Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “The UK is suffering from a chronic shortage of homes and that’s as true now as it was before the UK voted to leave the EU. Although the Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the scarcity of homes, builders will be waiting for signs that confirm that this isn’t mere rhetoric. The call from the Local Government Association (LGA) for a ‘national renaissance’ in council house building is timely and we urge the Government to allow local government the freedom and support it needs to once again take a leading role in building new homes. At present, for every £1 spent on house building by the Government, roughly £4 is spent on housing benefit. By increasing public spend on house building, homes will become more affordable and at the same time, significantly decrease the housing benefit bill. With uncertainty beginning to weigh on the private sector, as evidenced by the negative construction statistics released recently, support for a significant upscaling in social house building would send out a strong, reassuring message. Prevention is better than the cure and we believe that a commitment by the Government to crank up its programme of council house building would serve to ease any jitters in the building industry and the wider economy.”

BMF calls for construction industry Brexit talks The Builders Merchants Federation is leading calls for urgent talks with the government over the impact of Brexit on the construction industry. Following the appointment of the new Prime Minister, Theresa May and her Cabinet, the BMF have written to key Ministers to highlight the urgency and importance to the UK economy and jobs of the construction sector in the context of Brexit. The BMF have welcomed the new Prime Minister’s early pledge that the new government will prioritise housebuilding, which is recognition of both the importance of the sector and the current uncertainty in the economy. The BMF represents around 550 companies who supply materials to 80% of Britain's builders, plumbers, joiners and decorators. Merchants are the barometer of the health of the construction industry. BMF have called for a clear plan from the new Prime Minister and the Government that includes: Continued on page 2

Where there’s blame, there’s a claim

Publisher - Lawrence McDermott Sales Manager - Lee Butler

This is a slogan which has always been useful to the insurance industry as it makes people think about buying cover for their business. When we sell public liability and professional indemnity insurance, we will always discuss the possibility of a claim. For example, anybody using heat, such as a plumber or roofer, has to be careful about starting a fire on the property that they are working on. For those working at height, there is the danger of dropping tools and materials onto people and property. For those excavating ground, there is the danger of cutting cables and breaking pipes. However, what is not often mentioned is the defence of unjust accusations and alleged damage which is either not connected with our client, or has been fabricated. A recent example of this is a large job where my client was one of the many subcontractors. There had been an incident on site where damage had been done, but it couldn’t be proven that anyone was at fault. In fact, there had been a legal battle between the employer and the contractor for around 18 months, with the employer failing to successfully make a claim against them. The employer’s next step was to approach the sub-contractor for compensation – our client. This was a long time after the incident, but our client had a

good recollection of the circumstances and was able to present all of the known facts to his insurer. The insurers for our client took over dealing with the employer and managed to successfully defend the claim, although this involved appointing solicitors at a large cost. Had our client not have insurance in place, they would have either had to pay their own solicitor costs to defend themselves, or pay out to the employer their entire claim and legal costs, despite the fact that they were entirely innocent. In the business world, it is sad to think that it is often the one with the most money that will win a legal battle, leaving small businesses severely out of pocket or bankrupt. In summary, it should be remembered that public liability and professional indemnity insurance don’t just pay out compensation for justified claims, but also pay for solicitors, barristers and other expert help in order to defend unjustified claims. This means that when considering buying a policy, you should not only consider the likelihood of making a mistake, but also what your abilities are of defending yourself against unjustified claims. Ray Colenutt DipCII, the writer of this article, has over 35 years of arranging insurance in the construction industry and is the managing director of Versatile Insurance Professionals Ltd 01837 658955

Construction output fell in May as house-building slows again Construction output in May 2016 is estimated to have decreased by 2.1% compared with April 2016. Latest estimates from the Office for National Satistics say that both all new work and repair and maintenance decreased in May 2016, falling by 2.6% and 1.4% respectively. Year-on-year, construction output decreased by 1.9% in May 2016 compared with May 2015. In the three months March to May 2016, construction output decreased by 2.1% compared with the

BMF calls for construction industry Brexit talks Continued from front cover • Assurances of continued support for housebuilding, investment in infrastructure to unlock sites, and further reforms to speed up the planning process. • Recognition of the importance of investing in apprenticeships and other skills development in the industry to build a workforce for the future, taking account of the impact of the possible end of free movement. • Guarantees that the construction industry will be consulted about the impact of the transition to operating within a potential UK only framework, including new product standards and a possible return to the emphasis on the British Kite Mark. • Confirmation that the BMF along with other key industry bodies, including the FMB and the CPA, will be consulted and involved in a dialogue with the government as Brexit talks and negotiation develops. previous three months and by 1.7% compared with the same period of 2015. The main contribution to May’s decrease came from private new housing, which – amid the uncertainty of the run-up to the EU referendum – was down 3.2% compared with April. New housing has now slowed in every month of 2016 except February. Infrastructure continues to be volatile, with periods of expansion and contraction throughout the time series. In May 2016 there was an increase of 0.6% which is the first month-on-month increase since December 2015. On the year there was a fall of 10.3%, which is the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year decreases.

Building services sector agrees 2% pay rise for operatives The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has reached agreement with the Unite trade union for new hourly rates of pay for operatives across the sector. A 2% wage increase has been agreed from October this year, rising to 2.5% from October 2017. Further negotiations are planned to take place later this year to agree

wage levels that will apply for the two years from September 2018 under the terms of the BESA national agreement for operatives in building engineering services trades. The union initially requested a four-year agreement from October 2016 with significant increases to wages and benefits, but the association argued that a two-stage agreement and a stepped increase were more appropriate in the current economic climate. Unite had also asked for significant increases to weekly sickness and accident benefits, along with rates of holiday pay, but it was agreed that these should rise pro rata in line with salary increases. Annual paid

holiday entitlements for workers will, however, increase by one day to 24 days from February 2020. “We enjoyed our usual robust but constructive negotiations with Unite this year,” said Peter Rimmer, BESA director of employment and skills who retires this September after 26 years of negotiating these national agreements. He added: “Needless to say, the union argued hard for a considerably higher hourly rate, but accepted that the compromise reached was fair and in the long-term interests of both employers and operatives.”

Guardian invites Glasstec visitors to be inspired

Densoband Flexible Sealant at London Gateway Densoband flexible sealant was one of three Winn & Coales protection products chosen for use in the original construction of the London Gateway at Stanford-le-Hope, Essex. The principal contractor was a joint venture between Laing 0'Rourke and Dredging International. For this phase 1 project sub-contractors Aggregate Industries applied approximately 12,000 metres of black Densoband as a flexible sealant between asphalt and concrete. This included concrete channels to take away surface water, gullies and bays.

Aggregate Industries has now just completed a new project, as main contractor, which entailed application of approximately 2,000 metres Densoband in jointing areas between asphalt and concrete on the general parking areas of the Gateway. Miles Macadam then applied a final Hardicrete grout on this park area. Densoband is a polymer modified bitumen strip which is approved for use in asphalt surface course joints for asphalt, and asphalt to concrete interface, as an alternative to the previously commonly used bitumen. Because water, salts, pollutants and weed seeds etc cannot penetrate the sealed joint, it remains unaffected by extremes of temperature and further deterioration. website: I enquiry 503

British engineering helps deliver community benefits

British engineering expertise is helping a new school deliver community benefits beyond the norm. Wynne Construction has been commissioned by Gwynedd Council to construct the new Ysgol Hafod Lon Newydd, in Penrhyndeudraeth, for 100 pupils with special educational needs. Under the contract, Wynne Construction aimed to deliver optimum community benefits, including giving practical work experience for college students, employing apprentices, and helping provide training opportunities through the local supply chain. Air movement specialist Gilberts (Blackpool) Ltd was specified to design and engineer the louvres and support steelwork. Employing its in-house technical expertise, Gilberts used British-sourced aluminium and steel to create the screen, which extends to 28m long, and is over 2m high. The completed structure hides the air handling units and mechanical plant from view, and reduces exposure to and impact of the local weather, whilst allowing good airflow around the plant to optimise efficient operation. Streetly Academy at the top of the class with Gerflor! At the Streetly Academy in Sutton Coldfield they offer a full and varied curriculum enriched by their sports college status and when it came to refurbishment of the academy’s flooring needs, choosing the right products would be crucial. Being truly ‘fit for purpose’ and delivering overall lifetime cost savings would be a parameter not to be ignored. It’s this very process that international flooring and interiors specialist Gerflor know only too well. The appointed Architects, Gould Singleton would specify Gerflor’s Taralay Impression Control which has a slip resistant finish complying with the Health and Safety Executives pendulum slip resistance test giving a low slip potential of greater than thirty-six and a surface roughness measurement, again giving a low slip resistance greater than twenty.

The project posed many challenges which were successfully overcome thanks to Sto’s technical and product expertise, and ability to work in close collaboration with the other parties involved. The new Monsoon Forest display area is the UK’s largest zoological building, and forms part of the Zoo’s £40m ‘Islands’ project - the biggest development in UK zoo history - and so it was subjected to particular scrutiny and had to be completed to the very highest standards.

GreenCoat house named as finalist for the RIBA National Award for Architecture A newly constructed residence in London, made with the colour coated product, GreenCoat PLX BT from SSAB, has been named as a finalist for the RIBA National Award – one of UK’s most prestigious prizes for architecture.

The home and office residence named as a finalist has been dubbed the “Tin House” and was designed by the award-winning architect Henning Stummel. The construction features an exterior that is made entirely of GreenCoat PLX BT from SSAB, a company recognized worldwide for producing one of the best steels in the world. The Tin House is one of only 20 other buildings to be named a finalist for the national award and will be featured on the Channel 4 TV programme, Grand Designs: House of the Year, a famous TV programme in the UK showcasing unique built houses. The winners will be presented later in the autumn 2016. The Tin House design features six interconnected pyramidal pods where GreenCoat PLX BT was chosen as the only material for the exterior of the construction. Typically utilized for long strip roofing, GreenCoat PLX BT was not only used on the roof, but also on façades and for all other exterior details.

“The choice to use GreenCoat PLX BT came down to its unique aesthetics as well as leading environmental properties. The tinsmiths who performed the build with GreenCoat PLX BT were very pleased with how easy it was to apply as well as the finished appearance, which utilized 500 mm sections between seams for a crisp look,” explains Sean McHugh, Sales Manager at Newell Roofing, SSAB’s supply partner for GreenCoat PLX BT products in the UK. Besides being well-known among tinsmiths for its easy hand forming and long colour retention, GreenCoat PLX BT

features a Bio-based Technology (BT) with a substantial portion of the traditional fossil part replaced by a bio-based alternative. This unique, patented solution by SSAB reduces the environmental footprint significantly. GreenCoat Nordic quality colour coated products are highly resistant to corrosion, UV radiation as well as scratches. They provide building specifiers with a significantly lighter material compared to alternative solutions and have a low temperature elongation for reduced buckling.

The Tin House has already been named a winner of the RIBA Regional Award for the London area. RIBA awards and prizes have been honouring the best architecture in the UK and around the world for the past 50 years.

Insight Data, the data experts for the construction industry, has revealed an increase in social housing activity with building firms now actively chasing social housing project work. Jade Greenhow, Operations Manager said; “the number of building contractors winning work within the social housing market has risen by 20.5% in the last 12 months alone, with 582 construction firms now working within the social housing sector”. The trend looks set to continue as contractors – and building product suppliers – are keen to capitalise on this sector after several years of stagnation. “According to the Department of Environment, local authority acquisition and construction grew from 285 in 2014 to 1030 in 2015. Speaking in January 2016 a spokesperson explained how 13,000 keys were being handed out for social housing, with output and demand increasing.” This creates significant demand for building and maintenance products. Using Insight Data’s ‘Construction File’ database means manufacturers and distributors can now target the main contractors, house-builders and developers directly. Jade added; “The Construction File is our database of the UK’s 1,100 major construction firms and contains detailed information on the type of work they undertook, financial data, and those crucial key decision makers, complete with over 3,000 verified email addresses”.

The world’s first use of the new universal aluminium HD beam from Layher is bringing key benefits to a major refurbishment project in Reading. Constructed entirely from light weight aluminium, the design features integral Allround rosettes as bracing points which utilise customers’ existing stocks to lace and brace pairs of beams together. It can work with a variety of other adaption parts to allow integration of the beams into the scaffold itself to make full use of the beam’s and scaffold’s capacities which represents important gains compared with fixing to the outside of the scaffold that can weaken strength capacities. The project in Reading is seeing the transformation of the old ‘Yell House’ office building for Crown Student Living – ‘Queen’s Court’ will provide accommodation for 400 students. Scaffolding contractor Archway Services is using the beam both as a support for the scaffold structure above and, vitally, as a means of maintaining full public access to the on-site car park throughout the 11-month refurbishment programme.

“The project on the L-shaped building, which is under the management of Osborne, features a total of 16 boarded lifts rising to an overall height of 30 metres,” says Sean Pike, Managing Director of Layher Ltd. “The car park within, which serves one of Reading’s main shopping centres, is accessed via an entry and exit tunnel at one of end of the main 50-metre façade – neither of which could be closed off at any point, not least during the build-up to the Christmas shopping period. Our new universal aluminium HD beam design has been positioned across the two adjacent openings to provide the optimum solution, with no road closures or even overnight work

required.” The significance of the latter point is underscored by the refurbishment site being linked directly to one of the town’s most prestigious hotels. The beam was built at ground level on an adjacent plaza and then craned in two sections into position from above. A scaffold tower at each end and a third support structure at the centre point allowed the two wide access tunnels – large enough for shop delivery vehicles – to be maintained underneath. Leg load capacities of 116 kNs then enabled the full scaffold structure above to be supported by the 1.25 metre deep beam which itself has a total span of 26 metres. The design features 48.3 mm o/d vertical posts and diagonals. The uprights include integral rosettes and also allow traditional tube and couplers to be used as an alternative means of lacing and bracing. “However, one of the key characteristics of the new beam design is its 60 mm o/d top chord,” says Mel Archer, Managing Director of Archway Services. “It is this that provides the strength and which also enables the scaffold above to be connected at a wide choice of fixing positions. Compared to a tube and fitting alternative, the benefits are clear-cut in terms of complexity, time and manpower.” Archway Services also used Layher Allround to provide full scaffold access to all faces of the building which were then clad in fire retardant sheeting. Apart from its light weight, which eased handling and

erection operations, the wide bay design of Allround and its need for only minimal cross-bracing have created the optimum layout for workforce access and movement during refurbishment work. This includes the installation of a new façade and windows throughout and the addition of two new storeys at roof level. “The system also enabled our workforce to accommodate a series of bay windows that project outwards from the building,” adds Mel Archer who notes that the reduced number of scaffolders needed for the installation helped to optimise safe working at height procedures. Layher steel decking was used throughout with the company’s stairtower systems also installed at key access points. Additionally, a full width fan structure provided protection across the main car park entrance and exit and also above a second archway created above a further access road at the rear of the building. Here, Archway Services used Layher’s established bridging beam system. “This is an excellent demonstration of the benefits that can be gained from the use of the new universal aluminium HD beam and we are proud to have achieved a genuine ‘world’s first’,” says Sean Pike. “It is providing an important solution to a key requirement at the site for the length of the project, fulfilling the specific needs of all concerned – from the shopping centre and car park management to the local authority and, of course, Crown Student Living,” he concludes.

Originally designed by acclaimed architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1930s, the six-storey Grade II listed building has being converted into 85 luxury apartments, while ensuring that many of the original design features are retained or reinstated to enhance its art deco style. The building’s main atrium is at the heart of the SE Controls solution, as the smoke ventilation system is designed to vent smoke from the atrium in the event of a fire to ensure escape routes are kept clear. To achieve this, SE Controls designed, installed and commissioned the system, which comprises 37 SHEVTEC® automatically controlled louvres, which are manufactured and tested in accordance with BS EN 12101: 2. The SHEVTEC® louvres also incorporate ‘fall protection’ to increase safety, as well as using IP rated external motors, which are essential to allow easy access for future maintenance. A further 21 low level air inlet louvres and linear door actuators also form part of the system, all of which are controlled by a series of OS2 control panels with integral battery back up and fully compliant with the relevant sections

Wernick Realises Architect’s Vision for Edgbaston Community Centre About Wernick Buildings Ltd: Wernick Buildings Ltd is part of the Wernick Group, which is one of the UK’s largest independent manufacturers, and suppliers of modular steel framed accommodation for sale or hire.

July 2016

Until recently, Edgbaston community Centre operated from the local Junior School, but thanks to school expansion the centre has needed to find a space of its own.

We used an optimised modular design for maximum manufacturing efficiency, and this ultimately brought the cost into the desired bracket for Birmingham City Council.”

A purpose built facility was required, and with support from Birmingham City Council they approached architectural firm Acivico for a new building to be designed. The building promised multifunctional rooms; changing facilities, a spacious hall, a working kitchen and cafeteria. The exterior was to be finished with brick and render and topped off with a stylish butterfly roof.

Once designs were approved the centre was built off-site at Wernick’s main manufacturing site in Kenfig, South Wales in two weeks. The building was installed in just two days, a substantially quicker and thus more cost effective process than that of a traditional build.

But when the Council approached a traditional “on-site” construction firm, they found the cost quoted to be far too high for their intended budget. When the construction firm discovered this, they recommended Wernick Buildings to provide a cost effective off-site solution. Wernick Buildings worked closely with Acivico to create a modular building that held true to the original architectural concept, but at a more economical price. Wernick’s new design reduced the cost of the building by 30%, bringing it within the range of the Council’s budget. Managing Director of Wernick Buildings, Andy King, was involved in the design of the new building. He told us; “We wanted to stay close to the aesthetic concept used by Acivico, but at a much lower cost.

Wernick managed to deliver everything requested in the original brief, including the butterfly roof which perfectly matches the buildings original aesthetic design. Tony Bailey, the centre manager, told us that staff and visitors alike were impressed with the new building. “It’s spacious, airy and light, it’s really got the wow factor. It’s a much nicer working environment for the staff, and our visitors have nothing but compliments for the building.”

The materials and technologies in our homes and commercial buildings are advancing rapidly. While this is great news for designers and engineers, it poses challenges for tradespeople responsible for fitting new projects and refurbishing existing buildings. Here John Cove, marketing manager at power tool accessories and hand tool specialist, Starrett, looks at the top five hole saw hacks that can make these jobs a breeze. Whether you're a plumber, an electrician or a carpenter you will be all too familiar with the challenges involved in cutting and fitting various materials day to day. Surfaces made of metal, timber, engineered wood, plastic, glass, porcelain and masonry, among others, can all require different approaches to create a clean hole. It's not just surfaces either. Being able to adapt to your surroundings when you come up against non-standard fittings, jobs that product a lot of debris and dust, and even environments that are poorly ventilated can be a real hassle, taking up precious time on the job and reducing productivity. However, making some simple changes to your workflow and choosing the right tool for the job can make all the difference. So here are our top five hole saw hacks to help you do just that. 1. Cutting porcelain tiles Ceramic tiles have been around for centuries, so we’re all used to seeing them on everything from flooring and kitchen backsplashes to bathrooms and even as decorative murals. Advancements in production techniques have made porcelain tiles more popular than ever. Although ceramic tiles are made from a soft mineral clay substrate topped with a glaze, porcelain tiles are fired at higher temperatures and pressures. This liquefies the mineral into solid glass, so the tile itself is much harder and denser, making it ideal for a wide variety of applications.

This strength has made porcelain tiles a popular modern interior design choice, with tiles being used in areas other than simply on floors, kitchens and bathrooms. However, the hardness of the tile makes it very difficult to cut using a simple tile cutter, and porcelain tiles are also more prone to chipping during the cutting process. When a job requires cutting holes to fit a tile around cables and pipes, or fittings need to be attached to a tiled surface, always use a hole saw with a diamond-grit coated tip. The diamond coating will easily cut through porcelain, glass, ceramics, brick and stone without chipping or breaking. When accompanied with proper water-cooling, you will be left with a clean cut and smooth surface finish.

July 2016

Top five hole saw hacks The challenges tradespeople face and how to overcome them 2. Hole enlargement Turning up to a job fitting downlights and realising that the 75mm super low voltage spotlights that the customer has specified need to fit into the 50mm holes left by the previous lights can put you in a bit of a pickle. Where it would normally be suitable to simply drill a 75mm hole to fit the light, here there is no obvious way to pilot the 75mm hole saw. In this case, consider replacing the pilot drill with a hole enlargement arbor. The arbor can be fitted with a hole saw that has the same diameter as the existing hole — this acts as the pilot — as well as a larger diameter hole saw, allowing the larger diameter to be cut in one single motion. 3. Cutting thick steel There’s nothing more frustrating when a tool breaks unexpectedly. However, for most tools, this is rarely something that happens out of the blue, but is rather caused by long-term wear on a tool that can lead to a sudden break. Cutting steel is a perfect example of something that can cause this. Although regular hole saws will do the job, cutting thicker steel can cause the tool to become hot, quickly increasing wear on the cutting surface and significantly reducing product life. When cutting thicker steel, consider using a carbide tipped hole saw designed specifically for deep cutting of steel up to 25mm thick. This operates at a higher speed for a faster cut, preventing the saw from getting hot and wearing down. By taking such precautions contractors can increase the lifespan of their power tool accessories and deliver a higher return on investment. 4. Cut out unpleasant fumes Composite and engineered wood, including medium-density fibreboard (MDF), might provide a versatile, lightweight and strong building material for a variety of applications — from cabinets, desks and flooring — however, cutting it can produce really unpleasant fumes. The density of the fibreboard can cause the hole saw to heat up, potentially melting the glue adhesive in the composite itself. To overcome this problem and speed up the cut, some contractors will drill numerous pilot holes around the circumference of the hole to be cut and then use a hole saw to finish the job. However, this method is time consuming

and doesn’t result in a perfect, clean cut. When drilling MDF, engineered and composite woods that contain adhesives, as well as plastics and plasterboard, consider using a tungsten carbide tipped multipurpose hole saw. This will deliver cutting speeds that are up to five times faster than a typical bi-metal hole saw and the rapid cut will build up less residual heat, giving less time for the adhesive to reach a melting temperature. 5. Dust and debris Most contractors will testify that one of the biggest pet peeves of customers is site cleanliness. Although maintaining a clean working environment is a habit of all good tradespeople, it is inevitable that most jobs will produce excess dust and debris that needs to be cleaned up afterwards. Many solutions have been tried included shoe boxes with holes drilled in them and various arrangements involving vacuum cleaners. Ideas like these might work well for simple tasks or one off jobs, but it can become dangerous for more complex or hard to reach areas where ladders might be involved. This can not only pose an insurance liability, but failure to protect the motor of a power tool from dust and debris, leading to its eventual failure, can also void the warranty on most power tools. When sawing or cutting using a hand held power tool, a debris collector attachment that can catch the dust and debris created during the cutting process, ready for easy disposal, can make things so much simpler. Not only is this quicker, with time saved on clean up, it also eliminates the need to mask high-risk areas prior to sawing or cutting and prevents the ingress of dust and debris into your power tool's motor housing. Get the job done There is no reason for advances in materials and design technology to get in the way of tradespeople achieving perfection. With a little ingenuity and the help of a few specialised tools, people of all trades can stay ahead of the curve and get the job done without hassle. I enquiry 522

If you own it…we CanTrack it! There are a number of ways in which machines can be stolen, from an opportunistic thief taking a ‘joy-ride’ in a digger to specific equipment being ‘stolen to order’ for export. As equipment security has improved professional thieves have developed new scams including ‘hire to steal’ which has caught out several major plant hirers in the last few months. ‘Hire to steal’ involves professional thieves hiring expensive equipment, from reputable hirers, with the intent to steal them during the hire period and ship them abroad. To add another layer of complexity to the scam, and buy themselves extra time, thieves arrange the ‘cross-hire’ of machines from one hire company to another. Hiring the target machines gives the thieves time to search for and remove tracking devices and CESAR plates before they are shipped to their final destination and new ‘owners’, well before the rightful owners realise that the machines are missing. In late May a major hirer, and long-time CanTrack customer, was the victim of a sophisticated ‘hire to steal’ scam involving 5 telehandlers, a mix of JCB and Manitou models all CESAR registered. The thieves used a dummy company to hire the 5 machines. When the hire ended and the hirer went to collect the machines they were

gone, and so was the hirer. Fortunately, all 5 machines were fitted with CanTrack supplied AppelloGEO tracking devices. As soon as the theft was reported to CanTrack, at 19.00 on a Wednesday, the team got straight to work, sending activation messages to the machine’s trackers and obtaining accurate current locations. As the trackers woke-up and confirmed their locations it was clear that they were widely distributed. The first unit to wake was relatively close, in Waltham Abbey, adjacent to the M25. A CanTrack investigator was immediately despatched and he tracked the unit to an industrial area in the town. Unfortunately, at 2 a.m. the CanTrack investigator was unable to legally access the machine and so he had to wait until 8 a.m. the next morning (Thursday) to meet with Thames Valley Police on-site. INTERFLOOR’S revamped Gripperrods range is THE BEST OF BRITISH Leading flooring manufacturer Interfloor has revamped its Gripperrods® carpet gripper range to give a highly competitively priced British-made quality product that stands out from the competition. Interfloor’s ‘Regular’ carpet gripper is now being manufactured as ‘Gripperrods ®Standard’ gripper at its Dumfries factory using high quality birch wood and is engineered to give a technically superior performance compared to alternative products. The entirely UK made gripper range means customers will benefit from improved quality as well as knowing they will be supporting local industry and reducing the environmental impact associated with Chinese production. The differentiated Gripperrods® range, now with improved branded packaging, comprises four products: Gripperrods® Standard, a competitively priced entry level gripper; Gripperrods® Tackfast, the best-

selling gripper; Gripperrods® Professional, a top of the range gripper, which is best in class; and Gripperrods® Contract, a wider gripper for more specialist commercial applications. The Gripperrods® Professional and Gripperrods® Tackfast products include a number of new features designed to give greater stability in all types and qualities of sub-floor. Both have improved specifications including wider strips (27.11mm and 24.03mm), and more floorholding pre-nails and precision pins per length. “By bringing manufacturing of our entire range back to the UK we can guarantee quality and service. This, coupled with the enhanced specification of the premium products, makes us confident that the new Gripperrods® range provides clear benefits for installers looking for quality products at an affordable price and which offer unbeatable performance,” said Interfloor CEO John Cooper.

Fifteen years ago, the school’s ‘monastic barn’ kitchen was fitted with Altro Whiterock White and Altro Stronghold 30 to provide a high level of safety, hygiene and aesthetics. More recently, in 2014, Altro Whiterock was installed around the lift shaft of a dumb waiter in the kitchen.

The proven combination of Altro WhiterockTM hygienic wall cladding and Altro Stronghold 30TM safety flooring has been so successful in the kitchen at one of the world’s oldest schools, that after 15 years of service it’s been chosen again for a total refurbishment.

• Almost 100 tonnes of pins (that’s 900m pins!) • Over 82 tonnes of nails (that’s 170mm nails!)

The King's School in Ely, Cambridgeshire, is a co-educational independent day and boarding school. It was founded in 970 AD.

Every year Interfloor’s Dumfries factory consumes : • Over 2,000 tonnes of birch plywood

The school has been so happy with the long term performance of Altro Whiterock and Altro Stronghold 30 together that there was no hesitation in selecting the integrated system of compatible hygienic wall cladding and safety flooring again when the entire kitchen recently underwent a refit. As the system is fully integrated, it fits together perfectly to provide a hygienic, watertight solution for commercial kitchens. Shirley Jolly, the school’s catering manager, says: “This is a busy commercial kitchen, which produces 1,600 meals per day with three sittings, so the flooring and wall cladding has to be hygienic, tough, durable, practical, easy to clean and have superb safety credentials. Plus of course it needs to be suitable for use in a very old building — our kitchen dates back to 970 AD. “In addition, we are very proud of our Five Star food and hygiene rating from the Environmental Health Agency, so we are passionate about maintaining our excellent standards. Using the right products in our kitchen to help us achieve that is paramount. Fifteen years ago we had Altro Whiterock installed three quarters of the way up the

If the gripper made every year was laid in a long line, it would reach almost three quarters of the way round the world!

kitchen walls, and we have been delighted with it over that time. It’s hygienic and has been very easy to maintain, just needing a regular wipe down. It’s proven to be ideal for our busy commercial kitchen. For us it’s a tried and tested product. “So we definitely wanted to use it again for the refurbishment, but this time we wanted it floor to ceiling — giving total encapsulation. This meant that we could cover all the hard-to reach places around the doors and windows - and there are some tricky areas as this is a very old structure to make cleaning as easy as possible and further improve hygiene.” Shirley continues: “The Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring was also a very good choice for us 15 years ago. As a safety flooring it’s second to none, plus it’s incredibly hard-wearing and nice looking as well. It was still in very good condition, but we decided to upgrade it with new Altro Stronghold 30 for the refit.” Altro’s integrated floor and hygienic wall cladding system offers the best possible protection against bacteria, bugs and vermin. It makes cleaning easier too. Designed to address the issues commonly found in kitchens – slips, contamination, cleaning and maintenance, the Altro system doesn’t just protect the people who use it; it also protects the environment and those responsible for the health and safety of employees and visitors.

Priming for Success - FLAG Paints Ltd has launched the Advanced Technologies range.

The new range, which is universally compatible with most traditional top-coats, represents a concise selection of essential problem solving primers. The range features 4 products, designed to help address various issues affecting a wide range of areas around both home and commercial environments. Universal Primer (Water Based) Effectively primes, seals and blocks stains for a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces. A ‘bond coat’ primer that’s great for hard-to-stick surfaces, offering excellent adhesion with minimal preparation. Also prevents rust formation when applied over clean ferrous metal such as iron and steel. Universal Primer contains a biocide that protects the dried coating against fungal degradation, making it ideal for highhumidity areas such as bathrooms and utility rooms. Ultimate Primer (Shellac Based) Offering excellent adhesion to glossy surfaces - even glass. Blocks stubborn and persistent stains. Based on an advanced shellac formula that seals porous surfaces with excellent enamel holdout. Suitable for use on water stains, fungal degradation, nicotine, oil stains, marker pen stains and more. Designed to permanently block odours (from smoke and fire damage to odours from pets and nicotine). The dried film is non-toxic and hypo-allergenic.

The new range of primer products aims to raise awareness of how to deal with difficult problem areas by selecting the right solution for the problem. The primer is often the most important coat, if the primer is wrong the rest of the paint system is highly likely to fail.

Quickslide has launched into aluminium windows with a pledge to make the material as easy for the installer as choosing PVC-U. The Yorkshire-based fabricator has an enviable reputation for both quality and service in PVC-U and now, Managing Director Michael Connor says it is out to apply the same high standards to aluminium: “We want to smash the myth that it takes over a month to turn round a good aluminium window. We are also offering installers the same level of service and support – as well as the best possible leadtimes – that we have given them with PVCU for over 15 years. So, whether they are new to Quickslide or already using our PVCU range, they will find it just as easy working with us for aluminium or indeed both.”

Quickslide’s aluminium windows are based on the Alitherm 800 system from SMARTS, which offers the potential for WER ‘A’-Rating, U-Value 1.1W/m2k, with a basic soft-coat IGU. Michael said: “It is one of the newest systems on the market and is still seeing heavy investment from the extrusion house with new developments such as new sash styles, sill options and hardware options coming on stream all the time. It is also equally well-suited to the domestic end-user and commercial applications, so installers

have the widest ranges of opportunities in their existing customer base. “The system has also been designed to achieve PAS24 and we hope to gain our own accreditation as soon as possible.” Quickslide has been making aluminium doors at its Brighouse manufacturing unit for some time. Four years ago, it launched the SMARTS bi-fold and more recently the sliding patio. I enquiry 533

Best-known for its acclaimed sliding sash windows, Quickslide has been instrumental in bringing this former niche product into the mainstream of the retrofit and new-build markets, but it also manufactures a wide range of other styles of windows and doors for trade and commercial customers.

Eagle Brae Log Cabins have NorDan windows

“We chose NorDan to supply the timber windows for our 8 new log cabins, because of their long term proven track record for quality craftsmanship, “says Mike SpencerNairn, owner and developer of Eagle Brae. “NorDan offered us the flexibility we needed in bespoke design for our unique log cabin structures.” Eagle Brae is a unique development of log cabins built as a five star holiday letting business 23 miles west of Inverness, near Beauly, in the Scottish Highlands. Mike Spencer-Nairn used Western Red Cedar logs specially sourced from British Columbia, Canada. “Each cabin was built by master craftsmen using authentic Norwegian techniques,” he continues. “None of the logs has been through a sawmill meaning every log’s natural beauty has been retained in the cabin.” No surprise then, that NorDan windows were used to complete the building envelope, with their precision manufacture and flexibility of specification. Eagle Brae cabins have side swing timber windows and outward opening double doors, with some fixed lights, from NorDan all finished with an aluminium cladding to extend their life in use. “NorDan was also able to customise the finishing options for us to meet our specific aesthetic requirements. It was this ability of NorDan to respond to our unique design requirements coupled with their trusted reputation for quality which convinced us to go with NorDan. If and when we build some more log cabins, we will use NorDan again,” continues Mike. The log cabins specified black handles, which were a special order for this project. “There was a desire to have the windows as

More than 500 PVC-U windows were chosen for an 11-storey residential newbuild, X1 The Exchange, close to the prestigious Media City in Salford Quays after the developer was presented with specification and costings that showed the material to be an economic alternative to the aluminium frames originally specified. The windows, as well as 100 doors, were made and installed by Spectus Approved Window Contractor Jade Windows using the Spectus Elite 70 bevelled system with 8.8mm laminated acoustic glass and additional EPDM seal. An untextured Anthracite grey (RAL 7016) foil was specified by planners as a close visual match when replacing aluminium, as Jade’s Ryan Fozard explained: “It is happening more and more that a client may change to PVC-U when they are shown the performance against the cost, so of course it is important to have a visual match as well, whether it is at the request of the client, the architect or planning authorities.”

Olympia Exhibition Centre. The SIMONSWERK stand, number E 664, located in the Design & Build section, will have a feature display of their award winning TECTUS® fully concealed hinge system. In the past year further innovative options have been added to the range and the series now covers load capacities from 40 to 300 kg with models for specific scopes of application including door fascias up to 8mm, rebated doors, recessed frame facings and power transfer. Also on display will be the stylish 25 year performance guaranteed TRITECH fire rated solid brass hinge with concealed bearings and new versions of the heavy duty VARIANT range with Finger Protection, 400kg and “Care” options – the latter specifically designed for public sector buildings to allow real clearance widths for doors to open to 90° to satisfy the most stringent requirements.

traditional as possible, with no modern sliding hinge mechanisms visible. So we recommended our side swing window, which uses hinges similar to a door,” says Calum Sinclair from NorDan’s Aberdeen office. “The client was also extremely keen for all window handles to have a black finish instead of our standard more contemporary chrome finish. Our internal vents were also powder coated to match the windows so there was no visible contrast on the inside.” NorDan manufactures timber windows out of 8 factories across Europe. Founded in Norway in 1926, the firm is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. Products have a certified long life in use, largely because they are expertly manufactured from high quality slow growing raw material with dense woodgrain. And only the best parts of the timber logs are used in manufacture. That stock which passes quality control is finger jointed and glued before being transported to production.

Opting for the Benefits of Timber Windows and Doors can absorb moisture. As it does the wood swells and twists in the direction of the grain of the wood. It is this movement that results in the detrimental warping. At Dale we use Multi-layered, 'engineered' timber. By layering wood with the grain of its neighbour lying in the opposite direction, the wood’s natural properties are increased, the knot free multi-layering creates a fantastically strong material. This means warp and twist free timber, and extremely strong windows and doors that are impervious to the movement that causes sticking and jamming. 4. How important is the property location when specifying timber windows? Location is an important factor. Where a property is in an exposed location, opt for Stormproof windows or ‘lipped casements’ which are designed for harsher environments.

Timber windows and doors have always scored highly on the style front and from an aesthetic and human interaction perspective they absolutely win hands down over other materials.

for 8 and 5 years respectively.

But the development of new manufacturing technologies means performance and longevity makes timber a great choice.

In recent studies researchers have found that when properly protected with paint or woodstain, timber windows last twice as long as PVCu

Matt Chambers, National Sales Manager at UK timber window and door specialist Dale, highlights the advantages of opting for wood. 1. Are timber products high maintenance? At Dale, all our products are made to measure to meet the customers’ specific needs. As a result, they are delivered to site fully finished and ready to fit. This is a major advantage for the builder and their customer because nothing needs doing. No glazing, painting or finishing required. The beauty of our low maintenance timber doors and windows is in the factory applied paints. The paints and stains are guaranteed

All that is required is an occasional clean and inspection to ensure the paint is in top condition.

2. What type of timber is used? At Dale we only use sustainable European Redwood timber as standard in all our windows and doors. The use of European Redwood fulfills several requirements, it is easily grown and grows with few knots, the wood itself is naturally water resistant and the tree grows beautifully straight. 3. Does timber warp? If you opt for cheap, mass produced off the shelf products then there is a high likelihood that you will encounter warping or sticking. The weak point of wood is the way that it

The edge of the window is wider than the opening so when drawn closed it forms a protective lip over the frame to protect against extreme weather conditions For windows in exposed locations make sure you opt for products that meet recognized standards. Our Stormproof windows have been independently tested and approved in accordance with BS 63751:2009 and BS 6375-2:2009 Part 1 - Weathertightness Part 2 – Operation & Strength Has exceeded requirements for: Air Permeability (EN1026) Watertightness (EN1027) Resistance to Wind (EN12211) Operating Forces (En 12046) Static Torsion (EN 14609) Racking (EN 14608) Soft Body Impact (EN 13049) Safety (EN 14609) Repeated Opening (EN 1191) 5. How Important are U values? Around 66% of the energy lost from a standard window is through the radiation travelling through the glazing, known as the U-value. The lower the U-Value, the less heat loss and the more insulation is provided.

Consider as standard double glazed units featuring performance glass along with warm edge spacer bars and argon gas for superb insulation. Look for U Values of at least 1.1 W/m2K (centre pane u-value) which equates to 45% more energy saved than with ordinary double glazing, and 80% more than single glazing. 6. Do timber windows and doors come with warranties and guarantees? It depends who you get to manufacture your windows and doors as to what guarantees you will get. At Dale our products come with a range of minimum standard guarantees. These include: 30 Years – Rot & fungal infection 10 Years – Double glazed units 10 Years – Hardware 8 Years – Paint finishes 5 Years – Stain finishes It is essential that you know how your windows and doors are manufactured, coated and painted or you could be creating problems for yourself and your customers in the future. If you are having your windows and doors manufactured by a local joiner, ask them what they do to prevent the prospect of twisting or warping once the products are fitted and exposed to a harsh winter and ensure they have paint or stain finish guarantees if they offer to finish them. 7. Ask the Experts Selecting the right windows and doors for your project is vitally important on an aesthetic, performance and longevity level. GLOBAL SUPPORT GROWS ESTABLISHED UK SANITARY BRANDS Established in 1977, Wirquin acquired their UK manufacturing facility in 2011 along with the well known Macdee and Celmac sanitary brands. This gave them a 30,000m2 factory in Doncaster, an additional 200 employees and grew the annual group turnover to over 160 million Euros. Wirquin is a family run business that started in France, but has grown to encompass 10 subsidiaries and 6 factories supplying to 82 countries across the world and employing 1400 people. It’s a sanitary equipment specialist with a mission to improve technology and hygiene in the bathroom and kitchen. Wirquin has been built on the unrivalled innovation of its products, investing 5% of their annual revenues each year into new product development. These innovations are rigorously tested and are designed to be simple to use and install. Globally, Wirquin market their business through two international brands Wirquin and Wirquin Pro complemented by a portfolio of strong local brands, Celmac and Macdee in the UK.

connectors, wetroom solutions and accessories. All these sanitary products are designed with the installer in mind to be quick and easy to fit as well as robust and reliable for the end user. A wide range of their flushing mechanisms are WRAS approved, water saving and often exceed British standards. In fact Macdee also offers a number of market leading products that have set industry benchmarks. Like the multiaward winning Macdee Motion, the only universal dual flush siphon installers need to carry. Created to fit all known lever operated cisterns thanks to its compact design and allowing the end user to save water.

CELMAC has been producing toilet seats for 125 years and is historically known for the 1930’s black crescent shaped school seat with the gap in the front. It was Celmac that partnered the pottery manufacturers of Stoke to initiate British Standard 1254 Type 1 with its Sonata seat and the BS1254 Type 2 with the Emerald seat, both of which are still manufactured today and popular in the specification channel. Today Celmac manufactures a range of thermoset and thermoplastic seats to suit every possible requirement including high traffic anti-viral seats, DocM and many contemporary décor designs in a variety of colours. They also market a choice of plastic, chrome or stainless steel hinges that are top fix, quick release and soft close. Over one million pieces are annually produced in their Doncaster based factory and a Celmac toilet seat is sold every 30 seconds in the UK. Younger sister brand, MACDEE was established just 40 years ago. It has a great reputation for its extensive range of flushing mechanisms, cisterns, frames, traps, wastes,

MacDee Quick Fit - fitted without removing the cistern The Macdee Slim Extra Flat Shower Waste is another example of one of their innovative product developments. Thanks to its overall under tray depth of just 40mm it’s been designed to fit contemporary low level shower trays and for easy maintenance from the top. Macdee is also responsible for the iconic Chrono WC wall hung frame that’s proven to be 50% faster to install than any other frame on the market and most recently the Quick Fit flush valve which can be fitted without removing the cistern. There is no question that the brands of Celmac and Macdee, under the now established ownership of the Wirquin group, will continue to receive the investment and shared global resource to flourish and grow.

MacDee Motion - the only siphon you’ll need

Wirquin has a long-term strategy, internationally orientated and continues to grow on average 10% each year. They put this down to their talented, enthusiastic and determined employees who are driving the business to be key players globally in the plumbing and sanitary market.

So Much More Than Worktop Makeovers In a recent home improvement project, Granite Transformations has showcased examples of its extended range of makeover materials, services and fittings for the kitchen and bathroom, whilst displaying the current trend toward white and off-white decorative surfaces. The kitchen of this detached rural Lancashire home, a 1980’s new-build, now features stylishly refaced worktops, high gloss replacement cabinet doors, sparkling glass mosaic splashbacks, high performance hard flooring and modern appliances and fittings, in place of the previously dark and dated look. Upstairs in the bathroom, the elegant makeover theme is repeated with seamless, waterproof wall cladding, designer mosaic inserts, large non-porous floor tiles, metallic his’n’her basins, textured oak vanity furniture, large shower unit, modern bath and sanitaryware, refacing and replacing much more traditional décor. “People associate Granite Transformations with affordable kitchen worktop makeovers, but we’re so much

This is repeated in the bathroom, where in this instance Roca bath furniture, sanitaryware, taps, shower fittings and accessories form integral parts of the complete Granite Transformations makeover. The seamless and fully water-resistant backdrop to these elegant fixtures and fittings is provided by Hydra White recycled glass agglomerate, one of the brand’s top-selling surfaces. Its outstanding technical properties, grout-free finish and generous 3m long slab size make Granite Transformations’ tough decorative surface perfect for bath panels, shower liners and coordinated floor tiles. Adding a sophisticated feature, is an eye-level frieze, using inset Liberty Pearl glass mosaic designer tiles to reflect the lighting and tone with stylish stainless-steel Roca countertop basins.

more than that,” says General Manager, Hayley Fenn. “We now extend our hallmark value for money, top quality and expert fitting across virtually every surface and fixture in the kitchen or bathroom, including branded appliances, brassware and furniture from our selected approved suppliers.” This broad brush approach is reflected in the featured kitchen makeover, where natural light from one gable-end window and a rooflight is maximised by Perla Bianca quartz worktops with integrated mirror fleck, tough, easy-clean Royal Ivory 1200x600mm floor tiles and elegant designer mosaic Metropolis Opal feature splashbacks. The original pine laminate cabinet doors have been replaced with High Gloss Champagne fittings and the adjoining dining area cabinets faced with Ultragloss Noce Marino timbergrain, all to maximise available natural and artificial light. The effect is bright, airy and spacious, illustrating a strong interior design trend toward white and off-white decorative finishes. The remodelled kitchen layout also projects the ability of Granite Transformations showrooms to supply and fit all the necessary finishing touches, in this

case sink accessories, oven, hob, extractor hood and colour-change lighting from Blanco. By coordinating the arrival of all fixtures on site, including lengthy prefabricated worktops and made-to-measure cabinet doors, and providing their own expert fitters, electricians and plumbers, Granite Transformations provides a truly all-in-one solution.

Hygienic solution to pupil bowel & bladder issues Over 10% of our schoolchildren have a continence problem. One in 10 senior primary teachers report at least one of their pupils was still not toilet trained. Bladder & bowel conditions are proven to impact on physical, emotional and psychological health & wellbeing+, and impact on a child’s

education: anecdotal evidence implies up to 25 % of a child’s reception education could be missed because they are being taken out of class to be changed. “Soiling has other considerations too,” observes Robin Tuffley, marketing manager @ Clos-o-Mat, which manufactures the UK’s

biggest-selling wash & dry toilet. “What about hygiene, not just for the child, but the member of staff helping them? What about privacy? Independence? Learning personal care skills? “Good Practice guidelines* say that ‘teachers need to find a way of ensuring the child has access to a ‘user friendly’ toilet that affords privacy’. That is actually quite simpleswitch a conventional WC for a wash & dry toilet. The built-in douching and drying ensures the child is thoroughly cleaned, to a consistent standard, without a member of staff having to wipe them with toilet tissue. It gives a more hygienic and dignified solution for everyone involved.” That opinion is backed up by real-life experience. Tor Bank School, for example, has had three Clos-o-Mats installed. Explains principal Colm Davis, “Our philosophy is about safeguarding our pupils whilst giving them the opportunity to be independent and confident. The Clos-o-Mats help achieve that, give them a sense of privacy and ensure they are clean if they get in a mess. Because the toilets clean the user, they help with their health too: we get fewer rashes from ineffective wiping. It also means teaching staff can spend more time on pupils’ classroom education as they won’t need to accompany them on toilet trips. To me, it is a best value solution.” Clos-o-Mat is the biggest manufacturer of wash & dry toilets in the UK, with its equipment having the most effective wash

available. Its brand-leading Palma Vita can be fitted with a raft of accessories to help children, able or with special needs, including paediatric support systems. The Lima Lift offers the performance benefits of the Palma Vita, but is fully height-adjustable, enabling it to be lowered for small infants or raised for adolescents and adults. Clos-o-Mat has 55 years’ experience in delivering personal hygiene solutions. The company has developed a range of equipment and support services that today meets every need, at home and away, from adapting a domestic bathroom through to a full specification hygiene room with a changing bench and ceiling track hoist in educational buildings, or similar (Changing Places) facility in commercial and public venues. Uniquely, the products are backed up by in-house support, from assessment of requirements, design of an accessible bathroom or washroom to legislative and budgetary requirements, installation and commissioning of equipment, and lifetime maintenance. Double figure milestone for Benchmarx as it celebrates 10th Anniversary As Benchmarx Kitchens and Joinery celebrates its milestone 10th Anniversary, the trade only supplier of high quality kitchens has seen its business grow from its first branch in Croydon in 2006, to over 170 branches across the country in 2016. With the company building up to its 180th branch opening later in the year, Benchmarx puts its success down to its ongoing aim to ‘save the trade time and money’. The ethos of offering outstanding customer service, streamlining the ordering process and enhancing the current level of customer service - all coupled with the right product mix available at the best price continues to see the company go from strength to strength into the next decade.

“Despite growing at a fast rate over the past 10 years, we have made a point of never being complacent. Indeed, at the start of 2012 and with a network of 85 branches under our belts, we wanted to provide our customers with an even better service than ever before. This saw us take a step back to review how and where improvements could be made, and this process remains ongoing to ensure we continue to change in line with our customers’ needs.

Terry Brown, Commercial Director at Benchmarx Kitchen and Joinery, looks at what has made the business a success over the last decade: “Since Benchmarx was first established in 2006, we have been extremely proud of the quality of our kitchens and the professional, reliable service we offer to the trade; which in turn has seen us establish a loyal customer base and repeat business. In a recent survey we were delighted to hear qualities such as ‘reliable’, ‘professional’, ‘competitive’, ‘efficient’ and ‘helpful’ all repeatedly reinforced by our trade customers.

“Streamlining our delivery service and guaranteeing that our best-selling kitchen ranges and accompanying ranges would be available within 48 hours, and backing this up with the ability to supply anything missing within 24 hours are just some of the approaches put in place to go that extra mile. “Add to this high stock levels of our most favoured product ranges and a watchful check on what is selling well, and it means our kitchen fitters are able to get their hands on the products in demand, exactly when they need it. In this business it certainly pays

to be prepared so we constantly monitor interior trends too, to ensure that all of our products hit the mark and give installers the tools to meet their customers’ demands head on across a variety of price options. This is all without having to waste time or money searching the marketplace. “Due to the costs involved, buying a kitchen remains a big decision for homeowners. So the fact that installers have the opportunity to bring their customers into a showroom so they can view the different ranges and options up close is certainly a major part of our success. “It is this unique proposition not only makes us to stand out from our competitors, but it also delivers a quick and efficient process for the installer as both they and the homeowner can discuss the different kitchen options after seeing them first-hand. It also means our dedicated team of showroom advisors and designers are on hand to answer questions and provide additional support when needed. With more branch openings

planned for the next few months, we hope this will give even more installers the opportunity to take advantage of the Benchmarx offering. Chris Larkin, Managing Director, says: “With quality and service at Benchmarx’ heart and with many branches due to open before the end of the year, there are many more developments ahead. We certainly hope to be celebrating another 10 years of success and beyond.” To find out more about the Benchmarx kitchen ranges, or to locate your nearest branch, visit:

Charity Support: “Benchmarx has always believed that if you are in a position to help make a difference, then you should. The company-wide partnership with the Macmillan charity aims to raise £3 million for this fantastic cause through staff initiatives as well as branch activity.

RINNai gives heating and hot water to new office block Rinnai, manufacturer of the energy efficient range of Infinity continuous flow water heaters and a complete range of gas fired wall heaters, is providing a brand new heating and hot water solution to offices in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.

Mark Hillier-Rees of CST says: “It was obviously the site needed to move on to something more energy efficient. We removed the old boiler and replaced it with two new Rinnai boilers on a cascade system. The redundant flue was removed and we put in place the Rinnai co-axial flue.

CST Renewables - the building services engineers - were keen to get to grips with installing a new system. This included a bespoke boiler and hot water heating package. CST Renewables was established by Control and Service Technology in response to growing interest in the renewables market from clients looking to improve energy efficiencies and dramatically lower running costs. The company, based in the Welsh town of Bridgend, is an acknowledged specialist in the commercial market but also completes domestic installations, service and repair work. The first UK installation of the Rinnai system was at a large office building where CST had been called to assess the best energy efficient replacement for a failing forced draught, flued modular boiler set up.

“This new Rinnai system is highly efficient - and due to its lack of moving parts and easy maintenance has very low annual service costs.”

The old system was low efficiency and costing the client, a property leasing company, a substantial amount in repair bills annually. The building is rented to a variety of organisations and businesses such as call and administration centre businesses.

The large 100kW condensing heating boilers are ideal for providing heating to buildings such as the Merthyr Tydfil office block and are extremely flexible as they can also provide hot water when placed in a cylinder. The Rinnai boilers are also available in 50kW and 75kW sizes. Chris Goggin, Associate Director, Rinnai UK comments: “There are clear benefits in terms of efficiencies, when considering heating and hot water as two separate systems.

I am pleased that we can provide two high efficiency market leading products in one simple turnkey solution.”

Liniar log pile proves a ‘godsend’ for garden rescue project

Mike O’Connor, Contracts Manager at Brandwells, takes up the story: “Redrow contracted us to go along and fix the problem. It was quite a mess to be honest, the timber retaining structure was rotten and falling to pieces meaning that the deck and garden above it was in serious danger of collapsing.

Plastic piling probably isn’t the first product that comes to mind in regards to domestic use, especially when appearance is just as important as strength – but one construction firm has described it as a ‘godsend’ on a recent project.

“Liniar log piling had been specified to replace it and it proved an absolute godsend! Once we’d removed all of the rotten wood the piling was nice and easy to install – much quicker than building a brick wall.

When the owners of a beautiful South Wales home discovered that a timber retaining structure in their garden was in danger of failing, they contacted the original developers for help. Redrow Homes, the company behind the estate in Pontllanfraith, called in a sub-contractor to correct the issue and specified Liniar log piling as the ideal product to replace the existing wooden support.

Easy installation “We simply dug a trench then sat the piles in concrete and, because they are hollow, it enabled us to fill them with in-situ concrete mix to create an incredibly sturdy structure. “As they’re plastic, they won’t rot like timber, so they will be there for the long term. And the homeowners were delighted with the finished job because they look really nice too. They have a wood polymer composite on the front surface for added aesthetic appeal. “I’d definitely use Liniar log piling again and would highly recommend it.”

‘Serious danger of collapse’ Brandwells Construction was founded in 1973 and has since grown to become one of the most highly-regarded building and groundworks companies in the South West and South Wales.

Numerous benefits Liniar log piling is manufactured in the UK using recycled plastic. Not only doesn’t it rot or rust, its lightweight properties make it easy to handle and transport, it can be easily cut or bored and is maintenance free.

the known characteristics of engineered drainage. We specified the Hydro-Brake® Flow Controls to provide distributed storage and attenuation throughout the site and maintain discharge volume within the planning consent limits. Hydro-Brake® Flow Controls with their low maintenance requirements are accepted for adoption by Welsh Water, so were the obvious choice. “The final flow control is a Hydro-Brake® Optimum, which offered the best storage volume to discharge ratio with a limited 450 mm sump depth, allowing us to minimise storage requirements while meeting the 100-year storm event planning criteria, even with 30% added in for climate change.” Storm water attenuation structures (box culverts and over-sized pipework) have been installed within the adoptable sewer network in order to accommodate the 30 year return period storm event.

Engineers took a pragmatic approach to designing surface water drainage at Taylor Wimpey’s new Parc-y-Strade housing development on the outskirts of Llanelli, South Wales. Using Hydro-Brake® vortex flow control technology to engineer distributed surface water storage and attenuation across the lowlying, flat site, the development infrastructure satisfies Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) principles.

The high-density development of 355 homes is situated in a coastal plain that could be prone to flooding. The consulting engineers QuadConsult Limited specified 29 Hydro-Brake® Flow Controls to control surface water and manage underground storage across the site. The area, on the western side of Llanelli town centre, is located near the River Loughor inlet with extensive coastal wetlands and could be threatened by flooding. As a result of the flat topography, drainage flow is a major concern. To help improve this, the whole site was built up by circa 900mm. Even so, the invert levels of the discharge points are three metres or more below development levels.

Consulting engineer Richard John of QuadConsult developed the detailed drainage solution for the development site: “It’s a typical coastal plain location with a high water table due to the tidal range and the estuary. Rainfall is about 1150 mm a year, peaking in winter, so an 8.7 hectare site with numerous access roads and impermeable areas will have a considerable amount of water to deal with,” he explains. “In such a high-density, flat site, with many hard surfaces, achieving the desired attenuation with a predominantly soft scheme using many ponds would have been difficult and would also have occupied valuable building land. In addition, maintenance and adoption of such features can pose a problem to the relevant authorities, who are happier with

A number of modular block storage tanks collect surface water from private roads, roofs and driveways. They are sized to accommodate rainfall events greater than the 30 year return period storm up-to-and-including the 100-year return period event (including an allowance for climate change) and are located under non-adoptable areas. The storage discharges to the adoptable sewer network via a total of 28 76 mm Hydro-Brake® Flow Controls with a maximum design flow of 3 l/s. The adoptable sewer network collects the surface water and conveys it to the adoptable attenuation structures for temporary storage where a Hydro-Brake® Optimum attenuates the final discharge to the receiving watercourse at a maximum 13.9 l/s/ha to meet the planning requirements.

POLYPIPE provides sustainable drainage solution for park and ride scheme Polypipe’s proven Permavoid geocellular sub-base replacement system has been installed at the recently opened Winnersh Triangle Park & Ride.

Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of sustainable drainage and water management products, provided the ideal stormwater attenuation solution for the new park and ride car parking facility, completed in partnership between Reading Borough Council and Wokingham Borough Council to create a sustainable mode of transport for commuters.

In addition, Polypipe worked with main contractor Dawnus to ensure that further structural loading calculations were carried out to define the on-site travel routes for the different surface laying machinery to allow surface works to be carried out without any detrimental effect to the Permavoid tank installations.

Polypipe worked with the project’s consultant engineer from the early design stage to assist with the initial solution for the new 390 space car park. The scheme incorporated 29 shallow Permavoid attenuation tanks with the capacity to store up to 590m³ of stormwater runoff from the car park.

Sean Robinson, Permavoid Project Manager at Polypipe said: “The Permavoid system is extremely flexible and can provide source control water management in very challenging ground conditions. Due to its inherent strength Permavoid is ideally suited to this project acting as a sub-base replacement system in very shallow applications.

The site’s geology consists of a high water table to cover level, which meant that an attenuation solution needed to be carefully considered. Due to its shallow installation, Permavoid proved to be the ideal solution as it could be installed above the water table. Working with the design team the tanks were strategically positioned to eliminate the need for the installation team, Keytec Environmental Ltd, to be working within the ground water zone.

The Permavoid high strength geocellular solution, incorporates a unique jointing mechanism that forms an interlocking ‘raft’ with exceptional strength that will support structural loads across the most heavily trafficked areas on the site. The surface finish consisted of both gravel and asphalt and Polypipe assisted the design team with structural and flotation calculations to ensure the minimum depth of sub-surface could be achieved while preventing the geocellular tanks from floating.

“With our wealth of experience on Permavoid projects, we are not just a supplier, we can provide design, and construction support and advice throughout the project.” Richard Tithecott, Project Manager at Dawnus Construction, said: “The team from Polypipe were a huge help on this project not only in selecting the right product, but assisting with the necessary structural loading calculations. “These calculations substantiated our belief that the specified Permavoid system was more than strong enough to cope with the loads likely to be placed on it, which was one of our primary considerations when selecting a shallow attenuation solution.”

Let's go surfing - in a 400-year-old culvert

Drainage engineers found a novel solution when a client needed to establish the condition of a centuries-old culvert - they went surfing. The team from the Lanes depot in Plymouth mounted a CCTV drainage survey camera on a surfboard and floated it through the culvert under an

Elizabethan building. Usually, they would have used one of Lanes Group's purposedesigned camera floats, which are designed to hold the drainage camera during pipe float-through surveys. However, in this case, all the float-through devices were being used, and the client needed the survey results by a set time - so some clever improvisation allowed the job to be completed. Lanes Plymouth Area Development Manager Grant Cooper said: "Since Devon and the South West is home of British surfing it seemed apt that we should use a surf board to carry out the float-through survey. "Of course, the water conditions in the culvert were not as exciting as a surfer would like, but they were perfect for us. Water flows in the culvert were slow, so the surf board remained perfectly stable throughout.” I enquiry 156

ROOFING, CLADDING & INSULATION home buyers with choice of colours for window frames and doors. Using colour roofline is a quick and cost effective design feature that brings a contemporary feel to any exterior façade. It’s a trend that has steadily grown all around the UK and is now used by many major housebuilders.

THE COLOUR REVOLUTION: HERE TO STAY Are you joining the colour revolution? I enquiry 563

The days when PVC building products were only available in white are rapidly disappearing. Freefoam statistics confirm this growing momentum across its roofline range for colour, particularly grey products. With combined sales of Storm Grey, Anthracite Grey and Dark Grey fascia up an amazing 77% year on year, window trims up over 100% and Freefoam’s Plastops pin and nail fixing range up 53% the grey revolution is on its way and here to stay. The shift in demand can be traced back over recent years as the economy began its journey out of recession and housebuilders started to look to differentiate their offering with kerbside appeal by providing

Freefoam stockist Willmotts of Reading has many years of experience working with this sector, George Petts commented “Willmotts have seen sales of coloured Roofline & Cladding products increase dramatically, particularly over the last 3 years, as the visual presentation of new houses becomes even more important. Style matters, and coloured roofline is now seen as the first statement of this style development witnessed by prospective purchasers. In our opinion, Freefoam have got it right. Their Colormax range is excellent, the quality of the colours, their performance, and the attention to detail of board sizes, trims and fixings, offers house-builders the best allround package of coloured PVC.”.

in colour roofline from the start and are delighted that our commitment to extending product range is delivering significant increase in business. It’s interesting to see how new build has influenced the replacement market. The future is always difficult to predict but we can only see colour, and particularly grey, becoming a larger proportion of total sales. Could this be the catalyst for the long overdue dawn of a new era in the replacement and refurbishment home improvement market as discerning homeowners choose to bring their home into the 21st century?”

Colin St John, Freefoam Commercial Director

As with many trends within the building industry, changes and new developments within the new build sector soon filter through to the renovation and refurbishment market. Colin St John, Commercial Director, summarised “We believed

New cream and white roofline colourways

from SWISH BUILDING PRODUCTS Roofline and rainwater specialists, Swish Building Products has introduced two new colourways to its extensive range of cellular PVC facia and soffit products.

The new colourways –foil wrapped Cream and Whitehave been developed in answer to increasing specification and trade demand for materials which co-ordinate with similar PVC door and window components used in housing new-build and refurbishment projects.

According to Swish, colour is becoming more popular and the two new shades will be produced in many of the traditional board sizes and profiles in their roofline range, as well as the usual joints and corner units required to complete an installation. Cellular PVC is widely used as a replacement for timber boarding because of its superior durability and maintenancefree characteristics. Swish cellular PVC is probably the most cost effective material for use at the roofline because it costs roughly the same as timber to install, requires no maintenance and so suits the exposed and inaccessible location at the eaves. Most importantly, especially from the point of view of landlords in both public and private sector, when it is installed correctly it will probably last the lifetime of the dwelling. I enquiry 562

With capacity for almost 4000 guests and 96% occupancy, keeping the central area of Center Parcs Longleat Forest open was key to the refurbishment of its impressive Subtropical Swimming Paradise. A massive challenge for Delomac Roofing, the project to renew the roof with a Sika Sarnafil membrane was accomplished with two years of meticulous planning and 30 months of onsite construction.

Originally completed in 1994, the Subtropical Swimming Paradise roof and glazed rain-screen systems were in need of refurbishment. The new roof installation was planned in close discussion with the Sika Sarnafil and Delomac supply chain, developing the specification to address all the client’s strict performance, environmental and aesthetic requirements. Chris Meadows, Technical Advisor, Sika Sarnafil explained: “The client needed a durable, long lasting roof system that would complement the woodland setting. This was complicated by differences between the swimming pool side and dry side, with restaurants and meeting rooms, of the building. “We proposed two distinct solutions– a mechanically fastened system using Sarnafil S327-18EL for the dry side and an adhered system using Sarnafil G410-18EL for the more humid area. Both were specified in Patina Green to blend with the natural environment. Sarnafil membranes are cold applied and free from naked flames, the obvious choice for an open site.”

Comprehensive vapour barrier measures were used on the pool side of the building to ensure the high humidity chlorinated environment was contained. Robust SFS sealant and Sarnafil metal-lined vapour barrier detailing at all Glulam beams and fascia interfaces ensured no risk of condensation. Sarnafil membrane and accessories were used for all the coverings, and again overall specification development was tailored to suit the varying build-ups; new, overlay, bonded and mechanically fastened. An increased thickness membrane was manufactured in one single batch to ensure colour consistency. Sika added further value with an impressive 17 visits to the site by the Applications Team to advice and support. Brendan McNulty, Delomac Roofing, described the challenges the team faced during the project: “Installation methods and curved roof areas required our operatives to work from

harness and rope access. We developed an innovative material loading trolley with the builder to deliver materials to the work sections safely, without compromising finishes. “Workmanship standards remained exceptionally high, despite the challenging logistics, and met the client requirement of consistent lap and detail arrangement. This was also helped by the quality of the Sarnafil membranes. The finished installation has transformed the internal and external appearance of the building. Rooflights and white soffit finished decking have provided a bright and airy environment, with the external green finish blending subtly with the landscape. “Most importantly, safe, unlimited guest access to the pool, restaurants and meeting areas was maintained throughout the entire project; something we’re very proud of.”

An innovative temporary terraced platform was designed and installed, suspended underneath the main structure by cables and lattice beam scaffold units. Work was carried out over 16 separate sections, like a wagon wheel – ensuring the structure was not compromised by uneven load distribution. This stepped, terraced temporary roof was then covered with plywood and completely weathered by Delomac with a Sarnafil membrane. With the temporary roof in place, existing glazing and coverings could be safely removed, maintaining watertightness with guests enjoying the facilities below. Scheduled over more than two years, this way of working resulted in a dry building envelope, despite some of the wettest weather on record. I enquiry 565

Building firms make the move to “all-inclusive” home improvement With competition in the home improvement sector becoming increasingly fierce, more firms are diversifying their product and service portfolio to take advantage of cross selling opportunities. The trend has accentuated over the past few years as an increasing number of roofers, builders, kitchen or double glazing companies, including major national brands, have expanded their operations to supply additional products. This is the result of an in-house analysis from full-service marketing agency for the construction and home improvement industry, Purplex.

“Savvy firms have started to make the move to ‘complete’ home improvement status a few years ago,” says Andrew Scott, Purplex MD Trend support Skill Build 2016 Trend has proudly supported Skill Build Judge and BBC Young Carpenter of the year, Tibby Singh during the 2016 regional heats across the UK.

The heats saw hundreds of students from across the UK take part in regional heats where they were set tasks to challenge and test their woodworking skills. Participants received goody bags and giveaways from Trend, including Trend T Shirts. Trend’s Head of Marketing, Luke Hulley adds, “Trend are really proud to support Skill Build. John Tigg who is a Trend employee gives up time each year to help judge and support the heats and the finals and this year is no different. I hope all attendees gained valuable experience from taking part and wish them the very best in their future careers”.

“Savvy firms have started to make the move to ‘complete’ home improvement status a few years ago,” says Andrew Scott, Purplex MD.

One such example is the wellestablished double glazing specialist, Everest. Aside from windows and doors, the company is now offering driveways, home security systems, flat roofs and even artificial grass. “It makes complete sense,” says Andrew. “A homeowner might contact a double glazing company for their windows, doors or conservatory, but often they require more building and renovation work. Companies who

have spotted the opportunity derived from this type of ‘integrated demand’ were quick to capitalise on it, and are now hugely benefiting. “It’s important that manufacturers, distributors and merchants recognise that their traditional customer base is changing and there are new customers and opportunities across the building and wider home improvement sector” concluded Andrew.

“We have seen this happening both with our own clients, as well as the wider market following research we have carried out.
