FLOWCRETE UK CEMENTS PARTNERSHIP WITH TOTAL PROTECTION

Flowcrete UK has undertaken the extensive refurbishment of a large garage and car park area owned by Cambridge Council alongside Total Protections, its exclusive applicator partner for social housing projects in the South of England. This project exemplifies the ability of resin flooring manufacturer Flowcrete UK and specialist coatings contractor Total Protection to provide clients with every product and service required for a large-scale social housing flooring project. When Flowcrete UK and Total Protection reviewed the 1,580m2 site a number of issues were recorded, including water migrating from the car park’s top deck to the lower deck, cracking, leaking gullies and undulations in the concrete slab causing ponding. The Managing Director of Total Protection Ltd, Nick DiCienzo, said: “This project really showcases the benefits of our partnership with Flowcrete UK for the South’s social housing sector, as this was a difficult task that required a wealth of specialist knowledge as well as multiple high performance products. STIRLING LLOYD’S DECSEAL STILL PERFORMS WELL 27 YEARS LATER

Manchester’s stunning new elliptical library walk link was designed to connect two of the city’s historic buildings – it needed doors that not only allowed people to enter and exit with ease, but reflected the dramatic glass architecture. GEZE UK was appointed by Waagner Biro to install Slimdrive SC automatic curved sliding doors to create the two main entrances in to the Library Walk Link, as well as four Slimdrive SL NT automatic sliding doors providing access in to Manchester’s Library and Town Hall. To reflect the unique curve of the building, two gently curved automatic bi-parting sliding glass doors were installed at either end of the building. GEZE LTD

West Street Car Park, a busy town centre MSCP in Leighton Buzzard is still benefitting from long-term protection offered by of Stirling Lloyd’s Decseal waterproofing and wearing course systems 27 years after the initial application. Originally installed in 1989 the system was found to still be well bonded and continuing to perform well in October 2015 when inspected by Bedfordshire CC and Term Contractors Amey. Decseal was still protecting the decks from water ingress and corrosion – with the refurbishment work only requiring the skid resistance to be enhanced by application of Decseal Wearing Course to the driving aisles where some wear had occurred in the intervening 27 years. The fact that Decseal was able to be overcoated after such a length of time, significantly reduced the cost and duration of the refurbishment work, saving money, disruption and enables clients to increase their car parks service life to over 50 years. Hospitals are failing to provide proper facilities for thousands of out-patients and visitors, yet that could be transformed simply by installing appropriate toilets. Some 30% of NHS users in the UK are disabled, and hospitals are the second most inaccessible buildings for them. One in 284 people in the UK need a Changing Places toilet. Yet of the UK’s 2300 hospitals, not even 1% have the ‘bigger and better’ accessible (disabled) facility, even though they are now included in ‘best practice’ Department of Health building guidelines (Health Building Notes 00-02 sanitary spaces). “On average we visit the toilet every couple of hours or so,” elaborates Robin Tuffley, Clos-o-Mat marketing manager. “Outpatients and visitors therefore often need to go to the toilet when on hospital premises. For many people, who need the help of a carer, a standard accessible toilet is inappropriate, lacking the space and equipment they need, or potentially unsafe. A Changing Places toilet meets their needs, and provides an appropriate, hygienic and safe environment.” TOTAL HYGIENE

Forbo worked collaboratively with the developer, the main contractor Morgan Sindall, and Manchesterbased project architect Fletcher Rae to agree the final specification.

Enquiry No.220. www.mclink.co.uk/911-220 The Create Space tiles were deemed superior in terms of quality

FORBO’S FLOOR COVERINGS ADD STYLE AT MATALAN’S NEW HQ The key objective for office areas was to deliver a high-quality finish with a ‘wow’ factor. The Create Space collection of plain and linear patterned Tessera carpet tile ranges was selected as it met all construction and performance demands and was deemed superior to other products under consideration in terms of quality, overall finish and the design flexibility offered. The plain, single colourway of Create Space 1 in Ebonite was combined with the distinctive striped loop design of Create Space 2 in Licorice to deliver a visually

interesting floor layout to fit with the shape of the building and flow of the furniture throughout the offices. Surestep and Safestep safety vinyls were installed in shower rooms, kitchens and other back of house areas where clean, crisp and slip resistant finishes were needed. For more public spaces and common front of house areas such as stairwells, where durable, resilient flooring with a more prestigious feel was required, linoleum from the Marmoleum Piano and Fresco collections was used.

Allura Luxury Vinyl Tiles in an oak wood effect offered an ideal option for the staff canteen

The combination of performance, value for money and realism made Forbo’s Allura Luxury Vinyl Tiles in an oak wood effect an ideal solution for the staff canteen. Completing the integrated floor scheme, Eternal General Purpose Vinyl was fitted in one of the meeting rooms and 12mm grey Nuway Tuftiguard was installed at the main entrance to the headquarters. Commenting on Forbo’s products and service, John Schofield, Morgan Sindall Senior Design Manager, said: “The Forbo materials met Maro’s brief in terms of quality, life expectancy plus ease of maintenance and cleaning requirements. Forbo put a lot of time and effort into the project in terms of providing numerous samples and alternative colours. Over the last 10 years or so, whenever I have worked with Forbo on various projects, they have always provided exemplary customer service and have been great to work with.” For more information please call 0844 822 3928 or visit www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/offices

Association of Chief Police Officers, these doors are among the most secure on the market. Another ground-breaking duo of highly insulated entrance Whether working on a new build or refurbishment project, the rising cost of energy means that minimising heat loss is more important than ever. Architects and specifiers are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, to meet both legislative demands and the changing needs of homeowners. A good UD-value (the U-value of the fitted door) is of the utmost importance when choosing products, but builders still face the challenge of achieving high levels of insulation without compromising on style, security or convenience. Leading garage and entrance door manufacturer Hörmann has paid close attention to all of these factors when designing its popular ranges. The company’s ThermoPro and ThermoPlus steel entrance door collections are a prime example. Offering excellent

doors from Hörmann is the ThermoSafe and UD-values, up to 1.1W/(m2.K) and 0.82W/(m2.K) ThermoCarbon. These aluminium doors feature some of respectively, they benefit from rigid steel polyurethane- the lowest UD-values available, at just 0.8W/(m².K) and filled door leaves of 46mm and 65mm thick. Therefore, 0.47W/(m².K). With 9-point locking as standard on the these doors are ideal for insulation-conscious ThermoCarbon, and 5-point locking on the ThermoSafe, refurbishment projects and low carbon new builds, and they are also highly secure. as a result, they will have a noticeable impact on energy As with most Hörmann entrance doors, a wide range of bills. finishes, colours, glazing options and matching side Security is also a key feature of Hörmann’s ThermoPro and elements are available, whatever the budget. Anti-bacterial wall and door protection is essential in the prevention of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) and has been proven to prevent the growth of up to 99% of harmful microbes and bacteria.

Anti-Bacterial impact protection sheet proves its worth Steve Woodhead Sales Director for Intastop, a leading wall and door protection manufacturer, commented: “Doors and walls are not only costly when it comes to repairs or maintenance but they can harbour a myriad of infectious microbes. That’s why many healthcare and public facilities opt for protection with an antibacterial sheet which supports their bid to win the war on HAIs.” Intastop’s Hygienilac antibacterial impact protection sheet provides the perfect solution for unsightly or damaged walls and doors and assists infection control within hospitals, combating the spread of harmful bacteria such as C-difficile, MRSA, Salmonella, Listeria and E.coli. This particular sheet works by an added biocidally proactive ingredient, Hygienilac, which prevents bacteria and other microbes accessing nutrients and

therefore disabling their growth. The added ingredient permeates the entire 2mm sheet so that if the surface is scratched it continues to provide protection. “Maintenance and replacement are significantly reduced when using door and wall protection which have a positive impact on budgets. In addition, the anti-bacterial properties are an added advantage and if the sheet is damaged, it continues to protect against the spread of harmful bacteria, which supports healthcare facilities’ infection control measures,” continued Steve. Trusted by Trusts A number of NHS Trust and private hospitals have experienced these advantages first hand and are keen advocates of specifiying door and wall protection whenever and wherever

possible. Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital, The Chesterfield, commissioned wall protection from Intastop after its walls in theatre corridors and waiting areas were suffering from high levels of unsightly and unhygienic impact damage. Gerri Morgan, Supplies and Facilities Manager, commented: “It was evident that we needed to do something to protect the walls of the hospitals not only for aesthetic reasons but also to safeguard patients from infection. Intastop was able to provide protection in a variety of colours and with the added benefits of antibacterial properties too. We are delighted with the visual appearance and the practicality of the wall protection from Intastop and are already looking at other areas in the hospital that could benefit from this type of investment too.”

Videx Launches New GSM PRO Door Entry System New System Provides Greater Security and Freedom at the Same Time Videx has launched a new GSM door entry system that uses mobile technology to communicate and operate doors, automatic gates, car parks and remote site applications. The GSM PRO intercoms are available in kit form or as part of the popular 4000 Series modular door entry system for single call button applications up to 50 apartments all with the facility to divert to three additional numbers if the first is busy or unanswered. Steve Natton, Special Projects Manager at Videx UK, said: “We’re excited to introduce our new GSM system as it’s the next generation of Videx GSM that provides users with much greater security and freedom. The intercom enables people to answer calls to their front door or gate from their mobile phone or land line so they never have to miss that important visitor and are made aware of who has visited even when they are not there. The systems provide spoken call progress information so that the visitor is informed how the call is progressing. Four call progress LEDs also offer the visitor a visual indication of the call’s status.” Programming is carried out via SMS messaging or using the micro USB connection and specially developed PC software. The intercoms also include an exit button input, auxiliary inputs and outputs and a dry contact relay. Kits are also supplied with a surface or flush housing, antenna and 2A power supply unit. Steve added: “An exciting new feature to GSM PRO is the integrated proximity access control (for up to 1000 users), administrators can remotely manage their access control user fobs and cards, eliminating the need for the engineer to visit

site to enrol, modify or delete users. The reader is concealed behind the call button name plate window meaning the door panel is no larger than the previous version that doesn’t carry this feature and, importantly, is half the length of previous proximity access door panels. Programming options are by text or via the PC software and an optional desk mount proximity reader is also available to enrol large numbers of users quickly. In addition to the 1000 user proximity access control, there is also a 1000 user dial to open access control where users can dial the intercom number to release a door or gate without being charged for the call.” VIDEX SECURITY LIMITED Enquiry No.205 www.mclink.co.uk/912-205

KEE Safety ensures optimal safety with KEEGUARD® Ladder Kit To provide optimal safety to those working at height, Kee Safety, a global supplier of fall protection equipment, has launched KeeGuard® Ladder Kit, a permanently fixed guardrail system that is used in conjunction with safety ladders and self-closing gates. KeeGuard® Ladder Kit has been designed to provide a working at height safety solution that complies with EN 14122-4. This standard recommends that ‘to prevent falling through the access opening at arrival areas, the opening shall be provided with a gate.’ It also states that at drop edges of arrival areas, ‘a guardrail should be provided at least 1.5m either side of the ladder.’

To ensure it complies with the standard, KeeGuard® Ladder Kit is a 'retro-fit' guardrail solution that fits to existing fixed ladder or cat ladders, providing 1.5m guardrailing on both sides of the ladder. Quick and easy to install, it simply clamps on to the existing fixed ladder, forming a continual link from the guardrail to the stringer. The kit's unique fitting can clamp around a flat or tubular stringer up to 75mm in width/diameter and does not need to be mechanically fixed to the roofing membrane or building’s structure. MANAGING HERITAGE:

A New Approach Older buildings come with their own particular set of challenges when it comes to environmental and structural management – but now help is at hand using innovative technology. Property Tectonics has been working with Salford University on using BIM (Building Information Modelling) to create a detailed model of Joule House, the former home of scientist James Prescott Joule and a listed building. BIM is well known for its use in the design, planning and management of new-build developments, but its use in

historic buildings is complicated by the complexity of structures, decorative elements, and nonstandard design. Now, through a project funded by the British Council, Property Tectonics is taking BIM in heritage buildings to the next level – offering all the experience and expertise you need to better manage your property. They can help you create a 3D model of your building

which provides information about every component, better informing planning, design and management. It can also help you predict how the building might cope with various future challenges, including environmental and climate changes, and also project how people inside the building would experience those changes. Combining cutting-edge technology with heritage eccentricities is a specialism of

Property Tectonics, a property and construction consultancy that fuses expert staff with intelligent software. They can offer support with all your professional surveying and asset management needs, regardless of the age of your building. 14 FOCUS ON : DOORS, WINDOWS, ROOFLIGHTS & GLAZING : PATIOMASTER

A North-Wales based Architect called in the services of PatioMaster North West recently, when re-modelling his home.

Patiomaster member supplies doors for impressive Llandudno house re-model The project, a modern garden room extension with an atrium roof light, was at the home of Matthew Jones, who owns his own Architects Practice. PatioMaster North West, one of PatioMaster’s nine dealers across the UK and Ireland, fabricated the 4 pane patio doors in slate grey on white sliding doors, while local installer company, A55 Plastics, completed the installation and as homeowner Matthew explains, the results are stunning: “We are really pleased with the finished results, the doors met all our

expectations in terms of fit, finish and quality and the project was completed on time and within budget; one of the reasons we choose PatioMaster North West in the first place.”

doors to achieve a maximum view of the sky, and the grey exterior gives the look of aluminium and the white inside lends a clean, minimal look and complements the property perfectly.”

PatioMaster North West fits doors into any home and style of building; another reason why Matthew choose the company: “Our main aim with the remodel was to let as much light in to the room as possible, and give us optimal views out to the garden with the maximum opening for nice days. We went for 2.4m high floor to window

Installers A55 Plastics have been installing new plastics, windows and conservatories to customers across North Wales for 20 years. Mark Leach explains: “The installation took about half a day, and we were recommended to the homeowner via a mutual friend who we had also done some installation work for.” PatioMaster offers a comprehensive support package to its fabricators, and by working through a small network of local craftsmen, also offers a dedicated and local service for homeowners. Schueco’s revamp of network centre successfully completed Leading building envelope specialist, Schueco UK Ltd, has announced that the refurbishment of the Schueco Network Centre in Milton Keynes is now complete. The revamp – designed to improve the Centre’s facilities even further for architects, main contractors, Schueco network partners and their customers – represents a major capital investment for the company. The windows, as well as 100 doors, were made and installed by Spectus Approved Window Contractor Jade Windows using the Spectus Elite 70 bevelled system with 8.8mm laminated acoustic glass and additional EPDM seal. Spectus challenges aluminium with new PVC-U flush tile & turn

Jewers Doors Speeds Response for Wrexham’s New Emergency Centre

Spectus has issued a direct challenge to aluminium windows in high-rise with the launch of its Flush Tilt & Turn PVCU system, that has a similar look to the metal but with significant benefits including thermal performance and cost. With U-Values as low as 0.8 W/m2K (WER A++) achievable, window openings up to 1,450mm wide X 2,300mm high, and many other unique features, the Spectus Flush Tilt & Turn is ideal for new-build apartments, housing, hotels, health education and public buildings, where aluminium or composites might otherwise have been first choice.

Jewers Doors put the finishing touches to the new £15 million Ambulance and Fire Services Resource Centre (AFSRC) at Wrexham with the installation of 14 pairs of Swift fast-acting, bi-fold doors. Jewers Doors were commissioned to install doors where safety, reliability and speed of operation, were the prime factors. Each door comprises of four panels, with two leaves folding to each side of the exit. Fire and ambulance vehicles need to exit rapidly when under ‘blue light’ emergency response conditions, and the FAAC 560 drive units fitted to the Swift doors ensure they take less than

ROMAG seven seconds automatically fully open. In the event of power failure, each door can be instantly and effortlessly opened manually via low-level disengage handles to prevent delays. A four metre vertical roller door not only typically takes twice as long to open, but drivers find it more difficult to judge when there is sufficient height clearance. In the urgency of responding to an emergency call, there is a risk of tall vehicles such as fire engines hitting the bottom of the door while it’s still opening, which not only requires a costly repair to the door, but also to the vehicles ladders and roof lights. Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is an Art Deco wonder. Built in the 1930’s, its structured clean lines encompass interior detail which echoes the elegance of a bygone era. When it came to a £14.5 million refurbishment, it was vital to fuse functionality with sensitivity within the Grade II* listed building. Improved accessibility needed to be incorporated and the remotely located control box was concealed within the Art Deco fittings. The solution was found in GEZE UK’s TSA 160 UFO automatic under floor operator for swing doors. The TSA 160 UFO not only powers the heavy doors with ease but has the added bonus of being virtually silent in operation – making them ideal for a building renowned for its acoustic properties. The windows that match the Ultra range come in a choice of a grey or white aluminium exterior, with an oak veneer finish to the interior that has three coats of clear polyurethane which allows the beauty of the wood grain to show, adding a warm feel to the room. The Supreme range of windows is constructed from thermally broken aluminium frames set in a double glazed unit and comes in a choice of contemporary grey or stunning white aluminium powder coating. They are

completed with a powder coated thermally broken aluminium cill and finished by a brushed graphite handle as standard. The external aluminium surfaces on both ranges are guaranteed against defects for 15 years. Made from a robust high quality polyester, they come in four colours, white, cream, beige and black with a choice of coloured trim to match the colour of the doors.” To find out more about Vufold’s comprehensive range of bifold doors, windows and accessories visit www.vufold.co.uk Enquiry No.225 www.mclink.co.uk/912-225

Homeowners embark on renovation spree to modernise and increase ‘Family Time’

Nearly half (47%) of the UK’s homeowners taking part in a survey by leading window manufacturer VELUX® are planning to carry out home improvements over the next six months. For the majority of home improvers (59%), the main reason for renovating is to either update their interior décor or modernise their homes. However, one out of every 10 (10%) ‘home improvers’ is embarking on a project to create or improve space that they can spend more time together in as a family. For this particular group of ‘family time’ seekers, they are willing to spend big to make their dream a reality, with a planned average spend of £15,589. This is more

than double the planned average spend of £6,444 for all home improvers.

• Three in 10 home improvers in London (30%) are planning either an extension or conservatory.

The home improvement survey supports the launch of a new campaign from VELUX to inspire and support homeowners with practical tips, advice and tools, to help them plan for and create their dream single-storey extension with VELUX roof windows.

Architectural designer and television presenter Charlie Luxton has given the campaign his backing by sharing his own bright ideas and extension tips online at www.velux.co.uk/extensions

Other key survey findings include: • Almost three quarters (72%) of home improvers are planning to begin their work over the next three months (July, August and September). • Almost half (47%) of home improvers are planning work on their kitchen, with slightly less (42%) planning work on their living space.

Charlie Luxton said: “More and more UK homeowners are choosing to make home improvements instead of moving to bigger and better spaces. This desire to extend and renovate rather than buy and sell is influenced by many factors such as cost and increased ability to personalise existing living space. BDP Architects install Mapei’s Mapecomfort Floor AR/X System at Bristol office BDP a major, international practice of architects have recently refurbished the floors within their Bristol office with Mapei’s Mapecomfort Floor System. Originally established in 1961 as Building Design Partnership, BDP now have offices around the world combining local knowledge with vision, value and infrastructure of an award winning practice. The floors in the meeting, library and toilet areas have recently been refurbished using Mapecomfort Floor System AR/X in grey – the first completed project worldwide using the new system. The project was undertaken by Coatech Ltd. who specialise in all types of resin flooring nationwide. Initially the carpet tiles and multiple layers of vinyl tiles were removed exposing the sub base. A cove was installed to all toilet walls ensuring the floor area is easy to clean and maintain. Mapecomfort was then laid to the floor which was later sealed with Mapefloor Pore Filler. Once this had cured, Coatech

applied a coat of Mapei Mapefloor PU 460, a 2-3mm flexible, self-smoothing polyurethane. To finish, two coats of Mapei Mapefloor Finish 58 W, a matt finish polyurethane coating was applied. Due to its elastic properties the Mapei Comfort Floor System proves advantageous when a good level of comfort is required underfoot. This is provided from the matting at the base of the system which also has excellent soundproofing capabilities, reducing the impact of noise transmission into areas below. The flooring system also has a high resistance to wear and abrasion from constant foot traffic and moveable office furniture such as castor chairs. 26 FLOORS, WALLS & CEILINGS Heronrib adds style and safety to the Visionary

Heronrib matting, manufactured in the UK and US by Plastex, has recently been laid in several areas of a new stylish development in Hong Kong called “The Visionary”, including changing rooms, indoor and outdoor pools and shower areas. As all these areas are characterised by the presence of water, the challenge was to find an attractive solution that was hygienic whilst offering slip resistance, drainage and barefoot comfort. They also needed to give special attention not to damage the existing decking on the rooftop and marble flooring for the interiors. Sunwall International, Plastex’s distributor in Hong Kong, supplied the developer Nam Fung Group with 16 rolls of Heronrib to provide the required solution. Flowcrete Poland’s Biggest Project at the Country’s Tallest Office Building

Bostik launches new carpet adhesive with added grab Bostik has introduced a new formulation for its Laybond Carpet adhesive to provide extra grab, helping to combat carpet curl on larger projects. Available in a 5kg or 15kg tub, the water-based, solvent-free acrylic emulsion adhesive ensures a fast and permanent bond, helping installers to deliver a high standard of work on time and in budget. Providing up to 45m² of coverage per 15kg, the low VOC carpet adhesive can be applied to concrete, cementitious screeds, chipboard, hardboard, plywood and smoothing compounds. It can also be used to bond textile floor coverings over most underlays. Suitable for use over normal under floor heating installations, the new adhesive can also bond rigid and semi-flexible vinyl tiles and selected sheet vinyl.

Last month, the Warsaw Spire became the tallest office building in Poland! Flowcrete took part in the impressive project, providing over 70,000m2 of seamless resin coatings for the building’s underground car park. Warsaw Spire is a complex consisting of three buildings: a 220-metre high-rise and two other office buildings, each 55 metres high. The development is within an area called the European Square, where visitors can also find trees, fountains, cafes and even an art gallery. The investor and developer of the project, Ghelamco Poland, designed the complex to provide office space for approximately 8,000 people. A five storey underground car park was constructed beneath the lot, with parking space for over 1,200 cars and separate facilities for two-wheeled vehicles. FLOWCRETE

Hunter Douglas delivers aluminium panel ceiling for the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague

REMMERS

Hunter Douglas played its part in the creation of the new €204 million International Criminal Court (ICC), providing 29,000m2 of ceiling panels. The 56,000m2 complex, designed by architect Bjarne Hammer, of Denmark’s renowned agency Schmidt, Hammer, Lassen Architects, had to express the essence of democratic architecture – something that the Hunter Douglas ceiling clearly demonstrates. “The ceiling connects spaces and creates a sense of sameness throughout the building,” explains Hammer, “because the same ceiling is suspended everywhere: where the suspects’ reside, where the lawyers work and in the office spaces.” Hunter Douglas was commissioned to manufacture slim aluminium ceiling panels, perforated and inlaid with acoustic mats. These were selected for practical reasons because it enables fire safety and air quality installations to be tucked away neatly.

KITCHENS, BATHROOMS & WASHROOMS 29 be hygienic, tough, durable, practical, easy to clean and have superb safety credentials. Plus of course it needs to be suitable for use in a very old building — our kitchen dates back to 970 AD. “In addition, we are very proud of our Five Star food and hygiene rating from the Environmental Health Agency, so we are passionate about maintaining our excellent standards. Using the right products in our kitchen to help us achieve that is paramount.

Altro stands the test of time in historic school The proven combination of Altro WhiterockTM hygienic wall cladding and Altro Stronghold 30TM safety flooring has been so successful in the kitchen at one of the world’s oldest schools, that after 15 years of service it’s been chosen again for a total refurbishment. The King's School in Ely, Cambridgeshire, is a co-educational independent day and boarding school. It was founded in 970 AD. Fifteen years ago, the school’s ‘monastic barn’ kitchen was fitted with Altro Whiterock White and Altro Stronghold 30 to provide a high level of safety, hygiene and aesthetics. More recently, in 2014, Altro Whiterock was installed around the lift shaft of a dumb waiter in the kitchen. The school has been so happy with the long term performance of Altro Whiterock and Altro Stronghold 30

together that there was no hesitation in selecting the integrated system of compatible hygienic wall cladding and safety flooring again when the entire kitchen recently underwent a refit. As the system is fully integrated, it fits together perfectly to provide a hygienic, watertight solution for commercial kitchens.

Shirley Jolly, the school’s catering manager, says: “This is a busy commercial kitchen, which produces 1,600 meals per day with three sittings, so the flooring and wall cladding has to

“Fifteen years ago we had Altro Whiterock installed three quarters of the way up the kitchen walls, and we have been delighted with it over that time. It’s hygienic and has been very easy to maintain, just needing a regular wipe down. It’s proven to be ideal for our busy commercial kitchen. For us it’s a tried and tested product. “So we definitely wanted to use it again for the refurbishment, but this time we wanted it floor to ceiling — giving total encapsulation. This meant that we could cover all the hard-to reach places around the doors and windows - and there are some tricky areas as this is a very old structure - to make cleaning as easy as possible and further improve hygiene.” Altro’s integrated floor and hygienic wall cladding system offers the best possible protection against bacteria, bugs and vermin. It makes cleaning easier too. Designed to address the issues commonly found in kitchens – slips, contamination, cleaning and maintenance, the Altro system doesn’t just protect the people who use it; it also protects the environment and those responsible for the health and safety of employees and visitors.

Atmos

The Altro wall cladding and flooring for the refurbishment were installed by Altro Whiterock Premier Installer Elite Interiors. Contracts co-ordinator Dave Barnard, says: “This school kitchen is the perfect example of how Altro Whiterock and Altro Stronghold 30 work together to create a long-lasting, safe and hygienic environment in commercial applications. “These products have really stood the test of time here at the King’s School, which is partly due to their quality, but also testament to the school’s excellent maintenance regime. After consulting with both Altro and the client, we all agreed that for the refurbishment these products were still the best choice.” Altro Whiterock White is the hygienic alternative to tiles that’s impact resistant, grout-free and easy to clean. Its smooth white surface and classical purity make it a timeless choice for any interior. The product is Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) approved and is made from a highquality, food-safe PVCu polymer that can handle temperatures up to 60°C. It meets all current European Union (EU) Directives on health and hygiene. This makes it particularly suitable for use in commercial kitchens especially combined with Altro Stronghold 30. Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring achieves Altro’s highest rating for slip resistance, and is designed to minimise risk in wet and greasy conditions for the lifetime of the flooring. As well as helping to keep staff safe from slips, it also helps reduce their fatigue, thanks to its 3mm thickness which provides noise reduction and comfort underfoot.

When a 700+ bed hospital in the North West of the England wanted to assess the efficiency of their current pump set-up, they contacted Grundfos Pumps. The recommendation was that Grundfos would undertake an Energy Check to establish their current pump set-up and look at the associated energy usage. One of the benefits of undertaking an exercise like this with a pump specialist such as Grundfos is that after the check, a detailed report is produced. This report demonstrates what kWh, CO2 and financial benefits, can be achieved, by improving the system efficiency through upgrading to newer or improved pump solutions. Innovative new Flam fire launched in the UK

decorative options means each fire can be designed specifically for the end user. Added to that, these fires have unbeatable output making them energy and cost efficient.”

An innovative new gas fire, which takes away the need for multiple flues and chimneys, has been launched in the UK.

Paul continued: “At Smart Fire UK we specialize in creating heating solutions for commercial and residential settings and working with designers and specifiers to create workable solutions for them and their customers. Whether in a new build apartment development, a renovated hotel or a family home, this new product gives customers flexibility, efficiency and a stylish finish perfect for 21st century living.”

Flam is the latest manufacturer to be added to the range at leading heating solutions provider Smart Fire UK, the sole UK distributor. The unique gas and flue design system allows up to 12 fires to operate off one flue over 12 storeys, making them an ideal choice for new build apartments and hotels looking to create a focal point in a room. The flexibility of the system means the fires do not have to be positioned in the identical spot on each floor. Instead they can be located to suit the developer or end user with the clever system allowing for multiple configurations which a traditional system would be unable to

accommodate. Using the latest technology, the fires can be operated via a smart phone, tablet or remote control meaning users can control the height and width of the flame. Once the flue system is in place, each fire can be designed individually to compliment the interior scheme. Users can chose different decorative touches inside the fire, with the choice of stones, pebbles, logs, firewood or black diamond, wall coverings and glass to make the fire unique to them. An inline fan controls the gas flow and the air input allowing for a safe and highly energy efficient fire.

If the flue was to become obstructed, the individual fires will automatically shut down safely and will reboot once the obstruction has been remedied.

Paul Holt, business manager at Smart Fire UK said: “This is the next generation of fire and heating system. “The clever configuration means a new build developer or hotel can run multiple fires over multiple floors without having the time and expense of adding extra flues and chimneys. “It allows them to develop a focal point in a room, where previously that may not have been possible, and the

There are also planning restrictions on what can be fitted to the front of the restaurant, so we had to find a solution that could be fitted in the small space at the rear”. “The arches are listed and owned by Network Rail and there were restrictions on the type of solution that we could install”, said David Short, Director of ADS Air Con. “That’s why the two-pipe solution from Mitsubishi Electric has worked so well”.

The arches are metal-clad to prevent water from the brickwork entering the building, so it was not possible to fix the internal air conditioning to this. The first floor VIP area in particular proved a real challenge due to the curvature of the building. Options were proposed for low wall and cassette units however a ducted fan coil mounted on the roof of a storage room was finally selected as it offered easy installation and better air movement for the occupants.

A single City Multi outdoor unit has been installed in an empty space to the rear of the building and this can send simultaneous heating and cooling to the indoor units installed throughout the restaurant to maximise the efficiency of the whole system.

The control strategy for the system also had to be user-friendly and costeffective. Based on those requirements, PAR-31 hard-wired controllers were used for the three control zones. What makes the SALUS Smart Home system different to any other is the way in which products can interact with each other. This is achieved by simply setting up ‘One Touch’ rules that are personalised to the user and that communicate with the products via the universal gateway. As such, the permutations for controlling devices within the home are endless. At any time, users can press the ‘scan my home’ icon and quickly obtain an overview on every SALUS Smart Home product in their property. This is ideal for those occasions when the property is unoccupied. Also, if the user has the system installed in multiple properties, they can quickly view what is happening in each property by side swiping on the property picture. The Colour Revolution: Here to stay Are you joining the colour revolution? The days when PVC building products were only available in white are rapidly disappearing. Colour specialist Freefoam Building Products has always been at the forefront of promoting choice to the homeowner and championing change in options for roofline and cladding products and are now seeing this major trend towards colour continue with an increase in the sales demand for grey products.

In our opinion, Freefoam have got it right. Their Colormax range is excellent, the quality of the colours, their performance, and the attention to detail of board sizes, trims and fixings, offers House-Builders the best all-round package of coloured PVC. One of our first developments was an Apartment Block in Reading in 2007, and 9 years on the colour is as fresh as when the product was installed, with no sign of fading. We see the opportunity for colour growing even more, and are sure that Freefoam will be at the vanguard of this developing market, building on their strengths and reputation”.

Freefoam statistics confirm this growing momentum across its roofline range for grey products. With combined sales of Storm Grey, Anthracite Grey and Dark Grey fascia up an amazing 77% year on year, window trims up over 100% and Freefoam’s Plastops pin and nail fixing range up 53% the grey revolution is on its way and here to stay. The shift in demand can be traced back over recent years as the economy began its journey out of recession and housebuilders started to look to differentiate their offering with kerbside appeal by providing home buyers with choice of colours for window frames and doors. Using colour is a quick and cost effective design feature that brings a contemporary feel to exterior façades of both new home and apartment developments. It’s a trend that has steadily grown all around the UK and is now used by many major housebuilders. Freefoam stockist Willmotts of Reading has many years of experience working with national housebuilders, George Petts commented “Willmotts have seen sales of coloured Roofline & Cladding products increase dramatically, particularly over the last 3 years, as the visual presentation of new houses becomes even more important. Style matters, and coloured roofline is now seen as the first statement of this style development witnessed by prospective purchasers.

As with many trends within the building industry changes and new developments within the new build sector soon filter through to the renovation and refurbishment market. Homeowners still find improving an attractive proposition and a real alternative to moving. A survey by respected financial website This Is MONEY.co.uk reports that adding a home extension, kitchen extension or loft conversion to a home can increase the value of a property by between 5 and 15%. as well as creating the extra space needed for changing circumstances, all without having to go through the hassle of a move. 38 ROOFING,CLADDING & INSULATION Insulation gives new lease of life in wales

Social housing provider, RCT Homes, has accessed Phase 2 Arbed funding to carry out a range of improvements on 30 Cornish Units in Cwmbach, Wales, including the installation of ROCKWOOL stone wool insulation to alleviate fuel poverty issues and improve living conditions for tenants. In the past, efforts to improve the insulation of Cornish Unit homes have foundered on the difficulties presented by the Mansard Roof design. Achieving a good fit within the timber frame using externally applied options has proved challenging. When insulation has been applied from inside this type of home, the approach taken has proved too intrusive and disruptive to the building fabric and tenants in occupancy. Kemperol Membranes put piccadilly Gate’s roofs back on track

Enquiry No.436 www.mclink.co.uk/912-436

Lighting Up Leisure

Three roofs of one of Manchester’s most iconic office buildings have been refurbished with an overlay of Kemperol liquid membranes from Kemper System. The ‘Piccadilly Gate’ building adjacent to Manchester Piccadilly Station was refurbished in a BREAM ‘Excellent’ scheme in 2010. Issues with the integrity of the single ply roof had continually plagued the building with leaks, resulting in unsightly staining to the suspended ceilings within. Consequently, the decision was taken to overlay the existing roofing membranes on levels 10, 4 and 3 with a cold-applied liquid system from Kemper System. Castle Roofing, was appointed to carry out the works and selected Kemper System’s solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR as the most appropriate solution for the level 10 roof. KEMPER SYSTEM It includes Kalwall cladding for all the walls in the new fitness suite and exercise studio. The choice of Kalwall mirrors specification of the same cladding several years ago for the adjacent Oasis Academy where the system is used for both roof and wall applications. This brings a sense of uniformity and symmetry across both sites. One of the main attractions of specifying high performance Kalwall is its unique effect on both the interior and exterior. Internally, rooms are bathed with diffused natural daylight which creates a stimulating and healthy exercising environment. While being translucent, it also offers privacy. Externally, the elevations appear crisp, simple and inviting. When illuminated at night Kalwall will glow softly presenting a striking external appearance.

This new swimming pool at Immingham includes some of the best examples of how the Kalwall® translucent daylighting system is used for leisure and sport activities. The £1.45 million transformation and creation of this stunning facility was designed by ENGIE - Architectural Consultancy for North East Lincolnshire Council with support from Sport England.

The company has had all three of its ISO certifications successfully renewed for three years: OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification and ISO 9001 Quality Management certification.

Unlike conventional glazing, highly insulating Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. In addition, the even distribution and deep penetration of light through Kalwall means less artificial lighting is needed thereby reducing energy costs. MAGGIE’S CANCER CENTRE ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND, UNITED KINGDOM BUILDING PRODUCTS

RAISING THE ROOFLINE Unusually shaped, the architecturally stunning Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen in Scotland is designed to assist in the psychological and emotional healing process for those affected by cancer. A Licensed Icynene contractor installed both Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and Icynene H2 Foam LiteTM in the pebble-shaped structure. Situated on the southern boundary of the Foresterhill site of the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen, Scotland, Maggie’s Cancer Centre is the latest such centre to provide emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer.

The centre, designed to be homely and full of warmth, aims to provide an environment where those facing cancer can gain support. The centre also intends to inspire imagination from visitors and has contributed to the architecture of the Aberdeen city area. The Design: Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, together with Scottish firm, Halliday Fraser Munro, took on the challenge to create a visually stunning structure in the shape of a pebble. The unusually-shaped single storey structure features a reinforced concrete exterior and timber interior. Steel reinforcements were used to form the structure’s unique shape. With activity and meeting rooms located on the ground floor and office space on the mezzanine, the centre features high-end interior finishes and manages to create a peaceful, welcoming and beautiful space for anyone who visits. Insulating Maggie’s Cancer Centre: A Licensed local Icynene contractor was enlisted by Halliday Fraser Munro to help insulate the centre in February 2013 using two high performance Icynene spray foam insulation products. The spray foam insulation crew used five sets of the 100% water-blown closed cell medium density Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and used seven sets of the open

cell Icynene H2Foam LiteTM throughout the curved structure. Spray foam crews applied the medium- density material on the lower part of the structure to a height of 2.5m in an effort to provide additional structural strength. Being 100% water blown, Icynene H2Foam ForteTM has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 1 - the lowest GWP available. In additional to providing structural strength, the closed cell product also can reject bulk water penetrating through the building envelope. Above the 2.5m mark and across the curved roofline Icynene H2Foam LiteTM was applied. Due to the unique curvature of the roofline, crews had to aid the rise of the foam by hand to ensure consistent and even coverage. As a result of using spray foam insulation throughout the design, an extremely high R-value was achieved. With a high R-value, staff and visitors to Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen will be able to work and heal in comfort all year round regardless of the season.

Both Icynene H2Foam LiteTM and Icynene H2Foam ForteTM contribute to creating a positive, peaceful and comfortable environment for visitors to the new centre in Aberdeen. The Result: Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen was completed and opened in September 2013. The structure, set apart by a small landscaped area, is open to anyone requiring its services and support. The unusual shape and highly visual design has been receiving attention from the architecture community and the greater Aberdeen community. In November 2013, the centre was awarded a Commendation by Aberdeen’s Civic Society and in March 2014, GMS Insulations Ltd, the Icynene distributor in the UK, was awarded the Best Architectural Project – International at the Icynene 2014 Global Conference for their involvement in the project.

Wood has long been a popular material for furniture due to its durability, versatility and striking natural appearance. However, whether it’s 10 or 100 years old, every day wear and tear can take its toll on wood, deteriorating the furniture’s quality and look. Unknown to many, one of the most effective and common methods of restoring wooden furniture is simply reviving the surface. Worn wood can be sanded, cleaned and re-finished to present a fresh canvas with an as-new appearance. For furniture pieces that have a build-up of wax, unsightly finger prints or white rings, an abrasion technique may be required. Many good furniture finishes are designed to be thick to prevent any impermeable damage from penetrating the wood. OSMO
