Heat Alarms Kidde’s Firex range now offers safety plus sustainability, with low energy mains-powered smoke and heat alarms that cost less than £1 a year to run.

GEZE UK Enquiry No.401 www.mclink.co.uk/913-401

Ancon Teplo reaches new heights

Following recent fire tests at BRE Global, Ancon is pleased to confirm that its innovative basalt-fibre, low thermal conductivity wall ties, TeploBF and Teplo-L, offer 120 minute fire resistance, making them suitable for buildings of any height (subject to structural performance), in line with Building Regulations, Approved Document B. Officially accepting the BRE’s findings, the BBA has confirmed that the fire resistance of these ties will be updated from 60 to 120 minutes in the next issue of Ancon’s Agrément Certificate (14/5160, PS2 and PS3). This extended fire testing brings to an end the previous 18 metre building height restriction on these Teplo ties. ANCON Enquiry No.402 www.mclink.co.uk/913-402

Interconnected, mains-powered smoke and heat alarms with reliable power back-up should now be the norm for most housing to satisfy Building Regulations requirements and Code of Practice recommendations. To meet demands for sustainable, low-energy products, the latest Firex range provides much lower maximum mains consumption, with substantial energy savings over previous models and significantly lower running costs. Based on current energy tariffs (March 2016 average kWh cost from the UK’s top 5 suppliers, between £0.099/kWh and £0.109/kWh), it now costs less than £1 per year to operate a Firex alarm. Firex alarms can be interlinked to create a low-energy network for protection throughout the home. But they can also interconnect with Kidde’s 4MCO and 4MDCO mains-powered carbon monoxide alarms, using the unique ‘Smart Interconnect’ feature. Here, all the alarms sound when one is triggered with different, distinct alarm sounder patterns for carbon monoxide or fire – an essential facility. This is supported by different display messages on the 4MDCO model indicating ‘Fire’ or ‘CO’. So, without the need for any further operation of the system or

remote switches, Smart Interconnect automatically alerts occupants throughout the property of the specific hazard that confronts them. This allows them to respond quickly under challenging circumstances, making the right choice between very different actions for either fire or carbon monoxide incidents. Another important Firex innovation is the introduction of long-life lithium battery back-up options for all three sensing technologies (ionisation, optical and heat), alongside the usual loose battery and integral rechargeable battery versions. This innovation enables reliable back-up throughout the whole alarm life, without the need to change batteries, at a much lower price than rechargeable products. Halogen floodlights, once the holy grail of outdoor security lighting are on the way out.

Keeping ahead of the curve on outdoor LED lighting The EU (and we are still in it for now!) may have voted to push back the phase out of halogen lamps from the original 2016 target, but in practical terms the change has already happened for specifiers. The good news is that LED has stepped up to the plate with powerful, bright, lighting that provides all the coverage you need for hardcore security or courtesy lighting. the need to cater for the initial inrush current that LEDs experience on switching. After all, LEDs come with a 30,000-hour life expectancy, which means nothing if the circuitry behind the diodes might burn out after 10,000! Even though they are low energy, LEDs do generate heat and are susceptible to heat damage. At Timeguard we’ve always been well known for our sales of high-quality halogen flood lights, but we decided several years ago that LED is the name of the game now and stated investing in developing superior new products, not just LED versions of old designs. In fact, we like to think that our engineering and design efforts have given a big boost to creating trust in outdoor lighting among specifiers and installers. Engineering The bar was quite low when Timeguard started looking at LED flood lights. Our first move, of course, was to get a standard, but high quality model, on the shelves. Even then there were key differences from the pack: we insisted on quality componentry like drivers – the devices that smoothed out the current flow to LEDs – because we had realised that there was no bypassing

They are, after all, still delicate electronic components no matter how well protected they are by polycarbonate covers and lenses. So it is important that the heat can be dissipated or, once again, the life of the unit will be shortened. Designing in cooling fins should not be difficult – but it’s surprising how many other manufacturers’ models didn’t bother to allow for cooling. We paid attention to our choices of PIR detectors as well. We are well known as leaders in PIR detectors, we have the technical resources to test and rate our PIRs for use with LED lighting and once more it’s that inrush current that’s the challenge. If an installer sets up a master and slave light system, a single PIR can be switching as much as 140W of LED lighting and this can be achieved with confidence with Timeguard’s LED rated PIR detectors.

Fit for purpose Another early objection to LED for floodlighting is that it just wasn’t man enough for the job – I think that myth has been well and truly busted. Our 30W LED floodlight delivers the equivalent of 150W halogen at about 20% of the running costs. A more accurate measure of output is Lumen, of course, and here we are talking well over 2000 lumen. What’s more, that output will not degrade over time due to the use of high quality componentry. People also used to question the ability of LED to effectively flood an area with light, and that has been addressed with attention to the design of lens arrays, creating the wide beam coverage that we pioneered. We also saw no reason not to think outside the original box, and came up with super-compact floodlights with pan and tilt heads, offering a range attractive enough for use around the home as well as at commercial premises.

Bulkheads & step lights Bulkhead designs remain popular, and we’ve introduces slim but tough diecase models, and now offer a choice of interchangeable bezels including eyelids and cross bezels. LED technology and smart engineering has also enabled us to design ultra-slim step lights, very easy to install and with an appearance of a recessed luminaire, but they are totally surface mount installation – nice and easy! What’s next? The current big thing in LED is driverless technology, stripping out componentry and costs, and its good news all round and we were there in the early days with a high-quality option of a slim-line bulkhead and basic slim-line model. As you’d also expect, we’re now taking the opportunity to take this new technology to an even higher level and the next new range will soon be hitting the street!

Beauty as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. Making bold design statements can either work stunningly well, or backfire badly like a Damien Hirst shark suspended in formaldehyde. That said, there’s not really many design or architectural faux pas that affect the wonderful world of LVT. In most cases the designs now available deliver an eye-catching, on-trend selection of quality colours and textures that add both value and beauty to virtually any environment.

luxury vinyl designs. It’s a situation perfectly suited to Gerflor’s spectacular new Creation 55 range. Gerflor’s Creative Director Gino Venturelli commented, “There’s a new renaissance abounding for LVT in decoration, allowing all the classic materials to sublimate the aesthetics thanks to the contribution of creativity. The combination of these factors creates a fantastic economic and creative future for LVT...and in particular our Creation 55 range of products”

There’s no doubt that 2016 has seen a Luxury Vinyl Tile and Plank (LVT) resurgence leading to a much higher demand for this most ubiquitous of flooring products. For Gerflor it’s been a journey of discovery, passion and innovation leading to a zealous encounter with the creativity of old and new materials, matched only by a strong human contribution in “tuning” the aesthetics of wood, marble and stones through drawings, geometry, laser engraving, sandblasting and various inlays.

Gerflor’s Creation Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) collection produces some stunningly attractive new colours, designs, effects and formats. The Creation range provides cutting-edge designled, sustainable solutions for most contract and residential applications. Designed for medium traffic areas through to light commercial use is Gerflor’s LVT Creation 55 range. Creation 55 is a perfect match for moderate traffic areas in commercial environments including offices, hospitalities, restaurants, reception areas, boutiques and also housing. It has a 0.55 mm wear layer and is now available in 61 designs with 7 different sizes in tiles and planks.

All vinyl seems to be trending this year and it now appears to be the ‘big dog on the block’. Original, well thought-out vinyl designs are on a march, becoming one of the most popular and sought-after floors on the market, and this is in large part due to the newest

Discreet Domani joins Kährs collection Each of the seven Domani floors has a very individual look, spanning pearlescent ‘Chiaro’ to deep, dark ‘Scurro’. The rustic one-strip designs, in oak and hard maple, have a more discreet surface than most country timber grades, with fewer knots but lots of colour variation. Surfaces are softly brushed and handscraped to enhance the natural pigmentation. Combined with a hard wax oil finish, Domani provides a strong, natural appearance with great depth and a mellow lustre. All designs have a multi-layered construction, with a sustainable oak or hard maple surface layer and a fast-growing spruce/pine/poplar core. This ecofriendly, engineered format makes the floors more stable and is ideal for installation over underfloor heating.

Kährs has introduced its new Domani Collection of wood floors. The new collection includes seven designs, with a discreet contemporary-rustic grain and a hard wax oil finish. The new oak and maple floors are offered in a spectrum of natural colour tones, including chic white and grey tones, naturals and rich dark browns.

Triton extends liquid applied waterproofing range Triton has extended its range of liquid applied waterproofing products to offer a wider choice of systems primarily for the reliable waterproofing of roofs and podium decks. Each of the three new systems provides Type A barrier protection waterproofing as defined in BS 8102 (2009). They are quick and easy to apply, very fast curing and suitable for application in cooler temperatures – therefore extending the season for application and reducing the downtime of areas treated. TWS-Poly H produces a totally seamless waterproof surface on prepared concrete and can be applied by squeegee, brush, trowel or roller. The 2-component polyurea formulation is ideal for waterproofing pitched or flat roofs, decks and balconies and other areas where a degree of flexibility is required. The trafficable, cured surface also makes it suitable for waterproofing concrete floors in car parks etc. TWSPoly H can also be applied to internal and external walls. TWS-Poly S is another fast curing, 2-component polyuria formulation but designed for application by a twin nozzle, heated spray unit. Offering excellent bonding strength and crack bridging capability, TWS-Poly S can be combined with

geotextiles to obtain on-site applied, seamless liners or coatings in tunnels or canals or used to waterproof pitched or flat roofs. The cured surface allows for building movement and is trafficable and highly resistant to abrasion. Single component TWS Fastcoat cures as an elastic and seamless layer that offers excellent weather resistance and can withstand permanent water contact. A key feature is its ability to deliver a combination of root barrier and waterproofing layer, therefore reducing the number of layers required in green roof construction. Applied by brush, spreader or airless equipment, its cured surface can be lightly

trafficked making it suitable for low pitch or flat roofs and balconies. Liquid applied waterproofing systems can deal with complex shapes and contours where joints or folds in other waterproofing materials might cause a weakness. Technical support on the specification and installation of all

SIOO WOOD PROTECTION - A NEW WOOD MODIFICATION FOR THE UK All too often the appearance of new timber clad buildings is ruined by uneven weathering. It is quite common to see buildings where the shaded areas are still unweathered whereas the exposed areas have already changed to the silvery-grey colour associated with exposed wood. For this reason, pictures of timber clad buildings are always taken immediately after construction and not after a year or two! Aesthetics is hugely important in the built environment and this patchy weathering puts people off from specifying timber as a cladding material. A new product in the UK is the Swedish wood surface modification system, Sioo Wood Protection. This product reacts with the wood to produce a pleasing even grey surface within a few months of application. Very importantly, this accelerated weathering takes place through a chemical reaction of the Sioo system with the top few millimetres of the wood surface and so it is a permanent change. Because thegreying takes place due to the chemical reaction, a completely even appearance is obtained, since it is not reliant upon exposure to sunlight for the reaction to take place. The Sioo Wood Protection System uses silicate technology in a two part waterbased system. The first stage of the treatment uses a mineral silica solution that is able to penetrate the surface of the wood very efficiently. After the first treatment stage, a silanebased emulsion is applied, which cures by crosslinking to form a flexible silica network and provides

a water-proof barrier preventing leaching of the mineral silicate. Over time, the mineral silicate cures by reacting with atmospheric carbon dioxide to precipitate an insoluble silica network within the wood structure. The product has been used extensively for cladding and decking protection and has also been used to protect the decks of sailing boats. The Sioo system is used as a surface protection system, which is suitable for Use Classes 1, 2, 3.1 and 3.2 according to EN 335 Part 2 (see table). If additional protection is thought necessary for Use Class 3.2 applications, then the Sioo Wood Protection System can be applied to preservative treated wood and to thermally treated wood. When used in interior applications Sioo Wood has the huge advantage of being VOC-free, since it is water-based and uses silicate technology.

The team set out to retain as many of the trees as possible and in doing so they have created a striking avenue at the heart of the scheme which now forms a well-used public route through the development. AN INSTALLER OF PATIOMASTER HAS RECENTLY COMPLETED A £25K SHOWROOM REFURB, WITH MODERN SLIDING DOOR DISPLAYS.

£25K showroom refurb for Patiomaster Customer “Since we started installing PatioMaster sliding doors, we’ve had none of the issues that we have experienced with other manufacturers. In fact, once they are installed we can almost forget about them; they are virtually indestructible! Since we started trading 22 years ago we have changed fabricator four times, but four years ago we made the decision to use PatioMaster Northern Ireland for 100%, and we really believe that no other PVC-U manufacturer can offer the reliability that PatioMaster does.”

Northern Ireland’s Budget Windows & Conservatories has been a customer of PatioMaster Northern Ireland since 2010, when they were recommended to PatioMaster from another customer, and haven’t looked back since, as Managing Director David Evans explains.

Initially the company were going to build a display of aluminium bi-folding doors in the 10,000 sq ft showroom, but after a consultation with PatioMaster, they decided to go for grey on grey 4 pane sliders, which fit in with the modern flat roof extension that was built in place of a large, old conservatory. “Customer feedback told us that people are moving away from bi-folds and towards patio sliders and since the refurb sales have increased over 400%, with special order colours up 6%. We used to shy away from sliders but they are the preferred choice of door now for customers, as opposed to being a product they end up getting talked into. We are installing four a week now, from 2, 3 and 4 pane options.” David continues.

The company are already at four times the amount they were trading at last year, and David believes this is attributed to the ease and popularity of the PatioMaster sliding doors. “Across the board the whole package is appealing. You can find cheaper doors sure, but the quality and reliability of PatioMaster is unbeatable. Our association with the brand and the choice of products has given us a competitive edge, and allowed us to offer something a little more exciting and unique. The refurbishment has resulted in a huge increase, not just in the amount of orders we receive but also the order value.” PatioMaster is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of in-line sliding doors and works through a small network of local craftsmen.

DRU launches new Global gas fires, including ground breaking new cavity wall model

Global 70XT CF

DRU Global gas fires combine ingenious designs and high energy efficiency at prices that are affordable for all households. There are 17 models in total, including balanced and conventional flue, 2 and 3-sided, seethrough tunnel and freestanding fires. Global 55XT BF: The most popular model in the range is the Global 55XT. At only 55 cms wide and 54 cms high, it fits neatly into a Class1 chimney, has an eye-catching log fire display and can be combined with a selection of frames or fire surrounds. Now, for homes with no chimney, the new Global 55XT BF balanced flue model offers a clever and attractive solution.

Unique cavity wall kit: With the addition of the unique DRU cavity wall kit, the fire can be installed directly into an outside facing brick wall or pre-cast flue, with no need for a false chimneybreast and minimal building work. At only 255 mm deep, it is the slimmest and most flexible gas fire in the DRU Global range, with an energy efficiency rating of 84%. It has realistic logs, a powerful flame effect and interiors in classic stone or mirrored Ceraglass. Efficient use of heat: The Global 55XT utilises a blend of extra insulation around the cavity wall kit and discreet ventilation points under the mantle of the fire surround to channel warm air into the living room. At the same time, this prevents any build-up of excess heat in the brickwork above the fire. In combination with the custom-made Olivia fire surround, the result is an immaculate gas fire with a seamless finish. room. Global 70XT CF: Also recently launched by DRU is the new Global 70XT CF conventional flue gas fire, which is designed with the UK chimney in mind. It is an imposing fire, with a viewing window 70 cms wide x 60 cms high, framing a beautiful and realistic log fire display. Despite its impressive size, the Global 70XT has a

built-in depth of only 40 cms, making it easy to install with minimal building work. Tailor-made classic fire surround: When it is combined with the DRU tailor-made Charlotte fire surround, it forms a classic fireplace that will light up any living room. Unlike normal conventional flue gas fires, the Global 70XT requires no additional room ventilation and there are no air convection slots around the outer frame. It also has an integral safety mechanism that prevents any dispersal of CO gas into the room if the flue is blocked. Four interior finishes: There is a choice of four enviable interior finishes; smooth black, classic stone, slate or mirrored Ceraglass for extra visual depth. Both the Global 55XT and 70XT have electronic remote control and are available in mains gas or LPG versions. The new DRU Global gas fires will be available from approved DRU dealers across the UK in time for autumn 2016.

Ideal commercial boilers work out at Lymington Health & Leisure Four Ideal Commercial Evomax 100 boilers with frame and header kits have been installed as part of an extensive retrofit at the Lymington Health & Leisure centre in Lymington, Hampshire. The new Evomax boilers, which were specified by loyal customer New Forest District Council, were installed in the boiler room to supplement two older, standard efficiency boilers which were deemed to be

inefficient and did not modulate, meaning output was all or nothing when fired. New Forest District Council have implemented a programme of refurbishments across numerous council sites involving Evomax and other Ideal Commercial boilers. The council has found the combination of ease of installation and high efficiency readings to be very impressive, along with an attractive appearance. The introduction by Ideal of

the new Multiline cascade flue assembly allowed more of the work to be carried out by the council, thereby reducing the cost of the flue specialist materials and labour. Rob Sowden, Council Engineer for New Forest District Council, was able to carry out the majority of the installation himself as well as ensuring continuous hot water between the old and new systems. Rob was particularly impressed with the support he received: “As usual, the technical back-up from Ideal Commercial Boilers was exceptional, especially in the design stage, making sure that we complied with all current regulations.” The new Evomax boilers also make sense financially. “We are predicting a 10% saving on the gas bill every year which equates to £4,000 per annum. The complete project cost under our £30k budget so, at current gas costings, we are hoping the Evomax boilers will pay for themselves in six or seven years,” Rob said. Additionally, the leisure centre can look forward to a quieter boiler room as the existing boilers were very noisy when running. Polypipe makes the air flow at London’s Tate Modern Polypipe has reinforced its position as the UK’s leading manufacturer of plastic sustainable drainage, water management and ventilation products after its products were specified in one of London’s most prestigious museums –Tate Modern. Over 350 metres of Polypipe’s Ridgistorm-XL large diameter piping system was specified in 750mm and 950mm diameters for use as an air ventilation system under a new building being added to the south of the existing gallery. The system delivers air to distribution plenums at set locations within the gallery. Polypipe assisted with structural calculations in order to engineer the pipe to an exact stiffness classification of 1.0kN/m², ensuring that the pipe was neither over, nor under specified. The project called for the Ridgistorm-XL pipe to be manufactured in varying lengths, from 1.5m to 6m. Polypipe’s dedicated in-house fabrications team also pre-fabricated more than 60 unique bends and fittings, which ranged from five degree to 90 degree bends,

to ‘T’ junctions and specialist ‘S’-shaped bends in varying angles. Polypipe’s unique electro-fusion jointing of the Ridgistorm-XL system was also an integral factor in the specification of the site’s ventilation system, ensuring regulatory compliance due to its ability to provide greater air tightness and insulation than other forms of jointing. Emma Nicholls, Marketing Manager at Polypipe comments: “The project was particularly challenging, partly due to the fact that the ventilation system had to be designed to connect to fixed points within the new building, whilst avoiding the structure of the building itself. “However, our ability to engineer solutions and manufacture the system off-site in our in-house fabrications facility meant that we were able to deliver a system which met the exact needs of the client and contractor.” For further information on the new Tate Modern go to www.tate.org.uk Enquiry No.242 www.mclink.co.uk/913-242

Foam Insulation

Temporary building specialist ‘raises the roof’ with new product launch

Websters have developed a method of Polyurethane Sprayed Foam Insulation that is suitable for both old and new buildings. This continuous polyurethane foam membrane adheres to almost all surfaces and reduces heat loss by up to 80-90%.

With more and more businesses turning to temporary buildings as the UK continues to battle a chronic shortage of warehouse space, one specialist is continuing to bridge the gap between temporary and permanent structures. Spaciotempo has launched Oxygen, the new product offering in its family of temporary structures, characterised by a stylish curved roof profile. Combining high-end aesthetics with the robust construction which customers have come to expect from Spaciotempo, Oxygen goes even further towards bridging the gap between temporary and permanent structures. And for customers seeking to integrate an aluminium framed extension into their permanent facilities, where aesthetics play an increasing part, Oxygen certainly provides food for thought. VMZINC for £250m Cardiff bay development Cardiff Pointe, a residential project in Cardiff Bay, uniquely benefits from two waterfronts and is one of the biggest in the city for decades. Scott Brownrigg’s design specified VMZINC® standing seam façades and roofs in ANTHRAZINC® throughout phases one and two on energy-smart homes which stand on the peninsula adjacent to Cardiff Yacht Club and opposite the International Sports Village. Two 24 and 18-storey towers which dramatically cantilever out over the water on the north of the site are also clad in zinc to provide added focus for the colour’s visual aesthetic. Creating 640 homes over nine phases, the development will also include a public plaza providing community facilities, bars and restaurants.

It is an exceptional alternative to dry lining as it provides a continuous membrane of unrivalled properties. Sprayed foam insulation is particularly popular as it not only reduces heat loss but can also help keep out wind and wind driven snow; prevent tiles slipping, stops condensation and can even obviate the need for a replacement roof. Styrocladeco now available in bespoke sizes

Decothane Keeps Pendleton Housing Scheme Dry

Styrocladeco, the weather resistant panel that is designed to insulate an upstand or parapet in new or refurbished roofing applications, is now available cut to bespoke sizes. Manufacturer Panel Systems has introduced this new service following demand from contractors, as part of making the product even quicker and easier to install on roofs. Danny Phelan, National Sales Manager at Panel Systems, said: “Styrocladeco is one of our most popular roof insulation products and the new bespoke sizing option should make it an even more popular choice for roofs. Roofing Contractor, Weatherwell, is due to start work on site at Salix House; the ninth block of flats the company has upgraded using Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane liquid membrane as part of the ambitious Pendleton regeneration programme in Salford. The eight blocks completed to date have all undergone a major refurbishment, including improvements to their energy performance and the building envelope to enhance thermal performance. The roofing schemes carried out by Weatherwell using Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane system

have played an important role in this strategy, which has seen each block improved and leased back to the council as part of the PFI. A performance specification for a liquid system with a 25-year guarantee was issued for all nine blocks, which range in size from 12 storeys to 32. As Keepmoat had previously used the Decothane system successfully on similar projects, the Sika Liquid Plastics product was chosen, and Weatherwell was appointed as an approved contractor. Blackpool Pleasure Beach is thrilled with Kemper System solution Two of the popular rides at Blackpool Pleasure Beach have been upgraded to ensure they continue to thrill families of visitors for another generation thanks to Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 liquid waterproofing membrane. Opened in 2000 at a cost of £15 million, indoor log flume ‘Valhalla’ is one of the 120-year-old Pleasure Beach’s most popular rides, offering visitors a thrilling Viking-themed journey. The external façade features a ‘waterfall’ that dispenses 12,000 gallons of water per minute, splashing the covered waiting area below. It was this area of the ride that was upgraded with an overlay of Kemperol V210, a cold liquid applied waterproofing system that bonds directly to the substrate and forms a reinforced monolithic membrane that cannot delaminate and offers a BBAaccredited service life of 25 years. Comments Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s Construction Manager, Tim Currey: “The volume of water constantly pouring on the queue shelter roof for Enquiry No.245 www.mclink.co.uk/913-245

Valhalla is far in excess of what any roof would normally have to deal with, so it needed a robust waterproofing membrane with no vulnerable seams and no risk of water penetration.” The Kemperol V210 cold liquid resin system was applied by roofing contractor, Castle Roofing, in a single wet-on-wet process, applying resin immediately followed by a flexible reinforcement fleece and then more resin to ensure complete saturation of the fleece before the membrane was allowed to cure. The same system was used to overlay the roof of the theme park’s Alice in Wonderland family ride, which was originally constructed in the 1950s and was suffering water ingress in some

areas. Here, Castle Roofing cut out sections of the existing felt roof where it had split, filling these areas will a repair mortar made of Kemper System’s D Primer and quartz sand, before installing the Kemperol V210 system as an overlay. Tim adds: “The Kemperol V210 enabled the contractor to work on small sections of roof at a time and manage the programme around the operational demands of the business, while providing a robust, durable and flexible waterproofing solution.”

Kipling’s Westward Ho! Landmark

consultations for the proposed improvements for the promenade and rock pool, local residents requested that this was commemorated.

Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem ‘IF’ has been made into a permanent promenade landmark at Westward Ho!, Devon. Kipling spent several of his childhood years at Westward Ho! and, following

Torridge District Council decided to inscribe the first verse of Rudyard’s poem ‘If’ into the pavement of the new promenade with the words being laid out in traditional granite setts. However, the complexity and cost of forming the letters using granite setts was prohibitive. Contractor, Devon and Cornwall Surfacing proposed a simpler and more cost effective approach: the use of Quicksetts. Conceived by Quicksetts and manufactured by

Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO channel runs installed at Scarles Yard Car Park, Norwich Scarles Yard comprises a purpose built multi storey car park of concrete frame construction with ancillary integrated warehouse / workshop units located along its frontage. With three levels, the car park provides 823 spaces for Aviva employees during the working week and is open for public use on Saturdays and Bank Holidays for a flat daily charge, being particularly popular when Norwich City FC play at home. The top level of the car park is drained with 453 metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 - Type 75 channels in various run lengths. The channels are fitted with FIBRETEC® HEELSAFE 9mm slot gratings with a loading Class of C250. Made from PA-GF, the FIBRETEC® grating will not rust and has a slot configuration specifically designed by Hauraton R & D engineers to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well

licensed manufacturer Jobling Purser, Quicksetts look just like traditional granite setts but their installation is fast and efficient. The 18mm thick composite moulded setts incorporate granite to resemble traditional setts. For the Westward Ho! project, they were simply glued into place and then a resin-bound aggregate pavement surface was applied around them. With no need for any excavation, installation was simple and fast. The final result provides the robust visual permanence of traditional granite setts with the inconvenience and coast of excavation. The words of the poem’s first verse are set in a single line along the

promenade. Devon and Cornwall Surfacing completed the verse of 71 words, made up of 271 letters, in just 6 days. The Council and local residents are thrilled with the result. Torridge District Councillor, Dr Peter G Le Maistre, Ward Member for Westward Ho!, said: “Rudyard Kipling’s poem ‘IF’ still sends shivers down my spine when I read it. It is so evocative of the British spirit and what it is to be British. What could be than to have this better commemorated on the front at Westward Ho!?”

as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating and important consideration for this project. The RECYFIX® channel component is made from 100% recycled polypropylene (PP) and has an intake cross section of 372 cm2. The FIBRETEC® grating are factory fitted on all channels. PRO accessories include a trash box, foul air trap, mud bucket, closed and DN 70/100 end caps. Ken Burgess, Hauraton‘s Project Manager comments; “As each one metre unit only weighed 3.4kg, the contractor, ATPS of Clacton on Sea, found the RECYFIX® PRO channels with their FIBRETEC® gratings easy to install in the concreted top level of the car park”.

Eye-catching Brett Paving Solutions for £15.5m School refurbishment

Sarum Academy in Salisbury has regenerated its external grounds, as part of a larger £15.5m redevelopment, using a proven permeable paving solution from UK manufacturer Brett Landscaping. The eye-catching scheme has been created using Piatto Block paving with its vibrant colours and clean, modern design, combined with classic Omega and Omega Flow rectangular block paving from Brett Landscaping. The Omega Flow permeable paving allows rainfall to permeate naturally between the paving blocks into a permeable subbase as part of a SuDS solution designed to help prevent flooding. This product selection has been used to create a variety of patterns which complement and reflect the contemporary lines of the school itself. The resurfacing project has formed part of a comprehensive renovation scheme, which began in April 2012 when the school’s original 1950’s buildings were considered ‘no longer

fit for purpose’. Leaks, drainage issues, and a general poor state of repair were contributory factors to the schools need for redevelopment. The process, which was completed in July 2013, has resulted in the creation of an inspiring, stateof-the-art educational facility, amidst outstanding views of the Wiltshire Countryside. “The school building was in significant need of improvement, so the decision was made to completely rebuild a new impressive learning environment on the school’s original site,” explains Ms Dawn Higgins, Director of Business and Finance at Sarum Academy. The modern architectural style of the new school required complementary hard landscaping, with landscape architect consultancy, Illman Young, assigned to the task. The balconies and external balustrade feature traditional-style railed infill combined with a contemporary twist in the form of tapered flat-bar stanchions with laser-cut holes. neaco’s national sales manager, Peter Melia, said: “neaco’s technical team has the expertise and experience to offer total design flexibility and over the years we have developed bespoke solutions across a huge range of projects. The new TPP headquarters is the latest example and the building is certainly an impressive sight from all angles.” neaco offers a range of balustrade and balconies available in stainless steel or aluminium powder coated in a choice of solid colour, metallic colour and wood-effect finishes combined with a wide choice of infills, including vertical or horizontal rails,

perforated panels, tension wire, toughened glass panels (in-line or offset) and mesh. The company also offers structural and semi-structural glass balustrade and aluminium open grilles which are suitable for decking, access walkways, screening, cladding, ventilation, staging and solar shading. neaco also also manufactures and installs a wide range of adaptive bathroom products including true-level-access showers, halfheight shower doors and support systems including grab rails, drop-down rails and shower seats.

The seven product range is made from 100% oil solids. This refers to the minute oil particle content undiluted by other materials, which ensures thorough coverage, long lasting protection, durability of finish, appearance retention and low maintenance. Oil solid content in all competitive wood care products is circa 50% at the maximum with many being less than that. This gives the new Polyvine range an enormous performance advantage against anything else in the exterior wood care market.
