10 DOORS, WINDOWS, ROOFLIGHTS & GLAZING Internal screens reinforce contemporary aesthetic

Traditional steel window and door screens are being ‘reinvented’ by members of the Steel Window Association to meet the huge demand for bespoke internal glazed partitions. They are screening everything from boardrooms and wine cellars to kitchens and showers in high-end commercial and residential projects. Bridging the contemporary and traditional aesthetic in a way that is otherwise unachievable, steel screens allow excellent visibility and the passage of maximum light between different areas. Steel provides solidity without being visually overpowering; a look no other material can replicate due to the slenderness and robustness of the steel sections. SWA

Creating the ideal indoor climate – for offices, schools, hospitals or gyms – can be a difficult task. One person’s ideal temperature may be uncomfortably chilly for another. So, wouldn’t it be better to consider a natural alternative or addition to air conditioning? GEZE UK has the ideal solution with the introduction of natural ventilation systems that offer adjustable climate control, driven by ‘intelligent thinking’ window technology. There are four modular systems, which range from simple open/close window control, to wireless climate ventilation, integrated ventilation and indoor climate building control, designed to work in isolation or with other climate control systems, such as air conditioning. The simple open/close mechanism enables several single or grouped windows to be controlled by a single switch or building management system. GEZE UK Enquiry No.403

BES 6001: 3.1 Certification Awarded The impact of our purchasing decisions has never been more critical. Our global economy is now bringing to bear the Butterfly effect: when a butterfly flaps it’s wings in one part of the world it can cause a hurricane in another part of the world.  Construction by its nature of increasing or improving density is intensely energy demanding, the embodied energy contained in our building stock has derived from the earth’s resources, therefore, as construction professionals we should all carefully consider the ethics of our purchasing decisions.  Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, as a British privately owned organisation has always held its integrity in business as the cornerstone of its operations.  As part of The Parkside Group Limited, Comar has built up excellent, long term relationships with its suppliers, ensuring they are paid on time and if issues arose building partnerships which quickly lead

Cambridge Blue Richard Murphy Architects have created a new campus for Anglia Ruskin University, announced by a dramatic curved façade clad in tiered layers of Nordic Blue Living 3 pre-patinated copper from Aurubis.

The phased development on the edge of a Cambridge conservation area sought not only to create additional education floor space but also to repair and reinstate a small piece of Cambridge’s historic urban fabric. The 2nd phase building has been given a unique façade of copper cladding and a dramatic stepped roof profile, both to identify the lecture theatre volume within but also to signify the campus entrance at one end, whilst stepping down to the scale of neighbouring, Victorian terraced housing at the other.

The three buildings comprising the new campus (built by principal Design and Build contractors R G Carter Cambridge Ltd.) share the same external facing brickwork, structured by dark metal detailing. In contrast, vertical standingseam cladding in pre-patinated copper from Aurubis accentuates the curved facades of the lecture theatre. Richard Murphy Architects’ Director James Mason commented: “Copper cladding

is an extremely durable material that supports the longevity inherent in the brickwork façades. It also brings a sense of dignity which the University wish to engender in their buildings to reflect their own values as a high quality Higher Education establishment. “The Nordic Blue Living 3 variant effectively gave the closest visual match to a natural patinated copper in our opinion – without the 25-year wait for the weather to do the job for us.” Nordic Blue is a factory-applied patina developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. In marine climates, the natural copper patina contains some copper chloride giving it a blue-green colour and this is emulated with Nordic Blue using 100 % brochantite. Another range, Nordic Green, is produced with a hint of iron sulphate yellow, replicating greener natural patinas. With both ranges, the process can be

accurately controlled so that, as well as the solid patina colours, other intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material. These products are easily bent and formed, and there are no limitations on the length of copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size panels. Other Aurubis Architectural copper surfaces include Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’, as well as Nordic Brown preoxidised copper giving either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment. Copper alloys are also available for architectural applications, such as Nordic Bronze, Nordic Brass – which is now also available preweathered – and the innovative Nordic Royal, an alloy with a long-lasting golden colour. KEMPER SYSTEM Provides solution for Chester Zoo’s Monsoon Forest Waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, has provided the roofing solution for a hot and humid environment in the heart of leafy Cheshire at Chester Zoo’s £40m ‘Islands’ development.

The walkway with its shaped surfaces and the high temperatures proved challenging whilst working on the project. K. Pendlebury Roofing taped the seams of the 200m2 plywood surface to prevent any resin from seeping through the joints during the application process. Following application of a primer mixed with quartz sand to provide a key, the cold-liquid Kemperol 2K-PUR resin was then applied directly onto the roof. The installation team then laid Kemper System’s 165gsm flexible reinforcement fleece, which is cut to size and shape on site, directly into the wet resin, using rollers to remove any creases or air bubbles before immediately applying more resin to fully saturate the fleece. The system was applied in a single wet-on-wet process and allowed to cure, providing a seamless, monolithic membrane that bonds directly to the substrate, which is permanently elastic and cannot delaminate.

The company’s solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR cold liquid-applied waterproofing membrane has been used for the roof of the ‘Tree House’, which will form a covered walkway for visitors under a giant polymer dome – called Monsoon Forest. Designed by Dan Pearlman, the exhibit forms part of the largest zoo development in UK history, Islands, comprising six South East Asian island environments which visitors can explore on foot or by boat to discover native plants and wildlife from the region. Within Islands is Monsoon Forest which will be home to numerous species including Sulawesi macaques and orangutans, and the tree house – which mimics a field research centre - will enable visitors to walk through the enclosure along a raised walkway. Roofing contractor, K. Pendlebury Roofing, met with the client at the zoo to discuss specification for the job, which had to take into account the habitat’s changing climate, the water mist that is used to create humidity and, the behaviour of the animals.

with their fingers or even urinate on it. “Kemperol 2K-PUR provided a robust, flexible solution that will not crack or soften at high temperatures and will provide excellent resistance to humidity, puncturing and uric acid; and roughly 80% of the resins in the Kemperol 2K-PUR are obtained from the seeds of the tropical castor plant which is a renewable resource.”

Explains Neilan Symondson from K. Pendlebury Roofing: “There is adjacent netting along the side of the tree house roof and the orangutans can move freely within their enclosure, which means that they could throw things onto the roof, pick at the surface

“Kemperol 2K-PUR is an environmentally responsible waterproofing solution that helps us deliver that remit while ensuring a safe and durable environment for both visitors and the orangutans.” Website: Enquiry No.217

Sika Provides Warm Start to the School Year for Loughborough Primary Roofing contractor, Ice Roofing, has completed a complex upgrade ahead of programme at Robert Bakewell Primary School in Loughborough, thanks to the ease of installation of a Sika Liquid Plastics’ roofing system. Building surveyor, Make, specified a full built-up roofing system with Decothane Ultra low odour cold-applied liquid roofing membrane as the final waterproofing layer for the scheme to

address issues with the integrity of the existing waterproofing and raise the building’s thermal performance to current building regulations standards. The project was designed to improve the school environment, leveraging funding from the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF), an initiative that academies and sixth form colleges can apply for each year. Sika Liquid Plastics and MAKE worked closely with the school to compile and upload the

paperwork required to access the funds. The 2,000m2 split-level roof had an existing mineral felt roof which had reached the end of its service life and started to leak. Further water ingress issues had been caused by the failure of existing outlet detailing. Following a technical specification from Sika after a full site audit, Ice Roofing began the scheme by jet washing the existing surface before beginning installation. The new warm roof system was installed as an overlay and the existing 30mm insulation on the raised area of the roof was left in situ, with a further 100mm of Decotherm PIR insulation board adhered to the surface using Sika’s Decostik adhesive. On the lower areas of the roof where there was no existing insulation, Ice Roofing installed 120mm of Decotherm PIR insulation board, adhering it to the roof with Decostik. Sika’s S-VAP 7000 self-adhesive vapour control and carrier membrane was then applied to the roof

prior to installation of the Decothane Ultra low odour waterproofing membrane. Gareth Davies from Ice Roofing explains: “Installation of the Decotherm PIR board created a robust and even surface for the installation of the coldapplied liquid membrane. As the project began during term time, use of the low odour membrane was ideal as it meant that there were no nuisance odours for staff and pupils and it was quick and easy to install too.” Ice Roofing applied the Decothane Ultra system. A two coat, low odour liquid applied membrane, incorporating a fibre matting to the whole area to create a seamless waterproofing solution. Ice Roofing worked closely with Sika Liquid Plastics throughout the installation, with the manufacturer’s technical team visiting the site on a weekly basis as part of its strict quality assurance process. Expert advice on product choice and suitability, interpretation of designs to give creative and practical options, quick and accurate schedules and support from ‘New Build’ specialists throughout the process.

Getting a kick out of Kalwall® Kalwall translucent cladding is a key feature in the recently renovated British National Taekwondo Centre in Manchester. The new facility was opened in time to service the needs of British athletes training for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Now for the first time, the entire national taekwondo programme, including 130 athletes, coaches and administrators, can be carried out under the same roof. This state of the art facility was designed by AEW Architects, with Balfour Beatty as the main contractor. One of the main attractions of specifying high performance Kalwall is its unique influence on both the interior and its external appearance, particularly at night. Internally, rooms are flooded with diffused natural daylight which creates a stimulating and healthy exercising environment which, although translucent, also offers privacy. Unlike conventional glazing, highly insulating Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. In addition, the even distribution and deep penetration of light through Kalwall means less artificial lighting

is needed thereby reducing energy costs. Kalwall is a popular choice for sports and leisure environments and is commonly installed around swimming pools and sports halls. It is an ideal solution where an even distribution of light is important so that players can distinguish markings on the floor as well as not being distracted by glare and other interference.

Yeoman Rainguard GRP Downpipes Weather the Elements at Scarborough’s New RNLI Lifeboat Station

A new building was required to house Scarborough RNLI’s (Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s) new arrival – a Shannon class all-weather lifeboat, which is larger than Scarborough’s outgoing Mersey class lifeboat. The charity’s new purpose built lifeboat house at Scarborough not only boasts a modern and practical interior with upgraded volunteer crew facilities, an up to date drying room along with a modernised shop and exhibition facilities for visitors, but also a robust, low maintenance, weather resistant exterior.

Image Credit: Dave Barry R.N.L.I. Opening in 1877, the new York Station took three years to rebuild. Designed by the North Eastern Railway’s architect Thomas Prosser, the curved 800ft-long train-shed roof, supported by iron columns, arched 42ft above the platforms. The station was immediately hailed as one of the great buildings in Victorian era. At the time, it was the largest railway station in the world with four massive arches and thirteen platforms.

Platform drainage at Historic York Railway Station

The original York Railway Station was built within the City Walls, adjacent to where the current station now stands. Opened in 1839 by the North Midland Railway, the structure only served trains to and from the south and the northern coalfields. However by 1873, as more passenger and goods lines were built into York, a larger station, from which trains could gain access from all directions, was needed.

Today, the structure still impresses. Serving the busy East Coast mainline route, primarily between Glasgow Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London it is also a vital cross-route link between Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool. The station currently copes with around 800 trains and thousands of passengers each week. With so many passengers using the station, the extended platforms, which project out from the original arched structure, are as busy as ever. The platform surfaces have been designed to gently slope inward away from the track so any surface water naturally drains towards their centre. Effective drainage of these roofed and un-roofed “outer” areas was a major safety consideration.

Hauraton RECYFIX® STANDARD 100 channels were chosen for the slightly curving platforms – see photographs. The 271 metres of channelling installed were made from the company’s tough recycled Polyethylene-Polypropylene (PE-PP), all fitted with Class C 250 ductile iron “heel-safe” gratings finished in a Black anti-oxidisation coating. As each one metre unit only weighs just over 6kg, including the grating, contractor C. Spencer Limited was impressed with the ease and speed of installing the channels as all the units used easily complied with manual lifting regulations. Web: Enquiry No.223

Champions of workplace branding Workplace branding was a key consideration for Boss Design when approached to supply a range of furniture, seating, and meeting solutions for the refurbishment of the six-floor offices of Arthur J Gallagher in Lombard Street, London. The challenge facing Arthur J Gallagher’s in-house design team was to create a distinctive branded interior to represent two non-AJG brands, Alesco and Pen Underwriting; both based at the Lombard Street address. Given its expertise in office furniture solutions, and having already been specified throughout other AJG locations in the UK, Boss Design was the obvious choice to fit-out the building with furniture and seating, and to complement the branding themes. Across four floors of the building that are home to the non-AJG brands, a fusion of colour, materials and furniture was introduced to reflect the individual schemes - purple for Pen Underwriting and orange for Alesco. To harmonise with these themes, Boss Design introduced pieces such as Kruze low-back lounge chairs complete with a veneered outer back and bold punches of coloured fabric. These echo the colours used through signage and feature walls. Each separate identity is then carried throughout two other shared floors where once again, Boss Design’s furniture helps create synergy and reinforces a sense of community within the building. Spectral reaches for the sky with East London installation Spectral Lighting has provided an entire office fit-out using IRIS LED pendant luminaires to a Sky UK office located in East London. Spectral’s IRIS LED luminaires provided a high quality and energy efficient solution, creating a lit environment that staff found comfortable to work in. The Sky UK office located in east London was formerly a textile workshop and had been stripped back to concrete shell, with office space created on the fourth and fifth floors. To retain the industrial aesthetic and character, the architect opted to have the services on show, including the lighting. This meant that the aesthetics of the light fitting were very important, as it would be in full view. Spectral’s IRIS LED luminaire has a visually stunning design, with an ultra-transparent diffuser and suspended on near-invisible threeway split power cables. The unobtrusive circular construction draws the eye through the space, enhancing exposed ceilings and the geometry of any backdrop, without taking centre stage. “The Sky UK project is a fantastic example of a modern lighting system in an office,” says Rob Marsh of Johnathan Hart Associates. “We specified Spectral’s IRIS LED luminaire because it combined the beautiful aesthetics we needed with a high quality of light at a very reasonable price point.” SPECTRAL LIGHTING Enquiry No.412

Pendock bends it with LST Radiator Guards Pendock has been involved with important upgrades within the Whipps Cross University Hospital in Waltham Forest, London, which is affiliated with the prestigious and world-famous Barts Health NHS Trust. The project management team, WT Partnership, employed DAVCO Construction Co Ltd. to install 250 radiator low surface temperature guards, plus some 300 meters of boxing to cover the exposed pipework. This was after Pendock had completed a trial installation on Bracken Ward and carried out a detailed measurement survey of other areas. Pendock Ultima and Ultima Plus type radiator covers were specified, being that they afford extra safety with their ‘bull-nose’/rounded corners against injury caused by falls or trips or even for patients who may see sharp corners as an opportunity to self-harm. All Pendock guards can be fitted with a welded, ligature resistant mesh, which sits behind the radiator grille, if required. Additionally, the Ultima and Ultima Plus ranges of guards feature an antibacterial coating as standard to protect against and even kill MRSA, Salmonella, E-coli and C-difficile bacteria. While for further hygiene – and to facilitate maintenance work - the drop down panels are easily accessible via key entry. PENDOCK Enquiry No.413

fitted on the ground floor to provide easy access to underfloor ducting services throughout the building. Main Contractor BAM Construction fitted the panels on a suspended concrete slab. Once installed they were in-filled with K-screed followed by a resin finish to create a discreet access solution for routine and emergency servicing. The covers have a minimal show-edge and can be easily raised with lifting keys. They are made to sit flush with the surround, guarding against the risk of slips and trips. HOWE GREEN Enquiry No.239

St. Ives, January 2017. International experts, industry bodies and government ministries worldwide are firmly of the opinion that BIM will be the future standard for project planning, coordination and cost control in construction. Recognising this, premium manufacturer Kaldewei has picked up on this hot topic and is providing planners and architects with comprehensive support in the shape of digital data for the most important BIM software applications. With immediate effect, Kaldewei BIM data is available for download from the website at cts-planners/2d-3d-and-bim-files.

Kaldewei supports architects and planners with BIM data The use of BIM (building information modelling) enables computer-based planning that integrates all those involved in a given construction project across all trades. This reciprocal flow of information ensures better planning security and cost efficiency because the interdependencies between architecture, building engineering and possible process changes can be taken into consideration early on. A digital 3D model is at the heart of BIM. It contains all relevant project and product-specific data, supplemented by additional information such as costs and deadlines, and is used by all parties involved in the given project. Kaldewei is actively promoting this forward-looking technology thus once again underlining its close partnership with planners and architects. The Kaldewei data is available in all standard formats for the most

important BIM software solutions: rfa (Revit) and gsm (ArchiCAD); 3D data will be provided in the following formats: 3ds and max (3ds Max), skp (Sketch’up), vwx (Vectorworks), dxf (Autodesk) and alto (Atlantis). In each case the basic product is modelled with the obligatory visible trims such as waste outlet and overflow, making the data even easier for architects to use in day-to-day planning work. Digitalisation of construction industry constantly on the rise BIM is increasingly gaining ground internationally. Here in the UK, Norway, the USA and the Netherlands, BIM is already widely used and, in some cases, is a prerequisite for public tenders. Experts are convinced that over the next three years this planning method will also gain a foothold in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Against the backdrop of the “Green Building”

concept and growing demand for sustainability, BIM’s integrated approach is becoming ever more important as this method provides relevant information across a building’s entire lifecycle. Kaldewei: the perfect partner for project business Kaldewei is a reliable partner for residential and hotel construction projects with a high standard of design and quality. The premium manufacturer’s products winningly combine exclusive design that loses nothing of its timeless elegance even after years of use, and the superior properties of Kaldewei steel enamel. The Kaldewei brand thus offers builders and investors aesthetic and safe product solutions whose quality is backed by a 30-year warranty.

HIDDEN HOUSINGSOLUTIONS FOR ACCESSIBLE BATHROOMS Clos-o-Mat can give a single source to address prolonged independence, at least in the bathroom….. “When home adaptations are undertaken, the bathroom is the most common room in which they are needed,” explains Clos-o-Mat marketing manager Robin Tuffley. “Creating an appropriate bathroom, that includes, or can easily accommodate, certain accessibility features, from the design & build stage is therefore very relevant.

New research has revealed almost 2million people have unmet accessible housing needs, giving providers an opportunity to adjust their offering to meet demand. The report, by Habinteg and Papworth Trust, is recommending developers to review their products to deliver solutions that enable maintenance of independence in mainstream housing. Enquiry No.249

“Things like level access shower, fittings that can be adjusted vertically or laterally, texture and colour, can all play a part. And under Lifetime Homes criteria, there should be an accessible toilet at entry level, bathrooms should be designed to be accessible, ideally adjacent to the main bedroom, and the structure should be of having a ceiling track hoist retro-fitted.!”

An integrated wetroom solution from Schlüter-Systems Ltd When it comes to long term success, possible time and cost savings and versatile design options for wetrooms, we recommend an integrated single-source system. The beauty of the Schlüter®-WETROOM system is that its products have been designed and manufactured to complement each other and take care of installation issues, resulting in a reliable, water-tight finish which is CE marked and guaranteed to last for years to come. A fundamental consideration is moisture management. Poor moisture management can cause leaks leading to damage in the surrounding structure and the potential for mould growth. Heating under tile and stone coverings in a wetroom or bathroom, can be an extremely beneficial method of ensuring efficient heating, effective moisture management, preventing damp, mould and fungus by drying out any residual moisture, and providing comfort. Under wall heating is a relatively new, innovative heating solution that not only offers a great source of heat but is also a safer alternative to a towel rail or radiator;

particularly for children and the elderly. Under wall heating from Schlüter-Systems is a unique solution that is very easy to install and allows radiated heating underneath the tile, thus keeping the system protected and away from harm. The electrical heating system for under tile and stone coverings, Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-E creates comfortably warm tile and stone coverings and can be used in wetrooms, bathrooms, en-suites and shower-rooms. Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-E, has been updated with Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-TB matting. The patented Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-TB thermal break, in addition to reducing impact sound, enables significantly faster heating of floor coverings. The revolutionary integrated thermal break reduces heat loss into the screed and subfloor, and it also benefits from up to 70% quicker warm-up time on concrete than other electric underfloor heating systems. Kensa unveils an evolutionary new heat pump for 2017 Kensa Heat Pumps, the UKs confirmed leading supplier of ground source heat pumps, has released details of a brand-new ‘Evo’ series, which claims to deliver significantly improved efficiencies. Manufactured in Cornwall, the new Evo ground source heat pump series builds upon Kensa’s eighteen years of experience designing heat pumps specifically for British properties. Simon Lomax, Managing Director comments: “The Kensa Evo represents a significant step forward and is a testimony to the ingenuity of an engineering team which focuses exclusively on ground source heat pumps. The Evo series is more efficient and we have also worked hard to reduce noise levels to industryleading levels. And we have not forgotten that the Evo must be simpleto-install and maintain.” Offering a 15 per cent gain in efficiency in order to minimise running costs and maximise income via the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive, the Kensa Evo is available to pre-order in January 2017 for delivery from Spring in 7kW, 9kW, and 13kW single phase models. The ERP A++ rated Evo delivers heating and hot water to 60°C with efficiencies of SCOPs to 4.2 at 35°C, along with significantly reduced noise outputs, packaged in a contemporary contoured gunmetal and gloss-white finish, punctuated by a custom built control panel unique to the Kensa series.

According to James Standley, Operations Director: “All of the ‘off-the-shelf’ controllers failed to deliver all the functionality demanded by our specification so we have designed a bespoke control unit.” Designed for larger new builds and renovation projects, the Evo will supplement Kensa’s market-leading Shoebox 3kW and 6kW models which are ideally suited for smaller new builds. Lomax continues: “With the Kensa Shoebox Heat Pump, we revolutionised the ground source heat pump market and opened up the potential for the technology to be used in the mass market new build sector. Since then, we have focussed on the Evo development which is the evolution of our Compact series, the original Kensa heat pump launched in 1999. With the Shoebox and our new Evo series, alongside our Twin Compact and Plantroom models, Kensa has a product portfolio that suits every application, and all models are backed-up by our exceptional technical support. “We are proud that BSRIA Market Reports have confirmed Kensa as the leading UK supplier of ground source heat pumps for the past four years, and we are confident that we can build upon this success with the Evo series

to support the Government’s ambitious targets for heat pump deployment.” Performance: Each model in the Kensa Evo series has optimised sized stainless steel heat exchangers, which allows the compressor to respond more efficiently, increasing SCOP performance and delivering60°C domestic hot water. Appearance: The ergonomic steel casing has been designed with a focus on ease of access, whilst providing sturdy yet stylish protection from ageing and wear and tear. Installation: The Evo has been designed to be easy to handle and install. With just one single cross head screw in its unique bevelled front panel, the Evo’s electrical component and wiring terminals are easily accessible with the removal of just one panel. The heat pump has four rear water connections, two for the ground collectors and two for the property’s heating distribution system. The connections consist of four 28mm straight brass fittings designed with tight tolerances, ensuring compatibility with easy to install push fittings.

The external side panels feature a curved cut-out offering the installer an extra level of flexibility to install the Evo according to the demands of the site, with vertical and horizontal pipework exit points from the sides and top of the unit. Controls: Kensa has developed its own control board which is the brain of the new Evo heat pump. The customer interface is an intuitive touch screen that facilitates commissioning and parameter settings, and provides live status readings supported by LED light indicators. The custom built software also permits the control board to pre-empt system irregularities using warning safety levels, which may previously have resulted in a fault if left unchecked. This pro-active system will ultimately reduce costs and call outs and enable better diagnostics and system resolution, aided by Kensa’s technical support and UK wide installation network.

38 HEATING, PLUMBING & VENTILATION Evaporative cooling from Condair

Condair, formerly JS Humidifiers, has developed a new app that accurately determines how much energy could be saved by using in-duct exhaust air evaporative cooling and a heat recovery system, rather than just traditional compressor driven cooling. Using worldwide weather data from Meteonorm, the myCoolblue app calculates how much energy is needed annually to cool a building. Then, taking into account 10 years of historic weather data from over 300 regions worldwide, the app projects how much cooling each month could be delivered using exhaust air evaporative cooling and how much would still need to be delivered using traditional mechanical cooling. bespoke designs, and encompasses glass or polycarbonate glazing to the roof top of the turret. It can be fitted in both new build and refurbishment schemes. The development means build and operational costs, and potential weak points on the roof, are all reduced, whilst the internal environment below still benefits from natural daylight and natural ventilation- both key requirements for eco-friendly strategies, particularly in schools. Indeed, Gilberts’ new concept has already been fitted at a number of projects including

Liverpool University’s Jordan Building, Athlone Institute of Technology and Sandringham School’s sports hall. “Combining a ventilation terminal with a roof light was something we designed specifically for one client, but appreciate its advantage for the wider market,” observes Gilberts’ Technical Director Roy Jones. “Every building requires natural light and ventilation, and the roof is the most effective location for those ‘openings’. Any penetration through the roof opens it up for potential issues such as air leakage, water and weather ingress. If the number of penetrations can be kept to a minimum, construction, and longer-term maintenance and repair, costs and time are reduced.” Rooflights are accepted as a most effective means of optimising natural light within a building, allowing up to three times more daylight to penetrate compared to same-sized vertical glazing. Roof turrets are also a very effective means of ventilating a building, as warm air rises naturally due to the buoyancy effect. Gilberts’ range of roof turrets deliver air intake and/or extract as required, and can be

manufactured to individual size requirements, from 300mm x 300mm x 300mm upwards and to bespoke designs (a 10m long special has been produced for one client). Customers have the additional reassurance with a tailored size or shape that Gilberts can fully validate the design before manufacture and installation in its inhouse test facility. As standard, the louvres provide 50% free area, and are weather rated up to Class A. They can be tailored further with a range of internal partitions and dampers to enable full and accurate air control. Engineered from aluminium, the terminals can be powder-coated to any BS/RAL colour. Family-owned, Gilberts has a 55 year pedigree in developing and manufacturing innovative air movement solutions. It is unique in its sector in its ability to design, engineer and supply its products with all processes undertaken in-house at its 85,000ft2 head office and manufacturing facility in Blackpool. Mitsubishi Electric Case study: Matthew Homes Home is where the heat is as Ecodan features in new Buckinghamshire development.

technologies and its Ecodan system is one of the most efficient solutions on the market.

energy targets – and is fully scalable and able to work in conjunction with other systems.

When Matthew Homes - an experienced building company based in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire announced that it was constructing a small development of two and three bedroom homes in Hazelmere, Buckinghamshire, it took the decision to offer a renewable technology option to potential home buyers in the form of air source heat pumps from Mitsubishi Electric.

Offering an affordable alternative to traditional heating systems, Ecodan features a modern, inverter-driven heat pump compressor which converts free energy from the air and upgrades it to higher temperatures, providing reliable heating and hot water all year round. The heat pumps only require a small amount of electricity to harvest, upgrade and move the heat to areas that it is needed.

Under control In order to provide the homeowner with additional peace of mind, Mitsubishi Electric’s MELCloud was installed as a simple Wi-Fi adaptor. MELCloud enables the user to control the Ecodan system either locally or remotely via a tablet, smartphone, PC, Mac or other Internet enabled device.

Not only was Ecodan the natural choice as a proven, reliable form of renewable heating, the ability to provide Matthews Homes with an in-built remote maintenance and technical support was a key part of the decision.

Installation company AP Faulkner was handed the job of fitting the heat pumps, having had plenty of previous experience in dealing with renewable technologies.

Growing up Hazelmere started out as a small hamlet in the ancient Desborough Hundred but it has since become a thriving community, boasting a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants and even an 18 hole golf course. The new development consisted of eight two and three bedrooms homes backing onto woodland. Matthew Homes were on the lookout for a hybrid system that would run alongside a gas boiler and quickly identified Mitsubishi Electric’s Ecodan heat pump range as an ideal solution. In with the renew Mitsubishi Electric is well known for its development of pioneering heat pump

Kim Faulkner, Managing Director at the company, comments: “Heat pumps are an efficient and effective way of heating a property and the cost of implementing a heat pump solution in either small scale or larger projects is dropping all the time. We expect to see plenty more of these installations in the short-term future.” As well as the obvious requirement to meet building regulations, Matthew Homes was particularly interested in offering a heating solution that was simple to use and required little maintenance. Being easy to install and maintain, The Ecodan met all of the specified criteria. On top of this, the system is capable of significantly reducing running costs and CO2 emissions - helping to meet renewable

MELCloud is simple to set up and gives the operator complete control of their Ecodan system over a wireless Internet connection. Residents at the new Hazelmere development will then have the ability to view and control their heating and hot water from anywhere in the world, keep an eye on energy consumption and heat energy produced, set up a seven day weekly schedule and run a holiday mode, get temperature history reports, take in a live weather feed from the Ecodan’s location and share or restrict access to the Ecodan system. The added advantage of the MELCloud system is that it automatically includes access to the MELConsole remote maintenance and technical support available from Mitsubishi Electric. This means that in the event of the new homeowners having any issue with their heating and phoning Matthew Homes, the company can get straight on to Mitsubishi Electric’s technical helpline.

Staff here can then interrogate the system remotely and in the vast majority of cases resolve any issues – without the need for a site visit. Ready to go With the Ecodan system in place, both Matthew Homes and Mitsubishi Electric are confident that residents in the new family dwellings will enjoy years of stress-free, efficient heating. Stuart Bell, Renewable Solutions Consultant at Mitsubishi Electric, concludes: “Ecodan has been optimised to operate flawlessly whatever the weather throws at it. The system has proven itself as a viable alternative to traditional heating systems and I have no doubt that its low noise levels and running costs will be warmly welcomed by the new Hazelmere residents.” Enquiry No.256

Fire & Water resistance see Magply picked to play vital role for Bath Rugby The Recreation Ground in Bath is one of the crucibles of English rugby, famous long before the professional era and still a venue other Premiership and European sides frequently find presents a challenge they cannot meet. It is also a location that posed specific physical and technical questions for the materials used in building the new West Stand, which Magply met in full. The new Gem Stand sponsored by brewery Bath Ales, backs onto the River Avon which is prone to periodic flooding, while the project architects, Arena 1865 also had to take several other design criteria into consideration. These included the provision of fire protection to help safeguard the 4,500 spectators the steel framed structure can accommodate, while rigidity, all round durability and ease of installation were all important. Project Architect, Simon Pugh-Jones outlined the long term ambitions for the ground as a resource to serve the people of Bath rather than just the rugby club, as well as the way Magply aligned with the demands of

the most recent building project. He commented: “The Recreation Ground is the spiritual home of Bath Rugby, but the game has grown and the facilities no longer match all the needs. Our long term objective is to redevelop the ground and a year ago we embarked on a planning process to give certainty over the next four years while the bigger plan is considered and this involved building a new ‘temporary’ West Stand. This sits on the massive old base of the stand rebuilt after World

War Two, with spreader plates to carry the steel frame. Unfortunately, however, the Rec is prone to flooding rapidly to a depth of a metre or more and therefore the building has to be resilient. Also safety requirements have been increased over the years and the new West Stand gives us better facilities including more toilets, more bars and better access and egress in an emergency. We looked at a full range of board solutions including high performance gypsum and recycled plastic, but when we got into the science and the costings, it soon became clear the only board which ticked all the boxes was Magply. If

there is a flood we will be able to quickly wash it down and repaint it, while it will continue to offer full fire resistance. We didn’t need specialist installers and although some of those unfamiliar were sceptical to begin with, they soon found it easy to work with in achieving a neat fit, which also included some fire-boarding applications.” Simon summed up saying: “We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved with this project and the product gave us exactly what we wanted. As a club Bath is all about elite performance, constantly pushing forward and Magply fits with that ethos.” Available from distributors nationwide, Magply continues to grow in popularity with consultants and contractors as well as manufacturers of fire doors, bathroom pods, custodial buildings, park homes and other modular buildings. Ultimately, it offers a long maintenance free life and peace of mind for the building specifier in respect of the ever present danger of fire to life and property. Web: Enquiry No.257

Coopers Fire releases new Smokestop Concertina smoke curtain Coopers Fire has added to its range of smoke and fire curtains with the release of the innovative new SmokeStop Concertina smoke curtain barrier system.

The unique features of the SmokeStop Concertina allow it to be used in place of traditional smoke control features, allowing architects, fire engineers and specifiers to create open plan designs which meet all the requirements of a building’s smoke control strategy. Barriers remain invisibly retracted until activated by an alarm or detector

signal, at which time they descend safely to their operational position to control smoke and assist with smoke channelling, ensuring that areas, such as means of escape, remain tenable and free from smoke. Suitable for a range of building applications, the SmokeStop Concertina is a multi-sided smoke curtain that removes the requirement for columns, corner posts, side guides and intrusive ceiling interfaces. This allows it to be used instead of multiple, individual vertical smoke curtains and integrated with ceilings unobtrusively. Available in closed shapes, such as squares and faceted circles, the SmokeStop Concertina “closed” system is manufactured on a bespoke basis for each project. Available in unlimited widths, with a maximum drop of 6m, the SmokeStop Concertina can be also be supplied in open (U, L, arc and dog leg) shapes. The smoke and temperature resistant fabric used in the Concertina is innovatively folded to allow the fabric to stack neatly into the compact steel head box, and fall perfectly when the smoke curtain is deployed. The SmokeStop Concertina also features

Coopers Fire’s patented Total Gravity Fail-Safe (TGFS) system which ensures the barriers deploy by controlled descent upon initiation or during any power or system failure. Like all Coopers Fire smoke and fire curtain products, the SmokeStop Concertina has been rigorously tested. It is CE marked and is third party certified through Warrington Fire’s Certifire scheme and classified as compliant to EN 12101-1, DH60 and BS EN 1363. Enhanced: Fire-resistant and Flue-gas-optimized Monitors for Stringent Fire Protection Requirements Display Technology Ltd presents an updated and expanded range of their POS line monitor range for industry and trade at ISE 2017 Display Technology Ltd, leading UK specialist for TFT flat screens and system solutions for industrial and multimedia applications, introduces enhancements and extensions of the proven POS-Line product industrial monitor family at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE),the international trade fair for audio-visual and electronic integration (February 7-10, 2017) in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In particular, the focus is on the further optimized POS-Line-BLO monitor series, which has optimized fire load and flue gas performance by using improved fire retardant materials. The new G30 protection glass improves heat resistance and the heat-resistant power and network cables are now halogen-free. The integrated thermal fuse separates the monitor from the power supply when the critical temperature is reached. The monitor housing offers protection class IP33. "The fireresistant and flue-gas-optimized monitors have stood the test as information displays in sensitive areas with stringent fire protection requirements such as escape routes, stairways and on the opposite side of elevators in public buildings, hotels and production halls. It was interesting watching the screens subject to the fire but we were all pleased with the results" explained Display Technology Managing Director Richard Murton. Display Technology Ltd will be showing the new POS line BLO monitors at the Distec GmbH stand P132 in hall 10. Low flammability and low fire load for improved fire protection: Since a suitable standard for monitors does not exist, an independent

Enquiry No.259

expert has classified the devices for the fire behaviour of construction products. The basic fire test showed that the monitors fall below the limit values for class B-S1, d0 according to DIN EN 13501-1 in all categories. This is the best grade in the class of flame retardant products. The certificate confirms that the monitors are hardly inflammable, and that there is almost no smoke in the event of a fire, or that there is a dripping of burning material or parts falling off. The monitors are available in sizes from 31.5 to 54.6 inches. Optimized housing, simplified installation and increased range of temperature: The improved version of the successful POS line product family combines up-to-date technology with a modern and appealing design. "The new POS line monitors are the ideal solution for anyone looking for a robust metal housing, reliability in operation and a wide range of controller including PC input, embedded solid state PC or industrial media player, and front options depending on the application," adds Richard Murton. New features include the optimized aluminium housing with lower weight and increased temperature range, simplified mounting for flexible installation without mounting angles and latest PCAP-Touch technology for 10 finger use. Typical application areas of the POS Line V2 series range from various professional applications for industry and trade as digital whiteboard, wayfinding monitors and digital signage at the point-of-sales.

Sika Provides Flexible Solution for Stokesley School

A North Yorkshire school has built its motto ‘Being the Best We Can Be’ into the fabric of its school campus following a roof refurbishment involving two of its buildings, using Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane Ultra 20 year system. The school operates on an existing campus of 1970s construction and both the main teaching block and the art & geography block have been fully refurbished, including an overlay to the existing roof, as part of a phased sevenmonth programme. The refurbishment project addresses condition issues to ensure Stokesley School's buildings continue to

offer a high quality teaching and learning environment, whilst also improving energy efficiency and futureproofing the site.. Staff and pupils were decanted from the main teaching block prior to the start of works on site and the main contractor removed a service hatch and several roof lights prior to the start of the roofing scheme. Sika Liquid Plastics worked closely with Gatesheadbased Northpoint Architects to develop the technical specification for the roofs and carried out a full site audit to assess the condition of the existing roof and recommend the most appropriate solution. The project is funded by the EFA's Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) with Sika and Northpoint working closely with the school to prepare the technical specification and independent professional advice required for the bid.

Based in Maidstone, Kent, BMI The Somerfield Hospital is part of BMI Healthcare, a leading provider of independent healthcare with a nationwide network of hospitals. The hospital is registered for 38 beds in total and features three operating theatres, three minor procedure rooms and a range of specialist clinics. To help improve the hygiene levels and ease of access for such a diverse range of patients, Gradus refurbished the main outpatient’s WC on the ground floor. Products specified included SureProtect Pure wall cladding and Maxima Specialist Bathroom Products, which were supplied and fitted by an experienced team from Gradus Contracts. SureProtect Pure, was specified to ensure the bathroom remained easy to clean and maintain, helping to reduce the need for frequent

replacement and contribute towards a hygienic environment. The smooth surface is impervious to moisture and bacteria making it ideal for applications that must adhere to rigorous hygiene standards, such as hospital environments. Maxima products in Blue, including a Grab Rail and two Adjustable Support Arms, were chosen to contrast with the White SureProtect Pure wall cladding and to help ensure inclusive access to the WC. The Specialist Bathroom Products specified have been designed to meet guidelines in Approved Document M of the Building Regulation 2010. Connie Stocker, Executive Director at BMI The Somerfield Hospital, said: “We chose to specify Gradus because of its years of experience in the contract interior industry, and proven track record in providing safe and secure solutions to the healthcare sector. As we have a large number of people using our facilities everyday, we required a solution that made our WC accessible to everyone visiting, working

The smooth, easy to clean surface is also extremely durable

and resistant to impact damage, which helps to maintain hygiene standards and reduce ongoing repair and maintenance costs. This project demonstrates our commitment to creating safe and accessible buildings without compromising on the aesthetics of the building.”

Nullifire protection for Greece’s National Library and National Opera Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the new Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC) in Athens has created homes for the National Library of Greece and Greek National Opera, which include a 1,400-seat auditorium. With significant steel structures involved, Nullifire SC902 Fast Track, On-Site Intumescent Steel Coating was used extensively to provide passive fire protection. The steel structure required fireproofing and the Nullifire product was applied across the SNFCC by authorised installer, tdchrom, to meet ISO 12944. Key areas needing protection were the main auditorium, an auxiliary hall with a seating capacity of 400, the rooftop Light House and bridge.

Specific applications within the overall scheme included the opera building’s stage pit, lobby balconies, the library Book Castle and reading room, the galvanised steel truss of the access area in the PV canopy, and facade steel columns up to 25m high where the appearance and texture of the top coat was crucial to the architecture. Nullifire SC902 is a low VOC, one coat, high build system, based on patented technology. It provides a fast cure, effective structural fire performance for steelwork with a fire rating of up to 120 minutes. TREMCO ILLBRUCK

Helifix Dixie piled foundations for new build

Enquiry No.435

A new brochure from Helifix gives details of how its versatile, high performance, Dixie micro-pile system can be used to provide reliable and economical structural support for new permanent and temporary buildings. Piled foundations are likely to be more cost-effective than traditional foundations requiring deep excavations, when load-bearing strata is at a deeper level. Helifix circular hollow section piles are simply screwed vertically into the ground, to the required depth, and then topped with an engineered steel plate. This plate is then either cast into reinforced concrete pile caps / ground beams, for traditional new build construction, or connected directly to the base of modular or temporary steel structures. Exeter based renewables and underfloor heating specialist, OMNIE has donated one of its Staples pipework systems for the construction of a fully wheelchair accessible home that has been built to accommodate a former Royal Marine and his family, after he contracted a serious illness on overseas service and can now no longer walk. Corporal Phil Eaglesham contracted the relatively rare Q fever while serving in Afghanistan five years ago with the condition unfortunately proving to be degenerative and making his existing home near Taunton increasingly unsuitable. In order to help the family, The Royal Marines Charity appealed for help to construct a bespoke dwelling to meet his specific needs, on a site in Taunton. OMNIE was amongst a number of building product manufacturers to make donations in kind, with the 600 metre of Staples underfloor heating pipe and made-to-measure manifold being provided to keep the entire ground floor of the twostorey property at a carefully controlled temperature. Sharky Ward, the Deputy CEO of The Royal Marines Charity, commented: “Thanks to the incredible help we have received in particular Persimmon Homes, who donated the land, Haldons Chartered Surveyors who are project managing the build, and Grainge Architects who developed the plans, all free of charge. OMNIE have played key role and very kindly donated the underfloor heating system, which will help provide a consistent temperature, which is critical to Corporal Eaglesham’s needs.  We are hugely grateful to everyone who has made this dream become a reality, delivering a bespoke house in the most cost effective manner.” The layout of the property has created a totally wheelchair friendly environment across both floors, linked by a lift.

to create room temperatures of 19, 21 and 22 centigrade, the pipe layouts were securely clipped down over thermal insulation before a wet screed was laid to provide good heat transference. Phil Eaglesham said: “This house gives us the chance to make a life and a future again. Even as my condition deteriorates we can still get on with our lives to the best of our ability, rather than fire-fighting every issue that comes with every little change in my condition. The independence which the house layout gives me is second to none.” Suitable for operating at low temperatures, the different OMNIE UFH systems available are suitable for delivering optimum efficiency in conjunction with high performance gas or oil boilers as well as the company’s own range of air or ground source heat pumps.

As well as the integral garage, the downstairs contains a master bedroom suite with shower room, while the linked kitchen, dining and living rooms feature folding doors, which open out onto the rear garden. These areas, together with a lobby and separate cloakroom are heated by six pipe circuits connected back to the five port manifold and controlled by programmable room thermostats. Designed Enquiry
