Central Docks District

The Central Docks neighbourhood will form part of this world class destination on Liverpool’s iconic waterfront and is tipped to be one of the hottest property investments around, with places to live, work and unwind coming together to form a new 24-hour community. This new neighbourhood will bring life back to the former docklands site which has sat dormant for many years.

The £5 billion Liverpool Waters project will transform 150 acres of historic docklands, the biggest single regeneration project in the history of Liverpool and one of the biggest of its kind anywhere in the world. HEATING & ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The eight new plots at Central Docks are already attracting interest from investors and developers, with several parties visiting Liverpool to see the opportunities on offer first hand. This Central Docks neighbourhood will be a world class business and leisure district, with over 2,000,000 sqft of mixed use floorspace including 750,000 sqft of quality office space, providing occupiers the rare opportunity of a tranquil setting in the heart of

Liverpool city centre, and over 1,000 new waterfront apartments in buildings up to 44 storeys high. All of these new spaces will benefit from a 17 acre public park and views overlooking the River Mersey and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Lindsey Ashworth, Director of Development of Liverpool Waters, said: “Liverpool Waters is a unique opportunity to invest in a worldfamous waterfront and it’s no surprise that this latest phase of the project has already generated interest from investors and developers.

stunning views where people and businesses can flourish together. Unveiling this southern part of the Central Docks neighbourhood marks the next chapter in the Liverpool Waters story and brings us one step closer to reestablishing Liverpool’s waterfront as a gateway to the world.”

“Central Docks represents a watershed moment for Liverpool Waters. There has been an incredible amount of work done behind the scenes to get us to this point but thanks to the positive attitude of the people of Liverpool, Liverpool City Council and other partners we are now in a position to proceed with this next exciting phase of the project.

Although the masterplan for Liverpool Waters was announced ten years ago, progress has so far concentrated on the Princes Dock neighbourhood, the new home of the Cruise Liner Terminal, with the bulk of effort going on behind the scenes to secure detailed planning permissions. By the end of this year, the team at Liverpool Waters are expecting to see over £300 million of construction work starting on site.

“It is great to see so many of the region’s leading developers and city leaders joining us at MIPIM to showcase the opportunities on offer at Liverpool Waters and is testament to our shared commitment to re-establishing Liverpool as a global city.

Ian Pollitt, Assistant Project Director at Liverpool Waters, said:

“Our ambition has always been to create a waterfront for the world, a sustainable environment with

New eco business centre breaks ground Continued from Frontcover PERCH, Elmsbrook sits in a very accessible area where people can travel to work in sustainable ways, either on foot, by bike or public transport, meaning the use of private cars would be reduced. Ben Ramsay, Operations Director for KIER construction said: “Over the last year we have been working with Cherwell District Council and the team to bring this exciting, innovative facility to this point. Our focus is now to build and integrate the concept seamlessly into the new Bicester Eco Town.

We will be engaging with the local community to ensure our construction activities are well communicated and that we create opportunities to contribute back into the area. “ The fabric first approach creates a building that is well insulated to reduce heat loss during the winter, and combining natural and mechanical ventilation maintains thermal comfort and high levels of fresh air throughout the year. Rooftop solar panels will also be installed, and the smart design will help minimise energy and water consumption.

Planning submitted for next phase of regeneration at Pennywell Planning permission for the next phase of regeneration at the awardwinning Pennywell Living development has been submitted to the City of Edinburgh Council.

The application, from regeneration firm Urban Union and architects and town planners Barton Willmore, includes plans for 315 dwellings, landscaping and associated drainage and infrastructure at the site. If successful the dwellings will comprise 175 flats and 140 houses of which 134 will be available for private sale. The plans form phase three of four at the Pennywell development, which is part of the council’s ambitious 21st Century Homes programme and is one of Scotland’s largest housing-led regeneration projects. Urban Union has already delivered 193 homes of which 108 were for social and mid-market rent and 85 properties were offered for private sale. In total over 700 homes will be delivered at the development, with work expected to be completed in 2021. Neil McKay, managing director of Urban Union, said: “The first two phases at Pennywell Living were a great success. Hundreds of people are now enjoying the high quality and energy efficient accommodation. The transformation of Pennywell is already well underway and we look forward to receiving the council’s decision regarding phase three and, if successful, we anticipate work will start in summer 2018.” Jon Parry, Associate Architect at

Barton Willmore said: “Submission of the planning application for this major phase of the area’s regeneration is a significant milestone. Our masterplanners, architects, planners and landscape designers have worked closely with Urban Union, 21st Century Homes and the local community to ensure the proposals meet the needs of the area; we are extremely proud of the positive change that our designs are contributing towards.” The extensive Pennywell development is the result of a major investment of £42 million by the City of Edinburgh Council and includes £7.9 million grant funding from the Scottish Government. It was also recently shortlisted in the Inside Housing Best Regeneration Project (nonLondon) Awards with the results announced in November. Urban Union creates revitalised communities through building new, high quality, affordable homes. It currently has three live developments in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth with plans to add a further two Glasgow locations in 2017. Urban Union – a partnership between Robertson and McTaggart Construction – is keen to ensure projects benefit the local landscape and community so the site features a linear park and a mix of accommodation, with potential for commercial opportunities and retail outlets.

HAB Housing & United Communities given approval for landmark Southmead housing development

Julie Poole

Planning has been approved for the building of 161 homes in Southmead, Bristol. Bristol City Council’s planning department has given the Elderberry Walk scheme the go-ahead after plans were submitted in September last year, with construction likely to start later this year. The development will transform the former Dunmail Primary School site, currently owned by Bristol City Council, into an attractive residential location with green spaces and community areas. The buildings have been carefully designed following consultation with local residents, with an energy efficient and sustainable approach. Elderberry Walk will be strongly rooted in the landscape of Southmead, and sympathetic to the surrounding area of North Bristol. The homes will be set around a central Green Lane featuring a wide promenade, cycle path and children’s play facilities sown across the site.

Constructed in 1926, it has been in constant use ever since. Braintree Town Hall had to become more energy efficient, which was not straightforward due to it being Grade II* Listed. The Town Hall approached Selectaglaze to address thermal issues with the windows. A meeting was arranged with Braintree Town Hall and the local Conservation Officer, where an aluminium sample from Selectaglaze was set up. Those in attendance were impressed at how well the timber grain effect blended in with the wood panelling of the room. Thereafter, Selectaglaze installed 20 vertical sliding units. reduced installation, interfacing into building management systems, maintenanceall beneficial to the lifetime costs of the building,” observes BAM senior project services engineer Gavin Wilcox.

To address the specific needs of the science rooms, Gilberts added dedicated controls logic for the MFS units in those areas; the logic interlocks with the gas supply to ensure the gas will not activate unless the MFS is operational, and automatically supplies additional fresh air whenever a fume cupboard is opened.

Installed through the external façade or window, Mistrale MFS provides both fresh air intake and used air exhaust through one unit; the system mixes internal and external air to ventilate the internal space. A mixing damper within modulates airflow to allow the new, fresh air to mix with the warm exhaust air, thus extracting its heat without the need for an exchanger whilst still maintaining the required levels of air quality within the space. The integrated low energy fan energises to blend the internal air, ensuring an even distribution of airflow, with control over temperature and CO2 levels within, and maintenance of a comfortable internal environment for occupants.

Doncaster’s first and only Sixth Form College will personify fast-track collaboration when it opens its doors in September. The new, £20million, 9450m2

New College Doncaster, which will be run by the New Collaborative Learning Trust, will have been built from start to finish in just 13 months. It features state-of-the-art ventilation solutions from Gilberts Blackpool to create a fresh, conditioned internal environment. The core, standard solution has been tailored to the specific needs of the project in collaboration with BAM Design and BAM Construction, to deliver, in one product, a commercially viable alternative to conventional heating & ventilating strategies.

In total, 62 of Gilberts’ standard MFS256 hybrid ventilation units, each with integrated heat coil, have been installed at the College; 51 of the units have been incorporated into the windows, using Gilberts’ WM (windowmounted) louvre, a registered design that combines a split up/down louvre blade configuration for optimum efficiency of air movement in and out of the classroom. A further 11no. MFS256 units have been integrated into the façade using a bespoke designed duct extension.

In addition, eight MFS-V turrets have been sited on the roof, each positioned within a shaft, to provide natural ventilation to the sports hall and two of the first floor teaching spaces. “Gilberts had the ability, in-house, to design and deliver bespoke options from a standard product, to meet the specific design criteria or limitations at particular projects, based round natural ventilation which is the preferred methodology for educational buildings. Gilberts’ innovative approach gives us the ability to increase flow rates, utilise heat coils within the ventilation unit, so that that we were able to use just a single, discreet unit in most classrooms, and eliminate the need for radiators in the classrooms.

“As each unit is stand-alone, serving an individual classroom, & maintenance is repair simplified. The system also means there are fewer units overall, so

Just two Mistrale MFS128, or one MFS256, units will ventilate a standard 32 person classroom, achieving the 8litres/sec/person fresh air required by current Department of Education Building Bulletin (BB101) and PBSP guidelines. Each unit also achieves relevant acoustic considerations: its operational ‘noise’ is less than 30dbA, and it has been engineered to absorb external noise to keep within the classroom criteria required by BB93. With the heat coil option, the coil is energised and the fan runs on

full speed for approximately 20 minutes (depending on night setback temperatures and flow temperatures) to provide an even heat distribution across the room before occupancy. The integral fan ensures maximum air blending and avoids any stratification. Gilberts’ test research shows that the technique can eliminate the need for wall-mounted radiators. The MFS-V version incorporates two Fusion MFS128 units placed vertically into a rooftop penthouse turret, with a shaft of only 900mm2, or up to 1500mm2 ensuring effective ‘stand-alone’ ventilation of the space below. No additional ducting or plant is required. By routing the ventilation through the roof then internal spaces that have no external façade can still be efficiently ventilated, be it via natural or hybrid principles. Gilberts designed bespoke cowls for New College Doncaster, with a low profile, so they blend discreetly with the roofline whilst still enabling adequate free ventilation area. Gilberts has further taken care to attain compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document L: Mistrale MFS attains air leakage than legislative better requirements- 5m3/HR/m2, and a U value of 1W/m2/°C. As with all Gilberts’ ventilation solutions, it delivers efficient weather performance via its bespoke louvre system. ❚ enquiry 104

“The whole project was about achieving best value for service delivery and the environment,” explained FCB’s Tony Comrie. “The client decided building two new stations would be more costeffective and efficient in the long term than maintaining the ageing stations. The same rationale was applied to the new station designs:

New Blowerproof Liquid set to transform air-tightness of buildings Airtightness is a dominant factor affecting a building’s energy performance. It can be argued that airtightness is more important than insulation in terms of thermal performance. Even small gaps in doors and windows can cause significant heat loss and once a building is constructed, stemming unwanted air flow can prove difficult and expensive. Blowerproof helps deliver energy performance well beyond building regulations. Blowerproof has recently been awarded BBA (British Board of Agrément) Certificate 17/5410. Jack Georgiou, project manager at BBA, says: “Blowerproof was subjected to a rigorous assessment by the BBA. The results of stringent tests were assessed including fatigue testing after accelerated ageing to verify the efficiency and durability of the air-tight seal.

When deciding how to seal construction gaps, one common option is to use a polyurethanebased, spray foam filler or silicone or acrylic sealant to ensure air-tightness, but there are acknowledged problems, with shrinkage and adhesion being the main disadvantages.

Simply brushed on, Blowerproof quickly forms a permanent, secure and continuous air-tight seal across a range of draughtprone points: wall/floor/ceiling connections, fenestrations, pipe connections including water, electricity, gas and data; all with no need for primers.

A new, BBA-certified, liquid airtight membrane called Blowerproof is a clever, quick, easy and cost-effective way to ensure outstanding air-tightness. Blowerproof has been used widely across

Applied as a blue, thick liquid, fibre reinforced ‘paint’, Blowerproof Liquid Brush quickly cures to form a black sealed membrane which is highly resistant to punctures. Blowerproof is also available in white, so it doesn’t show through a plaster finish.

quickly justifies both its product and labour costs. An easy way to ensure leaks are sealed, helping limit applicator error is a major step forward to improving building performance. Blowerproof can’t be beaten for how quickly, easily and effectively an applicator can achieve a permanently secure and continuous seal.

“Blowerproof performed satisfactorily in all aspects of the assessment and tests so we’ve certified it as being an effective way to improve the airtightness and consequently the thermal efficiency of buildings.” BBA certification is recognised by Government departments and throughout the construction industry as confirmation that a product is fit for purpose. Only products and systems that have passed a series of comprehensive assessments – including laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality

management checks and inspection of production are awarded a BBA Certificate. Once a Certificate has been issued, six monthly surveillance of production and comprehensive three yearly reviews are required to maintain its validity. In addition to the BBA, Blowerproof has Certification from a wide range of recognised European bodies, a full list can be found on the Blowerproof website. Blowerproof is also available as a roller application which can be used directly on blockwork, brick, masonry and as a spray which is ideal for larger areas such as walls and roofs. It can be directly applied to mineral wool, sprayed set foams or PIR insulation.

It’s safe to use in high risk environments such as food, childcare and medical environments as it is free from both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and harmful chemicals. On the 1st January 2018, a new regulation affecting “the ecodesign requirements for local space heaters” will be implemented. This derives from an EU Commission Regulation which was transposed into UK Law under the Energy Related Products Regulations (ERP) and is often referred to as ‘LOT 20’. Any new local space heating system installed from this date onwards must be compliant these new performance standards. The aim of LOT 20 is to reduce our energy consumption through accurate management, modernise  electric heating appliances and minimise wasted energy. Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems used at the new Deans Trust Academy Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, with their approved fabricator CB Solutions worked on building the new Deans Trust Academy at Ardwick in Manchester. Designed by Atkins this was Manchester’s fastest ever built school, constructed and built within 38 weeks, 50% faster than traditional construction methods. Using the Select Schools programme, a Design for Manufacture & Assembly (DfMA) solution was created by Laing O’Rourke using modular units created offsite, this drastically reduced construction time and minimised waste in a heavily constrained brownfield site. This Fast track construction method was paramount as the academy needed to provide 1,200 new secondary places for Manchester City Council’s regeneration project, helping them meet their 16,000 student places target. The Comar 5P.i window system was specified as it features trademarked Polyamide Insulated (P.i) that provides exceptional thermal performance in a market where energy efficient designs and meeting the demands of the latest

building regulations are paramount. All configurations, such as casement, top swing reversible, pivot, tilt and turn and sliding can be manufactured. These windows offer outstanding weather performance and reduce heat loss through the trademark P.i thermal break ensuring low Uvalues so energy bills are minimised. Comar 5P.i ECO is a casement window system which includes a 55mm and 75mm option. In an extremely busy education environment, Comar 7P.i Commercial Door sets were the natural choice as they are one of the most comprehensive on the market today. Not only are they available in swing, pivot, sliding, auto-sliding and sliding folding, they have been designed specifically for applications where high traffic solutions are required. Polyamide Insulated (P.i) door systems also provide exceptional thermal performance in a market where energy efficient designs and meeting the demands of the latest building regulations are paramount. The Comar 7P.i CD door system can be hung directly into the Comar 9P.i thermally insulated framing. ❚ enquiry 144 September 2017

Levolux delivers top class solution The award-winning, £42 million Vijay Patel Building at De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester, combines several structural elements, each distinguished by a contrasting, yet highly effective external solar shading and screening solution, courtesy of Levolux. The development, named after Dr Vijay Patel, a graduate of DMU’s Leicester School of Pharmacy and now a very successful businessman, comprises the Arts Tower, Design Wing, the Food Village and the Pod.

The Vijay Patel building, designed by CPMG architects, becomes home to the DMU’s faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities, offering sector-leading facilities to students. Levolux has an impressive track record working on projects at the DMU campus. This continues with the delivery of a custom solar shading and screening solution for the Vijay Patel Building.

The eleven-storey Arts Tower is the only surviving element from the original Fletcher complex, which was built in the early 1960’s.

The solution includes a diverse range of products, including curved Aerofoil Fins, faux terracotta Fins, PV integrated Glass Fins and plant screening louvres. These have been applied differently on the building’s three structures.

Following a comprehensive refurbishment, the façade of the tower has been transformed with the addition of laminated Glass Fins, incorporating building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technology. ❚ enquiry 143

Consort converts hospitality budget into charitable change Consort Ltd is making a positive difference to the lives of disadvantaged people in and around its home town of Nottingham by reassigning money previously budgeted for corporate hospitality. The fabricator, which has long manufactured PVC-U window systems from the UK’s leading supplier VEKA Group has supported charities such as Emmanuel House – a centre for homeless people – and Fists up for Frankie; a campaign that funds treatment for neuroblastoma (an aggressive form of childhood cancer). Jeff Dunn, Sales and Marketing Director for Consort explained: “Changes in the law introduced in 2010 left many companies questioning what forms of expenditure would subsequently be considered ‘corporate hospitality’ and what would be seen as ‘bribery’. We chose to avoid any such confusion and instead donate our hospitality budget back into the community that has contributed so much to our success since the company was established in 1950.”

Every year, Consort allocates a sizeable donation to worthy causes. This money would previously have been earmarked for corporate gifts and entertainment. Jeff continues: “Besides helping to support the most vulnerable and marginalised citizens in and around Nottingham, we are also raising the profile of organisations that rely purely on fundraising and donations to continue their work. Emmanuel House for example, is a recognised cause in the area with a visible presence through its charity shop, but nevertheless receives no statutory funding. Conversely, some of the charities we support do not have the profile that Emmanuel House enjoys, making fundraising even more of a challenge.

so in this case, it has been used to support people in Derbyshire to cope and recover after being victims of crime. “We have a loyal customer base who rely on Consort for quick and efficient service and industry leading systems from VEKA Group. Every Christmas, we send each of them a letter, thanking them for their continuing support and updating them on the charity donations we have made that year. We like to think that this gives them a ‘share’ in doing something worthwhile for the community, and we’ve received no complaints for redirecting our budget in this way. Many customers have actually done something similar. ❚ enquiry 146

“As part of this year’s budget, we have donated £600 to Remedi; a charity that provides restorative services for people affected by conflict in various settings, throughout the midlands and the north. We always ensure though, that our donations make a positive difference for people in our area,

Increasingly popular glass balustrade posts & spigots Steel windows create connected space for Victorian house extension Two large sets of steel windows and doors have created a feeling of space in a kitchen extension to a late 19th-century Victorian terrace house in a Conservation Area close to Tufnell Park in North London. The screens, from Steel Window Association member, Steel Window Service and Supplies, also allowed the new work to blend with the existing interior design and the many original features of the house while ensuring a high level of security. Replacing an unremarkable existing rear garden extension, the new single-storey brick built extension has significantly improved the external appearance of the three-storey, five bedroom semi-detached house. It has also contributed to the improved internal spatial arrangement and flow of the ground floor, making it

the heart of family living, dining and entertaining. Steel Window Services and Supplies created full working drawings before being commissioned to manufacture the near identical screens, each measuring over 4m wide by some 2.4m high. Both screens have a set of full-height double doors that open out. They are finished with a factoryapplied polyester power coating in RAL 7016 matt anthracite, a colour that matches with the kitchen units, sits well with the external brickwork and contrasts with the white internal walls.

Barrier Components selection of stainless steel posts and spigots are proving to be increasingly popular, triggered by the current growth in sales of glass balustrade systems. Available to buy on their website directly or by phone via their technical sales team, they have a range of pre-assembled posts, tilt-loc spigots and stand-off adapters suitable for a wide range of applications.

The pre-assembled post system consists of Posts with glass clamps pre-attached allowing for rapid installation. Posts are available 42.4mm or 48.3mm in diameter and handrails are also sold to match. All posts come with pan head fixings on the top and are designed for an easy installation with maximum flexibility to meet many design requirements. The new Tilt-Loc Spigots, designed to hold the glass, offer a revolutionary adjustment that allows accurate glass alignment for the balustrade making

installation simple. Made from Duplex 2205 ultra marine stainless steel mean that they are suitable and longer lasting for coastal and other harsh environments. These spigots have been extensively tested to achieve a 1.5kN rating on specific glass sizes whilst also accommodating numerous glass sizes at both 0.36kN and 0.74kN. They are available for Base, Side and Edge designs. For glass balustrade applications

requiring no visible fixings from one side, Glass Stand-Off Adapters are a perfect solution. With the sheer strength of over 23kN and the ultimate flexibility of glass thicknesses between 8mm and 25.52mm, all designs can be catered for. There are three options in the range 30mm, 40mm and 50mm and all made from 316 grade stainless steel. ❚ enquiry 147

The Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is available in a range of finishes (19 colours and woodgrains from VEKA’s Variations colour collection) across all installation options. Aluminium covers can be specified in those finishes too, further increasing the system’s versatility as part of a broader design scheme. The same flexibility applies to hardware, with products from all major manufacturers catered for.

Dawn Stockell, VEKA Group’s Marketing Director comments: “The Imagine Suite remains one of the industry’s most significant developments in terms of doors, with each new addition embracing its ethos of quality, capability and style. The Lift & Slide Patio Door is no exception, offering luxurious expanses of glass while providing ‘best in class’ levels of insulation depending

“We wanted the Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door to be elegantly stylish from any angle; inside or out”, Dawn continues. “Visible surfaces have been kept to a minimum even in floor-to-ceiling installations; maximising the natural light let in, and creating a sumptuous sense of space. Sliding sashes close flush to the frame, and drainage has been fully concealed within the sash.”

“The Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door met with a fantastic reception at its FIT Show launch”, Dawn adds. “What our technicians have achieved with its multi-chamber profile, Neopor inserts and thermally broken threshold has addressed the industry’s expectations for energy efficiency using doors of this type. Sustainable Surfaces and So Much More Leading innovator in cork, Granorte, is continuing to demonstrate the versatility of cork as a sustainable interior surface with a series of highprofile projects that use the material in novel ways. With ceiling panels at the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch, wall and ceiling tiles at Fleet Street’s Humble Grape, striking 3D geometric wall tiles and sinks at a leading restaurant chain and flooring at countless other locations; Granorte is headlining the cork revolution. Paulo Rocha, R&D, Granorte: “As a natural source that’s also sustainable in the long-term, there are few materials that can match the adaptability of cork. Here at Granorte, we’ve been

championing its suitability for a huge range of interior applications for a long while. “We are seeing a growing number of designers and specifiers consider cork as a serious choice within hospitality, retail and commercial premises. It is a sustainable material that offers real-world performance and we expect cork to play an increasing role in commercial projects of all scales.” Absorbing sound, insulating against heat loss, comfortable and warm to the touch, cork is a wonderful surface material. As the bark of trees with a lifespan of more than 200 years, it is also sustainable and low-impact; a true wonder surface that can also be turned into fabrics and impressive 3D structures.

These almost sculptural objects are crafted at Granorte’s Portuguese manufacturing plant using a stateof-the-art robotic cutting arm that operates on seven-axis. Of course, cork is fantastically adaptable too and the company also produces a range of contract-rated upholstery fabrics made from cork. Aesthetically, few natural materials possess the flexibility of cork and Granorte products come in a huge array of striking looks. From classic agglomerated cork to striated over-dyed looks, digital printed designs and ‘raw’ bark panels, the scope is huge. Cork is a true wonder material and Granorte leads the way in finding novel applications for this natural and sustainable resource. ❚ enquiry 151

Icynene awarded energy saving trust approval Spray foam insulation specialists, Icynene has achieved the prestigious Energy Saving Trust [EST] approval for its high performance, Icynene Foamlite system. Icynene Foamlite is a spray applied insulation system specifically developed for use in wall, roof and underfloor applications where high levels of insulation and air tightness are required. When applied, Icynene Foamlite expands 100-fold within the first few seconds, sealing all gaps, service holes and hard to reach spaces completely eliminating cold bridging.

Icynene Foamlite can be applied directly to breathable and nonbreathable roof membranes without the need for an air gap. Because the foam has a soft, opencell structure it allows the free passage of moisture vapour, allowing buildings to breathe naturally. It also means that roof timbers in contact with the foam will not “sweat” and promote mould growth.

According to Icynene UK Managing Director, Paddy Leighton, “Winning EST approval is a robust process and a huge achievement for Icynene and we are delighted to have our products recognised for their high performance” The Energy Saving Trust is an independent and impartial organisation which promotes energy efficiency across the domestic housing sector, helping consumers save energy in their homes. EST also provides advice, research and consultancy services to help consumers, businesses, governments and communities achieve sustainable use of energy. Icynene provides a 25-year warranty for all its insulation products and as well as carrying EST Approval, Foamlite is also BBA Certified. Skating in the quiet Some of the noisiest buildings are sports facilities such as ice rinks, halls and swimming pools where hard surfaces and large spaces exacerbate echoes and chatter. Architects Christensen & Co which designed a new and very inviting ice skating rink in Ørestad, a fast-developing suburb of Copenhagen, used a popular and very effective solution to the problem. To reduce sound reverberation, Troldtekt natural wood wool acoustic panels were

installed to provide a calm and uniform surface, together with integrated lighting. The ceilings in the heated part of the ice rink provide a natural surface with a warm glow, contrasting between the cold crystalline rink and the warm club facilities. Designed as a venue for sport and fun, the architects carefully thought out their choice of materials and finishes, such as concrete, wood and glass and acoustic panels. The

City of Copenhagen also invested additional funds to ensure the project was eco-friendly both in its construction and daily operation. Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability as documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at silver level.

They are specified to improve acoustics in many different projects such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial, private and public buildings. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour.

Terrazzo floor installation blends heritage with modernity - helps create stunning interior at offices in the heart of the City of London According to the National Federation of Terrazzo, Marble and Mosaic Specialists, the popularity and specification of terrazzo as colourful and high performance flooring is growing. Spokesman Brian James comments, ‘A good example is the new terrazzo floor laid in the reception and lift lobby areas of the Grade II listed 1 King William Street development in London which provides an impressive welcome for visitors. “Our design intent was to use terrazzo for its robust and hard-wearing performance but also because it is visually interesting material,” explained Ben Leach of architects AAMM. “The grey white tone chip of the terrazzo with flecks of Thassos and Giallo Siena suitably reflects the palette of materials and colours used throughout.” NFTMMS member In Opera Group, specialists in stone and porcelain interior and exterior finishes, was selected to supply the terrazzo for the floor, the Calacatta marble for the columns and the granite for the roof top floor. “This was a significant project for us and we worked closely with AHMM on refining the design in terms of optimising sizes, thickness and specification as well as providing samples throughout the process for design and quality purposes,” said In Opera Group Sales and Marketing Director Enzo Favro. Working with an existing building with varying

build-ups it was critical that different thicknesses could be used for the different applications as needed. This required continual review of sizes as site conditions were uncovered during construction. In addition, the requirement of a luxurious inlay in the reception area of two-tone triangular tiles tested skills in design, fabrication and installation. The installation itself was completed by another NFTMMS member TRI Contracting. “We won the business as a result of assisting the architects in specification, samples and advice and competing in the tender costs,” explained TRI’s Brian Connor. “We supplied and installed factory finish terrazzo tiles to all lift lobbies over seven floors and the bespoke terrazzo pattern tile to main reception.” The NFTMMS represents companies who wish to maintain and improve the standards of craftsmanship and technical control on which the industry depends. It includes companies involved in terrazzo, mosaic, marble, granite, limestone and quartz and NFTMMS members freely offer technical advice and assistance with specifications. Superquilt multi-layer foil earns Agrement approval The effectiveness of SuperQuilt, part of the YBS range, as a single layer insulation solution for use beneath pitched roof rafters, in either new-build or refurbishment situations has been underlined by the award of a coveted BBA Certificate. Agrement Certificate 17/5388 explains in detail how the already widely specified, multi-layer foil insulation can be used to retain energy within attic or habitable loft spaces: cutting fuel bills, improving comfort levels for building occupants and adding value. Importantly it can be employed to address detail areas such as the cheeks of dormers, dwarf walls, bonnet hips and other features.

The Certification comes after prolonged evaluation by the British Board of Agrement and covers such considerations as related Building Regulation matters. design criteria, ventilation and installation guidance, as well as regular review by the highly respect authority. Crucially, the Agrement Certificate confirms that under normal conditions the durability of the SuperQuilt will be equivalent to that of the roof it is installed within and will contribute to controlling condensation in the roof space, while offering very good thermal performance. The emissivity of 0.03 for the outer foil is complemented by a declared core thermal resistance of 1.35 m2KW. The Certificate further states that the BBA believes SuperQuilt can satisfy the

requirements of not only the Building Regulations 2010 (England and Wales), but also the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012, The Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004: making it “fit for purpose” nationwide. SuperQuilt is also used routinely by contractors and developers in the construction of exterior walls, where it is able to offer significant space savings thanks to its minimal 40mm thickness. YBS offers a full specification and technical design service, while further details on both SuperQuilt and other products in the range – as well as t heir diverse applications – can be found on the manufacturer’s website at ❚ enquiry 158

Iso-Bloc one has rapid window construction sealing covered IMPROVED sealing of windows is provided by ISO-BLOCO ONE foam tape available from leading supplier ISO-CHEMIE. The multi-purpose foam tape enables installers to quickly and easily seal windows from inside the building during construction, avoiding the need to use time consuming and costly external access systems like scaffolding and ladders. This can provide cost savings of up to 70% when compared to traditional three component systems - hiring access systems, with the associated health and safety issues, can add significantly to the overall cost of a new build or renovation project. Moreover, because the foam sealant can be used in the wet and rain the installation of windows can be undertaken regardless of external weather conditions, avoiding time consuming and costly delays. This can add-up to potential savings of hundreds of pounds

per day, ISO CHEMIE estimates. Self-adhesive ISO BLOCO ONE provides a high-performance seal for window and door joints up to 30mm wide and is impermeable to driving rain at a minimum of 1,000 Pa - 66% higher reliability than most conventional joint sealing tapes. The internal air tight seal has been tested at 1000 Pa pressure difference (20 times more than UK Building Regulations.) and found to give less than 0.1 m³ of air loss. At the same time, depending on tape width, it will also supply a UValue of 0.55 and reduce sound by 63 dB, straight from the box. Once installed, the tape ensures structures are better protected from elemental factors like wind, dust and moisture ingress by accommodating the changes in structural movement caused by environmental, cyclical and settlement factors. Product

complies with energy saving regulations (EnEV) on windows and doors as well as the RAL quality assurance association and can accommodate extremes of temperature changes, from -30°C to + 80°C.

“We are very pleased to recognize these companies for their achievements and commitment to safety and sustainability excellence,” said Davide Vassallo, managing director, DuPont Sustainable Solutions. “Like DuPont, they believe that progress in these areas allows companies to not only become better corporate citizens, but more competitive and effective.” Jury President Mieke Jacobs, leading author and executive leadership coach, said that jury members were particularly BLOCO ONE offers a single product ‘fit and forget' solution for fast and effective sealing based around the European RAL principles of three level sealing the inside seal area is more airtight than the external one, allowing any trapped moisture inside the joint, or within the wall, to escape outwards rather than into the building. The external seal area provides weather resistance and breathability, while the intermediate seal area provides extra thermal and acoustic properties and the internal one air tightness and humidity regulation. PLEASE USE BLOCK CAPITALS • COMPLETE ALL SECTIONS A press event was called on the 1st of September and journalists from some of the largest UK and international magazines were asked to attend a morning briefing followed by an afternoon of “eventing” at the world renowned Burghley Horse Trials. The morning briefing highlighted the true scope of the fischer group and its global operation. Not just purely focused on the fixings manufacturing but also with their Automotive, Consulting and Educational toy sectors of the business In 2017 fischer fixings have developed and launched 2 innovative new products, the Ultracut Concrete Screw and the fischer Duopower. There was an evident focus on these two products during the morning presentations, with a presentation from the Head of Technical in the UK (Mirka Valovicova) highlighting the design and technical power of the two for-mentioned products. The Ultracut offering unrivalled load resistance and unique cutting teeth to make installation for the user as easy and as safe as possible and the DuoPowers intelligent activation principle. The way the DuoPower is described as “intelligent” really does reflect the functions of this plug. fischer have revolutionised the simple “wall plug” by combining two component materials that when activated will fold, knot or expand. This system allows the plug to be used in almost any substrate safely. The benefits for the user being you don’t need to know what you’re fixing into! The DuoPower will always work. Justin White, MD of fischer UK also spoke about fischer UK specifically and about the journey the business has been on in the past 4 years. Having set double digit growth as a standard during his time as managing director he is expecting to beat his own target in 2017 with great sales this year. This has been boosted by recent product launches and an expansion of the external sales and internal support teams. The target now for fischer UK definitely seems to be

expansion, not only in its product ranges but from the inside of the business. Plans to increase revenues by 100% since 2012 have been set out, but such aspirations will need a strong and developed internal infrastructure. fischer UK have recognised this and have already invested heavily on the internal functions of the business, they believe propelling them deep into the use of “future technologies” and ahead of the curve. During the day Justin White spoke passionately about the new state of the art phone systems and customer contact tools that have recently been invested in for fischer UK. It seems every step fischer UK takes aims to bring them closer to the customer and to reduce the “effort” involved in everyday business.

The afternoon involved a trip to the prestigious Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. As fischer sponsor the 3 time Olympic Gold Medallist, Michael Jung, it was a fitting end to an excellent day. Michael Jung gave us the opportunity to walk the Cross Country course with him whilst being open to questions about his personal life, history of eventing and of course the trials themselves. Walking round the course was truly eye-opening, the skill and expertise needed to navigate the course was immense, especially with some fences being over 2m and dropping directly into water. Michael Jung imposed a professional but welcoming image, much the same as fischer fixings UK showed us during the day. Definitely a fitting ambassador for the brand. The day proved to be a success as fischer tried to impart their brand ethos and direction of the company in a knowledgeable but entertaining way. The plans for the company seem huge but this definitely is followed up with the passion and drive to succeed clearly shown to us during the whole day. We are looking forward to big things from fischer in 2017 and in the future.

Increased demand for renewable building product Demand for Plaswood is on the increase as specifiers, architects, landscape designers, construction companies and many more realise the benefits of the sustainable, eco-friendly substitute for non-renewable materials such as wood, concrete and steel. Plaswood is strong, durable, waterproof, maintenance free, versatile and 100% recyclable - it sounds almost too good to be true. Made in the UK from 100% recycled plastic, the product supports the circular economy and is not a wood composite like many other plastic wood products on the market. Plaswood’s roots date back to the 1980’s. Today it is manufactured by RPC bpi recycled products, Europe’s largest recycler of waste plastic, at its dedicated factory in Dumfries, Scotland. The company boasts an annual recycling capacity in excess of 100,000 tonnes of waste, mainly from the agricultural sector’s waste farm bale plastic. Today Plaswood is a leading brand producing Plaswood lumber, construction materials and street furniture - providing structural and practical solutions and products for wetlands, waterways, parks, gardens, towns, city centres, leisure centres, schools and playgrounds. In fact, anywhere where environments are exposed to water and/or the elements.

businesses with the successful construction of boardwalks and coastal paths. Plaswood’s long life qualities are the key ingredient for the success of many constructions because it doesn’t wear, rust or degrade with age but adds real value over the life of the product. It has a clear edge over wooden structures particularly in relation to marine applications simply because it will not rot and requires no annual maintenance.” Although robust, Plaswood is flexible in the sense it can be formed into virtually any shape and is versatile as it can be used alongside steel and concrete too. Its strength comes from its construction from technically superior waste agricultural plastics. The high-performance product is nonabsorbing and weatherproof, which makes it more sustainable and cost-effective than traditional building materials. Its eco-friendly credentials are enhanced as it doesn’t require painting or preservation once fitted, and after usage it can be fully recycled for further environmental consideration. Plaswood is truly a closed loop product for the 21st century. ❚ enquiry 161

The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is the largest single bed hospital in the country, with 646 beds, including a 40 bed critical care unit, 18 operating theatres and one of the largest emergency departments in the North West. With an abundance of expensive equipment and machinery, it was of paramount importance to main contractor, Carillion, that the drainage throughout the hospital could be trusted.

Initially, an order of Polypipe Terrain PVC was placed to provide secondary stack ventilation throughout the hospital. After this successful installation, Polypipe Terrain FUZE HDPE was selected as a modern alternative to the cast iron system already specified, providing expert drainage throughout. With patients in theatre and A&E highly vulnerable, was paramount that the drainage system could be installed and trusted not to

This was an important consideration for The Royal Liverpool University Hospital as any leaks could result in the damage of life saving, and incredibly expensive machinery.

Providing longevity and leak free solutions was the key consideration for both Carillion and the hospital, the sustainability of the project was also of great importance.

Polypipe Terrain also worked with Carillion in providing an alternative to the system and dilution traps which had already been specified in the Science and Research Building. Our company has come to appreciate the benefits of using Marmox Multiboard over a number of past contracts. Here on the Queenshurst building, which is high specification residential, we are fitting the vanity units as well as bath panels and the Multiboard has been brilliant. They are being fitted over 18mm hardwood ply, secured to two-by-two (50 x 50mm) timber framework, ready for tiling by another subcontractor. The boards are being supplied through CCS, along with the special Marmox washers which make for a very secure fixing.” Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. They are both light to handle and easy to cut,

while still being able to sustain substantial loadings if required. They further offer good thermal insulation performance, helping to cut condensation risk. Elsewhere the boards have featured in other domestic, commercial and educational projects across the country. They were even used to replace badly deteriorated ceiling panels high above a public swimming pool in Peterborough where ease of installation and resistance to moist aggressive conditions were paramount. The apartments in Phase 3 to Queenshurst are due to be released for open market sale this autumn, with many of the properties already reserved. When it comes to showering, Saniflo shower cubicles offer a great alternative to shower enclosures that require tiles and grouting. More industry professionals are switching on to the numerous benefits of shower cubicles, recognising for one, that shower cubicles with glass panels and doors offer a great environmentally-friendly bathroom solution. In most cases it’s possible to have a new Saniflo shower cubicle up and running in less than a day and many shower cubicles fit into the exact space where an old bath was. Shower cubicles are easy and swift to fit. The glass panels and doors simply slot into the frame, completely eliminating the need to remove and/or replace old tiles and grout. Not only do shower cubicles offer a more environmentally-friendly solution, but fitting a shower cubicle also saves time, money, hassle and waste. Another massive bonus is that, unlike tiles and grout, shower cubicles are leak-free and require minimal maintenance long-term. And for the end user, a shower cubicle is much easier to look after than tiles and grout, especially Saniflo shower cubicles that feature Cristal Plus coating for a longlasting clean sheen. In addition, shower cubicles are packaged in recyclable cardboard and on wood pallets from sustainable sources, making the whole cycle as sustainable as possible. So next time you’re deciding on options for a new bathroom, think about glass wall panels, glass splashbacks and shower cubicles with glass panels and doors and you’ll be on your way to reducing what you have to send to landfill. ❚ enquiry 169

Making More from Cork Sustainable and fast-growing, cork is in renaissance and as a material it is incredibly versatile, capable of being turned into everything from fabric to wallcovering, flooring, furniture and even sinks and baths. It is this versatility that is being wholeheartedly embraced by Granorte, with an extraordinary collection of cork products. Whether fabric suitable for contract use in Tesseghuro, lights, seats, stools and coffee tables, sinks and baths from the NuSpa collection, or striking highlytextured wall panels; Granorte is pioneering innovation in cork. Using the latest engineering, including a complex seven-axis robotic cutting arm to cut intricate

3D shapes, Granorte is expert at discovering new applications for cork. Harnessing waste material from the cork stopper industry by processing it into blocks of agglomerated cork that can be turned into all sorts of products, the Portuguese manufacturer has won awards for its innovative products. As a natural material, cork is not only sustainable, but comes with practical advantages too. Absorbing sound, insulating against heat loss, comfortable and soft to the touch, it really is a wonder material. Yet, one of the most appealing aspects of cork is the beautiful and unusual natural aesthetic it can provide. It’s a look that’s being

appreciated in commercial and residential premises alike. “Cork has always been a wonderfully versatile material, but we previously lacked the technology and understanding to realise this versatility to its full potential,” believes Paulo Rocha, R&D, Granorte. “It is only now, with investment in the right machinery and a better understanding of its capability, that we are able to find new applications for this marvel of nature. ❚ enquiry 175
