BRITISH GYPSUM CHAMPIONS EVIDENCEBASED APPROACH TO DESIGN

British Gypsum is launching a new online portal to provide industry professionals and building users with evidence-based design (EBD) research and solutions. Evidence Space provides its audience with credible evidence to help influence the design of new build and refurbishment projects. EBD, which is described as a way to develop better spaces based upon credible research, provides the industry with reliable research to aid the design process. The main benefits of EBD should be considered during design, but have an impact on all stages of the building process, from creating innovative evidence-based concepts to measuring post-occupancy performance results. PLAY THE LIGHT: TRESPA® METEON® RANGE EXTENDED WITH LUMEN

TESSERA LAYOUT AND OUTLINE Forbo’s answer to modern workspace designs Forbo Flooring Systems has launched a new low-level loop Tessera carpet tile collection, consisting of two ranges: Layout and Outline. With the light to dark colour palette of Layout and the clean lines of Outline, specifiers can combine the ranges seamlessly to create striking transitional designs, or use them separately to highlight a variety of workspaces. The new low-level loop, solution-dyed carpet tiles have a chunky texture to provide end users with a tactile and contemporary vibe. From oceanic blues, bright pinks and natural grey shades, Layout consists of 32 diverse, modern colours and tones – all of which have been manufactured with Forbo’s unique yarn, offering exclusivity to its colourways.

Trespa has announced the launch of its new Trespa® Meteon® Lumen range. Architects and designers can now play with the composition of light reflection on exterior façades, allowing natural light to be creatively introduced as a design element. Available in three variations across eight colours, each of the three Lumen variations comes in grey, black and white and several terracotta tones. ‘Diffuse’ removes glossiness, reflection and texture, giving facades a smooth, subdued appearance. ‘Oblique’ has a pleasantly uneven mattand-gloss surface that brings a natural, weathered look to any façade. manufactured the range with Forbo’s unique tufting technology. This allowed the range to have a chunkier texture to deliver a more sophisticated look, without compromising on budgets. Forbo’s new collection is also manufactured with over 60% recycled content by weight – a continued improvement, which is part of Forbo’s Creating Better Environments programme. The new family range also has BREEAM ratings of A and A+ and meets the SKA rating for M12 soft floor coverings for the office scheme.

To complement the new directional colourways in Layout, Outline has a portfolio of eight organic linear designs, which have an obvious orientation rather than bold, definitive stripes. The Outline design has been created to reflect the softer, more distressed linear design statements that are set to trend throughout 2016. Designed to work separately or in accord with each other, this new collection can help office designers to create flexible working spaces to suit a variety of activities - from collaborative working and social interactions to more individual, focused tasks.. As well as being the perfect solution for commercial offices, Layout and Outline is also suitable for educational buildings and leisure environment sectors, which require an eye-catching yet functional carpet tile. David Breen, Product Manager at Forbo Flooring Systems, commented: “In order to achieve a more luxurious look and feel, not normally found within low-level loop carpet tiles, we

ROOFSHIELD AT QUARTERMILE, EDINBURGH

Located on the former site of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in the heart of the city, Quartermile is a mixed use development comprising Grade A office buildings, retail and leisure space and luxury apartments. The impressive roof structures of these unique buildings required careful consideration of moisture management and condensation control. The scale and complexity of the turreted roofs, along with its historic appearance within a UN World Heritage Site made adding traditional ventilation to the roof highly undesirable, but also required a high performance and robust solution. The architects did not have to travel far to find this solution however, as the Roofshield air and vapour

permeable underlay specified is supplied by the A. Proctor Group, based just 60 miles away in Blairgowrie, Perthshire. By combining the highest available vapour permeability with an air open structure which permits greater airflow than conventional ventilation, Roofshield ensures condensation problems are reduced or eliminated in even the most complex roof geometry. Roofshield is fully BBA certified, and accepted for use without additional ridge ventilation by the NHBC. It also requires no taping to comply with BS5534:2014. A. 08 FOCUS ON : ROOFING, CLADDING & INSULATION : KEMPER SYSTEMS

Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 has been used yet again to repair the roof of Royal & Sun Alliance’s headquarters in Horsham following the success of a project to refurbish the building’s balconies last year.

Enquiry No.206 www.mclink.co.uk/908-206

KEMPER SYSTEM UNDERWRITES ROOF REFURB SUCCESS AT ROYAL & SUN ALLIANCE Within the central part of the building there were three individual roof areas, covering a radius of 400m2. These areas were overlaid to address leaks in the existing single ply membrane. Roofing contractor, All Angles Roofing, carried out the six-week project on behalf of principal contractor, RCL Services, including repairs to the existing insulation.

The scheme follows on from three previous projects, spaced over two years, to repair three balcony areas, covering a total of 710m2, on the same building where water ingress was putting refurbished areas below at risk. Several attempts to repair the roof with other systems had failed to address the issue, but Royal & Sun Alliance has no further

leaks thanks to the Kemperol V210 overlay. All Angles Roofing having cleaned and prepared the existing roof surface applied Kemper System’s D primer. The installation team then laid the Kemperol V210 resin in a single wet-on-wet process that ensures complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece. Once cured the resin forms a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that bonds directly to the substrate. Comments Mike Baulu from All Angles Roofing, “We have carried out numerous programmes on this building over the past few years and the balcony areas had proved a particular challenge. “A year after being refurbished using Kemperol V210, the balconies are performing well with no signs of any leakage, so R&SA had no hesitation in using the same system for this new roof area.” Website: www.kempersystem.co.uk

21ST CENTURY ALUMINIUM FACADES The alu-fx Patina ‘Timeless Collection’ from ALM (HM) fills a gap in the metal facade and roofing markets by providing aluminium with a high end aesthetic at low cost. The colours available in traditional aluminium have always been too numerous to stock and the lack of similarity to more subtle hard metal finishes offers limited design scope. The six alu-fx finishes are all stocked by ALM and Jamestown Metals with oxidised steel, brushed and textured black, grey and bronze finishes, replicating finishes such as pre-weathered zinc, oxid copper and bronze. At 0.7mm thick and with an installed width of 530mm the weight per m2 is just 1.9kg - up to 60% lighter and 50-75% less expensive than other metals. Life expectancy is up to 60 years and with a Class A1 Fire Classification alu-fx is suitable for flat or curved standing seam roofing and cladding. Reynaers’ improved aluminium Concept Wall 50-HI (High Insulation) system, which offers better thermal insulation properties than ever before, has been used to create an impressive art space and office complex in Prague. Developed by PPF Real Estate and CMC architects, the modern building is both environmentally-friendly and visually stunning. The office complex provides 23,000 square metres of leasable units and consists of two separate buildings: ‘Gen’ is made up of three six-storey blocks connected into one structure; and the dynamic nine-storey ‘Art’ separates the busy traffic of Argentinská Street from the quieter residential area behind the complex. This new variant of CW 50 benefits from improved insulation profiles, which can achieve an impressive insulation value (Uf) down to 0.56 W/m2K with a glass thickness of 60 mm. Previously this was 0.73 W/m2K, while the standard CW 50 system has a Uf value of 1.7 W/m2K. REYNAERS

IKO POLYMERIC & FK GROUP FINISH 48,000M2 ROOF IN FOUR MONTHS IKO Polymeric and contactor FK Group have completed a roofing project for one of the biggest online grocery centres in the world – in under four months. This incredibly tight deadline was met with minimal material waste, thanks to a number of innovations developed specifically for the project by both companies. The new fulfilment centre for premium British online supermarket, Ocado, is based in Erith, Kent, and will be operational in 2017. It will handle 200,000 orders a week and represents £185 million local investment. The project started in September 2015 and was completed in December, a very short construction programme for a large - 48,000m2 - and challenging roofing

project. IKO Polymeric, the UK’s only single ply manufacturer, delivered several innovative solutions to complete the job with minimal waste. Steve Hall, Managing Director of FK Group, comments: “IKO Polymeric demonstrated its usual proactive approach with innovations such as bespoke roll lengths and specific membrane overlap positioning allowing significant efficiencies to be achieved on site.” Standard length membrane is typically 20 linear metres which then has to be cut or extended (by fixing additional sections on) to fit the required dimensions. IKO Polymeric manufactured its Amourplan PVC single ply membrane in bespoke rolls of 22.35, 19.20 and 8.00 linear metres to reduce waste and installation time for this project. MAGGIE’S CANCER CENTRE ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND, UNITED KINGDOM

Centre is the latest such centre to provide emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer.

Unusually shaped, the architecturally stunning Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen in Scotland is designed to assist in the psychological and emotional healing process for those affected by cancer. A Licensed Icynene contractor installed both Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and Icynene H2 Foam LiteTM in the pebble-shaped structure. Situated on the southern boundary of the Foresterhill site of the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen, Scotland, Maggie’s Cancer

The centre, designed to be homely and full of warmth, aims to provide an environment where those facing cancer can gain support. The centre also intends to inspire imagination from visitors and has contributed to the architecture of the Aberdeen city area. The Design: Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, together with Scottish firm, Halliday Fraser Munro, took on the challenge to create a visually stunning structure in the shape of a pebble. The unusually-shaped single storey structure features a reinforced concrete exterior and

DALLMER INTRODUCES ‘RED ZONE’ ROOF DRAIN From the Met Office to the Governor of the Bank of England, we are constantly being warned about the potential consequences of Climate Change and the risk of more frequent extreme weather events but are offered few lasting solutions other than “cutting carbon emissions” – which is why Dallmer has introduced its high capacity ‘Red’ Drain. The unit’s red colour identifies it as a separate system from the conventional flat roof drainage and is intended to provide overflow when the main outlets are being overwhelmed. Crucially, the versatile design can be connected to chutes or to pipework in gravity or siphonic systems. This clears excess storm-water quickly before it can find vulnerable joints (typically where the waterproofing meets upstands) or exert excess structural loads. ‘Red’ Drain variants can be installed as part of a new roof or retrofitted into an existing one and are adjustable to suit different insulation thicknesses and waterproofing systems. The latter include Bitumen felt, single ply PVC, TPO, EPDM as well as liquid applied membranes. The ‘Red’ Drain will either be situated on the flat roof itself or within a box gutter where it can be adjusted to work when the standing water has

ROOFING, CLADDING & INSULATION 11 timber interior. Steel reinforcements were used to form the structure’s unique shape. With activity and meeting rooms located on the ground floor and office space on the mezzanine, the centre features high-end interior finishes and manages to create a peaceful, welcoming and beautiful space for anyone who visits. Insulating Maggie’s Cancer Centre: A Licensed local Icynene contractor was enlisted by Halliday Fraser Munro to help insulate the centre in February 2013 using two high performance Icynene spray foam insulation products. The spray foam insulation crew used five sets of the 100% water-blown closed cell medium density Icynene H2Foam ForteTM and used seven sets of the open cell Icynene H2Foam LiteTM throughout the curved structure. Spray foam crews applied the medium- density material on the lower part of the structure to a height of 2.5m in an effort to provide additional structural strength. Being 100% water blown, Icynene H2Foam ForteTM has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 1 - the lowest GWP available. In additional to providing structural strength, the closed cell product also can reject bulk water penetrating through the building envelope. Above the 2.5m mark and across the curved roofline Icynene H2Foam LiteTM was applied. Due to the unique curvature of the roofline, crews had to aid the rise of the foam by hand to ensure consistent and even coverage. As a result of using spray

foam insulation throughout the design, an extremely high R-value was achieved. With a high R-value, staff and visitors to Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen will be able to work and heal in comfort all year round regardless of the season.

Both Icynene H2Foam LiteTM and Icynene H2Foam ForteTM contribute to creating a positive, peaceful and comfortable environment for visitors to the new centre in Aberdeen. The Result: Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Aberdeen was completed and opened in September 2013. The structure, set apart by a small landscaped area, is open to anyone requiring its services and support. The unusual shape and highly visual design has been receiving attention from the architecture community and the greater Aberdeen community. In November 2013, the centre was awarded a Commendation by Aberdeen’s Civic Society and in March 2014, GMS Insulations Ltd, the Icynene distributor in the UK, was awarded the Best Architectural Project – International at the Icynene 2014 Global Conference for their involvement in the project.

reached an excess depth of typically 30 mm up to a maximum of 100mm. Furthermore, because of the ‘Red’ Drain’s design it compensates for the tendency of secondary drainage systems to silt up through their occasional usage. This height adjustability can be of particular importance if the primary drainage system is siphonic as setting the overflow too low could rob the siphonic system of water, admitting air and rendering it ineffective. A spokesperson for Dallmer commented: “All too frequently, we see North America and Europe experience new record rainfall, which has led to water ponding on flat roofs : this can cause serious damage, especially to lightweight steel structures. Installing our ‘Red’ Drains as overflows for a flat roof drainage system, can guard against these extreme events, protecting both property and the occupants.” Web: www.dallmer.de/en Enquiry No.211 www.mclink.co.uk/908-211

CASH IN ON THE NATION’S LOVE OF ALFRESCO LIVING WITH THE EASY FIT STEP LIGHTS FROM TIMEGUARD With the clocks springing forward, every garden owner is starting to think about gardening – and a surprising number of them will be doing a lot more than mowing the lawn and planting a few bulbs.

What can you offer? Every homeowner wants to enhance the appeal of his home and garden and the right exterior lighting adds a lot of extra magic after dark. What they might not be so keen on is having you gouge out a recess in their garden wall to fit lights in to.

According to market researchers AMA the overall garden landscaping market is recovering after a volatile period from 2008-12 when it suffered from the impact of the economic downturn and weather conditions (notably poor in 2012). Sustained growth is now expected until at least 2019. Key factors influencing the market include the housing market, consumer confidence, and the general interest in gardening as a hobby or to grow produce. Add to that the trend for gardens to be seen as an extension to the home and al fresco dining, and there’s clearly an opportunity for electrical installers to share the bonanza.

That’s where Timeguard’s new range of super-slimline, compact surface mounted IP65 LED step lights make it easy to add decorative and safety lighting on steps and decks. These LED deck/step lights are a great way to add distinct accent lighting and provide safety lighting to your steps or deck walkways. Wired directly to your home's electrical system or your 230V mains voltage landscaping system, they use very little energy. Once installed, you’ll have the quality assurance of the Timeguard’s extended guarantee: they’re designed to last for years electrically, plus they’ll look good for years to come as well. There’s no need to channel out the step or wall and the double-insulated luminaires do not require an earth. The surface mount back plates provide for fast terminal block connection, making them even quicker and easier to install.

Nathan James Dodd, blogger at gardensite.co.uk, has identified lighting as one of the top five trends for 2016 alongside more ‘serious’ outdoor furniture, built-in barbeques, more container growing and encouraging wildlife. New and innovative lighting techniques, he says, will increase the amount of time we spend outside; with energy efficient LED technology enhancing the alfresco lifestyle at a much lower cost. So what are you waiting for: what is your strategy to get in on the boom?

is just 150mm in diameter and 27mm deep, and will provide discrete, trouble-free down lighting for steps, corridors and passageways indoors and out for many years. Electrical wholesalers are now stocking square, oblong and round versions in both colours. Safety first Electric Barbeques and garden tools all need regular mains power, and it’s worth giving all your customers’ outdoor sockets a health check. I’ve seen some shocking examples of loose casings and missing lids with the socket exposed to the elements and – more importantly – to kids playing in the garden. Any IP protection may be long gone. There is plenty of choice when looking for replacement sockets but, if one of the main reasons you are replacing the old ones is that they look so bad, then do choose a replacement that looks stunning and can be relied on to stay looking that way. Weathersafe Vision from Timeguard not only looks good but has the added safety of see through covers that show people the on/off status of the supply at a glance. Sockets with built-in RCD’s (safety cut out circuit breakers) enable you to provide extra functionality for our customers.

Delivering from 20 to 24 Lumens of cool white light the new dark grey and white polycarbonate Timeguard Step Lights have the good looks and guaranteed durability that property owners will welcome indoors or out. They are remarkably compact – the round model, for instance,

14 EXTERNAL WORKS, LANDSCAPING, DRAINAGE & WASTE WATER MANAGEMENT CHARCON INTRODUCES ANDOVER RANGE EXTENSIONS

Charcon has introduced six new shades to its popular Andover Washed concrete block paving range. In response to increased demand from specifiers and contractors for contemporary colour options, three new grey shades – Light, Mid and Dark Grey – have been added to complement the existing Andover range. The collection has been strengthened with the addition of three bespoke shades – Pink Granite, Heather Porphyry and Tuscan Porphyry – which were designed specifically for Leicester’s Greyfriars Conservation Area, ahead of the reinternment of King Richard III in 2015. The new shades have extended the Andover Washed range from two standard colour options – Silver Grey and Anthracite Charcoal – to eight complementary shades. CHARCON

NEW HAURATON HYDRAULIC INTERACTIVE APP Hauraton have developed an interactive Hydraulic App for tablets and lap/desktop computers that provides engineers and contractors with a selection of their surface water drainage channels available against four criteria, namely : 1. A specified rainfall – millimetres per hour (mm/h), 2. The surface coefficient of concrete, asphalt or pavement, or a specified surface coefficient value. 3. The length of the channel run required – metres (m). 4. The depth (breadth) of surface area to be drained – metres (m). Once the preferred values have been chosen, the App will automatically select all the channel options that can be used. The 3D channel images displayed can then be rotated on screen and show the water capacity held for each metre of channel based on the four criteria. Civil Engineers, and Landscaping Contractors can request the new Hauraton Hydraulic App by emailing technical@hauraton.co.uk HAURATON

POLYPIPE SUPPLIES PERMAVOID FOR WALTHAMSTOW STADIUM SUDS SOLUTION A Polypipe shallow stormwater management system holding 1.5 million litres of water has been designed for use in one of London’s prestigious new residential developments. As part of the project the Environment Agency stated that there was the need to ‘make space for water’ and reduce existing urban stormwater run-off by 80%. This will allow the site to be capable of handling rainfall in the event of a ‘1 in 100’ year storm, in line with climate change planning. Working closely with MLM consultant engineers and Quadrant Construction, Polypipe designed a suitable solution utilising its high strength Permavoid geocellular system to form a sub-base replacement system beneath 4,500m2 of permeable paving. This will provide 1,500m³ of water attenuation to meet the requirements previously agreed with the Environment Agency at the pre-planning stage. POLYPIPE

SIOO WOOD PROTECTION - A NEW WOOD MODIFICATION FOR THE UK All too often the appearance of new timber clad buildings is ruined by uneven weathering. It is quite common to see buildings where the shaded areas are still unweathered whereas the exposed areas have already changed to the silvery-grey colour associated with exposed wood. For this reason, pictures of timber clad buildings are always taken immediately after construction and not after a year or two! Aesthetics is hugely important in the built environment and this patchy weathering puts people o from specifying timber as a cladding material. A new product in the UK is the Swedish wood surface modification system, Sioo Wood Protection. This product reacts with the wood to produce a pleasing even grey surface within a few months of application. Very importantly, this accelerated weathering takes place through a chemical reaction of the Sioo system with the top few millimetres of the wood surface and so it is a permanent change. Because thegreying takes place due to the chemical reaction, a completely even appearance is obtained, since it is not reliant upon exposure to sunlight for the reaction to take place. The Sioo Wood Protection System uses silicate technology in a two part waterbased system. The first stage of the treatment uses a mineral silica solution that is able to penetrate the surface of the wood very eďŹƒciently. After the first treatment stage, a silane-based emulsion is applied, which cures by cross-linking to form a flexible silica network and provides a water-proof barrier preventing leaching of the mineral silicate. Over time, the

mineral silicate cures by reacting with atmospheric carbon dioxide to precipitate an insoluble silica network within the wood structure. The product has been used extensively for cladding and decking protection and has also been used to protect the decks of sailing boats. The Sioo system is used as a surface protection system, which is suitable for Use Classes 1, 2, 3.1 and 3.2 according to EN 335 Part 2 (see table). If additional protection is thought necessary for Use Class 3.2 applications, then the Sioo Wood Protection System can be applied to preservative treated wood and to thermally treated wood. When used in interior applications Sioo Wood has the huge advantage of being VOC-free, since it is water-based and uses silicate technology. Disposal at end of life is not a problem, since the product is non-toxic. Use Classes according to EN 335 Part 2.

ALL QUIET ON THE HARBOUR FRONT 150 years ago, the countryside west of Sønderborg in Jutland Denmark was the scene of the famous Battle of Dybbøl. Then it was very noisy while today, enjoying a masterplan by world-renowned American architect Frank Gehry, the town is very peaceful and quiet as are some of the harbour-front buildings which benefit from their use of high performance acoustic ceilings. Kontor C for example, is a six storey office designed by schmidt hammer lassen architects which stands right on the water’s edge. The façades are clad with 2,800 square metres of bronzed aluminium cassettes which project a special golden hue and distinguish it from its surroundings. It won an award for the most architecturally beautiful new building in Sønderborg. The interior is tasteful and simple with an inner atrium which feels generous in size because of its high ceilings. Here, Troldtekt natural wood

acoustic panels with a fine structure have been used on the ceilings and sides of the balconies throughout the building, ensuring a pleasant acoustic environment. Danish manufactured Troldtekt acoustic tiles are specified throughout the UK and Europe. Made with 100% natural wood fibres, their benefits are high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and Cradle to Cradle silver level sustainability. They are used to improve acoustics in many different projects, such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial and public buildings. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour. Products used include Delta MS500 and Delta PT to the internal faces of the walls prior to plastering. Applied to all ground floor walls, MS500 features an 8mm studded membrane, and these studs create a drainage path – allowing up to 135 litres/minute/metre of incoming water to be drained – far in excess of the likely demands. It is made from 0.6mm virgin thick high density polyethylene. Another extremely effective and popular product from the Delta range, Delta PT Lath – which has also been selected for the project – is a high performance polyethylene meshed membrane which is extruded into a series of studs. These studs create a continuous air gap behind the waterproof membrane. DELTA MEMBRANE SYSTEM Enquiry No.424. www.mclink.co.uk/908-424

YEOMAN SHIELD PROTECTS 24/7 AT NORTH BIRMINGHAM ACADEMY North Birmingham Academy opened the doors of its £23.6 million state of the art facilities in 2013. “Image says a lot to both pupils and visitors about a school and with the amount of money invested into the building we were very keen to find a solution that would halt the damage and help to maintain a pristine and attractive interior. That’s when we contacted Yeoman Shield for advice on their wall and door protection products.” Explained the premises manager for NBA. Yeoman Shield’s Area Sales Manager undertook a free site survey and furnished North Birmingham Academy with a fully itemised quotation along with samples of the products.

FalmouthEx 2.0mm thick wall protection panels were fitted, by a team of Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing operatives, at 1250mm high along the busy 1st and 2nd floor corridors. Having to co-ordinate with the contemporary decor scheme already in place Yeoman Shield’s new Aubergine colour proved to be the perfect choice. The wall of the Academy’s frequently used sports changing rooms were also protected with

Yeoman Shield FalmouthEx wall panels, this time in a Mushroom colour which whilst guarding against everyday wear and tear has proved easy to clean. The busy reception area of The Zone sports hall, which is frequented by students and is also open to the public between 5.00p.m. & 10.00p.m. on an evening and over the weekend, benefited from wall panels fitted around the notice board area in striking Regatta Blue and Mushroom. “Fitting Yeoman Shield will definitely show a saving on our annual redecoration budgets which can cost anywhere up to £50.00/m2 for the repainting of walls. It will also save staff time who will be able to be re deployed to other important projects helping us get through our workload more efficiently. “We were thrilled with the service and workmanship from Yeoman Shield and we will be continuing to roll out the wall protection throughout North Birmingham Academy.” Concluded the Academy’s premises manager.

‘ALUPROF'S BIM LIBRARY - LEVEL 2 READY’ The importance of having a complete library of BIM objects to hand and in the right format is a crucial step forward in order to meet the construction industrys' planned strategy efficiency targets for 2025, these include a 50% reduction in programme and a 33% reduction in overall construction costs. Aluprof are at the forefront of BIM technology and are already compliant with Revitt level 2 models, which is ahead of this years April deadline set by the government for public sector asset procurement. Part of the BIM Toolkit project, Aluprof’s systems have been implemented under Uniclass 2015, a single unified classification system for any type of building construction or infrastructure project. For specifiers and fabrication customers of Aluprof, BIM models are available for immediate download from the company website www.aluprof.eu/en. Dedicated support is available from the London specification office and the UK head office in Altrincham, where more complex requests can be fulfilled. Aluprof are currently looking at BIM Level 3 compliance, currently scheduled for adoption in 2019, this level suggests using a single source, shared project model held in a central location, such as a cloud server. By being accessible by all parties involved in the project, they should be able to work on and construct the same

electronic model. Currently known as ‘OpenBIM’, BIM Level 3 is the first model which will fully connect the supply and data chain from start to finish creating end to end efficiencies throughout the construction life cycle. Our Aluprof UK head office and extensive distribution centre is located in Altrincham, Cheshire. Aluprof systems are increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets the Aluprof exacting standards. SAGEGLASS® ELECTRONICALLY TINTABLE GLASS INSTALLED AT THE SWISS INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC SCHOOL IN DUBAI Enjoy the view on the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building of the world, through SageGlass® transform the traditional ideals of school buildings. SISD has been awarded the MINERGIE label, a renowned Swiss certificate for the pursuit of sustainable standards and reflects its commitment to providing students with a comfortable and healthy interior climate. It is the first MINERGIE standard compliant building in the MENA region.

SageGlass, the world’s smartest electronically tintable glass, is now installed in the façade of the landmark building of the Swiss International Scientific School in Dubai (SISD).

The façade of the main building of the school features 110m² of SageGlass®, marking the largest installation of electrochromic glass in the MENA region to date. The inclusion of SageGlass® in the project provides the occupants with a more comfortable working environment and greater connection to the outdoors, supporting the school founders’ vision to

“With this dynamic glazing on the façade of our building, we’re setting the precedent for environmental responsibility in an educational environment, and SaintGobain and SageGlass are an integral part of our vision. SageGlass’ unparalleled ability to enhance the indoor experience for occupants made it the perfect fit for this project,” said Mr Joe Barchini, Partner and COO at the Swiss International Scientific School of Dubai. “We want to attract dynamic educators and staff, so we have to offer working spaces that align with our values of social responsibility and sustainability. Innovative products like SageGlass are helping to create beautiful spaces that also improve the overall health and well-being of the building occupants. From our offices, we can enjoy the

wonderful view on the Dubai skyline, even when the sun is shining directly on our windows”. SageGlass was selected for this project for its ability to dynamically control sunlight to optimize daylight, maintain outdoor views and enhance comfort by preventing glare and solar heat. By blocking sunlight on hot days, SageGlass dramatically reduces energy demand and the need for HVAC, while increasing occupant comfort and well-being. With electronically tintable SageGlass, the building occupants have the ability to control their own environment and it provides them with a space that connects to the natural environment, which has been shown to boost productivity and satisfaction in the workplace. “SageGlass is excited to be an essential component of this remarkable project. We’re completely aligned with the SISD vision to develop a space that redefines the traditional learning and working environment,” said Alain Garnier, Manager Sales and Business Development for SageGlass in the Middle East. “We’re confident that this building is going to set the tone for the future of occupantsensitive design.” Web: www.sageglass.com Enquiry No.231. www.mclink.co.uk/908-231

NEW CELSIUS SOLID ROOF INSTALLATION VIDEO IS ONLINE Synseal has launched a new and informative “Celsius Solid Roof Installation Guide” video on the company’s Youtube Channel. The 10-minute video production features two highly experienced specialist roofing engineers Matt Williams and Gary Woods from the Synseal Technical Services department, working as a team to fit the Celsius Solid Roof above existing PVC-U window frames to mimic a typical UK conservatory retrofitstyle installation. Fully approved and registered by both the LABC and LABSS for installations in England, Wales and Scotland, the Celsius Solid Roof features an all-timber construction with Kingspan TEK structural insulated panels (SIPs) to deliver a truly warm roofing solution. This engaging video uses real time and time lapse footage, supported by graphic details where required, to demonstrate how swiftly and easily the solid roof can be assembled. Celsius Solid Roofs are manufactured in kits with components precisely dimensioned to meet specific site requirements. Starting with the eaves beam and wall starter timbers, Matt and Gary construct the timber and SIPs sub-structure in sequence on the video, before fitting the eaves tray sections, breather membrane, wall starter soaker, tile bar sections, rows of interlocking Envirotiles, dry-fitting hip caps and ridge caps, soffit and fascia boards and finally the gutter brackets and guttering assembly to complete the roof. www.celsiussolidroof.co.uk Enquiry No.233 www.mclink.co.uk/908-233

WINDOWS AND DOORS: DON’T THINK ‘WHAT’ – THINK ‘WHO’ If you think you can tell one window or door from another, that may be only part of the story because, as one specialist manufacturer explained to DABS, it’s much more about who is behind them. They’re rectangular, they’re made of PVC-U and they’re often white. At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking there’s not much difference between one window and another. Spend a little time comparing them, maybe even looking at the spec sheets, and a few differences might start to be visible. But the real differences may become alarmingly clear if, say, a window arrives a bit late or it doesn’t quite fit …or if you asked for something that isn’t rectangular or white, and the answer is ‘Will six weeks be OK?’ or maybe just a plain, old fashioned ‘no’. One solution is to find a manufacturer that has spent more than a decade not only refining the looks, performance and cost-effectiveness of its windows but also bringing in-house as many functions as possible. Tom Swallow, Sales and Marketing Director at Quickslide, explained “Many window and door manufacturers may contract-out some functions, such as woodgrain, colouring, and even making the double or triple glazed sealed units. Also many will buy-in specialist items like aluminium frames, patio and bi-fold doors. This means, the builder is not one but two steps away from most of the processes, with the inevitable impact on quality control and lead times and stock issues – not to mention paying two companies’ profits. “At Quickslide, we take pride in doing all these things in-house so we can not only offer tighter lead times and more competitive pricing but more importantly we take absolute responsibility for every function because it is all completely under our control.” Tel: 0333 2412235 Web: www.quickslide.co.uk Enquiry No.234 www.mclink.co.uk/908-234

So Garador, the UK’s leading manufacturer of garage doors, has come up with a solution – a new pricing and specification service called EasiQuote. Thanks to this brand new service,

Bespoke blinds specialist Appeal Home Shading has introduced a new collection of wire-free ULTRA Smart Blinds for residential windows and doors, giving clients the ability to remotely operate their blinds at the touch of a button. ULTRA Smart Blinds are operated via an easy-to-use one touch remote control or discreet wall-mounted control panel, and can be pre-programmed to open and close automatically, according to the time, temperature or light level. So how does it work? 1. The builder visits their local merchant to buy a garage door where they can obtain an EasiQuote form. 2. The builder then fills in the form with the details and returns it to their local merchant. 3. The merchant then sends the form to Garador’s EasiQuote team. 4. The Garador team return an updated form via email/ fax to the merchant branch, with an accurate price – it’s that simple! The great thing is the form provides a clear format for the builder to follow, so the merchant has all the information they need to provide the right door, at the best price possible. Simon Hipgrave argues: “We wanted to take all the ambiguity out of ordering a new garage door from your local builder’s merchant. We believe EasiQuote will help our customers to get the best possible door size and price for their project”. to find out more, please contact the Garador easiQuote team on 01935 443795 or visit www.garador.co.uk enquiry no.235. www.mclink.co.uk/908-235

HÖRMANN'S HST SIDE-SLIDING GARAGE DOOR COMBINES STYLE AND INNOVATION

The latest advances in garage door technology can be found in the side-sliding HST sectional from Hörmann, which offers unique features for special fitting situations.

An ideal fit if headroom is limited, the HST is perfect for creating a style statement while maintaining high levels of security. Side-sliding doors recess quietly and smoothly into tracks along the garage wall, offering an ultra-modern alternative to the traditional sectional door. Precise and easy door travel is achieved with Hörmann's unique twin rollers, which make the HST one of the most stable side-sliding sectionals on the market. The openended aluminium floor rail is easy to keep free from leaves and debris, all while guiding the door panels safely and securely – an essential feature for both the manual and automated versions. Double automatic safety cut-outs and the designed in finger trap protection add to the safe operation of this door. 42mm thick polyurethane insulation enhances the strength and rigidity of each panel and helps this door achieve a creditable thermal Uvalue of 1.8 W/m2K, for a fitted door. Not only is Hörmann’s HST innovative in its design, including its multiple security and safety aspects, it also boasts the world's first handle actuated, automatic wicket door function. This unique feature means that a simple press of the handle or handset will open the door to a selected point. Therefore, an alternative separate pedestrian entrance is created, giving the end user the ultimate in convenience. The HST is also compatible with Hörmann’s BiSecur Gateway. This two-way radio system

allows homeowners to use a smartphone to check whether the door is open or closed, and operate it with the push of a button. Using the same level of encryption as online banking, the system is highly secure.

Naturally, a wide range of decorative options are available, from different styles of windows to textured surface finishes and assorted handles - all of which can add to the door’s stunning kerb-side appeal. Whatever your design challenge, Hörmann has the products, expertise and knowledge to deliver the perfect style of garage door, whatever the budget. VUFOLD; BRINGING YOU THE COMPLETE PACKAGE IN BIFOLD DOORS, WINDOWS AND BLINDS The leading UK manufacturer of internal and external bi-folding doors has extended its range with the introduction of matching windows to its hugely popular Ultra and Supreme range of external doors. Vufold’s offer to trade and retail customers now provides the solution

to creating a unified and consistent look to bifold doors and windows. The double-glazed windows, which are manufactured in the UK to the same high standard as Vufold’s doors, are constructed using timber from the same suppliers so that consistency of quality is maintained throughout. The windows that match the Ultra range come in a choice of a grey or white aluminium exterior, with an oak veneer finish to the interior that has three coats of clear polyurethane which allows the beauty of the wood grain to show, adding a warm feel to the room. The Supreme range of windows is constructed from thermally broken aluminium frames set in a double glazed unit and comes in a choice of contemporary grey or stunning white aluminium powder coating. They are completed with a powder coated thermally broken aluminium cill and finished by a brushed graphite handle as standard. The external aluminium surfaces on both ranges are guaranteed against defects for 15 years. In addition to the Ultra and Supreme ranges, Vufold also manufactures three other styles of external bifold doors with its Prestige, Master and Elite ranges.

For inside the home customers can choose from the Edge, Inspire and Finesse internal door ranges, each with its own design of pane shapes, finishes and colours to the frames. To complement all eight ranges of bifold doors Vufold has its own exclusively designed range of blinds. Franke’s Maris Built Under ceiling hood features a ‘plug and play’ system that makes it so easy-to-install that the job can be completed in under 15 minutes, providing a quick turnaround for domestic and commercial projects. When fitted, the stainless steel hood with a white glass base creates a stylish, ‘floating on air’ appearance yet remains unobtrusive in the kitchen space. The hood operates in re-circulatory mode only, so is ideal for use in any kitchen where ducting is not possible. It has three speeds, plus an ‘intense’ speed setting for short, powerful bursts to remove unpleasant odours quickly and efficiently. It also uses low energy comfort lights to provide a more ambient light in the kitchen. FRANKE

BUSHBOARD NUANCE BATHROOM LAMINATE WALL PANELS REASSURINGLY 100% WATERPROOF Bushboard’s Nuance bathroom laminate wall panels are ideal for domestic and commercial bathrooms. Significantly they are the only brand on the market with no extrusions and a ‘no-wood’ patented polyurethane core, making them truly 100% waterproof for long-lasting, superior aesthetics, confidently backed by a 15 year guarantee. Panels can be used for conventional shower enclosures and around baths and uniquely, to create wetrooms and level access showering. Unlike other brands that are made from wood-based panels that will swell in contact with water, Nuance panels are uniquely manufactured from a patented core board that totally repels water and will not degrade over usage and time. The 2420mm high panels in a range of widths can be fitted from floor to ceiling, without any extrusions, resulting in large expanses of decorative surface where joins are virtually invisible to the eye. DEVA LAUNCHES NEW SENSOR TAP RANGE Deva, part of the Methven UK Group, has launched a new range of chrome sensor taps. Consisting of four different models, two deck mounted and two wall mounted, the contemporary designed taps are suitable for both cold and pre-mixed water. Each model has a 70 second flow cut off, meaning that water usage is limited should the tap not be automatically switched off via the sensor. The taps require a minimum water pressure of 0.5 bar and are recommended for use with a thermostatic blending valve to set a maximum water temperature. Able to run off battery or mains power, the taps all feature moisture and water resistant control units, plus vandal and scratch resistant sensor windows to increase product longevity. The additions further strengthen the existing Deva by Methven range of sensor taps, suitable for a wide range of both commercial and residential applications. Barbara Osborne, product manager at Methven UK, commented: “Taps featuring sensor technology have increased in popularity in the last few years and the addition of new styles and shapes gives specifiers greater design options for a variety of commercial environments.” METHVEN UK GROUP Enquiry No.437. www.mclink.co.uk/908-437

BRIGHT GOODS LED FILAMENT LAMPS RULE THE ROOST AT NANDO'S

As part of a major upgrade of lighting within the acclaimed chain of Nando's restaurants, The Light Corporation specified Bright Goods LED filament lamps to replace the existing mix of halogen and tungsten filament lighting.

Retractable Service Unit at Covent Garden, London

previously tried and tested a number of LED filament lamps, we made the decision to recommend Bright Goods products," says Darren Parnaby, of The Light Corporation. "The main reason for this is that the quality of the product is far greater than that of other manufacturers both in terms of light output, colour rendition and build quality." Bright Goods LED filament lamps have been used by Nando's since July 2015 when the first installation was completed

Enquiry No.250 www.mclink.co.uk/908-250

in the company's restaurant in Hove. Since then, numerous other locations in the Nando's chain have benefited from these innovative lamps including restaurants in Rotherham, Newcastle, Southampton, Huntingdon, Canary Wharf, Birmingham, and Bristol. In fact, this Bright Goods success story is not restricted to the UK but also embraces other prestigious overseas installations including an impressive Nando's project in Deira City, Dubai, and others as far afield as South Africa. Every Nando's restaurant is designed to have its own distinctive ambience. This attention to detail often extends to embrace handmade light fixtures and fittings including Czech glass fluid pendants, metal cages, wooden shades and wicker baskets. Nando's are always keen to support small, local artisans who frequently use materials when manufacturing light fittings which can be unsuitable for traditional hot lamps. The nature of cool running LED allows almost anything to become a light fitting, broadening the possibilities for Nando's lighting. Consequently, the versatility of the Bright Goods range means that the individual restaurant designs can be uncompromising and as spectacular as originally conceived. This aspect of Nando's design philosophy is recognised

and welcomed by Darren. He says, "We are fortunate that Nando's embrace design variety and diversity within their restaurants and allow us designers the autonomy and freedom to come up with new and exciting lighting to enhance and add to the interiors." "We're delighted that our LED filament lamps are proving to be such a hit with Nando's restaurants and their customers," says Saima Shafi, Marketing Director at Bright Goods. "We're constantly being told that not only do they look stylish but that they have captured the warm, cosy glow usually only found from energy-hungry incandescent. They are also recognised as being much more robust and reliable than tungsten and halogen lamps. Add to that their fantastic energy saving properties and it's easy to see why more and more bar, restaurant and hospitality chains are relying on Bright Goods as their first choice." It improves the consistency of the wall thickness and the smoothness of the pipe internal bore. Due to the large open plan areas within the mall and the high volumes of people, effective smoke ventilation is essential to ensure escape routes are kept clear if a fire should occur. As a result, the system uses 62 SE Controls’ vents and 20 of the company’s SECO N 24 40 twin chain actuators, as well as twelve 24 Volt dc OS2 controls panels and eight manual control point (MCP) switches. Working closely with smoke control specialist, Curvent international, the system, which also uses roof mounted fans to help vent smoke from the mall, is

controlled centrally by a repeater panel located in the main security office to provide additional safety and peace of mind. In the event of a fire, the mall’s smoke sensors trigger SE Controls’ EN12101-2:2003 compliant control panels and chain actuators to automatically open the window and ventilators, allowing smoke to be vented to assist escape. Manual Controls Point (MCP) switches are also incorporated within the design to allow manual actuation of the system. Some of the most influential elements in any hospital are obviously the ceilings because so many bed-ridden people spend so much time looking at them. Consequently, Troldtekt ceiling panels in natural wood colour, with integral LED light fittings, have been used throughout, reducing noise and ensuring pleasant acoustics as well as a healthy indoor climate.

absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. They are used to improve acoustics in many different projects, such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial and public buildings. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left unpainted or painted in virtually any RAL colour.

Simplicity pervades the new complex, coupled with the recognition that good social architecture is based on classic ingredients such as light and shade, materials, colours and green landscape elements. For example and particularly dramatic is the central core with its large spiral staircases and the very large skylight which plunges daylight from the fourth floor to the ground.

Troldtekt sustainability has also been recognised with certification at Silver level within the Cradle to Cradle concept and earns gold on 4 out of 5 criteria in the Cradle to Cradle certification version 3.1. This international certification has been achieved because the panels do not contain hazardous substances and can be recycled.

Danish manufactured Troldtekt acoustic tiles are specified throughout the UK and Europe and can be delivered as either FSC or PEFC certified panels. They are manufactured using 100% natural wood fibres and their benefits are high sound
