Crown Paints is marking Ecobuild with prominent support for Britain’s biggest climate change campaign, Climate Week. The UK paint manufacturer has been announced as a national partner of the initiative, which uses high profile celebrities and community events to inspire a new wave of action to create a sustainable future. Sponsorship of Climate Week – which runs from 4 to 10 March - reinforces Crown’s long-standing commitment to the environment. The company’s award-winning programme ‘Earthbalance’ sets the standard in embedding sustainability at the heart of a business and has seen Crown gain increasing recognition as being among the top tier of sustainable businesses in the UK. Earthbalance’s progress made to date has seen Crown secure a clutch of high profile accolades in 2012, including the Sustainable Innovation Award from the British Coatings Federation, and the Sustainable Business Award For Large Companies from the Lancashire Business Environment Awards. From its stand number S330 at Ecobuild – which takes place at ExCeL, London, from 5 - 7 March - the team from Crown will be highlighting how the company’s approach can support specification professionals in areas including reduced waste streams, the achievement of BREEAM ratings and products offering extended maintenance cycles. In 2008, Crown launched ‘Earthbalance’ a dedicated sustainability programme, featuring an ambitious, longterm target to drive down its own greenhouse gas emissions, with the target of a 10 per cent reduction in 2015 – and 25 per cent in 2020. These two targets are in addition to a sustainability target of zero waste to landfill, originally targeted for December 2012 – which was achieved more than 12 months ahead of schedule. Crown’s investment in carbon footprinting technology is helping the company achieve these targets. This process enables the company to measure the footprint of all products across its range, including the specification brands of Crown Trade, Sadolin and Sandtex Trade, and then make the necessary changes to reduce the carbon output, without affecting the quality of the paint. Mark Lloyd, Crown Paints’ Sustainability Manager, said:

“We are well on track with our green commitment; and results such as the achievement of our zero waste to landfill target more than 12 months ahead of schedule reflects the success of the programme to date. “However, there’s still plenty to do and we see sustainability as a mission for the entire organisation. It’s not just about filling a market niche; it’s about changing the way we do business. “Our focus is to minimise energy, reduce, re-use or recycle waste wherever feasible and develop continuous improvement programmes and innovation initiatives to inspire products and processes with the lowest possible ecological impact. All this is undertaken with an absolute commitment not to affect our products’ performance adversely. “We also apply responsible raw material sourcing, considering the environmental and ethical effects of raw materials used within our business. “Our focus is not to just provide a few niche ‘green’ products. By measuring and evaluating the carbon footprint of everything we do, we can make improvements, without impacting on the quality of the paint we produce. “This means specifiers can be assured that they benefit from high performing quality paints, which maintain their protective and aesthetic qualities for the longer term – in itself a sustainable outcome.” Also at Ecobuild, Crown will be showing how achieving the right specification for commercial and industrial environments has been made even easier with Crown Paints’ new online tool, PaintSpec Finder.® For more details please contact Crown Paints’ Specification Services Team by calling 0845 034 1464, emailing or visit the website at Enquiry No.800.

Refurbishment & New Build

With around 40 individual buildings housing over 160,000m2 of prime office space, Cobalt Business Park is the largest complex of its kind in the UK. Located just a short drive from central Newcastle it has played a vital part in the regeneration of the region, which is now one of the nation’s most vibrant and forward thinking business hubs. Building work began over 12 years ago and being awarded Enterprise Zone status meant that tenants could enjoy free business rates and 100 per cent capital allowances for corporation tax until August 2006. This led to a plethora of blue chip multinational organisations choosing to locate there and by doing so they have brought over 9,500 jobs to the area. Cobalt Business Park offers access to a wide range of facilities and boasts a surgery, a nursery, restaurants, a swimming pool, a fitness suite and a 500 capacity delegate conference centre. In order to give those working on-site the highest levels of protection its owner, Highbridge Properties, has insisted that each of the buildings has a state-of-the-art fire detection system as part of an overall building services infrastructure. Based in Blyth, Northumberland, ARC365 is one of the north-east of England’s leading life safety installation specialists and it has enjoyed a long-term relationship with Cobalt Business Park. Chris Harris, director of ARC365, explains, ‘We were originally invited to tender for the fire detection installation in the first building.

Hochiki Europe makes life safety a walk in the Cobalt Business Park Our proposal centred on the installation of a Hochiki Europe fire detection system, which we have used almost exclusively over the last 17 years. We won the contract and since then we have been asked to carry out similar work for all but three buildings on the site.’ Although the buildings that comprise Cobalt Business Park are all different shapes and sizes, and house many different types of organisations, ARC365 tries to keep the fire detection systems as consistent as it can and introduce as many common features as possible. Harris and his team are involved when the main construction works are underway, usually through Castle Building Services Ltd, who have been involved in the electrical and mechanical disciplines of many of the buildings throughout the business park. Harris says, ‘When the developer has a client for the building, a complete fire detection system is designed and installed, based on the layout the client requires.’ If a building is unused, we usually just install a limited fire detection system in shell and core areas such as stairwells until it is occupied. Working as a team with Castle Building Services Ltd gives them the confidence that the Hochiki products we offer are of the highest quality and reliability. All of the systems installed at Cobalt Business Park are analogue addressable and most of the use Hochiki Europe’s Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP). Stuart Davies, the company’s marketing manager, explains, ‘ESP is a resilient total communications solution for intelligent fire detection and fully integrated systems. It has a multi-purpose structure that provides the flexibility and expansion to accommodate simple

addressable systems through to integrated building management and safety systems.’ The buildings’ fire detection systems are also compliant to the BS 5839 category L1 standard, which means that automatic detectors are deployed throughout all areas – including roof spaces and voids. This gives the earliest possible warning of fire and makes sure that there is sufficient time for escape. Unwanted and false alarms are a problem in any type of building but in offices, where there is a high density of people, they are particularly disruptive. Where possible, ARC365 installs Hochiki Europe’s ALG-EN optical smoke sensors, which feature the company’s High Performance Chamber Technology. Harris states, ‘This innovative chamber design minimises the differences in sensitivity experienced in flaming and smouldering fires. The result is a high performance optical chamber that is equally responsive to all smoke types and helps to reduce the possibility of unwanted alarms, as the algorithms in the devices can be adjusted to account for the different environments that they are used in.’ A fast and efficient installation is important for ARC365, and the ability to fit detectors onto a standard base unit offers significant time and cost savings, without any compromise in quality. Harris adds, ‘Our experience with other manufacturers’ products has highlighted just how well designed and thought out Hochiki Europe’s are – what can take minutes only takes seconds.’ For further information visit Enquiry No.200.

Faster Replastering with the Dryzone System The new Dryzone System from Safeguard Europe offers a faster way to replaster after treating rising damp - in just 24 hours. Using ordinary plasterboard to cover up damp and salt contaminated walls, the Dryzone System is breathable and as effective as a sand:cement render. The three key steps in the Dryzone System: • Dryzone damp-proofing cream to treat rising damp: solvent-free, patented and the best performing rising damp treatment on the market • Dryshield Cream to prime the wall: long-lasting protection against damp, salt and mould in just one coat • Drygrip Adhesive to fix plasterboard: creates a durable bond to masonry that's strongly salt and moisture resistant The Dryzone System is quicker and cheaper to install per m2 than a sand:cement render, and allows the use of cement-based plasters to be avoided when treating rising damp on heritage projects. For more information on the Dryzone System contact Safeguard Europe or visit the website for technical details. A new RIBA-approved CPD seminar on Rising Damp: Causes and Treatment is also available free-of-charge to specifiers and surveyors. Enquiry No. 202

LEVOLUX SWOTS UP AT DEPTFORD GREEN Deptford Green School, which is one of the last in the country to receive funding under the BSF programme, showcases the latest in sustainable building design, including a Levolux Solar Shading solution.

The £32 million development, designed by Watkins Gray Architects, re-unites upper and lower schools, which previously occupied separate sites, transforming education provision for 1300 pupils. The new building, which is arranged over 2 to 5 floors, boasts spacious classrooms, state-of-the-art music, sound recording and IT facilities and naturally lit circulation areas. Designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating, the building is optimised to maximise passive energy-efficiency. This included adapting the external envelope, particularly on the south-facing elevation which required a form of Brise Soleil. As the UK’s leading Solar Shading specialist, Levolux was invited to develop an external Solar Shading solution comprising Western Red Cedar Timber Fins, incorporated into horizontal projections and vertical stacks. In total, 84 aerofoil-shaped Timber Fins, each measuring 220mm wide by 40mm thick, have been incorporated into horizontal projections above ground, first and second floor

windows. Projecting 900mm from the building’s facade and extending 16 metres in length, each horizontal array comprises Timber Fins fixed at an angle of 60 degrees from vertical, between profile-cut aluminium side plates. The Timber Fins are designed to provide shade, while allowing an unobstructed outward view. In contrast, 288 aerofoil-shaped Timber Fins, also measuring 220mm wide by 40mm thick, have been incorporated into an array of vertical stacks, extending 55 metres in length and with a height of 15 metres. The Fins are fixed at an angle of 90 degrees from vertical, with a graduated pitch across each floor. At high level along each floor the pitch of the Fins is just 300mm, concentrating them where they provide the most effective shade. At eye level on each floor the pitch of the Fins is opened up to 900mm to maximise daylight levels and allow good outward views across the revamped Fordham Park. As an effective form of solar control, the Timber Fins counter the risk of excessive solar heat gain in entrance/circulation areas, classrooms

and in the dining area, by reflecting and absorbing solar energy before it is transmitted through glass. The pitch and angle of the Fins ensures they work most effectively in the summer when the sun is at its peak intensity and is higher in the sky. In the winter the sun is less powerful and is lower in the sky, so its rays can pass through the Fins and solar energy can be transmitted through the glass helping to heat the building. As usual, all timber sourced for this project by Levolux was FSC-certified with a full chain of custody. Western Red Cedar is a lightweight, durable timber and when left untreated, as in this case, it gradually acquires an attractive, silver-grey patina. To complement the installation, the supporting structure, including support arms and brackets were finished in a graphite grey powder coating.

Deptford Green School provides an exceptional environment for local students to thrive in very challenging times. By adopting highly sustainable and energy efficient features, such as the external Timber Fins by Levolux, the school has created the optimum conditions for students to fulfil their best potential.

ALU-TIMBER - NEW PRODUCT Merging Material Solutions - Creating sustainable, energy efficient buildings is a cornerstone of design. The facade is now a functional element to the building; a membrane which keeps the building warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, reducing the need for additional energy from heating or air conditioning. The materials used must be sustainable, renewable and have a real end of life use. Taking all current specification and building regulation demands into consideration, The Parkside Group Limited are pleased to launch Alu-Timber, a range of aluminium/timber windows, doors and framing, that combines sustainably grown FSC or PEFC timbers with 100% recyclable aluminium. The Alu-Timber range includes casement, tilt and turn windows and an open-in and open-out door. Due to the superior jointing of Alu-Timber, it has inherently high deflection loads. Alu-Timber can therefore be used as a window walling suite up to storey height, creating modular framing systems with opening windows and doors. Stokvis offers efficiency and flexibility with Econo-Air The new Econo-Air gas-fired heating and ventilation systems from Stokvis offer excellent indoor air quality and optimum energy efficiency for large buildings across a range of industrial and commercial applications. Stokvis has developed the Econo-Air range specifically for large open interior spaces such as warehouses, factories, sports centres and theatres. A choice of air distribution heads is available to give designers the option of ductless air distribution, thereby eliminating the need for complex ductwork and high level destratification fan units.

Available as both direct fired and indirect fired units, the Econo-Air range is flexible and highly adaptable to the end-user’s requirements.

Where ductwork is required, the systems can be configured to allow for ductwork resistance of up to 2,000 Pascals. They are therefore ideal for use with air induction systems. Direct-fired units are available with outputs from 15kW to 900 kW and provide a fixed rate of heated fresh air into the building space. Where a constant-rate extract system is employed, these units supply make-up air to maintain a pressure balance and prevent a build up of negative pressure inside the building. Indirect gas-fired units offer several advantages over traditional heat exchangers, with reduced airflow resistance leading to lower fan power requirements and thus higher efficiencies. Indirect fired Econo-Air models are available with outputs from 30kW and 1,200kW. Enquiry No. 213

Dallmer Renova Roof Drain - Ideal for Retrofit When re-roofing, a major problem is often the removal of existing roof drains before installing new ones and connecting them inside the building to existing drain-pipes. Dallmer’s Renova 63T Roof Drain is a product that completely overcomes this problem and therefore reduces dramatically the overall cost of roof renovation. RenovaDrain is specifically designed to push down through the existing drain and inside the existing drainpipe, creating a watertight seal via the lip-seals on the down pipe of the drain. This well conceived design is made with the precision for which the Dallmer name is respected throughout world – thousands are in use in Europe and the USA. RenovaDrain has recently been upgraded with improved, dedicated versions for use with bitumen felt – ‘DallBit’ - and TPO membranes. A version for welding to PVC remains plus the ‘standard’ version for EPDM – or any other membrane. Improvements include extended length (up to 460mm from roof level) to cater for ever thicker layers of insulation and a dome grating with a greater free area to avoid the problem of possible clogging by roof-blown rubbish. The Dallmer 84 version is smaller but just as easy to fit and is widely used where additional insulation is not being laid or remedial work with a flat grate on paved terraces. Both models of Renova are made from durable, UV-stabilized polypropylene with rubber comoulding for the ribbed lip-seals ensures that they have ample depth to make a secure seal with the inside of the old drain.

heat reflective membranes. IKOslate is a composite roof tile manufactured from mineral reinforced, 99% recycled and re-engineered materials. Its unique structure gives it superior strength and makes it easier to handle and install. IKOslate has the same aesthetic qualities as slate because moulds of quarried slates are used to form the composite tiles. Each mould imparts different textures and patterns to the tile and its natural look is enhanced by a realistic “slate grey” finish. Ultimo HS breather membrane is able to cope with the demands of today’s house building in innovative ways which are not possible with

conventional underslating membranes. With the majority of membranes focusing simply on vapour permeability, there can be a danger of moisture overload as newly occupied (and heated) houses dry out quickly. However, Ultimo HS is an intelligent membrane that can deal with high levels of humidity and is able to absorb and release large amounts of moisture vapour in a measured, effective way. Therefore, the risks associated with condensation are virtually eliminated with Ultimo HS. The membrane’s inherent properties also mean that it is able to effectively balance the requirement for heat

retention within the roof void with the need to control condensation at roof level. Ultimo HS has similar vapour permeability properties to IKO’s established Rubershield membranes, but is capable of absorbing moisture and retaining it until such time as the climatic conditions allow for its release by evaporation. In this way, excess condensation moisture resulting from new build or renovation wet-trades can be ‘managed intelligently’ instead of resulting in the condensation problems normally associated with these severe conditions. Alan Macklin is Group Technical Manager at Elta and recognises the particularly opportune timing of Ecobuild this year – “Sustainability and an environmentally aware approach to building is what Ecobuild is all about so it couldn’t have come at a better time so hard on the heels of the new legislation being implemented. We have spent considerable time and effort, and will continue to do so, in producing information which is helpful to the market in understanding the implications of this very specific focus on the energy efficiency of fans. But one of the prime benefits of an exhibition is the opportunity it presents for face to face interaction, a chance for people to pose their questions to us and for us to explain what they now need to know in specifying fans for HVAC applications.”

Ecobuild proves perfect timing for new fan efficiency focus

Exhibiting on Stand N3430 at Ecobuild 2013, Elta Fans will be focusing on a number of developments, including the new ErP (Energy related Products) Directive, introduced on 1 January 2013 - a piece of legislation that is having a profound effect on the building services sector.

A number of fans will be on show from the Elta Select range, supported by a brand new catalogue which identifies the products from Elta that are compliant with the legislation. By providing a visual reference point for visitors to understand what constitutes compliant and non-compliant products, the stand graphics will illustrate the reasons why fans meet the new energy efficiency requirements and, importantly, why many products are unaffected whilst legislation remains in draft form.Amongst the fans on the stand will be a Viper SCC EC, a Raptor SPA EC and SDA EC, and a Compact SCP, along with a Komfovent Domekt heat recovery unit and the ZOO Fan EC model, highlighting Elta Fans’ development programme of designing and manufacturing units to meet the Fan Motor Efficiency (FMEG) and Specific Fan Power (SFP) values stipulated under the ErP Directive. Facilitating innovative design at Ecobuild 2013 At this year’s Ecobuild, Marley Eternit will be showcasing the sustainability benefits of fibre cement slates and unveiling some innovative additions to the range, as well as demonstrating further proof of the company’s own environmental credentials. Marley Eternit will be exhibiting its range of fibre cement slates, which can not only achieve an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide to Specification but also have BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing accreditation and a low carbon footprint of just 12.7 CO2e /m2 (based on 600 x 300 slate at 100mm lap), as

independently certified by Carbon Trust Certification Ltd. Not only will visitors to the stand (N1230) be able to find out about the whole life cycle sustainability properties of fibre cement but they will also be able to witness the versatility of this well established construction material for themselves, by sitting on furniture entirely made from fibre cement. The company is also pleased to announce that its popular Birkdale slate will be available with a new fixing to facilitate lower pitch designs. The slate creates more flexible design opportunities for specifiers, designers and contractors alike, reaching pitches as low as 15°. In addition, visitors to the stand at Ecobuild will be able to see a demonstration of BIM Space, Marley Eternit’s set of free to download

Building Information Modelling (BIM) objects, which for the first time will include fibre cement slates. Sarah Harding, marketing manager from Marley Eternit, explains: “We wanted to launch BIM for our fibre cement slates at Ecobuild because it is starting to play such an important role in helping specifiers create developments faster, more economically and with less environmental impact. This complements the BIM objects already available on our range of facades and Cedral Weatherboard. “Just as BIM places new emphasis on the lifecycle of a construction project, we wanted to take the opportunity at Ecobuild to highlight the sustainability properties throughout the whole life cycle of fibre cement. Not only does it offer strong environmental credentials in the lifecycle of the building but it can

also be fully recycled at the end of its use. Waste fibre cement can be ground down and used to replace limestone and shale in clinker production, the essential ingredients for Portland cement. Using fibre cement in this way not only removes 100% of the fibre cement waste but also increases the sustainability of clinker production. “The advent of BIM also means that environmental labelling of products is becoming even more important and manufacturers need to be able to demonstrate their sustainability credentials across a broader range of areas. We will be using Ecobuild, not only to demonstrate sustainable product innovation but also to further prove our strong environmental credentials as the only roofing manufacturer in the UK to achieve independent carbon footprint certification for a range of products by Carbon Trust Certification Ltd. The last year has also seen us receive BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing accreditation on our full range of roofing products.” Marley Eternit will be exhibiting at Ecobuild stand N1230. Crown Paints’ Colour Service drew up a sensitive palette of shades using the three paints, in-keeping with the building’s 18th Century heritage, based on gentle golds, blues and creams. Gary Wilkes is the team manager for the estates office at Wrightington Hospital, part of the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. Providing easy and reliable access to services such as HVAC, electrics and data was an inconspicuous but nonetheless vital part of the £40million project to transform this historic landmark into London’s newest international-style gaming centre. A winning combination of Howe Green’s 3500, 5000 and 7500 Series access covers was selected for various size and load bearing requirements and to suit the different types of flooring within the building. These included screeded areas in basement and back of house with raised timber floors front of house and in gaming and entertainment zones. The project also called for more than 40 of Howe Green’s 5000 series access covers to be made to order with bespoke cable outlets to serve the sea of machines on The Hippodrome’s busy gaming floors. Featuring double seals to meet the highest standards of hygiene and security, the access covers are corrosion and maintenance-free and designed to

fit perfectly flush with their surround to avoid distortion and prevent any slips or trips. Les Dedman, Projects Director at Beck Interiors commented, “We chose Howe Green’s access covers because of their quality and reliability and in the confidence that the product supplied was going to achieve all the varying requirements”. The Hippodrome has been through many guises since it opened in 1900 with Charlie Chaplin performing on opening night. It now promises visitors modern day glamour and razzmatazz over 5 floors with bars, restaurant and shows as well as state-of the-art gaming. Howe Green’s quality access solutions will make for easy maintenance of the building, helping it meet the demands of the many thousands of visitors expected to walk through it’s doors each year. Structures that are earth retaining can be damaged by moisture penetration from the outside or by the water under hydrostatic pressure. To combat this, Delta Membrane Systems offers DELTA GEO-DRAIN Quattro. Offering high levels of reliability with thick viscoplastic coatings, DELTA GEODRAIN Quattro features a microperforated slip film which - together with the additional filter cloth - acts as a backup drainage layer behind the dimpled sheet. This ensures any water is safely drained off. The slip film has the added benefit of preventing the transmission of movement to the waterproof coating. Installation is simple and straightforward. Supplied in roll-form, DELTA GEO-DRAIN Quattro is applied to the waterproofed surface without any need for special grade backfill. DELTA MEMBRANE SYSTEMS

First UK installation of Rehau chilled ceiling system in The Crystal The Crystal, a Sustainable Cities Initiative by Siemens, located in London’s Royal Victoria Dock, is the first building in the UK to use REHAU’s chilled ceiling system. Two 30m² conference rooms in London’s newest landmark, which also houses the world’s largest exhibition on the future of sustainable cities, have been fitted with REHAU’s new high performance chilled ceiling panels to provide efficient and effective localised cooling. The chilled beams used elsewhere in the 6,300m² building could not be used for the conference rooms where suspended ceilings were required so the consultants looked for an alternative solution which offered comparable levels of efficiency. After a CPD presentation from REHAU, they chose the new high performance chilled ceiling solution which comprises standard gypsum plasterboard panels with grooves milled into them to accommodate loops of pre-integrated 10mm RAUTHERM S PE-Xa pipework. The panels are pre-assembled with the pipe in loops 45mm apart and come

complete with an extensive range of fittings to secure the boards to the suspended ceiling hardware. The pipe tails are simply connected into a manifold system to the supply of chilled water using REHAU’s renowned EVERLOC compression sleeve fittings which guarantees no leaks. With a cooling capacity of up to 75.5 W/m², the high performance chilled ceiling panels offer a combination of high output and energy efficiency. At the Crystal, they are linked to the supply of chilled water generated by a reversible ground source heat pump with chiller unit attached and operate in line with the BREAAM Outstanding assessment which the building has achieved. The REHAU chilled ceiling system was installed by M&E contractors Lorne Stewart. Installation was quick and easy thanks to the preassembled ceiling element and the predrilled fixing grid. There are also four board sizes available in the system which means it is simply to configure the system to fit the required ceiling space. Tony Harbour who along with

Graham Richardson was responsible for the design of the project within REHAU, said: “Our chilled ceiling system, which is available in standard, high performance and acoustic versions, has already been specified extensively in mainland Europe but this is the first installation in the UK. “The fact that this is in a building which has been recognised as being a benchmark in sustainable design and construction excellence is particularly pleasing.” The Crystal is claimed to the one of the world’s greenest buildings. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, it serves as a conference centre, global hub for thought leadership in city technology and innovation centre all in one. It is open to the public from Tuesdays to Sundays (9am - 5pm) with a 2,000m² exhibition space showcasing best practice in urban planning and design. Web:

Clearly, with shipboard space at a premium, an ‘under-floor’ system that used no wall space was essential. Mill Meadow Eco-Homes, a luxury, selfcatering, eco lodge holiday development situated on the edge of Somerset’s Quantock Hills, has opted for Polypipe Ventilation’s Heat Recovery and Domus Radial Duct System for its latest property. Chris Heayns, Managing Director of Mill Meadow, specified Polypipe’s MVHR and Radial duct system because of its environmental benefits and the ability to work within this unusual timber structure: “we decided to use MVHR as the homes are very air tight, so it didn’t make sense cutting holes in the walls and inserting trickle vents. However, one of the issues we had was that the wood in these lodges continually moves, which could be a problem for rigid ducting. That’s why we were particularly keen on Polypipe’s Domus Radial duct system as its duct is flexible and will move with the house. Vynagrip matting, manufactured by Plastic Extruders Ltd, is solving a slippery problem for the largest fish shop in Piraeus, the port of Athens in Greece. Fresh off the boats each day, large quantities of fish are delivered together with packed ice, while over counter machines continually spray water to keep the fish wet. The result was that the shop’s tiled floor used to become very slippery with increased risk of slip and fall accidents. To solve this problem, Vynagrip matting was laid alongside the counters to create a safe and slip resistant surface. This popular matting is self-draining because its open grid format and its textured surface quickly and efficiently drain large amounts of water. Alongside its Nuway Tuftiguard rigid engineered matting ranges, with their double-sided reversible format, Forbo now offers three different single-sided, barrier mat designs - Nuway Grid, Connect and Cable. This range extension means that clients looking to keep interiors clean, dry and safe from slip hazards can now find a Nuway entrance flooring solution to meet every budget and technical specification. ity nal ctio fun Nuway Cable with roll-up Furthermore, the extended colour offer ensures that this essential first line of defence against footborne soil and moisture can be fully integrated into the overall floor scheme, co-ordinating perfectly with secondary ‘wipe-off’ textile entrance flooring and other floor finishes. Nuway Connect is a versatile rigid entrance system supplied in a ‘closed’ or ‘open’ construction in 10mm, 17mm and 22mm heights with carrier strips in a low lustre anodised aluminum finish that helps to prevent ‘strobing’ in bright conditions. The range of inserts, which can be mixed and matched, Nuway Grid can be teamed up with Forbo’s Coral Entrance matting and other floor finishes

includes rubber, bristle and Coral Classic textile strips in six colours. The open version of Nuway Connect can be rolled up, making it easier to clean the matwell. Nuway Grid, in 12mm and 17mm heights, is a tough and economical entrance flooring solution for high traffic entrance areas where aesthetic considerations are paramount. Grid’s low lustre anodised aluminium carrier sections interlock for durability creating a closed system and the infill strips are joined together by rubber double connecting strips on the underside to dampen sound and vibration. An array of infill materials facilitates perfect colour matching with Forbo’s Coral secondary matting, including textile strips in 13 different colourways from the Coral Classic, Brush Activ and Burford ranges, with other inserts available to special order. If a Nuway Grid mat is required for use outside, rubber inlays are also available. Window repair specialist joins Steel Window Association

s f e e al -

A Liverpool based specialist in the repair of steel and other metal window frames has joined the Steel Window Association, attracted by the trade body’s reputation within the construction industry and the access to business support which membership offers. The Window Repair Company NW Ltd., was established 20 years ago and has built up its business working in the education, commercial and other nondomestic sectors; being active right across the country, and able to undertake the most difficult of technical challenges. Managing Director Dave Larner, comments: “While we are very much specialists in the repair of steel, we are also able to fabricate replacement frames where repair is not feasible. This has led us to produce sections from scratch where they have not been available for the older style frames; and we have also had a lot of work come our way on cast iron frames in recent times. The Grass is Guaranteed to be Greener with Sika Liquid Plastics Sika Liquid Plastics, pioneer of cold applied liquid roofing systems, is pleased to announce the launch of its new range of green roof systems – which includes all types of green roof finishing options.

“We’ve been offering green roofs for around five years,” comments Steve Leech, National Sales Manager for the brand, “The difference is that we can now offer a fully branded system with each component covered by our market leading guarantee.” What this new product offer gives specifiers is peace of mind that every element of the green roof system is guaranteed to last as long as the waterproofing – which can be up to 25 years – as long as the appropriate maintenance contract is in operation. Sika Liquid Plastics has identified that many systems on the market are not installed in accordance with best

practice and Green Roof Organisation (GRO) guidelines, resulting in the green element becoming unhealthy or even eventually dying. Specifiers also benefit from all the other key advantages of using a Sika Liquid Plastics system, including a seamless and flexible waterproof membrane, completely cold installation, and the ability to easily accommodate any detail areas on the roof. And by using a Quality Assured Contractor each project will also receive full technical support from the Sika Liquid Plastics team, with guaranteed high quality workmanship.

“As part of this product launch we’ve also worked closely with a number of specialist green roof installers,” continues Steve, “As a result we now have Sika Registered Green Roof contractors who are experts in installing and maintaining the green element of the system.” A new Green Roof Specification Guide has been produced to support the new launch and is available for download from the Sika Liquid Plastics website at Further information can also be found here or by calling 01772 259781. Central to the transformation

has been the specification of Marley Eternit’s Thrutone slate, as StudioDuB architect Gordon Duffy explains: “We retained the house footprint, eaves and the ridge height only, and totally reworked the previous design leaving nothing but the silhouette. We cloaked the roof and walls in the Thrutone slate as we were attracted to the product’s uniform nature, unit size and sharp look. MARLEY ETERNIT

Solar power is blooming marvellous for residents at The Rose Garden Residents at The Rose Garden Extracare village in Hereford are set to make significant energy savings, thanks to an 80-kilowatt solar energy system installed by renewable energy specialist Eco2Solar. The major investment by Festival Housing, owners of The Rose Garden, is expected to save each resident around £80 per year on their energy bills, as well as providing 33.5 tonnes of carbon savings per year. Kidderminster based Eco2Solar was selected as project installer to manage Festival’s biggest solar panel installation to date at The Rose Garden, following a competitive tendering process. The Rose Garden system comprises 245 Sunpower E20/333 panels and is expected to produce more than 67,042 units of ‘green’ energy every year – equivalent to the annual electricity use of 20 average households. All electricity generated will be used on site, helping to reduce service charges for residents living at The Rose Garden. Festival Housing will also benefit from the government-backed Feed in Tariff (FIT) and is expecting to generate a significant sum in tax-free income. “Eco2Solar worked hard and efficiently to ensure The Rose Garden solar PV installation was a complete success, with little disruption for our residents,” commented Simon Williams,

maintenance manager at Festival Housing. He said: “Festival’s residents will benefit hugely from these new solar panels as they will see a significant reduction in their energy bills through their service charge. “We already regularly install solar panels on our domestic properties but this has been Festival’s biggest solar panel project so far. Over the lifetime of the panels, the system will pay for itself accounting for both the Feed-in-Tariff income and the savings created from the electricity generation.” As part of its on-going partnership with Festival Housing, Eco2Solar has recently completed solar PV installations on 180 domestic homes located in Worcestershire and Herefordshire. “We are delighted to strengthen our partnership and help Festival generate its own electricity at The Rose Garden,” commented Paul Hutchens, managing director of Eco2Solar. He added: “It’s fantastic to see residents at The Rose Garden benefit from Festival’s investment in solar PV especially at a time when energy prices are getting significantly higher.” The Rose Garden offers an innovative approach to retirement living aimed at the over 55s. Van users: summer is on its way Steve Clarke, general manager of The Fuelcard People, has reminded users of vans and other light commercial vehicles that freezing weather is never permanent: “Summer is really not that far off.” He was making the point that time passes faster than we realise, to show how easy it can be to overlook some infrequent tasks. “You can’t forget

about insurance, MOT or Road Tax,” he said, “but it’s easy to put off the annual fuel card review.” He said that failing to obey the law can be costly, but forgetting to check the fuel card market each year can be even more expensive. “A fine is a one-off charge,” he said, “and is typically relatively low for a first offence. Carrying on with last year’s fuel card, without checking your options, could mean paying for the neglect every time a nozzle is put into the tank.” He pointed out that fuel cards, and their suppliers, are not all the same. Today’s options are not the same as a year ago. THE FUELCARD PEOPLE Enquiry No.480.

It is the second ISO 14001 accreditation achieved by the Lanes Group. The company’s rail division, based in Rainham, Essex, achieved the standard in 2010. John Glover, the Health, Safety, Environment & Quality Manager at Lanes Group, said: “This is a significant achievement, especially given the size of the new operation and the speed with which it has been mobilised.” LANES FOR DRAINS Enquiry No.484.

Building Adhesives Limited celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2013, marking an unbroken half-century of leadership in professional tile adhesives and grouts. Building Adhesives Limited was formed in 1963 when the tile manufacturers within the British Ceramic Tile Council – increasingly concerned over adhesive technology developments – decided to form a company to develop a range of high-quality ‘new technology’ adhesives, backed by comprehensive technical advice. Prior to this, four-fifths of fixers were still using a sand-and-cement mix that would have been familiar to their Victorian predecessors. Some proprietary adhesives had been around since the 1950s, but minimal technical support had hindered fixer confidence at a time when a new tile body and manufacturing methods were also developing. VEKA conservatory stands up to Hurricane Sandy When Hurricane Sandy almost completely destroyed a New Jersey homeowners' conservatory, it was Network VEKA and New York-based Hampton Conservatories, LLC to the rescue!
