The family dining brand, owned and run by Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, has commissioned a bespoke Flotex Vision design inspired by The Beano to create a series of vibrant recreation spaces across the country for its younger guests to enjoy.

FLOTEX PROVIDES THE FORMULA FOR FUN AT BREWERS FAYRE Flotex offers a completely unique flooring solution, combining the hardwearing, durable characteristics of a resilient floor with the warmth and comfort of a textile covering. WARWICK CASTLE ‘RAMPARTS’ UP FIRE SAFETY WITH WES+ Medieval meets modern at Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade 1 listed Warwick Castle with WES+ providing a state-of-the-art EN 54-compliant wireless fire alarm system. Merlin Entertainments, operator of Warwick Castle, has a mix of relocatable shops and restaurants located around the 10th Century site. These retail units can be repositioned during major events, which meant that there were obvious benefits to choosing a WES+ wireless system as the call points and base station can also be moved without the specialist trades required for a wired system. Aside from the fact that WES+ is the only wireless fire alarm system that is EN 54 compliant, Merlin Entertainments specified it because the distance between the retail units and castle would have made it impractical to install a wired system. The retail units, which are spaced up to 500m apart, are required to be linked to the security team in the castle. That did not present a problem for WES+ as its wireless signal is capable of covering large areas and passing through the 1m thick stone walls of the castle. The WES+

system uses Category 1 receivers throughout, ensuring maximum signal reliability and non-interference with other technologies on site. The signal is capable of passing through all commonly used construction materials such as stone, brick, concrete and steel. Ramtech Electronics also supplied a SIM card with WES+ allowing a text message to be instantly sent from the most distant retail unit to the security team in the control room at the castle if any of the fire points are triggered.

Each of the four commercial units has a separate base station and between 3-4 manual call points as well as automatic smoke and heat detectors that provide 24/7 cover. Having a separate base station allows each unit to have its own independently fire alarm system, which can be activated without resulting in the other three shops, which are away from danger, being evacuated. Although each retail unit has its own separate base station and operates independently of the others, all of them remain linked to the control room in the castle either wirelessly or, for the one located at some distance, via the SIM card’s text messaging service. This means that if any of the alarm systems are triggered, the control room can immediately identify which commercial unit is affected and alert fire crews.

“The WES+ system is very easy to use and we like the fact that although the four base stations make each retail unit independent of each other, they still all link to our control room,” said Rob Martin, Health and Safety Advisor at Warwick Castle. “When we realised that WES+ is wireless it suited our requirements perfectly as we couldn’t use a wired system due to the distance involved and moveable nature of the retail units.” If just one call point is activated in any of the four retail units, all call points and automatic detection units in that shop’s network sound the alarm. As well as identifying quickly which of the call points has been triggered, the relevant base station delivers extensive system reporting and configuration functionality. “By specifying our EN 54-compliant WES+, Warwick Castle has responded to the latest version of JCoP, a document that brings together some of the most important guidance on fire safety in recent years,” said Paul Henson, Ramtech Electronics Sales & Marketing Director. “By taking a lead from this important document and specifying our BS-EN54-25 compliant fire alarm system, they have placed the safety of visitors and the protection of this Scheduled Ancient Monument above all else.” From construction of an earthen rampart in 914, attacked in 1264, besieged in 1642 and damage by fire in 1871, choosing WES+ has proved to be another historic development at Warwick Castle. The castle belonged to the Earls of Warwick and later the Greville Family as a private home until 1978. LUNAR COPPER At the heart of the renovation and upgrading of ‘the Moon’ children’s art centre in the Belgian city of Mechelen is a new, small theatre complex – a golden cube defined by its extraordinary, creased Nordic Royal copper alloy cladding. The project’s designers, Antwerp based import.export Architecture, were inspired by associations of ‘the Moon’ with the Apollo 11 Lunar Module and its crumpled golden metal underside. This aesthetic is presented as a contemporary reflection on the intricate stone tracery of the neighbouring medieval cathedral tower, despite being achieved within a modest budget. The architects worked with specialist fabricators Ridder experimenting with pressing and folding flat metal over a

blade, resulting in a series of gentle creases – almost, but not quite, 3-D. Then, seven different designs of panels were produced using press moulds, each with folds running across at various angles and intensities. By rotating and intermingling different panels a rich, random effect was created. The verticality of the overlapping panels is retained, giving structure to the facades, but most transverse joints are not horizontal, further fragmenting the surface. Nordic Royal is produced by Aurubis, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest

copper recycler. Nordic Royal is an innovative alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving a rich golden throughcolour that is very stable. The surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen as the oxide layer thickens with exposure to the atmosphere, resulting in a protective matt finish. It behaves differently to other copper products over time and does not develop a blue or green patina. Other copper alloys from Aurubis include Nordic Bronze

and Nordic Brass – now also available preweathered. In addition to Nordic Standard copper, other Aurubis Architectural surfaces include Nordic Green and Nordic Blue factory-applied patinas - developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper gives either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment.

Polypipe Terrain, the UK’s leading plastic piping systems manufacturer, has developed new technology, designed to accommodate for the UK’s ever growing urban population. As experts in providing intelligently engineered solutions for the movement of water around tall buildings, Polypipe Terrain has designed the patented ‘Terrain Flow Control Outlet’ to assist with the growing demand for roof and podium level rainwater attenuation. Managing rainwater run-off is integral to successful Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS). The new ‘Terrain Flow Control Outlet’, when used with Polypipe’s Permavoid system, removes the need for large conventional attenuation systems.

Normally installed below ground or in underground car parks and basements, the new product intercepts and controls the flow of rainwater at the source. This is particularly useful in urban environments, where space for rainwater storage tanks can be impractical or impossible to install. With city centre rental space at a premium, traditional water storage systems use up commercial and social amenity space. The Permavoid system allows rainwater to be stored and attenuated at roof and podium level. The ‘Terrain Flow Control Outlet’ then allows the rainwater to be released at a controlled rate and conveyed using Terrain PVC or Terrain FUZE HDPE drainage systems. With these systems working together, sellable space can be created making the building more profitable, whilst complying with permissible

rainwater run off rates. The outlet fits within Polypipe Terrain’s range of large roof outlets and can be rotated within itself to one of eight different positions. This provides a different orifice cross sectional area, dependent on the required discharge rate specified from the building planning application. The flow control plate incorporates a 50mm moulded socket, in which a 50mm section of pipe can be fitted, acting as a vent for downpipes and an overflow, and gives flexibility during both the design and post installation amendments. Daniel Oliver, Product Manager at Polypipe Terrain, said: “With the number of high rise buildings in city centres increasing, we’re always looking at ways

drainage can be improved. Our complete Rainwater Interception system offers not only designers and installers standard and water discharge compliance but also allows for less compromise in the design process of the building. It opens up an array of opportunities such as blue/green roofs and added commercial space where that space is at a premium.” Flow tests have been carried out in accordance with BS EN 1253 to establish flow rates for a static head.

As a leading manufacturer and supplier of bespoke canopies, Canopies UK is championing canopies that have been engineered for purpose.

means the product you choose most likely hasn’t been designed, manufactured or installed for the building it’ll be attached to, or the ground it’ll sit in.”

“With canopy suppliers aplenty offering fast installation on seemingly costeffective ‘off the shelf’ product solutions, specifying a walkway, entrance cover, or semi-permanent building extension can be quick and easy, explains Jason Eastwood, Managing Director of Canopies UK.

Site-specific calculations: To engineer a canopy for a specific project, your chosen manufacturing partner should conduct a comprehensive site survey consisting of a number of sitespecific calculations. These measurements determine how your canopy should be manufactured and installed in order to optimise performance, longevity and visual appearance. Site-specific calculations take into consideration factors such as wind speed and snowfall, preexisting trees and roots, drains, sewage and terrain type. If the canopy is being attached to a building, other factors include the age, strength, height and construction of the wall.

“However, with product and installation quality, longevity and performance all key drivers in the specification of shelters, the canopy you choose should be engineered specifically for the building you’re designing. There are very few canopy manufacturers that engineer their products on a site-by-site basis, which

Research suggests many leading canopy manufacturers apply little engineering acumen to their canopies, which can result in maintenance and performance difficulties, additional costs and poor aesthetics. KEMPER SYSTEM ANSWERS TOWERING CHALLENGE IN NEW YORK Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR cold liquid applied membrane has been used as the waterproofing system for the tallest building in the Western hemisphere: the 1,776ft One World Trade Centre in New York.

Rising to 104 storeys and constructed in a $3.9 billion project lasting more than a decade, the One World Trade Centre, also known as the “Freedom Tower” is the centrepiece of the re-built World Trade Centre complex constructed on the site of ground zero. The 1800m2 roof is not only extremely high, but also features extensive exposed steel details and up to 400 penetrations, including the spire, with no area larger than 10ft x 10ft without some form of penetration; all of which had to be sealed effectively using a system that could be applied by a small team, with restricted access and without the use of hot works or heavy equipment. Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid-applied resin membrane was specified for the main roof and the louvre areas on lower floors. The penetrations, drains, curbs and perimeters were all protected and then overlapped by

the membrane in the larger expanse to provide a seamless, durable and reinforced waterproofing membrane across the entire roof. As the cold-applied resin bonds directly to the substrate it is particularly effective in coping with wind-uplift which was a major consideration for the chosen system.

Sustainability: Kemperol 2K-PUR resin system is 80 percent from renewable materials, which fit with the overall design goals for the project. Nearly 75 percent of 1 WTC is made from recycled or eco-friendly building materials, and the building’s green design earned LEED Gold Certification.

In line with US Building Code requirements, the system was completed with a white reflective coating to reduce the urban heat island effect. Stuart Hicks from Kemper System comments: “Few projects are as iconic or as challenging as the One World Trade Centre scheme but Kemperol 2K-PUR’s ease of application and long-term waterproofing performance made it ideally suited to both the installation challenges and the long-term requirements of the building.”

FOAM INSULATION Websters have developed a method of Polyurethane Sprayed Foam Insulation that is suitable for both old and new buildings. This continuous polyurethane foam membrane adheres to almost all surfaces and reduces heat loss by up to 80-90%.

It is an exceptional alternative to dry lining as it provides a continuous membrane of unrivalled properties. Sprayed foam insulation is particularly popular as it not only reduces heat loss but can also help keep out wind and wind driven snow; prevent tiles slipping, stops condensation and can even obviate the need for a replacement roof. INTEGRATED ALUMASC SYSTEM PROTECTS COUNCIL OFFICE ROOFS Bridgend County Borough Council’s 40 year-old Celtic Court building got a valuable new lease of life when a fully integrated Alumasc waterproofing system was installed – along with multiple products from Alumasc Exterior Building Products (; external wall insulation and render from Alumasc Facades (; and rainwater goods from Alumasc Rainwater ( The Local Authority renovated the building, for use in partnership with other Public Bodies, after the old waterproofing system had deteriorated significantly over the years and received multiple

ad hoc repairs to extend its serviceable life. Bridgend Council selected Alumasc and their Carmarthen-based registered contractor, Central Roofing, to provide an effective, long term refurbishment solution by waterproofing the roof areas of the building. Central Roofing completely removed the existing waterproofing system back to the deck where repairs were carried out to the concrete & screed. They installed a new Euroroof vapour barrier to provide some immediate protection against the elements and fitted Alumasc PIR insulation, incorporating tapered gutters, to help the roof drain better. A fully engineered insulated felt render system was then laid, onto which they applied a non-penetrative Aluminium capping system. ALUMASC Enquiry No.213.

Unusually shaped, the architecturally stunning Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen in Scotland is designed to assist in the psychological and emotional healing process for those affected by cancer. A Licensed Icynene contractor installed both Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and Icynene H2 Foam LiteTM in the pebble-shaped structure. Situated on the southern boundary of the Foresterhill site of the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen, Scotland, Maggie’s Cancer Centre is the latest such centre to provide emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer.

Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and used seven sets of the open cell Icynene H2Foam LiteTM throughout the curved structure. Spray foam crews applied the medium- density material on the lower part of the structure to a height of 2.5m in an effort to provide additional structural strength. Being 100% water blown, Icynene H2Foam ForteTM has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 1 - the lowest GWP available. In additional to providing structural strength, the closed cell product also can reject bulk water penetrating through the building envelope. Above the 2.5m mark and across the curved roofline Icynene H2Foam LiteTM was applied. Due to the unique curvature of the roofline, crews had to aid the rise of the foam by hand to ensure consistent and even coverage. As a result of using spray foam insulation throughout the design, an extremely high R-value was achieved. With a high R-value, staff and visitors to Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen will be able to work and heal in comfort all year round regardless of the season.

The centre, designed to be homely and full of warmth, aims to provide an environment where those facing cancer can gain support. The centre also intends to inspire imagination from visitors and has contributed to the architecture of the Aberdeen city area. The Design: Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, together with Scottish firm, Halliday Fraser Munro, took on the challenge to create a visually stunning structure in the shape of a pebble. The unusually-shaped single storey structure features a reinforced concrete exterior and timber interior. Steel reinforcements were used to form the structure’s unique shape. With activity and meeting rooms located on the ground floor and office space on the mezzanine, the centre features high-end interior finishes and manages to create a peaceful, welcoming and beautiful space for anyone who visits. Insulating Maggie’s Cancer Centre: A Licensed local Icynene contractor was enlisted by Halliday Fraser Munro to help insulate the centre in February 2013 using two high performance Icynene spray foam insulation products. The spray foam insulation crew used five sets of the 100% water-blown closed cell medium density

Both Icynene H2Foam LiteTM and Icynene H2Foam ForteTM contribute to creating a positive, peaceful and comfortable environment for visitors to the new centre in Aberdeen.

BAL, the UK market-leaders in full tiling solutions, have provided a full system solution of tiling products to help transform a high-spec six-bedroom mansion in Hale Barns, Cheshire. Shortlisted for the The Tile Association (TTA) Awards 2016 for Best Use of Tile in a Domestic Environment category, the project was completed over a six-month period by Dave Stott from Elite Tiling Ltd. The highspec property is a fantastic example of modern tiling, including the creation of a stunning mosaic wet room and bathroom that was previously an unused attic space and a complex hexagonal patterned tiling installation in one of the en-suite renovations. BAL tile adhesives, grouts, sealants and preparation products were specified throughout the project which included a family bathroom, and four ensuites, including master ensuite and guest ensuite, each with their own unique patterns and styles helping to create a stunning property in the Cheshire countryside. BAL worked extensively with Dave Stott including specification support from BAL’s Technical Advisory Service (TAS) and on-site support from BAL’s expert Product Support Technicians. “BAL were absolutely brilliant from start to finish, visiting the site to assist with product specification and technical advice,” said Dave. “I have always used BAL as they never let me down. Without doubt the biggest challenge of the room was the setting out of the walls to ensure perfect symmetry of the room – including intricate internal cuts to ensure the correct pattern and size continued around corner with perfection. The finished walls and floors were grouted with BAL Micromax2 Gunmetal and sealed with matching silicone.

Ensuite 2 is tiled with large format ceramic tiles (Modern Colour White and Modern Colour Silver) in brick bond pattern on the walls and glazed porcelain on the floor fixed with BAL Single Part Flexible and BAL Supercover Rapidset. PLAY THE LIGHT: TRESPA® METEON® RANGE EXTENDED WITH LUMEN Trespa has announced the launch of its new Trespa® Meteon® Lumen range. This allows architects and designers to play with the composition of light reflection on your façade. By doing so, natural light can be creatively introduced as a design element. It can be reflected, scattered, enhanced or muted according to architects’ and clients’ wishes. “Trespa Meteon Lumen changes the way designs are perceived, it changes how people interact with structures and how buildings interact with their surroundings,” says Lucas Stevens, Design Expert at Trespa. “With Trespa Meteon Lumen, you can play with the compositions of light reflection on your façade, within a single colour. This new diversity of finishes enhances design creativity and ensures façades will truly stand out.”

Bring your colour to life with reflections of light Trespa Meteon Lumen is available in three variations across eight colours. Each of the three Lumen variations is available in grey, black and white and several terra cotta tones. ‘Diffuse’ removes glossiness, reflection and texture, resulting in instant tranquillity. Scattered light gives façades a smooth, subdued appearance. ‘Oblique’ has a pleasantly uneven matt-and-gloss surface that brings a natural, weathered look to any façade. ‘Specular’ reflects its surroundings, adding liveliness with deep colours and gloss. Buildings become seamlessly integrated into their environment.

Enabling quicker methods of construction, easy to install, recyclable and readily available, it’s not surprising that plasterboard is used in so many modern building projects both residential and commercial. These benefits are reflected in research which suggests that global demand for drywall will rise around 5% per year through 2018 to roughly 10 billion square metres. Commenting on the market report, the Gypsum Products Development Association (GPDA), which represents the UK and Ireland’s plasterboard manufacturers, says plasterboard has justly earned its reputation as a versatile building product with many uses and suitability for modern methods of construction. FLOORING CHALLENGE MET BY REMMERS The new 1,600m2 workshop facilities at The Trade Centre Wales in Neath, required a breathable anti-slip system to be installed due to the uncertain moisture levels of the relatively new substrate. The installers TPS360, measured the moisture levels during the installation and to facilitate the curing process, temporary heating and ventilation systems were used to reduce any moisture present. A FeRFA Type 3 high build floor coating system was then applied in two coats. Remmers BS3000 SG was selected as a high quality, damp tolerant resin, with a wide application spectrum and VOC free properties. ADD 250 Polymer Beads were then added to provide an anti-slip, textured finish to give a surface that remained easy to clean. The coating system was installed to a timed scheduled which tied in with other key equipment installation phases. REMMERS Enquiry No.423.

Apartment interiors showing Vicaima grooved Satin White in Easi-Fit door kit

Vicaima innovative door designs have been featured prominently in a landmark city centre project for Crest Nicholson, which sees a modern apartment complex created in a former 1930’s iconic utility building.

Atrium showing Vicaima Dekordor 3D entrance doors on every floor

VICAIMA TURN ON DESIGN FLAIR AT ELECTRICITY HOUSE Electricity House has stood at the very heart of Bristol City centre since its construction in the late 1930’s and was perhaps best known as the home of the South West Electricity Board. Designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also famously created the much loved red telephone box, this building has commanded attention for generations. With its Portland stone façade and magnificent curved frontage, the building embodies the grace of the Art Deco era. Now this bygone treasure has taken on a new lease of life following its lovingly reimagined and inspired regeneration by Quality developer Crest Nicholson. They have created luxury living space by blending period charm with contemporary interior design. Of course inspired design requires inspirational products and so Crest chose Vicaima to enhance the apartment entrance doors with Dekordor 3D Portaro

matching door and frame systems. This was further augmented by a surrounding and matching wall panelling which incorporated distinctive back lit apartment numbering. Performance was to client requirements which included certified FD30 fire doors with a roller lock and eye viewer. Dekordor 3D provides a horizontal and highly tactile grain effect and Crest selected 3D Grey finish to provide the perfect tonal contrast to the wall and floor covering. 3D Grey was also chosen for the communal areas, including the striking and visually dominating atrium area, where occupants enjoy a panoramic view of multiple floor levels, displaying Vicaima doors at every level. Inside the apartments and penthouses themselves, Vicaima Satin White doors with Easi-Fit frames were selected. These ultra-smooth white lacquered doors provide a luxurious look and feel at every turn and fit perfectly with the superior

build quality synonymous with this project. The design has been further embellished with the addition of a refined groove pattern, which was also carried through onto the architraves to add yet another design element. Overall the project is a fine example of regeneration at its best and Vicaima products are sure to grace this reincarnation for generations to come. Vicaima offer an extensive range of innovative design options, with fire, acoustic and security performance for luxury housing and modern apartment living space. For further details about these and other products from the many Vicaima collections, visit the Vicaima website alternatively, call 01793 532333 for additional information. Enquiry No.224

FUTURE-PROOF HIGH PERFORMANCE WINDOWS Months of rumours and speculation are now at an end as Profile 22 launches not one but two of the industry’s most eagerly awaited window and door systems. Hailed as the biggest new product introduction in the window industry for a decade, Profile 22 has unveiled Optima, developed to be the most advanced products of their type available in the UK today. Developed specifically with commercial sectors in mind, and backed by the Profile 22 Approved Window Contractors scheme, Optima offers a compelling choice for the professional specifier. Behind this launch is a radical rethink of each of the key processes in the production of a window and door system for the 21st Century: extrusion processes that ensure superb quality and consistency whilst protecting the environment through reduced energy and ecological impact and products that easily satisfy current technical and aesthetic demands by anticipating those of many years ahead. Like all new supermarkets, Waitrose’s flagship store in Chester required good access; entrances are prime positions for displays that influence buyer behaviour and need to allow multiple shoppers to enter and exit simultaneously even when manoeuvring trolleys or weighed down with bags. At the same time, entrances needed to complement the design of the building. Architectural glazing specialists Glassolutions had created a unique curtain wall system that allows the glass façades to visually float. So when it came to the automatic doors for the Waitrose building, it needed a partner renowned for elegant, integrated solutions and GEZE UK fitted the bill perfectly. GEZE UK Enquiry No.425.

Association of Chief Police Officers, these doors are among the most secure on the market.

Whether working on a new build or refurbishment project, the rising cost of energy means that minimising heat loss is more important than ever. Architects and specifiers are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, to meet both legislative demands and the changing needs of homeowners. A good UD-value (the U-value of the fitted door) is of the utmost importance when choosing products, but builders still face the challenge of achieving high levels of insulation without compromising on style, security or convenience. Leading garage and entrance door manufacturer Hörmann has paid close attention to all of these factors when designing its popular ranges. The company’s ThermoPro and ThermoPlus steel entrance door collections are a prime example. Offering excellent

Another ground-breaking duo of highly insulated entrance doors from Hörmann is the ThermoSafe and ThermoCarbon. These aluminium doors feature some of the lowest UD-values available, at just 0.8W/(m².K) and 0.47W/(m².K). With 9-point locking as standard on the ThermoCarbon, and 5-point locking on the ThermoSafe, they are also highly secure.

UD-values, up to 1.1W/(m2.K) and 0.82W/(m2.K) respectively, they benefit from rigid steel polyurethanefilled door leaves of 46mm and 65mm thick. Therefore, these doors are ideal for insulation-conscious refurbishment projects and low carbon new builds, and as a result, they will have a noticeable impact on energy As with most Hörmann entrance doors, a wide range of bills. finishes, colours, glazing options and matching side Security is also a key feature of Hörmann’s ThermoPro and elements are available, whatever the budget. THE IMPORTANCE OF MOVEMENT JOINTS IN FLOOR TILE INSTALLATIONS Fluctuations in temperature and moisture cause movement in the subfloor and lead to cracks transferring to the tile covering, or worse, cause a loss of bond between the covering and the substrate which can result in overall damage to the surface covering. For this reason, industry standards state that all tile and stone installations should include the use of movement joints. In many circumstances movement joints are overlooked, however, a lack of movement joints can be a contributing factor to many different types of failure. Furthermore, if you do not include movement joints in the specification liability for any resulting problems could fall to the architect, even if the problem doesn’t directly relate to a lack of movement joints, as it’s the architect’s responsibility to specify the type of joint and location of them. The question, however, is how do you provide the movement joints necessary to ensure a durable installation and what movement

joints should you use? Movement joints need to go through the tile and screed covering and therefore need to be designed at specification. Understanding the types of movement that can occur, namely drying shrinkage, differential movement, deflection movement, structural movement, moisture movement and thermal movement, will help when deciding which type of movement joint will best counteract the resulting stresses. In floors there are two basic types of movement joints, structural and non-structural. Both

types will be subject to different movement patterns, for example, whether movement will occur from the tiled covering through to the floor slab or just in the tile and screed covering, and this will affect the type of joint needed to prevent damage.

Keston Boilers has supplied three 55kW Heat Only twin flue boilers and a Frame and Header Kit to Lancing College in Lancing, West Sussex, which have been installed as part of a refurbishment project to improve the reliability of the heating system in one of the accommodation blocks and reduce overall running costs. The new Heat Only Boilers were installed on Keston’s Frame and Header Kit, which was delivered in prefabricated modules that were then quickly and easily assembled on site by Chris Smith, Heating Engineer. The system was installed in a new plant room within the building, eradicating the need for a long pipe run, and serves 60 radiators. KESTON BOILERS Enquiry No.435.

Ideal Commercial Boilers has extended the recently launched IMAX EL range with additional models ranging from 715kW to 1240kW. Pairing two Imax Xtra EL condensing and floor standing boilers side by side, the new extended range offers greater output flexibility in a compact and lightweight package for ease of installation, even within the trickiest of applications. Further expanding the flexibility whilst still retaining a compact size which, when delivered, fits through standard doorways and, once installed, has a small footprint, the range extension outperforms the 2015 ErP requirements as well as offering very low NOx Class 6 peformance for maximum points on the BREEAM scale. The lemurs at Bristol Zoo are enjoying a new enclosure that is being warmed by the latest Ecodan heat pump technology from Mitsubishi Electric. Earlier this year, installers Gregor Heating recommended an Ecodan PUHZ-W50VHA2 airsource heat pump to keep the space in the new 12m2enclosure at a cosy temperature for its residents. Richard Blackmore of Gregor Heating explains the challenge: "The enclosure is fully insulated, which makes it perfect for the installation of heat pump technology. However, unlike a domestic installation, the animals must be kept at a constant heat of 22oC, and the system must have the capacity to increase this to 26oC in the event that the lemurs are unwell." The Ecodan PUHZ-W50HA2 heat pump has the smallest capacity in the range, and the 5kW unit is perfect for this type of application as it operates with outside temperatures as low as -20oC.

deeper than the visible floor which is packed with wood chip to serve as the 'real' floor for the animals. The brief therefore was to find a solution that would heat the enclosure to the required temperature, and that would also be able to penetrate 750ml of insulation. In order to ensure that inquisitive lemurs would not tamper with the heat pump, it was disguised using a foliage print added by Bristol-based specialists Hydrowrap. Gregor heating also installed a perimeter heating system - which ensures that the pipes are hidden by a specially installed 'skirting board' at the perimeter of the enclosure. The integration of heat pump technology has allowed Bristol Zoo to meet the precise requirements of the lemur in a manner which is both controllable and energy efficient.

For more information visit: An added challenge on this project was that the base of the lemur enclosure is three quarters of a metre

TIME TO REVISIT RELUCTANT SMEs WITH AN LED PROPOSITION? If only life were that simple… LEDs have conquered pretty much every lighting application – but offices have been slower than others to make the switch, largely because the prevailing technology – T5 – is still reasonably efficient for diffused area lighting, and the numbers just haven’t quite added up for capital expenditure on a big LED upgrade. Therefore, the recessed louvered fluorescent lamp fittings that became the norm in offices from the 80s onwards to reduce flicker on screens are still commonplace even though screens have changed a lot since the 1980s, as has the whole way we work. Where GU10 halogens have been fitted in an office, there can be some reluctance to make the seemingly straightforward switch to GU10 LED’s because units small enough to fit neatly into existing apertures may have relatively low output with too focussed a beam to flood the area with sufficient light. Yet these beams can help you to tailor lighting to individual workstations if you have it under good control. Curiously, bigger, five-figure projects have been more likely to get the go ahead, while SME’s who have to look for a faster ROI are lagging behind and missing out not just on energy savings but also the potential productivity boost that comes from better lighting. However, as LEDs get more and more efficient and controllable, quicker paybacks are unlocked. So, while a general unwillingness to commit to big projects may have been a constraint, overall the turning of the tide is unstoppable now. It is time to look again at projects which did not quite ‘stack up’ financially first time round because the general economic uncertainty was putting a damper on capital expenditure. People efficiency Without doubt the switch to LED delivers massive cost savings, and is usually top of the list after an energy audit – but it’s about more than headline energy saving. Office space doesn’t come cheap, and whether you

are catering for 10 people or 1,000 it is essential to optimise their productivity, and the right office environment is key to that. Today, office designers and managers increasingly focus on employee productivity and well-being, in addition to energy and operational efficiency. Lighting can be personalised at an individual level, while at the same time reducing energy use and lowering maintenance costs. The right lighting also supports sustainability goals while improving the working environment for those in the office. Of course, the least costly light of all is the one that is switched off and so controlling the lighting is an essential part of the installation. Just because LED’s consume less power does not mean that you can cut corners with control and leave them switched on when not needed: timing, zoning and dimming are now the norm. In larger installations, these are likely to involve Wi-Fi, power line or, increasingly, dedicated KNX open protocol cabling. In SME environments, PIR detection and local timed/zoned switching are used. PIR detectors come in many shapes and forms but as with any device, caveat emptor. Yes the price has fallen as the market has grown but there is a bottom line below which you should not go – especially when switching LEDs. The PIR switches have to be able to cope with the initial surge current. If they are not actually tried and tested as being suitable for use with LED’s, then they are not going to be a reliable option in a busy workplace where switching may be frequent. Check the specification, check the box, and look for branded and guaranteed quality. Smart wall switches offer options for programmed timing, delay switching, switching in response to lux levels or noise and remote control. However, they all seem to share one problem: the LED lights seem to flicker when they are switched off. This is because two-wire (per Building Regulations) smart switches need to draw a small amount of power through the switched live connection to operate the switch whilst in standby, and this

voltage/current within the circuit will cause the LED lamps to glow or flash. Such currents are far too low to have caused an issue with old CFL lighting. Eliminating LED flicker Until now, there has not been much you can do about it. Changing to a different LED or changing the automatic light switch, do not provide a longterm solution. Now Timeguard has developed a patented device for universal use that creates an electrical environment for automatic switches and LED lamps to operate in harmony without having to modify the automatic switch or LED lamp by diverting the current from the LED or CFL lamp. This new Automatic Switch Load Controller is small, inexpensive, easy to install, slips neatly through a standard 50mm ceiling aperture and you only need one per switching circuit. As it works with just about any make of smart switch and LED or CFL lamps, you can go out and fix existing customer problems at a stroke, with the added advantage of built in surge & current inrush suppression. In short, keep it simple and there is nothing stopping every small office or department sharing the benefits of controlled LED lighting.

HEATING AND VENTILATION SOLUTIONS TO MEET ALL LOCAL AUTHORITY AND SOCIAL HOUSING REQUIREMENTS Johnson & Starley, CIH Housing, 28-30 June 2016, Manchester Central, Stand D48 At the Chartered Institute of Housing's 2016 Exhibition, Johnson & Starley is exhibiting a comprehensive range of heating and ventilation products that meet the needs of housing associations, local authorities, housebuilders and contractors.

energy efficiency with low running costs, low NOx emissions and low operational noise levels. Models are available with or without DHW provision.

Housing professionals involved in the specification of energy efficient H&V solutions will be able to discuss specific project requirements with a company that has unrivalled experience in this market through countless installations of its warm air heating, gas condensing boiler and ventilation products. Johnson & Starley's warm air heating range, for example, has traditionally been the most important element of the company's expertise, with local authorities and social housing providers continuing to specify successive generations of these reliable, high efficiency units. The latest WarmCair condensing warm air heaters, with thermal efficiencies of up to 98%, combine high

been added to the line-up.

Gas fired QuanTec condensing boilers are also now being widely specified for both new build and refurbishment projects, with the design of the highly energy efficient QuanTec HR28C with Integral Passive Flue Gas Heat Recovery(PFGHR) condensing combi boiler particularly popular. The QuanTec HR28C is not only possibly the most efficient boiler on the market of its kind but also one of the smallest as it has no addition in height or add on for the PFGHR. This is now available in a combined package with the Aquair heating interface unit (HIU) and is ideal for the replacement of old centralised heating and especially warm air systems. To extend the potential application range of QuanTec, an LPG version of the 28KW combination boiler has also

The new Aquair downflow S-36 water to air space heater is designed for use with a vast range of renewables and traditional heating sources. It offers all the benefits of centralised heating and can replace a warm air heater whilst also making use of warm air ducting already installed. Alternatively, it can be run in conjunction with an existing wet heating system to provide heating to additional rooms such as extensions, loft or garage conversions, and also has the option of providing unheated air for cooling purposes in warmer weather. The housing market continues to specify Johnson & Starley's highly efficient ventilation technology for new build and refurbishment applications. Today's new housing developments are noteworthy for their high levels of insulation, which has the adverse effect of increasing the risk of condensation and mould growth. This can lead to potentially unhealthy living conditions and increased the risk of damage to the building's fabric. Therefore Johnson & Starley advocates that any heating specification must go hand in hand with the correct ventilation system, whether for new build or refurbishment projects. The company provides solutions that meet all social housing and local authority requirements, ranging from simple extract fans to centralised whole house ventilation systems, cooker hoods and sophisticated highly energy efficient heat recovery systems.

LIQUID GOLD AS TEAM SCOOPS TOP ROOFING AWARD Leading liquid roofing manufacturer Centaur Technologies and roofing contractor Western Flat Roofing Company have been crowned as the winners in the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing category at the prestigious UK Roofing Awards 2016. The two firms won the coveted award for a challenging refurbishment project at Exeter University. The scheme used Centaur Technologies’ Centech PU 25 liquid roofing system and was completed by approved contractor Western Flat Roofing Company in just four weeks. Centaur beat off stiff competition from some old names in the liquid roofing industry to take the award at a glamorous ceremony, which was hosted by BBC Breakfast TV’s Steph McGovern at the London Metropole Hotel on 13 May.

Phil Richardson, managing director of Centaur Technologies, said: “Despite the wealth of experience that our team has in the liquid roofing industry, our business is a relative newcomer, so we were absolutely delighted to take first place in this category. Receiving the award was a crowning moment for everyone who was involved in this complex project. It underlines the pedigree of our highly skilled team, the quality of our product and the nature of our partnerships with our approved contractors. “We work closely with specifiers, contractors and building owners to develop complete systems, which are tailored to their needs. This award highlights our commitment to best practice within the industry and the emphasis we place on attention to detail and the quality we demand at every stage

of a project, from developing site surveys and roof reports to delivering specifications and long-term single point guarantees.” Charles Shazell, managing director at Western Flat Roofing, added: “It was fantastic to win this award. We’ve been a Centaur installer for some years and have worked extensively with the Centech product, so we understand its capabilities. It helped us to overcome the confines of the roof and the restrictions of the job, where we had to work within shorter hours and minimise disruption to nearby residents. I’m really proud of the team that delivered a superb project that was a worthy winner at the awards.” The original asphalt roof on the South Cloisters roof at Exeter University, which was covered in chippings, was overlaid with a new Centech PU 25 system to provide a seamless roof and allow water to drain from the surface. The team was tasked with improving the thermal performance of the roof, but there were restrictions on the thickness of insulation that could be used because of the upstand heights to windows and cavity trays in the adjoining brick walls. Centaur Technologies’ 50mm Centech PIR provided

the best U-value without having to raise the details. The scheme required complex detailing around ducts, ventilation pipes and rooflights. Western Flat Roofing also replaced all 31 rooflights with Centech triple glazed rooflights and installed a freestanding edge barrier to allow safe access to the roof for future plant maintenance. An anti-slip walkway was also installed. The project was scheduled to be completed within five weeks. Despite the complex nature of the roof, it was finished within four weeks. Centaur technologies regularly inspected the works as part of its Centaur Quality Partnership programme. A 25 year guarantee for labour and materials was provided on completion of the project. For further information on Centaur Technologies or Centech PU, please call the enquiry line on 01772 453107 or visit Enquiry No.248

The success of REHAU’s most recent Passivhaus seminar is evidence, the company says, of the demand from across the construction industry for information and advice on this growing sector of the market. Even on a day when the London transport system was severely disrupted by a rail fire, the event held at the Siemens Crystal building in Docklands attracted around 100 delegates. The vast majority of these were architects and specifiers keen to learn more about the requirements of the three new Passivhaus classifications and the range of products from REHAU which are Passivhaus certified. Roger Burton of architectural consultancy Nvirohaus delivered the introductory presentation on the principles of Passivhaus. Then, Tony Harbour, the head of the REHAU Hub specification centre in the London Building Centre, and Kevin O’Neill, one of REHAU’s Commercial Managers, presented on heating and cooling and thermal efficiency in Passivhaus building, focusing on products such as the REHAU AWADUKT Thermo ground and REHAU Polytec 50 curtain walling system. £12 MILLION CROSSRAIL TEST CENTRE COMES TO COMPLETION THE NEW state-of-the-art test facility for Crossrail to showcase what Boris Johnson has deemed ‘the best of British design and engineering’, is now complete at Bombardier’s site in Derby.

“Bombardier’s £1 billion contract with the national rail giant meant that a new building was needed to accommodate the construction of 66 planned new trains for the UK’s developing rail network. New features for these trains include air-conditioned, Wi-Fi and 4G enabled carriages with the capacity to transport 1,500 train users. “The test centre itself has been created to test and sell trains to clients – making it a dual functioning facility with the capability to house four complete trains within the 250 metre long building, as well as showcase the completed sets to clients. There are also office spaces and welfare facilities for up to 90 staff.

CPMG Architects’ designs have been realised by Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, to create the 10,400 square metre building, which has formed part of Bombardier’s existing Litchurch Lane plant. Paul Bodill, the project’s director at CPMG, said: “This was a major project that we are proud to be involved in. Work to build the test centre started on site early last year and now it’s great to see the functional and modern building that will have a huge impact on the UK’s rail network complete.

“Our designs have enabled testing to be carried out in a safe environment incorporating the highest spec materials for a contemporary build which is fit for purpose. We also value sustainability in our designs and have included, among other energy saving features, a high-performance thermal enclosure that also maximises daylight levels inside and is very low maintenance. “We’re very pleased with the end result and delighted to play a part in bringing jobs to the Midlands Engine and supporting the modernisation of the UK rail network.” Crossrail - the joint venture between Transport for London (TfL) and the Department for Transport (DfT) - has been instrumental in bringing about huge change to the UK’s rail services. The company aims to support the country’s

regional regeneration areas through manufacturing, design and economic development – seen with the work being done in the East Midlands. Crossrail will become known as the Elizabeth line when it opens through central London in 2018. Andy Ward, director of operations at Balfour Beatty, said: “We are delighted that the new V Shop Facility has been completed for our customer Bombardier Transportation. The successful delivery of the scheme was a direct result of the close collaborative working between Bombardier, Balfour Beatty, CPMG Architects, Scott Hughes Structural Engineers, and our other design and build supply chain partners.” CPMG attended the new building’s official unveiling by transport minister Patrick McLoughlin at an event attended by 60 people. He said: “The opening of this building is a historic moment for Derby, the UK and the rail industry as a whole.”

SWISH BUILDING PRODUCTS MARKS JOINT 100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF PVC AND ACE, WW1 BIPLANE Around 100 years ago, at roughly the time this venerable, biplane was taking to the air, industrial chemist, Friedrich Heinrich August Klatte became the first inventor to receive a patent for PVC with a polymerization method for vinyl chloride using sunlight. In recognition of the event, Swish Building Products, the UK’s leading supplier of PVC roofline and rainwater systems, thought it would be a great idea to build this 1/8th scale model of the World War 1 Sopwith Camel biplane, making the wings, fuselage and control surfaces from their off-the-shelf cellular PVC facia and soffit boards. The Sopwith Camel first flew on 22nd December 1916 and went on to be the most successful allied fighter with 1294 victories to its name. Of the 5490 built, only eight are thought to remain. The Swish model [below] was painstakingly crafted over several weeks and faithfully reflects the detail, balance and elegance of the original machine. To further mark these significant Centenary milestones and in response to customer demand, Swish will also launch new ranges of their fascia and soffit boards in cream and white foil finishes. These will join Swish’s wider and fully integrated range of robust, cellular PVC profiles. Like the existing products, they will not discolour with

time, are weather resistant and virtually maintenance free. Modern Swish PVC rainwater systems are ideal for those who want to specify quality products that have a significantly reduced carbon footprint. These products marry a recycled core with a virgin skin and save 70% of the CO2 that would be produced by manufacturing with virgin material only. Swish cellular PVC also represents an environmentally responsible use of plastics. It is manufactured in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Swish takes its environmental responsibilities  very seriously and has an Environmental Policy and Plan under which a continuous programme of targets, actions and monitoring ensures that the company uses resources efficiently and that energy and water consumption and waste of any kind is kept to a minimum. Few other materials are as versatile or able to meet such demanding specifications. For further information on Swish Building Products: Tel 01827 317 200 Enquiry No.250

VORTICE EMBRACES BIM Building Information modelling (BIM) is becoming more widely used as architects and specifiers see the benefit in time saving and accuracy that it can offer for their plans and modelling. Vortice products are now listed on the BIM Object database and drawings/specifications are free to download. General Manager Kevin Hippey said: “Embracing technology is vital as part of the service we offer our customers. Our technical team has used CAD for planning purposes for a long time and we want to make it as easy as possible for potential customers to specify our products for their projects; BIM therefore is the obvious evolution for this.” The big benefit of BIM is that all those interacting with a building can optimise their actions, with entire teams working to the same standards to produce the best possible project outcomes. BIM brings together all the components for a building so different aspects of the design can be integrated more effectively.

BRITAIN’S ORIGINAL COMPOSITE DOOR BRAND IS NOW BIM COMPLIANT Permadoor is the original manufacturer of specialist composite doors in the UK and as such the company intuitively believes that it has a responsibility to continue leading the charge for innovation and new product development for such products. The company has more than 25 years experience in the affordable homes, new build and social housing markets and is the UK’s number one supplier to the social housing sector. Permadoor’s extensive experience includes working with local authorities, housing association registered providers and contractors on refurbishment and new build projects across the UK. A commitment to Building Information Modelling (BIM) was therefore inevitable and part of the company’s commitment to its public sector clients. Permadoor’s commitment to BIM Level 2 has been completed and, despite extensive publicity surrounding the advent of BIM Permadoor is one of just a handful of residential composite door manufacturers that have made such a commitment. Although it was the first to bring these products to market in due course they were followed by others that also sought public sector endorsement. It is surprising therefore those other producers have been slower in committing to BIM. In theory, says Permadoor Marketing Manager Alan Calverley, that does make the selection process somewhat simpler: “Permadoor is unusual in being totally committed to the social and private housing sectors and especially in public housing there is increasing awareness and commitment to BIM, even if the overall uptake has been somewhat slow. “Permadoor has the range, the experience and, as it proves with BIM, the commitment to the market.” To find out more, visit or call 01684 595200.
