TOOLS & SITE EQUIPMENT JSP EUROPE’S foremost independent manufacturer of above-the-neck personal protective equipment (PPE), was first past the post in the UK and Europe after being awarded BSI Certification to the new PPE Regulation for a range of protective products.

Well-travelled staircases gain the Mighton Finish A striking cladding design was created for a pair of staircases at York University with installation being completed within the students’ three-week spring break, despite having to be constructed on site before being dismantled and removed for painting then brought back for reassembly. The unusual design incorporated 10mm shadow gaps, which required finishing in-situ to ensure the accuracy of the gaps before the MDF panels could be factory painted, as Robert Bailey-Hague, MD of subtractor Bailey-Hague Joinery explained: “Everything had to be completed within the strict schedule but this was the only way it could be done. The shadow gaps were an important part of the overall look of the staircases and it would have been impossible to achieve that by fitting painted panels on site. At the same time, on-site painting would have been out of the question, not least because of ventilation in the enclosed space.” Specialist paint supplier Mighton Products worked closely with Bailey-Hague Joinery in not only in choosing the right materials but also in producing a colour match for the nonstandard grey that was specified. The company had been using Mighton’s exterior products so had no hesitation in putting its interior range to work. A team of five joiners and one spray-painter worked on the project, with the panels making the 30 mile-plus round trip to Bayley-Hague’s spray-shop in Sherburn-in-Elmet. The moisture resistant MDF was treated with Mighton Ultra highbuild MDF Internal Primer and Internal Opaque Topcoat. Robert Bailey-Hague concluded: “It took a bit of careful management and planning to do it to the right specification and within the time limits but finished product looks good and the client is very happy with it.” www.mclink.co.uk/1023-148. ‘The Dangers of Switching Specification!’ By Wojciech Broyna – MD of Aluprof (UK) Limited Why do we specify products and services when we design our buildings or building refurbishment projects? Part of the reason is performance; it can be crucial to have the right products in the right places to ensure that they are fit for purpose and offer a qualified life expectancy with minimal maintenance. This is one of the main reasons behind the UK’s rapid take up of BIM and it is

hoped that the maintenance aspect of BIM will enable us to economically run our buildings in the future. If this was the only issue, then the specifiers job would be quite straightforward and the ‘equal or approved’ standpoint in specifications would be relatively simple to action at the time of procurement. Some products can be switched for similar products with little impact on the building, but one of the crucial areas where this late switch can, and often does go wrong, is in the façade or

window specification. Few buildings are designed in the same way, so the application of say a curtain wall system requires both specification and careful detail design. Furthermore, the design of the external envelope is critical both for initial waterproofing the building for second fix and the avoidance of latent defects such as interface leaks. This is the most critical area of design, the façade interface with the rest of the buildings external envelope. Different systems will require alternative details, it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ approach. If we allowed detail design to occur late, at the procurement stage, all but the best of the façade installers would struggle with detailing, however, this is exactly what is happening today every time we make a late switch to a facade system close to its anticipated order date. If the specification is to be changed, then the design team really need to ensure that it is not only done on cost alone, but the same or better quality solutions are found which can be procured with a complete package such as warranties, acceptable lead times, quality of finish, performance, etc. At the point of early design, often the aluminium systems company specified has a crucial input into product

selection and design. Today, design input often leads to some bespoke profile design, which is often cost effective offering a simple solution to a complex design requirement. This critical detailed design can be lost as soon as the system is switched unless the systems company providing the replacement system is consulted and can meet the requirements of the project. With a large systems company such as Aluprof, working on the Value Management of a project at the very early stages, options such as choice of fabrication location can be explored to offer the best value and quality. An example of this could be complex details within a unitised project where a local fabricator could produce all the standard units and where complex, say curved units, are manufactured competitively elsewhere where specialist equipment is available. The key to any programmes would be to add value, not in cost terms, but in quality and time performance. As we are all too aware, time delays on site carry significant costs for both main contractor and consequently subcontractor. On all projects, the systems company has an important part to play. If using a commercial installer for the first time, a discussion with the systems company supplying the material will always ensure that they are involved and committed to the final supply chain. The systems company can play a big part in cost savings, but the main thing to remember is that aluminium used remains at a fairly constant cost, and that it is the processes and detailing of these systems that can save costs. To deal with the growing number of facade specifications calling for Aluprof’s high performance architectural aluminium systems, the company has recently opened a London office. Based at the Business Design Centre in Islington, the location is ideal to offer advice to architects and contractors across the city and the South East. Staffed by two full time architectural advisors, the office also offers a ‘drop-in’ centre for specification advice and support. It is recommended that early specification advice is sought very early in the initial design process. Aluprof’s extensive range of systems which include unitised curtain walling, sliding folding doors and a wide range of window systems are increasingly being specified on a variety of residential and commercial projects across the UK. All systems are designed and installed by selected, specially trained companies to ensure each product meets the Aluprof exacting standards. Further information is available on the company website at aluprof.co.uk and specialist advice is available directly from Aluprof UK offices on 0161 941 4005. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-500 ENQUIRY-Card 500

ventilator is now in position and can be overdressed with the protective flashing of the obligatory cavitray at the appropriate stage in the building programme. (The Type E cavitray provides an easy way of introducing the requisite DPC cavitray protection within the cavity wall).

VENTING THE EXTENSION WHERE IT JOINS THE HOUSE? There is commonly a requirement to provide roof ventilation when extending a property. Where a flat roof extension is added to an existing building, provision is required at the attachment point (the roof/wall intersection) with corresponding ventilation opposite on the outer edge of the extension. With an airflow rating of 25,000mm² per running metre, the Roof Abutment Ventilator from Cavity Trays of Yeovil provides a novel way of achieving compliance, and does so in a manner that is compatible with the damp protection measures demanded within the Building Regulations. A timber upstand is fixed to the existing wall utilising vertical stand-off battens to maintain an airflow path between it and around the decking edge. The Type RAV-FL is secured by opening like a book and fixing via its pre-drilled holes to the top of the timber upstand. The remaining section of the ventilator is then closed so it finishes against the masonry where it also is secured through its pre-drilled holes. The

Ventilation at the opposite wall of the extension can be provided by a choice of strip ventilators offered by Cavity Trays of Yeovil, pending whether a soffit, fascia or hidden flow path is preferred. The ventilator strips are also offered in a range of colours and airflow ratings. The expanding range of products offered by Cavity Trays to protect the building envelope offers the specifier new efficient compatible construction options that are performance warranted. Hospital pedestrian crossing sealed with safety in mind Firmer faster fixing from Samac Fixings and fastening specialists Samac has launched the latest addition to its Atlas Fixings range. New Atlas Screws are masonry frame screws that offer a fast, secure fixing to masonry, concrete and block work without the need for a plug. Atlas screws are designed to screw directly into both frame and masonry eliminating the need for a plug offering a quick, hassle-free and reliable alternative to hammer and frame fixings. Like the whole Atlas range, Atlas screws from Samac feature a zinc and yellow passivated corrosion resistant finish for longer lasting life and have a thread that has high pull out resistance and a continuous screw thread to ensure fixing along the entire length of the masonry anchor. Because this is a non-expansion fixing without the need for a plug, it is suitable for close to edge fixing and close anchor spacing and can be used in high temperature settings without the risk of a plastic plug melting. The Farrington Road company also gained a further three nominations making it one of its best years yet. David Jones, Managing Director of VEKA Group, who collected the award said: “Having been awarded 'Business of the Year' twice in the past, this year we were absolutely thrilled to have been named ‘Employer of the Year'. As one of Burnley's biggest employers, we have around 400 people from the local area working across all our varied departments and we are very proud of the benefits we offer. “The evening was already one of great celebration for the team as we were nominated in a number of categories, including 2017's 'Business of the Year', 'John Kennedy Apprenticeship' and 'Manufacturing Excellence'. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-101 ENQUIRY-Card 101

The Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital have successfully sealed their pedestrian crossings following the installation of Resiblock Ultra Matt. Ten separate crossings, which make up the key pedestrian routes at the Newcastle Hospital, have been sealed to prevent paver destabilisation from a variety of vehicles including cars, ambulances, mini-buses and HGV vehicles. Paving at the crossings had previously failed, resulting in an extremely dangerous trip hazard, and naturally the Royal Victoria Infirmary did not want this risk again. With the use of Marshalls White Marker concrete blocks, which uses a layer of coated glass beads for excellent reflective capabilities, conventional sealers would be wholly unsuitable as they would adversely affect the reflective capabilities of this particular block, therefore negating its purpose as a safety feature. Following discussions between Resiblock and client Healthcare Services Ltd, the specialist pre-polymer urethane (SPPU) Resiblock Ultra Matt was selected as this could seal both the Marshall White Marker Blocks and the Weinberger Clay Blocks that were on-site. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-102 ENQUIRY-Card 102

New Mighton Machine Receives Glowing Review The range of machinery from Mighton Products has grown again with the recent addition of the innovative X-Cut™ machine. Developed by Mighton’s in-house experts to improve the painstaking task of cross-jointing glazing bars, this compact semi-automatic milling machine measures just under 40cm wide and 45cm high. Mighton gave Tibby Singh, the former BBC Young Carpenter of the Year and now a professional tools and tech tester and reviewer, the opportunity to trial the X-Cut™ machine and see if mighty things really do come in small packages. Tibby considered the task that the XCut™ has been produced to tackle: “Making any cross detail look strong and well finished can be a tricky task especially if you’re short on time. Various shortcut methods exist of course, such as using jointing clips, but none of these compare to an authentic cross joint,” he said.

“There are a number of 45 degree angles incorporated in a traditional cross joint, making it a little more complex to achieve, so I was surprised how well the X-Cut™ machine simplifies the process. The machine itself was quick and easy to set up, the tools were easy to interchange and there was no lengthy manual or complicated computer program to learn before being able to get started,” he continued. Once assembled, the X-Cut™ machine adjusts to accept bead profiles measuring anywhere from 9mm to 19mm in height and 12mm to 38mm wide. Any lengths over 500mm can be used with the option to add extending arms either side of the machine for ease of loading longer sections. “After slotting my chosen bead into place the machine’s three cutters then worked together to produce the cross cut,” explained Tibby. “Two cutters, one on either side, move up and down to

produce two clean 45 degree cut outs whilst any dust is removed through the 63mm extraction outlet. This is followed by a third flute cutter gliding horizontally through the bead to create a hollowed-out section designed to accept other interlocking parts. Speed control is variable between 12,000 and 18,000 RPM to suit different materials, but on average it takes only 15 seconds before the cutting is complete. “Even at this speed the X-Cut™ maintains a consistent high level of finish,” added Tibby, who writes about tool tech for trade magazines as well as demonstrating and evaluating products in the UK and overseas. “This is aided by features such as the thickness gauge tool. When setting the cutting depth required the X-Cut™ is designed to automatically increase measurements by half a millimetre, ensuring all components comfortably slot together every time.”

Aggregate Industries Keeps it Light for High Rise Apartments Aggregate Industries’ Lytacrete solution was the product of choice when it came to helping to introduce an additional floor midconstruction at a new seven story upmarket apartment scheme in Southampton. Located on Albert Road South, Southampton, the luxury apartment block was originally conceived as a six story scheme. Part-way through construction, plans were redesigned to include an additional floor – creating 20 apartments (7 one bedroom, 12 two bedroom and 1 three bedroom) for the

area. The challenge for Wright Investments was to include another floor without overloading the existing structure that was already in place – no easy feat. However, fortunately this was made possible with the help of Aggregate Industries who suggested Lytacrete – a

specialist lightweight solution – in place of conventional weighty concrete. Helping to revolutionise modern construction, Lytacrete concrete, which is formed using Lytag secondary aggregate, can be up to 50 per cent lighter than traditional comparable materials. As such, by using Lytacrete, Wright Investments will be able to reduce the dead load of the construction by approximately 7620kN over normal weight concrete whilst maintaining its structural integrity. Crucially for the project, this has enabled reduced size columns, beams and slabs, allowing greater room the developers to add the additional required floor. Steve Curley from Aggregate Industries comments: “Changing the original design plan mid-way through construction is common, but can present a series of challenges for the contractor. Although there were a

number of traditional alternatives available, the use of Lytacrete eliminated the need for expensive restructuring works to support an additional floor, which most importantly helped keep the project to budget and schedule.” In production for more than 50 years, Lytag secondary aggregate is made using innovative technology which transforms fly ash into small pellets which are then heated to 1,100°C. The pellets formed are rounded in shape and range in size from 14 mm down to fines and can be used as a superior, consistent, lightweight aggregate. In total, 420m3 of Lytacrete was supplied for the completion of 7 storeys in the Albert Road South apartment scheme, due for completion in 2018. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-510 www.mclink.co.uk/1022-104 ENQUIRY-Card 104 510 ENQUIRY-Card

Can radioactive radon seep into your buildings?

The most effective protection methods are those that prevent radioactive radon from entering – usually by permeating through the floor. However, measuring the flow of radon through a material or structure has traditionally been slow, complex and very expensive – but now Versaperm has introduced a permeability meter that can measure this flow through either a sample of building material or a complex, multilayer, structural element. Radon contributes a massive 50% of the overall average radiation dose across the UK and, after cigarettes, is the largest cause of lung cancer in the UK. The Versaperm permeability meter is

simple to use, requiring minimal training at most, yet it offers high precision and repeatability. It is accurate in measuring radon in the Parts Per Million (PPM) range. The new system can optionally be configured to measure permeability for other gasses including water vapour, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, solvents, oxygen, hydrogen, helium and many more. The equipment is easy to use, highly automated and computerised. Versaperm also offers a comprehensive permeability and diffusive flow lab testing service for companies who don’t wish to purchase their own equipment.

Ibstock offers one lucky builder the trip of a lifetime

More than 83% of British builders work more than 41 hours per week, new research by Tarmac Cement has found. In addition, 84% of the builders surveyed said they work at least one weekend per month, with a whopping 27% working every single weekend. And it seems the pressures of the job are getting in the way of family occasions as well. 76% of those surveyed had missed an event due to work – with 23% missing a birthday or anniversary and 27% missing a holiday.

Builders are being offered the chance to win a trip of a lifetime worth £2,000 as part of a nationwide competition from Ibstock to celebrate the upcoming launch of two new bricks to its Tradesman range. The competition will run from June 1st to September 30th 2017. During this time, every pack of Tradesman bricks purchased will give builders the chance to enter into a draw to win £2,000 worth of holiday vouchers to spend on a holiday destination of their choice. There are also three prizes each month of £100 Buyagift vouchers and the first 100 builders to enter will be sent a Tradesman t-shirt. To enter, all builders need to do is send in their proof of purchase, either by emailing a picture of it to tradesman@ ibstock.co.uk, faxing it to 0844 800 4876 or posting it to Ibstock FAO Marketing. Each pack purchased counts as one entry so the more packs purchased, the higher the chances of winning!

KALWALL® SHEDS LIGHT ON EDUCATION Kalwall® translucent cladding has been extensively used for the impressive refurbishment of the main teaching block at Featherstone High School in Southall, Middlesex. The original 1958 concrete framed building was failing due to decay and ingress of water and needed structural stabilisation. DSP Architecture were appointed to repair and encapsulate the frame, resulting in a stunning transformation into a very modern teaching block befitting its ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating and complementing the other new school buildings. The renovation required removal of the old concrete spandrel panels, repairs to the concrete structure and then overcladding with Kalwall panels supported

on a new steel frame which was added to extend the floor space. The build was completed in two phases over the course of a year while the school continued to operate. The ability to keep the school functioning while the work was completed meant minimum disruption to staff and students. This meant there was minimal use of temporary classrooms during the works, thereby saving time and money. The two fully replaced elevations are a perfect example of how Kalwall can be used for the refurbishment of old and failing cladding and for aged buildings. The new façades allow floor to ceiling diffused and healthy daylight to flood the interior while providing privacy for students and removing any distractions.

An integrated row of clerestory windows provides ventilation and limited views to the outside. Studies show there is a high correlation between daylighting and increased human comfort. Kalwall eliminates all shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade which not only reduces eye fatigue but also enhances concentration. The system also enhances simplicity by doing away with the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is flooded with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. The standard Kalwall 70mm thick panel offers insulation up to 0.28W/m2K - equivalent to a cavity filled solid wall. Case studies and technical information are available from Structura UK Ltd on tel: 01233 501 504 or by visiting www.structurauk.com/kalwall

Geraldine Walder project architect at DSP comments, “The client specifically requested Kalwall for this project after seeing how well it worked on our previous project for the adjoining 6th form building. The advantage of it being fabricated offsite meant disruption and time on-site were minimised while the combination of high insulation, natural daylight and ventilation means reduced energy costs”. Structura UK is the exclusive distributor for Kalwall translucent daylight building systems for England, Wales and Northern Ireland and a leading supplier, fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling, rainscreens, glass atria, windows and other architectural glass building products. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-514 ENQUIRY-Card 514

Safeguard’s Dryrod damp-proofing rods gain WTA approval The innovative Dryrod damp-proofing rods from Safeguard Europe – the UK’s leading specialist in damp-proofing and waterproofing technology – have been accredited by the German WTA organisation for creating remedial dampproof courses (DPCs) against capillary absorption in masonry, otherwise known in the UK as rising damp.

porous and either highly alkaline – such as in new mortar – or with low alkalinity (old mortar). The rods are also effective when installed in warm or cold walls – even if the wall is freezing. Heritage sites will also appreciate that the treatment can be invisible because rods can be removed from the mortar after six months when their active ingredient has dispersed into the surrounding masonry. Then the drill holes can be hidden by repointing with colour matched mortar. Backed by Safeguard Europe’s

comprehensive technical support, Dryrod is supplied complete with all information needed for a successful installation. This includes the number and depth of drill holes required for various wall thicknesses and types, together with suggested drilling patterns to treat stretcher bond and Flemish bond brickwork and irregular stone. www.dryrods.com www.mclink.co.uk/1023-520 ENQUIRY-Card 520

The WTA, which translates into English as the Scientific and Technical Work Group for Building Conservation and Preservation of Monuments*, was founded in 1977 and carries out research, testing and approval of technical practices and materials throughout Europe. The WTA accreditation is a perfect accompaniment to Dryrod’s British Board of Agrément (BBA) certification, awarded in 2015, which establishes that it is effective against the ingress of moisture for at least 20 years. Dryrod was launched in 2014 and is designed to be the fastest, cleanest, easiest and most effective rising damp treatment on the market. It is a synthetic rod made from advanced polymers that is impregnated with a silane/siloxane material so that it forms a DPC in brick, coursed stone, rubble

infill and cavity walls. It has radically changed the way specifiers and contractors approach DPC installation, as it guarantees correct damp-proofing delivery each and every time. The standard 180mm long rods are simply inserted into 12mm drilled holes at 120mm centres along continuous horizontal mortar lines. Not only does this method ensure deep penetration, but it also delivers the exact dose in each hole without the spillage and mess which occurs with other methods of installation. Any thickness of wall can be treated because the rods can be inserted end-to-end or trimmed back, depending on the wall thickness. Unlike any other product on the market, the rods can also be installed effectively in highly saturated walls that are very

Bostik becomes official partner of Tour de France

Superquilt multi-layer foil earns agrement approval

Tackle large scale projects with the MarathonTM sleeve from Purdy

Densoseal 16A Chosen for Thames Water Cable Entries

Bostik has signed up as an official partner of iconic cycling event, the Tour de France. The new sponsorship agreement upgrades the firm’s previous participation as an official supplier in 2015 and 2016 and will run for the next two years. The event will be used as a platform to communicate and promote the Bostik brand to a large global audience. The 2017 event, the 104th time the race has been held, takes place from 1st-23rd July starting with the Grand Départ from Düsseldorf in Germany. The 3,540 kilometer route across 21 stages will also visit Belgium and Luxembourg. 198 riders from 22 competing teams will encounter some of the most challenging terrain in world cycling before crossing the finish line on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on 23rd July.

The effectiveness of SuperQuilt, part of the YBS range, as a single layer insulation solution for use beneath pitched roof rafters, in either new-build or refurbishment situations has been underlined by the award of a coveted BBA Certificate. Agrement Certificate 17/5388 explains in detail how the already widely specified, multi-layer foil insulation can be used to retain energy within attic or habitable loft spaces: cutting fuel bills, improving comfort levels for building occupants and adding value. Importantly it can be employed to address detail areas such as the cheeks of dormers, dwarf walls, bonnet hips and other features. The Certification comes after prolonged evaluation by the British Board of Agrement and covers such considerations as related Building Regulation matters.

Purdy’s Marathon™ sleeve is an essential piece of kit, making large scale decorating projects a breeze. Developed by Purdy’s expert technical team, the durable cover will deliver performance over 40 hours of constant use – giving consistently high performance from beginning to end. It is often the tool of choice for contractors working on large scale, professional projects. Made using a blend of nylon and polyester fabric, Marathon™ lasts longer, paints further and leaves less lint on the painted surface. Other rollers can leave an uneven appearance when they become worn but the durability and quality of the Marathon™ sleeve means a smoother finish – ideal when working on more challenging projects that need consistent coverage and a great final appearance.

Flood Control International of Tavistock, Devon, are completing a project at a Thames Water site near Maple Cross, Berkshire of sealing cable entries with Winn & Coales Densoseal 16A. There will be further Thames Water sites to follow in a major refurbishment of their sites resulting from a Flood Prevention report. Densoseal 16a is a non-setting, selfsupporting mastic which may be applied to wet surfaces and will seal ducts and conduits against ingress of water and gas. It is suitable for CHP and biogas projects. It complies with British Telecom Specification M212C. It is suitable for sealing cable ducts, conduits and service entry pipes or sleeves, particularly below ground level, to prevent entry of water or gas into buildings.

They can be sure that all new JSP products will continue to meet the new Regulation – the entire JSP range will be certified to the PPE Regulation by its enforcement date of 21 April 2018, many years ahead of the 2023 official deadline. Matthew Judson, Technical Director at JSP said: “Always first off the mark in ensuring safety, JSP has gained advanced certification from the BSI across a large selection of our world-renowned products, including head, hearing and respiratory protection. “Gaining this important certification means that all JSP products will legally be able to be sold in both the EU and the UK, and demonstrates our total readiness for the coming Regulation, well before we need to be by law. It is a huge achievement for the company, and one for which we have worked extremely hard. JSP customers will therefore never need to have any worries about product compliance. “If you buy now, you are safe in the knowledge that JSP products will always comply with the PPE Regulation. JSP has received an unprecedented four BSI CE certificates for its EVO2ÂŽ, 3, 4, 5 and EVOÂŽ Full Brim industrial safety helmets, as well as its Force™8 half mask and

PressToCheck™ P3 Filters, which enable wearers to easily and reliably check the face-fit of their half mask, and its SonisŽ hearing protectors.

Future trends for plumbing contractors Do you have the right tool for the job? Remember avocado bathroom suites, shag-pile carpets and wood chip walls? We would rather put these 80’s décor trends behind us. However, there’s plenty of new trends that are going to come our way — particularly those that could impact the world of plumbing. Here, John Cove, marketing manager at power tool accessories and hand tool specialist, Starrett, looks at trends for bathrooms, kitchens and plumbing and what these trends mean for contractors. Natural and recycled materials Using natural and organic materials like timber is becoming increasingly popular in bathroom and kitchen design. Ceramics, glass, metal and stone are familiar materials for bathroom design, however we are now seeing timber accompany these classic textures in the form of wall panels, furniture and decorative features. Open brickwork and rustic features also play a key role in the latest design trends, all of which could provide challenges for installers. For example, cutting rustic wooden sections or panelling for a small space with a jig saw could result in chipped and unsightly edges if you’re not using a saw blade designed to cleanly cut this material. Installers need a jig saw blade

that cuts on both the up and down stroke to reduce break out and chipping to a minimum, such as Starrett’s Dual Cut blade. Technology We are entering the age of the smart home, with technology to monitor and control our lives entering every room of the house. We are used to ‘touch-free’ faucets in public bathrooms, but the digitalisation of our homes will see gadget developments such as intelligent taps, which use facial recognition to automatically adjust water temperature and flow to personal preference. Programmable features, such as timed shower settings, will also become popular as we adapt to new smart meters keeping our energy use in check. Increasing numbers of consumers are also opting for television and touchscreen technology to feature prominently in bathroom designs. Adding an abundance of tech into confined and humid spaces will result in the need to manage electrical outlets, hide cables and supply safe power solutions. Consumers will expect all of this without compromising the clean, high quality finish that completes their

design vision. This means that installers must be equipped with a range of saw blades and machines that can cut various materials. Mounting faucets and screens on or into ceramic, glass or stone surfaces or panels will require hardened tools, like diamond-coated blades and hole saws to ensure smooth surface finishes and edges. Size and shape Another trend we’ve seen emerging is unusually shaped bathtubs. Stepping away from the traditional bath shapes, designers are introducing unusual bathtubs in square, trapezoid and egg shapes. Many of these new designs also use modern faucets or drainage methods, including faucet pipes which

come up from the floor and pour into the tub. Modern tastes are also leaning towards ‘floating’ or standalone sinks, rather than cabinet integrated styles, which can also provide difficulties in ensuring that pipes are hidden from sight. Integrating unusual shapes or ensuring pipe work is hidden from view will require precise and intricate cutting through surfaces like tiles, flooring and wall panels. Tools that are purpose built to deliver detailed and complex shape cutting, while also being able to cut through strong materials like stone or glass without damaging the appearance of the material, are vital for this. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-588 ENQUIRY-Card 588

remaining vapour-permeable. Once cured, Vandex BB75 tanking slurry forms a waterproof coating that can be employed against both passive and active water pressures up to 7 bar – and so is particularly suited to waterproofing underground. It will bridge up to 0.4mm in concrete and can be used to fill cracks and protect areas of potential cracking. Once set, the coating resists extremes of frost and heat as well as carbon dioxide, so it can also be employed as an anti-carbonation coating as part of a surface protection system for concrete in accordance with EN1504-2. It is also tested for use in contact with potable water supplies. The properties of Vandex BB75 can be further enhanced by using Vandex PK75 or Cemelast Liquid polymers as a gauging solution – the resulting products offering improved workability and flexibility. Variants of BB75 include

Vandex BB White which, as the name suggests, is a white version based on Portland cement. Its characteristic white colour makes it particularly suitable for use on exposed surfaces such as potable water reservoirs. Its companion product, Vandex BB75 Z, is formulated to have enhanced sulphate resistance, making it ideal for use in sewage treatment planes and in foul inspection chamber refurbishment. With the Vandex BB range, Safeguard Europe has provided specifiers, surveyors and installers with an easy but durable answer to common waterproofing tasks. Painting to protect the environment

Ecopro Silicate Masonry Paint will tackle the damp problem by enabling this windmill’s wall to breathe, while providing a long lasting water and weather resistant barrier.

Paint features in just about every building project, but how often do you consider its properties beyond colour and performance? What about its environmental credentials and sustainability?

Winner of two Daily Telegraph Homebuilding and Renovating Awards, the restoration of two miners’ cottages by Design Storey called for Ecopro Matt Emulsion on plastered walls. Photo courtesy: Design Storey.

Specifying for sustainability, Downs Merrifield chose Ecopro Matt Emulsion for this new build home. Here, white walls pick up a warm glow from the timber stairs, doors and flooring. (Photo courtesy: Rob Boltman Photography and Downs Merrifield architects).

Harmful ingredients Conventional, acrylic based paints contain two potentially harmful components: volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and acrylic softeners. Both escape into the atmosphere during painting and for many years after application, contributing to greenhouse gases. Acrylic based paints can also adversely affect walls. It is now widely recognized that they prevent a wall from breathing, which can lead to moisture damage such as blown plaster.

The breathability means moisture can permeate out through the paint, preventing damage to walls and significantly reducing their maintenance lifecycle.

Sustainable specification VOCs are found to varying degrees even in water based paints. The easiest way to ensure you’re creating a sustainable, environmentally sound specification is to check the paint is EU Ecolabel approved. This stringent standard covers every aspect of a product’s manufacture, use and disposal. Earthborn paints have achieved this demanding standard. Made without oils or acrylics, they are virtually VOC free and highly breathable. That means they do not give off any toxic emissions, so are much better for the environment as well as the health of building occupants.

Doors, Windows & Rooflights 33

Winning the war on noise Unwanted and intrusive noise is impacting on more and more lives; especially as pressure to build homes on brownfield sites is remorseless. Chris Coxon, Head of Marketing at Eurocell, considers the issue in the context of doors and windows. The issue of noise and how to deal with it in new housing developments is becoming a more complex one. Planning policy and the demand for city centre locations means that brownfield sites which were once considered unattractive are now under development. How loud is too loud? The WHO guidelines for community noise recommend less than 30 Aweighted decibels (dB(A)) in bedrooms during the night for a sleep of good quality and less than 35 dB(A) in classrooms to allow good teaching and learning conditions. The WHO guidelines for night noise recommend less than 40 dB(A) of annual average (Lnight) outside of bedrooms to prevent adverse health effects from night noise. (Lnight is the equivalent continuous noise level over the night-time period (23:00 to 07:00)). Masonry mass in really important in defeating sound. However, as Approved Document E of the Building Regulations 2010 – which devotes significant attention to the detailing of various wall types – acknowledges: completely sealing structures against noise is impossible – especially where one needs to punch through it with doors and windows, so creating a vulnerability to sound in the envelope. And here the

Regulation is not helpful, barely considering the issue at all. Approved Document N, dedicated to glazing, is similarly silent, concerning itself only with safety; while AD L – the Building Regulation most cited in the context of doors and windows, troubles itself only with energy – and not sound – efficiency. For guidance then, we must look elsewhere: such as in BS EN 12758, Glass in Building – Glazing and Airborne Sound Insulation and BS 8233 2014 Sound Insulation and Noise Reduction. The latter is a comprehensive document deeply complex in calculation and detail, and is not to be approached lightly or by the generalist; while BS EN 12758 gives values for the sound insulation of windows. The first thing to consider in respect of doors and windows is fit and quality – an area where modern PVC-U items may be thought to have advantages. Not only are multi-chambered PVC frame profiles inherently sound attenuating, they are also warp-free. This is important as any kind of distortion in the frame can seriously reduce the effectiveness of the seal. Windows reveals should also be well sealed to prevent sound getting into the wall cavity. At a junction with a separating wall, it is desirable to close the external cavity with a flexible closer,

such as Rockwool. If the cavity is likely to be filled for purposes of thermal efficiency, then the closer is unnecessary. Some window specifications see the addition of an EDPM strip, fitted to the exterior of the window frame and lapping onto the cladding of the building. Designed to improve weather-tightness, these also provide increased noise attenuation. It may be also important to consider other aspects of the glazing system. Trickle vents, for instance, are a pathway for noise; acoustic-rated vents are available, although these are a costly addition. In respect of doors, the mass – as alluded to above in the context of masonry – is important as is, like windows, fit. It is essential that the door forms an airtight seal against its frame when closed, and joints between wall and frame properly stopped. Thresholds are necessary and even escutcheons for keyholes should be considered in the most extreme circumstances. Surprisingly perhaps, double-glazing does not necessarily perform significantly “better than a single pane of mass equivalent to the thicker pane of the sealed unit, and should be used in a frame with good seals to realize its full insulating potential” (BS 8233). As the thickness and mass of a pane of glass increase, so does its sound

insulation qualities, yet not exponentially and there are obviously practical limits to this. Laminated glass performance, when formulated with resins that have enhanced sound attenuating properties, is better than single pane – ‘monolithic’ – glasses yet are often most encountered in safety and security applications. Interestingly, gas filling of insulated double glazing units has no effect on sound insulation and, with some types of gases, may be detrimental in the face of low-resonance noise such as that emanating from traffic and trains. Again, the width of a cavity in a sealed unit has little effect except in tripleglazed applications; yet much of that improvement may be attributed to the additional mass of the third glass pane. Despite this, a cleverly designed unit – combined with engineered profiled frame materials, and part of a window properly fitted and sealed – can achieve a decent degree of sound insulation, and in excess of that provided by more traditional alternatives. Such a design would necessarily involve a laminated pane, and varying thicknesses of pane. www.eurocell.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/1023-547 ENQUIRY-Card 547

Add a purist, natural feel to your home with a Garador crafted timber door

Garador’s expertly crafted timber Up & Over garage doors give a traditional style and feel to any property. There are two ranges of timber Up & Over garage doors: the Solid Cedar range and the Elizabethan range. Both ranges have a variety of designs and timber stain options to choose from.

The Solid Cedar range is constructed solely from beautiful red cedar, while the Elizabethan range offers a more complex assortment of designs which are constructed from solid red cedar combined with a plywood backing. The selection of designs on offer in the Solid Cedar range is impressive, with the classical Vertical Cedar and Horizontal

Cedar door designs, providing a timeless look that would enhance the appearance of any home. More sophisticated door designs, such as the Ashton, deliver a unique look and have windows at the top of the door panel to allow daylight inside the garage. Garador’s Elizabethan range offers a more complex selection of designs Vertical sliders – traditionally known as sash windows – are among today’s most coveted window styles, and not only in the heritage market with which they’re most associated. With its new VEKA Vertical Slider, VEKA Group has embraced traditional design cues to create a window that is suitable for conservation areas and listed buildings, while offering features and performance that would be entirely at home in a luxurious new-build development. VEKA Group’s Marketing Director Dawn Stockell explains: “Vertical sliding windows have seen a great renaissance in recent years, due in no small part to their beautiful aesthetics. Original timberframed units however are known for being draughty and hard to maintain, and can even swell and contract from season to season. There are no such worries with the VEKA Vertical Slider, which can even achieve the revered A+ Window Energy Rating depending on the glazing fitted.” The system couples the industry’s leading fully sculptured PVC-U profile with practical and stylish innovations, including neat sash stop end caps to keep leaves and other debris out of the profile, and optional run-through sash horns for an authentic period appearance. Clip-in horns are also available, or for a more contemporary look, the VEKA Vertical Slider can be specified without horns.

New VEKA Vertical Slider raises the bar The brand new VEKA Vertical Slider was one of several innovative and exciting window and door systems debuted by VEKA Group at the FIT Show 2017, and it has all the hallmarks to become a modern classic.

which are constructed from solid red cedar and plywood. The Elizabethan’s elegant Seymour design, for instance, is constructed with carefully crafted strips of cedar wood, each of which features a stop chamfer and several styled arches uniformly spaced at the top of the door; all positioned against a plywood backing. Each and every Garador timber Up & Over garage door is available in a choice of 6 long-lasting stain options. These distinct variations in colour enhance the appearance of the wood adding a further dimension to a door that is constructed from natural materials. The colour stain options available include Light Oak, Antique Oak, Mahogany, Walnut, Chestnut and Ebony; the choice of lighter and darker colour stains helps to bring the door to life in different ways and gives you the opportunity to find a perfect finish for any home. All of Garador’s Up and Over timber garage doors are built around a steel box section chassis, which provides a rigid and stable door design that is sure to last well into the future. A further choice of side-hinged and personnel timber garage doors are also available, to further complement the Garador timber Up & Over garage door range. These beautiful precision-engineered natural timber doors are a great way to add real style and value to any property. “Our technicians have tackled the shortcomings of timber-framed sash windows head on”, Dawn continues. “A bottom gasket minimises draughts, and a variety of opening options puts paid to the notion that vertical sliders aren’t versatile!” The VEKA Vertical Slider is available fully mechanically jointed and with the option of a deep bottom rail – also mechanically jointed – and of course, both sashes can be tilted inwards, providing greater ventilation and ease of cleaning. The options don’t end there, with VEKA Group’s full Variations suite of 29 colour and woodgrain finishes available for the VEKA Vertical Slider, and the most popular shades provided X-Stock or within a fourweek period. Dawn adds: “We kept fabricators and installers in mind as well as homeowners while developing the VEKA Vertical Slider. Its slim outer frame, for example, allows for flexibility in installation, and it is fully compatible with existing VEKA fixing brackets. 28mm is the standard glazing option, but other thicknesses can easily be accommodated with alternative beading. Not all pocket doors are the same… If you are looking for a pocket door solution, there are 3 things worth bearing in mind.

Tip Two: Have a look at the list of parts. Does it include a jamb kit? What about a metal anti-warp profile for the underside of your door? The jamb kit is a timber lining kit that attaches to the pocket door framework that covers the edges of the door when it is closed, so you cannot see the top of the door or into the pocket. It gives the pocket door installation a professional finish. An anti-warp profile fits into a routed channel on the underside of the door and slides on a spigot on the floor guide. If your door does warp a metal anti-warp profile won’t and the pocket door will continue to slide smoothly. Tip Three: Consider the quality and durability of the system. After all, you are installing it in the wall, and you want it to last. Check the guarantee. Has the system been tested for strength? Have the durability of the runners been tested? Have any steel parts of the frame been corrosion tested to prove they are suitable bathrooms, utilities and basements?

When you are choosing a pocket door solution you want to make sure that it will be easy to install and has a professional finish. Tip One: Have a look at the installation instructions. Does assembly involve cutting pocket verticals or horizontals to make the system fit the door panel size? Does installation involve aligning separate components i.e. the track and the pocket? Have a look for design features that help with alignment. Does the track and pocket assemble to create a single unit for insertion into the studwork? Does it have a self-centering floor guide that fixes to, and so aligns automatically with, the pocket?

Astraseal commercial uses REHAU Geneo for £1m Landmark Berkeley Homes Project Astraseal Commercial completed the latest Waterfront phase of Berkeley Homes’ landmark Royal Arsenal Riverside development in Woolwich using windows and doors fabricated in the innovative REHAU GENEO 6 chamber fibre composite system.

Berkeley Homes switched to REHAU GENEO from the aluminium and timber composite systems which had been used on the earlier phases of the project because REHAU’s commercial team were able to work with Astraseal to convince them of the thermal, acoustic and security benefits of the Passivhaus certified and fully recyclable GENEO window system. The 86mm GENEO system is among the most energy efficient profile systems available - with Uw values from 1.1 W/m2K for low energy houses to 0.73 W/m2K for Passivhaus installations without the need for high specification glazing. It also offers break-in protection up to resistance class 2 without reinforcement and class 3 with reinforcement, and sound insulation to class 5 without steel reinforcement. One of the key factors for Berkeley Homes was that the REHAU GENEO system has slim sightlines of just 115mm, replicating the look of aluminium and giving residents of the £440,000 - £750,000 apartments

almost uninterrupted views of the Thames. It also has inherent strength because it is extruded using the RAUFIPRO® fibre reinforced composite material which is similar to material used in aircraft construction and Formula 1 race cars. This means it could be used to fabricate windows and doors at Royal Arsenal Riverside with full height glazing up to 2.3m and full widths of up to 1.2m without the need for steel reinforcement. Specialist commercial fabricator Astraseal installed 660 windows and 124 doors on the project, as well as working on other elements which would not normally be contained within the window package in order to give the client a ‘one stop shop’ supplier solution. This included aluminium cloaking of reveals, soffits and the

underside of balconies. All of the window and doors were finished in smooth Anthracite Grey on the exterior and white on the interior to match the finish of the aluminium frames used on the earlier phases of the development.

New VEKA Imagine door lifts expectations Debuted at the FIT Show 2017, VEKA Group’s brand new Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is the latest addition to its luxurious, innovative and technically advanced Imagine suite of doors. Designed to ‘let nature into your living space’, the system can incorporate between two and four sashes; any and all of which can be configured to ‘lift and slide’ depending on the user’s requirements. And, thanks to its safe and secure construction – utilising extra large steel reinforcements within the profile – the Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is strong enough to easily handle both residential and commercial applications. Dawn Stockell, VEKA Group’s Marketing Director comments: “The Imagine Suite remains one of the industry’s most significant developments in terms of doors, with each new addition embracing its ethos of quality, capability and style. The Lift & Slide Patio Door is

no exception, offering luxurious expanses of glass while providing ‘best in class’ levels of insulation depending on the glazing used. We’ve pushed the boundaries of what’s possible, facilitating creative door designs that could only have been imagined before.” That’s not to say that the Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is intended only for wider openings. Its easy-to-operate sliding sashes are as effortless to use in small doorways as they are across large frontages opening onto lawns, patios or terraces for example. “We wanted the Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door to be elegantly stylish from any angle; inside or out”, Dawn continues. “Visible surfaces have been kept to a minimum even in floor-to-

ceiling installations; maximising the natural light let in, and creating a sumptuous sense of space. Sliding sashes close flush to the frame, and drainage has been fully concealed within the sash.” The Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is available in a range of finishes (19 colours and woodgrains from VEKA’s Variations colour collection) across all installation options. Aluminium covers can be specified in those finishes too, further increasing the system’s versatility as part of a broader design scheme. The same flexibility applies to hardware, with products from all major manufacturers catered for. “The Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door met with a fantastic reception at its FIT

Show launch”, Dawn adds. “What our technicians have achieved with its multi-chamber profile, Neopor inserts and thermally broken threshold has addressed the industry’s expectations for energy efficiency using doors of this type. We look forward to hearing from our installers about the new projects it opens up, and customer reactions to its solidity and understated good looks.” To find out more about the Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door, visit www.vekauk.com, call 01282 716 611 or email salesenquiry@veka.com. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-555 ENQUIRY-Card 555

Reynaers sliding doors give more than meets the eye

Size options for ISO-Chemie’s ISO-TOP Winframer

The key performance features of the CP 130 sliding door from leading aluminium systems company Reynaers extend far beyond its stunning exterior. At first glance, one brand of sliding door may appear similar to the next, but looks can be deceiving. Up close, the superior quality of Reynaers’ systems is evident, with an industry-leading maximum glass size of 2.7m in height. The slimline aluminium frames can also support glass up to 43mm in thickness and 300kg in weight. These huge panes of glass command panoramic, uninterrupted views that welcome natural light into the home. By choosing a special corner solution, it is possible to open up the space without any fixed corner element for a complete removal of barriers between internal and external spaces. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-124 ENQUIRY-Card 124

ISO CHEMIE’s ISO-TOP WINFRAMER thermal insulating and load bearing bracket system of the rapid and effective installation of windows, is now available in varying sizes from 80mm to 200mm to suit window depths. Having attained Passivhaus certified status, ISO-TOP WINFRAMER is a structurally solid, pre-fabricated installation frame manufactured in 1,200 mm lengths, which can be quickly cut to length on site and secured in position using a single component adhesive and, if necessary, fixing screws. This enables installers to position and fit windows into the insulation area between the inner and outer walls quickly and easily, avoiding the need to use metal brackets that cause nonrepeating thermal bridging and give extensive problems when the windows need replacing.

From traditional to contemporary, Howard Timber has it covered Howarth Timber and Building Supplies has one of the UK’s widest ranges of internal doors, from traditional panel doors to contemporary designs thanks to its links with leading UK manufacturers and high-quality imported products. Far from being a simple internal barrier, doors can set the character of the room, which is why Howarth Timber offers so many choices, including traditional cottage doors to sliding doors for those who need to save space. Howarth Timber also offers a selection of glazed internal doors, and even expansive bi-folding doors. For those wishing to create a distinctive appearance or prolong the lifespan of the door, Howarth Timber supplies a wide range of paints, stain and preservatives. Howarth Timber can supply associated products such as hardwood skirting, architraves, door linings and casings.

Interior design like all fashion evolves with the times and so the march of contemporary movement can often seem relentless. Of course a sense of tradition and warmth for the past often shapes our thinking with modern decor and so it is hardly surprising that Vicaima has seen a trend for panelled doors making a noticeable return over the past year. In response to this latest vogue, Vicaima have reinvigorated their Classic K range to provide a modern twist to an old favourite with some exciting new finishes. The Vicaima Classic K Range takes elements of shaker styling but with a more up-to-date and appealing look for the modern generation of interior panelled doors. Available in 1, 2, 3 and 4 panel designs, together with glazed options, Classic K doors offer a solid construction with real veneer faces, together with white or primed for onsite painting if required.

‘Belgium doors’ from SWA members soar in popularity Steel windows have remained an enduring element in both domestic and commercial buildings for centuries due to their slim sight-lines combined with rugged performance; yet they, like many building products, are subject to trends in styles and application. Most recently, members of the Steel Window Association have reported a resurgence in the popularity of steel framed entrance screens and partitions; normally featuring a pair of double doors flanked by fixed lights, and referred to as Belgium Doors. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-129 ENQUIRY-Card 129

New generation energy efficient steel windows from West Leigh Ideal for new build and renovation projects, where energy efficiency and aesthetics are key, the new W50 TB steel window offers narrow sight lines and a U-value as low as 1.4 W/m2K, depending on the glazing unit employed. The use of the system has been pioneered in the UK by West Leigh, working closely with Swiss designer and supplier, Ottostumm. DEVILLISH DETAIL FROM KAYFLOW Most professionals working in the design and creative industries, be it fashion, automotive or construction, recognise the importance of detail. The widely-quoted idiom, “The devil is in the detail” means that attention paid to small things can have big rewards and that details are important. In construction, choosing the right product or material for a specific task can mean the difference between a design solution that is right and one that is very much wrong. Rainwater systems specialists, Kayflow support this crusade for excellence in

detail and offers a range of guttering and downpipes for housing commercial and industrial applications, all designed to complement the nuances of contemporary and traditional architecture. For contemporary, the slick minimalist

lines of round, ogee, square and deep section gutter profiles work beautifully on houses designed for modern lifestyles in new build as well as refurbishment projects. Where more traditional detail is required, Kayflow has a range of PVC

rainwater goods in designs that faithfully reflect the old-world charm of cast iron guttering and pipework, popular since pre-Victorian times. Kayflow cast iron style rainwater goods are authentic reproductions of original designs, accurately made in all the traditional profiles, sections and sizes and with a surface texture that makes them highly appealing and cost effective alternatives to the hugely more expensive, real thing! Kayflow’s “cast iron” range was developed as a result of extensive trade and consumer research. Attention to detailing of bracketry and fixings and high quality surface finish were front on mind in the development of the range. Strength, durability and authentic appearance of all components, right down to small caps designed to cover wall fixings, make the system the ideal choice where traditional architectural styles need to be followed. The spray applied coating applied to all components is permanently bonded during manufacture, ensuring each retains the excellent ductile qualities associated with all Kayflow rainwater goods. Kayflow’s range of cast iron reproduction rainwater goods is available in black semi-gloss finish, in ogee, half round and deep-flow gutter profiles, together with square and round section down pipes and associated fittings. All components come with a comprehensive 10 year guarantee. BRETT MARTIN ADOPTABLE CHAMBER ASSEMBLIES MEET REVISED STANDARDS Brett Martin Plumbing and Drainage is now offering a new range of high-performance Adoptable Access and Inspection Chamber Assemblies which are designed to meet the requirements of Sewers for Adoption (SfA7) whilst offering specifiers and water authorities a robust, cost-effective and superior drainage solution. Following the revised performance criteria and installation standards for all adoptable drainage networks, Brett Martin’s new range of Adoptable Access and Inspection Chamber Assemblies, carrying the BSI Kitemark KM 635998, are tested to EN13598-1 and satisfy both the requirements of Sewers for Adoption 7 and Building Regulations Part H1. With enhanced sealing capacity using captive seals to prevent dislodgement and five inlets offering builtin falls to prevent blockages, Brett Martin’s Adoptable Access and Inspection Chamber Assemblies are available in 315mm and 450mm diameters. Both offer superior structural strength, enhanced loading capability for long-term serviceability and improved heavy-duty risers. “This combination of strength, loading capabilities and exceptional sealing means that our high performance chamber assemblies offer a wide range of benefits to the installer and meet all of the latest regulatory requirements,” said Chris Dawson, Brett Martin Sales Director.

Designed with the installer in mind, the lightweight chamber assemblies offer ease of installation due to watertight push-fit assemblies and a solid, stable connection using the additional connection points in the form of lugs featured on both base and riser. A stronger base allows for over 16 connection possibilities, reducing merchant stock-holding requirements for multiple base variants. The 315mm Shallow Access Chamber Assembly complies with Building Regulations Part H1 to a depth of 600mm and SfA7 to a depth of 900mm. Pedestrian covers for foot traffic areas or driveway covers to withstand heavier loads are available, while a height and tilt adjustable frame can accommodate a surface incline of up to 15°. For deeper applications, the 450mm Inspection Chamber Assembly complies with Building Regulations Part H1 to a depth of 3.0m and SfA7 to a depth of 1.2m. 46 Drainage, External Works & Landscapes

Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of sustainable drainage, sewer, water management and cable protection products for civil engineering projects, has supplied a complete infrastructure solution to a high-profile development, at RollsRoyce Watnall Road site, in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. The area is being developed over the next seven years with a new road network central to the plan, which is being renovated for multiple purposes. The finished scheme will include a school, commercial buildings with warehouses and up to 900 new homes in a project backed by Rolls-Royce and scheme developer Muse. Polypipe worked with main contractor Galliford Try to supply the main drainage and sewer infrastructure across the 150 acres of land. In addition, Polypipe has also supplied Ridgiduct cable protection to enhance the security and safety of the electricity and utilities networks. The holistic approach that Polypipe brought to every aspect of the project ensured that the main contractor switched to using plastic systems ahead of originally specified traditional

Polypipe gives landmark Rolls-Royce development forward momentum materials, for speed of installation and ease of use. To provide the land assigned for homes with necessary infrastructure, Polypipe supplied Polysewer and Ridgisewer structured wall sewer pipes and fittings, and surface water drainage system Ridgidrain to assist with excess surface water discharge. Ridigullies and Connection Saddles were also used to help connect the drainage systems together. For the sewer system ,340m of 150mm Polysewer and 250m of 450-600mm Ridgisewer were installed for both surface water and foul sewers for

adoption by the local water company under Section 104 and section 106 agreement. Over 80 Ridgigullies were installed to capture surface water, which are connected to Ridgidrain pipes to direct surface water to local natural watercourses. To complete the systems, Connection Saddles were also used to connect smaller Polysewer pipes to Ridgisewer, and Ridgidrain to Ridgistorm-XL. The project design was underpinned by extensive use of Ridgistorm-XL large diameter pipe, with stiffness classification intelligently engineered by Polypipe technical team to meet the

differing ground conditions across the site. As part of the site’s impressive surface drainage water infrastructure, Polypipe was able to produce over 800m of Ridgistorm-XL, in diameters ranging from 750-1050mm. Each section of pipe was engineered to a specific length that met the exact requirements of the project. The final system allows for high volumes of water to be discharged into local watercourses. In addition to the drainage infrastructure, over 20km of Ridgiduct has been supplied and installed to help protect the power lines, street lights and clean water systems. The advantage of this approach is that housing and building developers which work on the Watnall Road site will be able to connect the new homes and commercial units to these pre-installed networks. Jamie Missenden, Project Manager at Galliford Try comments: “Polypipe’s products have been used many times by Galliford Try as we have a really strong relationship. We made the decision to switch the specified system from a clay and concrete system to a plastic based solution. At the Watnall Road site, the specified systems have been easy to install and the technical support from Polypipe throughout has ensured a smooth process.” Rosie Cheetham, Marketing Consultant at Polypipe Civils comments: “The strength of Polypipe is that we can supply systems that can meet the needs of any project, and that adapt to the situation faced by contractors and engineers. At Watnall Road our technical team has worked to provide products to create a complex infrastructure network that will allow further building to take place. “The fact that all products can be supplied by one company is also an advantage for contractors such as Galliford Try who are working to tight project deadlines.” Polypipe Civils role in the project is due to be completed in Summer 2017. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-570 ENQUIRY-Card 570

FUTURE-PROOFED BATHROOMS Smart bathroom flooring choices can help people stay independent in their own homes for longer, explains Esther Bond, Specifications Consultant at Altro.

Home adaptations allow individuals who are disabled, ageing or vulnerable to continue to live in their own homes for longer. This does require, however, homes to be adapted to provide a safe and comfortable environment for them to live in. When houses are adapted, you need to not only consider the needs of the individual now, but in the future. Physical and mental health can deteriorate over time, and to have a familiar environment that does not have to be changed reduces stress and confusion after the house modification. The bathing experience is an important part of life and environments should help people feel safe and relaxed. Colour is a way of achieving this, creating a warm, comforting and homely

environment, even where the home is adapted with specialist equipment. We can recommend colour combinations that are appropriate for people with dementia and those with visual impairments. More accidents happen at home than anywhere else. That’s why safety should always be an important consideration when adapting a home. Slips and trips can easily happen when floors are wet or there is an uneven surface. Wet environments are not just about water; it’s also what we use in those areas, including shower gel and shampoo. The slip risks that these contaminants create are potentially dangerous and could cause serious accidents. Slips and falls aren’t the only consideration in wet environments. Indoor humidity and poor cleaning can lead to build-ups of bacteria and mould, which can impact health as well as the appearance of the rooms. For bathrooms, look for safety flooring that guarantees to reduce the chance of a slip or trip to one in a million, for the lifetime of the flooring so you can rest assured your home adaption will be safe for years to come. In practical terms, adaptions that are easy to clean and maintain is an

important consideration. Quite often carers are in the workforce or are themselves elderly. Having an environment that is easy to keep clean makes life easier – and safer - for everyone. Surfaces that are impervious and can be washed and even steam cleaned allows the highest levels of hygiene to be maintained.

Look for bathroom solutions such as a watertight and integrated floor and wall system that is easy to clean and is safe with a number of contaminants such as shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Also look for the latest specialist safety

flooring, designed to keep you safe in wetrooms, bathrooms, toilets, whether you are barefoot or wearing shoes, so you are safe no matter what you’re wearing (or not!). There are many reasons to choose safety flooring over tiles in domestic bathroom adaptations. Tiles and grouting are porous, making them more susceptible to harbouring bacteria. Tiles chip and crack more easily, allowing dirt and bacteria to collect and hide from cleaners. They can also allow water to reach the substrate, causing damage to walls. Grout lines are particularly vulnerable and even epoxy grout is susceptible. Unlike tiles, safety floors have no grout, giving bacteria nowhere to hide. In people’s homes more than anywhere, a comfortable, welcoming and attractive look matters. There are plenty of safety flooring options with contemporary shades that suit any domestic environment, including latest innovations with a soft-look finish that is more homely than traditional safety flooring. Specifying checklist Floors • Drainage/existing substrate • Type of equipment that will be used in the room • Extra impact resistance for walking aids and wheeled mobility aids • Cleaning • Stairs or ramps • Ground floor or upper floor location • Shoe and barefoot usage • Spillages of food, bodily fluids or chemicals • Potential for staining of floor • Contrasting colours on walls and floors, which can help those suffering from dementia or visual impairments • Design and appearance • Time available for installation Walls • Existing substrate/wall finish • Extra impact resistance for walking aids and wheeled mobility aids • Pipes, vents, ducts, wall furniture, window and door frames • Colour/contrast finish requirement • Hygiene requirement • Cleaning • Time available for installation • Coved skirting for hygiene and easy cleaning www.mclink.co.uk/1023-574 ENQUIRY-Card 574

Saniflo keeps pace with climate change

As Britain basks in the hottest June in 40 years, the heat is on to keep the nation cool. The sale of air conditioning units in the UK has been growing steadily the past few years, particularly in the commercial sector, and now more house builders include air conditioning as standard and a growing number of private households are turning to air conditioning to stay cool. With temperatures set to continue to rise as scientists predict extreme temperatures as a result of climate change, Saniflo – the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of macerators, pumps and shower cubicles – is predicting a continued upturn in the air conditioning market for commercial and domestic markets, and advises people to ensure efficient condensate removal. Gravity drain units can be problematic because they must be installed on the nearest outside wall, they require space and they can cause potential water damage to a building’s façade resulting in expensive repairs. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-139 ENQUIRY-Card 139

Keeping warm with Gaia’s underfloor heating Gaia Climate Solutions provides two main types of underfloor heating systems; a water-based system (often referred to as hydronic or wet) and an electric system. Water-based systems essentially use warm water from the central heating system and pump it through pipe circuits underneath the floor. This type of heating uses water at a lower temperature than standard radiators which helps to reduce heating costs. Electric systems feature a cable which is evenly spread across the floor and is concealed within the floor structure. This is then linked to a thermostat and mains power supply.

With underfloor heating, heat rises steadily and ensures an even heat flow across the whole room with no overheating which ensures running costs are kept to a minimum. www.mclink.co.uk/1023-143 ENQUIRY-Card 143

decentralised CONTINUOUS FLOW HOT water heating systems - an alternative to central plant Centralised plant rooms for heating and hot water systems are a traditional solution and have been so for many years. But we live in different times where economic and energy efficiency – and legislative compliance – are demanded by users, premises owners and managers in both public and private sectors. An alternative solution that marries high efficiency and wide ranges of modulation with simplicity of installation and design is the gas fired continuous flow hot water heating unit. These can be manifolded into a hot water system capable of coping with virtually any size of site or application. This system is a process of delivering a continuous flow of hot water at a constant temperature, without the need for storage. Continuous flow will only ever utilise energy whenever heat is needed i.e., the turning on of a tap in a washroom or a kitchen. When the units are in operation and heating water - gas is used - when the user is finished, so is the energy usage. With continuous flow systems, the user can set the required temperature of hot water to suit the needs and demands of the site. So, vulnerable users, such as children, the elderly or less able, can be safeguarded from the risk of scalding. Also, where the site has a secondary recirculating system the temperatures can be set at a level to further minimise the possibility of the proliferation of Legionella bacteria. Condensing continuous flow hot water solutions qualify for additional energy

efficiency points, boosting building energy performance as they far exceed energy efficiencies called for in Part L Building Regulations (Conservation of fuel and power). The systems are also ‘A’ rated under ErP. Current thinking on the design of systems is moving towards separating the hot water production from the heating system completely as it can give better efficiencies all round. Buildings need hot water all year round. However, better insulation in most buildings, and a greater awareness of energy efficiency, means there is a reduced need for heating input. In large commercial buildings, centralised heating and hot water systems have traditionally adopted the thermal storage design. These systems are frequently over-sized at the design stage in relation to actual usage on the not too scientific basis of ‘just in case’. This ‘hedging of bets’ approach to system design often leads to excessive safety margins, which in turn adds to the expense of purchase, installation and running costs. A storage type, conventional system of hot water that must be heated 24/7, 365 days a year to ensure hot water is

always available is an anachronism in today’s energy and cost-conscious world. Even if no hot water is drawn off, a standard cylinder, just for example, can lose a maximum of 3Kw of heat a day as a standing loss. All cylinders suffer from this to some extent and it equates, over a year, to 1095Kw of energy wasted. If you also look at the gas saving alone it equates to 101.8m of gas used. Decentralised hot water provision was recently installed at a luxury country club and spa in the leafy and very affluent Cheshire countryside. The site operators, having both the contractor and the consultant make calculations on usage and life cycle costings, was adamant that a stored hot water system was not in the frame for the new fit out as it would be “inefficient and expensive”. The company went on to specify 19 gas fired condensing continuous flow units over the whole site to fulfil its huge demand for 20,000 litres per hour of safe, temperature controlled hot water. The heavy-duty units feed executive soaker showers, poolside showers and all changing room ablutions.

Within this complex, the water heaters feed the showers directly so there is no need for re-circulation around the building. With no centralised boiler room having to be incorporated into the plans. Elsewhere, one local authority in North Wales is currently in the process of replacing its stored hot water systems with manifolded continuous flow systems. The council is set to make considerable savings on running costs. When the water isn’t running the continuous flow, system is not using fuel, which is ideal for the schools’ shut down during the holidays, for example. These claims and assertions have been borne out by independent scrutiny. Recent independent testing - by AECOM - of continuous flow hot water systems showed a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs, as well as life cycle costs over 20 years, when compared with indirect stored and stored hot water systems. The AECOM findings, after extensive deliberation, found that the brand’s continuous flow water heaters are 7.5% more economical than ‘traditional’ stored hot water systems. Decentralised water heating saves energy and money, but it also offers flexibility. If, for example, a hot water store cylinder should burst or break down, the whole system is shut down no more hot water until the problem is fixed. With a manifolded system one unit may be at fault but this doesn’t stop the whole system shutting down. The problem of potential legionella proliferation is also better maintained in the design of a manifolded continuous flow system. In a continuous flow unit, water temperature for distribution is accurate to ±1˚C. The fact that there is no stratification as there is no storage ensures permanent even temperature and because of this there is no requirement to heat a volume of water just to ensure the elimination of legionella. Another plus is, if demand grows, additional plant can easily be added in a modular fashion at a later stage if required. In addition, smart controls can be added to commercial condensing continuous flow systems to boost and govern the performance of the hot water system. RINNAI – ANOTHER ‘STANDARD SET’ - OUT OF HOURS TECH SUPPORT DURING THE WHOLE OF THE WORKING DAY Rinnai, the UK leader in continuous flow hot water delivery systems and units, has introduced a new service which gives contractors access via telephone or internet to unlimited Technical Support and Management The service is available, free of charge, with immediate effect to all installers, premises owners and facilities managers which have Rinnai units or systems on site. “We are offering customers a minimum of 12 hours per each working day – from 7.00am until 7.00pm - of dedicated Technical advice, support and information,” says Rinnai head of operations Chris Goggin. “Our units and systems are low maintenance and high performance with the lowest or minimal mal-function rates. But we see our role as ensuring that customers contractors, consultants, end-users - have that extra peace of mind in terms of Technical Information & Support out of ordinary working hours. Each site is unique in its requirements and installation configuration so we are here ready to help, by telephone or by internet,” he adds. Rinnai’s range of continuous flow gas fired water heaters includes heavy duty and condensing units which are all engineered and ErP rated to produce the highest efficiencies and lowest running costs of any hot water heating unit. For example, the Infinity HDC1600i, Rinnai’s premium condensing water heater has been tested to below 20 ppm NOx, producing the lowest emissions on the market, with 97% gross efficiencies. There is also an established range of award winning condensing heavy duty condensing internal and external water heaters which give an energy performance of 107% net efficiency while the larger HDC1500 internal and external models have 105% net efficiency. Rinnai Infinity condensing units also exceed all the demands of Part L Building Regulations.

Rinnai units can be used as a gas booster to solar thermal or heat pump installations maximizing renewable heat gains. It is the only booster that ensures a hot shower or bath any time of the day or night. The rest of the time the gas fired unit is inactive minimizing energy usage. For commercial buildings, Rinnai’s development and investment in integral smart controls for its appliances enable smart integration with sophisticated BMS systems allowing multi data monitoring which in turn identifies areas where energy, service and breakdown efficiencies can be improved. Rinnai also fields a common header flue system to streamline manifolded installations of its award-winning Infinity condensing units. And another simple but effective idea which safeguards against lime scale build up occurring in Rinnai continuous flow water heaters is a scale control system that continually monitors the appliances for lime scale deposits around the heat exchanger. Rinnai also offer the Infinity Solo water heater, the first Rinnai product for the UK which combines the advanced technology of its wall mounted water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one. And it boasts very low heat loss figures. www.rinnaiuk.com www.mclink.co.uk/1023-585. ENQUIRY-Card 585

Aggregate Industries lightens the load for 20 Old Bailey redevelopment Aggregate Industries has been awarded a prestigious new contract to provide its revolutionary Lytag product in the £60 million modernisation of the 20 Old Bailey redevelopment in London. Located close to St. Paul’s Cathedral, the 1980s era building at 20 Old Bailey, designed by BuckleyGrayYeoman, is due to be completed in spring 2017.The redevelopment, awarded to ISG, incorporates a complete modernisation programme, involving extensive structural alterations, internal remodeling, and the addition of two further floors at roof level. Core to the building’s restructure is a large atrium which runs approximately 100 metres at about 6 metres wide. Here, the challenge for Specialist Screed Flooring Solutions was to retain a light, versatile quick dry floor screed onto which mobile access plant could be used. Cue Aggregate Industries and its revolutionary Lytag lightweight secondary aggregate. Specifically

designed and manufactured to meet the complex requirements of modern construction practice, Lytag produces one of the fastest drying, lightweight offerings to the market. By using Lytag, ISG will be able to reduce the dead load of the construction by approximately 40 per cent over conventional screed, whilst maintaining its structural integrity. Another benefit of this approach is improved sustainability. Lytag, being a

secondary aggregate, also reduces the demand for natural quarried material. With an ever increasing emphasis being put on sustainable construction, the use of secondary aggregate will help the building gain additional valuable points towards achieving BREEAM ratings. Barry Mellor, Commercial Manager at Lytag, said: “The beauty of lightweight solutions is that it can offer exactly the same level of structural performance as normal weight aggregate however it is

significantly lighter, thus reducing the dead load of a building. For 20 Old Bailey this has not only enabled greater design freedom but reduced the overall construction programme therefore reducing associated construction costs.” For more information on Lytag call 01904 727922 or visit www.lytag.com

Best Show Garden at the 2017 Chelsea Flower Show was awarded to the M&G Garden, for which Helifix supplied some unseen, but critical, components. The garden featured monumental blocks of limestone of varying sizes and the two largest stone clad steel towers, at 8m and 5m high, required temporary foundation support. The Royal Horticultural Society does not allow any permanent excavations to be carried out and tree roots had to be avoided while whatever means of support was used had to be removed once the show was over. The ideal solution, overcoming all these potential problems, was provided by Helifix Dixie micro-piles, a technically innovative proprietary system certified by the International Code Council (ICC).

When you buy a commodity product like cement or aggregate, the name on the packaging seldom matters. But that’s not the case with OSB, it seems. Recent research carried out on behalf of Norbord has found that a whopping 80% of both builders and builders’ merchants react positively to the SterlingOSB brand name. SterlingOSB is the UK’s leading brand of oriented strand board and the name and logo can be seen on building sites the length and breadth of the UK. With a reputation for quality, durability and availability, the name SterlingOSB carries weight with both buyers and stockists. The term “Sterling board” has even become a generic term for all OSB – a fact that, while flattering, has potential negative impact when applied to inferior products.
