04 FOCUS ON : DESIGN & INTERIORS : CLEMENT WINDOWS

Clement Windows’ W40 steel window range was chosen as the perfect match to the original metal fenestration, a striking feature of this converted warehouse building in North West London.

Clement replace hundreds of industrial style steel windows at the newly restored Maple Building in popular Kentish Town. As well as offering stunning good looks and strong acoustic performance, the Clement W40 range perfectly enhances the cosy, well-lit interior spaces of the building whilst at the same time allowing impressive views of London’s skyline. Gemma Gordon-Duff, Managing Director of interior architects, Gordon-Duff & Linton, who designed the beautifully crafted apartments, said: “The Maple Building is our flagship development. It has bags of industrial charm and period character due to its many original features. The steel

windows by Clement respect and enhance these while simultaneously complementing the high specification, modern interior design of the project.” Dating back to the 1890s, the Maple Building has an interesting history. Originally home to Maple & Co, furniture makers for the Royal Family, during the First World War sections of the factory were secretly modified to produce fighter plane components, canvas tents and other supplies for front line troops. More recently, the building was used for office space until

developers The Linton Group acquired it and transformed its five floors into the 50 luxury apartments and seven penthouse suites on offer today. Enquiry No.201 www.mclink.co.uk/994-201

The latest Vicaima finish, "High Gloss", is now available as an option across many of their popular veneered and painted door, frame and wall panel products, allowing specifiers to achieve a premium finish for interior decoration without the burden of premium cost. Luxurious appeal is a term that best describes the new Vicaima High Gloss finish. Enhancing the natural beauty of real wood veneer or taking lacquered paint finishes to new levels of quality, are the hallmarks of this latest innovation from the Vicaima brand. Once the preserve of a select few, this new high gloss finish enables a touch of refinement to be attainable for many more applications, and all with the superior quality you would expect from a Vicaima product. The new High Gloss finish can be applied to the wide range of Vicaima product components, including door and frame solutions, wardrobes and wall panels, creating sophisticated elements that connect with each other to fashion environments with character and personality.

Add shine to CROWN PAINTS your wood celebrates colour with with Osmo the new trends for Spring/Summer 2017 With homeowners looking to add a bit of shine to wooden floors and furniture this autumn, Osmo UK, the eco-friendly wood and finishes expert, has introduced Polyx®-Oil Clear Glossy which provides a gloss finish and adds a touch of class to any room. High gloss has proven to be a very popular finish and it is likely that this will continue. Osmo recognised this trend and has expanded its renowned Polyx®-Oil range to include the glossy option. The finish defines the grain of the wood and accentuates its natural colour. It is the ideal finish to use on all wooden floors, solid or plank wood, strip parquet, OSB or cork flooring, and wooden furniture. Polyx®-Oil Glossy is extremely easy to apply. Simply brush on to the wood surface to achieve deep, longlasting penetration. After treatment the wood is strengthened from within and retains its elasticity. It becomes water repellent, stain resistant and hard-wearing, because it meets the wood’s natural demands and does not crack, flake, peel or blister. Available direct or from approved stockists nationwide, Polyx®-Oil meets all relevant environmental and performance standards. Architects and designers looking to get up to speed with inspired, eye-catching colour schemes for their projects will find help at hand with Crown Paints’ latest trends. Colour Influences 2017 is Crown Paints’ way of celebrating its love of colour - and the programme gives specification professionals useful insight into the shades which will shape professional interior and exterior environments in spring and summer this year. The Influences are produced by an expert panel, assembled by Crown, who join forces to pinpoint the latest colour trends. The team has used its knowledge and passion for colour to produce three stunning palettes, ‘Stillness,’ ‘Fusion’ and ‘Free Spirit.’ The colours are available in Crown Paints’ high quality, professional brands, Crown Trade, Sadolin and Sandtex Trade, which are all crafted with over 200 years of knowledge and experience. Crown Colour Specialist, Kathryn Lloyd, is a member of the Colour Influences panel and has worked to ensure the palettes work in both private and public spaces. Kathryn said: “Colour Influences bring together the latest trends and forecasts to give a fresh and creative perspective to colour. “Each year they continue to be well-received by specifiers looking for inspiration and insight.” “Stillness” is the first palette in the collection. Developed to induce a relaxed mood it features soothing shades of yellow fading into architectural greys, with the subtlety of water colours.

Enquiry No.403 www.mclink.co.uk/994-403

The second palette, “Fusion” showcases rich, vibrant hues in a complex, ornamented design. Inspiration for this trend comes from marrying traditional ethnic design with bold

colour, with multi-layering for a contemporary look using a patchwork of stencils and vivid shades. The third and final palette “Free Spirit” is a fun trend evoking a faded 80s Miami glamour. Combining coral and aqua tones it includes the use of quirky shapes to punctuate walls. The Influences programme is one of a series of initiatives from Crown developed to support specifiers with colour. Accessed through Crown Paints’ Specification Services, other services include bespoke colour scheming and a library of sector focussed colour books for environments including healthcare, housing and education. Exterior and interior schemes can also be completed using computer aided design - and for certain projects the Colour Services Team can provide face-to-face consultation. Furthermore, Crown Paints offers two CPDs on the subject. The first, ‘The Role Of Colour In Buildings’ covers colour psychology and the role it plays in creating atmosphere, effective lighting and the role colour plays in perceptions of room dimensions. This CPD also offers advice on how to create and specify colour schemes and comply with the Equality Act with the use of Crown Paints SCAN® colour coding system. The second CPD, entitled ‘Colour In Education’ explains how colour can be used to best effect within an educational environment. It addresses topics similar to the first CPD, but explores them in the context of educational sector. An area dedicated to colour can be found on the Crown Paints Specification Services website at www.crownpaintspec.co.uk/ColourServices More details are also available by calling the Crown Paints Specification Team on 0330 0240310 or by emailing info@crownpaintspec.co.uk Enquiry No.206 www.mclink.co.uk/994-206

10 FOCUS ON: FLOORS, WALLS & CEILINGS: GERFLOR

Maple is back! Connor sports flooring systems available now! In 2015 International flooring specialist Gerflor announced their acquisition of Connor Sport Court International in a move that subsequently expanded the company’s global market reach and sports product range portfolio.

Founded in 1872, Connor Sports is the leader in hardwood sports flooring and in 1974 Sport Court was formed, providing the market with the original modular sport surface used for outdoor athletics. With 250 employees Connor Sports® flooring and Sport Court® are registered trademarks of Connor and have two manufacturing sites in the USA. The company has sales in more than seventy-five countries and installations on all seven continents. With a large global reach and presence, it’s no wonder that Connor Sports products feature heavily in the Olympic story. The 2016 Rio Olympic Committee sought to buy eight courts for basketball and wheel chair basketball arenas. They would specify a total of 75,000m2 of flooring that would need to undergo the rigours of top-flight performance. The criteria stipulated that it had to be an FIBA level 1 floor, be removable for reuse after the games, and provide outstanding on-site support. They selected Connor Sports QuickLock floors. Roberto Siviero General Manager, Sport Competition said at the time, “We used Connor Sports courts for Basketball/ Wheelchair Basketball at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games for competition, warm-up and practice venues. We received very positive feed-back from the players, coaches and officials on the court’s look, feel and play characteristics”. He went on to add, “The Connor team were great to work with, the communications were always timely and our messages responded to right away. The personnel sent down to support the event were technically knowledgeable, professional and friendly.” He concluded by saying, The Connor basketball courts will remain in Brazil as a legacy of hosting the Olympics”. Bertrand Chaumet, Managing Director, Gerflor UK commented, “Being involved with the Summer Olympic Games in Rio last year was again a testament

to the quality of our overall sports flooring offer and the on-going development we do as company to produce the very best products we can”. Connor Sport Court International is the US market leader in sports surfacing and has built systems for many elite associations including the NBA, NCAA, FIBA, USTA, FIVB, US Youth Futsal, and USA Volleyball. The group specialises in wood, synthetic, rubber and modular sports surfaces and has the appropriate solution for every type of athletic, park, school, arena or multi-use facility. The company is the only sports surfacing firm in North America whose manufacturing facilities are independently audited and verified as “zero waste” and fully ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. They are also the only sports flooring company in the US to have Environmental Product Declarations on all their products. Their athletic surfacing experts have developed more DIN certified systems than any other sports surfacing manufacturer, delivering a complete line-up of products which are perfect for gymnasiums and athletic facilities of all types in the education, leisure, fitness sectors, as well as Military facilities and Sporting Arenas and Dance floor studios. The UK will be introducing four systems from the Connor Sports family providing a host of high quality sports flooring solutions for a myriad of markets. Available now are the following: NeoShok, Rezill Sleeper and Alliance, with stock levels held in France. The fourth available product is the QuickLock portable system, also held in France, it is ideal for temporary use in a multitude of sporting events. All the above systems can be finished in 3 different grades of 57mm x 20mm North American Hard Maple strip.

FOCUS ON: FLOORS, WALLS & CEILINGS: ALTRO 11 selected a pale ice blue, which perfectly matches the colour scheme of the corridor. “Cleaning is proving to be a revelation. The black scuffs and wheel marks from the trolleys were always tough to remove on the old flooring. Initially our cleaning team was doubtful they could get the marks off the new flooring, and nervous of using the scrubber and buffer because they thought they might do some damage. “But we are delighted to report that the flooring comes up like new after every nightly cleaning regime, and even the stubborn black wheel marks are gone. Scrubbing machines and buffers are doing a wonderful job, with no damage.

Tough time-saving solution at Warrington Hospital New Altro CantataTM, the company’s first adhesive-free flooring for areas with a low slip risk, is already demonstrating its capabilities at Warrington Hospital, providing a tough time and cost saving solution in a busy non-clinical corridor. Lee Bushell, the hospital’s Acting Head of Capital Projects, says: “The service corridor is an area that gets an enormous amount of traffic. It’s in constant use during the day.

day, and at the end of its life removed easily, allowing it to be reused or recycled. It can handle the traffic of busy areas and is a long-term solution that will look good for years to come.

“After many years of this treatment, the existing vinyl flooring was really showing the strain. It looked tired, scruffy and we needed to find a hard wearing, affordable long term solution that could be laid with minimal disruption in this busy area.

It is ideal for busy public spaces where disruption needs to be minimal, such as hospitals, schools and general circulation areas, with the durability needed for medium to high traffic areas. Plus there are no associated adhesive odours. Altro Cantata’s 16 softlook shades, which range from subtle naturals to beautifully vivid, allows you to create just the right colour scheme or tone.

“We have a very good relationship with Altro, and their flooring is proving very successful elsewhere in the hospital, so we asked them to have a look at the corridor and give us some guidance. “They suggested we use their new Altro Cantata flooring, because it could be laid straight down onto the existing flooring, without adhesive, which would mean a fast installation. New Altro Cantata is a decorative, adhesive-free flooring that creates maximum impact with minimum downtime. Using Altro’s award-winning adhesive-free installation method, it can be welded and walked on the same

Lee Bushell continues: “I must admit I was sceptical that Altro Cantata would be able to meet our needs, but I am very pleased that I have been proved wrong, and it has been perfect for us in so many ways. “There was a very short window for installation, because the corridor is in use until 7pm, but the process went very smoothly and was completed in just one night. A flooring that needs adhesive would have taken 3 to 4 days to fit. Altro Cantata has delivered a

massive saving in cost, and the corridor was back in full use the next morning. When speaking of the floor handling foot and wheeled traffic, Lee said: “It’s is standing up to the demands well with no signs of movement, bubbling or rippling, which proves it truly is a long term solution and not just a temporary fix. Very impressive. “In terms of aesthetics, the flooring looks superb. There are some great colour choices with Altro Cantata. We

“Sustainability is also an important factor for us. Because Altro Cantata is an adhesive-free flooring it means that in the future, if we need to make repairs, we can simply cut out a section and replace it, without having to re-lay the entire area. And the product is 100% recyclable as well. “Overall, Altro Cantata is meeting all our needs in terms of cost saving, durability, looks and hygiene. This is vital at a time when the NHS is looking to make savings where possible, while also maintaining the highest standards. “We are currently looking at using this product in another non-clinical area of the hospital, where there are similar issues with installation time. We think it will do a fantastic job there as well.” Altro Cantata was installed at Warrington Hospital by Cheshire Contract Flooring Ltd. Director Dave Hunt says: “We specialise in installing flooring in healthcare environments, so we completely understand the pressures in terms of timing, cost and often sensitive environments. Outdoor tiling solutions for balconies, terraces and roof terraces With a surge in popularity for outdoor living, architects, designers and builders are increasingly being faced with the need to incorporate balconies, roof terraces and ground floor terraces into blueprints for commercial and domestic projects. To have these areas available all year round requires coverings that are durable, hard-wearing and all weather – and tiles are the perfect answer. When specified with the correct system assemblies for tiling, many types of tile installations are possible externally. This includes the use of finishes such as ceramics, porcelain, some natural stone and

pavers. However without the correct tiling systems, tiled areas can be susceptible to cracking, efflorescence, or staining – all derived from water damage or fluctuations in temperature. Water penetrating the lower levels of an external assembly can pose a serious risk to the structural integrity of any balcony, terrace or patio. Permeation of water through tile joints will eventually cause damage if no provision is made for water to drain away efficiently. As such, BAL has introduced its new range of External Tiling Solutions in conjunction with sister company Gutjahr to protect outdoor coverings from damage. MARMOX SHOWERLAY 360 drain enables most versatile floor level shower available

British company specialising in insulation and waterproofing products, Marmox, has added a new drainage solution to its range of Showerlay floor level shower bases, which has been designed to simplify the installation of plumbing in both new-build and refurbishment applications and is compliant with all relevant standards.

Joining the company’s extensive range of products, the new Showerlay360 Drain, as the superscript title suggests, is fully rotatable to enable use in horizontal as well as vertical outlet connections – or any angle in between – for total flexibility. For even greater ease and adaptability of installation, the compact drain measures just 80mm deep with a 50mm water seal. It can be utilised with both of Marmox’s Showerlay trays, which are tileable sloping bases for a shower area on either a wooden or concrete subfloor. Two options are available: a 20mm or 24mm version which is supplied with a traditional square drain or a 40mm thick version which features a stainless steel linear drain. Both can be used to create level access showering areas, or wet rooms. The square drain version has a brushed stainless steel grate housed in an integrated frame which can be adjusted to accommodate tiling thicknesses from 5mm to 15mm.

Thanks to the new adjustable Showerlay360 drain, the siting of the drain gully is now infinite, offering endless design opportunities. Depending on the angle of the outlet pipe, the flow rate is 30 to 50 litres per minute, and thus faster than its predecessor. Showerlay, when combined with Marmox’s well tried and tested Multiboard, ensures an exceptionally stable decoupling substrate to tile upon. Manufactured from an extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) core, the boards also provide very good thermal insulation and are completely impermeable to water for a totally leakproof and trouble-free installation. Marmox (UK) additionally manufactures solutions for pipe boxing, curved walls and showers, as well as bath panel kits.

Washrooms for the unintentional vandal

BINOPTIC electronic tap

Shock-resistant sensors withstand repeated impact

There’s a potential vandal in each of us, especially when it comes to using public washrooms and toilets. In public facilities there is a wide variety of technology available and a lack of familiarity may result in unintentional vandalism if the user does not know how an electronic tap works or how to adjust the temperature. Frustration or impatience may manifest in increasingly abusive behaviour and the sanitary fittings provide a convenient target. DELABIE has over 80 years’ experience manufacturing water controls and accessories for the commercial sector. We believe that there are certain considerations that can mitigate against the involuntary vandal such as welldesigned facilities, product suitability and regular maintenance.

Stainless steel soap dispenser 304 stainless steel is self-repairing

Poor housekeeping Aesthetics play a large part. Washroom facilities with an obvious lack of maintenance (broken tiling, soap dispensers with no soap, WCs or urinals with water stains) will lead to contempt for the facilities. Attractive surroundings with well-maintained fixtures and clean, bright surfaces are more likely to elicit respect and care from the user. Fit for purpose System considerations need to be factored in. Pipe size, dynamic pressure and flow rates play an important part.

Failing to adapt the WC flush to system pressure will cause over spray leading to wet floors creating a hazard for users. Similarly, excessive splashing from an incorrectly positioned shower head or an undersized basin will result in surfaces becoming discoloured, joint integrity may fail, materials may warp with the damp and hygiene becomes a major concern. Products that can be easily adjusted to system conditions during installation will pre-empt such problems and provide facilities that are fit for purpose. Durable materials Taps and showers intended for washrooms subject to intensive use such as sports facilities, service stations or airports must be made of robust and durable materials. Push-button controls and mechanisms should have no fragile moving parts. DELABIE mechanisms are made from solid brass and will withstand regular and intensive use. Our electronic sensors are able to withstand impact, even though they are designed to be non-touch. Accessories such as soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers and grab bars for accessible toilets are made from 304 stainless steel – the surface reacts spontaneously with oxygen, forming a protective layer, and guarding the surface against corrosion. Secure fixings Water controls with secure fixings will withstand a heavy-handed user and also more deliberate vandalism. DELABIE’s commercial tapware is designed to fix firmly in place via threaded rods with a horseshoe bracket and back nuts to tighten onto the working surface. Alternatively cross wall fixings and antirotating pins provide an additional level of stability that will withstand any torsion or twisting. Fully recessed models with tamperproof fixings or

concealed fixings leave no opportunity for even the most determined vandal to access the mechanisms. Consideration is often given to how to prevent overt vandalism but facilities managers and building owners need to consider the impact of unintentional vandalism. DELABIE’s water controls and sanitary fittings can provide a complete washroom solution that will minimise the impact of involuntary damage.

Rising to the challenges of urban construction Metsä Wood explores the possibilities of using timber to help solve the housing crisis in our cities

Urbanisation is one of the most significant issues facing humanity today. By 2050, two thirds of the world’s population will live in cities. Consequently, urban growth is fast outpacing the ability to build affordable and sustainable living space. Cities all over the world are in dire need of new ways to house a rapidly growing urban population. Nowhere is this more evident than in the UK and in our capital city, where space is at a premium and housing the ever-growing population continues to pose a huge challenge. London is at the heart of the housing crisis with experts forecasting that the city will require 60,000 new homes a year (around double the current rate) to meet new projections. Innovation in building methods and materials is required for house building in urban areas to hit these targets, while ensuring fast and sustainable construction. One obvious, yet often overlooked solution is to start building up, and stop tearing down. Utilising new modern timber materials such as Metsä Wood’s Kerto® LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber), enables several stories to be constructed on top of existing structures. A building extension constructed with a timber frame can be a fast, sustainable and inexpensive solution. Research shows that approximately a quarter of existing buildings are

strong enough to carry additional floors made of wood. Moreover, it is the only material light enough to build quickly on to existing structures. This makes wood a highly promising building material for providing living space for billions of people – while also preserving the architectural heritage of our cities. One of the other main considerations for considering timber in urban construction is energy efficiency, not only during the construction process but also for the lifetime of the building. This is extremely important in London as it currently has a target of a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2025. With homes and workplaces currently accounting for 78% of CO2 emissions in London and with 80% of the existing housing stock likely to still be in place by 2025, it is essential to improve the energy performance of new builds in order to cut costs and carbon. In the UK, building a million new homes by 2020 in order to meet the demand of the UK housing crisis requires innovative thinking and the need to explore new possibilities, such a hybrid construction, using a range of materials including steel, concrete, brick and timber. Through its Plan B project, Metsä Wood has been challenging the perception of architects, constructions engineers and builders as to what is possible with timber

construction. As part of the project, which explores various possibilities of building with wood, Metsä Wood offers detailed examples of how to build recognizable, but modern versions of well known architectural buildings, such as the Empire State Building using wood as the main material. The models have been exhibited at trade shows across the globe and have helped to raise awareness and spark debate around modern timber construction. Metsä wood also recently ran a competition, inviting architects to design timber structure extensions to existing urban buildings using Kerto® LVL as the

main material. Entries were submitted from 69 cities worldwide, including Sidney, Shanghai, New York, Berlin, Paris and London. The results were impressive, and all entries and winners can be seen on the Metsa website. By promoting and developing innovative design solutions in such a way, Metsä Wood is challenging the perception of what is possible in urban construction. It is now becoming more widely acknowledged that timber products, such as Kerto® LVL timber has a major role to play in building cities of the future using fast, light and green materials. Beaumont Square set to welcome Plymouth students this September With the current academic year nearing its exam led conclusion, students will be looking to their accommodation options for September. And with demand vastly outweighing supply, new and existing students will be keen to secure a spot for themselves.

leaders in providing wealth building opportunities for investors of all levels through property, is delighted to confirm that their brand new Beaumont Square accommodation will be ready for students to move in this September. He comments,

As key university cities continue to attract thousands of students every year, it's no surprise that many B2L investors are turning to Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA). According to figures from HESA, the coastal set Plymouth University was home to 23,155 students in the 15/16 academic year alone. Highlighting an incredibly buoyant market for those investing in PBSA in the city.

"Plymouth will be the location for a vast array of investment projects over the forthcoming months and years. The colossal £266 million investment programme set to transform the city centre, will no doubt enhance Plymouth's attraction as a place for students to complete their studies.

To answer this ongoing demand, Oliver Ramsden Director of Aspen Woolf,

"The greater number of students choosing Plymouth will in turn increase the number of student beds required, with PBSA emerging as the savvy investment option. With work on the internal walls of block B due to be complete by the end of next week, we are confident that our Beaumont Square residence is on track for completion as soon as August. Meaning students will be able to choose the luxury accommodation from September 2017." Enquiry No.227 www.mclink.co.uk/994-227

Specifying Substrates for Wetrooms When considering wetrooms, the most important element is waterproofing. The best way of ensuring a fully waterproof solution is through specifying a fully integrated, CE marked waterproofing system.

Yeoman Shield’s stylish Guardian Bedhead protectors at 900mm long in Cream or Grey, were fitted on spacer brackets, standing slightly away from the wall to ensure full protection was given to the plaster painted wall behind. Ward Manager, Julie Woodworth commented “ I am extremely proud to be the first ward manager to move in the refurbished ward. The reaction from the patients and the staff has been absolutely fantastic.” For more information on Yeoman Shield wall & door protection products and how they can save on maintenance budgets go to www.yeomanshield.com or call 0113 279 5854. 26 REFURBISHMENT & NEW BUILD ArcHaus Receives a Facelift from Remmers

The exterior of this iconic building was suffering with high levels of damage, including salt ingress and excessive cracking to the render and brickwork. Salt Inhibitor was used as a ‘masonry salt blocker’ and applied to the exposed brickwork. Large areas of the render were repaired with Restoration Render and the deep section repairs were completed with Remmers Betofix R2, a fast curing, high strength concrete repair mortar. OS Concre Fill and Impregnation Primer were also applied prior to the application of the final protective coating system. To mitigate reflective cracking in the future, Remmers Elastoflex system with reinforcement was applied throughout, giving a high degree of finish to the exterior of this 1930’s landmark building. Barrier forms secure bond Protection against groundwater ingress as well as gases and chemicals is offered by DualProof – a brand new two-layer durable watertight solution for below ground structures from Delta Membrane Systems.

This is a fully and permanently bonded, pre-applied membrane which is fitted prior to the fixing of steel reinforcement, and the concrete pour. It comprises a sealed two-layer flexible pvc membrane laminated with a nonwoven polypropylene fleece. This fleece makes use of FiberTex technology which gives the necessary bond to the concrete, as it integrates into the concrete when poured giving a strong mechanical bond once cured. It then prevents any lateral water migration between the membrane and the structural concrete, and it even seals small cracks in the concrete. Hollo-BoltÂŽ was specified for the Tallest Skyscraper in Western USA

After Lindapter’s Hollo-Bolt received the full ICC-ES approval for use in all seismic design categories (A to F), it was specified for the tallest building west of Mississippi, situated in a high-risk earthquake zone. Towering 73 stories above downtown Los Angeles, the Wilshire Grand Center includes a hotel, shops, offices and a rooftop ‘sky lobby’ which provides guests with sweeping views of LA that extend to Santa

Monica. The billion-dollar skyscraper was designed by AC Martin and it sets the architectural standard for design, innovation and quality in Los Angeles. The main feature of AC Martin’s design is the swooping glass canopy which creates an atrium with a modern architecturally exposed steel design. Following the structural engineer’s recommendation of using the seismic approved Hollo-Bolt, the steelwork contractors used over 3,000 M20 Hollo-Bolts to secure

Enquiry No.233 www.mclink.co.uk/994-233

the structural hollow sections which form the swooping atrium framework. Hollo-Bolts were installed from just one side, rapidly achieving discreet splice connections without the need for drilling or welding. The extremely cost effective installation did not require specialist equipment or specialist labour. It dramatically reduced the amount of work at height in comparison to traditional welding or through-bolting methods. The design also eradicated the possibility of tube deformation that can be associated with throughbolting if the bolts are over-tightened. The end result was an aesthetically pleasing, clean and subtle connection which complements the design of the architecturally exposed structural steel. The Lindapter Hollo-Bolt has an extensive range of independent approvals, including the CE mark, Los Angeles Research Report (LARR) and full seismic approval from ICC-ES for all seismic design categories (A-F). It is also independently approved as a structural connection for primary steel and features in the SCI/BCSA joint publication ‘Joints in Steel Construction – Simple Connections’ (Or Green Book as it is commonly referred to). The guide provides primary design advice and information on using the Hollo-Bolt for Structural steel connections.

’What’s New at Aluprof’ Key to success for any business today is the ability to be flexible and meet customers changing requirements, this is particularly relevant in the rapidly moving UK construction industry. Over the last few years Aluprof have grown significantly in UK by meeting this need whilst completing all the necessary standards and regulations. Aluprof’s extensive stock of complete systems are based in Poland, where various powder coating and anodising lines quickly coat to Qualicoat or Qualinod standards. Once finished, profiles are thermally broken and insulated with the latest of materials including aerogel, one of the most insulative materials known for use in thermal fenestration design. With Aluprof’s advanced logistics, despatch, direct to the UK fabricator, takes an average of just 24 hours, door to door. Furthermore, add to this an option of an in-house fabrication service, and it is understandable why many UK fabrication and installation companies are quoting Aluprof systems. Has the window revolution arrived? By Neil Puttock, Managing Director at Boavista Windows UK Ltd

EUROPE’S FIRST FULL RANGE OF SUSTAINABLE FIBREGLASS WINDOW FRAMES LAUNCHES IN UK ‘The window revolution has arrived’, according to the company responsible for bringing Boavista, Europe’s first full range of fibreglass window frames that set new industry standards in sustainability, durability and performance, to the UK.

The new range includes a tilt and turn, sash, casement and sliding window and door product, all of which are 100 per cent recyclable and deliver longer lifecycles than uPVC and aluminium frames as a result of fibreglass’s inherent qualities. Boavista’s rigidity also enables its sliding windows and doors to withstand single panes that weigh in excess of 250kg, which is approximately 150 per cent more than its aluminium and uPVC counterparts. This means that those wishing to incorporate glass as a major design feature no longer need to commission and fit specialist, structural glass. Boavista is exclusively available to the UK through Boavista Windows UK Ltd, a company formed by the team behind Meronden Designs, a 20-year-old firm that has provided bespoke glazing solutions for the Lloyds Building, Tiffany & Co. Selfridges in Manchester and Ernst

& Young’s iconic More London Place building. Using the latest in pultrusion technology Boavista’s fibreglass frames are created by pulling resinsoaked glass fibres through heated dies – a process that only consumes 0.07 kilowatt to produce a linear metre of window frame weighing approximately 1kg. The result is a frame with high thermal and acoustic properties that enables the window to retain heat whilst providing an effective barrier to sound.

An American engineer and professor by the name of William Edwards Deming once said, “Innovation comes from the producer – not the customer.” When it comes to the window industry I couldn’t agree more. After all, what is the incentive for the customer to seek alternatives to tried, tested and familiar products - and in this context I mean uPVC and aluminium windows – when those products do exactly what is required of them: they let light in, enable those inside to see out and provide an adequate level of security. However innovation, like evolution, plays a key role in not only enabling us to adapt to the constant changes and demands of a continually changing world, but also pre-empting those changes and demands by developing products and services that significantly improve the lives of those who use them. The launch of Boavista, Europe’s first full range of fibreglass window frames that set new industry standards in sustainability, durability and performance, is a perfect example of this. It is also a move that I believe has the potential to disrupt the current window supply and install model by providing a credible alternative to plastic and aluminium. An alternative that offers those who choose them the opportunity to contribute towards reducing the UK’s carbon footprint without compromising on design, function or form.

The company expects Boavista’s UK arrival to be welcomed by architects and housebuilders as a result of the window’s minimalist design and stylish finish. Fibreglass also expands in line with window glass, removing the need for unsightly gaskets generally required to hold the pane in place and adding aesthetic value to a development.

In fibreglass window frames I believe that the window revolution has arrived, and here’s why.

On launching Boavista in the UK Neil Puttock, Managing Director of Boavista Windows UK Ltd, comments: “Boavista provides an alternative window product that offers those who use it the opportunity to contribute towards reducing the UK’s carbon footprint without compromising on design, function or form. From the perspective of an architect or homeowner fibreglass frames open up a world of possibilities by supporting adventurous designs that, up until now, have been prohibitive due to the cost associated with incorporating bespoke glazing solutions.” The product’s hardwearing properties and rot and corrosion resistance is also expected to appeal to local authorities and facilities managers by reducing the cost associated with window maintenance, repair and repainting.

From the perspective of an architect or homeowner, fibreglass frames support more adventurous designs that would previously have been prohibitive due to the cost associated with incorporating bespoke glazing solutions. Not only that, but fibreglass also expands in line with window glass, removing the need for unsightly gaskets to hold the pane in place, adding aesthetic value to a building.

Neil concludes: “There really is no comparison between Boavista and other window products currently on the market. We now need to make the case for fibreglass and inform those who naturally turn to uPVC and aluminium just what fibreglass is capable of.”

Designing out compromise: In terms of design, fibreglass opens up a world of possibilities due to its strength and stability, which enable it to hold large surface areas of glass, bypassing the need to produce and fit specialist, structural glass.

Perhaps one of the most striking features of a fibreglass frame is that, despite weighing half that of aluminium, it is exceptionally hardwearing, highly rot and corrosion resistant and delivers a much longer lifecycle than PVC and aluminium. In fact it is these factors that have underpinned the material’s success in parts of Europe and Canada, countries that were quick to harness the power of fibreglass to counteract the weather-related erosion that window frames in coastal regions and harsh climates are subject to. We only have to walk down the high street of any coastal town to spot evidence of decay brought about by the continual blowing of sand and the high salt content found within sea air. Reducing the maintenance associated with repainting – or even replacing – windows in these parts of the UK would not only cut costs but also enhance the local environments, removing the sense of decline that some coastal towns, through no fault of their own, sometimes convey. JJI-Joists...... the versatile answer for floors, walls and roofs When it comes to I-Joists first choice amongst builders and architects is the James Jones JJI-Joist, the UK market leader with an estimated 40% market share. Today however, JJI-Joists are being used for much more than just floor systems. JJI-Joists are now commonly used as wall studs where the range of depths and 9mm web make them ideal when thermal efficiency and depth of insulation are paramount. A lot of architects are turning to JJIJoists when designing to Passivhaus standards because of this. JJi-Joists are also being increasingly used in roof structures as well either as rafters or where cassette panels, formed using JJI-Joists and OSB sheets, are used to create a fully insulated ‘room in a roof’. Today the cassette roof principle has been widely

adopted, and not just for houses. JJI-Joist based cassettes are ideal where larger spans – up to 12 metres - are required, such as schools and leisure facilities and where speed of installation is important. Pull out

VELUX® AHEAD OF THE CURVE WITH LAUNCH OF NEW ROOFLIGHTS

over half of single storey extensions in the UK have flat roofs, and over two thirds of flat roof extensions have no glazing in the roof. Grant Sneddon, product manager at VELUX said: “We are extremely proud of our new curved glass rooflight range - the first of its kind in the world. “Our own research has shown that many homeowners do not realise the daylight potential of glazing in the roof until after they have they have completed their projects With our new curved glass rooflight, we have expanded the choice of flat roof windows available to homeowners, allowing them to mix and match to suit each room in their home. Flat roof extensions can often be seen from other levels of the house so, as well as proving a range of interior benefits, we have designed the curved glass rooflight to look great both inside and out.”

Curved glass rooflight is a world first Leading roof window manufacturer VELUX® has launched the world’s first curved glass rooflight for flat roofs. The VELUX curved glass rooflight features CurveTech, an innovative curve-shaped glass top that lets rainwater easily drain off the surface – even on completely flat roofs. That means daylight is able to shine through without raindrops getting in the way.

The new curved glass rooflight offers a number of other unique benefits for homeowners looking to bring in more daylight through the roof: · A fully programmable control pad offers remote control operation of outof-reach rooflights. Practical pre-fitted rain sensor closes the rooflight automatically in the event of rain. · A combination of insulating PVC frame and double-glazed, low-energy inner pane ensures heat does not escape through the window and helps to maintain the home’s ideal indoor climate.

· The curved glass shape provides natural drainage of rainwater, negating the need for regular cleaning. Toughened glass makes it virtually impervious to damage from the elements. Maintenance free PVC material used on the interior frame is also easy to clean.

Five different sizes of rooflight will be made available in April, along with another three at the end of May, providing homeowners with flexibility when looking for roof windows to match room size. Recent research into the flat roof window market by VELUX revealed that

The base unit of the VELUX curved glass rooflight is the same as other flat roof window products, making installation hassle free for installers. The new curved glass rooflight is available now. For more information visit www.velux.co.uk/curvedglass Enquiry No.245 www.mclink.co.uk/994-245

38 FOCUS ON: ROOFING, CLADDING & INSULATION: KEMPER SYSTEM

Kemper System takes centre stage at Greenwich Theatre When the roof of a popular London theatre was no longer watertight, cold-applied liquid waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, provided the ideal solution.

Roofing contractors, Capitol Roofing Co Ltd of Blackheath in Greenwich, specified Kemperol 2K-PUR to refurbish the existing 500 sq. m asphalt roof at the Greenwich Theatre, south-east London, to stop water ingress into the four-storey building. Thanks to its solvent-free and odourless qualities, Kemperol 2K-PUR was an obvious choice for refurbishment works on the occupied building. In addition, its quick installation benefits meant Capital Roofing Co Ltd, were able to meet their tight project deadline, and the works on the theatre were completed in time for the start of the festive show season.

Once Capital Roofing Co Ltd carried out extensive repairs and cleaned the surface they primed the existing roof surface then applied the Kemperol 2KPUR resin in a single wet-on-wet process. The cold-applied resin was rolled onto the roof with a reinforcement fleece laid directly in to the wet resin, immediately followed by more resin to ensure complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece. Once cured, the resin formed a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate, is UV stable and bonds directly to the substrate. Because the Kemperol 2K-PUR system is ideal for complex detailing, this meant a new, up-and-over staircase was able to be installed whilst still providing a seamless liquid waterproofing solution. A Kemperdur anti-slip walkway for safe maintenance traffic was added to complete the waterproofing works. The installation team at Capitol Roofing Co Ltd completed the refurbishment of the Greenwich Theatre roof on time, to budget and specification. Chris Shulver at Capitol Roofing Co Ltd, said: “The existing roof at the theatre was failing resulting in water leaking through onto the seats inside. We had

some very tight deadlines to adhere to, which is why we choose Kemperol 2KPUR because of its quick and easy installation system. “The fact that the waterproofing solution is eco-friendly as well as odourless was an added bonus for the client, as work was able to be carried out whilst the building was still occupied. The theatre could carry on as normal with minimal waste removal or nuisance odours to disrupt employees or guests to the theatre, and without the fire risk of hot works. “With a BBA accredited 25-year service life, Kemperol 2K-PUR provided the ideal solution for the Greenwich Theatre refurbishment.” Greenwich Theatre is a popular, local playhouse located in Croom's Hill, close to the centre of Greenwich in south-east London. The theatre first came to Greenwich at the beginning of the 19th century during the famous Eastertide Greenwich Fair at which the Richardson travelling theatre annually performed. Since then, it has seen the likes of Mia Farrow, Charles Dance and Susannah York perform. Website: www.kempersystem.co.uk Enquiry No.247 www.mclink.co.uk/994-247

Decothane is Effective Medicine for West Suffolk Hospital Roof Sika Liquid Plastics has specified and supplied a roof upgrade solution for West Suffolk Hospital to renew the waterproofing membrane on multiple areas of the hospital campus and create a gradual pitch to aid drainage while enhancing the building’s thermal performance. The project is the fourth and final phase of a roof refurbishment at the hospital in Bury St. Edmunds, where significant issues with standing water had comprised the existing felt and asphalt roof surfaces and were causing an ongoing risk of water ingress. A large district hospital set in 19 hectares of parkland, West Suffolk Hospital has around 430 beds and serves a population of around 275,000 within an area of approximately 600 square miles. It offers a wide range of services, including oncology, maternity, paediatrics and orthopaedics, within an estate that dates back to 1973. Delivered by specialist contractor, Allard Construction, the phase four programme included seven sections of the building in a 20 week programme. The seven areas that needed work were all under heavy coverage of mechanical plant and pipework, and consequently there were large areas of restricted access, these issues made Sika Liquid Plastics the perfect choice for the project. Sika Liquid Plastics’ technical team carried out a full condition survey to help inform the technical specification

and input into a full solution that addresses the issues with standing water, brings the building up to current Part L building regulations and offers a robust, long-term waterproofing solution. Core samples were taken on each roof area where possible. Where this was not possible due to standing water, the team used their expertise of the substrate to develop the technical specification. The resulting proposal included making good the existing asphalt on all roof areas within the project scope and raising the perimeter details to accommodate the level of the new insulation. Sika Liquid Plastics proposed a warm roof specification with tapered Decotherm insulation along with Decothane Delta 25 & Ultra 25 coldapplied liquid membrane. The tapered insulation created a gentle fall allowing water to drain off the roof preventing areas of standing water. For each roof area, Allard Construction drained any standing water, cleaned the substrate, removed any chippings and made good the existing asphalt surface. Once the roof surface had

Comments Louie Farrington from Sika Liquid Plastics: “This was an extremely complex programme of works in a live hospital environment and the specification of the Sika warm roof system not only ensures a BBAaccredited service life of 25 years but also enabled installation of the coldapplied system with no hot works or disruption to patients and staff.

been cleaned and prepared, the Decotherm insulation was laid onto the existing substrate, which also served as the vapour control layer (VCL).

“The result is a completed series of roofs that address the risk of standing water and provides improved thermal performance while extending the service life of the hospital building.

Sika Liquid Plastics’ S-Vap 5000E SA self-adhesive carrier membrane was then installed onto the insulation prior to application of the membrane. Because of the nature of the project it was essential that the work was lowodour especially in areas of the hospital where patients were more receptive to odours, such as in the maternity ward. Following this Decothane Delta 25 or Ultra 25 membrane were applied in the respective areas.

Among the technical challenges that they overcome was the need to create a roof system with a variable pitch ranging from 0 up to a steep 35 degrees, with tapered seams, and the fact that the roof was un-insulated and supported only on purlins – meaning that any damage or depression on the profile during install would be clearly visible from within the building. 42 HEATING, PLUMBING & VENTILATION Where do you get your news? In case you hadn’t noticed, the world of news has changed rapidly over the last few years with social media transforming the way we as individuals receive and consume information. Platforms such as Twitter are often the best place to pick up breaking news and even Youtube offers a news service, so the traditional methods such as newspapers and even TV are facing stiff competition from almost every angle. There is a place for a daily newspaper and regular monthly magazine of course, as this can allow readers to delve deeper into a subject that flitting around on an i-phone is likely to allow. You are also far more likely to come across an article or piece of news that you simply may miss if you only ever receive the ‘tailored’ items that your app believes you want, which is important in these days of needing to keep up with legislation. And of course, you are less likely to be the victim of ‘fake’ news if you rely on a reputable source. A new approach So you might be interested in a new website that promises to offer comment and opinion on a host of issues relating to energy use in the built environment. Called The Hub, it’s the brainchild of leading manufacturer, Mitsubishi Electric and, although it does contain articles from the company’s technical experts, it is by no means simply A N Other manufacturer’s

STUDOR develops unique solution for unique building It was local council concerns of the perceived risks from SARS and other airborne viruses that resulted in an innovative, new drainage solution at the iconic O2 arena. Once Greenwich Council dismissed the option to use open stacks within the tented area of this iconic London landmark, it was down to the UK’s best plumbing engineers to resolve the issue.

Studor, with their deep knowledge of drainage ventilation systems, worked together with ME Engineers and a team at Heriot-Watt University. The Studor System solution incorporated Studor Air Admittance Valves (AAVs) coupled with P.A.P.A. (Positive Air Pressure Attenuator) units. The P.A.P.A. acts like a shock absorber, dissipating pressure waves and stopping them bouncing around the plumbing system, thereby eliminating the need for roof penetrations at the O2.

website as Russell Jones from Mitsubishi Electric explains: “The Hub will look at legislation, technology and the issues affecting buildings and the built environment, as well as provide useful links to help visitors understand where they can get further information.” The site contains posts from leading industry editors, as well as Mitsubishi Electric’s own experts and focuses on a range of subjects that will appeal to corporations, housing associations, consultants and installers, as well as consumers in general. “There is a lot going on at the moment with regards to saving energy within our built environment and it can be difficult to keep track of everything,” adds Jones. “The Hub will provide one searchable site that will build into a useful resource over time.” The site is smartphone and tablet friendly so that it can be viewed on the go, and also contains an advanced search facility to make finding relevant articles easy and straightforward. Visitors can also sign up to receive a monthly email newsletter, highlighting pertinent subjects and the blog site is optimised so that articles can be easily shared on all major social media platforms.

“The O2 was a difficult project because it was breaking new ground and no typical model existed,” explained Studor expert Steve White. “The data we produced included flow calculations, flow rates and pipe sizing to deal with air and transient pressures.” The university team which worked alongside Studor, determined that any gas build-up would follow the water flow. By placing all urinals on a twelve-hour flush cycle they greatly alleviated the potential of any gas build-up problem. “This resulted in the world's first sealed drainage system, totally without the need for any open vents,” said White from Studor. “It not only maintained the clean lines of the iconic roof but also minimised the environmental impact and kept costs down by reducing materials and labour.” The O2 has an overall diameter of 365m, a circumference of 1km and is 50m high at its central point. When at full capacity, the building can hold 60,000 people and has 548 toilets. While inside the O2 the full drainage and ventilation system is sealed, the outside pump stations are on pillars with open vents that are spaced 300 metres apart to dispense any odours are generated within the complex. Stokvis Solar at Birmingham International Andrea Leadsom MP is VIP visitor to The installation of a ten panel Solar array featuring Stokvis Energy Systems Johnson & Starley solar collectors, to serve existing facilities at Birmingham International Rail Station, is being assessed as a potential pilot for a wider roll out of renewable energy across the facilities operated by Network Rail and Virgin Trains nationally. The project at Birmingham International - a station which serves both the NEC and the adjoining airport - was jointly commissioned by Network Rail and Virgin Trains, with renewables specialist ECO2SOLAR Ltd carrying out the installation of the Stokvis solar equipment. In addition to the 10 Stokvis DF100-6 Evacuated Tube Collectors - offering a net absorber area 10.69m - the manufacturer also supplied a Stokvis Solar Bloc Maxi pump-station, and a Stokvis Resol BX Plus differential temperature controller, providing up to eight sensor inputs. Richard Davis, the engineer in charge of the project for Virgin Trains, commented: "We chose to use Stokvis equipment because I was already aware

of the company's reputation for offering high quality products to the health sector and hotel chains; and have previously attended a seminar on their systems and products. This was always going to be a challenging retrofit, and although there have been some initial teething issues, Stokvis UK Sales Director, Keith Howard has been really proactive in resolving them. I believe we are going to see real savings." The solar fluid contained within the solar collectors is circulated by the solar bloc pump station to a large surface area coil contained within a 1000 litre stainless steel thermal storage vessel which provides a ‘pre-heat' for the domestic hot water, serving the station's toilets and various shops and eateries around the main concourse linking to the airport and NEC. Man Up! Timeguard adds high power die-cast LED floodlights to its branded-quality range Slimline die-cast 70W, 100W and 150W outdoor floodlights have joined the Timeguard LED line up. They deliver up to 11,220 lumens, diffused over a 100o beam angle by smart lens and polished reflector designs. This means that energy-saving LED can now match the performance and coverage of old-style halogens for heavy-duty outdoor security and lighting jobs. As is now expected from Timeguard, these are among the easiest units to install, with full sized, easy-access wiring blocks, a second weatherproof gland for looping in and out, and easily-adjustable wall brackets. Lights like these are always offered as sealed units and lamps cannot be changed, so you need to know the whole assembly will last the distance. Timeguard always use superior components and large cooling fins designed into the body to prevent overheating, which could shorten product life. This is a further reassurance of Timeguard’s branded quality, which is also backed up by an extended guarantee.

Rhodes & Partners launches new approval service for Timber Structures North-west structural engineers Rhodes & Partners has launched a new service which provides a valuable sales aid for manufacturers of timber buildings and similar structures. The company now offers a full design and drawings package which confirms the design quality and structural performance of off-the-shelf, packaged or bespoke timber-frame buildings, such as barns, garages, stables and porches. “Having provided this type of support to a number of our existing clients, we decided to officially add it to the range of services we offer,” explains Rhodes & Partners’ Managing Director, Nick Ribbeck. “We found that timber frame manufacturers really value our input in this area. They told us that it really helps when they can show customers that their own design calculations and drawings have been verified by an independent, professionally qualified third party. The manufacturers can thus assure customers that their oak, other hardwood and softwood buildings conform to the structural requirements of current Building Regulations, British Standards and Eurocodes. Do more with welded carbide teeth IRWIN® WeldTec™ Circular Saw Blades deliver 50% longer life and are extremely durable even under extreme working conditions. These IRWIN blades feature WeldTec™ Technology which means the welded tooth bond is up to 25% stronger than a brazed joint, so your blade will last longer if it hits foreign objects like nails and staples that could otherwise cause a blade to break. The sub-micro grain carbide teeth are also 70% stronger than standard carbide teeth. UC2 carbide stays sharper, longer because the carbide grains used to form the teeth are smaller, providing the tightest packing of carbide possible for a quality, durable cutting edge. This allows for ultra compact carbide teeth that provide best-in-class cut quality. The IRWIN WeldTec Circular Saw Blade also has an Alternate Top Bevel (ATB) tooth grind making it perfect for cross cutting and ripping in all woods, while innovative heat vents and expansion slots will help with chip ejection and keep the blade cool to guard against warping and resulting in straighter cuts.
