KEMPER SYSTEM Address: Works Road, Letchwork, Hertfordshire SG6 1WL Tel: (0)1925 445532 Email: enquiries@kempersystem.co.uk Web: www.kempersystem.co.uk

Kemper System answers towering challenge in New York Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR cold liquid applied membrane has been used as the waterproofing system for the tallest building in the Western hemisphere: the 1,776ft One World Trade Center in New York. Rising to 104 storeys and constructed in a $3.9 billion project lasting more than a decade, the One World Trade Center, also known as the “Freedom Tower” is the Centerpiece of the re-built World Trade Center complex constructed on the site of ground zero. The 1800m2 roof is not only extremely high, but also features extensive exposed steel details and up to 400 penetrations, including the spire, with no area larger than 10ft x 10ft without some form of penetration; all of which had to be sealed effectively using a system that could be applied by a small team, with restricted access and without the use of hot works or heavy equipment.

Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid-applied resin membrane was specified for the main roof and the louvre areas on lower floors. The penetrations, drains, curbs and perimeters were all protected and then overlapped by the membrane in the larger expanse to provide a seamless, durable and reinforced waterproofing membrane across the entire roof. As the cold-applied resin bonds directly to the substrate it is particularly effective in coping with wind-uplift which was a major consideration for the chosen system. In line with US Building Code requirements, the system was completed with a white reflective coating to reduce the urban heat island effect. Stuart Hicks from Kemper System comments: “Few projects are as iconic or as challenging as the One World Trade Center scheme but Kemperol 2K-PUR’s ease of application and long-term waterproofing performance made it ideally suited to both the installation challenges and the long-term requirements of the building.” Sustainability Kemperol 2K-PUR resin system is 80 percent from renewable materials, which fit with the overall design goals for the project. Nearly 75 percent of 1 WTC is made from recycled or eco-friendly building materials, and the building’s green design earned LEED Gold Certification.

The VEKA UK Group unveils the NEW M70 system The Matrix 70 Window System from VEKA has led the industry for decades, with its classic good looks and impressive technical performance. Now, thanks to ongoing investment in the supplier's PVC-U systems, a new, even more energy-efficient M70 system has been launched with five chambers within the profile, along with its predecessor's tried and tested steel reinforcements. MD Dave Jones said: “The VEKA UK Group constantly strives to update and improve our product range to ensure it is constantly evolving. We know that to maintain our position as the industry leader, our products have to be the best they can be. In our 30th year of UK manufacturing, we're proud to have designed and launched the next generation of M70. “The NEW 2016 M70 is a fullyintegrated, multi-chambered, bevelled 70mm system with steel reinforcement sections. Additional chambers have increased the thermal performance to meet the demanding current and future requirements for more energy-efficient products, while an updated contemporary bevel will complement any style of home or commercial property.

“The demand for bevelled systems within the commercial and social housing markets remains as strong as ever, with this style of profile accounting for the majority of installations in these sectors. The clean bevelled lines of the new M70 will also appeal to homeowners looking for contemporary aesthetics to enhance their home. “During the design process of the new M70, we also took the opportunity to completely redesign our bay pole system based on feedback from customers. The new system is quicker and simpler to fabricate and faster to fit, while enhanced jacking poles provide easy access to allow for on-site adjustment. A choice of neat trim covers in plain or featured finishes offers excellent aesthetics for the homeowner, while minimising any risk of damage. “Our well-respected Infinity recycled profile system will also be relaunched, offering all the same added features and benefits of the new M70, along with a recycled core containing up to 80% recycled content – ideal for commercial applications. South Kirkby-based VEKA fabricator Bennion and Sons Ltd was one of the very first companies to adopt the new system, and the team couldn't be happier with the outcome. Director Sam Bennion explains: “Bennion and Sons was established as a building contractors more than 100 years ago and we have a long-standing reputation for quality and service. “We've been using VEKA systems for years now, as we know the company shares our commitment to quality. We had no hesitation in adopting the new M70 system because VEKA products are second-to-none and we know that our customers will be thrilled with the increased potential for energy efficiency.

Omnie Systems help self-builder achieve low energy profile Exeter based Timóleon has provided a heating and ventilation solution for a self-builder to achieve his ambition of creating a new home, with a very low level of environmental impact and running costs. This results in a property with high standards of indoor air quality and comfort. The dwelling has been constructed as a single storey, deep plan structure within a walled garden in the village of Bradninch in Devon. The ultra-sustainable design features not just an Omnie 7kW Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), delivering domestic hot water and warmth via the manufacturer’s Omnie Foilboard Floating UFH System, but also an Omnie Compact 185 Heat Recovery Unit (HRU), supplying pre- warmed air throughout. Now with the rural retreat completed the Omnie equipment is fulfilling on all of the design intentions, as the owner of the property commented: “I wanted to build a home that was as low energy as possible and to take a responsible approach to the specification of its building services so that it would not only provide peace of mind for myself in terms of future

running costs, but also make a positive contribution in respect of concerns over carbon reduction and our energy security.” The accommodation comprises a spacious lounge-dining area orientated to a courtyard garden with two bedrooms plus a further office/third bedroom. There is also a main bathroom with shower and bath, a separate cloakroom close to the kitchen and a plant room containing all of the Omnie equipment. The LWD 70 ASX ASHP is ideal for installations where there are other properties within close proximity; generating as it does a noise level of just 45 dB at a distance of one metre. This single phase machine is very efficient, with a typical Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 4.24 at design conditions A7/W35 which ensure low running costs whilst also qualifying for the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Representing the latest in heat pump technology from renowned German specialist, Alpha InnoTec, the unit can achieve flow temperatures of up to 70 degrees centigrade using a low Global Warming Potential refrigerant (R290). The LWD70 ASX has a corrosion proof coating, which prolongs the life of the heat pump making it suitable for coastal areas, all Omnie heat pumps come with a 5 year parts warranty as standard. Timóleon supported its design & supply with technical assistance at the specification stage, plus full installation drawings & heating schematics identifying information such as ideal positions for the manifolds for the UFH and the location for the HRU distribution using 75 mm diameter air ducts Additional technical support is provided with every heat pump with final commissioning and the 1 year back up (Gold) support service, which includes remote access package making it easy to monitor the performance of the heat pump.

Vicaima turn on design flair at Electricity Vicaima innovative door designs have been featured prominently in a landmark city centre project for Crest Nicholson, which sees a modern apartment complex created in a former 1930’s iconic utility building. Electricity House has stood at the very heart of Bristol City centre since its construction in the late 1930’s and was perhaps best known as the home of the South West Electricity Board. Designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also famously created the much loved red telephone box, this building has commanded attention for generations. With its Portland stone façade and magnificent curved frontage, the building embodies the grace of the Art Deco era. Now this bygone treasure has taken on a new lease of life following its lovingly re-imagined and inspired regeneration by Quality developer Crest Nicholson. They have created luxury living space by blending period charm with contemporary interior design. Of course inspired design requires inspirational products and so Crest chose Vicaima to enhance the apartment entrance doors with Dekordor 3D Portaro matching door and frame systems. This was further augmented by a surrounding and matching wall panelling which incorporated distinctive back

lit apartment numbering. Performance was to client requirements which included certified FD30 fire doors with a roller lock and eye viewer. Dekordor 3D provides a horizontal and highly tactile grain effect and Crest selected 3D Grey finish to provide the perfect tonal contrast to the wall and floor covering. 3D Grey was also chosen for the communal areas, including the striking and visually dominating atrium area, where occupants enjoy a panoramic view of multiple floor levels, displaying Vicaima doors at every level. Inside the apartments and penthouses themselves, Vicaima Satin White doors with Easi-Fit frames were selected. These ultra-smooth white lacquered doors provide a luxurious look and feel at every turn and fit perfectly with the superior build quality synonymous with this project. The design has been further embellished with the addition of a refined groove pattern, which was also carried through onto the architraves to add yet another design element. Overall the project is a fine example of regeneration at its best and Vicaima products are sure to grace this reincarnation for generations to come. Vicaima offer an extensive range of innovative design options, with fire, acoustic and security performance for luxury housing and modern apartment living space.

Sika Everbuild achieve ISO Accreditation Sika Everbuild are thrilled to announce that they have now been certified to the new international standard for quality ISO 9001:2015 by the British Standard Institute (BSI). The road to achieving ISO 9001 2015 began in 2014 with John Peers, Quality Manager and Andrew Stockill, Quality Assurance Co-Ordinator attending seminars on the changes. In 2015 a three day training course helped them to gain the knowledge of the auditing process, transition stages and how to implement the new standard within the company. An initial assessment was conducted by the BSI in February 2016 which established that they were taking the correct approach to meet the new standards requirements. All that was required then was to pass the BSIs audit to the new standard and be passed by their compliance team afterwards. Additionally, Sika Everbuild are also pleased to have achieved the environmental standard ISO 14001:2015 from Quay Audit UK, making them the first UK based Sika company to achieve both standards. The aim of the new

standard is to improve leadership ‘buy in’ within the company and to move to a more risk based way of thinking. Gaining certification for the new Environmental Management Systems started with a gap analysis which identified procedures and processes that needed changes to meet the requirements of the new standard. This was a great opportunity for David Whitford, EHS Manager at Sika Everbuild, to review and enhance many of the existing processes and assess opportunities to further enhance the sites environmental objectives. On gaining these globally recognised standards, Lisa Broadhead, Operations Manager, who was also involved in the project said ‘it has been a long process for the dedicated teams involved and is a huge achievement for the site. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved for their hard work to achieve these standards.’ And if that isn’t enough, a busy time continues for the EHS team at Sika Everbuild as they work towards certification for the Occupational Health & Safety standard, OHSAS18001, later this year.

Marmox Multiboard Peterborough Pool Swimming pools present a notoriously aggressive environment for building materials including reinforced concrete, so it is a measure of Marmox Multiboard’s inherent durability and other attributes that it has been specified for an unusually challenging refurbishment contract at a leisure centre in Peterborough. The Regional Fitness & Swimming Centre is just a short walk from Peterborough Cathedral in the city centre and is popular with families as well as clubs and schools, attracted by the facilities and modern styling. Unfortunately, however, the warm moist conditions had caused areas of the paintwork around insides of the very large skylights to peel. High above the water and with asbestos present in the original lining panels, this meant a maintenance nightmare.

Main contractor Amey was successful in tendering for the wider project, but brought in Commercial Rope Access with its team of abseillers to tackle relining the nine rooflights: each of which measures 8.5 x 4.5 metres and is five metres deep. Working at night, the four man team, with a fifth assisting on the ground, erected an ‘umbrella’ structure beneath each rooflight in turn to prevent any tools or debris falling into the water. Then following the specification for the upgrade, half-size sheets of Marmox Multiboard, measuring 1250 x 600 mm, were able to be fixed directly over the top of the existing asbestos based substrate, the Multiboards also offer a greatly improved thermal performance which will help prevent problems of condensation forming. The boards had been treated with one coat of EP150 on the reverse side and received a further two coats on the visible face. Despite the working time restrictions, the difficulties of accessing the upstand areas and the care required in dealing with asbestos in such a public space, the refurbishment of the rooflights was successfully completed with three months. Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. They are both light to handle and easy to cut, while still being able to sustain substantial loadings if required.
