Georgian townhouse is remodelled to meet the highest energy performance standards An historic Listed Georgian townhouse in London’s Bloomsbury has been transformed into a comfortable, peaceful and energy efficient home that approaches Passivhaus EnerPHit standards. This was attained by using modern insulation techniques including a cutting-edge secondary glazing system from Selectaglaze that significantly improves the performance of the traditional, single glazed sash windows. Robert Prewett of Prewett Bizley architects needed to convince conservation officers that a Grade II Listed building could be fitted with energy saving measures whilst respecting all the historic features. The large single glazed sash windows were a particular challenge as they represented a significant proportion of the wall area and could not be replaced. With the high levels of insulation that were required along with

the need to keep the shutters working in some of the rooms, a bespoke solution was required. Robert approached Selectaglaze who was both developing a new sash window design and trialling Pilkington’s Spacia thin vacuum units which have a centre pane U-value of 1.0. The resulting Series 25 window proved perfect for the project as it offered high sealing efficiency, a very low U-value and a discreet frame with a specially developed slide catch that allowed shutters to fully close. The home now has air tightness close to 1 air change per hour at test pressure which demonstrates that the secondary glazing is performing very well. Established in 1966 and Royal Warrant Holder since 2004, Selectaglaze is the leading designer, manufacturer and installer of secondary glazing. Enquiry No.200

Kalwall creates healthy shelter

Around 8 million people a year are expected to be sheltering under Kalwall at the beautifully-designed new bus station at West Croydon. Designed by Transport for London Architects, this is an unusual example of how translucent Kalwall can offer many different advantages above its normal use for translucent traditional building cladding and rooflighting. The brief for this project was to create a user-friendly waiting and assembly shelter to service the thousands of passengers using this important and busy transport hub linking the 150 buses an hour with the adjacent tram stop and West Croydon railway station providing routes to Canada Water and

east London, and via the tram network to Beckenham and Wimbledon. The normal choice of construction for a translucent and weatherproof canopy would be to glaze the roof with glass, However in-house architect Martin Eriksson and the project team at TfL realised that Kalwall offered a better solution in this location which would not only solve the brief and contribute to a better design but would offer many other benefits over traditional glazing. For example, since Kalwall is much lighter than glass it meant that the supporting structure needed to be less strong and far less chunky. In additional, not only would the shelter be less high but the vertical supports would be less obstructive and open up a better view

Web: Email: Tel: 01727 837271 of the environment including the very attractive church nearby which had previously been blocked from the view of waiting passengers. Unlike conventional glazing, highly insulating Kalwall is far more attractive than glass while eliminating shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade; improving the experience for passengers below. Also, due to the way it diffuses natural daylight downwards and at night reduces vertical illumination and reflection upwards, it controls light pollution on the surrounding high rise buildings. Soil and detritus are less obvious on Kalwall than on glass and maintenance and cleaning is much simpler because access scaffolding is not required and maintenance staff can safely walk across its surface. One of the main attractions of specifying high performance Kalwall for conventional buildings is its unique effect on both the interior and exterior. Internally, rooms are flooded with diffused natural daylight which creates a stimulating and very attractive environment. Although translucent, it also offers the big advantage of privacy while the elevations appear crisp,

simple and inviting. When illuminated at night they emit a very attractive ethereal glow. Apart from being specified for all types of new build, Kalwall is increasingly used for the refurbishment of cladding or rooflights on aged buildings. Collaborative approach delivers UK’s most connected bridge A landmark crossing The landmark Queensferry Crossing in Scotland promises to be one of the most efficient, high performance bridges ever built. Designed to incorporate a complex array of utilities and communications equipment, a partnership between cable management specialist voestalpine Metsec plc, leading M&E fixings supplier in Scotland MEF and leading specialist M&E contractor SES Engineering Services Ltd (SES), has been critical in ensuring the delivery of the systems that will support the 2.7km road bridge and ensure its safe and efficient running for decades to come. A major logistical challenge The 250-tonne steel bridge sections arrive in Rosyth docks from China, where they are then prefabricated to incorporate all of the services and road surfaces. The cable management systems supplied by Metsec are prefabricated into 424 modules by SES and then installed into each of the 110 finished 750-tonne road section decks before they are taken out by barge onto the River Forth and then lifted by crane to connect to the span between the bridge towers. All of the cable management products used had to be pre-approved by the construction contractors, the Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors Consortium (FCBC) which consists of HOCHTIEF Solutions AG, American Bridge

International, Dragados S.A and Morrison Construction. Due to the extreme temperatures, thermal extension couplers for cable management were designed into the project with the support of the Metsec team to help compensate for the movement of the bridge due to temperature fluctuations, wind and traffic. A collaborative approach Gordon Cullen, Contracts Manager at SES explains: “While we have extensive experience in major infrastructure developments, the Queensferry Crossing is a once-in-a-lifetime project that demands a highly collaborative approach to ensure we can meet and match the exact requirements to deliver all of the component parts of the bridge on time and on budget. “MEF are a part of the SES approved supply chain and they selected Metsec not only because they were the best from a commercial and quality point of view, but because they were able to supply the cable management systems we needed in bespoke sizes, vitally important in terms of minimising waste and ensuring ease of fit. Particularly important was their willingness to adapt the units to minimise the number of joints required. Everything was spot-on in terms of enabling the teams to fabricate and install each unit on schedule.” Metsec supplied hot dip galvanised cable tray and cable ladders cut to special size lengths, the trays to 3.5m and the ladders to 6.9m. The finished modules assembled by SES will hold a complex array of water management and cabling needs, from lighting and power, traffic management systems, security, fire alarms, radio communications, structural health monitoring and building monitoring, all designed to give optimal control over the management and performance of the bridge.

Reliability and quality Alistair Fairweather at MEF adds: “This is a fantastic project to work on and much of our involvement has been down to the support we have had from Metsec. We have worked with them for six or seven years and we knew that their involvement would be vital to us winning this contract. The sizes needed were not standard, but their UK-based manufacturing capabilities gave us the option to offer a flexible, high quality solution to SES that we knew Metsec could fulfil to deliver on time and on budget. In fact, flexibility was critical not just in securing the project but in meeting evolving requirements as the project has progressed over the past 12 to 18 months. We have put a lot of faith in partnering with Metsec for what has been one of the biggest projects we have ever worked on and it has really paid off. The reliability and the quality of service from the Metsec team has been as important as the quality of the product. The 55 micron hot dipped galvanised steel tray and ladder systems used will need to endure exposure to the elements for up to two years before being completely sealed in under the bridge, and the high quality of the product will contribute to keeping the whole life costs of the project down.” Jon Hillier, Director at Metsec cable management division added: “The Queensferry Crossing project was something we were keen to be involved in from the start. We knew we had the capability to reprogramme our mill to allow us to manufacture the specified lengths of ladder and tray in a way that would fit perfectly into the required modules. Working with MEF meant that we were also able to offer the just-in-time capabilities needed to support the tight prefabrication scheduling for each deck for the bridge.”

Crown Trade Fastflow goes from strength to strength in the marketplace

Crown Paints is widening opportunities for specifiers to introduce its pioneering water-based Crown Trade Fastflow system to exterior and interior projects.

clients. They recognised the qualities of a product which feels like it’s oil-based with attributes of a water-based system and leaves great lasting colour too.

Following extensive research and development, the UK paint manufacturer is bringing a satin finish to its popular Crown Trade Fastflow range for 2017. Since its launch two years ago, Crown Trade Fastflow has built-up a following in the specification sector as the ideal choice where a low odour and quick drying product are required. As the newest recruit, Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Satin retains these key brand features. It also provides an excellent flow and a high quality, contemporary satin finish which is usually associated with solvent-based paints.

Debbie Orr, Crown Paints Marketing Manager, said: “We were really pleased with the reception Crown Trade Fastflow Gloss received at its launch. “We invested heavily in research and development to ensure it offered the trade the right paint for the job for both indoor and outdoor use – and would set the pace for the future in terms of style, speed, substance and sustainability. These same qualities remain at the fore with Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Satin. It represents a break-through in innovation and all the reassurance of our experience and heritage, which stretches back more than 200 years.”

The introduction of a satin finish to the premium range has been made following feedback from customers, who have requested a contemporary look, in-keeping with their customers’ requirements. The new arrival: Featuring advanced technology, Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Satin offers the characteristics of a traditional solvent based product - with the benefits of a water based formulation. As a result, the product delivers a highly professional, contemporary finish, fast drying performance and a low odour, as well as slower yellowing when compared to traditional alkyd systems. Suitable for use on suitably prepared interior and exterior joinery and metal work, Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Satin offers excellent flow, which minimises brushmarks and provides excellent opacity. Due to its fast-drying qualities, two coats can be applied in one day, therefore reducing time and labour costs – a crucial factor for public and private sector specification projects. Of major significance is the fact it has also been manufactured to Crown’s renowned Breatheasy® formulation, which means it is 99 per cent solvent free - a key attribute which today’s customers are increasingly requesting. It minimises disruption and there is no unpleasant odour.

A successful launch: Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Satin comes to the market following the launch in 2015 of Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss and Quick Dry Primer Undercoat, which was well-received among specification

Crown Trade Fastflow Satin and Gloss is one in a range of high performance products from the brand, designed to meet the needs of architects and specification professionals. These include the flame retardant coating Crown Trade Timonox. This system can help provide additional time for a building to be safely evacuated when applied on the walls and ceilings of corridors, stairwells and other communal areas that form part of a circulation area or fire escape route. The high-performance formulation works by limiting the oxygen around the flames through the release of noncombustible gases, and by using a formulation that provides a barrier to the flammable paint layers beneath. Also available in the Crown Trade range are Crown Trade Steracryl Anti Bacterial and Crown Trade Steracryl Mould Inhibiting systems. Both are available in matt and durable acrylic eggshell finishes, with the anti bacterial finish ideal for hygiene sensitive areas including kitchens, while the mould inhibiting paint can prevent mould growth in areas including bathrooms or void properties. \Another popular product is Crown Trade Clean Extreme. Its outstanding qualities make it an invaluable choice across public and private spaces. Available in scrubbable matt and acrylic durable eggshell formulations, this coating provides exceptional durability and longevity, which allows repetitive cleaning and the added benefit of excellent stain resistance. Its super scrubbable finish also extends maintenance cycles by returning to an ‘as new’ condition after cleaning – reducing the need for costly redecoration.

As Building Regulations continue to move us towards more airtight homes, Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems are increasingly being considered the ideal choice in new properties - and an increasingly popular one in refurbishments too. Lee Stones, category manager for Xpelair, looks at the factors which are driving a surge in the specification of heat recovery technology in the home.

Tel: 0844 372 7761 Email: Web:

MVHR: A NATURAL CHOICE It will come as no surprise to architects and house builders that specifying a good ventilation system has become as prevalent to property-owners as efficient home heating. With increasingly stringent Building Regulations, a drive towards energy efficiency and increased insulation options for existing properties, homes have become more ‘wrapped up’ than ever before. Whilst these measures are ideal for reducing monthly heating bills, the lack of adequate ventilation can increase the presence of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), mould and damp within the home, contributing to poor IAQ. Whole House Ventilation : Where the choice of ventilation is concerned, it’s no secret that whole house ventilation wins out in the efficiency stakes, and certainly for new build properties it’s a no brainer for housebuilders and architects to opt for whole house systems like Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR). MVHR is ideal for new builds where insulation levels are high. Available as a centralised, whole-house system or single room units, this proven technology extracts moist, stale air from inside the property and replaces it with fresh, incoming air. Crucially, it uses heat from the outgoing air to warm the incoming air and high efficiency systems can recover up to 90 per cent of the heat that would have been lost through normal extraction. Meeting regulations with ease : While following the Passive House model is voluntary, the design principles deriving

from the pilot project set unprecedented standards of energy efficiency in residential building design. The good news for architects and housebuilders is that compliance is easy. Current Part F regs single out MVHR units, such as Xpelair’s new Natural Air 180 – launching in April 2017 - as the most sophisticated ventilation systems available. Provided it is specified and installed properly, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery will ensure housebuilders can meet Building Regulations for new properties, whilst also improving SAP ratings. Energy credentials : One of the most obvious benefits of MVHR is its energy saving potential. Using waste heat from the outgoing, stale air to warm fresh, incoming air can reduce heating bills, of course, and for those organisations with a large stock, it can deliver significant carbon reductions. For the best results, MVHR systems such as the Natural Air 180 - can play a vital part in a whole-house approach to energy saving and carbon reduction, which includes an intelligent active humidistat that reacts in real-time to rapid increases in humidity – providing a boost, on demand. The flow rate in the Natural Air 180 is boosted only as needed, minimising energy costs and further reducing acoustic output. Boost your IAQ : It is also important to note that we spend more than 90 per cent of our time indoors and whilst there is a global understanding of

outdoor air pollution, few people realise that indoor air can be as much as 50 times more polluted than outdoor air. The importance of IAQ should not be underestimated. Mould or condensation in the home can aggravate pre-existing health conditions such as asthma and eczema, whilst high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from everyday household items such as polish or air fresheners can also lead to symptoms including fatigue, rhinitis, dizziness, headaches, coughing and sneezing. The key, of course, is to ensure adequate ventilation in the home, reducing the build-up of condensation, black mould and the spores which it releases. The solution? A constant volume MVHR system. Xpelair’s Natural Air 180 uses Intelligent Adaptiflow Sensing to deliver constant volume performance. The motor operates by constantly assessing the performance of the impeller and, when there is a consistent change in airflow - caused by back pressure - the motor adjusts the speed of the fan to maintain a constant volume of extracted air. What’s more, with the Internet of Things changing the face of the heating and ventilation industry, we can expect to see some exciting add-ons and integrations to MVHR systems in the coming months. By working closely with leading manufacturers such as Xpelair, architects can stay ahead of the game and take advantage of an exciting change for the industry. Enquiry No.207

a 350mm stroke length together with 7 SHEVTEC® control panels and manual control points (MCP), which were networked using the company’s OSLink network cards. An external weather station was also installed to provide an information feed on ambient conditions into the system. In normal operation, the windows open and close automatically, to provide cooling and a supply of fresh air, but in the event of a fire this is over-ridden and vents are opened to allow smoke to be vented, enabling escape routes to be kept smoke free.

A new prestige office development in Sandton, Johannesburg is using a combined smoke and natural ventilation system, involving automatic window vents in the building’s elliptical glazed central tower, which is actuated and controlled by an integrated solution from SE Controls Africa.

Russel Cramb, General Manager with SE Controls Africa, explained: “Capital Hill is an iconic building and has already attracted a lot of attention for its eyecatching design, green credentials and the quality of facilities it provides. We have an immense amount of experience in combined natural and smoke ventilation solutions, which we used when working with the architect to create a solution that wouldn’t compromise the smooth architectural lines of the external glazed facade.”

Omnie underfloor heating features in offices-to-flats conversion

The conversion of a former office property into half a dozen high specification apartments in the sought after Tooting district of South-West London has featured the specification of a low profile underfloor heating system from the range of OMNIE, as part of a space-saving building services strategy. Locksbury Services’ operatives installed the 35 mm deep FoilBOARD panels across the building’s existing sub-floors: the lightweight boards, manufactured from extruded polystyrene, which has a very high compressive strength perfect for floating floors, were easily cut to fit the bay windows and the rest of the rooms’ layouts. Then 400 metres

or more of the 16 mm diameter heating pipes were pressed into the unique OMNIE multi-directional channel designs, which simplified the onsite installation eliminating the need of assemble loop and straight panels, prior to being connected back to the OMNIE manifolds, which distribute the flow from the home’s boiler. While the slightly more complex Flat 3 required a six-port manifold, the rest of the dwellings feature five-port versions supplying primary water at 550 C to the different zones. Animation highlights renewable heating potential for commercial buildings

The short animation focuses on two renewable heat pump products in the market-leading Ecodan range, with the packaged, Monobloc CAHV air source system and the CRHV ground or water-source solution. Both will connect to radiators or underfloor heating systems and can work independently or in conjunction with other heating systems. The units are also modular, meaning they can be installed in phases to increase design flexibility and will work in rotation to match demand and prolong equipment life. The air source is available up to 688kW and the ground/water source will deliver 960kW, making them ideal for many commercial buildings, whether newbuild or refurbishments.

A new animation from Mitsubishi Electric is highlighting how commercial premises can benefit from reliable, renewable heating to help reduce energy bills whilst also qualifying for 20 years of Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments. “Over half the emissions from a typical commercial property are due to water and space heating and finding ways to reduce energy here can make a real difference to people bills and the nation’s carbon reduction targets,” explains Graham Temple,

“We’ve used a school in the animation, but the principles also apply to almost any commercial building owner who wants to reduce energy bills and receive RHI payments,” adds Temple.

ARJ Construction Ltd. was the main “Fit out” contractor, for the dozen dwelling development continuing its chosen path of the past two decades, delivering high-end residential developments. For the flats in Westminster, ARJ installed a range of different sized shower channels manufactured by Dallmer, a company which has, as its CEO Johannes Dallmer said, evolved “from a master craftsman business to an architectural brand.” Indeed, Dallmer has created a completely new category of drain fittings that combine superb design and functionality, the CeraLine W Duo shower channels being no exception. The shower rooms have been fitted out in marble and white masonry for the fashionable, ultra-modern appearance that is favoured for many contemporary interiors. Certainly, a conventional drain

outlet would not have complimented this look, nor probably coped with the high water volumes flowing from deluge heads. However, the sleek linear drainage channel incorporated within the CeraLine W Duo range, finished in

stainless steel, coordinates perfectly with the minimalist design. For the site at Seymour Place, ARJ was able to fit the ideal sized channel for each room, these spanning lengths of 700, 800, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500 and

Underfloor Heating Explained When it comes to underfloor heating, you need a reliable system that is guaranteed to last the lifetime of the tile or stone covering. The two main types of system that are available include an electric system and a water based (hydronic) system, Schlüter-Systems provide an effective, innovative solution for both of these.

The electric system, Schlüter®-DITRAHEAT-E: Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-E can be used in kitchens, wetrooms, bathrooms, ensuites and anywhere that tile and stone is to be installed. Due to the intelligent digital touchscreen thermostat you can easily control temperatures and heating times, creating warm tile and stone whenever and wherever you chose. Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-TB is the latest addition to the award-winning Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-E underfloor heating range. The integration of a thermal break fleece on the underside of the uncoupling membrane pushes 80% of the heat to the surface for up to 70% faster response time on concrete compared to other electric underfloor heating systems.

1600mm, all with a standard cover in stainless steel. Conforming to DIN EN 1253, the CeraLine W Duo linear drainage system is installed at the wall junction, with two drain bodies to choose from: outlet DN 50 horizontal and a ball-joint adjustable from 0 – 15 degrees. It features sound-insulated height adjustable leveling legs, an integral sand coated flange for secure bonding of under-tile waterproofing and removable trap insert, as well as a 50 mm water seal and tiling gauges plus a tile-trim jig. Any made-to-measure length up to 2000 mm can be supplied, while upstands can be on the back, back and one end or back and both ends - these can be set back for stone or marble wall finishes. heating assembly. This system can be used in new build and renovation projects, and it is a green choice with economical, energy saving properties. Its low supply temperature of approximately 30°C, compared to between 50-55°C in some systems, means Schlüter®-BEKOTEC-THERM is extremely effective both with conventional heat generation methods and regenerative energy sources, such as heat pumps or solar panels. Since the thinner screed requires much less material, the final construction is lighter and lower than traditional screed installations, saving considerable construction time.

Coral entrance flooring, protecting buildings one step at a time Forbo Flooring Systems’ Coral® entrance flooring collection has been improved and refreshed to provide higher performance and more modular choices for ease of installation. Enquiry No.218

Coral Brush, a great all rounder for absorbing moisture and removing dry soiling

Independent testing by Cleaning Research International has shown that by installing Forbo’s Coral collection, up to 95% of dirt and moisture can be removed from the soles of shoes in just six steps, which can reduce cleaning time by up to 65%. These savings in cleaning time mean that the product and fitting costs can be recouped within just six months of use. Due to popular demand for tile formats, Forbo’ Coral tile offer now includes all colourways in the Coral Classic and Brush ranges – providing all the dirt and moisture retaining properties of the sheet options but in a 50 x 50cm tile format, which helps to

reduce waste and allows for a quicker installation – saving time and money. It also means that the product can be stored and transported easily. Garry Bateman, Forbo’s Head of Technical Sales and Support, said: “A well-designed entrance flooring system should form an integral part of a building’s cleaning and maintenance strategy. It is often an afterthought when it comes to designing a flooring scheme for a building, when in reality, it should be one of the first decisions made. “Our Coral collection not only provides superior performance in terms of

reducing cleaning costs and removing dirt from the soles of shoes, but it can also have a positive impact on the health and well-being of a building’s occupants. In fact, a healthy entrance is now part of the Well Building Standard, and installing a permanent entrance flooring system like Coral will combat the introduction of potentially harmful substances to indoor spaces.” The collection consists of a variety of ranges to meet individual entrance needs: Coral Welcome, which has the style and aesthetic of a luxury carpet; Coral Brush, which is the great all rounder for absorbing moisture and removing dry soiling as the weather demands; Coral Classic, the ultimate moisture absorber; Coral Duo, which is ideal for areas that needs both maximum dirt removal and exceptional moisture absorption and Coral logo, where a bespoke print or cut out design can be placed on the system. Norbord best-selling flooring solutions designed for today’s busy builder For many years, the preferred material for decking suspended timber floors has been chipboard – and that shows no sign of changing. Norbord’s CaberBoard flooring range is the UK’s best-selling chipboard flooring product, its handy dimensions allowing ease of handling and its robust tongue-and-groove edging ensuring a secure and even surface. Today things are moving on. As the housing market continues to grow strongly, tradesmen are obliged to look for methods of completing projects faster and more efficiently. Consequently, more of them are looking beyond the standard CaberFloor P5 panel and choosing Norbord’s advanced CaberDek and CaberShieldPlus systems. Both CaberDek and CaberShieldPlus use the same P5 moisture-resistant particleboard but also feature further added benefits meaning the floor can be laid even before the roof is installed. Acoustic Panels aid history

Designed by Burd Haward Architects, the new welcome buildings are arranged around a central courtyard, raised above ground level to avoid risk of flooding and impact on the existing flood plain. Their form and materials, including extensive use of internal acoustic panels, make reference to agricultural structures typically found on the edge of a large estate. The prefabricated engineered timber structure is clearly expressed internally, with bold and reductive detailing which allows the buildings to be understood as contemporary interpretations of these familiar forms.

A significant new building project has recently been completed at

one of the National Trust’s most popular properties in Hampshire, Mottisfont Abbey. The new development, situated on the banks of the River Test, aims to improve the entrance facilities at this historic

priory and country estate - visited annually by over 250,000 people.

Externally the shop is clad in weathering steel, the WCs in timber boarding, while the entrance area is glazed with deep timber fins to allow views through to the river and gardens beyond. In this very busy reception, the deep reveal theme is continued across the ceiling, with Troldtekt acoustic tiles cut to fit vertically between the ceiling

joists. This helps to dissipate the sounds and echoes from visitors in an otherwise potentially noisy area. Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of the 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at silver level. The panels, used mainly on ceilings or walls, are specified to improve acoustics in many different projects, such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial and public buildings. Available in various sizes and in three grades from extrem fine to coarse, they can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour.

Reynaers helps to build memories with new Remembrance Centre

A £15.7 million Remembrance Centre has welcomed its first visitors following a nine-year fundraising campaign by the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The centre features aluminium window and door systems in a beautiful bronzed anodised finish from leading provider of aluminium glazing systems Reynaers. The build includes three exhibition galleries, a multi-screen cinema and hands-on interactive displays. The new centre, sympathetically designed by the prestigious Glenn Howells Architects, uses

Reynaers’ CW 60 modular curtain walling, Vision 50 door system, ES 50 Eco System door, CS 68-HV Hidden Vent window and CS 77 doors. It was built by contractors Stepnell and the consultant was Wintech Ltd. With a large restaurant and shop, separate coffee shop and beautiful cloistered courtyard with garden, it’s hoped that the new centre will attract hundreds of thousands of new visitors to the Arboretum. Michael Kendrick, Project Architect at Glenn Howells Architects, said: “We were appointed in 2009 and the architectural brief was to provide larger and higher

quality facilities that included flexible and efficient spaces for interpretation, education, catering and retail. “The aim of the new contemporary Remembrance Centre was to transform the NMA’s visitor offer by providing a warm and inviting space for reflection, memorial and celebration of life, to be enjoyed by people from all walks of life and by all generations. The large glazed openings play an important part in creating an appropriate mood for the spaces throughout the development, and a bronze anodised finish was chosen to tone in with the warmth of the timber frame and cladding. I’ve worked with Reynaers for years and they provided a really good specification service and we were really happy with the products that were installed.” Reynaerss Marketing Manager Rebecca Cope said: “This iconic building will give people the opportunity to record and upload their own stories to a new national archive through a unique Memory Booth, as well as enjoying a sensory play garden, full of textures, scented foliage, and natural materials. “It’s a beautiful place in a unique setting and we are really proud to have this in our extensive portfolio of energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing buildings that use our aluminium systems.” Web: Enquiry No.227

’Passivhaus Approvals for Aluprof’ The Passivhaus standard originated from a conversation in May 1988 between a Swede Bo Adamson and Wolfgang Feist of Germany. The idea was to develop a voluntary standard for energy efficiency in buildings, significantly reducing their ecological footprint. Today, the numbers of Passivhaus properties are in the tens of thousands across Europe in both residential and commercial properties, in both new and refurbishment projects. As more homes in the UK are built to this very low energy standard there is a need to adopt window and door systems that offer the highest thermal efficiency. The MB104 Passive Aero has excellent thermal insulation performance for an openable window system with a Uw as low as 0.53 W//m2K and for a door a UD as low as 0.62 W//m2K. With glazing widths up to a class leading 81mm in thickness, the doors can also be assembled into panel doors as well as fully glazed. The Aluprof MB-104 system is increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Case Study: Lewes Station We are delighted to have worked alongside BAM Nuttall Ltd on the recent refurbishment of Lewes station roof in East Sussex, providing them with our lightweight, quick to fit Georgian wired polycarbonate Multi-Link non-fragile rooflights. I visited Lewes Station on a fairly cold April day for our initial site visit to review the roof. Looking around I could see that it had some unique characteristics, from the ornate pillars and feature brick building housing the café, to the many flower beds. All these showed that the station was well cared for and much loved. It had a real feeling of history about it. Vicky Evans, Director

The remit for Lewes was to replace the 1,178 panels of roof and vertical glazing. The product that we put forward was our Georgian wired polycarbonate Multi-Link non-fragile rooflights. For me it’s important to retain the feel of a station, so a sympathetic restoration is crucial. However, I now also think it’s essential to not just replace like with like, as although traditional materials may look the same there are often disadvantages associated with them. I think Georgian wired glass is an example of this. It suits these old stations, it is in keeping, but it just replicates the same old problems; it breaks, it needs replacing. The cycle continues. Durability and sustainability are key in any refurbishment, why replace with something susceptible to breakage? So this was an easy one to solve, the product needed was our Georgian wired effect polycarbonate. This polycarbonate glazing mimics the traditional Georgian wired glass that it will be replacing, but it will not break in use. It is therefore safer to install and to use as an overhead glazing material, with no risk of glass cracking and shards

or glass dust falling onto the platform below. The long term cost saving of not needing to replace broken panels, accompanied by the massive safety advantages of not worrying about falling glass, just have to be considered as key benefits of our Georgian wired polycarbonate roof glazing. Georgian wired polycarbonate also has the additional benefit of being lighter than glass, therefore making it easier and quicker to install on a roof. When it replaces glass it does not usually require any extra structure being put in place as it is normally considerably lighter than the original glazing. Our Georgian wired polycarbonate is pre-glazed in our Multi-Link framing system which has a number of advantages over the old style two-part glazing bars that are put together on site to create a glazed roof. The MultiLink system is made in our factory and incorporates an innovative fix and link installation feature that makes it very quick to install. So once on site there is less disruption at a station, which is important as the public needs to be serviced as normally as possible during building works. This panel system also results in fewer errors on the install as we do the work to get it right before it hits the site. Our Multi-Link framing system has also recently been redesigned to be narrower (50mm) in order for it to align with older style glazing bars, keeping and recognizing the importance of the traditional look whilst providing the

advantages of a more modern style system. In fact, we designed this 50mm panel bar on our 3D printer. It’s good to see how such a traditional station has been enhanced by cutting edge technology! The Multi-Link roof glazing is also nonfragile to ACR(M)001:2014, which is a key feature of all our roof glazing systems. When the life of old glazing on a roof is over it needs to be replaced with non-fragile roof glazing to limit risks on the roof. All these advantages led to a successful roof re-glazing, providing Lewes station with a non-fragile, virtually unbreakable and attractive roof that keeps the feel and look of this heritage station. Any hurdles that were met were overcome by our Twinfix team working closely with BAM, with one joint goal in mind, completing the project successfully. Now finished, I think it’s a wonderful example of our Georgian wired MultiLink product and I think that Twinfix, BAM Nuttall and Lewes station can be very proud of the refurbished premises. We all need to continually challenge ourselves, our thinking and our products for ways to use modern products effectively and I think Lewes station is a great example of how a contemporary material has fulfilled the heritage needs of a listed building. Social Housing Tenants Warm To Kemper System Roofing Solution Kemper System’s Stratex warm roof system has been used to upgrade the roofs of five social housing apartment blocks as part of an investment programme supporting a £20 million stock transfer from Gloucester City Council to housing association Gloucester City Homes. Combining Kemper System’s Kempertherm PIR insulation board and the company’s Kemperol V210 coldapplied liquid waterproofing membrane, the warm roof upgrades form part of a £29 million 30-year plan, which also includes construction of 100 new social housing dwellings by 2020; the first to be constructed in the city since 1991.

adhered to the roof, using the system’s tongue and groove structure to interlock each piece of board and provide a uniform finish. The Kemperol V210 cold-applied liquid waterproofing membrane was then applied in a single wet-on-wet process involving the application of liquid resin to the substrate followed by installation of the reinforcement fleece onto the wet resin. More resin was then immediately applied to ensure complete saturation of the fleece before the system was allowed to cure to form a durable, monolithic waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate and remains permanently elastic and U/V stable. Comments Stuart Hicks from Kemper System: “The upgrades to the five blocks form an important milestone in Gloucester City Homes initiative to improve social housing in the city, enhancing existing assets for both current and future tenants and maximising their service life.”

Delivered by main contractor, Mears Group, the improvement works focused on an external upgrade to five tenanted blocks; two on Sweetbriars Street, two on Union Street and one on Columbia Street. All works had to be carried out while the homes remained fully occupied, so the use of Kemper System’s cold-applied liquid membrane was the ideal solution for delivering a robust solution with a BBA accredited service life of 25 years, without causing undue disruption or risk to tenants. Roofing contractor, Rateavon, stripped the existing metal deck roof of each block and installed a new OSB (oriented strand board) deck as part of the strategy for maximising the service life of the existing accommodation. A Kempershield primer was then applied to the roof surface and allowed to cure before the installation of a Kempershield vapour control layer (VCL). Kemperfix adhesive was applied onto the roof surface and the Kempertherm insulation board was

VMZINC façade and roof transform 60’s office block

Foam Insulation

With a VMZINC Interlocking Panel façade and a standing seam and flat lock panel roof, the stunning £3m upgrade of Cambrian House in Shrewsbury has transformed a dreary 60’s town centre office block into an apartment building with a distinctive visual aesthetic. The zinc façade was installed to the principle elevation over the existing concrete frame, contrasting dark ANTHRA-ZINC® and engraved AZENGAR® finishes having been used to complement oak and render in the creation of 17 apartments and penthouses. Interlocking panels can be installed horizontally or vertically on a metal or a wooden framework to provide an elegant appearance with a reveal joint. AZENGAR is the first engraved zinc finish to be made available to the construction industry and as with natural zinc, it develops a natural, self-protecting patina that enhances the metal’s colour retention and lifespan.

Websters have developed a method of Polyurethane Sprayed Foam Insulation that is suitable for both old and new buildings. This continuous polyurethane foam membrane adheres to almost all surfaces and reduces heat loss by up to 80-90%.

It is an exceptional alternative to dry lining as it provides a continuous membrane of unrivalled properties. Sprayed foam insulation is particularly popular as it not only reduces heat loss but can also help keep out wind and wind driven snow; prevent tiles slipping, stops condensation and can even obviate the need for a replacement roof. Marmox Thermoblock separates Surrey house from its super basement

The technical challenges of tackling linear heat loss at the interface of a very large, traditionally built house from its fully subterranean precast concrete “Super Basement” have been addressed through the inclusion of Thermoblock units, manufactured and supplied by Marmox (UK) Limited.

The exclusive individual property being built by Searchfield Homes in Windlesham, Surrey, offers its purchasers a stunning 17,000 square feet of usable space, including a 5,500 square foot basement that has space for a swimming pool, cinema, snooker room and gymnasium. However, despite utilising a proprietary precast concrete, sectional system with integral waterproofing and insulation measures, the design and build contractor’s architectural consultants still had to specify an effective means of controlling heat loss at the ground floor perimeter. The detail would not only be required

to satisfy Part L of the Building Regulations in order to avoid the use of punishing default factors in the U-value calculations, but also be able to carry the weight of the outer elevation. The answer came in the form of 267 Marmox Thermoblocks – measuring 100 mm wide by 65 mm high and 600 mm in length - and each one of which

incorporates small cylindrical columns of high strength concrete within their low lambda value insulation. The units also feature a horizontal overlap to make installation simpler, with the joints being bonded together using Marmox Multibond adhesive, which is supplied in standard cartridges. The Site Agent on the project for Searchfield Homes explained: “This is a very large property built across three floors, including a precast concrete basement system. In order to address potential heat loss at ground level our architects, Ascot

Design, identified Marmox Thermoblock as offering the best solution, with the 600 mm long units forming a course right around the external leaf to the outside wall. The wall construction is completed by 140 mm inner leaf and a 125 mm wide cavity that will be fully filled with blown insulation to achieve a level of energy loss comfortably within what is required by the Building Regulations.” The loadbearing composite product has been developed to be incorporated into various wall constructions as a horizontal layer, equivalent to a course of bricks, in order to address a critical area of heat loss, thereby reducing energy bills and making a significant contribution to SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) calculations. Each Thermoblock is comprised of ultra-high performance XPS insulation, encapsulating miniature columns of concrete, while the top and bottom are covered by alkali resistant glass-fibre mesh, retaining a surface of fibre reinforced polymer concrete to facilitate bonding.

Value Management of any project is key to delivering product on time, in the right place, and importantly at agreed costs. Value Management goes beyond 'Value Engineering' and should be adopted by all companies who seek to provide professional services in today's construction market. Value Engineering seeks to reduce cost often by removing unnecessary physical material in a project in a move to reduce costs of material and therefore reduce the cost of the project. Value Engineering is commonly seen as a secondary operation undertaken when costs need to be reduced on a quoted project for various reasons. Of late, the term seems to have taken on a negative connotation suggesting just a reduction in material content, not always for the good of the project as a whole. Safety a priority with heavy duty stair treads

FibreGrid’s SlipGrip® Heavy Duty Anti Slip Stair Treads are produced using FibreGrid ExtremeCore™ grit, which is twice as hard wearing as the industry standard quartz. The contrasting yellow or white nosings at 55mm x 55mm comply with UK Building Regulations and the Disability Discrimination Act. An example of its application is at the Sheffield Girl's School , where FibreGrid recently completed a major installation. The many stairwells at the school were fitted with the stair treads, plus Heavy Duty GRP Sheets, resulting in an extremely slip resistant finish in a high foot trafficked area. With a pre-constructed design, SlipGrip® non-slip stair treads can be walked on immediately and fitted with ease keeping downtime to a minimum, so helping to prevent unnecessary accidents. Exemplary Public Realm With Concrete Shortlisted for the 2016 Stirling Prize, Trafalgar Place near London’s Elephant and Castle provides an exemplar for high density development and the exceptional public realm that helps define the project, featured in an important new case study from the trade body Interpave. The carefully designed external spaces which help define the project are a result of the close working relationship between landscape architects Randle Siddeley and an Interpave member paving manufacturer. Both detailing and execution are consistently high quality throughout. Enquiry

The entrance square, central pedestrian street and access ways to dwellings are characterised by high quality concrete block paving set out in patterns using five different sizes for visual richness. With a combination of three shades of grey, the paving blocks have been shotblasted for a sparkling, textured surface. For the more homely northern route and play area less formal, ‘rumbled’ concrete block paving style was used in warmer rustic colour tones. At first floor level, over enclosed car parking, a communal courtyard garden provides a flexible, usable space for residents. Concrete flag paving provides level access around the courtyard linking the various spaces generated by raised planters of varying

heights. The concrete flag paving incorporates up to 60% recycled and reclaimed materials, with granite aggregates providing exceptional performance and durability. A bespoke version was also created for the project using a double process to expose more aggregate, giving a contrasting finish to the main polished flag paved areas. Trafalgar Place provides an impressive demonstration of the potential for precast concrete paving to enhance housing and other developments while meeting today’s performance criteria. The new case study is one of many, freely available to download via where you can also request regular e:Bulletin updates from Interpave.

As the UK’s biggest independent distributor of panel products and timber, James Latham has announced the latest addition to its portfolio, a new range of Poplar Plywood.

Enquiry No.256

Responsibly sourced and ethically verified, this new range of plywood - available as both PEFC and FSC certified - is being supplied by Spanish processing giant Garnica and for distribution will be exclusively available through James Latham in the UK. Offering exceptional quality and outstanding performance properties, Poplar Plywood is very lightweight, it has a superior surface quality, is strong, exceptionally stable, easy to machine and is also easy to transport. It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications and is particularly well suited for the manufacturing of furniture, caravans, partitions, speakers, boat building or exhibition stands, in fact, anywhere that weight may be an issue. Andrew Wright, Director of Lathams Limited, explained, “It’s great news that we now have a European manufacturer of high quality plywood with the reputation, substance and credibility of an organisation like Garnica. Right from the start, we have been really impressed, not only with the products, but also the set up and the people, and I can already see lots of opportunities within markets and applications where Plywood may have been previously discounted or not even considered because of concerns over either the quality of the

product, the price or the provenance.Garnica has invested more than 30 million Euros in recent years, developing their product offering to ensure that they are at the cutting edge of global plywood manufacturing and as the exclusive distributor, we are very excited to be able to offer some of these innovative products, which much of the UK market won’t have even seen yet.” “Poplar offers tremendous flexibility and numerous features and benefits and once these have been introduced and marketed in the UK, I am confident that it will soon become a cornerstone of the plywood purchased in this country.” With seven different product families, the range is extensive and initially, James Latham will focus on offering four of these; Efficiency Poplar, in which the core and faces are made of poplar from controlled and sustainable European plantations. Duraply® where the panel offers exceptional durable properties due to an innovative ply-to-ply treatment making it fungi and insect resistant even under the most adverse weather conditions. Fireshield offering a panel which has been modified through an innovative ply-to-ply process that gives it exceptional flame retardant properties, and through which, unlike other treatments, its properties remain intact when working or sanding the panel. And finally, Elegance Birch, a Poplar panel with a birch veneer to the face and back. All products in the Elegance range are particularly noted for the beauty of their faces.
