The city centre of Lahti, Finland, has been transformed by the consistent application of Nordic Standard copper from Aurubis to unify normally utilitarian elements such as bus shelters, lift and stair enclosures – and even a road under-pass.

Enhancing The Public Realm Designed by Helsinki based JKMM Architects (www.jkmm.fi), a new transport hub in front of the historic railway station links the rail network to both long-distance and local bus lines. It consists of a 60-metre long canopy for the bus terminal, enclosed lift and stair structures, local bus stops on the street and supporting landscape elements. There is also an 80-metre long tunnel beneath the centre. These

disparate elements on different levels are united within the complex city environment by their high-quality materials, including Nordic Standard copper in different forms. Straddling the new deck over the street below is the new terminal for intercity buses with a dramatic canopy and pillars clad in perforated copper. Next to it is a delicate and airy glass elevator tower with the shaft covered in copper sheet and copper wire mesh, an elegant counterpart to the powerful silhouette of the canopy. This and two other elevator towers, also made of glass and copper, connect the lower level street to the bus stop shelters on the street above. Lighting is placed behind perforated copper parts in various elements and will enhance the character of the place during the long dark winters. The side-walls, parapet and face of the underpass are all copper-clad, creating an impressive copper portal.

Nordic Standard is produced by Aurubis, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler. In addition to Nordic Standard, other Aurubis architectural surfaces include Nordic Brown preoxidised copper with either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment. Various Nordic Green and Nordic Blue factory-applied patinas have also been developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. Aurubis copper alloys include Nordic Brass – now also available preweathered – Nordic Bronze and the innovative Nordic Royal with a longlasting golden colour. The Sunderland community now has access to an exceptional leisure facility with curtain walling from Reynaers, a leading provider of aluminium glazing systems.

Washington Leisure Centre builds community connections with Reynaers performance requirements. Washington Leisure Centre also uses CW 50-SC, the structurally clamped variant.

Putting leisure at the heart of the community, the centre underwent an £11 million development and was rebuilt to encourage participation in a comprehensive range of indoor and outdoor activities.

Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager at Reynaers, said: “The Reynaers product range is built with the end-user in mind, and the Washington Leisure Centre brings a wealth of opportunity and benefits to the Sunderland community. The use of large panels is perfect for this contemporary build and floods the leisure centre with light, allowing maximised natural light and green views for physical and mental wellbeing.”

Washington Leisure Centre’s offering now includes pools and flumes, a health suite with a sauna and steam rooms, a wellness centre, a soft play area across two levels as well as outdoor floodlit synthetic football pitches. It also boasts a multi-purpose sports hall that can accommodate trampoline training to an international standard. Thoughtfully positioned glazed areas from Reynaers enhance connectivity between these internal and external spaces whilst maintaining privacy for visitors. The overall approach to the architecture is ‘soft’, with architects Watson Batty utilising a combination of timber and insulated composite cladding panels, with sedum roofing to knit the building into its green

surroundings of Princess Anne Park. The Reynaers systems incorporated into this approach are Vision 50 doors as well as two types of curtain walling. Vision 50 is a non-insulated flush door system offering solutions for high-traffic, ground-floor areas. The system provides the ideal combination of premium

performance and ease of production, and safety can be maximised with antifinger traps for added safety. Offering unlimited design freedom and maximum transparency, CW 50 is a curtain walling system available in several aesthetic, technical and glazing variants to comply with all visual and

The digital model also provides information to support the construction and operation of a building throughout its entire lifecycle. In addition, to a 3D graphic representation, the “smart” object also includes important technical data for DELABIE’s core products. DELABIE’s BIM files can be downloaded via the relevant product data sheet or by using the Datashare facility. This file sharing centre makes it possible to download all the documents relating to a particular product at the same time, such as product sheets, technical descriptions, photos, line drawings, AutoCAD files, installation guides and approval certificates. There is no need to register to access the files. Creating a personalised catalogue is also very easy on the new DELABIE website. Users can select products, a process made simple by large thumbnails and short descriptions which allow quick product comparisons. These are then automatically formatted into a tailor-made digital catalogue which can be exported in Excel, WORD or PDF format. Taking its cues from the technical catalogues, the delabie.co.uk website, incorporating BIM files and Datashare is an efficient and intuitive tool for architects, installers, consultants and plumbing merchants. Pendock facilitates calm environment at Ipswich Oncology Day Unit Pendock, the UK’s leading encasement specialist, has supplied 14 column casings for the refurbishment of the Oncology Day Unit at Ipswich Hospital. This is on the back of a successful scheme undertaken at Ashford Hospital, for whom the British company manufactured similar installations. For the oncology unit refurbishment, though, a variety of column shapes have been specified; some have been tailored to fit around partition walls, while one even finishes on a top of a desk in this attractive and unusual redevelopment. Happily creating bespoke column casings is a routine exercise for Pendock, being that the company provides a full site survey, design and installation package – if needed - to ensure projects are well managed from start to finish. Kier was the main contractor for the Ipswich day unit refurbishment and it specified a selection of semicircular and quadrant form enclosures for the scheme. Raymond Brown Construction Ltd has started to install 119 new concrete beach huts at Milford on Sea. Infrastructure works include a concrete promenade slab, access ramps and steps, and pedestrian walk-way surfacing. These replace the masonry beach huts that were destroyed in a Valentine's Day storm in 2014. Winn & Coales widely used Densostrip sealant was recommended to Raymond Brown Construction by Merchant Suppliers, Resapol of Southampton. Densostrip is a compound rubber and bitumen joint sealing strip for precast concrete units to provide a permanently flexible watertight seal when compressed between joint faces previously primed with Densostrip primer. It is ideal for creating costeffective, bespoke, versatile units and walls for any space, and is superstrong. And flexible CaberWood MDF Pro can be used throughout. It is ideal for most high quality paint and surface finishes including the application of paper foils and veneers to suit individual tastes.

An award winning Cheshire property has been refurbished using Render Systems from Alumasc. Owned by David and Margie Edwards, the magnificent Bankhall House was originally completed in 2008, to a traditional Georgian/Queen Ann architectural design, earning them the prestigious title of Daily Telegraph Best Traditional House in the UK for 2010. Following some initial problems with the original render system, David Edwards embarked on a 4-month study of the render market, in search of a system that would complement and protect his beloved Bankhall.

Following rigorous research into suitable products and approved contractors, David brought in Alumasc Registered Installer Bruce Day of Cheshire Facades, who, according to David, “worked alongside Alumasc’s technical team to show passion above and beyond that of their competitors”. David, Bruce, and the installation team, worked closely together in the investigation and resolution of the initial render problems, and specified Alumasc’s MR Polymer Render System with a decorative Silicone Render finish, as the solution. www.alumascfacades.co.uk

Altro Resins break new ground on North Herts College New Campus Altro resin flooring is providing the ultimate in colour, flexibility and durability on an awardwinning, £10 million refurbished campus at North Hertfordshire College, in Hitchin.

Web: www.altro.co.uk

Altro FlexiflowTM and Altro MultiScreedTM EP Naturals have been used within the multi-functional hub space on the new campus, which links three teaching buildings. The awardwinning design for the new campus was created by international design practice Scott Brownrigg. Associate Clark Barton explains how Altro resins played a part in his vision: “The new campus is open plan, bright, colourful, modern yet functional, and it was vital that the flooring should reflect and complement this. We specified Altro resins for the college hub because these products offer the range of colours and textures to enable us to be innovative and flexible in our design. In addition, it was imperative that the flooring was high performance and practical, and Altro’s credentials offer this. The entire project was very much

a collaborative effort,” added Clark. “We worked closely with Altro, the main contractor, the college, and also the students, who were instrumental in choosing colours and themes.” Altro Flexiflow resin flooring was one of the key products in the specification, as Clark explained. “We chose this flooring for the ground floor hub, and leading into each of the other three buildings, because we wanted a seamless, solid, practical surface. It was also paramount that the flooring in this area was flexible enough to move with the building without cracking. Altro Flexiflow is tough enough to handle high impact areas, yet be flexible enough to move with a building. It gives a uniform and seamless finish with uninterrupted lines, and is self-levelling, which makes installation easy. With 28 colour options

it’s flexible enough to fit into any design vision. On the upper floor of the college hub, Clark and his team chose another resin flooring — Altro MultiScreed EP Naturals, in White Yorkstone. “This flooring works very well in contrast with the smooth texture of the Altro Flexiflow. It’s also a tough, practical flooring that’s easy to clean.” Altro Multiscreed EP Naturals is a tough surface that can handle the hardest bumps and knocks. A solvent-free epoxy resin system, it has a natural appearance with nine colours evoking tones of concrete and stone. The product has improved performance and produces a high strength floor with exceptional abrasion and chemical resistance. With a nominal thickness of 4mm, it can be coved and laid to falls. Europe’s “highest" terrace renovation - at 2,608 meters A logistical challenge at 2,608 meters above sea level, the sun terrace of Baden Lodge in the East Tyrolean Alps, Austria was renovated with all materials brought to their destination by helicopter due to the hut only being accessible on foot.

In order to save transportation costs for future renovations, the owner of the chalet – the Austrian Alpine Association – looked for a solution that would provide maximum safety against damage due to extreme weather conditions in the mountains where temperatures range from -20°C in the winter to 35°C in the summer. They found it in Gutjahr System Technology, now available from BAL, utilising the AquaDrain EK drainage mat as the substructure. From the sun terrace of the Baden chalet, climbers enjoy panoramic views of the Alps - and since summer 2008 they have enjoyed these spectacular views from beautifully restored natural stone flooring. Because strong sunlight, large amounts of rain, snow and ice had greatly damaged the old stone, the owners wanted to protect the newly installed polygonal porphyry stone against this damage. Thanks to the capillary breaking AquaDrain EK drainage mat, the installation will be free from permanent damage for years to come.

To find out more and request a demo visit from our Specification Support Team go to: http://www.bal-adhesives.com/specifiers/specifiers-external-tiling-solutions/

The system has been specifically designed for the safe installation of natural stone and allows for drainage through drainage mortar. It prevents moisture storage in the substructure, with surface water running through to the drainage channels and away from the assembly. As a result, the drainage property of the overall construction improved by up to 20 times. The natural stone surface can also dry faster because the construction is ventilated. AquaDrain EK is the only product on the market with a special mesh fabric that has a long-term limit state and thus remains permanently water permeable. This is unlike

drainage mats with geotextile felts which are limited in their function, due to being clogged and blocked by soluble limestone deposits. About The Baden Lodge The Baden Lodge is a high alpine shelter, owned by the Austrian Alpine Association, Baden Section. It lies in the Frosnitztal Valley near Matrei which is part of the Venediger mountain group in the East Tyrolean Alps. The hut was initially built on a trial basis in 1910 in Mödling, Vienna before being dismantled and transported to Matrei where it was reconstructed in 1911 before being expanded and renovated in 1959, 1986 and 1996. The Baden Lodge offers 41 mountaineering and 15 camp beds. Gutjahr System Technology from BAL Gutjahr System Technology from BAL represents drainage, ventilating and uncoupling solutions for balconies, patios, terraces and on facades and interiors. Its innovative technology helps protect external installation from frost damage, staining and water damage. Now available to order, Gutjahr system technology represents a breakthrough in the UK market for simple, safe and strong solutions for outdoor tiling installations and provides a complete system for all products required for external tiling, from market-leaders BAL. BAL has introducing a number of Gutjahr products to its portfolio including waterproofing, drainage matting, mortar, drain grates, edging profiles and guttering, which combined with its full range of tiles adhesives, grouts and sealants, makes BAL the ONLY full system provider in the UK. DuPont™ Corian® shapes the futuristic new headquarters of Irizar Grupo It is hard to imagine a more fitting material than DuPont™ Corian to shape the new headquarters of a company based on two fundamental principles: technological innovation and a futuristic vision. It is precisely this idea that the Irizar Group –a world leading bus and coach manufacturer with 125 years of experience – wanted to convey when renovating its headquarters and showroom in Guipuzcoa. Using this advanced performance techno-surface, the company has achieved its key objective. Most of the facility’s furniture and interior wall cladding have been shaped in Corian® Glacier White, with the intricate design conceived exclusively for the client and the entire installation produced in the Dab Leioa workshop.

From the reception desk and its back panelling, to all the interior wall cladding, as well as the displays, furniture, columns, counters and meeting rooms – every element has been manufactured in DuPont™ Corian®. On the second floor, a contemporary and innovative 1,200 square metre space houses the client’s reception and coach definition and brand experience areas. The showroom includes physical and virtual displays of all the upholstery and lining options offered by the Group which enable bespoke coach designs to be developed for each client. To meet the needs of each area of the headquarters, Dab Leioa workshop has used many different moulds and about 120 6mm sheets of DuPont™ Corian®. Much-needed and highly complex, the new design needed to incorporate a variety of different elements while ensuring a unified space. The thermoforming ability of the material, as well as its high performance in terms of strength, durability and maintenance, were the key factors that led the project leaders to choose Corian®. Project coordinator Txema Otero Villanueva says that the selection of DuPont™ Corian® was due to “the versatility of the material to achieve any kind of shape – however complex – and to its final finishing that allows us to convey a feeling of high quality and

design within each one of the elements that form the showroom. Thanks to its combination of functional and aesthetic qualities, Corian® not only withstands the normal wear and tear of this type of environment, but also enables the minimalist, futuristic design that the space calls for to be realised. Otero continues, “What we like the most is the final finishing of the material and how it withstands the test of time as well as its maintenance and neatness. Had we chosen another type of solution, after a while, we would have had to do some kind of maintenance. Instead, with DuPont™ Corian®, the premises remain like the first opening day”. “The two other advantages that DuPont™ Corian® has provided us with are its fast execution ability and its flexibility to adapt to changes that occurred during the assembly process”, concludes the project manager. Ultimately, the design of the Group’s new building aims to welcome visitors and convey an image of an up-to-date and strong brand which is in constant evolution – a place where technology and the future play an important role. The curving, sinuous shapes designed using DuPont™ Corian® create a cuttingedge, dynamic atmosphere which inspires a feeling

of moving forward – always looking towards what is yet to come. Through the clean and precise pieces that have been conceived in this material, every element of the design is reminiscent of roads, which create an enveloping and deliberate rhythm in any landscape. About DuPont™ Corian® - First created as a high performance material for kitchen and bathroom worktops, DuPont™ Corian® is now - thanks to its unique combination of functionality, versatility and beauty - a leading global brand among surfacing materials for solid surface into an exceptional design tool for every application you can imagine. Kitchens, bathrooms, lighting, furnishing, facades, seating, radiators, home automation, touch control surfaces: today, DuPont™ Corian® can be found almost everywhere in commercial, residential and public space environments. Steel enamel washbasins were the key feature

Hundreds of buildings now benefiting from Dolphin Excel Range

Kaldewei’s new washbasins made of steel enamel were a key feature at Sleep this year. Already a well established brand for baths and shower trays/surfaces, the introduction of this new segment, means bathrooms can now be fitted out using a single material, a harmonious design vocabulary and a matching colour scheme. The Silenio washbasin by Anke Salomon is distinguished by exceptionally soft interior lines. Flowing gently inwards from both sides, the lines open out into a soft hollow which contrasts with the rear section of the basin which falls steeply. The spacious surround offers plenty of room for fittings and accessories. KALDEWEI

Dolphin Solutions’ recently launched Excel range is now proudly featured in over 400 washrooms throughout the UK thanks to its intelligent design and functional elegance. Working closely with Architects and Specifiers, Dolphin understands the importance of washroom products that will stand the test of time whilst also looking stylish. The Excel range has been developed with customer feedback and collaboration in mind. Virtually every paper towel and toilet roll configuration in Europe has been considered to

ensure a great design that is really functional for its users. Chris Beattie, Sales & Marketing Director at Dolphin Solutions, comments: “We are delighted that the Excel range has been received so positively. As soon as we explain the benefits of the collection to our clients, they are very keen to incorporate it in their washroom projects.” “The Excel range offers a great marketing opportunity. The fact that the

dispensers are manufactured onsite at our UK headquarters means that we can personalise the range with client branding which adds that special touch required to offer something really unique to our customers.” The Excel range is ideal for high traffic environments given its tough ABS construction. Whilst this makes the dispensers durable and vandal resistant, they are a pleasure for cleaning staff to replenish and look stylish due to the high quality design too. Companies can choose from a variety of antibacterial gels, hand sanitisers and foaming or liquid soaps. This ground breaking system, leads the way by offering a 50mm stick system with the capability to span further as the mullions and transoms have the highest Ix and Iy values on the market today. The design is also in keeping with the hotels minimalist Japanese Interior

which echoes the “Byoba” art of Japanese screens. The cladding to the façade below the Rofuto Sky Bar was a palette of Ruukki panels, polished stone rain screen, and Kingspan Benchmark, A. Comar’s interface range of adaptors allowed the Comar 5Pi Advanced Windows to seamlessly integrate with the differing cladding elements. The design detailing of all these elements ensured that the façade had no thermal bridging and will maintain it’s air and water-tight solution. Moving to the base of the building, Comar 6EFT capped curtain walling was used.

Comar 6EFT interfaces with the dramatic angled cantilevered entrances. For this element of the face design the detailing and installation had to be precise to ensure that drainage and seals create a futureproof water tight solution. Integrated into the curtain wall the entrances have to provide both a statement of welcome and ensure uninterrupted access. Often the first experience of a hotel is the entrance, which needs to provide form as well as function. The Comar 7P.i Commercial Door system is one of the most comprehensive on the market today. Sections are robust and offer an ideal solution for high traffic entrances. The doors selected were auto sliding which allow uninterrupted passage into the double storey entrance lobby. Universal Trade Frames supplies vertical sliders for heritage cottage The Vertical Slider window system from Spectus Window Systems has been used in a major Welsh coastal cottage renovation project. Supplied by trade fabricator and by Spectus customer, Universal Trade Frames Ltd (UTFL), the project included ten vertical slider windows in Chartwell Green, as UTFL Director Brian Kruger explains. “The authentic looking Spectus Vertical Slider system was a natural choice in every way. The new windows replaced old, draughty, hardwood vertical sliders, and due to the property’s seafront position, weather resistance was a big part of the homeowner’s requirements. Draught-free VS windows are one of the most energy efficient on the market.” Recognised as an industry leader not only in its authentic looks, but also its performance and versatility, the Spectus VS window can achieve BFRC ‘A’ Rating, and even up to a maximum ‘A++’ where circumstances require. “Thermal properties are enhanced through the use of 24mm double glazed units as standard, and an already excellent weather performance is increased with a pile seal detail on the sash edges and outer frames.” Web: www.spectus.co.uk Enquiry No. 234 www.mclink.co.uk/949-234

Professional approval for the Jigtech Door Handle Fitting System Since taking the industry by storm with the latest innovation in door handle fitting, Dale Hardware wanted to find out exactly how their customers were benefitting from using the Jigtech Pro fitting system. With over 20 years of experience in the trade, Tony Walker of Tony Walker Construction was keen to test out Jigtech whilst working on a variety of

new builds, large extensions and refurbishments in the Sheffield region. Before being introduced to Jigtech, Tony and his team were fitting door handle systems using a standard tubular latch and keep plate with square face – a method that could take up to 25 minutes per door. Although this is a professional standard, to which most tradespeople are used to, the method meant fitting times were lengthy and the amount of different tools needed for the job meant it was inconvenient for workers to move between fittings. Since moving to the Jigtech system, the team can now fit a door handle system in five minutes with the use of an easy and precise method. Tony adds, “There is time to be saved on each aspect of the job and the use of a complete kit means my team only need a drill and hammer to fit each door handle set.” He continues to say, “The Jigtech handle bolts within the kit allow for easy fitting and they require no re-drilling.

The use of the latch locator also means we can save time adjusting the keep.” Tony Walker Construction is now able to fit up to 20 more doors in a week, which equates to around two more houses each week– improving profitability for the developer and Tony. The main question many potential customers have is whether the quality of the fitting is compromised as a result of the reduced fitting time, however Tony noted that the quality of finish is faultless and the Jigtech ensures a professional standard every time. Jigtech also has a range of door furniture that Tony is particularly

impressed with – an opinion shared by his clients who are delighted with the finish of the plates. Tony adds, “My clients have all been exceptionally pleased with Jigtech’s range of door furniture which covers a variety of modern and popular styles. Energy efficiency in a very small home – for the future The latest development of the Cube Project - QB3 has appeared on Channel 4 television in George Clarke’s Amazing spaces. With its NorDan passivhaus standard windows, the building was designed by Dr Mike Page of the University of Hertfordshire.

QB3, is a simple building, on one level. Its only 18m² which is highly energy efficient, with its NorDan Passivhaus standard triple glazed windows, air source heat pumps, moving walls and everything else you would expect in such an incredible building. Dr Mike Page, director of Cube Project, is Reader in Psychology, and Head of Research Centre in Psychology and Sport Sciences at University of Hertfordshire. He says: “ QB3, is a development of an idea that we first explored in a building for Channel 4’s Gadget Man. We originally set out to build a home with an internal size no bigger than 4 x 3 x 3 metres, in which 2 people could live a comfortable modern existence, with

a minimum impact on the environment. This was the original “Cube”. It took up a smaller footprint and was easily transported and built on site. QB3 can be supplied with solar photovoltaic panels and a green roof, which would make it energy neutral over a one year period.” The post and beam structure has been developed jointly with Bolton Buildings who also supply the QB3. The outer structure can be assembled and water tight within four hours, with the rest – inner / outer walls, windows, doors, insulation, electrics going up to completion within 3 – 4 days. The building is easily transported by road and sited. It is appropriate for

wherever a static caravan would be permitted. Dr Mike Page, the designer and developer of this innovative building says:” this construction is ideal for boomerang kids, for use as a holiday home, emergency accommodation or for workers located remotely for a job.” NorDan supplied triple glazed top swing timber window and a 3 handled “Stormguard” picture window with thermally broken frame to increase energy efficiency, along with the glazed entrance door. Inside the building has a full size bed, energy efficient kitchen with induction hob, A+++fridge and moveable walls which enable the maximum use of the space. The kitchen wall can be “wound” back

to access the washing machine and shower area, and the bedroom shelving can also be easily moved to create more space in the bedroom. The moveable walls were developed by Europes leading storage system company, Bruynzeel, who develop and manufacture traditional storage systems used in university libraries and museums for archives. Heating is provided by two air source heat pumps, one set in the hot water tank. QB3 was featured at this year’s Edinburgh Science Festival in St Andrews Square. Slamming doors, damage to walls and furniture and trapped fingers could be a thing of the past with the introduction of GEZEs ActiveStop – a new control mechanism for internal swing doors. It’s a sleek, recessed door control – measuring only 28 mm wide incorporating a draw-in damper – which can be seamlessly integrated into swing doors making them quiet, smooth and easy to operate. GEZE ActiveStop has a gentle stopping action which breaks the swing of the door and stops it in a desired position. New Timber doors put Hörmann at the heart of the home Leading manufacturer, Hörmann, is launching a brand new range of internal timber doors, designed to transform a house into a home. Internal wooden doors have become one of the top trends of 2016, but Hörmann’s quality timber products are unrivalled when it comes to creating a timeless, elegant look that adds character to the property. Whether classic or modern, white lacquer or beech, with glass elements or stainless steel embellishments, the doors come with a range of options to suit all furnishings. Available with four different door leaf inserts, from a simple honeycomb to a high quality solid chipboard, the timber doors offer real choice when it comes to design specification. Timber frames come with an extra sturdy 25mm-thick jamb lining, while steel frames have a special coating to maximize endurance and ensure that they really are a “door for life”. Hörmann’s UK Marketing Manager, David O’Mara, says: “Internal timber doors are hugely popular at the moment. The trend for textures, such as fabric wallpaper, has extended to doors and we’re seeing a surge in demand for internal timber products which feel as luxurious as they look.”

Hörmann’s internal timber doors have finely textured surfaces which allow homeowners to feel what they see; the wood grain is embossed onto the door leaf, making the characteristic wooden structure of the Duradecor surface tangible. The surface also offers maximum impact resistance as well as heat resistance. The timber range includes apartment entrance doors for those who wish to match their home inside and out. These products are rated climatic class 3, as they help to retain heat, and acoustic rating category II to keep noise out. Optional security equipment is also available to maximize safety. Whatever your design challenge, Hörmann has the products, expertise and knowledge to deliver the perfect style of door, whatever the budget. Let Laidlaw take the strain – Nylon Line handrails are the perfect fit A railway station in Essex is looking brighter and fresher after Laidlaw, the trusted architectural hardware supplier, installed its market-leading Nylon Line handrails. It was asked to supply more than 180 linear metres of its premium 40mm nylon handrails for the bridge and stairs that connect the two platforms at Great Bentley Station, near Colchester. This range is one of the most effective ways for organisations to comply with guidance in Approved Document M and BS8300 because its 4mm thick polyamide sleeve has a low thermal conductivity and is 68 times warmer to touch than stainless steel and 950 times warmer than aluminium. Hart & Co supplies fire windows to Salix Homes Hart & Co, the Lancashire based fire window specialist, has worked with Salix Homes to supply PVC-U fire rated windows for nearly 60 flats across its Salford housing stock. An independent fire risk assessment carried out for the social housing provider had identified specific flats opening onto communal areas which required a fire rated window as well as a fire rated door in order to comply with the relevant codes of practice under the Fire Safety Reform Order 2005. Salix Homes turned to Hart & Co for a solution. The REHAU accredited fabricator was able to design and manufacture fixed pane, fire rated windows using the REHAU RAUFERNO system, providing a cost effective, low maintenance and attractive alternative to conventional frames in timber or steel.

The REHAU RAUFERNO windows from Hart & Co use the market leading REHAU TOTAL70 PVC-U profile system with an intumescent strip within the specially reinforced frame. This strip expands with heat to offer at least a 30minute fire rating, complying with the requirements of BS476 Pts 20 and 22. For the Salix Homes properties, largely located across the Beechfarm estate in the Swinton area of Salford, Greater Manchester, Hart & Co fabricated windows up to 2m wide using separate 1m square fixed light frames joined with an expansion coupler. These replicated the look of the windows with opening lights which had been in place previously. They are double glazed with 4mm float glass on the inside of the sealed unit and pyroshield wired glass on the outside.

Hart & Co, based in Skelmersdale, has been fully accredited by REHAU to manufacture the RAUFERNO system, having undergone certified REHAU training. It has a specialist division producing the fire windows (www.firewindows.co.uk) enabling it to respond quickly to the Salix Homes order.

Millbrook Tower Stands Tall Following Replacement of Rainwater Drainage Stacks One of the tallest buildings in Southampton has had a complete drainage solution designed and installed without the temporary re-homing of any residents.

Formerly the tallest building in Southampton, the Millbrook Tower stands at 240 feet. Built over 50 years ago, the building had a cast iron drainage system installed that had started to rust and fail, causing excessive leaking in the 144 flats in the development.

January 2016, eight members of the Direct Labour Organisation (DLO) department of SCC came to Polypipe Terrain’s Centre of Excellence in Aylesford for training to gain a better understanding of the specification, assembly and installation of plastic fabricated drainage stacks.

Southampton City Council (SCC) who wanted a complete holistic approach to the design, manufacture and installation of the replacement drainage system, approached Polypipe. In

Working with SCC, as experts in providing intelligently engineered solutions for the movement of water and air around tall buildings, Polypipe Terrain assessed the failing drainage stacks in Millbrook Tower, and designed a new high-density polyethylene system. Terrain FUZE HDPE was installed due to a number of its key benefits over other more traditional materials. Lighter in weight than cast iron, Terrain FUZE HDPE can feature longer pipe runs, so less jointing is required. As the

Enquiry No.249 www.mclink.co.uk/949-249

system is jointed using electrofusion welding, where the weld area is as strong as the host material, the system integrity is increased and consequently the risk of leaks in the development is dramatically reduced. Due to the inherent material characteristics, Terrain FUZE HDPE lends itself to fabrication. Utilising Polypipe’s unique Terrain Fabrication Service, the system was fabricated to exact specification and delivered to the site, where Southampton’s DLO were able to complete the installation work across the 144 properties 40% faster than the average for such works. This meant that the residents of Millbrook Tower were able to remain in their properties, a key consideration when designing the drainage stacks of the building.

MSPS creates 'masterpiece' in canopy design for Merseyrail's Waterloo Station The station owners, Merseyrail, wanted an attractive canopy that was sympathetic with the environment and includes original artwork by the worldrenowned sculptor, Sir Antony Gormley OBE. The station is also the gateway to Crosby beach, featuring Sir Antony’s master work ‘Another Place’.

Morgan Sindall Professional Services (MSPS), the multi-disciplinary design and engineering consultancy, used the inspiration of a local artist to create a new canopy to shelter passengers from the elements and improve access to and from the platforms at the historic Waterloo (Merseyside) railway station.

Peter Day, director of rail for MSPS says: “The previous design comprised a large central glazed Macemain type shelter structure on the island platform. The client wanted a new solution that was more inspiring and more in keeping with the modern art that is a key feature of the interior design. Our new design is both practical and contemporary, giving the shelter that passengers need in a style that is sensitive to its environment.”

Opened in 1848, Waterloo became part of the Merseyrail network's Northern Line in 1978. The station was refurbished in 2011 and announced plans for a £3.7 million improvement programme in 2014. The latest programme of works also includes modifications to platform surface drainage and lighting as well as customer information signs, CCTV and PA systems.

MSPS designed a solution that combined modernity with practicality, fusing cladding with glazing to create cantilevered canopies over the platforms, waiting areas, and access routes between platforms and the existing stairs. A section of the covered area has also been enclosed to provide a heated waiting room.

Xtract™ - the eco-friendly way to remove Japanese knotweed Japanese knotweed is a highly invasive non-native plant that is spreading throughout the UK at an alarming rate. Introduced to the UK in the 1850’s, knotweed causes structural damage to buildings, adds significant time delays to development sites and can prevent the sale of land. When the ground is going to be disturbed for a development, it is crucial the knotweed is physically removed quickly and efficiently to allow the works to continue hassle free. The traditional Dig & Dump method of removing Japanese knotweed is now referred to by the Environment Agency as ‘the method of last resort’. Other eco-innovative alternatives exist, such as Xtract™. Concerned about the environmental impacts of Dig & Dump, Environet UK, one of the longest established Japanese knotweed removal specialists, developed the Xtract™ method to rapidly remove

knotweed in an eco-friendly way. The Xtract™ process screens the infested soil to remove all of the viable rhizomes, allowing the clean soil to be re-used on site. This reduces haulage and waste to landfill, causes less disruption than Dig & Dump and uses no chemicals. Typically half the cost of Dig & Dump, not only is Xtract™ beneficial to the environment, it is crucial to keeping costs down on developments. It is advisable for any treatment or removal work on Japanese knotweed to be guaranteed, as this is often a requirement of lending institutions. Make sure that whoever carries out the work is able to provide full evidence of their removal plan together with an insurance backed guarantee. The eradication work that Environet carries out is fully guaranteed and underwritten by ‘A’ rated Lloyd’s, providing the highest level of security.

Since its launch in 2008, Xtract™ has been used by major builders and developers on sites across the UK. For further information, please visit www.environetuk.com or call 01932 868 700

36 EXTERNAL WORKS, LANDSCAPING & DRAINAGE Q: How can I prevent mold on my deck?

How to Protect your Deck over the Winter Months – Ask the Experts Q: How do I ensure my deck doesn’t crack or splinter from the extreme weather? A: Extreme changes in weather can speed up splintering of deck boards. To ensure that next year’s outdoor fun is ouch-free, fix splintering boards on a wood deck before winter’s arrival. The amount of time and effort required to make repairs will depend on the extent of the damage. Lightly splintered boards may be salvaged through sanding, while severely splintered planks will continue to deteriorate and most likely will need to be replaced. For a splinter-free deck, wood-alternative decking like Trex is composed of a highly durable material that offers the natural beauty of wood without the rotting and splintering.

The Port of Bristol is a major deep water port with the harbour and its operations designed to routinely accept large cargo Capesize vessels of up to 130,000 DWT (Dead Weight Tonnage) With over £330m invested by First Corporate Shipping Limited in the dock estate in recent years the Port is now recognised as being one of the most productive and technically advanced in Europe.

A: Mold and mildew are enemies of any exterior surface – especially shady decks exposed to pollen or other organic debris and standing puddles of water. Never let snow or ice accumulate on your deck for lengthy periods of time. Sweeping the surface creates a first line of defense against mold and mildew and prevents the creation of an environment that nurtures the growth of fungus. For stubborn piles of snow or ice, use calcium chloride or rock salt, available in many home centres, to speed melting.

Low cost solution to slippery decking Wooden decking can become hazardous in damp and slippery conditions, creating the possible threat of a slips or falls for anyone walking across the surface. Outside areas where people gather need to be made safe to comply with health and safety issues. FibreGrid has come up with a solution to this problem with the development of Anti Slip Standard GRP Decking Strips, part of their affordable GRP SlipGrip® Standard range. Timber decking becomes safer with these quick and easy to install DeckGrip Strips, which come supplied with decking screws and are pre-drilled Available in lengths of 1200mm and 2400mm and widths of 50mm and 90mm, these decking strips are ideal for most decking areas and walkways. They are designed with a chamfered edge to provide additional safety which reduces any possibility of trips and falls. Unlike other products, no glue is required to install the product. From an aesthetics view point, given the choice of widths available, DeckGrip Strips are able to compliment existing decking areas by making a feature of the Strips against the timber substrate. Q: How can I protect my decking from getting scuffed and scratched? A: Scuffs and abrasions accumulated during the summer from furniture or foot traffic can mar the beauty of any deck’s surface. Before the first snow falls, it’s important to wash, stain and seal wood decks – a process that can take several days and may require the use of heavy equipment like a power washer. For a low-maintenance option, consider a wood-alternative deck such as Trex, which features a finish that resists stains, scratches and mold and requires no sanding, staining or sealing. FASERFIX® SUPER channel runs drain quayside at Royal Portbury Dock, Port of Bristol

578 metres of Hauraton FASERFIX® SUPER 150, channels have been installed along the redeveloped quayside and container handling area at the Royal Portbury Dock, Port of Bristol. Cat Jones, Hauraton’s South West Area Projects Manager outlines the features and benefits of FASERFIX® SUPER channels that made them ideal for the Royal Portbury Dock project; “Hauraton have for the last 50 years been at the forefront of manufacturing robust Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC) surface water drainage systems that are today distributed and installed around the world in some of the harshest environments. The FRC perfected by the company in the mid 70’s allows our FASERFIX® channels and trash boxes to have much thinner walls yet are very much stronger when compared with similar non-reinforced concrete products. A standard feature of FASERFIX® SUPER channels

are galvanised steel pressings securely moulded on to the top edges of the channel during production, this detail allied with the Class F900 ductile iron gratings supplied for the Portbury Dock project, provides exceptional wear resistance and increased load bearing capability. Unlike some other well known makes, our FASERFIX® components are so strong, even prior to installation they are able to endure the rigours of site work and then the twisting wheels of container handling vehicles’ once installed”. ’Aluprof Keeps it Safe’ by Wojciech Brozyna - MD of Aluprof UK At Aluprof we have recently supplied an enhanced version of our MBSR50N curtain wall system on a new medium secure mental health unit at St Bernard’s Hospital, London. Known as the ‘Three Bridges Medium Secure Unit’, the project was specified using Aluprof systems, with fabrication and installation undertaken by Britplas.

The main challenge of this design was security of the north and west elevations. It is normal practice to construct a high secure perimeter fence around medium secure units, but in this case it was not possible. The location of nearby hospital building meant that

the north and west elevations were adjacent to a car park and other spaces which were publicly accessible, so a secure fence was not practicable. To create a secure perimeter for the new development, the security needed to be built within the building envelope, and specifically the curtain walling system itself. Initial draft specifications called for the curtain wall to be made from steel and the glazing supplied to a ballistic level. Working closely with our experienced customer, Britplas, we already had experience of such requirements on previous projects in Europe and so specified the additional use of stainless steel plates within the construction, complete with a revised layout of fixing arrangements for the pressure plates of the curtain wall. The resulting enhanced construction was completed with powder coated aluminium cappings thereby offering a neat external curtain wall appearance. The installation called for glazing to P4 and P5 levels as described in BS EN 356:2000, ‘Glass in building. Security glazing. Testing and classification of resistance against manual attack’. As the MB-SR50N curtain wall system offered a variable

FREEFOAM launch x-wood cladding Freefoam Building Products announce the launch of X-Wood, a completely new and innovative exterior cladding that looks and handles like wood but without all the usual maintenance issues associated with timber. X-Wood is a PVC-U cladding with subtle woodgrain finish designed to bring a refreshing new look to the exterior of any refurbishment or new build project.

In response to the growing popularity of both timber and PVC facades, Freefoam have used their manufacturing expertise to design and produce an attractive high performance cladding comprised of three different layers. A heavy duty through coloured plastic foam core, covered with a durable plastic skin and then coated with market leading Renolit film which creates a hard wearing, stable material with a beautiful subtle woodgrain effect

glazing depth within its design, these thicker more secure DGU’s was easily accommodated. The resulting design was tested prior to installation to ensure that the designed levels of security were achievable and met the clients expectations. The final design offered both a saving in costs over steel whilst still meeting the clients specification required for a medium secure unit using an aluminium system. So why specify aluminium? Some of the reasons that immediately come to mind are ‘strength’, ‘durability’ and ‘recyclability’, it is the latter that makes the specification of aluminium a green choice for architects as aluminium is virtually 100% recyclable many times over. Today over 50% of all aluminium extruded comes from recycled content which uses just 5% of the original energy used to create the aluminium in the first place. So why don’t we just use more recycled aluminium, well, we just can’t get enough to meet demand! Since 1880, when aluminium first became a commercial reality, 75% of all the aluminium ever produced is still in active service, I don’t think many other finish. Any exterior wall covering has a major impact on a building’s appearance. X-Wood cladding offers a wide choice of six contemporary colours to create an attractive finish. From subtle White, Cream and Greyed Cedar to traditional Oak and more dramatic Anthracite Grey and Wine Red all with an impressive ten-year guarantee. Suitable for both commercial and domestic new build or renovation projects and with its high performance credentials X-Wood can also be successfully used in coastal and highly exposed areas. Easy to fit: X-Wood Cladding offers several considerable advantages to architects, contractors, self-builders and installers. The PVC-U material requires no sealing or treating and the system includes a full range of high quality aluminium and PVC-U fitting trims to ensure a quick, neat and professional finish, saving valuable fitting time. Lasts for years: With its unique stable composition X-Wood is manufactured not to warp, split, splinter or decay. Utilising the Renolit woodgrain outer film gives the range extra stability by providing UV protection, meaning that X-Wood is colourfast and weatherproof.

building materials can boast such credentials. Compared to other materials used in fenestration, aluminium profiles are cheaper and quicker to produce, they are also capable of providing intricate shapes for various requirements and, as realised in this project, can be used with other materials to offer cost effective solutions. These composite designs can help the profiles not only achieve incredible strengths, they can also offer high levels of security performance. Website at www.aluprof.eu Enquiry No.256 www.mclink.co.uk/949-256

Minimal maintenance: PVC cladding, like X-Wood, requires very little ongoing maintenance. The PVC-U material is guaranteed to last for ten years just needing a gentle wash down to keep it looking in good condition. Freefoam are PVC cladding specialists with many years of experience manufacturing a choice of cladding ranges, designs and styles both in the UK, Ireland and Europe. X-Wood complements Freefoam’s existing woodgrain single shiplap, embossed double shiplap and weatherboard range. Colin St John, Commercial Director, explains “We have seen the market appetite for PVC cladding steadily increase and are delighted to add this high performance durable product to our range. Ideal for architects and specifiers, the 16mm thick X-Wood board with its attractive finish is the perfect product for any development. We have developed X-Wood to complement our other cladding products and its introduction will give customers the opportunity to approach new and growing markets.” Enquiry No.257 www.mclink.co.uk/949-257

The only bituminous roofing membrane with a 40-year BBA durability statement

Websters have developed a method of Polyurethane Sprayed Foam Insulation that is suitable for both old and new buildings. This continuous polyurethane foam membrane adheres to almost all surfaces and reduces heat loss by up to 80-90%.

Alumasc’s Derbigum waterproofing membrane is the only high-performance bituminous roofing membrane with a 40year durability statement from the BBA (British Board of Agrément). Whilst competitors’ durability statements are

typically for 20 or 25 years, Alumasc’s Derbigum stands out for its proven reliability with a 40-year BBA durability statement, which gives specifiers and end-users added confidence as to the product’s in-service longevity. Wiith a proven track record of success, Alumasc’s Derbigum systems have held a BBA certificate since 1980 and offer a variety of environmentally-beneficial, sustainable characteristics: including membranes with high levels of recycled content; innovative CO2-neutralising membranes; energy efficient ‘cool’ roofs; and vegetal, non-bituminous solutions. ALUMASC Enquiry No.423 www.mclink.co.uk/949-423

Keeping children safe from falling roof tiles It is an exceptional alternative to dry lining as it provides a continuous membrane of unrivalled properties. Sprayed foam insulation is particularly popular as it not only reduces heat loss but can also help keep out wind and wind driven snow; prevent tiles slipping, stops condensation and can even obviate the need for a replacement roof. Also: Cavity Foam Injection, including “hard to treat homes” WEBSTERS INSULATION LTD

According to Aviva, prolonged storm force winds, sub-zero temperatures and snow pose a growing threat to roofs. Dislodged materials present a major risk of injury, particularly on low pitches where débris can accumulate. With extended overhangs, the potential for pedestrians to pass directly beneath where a tile will fall is all the greater so buildings in school playgrounds and busy town centres should, ideally, be given added protection. Individual insurance claims for injury in such situations have exceeded £10,000* so straightforward preventative measures can pay considerable dividends throughout the year. A Klober Trapac® Tile & Snow Guard will catch tile pieces and mortar, while allowing water from melting snow to pass through it. Its support brackets are lightweight, simple to connect and suitable for flat or profiled concrete interlocking tiles and no additional support battens are needed.

Alumasc’s Derbigum Olivine cleans the air

Starring role for SIKA LIQUID PLASTICS at Pinewood Studios

A l u m a s c ’s Derbigum Olivine roofing membrane is a highly effective, durable waterproofing solution which also actively purifies the air and makes a positive contribution towards reducing global warming - by neutralising CO2, the most prevalent greenhouse gas. When rainwater comes into contact with the olivine the CO2 is literally washed out of the air. An irreversible chemical reaction takes place which transforms the CO2 into three environmentally-harmless substances -water, magnesium carbonate and sand. Whilst other socalled ‘environmentally friendly’ membranes incorporate titanium dioxide and require either sulphuric acid or chlorine gas in their production, the Olivine in Alumasc’s Derbigum Olivine surfacing is 100% naturally occurring and simply requires grinding down to the right size. ALUMASC

Enquiry No.422 www.mclink.co.uk/949-422

Sika Liquid Plastics has been given a lead role in a roofing project at Pinewood Studios in Cardiff. The brand’s Sikalastic 625 cold-applied liquid roofing membrane will be applied to the building’s 16,000 m² profiled metal roof deck as a replacement to the existing single-ply system which had become vulnerable due to standing water. With 6,500 m² of shooting space, the building is home to high profile TV series such as Sherlock. Roofing contractor, Central Roofing, has been tasked with the installation, which is expected to take 20 weeks to complete.

The refurbishment programme will be delivered in sections, working around filming periods and will completely encapsulate the roof to protect it from future water ingress. Steve Cookson, technical services manager at Sika Liquid Plastics, said: “The existing membrane used to waterproof the gutters had been sealed using bracing pieces that had created dams along the gutter line, causing ponding of standing water up to 30mm deep. This not only made the membrane vulnerable to failure but also increased the weight loading on the roof. Enquiry No.260 www.mclink.co.uk/949-260

MAGGIE’S CANCER CENTRE ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND, UNITED KINGDOM BUILDING PRODUCTS

RAISING THE ROOFLINE Unusually shaped, the architecturally stunning Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen in Scotland is designed to assist in the psychological and emotional healing process for those affected by cancer. A Licensed Icynene contractor installed both Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and Icynene H2 Foam LiteTM in the pebble-shaped structure. Situated on the southern boundary of the Foresterhill site of the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen, Scotland, Maggie’s Cancer Centre is the latest such centre to provide emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer.

The centre, designed to be homely and full of warmth, aims to provide an environment where those facing cancer can gain support. The centre also intends to inspire imagination from visitors and has contributed to the architecture of the Aberdeen city area. The Design: Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, together with Scottish firm, Halliday Fraser Munro, took on the challenge to create a visually stunning structure in the shape of a pebble. The unusually-shaped single storey structure features a reinforced concrete exterior and timber interior. Steel reinforcements were used to form the structure’s unique shape. With activity and meeting rooms located on the ground floor and office space on the mezzanine, the centre features high-end interior finishes and manages to create a peaceful, welcoming and beautiful space for anyone who visits. Insulating Maggie’s Cancer Centre: A Licensed local Icynene contractor was enlisted by Halliday Fraser Munro to help insulate the centre in February 2013 using two high performance Icynene spray foam insulation products. The spray foam insulation crew used five sets of the 100% water-blown closed cell medium density Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and used seven sets of the open Enquiry No.261 www.mclink.co.uk/949-261

cell Icynene H2Foam LiteTM throughout the curved structure. Spray foam crews applied the medium- density material on the lower part of the structure to a height of 2.5m in an effort to provide additional structural strength. Being 100% water blown, Icynene H2Foam ForteTM has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 1 - the lowest GWP available. In additional to providing structural strength, the closed cell product also can reject bulk water penetrating through the building envelope. Above the 2.5m mark and across the curved roofline Icynene H2Foam LiteTM was applied. Due to the unique curvature of the roofline, crews had to aid the rise of the foam by hand to ensure consistent and even coverage. As a result of using spray foam insulation throughout the design, an extremely high R-value was achieved. With a high R-value, staff and visitors to Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen will be able to work and heal in comfort all year round regardless of the season.

Both Icynene H2Foam LiteTM and Icynene H2Foam ForteTM contribute to creating a positive, peaceful and comfortable environment for visitors to the new centre in Aberdeen. The Result: Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen was completed and opened in September 2013. The structure, set apart by a small landscaped area, is open to anyone requiring its services and support. The unusual shape and highly visual design has been receiving attention from the architecture community and the greater Aberdeen community. In November 2013, the centre was awarded a Commendation by Aberdeen’s Civic Society and in March 2014, GMS Insulations Ltd, the Icynene distributor in the UK, was awarded the Best Architectural Project – International at the Icynene 2014 Global Conference for their involvement in the project.

Listers. 40 years in the making. Let’s face it, the fenestration industry is hard work. Window companies are scrabbling over a very congested marketplace and unfortunately many have fallen by the wayside as the competition gets tougher and tougher. So to have 40 successful years under your belt is a remarkable achievement and that’s exactly what Lister Trade Frames of Stoke on Trent have achieved this year. Established in 1976 and operating from a shed at the bottom of the then owner’s garden, nobody could have foreseen the impact that Listers would

have in the market place. Mark Warren, Managing Director takes up the story. “I joined Listers fabricating PVCu windows in 1987 bringing the workforce to just 3 people. PVCu was a relatively new product and we truly made hay whilst the sun shone, rapidly outgrowing and expanding our premises and eventually moving our factory into the centre of Stoke on Trent.” Over the following 10 years Listers focus on quality products and effective marketing saw sales blossom from an annual turnover of just £200k to over £3Million and employing over 50 staff.

“We’ve had lots of competition over the years but our focus on building long lasting Trade Partnerships has always worked in our favour,” remarked Mark, “often being the first in the UK to deliver new products and standards of service our innovation and strategy has always kept us ahead, strong and successful.” Listers have been recognised for their innovations many times over the years winning numerous top industry awards. Fast forward to 2012 and the Listers Director team completed a buyout which allowed them the flexibility to push forward once again. And the results were almost instantaneous with Listers recording record sales in 2013 and 2014. Listers put their success down to constant evaluation of the market, their customer’s needs and their product lines. “We couldn’t afford to stay as a “white window” fabricator otherwise we would have been swallowed up by the demand for more innovative products,” said Mark, “and

we pride ourselves on offering the widest customer choice using some of the very best products on the market.” 2016 sees Listers reaching the milestone of 40 years trading. With over 120 employees, new showrooms, a purpose built factory, a fully serviced trade counter, an £11m turnover and of course, a vision of expansion for the next 40 years. And what better way to celebrate 40 years of trading? A huge staff party! In typical Listers style, they converted their entire carpark into a funfair with all the games, concessions, rides and entertainment you could think of, along with full bar and catering. “It’s an achievement for Listers to have hit 40 years trading and the thanks has to go to our staff for all of their support over the decades,” said Mark. “We honestly couldn’t have achieved what we have without their help and this 40th anniversary bash is just a little thank you from all of the Directors to our team.” It has been an impressive journey and what is immediately apparent is that Listers consider the last 40 years as only the start of what will become an even more remarkable history. 44 PRODUCT & BUSINESS NEWS Look closer at fuel cost transparency

Taking a closer look at fuel costs can bring unpleasant surprises for some fleet managers. Although fuel probably represents their largest variable cost item apart from staff costs, many have only a limited idea of how much they are spending. Unless a fleet is refuelling with the right commercial rate fuel cards, it is virtually impossible to predict fuel costs with any precision. Paying pump prices means that identical vehicles can refuel with diesel or petrol at exactly the same time, only a few miles from each other, but at greatly differing costs. If one fills up at a supermarket and the other on the motorway, the bills could differ by 10p per litre or more. www.look-closer.co.uk THE FUELCARD PEOPLE

Taking action to tackle skills shortage

Peter leaves his pivotal partner

the Royal School of Music and the Royal Albert Hall, in London, the creation of the Madjeski Stadium – home of Reading Football Club, Glasgow Velodrome and a 600-ton ship for the Jubilee Sailing Trust which teaches disabled and able-bodied people to crew tall ships. Peter’s eclectic career started as a building merchant’s apprentice at Randall’s in Bedford at the age of 17. He spent time as a metals buyer with Edward Baustead Ltd on the LME (London Metal Exchange) before moving into sales at Lloyd Worrall where he gained his Guild of Architectural Ironmongers qualification in 1983. The gypsum industry is taking affirmative action to tackle the skills shortage in the construction sector. A recent report by the Stockerl Training Review confirmed the concerns of the CITB and employers alike that current training provision and uptake for dry trades such as drylining, ceilings and partitions are poor, estimating that as many as two in three site operatives have no formal training. The skills gap is set to widen if more apprentices are not trained and ready to replace the many experienced operatives expected to leave the sector over the next few years. GPDA

Premier Modular Limited, a leading East Yorkshire based manufacturer and constructor of modular buildings, celebrating their 60th year in business, is pleased to announce that its appointment as the contractor providing a series of modular building complexes at Hinkley Point C in Somerset has been confirmed following EDF Energy’s Final Investment Decision. The complex will deliver offices and site welfare facilities required for the construction phase of the new nuclear power station. The 38,000 sqm of office space – the largest modular project awarded in the UK - will house all the management and technical personnel required during the construction stage of this much needed new nuclear power plant. Part of the buildings will be converted after the construction cycle to remain as high quality offices for the permanent site. Almost 1000 steel framed modules are being constructed ‘off site’ at Premier’s state-of- the-art manufacturing facility in East Yorkshire, before being transported to the Hinkley Point C site for final assembly and fitting out – a process that will take only 16 months from manufacture to hand over. Since Premier’s appointment as a preferred bidder for this contract back in July 2015, Premier has continued to work closely with EDF Energy to ensure that delivery of the complex can proceed as soon as the Final Investment Decision has been made. Hinkley Point C will provide reliable, low carbon electricity to meet 7% of UK demand. During its 60 years of operation,

it will avoid 9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. EDF Energy envisages an estimated 25,000 job opportunities will be created over the construction of the new power station, including up to 1,000 apprenticeships. It is also Premier’s intention to contract work, where practical, to companies local to the Hinkley Point C site, where it is anticipated that approximately 35% of the work will be completed. David Harris, Divisional Director at Premier reports “This project is one of the most significant modular projects in history and will really put modular construction on the map. We foresee that this project is not only important for Premier but will also be of significant benefit to the local economies in Yorkshire and Somerset in terms of both sub-contractor and supplier opportunities required to support this major construction project. Premier will resource this project with the full scope of skills required to deliver the scheme to the excellent standard and quality of product that we and EDF Energy expect and we anticipate taking on a number of apprentices throughout the delivery of the scheme.” 0800 3160888 sales@premiermodular.co.uk www.premiermodular.co.uk
