its building system that makes use of hollow blocks that are simply placed one above the other then filled with concrete, promise far fewer snagging issues than timber frame or traditional brick and block construction. External walls can be built using the 500mm long by 250mm high by 365mm wide Durisol blocks which are made from softwood chippings that are mixed with a specially formulated cementitious compound before being pressed into a special mould. Part of the formulation is incorporated to ensure the timber does not rot, and will not burn. Clear channels are created in the block – running from top to bottom – that allow the installation of insulation at manufacturing stage (PIR or Graphite polystyrene) and, once assembled on site, the pouring of concrete to create the strong, rigid structure. Quick solution for levelling floors A former public house in Islington has been refurbished to form a new flatted development, utilising Profloor Levelling System from the A. Proctor Group to level the floors. It was chosen by M P Brothers, who were impressed not only by the Levelling System but also the additional service provided by the A. Proctor Group with technical advice and site visits.M P Brothers found the Profloor Levelling System to be a quick and cost effective alternative to the use of an acoustic underscreed layer. The use of an acoustic underscreed layer along with a wet screed can cause delays on site due to the drying out times, or in some cases, the appropriate time for the drying out not being observed. This can lead to moisture issues affecting subsequent follow on materials and

trades. Profloor Levelling System meets the requirements of Robust Details and is FFT2 compliant. Once installed the floor can be walked on immediately allowing follow on trades to start work quickly. It is easily assembled on site without expensive plant. +44 (0) 1250 872261 ENQUIRY-Card 519

should prime every time. Firstly, priming reduces the floor’s absorbency. When wet smoothing compounds are applied to porous substrates, such as tamped concrete and timber, moisture can pass into the subfloor which in turn expels air. Secondly, priming increases adhesion! Correct priming serves as a bonding aid between the compound and the substrate. Thirdly, correct priming acts as an interface between materials preventing incompatibility or reaction. The use of a barrier primer will prevent this unwanted contact, avoiding a reaction and possible failure. The renowned Ultra Floor range from Instarmac Group includes Prime IT Multi-surface Primer, a moisture tolerant, water based acrylic primer, sealer and bonding aid, suitable for porous and non porous substrates. PWS Scotland chosen for latest Hungry Horse developments Two of the newest Hungry Horse restaurants to open in Scotland feature REHAU PVC-U windows fabricated and installed by Glasgow based commercial specialists PWS Scotland, part of the Perfect Glazing group. Foiled windows in the REHAU TOTAL70C system have been installed in both the Tail O’the Bank in Greenock and The Oystercatcher in East Kilbride

to match the exterior styling of the buildings. At the Tail O’the Bank the windows have been foiled in a smooth slate grey to suit the contemporary look of the pub/restaurant and its waterfront setting on East India Harbour. At the more traditionally styled Oystercatcher, the windows are in a Goldenoak woodgrain foil with a striking six section apex window

fabricated for a gable feature. PWS fabricated and installed more than 50 windows on each project, working on behalf of main contractors Ogilvie Construction. They were awarded the contract on the basis of their product quality and on site efficiency, which had been proven on previous successful installations for large main contractors in Scotland. On both projects, PVC-U was specified

as the frame material by the client Greene King Plc working with architects Smith Design Associates because of its low maintenance, thermal efficiency and choice of finishes. REHAU prides itself on being the systems house with the broadest and best colour and finishes range and now offers 22 different colour options. ENQUIRY-Card 533

Brio Brings flexible space and style to a London apartment

Brio, the leading manufacturer of interior and exterior folding door and window architectural solutions has provided architects CGT Works with the solution for opening up a Georgian interior in a flexible manner. CGT Works describes itself as an architectural and construction service company operating in London and Italy with over 10 years' experience

specialising in residential buildings and retail premises looking for budget or high-level design solutions. A recent project for the company involved converting a two bed flat in a Georgian terrace in London’s Earls Court into a more flexible living space. It involved knocking down the wall between the living room and the second bedroom to open up the space and let in more light. The owner still wanted the option of closing it off so the decision was made to install custom 3.4m x 8m panel doors – three sliding and one pivoting. The doors were made by a local joiner and installed using Brio’s top hanging Single Run Zero Clearance hardware system. According to Enrico: “Brio was the only manufacturer that provided kit that suited the requirements for such heavy doors – they weight 100 kilos a panel. You can see the tracks but they are very discreet, set into the ceiling and the floor. It has been so successful we are now using the system on another project in the same building”. Enrico found Brio when researching the project online. “The Brio website is very good. All the details we needed were there and easily accessible plus technical drawings. I also spoke to Brio HQ about some details and the technical department was very good

and obviously experienced.” Because these floor to ceiling door projects can present their own challenges when it comes to sliding door hardware, Brio has designed and manufactured its Single Run top hung system with a Zero Clearance option. The Zero Clearance option, available across Brio’s Single Run 80 – Single Run 250 product portfolio, successfully achieves the modern minimalist look with hardware that is discreetly hidden from view. Single Run Zero Clearance hardware allows minimal gaps between the door panel and hardware, offering a pleasing aesthetic finish to floor to ceiling installations. With no hanger plates or screws protruding above the top edge of the door, Single Run Zero Clearance has been designed to achieve clearances of 3mm between the track and the top of the door. And, to go with the discreet top, the new spring loaded guide and bottom rail can also be concealed

within the bottom edge of the door thereby extending Zero Clearance to floor level. “The new Zero Clearance option has already proved popular with architects and specifiers as only 3mm clearance is required between the top of the door and the track. The track can be installed into the ceiling so the door looks as though it is floating as the hangers are difficult if not impossible to see. It is a very aesthetically pleasing effect,” says David Newton, General Manager at Brio UK. For more details on the BRIO product range visit ENQUIRY-Card 534

Thermal Performance from NorDan NorDan’s timber sliding doorsets feature in the main living spaces of this novel design by award winning Arboreal Architects at Bethnal Green London. Mazarin House is a block of 6 two-bedroom flats in Woodford which achieves energy performance of Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. Architect Tom Raymont from Arboreal says: “We chose NorDan products for our building because of the excellent thermal performance using only double glazed units. The timber frames reduce their carbon footprint. We emphasised the natural beauty of wood, by choosing the clear lacquer finish for the interior of the frames.    The external factory fitted aluminium cladding was anodised to a bespoke colour to match our designs.” The design optimises the use of space on a constrained site using digitally fabricated timber structure and sets high standards of sustainable design. Neighbouring homes are both large detached 1930s homes

and 1970s blocks of flats and the design of the building had to provide a neat transition between these two conditions. To optimise the available space, light and views, a nonorthogonal geometry was used in the design. All 6 flats achieved south facing double height living spaces and generous balconies. The walls floors and roof were built from cross laminated timber panels – with the entire cross-laminated timber structure (walls, floors and roof) completed in just 5 weeks. These can form a continuous shell that can easily be made air tight to eliminate draughts. This in turn supports a continuous layer of insulation to eliminate any cold bridge. The project was built by a small private developer aiming to deliver high-quality homes in close proximity to central London. The resulting homes are for sale and rental. The

aspiration from the outset was that the flats should meet the best practice for sustainable homes (exceeding the current Building Regulations) and be highly enjoyable to live in. Space and room layouts were designed to be flexible for a wide range of users from small families to sharing housemates. The Code for Sustainable Homes sets clear targets for energy performance and water usage that were adopted as policies by the local council and made mandatory in the planning permission. The energy performance criteria cover both building fabric (insulation and air-tightness) and services such as heating, hot water and photovoltaic onsite electricity generation. The water use criteria ensures that the total use from all kitchen and bathroom fittings is kept within sensible limits. NorDan was founded in Norway in 1926 by the

Rasmussen family. It’s still a family business today run by the third generation. The firm is one of the largest producers in Europe and has a fine reputation for high performance timber and aluminium clad timber windows and doors produced

from 8 factories in Europe. NorDan has six regional project offices in the UK to be close to the customer. ENQUIRY-Card 542

Wakaflex lead-free flashing – the cost-effective answer to lead theft Wakaflex®, from roofing accessory specialist Klober, is a lightweight, BBAcertified lead-free flashing which is used for roofing abutment work and sealing gas, oil and wood burner flue penetrations. It has similar malleability to lead and can be stretched by up to 60% by virtue of a flexible aluminium mesh reinforcement which allows for easy dressing to any profile without use

of a forming tool. This makes it ideal for complex detailing, large format concrete tiles and sealing double-lapped tiles which would otherwise require a specialist roofer. Use it too for flashings around chimneys, skylights and roof lights, pipe penetrations and solar panels. Wakaflex has a smooth facing which, unlike some flashings, is largely unaffected by stretching. It has a high-

strength, self-adhesive butyl backing which provides immediate weatherproofing of almost any roofing material. This is particularly useful on laps as the backing welds to the facing without heat. Cut by knife, shears or scissors, Wakaflex is not susceptible to thermal movement and can therefore be laid in long lengths without fixing clips. In addition to Lead Grey, it is also

available in Brown, Red and Anthracite and can therefore be used to match most commonly used tiles and slates. E: T: - 0845 600 4427 W: ENQUIRY-Card 547

Kemperol Protects Liverpool's Royal Liver Building

Part of Liverpool’s UNESCO designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City, the Grade I listed Royal Liver Building is one of the city’s ‘Three Graces’ and an iconic waterfront landmark. The building’s imposing façades are crowned by a cupola in each corner, each forming the roof of a feature boardroom office below. The huge clock towers either side of the building mirror this pattern, with a ‘mini’ cupola on each of their four corners. All 12 cupolas direct the eye upwards to the summit of the building where a verdigris Liver

Bird perches eternally on each of the final, central cupolas. With Cunard, one of Liverpool’s greatest companies, celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, it was time to refurbish the distinctive cupolas of one of its most famous buildings in the world in time for a celebratory flotilla. Kemper System’s 1K-PUR cold liquidapplied waterproofing system was selected to complete the challenging scheme. Limited Access The cupolas are of concrete construction and have been protected by various waterproofing systems over

the years but water ingress was becoming an issue and in some areas the concrete was failing and had to be repaired to return the surface to its original domed shape. Specialist Approach Pendlebury selected the Kemperol 1KPUR system following trials carried out prior to commencing the project to ascertain the best approach to delivering the project with the level of finish required by the building’s management company, CBRE, and English Heritage while managing the time constraints of the project. The challenging weather conditions of the building’s waterfront location and the need to identify a system that was suitable for the varying surfaces on and around the cupolas also influenced the specification. The method of fleece application and ease of use of the Kemperol system was ideally suited to meeting these criteria on a scheme that involved working up to 14 storeys high. The installation team began the restoration of each cupola by repairing each concrete structure using Kemper System’s primer mixed with quartz sand to make a mortar that could be used to build up the eroded areas. The large cupolas have a two metre high vertical surface before the structure starts to curve and gradually become

flat over the top. Pendlebury used a combination of Kemper System’s EP5 primer and quartz sand to create a key on the substrate before applying the liquid Kemperol 1K-PUR resin with brushes and rollers. Kemper System’s 120g reinforcement fleece, cut to size and shape on site, was then laid onto the wet resin. Finally, further resin was immediately applied over the top to allow complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece in a single wet-onwet process to provide a totally seamless, monolithic membrane. For the larger cupolas, the scheme also involved scroll features and termination details and the installation team also painstaking applied the system around the solid granite mini scroll features that surround each of the smaller cupolas. Russells Storming South

Twelve months ago, as part of its strategic growth plan, the company appointed a new Regional Sales Manager Paul McLoughlin with 30 years building, construction and roofing sector experience to launch a new Southern Division and to work alongside Business Development Manager Southern Martin Taylor.

There are currently 155,500 plots under construction, this is 7.9 per cent higher compared to the same time last year and 1.3 per cent higher that last month. According to the latest economic construction market review in June the majority of construction contracts awarded in May, by value, were in the South East, accounting to 34 per cent of the UK total.

The South is now delivering the fastest volume growth for leading independent supplier Russell Roof Tiles. Its success in the region is attributed to the growing portfolio of new products. This growth in volume sales reflects the latest figures for new home construction – both private and social housing is one of Russell Roof Tiles primary sectors. NHBC (National Home Building Federation) data for the three months to the end of April showed that 34,250 homes were completed. This is 19.6 per cent more than the same period in 2014, with private housing 5 per cent up and affordable housing a massive 57 percent up.

Russell Roof Tiles provides products for the UK’s top house builders and high profile social housing and commercial projects, where sustainability and ecocredentials are of the utmost priority. But it is Russell Roof Tiles investment in product development with innovative new products well suited to the Southern market which is attributed to business growth in the region. Andrew Hayward, Managing Director at Russell Roof Tiles commented; “The regional requirements across the UK are quite specific for pitched roofing. Our expanding range, specifically our clay lifestyle blends designed to deliver an authentic clay tile look has been particularly popular in the South.” Andrew added: “It is hugely significant that we are having such an impact in the South, this reflects both the growth in the region, the appeal of our product range and our strategic expansion of our Southern sales team last year.”

Andrew Hayward, Managing Director at Russell Roof

Russell Roof Tiles already has a significant number of prestigious clients in the region including leading housing builders Bovis and Barratt Homes. It also supplied £750,000 roofing solutions for Center Parcs for all of its 625 forest lodges at Center Parcs Woburn Forest. Russell Roof Tiles manufactures on three state of the art plants, in Burton-on-Trent and in Lockerbie. The firm makes a range of concrete roof tiles and fittings and employs a team of 160 across its three sites and this year celebrates 50 years of manufacturing. ENQUIRY-Card 555

NDC’s Starglaze makes garage conversion shine! The project A contemporary garage conversion adjacent to a circa: 1970 detached bungalow in Camberley, Surrey comprising a stylish double bedroom and en suite. The requirements The budget dictated that the height of the ceilings could not be raised to ‘normal’ room height and most importantly the layout of the property meant that fitting windows in the conversion was not feasible therefore rooflights were the logical solution.

the roof of the garage conversion would be clearly visible and therefore it was important that the skylights were visually appealing plus met all building regs. Using NDC’s brand matrix the building contractor decided to fit ‘Starglaze’, a flat glass rooflight that is perfect for use in areas where a low profile rooflight solution is required.

The solution Glass skylights were specified because

A Starglaze double glazed glass rooflight 600 x 1200mm was fitted in the 2.5 x 4m bedroom and a 475 x 700mm rooflight in the 1.5 x 2 en suite. Hit & Miss Ventilation and MK2 vertical PVC upstands were specified and in the bedroom a manual hinged ventilation was included with a winding rod. The

construction of the units means there is no cold bridging so the risk of condensation is reduced and good insulation is ensured. NFRC launches membership New Velux® Sun Tunnel brings awareness campaign daylight to the darkest spaces A new membership awareness campaign has been launched by The National Federation of Roofing Contractors, (NFRC). Entitled ‘Get Smart, Get Savvy, Get NFRC’, the campaign aims to educate the roofing community on the role of the UK’s largest roofing trade association, and to promote all the benefits that membership brings. NFRC today represents over 70% of the roofing industry by value. Determined to widen its reach, NFRC is hopeful that this latest initiative will help recruit new members to become involved in the industry. By outlining the advantages of involvement with an active and dynamic association, NFRC aims to dispel any myths that may be stopping some companies from joining. It also aims to encourage existing members to take full advantage of vastly increased membership benefits.

Leading roof window manufacturer VELUX® has launched the New Generation Sun Tunnel, designed to allow daylight to enter spaces previously inaccessible to natural light. The new Sun Tunnel, a natural daylight solution for windowless areas, comprises a round, rooftop window and a tunnel to transport the daylight inside. The new, improved product means you can now help customers achieve a brighter, more natural indoor environment. This is due to Edge Glow, a new ring of clear glass around the edge of the ceiling diffuser that allows for better daylight dispersion. The resulting natural light is more dynamic, more cost effective and brings more health benefits than electrical lighting, as well as reducing energy consumption. ENQUIRY-Card 147 ENQUIRY-Card 148

The result is a range that is extremely competitive from a price perspective, beautifully made and available in a quick turnaround time to help better manage a project,” added Richard. M&J Group wins National Roofing Award with IKO roofing

The number of local authority owned homes has declined steadily over the years almost exclusively as a result of Right to Buy (RTB). The scheme which allows most council tenants to buy their council house at a discounted rate. South Kesteven District Council is not alone in being a District that currently does not have enough council houses to meet the demand for social rented property. The decrease in the number of council owned family houses in popular areas means it is difficult to match housing demand with available stock. The project used Russell Roof Tiles’ Grampian tiles A standard flat interlocking roof tile, combining the traditional appearance of slate with the security of an interlocking design and the economy of concrete.

M&J Group won the Best Flat Roofing Refurbishment Project award at the National Roofing Awards in May using IKO’s products. The winning project was the sensitive and challenging refurbishment of the Neo-Natal Unit roof at Hammersmith Hospital. It was selected from over 100 entries throughout the UK. The project faced a number of challenges due to the nature of the building. The roof top plant, which covered almost the entire roof space, services the internal climate, the MRI scanner and the delicate medical equipment. It was essential that the equipment remained in full working order throughout the project, so great care and consideration was taken. For example, the MRI Coolant Quench Pipe (CQP) prevents the highly sensitive MRI scanner from overheating. ENQUIRY-Card 149 ENQUIRY-Card 150

Yeoman Rainguard’s Range of Ecologically Friendly Rainwater Systems

It’s Easy Being Green Eco-friendly is a phrase that is banded about quite a lot these days but one which is becoming more and more important when it comes to the sustainability and lifecycle of a new building. As with everything putting organic or eco-friendly in front

of a brand can lead to the cost increasing. Not so with Yeoman Rainguard. Yeoman Rainguard’s range of metal rainwater systems are already an ecologically sound choice with a range of systems to suit all budgets. Their green credentials are also increased by the fact that they require no maintenance or repainting giving up to a 25 year life span (and more) before requiring attention or replacement. Economically Sound SL Aluminium Systems 100% recyclable the SL range is manufactured from 2mm thick Aluminium for the gutters with the downpipes being 3mm thick. The system is a perfect choice for the construction and housing development market where ecological and economic

advantages go hand in hand. The Traditional Look of XL Aluminium The XL rainwater system has the same recyclable properties as the SL range but with 3mm thick gutters and pipes is more suited to those looking for a cost effective yet stylish system with a traditional look, delivering many years of maintenance free service adding value to any property. Saint-Gobain PAM UK extends VortX roof drainage range

Saint-Gobain PAM UK, part of international materials company Saint-Gobain, has extended its range of cast iron, VortX roof outlets with the launch of a new 150mm vertical body unit. Designed in accordance with BS EN 1253, the new, BSP threaded outlet has a compact vertical body and is available with both a flat and domical grating, with the domical version achieving a flow rate of 14.5 litres per second – making it one of the highest performing

cast iron roof outlets on the market. Connections to 160 OD pipework are made using a cast iron spigot adaptor. Commenting on the launch, Mike Rawlings, Marketing Manager – Soil, Drain & Rainwater at Saint-Gobain PAM UK said:

“The high flow rate and compact body design of the new 150mm outlet offers space saving benefits to the customer, and potentially means fewer outlets are required to remove water from flat roof structures. “Also new to the range is a stainless steel gravel guard to suit the vertical roof outlets.” The rest of the VortX roof range includes a 100mm vertical outlet as well as balcony outlets with flat and notched gratings, along with two-way outlets, clamping rings and raising pieces. All bodies are available as spigot and BSP versions, allowing connection to cast iron, PVC and other materials. To ensure durability, all of the flat gratings in the range are sherardised, which provides a hard wearing and anticorrosive finish. Cast iron domical gratings, clamping rings and raising pieces in the range are supplied black epoxy coated. In addition, cast iron roof outlet bodies are supplied in a grey epoxy coating used for EN877 pipework, performing to high standards of adhesion, chemical resistance and temperature cycling.

Cast iron has a proven track record for its longevity over the lifetime of the building. Manufactured from up to 97% recycled content, end of life cast iron products are also 100% recyclable, and can therefore be returned to the furnace to make new cast iron products. Rawlings continues: “The VortX range is the result of a continuous development programme that offers installers everything they need to do the job, without complicated selecting procedures. “As all of the outlets in the range are made from cast iron, they offer robust, long lasting solutions for most construction market applications. We’ll be adding more products to the VortX range throughout 2015.” For more information on the new range of VortX roof outlets, visit ENQUIRY-Card 564

New Bournemouth Student Centre Goes Solar expected to require a lot of power. The choice of solar PV modules was dictated by two factors; efficiency, which was necessary because of the limited roof area available, and colour. Photon Energy selected Sunpower SPR-E20-327-BLK monocrystalline modules rated at 327W each, using 84 units for a roof area of 140sq m.

The new £10.5m Student Centre on Bournemouth University’s main site, the Talbot Campus, incorporates a solar photovoltaic (PV) array designed and installed by Reading-based Photon Energy Ltd. The installation is one of a number of measures that will enable the building to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Photon Energy installed the solar PV array on the southfacing pitched roof of the storage building to the rear of the main seven storey, concrete

framed Student Centre building, which is the most carbon efficient building on the campus. The Student Centre has been designed as a hub

where students can meet informally for study-related activities and a variety of social activities, and with long opening hours may be

Hoare Lea, the mechanical and electrical contractors for the project, required an electrical output of 27kWp using high efficiency 18 - 20% modules guaranteed for 90% maximum power output over 10 years. The Sunpower black modules were specified for aesthetic reasons, to blend with the cladding on the main structure. The modules are attached to the roof using K2 Systems fixings and a pre-installed custom made steel framework. The two inverters, used to convert the DC electricity generated by the solar PV

modules into AC power compatible with the National Grid and the electricity supply system within the building, were Goodwe 15K-DT and Goodwe 12K-DT. Installation took two full weeks in total, with up to four operatives on site at any one time; and the finished installation was commissioned in December 2014. Photon Energy’s project engineer Abu Luswata said: “Our operatives did particularly well on site as they had to cope with frosty winter conditions, and of course were working to the highest health and safety standards.” The client was Bournemouth University Higher Education Corporation and the main contractor, Willmott Dixon, is a major client for Photon Energy. Straw eco house offers sustainable living in Yorkshire A self-build sustainable house on the outskirts of York has pushed the boundaries of carbon-neutral living with the help of a Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan air source heat pump. Chris Gibbins, a former business analyst, set out to build a house for his young family made from straw bales, and has allied this highly sustainable material with a raft of other energy efficient measures in his mission to produce an exemplar in sustainable house building. “Straw has all the right properties,” says Chris Gibbins. “It’s thermally insulating, it’s a waste product, there is no carbon produced - in fact it locks up carbon - so from every angle it’s a great product to use.” A four-day course on building with the material at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales gave Chris the skills required to start his project. The four-bedroom, threestorey property in the East Riding of Yorkshire has allied under-floor insulation, loft

insulation, high-grade windows, photovoltaic roof panels and solar thermal with an 8.5kW Ecodan air source heat pump. “We were faced with the choice of using either oil or electric because there is no gas in the village,” explains Chris. “Originally, we thought we might be able to get away without heating the house at all, but we have had over a month at -13ºC, and the house wouldn’t remain warm at that temperature for that length of time. So we installed the heat pump as a background source to ensure that we achieved the right level of comfort throughout the winter period. In addition we need to look to the future because if we decide to sell the house the buyer will expect a certain level of heating throughout the property.” “The whole house is incredibly efficient,” says Chris Wilde of Yorkshire Energy Systems, who installed the Ecodan unit. “Despite the fact that it is quite a large house we have installed a very modest size pump, as that is all that will be required

to achieve the desired level of heating.” Ecodan is accredited under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and is therefore among the many features of this project that qualify for the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The RHI pays participants of the scheme that generate and use renewable energy to heat their buildings. By increasing the generation of heat from renewable energy sources (instead of fossil fuels), the RHI

helps the UK reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet targets for reducing the effects of climate change. Although air source heat pumps remain relatively new, Ecodan has been on the UK market now for over seven years and has already proved itself as an efficient way of heating homes. It can achieve level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, and even higher when used in conjunction with other improvements such as

photovoltaics or solar thermal. In this installation, the Ecodan unit provides all of the space heating and also makes a contribution to the hot water; Chris Gibbins hopes that the RHI income from this, in conjunction with the installation of other renewable energy technologies, will bring him close to covering all of his energy costs. Polypipe Underfloor Heating Receives Good Housekeeping Reader Recommended Endorsement Polypipe Underfloor Heating has received the ‘Good Housekeeping Reader Recommended’ endorsement, following a survey of Good Housekeeping readers that have Polypipe underfloor heating systems installed in their homes.

I can highly recommended it. It is unobtrusive unlike radiators and gives a comfortable heat.”

Another said: “A brilliant product at a very good price. When we were renovating the bungalow we were able to fit it easily. We were able to do away with all the radiators in the property and the cost was lower than it would have been to fit a new radiator system throughout.

The Good Housekeeping Institute requested feedback from readers on a number of criteria, including reliability, ease of control and the simplicity of the installation process. The Good Housekeeping Reader Recommended logo unites the expertise of the Good Housekeeping Institute with the valuable personal opinions of Good Housekeeping readers. Testing protocols and feedback questionnaires are developed by the GHI, and the results are based solely on the experience of the Good Housekeeping reader panel to ensure the product meets consumer performance expectations. The GHI testers collated and analysed the results from the survey and Polypipe underfloor heating has received ‘Good Housekeeping Reader Recommended’ status as a result. Following the announcement, orders of Polypipe Underfloor Heating look set to soar, and Polypipe are calling on installers to join the Registered Installer Network to make sure they can take advantage of the opportunity. Rachel Smith, Marketing Communications Manager at Polypipe, said: “We are delighted to

Comments from the Good Housekeeping panel :-

“We have hardly had to have the heating on this winter as the house retains its heat; the running costs are noticeably lower than having radiators!

receive this endorsement from Good Housekeeping readers. This demonstrates the ease of installation, design freedom and efficiency that Polypipe Underfloor Heating can bring to the home. “Coupled with Kelly Hoppen’s continuing endorsement of Polypipe Underfloor Heating, this announcement represents the latest in Polypipe’s ongoing campaign to raise consumer awareness of underfloor heating systems and the benefits they can provide for a range of property types. “As demand continues to increase, we expect our merchants and installers to reap the benefits brought by an expanding customer base.”

Rinnai +Renewables= Boosted DHW efficiency and Legionella compliance According to Chris Goggin - associate director of Rinnai UK - renewables technology paired with a continuous flow hot water heating unit can affect major efficiencies in domestic hot water provision.

We need to find ways of using current renewables technology, be it solar thermal, solar PV or heat pump technology, in a practical manner maximised by traditional fuel sources. One of the most ecological and economical methods is to design a system with primary renewable sources and supported by secondary sources such as continuous flow hot water heating. There has been pioneering products in this category - this includes solar thermal store of hot water and both flat plate and evacuated tube collectors, each with specific benefits to suit the differing design aspects and building envelope needs. Either option will provide years of low-maintenance, lowcost energy for heating water during the summer months – and beyond. Water heated by the solar panels is stored and technologically this is unlikely to come up to a workable temperature all year round, so the

boosting of the pre-heated water to the required temperature by a secondary heat source will be a requirement. With this system it will guarantee maximum solar gain whilst optimizing gas input. In this scenario a continuous flow water heater can be utilised as the secondary heat source to give the solar heated water the required boost. These are hot water heating products which are intelligent, fully modulating units, giving an output range from 56kW down to 2.27kW, and only use as much gas as is needed to bring the required volume of water to temperature. For example, if the solar panel array can only achieve a temperature of 40°C within the stored water instead of the required 60°C, and there is a demand on the system of 15 litres a minute, the fully modulating intelligent Rinnai unit will increase the temperature by the required 20°C (±1°C) whilst only using the required 21kW. If the demand drops to say 5l/min the heater will modulate down accordingly to an output 7kW.

This system is a blueprint for maximizing renewables gain. If you want to make it even more so, opt for one of Rinnai’s condensing water heaters and push the efficiencies envelope even further. Another technological advantage in using a continuous flow water heat as a booster is that you can wipe out any worries about legionella being a problem with stored water. If the store is below 60°C the Rinnai Continuous Flow Water heater always ensures that the 60°C minimum is always met, so the system will always comply with Building Regulation L8. If a secondary return system is used again there is a guarantee that the return will always be at 50° again in compliance of L8. For all-year round domestic hot water, Rinnai Infinity HE gas fired condensing continuous flow water heaters are supplied renewables-ready and are also easily retrofitable with current renewable technology. Rinnai’s award-winning renewable water heating solutions are designed to

offer a perfect blend of eco-friendly technologies, guaranteed to provide a constant flow of hot water 365 days of the year. The pairing of a Rinnai Infinity unit with renewables technology really is the perfect fit for a never ending DHW supply. Rinnai’s expert team is available to help with the design, specification and installation of a renewables heating system. For more information on the RINNAI product range visit ENQUIRY-Card 577

New products for the Schlüter -DITRA-HEAT range A popular electrical underfloor heating system from market leading manufacturer Schlüter-Systems has been enhanced with exciting new features in its range. Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT has become popular with specifers, installers and homeowners as the perfect all-in-one integrated solution for use under tiles and natural stone flooring. The product provides time saving benefits when it comes to both installation and heat reaction time and its overall assembly uses less material therefore resulting in a lower overall height. Schlüter®DITRA-HEAT does all of this as well as provide 5 other key features, uncoupling, crack bridging, CE marked waterproofing, vapour pressure equalisation and load distribution; ensuring tile and stone coverings stay crack-free and as good as the day they were installed. Its unique studded uncoupling membrane and loose cabling make it an installer’s dream, providing variation in size and layout plus extensive time saving benefits; whilst its low assembly height, of just 5.5mm, makes it versatile

enough to suit any project including renovation, refurbishment and new build – it’s even suitable for installation over problematic substrates. And now the system benefits from even more flexibility thanks to a new feature rich touchscreen digital thermostat launched this year which allows the end user to have control over individual room temperatures. The digital thermostat Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-E-R includes full touchscreen technology and provides two floor sensors, with the option of air temperature, ensuring climate control is balanced at all times and at only 5.5 x 5.5cm, blends easily into its environment. The thermostat comes ready to run straight from the box. Industry urgently needs centralised body for all current, pending and planned legislation and new regulations.....

Tony Gittings, of water heating product manufacturer Rinnai, argues that the industry is in dire need of a central body or council to co-ordinate the burgeoning weight of new and pending standards, legislation, Codes of Practice. This includes emerging support technologies such as BiM which needs clear and concise communication to the marketplace.

Frese launch balancing valve

Within the next 10 years the HVAC industry could change out of all recognition as we face an unprecedented set of challenges here in the UK and Europe. The industry is facing the relentless drive to ever greater energy efficiency and lower emissions – all in line with the UK’s legally binding carbon reduction target of 80% CO2 (on 1990 levels) by 2050. The UK government and European commission’s

manual Introducing

growing agenda for the enablement of the greening of industry has resulted in the emergence of new Building Regulations, green technology accelerators such as RHI and the commercial green deal. Also part of this is the introduction of new technologies, such as BiM, designed to unlock more efficient ways of working at all stages of the project life-cycle. And there is more – the implementation of Energy labelling to energy related products across the HVAC industry is currently underway. The UK and northern European

Infinity 780BF

markets are amongst some of the most heavily legislated in the world when it comes to the HVAC industry. The regulatory horizon will see amendments to the Building Regulations; the introduction of energy labels for water heating equipment; the tiered approach to emission reductions taking full effect from 2015 and beyond (under the guidance of ERP) thus continually driving efficiencies and emission reductions. There is such a blizzard of mandatory information that it is a job in itself to keep up with it all – and all in addition to maintaining and servicing existing customers and, winning new contracts. There is a pressing need, I believe, for complete and transparent harmonisation of key product parameters and measurements to ensure

simple and accurate communication. This need can be answered in the form of a centralised body – or council of existing bodies and organisations - which can coordinate all the information swirling around on industry topics which are of such major importance. The body or council - whichever wishes to take up the baton - should represent the information needs of the contractor, consultant, end-user, and property owner and manager. There is an overwhelming need for one recognised source delivering clear and concise information on all current and impending legislation. We can supply a value-added solution for today and the future – now ENQUIRY-Card 580

Pegler Yorkshire launches new Keston guarantees boiler quality generation of Stainless Steel Tube with new five year warranty

Frese, the market leader in pressure independent flow and temperature control valves (PICVs) has announced the launch of its first ever Static Balancing Valve (STBV). Having pioneered super-efficient ‘dynamic’ balancing valves, which can cut pump energy costs by up to 50%, Frese is now launching the Frese STBV Fixed Orifice Double Regulating Valve. According to managing director Stephen Hart, it makes sense for Frese to turn its expertise to manual valves. The new valve will offer a number of benefits from being simple to install and adjust, having a clear two digit presetting scale and delivering accurate control at all flow settings.

Charlton & Jenrick are very pleased to announce the introduction of the stunning 780BF to the existing Infinity range of fires. The 780BF has a beautiful and extremely realistic flame picture, which will both compliment and enhance any living space. With a modest input of 3.4kW, and an impressive output of 2.7kW, the 780BF is both wonderful to look at and economical to maintain, with a generous 87% efficiency. The large ceramic glass viewing area of the Infinity 780BF is the same size as the 780FL, which means the new fire is compatible with the fireplace package designs already available including the Edgemond & Rembrandt suites.

As an innovator in the world of plumbing and heating solutions Pegler Yorkshire has announced the launch of its XPress SS630 tube - a new grade of stainless steel tube that benefits from equivalent strength and corrosion properties as the 316 and provides a new choice for the commercial marketplace. The new grade of tube is already widely used across Europe because of its unique qualities. Innovation from Brickworker is a cut above Making a straight cut through stone floor tiles, flag stones and paving slabs just got a lot simpler, thanks to the Slab Cutting Guide, a simple yet clever and effective idea from Brickworker, available in the UK through Hyde. This patented, innovative device locks simply and quickly on to the slab or tile, enabling a safe and accurate

straight cut to be achieved, when using either a 12 or 14 disc cutter. Made from sturdy stainless steel, the Slab Cutting Guide from Brickworker helps tradesmen work more efficiently, accurately and safely whether cutting paving slabs or natural stone. The Slab Cutting Guide puts paid to having to mark out lines before cutting freehand.

With many tradesmen opting to break HSE guidelines in order to cut dry, rather than risking water from a wet cut mixing with dust and making the marking virtually impossible to see, the Slab Cutting Guide offers a simple, safe alternative that won’t slow the job down. Made in the UK, the Slab Cutting Guide from Brickworker can be used for cutting slabs between 20mm and 60mm in thickness and from 210mm to 910mm long. Brickworker products are available in the UK through Hyde. For more information call 0121 705 7987 or visit ENQUIRY-Card 582
