Ironmongery Direct Guides Tradespeople through ITS - Biggest Catalogue new regulations with new home security checklist Ahead of the launch of new door and window security regulations, IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade, has created a new home security checklist to help trade professionals ensure all new windows and doors are installed with the correct ironmongery and meet the new security requirements. Due to come into effect on 1st October 2015, at the start of National Home Security Month, Approved Document Q is a new regulation which sets out requirements to ensure that all newly installed windows and doors are able to withstand physical attacks from casual or opportunistic burglars. The introduction of the regulations will ensure that all new windows and doors comply with recognised standards and will therefore deliver the highest levels of security. To ensure trade professionals are up to speed as soon as the new regulations come into effect, IronmongeryDirect developed the handy checklist to inform tradespeople on everything they need to know when installing a new door or window so that it complies with the new guidelines. The simple and easy-to-use checklist contains an annotated illustration of a front door to highlight all of the ironmongery components covered by the regulations, from hinges and multipoint locking systems to door viewers, letterboxes and door frames. It details the requirements for each component, including the standards they must comply with and the minimum and maximum sizes. It also includes in-depth information on door sets to clearly outline how the requirements must be met, making it easier for tradespeople to adhere to the regulations. In addition, the checklist also outlines the regulations that must be complied with when installing new windows. This includes ensuring that all

windows meet PAS 24:2012 and that the frames are mechanically fixed to the building. As building regulations can often contain jargon that is hard to understand, the checklist also features a handy ‘jargon buster’. This explains key terminology in a simple way so that the regulations are easier to understand and tradespeople are clear on exactly what is required when it comes to fitting new windows and doors. Jamie Johnson, product manager at IronmongeryDirect, said: “With 62% of burglaries taking place atnight, it is important to ensure that homes are properly secure, particularly in winter when it gets dark quicker. Keeping a home safe is of the utmost importance to all home owners, and as windows and doors are the two main entrance points into a property, these should require the most attention. “With Approved Document Q due to come into force, it has become even more vital to ensure that new windows are doors are up to scratch and are able to prevent intruders from forcing entry into the property. To help tradespeople understand the new regulations, IronmongeryDirect has put together the easy to use checklist, which highlights all the correct components that new doors are required to have to make them compliant and legal. “The handy guide has been designed to make the task of installing doors and windows more simple, and can be used for quick reference whilst tradespeople are completing work on a property. We are dedicated to supporting our customers and the trade industry and by putting together informative checklists such as this one, we are able to offer sound advice and make their job a little easier.” For more information, please visit -security

A self-funded trip to Germany saw 45 members, staff and friends of Network VEKA head over to VEKA AG from all corners of the UK and Ireland. While the majority of delegates travelled via regional airports, a number of committed motorcyclists made the trip on their beloved bikes. Dennis Sumner from Force 8, Sue and Phil Chick from Delta Plastics, Austin Greene from Assure, and Assure Inspector Graham Leonard each journeyed on two wheels. Network VEKA MD John Ogilvie, who was on the trip, explains: “The entire group was welcomed by Global VEKA

VEKA AG welcomes Network VEKA & Steve Davis Group Executive Board Member Mr Bonifatius Eichwald for a presentation about the history of the VEKA

worldwide group. “During his presentation, it was reiterated that the UK market is doing very well, which we know firsthand, but it was great to hear it reinforced. “This was followed by a tour of the plant and lunch. Network VEKA's Brand Ambassador Steve Davis took the opportunity to play Dr Werner Schuler, also a member of the Executive Board in a 'best of five' game of pool (which Dr Schuler won 3-2!) before he entertained us all with one or two of his best trick shots.“We were keen to thank our hosts for their warm

welcome and happily presented a signed Steve Davis / Network VEKA picture, to show our appreciation, along with a trophy for their win in the pool competition. “On the coach back to Düsseldorf we celebrated with some authentic German beers while Pete Mew of Mews Windows practised a few helpful German phrases... in his thick West Midlands accent! “We rounded the trip off with dinner at the traditional Schumacker restaurant and a night out in Düsseldorf Old Town.

“It was a great chance for members to get together in a light-hearted, social atmosphere, while sharing their ideas and experiences. The trip was a great combination of 'educational' and 'fun' and we've already received some fantastic feedback. Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time and suggestions for next year's 'Network VEKA Tour' are already being discussed!” 01282 473170 ENQUIRY-Card 500 ENQUIRY-Card 501

An ace idea - with the potential to solve the world’s housing shortage An innovative modular building system which has the potential to plug the massive shortfall in low-cost housing and schools, not just in Britain but across the world, is using expanded polystyrene (now known across Europe as airpop™) at the centre of its unique patented design.

In its most recent project, the Acermetric building system has just slashed costs and build-time at a London primary school where a twostorey multi-purpose 466m2 “Centre of Excellence was assembled in around 13 weeks on site by just four builders lifting panels by hand and installing the elements with a single tool! Coppice Primary School in Chigwell, which provided independent funding for the project, said “the new Centre of Excellence is a unique and bespoke provision that houses two additional classrooms, a computing suite, art studio and science laboratory to accommodate our subject specialisms. This has been a huge success with our pupils, being able to educate them in a purpose built provision. The wider community also benefits from using the art studio in our Centre of Excellence. The Acermetric system is patentprotected in twenty countries worldwide with another forty

countries recognising patent conformance. It comprises a range of interlocking panels each of which is effectively a sandwich of grey eps with the option of the outer board material specified according to the building needs. Together with window and door cassettes, the full range of elements extends to around forty shape options which, when locked together and linked to patented roof support beams and columns, allow more than a million combinations of high-strength, threedimensionally stable structures – a ‘lego-like’ system capable of creating a building of virtually any shape, size or design. According to the company’s calculations, the system could easily accommodate buildings up to ten storeys high, is suited to areas prone to ground movement and even to earthquake risk, and has undergone stringent UKAS testing covering strength, fire resistance, acoustic protection, thermal insulation and longevity. The whole idea was the brainchild of UK engineering design and R&D veteran David Appleford who cut his teeth in the deep sea oil exploration sector. According to David, his system owes a great deal to the eps foam which forms the core of the panels. “The grey eps at the heart of our Acermetric panels gives us many advantages – light weight, rigidity, excellent insulation, high acoustic performance and good fire protection. Cheaper diesel is not the answer

SterlingOSB ‘Big30’Van winner announced September proved to be a sterling month for one lucky Sussex-based builder, who recently learned that he had become the winner of a brand new van as part of Norbord’s 30th anniversary campaign for SterlingOSB. To celebrate SterlingOSB being the building industry’s wood panel of choice for 30 years, this year Norbord launched a national anniversary campaign. Builders were given the chance to win a selection of prizes each month, together worth a huge £70,000, culminating in the giveaway of a brand new Vauxhall Movano van. Over 5,500 people entered the competition since it launched in March, with a total of 91 prizes dished out to the lucky winners. Neiall Mullery’s name was drawn in the competition’s fourth and final draw on 31st August, making him the lucky recipient of a new Vauxhall Movano van.

Cheaper diesel makes comparison between diesel and petrol vans increasingly complex, but that misses the key issue in fleet procurement according to The Fuelcard People. Steve Clarke, group marketing manager, has pointed out that day-to-day fuel pricing is not the main factor to be considered. “Pump pricing is a red herring,” he said, “because nobody need pay that much. Whether a van or other LCV runs on diesel or petrol, most should be refuelling at up to 4p per litre below pump prices with fuel cards. Whole-life costing, or total cost of ownership, has to be the key issue in van comparisons.” He was commenting on the news that diesel remains cheaper than petrol on most forecourts. He said, “Diesel became cheaper than petrol this summer, for the first time since 2001. Better mpg figures for diesel might suggest an obvious choice, but that misses the point. Unless you consider every cost during a van’s lifetime, any comparison will be meaningless.” ENQUIRY-Card 102 ENQUIRY-Card 103 ENQUIRY-Card 101

do not allow walls to breathe enough, which damages the fabric of a building, whereas fully breathable paint enables walls to self regulate their moisture, preventing damage. “Silicate masonry paint offers a proven, easy to use alternative that gives the same

breathability as limewash but is far superior in terms of longevity. Its stated lifespan is up to 15 years but we expect many applications to last much longer. We know of buildings painted with silicate paint more than 80 years ago, which are still in excellent condition.” Earthborn's unique Ecopro Silicate Masonry System comprises a primer and paint which, together, form a chemical bond with the underlying mineral substrate. The result is a very hard wearing, water and weather resistant barrier but it is also highly breathable. Being water based, it is VOC free and environmentally friendly. The system can be used on any porous mineral surface such as stone, brick, concrete, harling, plaster and render. It gives a crisp, classic matt finish that does not yellow with time and is algae and mould resistant. It is available in 12 standard shades and customised colours can be produced by Earthborn stockists.

Treatment with Earthborn’s high performance Ecopro Silicate Mansonry Paint will maintain this listed building's appearance for many years ENQUIRY-Card 516

Cavity Wall Gable Abutments Straight and Curved Cavity Tray Solutions Forming a weather proof relationship between a sloping roof and a curved cavity wall requires a threedimensional approach, and Yeovil-based Cavity Trays Ltd manufactures a specialist product to do the job. Cavity Trays Ltd is the only UK cavity tray manufacturer awarded European Technical Approval and its tray designed for use on stepped and staggered sloping abutments is called the Type X. It features an adjustable cavity upstand ensuring cavity width compatibility, and comes complete with an attached and ready-shaped flashing which is ready for immediate dressing. The tray is designed for use

in straight cavity walls, but where convex or concave (on plan) walls occur, a range of curved trays now also provide a preformed warranted approach: The pitch of an abutting roof may be constant, but where it meets a curved wall the angle of intersection changes throughout the slope. For a brief moment at the commencement of the slope the intersection may be horizontal, but as the wall turns the angle changes and those changes continue until the top. The question of how to best protect the structure against wet penetration and externally flash the intersection is answered by using preformed curved cavitrays. Each tray is individually and

compositely computer calculated and numbered to take into account the arc of the wall, the masonry coursing, and its position within the slope. The builder commences with tray number one at the base of the slope, and progressively builds in each subsequently numbered tray as each course is laid. The resultant stepped arrangement provides protective arrestment of penetrating water within the wall linked with overlapping flashings to the exterior of the wall. The flashings provide far greater protection against wind-driven water-wash than conventional stepped running flashings - an important consideration given a curved surface must accommodate an accentuation of water wash created by wind deflection into and across its arced surface. Curved Type X cavitrays by Cavity Trays of Yeovil are described within its latest Technical Manual – available upon request. ENQUIRY-Card 519

And breathe ... Wykamol brings a Modern Method of Construction treatment to the age-old problem of damp. Restoring an old property is all about understanding its environment and how this affects the materials it was built with. If we can take time out in today’s pressured workplace to truly understand this it becomes a relatively simple task to resolve damp problems. The official definition of an old building used to be "Built before 1919" but that did not really explain what made them different from modern buildings. That is that they are "solid-walled structures, built using breathable materials, which need to breathe". Likewise, breathability is about allowing

moisture to enter and leave a building’s fabric without hindrance so that it will never build up. Old properties were typically built with stone, soft brick or lime mortar, all of which are subject to movement due to heat and seasonal changes. Hard or dense renders were first used to help keep a building dry, externally and internally, after the Second World War when cement and gypsum plaster became widely available. But while they may have performed a function then it is quite a different story now. An unfortunate consequence of the Government’s focus on improving the thermal performance of buildings is that many older properties are being overclad with hard or dense renders or treated with impervious coatings which

just exacerbate a damp problem. Hard or dense renders are just that – hard - so they crack under pressure. Water is trapped, the walls outside and inside become even damper and the house becomes even more thermally inefficient. Just like Gortex enables sportspeople, adventurers and explorers to perform to the maximum, breathability along with water resistance is the key to preserving the structure and aesthetics of an old property. Wykamol has developed a dry lining membrane which does just that. Dampstop Mesh is manufactured from HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) with a welded mesh that isolates dampness and salts and creates a dry surface for builders to (soft) render or dot and dab

onto. Supremely simple to install, the lightweight membrane is cut to the height of the wall using a Stanley knife and fixed to it by drilling a 8mm hole through it and hammering home a fixing plug at centres to suit. The surface is then ready for direct rendering or dabbing for plasterboard to be skimmed. There is minimum waiting around waiting for it to dry which can sometimes take months – hard or dense renders typically taking an inch a month to dry out and while that takes place only emulsions can be used for decoration, to allow the wall to breath. Not only is the system exponentially quicker but it is also cleaner (as there is no sand/cement to be mixed) and healthier (no powders in the atmosphere – a particular bonus when converting basements). Because the membrane prevents cold bridging, the days when wet dabs onto bare brick would penetrate plasterboard and leave unsightly damp dots over a wall are long gone. ENQUIRY-Card 521

The ABC of DPC Rising damp is a problem that affects buildings each year, particularly older houses where the original damp proof course has been damaged over time. The SikaMur® Damp-Proofing System is the effective three step solution against rising damp, consisting of specially selected limestone aggregates, cements and air entraining additives.

Accelerated ageing sees Stormdry get BBA blessing Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream from Safeguard Europe – the UK’s leading specialist in damp- and waterproofing, and masonry repair solutions – has undergone accelerated ageing tests as part of its certification by the British Board of Agrément. As a result, its BBA certificate states that will remain effective as a masonry water repellent for 25 years. Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream both prevents rain penetration and boosts thermal resistance because masonry insulates more effectively when dry: bricks have twice the thermal resistance when dry rather than wet. The product is easily applied by either brush

The SikaMur® Damp-Proofing system contains three parts, SikaMur® InjectoCream-100, SikaMur® Dry and SikaMur® Finish all of which are moisture vapour permeable, allowing the wall to dry out and prevent efflorescence damage, improve thermal properties and protect against condensation. The first step in the system is SikaMur® InjectoCream-100, a concentrated silane-based injectable damp proof course, containing more than 80% active ingredients which have a strong effect against rising damp. Secondly is SikaMur® Dry, a ready-mixed, highly breathable mortar for rehabilitating moist masonry, which promotes evaporation of retained moisture, or roller and will cure colourlessly to match the original finish within 12 hours. The cream penetrates far more deeply than conventional liquid applied water repellents – up to 12mm in flettons – so that it can bridge cracks in the masonry more effectively and it has a much greater life expectancy, as shown in the BBA certification. Developed to give specifiers and developers the assurance that a product is fit for purpose, an Agrément Certificate is only awarded to products that have successfully negotiated a raft of rigorous assessments that inspect every element of design, manufacture and installation. These include laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and inspections of production. In the case of Stormdry, the BBA particularly examined water repellency, condensation risk, freeze/ thaw resistance and UV resistance and found that it resists the uptake of water into masonry substrates without increasing the risk of condensation and resists both the effects of freeze/thaw cycling and UV light. So now Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream has been certified ‘as being fit for its intended use’ – a breathable remedial masonry waterrepellent barrier for use on domestic and non-domestic buildings on brick, mortar, sandstone and concrete substrates. holding salt inside plaster while eliminating laitance and mildew. A render coat of SikaMur® Finish is applied as the final stage giving a cement free, highly breathable layer with the ability to affectively diffuse water vapour. SikaMur® InjectoCream-100 is available in 300ml cartridges and 600ml foil packs and can be applied using a standard caulking gun. SikaMur® Dry and SikaMur® Finish are both available in 25kg sacks, ready to use with only water needing to be added. The combination of these 3 products are

the ideal system to protect against future problems so - prepare, inject, coat and finish!! Physical – a cut above the rest For many people involved in the construction industry, particularly those handling refurbishment works, the thought of a failed DPC or the fact that a damp course does not exist usually brings to mind a chemical remedy. However, Dampcoursing’s physical insertion DPC is far more effective – as a BRE report states. In its Digest 245, the Building Research Establishment confirms that a physical dpc is the only completely sure method to overcome the problem of rising damp. Dampcoursing is confident enough in its technique to offer a 50 year guarantee. Favoured by many housing associations, councils, property developers, builders, and individual home owners across the country, the physical insertion method can be employed on brick and stone walls (or a combination of the two materials), measuring up to 1m thick. Bespoke cutting gear is used to a slot through the wall. If a particularly large stone is encountered, it is removed and

then replaced once the DPC has been inserted. The thickness of the cutting blade creates the precise opening for the insertion of a physical DPC along with the necessary bedding mortar – which is placed in the slot that has been created. The DPC material itself is taken to site and cut to meet the width demands of each individual project. The entire process is then repeated, 900 mm at a time, and before long the property is enjoying the benefits of a physical DPC. Once the mortar has dried, it is a simple task of repointing the length of the work to create a finished job that is neat and tidy, without adversely affecting the traditional look of the building. New tests on safety flooring with ‘real world’ commercial kitchen contaminants highlight the need for tougher standards, says Peter Daulby, Altro’s Technical Services Manager. The commercial kitchen can be a dangerous place. Oil evaporates into the air and settles on the floor when it cools – requiring constant cleaning to prevent a slippery surface. Small spills like milk or flour could cause a very real slip hazard. A busy lunch hour would mean a lot of oil and cooking ingredients on the floor, and not enough time to keep the floor clean and hazard-free at all times. The law requires that employers ensure the health and safety of all employees, which is why safety flooring is a popular choice in commercial kitchens. We put safety flooring to a real world test, using a variety of common contaminants found in a commercial kitchen. The standard Pendulum Test is often used to test safety flooring in the UK. Wet flooring that measures PTV ≥36 translates to a one in a million chance of slipping and is classed as having a low slip potential. The contaminant used for this test is water – perfectly suitable for most areas, but not commercial kitchens.

Tougher targets for commercial kitchen flooring

We used the standard PTV pendulum test BS7976 to test a range of typical kitchen contaminants, using three of our safety floors, all classed as having a low slip potential. This table shows the risk of slipping on the safety floors we tested. Altro Stronghold 30 R12 PTV ≥55

All the floors performed well with some common contaminants, but when it came to vegetable oil and greasy washing up water, only Altro Stronghold 30 with the very highest slip resistance maintained a one in a million chance of slipping. In commercial kitchens our expert opinion is that flooring with PTV≥36, R10 is not recommended. Your chosen flooring needs to be able to perform against wet and dry contaminants and provide sustained lifetime slip resistance.

Introducing Dunlop’s new ProCover Uncoupling Mat – the fail-safe floor tiling solution Discovering cracks in a new tiling installation is a tradesman’s worst nightmare, which is why Dunlop has launched the innovative ProCover Uncoupling Mat system providing complete protection against failures. ProCover gives tradesman the confidence to tile onto difficult floors at risk from stresses and lateral movement by acting as a flexible buffer layer

between tile and floor, protecting against the different rates of contraction and expansion experienced by the floor and tile layer depending on moisture and

temperature. This is a particular problem for floors such as new sand and cement screeds, underfloor heating and timber floors which have previously required overlaying with plywood. Without an uncoupling mat, tiles can crack and de-bond as the background moves, potentially costing time and money in repair and recompense. ProCover is easy to install, comes in handy five metre rolls, and has premarked grid-lines for effortless cutting. It can also be butt-jointed with no overlap, meaning no tape is needed. Furthermore, this innovative product is only 1mm thick and super-slim, preventing excessive height build-up, and comes with a unique 10 year

guarantee when used as part of a suitable system of Dunlop tile adhesive and grout. Debi Boulton, brand manager at Dunlop, said: “By using the ProCover Uncoupling Mat, tradesman can tile onto difficult surfaces in confidence, safe in the knowledge that the system will protect against unwanted movement, stresses and strains that could cause disastrous failures. “So why not throw away your plywood overlays and try ProCover today.” For more information visit ENQUIRY-Card 528

Hot water needs exceed heating needs The heating needs of modern dwellings have been vastly reduced thanks to improvement in insulation of new build, driven by Government directives designed to cut energy use and reduce CO2 emissions, such as the Code for Sustainable Homes. However, the demand for instant hot water has not abated; if anything, with more bathrooms being incorporated into new houses, demand has increased. Tony Gittings, Managing Director at water heater manufacturer Rinnai believes the situation is polarised. “The heating requirements of modern air-tight houses are now greatly reduced. It is time for specifiers, architects and system designers to have a major re-think on how the address hot water provision, now and in the future.

“Eight out of 10 installers will still install the biggest combi unit they can find to ensure hot water needs are met – basically using it as a direct water heater – payback is the heat generated for heating. We must now look at demand for hot water differently and treat heating differently. “Before energy saving legislation came in, a household’s energy requirement would be typically rated at 38kW whereas now it may be as low as 7-10kW. Traditionally an installer would calculate the heating load then add 10,000bth to get the hot water figure,” says Gittings. “For example, underfloor heating, which is rapidly becoming the norm, operates at lower temperatures eliminating the need for a big hot water storage unit to satisfy the needs of feeding large radiators as well as hot water. Now hot water needs

New Terrier Brochure – Hub of Insightful Information The company behind the UK’s leading brand of radiator valves, Pegler Yorkshire, has launched a new Terrier brochure designed to not only provide product information but to include system design considerations, benefits and cost savings of TRVs, installation instructions and flow charts. The new style brochure is created with installers in mind, the information included offers a comprehensive overview of valves, how and why they should be incorporated into a heating system and what savings they can provide homeowners. “It’s not just a product catalogue, we have included some great bits of information that are there to help installers make the right choice as to the types of valves suitable for the different heating systems out there,” said Sindar Singh, climate control market manager for Pegler Yorkshire. are top priority – technology has advanced so much we can now look at heat pumps for satisfying heating requirements. For example, Gittings says when he visited Sweden four to five years ago, a heat pump manufacturer explained; “In old Swedish houses they had double glazed windows and now they use triple glazed insulation. The level of insulation has increased and heat loss has dropped so the heat input needed is less BUT demand for hot water has not decreased.” Gittings argues that the question the industry should be asking now is how to generate hot water quickly and efficiently? “It is certainly not by housing a 250 litre cylinder in a cupboard that has to be heated 24/7, 365 days a year to ensure hot water is always available, when a continuous flow hot water system would

Introducing the new Infinity 480BF Charlton and Jenrick are pleased to announce the launch of the Infinity 480BF to expand the adaptable range of rear vented balanced flue gas fires it now offers. The size of the 480BF means that it will fit into the majority of fireplace designs available for sale in the UK and offers improved aesthetics over traditional 16” inch fires. The 480BF achieves an extremely impressive net efficiency of 86% from an economically modest 2.6kW input. The fire offers a great flame picture and exceptional warmth in the room. The ceramic glass viewing area of the Infinity 480BF is the same size as the 480FL, which means the new fire is compatible with the Infinity fireplace package designs already available, including the ever popular Beckford & Stokesay suites.

do a better job. “A continuous flow hot water system is the best option for all types of domestic dwelling through to office buildings, hotels and leisure parks and caravan sites. With a continuous flow water heater you can never run out of hot water no matter how many individual baths or showers are taken simultaneously. Why waste energy and money heating water for a number of hours for a brief period of use? “The only downside, if you can call it that, is the household would lose its airing cupboard but what is the point of drying clothes and then keeping them warm? It only proves how inefficient cylinders are anyway constantly leaking heat, especially the older ones,” he says. “And, even if you do not use any hot water, a standard cylinder will lose a maximum of 3kW of heat a day as a

Omnie round source heat pumps

The redevelopment of a former lock keeper’s cottage in Somerset, being replaced by a 850 square metre spacious modern family home, is making use of two ground source heat pumps from Omnie to provide not just space heating. The design of the building is very contemporary and offers large open plan areas which is ideally suited for UFH and low temperature heating. The groundworks phase of the project saw half a dozen 200 metre long runs of 32 mm crack resistant PE pipe laid in parallel trenches approximately one metre deep. These were connected up to a 6 port subterranean manifold at the edge of the field and then a back to the plant room in the house via a 25 metre long stretch of 63 mm pipe, laid beneath the access road. Charged with a glycol mix, the extensive L-shaped array will capture sufficient low grade heat throughout the year to allow the two high efficiency heat pumps to generate the output to service all the property’s needs: space heating being delivered via zoned Omnie’s underfloor loops. standing loss. All cylinders suffer from this to some extent and it actually equates, over a year, to 1095kW of energy wasted; a big hole in the pocket for the benefit of having a cylinder taking up space. If you also look at the gas saving alone it equates to 101.8m³ of gas used.” With a continuous flow system the only time you are using energy is when there is a demand, in other words it is only burning gas when a tap or shower is being run. Design improvements by leading gas water heater manufacturers such as Rinnai have increased heat efficiency of hot-water appliances, from 80% to 95%, while decreasing gas consumption by around 14%. HOT WATER HEATING calculating lifetime costings

“Any specifier, building owner or tenant looking to purchase and install a new hot water system needs to take a long hard look beyond the initial price to the efficiencies in operation that will keep running costs low and speedy payback on the investment in the equipment.” So says Rinnai’s Chris Goggin, things potentially less costly in Rinnai manufactures and supplies the best in class, who continues: “The benefits of certain environments.” efficient Infinity energy efficient hot water Rinnai’s Infinity range of energy provision speak for themselves continuous flow condensing continuous flow condensing but building owners are often gas fired water heaters are gas fired water heater range. held back by worries about the included in the Government’s This ‘tankless’ hot water capital cost of buying this new Energy Technology List (ETL) delivery offers huge ongoing making them eligible for tax financial benefits to building equipment. breaks to cushion the initial owners and tenants. Secondly, scheme*. “Inclusion on the list means water is only heated when it is that the Government needed, and for the time the recognises the appliances meet outlet is running, this can cut “It is important to look beyond – or exceed in Rinnai’s case – fuel costs ‘dramatically’. Goggin comments: “By using tried and tested energy saving technology, building owners can slash running costs and reduce embedded carbon, a vital consideration for businesses looking to meet CSR requirements and future legislation. “The payback on the investment over the 10 years plus life of a single unit can be measured not in years, but in months. What, then, is the sense in buying a cheaper, less efficient unit when running costs will soon outstrip any benefit of buying cheaper? There have been instances whereby commercial installations have seen energy savings up to 35% within the

first 3 months.” The comprehensive Rinnai Infinity condensing range of continuous flow water heaters offers specifiers and end users a system that guarantees a constant flow of safe hot water at precisely the chosen temperature. Operated via an easy to use built-in digital control system, the water heater provides near mains pressure flow for as long as is necessary at the outlets. For many commercial operations this solution is the best of all possible options; stored hot water systems, by virtue of their design, find it difficult to cope with modern demands for hot water, as the recovery times are more often than not much longer than the period of use." Buy a Rinnai Solo & get £1000 worth of ancillary products

Rinnai, the leading brand name in hot water heating units, is offering over £1000 worth of ancillary products on its latest innovation, the Infinity Solo Re-Circulator water heater. The Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX condensing water heater is the first product to combine the advanced technology of Rinnai’s wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one compact footprint. The offer is open to the first 25 respondents who place an order by contacting the company direct on – tel no: 01928 531 870/email; The design parameters of the Infinity Solo enables designers, installers and

engineers to benefit from unique Rinnai technology in applications not previously possible. For instance, the Rinnai Solo will incorporate both 35kW and 54kW appliances, ensuring sites with a smaller gas meter can utilise such technologies. The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances that exist in today’s market. The cylinder is stainless steel, dramatically reducing the weight compared to glass lined models – creating easier transportation and installation. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders available also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), which means the customer pays less to maintain the heat within the tank.

Plumbing Firm Sees Sales Soar With Water Treatment Leaflet By proactively promoting the benefits of best practice water treatment to potential and existing customers, highly regarded London-based plumbing firm, WPJ Services Ltd, has seen a significant increase in the take-up of water treatment services, boosting turnover and customer satisfaction as a result. The forward-thinking company has been utilising Sentinel’s popular ‘Homeowner’s Guide to Water Treatment’ leaflets to initiate and guide conversations with homeowners about the cost, energy and hassle-saving advantages of water treatment. WPJ Services reports that this approach has helped to convert around 70% of customers to its water treatment services, with more than half going for a powerflush. WPJ Services Ltd, which boasts a team of 26 plumbing and heating engineers, customer service and office staff, is based

in Battersea and provides a full range of heating and plumbing services to hundreds of clients throughout South West London. To increase business, in April 2015 the firm began using Sentinel’s Homeowner Leaflet, which can be ordered for free

via the Sentinel Hub on complete with plumbing company branding and contact details. “We immediately saw how the Sentinel Homeowner Leaflet could be applied as an effective sales tool, and requested a

The Infinity brand carries the widest range of condensing water heaters on the market today with the most impressive efficiencies in operation, leading the field in technological innovation.

Unfortunately, choosing to skip proper water treatment ENQUIRY-Card 545

is not only bad for homeowners, it can affect our business and reputation when those untreated systems experience breakdowns due to corrosion,” he continued. In an effort to more easily and quickly educate homeowners about the problems associated with untreated water, as well as the advantages of best practice water treatment, WPJ Services’ engineers include Sentinel’s Homeowner Leaflet with every boiler quote and use it as a means to initiate a conversation about the company’s water treatment services. Sentinel’s Homeowner Leaflet explains, via simple layman’s terms and clever illustrations, the potential problems caused by untreated water, such as cold spots, noise, potential for breakdowns, increased energy bills and loss of boiler warranties. Industry statistics, such as ‘approximately 87% of boiler call outs are to systems without correct water treatment’, are used to highlight the prevalence and costs associated with such problems. It also details the benefits of investing in best practice water treatment, and explains the processes involved. ENQUIRY-Card 546

Benchmarx opens 150th branch with a bang in Wokingham Following a vast and rapid business expansion, Benchmarx Kitchens & Joinery, the trade-only supplier of high quality, pre-assembled kitchens, has opened the doors of its 150th branch in Wokingham, firmly establishing their status as a national kitchen supplier and marking an exciting milestone for the company. The branch, located on Fishponds Road off Molly Millar’s Lane, hosted a busy opening event on Monday 5th October. In attendance were Regional Director Kenny Devlin and the branch team, including Branch Manager Tracy Tandy, who provided a warm welcome to local tradesmen, offering an exclusive £150 upon opening a trade account plus a goody bag and a free breakfast, to tie-in with fundraising in support of the company’s chosen charity partner, Macmillan, and their coffee morning campaign. To further celebrate this milestone and the company’s new location in the Berkshire area, the team cut the official opening ribbon and released 150 balloons into the sky – with one carrying a special tag giving away an AEG coffee machine to the lucky finder. With so much going on in store, the opening was an exciting day for Benchmarx and saw many tradesmen come in branch to find out more on how the kitchen supplier can help save them time and money, opening accounts and enjoying in the celebrations. “We are proud to have reached this important milestone for the business” comments Kenny, “and it’s a testament to the company’s dedication to product delivery, service and

the success we have had over the past couple of years that has led to us opening our 150th branch. This is no mean feat, having expanded from some 80 or so branches in 2013 to now 150 and counting. A broad cross-section of the country is now covered by our competitive straight to trade offer that also works with the homeowner to deliver beautiful kitchens, on time, in full and at a great price. As for Benchmarx Wokingham, it’s establishing itself as the go-to place for local trade professionals.” Branch Manager Tracy, who has over 20 years of experience within the kitchen industry, is looking forward to growing her customer base over the weeks and months ahead. “I joined the business a short while ago with the aim of setting up this new branch and as a team, we are extremely proud of what we have achieved to date. We’ve

had a great response from local tradesmen already and the team is busy fulfilling orders for customers in the area. “We provide all of the kitchen components under one roof to the trade - from cabinets and joinery, to worktops, splashbacks, and appliances - to ensure that the kitchen design and selection process is as straight-forward as possible for the homeowner. Customers are also welcome to come to us direct to see what’s new, before or during their journey with a tradesman to turn their kitchen dreams into a reality. Tracy concludes: “We can also provide exceptional stock guarantees, turnaround time and personal service and we look forward to meeting more of the trade in the area in the very near future.” For further information about Benchmarx, including new kitchen ranges and joinery products, or to visit your nearest branch, visit: ENQUIRY-Card 548

Saniflo talks boilers

Condensating boilers are now the primary form of heating in domestic properties driven, in part, by legislation introduced back in 2005. Whilst much more energy efficient than their back boiler contemporaries there are still building regulations to be aware of when installing condensating boilers; in particular rules regarding the disposal of the acidic waste known as condensate. BS6798:2009 allows condensate drainage pipes to be run either internally or externally or a combination of both. In the majority of cases this is via gravity to a

suitable internal termination point. However, there are cases where installations cannot provide for easy access to a drain and in these circumstances an alternative is to us a condensate pump. Part of the requirement – that can add considerable cost to the job – is for 32mm condensate drainage pipes with runs insulated to Class O and kept to below 3m. In some cases it may actually be more cost-effective to pump. Whilst not a legal requirement; but more an environmental and aesthetic issue, it is often the case that the acidity in condensate can chemically break

down bonds in mortar, brick and concrete if left untreated; leaving unsightly stains on the building exterior. Appropriate forms of neutralisation include in-line units or soakaways with maintained lime chippings both of which require regular top-ups. For boilers with a 200kW output or above a neutraliser is mandatory if the waste is to be returned to public drains. For more information on the full range please visit the website on ENQUIRY-Card 549

Sanicondens Best With a 2 litre tank this top of the range unit has an integrated PH neutralising granule tray to adjust the PH of the acidic water from the boiler. Fitted as standard with 2 floats – one to control the pump and the other to control an alarm - it is also suitable for use with a BM System.

Sanicondens Eco - With its 1 litre tank the Eco has been designed for the contract market to work with boilers that do not require a neutralising tray. Each unit can pump condensate up to 342l per hour at distances up to 4.5m vertically and 50 m horizontally.

Sanicondens Pro & Plus - These two popular models feature four or two entry points respectively and are ideal for applications where a neutralising tray is not required. They have a working temperature of 35°C but can handle up to 80°C for short periods.

Sanineutral A stand-alone product that works with or without a pump the Sanineutral will neutralise the acidic condensate from a boiler before the waste is drained away protecting pipework from damage and minimising environmental damage from acidic water waste.

Meeting requirements for the Government Approved Document M of the Building Regulations 2010 is a moral obligation and should never be a ‘tick box’ exercise, according to Sharon McKenna, Sales & Marketing Director of specialist supplier Barwood Products. Passionate about supplying products that meet the needs of disabled users, Sharon believes there can sometimes be a tendency or temptation for contractors and installers to source lower cost products that might compromise the integrity of the Doc M Pack and run the risk of failing to meet the approved document requirements. “The whole point of the practical guidance is about providing public toilet facilities for disabled users that make it as easy for them to go to the loo as it is for nondisabled people. It’s about dignity and there should be no compromise. The Approved Document was made after careful consideration of the user’s needs and exists to protect less mobile people.

Jallatte Boot Saves Mechanic from Severely Broken Leg Renowned French premium safety footwear brand Jallatte’s high-performing safety boot has saved a man who fell from a tree from serious injury to his foot and leg. Chris White had been standing on a platform 30 feet up a tree cutting off some branches using a chain saw. As he cut through one branch, it started to crack and appeared ready to fall. “I removed my chainsaw and switched it safely off, but the branch started to crack upwards instead of going in the direction I had expected. I had nowhere to go,” he explains. Chris tried to get out of the way, but the branch, which shot down past his shoulder, unsteadied him, causing him to lose his footing. “I had to find

somewhere to put my foot, and as it went down about two feet below into the ‘V’ of another branch, my ankle turned over in my boot.” By the time Chris got to hospital, his leg was bruised from his toenails to above his knee, while his ankle was twice its normal size. “My injuries could have been so much more serious,” says Chris. “My fantastic Jallatte boot saved me from much worse damage and prevented my foot and ankle breaking.” “None of the doctors I saw at

the hospital could believe that my ankle was not broken when they cut my boot off, but Xrays showed that it wasn’t, thanks to my boots.” Chris is a mechanic by trade, running his own engineering company, and has always used Jallatte boots in his business. “Jallatte boots are very soft and very easy to wear,” he says. “Often new boots chafe and rub, but you can put Jallatte boots straight on and get on with the job, so that’s why I love them.” Chris is a very happy Jallatte

customer. “My boots have always been Jallatte and always will,” he concludes. “The lesson I have learnt is that it pays to buy quality safety footwear, to help you in the event of an accident.” As a gesture of goodwill, Jallatte is sending Chris a new pair of Jallatte boots, one size larger than the ones he wore before the accident, free of charge. Garador rolls out a new look Britain’s top garage door manufacturer has completely redesigned its fleet of delivery vehicles. With clean lines and a fresh mid-blue and white styling, Garador’s lorries now reflect its modern image; which complements Garador’s leadership in

not only garage doors, but also in service and delivery. The vehicles are fitted with automatic lifting and carefully designed secure

sections to ensure garage doors arrive at their destination in perfect condition. They also provide a telephone notification service, where a member of the Garador transport team calls the customer 7 days before any products are due to be delivered, and again 24 hours before hand, to help them plan for when the door arrives. By doing this, Garador hopes to save it’s customers time and money, enabling them to plan more effectively for the fitting of their new door. “We are delighted with the new look of our delivery fleet,” said Garador’s managing director Simon Hipgrave. “Garador has recently invested in new door designs and technology, and we felt it was time to invest in our delivery fleet. The upgraded lorries, with their new colouring and clear, clean signage,

Do you know your fire doors facts?

Group has found that 15 percent of currently installed domestic garage doors are either unsafe or have failed to comply with legally required testing procedures. In its findings, the report highlighted faults such as unprotected roller mechanisms and deficient fixings as common occurrences. To meet the safety needs of consumers, Henderson is introducing its premium range of sectional garage doors, Henderson Superior 42 and Henderson Superior +42. The motorised systems are designed to provide users with protection from injury with the presence of covered rollers, rail runners, tension springs and a cable guide positioned on the inside. Both models feature ball bearing-mounted rollers, offering a smooth and quiet operation. The garage doors also include vented rubber seals at the base to keep the inside of properties watertight all year round, providing excellent weather resistance.

Door-Stop, the UK’s leading composite door supplier, has launched a series of fact sheets helping to promote awareness around the correct certification, legal obligations and accurate installation of fire doors. In an effort to help reduce safety hazards to tenants for poorly specified and/or installed fire doors, the fact sheets are also intended to prevent the risk of prosecution. On average there are over 174 building fires every day, yet despite this staggering figure, fire precaution does not appear to be top of mind for all building owners and installers. Having launched its contemporary range of fire rated entrance door sets for flats and apartments in September, Door-Stop is now looking to raise awareness of the risks involved by not accurately specifying and installing fire doors. Premdor Launches into Unchartered Trend-led Territory with Portfolio its New Luxury Veneer Door Collection Leading UK door manufacturer, Premdor, has launched an extensive luxury veneer door Collection that sees it striking out into unchartered trend-led territory to offer designers, specifiers and architects luxuriously designed pieces with no compromise on quality. Created by a team which took its cues from headline interior and catwalk trends, Portfolio by Premdor is at the forefront of current design trends and blends craftsmanship and innovative technology, with a highly-attractive array of colours, textures and styles. Created around four inspirational themed ranges, ‘Natural’, ‘Exotic’, ‘Contemporary’ and ‘Classic’, the Collection has been designed to complement a host of residential and commercial

environments. Catherine Horsfall, senior product manager at Premdor, said: “We wanted to develop a truly trend-led range of luxury veneer doors which designers, specifiers and architects would be able to incorporate into their latest designs in ways which genuinely complement and enhance them. The resulting Collection - Portfolio by Premdor - has totally exceeded our expectations. We conducted vast amounts of trends research and analysis to

get this just right as Portfolio is by far the biggest new product launch we’ve undertaken for years. We’re really proud of this Collection and we think Portfolio is going to have a major impact in the door industry.” Made in the UK utilising veneers engineered in Italy via sustainable sources, Portfolio blends quality craftsmanship and Premdor’s innovative Veneer Match technology to deliver veneer doors with consistent colour and grain patterns, whilst still allowing for the unique variations found in natural veneer doors. Portfolio doors are never identical but always consistent. Premdor is committed to manufacturing excellence encompassing performance, delivery and flexibility. Each door is crafted with a solid core structure, and the Collection offers many new glazed options

and a variety of fire door options, all certified by the BWF. The Four Ranges in the Portfolio Collection Natural - Bringing the beauty of the natural world inside. Homely yet fashion-led, it offers the same stunning qualities of natural wood, while exuding understated style. Featuring Scandinavian Horizontal and the Scandinavian Two Stile - two doors with a similarly luxurious look this range would suit traditional spas or intimate restaurants equally well. Exotic - Two doors offering bold, fiery shades and tempting textures. Both deliver a dramatic twist for any space. The sleek, sophistication of Wenge Vertical provides a stunning finish for high end apartments or bars and clubs. Ebony Vertical offers decadent

elegance for exclusive spaces, whether a beautiful domestic kitchen, or a stylish hotel. Contemporary - Clean lines and fresh design. It takes inspiration from all things modern. When added to a slick, city apartment or stylish bar, the doors - there are nine styles in the range really come into their own. The doors fall under one of three sub-ranges, including ‘Mocha’, ‘Charcoal Grey’ and ‘Light Grey’. The neutral shade of grey - a key impact colour currently across numerous interiors - is used to great effect in what is a cutting-edge range. In the Mocha range, a Mocha Horizontal grain door offers warm, rich tones for a sleek and soft finish to add sophistication to any space. Charcoal Grey comprising a Vertical grain door, a Horizontal grain door and a Horizontal grain door with striking horizontal black inlays takes its inspiration from the catwalk and offers neutral, yet dramatic shades for creating amazing workspaces, or highend dwellings. Combining seamlessly with many interiors to create contemporary interest is the Light Grey range including a plain Horizontal grain or Two Stile option, the choice of black vertical or horizontal inlays or an impressive Black and Grey Two Stile option. A simple, classic grey finish can be paired with a colourful palette for a striking look, or a dramatic statement piece featuring a black centre panel to complement a monochrome ambiance can create an impactful entrance for apartments or hotel bedrooms. John Fredericks Plastics partners with Halo to develop exclusive offering: Rustique 3 As a long-standing fabricator of Halo PVC-U systems, Huddersfieldbased John Fredericks Plastics was pleased to partner with the industry-leading profile supplier to develop their new and exclusive triple glazed solution. John Fredericks' MD Steve Darkins explains: “We're extremely proud of the new 'Rustique 3' system we have unveiled in partnership with Halo. It has received significant investment and spent a long time in development to ensure that it would meet the needs of the industry. “We listened to feedback from customers and colleagues and, following the

Triple Glazing Debate last year, we created what we feel is the ideal profile system for triple glazing applications. “It has been generally agreed that, if triple glazing was to bring real, tangible benefits over double glazing then the optimum unit size should be 44mm overall, which is why we are so pleased to offer Rustique 3 which will accommodate a 44mm unit and still provide pleasing

Alongside the curtain walling, SEH also installed more than 130 windows in the 34 apartments in the Greenlaw Court block fabricated in the flush fitting REHAU TOTAL70R fully reversible window system. NorDan windows let in maximum light for Peabody Trust An urban social housing project in Whitechapel London, which provides “comfort and happiness” for its residents, is a finalist in the RIBA Stirling architecture prize awarded this month. The RIBA Stirling Award, is the UK’s most prestigious architecture prize, and is awarded to the architects of the building which has made the biggest contribution to the evolution of architecture in the past year.

High performance aluminium clad timber windows from NorDan UK Ltd, a market leader for timber windows in social housing, contribute to the buildings air tightness, helping to keep heating bills to a minimum. Scandinavian timber and alu clad timber windows from NorDan, are proved to have a very long life cycle aand contribute to the buildings Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. This £2.3m project, was designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects, main contractor Sandwood Design and Build. This small block of only 13 mixed size units fills a gap site which has served as a car park since the 1940s,when a former tenement block was bombed during the Second World War. The design of the block takes cues from the typical Peabody housing blocks, designed by Henry Darbishire in the 1860s. The new block reflects the massing and characteristics of the existing estate blocks. Deep, white reveals around windows and balconies contrast with the brick facade and provide sufficient space for planters on the cills. The balconies are positioned within the building envelope, so as to retain a flat brick facade in

keeping with the existing blocks. These balconies have openings on two sides to allow a maximum amount of daylight into the living rooms through their NorDan sliding patio doors. The apartments were designed to have the living rooms at the ends of the blocks – most units receive light from three sides, with generous covered balconies. The practice has ensured that central circulation space is generous, with natural light and ventilation. The winding stair has a central void to provide additional light and an important visual connection between the floors. The need for a ventilation shaft has been removed by positioning the required fire lobbies on an external wall with opening windows. At least half of the thirteen 1,2,3 and 4-bed units will be affordable dwellings. ENQUIRY-Card 571

Master range of external doors now available Vufold, the leading British manufacturing retailer of bi-fold doors has announced that it’s ever popular Master range of external doors is now available in a grey finish on its 1.8, 2.1, 2.4, 2.7, 3 and 3.6 metre wide door sets.* The Master range is manufactured using a 'slow grown' hardwood core and has 54mm thick doors that are finished off with hardwood veneer that has a crisp three coat factory-applied finish. Classy stainless steel hardware completes this durable and totally affordable product. The Master Bi-fold doors come with slim stiles to give customers a bigger glass area that

affords more light into the home. Up until now the Master range of bi-fold doors has only been available in a crisp brilliant white but customer demand has lead the Cheshire based company to add an alternative grey colour to three quarters of the range. Marketing Manager for Vufold, Kerry Murphy-Kaytan says the introduction of the new colour range could pave the

way for even more changes if it is warranted by customer demand; “We have listened to our customers and responded with the new range of grey finishes in all of our Master door sets up to and including 3.6 metres wide. If customers tell us that they want even more options we very well may start producing the Master in our 4.2 and 4.8 metre wide sets as well.”

Comar 7P.i Folding Sliding Door System (FSD)

Two new products enhance Schueco’s sliding door offering

Brio throws a curve

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems are delighted to launch their thermally broken Comar 7P.i Folding Sliding Door (FSD). Smooth operation and solutions to meet the design brief, the aluminium Comar 7P.i Folding/Sliding Door (FSD) system offers a myriad of possibilities for commercial or residential projects. Comar 7P.i FSD provides a versatile moveable wall that allows space and light into any project. Even in the winter months the glazed facade offers light as well as keeping the building insulated through the trademarked Comar 7P.i thermal break technology. By merging aesthetically pleasing features such as robust, yet slim, aluminium profiles with feature-laden operational gearing from the Comar 7P.i FSD system, you have the capability to design open-in or open-out stacking doors, folding and sliding from the top or the bottom rollers.

New from leading sustainable building envelope specialist, Schueco UK, are two products, SmartClose and SmartStop, that underline Schueco’s commitment to innovation, operational safety and engineering excellence. Developed for use with Schueco’s range of sliding door systems, both products make the sliding vent easier to operate. SmartClose makes the closing action effortless by converting the energy generated by the initial pull on the sliding vent into momentum that carries the vent smoothly along the length of its track until its final soft insertion into the frame. The action is similar to the softclosing doors and drawers found in many contemporary kitchens. In addition, Schueco SmartClose makes closing the door quieter and safer and also obviates the possibility of damage to the frame by the vent being slammed shut.

Brio, the world-leading designer and manufacturer of sliding and folding door hardware solutions, is helping Input Joinery of Andover in Hampshire create its prestigious hardwood bi-folding door installations, including a highly specialist curved bi-folding door project. “Having seen many beautiful properties desecrated by the craze for aluminium and plastic doors and windows we felt it was time for Input Joinery to fight back with a range of products truly worthy of our name as a provider of high quality joinery,” says Mark Fisher, Managing Director at Input Joinery. He goes on to explain that sliding folding timber doors are a relatively new concept in the UK for domestic properties and are becoming very popular in both the new-build and replacement window/door market. “They can open to almost 95% of the opening available, unlike traditional sliding patio doors which only open to about 45% of the available width.” ENQUIRY-Card 124 ENQUIRY-Card 125 ENQUIRY-Card 126

The full Master range has options of three, four, five and six door sets with a price range from £1419 - £3359. For more information on the Master and all other Vufold bi-fold doors, visit ENQUIRY-Card 572

A heavyweight champion in the folding door market In response to market demands, AluK (GB) has introduced into its product range the new BSF70 HD aluminium folding door system, providing its customers with a unique offering that will help to expand their business opportunities whilst providing end users with a greater choice of heavier panels without any loss in performance. The superior new BSF70 HD features a heavy duty roller and top guide to accommodate heavier glass load to an impressive 130kg per panel. The increase in panel weight means that fabricators will now be able to offer their customers a door system which can carry heavier double or triple glazed panels, improving the thermal efficiency and acoustic insulation of their homes. To reliably accommodate the heavier panels, the innovative BSF70 HD comes with a built-in alignment pin within the hinge assembly to provide accurate and permanent panel positioning. Solarlux wins “Best of the Best 2015” ICONIC AWARD for innovative cero window Solarlux was presented with one of the world's most renowned architecture prizes, the ICONIC AWARD, in Munich as part of the Expo Real trade fair on 5th October. Solarlux’s innovative sliding window design, cero, has been the worthy recipient of the Best of the Best award in the "Façade" product category.

This is the second prestigious award within the space of 12 months’ for the Solarlux team. As well as the ICONIC AWARD Best of the Best, the German

manufacturer, also known for its Bi-folding glass doors and Wintergardens, accepted the iF Gold Award back in the spring. This double triumph proves

that the cero unique sliding window has caught the attention of both the design world and the architecture world. Winners of the ICONIC AWARDS are selected by an independent, expert jury made up of representatives from the fields of architecture, interior design as well as design and brand communication. Every year, prizes are awarded for visionary architecture, innovative products and sustainable communication from all sectors of the construction, real estate industries and manufacturing industries. The ICONIC AWARD focusses on outstanding, exemplary design and its integration into the urban, cultural and economic context. Solarlux itself refers to cero as the "inside outside", as it highlights the philosophy that has been inspiring Solarlux in the creation of its own glazing solutions for over 30 years. Managing Director, Stefan Holtgreife, said: "Our windows and façades connect indoors with outdoors, and allow these to merge together as one – cero was born from this very idea, and takes it to a whole new level". As the ICONIC AWARDS are particularly well-known for taking a holistic approach to

the design process and the integration into a particular environment, Stefan added: "We are extremely pleased to have struck a chord both with all the designers and also in the relevant fields". Best of the Best recognition is a fitting extension of the cero philosophy, as the window combines high levels of functionality with exceptional aesthetics, boasting expansive glass panels and extremely slender frames. This particular closed window could not feel any more open. Even the edges are kept in the all-glass look, while the threshold-free transitions complement the elegant design, which almost melts away as a result of its own transparency. The most impressive aspects of the cero sliding window are its features; allowing for large-scale window façades of up to 15 square metres which still appear light and elegant as they can be opened and closed easily and quietly, either manually or with a motor. For further information about the cero innovative sliding window, call Solarlux on 01707 339 970 or email ENQUIRY-Card 577

The Heritage Roofing Register propels contractor to victory

Wet summer sees increase in SIG Roofing’s Core Range demand for emergency roof seal initiative rolled out nationwide

The unique register of Heritage Roofing developed by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) proved to be the catalyst behind one roofing contractor not only being appointed to work on a key heritage project in Wales, but also to scooping the 2015 UK Roofing Award for Heritage Roofing. Jordan Heritage Roofing Ltd, based in Derbyshire, was appointed alongside Slate & Stone Consultants to renovate Penmaen Cottage - a grade two-listed farm building located in Snowdonia National Park. The roofing company guaranteed the confidence and expertise vital for this project by being featured on the National Heritage Roofing Contractors Register. This provides a listing of roofing companies that have the vital skills and experience necessary for the repair and renovation of specialist heritage roofing projects.

Following the wettest summer on record, Thompson’s has reported that demand for one of its products rose significantly during the season. The leading weatherproofing brand saw sales of its iconic Emergency Roof Seal rise by 64 per cent, as homes around the country experienced a washout summer and the need for a quick-fix solution became paramount for many. Thompson’s Emergency Roof Seal is one of the brand’s most popular products given its reputation for fast and effective results. Used for small holes or cracks in flat roofs, Emergency Roof Seal will immediately fill or bridge gaps, even in heavy rain or under water. It flexes with the natural movement of the roof for a tough, long-lasting repair. Marc Olding, Marketing Manager at Thompson’s said: “With a range of products that are designed to protect against the elements, we expect to see peaks and troughs throughout the year. Traditionally, sales of our Emergency Roof Seal spike much later in the year and around February/March time. “ ENQUIRY-Card 132 ENQUIRY-Card 133

As part of its commitment to make roofing contractors’ lives simpler, all SIG Roofing branches nationwide will now stock a Core Range of everyday and specialist products, readily available and in stock at all times. This Core Range not only focusses on the essentials, it also includes all the necessary bespoke products roofing contractors need to get the job done first time. The Core Range initiative came after widespread research, undertaken by SIG, which identified contractors are often forced to go to a number of different stores to source the equipment they require to do their jobs, which eats into valuable project time. With Core Range, they can now walk into any SIG Roofing branch across the UK, knowing that they will have the right products for the job, always in stock. ENQUIRY-Card 134

Tony Clarkin is Managing Director of Silverstar Scaffolding and draws attention to key benefits arising from the use of the Layher system. “The lightweight design of Allround simplifies handling which then combines with the built-in rosette connectors to enable erection times to be dramatically reduced when compared to tube and fitting alternatives,” he says. “For example, we estimate that one gable end structure, which was erected by just two scaffolders with the help of four labourers, would have taken double the time and called for six scaffolders and the support of four men.” He also highlights the wide bay design of the Layher scaffolding and the fact that it does not require cross-bracing. This not only helps to optimise safe movement around the structure for the various trades on site, but is also of great significance when large size components need to be handled – of particular importance here as the design of the building Synseal has experienced a very positive market response to the launch of the company’s new Celsius Solid Roof, with requests for project quotations surpassing expectations. The key sales arena is undoubtedly retrofit replacement of existing 1st generation conservatory roofs, which is certainly a growing market segment. The sizeable quantity of installed conservatories across the length and breadth of the UK presents a prime opportunity for upgrading with either high performance insulated roof glass or a modern tiled solid roof. An Energy Follow-Up Survey 2011 report 6: Conservatories, prepared by the BRE in December 2013 on behalf of the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC), identified that approximately 18% of the 21.9 million households in England have a conservatory which equates to around 4 million conservatories. Only 77% of these conservatories have heating and a telling additional statistic from Palmer Market Research is that back in 2004, when new conservatory sales were still at their peak at almost 200,000

features large window fittings. The project is seeing the 1960’s Telecom House in Sheffield being transformed into 366 studios with the 14-storey landmark building set to grow with the addition of a new 15th floor. The project has had to accommodate a pedestrian walkway and an adjacent 5storey car park which, effectively, acts as a podium from which the residence rises above. “Considerations that had to be accommodated included a significant gradient at ground level and restrictions associated with building directly from the top level of the car park,” continues Tony Clarkin. Pedestrian access is being maintained across the front of the building by the creation of a protective canopy using triple aluminium Layher beams while on the car park, Silverstar Scaffolding has built the

scaffold from specially installed steel sections which were designed to minimise contact with the surface. Significantly, the installation also demonstrates the ease with which Layher scaffolding can be utilised in conjunction with mast climbers. “The scaffold is particularly effective in areas where the façade layout prevented mast climbers being used,” says Sean Pike, Layher’s UK Managing Director. “Each scaffold lift was fully fitted out with Layher decking to give permanent access to all working faces with two full height Layher stairtowers also installed by Silverstar within the scaffold frame.” Work is scheduled to be completed in a 72 week programme and is set to provide high quality, state-ofthe-art student accommodation. “At the same time, it is a clear demonstration of the versatility of our Allround scaffolding system combining with Silverstar Scaffolding’s installation skills to meet challenging access requirements on a project of this type and size,” concludes Sean Pike. Market demand is strong for Celsius Solid Roof installs a year, 75% of those projects featured polycarbonate roof glazing. These factors combine to underpin a tangible market demand for upgrading with a thermally-efficient replacement roof solution. “We knew we were doing the right thing in launching Celsius

Solid Roof,” comments Mark Schlotel, Head of Marketing at Synseal, “but the feedback from installers to our new truly warm all-timber solid roof design has been fantastic. The number one marketing activity for us is to demonstrate just how quickly our projectspecific Celsius Solid Roof kits

can be fitted on site through Open Day technical workshops. We welcome installers to come and take a look at how swiftly our well-engineered roof goes together. The other issue we are tackling head-on is explaining how to successfully process Building Regulations applications which are

definitely required for solid roof jobs, as installers who are used to fitting exempt conservatories may regard that legislative hurdle to be a daunting prospect at first.” ENQUIRY-Card 586

Freefoam report 47% increase in colour roofline sales

Trends are changing for external building products particularly doors, windows and roofline. For many years white was right, the only option and the only choice but colour has now become a viable option with doors, windows, fascia and soffit now available in a myriad of shades and finishes. Freefoam, the colour roofline specialist, report a significant rise in sales of colour roofline products with Anthracite Grey showing a 47% increase closely followed by Sable and Black.

These figures mirror trends in the market place with specifiers increasingly choosing grey and black for windows and doors giving developments a contemporary feel. Not sprayed, not foiled but extruded. Traditionally colour is achieved by applying a top coat, either by spraying or foiling. Freefoam set out to innovate and overcome the issues of fading and cracking and developed ColormaxTM – its own patented technology. An advanced master-batching process with a special blend of natural PVC compound is

dosed on-line and co-extruded with specific concentrations of pigment for the required colour. This means that the colour skin and the foam core are intrinsically bonded together creating colourfast products. First for choice, Guarantees and availability. Freefoam is the only company to manufacture 10 colours as standard and the Colormax technology enables the production of any colour for special projects quickly and effectively. Confidence in the ColormaxTM

technology and extensive weather and laboratory testing allows Freefoam to offer its unique ten guarantee showing customers that they can rely on our exceptional colour performance. Recognising one of the key barriers to sales was lead times the Colormax technology allows Freefoam to offer the majority of colours ‘off the shelf’ complete with matching trims and fixing pins. George Petts, Sales and Technical Support at Freefoam customer Willmott's of Reading Ltd, reports “Freefoam’s ColormaxTM range has helped us win new business. Freefoam has a colour option to suit all styles of home from traditional Tudor designs, where black, pale gold and sable blend beautifully with oak and render finishes, or more contemporary designs where storm grey, anthracite grey and dark grey fit the bill perfectly. We’ve also seen increased demand for colour from commercial developments, where Freefoam’s colour range is seen as a simpler and more cost effective option to traditional powder coated aluminium products.” To find out how to add colour to your project or development call 01604 591110 or visit ENQUIRY-Card 588

Smarter EWI specification It’s estimated that there are around 7.8 million solid walled homes in the UK. With energy efficiency and the associated cost savings becoming more important and recognised by government, local authorities, housing associations and the general public, there’s a clear and pressing demand to upgrade the energy performance of these properties.

Refurbishent funding schemes, such as ECO, make external wall insulation (EWI) - which prevents energy loss in homes without cavity walls - an attractive choice for homeowners and contractors alike. In most cases contractors are buying complete, prescribed EWI systems direct from manufacturers. This is great for the manufacturer; they cut out the middle man, usually a merchant or insulation distributor, and have controlled distribution over their product. However, this offers little choice and even less flexibility for the aforementioned contractors and specifiers. Supplying through partnerships with distributors is the first step towards driving choice, value and more importantly quality in this industry. Currently the choice is very limited at the sales desk, with Climatherm from Bostik being one of the few systems distributed in this way. This makes the product much more accessible to certified contractors and removes one of the purported barriers of entry into this market for tradesmen. Bostik continues to add more distribution partners and works with them to expand the specification of Climatherm while maintaining Board of Agrément (BBA) approval at every stage. By working closely with a growing list of approved EWI system component providers, Bostik and its distribution partners ensure BBA Certification is maintained and controlled throughout the supply chain. This unique supply chain route offers efficiency in every sense; efficient supply through reduced lead times, local stocking and local installation, and efficient energy use via improved insulation and reduced heat loss in existing housing stock.
