GROWTH SLOWS FOR CONSTRUCTION SMES
The SME construction sector grew in the second quarter of 2017, albeit at a slower rate in most parts of the UK than the first three months of the year, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
Key results from the FMB’s State of Trade Survey for Q2 2017, which is the only quarterly assessment of the UK-wide SME construction sector, include: • Q2 2017 was the 17th consecutive

quarter of positive growth which means that the construction SME sector has been growing for more than four years (ie since Q2 2013); • Almost one in two construction SMEs predict rising workloads in the coming three

months, with just 9% predicting a decrease in activity; • 83% of builders believe that material prices will rise in the next six months; • 60% of construction SMEs are struggling to hire bricklayers; 57% are struggling to hire carpenters and joiners; and 47% are struggling to hire plumbers; • Almost two-thirds (62%) of construction SMEs expect salaries and wages to increase in the next six months. Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Rising material prices and salaries could be starting to dampen growth among construction SMEs. However, it is encouraging to see that the sector has continued to grow despite the recent snap General Election and the resulting hung Parliament. The construction SME sector is particularly vulnerable to any dips in consumer confidence that might come from periods of political uncertainty. It may be that a number of home owners decided to delay any big spending decisions on new extensions or loft conversions while the election campaign was underway – this would account for the slowdown in growth seen in the second quarter of 2017.” Berry concluded: “Looking ahead, almost two-thirds of construction firms expect wages and salaries to increase over the next six months and this is in contrast to stagnant wages elsewhere in the economy. Rising salaries are undoubtedly the result of the escalating construction skills shortage – construction workers know their worth and are demanding higher wages from their employers. The majority of construction SMEs are struggling to recruit key tradespeople such as bricklayers and carpenters and we’re seeing shortages in other trades, such as plumbers and plasterers, starting to creep up. With Brexit on the horizon and worrying talk of the so-called ‘Tier 2’ immigration system replacing the free movement of people, the construction industry urges Ministers to bear in mind their strategic house building and infrastructure targets before pulling up the drawbridge on EU migrant workers.”

Builders’ merchants sold 8.5% more to builders and contractors in May 2017 than in the same month the previous year, assisted by one extra trading day. The rise is 3.3% when adjusted for trading days. The latest figures from the Builders Merchants Federation show that kitchens & bathrooms had the biggest increase (+13.0%), with timber & joinery products (+10.1%) also well ahead of the channel average. The Builders Merchants Building Index (BMBI) tracks actual sales to builders and contractors using point-ofsale tracking data gathered by GfK. The BMBI represents over 80% of the value of the builders' merchants' market. Landscaping (+6.0%) had its strongest performance since GfK’s data was first collected in July 2014, helped by May’s particularly warm weather, the third-warmest May in 50 years.

UK Construction Week has announced that it will be holding a series of safety workshops that respond to the issues raised by the Grenfell Tower fire. The organisers said that the free, one-hour CPD-certified sessions will address the specification and use of products from the viewpoint of safety, quality and fire prevention in buildings. The aim is to ensure that all participants are given the most up-to-date advice and guidance on the main issues affecting the built environment following the tragedy at Grenfell Tower. The UK Construction Week training will take place from 10 to 12 October at the Birmingham NEC. Earlier this month UK Construction Week issued a survey that received over 1,000 responses from construction professionals. The survey asked them to identify the professional bodies they want the most up-to-date guidance from; the type of products and services that are now a priority for on-going and future projects; and how the industry can learn from Grenfell Tower fire and move forward. The survey results have shaped a series of workshops, which will seek to clarify the latest advice and guidance for the industry. Topics include: • Building Regulations – an update and interpretation; • Fire prevention – guidance on sprinklers, fire doors, dampening; • Flammable building materials – looking at cladding and other materials and latest advice; • Health & safety – knowing your responsibilities and up to date guidance on the latest legislation; • Improving safety through technology. Event director Nathan Garnett, , said, “In light of recent tragic events in London, and the fact that there are millions of square metres of building space being refurbished, refitted and built right now, the industry must act swiftly to decipher the latest guidance and advice by separating the facts from the fiction. By collaborating with the authorities and professional bodies, we at UK Construction Week have responded with a series of free, CPD certified workshops to address the latest issues and provide the facts from people the industry knows and can trust.” For more information and free registration visit http://bit.ly/2v4
House-builders continue to see sales growing The house-building market appears to have ridden the disturbance of this year’s general election without suffering any damage. Persimmon Homes reports in a trading update that business has been ‘excellent’ throughout the year so far, while Gleeson Homes is planning to double its output within five years. Despite the general election taking place on 8th June 2017, with the result generating considerable political uncertainty, house-building activity during the month did not just grow, but grew at the second fastest monthly rate since December 2015, according to a survey of construction purchasing managers. In a trading update for the period from 1st January to 30th June 2017, Persimmon has revealed that its legal completions had risen by 8% to 7,794 new homes (2016: 7,238) and average selling price was up 3.5% to £213,000 (2016: £205,762). Revenue for the half-year grew by 12% to reach £1.66bn (2016: £1.49bn). “We have continued to experience good levels of customer demand… with the market taking the snap UK
general election in its stride. “We expect the group's strong trading through the first half of the year, including the contribution from 95 new sales outlets opened in the period, will lead to further good progress in our operating margin. We anticipate that the group's operating margin in the first half of 2017 will comfortably exceed the 25.7% delivered in the second half of the prior year.” MJ Gleeson also reports business growth, with unit sales in its house-building division up 12% for its financial year ending 30th June 2017. Gleeson Homes specialises in building low cost homes in the north of England to sell to people on low incomes. It sold 1,013 homes during the year, an increase of 12.1% compared with the previous year's total of 904. Reservations during the last six months were 45% higher than the same period last year. Having reached its interim target of building 1,000 new homes a year, Gleeson Homes is setting a new target of building 2,000 new homes a year within five years.

SterlingOSB – a name that means business When you buy a commodity product like cement or aggregate, the name on the packaging seldom matters. But that’s not the case with OSB, it seems. Recent research carried out on behalf of Norbord has found that a whopping 80% of both builders and builders’ merchants react positively to the SterlingOSB brand name. SterlingOSB is the UK’s leading brand of oriented strand board and the name and logo can be seen on building sites the length and breadth of the UK. With a reputation for quality, durability and availability, the name SterlingOSB carries weight with both buyers and stockists. The term “Sterling board” has even become a generic term for all OSB – a fact that, while flattering, has potential negative impact when applied to inferior products.

Can radioactive radon seep into your buildings? Most areas of the UK are affected! The Building Regulations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all require that all new buildings or extensions in “Radon Affected Areas” have protective measures installed during construction. According to government and BRE maps, few areas across the UK are unaffected. The most effective protection methods are those that prevent radioactive radon from entering – usually by permeating through the floor. However, measuring the flow of radon through a material or structure has traditionally been slow, complex and very expensive – but now Versaperm has introduced a permeability meter that can measure this flow through either a sample of building material or a complex, multi-layer, structural element. Radon contributes a massive 50% of the overall average radiation dose across the UK and, after cigarettes, is the largest cause of lung cancer in the UK.

Superquilt multi-layer foil earns Agrement Approval The effectiveness of SuperQuilt, part of the YBS range, as a single layer insulation solution for use beneath pitched roof rafters, in either new-build or refurbishment situations has been underlined by the award of a coveted BBA Certificate. Agrement Certificate 17/5388 explains in detail how the already widely specified, multi-layer foil insulation can be used to retain energy within attic or habitable loft spaces: cutting fuel bills, improving comfort levels for building occupants and adding value. Importantly it can be employed to address detail areas such as the cheeks of dormers, dwarf walls, bonnet hips and other features. The Certification comes after prolonged evaluation by the British Board of Agrement and covers such considerations as related Building Regulation matters. design criteria, ventilation and installation guidance, as well as regular review by the highly respect authority. Crucially, the Agrement Certificate confirms that under normal conditions the durability of the SuperQuilt will be equivalent to that of the roof it is installed within and will contribute to controlling condensation in the roof space, while offering very good thermal performance. The emissivity of 0.03 for the
outer foil is complemented by a declared core thermal resistance of 1.35 m2KW. The Certificate further states that the BBA believes SuperQuilt can satisfy the requirements of not only the Building Regulations 2010 (England and Wales), but also the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012, The Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004: making it “fit for purpose” nationwide. SuperQuilt is also used routinely by contractors and developers in the construction of exterior walls, where it is able to offer significant space savings thanks to its minimal 40mm thickness.

A FIREWALL IS FOR LIFE It's not just a wall, it's a firewall, and use of composite panels for such crucial protection is giving buildings a huge performance boost. But, warns Brett Harrington, Divisional Manager for the Firewall and Data Division of ISD Solutions, you get what you pay for and firewalls must never become mere commodities for sacrifice on the altar of cost. Fire is the disaster that does not discriminate. No matter what or where your company is, fire can destroy it. The importance of fire safety from composite firewalls should therefore never be understated. The trend to use composite panel walls for applications including firewalls in modern warehouse construction is on the increase because of the multiple advantages they offer. In fact, their use across the warehouse sector is fast replacing traditional stud and block products in everything from warehouses and offices to cold stores and distribution centres. They are lightweight, tremendously durable and have improved thermal properties. Furthermore, build times are reduced, construction costs are lower and maintenance is easier. Compared to blockwork its carbon footprint is lower too. And with demand growing for ever-more cost-effective warehousing and all kinds of other storage at home and abroad, we have never been busier. But with opportunities come responsibilities – major ones. Firewalls must never be seen to be a mere commodity open to corner cutting on costs or time. They must use the most innovative fire-protection products, recognised by fire authorities and insurance companies. ISD Firewall, for example, is built around the latest steel-faced composite panels with non-combustible mineral fibre cores to offer complete protection for premises and their contents. These are an evolutionary replacement for jumbo stud or block walling that are faster to install, more aesthetically pleasing and completely demountable for re-use or re-positioning. The best designed firewall packages cover all aspects of junctions and penetrations, sealed using approved materials, which fully meet all clients’ fire protection requirements. The result is clean and smooth, stylish and safe. Furthermore, they are convenient and boast another key advantage: composite panels are a finished product. Traditional wall types, on the other hand, require 'follow-on' or 'wet trades' to plaster and paint the wall after installation. This in turn often requires scaffolding, which slows down the installation further. Composite panels therefore lead to significant savings in construction programmes and costs. The benefits stack up and are demonstrable: ISD Solutions is seeing upfront savings in build costs of up to 20% when compared to a traditional facility and a reported 30%
increase in long-term energy efficiency when compared to traditionally clad building projects for a range of commercial and industrial structures. The facts speak for themselves in exemplar installations such as Hydraforce. The leading manufacturer of hydraulic valves and controls wanted to expand its manufacturing facility by 7,000 square metres to allow it to bring more manufacturing over to the UK from its parent company in America. A major part of the construction project included a 30-minute fire-rated divisional wall to separate office and canteen areas from the warehouse. A series of non-fire rated walls and ceilings meanwhile formed a goods-in-and-out area and quality lab. The project was delivered to the required spec in just six weeks. Fire-rated viewing windows were installed within the office and canteen areas – all seamlessly integrated within the composite panels installed. It looks as well as it functions. All this was achievable because the most innovative fireprotection products were used to meet the requirements of independent certification bodies such as Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB). But design and installation are no less important than products and materials. Why should people choose expensive advanced reliable walling systems? Primarily to protect life, and property. By choosing products that are third-party accredited, the designer or architect is able to mitigate those risks and show due diligence has been met. The primacy of protecting life and property means firewalls need to be taken seriously. Products not appropriately thirdparty tested could contribute to a fire rather than stop its progress. An inferno in 1993 at a food processing factory in Hereford resulted in two fire fighters losing their lives after being trapped by a collapsed ceiling. The nature of construction does not always help. In many areas of the sector contractors are in a fiercely competitive market and increasingly looking to cut costs in any way possible. There will always be a temptation to use a cheaper “equivalent” product rather than an approved or specified one to gain the edge in winning work. But is that so-called equivalent the best product available to ensure fire does not spread? Rarely is the best product the most cost-effective and therefore the construction industry
risks building with average products and unskilled labour to reduce costs. As with most things, you get what you pay for, and using accredited products and installers minimises risks. Nowhere is the benefit of using the best products and installers more evident than in design details: the best designed firewall packages cover all aspects of junctions and penetrations. A partition may have multiple types of penetration such as services, steel frames, pedestrian or industrial doors and windows, but each component is integral to create the fire barrier. Such intricate design details were the focus of Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB), which wanted fire walls and compartmentation for a massive new Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) facility for Essex Waste Partnership in Basildon. One of Europe's biggest waste treatments, it processes up to 417,000 tonnes of municipal waste from across the county. Containment and separation for the various treatment stages within the facility were critical to ensure safety, minimise fire risk and confine corrosive processing environments. ISD Solutions installed 8,500 square metres of specialist composite steel-faced panels within the concrete and steel structure to form airtight fire separation between key processing areas. The solution met stringent design parameters and used HPS200 coated panels and a unique ceramicoat coating on the firebatt which sealed the firewalls. The resulting highspec ‘marine quality’ solution is able to withstand volatile and corrosive conditions, minimise fire risk and help to limit insurance requirements for the facility. Projects of this scale and complexity set unique challenges. Dealing with the potentially corrosive environment needed a very high-spec solution and meticulous installation. But by selecting third-party-tested products and using accredited installers clients know they are selecting the best the market can offer. An experienced design team, covered with extensive PI insurance selects and installs the best solution for each scenario. Some companies use a sub-contracted designer rather than an employed design team which can raise quality issues. Other companies provide no design for their panel installation at all.

Aggregate Industries keeps it light for high rise apartments
Aggregate Industries’ Lytacrete solution was the product of choice when it came to helping to introduce an additional floor midconstruction at a new seven story upmarket apartment scheme in Southampton. Located on Albert Road South, Southampton, the luxury apartment block was originally conceived as a six story scheme. Part-way through construction, plans were redesigned to include an additional floor – creating 20 apartments (7 one bedroom, 12 two bedroom and 1 three bedroom) for the area. The challenge for Wright Investments was to include another floor without overloading the existing structure that was already in place – no easy feat. However, fortunately this was made possible with the help of Aggregate Industries who suggested Lytacrete – a specialist lightweight solution – in place of conventional weighty concrete. Smart bathroom flooring choices can help people stay independent in their own homes for longer, explains Esther Bond, Specifications Consultant at Altro. Home adaptations allow individuals who are disabled, ageing or vulnerable to continue to live in their own homes for longer. This does require, however, homes to be adapted to provide a safe and comfortable environment for them to live in. When houses are adapted, you need to not only consider the needs of the individual now, but in the future. Physical and mental health can deteriorate over time, and to have a familiar environment that does not have to be changed reduces stress and confusion after the house modification. The bathing experience is an important part of life and environments should help people feel safe and relaxed. Colour is a way of achieving this, creating a warm, comforting and homely environment, even where the home is adapted with specialist equipment. We can recommend colour combinations that are appropriate for people with dementia and those with visual impairments. More accidents happen at home than anywhere else. That’s why safety should always be an important consideration when adapting a home. Slips and trips can easily happen when floors are wet or there is an uneven surface. Wet environments are not just about water; it’s also what we use in those areas, including shower gel and shampoo. The slip risks that these contaminants create are potentially dangerous and could cause serious accidents. Slips and falls aren’t the only consideration in wet environments. Indoor humidity and poor cleaning can lead to build-ups of bacteria and mould, which can impact health as well as the appearance of the rooms. For bathrooms, look for safety flooring that guarantees to reduce the chance of a slip or trip to one in a million, for the lifetime of the flooring so you can rest assured your home adaption will be safe for years to come.
In practical terms, adaptions that are easy to clean and maintain is an important consideration. Quite often
carers are in the workforce or are themselves elderly. Having an environment that is easy to keep clean makes life easier – and safer - for everyone. Surfaces that are impervious and can be washed and even steam cleaned allows the highest levels of hygiene to be maintained. Look for bathroom solutions such as a watertight and integrated floor and wall system that is easy to clean and is safe with a number of contaminants such as shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Also look for the latest specialist safety flooring, designed to keep you safe in wetrooms, bathrooms, toilets, whether you are barefoot or wearing shoes, so you are safe no matter what you’re wearing (or not!). There are many reasons to choose safety flooring over tiles in domestic bathroom adaptations. Tiles and grouting are porous, making them more susceptible to harbouring bacteria. Tiles chip and crack more easily, allowing dirt and bacteria to collect and hide from cleaners. They can also allow water to reach the substrate, causing damage to walls. Grout lines are particularly vulnerable and even epoxy grout is susceptible. Unlike tiles, safety floors have no grout, giving bacteria nowhere to hide. In people’s homes more than anywhere, a comfortable, welcoming and attractive look matters. There are plenty of safety flooring options with contemporary shades that suit any domestic environment, including latest innovations with a soft-look finish that is more homely than traditional safety flooring. REFURBISHMENT & NEW BUILD
The original 1958 concrete framed building was failing due to decay and ingress of water and needed structural stabilisation. DSP Architecture were appointed to repair and encapsulate the frame, resulting in a stunning transformation into a very modern teaching block befitting its ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating and complementing the other new school buildings. The renovation required removal of the old concrete spandrel panels, repairs to the concrete structure and then over-cladding with Kalwall panels supported on a new steel frame which was added to extend the floor space . The build was completed in two phases over the course of a year while the school continued to operate. The ability to keep the school functioning while the work was completed meant minimum disruption to staff and students. This meant there was minimal use of temporary classrooms during the works, thereby saving time and money.
Kalwall® sheds light on education
The two fully replaced elevations are a perfect example of how Kalwall can be used for the refurbishment of old and failing cladding and for aged buildings. The new façades allow floor to ceiling diffused and healthy daylight to flood the interior while providing privacy for students and removing any distractions. An integrated row of clerestory windows provides
ventilation and limited views to the outside. Studies show there is a high correlation between daylighting and increased human comfort. Kalwall eliminates all shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade which not only reduces eye fatigue but also enhances concentration. The system also enhances simplicity by doing away with the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is flooded with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. The standard Kalwall 70mm thick panel offers insulation up to 0.28W/m2K - equivalent to a cavity filled solid wall. Case studies and technical information are available from Structura UK Ltd on tel: 01233 501 504 or by visiting www.structura-uk.com/kalwall Geraldine Walder project architect at DSP comments, “The client specifically requested Kalwall for this project after seeing how well it worked on our previous project for the adjoining 6th form building. The advantage of it being fabricated off-site meant disruption and time on-site were minimised while the combination of high insulation, natural daylight and ventilation means reduced energy costs”. Modular Building Specialists Actavo Announces Major Expansion Actavo, the UK’s fastest-growing modular building company for the past three years, has expanded its presence with the opening of a new 120,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Hull, initially creating 33 new jobs. The new factory, located at 30 Freightliner Road in Hull, will produce bespoke, state-of-the-art modular accommodation for a variety of sectors, including education, healthcare, construction, commercial, rail and defence. CEO of Actavo | Structural Division, Roger Hastie, said “Today’s opening takes place against the backdrop of a revolution in the building industry, where modern methods of construction are increasingly being embraced. Faster, costeffective and more flexible, there is now a groundswell of support for modular construction’s ability to address many of the challenges we face in terms of supply and demand for accommodation in both the public and private sectors. We look forward to operating from our new Hull base and to playing an active role in the locality in the years ahead.”
Matthew Goff, Operations Director for Actavo | Building Solutions, said “Actavo is delighted to be establishing its new manufacturing facility and generating employment here in Hull. Initially, 33 new jobs are being created, and this number will rise over the next 12 months. Actavo chose Hull primarily due to the critical mass of industry and the skilled workforce in the city and surrounding areas. Our new premises is also strategically located, adjacent to the A116 Ring Road on the
western side of Hull city centre, which is ideal for an offsite construction company. As a business, we have always sought to lead from the front. In addition to being the UK’s fastestgrowing modular building company for 2014, 2015 and 2016, we were one of the first modular building companies to fully implement BIM Level 2 into our business.” Chairman and CEO of Actavo, Sean Corkery, commented: “As a company involved in many different sectors and geographies, we are extremely proud of the phenomenal growth of Actavo | Buildings in the UK in recent years. While the attention today is understandably on construction and
innovative design techniques, essentially our primary focus is on people – the thousands of families, workers, teachers, pupils, students, healthcare professionals, patients, defence force members and others who will benefit from using these modular buildings into the future.”

BOLD BRASS Road and rail tunnels are not often associated with inspirational design but this tunnel portal building in Austria, defined by perforated Nordic Brass copper alloy from Aurubis, takes a particularly bold approach. The 5.5km long Bosruck Tunnel passes through the Ennstal Alps, connecting Upper Austria with Styria. The original, two-way traffic tunnel has been renovated and a second, new tunnel built alongside. Now part of the A9 Pyhrn motorway, it is used by around 18,000 vehicles each day. This impressive engineering feat is announced by new portal structures at both ends of the tunnel. The highly architectonic approach taken is unusual for projects of this kind, suggesting a new building typology celebrating transport infrastructure. A series of screens – made up of perforated Nordic Brass cassettes, profiled and arranged to reflect the verticality of the surroundings – partially conceal buildings and equipment essential to the tunnel’s operation and safety. The rhythms of the screens highlight the experience of travellers as they approach and drive straight through the building, via the dramatic ‘flying roof’ entrance and exit galleries, acting as transition spaces between inside and out. Nordic Brass was chosen for its long-life and durability, including resistance to road salt, following trials simulating the exposure of the material over 30 years. Along with three other Aurubis copper or copper alloy clad projects, Bosruck Tunnel has been shortlisted for the 2017 European
in Architecture Awards: Copper http://copperconcept.org/en/awards. All four shortlisted projects will also be featured on the Aurubis stand at the ‘100% Design’ event in London Olympia, 20-23 September. Nordic Brass – also available with a pre-weathered finish – is produced by Aurubis, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler. Other copper alloys include Nordic Bronze and the innovative Nordic Royal, an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving it a rich golden through-colour and making it very stable. The Aurubis architectural range also includes Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’ and Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper, offering lighter or darker shades of brown determined by the thickness of the oxide layer. Various Nordic Green, Nordic Blue and Nordic Turquoise factoryapplied patinas have also been developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. ALTRO ideal for £25 million Welsh Super School Award-winning Altro XpressLay™ safety flooring has been used throughout a £25 million secondary ‘super school’ in North Wales. At 4,500m2, it is the biggest ever Altro XpressLay installation in the North West.
As with most new-build school projects, cost and time were major factors in the construction of Rhyl High. Flooring company Linney Cooper — who were appointed by Willmott Dixon to install the flooring throughout the new school — were well aware of this. But even though Altro flooring had not originally been specified, Linney Cooper recommended switching to Altro XpressLay.
The new Rhyl High School has been funded by Denbighshire Council and the Welsh Government, and built by Willmott Dixon. It accommodates 1,200 students, and also provides a base for 45 students from a nearby community special school. The whole building was constructed to achieve a rating of “excellent” on the BREEAM scale.
Robert Goring, Senior Project Surveyor at Willmott Dixon, said: “We have been working with Linney Cooper for many years. Their expert knowledge of flooring led to a recommendation to change our specification to Altro XpressLay, which is a proven cost and time saving product. In addition, the flooring met the stringent criteria for safety, quality and design.”
James Sullivan, Linney Cooper Contracts Manager, said: “For the Rhyl High project, Altro XpressLay and its properties presented themselves as a better alternative flooring solution to the one specified, for many reasons. The substrate floor at the new school was a power-floated concrete that would take a great deal of preparation with diamond grinding and laying a dpm. But, crucially, Altro XpressLay can be laid without a dpm, because it can be put down straight onto a damp subfloor or a new concrete floor at up to 97% relative humidity. This means quick and easy installation without having to wait for the substrate to dry. “In addition, Altro Xpresslay can be laid without adhesive. There is no waiting for it to ‘cure’, we just lay, weld and walk on it the same day. There are no tacky areas, or having to plan installation in stages because of drying times. The flooring can be taken up and re-used elsewhere, and if we need to replace areas of damage or wear in the future, we can do so, very easily, with minimal disruption. There are no adhesive odours, either, which is perfect for sites such as schools.” James continued: “Altro XpressLay is not a short-term solution, it is a proven, groundbreaking flooring that holds as effectively as an Altro safety flooring installed using adhesive, and there are no rucks, no movement at all.” It offers the same guarantees and lifetime slip resistance of other Altro safety flooring. The floor can be removed easily, reused and is 100% recyclable at the end of its life. In addition to Altro XpressLay, Altro WhiterockTM White walling and Altro Stronghold™ 30 safety flooring were installed in the school kitchen. These products are often specified together as they deliver a proven combination of safety and hygiene in hard working environments.
Altro Whiterock White is the hygienic alternative to tiles that’s impact resistant, grout-free and easy to clean. Its smooth white surface and classic purity make it a timeless choice for any interior. Altro Stronghold 30 achieves Altro’s highest rating for slip resistance and is designed to minimise risk in wet and greasy conditions for the lifetime of the flooring. As well as helping to keep staff safe from slips, it also helps reduce their fatigue, thanks to its 3mm thickness which provides noise reduction and comfort underfoot. Linney Cooper installed the Altro Stronghold 30, while MI Contracts fitted the Altro Whiterock White.

Deceuninck’s New Grey Substrate Provides Perfect Alternative to Aluminium
Already the UK market leader in coloured PVC-U windows and doors, Deceuninck is launching its new grey substrate profile to the UK market this summer. Adding to the 26 colourways already available from stock, the new substrate is RAL 7021 (Black Grey) which will help service the growing demand for this architecturally popular colour. “Grey is a popular contemporary colour choice, especially in the commercial market,” comments Rob McGlennon of Deceuninck. “One in four windows in the UK are coloured, and the number is rising. By offering this new grey substrate we are reinforcing our position as leaders in the commercial and coloured window sectors. “The new profile option will be available across Deceuninck’s range of casement, tilt-and-turn and fully reversible windows, as well as for residential, French and patio doors. range of design possibilities offered by the StoVentec Glass system. The project architects used StoVentec glass panels to create an unusual and dramatic new appearance for the building, and transform it into a major new focal point for the Central 7th district in Vienna. The building was designed by the Architektur Steinbacher Thierrichter practice, who specified the StoVentec glass for the main façade. PAS1188 certificate is twice as nice for Watergate Flood Solutions Ltd
Golden days for the Steel Window Association It was back in 1967 during the "Summer of Love" that the Steel Window Association was born after a breakaway from the Metal Window Federation; now 50 years later, the group remains an absolutely vital tool for the UK's steel window industry which collectively upholds the association's constitution of establishing standards of quality and performance in collaboration with the British Standards Institution. In addition there were window frames from the small, medium and large range of universal window sections. Indeed, even 50 years ago, some manufacturers were employing the then recently-launched W20 range of profiles. This new and exciting range of twenty individual sections, hence the title W20, was the first series of steel window profiles that incorporated a weather-strip groove. These profiles could also accommodate a double-glazed unit which many considered at the time to be nothing more than a passing fad! As the years rolled by, the Steel Window Association modified the bead to allow larger glass units to be glazed into the W20 sections. I enquiry 112 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-112

ASTRASEAL COMMERCIAL USES REHAU GENEO FOR £1M LANDMARK BERKELEY HOMES PROJECT Astraseal Commercial completed the latest Waterfront phase of Berkeley Homes’ landmark Royal Arsenal Riverside development in Woolwich using windows and doors fabricated in the innovative REHAU GENEO 6 chamber fibre composite system.
Berkeley Homes switched to REHAU GENEO from the aluminium and timber composite systems which had been used on the earlier phases of the project because REHAU’s commercial team were able to work with Astraseal to convince them of the thermal, acoustic and security benefits of the Passivhaus certified and fully recyclable GENEO window system. The 86mm GENEO system is among the most energy efficient profile systems available - with Uw values from 1.1 W/m2K for low energy houses to 0.73 W/m2K for Passivhaus installations without the need for high
specification glazing. It also offers break-in protection up to resistance class 2 without reinforcement and class 3 with reinforcement, and sound insulation to class 5 without steel reinforcement. One of the key factors for Berkeley Homes was that the REHAU GENEO system has slim sightlines of just 115mm, replicating the look of aluminium and giving residents of the £440,000 - £750,000 apartments almost uninterrupted views of the Thames. It also has inherent strength because it is extruded using the RAUFIPRO® fibre reinforced composite material
which is similar to material used in aircraft construction and Formula 1 race cars. This means it could be used to fabricate windows and doors at Royal Arsenal Riverside with full height glazing up to 2.3m and full widths of up to 1.2m without the need for steel reinforcement. Specialist commercial fabricator Astraseal installed 660 windows and 124 doors on the project, as well as working on other elements which would not normally be contained within the window package in order to give the client a ‘one stop shop’ supplier solution. This included aluminium
cloaking of reveals, soffits and the underside of balconies. All of the window and doors were finished in smooth Anthracite Grey on the exterior and white on the interior to match the finish of the aluminium frames used on the earlier phases of the development.

Uninterupted views with Alumen’s Cor-Vision plus “Homeowners want to connect their indoor and outdoor spaces and Cor-Vision Plus is a significant step towards that. While its ultra-slim design is the headline feature, everything about it has been put together with practicality in mind. When the doors are closed they’ll see just 25mm of profile, everything else is glass. But when the doors are open, its innovative inlaid pocket frame means that there’s zero threshold – nothing to interrupt the flow from inside to outside. The rollers are in the frame, while the sashes have stainless steel reinforced channels. This makes operation incredibly smooth and easy, and enables heavier sashes. As result, sashes up to 400kg can be manually operated, while any sash up to 700kg can be motorised. This summer, established aluminium fabricator Alumen Ltd is launching a new product that’s set to revolutionise the aluminium sliding door market. Partnering with Spanish aluminium giants Cortizo, Alumen is one of the first fabricators to launch the Cor-Vision Plus sliding door to the UK market.
Alan Robinson, Alumen’s MD elaborates: “The new aluminium sliding door system has been designed to offer uninterrupted, expansive glass areas thanks to its incredibly slim sightlines. Its innovative inlaid frame design, coupled with ultra-slim sash profiles, means that the visible profile on an installed doorset is just 25mm. “Cor-Vision Plus offers industry-leading credentials across the board. It’s available with maximum sash sizes up to four metres width and height, with two, three of four sash options. Sashes can be fixed or sliding, on twin or triple tracks. It can handle double or triple glazed IGUs up to 54mm thick, allowing U-values of down to 0.9 and acoustic insulation of up to 43 dBA.
“The result is a stunning - although almost invisible architectural sliding door that can be used in apertures up to 16 metres wide by four metres high. But more importantly, it allows people to connect their indoor and outdoor spaces in a way that’s never been seen before.” For more information on Cor-Vision Plus call 01536 737 377 or visit www.alumen.co.uk

FROM ERA With smart technology becoming increasingly prevalent in the UK market, ERA has taken home security to the next level with a range of smartphone-connected, wireless Alarm systems. Offering a choice of five user-friendly models, ERA smart alarm kits benefit from a modular design, enabling builders and specifiers to create a comprehensive network of alarms to suit any home security project.
From the Valiant Solar Siren Alarm Kit – which offers a convenient smart security starter pack for smaller properties – to the impressive Invincible Dual Network Alarm System, the full range of ERA wireless alarm kits feature a simple ‘plug and play’ set up and include magnetic door/window sensors, as well as pet friendly motion sensors as standard, which can be easily fitted around the home. Marketing Manager, Tania Tams explained, “ The wireless design of our smart alarm kits is a real attraction for many installers and end users alike. Doing away with what can be quite a time-consuming installation process, most ERA alarm kits can be plugged into the mains and set up via the integrated control panel, making it easy to secure the home in just a few simple steps. “ Offering an attractive added extra sales option in cases of refurbishment and building works, the alarm kits have been specifically designed with builders and tradesmen in mind. Tania continues, “It is worth noting that ERA offers two
distinct ranges of Alarms. Whilst our consumer-facing miGuard collection is a popular product range for DIY retailers, our professional-standard Alarm kits offer a number of additional features and benefits to allow the tradesman to fit with confidence.” The company’s most advanced models, including the Vault and Invincible, come complete with RFID tags for rapid disarming and can be programmed to deliver automatic updates – including intruder, flood and smoke alerts – to a user’s smartphone via SMS. What’s more, ERA smart alarm kits feature the latest GSM technology, meaning that the home can be remotely controlled and monitored from anywhere in the world using the corresponding ERA Alarm App.

Easily installed for use as part of a wider smart security system, all ERA sirens can also be employed as stand-alone alarm systems, when connected to the company’s magnetic door/window sensors.
Thanks to their adaptable, modular design, ERA smart alarm kits can be extended to incorporate a range of accessories, including additional sensors, smoke and water detectors and even an IP HD security camera. Tania added, “With many of our smart alarm models able to support up to 50 additional sensors, a user can build upon their existing kit to create a versatile, all-encompassing alert system for the modern home.”
Whilst all ERA smart alarm kits feature an internal siren, users may wish to enhance their security system with an additional live or replica siren. A choice of mains-connected

Fast Access for Cyclists Encouraging the cycling ethos, TORMAX was specified to install two full-glass automatic sliding doors to the new Gravesend Cycle Hub, providing fast access for busy commuters looking to drop off their bikes before catching the train. The entrances are both powered by low-energy, TORMAX iMotion 2202 operators which are have a reputation for exceptional reliability in the long-term, even in a hectic location such as this. A million-pound development, the Cycle Hub is a gleaming new glass building situated next to Gravesend train station, housing more than 280 bikes in a safe, secure and dry location. TORMAX worked with Sealtite Windows Ltd and main contractor Walker Construction to deliver an access solution that minimises the risk of bottlenecks during rush hour at either end of the working day. One door allows bikes to be pushed in and out of the Hub, whilst the other is for pedestrians leaving or entering the facility.
Swiss-owned, TORMAX has been designing, manufacturing, installing and maintaining bespoke automatic entrance systems worldwide for over 60 years. The iMotion range of door operators is in-house designed and combines unique AC motor technology with a state-of-the-art microprocessor control system. Working in tandem, these guarantee permanent monitoring of door leaf movements, making automatic adjustments as necessary to deliver extraordinarily reliable operation.
With cost an important consideration for Kent County Council, this long operational lifespan lowers the total cost of ownership, allowing for more effective financial planning with reduced ongoing budgetary expenditure. iMotion operators also represent a sustainable solution too, with over 95% of the components being recyclable.

ASPEX launches innovative steel door system Aspex, one of the UK’s leading architectural ironmongery and door companies, has strengthened its presence in the market with the addition of an innovative steel door system to its existing Novista Riser range.
The Novista doorset system was originally developed in 2015 to meet the demands of architects looking for a minimalist aesthetic. Door frames are hidden resulting in walls that are uninterrupted as there is no need for obtrusive architrave. The original system had a timber door leaf, and whilst this is still available, the latest addition, Novista Steel Riser doors, launched in June 2017.
The Novista Steel Riser is suitable in locations, which require either a very high fire or acoustic rating. The steel risers are fire rated to FD120 and acoustic rated to 40dB. Traditional steel riser doorsets are often prefabricated, resulting in a very heavy product, which is cumbersome and difficult to install. Aspex has developed a simple onsite installation process, which is intuitive and requires no special skills. The steel door system – which has already been installed in the Ruskin Square office development in Croydon – can be adapted
to suit any project. It can be pre-painted to any RAL colour or primed to allow on-site painting for precise colour matching with the adjacent wall. Riser doors can be used for a wide range of applications including ducts, cupboards, and access to bathroom pods. In addition to riser doors, the Novista range also includes the Novista Doorsets, which feature an aluminium frame that can be mounted into a block or stud wall that is either single or double boarded. The doorsets are ideal for use in hotels as bathroom access doors or risers, and in commercial office buildings and apartments.
Ashley Burberry, Managing Director of Aspex UK, said: “The launch of our Novista Steel Riser marks an exciting time for the business as we continue to strengthen our Novista range. We’ve worked on some exciting projects over the last year and our new range is testament to our ambition and drive to continue to develop products in line with architectural demand. “We’re looking forward to working closely with our customers further to provide the highest quality design solutions.” I enquiry 523 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-523

Tunnels Beaches is a network of hand carved tunnels leading to sheltered beaches and a tidal Victorian bathing pool at Ilfracombe, the location of a breath-taking beach front wedding venue operated by Devon Beach Weddings. The bespoke building curving out of the rock means there are no concerns about the UK weather and whatever turn it takes it is all visible through curved bi-folding glazed doors – whether opened or closed. The owner had the idea to refurbish and at the same time to extend the upper story of the curved building by 2 metres, installing curved bi-folding glazed doors and thereby increasing capacity from 130 guests to 160. With a full house for weddings in 2017, (120+ weddings booked), over 100 weddings already booked for 2018 and prime dates in 2019 booking fast, the extension was a must.
New generation energy efficient steel windows from West Leigh Ideal for new build and renovation projects, where energy efficiency and
Awlwood Joinery already had a good relationship with the owners Jamie and Zoe McLintock having worked with them at the Tunnels Beaches Bath House – an old Victorian bath house – which was turned in to wedding accommodation for the venues guests, so when the scheme was mooted to install curving bi-folding doors the McLintock’s turned to David Wray at Awlwood Joinery. “It wasn’t anything we had done before but we are skilled guys and the concept is not beyond the reach of man – after all we can send men to the moon – so we undertook the commission. The architect, RGP of Barnstaple, came up with a scheme and we did as they instructed – but with fewer doors (two sets, opening out). The design included wood cladding and lots of steel.
Debuted at the FIT Show 2017, VEKA Group’s brand new Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is the latest addition to its luxurious, innovative and technically advanced Imagine suite of doors. Designed to ‘let nature into your living space’, the system can incorporate between two and four sashes;

Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock system launched last year has been joined by Brio’s 288 Lever Furniture to give joiners a deluxe option to offer their customers who now, more than ever, are looking for aesthetics as well as practicality. Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock is suitable for Brio’s tough exterior folding system Weatherfold 4s with timber or aluminium panels and for single hinge panels, such as French doors, up to 3.5 metres high, offering an alternative to the standard flushbolts. It is both ultra secure and aesthetically pleasing. Rather than having the standard flushbolt at the top and the bottom of the door system on the inside of the property the end user can now choose a
According to David Newton, General Manager UK at Brio, the demand for bifolding and sliding exterior and interior doors is set to continue apace, with a variety of aesthetic demands from delicate ‘floating’ glass systems to commercial style projects such as this example in North Devon. “What this means in practice is that Brio, with its range of product and flexible attitude, will continue to keep pace with the architect’s need for innovative product that can transform anything they design on paper into reality,” he says.
“I am also impressed with Brio R&D – they are always coming up with new ideas and fixes. Best on the market. The solutions are effective and the Brio representatives are helpful and thoughtful – that’s a one-off!”

“We opted for the Brio Weatherfold 4s system after talking to Bob Harrison at Hebden & Holding architectural ironmonger and the Brio team which takes panels up to 1 metre wide. The decision was led by the architect’ plans and the constraints of the timber as you cannot have huge pieces of curved timber so we had to make up the doors from smaller pieces that would eventually be bolted together on site. The actual frame was put together by the owner’s site carpenters.” David Wray says: “I am very pleased with aesthetics are key, the new W50 TB steel window offers narrow sight lines and a Uvalue as low as 1.4 W/m2K, depending on the glazing unit employed. The use of the system has been pioneered in the UK by West Leigh (www.west-leigh.co.uk), working closely with Swiss designer and supplier, Ottostumm. It is based on highly engineered, thermally broken steel sections designed to closely replicate the character of the traditional W20 steel window. The design of the thermally broken profile means that W50 TB steel windows are manufactured differently from traditional solid, hot rolled steel section windows. With this in mind, West Leigh, a member of the Steel Window Association, developed new window manufacturing techniques and appropriate paint applications. In the twelve months since launching the W50 TB profile, the company has successfully employed it to fulfill over £1 million of supply and install orders. I enquiry 114 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-114

And, thanks to its safe and secure construction – utilising extra large steel reinforcements within the profile – the Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is strong enough to easily handle both residential and commercial applications. Reynaers sliding doors give more than meets the eye The key performance features of the CP 130 sliding door from leading aluminium systems company Reynaers extend far beyond its stunning exterior. At first glance, one brand of sliding door may appear similar to the next, but looks can be deceiving. Up close, the superior quality of Reynaers’ systems is evident, with an industry-leading maximum glass size of 2.7m in height. The slimline aluminium frames can also support glass up to 43mm in thickness and 300kg in weight. These huge panes of glass command panoramic, uninterrupted views that welcome natural light into the home. By choosing a special corner solution, it is possible to open up the space without any fixed corner element for a complete removal of barriers between internal and external spaces. Not only this, but the ease of operation takes the CP 130 one step further for homeowners. Reynaers’ lift-and-slide solution has a longer handle which, when turned through 180°, lifts the door slightly, reducing the friction and allowing the door to open and close with the lightest of touches.

The premier hot melt system for high performance green roofs, podiums and highly detailed waterproofing schemes is Alumasc’s Hydrotech, which protects prestigious buildings such as the Eiffel Tower, Canary Wharf and the Cheese Grater and has been used world-wide for over 50 years without a single product failure. When it comes to large-scale new build projects, to ensure a building’s longevity and risk-free future, the structural waterproofing must be the highest standard, expertly installed and come with great on-site support. To achieve this aesthetic look, the integrity of the rooftops needed to be maintained, and the design did not allow for any roof protrusions to interrupt the flow of the roofline. The project’s MEP contractor, Gemmo SpA, recognising that input from an expert in drainage ventilation was needed, asked Studor (with over 40 years’ experience in the field) to advise on the drainage system design. Specifying for sustainability, Downs Merrifield chose Ecopro Matt Emulsion for this new build home. Here, white walls pick up a warm glow from the timber stairs, doors and flooring. (Photo courtesy: Rob Boltman Photography and Downs Merrifield architects).
We all have a responsibility to the environment. Many architects and builders are responding to that by recycling and upcycling whenever possible. But what else can be done to minimise the environmental impact of a project? Colin Jones, Technical Sales Advisor at Earthborn, has a suggestion. Look at the wall in front of you. The answer is probably staring you in the face. Paint. Paint features in just about every design project, but how often do you consider its properties beyond colour and performance? What about its environmental credentials and sustainability? Harmful ingredients: Conventional, acrylic based paints contain two potentially harmful components: volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and acrylic softeners. Both escape into the atmosphere during painting and for many years after application, contributing to greenhouse gases. These toxic ingredients can also find their way into drains and groundwater when washing out brushes and disposing of paint tins in landfill. As well as being harmful to the environment, they can cause chest complaints, aggravate allergies and cause sick building syndrome.
paints, but they are found to varying degrees even in water based paints. The EU limit for paints to be classed as minimal VOC is 30g/L. However, this is relatively high compared to the value that environmentalists recommend and which can be found among a new breed of environmentally friendly paints. It is advisable to seek out those containing a maximum of just 0.5g/L VOC. The easiest way to ensure you’re creating a sustainable, environmentally sound specification is to check the paint is EU Ecolabel approved. This stringent standard covers every aspect of a product's manufacture, use and disposal. Earthborn paints have achieved this demanding standard. Made without oils or acrylics, they are virtually VOC free and highly breathable. That means they do not give off any toxic emissions, so are much better for the environment as well as the health of building occupants. The breathability means moisture can permeate out through the paint, preventing damage to walls and significantly reducing their
maintenance lifecycle. Aesthetics and performance: You do not need to sacrifice quality or aesthetics for environmental benefits. Carefully selected ingredients and technologically advanced manufacturing processes create stylish, high performance products that are safer to use and sound for the environment. Claypaint, for example, is a unique, clay based emulsion that is highly breathable, covers exceptionally well and gives a distinctive, ultra matt finish. More commonly used on plastered walls, it works equally well on timber substrates. Ecopro Matt Emulsion, Lo Sheen Emulsion and Eggshell are now all available in all 98 shades of BS4800, plus black and white - and are all made in the UK. The new palette offers a huge choice and enables colour matching with other decorating features. The Ecopro range is uniquely formulated for high performance and all three products are totally oil and acrylic free, with minimal VOCs. Ecopro Emulsions are water-based,
low odour, environmentally sound alternatives to conventional wall and ceiling emulsions. The Matt option is particularly suitable for use on new plaster, while Lo Sheen is formulated for enhanced durability and washability, making it suitable for higher traffic areas. Eggshell - the newest addition to the range - is suitable for use on interior walls, ceilings and woodwork. It’s a complete all-rounder. It dries to an attractive sheen that is durable, washable and scuff resistant. Complying with the strict EU Ecolabel standards, Earthborn's Ecopro range is not only eco friendly but newly decorated rooms can be brought back into use quickly because the paints do not give off any harmful emissions or odours. Available in 24 shades, Ecopro Silicate Masonry Paint is a highly durable and highly breathable alternative to conventional masonry paints and limewash. It can be used on any porous mineral surface, such as brick, stone, concrete, render and limewash. It is especially suitable for renovations. The Ecopro silicate system from Earthborn is water based, oil and acrylic free, making it minimal VOC and very environmentally friendly. It gives the same breathability as limewash but is far superior in terms of longevity and ease of use.

Knauf ProRoll is available in two variants, Knauf ProRoll Light and Knauf ProRoll Max. Knauf ProRoll Light can be applied in coats of 1mm to a maximum of 3mm using multiple coats, providing a fine finish when applied over gypsum boards, sand stone blocks and other smooth surfaces. Conversely, Knauf ProRoll Max is a surface-levelling compound that is ideal for the preparation of irregular and uneven surfaces prior to a final finishing with Knauf ProRoll Light. Highly versatile and adaptable to a number of decorating scenarios, ProRoll Max is an ideal solution for surface levelling, with up to 4mm possible in multiple coats. Festool presents three new cordless sanders - RTSC 400, DTSC 400 and ETSC The sanding performance you would expect from a mains-powered tool: Festool presents three new cordless sanders – RTSC400, DTSC400 and ETSC125 Cordless but with maximum material removal and surface quality: Festool is "pulling the plug" and launching three new cordless sanders – in addition to the RTS, DTS and ETS corded compact sanders. Say hello to the battery-powered surface specialists: RTSC 400, DTSC 400 and ETSC 125. No heavy cable reels, no tedious searching for sockets, no messy cabling: Simply unpack and start sanding – this is the motto for the new RTSC, ETSC and DTSC cordless sanders from Festool. These three newcomers signal a paradigm shift in the cordless sander segment. Whereas previous tools have been somewhat unwieldy and heavy, the new cordless sanders impress thanks to their counterbalanced handling and outstanding ergonomics, while still maintaining remarkable endurance and high power reserves. "It was particularly important for us that, despite being battery-powered, the material removal rate would not come up short," states Patrick Hitzer, Product Manager for Sanders and Abrasives at Festool, adding: "Traditionally, our customers have high expectations of our sanders. When developing the new cordless sanders, we placed the customer and their requirements firmly at the centre of our focus. Right from the development process, we worked very intensively with selected test customers and incorporated their feedback directly into our work. The result is that we can
meet the needs of our professional users in full."
Power meets endurance and perfect handling The list of things users require from cordless sanders is long: Lightweight and counterbalanced, powerful yet long-lasting, outstanding handling while delivering the perfect sanding result all the while. The new BP 18 Li 3.1 ERGO battery pack plays a crucial role in meeting these requirements. It was specially developed by Festool for its new cordless sanders and has been elegantly integrated into the handle.
Uninterrupted sanding – cordless Another big advantage of the cordless sanders is that their charging time is shorter than their running time. The BP 18 3.1 Li ERGO battery pack is back to full charge again in under half an hour – and the average battery life is significantly longer than 30 minutes. If the battery being used is drained, it can quickly be replaced with the fully charged replacement battery. The highlight: The Set and Plus versions come delivered with two batteries – so nothing stands in the way of a quick battery change and uninterrupted, cable-free sanding any longer.
Full power – low weight In combination with the brushless EC-TEC motor, the three compact cordless sanders deliver a performance that you would expect from a mainspowered tool. This is also reflected in the technical data: Thanks to a speed of 6000 to 10,000 rpm and a sanding stroke of 2 millimetres, not only can the sanding power be variably adjusted to suit the surface being machined, but work can also progress extremely quickly. Added to this is the low weight: The cordless sanders themselves weigh just 1 kilogram and, with the plug-in longlife dust bag and battery attached, they still only weigh 1.5 kilograms. This makes them perfect for working above head height and in difficult-to-reach places. Thanks to the long-life dust bag combined with the integral extraction system, the new cordless sanders can clearly demonstrate their
Cordless or corded? Thanks to the mains adapter, the sanders can be operated without a long-life dust bag but with a mobile dust extractor, including autostart function and suction hose, using power from mains. Simply plug in the plug-it mains adapter instead of the BP 18 3.1 Li ERGO battery pack and connect it to the mobile dust extractor. I enquiry 538 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-538

Bahco introduces non-rusting, stainless steel screwdrivers
Using advanced cryogenic technology, Bahco designers have created a range of stainless steel screwdrivers which is now being introduced to the UK market. Non-rusting stainless steel, renowned for hygienic qualities and ease of cleaning, is widely used in food manufacturing, hospitality
and medical business sectors, also in aerospace and automotive engineering. Its resistance to weather conditions, corrosion and antacids make it suitable for use within the oil and gas industry, including offshore. The development of the new screwdrivers is timely, as demand for stainless steel screws has risen by almost 70 per cent over recent years. Stainless steel doesn’t rust. However, if conventional steel tools are used on stainless steel screws the wear debris can adhere to the surface and, when exposed to oxygen, they do begin to rust. This creates a threat to safety if left untreated but it can be averted by using stainless steel screwdrivers.
Until now, stainless steel hard enough for industrial applications has been too brittle for everyday use. Bahco designers and engineers have overcome this by using icehardening cryogenic technology, giving their stainless steel hand tools superb hardness and durability. “This development is further evidence of Bahco’s market leading innovation,” says Mark Haywood, who leads the Bahco team in the UK. Bahco stainless steel screwdrivers are now available with a choice of slotted, Phillips®, Pozidriv® and Torx® heads. I enquiry 542 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-542

Polypipe provides shallow water attenuation solution for Portsmouth’s latest transport hub
Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of sustainable drainage and water management systems, has supplied a Permavoid engineered shallow water treatment and attenuation solution for Portsmouth City Council’s new transport interchange at The Hard. The interchange, close to the world-famous Historic Dockyard, aims to meet modern transport requirements by providing an efficient and visually pleasing site at which bus, train, and boat services come together. Built on a concrete deck directly above sea level with very shallow cover, the interchange required a compact design solution that could provide a water treatment and management solution at a location with restricted space to build. Working alongside the sustainable drainage design consultant Environmental Protection Group (EPG), Polypipe advised on the design of a system for Consultant Engineer RoC Consulting, using a range of components from the Permavoid system that proved ideal for the demands of the site. The solution offered the strength and adaptability required to meet the water attenuation and treatment needs of a busy transportation interchange, located on a challenging geographical site. Polypipe worked with Osborne and EPG to come up with a cost and programme saving to install this innovative alternative to the original design.
Polypipe Web: www.polypipe.com Tel: 01709 770000 I enquiry 549 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-549
The final design saw the installation of 12 Permavoid tanks across the site, which were laid under the pedestrian areas to address the lack of cover for bus loadings, with only 130mm cover above the tanks. The Permavoid cells boast a 95% void fill ratio and incorporate a jointing mechanism to form an interlocking raft of exceptional strength. 510 Permavoid cells were used in conjunction with a 147m of Permachannel linear channel treatment system and 296 Permavoid Biomat geocellular units for surface water treatment, installed by main contractor Osborne to capture, treat, and attenuate surface water run-off from the bus station’s surface.
The surface water run-off passes under the high Kassell kerbs used across the site, and is sent through a Permaceptor unit, which allows for the treatment of oils and silts. Water then enters one of 12 Permavoid tanks giving a total of 30m3 gross storage. Once the treated water makes its way to the Permavoid tanks, deck penetrations allow it to be discharged directly into the sea at Portsmouth Harbour. The ability of the Permavoid design to treat water at source avoided the need to drill through the nearby sea wall and install a deep petrol interceptor to treat and return water, as was originally specified. This provided significant project savings on installation time, and approximately £200,000 on costs, and it is a system Osborne wants to use again. Rosie Cheetham, Marketing Consultant at Polypipe, said: “We are delighted to have been able to provide a custom designed attenuation and treatment solution for a site that is of such importance to the city of Portsmouth. The Permavoid system was perfectly suited to tackle the challenges presented by the shallow cover of the site, and to make use of the depot’s proximity to the harbour. “This project really showcases the adaptability and efficiency of the Permavoid system and the time and cost savings it can achieve for our clients.” RoC consulting engineers were civil and structural engineers for the project and Andy Rain Civil Engineering Director said: “Polypipe supplied an innovative, modern solution to allow the delivery of a complex design that overcame some unusual geographical features, including proximity to the sea. Using Permavoid allowed the vision of the first phase regeneration of The Hard to be realised, with the transport hub – a new gateway to Portsmouth.”

Helifix Dixie micropiles support award winning Chelsea garden
Hospital crossing sealed with safety in mind The Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital have successfully sealed their pedestrian crossings following the installation of Resiblock Ultra Matt. Ten separate crossings, which make up the key pedestrian routes at the Newcastle Hospital, have been sealed to prevent paver destabilisation from a variety of vehicles including cars, ambulances, mini-buses and HGV vehicles. Following discussions between Resiblock and client Healthcare Services Ltd, the specialist pre-polymer urethane (SPPU) Resiblock Ultra Matt was selected as this could seal both the Marshall White Marker Blocks and the Weinberger Clay Blocks that were on-site. This now is the second major hospital that has utilised Resiblock products following the success of Resiblock at Portland Hospital – The UKs largest private women and children’s hospital.
Best Show Garden at the 2017 Chelsea Flower Show was awarded to the M&G Garden, for which Helifix supplied some unseen, but critical, components. The garden featured monumental blocks of limestone of varying sizes and the two largest stone clad steel towers, at 8m and 5m high, required temporary foundation support. The Royal Horticultural Society does not allow any permanent excavations to be carried out and tree roots had to be avoided while whatever means of support was used had to be removed once the show was over. The ideal solution, overcoming all these potential problems, was provided by Helifix Dixie micro-piles, a technically innovative proprietary system certified by the International Code Council (ICC). Bell Flow Systems were recently approach by a customer who was having a problem with their existing meter installation. The customer had previously installed a geared flow meter for their application but due to the suspended particles in the water, the meter kept
jamming and causing the meter to cease. This in turn caused problems further up the line. The customer’s application was for silty and sandy water from borehole testing. For the majority of the time, the water was clean but occasionally there would be silt and sand in the water, and this was where the issue arose with the existing meter jamming. For this reason, Bell Flow Systems thought the best option was to quote an accurate meter with no moving parts. A Badger Meter M1000 mag flow meter was best suited as it featured no moving parts and would measure the clean water, and no damage would be caused to the meter by occasional sand or silt in the water. RECYFIX® MONOTEC drains outdoor surfaces at Ysgol Gynradd Lôn Las School, Swansea
The Ysgol Gynradd Lôn Las Primary School, Swansea, has currently 535 pupils from Year 1 to 6 as well as Reception and Nursery Classes. The school site is split into 4 main areas. Having a large gymnasium and a separate school canteen there are plenty of outdoor playing areas including a hard surface yard, an enclosed area for Nursery and expansive areas of grassland. Hauraton Limited introduced the RECYFIX® MONOTEC, surface drainage system in January 2016.The Lôn Las school, joins numerous installations successfully completed in the United Kingdom. The RECYFIX® MONOTEC system was installed to provide surface drainage in the paved entrance/play areas and the car park’s asphalt surface. Having a grating width of 100mm (Channel internal dimension) with an overall height of 280mm and a crosssection of 245.5cm2, the 176 metres of channel supplied provide a total water capacity of just over 4329 litres. The MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue
and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained. Cat Jones, Hauraton‘s Project Manager for the South West comments; “The RECYFIX MONOTEC channel HEELSAFE slot grating was originally designed to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are
super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. The smooth grating and tough nature of the channel, up to load category of Class D400, made the system ideal for the non-trafficked areas such as the entrance area and school play yard as well as staff care parks and access roads. I was particularly please the site contractor Dawnus Construction found these channels easy to handle on site. As each channel component only weighed 8.63kg, this feature eliminated the need for mechanical lifting gear”. Shaun Davies the Site Agent for the Contractor also observed,” I was very impressed with the durability of the MONOTEC channels. Not a single unit was damaged by site traffic or whilst laying the asphalt. Any queries or information required was easily and quickly obtained from Hauraton’s technical support team. All Hauraton surface water drainage systems’ comply with European Standards (hENs) and carries the CE mark”. For RECYFIX® MONOTEC product specifications go to www.hauraton.co.uk. CIVILS section

Pegler Yorkshire, the leading UK manufacturer of VSH XPress fittings has expanded its range of tools to meet the demands of the marketplace. The XPress Press Power Tools range offers a variety of tooling to support press-fit installations from 12mm to 168.3mm and sprinkler systems. In addition, the range includes the popular combined package of AC0203 with 15-35mm jaws in a single case. Amy Sedgwick, Pegler Yorkshire’s Market Manager for Press Systems, commented: “With over half the work carried out by heating engineers and contractors being on ‘live’ sites, press-fit jointing has become the preferred choice because of its safety credentials and ease of installation. With that in mind it was a natural progression to provide our customers with not only the best press-fit fittings on the market but the full range of tools to complete the job too.”
State-of-the art teaching buildings at the University of Northampton’s new £330m Waterside Campus development have been designed utilising REHAU’s innovative TABS system, providing energy efficiency and low cost heating and cooling. Construction work started in 2016 on the aspirational Waterside Campus, which will transform a 58-acre brownfield site along the River Nene into a hub for teaching and student accommodation, as well as leisure and retail facilities for the University and wider community. The whole project is set to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating upon completion in 2018, so every aspect of the design plans has been carefully considered to ensure it adheres to the principles of sustainable design. the floor. This type of heating uses water at a lower temperature than standard radiators which helps to reduce heating costs. Electric systems feature a cable which is evenly spread across the floor and is concealed within the floor structure. This is then linked to a thermostat and mains power supply. With underfloor heating, heat rises steadily and ensures an even heat flow across the whole room with no overheating which ensures running costs are kept to a minimum. Gaia's underfloor heating systems are hidden under the floor allowing the consumer to utilise every square metre in their home as radiators no longer have to be considered. Underfloor heating also requires a much lower surface temperature to heat a room; which is not only energyefficient but also financially efficient. I enquiry 139 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-139

There is also an established range of award winning condensing heavy duty condensing internal and external water heaters which give an energy performance of 107% net efficiency while the larger HDC1500 internal and external models have 105% net efficiency. Rinnai Infinity condensing units also exceed all the demands of
Part L Building Regulations. Rinnai units can be used as a gas booster to solar thermal or heat pump installations maximizing renewable heat gains. It is the only booster that ensures a hot shower or bath any time of the day or night. The rest of the time the gas fired unit is inactive minimizing energy usage. For commercial buildings, Rinnai’s development and investment in integral smart controls for its appliances enable smart integration with sophisticated BMS systems allowing multi data monitoring which in turn identifies areas where energy, service and breakdown efficiencies can be improved. Rinnai also fields a common header flue system to streamline manifolded installations of its award-winning Infinity condensing units. And another simple but effective idea which safeguards against lime scale build up occurring in Rinnai continuous flow water heaters is a scale control system that continually monitors the appliances for lime scale deposits around the heat exchanger. Rinnai also offer the Infinity Solo water heater, the first Rinnai product for the UK which combines the advanced technology of its wall mounted water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one. And it boasts very low heat loss figures. www.rinnaiuk.com I enquiry 559 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-559

SERIES MH BALANCING VALVE ASSISTS IN EFFICIENT UNDERFLOOR HEATING SYSTEMS A revolutionary dynamic balancing valve will eradicate common issues experienced in Underfloor Heating systems when it is launched in the UK.
The manifold which can be specified as part of a new build project, or successfully retro-fitted, as part of an entire underfloor heating system allows the flow rate in each circuit to remain constant. This will stop the fluctuation experienced in other manifolds where changes in demand require constant balancing of the individual loops which often consist of differences in length and diameter giving different flow and pressures resulting in a fluctuating unbalanced system. Series MH displays the actual flow on the flow meters integrated in the manifold. Hydraulic balancing of the system takes just three easy and time efficient steps and can be carried out during the commissioning of the system. I enquiry 563 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-563
Set to revolutionise balancing issues experienced in multi residential or multi room applications, the Series MH underfloor heating manifold from Watts UK will simplify hydraulic balancing and flow control in radiant heating systems delivering energy savings and comfort for users. “This product has been developed to eliminate issues which have been prohibitive to the efficiencies of underfloor heating
systems, particularly those that are in multi room or multi residential settings,” said Dave Raynor Product Manager Watts Water Technologies UK. “In situations where variances in temperature, performance or pressure have been experienced this heating manifold will give specifiers and installers greater control over commissioning and ongoing maintenance through its simple controls.”
“Drawing on our extensive product knowledge, this new manifold will deliver greater efficiencies for underfloor heating systems and improve performance and consistency and more simplistic commissioning,” said Dave. “Once the system is operational Series MH will maintain constant pressure in the manifold to deliver a constant flow rate in each heating loop delivering energy saving benefits and optimum temperature distribution.”

For degree course students these changes may have an unnerving experience, therefore the University needed to ensure that the new temporary music rooms could maintain a constant environment.
As a leading chiller hire specialist, Andrews Sykes has a broad knowledge and considerable experience in providing solutions that will reduce and stabilise temperatures. It also operates with one of the large ranges of chillers which ensures it can cope with any situations and with a nation-wide network of depots a solutions is always close at hand.. When contacted by the SE England University a same-day site survey was conducted and it was decided that the Andrews 50kW chiller and a number air handling units would create the perfect temperature controlled environment. The units were commissioned for use within hours of arrival on site, allowing the
The Andrews 50kW fluid air chiller circulates chilled water to each of the air handling units. Warm air from the music rooms is drawn into the lower portion of the air handling units, then passes over the ‘cold’ coils resulting in a drop in temperature, the cooler air is then gently blown back into room from the top vents. Since temperature change will depend on air flow, air temperature and humidity, the Andrews Chiller solutions had to adjust automatically to these variants. The campus maintenance team and lectures alike where delighted with the results achieved by Andrews Chiller Hire, it created the perfect temporary cooling solution that ran through-out the length of renovation works. It gave the University effective climate control, enabling all music courses to continue without any disruption.

KENSA HEAT PUMPS July 2017 View our publication online at www. mcdermottpublishing.com
Acorn Blue and Kensa Heat Pumps build sustainable luxury coastal community
(RHI). It is expected that the RHI income for The Dunes will more than offset the cost of the system. David Stein, Acorn Blue Pre-Construction Director, comments: “Aside from the inherent advantages associated with the adoption of renewable energy in respect of improved SAP rating, lower carbon footprint, RHI payback and generally ‘feeling good’, ‘The Dunes’ was a natural candidate for ground source heat pumps. There is no natural gas in the area and the geology is known to be highly suited to GSHP’s. Furthermore, by adopting Kensa’s Shoebox and micro-district design we realised we could eliminate any centralised plant, thereby increasing sales area and at the same time offer direct individual control and metering of their heat source to individual purchasers.”
A landmark luxury housing development comprising forty apartments and houses currently under construction amongst the famous dunes of Perranporth beach in Cornwall is using pioneering architecture and sustainable development to breathe new life into a former derelict hotel site. “The Dunes”, set for completion in June 2018 by developers Acorn Blue, has completed the groundworks stage for Kensa’s Shoebox ground source heat pumps, which will be sited inside each of the dwellings to provide 100% of the two apartment blocks, five coach houses and four beach houses heating and hot water. Utilising local companies and ground source heat pumps manufactured by Kensa Heat Pumps just 10 miles from the former hotel site, the development has sustainability and community at its heart. Simon Lomax, Kensa Heat Pumps Managing Director, comments: “Given its spectacular location alongside one of Cornwall’s premier beaches, we applaud Acorn Blue’s pioneering decision to specify ultra-low carbon heating systems for ‘The Dunes’. Investing in ground source heat pump systems will
ensure the lucky purchasers benefit not only from the lowest possible running costs but also a technology which is remarkably reliable and durable. Best of all, this renewable installation is entirely unobtrusive so there is no visual intrusion on such a stunning setting.” The ground source heat pump system features communal boreholes dug in the periphery of the site, six metres from the edge of the dunes, to depths up to 130m; in total 3km of borehole pipework has been installed. The communal system, based on Kensa’s award-winning micro-ground source heat network design, sees five district arrays consisting of 19 boreholes in total; on one array 17 individual apartments will be provided heat to their own individual Kensa Shoebox heat pump from one double-probe borehole. The micro-ground source heat network approach qualifies ‘The Dunes’ project for 20 years of income via the Government’s Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive
The individual Kensa ‘Shoebox’ ground source heat pump located within each property overcomes traditional setbacks of plant room designs and is exempt from the Heat Network (Metering and Billing) Regulations, and unlike traditional district heating schemes provides complete heating and hot water control to the homeowners, offering individual bills and freedom to switch suppliers. The Shoebox heat pump offers simple installation from both a mechanical and electrical standpoint. Kensa Heat Pumps will working alongside Acorn Blue’s M&E contractor to install the ground source heat pump unit’s and ensure compliance with the Microgeneration Certification Standards (MCS). Each dwelling is to be fitted with ‘Heatmiser’ thermostats, which will talk to smart phone controls. Individual heat and electric meters will email daily heat and electric consumption data to Acorn Blue, enabling performance monitoring and compliance with RHI requirements. SIZE MATTERS Get the right size hot water heating unit & system to fit the site - RINNAI might need a stored hot water facility - but this is very expensive - its rather like keeping a car's engine running just in case you want to drive it. It is as simple as that," says Rinnai head of Operations, Chris Goggin.
New from Rinnai, the UK's leader in continuous flow hot water heating, is a Site Sizing Service designed to give the right amount of hot water delivery to meet existing and planned needs. The new service initiative from Rinnai available over email, iPhone and site visit - is to give contractors and users the right mix of products and system which fit the needs of the site, rather than a 'one size fits all approach' seen with traditional hot water heating systems.
He adds, "We are inviting contractors, designers, installers, end-users and consultants to contact us in person to discuss their new installations so that we can recommend the right system specific to the site. Our product can cope with virtually any size of commercial site - hotels, hospitals, schools, office blocks and larger residential properties and we have proven systems configured to cope with the biggest commercial premises - right through to Government departments such as the Welsh Office or 350 plus bed hotels. The complete, bespoke and personalised system is designed for the specific need of the site or user and we have a proven record of adding significant value to our customers.
"Every site is different, as all installers know, and the tradition of oversizing a system 'just in case' is a very costly way for a site to have hot water on demand. The very basis of our product concept is that the end-user only pays for the fuel to heat the hot water at the point of use. There are very few sites that

The Rinnai HD50i internal water heater and HD70e external water heater offer greater flexibility at the design stage and can offer an alternative solution where flue runs are problematic or internal space is not available. They are excellent units for refurbishment projects. Using a modular system of either internal or external Rinnai HD or HDC condensing water heaters and a stainless steel storage vessel, demands in excess of 20,000 litres per hour can be satisfied. Rinnai Infinity Plus Storage packs are delivered direct to site in one complete package. Rinnai units are 'renewables ready' when used as a gas booster to solar thermal or heat pump installations in maximizing renewable heat gains. It is the only booster that ensures a hot shower or bath any time of the day or night. The rest of the time the gas fired unit is inactive minimizing energy usage. Rinnai’s development and investment in integral smart controls for its appliances enable smart integration with sophisticated BMS systems allowing multi data monitoring which in turn identifies areas where energy, service and breakdown efficiencies can be improved. Each digital remote controller can be individually programmed, to deliver temperature accurate hot water for washing and cleaning however the water heater can
only deliver one set temperature at any time. Remote temperature controllers cannot override the master temperature setting made with the DIP switches within the heater ensuring safety. Controllers can also deliver basic fault diagnosis. Rinnai also fields a common header flue system to streamline manifolded installations of its award-winning Infinity condensing units. RELCROSS July 2017 View our publication online at www. mcdermottpublishing.com
The Best of Both Worlds - The Advantages of Steel Toilet Cubicles Whether we realise it or not, most of us will be influenced in our opinions of a school, leisure centre, restaurant or indeed any organisation we visit, by the state of its washrooms. A company may have beautiful offices, superb interior design and a very upmarket corporate image - but if the washrooms are tatty, damaged and unkempt what do their own staff think, let alone visitors? At least this is now well recognised and there have been great advances in the quality of washroom designs in recent years. However, all too often there is still a perceived trade off between aesthetics and durability. The accepted wisdom used to be that for high usage installations, or if you just want to stop the vandals, use steel cubicles - even if they do look institutional!
Oaks Restaurant Industrial Galvannealed Finish
Violet L 4007 Purple/ A R re at he T Putney Arts
That is no longer the right approach. In fairness, modern plastics, laminates and phenolics can be surprising durable although it is true that nothing really matches the ultimate durability of steel. But how do you make a steel cubicle that looks even better than its supposedly more stylish rivals and give customers the best of both worlds? On the other side of the Atlantic they are a bit ahead of us in this respect. Canadian manufacturer Hadrian developed a steel toilet cubicle that won’t break, warp, flake, corrode or chip and is highly dent resistant. It has good sound insulation and is light enough to be installed by one person. It is called the Hadrian Elite Steel Toilet Cubicle and has been marketed in the UK by Relcross for many years now. Steel is very tough but it’s heavy. It would be no good having the most robust design available if the weight was prohibitive both in use and installation. Hadrian solved this by introducing a honeycomb core that is laminated to the steel envelope under pressure. The result is a remarkably light cubicle that can be installed easily by just one person and yet is one of the toughest available. The honeycomb also provides great sound absorption and, together with the sound deadening strip on the continuous stop, helps to eliminate that cell door ‘clang’ associated with many steel cubicles.
Shake Shack’s Stainless Steel Cubicles
emy n at The Steiner Acad RAL 6018 Yellow/Gree
Having sorted out the main construction using the well recognised advantages of steel to best effect, they then set about adding design flair and a degree of practicality unheard of in a steel cubicle. A standard choice of 26 powder coating colours and anti graffiti textures was added, in addition to ‘plain’ or embossed stainless steel. But if that is not enough they will match any RAL colour. This choice has been exploited by a number of customers to achieve their design vision without compromise. The Steiner Academy in Herefordshire chose striking RAL 6018 Yellow/Green for a bright, dramatic colour that projected their environmental interests. Sustainability was also a vital aspect of the
specifying philosophy and the School was impressed with Hadrian’s green credentials. Hadrian was the first in the industry to embrace environmentally friendly powder coating technology and the steel used contains a high percentage of re-cycled material. The Putney Arts Theatre, not surprisingly, also went for a dramatic colour impact. In their case it was RAL 4007 Purple/Violet which blended perfectly with the rest of the decor. They had searched quite extensively to find a supplier that could deliver the colour scheme they had chosen, rather than just the nearest attempt. The American fast food chain Shake Shack was already familiar with Hadrian in the USA and so they sought out the UK distributor for their first UK outlet in London’s Covent Garden. They now have 7 locations in this country fitted with the full stainless steel finish which has a wow factor all of its own. Finally, the PPHE Hotel Group is known for operating brands that offer quality with an individual style and that’s definitely true of the washrooms attached to Oaks Restaurant and Bar in Nottingham. Reviews on Tripadvisor have likened them to a Butcher’s cold storage room (without the cold, thankfully) with “Freezer” style doors and Hadrian unpainted galvannealed steel cubicles. Steel clad walls and stainless steel sink troughs complete the fittings along with bare industrial light bulbs. These examples all show that there need not be a compromise between style and performance when it comes to toilet cubicles. It is perfectly possible to install washrooms that enhance rather than detract from the image of the organisation they serve - and without a cost penalty. The standard colour finish is not an extra and the superb durability of steel means the whole life costs of a steel toilet cubicle are very favourable indeed. I enquiry 570 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-570

GROHE’s impressive portfolio of water products encourages consumers to ‘Enjoy Water’; from the ultimate shower experience with a selection of revitalising shower sprays and spa functions, to technology that promotes increased user comfort, and innovative products that help to make our increasingly busy lives that bit easier. Therefore, combating the often devastating effects of water damage caused by leaks, burst pipes or overflowing sinks and baths was a natural progression in product innovation for GROHE. Research suggests that half of households in Europe have experienced water damage at least once, and reports by the German Insurance Association have shown that 93% of the cases could have been prevented. Meanwhile, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) recently announced that the escape of water causes approximately £ 2 million worth of damage every day. Prime offenders include leaks, and burst or frozen pipes.
“Our aim is to be a source of enjoyment. Mains-related water damage is the most frequent damage in the house”, says Michael Rauterkus, CEO GROHE AG. “When water damage occurs, you want things fixed right away, but it can take weeks if not months before everything is repaired. Therefore, prevention is the best remedy. That is why we developed the GROHE Sense water security system: enjoy the day – enjoy peace of mind, while GROHE Sense and Sense Guard take care of your home”. I enquiry 571 www.mclink.co.uk/1010-571
GROHE has embraced the generation of Artificial Intelligence in the home; incorporating the latest smart technology into its Sense and Sense Guard, a revolutionary product duo to reduce the costs of & risk of water damage. The GROHE Sense smart water sensor monitors humidity, detects leaks and alerts you instantly via the GROHE ONDUS app on your smart device. This means that you will receive an alert if there is a leak in your home, allowing you to shut off the water supply to prevent a flood. The GROHE Sense can be placed conveniently on the floor next to appliances such as washing machines or dishwashers, behind kitchen plinths or within your bathroom near to the toilet, basin or shower. Multiple devices across different rooms in the house can be used to notify the user at the first sign of a problem. When paired with the GROHE Sense Guard, a smart water controller which is installed onto the home’s incoming water pipe, the user can control the water

Future trends for plumbing contractors Do you have the right tool for the job? Remember avocado bathroom suites, shagpile carpets and wood chip walls? We would rather put these 80’s décor trends behind
us. However, there’s plenty of new trends that are going to come our way — particularly those that could impact the world of plumbing. Here, John Cove, marketing manager at power tool accessories and hand tool specialist, Starrett, looks at trends for bathrooms, kitchens and plumbing and what these trends mean for contractors. Natural and recycled materials Using natural and organic materials like timber is becoming increasingly popular in bathroom and kitchen design. Ceramics, glass, metal and stone are familiar materials for bathroom design, however we are now seeing timber accompany these classic textures in the form of wall panels, furniture and decorative features. Open brickwork and rustic features also play a key role in the latest design trends, all of which could provide challenges for installers.
Starrett Diamond Grit Hole Saw cutting porcelain
For example, cutting rustic wooden sections or panelling for a small space with a jig saw could result in chipped and unsightly edges if you’re not using a saw blade designed to cleanly cut this material. Installers need a jig saw blade that cuts on both the up and down stroke to reduce break out and chipping to a minimum, such as Starrett’s Dual Cut blade. Technology We are entering the age of the smart home, with technology to monitor and control our lives entering every room of the house. We are used to ‘touch-free’ faucets in public bathrooms, but the digitalisation of our homes will see gadget developments such as intelligent taps, which use facial recognition to automatically adjust water temperature and flow to personal preference. Programmable features, such as timed shower settings, will also become popular as we adapt to new smart meters keeping our energy use in check. Increasing numbers of consumers are also opting for television and touchscreen technology to feature prominently in bathroom designs. Adding an abundance of tech into confined and humid spaces will result in the need to manage electrical outlets, hide cables and supply safe power solutions. Consumers will expect all of this without compromising the clean, high quality finish that completes their design vision. This means that installers must be equipped with a range of saw blades and machines that can cut various materials. Mounting faucets and screens on or into ceramic, glass or stone surfaces or panels will require hardened tools, like diamond-coated blades and hole saws to ensure smooth surface finishes and edges.
New Kitchen Board range by Fibo Fibo UK has recently unveiled its Kitchen Board range, extending the wall design options available to contractors undertaking refurbishment and new build projects.
Size and shape Another trend we’ve seen emerging is unusually shaped bathtubs. Stepping away from the traditional bath shapes, designers are introducing unusual bathtubs in square, trapezoid and egg shapes. Many of these new designs also use modern faucets or drainage methods, including faucet pipes which come up from the floor and pour into the tub. Modern tastes are also leaning towards ‘floating’ or standalone sinks, rather than cabinet integrated styles, which can also provide difficulties in ensuring that pipes are hidden from sight. Integrating unusual shapes or ensuring pipe work is hidden from view will require precise and intricate cutting through surfaces like tiles, flooring and wall panels. Tools that are purpose built to deliver detailed and complex shape cutting, while also being able to cut through strong materials like stone or glass without damaging the appearance of the material, are vital for this. To preserve the overall design and appearance of bathroom space, it is essential that those installing the fixtures, fittings, hardware and decorative pieces keep up with the latest trends. The wrong choice of tool can result in lost time, wasted materials and unhappy customers. Before investing in tools for your next project, speak to an expert like Starrett to make sure you’re getting exactly what you need.

PROFI-enabled interlock gate switch more than a match for brick, block and tile Brick, block and tile manufacturing plants are notorious for their dusty, arduous environments and high-vibration machinery. This plays havoc with traditional safety interlocks, routinely causing tripping faults. To overcome this problem, Fortress Interlocks has developed its PROFIenabled amGardpro interlock gate switch with built-in
machine control technology, built to withstand the most strenuous conditions. With a locking force of 10,000N, the switch PROFI-enabled eliminates virtually all nuisance tripping faults, making amGardpro the most robust networked safety interlock on the market. PROFINET is the world's most advanced industrial Ethernet system for transporting data in real time between control devices (such as PLCs) and field devices (such as safety gate switches). Using PROFI-enabled amGardpro gate switches allowed a customer of Fortress which manufactures roof tiles to reduce the wiring for each interlock unit, significantly reducing design,

Stokvis HIUs slim AWMS raises money for charity in ‘Fireman Sam’ banger down for central through Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy on-route — and crossing their fingers they don’t break down along the way! A series of challenges have been established to compete for points based on the quality of fancy dress along with the age, engine size and condition of the car. Each team is tasked to raise as much money as possible on their journey, and create laughter and joy along the way. Bryan Clover, CEO of The Rainy Day Trust will present the award for the team that raises the most money in Nice. The Rainy Day Trust is the only charity to support the home improvement workforce and their families in times of need. Whether it’s redundancy, falling on hard times, accidents or illness the Trust can help with financial assistance from one-off grants to modest annual awards. Their support includes helping retirees who are struggling financially.
Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) has taken up the challenge to enter the Pavestone Rally in aid of The Rainy Day Trust and the Teenage Cancer Trust. The annual Rally event raised £60,000 last year for charity, and aims to ramp up a gear this year to raise £100,000. Over 30 cars are taking part, crossing through ten countries between 7th and 10th September. AWMS’ team of four was tasked to ‘buy a banger’ costing under £500 and create something that will grab people’s attention – which is exactly what they’ve done. Introducing ‘Fireman Sam’, the team will be dressing up in their fire fighter costumes and driving from Dover to Monte Carlo — passing

GPJ Consulting, located at Camborne in Cornwall, called on the services of Stokvis Energy Systems to supply a total of 32 bespoke heat interface units, to replace existing models serving separate apartments within the UNISON Building on London’s Euston Road. Stokvis Energy System’s HSeries heat interface units can be used on any type of communal or district heating system, which are becoming increasingly popular for tenanted properties as they avoid the need for multiple gas supplies, individual or shared flues and the challenge annual gas safety of carrying out inspections. The manufacturer can also offer HIUs capable of delivering domestic hot water as well as heating from one unit (Econoplate H2), or direct heating and hot water (H1 Econoplate).

CLOCS community enjoy discounts with Fuel Card Services
Members of the CLOCS community – ‘Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety’ scheme – can now enjoy exclusive fuel cost saving offers with Fuel Card Services. Construction clients, contractors and fleet operators across the UK are adopting the National Standard for Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS) – to ensure and demonstrate that they are taking all reasonable actions to protect pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users. FCS are proud to announce that they have become CLOCS Champions, and can play a role in helping to promote this potentially life-saving initiative. The Standard outlines a common road safety framework for use by the construction logistics industry and aims to achieve farreaching changes in the way the industry manages potential dangers to vulnerable road users. As a CLOCS Champion, FCS can offer members of this community, or those working towards accreditation, the benefit of this exclusive FCS deal: free fuel cards (normally £12 per year) and Platts price on fuel (which means that CLOCS members are paying the lowest margin above cost price, and have assurance that their price will remain competitive against the national average for the duration of the account).
