Yeoman Shield Protects 24/7 at North Birmingham Academy North Birmingham Academy opened the doors of its £23.6 million state of the art facilities in 2013. Not only does the building cater for the everyday requirements of a school environment for 1119 year olds but also accommodates out of hours school clubs and activities, some like The Zone sports hall and conference facilities open to the general public. “Because of the myriad of uses and the amount of people and equipment that moves around the building almost 24/7, we noticed that very quickly the new walls particularly were getting marked and damaged detracting from the appearance of the Academy. “Image says a lot to both pupils and visitors about a school and with the amount of money invested into the building we were very keen to find a solution that would halt the damage and help to maintain a pristine and attractive interior. That’s when we contacted Yeoman Shield for advice on their wall and door protection products.” Explained the premises manager for NBA. Yeoman Shield’s Area Sales Manager undertook a free site survey

Hauraton drainage channel used at a new Cardiff City Stadium & Retail Park Officially opened in July 2009 the 26,500 seat Cardiff City Stadium is at the heart of major new infrastructure project in Leckwith, located to the West of the Welsh Capital. The stadium’s extensive concourse and car park are drained using 800 metres of Hauraton’s fibre reinforced concrete FASERFIX® KS surface water drainage channels. In addition 400 metres of KS units were also installed to provide pitch-side drainage. The Stadium is part of a multi million pound development that also includes the 43,964 m² Capital Retail Park, a 5000 capacity, IAAF approved International Athletics and community sports venue and a 70 room hotel. Landscaped roads into the Retail Park incorporate over 600 metres of Hauraton ENVIROKERB kerb-side drainage. Having the appearance of standard concrete kerb, the components are in fact made from 100% recycled material that weighs far less than concrete, allowing units to comply with the maximum 25kg “one-man-lift” legislation.

The drainage in the 1500 space retail car park was a tricky problem. Because of its position between the Stadium and Retail development it was essential that rainwater run-off in this highly used area would be effectively drained. 530 metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® HICAP® high capacity, slotted drainage channel was found to be the answer. A further 495 metres of HICAP® were used to drain the commercial access areas.

Thermoblock Premieres in Leicester Square The refurbishment of a landmark listed property on London’s Leicester Square has seen Marmox Thermoblocks specified in very large quantities for an unusual application. Number 48 Leicester Square is being completely redeveloped behind the retained 1920s stone façade, with Make Architects leading the design team on behalf of client, Linseed Assets, while Pacific Construction is the main contractor. When complete the remodeled property overlooking one of the capital's most famous public realms will offer 186,000 square feet of usable space over seven new floors of offices with retail units at street level. There will also be accommodation on a newly created upper storey, behind what Make Architects describe as a fresh interpretation of the traditional mansard roof. Pivotal to this radical reconstruction has been the need to stabilize and strengthen the outer elevations which had been badly weakened by previous alterations over the past century. With a full facade retention structure in place and the basement area framed by a retaining wall, the project team's solution involved raising an internal inner blockwork wall using aerated concrete. This is intended to improve the thermal performance of the exterior elevations as well as their regularity and soundness, while taking up the minimum interior space.

As part of this, the project team elected to make use of the Marmox Thermoblocks as a means of minimizing heat loss at the critical floor wall junction. The 600 mm long insulation units incorporate mini columns of high strength, low conductivity concrete to support the load of the wall above while the low lambda value insulation virtually eliminates the path for coldbridging. They are laid using normal bricklaying mortar with special Marmox Multibond sealant used to secure and seal the stepped joints while an integral layer of mesh on the upper and lower surfaces offers a good mortar bond for block-laying to continue in the conventional manner. In total over 1000 of the 640X140X65 mm Thermoblocks were supplied by the Islington branch of Travis Perkins, helping create a continuous horizontal thermal break beneath the new wall rising from the basement of 48 Leicester Square: ensuring it will meet the current Building Regulations and that the structure will endure for many decades to come.

Pendock’s columns take off at the O2

The Hub, which was formed in 2005 as a Specialist Fit-out Contractor to the Museums & Heritage Sector and has since built an enviable reputation within the industry, has specified decorative column casings from Pendock for its latest project carried out in Greenwich’s most prominent landmark. Virgin Atlantic Airways and Delta Air Lines, the official airline partners of The O2, launched the glamorous NY-LON Lounge Bar during the summer: having the capacity for up to 300 guests within the Turbine Lounge - a large bar and seating area - while an additional “Secret Meeting room” can cater for meetings, private dining or other events in an intimate setting. Designed by the Manchester based consultancy, LOVE, the stunning aviation inspired 6,000-square foot space features two round and two square columns supplied by UK-based specialist, Pendock.

The decorative, stainless steel 304 columns feature a mirror finish outer skin, with a 6mm protective acoustic layer. The Pendock range of metal casings is supplied as a complete system: including an integral carrier arrangement, joint infills and mullions. Each floor to ceiling casing produced for the NY-LON Lounge stands 2850mm tall; two with a diameter of 700mm and two 550mm square. Additionally, Pendock provided all the fixings and fixing cover channels: including top and bottom collars and semicircular trim sections. The visual impact is very much in keeping with the aviation theme of the new lounge bar, which honours the airlines’ important New York – London route. The luxury, ultra-modern décor is mainly fitted out in warm browns and tans while the columns reflect the muted light and furnishings to great effect, mimicking the curves created in the walls and by the lighting.

Dallmer Introduces ‘Red Zone’ Roof Drain

From the Met Office to the Governor of the Bank of England, we are constantly being warned about the potential consequences of Climate Change and the risk of more frequent extreme weather events but are offered few lasting solutions other than “cutting carbon emissions” – which is why Dallmer has introduced its high capacity ‘Red’ Drain. The unit’s red colour identifies it as a separate system from the conventional flat roof drainage and is intended to provide overflow when the main outlets are being overwhelmed. Crucially, the versatile design can be connected to chutes or to pipework in gravity or siphonic systems. This clears excess storm-water quickly before it can find vulnerable joints (typically where the waterproofing meets upstands) or exert excess structural loads. ‘Red’ Drain variants can be installed as part of a new roof or retrofitted into an existing one and are adjustable to suit different insulation thicknesses and waterproofing systems. The latter include Bitumen felt, single ply PVC, TPO, EPDM as well as liquid applied membranes. The ‘Red’ Drain will either be situated on the flat roof itself or within a box gutter where it can be adjusted to work when the standing water has reached an excess depth of

typically 30 mm up to a maximum of 100mm. Furthermore, because of the ‘Red’ Drain’s design it compensates for the tendency of secondary drainage systems to silt up through their occasional usage. This height adjustability can be of particular importance if the primary drainage system is siphonic as setting the overflow too low could rob the siphonic system of water, admitting air and rendering it ineffective. A spokesperson for Dallmer commented: “All too frequently, we see North America and Europe experience new record rainfall, which has led to water ponding on flat roofs : this can cause serious damage, especially to lightweight steel structures. Installing our ‘Red’ Drains as overflows for a flat roof drainage system, can guard against these extreme events, protecting both property and the occupants.” “Whatever the type of roof make-up or the pipework system used there is a ‘Red’ Drain suitable for the job. They offer high flow rates as well as straightforward installation and the building remains properly protected.”
