Forbo’s Allura Stone LVT provides an attractive and welcoming alternative to exposed concrete at The Kelpies Visitor Centre

Forbo ‘brings the outside in’ at The Kelpies Visitor Centre Architects at Nicoll Russell Studios have worked closely with Forbo Flooring Systems to create an attractive and welcoming interior environment at The Kelpies Visitor Centre at Helix Park in Falkirk.

Nuway Grid entrance matting with Coral Anthracite inserts was installed to jelp keep interior floors clean dry and safe

Enquiry No.200

The centre provides an all-weather, allyear-round facility from which visitors can admire the magnificent 30m high Kelpies, the world’s largest equine sculptures. It also incorporates a cafe, exhibition space and a retail area. Euan McCallum, Senior Associate at Nicoll Russell Studios, said: “When it came to specifying flooring for the centre, we initially contemplated having an exposed concrete finish, which would reflect the industrial heritage of The Kelpies. However, our client was concerned that the concrete may feel

The Centre has a cafe, exhibition space and a retail areas

too hard beneath visitors’ feet and potentially be unwelcoming. So, we contacted Forbo for help as we were aware of the Allura Stone luxury vinyl tile range, which offers an appearance similar to polished concrete but without the associated costs and drawbacks.” The main public areas of the centre have been fitted with Allura Stone LVT in three colourways – Grigio Concrete, Charcoal Concrete and Natural Concrete. The natural aesthetics and 50 x 50cm format were chosen to blend effectively with the granite paving of the plaza outside. The installation pattern not only reflects the exterior paving layout but also echoes the patterns of the stainless steel cladding panels on the Kelpies themselves. Other Forbo products installed as part of the floor scheme include Nuway Grid entrance matting with Coral Anthracite inserts to complement the Allura Stone

floor coverings, and Surestep safety flooring to help prevent slips and trips in back of house areas such as kitchens and staff rooms. Euan concluded: “Throughout the entire project, Forbo were very helpful providing advice and all the samples we wanted. They not only assisted with the product selection, they also provided us with technical assistance and gave us a fully detailed specification for laying the materials on the substrate. Overall, we are all very pleased with the finished project and the help we received from the company.” The innovative use of the floor coverings at The Kelpies Visitor Centre helped the project to win the 2016 Fly Forbo competition. 06 FOCUS ON RETAIL & LEISURE Graves Leisure Centre Opens

The recently opened Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre will be the HQ for the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) - a 2012 Olympic Legacy project funded by the Department of Health. NCSEM aims to promote the benefits of sport, exercise and physical activity to sufferers of chronic diseases and to reduce their impact on the NHS. The £16m development has been built on the site of the current Graves tennis and leisure centre in the south of the city. It includes a 25-metre six-lane swimming pool, a separate learner pool, a major new fitness suite and studios, two additional indoor tennis courts and the city’s first-ever dedicated gymnastics and trampoline centre. Mark Rabey, General Manager & Senior Project Advisor at Caledonian Stone, a specialist stone and tile supplier, identifies the benefits of using porcelain products in retail environments. When procuring tiles for retail environments you need to consider where they will be placed. For example, are they going to be used in a busy area with high levels of footfall? This will determine the strength and durability required of the tile, and will help you select the right material. The aesthetic benefits of porcelain are widely recognised, but it is also incredibly hardwearing, easy to clean and has good anti-slip qualities even when it’s wet. For businesses and owners of public areas this is important, as they have a responsibility to ensure that areas are safe. At Caledonian Stone, we have our own pendulum slip resistance testing equipment that ensures the products we recommend meet the correct standards in line with HSE Slip Resistance Guidelines. For example, our Logan porcelain meets these standards and is available in a range of different sizes and colours. Enquiry No.400

Holiday Inn Express uses innovative hybrid air conditioning

A new 250-bedroom hotel has become the first in the UK to use an innovative hybrid air conditioning technology that removes the need to install leak detection equipment in occupied rooms.

View our publication online at

The Holiday Inn Express Birmingham City Centre in central Birmingham is using Mitsubishi Electric’s Hybrid VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) system to keep guests comfortable in a controllable, energy efficient way, whilst still offering the full flexibility of design

and installation that VRF conditioning is synonymous with.

“We needed reliable and effective air conditioning that is easy to use from the guest’s perspective but which is also more cost effective for the hotel moving forward as it removes the annual maintenance costs associated with a leak detection system”, explained Mark Foster, Managing Director of Centre Island, which will manage the hotel. “The added advantage of using Mitsubishi Electric equipment is that we can control the whole system centrally, which minimises energy use for the business whilst still allowing guests to have individual control within their rooms. This also ensures we can stop rooms being heated or cooled when they are empty”. “We proposed Hybrid VRF as it completely removes leak detection in occupied spaces whilst still offering the flexibility of a VRF system,” said Brian Inett of John Sisk & Son. “We were already aware of the Hybrid system and had been looking for a suitable project to use it on, so this was an ideal

solution for the client, especially as it does away with the annual costs of leak detection maintenance.” The 18-storey hotel in Holliday Street, Birmingham, which was designed by Liverpool-based KKA Architecture, will use 16 outdoor condensing units to operate 250 slim ducted indoor units in a clever design that has one outdoor unit serving one wing on each of two floors to minimise the refrigerant pipework within the building. “Hybrid VRF uses water to transfer heating and cooling around the building, which removes the need for refrigerant leak detection in occupied spaces,” said Dennis Winter of installer Dragon Air Conditioning Ltd. But there are also other benefits to the project as the system is being installed in phases which matches the way the hotel is being built.” Further details on the innovative, award-winning system can be found at the dedicated website: Enquiry No.202

New landmark high-rise in South West London, supplied by Hueck UK Another successful collaboration between aluminium building systems supplier, Hueck UK, and façade contractor McMullen Facades Ltd, a Lakesmere Group company, has recently seen the completion of one of south west London’s new landmark buildings, The Pinnacle.

Rising 170 feet high, the tower construction delivers 88 new luxury apartments, including a number of penthouses, with impressive views of the City. Developed by St. George PLC, this 15-storey building is the flagship high-rise within its award-winning riverside project, Battersea Reach. The Pinnacle’s fully glazed curved façade has been manufactured using the high performance Trigon L aluminium system from Hueck. Highly versatile, this unitised façade system lends itself to a wide variety of curtain walling designs. “We are using Hueck systems extensively across many of our current projects, and have successfully collaborated with Hueck UK on a series of iconic buildings over the past few years,” said Derek Price, operations director at McMullen Facades Ltd.

Enquiry No.210

“The Pinnacle has a complex design, with no flat elevations, and we were looking for a range of high performance systems, not just curtain walling, but also window and door systems, to meet a series of demanding requirements. Hueck’s portfolio is very broad, allowing for great flexibility, and enabling us to deliver a complex design while ensuring the correct building tolerances were achieved. “We worked closely with the architect, façade consultants, and our supplier Hueck UK, through the design stage, ensuring a smooth delivery of the project, on time and on budget,” added Derek. Approximately 1,300 unitised panels shape The Pinnacle’s striking curved envelope. Aside from Trigon L, the building also boasts nearly 180 Lambda 65 windows and doors. Featuring low

thresholds, the doors comply with the Life Time Homes standards, and achieve an impressive 600Pa air permeability/water tightness. Hueck’s popular Volato M lift/slide doors have also been specified for apartments and penthouses opening into private balconies or terraces. Leon Friend, Project Development Director at Hueck, commented: “The Hueck Trigon L unitised façade system, combined with McMullen Facades’ engineering expertise, delivers The Pinnacle’s wavy appearance, a tribute to the river Thames, which it overlooks. Aside from looking the part, our systems have had a substantial contribution to meeting stringent energy performance requirements and practicality needs.”

The roof of a busy hotel in the central of Manchester required general repairs and had failing waterproofing to the parapet walls. The building had been suffering from water ingress from the roof for a number of years which had gradually worsened over time. This had led to water damage to the interior and had highlighted problems with the parapet concrete wall above. The failed areas of waterproofing required replacing with a flexible water-proof system which could be terminated over the parapet wall and into the existing waterproofing. ISO-Chemie’s new complete solution to self adhesive sealing foils IMPROVED installation of ISO-CHEMIE’s humidity variable window and façade sealing foils is provided following the introduction of new full surface self-adhesive variants, COMPLETE and COMPLETE DUO. The ISO-CONNECT VARIO SD humidity regulating foil provides rapid and effective year round high performance sealing of window and door frame connecting joints, while ISO-CONNECT VARIO XD offers improved UV resistance for curtain walling situations when sealing inner and outer window and façade connecting joints. The extension of the range of adhesive alternatives for ISOCHEMIE’s window membrane and airtight foils means that the application of additional gun applied paste-type adhesive is not required during fenestration sealing work. The COMPLETE and COMPLETE DUO variants enable the sealing foils to be located in place and repositioned if necessary after initial application before the full strength of the adhesive develops and takes effect.

Furthermore, the risk of leaks from poor or patchy adhesive application can be avoided while the foil can be plastered over immediately after installation, providing further time saving benefits. The risk of soiling on windows, surrounding construction work and on the building itself due to residual adhesive is also significantly reduced. ISO-CHEMIE

Spectral Lighting top of the class at University of Hertfordshire

Spectral Lighting has provided an energy efficient and aesthetically beautiful lighting scheme to the new 4 storey Science building at the University of Hertfordshire, working alongside engineering consultancy Couch Perry & Wilkes. The appearance of the light fitting was of paramount importance to the university, as it wanted a suspended luminaire that had an interesting body form and lens

combination. The Spectral JEP luminaire fitted the bill perfectly, and the university particularly liked the unique curved shape of the fitting and it’s trademark holographic effect created by the LED’s on the curved microprismatic lens. The engineering integrity of the luminaire was also key and compliance of glare control was an additional issue that had to be addressed. “The University of Hertfordshire asked us to design an efficient and exciting lighting scheme for its labs,” says Andrew Harris, Associate at Couch Perry & Wilkes. “We selected the Spectral JEP fitting because it offered the fantastic quality of light that end users needed and the appearance of the luminaire reflected the Architectural aspirations. The University places great importance on sustainability, and the excellent performance of Spectral’s LED luminaires helped the University to achieve a BREEAM rating of “Excellent” and enhance the ‘green credentials’ of the campus overall.” SPECTRAL LIGHTING

Autumn and winter shades on show with Crown Paints Colour Influences Crown Paints has revealed the latest colour trends, offering inspiration for the autumn and winter months ahead.

create an ethereal, magical look – and it illustrates just how versatile blue can be. Accents within the trend include sophisticated grey and chalky neutrals, which perfectly enhance the blue gradations and offer a subtle nod to clouds, mist and rocks.

Under the paint manufacturer’s Colour Influences programme, designers and colour experts have curated three colour palettes for autumn and winter. ‘Out of the Dark’, ‘Skyscapes’ and ‘Faded Berries,’ provide a wealth of ideas for specifiers to create a stunning effect across commercial and residential environments, and in public space.

The final palette from Crown Paints’ Colour Influences autumn/winter 2016 is entitled ‘Faded Berries,’ which sees nature take on a robust and moody persona. This atmospheric influence captures the intensity of nature as it matures and evolves, evoking a landscape characterised by wild heather and untamed foliage.

The first of the three palettes, ‘Out of the Dark’ features a dramatic and daring edge - relying on the use of dark colours to make a strong colour statement, and then applying an expanse of contrasting tone to turn it on its head. Black and charcoal grey are dominant in this look, forming solid blocks of tone that are interrupted by strong blasts of bright yellow, pink and orange.

By setting the richness of deep heather tones against mossy and grassy greens, the palette takes on a decidedly untamed aesthetic, celebrating a nature that is faded and wild rather than restrained and pristine.

The second palette ‘Skyscapes’, is inspired by a natural landscape, and uses layers of tonal colour to

The berry and green tones are complemented by neutral accents which bring a softness to the overall look. Every year, Crown Paints invites its panel of designers, colourists and trend forecasters to identify

the influences that will define the colour landscape for the year ahead. The group discusses global events, social and economic changes as well as fashion and interior design trends to identify patterns for future influences and ultimately learn what will drive customers’ tastes and behaviour in the year ahead. The colours are available in many of the high quality, professional products within the company’s Crown Trade, Sadolin and Sandtex Trade brands, which are all crafted with over 200 years of knowledge, experience and passion. Lindapter’s technical team quickly designed bespoke connection solutions using the CE Marked Type B clamp, which allowed contractors to rapidly install the panels by easily sliding and aligning the eco-boards into position before tightening with a standard torque wrench.

Lindapter provided connection solutions for Arup’s Circular Economy Building

As only hand tools are required to install Lindapter products, noise, waste, and tool/welding consumables are avoided. Lindapter clamps allow onsite adjustability and adaptability to suit different beam thicknesses and angle alignment to ensure a guaranteed fit, therefore minimising site waste or returned construction components.

The construction industry currently produces three times more waste than all UK households combined, including 60 tonnes of materials that go straight to the tip due to incorrect ordering, damage or not fitting correctly. The Circular Building project aims to change this. Lindapter and many other collaborators pulled together, generously giving their time, products and services to support Arup’s project, which tested the maturity of circular economy thinking in order to prove

that circularity is achievable. The prototype challenged both designers and suppliers to think differently about their chosen materials and construction processes in order to create a building where, at the end of its life, all of its elements can be re-used, re-manufactured or re-cycled. True circularity has only been possible with the support of manufacturers such as Lindapter who are committed to testing the principles that underpin the circular economy.

The Dimplex EC SmartRad is ideal for use with high temperature boilers. Though compact in design, the combination of large surface area heat exchanger and fan enables a room to be heated five times faster with no overshooting. Intelligent controls monitor the air temperature and automatically adjust the fan speed to

closely regulate heat output room-byroom. This delivers improved comfort and energy efficiency compared to a traditional central thermostat system. With a highly efficient EC motor offering smooth fan start-up and variable fan speed, SmartRad’s intelligent control not only automatically adjust the heat output in a room, it can also reduce fan speeds to a whisper, so it will not disturb sleepers even during the coldest nights. Christian Hadley, installed product marketing manager for Dimplex, said: “The capability that Dimplex SmartRad provides to control your home temperature on a room-by-room basis and the ability to self-adjust fan speed to accurately maintain temperature is simply revolutionary for water systems. By replacing the home’s single thermostat we can eradicate overheating or cold spots, and there is no need to continually be twiddling the heat up or down on radiators to try and get the temperature in a room comfortable. SmartRad does it all for

you, faster, and more efficiently than ever before.” SmartRad also boosts the efficiency of air source or ground source heat pump systems by allowing them to work at much lower flow temperature, keeping running costs to a minimum. SmartRad is also a proven response in new build and refurbishment properties where it is not always possible or practical to install underfloor heating, or wall space is at a premium. A key lock function is also available for commercial environments such as care homes, schools and hospitals, where operators would want to restrict access to the main control unit. With four models with nominal outputs from 800W to 1800W, in a choice of white metal or white glass, there is an EC SmartRad to suit every installation. Tel: 0844 879 3587 Web:

Underfloor Heating by Darren Trivett, Omnie’s Managing Director The commonest forms of underfloor heating (UFH) all involve circulating water through highperformance plastic pipe, which has been set within the structure of the floor. This water can be heated efficiently by a conventional gas or oil boiler or by solar thermal panels, or it can be heated (or cooled) very efficiently using a heat pump. (If you circulate cold water through an underfloor heating system during the summer, you can create a comfort-cooling system). A heat pump can use electricity 3 to 4 times more efficiently than electric underfloor heating, and electric underfloor heating can never provide cooling. UFH has become the preferred form of heating throughout the residential sector - from top-end through self-build to local authority and housing associations. It is also now commonly specified for schools and medical facilities, for offices, factories, boats and even zoos. There are three ways in which heat can be transferred into a room – conduction, convection and radiation. UFH mostly uses radiation and this is the most natural and comfortable form of heating – think of sunbathing. We like radiant energy. UFH is safe because there are no hot surfaces, it is unobtrusive, more hygienic and more energy-efficient. Radiators, by comparison, mostly use convection to heat a room. They heat the air, which becomes buoyant. This rises to the ceiling and travels across the ceiling to the far side of the room. As it cools, the heated air drops and then returns across the floor to the radiators to be re-heated. This convection cycle, as we call it, inevitably puts the hottest air in the room at ceiling level and the floor is always the coldest part of the room. With UFH, the temperature in the room is very even and the floor is the warmest part. With UFH, the floor surface is made about as warm as the palm of your hand (25-27OC). The right form of UFH can achieve this surface temperature using water which is much cooler than even over-sized radiators require and, if your heating system can be effective while using cooler water, then not only is this more

energy-efficient but it also opens up the prospect of being able to obtain this lower temperature water from renewable energy sources. UFH has the potential to wean a building off its dependency on continued availability/affordability of fossil-fuels. Most UFH suppliers ought to be able to supply an effective form of UFH when it is set within a screeded or concrete floor. It is just a case of installing the correct amount of plastic heating pipe over the top of the insulation before the screed or concrete is laid and then making sure the screed/concrete fully wraps around the pipe. If you pin the pipe directly to the top of the insulation, it can be damaged when the screed is transported across the top in barrows and the pipe can often be kicked loose when liquid screeds are laid over the top. Fixing clip-plates across the top of the insulation and then plugging the pipe into these protects the pipe and holds it securely in place while the screed or concrete is laid. With pipe-in-screed UFH, the primary issues for a floor layer are these: Screeds and concrete contain a lot of water when first installed and it is essential that the screed is completely dry before the floor finish is laid, otherwise this water will collect on the underside of the floor finish as condensation and lift off vinyl or soak into the underside of a timber finish or carpets. The official advice is that the UFH should NOT be used to accelerate drying and the general guidance with sand/cement screeds is to allow drying to occur naturally at the rate of 1day/mm of screed/concrete thickness up to 50mm and 2days/mm for any thickness greater than 50mm. This means you should allow 100days for a 75mm thick screed to dry naturally, and it might take longer than this during the winter. If you try to use the UFH to speed up the drying process, this has to be done very, very carefully. If done too quickly, this could stop the screed/concrete curing correctly or cause it to shrink, curl or crack. Although screed/concrete is a relatively good thermal conductor, and this can help this form of UFH to be effective while using low water temperatures, which

Toron Suspended

is good, floor structures formed from this material inevitably have high thermal mass which means a lot of thermal energy is needed to change the floor surface temperature (and consequently the heating power) and enable the UFH to respond to changes in heating demand and this is not so good. Many buildings in this country are nowadays constructed with timber floors. There are some flooring companies and even some underfloor heating suppliers who say that underfloor heating should not be used in a timber floor because timber is a poor thermal conductor. This is because they have either not used the correct form of underfloor heating in the past or simply because don’t have it in their product portfolio. The truth is that the correct form of underfloor heating can be very effective and the best way of looking after a timber floor throughout its lifetime, if you do it right. Recent changes to SAP have had the effect of giving a building a better energy rating if it has UFH in a timber floor than if it has UFH in screed/concrete. The improvement in SAP is sufficient that, if a house has timber UFH which is powered using a ground-source heat pump, a house which would otherwise be rated Level C could instead have the potential to be rated Level B. The most important reason for this is because timber floor constructions have lower thermal mass than screed/concrete and this enables timber UFH to change heating power output more quickly and with a smaller injection of thermal energy. However it is important to make sure you choose the right underfloor heating system for timber floors. Not all systems work in the same way some require very high water temperatures to be effective. So it is important to ask the supplier for independent heat output test data to make sure it will provide enough heat especially when using a heat pump.

Shackerley delivers premium quality cladding at major North East leisure development

Thernermal and acoustic insulation is hidden in ther cavity behind the hotel’s SureClad® ceramic granite façades

Ceramic granite ’framing’ in complementary colourways links the cinema visually with the hotel

Traditional brick ‘railway arches’ contrast with the contemporary ceramic granite cladding

Ventilated façade specialist Shackerley has supplied over 2100m2 of SureClad® ceramic granite cladding for a new hotel and cinema at the £30 million Feethams leisure development in Darlington, County Durham. Close to the town centre, and boasting a lively mix of restaurants and bars alongside the 80-bedroom Premier Inn and 9-screen Vue Cinema, the landmark Feethams leisure complex is integral to Darlington’s regeneration strategy. The ceramic granite cladding was specified by Darlington-based Niven Architects who were keen to give the development’s tallest and most prominent buildings a high quality external finish. ‘Although we were

working within an affordability envelope and needed to get a lot of building for our budget, we had no intention of compromising on quality or design,’ commented Peter Hodges, Director. ‘We selected Shackerley’s SureClad® ventilated façade system in contrasting colours and finishes for the Premier Inn, and a combination of render and SureClad® ceramic granite façade for the Vue Cinema.’ To bring a cohesive feel to the development, semi-polished cream ‘travertine’ ceramic granite was used on both buildings: paired with highly polished black panels on hotel elevations and with natural, unpolished grey on the cinema. ‘This offered a cost-effective solution whilst achieving a modern quality feel that fitted with our design aspirations,’ said Peter.

The Feethams Leisure development is key to Darlington’s regeneration strategy

The Premier Inn’s demanding acoustic and thermal specification called for additional insulation to be fused into the building’s structural panels. Shackerley’s SureClad® Access system was employed to overclad this high performance insulation with ceramic granite, fixing through to the structural framing system. Tony Blake, Commercial Director at specialist contractor Speedclad, said: ‘We’ve successfully installed Shackerley’s ceramic granite cladding on many projects now. It’s a high quality, well engineered product and the SureClad® Access system gives us complete flexibility on site. Being able to install panels non-sequentially makes it easier to set the building out, and if we need to leave any panels out we can come back to complete

gaps later. The ability to demount and replace single panels in isolation also makes any maintenance work cost effective and convenient.’ ‘The Feethams complex is an important part of Darlington’s regeneration journey,’ commented Paul Spensley, Project Manager at Urban & Civic Plc, the property development and investment company responsible for the project, ‘We’re very proud of the development and believe it would be difficult to find a better leisure scheme in the UK in terms of quality of finish and operator line-up.’ For further details please contact Shackerley on 0800 783 0391 or visit Enquiry No.226

Mapei UK comfortably secures shortlisted place at FERFA Awards Mapei is delighted to announce they have been shortlisted at the prestigious annual FeRFA resin flooring awards for “Small Commercial Project of the Year” for their work with Coatech at BDP Architects practice, Bristol. Mapei’s innovative “Mapefloor Comfort” system in AR/X Grey, was installed to cover 180m2 of flooring in the meeting and bathroom areas simultaneously providing a modern resin flooring solution and acting as a demonstration tool for prospective clients. National Specification Project Manager Mo Aljan commented, “The shortlisting not only reflects how great the Mapefloor Comfort flooring system is, but also all of the hard work Mapei’s technical team and Coatech, put in to this project.” Initially the carpet tiles and multiple layers of vinyl tiles were removed exposing the sub base. A cove was installed to all walls in the washroom area ensuring the floor area remains easy to clean and maintain. Mapecomfort rubber mat was adhered

to the floor with Mapefloor Pore Filler, then coated with the Mapefloor Pore Filler again. Once this had cured, Coatech applied a coat of Mapei Mapefloor PU 460, a 2-3mm flexible, self-smoothing polyurethane. To finish, two coats of Mapei Mapefloor Finish 58 W, a matt finish polyurethane coating was applied. Coatech said “The Mapefloor Comfort Resin flooring system is a fantastic, innovative product and it was great to be involved in the very first installation

of it worldwide and work alongside Mapei on this project.” The comfortable level of flooring is provided from the elastic matting at the base of the system also has excellent soundproofing capabilities, reducing the impact of noise transmission into areas below. The flooring system has a high resistance to wear, making it ideal in offices where abrasion from constant foot traffic and moveable office furniture such as castor chairs is prevalent.

As part of the refurbishment project the atrium and gallery areas of the museum needed to be removed due to the requirement for new service ducts and access points. The biggest challenge was being able to

source an equivalent option to the original flooring. The immediate solution appeared to point towards comprising hundreds of individual patches throughout the floors areas in order to recreate the exact look and feel. Atkinson and Kirby created a custom Red Oak floor in keeping with the original Red Oak strip floors to create a sympathetic outcome. The floor was then fitted around the newly installed services to produce a seamless result. ATKINSON & KIRBY

Kährs Design Studio opens in Clerkenwell Kährs has opened its new Design Studio in Clerkenwell, London’s architectural and interior design district. Located on Albemarle Way - with a roof terrace overlooking The Priory Church of the Order of St John - the Design Studio will provide a central hub for Kährs award-winning wood flooring range. It will also showcase décor styles, furnishings and heating technology from brand partners - Earthborn, BoConcept and NuHeat - with Kährs’ resident interior design team on-hand to provide help and expertise. “We’re very excited to be joining Clerkenwell’s thriving design community. We hope that we can provide something a little different. By combining

our own floor designs with other key décor elements, we can provide a wealth of inspiration under one roof. As we’re tucked away, just off Clerkenwell Road, we’ve also been able to create an intimate, sanctuary-like space and we’re looking forward to sharing it with visitors, indoors and on our roof terrace,” explained Harvey Booth, Kährs Country Manager. Clement steel windows picked for church conversion in Battersea Clement EB24 windows have been developed for fenestration projects where a traditional steel window appearance is required, replicating the appearance of original or existing windows while simultaneously providing all the advantages of 21st century technology. Manufactured with exceptionally slim frames, the 24mm double glazed units mean that the largest possible glazed area is provided, thereby optimising solar gain and saving energy through reduced use of artificial lighting.

The Sanctuary, formerly St Paul’s Church, in Battersea, has been impressively converted into four luxury apartments and one stunning new build house. Clement were selected to supply all the steel windows and conservation rooflights for this project. The 19th century Listed Building has a prominent position within the St John’s Hill Conservation Area of the London Borough of Wandsworth. The church had fallen into disrepair following the demise of its original use. Clement worked closely with The James Laurence Group and the London Borough of Wandsworth’s Planning Department to sensitively restore the church, refurbishing and replacing all the leaded windows. The bespoke demands of the project required Clement to use two steel window ranges, sometimes within the same aperture, to achieve the

exact look required. Both W20 and EB24 window ranges were fitted to create the beautiful shaped windows which include club heads. Developer Nick Laurence, co-founder of The James Laurence Group, commented: “We wanted to create something high quality but out of the ordinary and to play on the building’s idiosyncratic features. The windows supplied by Clement are unusual and make a statement whilst simultaneously satisfying the demands of the Conservation Officers.  We are delighted with the end result.” The project was selected by Historic England for its Heritage Counts case study.

GARADOR’S Retractable Plus for today’s bigger cars

] ]

In the last few years most cars have continued to get bigger while the sizes of many garages have remained the same . The result - frustrated homeowners who can’t park their car inside their garage without the threat of damage or the daily nuisance of having to turn in the wing mirrors to get through the garage door. Step up Garador! Britain’s top garage door manufacturer offers a choice of lifting gear for Up & Over doors, including Canopy, Retractable and Retractable Plus. Its Retractable Plus lifting gear has specially designed lifting arms which allow for wider cars to use the full width of the garage door opening. Retractable lifting gear provides extra drive-through width for modern cars (which are often wider). No cables are used in the lifting process. Instead, they work by the door panels being raised by steel arms and a spring cassette mounted at either side of the door panel to provide a smooth, controlled lift. Retractable Plus lifting gear is especially useful on standard width garage doors under 7'6" feet (2286mm) where that extra space can make all the difference. Garador’s Retractable Plus are straightforward to install and are, along with normal retractable lifting gear, the easiest type of Up & Over door to automate. Web: Enquiry No. 239

Two-phase enhancement programme for Schueco’s AWS Window Range Schueco UK is undertaking a two-phase development of its highly successful AWS outward-opening window range. The first phase sees the introduction of new profiles and fittings to increase the number of opening variations. Among the latter are new double outward-opening windows without a central fixed mullion but with continuous centre seals. With sizes up to 2000 mm wide x 2500 mm high for double and 1000 mm wide x 2500 mm high for single vent windows, the system offers exciting new fenestration opportunities. Schueco UK believes that these new AWS window options will prove ideal for balconies on large-scale, inner-city residential developments where their slim lines and elegant profiles will add style to any apartment. Equally importantly, their high level of engineering excellence will ensure that usability is matched by excellent thermal performance. Web: Enquiry No. 240

The dramatic linear simplicity of the design projects real impact on the entrance façade while the architects have configured the levels of the site so that the main mass is concealed from public view and all aspects of manufacturing are kept on a single level. Sustainability is also fundamental to Airedale’s core strategy which has been translated into a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ for the building. Keith Hardcastle, Director, darntonb3 architecture comments, "The ambiance within the factory has been transformed by the integration of natural diffused light into the usually harsh environment.” Unlike conventional glazing, highly insulating Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the building is bathed with natural diffused daylight which means less artificial lighting and therefore reduced costs.

34 DOORS, WINDOWS, ROOFLIGHTS & GLAZING Refurbishment gives new life to Heal’s building

A landmark on London’s Tottenham Court Road, the Heal’s building is Grade II* listed. When it came to a major refurbishment and refit of the upper floors, Steel Window Association member, Associated Steel Window Services, was appointed to undertake the work of assessing, renovating and, where necessary, replacing more than 90 of the building’s windows. ASWS initially undertook a detailed survey of all the windows involved. A total of 70 windows were refurbished which involved repairing and overhauling the frames. Damaged glass was replaced while clear glass was substituted where panes had previously been obscured. SWA Enquiry No.415

‘Five-star’ seaside elegance Nothing could epitomise English seaside elegance more than a 19th Century mock Tudor Bed & Breakfast and tea room on the green of an unspoilt Norfolk village. So when the new owners of the Corner House luxury B&B in the idyllic location of West Runton set out to upgrade the original timber-framed sash windows as part of a major refurbishment, the choice of replacement was not one to be taken lightly. The building not only has a distinctively traditional character but its location and substantial size make it very much a part of the local landscape. Also the owners have established a ‘five-star’ reputation in everything from their extensive renovations to the décor, as the pictures on its website show. SPECTUS

Intelligent solutions for demanding mental health environments

Monaghan has developed two unique and innovative solutions for mental health environments. The i-slide® and i-leaf doorsets represent a huge leap forward in the use of anti-ligature technology in the care of the most vulnerable patients. The demands placed on buildings designed for mental health use are numerous and diverse.

Standard considerations such as security, safety, hygiene and durability take on a new significance whilst more specific factors such as anti-barricade and anti-ligature measures create a unique challenge. Only the best components have been used in the design of these two unique door products. Monaghan’s doorsets for mental health applications have been designed for use in the most rigorous environments with safety and operability at the forefront. Smart design and technology are combined to create leading edge solutions. i-slide® prevents the use of even the smallest of ligatures such as shoelaces and belts and has been developed to remove all possible ligature points around the doorset and its components. This can only be achieved with a pocket door which removes access to the top edge of the door leaf. Doors are the most common ligature points and, until now, there has been no effective alternative to remove the risk associated with pivot doors. i-slide® copes with

many difficult scenarios which can arise in mental health environments including dirty protest, barricades, bodily impacts, tampering and physical abuse. Features include simple overpanel and door removal, rigid steel pocket sidewalls with multilayer coverings, maintenance access via concealed anti-tamper fixings and options for low energy automatic operators, proximity, keypad, biometric and key switches. The i-leaf anti-barricade doorset is a safer door system for bedrooms and other observed locations. It is a robust solution supplied with all components prefitted for ease of installation and incorporates an online access control solution which gives real time audit information to a central PC. The doorset allows normally inward opening doors to be released manually or electronically in order to open outwards in an emergency. This can be done centrally from a PC or locally by staff using a key fob or card. Enquiry No.246

Gatic Slotdrain channels are the product of choice for new business park Gatic’s CastSlot and PaveSlot slotdrain channels were the products of choice for a new business park in Andover. Working with consultants TR Collier and Winvic Construction, the £11.6m project was completed earlier this year. Gatic CastSlot was specified because of its robust composition and high quality design. Manufactured from galvanised steel with a ductile iron top, it benefits from a unique hexagonal profile that slots together seamlessly with no need for bolts or additional fittings to connect the slotdrain together. It provides an effective surface water management solution for any surface finish under constant strain of traffic and heavy loads. For the paved car park areas, Gatic’s PaveSlot was recommended as a more suitable choice due to the aesthetic benefits and discreet finish required. Rob Burnett, Project Manager from Winvic says: “We’ve worked with Gatic on other large projects and it’s a partnership. Their products are quick and easy to install, and their reliable, efficient service and knowledgeable team gives us reassurance that their products are the best solutions for the project in hand. Technical support is there whenever we need it and the team is accessible whether it’s for a site visit or via other communications. Glazing Manufacturing Specialist – right on target A Scottish glazing manufacturer proved to be in a league of its own when it clinched a GEZE UK competition to win a football table which was staged to celebrate the UEFA EURO 2016 championship. While Portugal took the tournament in France, Charles Henshaw and Sons, of Edinburgh, took the table by successfully identifying Spain as the winner of the 2012 title. The entry was drawn at random from responses to a customer e-bulletin.

The table, which measures 141cm x 76cm x 90cm, is complete with 22 players, one team in yellow and blue kit, the other in blue and white kit. SE Controls’ UK manufacturing increases competitive edge after Brexit vote International smoke and environmental ventilation specialist, SE Controls, is capitalising on the drop in the pound’s exchange rate against other international currencies after the EU referendum, which has provided an additional competitive edge for its UK made product range. The company, which is a member of the national ‘Made in Britain’ initiative that recognises and promotes British manufacturing, has had a production base in the UK for the last 15 years. SE Controls’ Group Managing Director, Will Perkins, explained: “We manufacture our control systems and actuators in the UK, so our products have become more price competitive in the marketplace since the drop in sterling. “We have seen that some of our competitors that rely on imported

products, such as actuators for automated building ventilation systems, are experiencing higher product costs from their suppliers. The potential knock on effect is that some firms will inevitably need to increase prices to address the cost increase or absorb the rises, which will have an impact on their profitability.” The recently published ‘State of Trade’ report from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) appears to support these views with 65% of the survey’s respondents predicting material cost increases, while the FMB’s Chief

Executive has also highlighted the additional pressures resulting from the “plummeting exchange rate and the gathering pace of price inflation.”

our collective reputation for innovation and quality remains unchanged, irrespective of the fluctuations in currency markets,” he concluded.

“The real benefits of manufacturing in the UK are that we have more control over our quality, costs and supply chain”, continued Will Perkins. “Although the current pricing advantage being experienced by SE Controls and other British manufacturers could only be temporary,

Modular design can be both high quality and fast Contrary to general assumptions, the design process for industrial wood construction can be both high quality and fast. The advantages of modular design are clear: dimensionally accurate wood elements can help in improving both the technical design process and collaboration between partners. Prefabricated wood elements enable fast, efficient and easy design without reducing quality. Reports on the benefits of such a lean approach are convincing: In a study of companies that have applied lean construction methods, 84% report higher quality in construction and 80% experienced greater customer satisfaction. “A more efficient approach to building design is required, since the number of people worldwide in need of housing is growing at a rate of 90,000 per day. In turn, design firms benefit from shorter design times since more projects can be handled per designer per year”, Matti Kuittinen, architect and researcher from Aalto University, points out.The early

operative stages of a project are those in which most of the quality and value of the project can be ensured or lost. Fabienne Bulle from Fabienne Bulle architecte & associés Designer’s asset: the dimensional accuracy of Kerto® LVL When accelerating the speed of design, one must pay careful attention to quality. Excessive hurrying too often leads to design mistakes, which can be a significant cause of delays at a building site. Engineered wood products, such as Kerto® LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber), have more dimensional accuracy than materials such as concrete or steel, in which temperature needs to be considered. For the designer this means utilizing wood elements can make a real difference in streamlining the design process and speeding it up without endangering quality. METASWOOD
