TOOLS & SITE EQUIPMENT ABRACS Launched a brand new abracs.com in August to showcase their extensive range of abrasive consumable products and top quality service to the online market.

25 Years of Partnership for Epwin & Total Glass 2016 marks a milestone anniversary for Epwin Group and Profile 22 customer Total Glass. Since 1981 Total Glass has been manufacturing and supplying Profile 22 products, as Group Managing Director, Frank Deary explains. “Total Glass has been with Epwin and Profile 22 since day one. When we were looking for a profile supplier they ticked all the boxes; a high quality and sustainable range of products with a stable supply chain. That decision 25 years ago has formed the business we have today, and with Profile 22’s

support we are now one the UK’s largest fabricators of PVC-U products. “We have built a strong relationship with Profile 22, and having the backing of such a well-respected profile supplier in the industry has definitely played a part in Total Glass’ growth over the last two decades. “We are really excited to start using the Optima system in November. As always, it offers cutting edge technology that ticks every box, and we are sure that it will be well received by our customers.” From their 100,000 square foot premises in Liverpool, Total Glass manufactures in excess of 2,500 frames per week for its UK-wide customer base, which includes private and public sector organisations. Hailed as the biggest launch in the window industry for a decade, Profile 22 revealed the Optima range earlier this year and the response has been great. A fully-integrated, 70mm-depth system, it’s easy to install and suitable for a wide range of projects.

Katrina Earl, Northern Regional Manager for Epwin Window Systems adds: “Our relationship with Total Glass has been a long and happy one and is a great example of how we can work together to develop a strong and sustainable business. Contact Total Glass on 0151 549 2339 or visit www.totalglass.com. Find out more about Optima at www.profile22.co.uk or call 01952 290910.

Presented with the Gold Award for the Best Heating Appliance at this years House Beautiful award ceremony, the Elise woodburning and multi-fuel ranges are Stovax’s greenest burning fires. Their Ecodesign credentials and innovative interiors minimise emissions and help to add to the eco-friendly lifestyles many families now-a-days aspire to. The newest addition to this collection, is the Elise Glass range. These have the benefit of a beautiful glass door frame enhancing the flame visuals and giving the fires a new look and feel. In addition, these fires have a host of styling options and frames to enhance the look of the fire. The Elise Glass has an efficiency rate of up to 83% and the largest of these fires, the Elise 850 has an average heat output of 9kW.

Gazco’s ultra-realistic and versatile gas fire, the Reflex 75T Body: The new Reflex 75T gas fire includes ultra-realistic flames with its innovative burner system, featuring burners that are hid within the ceramic logs. This way, the flames not only create a varied effect by being at different heights, but they also envelop the logs from a variety of directions to create a distinctively realistic wood burning fire effect. There are three sets of twin burners each of which can be controlled independently of one another, to create any desired

ambiance. The Reflex’s LED Emberglow up-lighting systems create authentic embers which can be enjoyed both with and without the heat, weather permitting. The Reflex also enjoys the benefit of having a non-reflective glass front. This gives homeowners an uninhibited view of the flames as well as creating a beautiful open-fire aesthetic. The versatility of this fire comes into play with its ability to fit wintin a standard 36” chimney breast. This means the many homes looking to maintain that period feel are able to do so and still maintain the look of a traditional wood burning fire with this Reflex 75T. It can be framed within a mantel for a more traditional fireplace appearance, but can also be installed further up the wall encased in one of the many frames available in the range for a contemporary look. Purplex cements growth plans with new HQ acquisition

Purplex, the full-service marketing agency for the building products industry, has secured an additional 5,000 ft2 office space after parent company, the Ascot Group, confirmed a £1million investment programme. The new 3 storey HQ will add to the firms existing offices near Bristol and central London, giving the group almost 10,000 ft2 of office space.

Managing Director Andrew Scott commented; “Purplex has always invested heavily in recruiting and developing talented people, but we needed more space and resources. The new offices will enable us to scale from 50 to 100+ people while adding fantastic new facilities.” The new HQ is located close to a motorway exit and adjacent to a mainline train station, with Bristol airport just 20 minutes away. It will be equipped with a film making and photography studio, training and conference facilities, and a new technology hub. “The location means easier and faster commuting for our team while providing great transport links for our clients. We prefer face-to-face rather than business by email” added Andrew. Purplex was formed in 2004 by Andrew Scott, who was previously marketing and sales director for a number of companies in the building products and home improvement industries. The business provides expert strategic consultancy, PR, branding and digital marketing, as well as photography and video production, with clients ranging from small home improvement firms to global building product manufacturers. Cavity Wall Masonry Skins are Not Watertight

Wind pressurised rain will inwardly penetrate masonry with greater ease than vice-versa, and directional bias is aided by the air pressure differential.

Wind-driven rain that penetrates the exterior skin of a cavity wall will gravitate downwardly within the wall until it reaches the base of the building.

Damp banding/staining will occur where water is retained.

Where window or door openings interrupt this downward flow or where there is a structural change of level/intersection, provision must be made to arrest the gravitating water and evacuate it out of the wall via weeps. But what happens when the outer masonry skin is rendered and no weeps are provided? And can the presence of full fill insulation result in water displacement to an extent that can compromise the intended behaviour of the wall? A freshly rendered wall may resist water penetration when new, but weathering and age rapidly take their toll. During the lifetime of any building rendering will suffer fissures and cracks. These occur within the rendered surface and particularly at the junctions with windows, doorways, etc.

At lintel level if no exit route is provided and/or insulation displacement considerably reduces or eliminates the cavity, water can rise around the faces of insulation where pooling occurs between stopends.

At ground level fully filled cavities rising off a raft, barrier or closed/filled base should take into account the rise or falls in building levels of exterior walls linked with a common cavity. In such situations evacuating possible water flow along a cavity should be addressed before a structural change of level rather than feeding into it, where discharge out of the structure might be difficult. It is possible to incorporate a discreet caviweeps within rendered surfaces that are hardly noticeable once installed. Discreet caviweeps function like an overflow pipe to a tank or cistern they provide an evacuation route for water when required. The Building Regulations and British Standards refer to water penetrating masonry with rendered surfaces, so assessing cavity wall elevations and

constructing in the knowledge water will penetrate the exterior cavity skin during the lifetime of a building makes sense. Cavity Trays if Yeovil is the longest established company in its specialised field and manufactures a range of caviweeps, cavitrays and caviclosers suitable for rendered and non-rendered walls. Look closer at smarter control of fuel costs Taking a closer look at fuel cards should reveal that they have much more to offer fleet managers than savings on diesel and petrol. The whole point of finding the right fuel card, however, is to save money and time. No other way of buying fuel offers the advantages of fuel cards. With commercial rate fuel cards, you always know in advance exactly how much your fuel will cost, regardless of where a driver fills up, and the price is typically up to 4p per litre less than the national average pump price. Your fixed price applies at thousands of filling stations nationwide, from city centres to rural back roads. It even applies to motorway service stations, where the saving is up to 10p per litre. You refuel now and pay later, with the interval between refuelling and being invoiced meaning anywhere up to two weeks of interest-free credit. www.mclink.co.uk/966-100 ENQUIRY-Card 100

Summer shed revived to perfection

Osmo UK wood finishing products are a favourite among many, from DIY amateurs to professional craftsmen, and now, Horsham homeowner, Nicola Kefford. After suffering a few complications with her garden shed, including joinery snags, gaps between the wood work and blown wood filler, DIY enthusiast, Nicola was introduced to Osmo’s External Sealer. Offering a high quality exterior seal made from ecofriendly products, Osmo provided Nicola with the ideal wood finish treatment to revive her beloved shed back to perfection. “After spending more time in the garden, I began to notice a few gaps in between my shed’s wood panels and joints. The wood filler I applied previously was already starting to blow, making the shed’s aesthetics appear tatty and vulnerable to water leaks”. I’m extremely passionate about environmentally friendly products and was recommended Osmo’s External Sealer. www.mclink.co.uk/966-101 ENQUIRY-Card 101

Marmox Thermoblock specified for low energy extension to Kent School The construction of a new extension to the teaching facilities at Glebe School in West Wickham, Kent, has featured the use of 140 mm wide Thermoblock units manufactured by Marmox Limited, specified to carry the main structural envelope of the two-storey building. The incorporation of Thermoblocks at the wall-floor junction results in the virtual elimination of the heat loss at this cold bridge. The new building will provide the secondary school with a number of facilities including an art-room, additional classrooms and new washrooms. Furthermore, as is common now in the education sector, the extension has been designed to achieve very good standards of energy consumption through high levels of insulation. Look closer at fuel cost transparency Taking a closer look at fuel costs can bring unpleasant surprises for some fleet managers. Although fuel probably represents their largest variable cost item apart from staff costs, many have only a limited idea of how much they are spending. Unless a fleet is refuelling with the right commercial rate fuel cards, it is virtually impossible to predict fuel costs with any precision. Paying pump prices means that identical vehicles can refuel with diesel or petrol at exactly the same time, only a few miles from each other, but at greatly differing costs. If one fills up at a supermarket and the other on the motorway, the bills could differ by 10p per litre or more. Worse, they could both

www.mclink.co.uk/966-106 ENQUIRY-Card 106

refuel at the same places a couple of days later and find that the prices have gone up. This could happen week after week, giving the fleet manager no chance of predicting expenditure. www.mclink.co.uk/966-107 ENQUIRY- Card 107

Modular design can be both high quality and fast Contrary to general assumptions, the design process for industrial wood construction can be both high quality and fast. The advantages of modular design are clear: dimensionally accurate wood elements can help in improving both the technical design process and collaboration between partners.

Prefabricated wood elements enable fast, efficient and easy design without reducing quality. Reports on the benefits of such a lean approach are convincing: In a study of companies that have applied lean construction methods, 84% report higher quality in construction and 80% experienced greater customer satisfaction. 1 “A more efficient approach to building design is required, since the number of people worldwide in need of housing is growing at a rate of 90,000 per day. In

turn, design firms benefit from shorter design times since more projects can be handled per designer per year,” Matti Kuittinen, architect and researcher from Aalto University, points out. The early operative stages of a project are those in which most of the quality and value of the project can be ensured or lost. “Frequently, a very fast execution is needed due to limited space or other constraints related to the work site. The lightness of the wood has been a

deciding factor for us in choosing wood elements in those challenging situations”, architect Fabienne Bulle from Fabienne Bulle architecte & associés explains. Designer’s asset: the dimensional accuracy of Kerto® LVL When accelerating the speed of design, one must pay careful attention to quality. Excessive hurrying too often leads to design mistakes, which can be a significant cause of delays at a building site. Engineered wood products, such as Kerto® LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber), have more dimensional accuracy than materials such as concrete or steel, in which temperature needs to be considered. For the designer this means utilizing wood elements can make a real difference in streamlining the design process and speeding it up without endangering quality. “As an architect, I appreciate the technical and constructive qualities Kerto offers. Similar to sewing, it allows absolutely innovative formal cuttings”, Bulle says. Enabling a fast and smooth modular design process Designing with wood does not have to be a laborious and time-consuming process. Technical advantages, such as building information modeling (BIM’s), help to enhance the design process.

An insufficient flow of information between the client, builder and various design agencies collaborating on the same project may also create problems. “One way to enable easier interaction is to also utilize “prefabrication” in design. Instead of developing designs from scratch each time, predesigned elements can be used. This enables smoother collaboration, speeds up the design process and eliminates mistakes”, Matti Kuittinen says. The most important tools for design – quick facts • Building information modelling helps in getting the most out of wood products. Millbrook Tower Stands Tall Following Replacement of Rainwater Drainage Stacks One of the tallest buildings in Southampton has had a complete drainage solution designed and installed without the temporary re-homing of any residents.

Formerly the tallest building in Southampton, the Millbrook Tower stands at 240 feet. Built over 50 years ago, the building had a cast iron drainage system installed that had started to rust and fail, causing excessive leaking in the 144 flats in the development. Southampton City Council (SCC) who wanted a complete holistic approach to the design, manufacture and installation of the replacement drainage system, approached Polypipe. In January 2016,

eight members of the Direct Labour Organisation (DLO) department of SCC came to Polypipe Terrain’s Centre of Excellence in Aylesford for training to gain a better understanding of the specification, assembly and installation of plastic fabricated drainage stacks. Working with SCC, as experts in providing intelligently engineered solutions for the movement of water and air around tall buildings, Polypipe Terrain assessed the failing drainage stacks in Millbrook Tower, and designed

a new high-density polyethylene system. Terrain FUZE HDPE was installed due to a number of its key benefits over other more traditional materials. Lighter in weight than cast iron, Terrain FUZE HDPE can feature longer pipe runs, so less jointing is required. As the system is jointed using electrofusion welding, where the weld area is as strong as the host material, the system integrity is increased and consequently the risk of leaks in the development is dramatically reduced. Due to the inherent material characteristics, Terrain FUZE HDPE lends itself to fabrication. Utilising Polypipe’s unique Terrain Fabrication Service, the system was fabricated to exact specification and delivered to the site, where Southampton’s DLO were able to complete the installation work across the 144 properties 40% faster than the average for such works. This meant that the residents of Millbrook Tower were able to remain in their properties, a key consideration when designing the drainage stacks of the building. Jim Simpkins, Housing Refurbishment Project Manager for Southampton City Council, said: “Millbrook Tower has been standing for 50 years and so naturally the drainage systems in place were not functioning as well as required. Polypipe

Terrain provided a single source for all our drainage requirements, helping in the specification, design, manufacture and installation of replacement drainage stacks, ensuring we had expert advice from start to finish. As with all refurbishment work in our residential properties, it is always our intention to do so with as little intrusion as possible. Working with Polypipe Terrain, we were able to deliver live stack replacements across 144 individual properties with minimum disruption to residents.” Ed Swift, Business Development Manager at Polypipe Terrain, added: “We have worked closely with numerous councils on the replacement of live stacks within tall buildings so understand the issues surrounding this. Training SCC’s DLO on the specification and installation of drainage stacks means they are able to use this method, and our fabrication service in future projects. By utilising our service from the design stage of the project, we provided a bespoke design and manufacture service, adding real value to the Southampton City Council project.” www.mclink.co.uk/966-512 ENQUIRY-Card 512

Water, water everywhere but 100% dry & comfortable feet with BASE safety boots No matter how wet conditions may get underfoot, feet stay dry as a bone with Be-Dry and Be-Powerful, the latest safety work boots from BASE featuring the latest technology to make them 100% waterproof and ultracomfortable. Thanks to OutDry technology® the footwear features an outer waterproof and light-weight breathable barrier that keeps feet dry, cool and comfortable. For the BePowerful range a patented TPU Skin outer sole, combined with an Air Tech mid sole ensure the boots stay comfortable all day long, even in the toughest conditions. Tradesmen can choose between three new safety boots in the BASE range, available in the UK exclusively through Hyde – Be-Dry Mid, Be-Dry Top and Be-Powerful – each of which not only keep feet dry in wet

conditions, but also feature a wealth of other benefits to increase comfort levels even further. Be-Dry Mid is suitable for everyday use in wet conditions and temperatures as low as -17°C, while Be-Dry Top includes PrimaLoft® technology, making the boot even more comfortable when worn in very low temperatures. As with all BASE footwear, safety and comfort always come first, with the new range featuring LifePlus, a technology developed to improve grip and outer sole resistance, even in the wettest of conditions. Providing stability underfoot when working on constructions site where there is a constant presence of water, the doubledensity sole is thin, flexible and ultralight, while superior shock absorption makes light work of rough and uneven surfaces too. SlimCap technology throughout the range means the footwear is up to 35 per cent lighter than standard steel toecapped safety work boots. The metal free toe-cap is just 6.5mm thick and equipped with a pre-shaped protective shape so that toes aren’t left feeling the pinch. Meanwhile the patented SmellStop system prevents bad odours and acts as an anti-bacterial treatment, so the comfort continues long after the hard work of the day is over. For more details on this 100% waterproof safety footwear by BASE, call Hyde on 0121 704 2324 or visit www.brianhyde.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/966-515 ENQUIRY-Card 515

BoSS Zone:1 Takes On The Challenge The new BoSS Zone:1 Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) industrial modular access tower system takes to the challenge in assisting the removal of 30ft telephone pylons. Positioned in residential gardens, access hire specialist Tower Hire Services Ltd. were tasked with providing a suitable access solution to contractors Cleartrack, to remove pylons on behalf of leading telecommunications company, BT Openreach in the depths of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Tower Hire Services Ltd. has been providing access solutions to professionals for over 23 years, specialising in the hire, erect and sale of access towers, with BoSS access towers playing a vital role in its fleet since day one. Perry Joyce, at Cleartrack, said: “After

being commissioned by BT Openreach to remove telephone pylons, we contacted Tower Hire Services Ltd. and provided them with the specification of the project. Once reviewing the requirements, Tower Hire came back with the recommendation of using the BoSS Zone:1 tower. “The product was ideal for the job in hand, enabling us to effectively undertake the project and provided a vital tool to allow efficient customer service to BT Openreach.” Neil Eltringham, Supervisor at Tower Hire Services Ltd. said: “The specifications set out were quite restricting both to get into the site and the nature of the task, so recommending the right product was vital. With it being residential dwellings, the product had to fit through narrow walkways and erected quickly to ensure minimal disruption to residents. “The BoSS Zone:1 tower was selected primarily for its non-conductive and non-sparking qualities of the fibreglass material, providing Cleartrack with a safe platform to undertake their work. It was also selected for its compact size once dismantled, and quick erection to get the job finished quickly and efficiently.” WernerCo’s BoSS Zone:1 Fibreglass access tower system offers the ultimate solution for those working in challenging environments. The heavyduty access towers are non-conductive, non-corrosive and non-oxidising, so are ideal for work in rain and electrical installations. The tower is also nonsparking, so safe to use where dust,

vapour or combustible material is present. The new access tower features integral ladders with 250mm easy climb rung spacing and 500m frame rung spacing. They are available in a choice of 0.85m and 1.45m frame widths, 1.8m or 2.5m platform lengths, and in a choice of platform heights from 1.2m to 12.2m. Ben Sly, National Account Manger for BoSS towers commented: “When working in highly sensitive environments, like the removal of telephone poles, it is absolutely paramount that the equipment used meets the highest safety standards. Our latest BoSS Zone:1 access tower does just that, offering the industry an access solution for a multitude of usages.” Neil Eltringham, added: “We’ve had BoSS access towers in our fleet since we started and the recent launch of the Zone:1 tower is a great addition to our range, giving our customers an alternative to aluminium towers. “We’ve found that the Zone:1 tower is becoming increasingly popular not only within electrical industries but also rail industries too. We look forward to working more with BoSS’ great product offering in the future enabling us to give our customers the products they need.” To find out more about the BoSS range of towers and micro powered access visit www.bossaccesstowers.com or call 01621 745900. www.mclink.co.uk/966-516 www.mclink.co.uk/847-500 ENQUIRY-Card 516 ENQUIRY-Card 500

Attention carpenters, shop-fitters & joiners there is a product now on the market that can make your life easier. Whether its scribing skirting boards, dado rails or any other mouldings, there are no excuses for leaving any gaps. It’s now the responsibility of the trade, such as painters and decorators, to cover up poor workmanship. Tibby Singh has many years of experience in scribing by hand and he sometimes wished he could go faster, expecially when he has hundreds of metres of skirting to fit. Upon unboxing Trend’s Scribe Master Pro Scribbling Jig, he states that his initial thought was that it looked like a complex bit kit. However, as soon as he looked closer he quickly realised what each component of the tool was for. The Jig itself comes fully assembled, so you dont need to waste any time assembling it together. There are four simple steps before you’re fitting the skirting to the wall. Firstly, you simply place an off-cut of your material into the setup area. Secondly, you push the combs against the surface of the off-cut using the comb alignment tool to recreate your profile. Once aligned you slightly tighten the knobs and flip the combs over, into the cutting position. Finally you make

that final cut, running the router against the profile. All this just takes a couple of minutes, with the final cutting step taking about 15 seconds of these. This means that once the jig has been set up on one profile, you can create the same scribe over and over again in no time, without leaving any gaps. This sounds good in an ideal world, but bet it doesn’t work out of square walls that aren’t plumb or doing a leading edge or a back cut? However, the answer to all of these is yes, it does. The Scribe Master Pro doesnt see anything as a problem. For example, you could scribe any two different skirting boards together. By hand it would be near enough impossible to scribe in torus skirting into a ovolo skirting. However, the way the Scribe Master Pro is designed and set up. Its just as easy as scribing any other two pieces together. Another example where it sees no difference is the material that’s being scribed - its just another piece of wood. Anyone who’s tried to scribe hardwoods would agree that its much harder to cut and scribe, yet it needs to be more accurate if its going to be stained. The Jig is constructed from a high pressure laminate, making it very

durable yet light. It also has thermal properties that ensure each component slides over each other regardless of it being too hot ot too cold. The combs, nuts and bolts are all stainless steel, so they’ll never see a crust of rust. With the use of 1/4in. router bit and a 30mm router guide bush, you can cut boards up to 195mm tall and 32mm thick. Quick and accurate method to scribe skirting and dado rails using a router. • Cuts precise scribes in just 15 seconds using a medium duty router with a 30mm guide bush fitted. • Fully variable, cuts left and right hand scribes. • Up to ten times faster than manual scribes. • Up to 195mm tall boards and m maximum 32mm thickness. • Min length of component is 300mm. • Scribes profiles into kitchen plinths. • Scribes warped boards accurately. • Can be used on out-of-plumb walls. • Includes HSS 4mm spiral 1/4-inch shank router cutter and comb aligning tool. • Made from High Pressure Laminate for stability. • Requires a medium or heavy duty plunge router. • Patent No. GB2441513. • A Unibase may be required for certain makes and models of router.

Lowering the barriers to band saw access ~ Starrett opens band saw demonstration zone in Gloucestershire ~

Saw blade specialist, Starrett is bringing its expertise in band saw machines and blades to a new demonstration zone in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. Based on the Newton Trading Estate, within the facility of long established engineering distributor Tewkesbury Saw Ltd, the showroom will exhibit Starrett’s extensive range of band saw machines. The area will be open to the public six days a week, from November 23, 2016. Starrett’s UK manufacturing headquarters is the company’s 200,000 square foot site in Jedburgh, Scotland. The Scottish base forms the epicentre of its UK and European operations and currently supplies products to over 50 countries through Starrett’s wellestablished network of agents and distributors. The new demonstration zone in Tewkesbury will be a more central, and easily accessed venue to offer contractors in the South of England and the Midlands the opportunity to view the band saw machines in action. Starrett’s band saw range includes bench top, gravitational, manual and semi-automatic machines, all designed for a variety of specialised applications. The bench top machines, for example, are ideal for maintenance workshops and metalworking and Starrett has recently added a new bench top machine to this range, the S1105. The new model is considerably lighter than other bench top saws in Starrett’s portfolio and as a result, is ideal for use by contractors and hobbyists alike. In contrast, Starrett’s collection of semiautomatic band saw machines are much larger in scale and are more suited to heavy duty applications. Like all of Starrett’s band saw range, the semi-automatic machines comply with all of the required CE safety standards.

“Tewkesbury Saws has been a Starrett customer for many years,” explained John Cove, marketing manager at Starrett. “The new showroom, which will be housed on the second floor of the Tewkesbury Saws facility, will provide potential customers with easy access to the machines. “We’ve got a long history of excellence in the band saw sector, and this isn’t just a result of strong design and manufacturing. We work closely with our customers to help them find the best machine for their needs, and opening this new showroom will help us expand our capabilities in this regard. The showroom will be staffed by experts trained by our team of specialists, so they will be able to answer any questions customers may have regarding our machines.” Starrett manufactures and supplies a wide variety of band saw blades for every cutting application, including carbide and diamond, bi-metal, carbon, woodcutting and more. Starrett saws and hand tools are designed with strict quality control procedures to ensure that the company’s range of tools continues to be the most accurate, robust and durable on the market. There is no appointment necessary to visit the new Tewkesbury demonstration area and the zone is open to the public from Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and Saturday mornings. However, if you would like to find out more about Starrett and its band saw range before visiting, please visit the Starrett website or call +44 (0)1835 863501. www.mclink.co.uk/966-524 ENQUIRY-Card 524

Bahco’s new ‘slim blade’ screwdriver solves old problem Bahco designers have solved an old problem which electricians have wrestled with for years: how to reach sunken screws and spring elements in especially confined spaces, safely and easily. Not only is the blade of the new ‘Slim’ 1000V insulated screwdriver Bahco manufactures 30% narrower than others but its ergonomic handle is slimmer too. With many 1000v screwdrivers the insulation often obstructs and prevents access to low lying fasteners. Bahco’s ‘extra slim’ solution reduces the blade diameter, using integrated protective insulation. The new screwdriver also enables a higher transfer of force with less effort, while its ergonomic features protect

even the toughest hands from the risk of muscle strain or injury. Safety has always been a top priority for Bahco. All its insulated screwdrivers are water bath tested at 10,000v to ensure safe working at 1000v, fully meeting the IEC 60900 Standard. The quality of the ‘Slim’ screwdriver’s blade exceeds current standards relating to hardness by 130% and in relation to torque strength by 200%. Several materials, each with individual properties, are used to make the ergonomic handle. A resistant plastic is

used for the core, ensuring that the blade is held securely, even under high strain. A softer material is used for the coloured zones, providing high frictional resistance and allowing the transfer of high forces, resulting in less screwdriving effort being required. Red sections of the handle, with their hard surfaces, prevent the user’s hand sticking to the handle, making it possible to reposition the hand quickly and easily. Plastics used in the handle meet the

most stringent test requirements for low temperature impact strength, at minus 40 degrees C. Screw head symbols and tip size identification markings make it easier for electricians to find the screwdriver they need for each task. Visit www.bahco.com to see the full Bahco range of electricians’ insulated screwdrivers, side cutting pliers and other tools designed for professional use.

Scott Safety launches new Duraflow Powered Air Respiratory with real-time airflow control Respiratory expert Scott Safety introduces Duraflow, a lightweight and ergonomically designed Powered Air Respirator (PAR) with sophisticated realtime air flow control technology. The new solution gives complete wearer assurance of respiratory protection to focus on the job rather than the protective equipment itself, in a multitude of hazardous situations and industries. Mark Andrews, Global Product Line Manager Powered Air, Halfmask & Airline at Scott Safety said: “Our design intent for Duraflow was to bring to the market a reliable, durable powered air product at an affordable price for those currently using respirators with filters fitted directly to the mask (negative pressure mode).” Duraflow’s automatic monitoring features ensure the airflow rate is maintained at precisely the correct level to afford protection for the user. Visual and audible diagnostics alert the user of any drop in airflow below the required level or when the battery needs re-charging. Two high energy density battery options are available – standard and extended duration, which can be selected depending on shift coverage required - less downtime, more working time. Duraflow will help employers meet the needs of workers across all demographics - with its low

respiratory burden. As highlighted in Scott Safety’s latest whitepaper, changes in lung function in older employees working in manual positions can reduce their ability to undertake certain active tasks. By providing workers with a cooling stream of purified air, Duraflow can for some workers make the difference between whether a job can be completed or not. Highly versatile, Duraflow is compatible with a plethora of Scott Safety headtops, filters and accessories, protecting workers from a variety of environmental hazards.

FIGHT BACK AGAINST VANDALISM WITH ASBO Vandalism and graffiti is a growing concern within the UK, costing over £1 billion a year to remove. To combat the trend, Everbuild – A Sika Company have launched a new ASBO range, providing both the prevention and cure to the problem.

Within the range is ASBO Anti-Graffiti Coating, a semi-gloss, clear coating designed to protect against costly damage caused by spray paints, marker pens and fly posting. Once applied, the coating prevents paint from bonding, causing it to crack allowing for easy removal using just water and detergent, eliminating the need for any harsh chemicals, whilst posters will fall off on their own after a few days. The coating can be brush or roller applied to concrete, brick, render, masonry and previously painted surfaces. ASBO Anti-Climb Paint is a non-drying, solvent free paint which remains slippery and greasy making climbing virtually impossible. The thick black paint also marks anyone who touches the surface making the intruder easily identifiable. Finally, ASBO Graffiti Remover is a powerful, non-drip aerosol formula which penetrates deep into the graffiti allowing easy removal of paint, felt tip and biro marks left by vandals. ASBO Graffiti Remover can be used on all surfaces including brick, stone, metals and concrete. For more information on the ASBO range or any other product in the Everbuild or Sika ranges, contact your local sales representative, call the sales office on 0113 240 2424 or visit www.everbuild.co.uk. www.mclink.co.uk/966-538 ENQUIRY-Card 538 www.mclink.co.uk/966-103 ENQUIRY-Card 103

Damp: why property purchasers are running scared A new survey reveals how damp problems damage property values, increases the time that homes are on the market and reduces letability. With the right diagnosis and the right approach to treatment, it doesn’t have to be this way, says Safeguard Director Hudson Lambert.

While damp in housing may feel like a concern of the 1970s or 80s, it still proves to be a significant issue in a good number of British homes. The English Housing Survey: Homes 2011 (published in 2013) found that, although declining, the number of dwellings with damp problems was as many as 600,000 dwellings. And it’s still a huge issue. While issues such as cramped rooms, bad smells or even overgrown gardens deter people from property purchases; a new YouGov survey, commissioned by Safeguard Europe, reveals that while all of those would turn many people off, by far the most common – and widely experienced – deterrent is damp. Of the 1,296 potential buyers surveyed in August this year, 91% said that if they came across damp in a property they would be discouraged from making an offer. YouGov also asked people what they would do should they discover the presence of damp once their purchase was underway; 42% said that they would simply walk away, with 48% saying that they would demand a reduction in price, some by as much as 20%. For those looking to sell property, the message is clear: thoroughly identify and deal with damp problems before putting it on the market. The implicit finding of the survey is that investing in remedial works now would lead to a better price and less time on the market.

With homes currently selling for an average of £214,000*, a 20% drop in price equates to over £42,000, far more than the cost of dealing with damp.

timber and damp surveyor would be able to identify specific causes - for example, rain penetration caused by a leaking gutter.

Regionally, this average 20% reduction in offer would be: • North and north east (North Yorkshire, Tyne & Wear and Durham): £29,000. • North west (Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester): £28,000 • Midlands (Warwickshire, Worcestershire, West Midlands): £40,000. • South west (Devon, Cornwall and Somerset): £43,000. • South (Hampshire, West Sussex, Surrey): £69,000. • Scotland (Fife, Stirling, Perth & Kinross): £31,000. • Wales: (Caerphilly, Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan): £34,000.

Condensation is probably the most common cause of damp, a problem sometimes exacerbated by the latest generation of super-airtight homes.

The YouGov survey also revealed how common damp is. In total, the pollsters talked to 2,030 people – both homeowners and renters – and found that almost half of them (49%) had lived in a property with damp problems.

Rain penetration is also a frequent occurrence, either due to damaged or deteriorating masonry or leaking gutters and pipework. For those specifying damp treatments it’s important that the solution is appropriate to the specific cause – or combination of causes – of damp. It’s also crucial for specifiers to keep abreast of the latest technologies and innovations which can speed up the process of treatment, while maintaining performance and quality. For example, damp-proofing rods, combined with ‘express’ replastering systems can slash the time required to transform a damp room to less than two days.

Too tough to tackle? The findings of the survey reveal a common perception amongst those who own and rent houses that damp is a difficult and time-consuming problem to fix. In fact, this is only true in a very small percentage of cases.

There will also be situations where damp cannot be eliminated at source. Here, products such as damp-proof coatings for floors and walls may be the right solution.

The most important step in dealing with damp is to understand what is causing it. 'Rising damp' is often given as a cover-all diagnosis, however a qualified

Having established the correct diagnosis and identified the appropriate solution; the next major concern in realising successful damp treatment is finding a competent and trusted contractor. The

survey gives some insight into what potential clients look for in a contractor: damp-proofing certification was the most commonly cited factor (78%), followed by the quality of guarantees (67%) and of materials (58%). In conclusion, there is still much misperception and misinformation about the causes and treatment of damp among developers, landlords and householders alike. Reputable manufacturers and contractors must join forces to combat this by providing informed advice and solutions so that treating damp is seen as a viable and valuable course of action, rather than something to be avoided at all costs. Safeguard Europe’s range of marketleading, proven solutions is supported by the company’s own highly qualified and experienced staff. The support and know-how they offer is extended to contractors, specifiers and property owners and includes technical advice, specification help, research and even inhouse laboratory analysis of plaster and masonry. Guardian Roof Unveils New Lightweight Slate Range The UK’s leading solid replacement roof manufacturer has launched its first exclusive range of natural slates. The slates have all the aesthetic appeal of natural slate without the risk of cracking or breaking - and at a fraction of the weight of traditional slate. The new Guardian slate range is made from resin-bonded crushed limestone. It boasts superior life expectancy; is grade ‘A’ fire rated on a standard membrane; and recyclable at end of use. Guardian roof managing director Joe

Kearney said: “We believe the new Guardian Slate range is the ultimate slate replacement roof solution. Today’s house builders and owners demand lower cost, faster and easier construction without compromising on quality. “They also want the replacement roof to fit in with the rest of the house; whether it is new or traditional.

“To meet the construction industry’s demands, we are constantly developing new solutions. Innovation runs through everything we do, and our new slate range is no exception. The result is an exclusive slate that is extremely durable, impact and heat resistant and offers the highest level of UV protection.” Guardian slates are available in five colours - Black, Terracotta, Grey, Brown and Mulberry - increasing the likelihood of a close match between the replacement roof and the original. Guardian’s network of solid roof system installers is on course to more than double its target membership numbers in just two years.

In 2014, Guardian Roof launched a new membership drive to recruit a total of 200 accredited installers by 2016. But that figure already stands at over 350. And a total of 400 is now within reach by the end of the year. Guardian Warm Roof was the first solid roof system with LABC and LABSS approval. And earlier this year, Guardian became the UK’s first replacement roof manufacturer to satisfy the new LABC guidelines. Guardian Roof has already passed independent tests in UK and Scotland using of WUFI software to measures the U value and the interstitial condensation risk. Joe adds: “We have established an enviable reputation as the market leader in new-build or replacement solid roofs for conservatories. And now we need even more proven skilled installers who can maintain our reputation for many years to come.” More information about Team Guardian, and how to become an installer of the UK’s number one replacement roof, is available by calling 0800 0665832 or visiting www.guardianroof.co.uk/ join-team-guardian/ More information about the new Guardian slate range is available from www.guardianroof.co.uk.

Remmers Waterproofing Solutions Keep Guests Dry

The roof of a busy hotel in the central of Manchester required general repairs and had failing waterproofing to the parapet walls The building had been suffering from water ingress from the roof for a number of years which had gradually worsened over time. This had led to water damage to the interior and had highlighted problems with the parapet concrete wall above. The failed areas of waterproofing required replacing with a flexible waterproof system which could be terminated over the parapet wall and into the existing waterproofing. Remmers Kiesol was used as an injection agent to remedy the damp in the brickwork and is ideal for fair-faced masonry with high moisture penetration. Remmers Multi-Tight 2K was also applied as it has a crackbridging capacity five times more effective than the standard flexible mineral based waterproofing systems. www.mclink.co.uk/966-116 ENQUIRY-Card 116

Clement steel windows picked for church conversion in Battersea The Sanctuary, formerly St Paul’s Church, in Battersea, has been impressively converted into four luxury apartments and one stunning new build house. Clement were selected to supply all the steel windows and conservation rooflights for this project. The 19th century Listed Building has a prominent position within the St John’s Hill Conservation Area of the London Borough of Wandsworth. The church had fallen into disrepair following the demise of its original use. Clement worked closely with The James Laurence Group and the London Borough of Wandsworth’s Planning Department to sensitively restore the church, refurbishing and replacing all the leaded windows. The bespoke demands of the project required Clement to use two steel window ranges, sometimes within the same aperture.

The Sky’s The Limit with Stratus The Synseal Group, a name now synonymous with product

development and innovation, is hitting the market with yet another hotly anticipated product, the Stratus Thermal Lantern Roof - a highly desirable and aspirational home improvement solution. Andy Jones, Sales and Marketing Director at the Synseal Group explains: ”Visitors to the FIT Show earlier this year were invited for a pre-launch preview of Stratus and the market response was extremely positive. Just as with WarmCore, we went back to the drawing board to purpose design what we believe to be the most thermally efficient, stylish and contemporary aluminium lantern roof system currently available and a totally new concept in conservatory roof solutions.

“Aesthetically the Stratus is truly cutting edge. It has been designed for an incredibly clean, modern look that’s totally on trend and is complemented by the full aluminium exterior for a premium, hard wearing, architectural look. Available in 2 way, 3 way and contemporary style – whereby the ridge is supported by the hip rafters and negates the requirement for rafters either side – the lantern roof can span up to 3 x 6 metres. The fact that the pitch is fixed at 20˚ allows the system to use incredibly discreet purpose-designed top caps and internal covers, without any unsightly gaps to the rafter ends. The minimal ridge and aluminium cappings completes the look, resulting in a sleek, low-line installation. Designed with an obsessive attention to detail with elements like the thermally broken eaves beam produced in a black finish meaning that when viewed from above, the perimeter appears as a discreet shadow line. “The Stratus’ fully thermally-broken ridge, rafters and eaves beam, offer unbeatable thermal product performance in this sector. The use of polyamide nylon and glass composite thermal breaks (a material that is

533 times less conductive than aluminium) means Stratus is up to 65% more thermally efficient than traditional aluminium systems. Features like these are gold dust for customers selling to homeowners as they can promote the host of benefits including a room that is warmer in winter and cooler in summer with the resulting reduction in heating bills. “There is huge market demand for high-end, highperformance lanterns roofs to ‘open’ up homes and customers are seeing particular demand for application in modern kitchen diner extensions for example. The Stratus Thermal Lantern Roof will provide our customers with a point of differentiation in a competitive market, without the need to erode the margin potential.” Call the Synseal Group today on 01623 444 390 for more information or visit www.synseal.com/stratus www.mclink.co.uk/966-549 ENQUIRY-Card 549

Deeplas brings contemporary aesthetic to 90s office block Linthorpe Developments, a commercial North-East property company, is rejuvenating a 26-year-old office block in Middlesbrough using embossed pearl grey PVC-U cladding from Deeplas, the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of calcium organic PVC-U roofline products and building plastics. The colour, pearl grey, is a big factor because it provides the right upmarket facelift for a property that is being transformed into the Cleveland Business Centre, a high-specification serviced office space for up to 55 start-ups and expanding enterprises. Linthorpe founder and managing director Geoff Hogg says he chose Deeplas embossed cladding because it offered better value for money, with

lower maintenance costs and speedier installation than conventional alternatives. “The architects would have liked cedar cladding but maintenance would have been an issue because cedar goes silver over time and I don’t want to have to have the cladding treated every five years”, he explains. “Embossed cladding achieves a similar appearance but won’t lose colour. Also cedar would have been supported on

tanalised laths which can ultimately rot, whereas Deeplas cladding uses plastic battens that won’t”. In Mr Hogg’s view the original building was far too monolithic and the cladding at the gable ends will break up the block-like appearance with columns and bands of colour. Some 140 pearl grey embossed double planks, measuring 6m x 300mm, have been installed as columns and will be set off by 600mm deep horizontal bands of fluorescent green cladding. The green cladding is constructed from 5m lengths of flat plank PVC-U board that has been powder-coated locally and, when completed, will be illuminated from within by powerful LED lights for an eye-catching effect that will make the building into a landmark. Commenting on the project, Deeplas Building Products Director, Hazel Verschuere, said: “This is an imaginative

example of how cladding can help transform a building into something of architectural and aesthetic merit, giving it a contemporary look and feel that will no doubt appeal to local businesses looking for office space.” Designed for easy installation, Deeplas PVC-U shiplap cladding provides an attractive, low maintenance, weather resistant answer to replacing rotten timber cladding, concealing problem areas of brickwork or adding an interesting new feature to a property. The easy-fit, clip-together boards are available in a range of realistic embossed finishes to complement a range of styles from rustic timber-effect to crisp and contemporary. Colours available include: white, light grey, light ivory, mocha brown, sand, sky blue, pearl grey and cream.

Polypipe picked for large scale inland port project Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of engineered sustainable drainage solutions, is proud to be a key supplier for an exciting new inland port and logistics hub, iPort, Doncaster; supplying its Ridgistorm-XL large diameter piping system, Ridgidrain surface water drainage and cable protection products. Developed by Verdion, the iPort will consist of logistic parks with over six million square feet of warehousing, and will boast a new access road to provide direct access from the M18 and a dedicated new onsite 35-acre rail freight terminal. Polypipe were approached by the project’s Main Contractor, Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd and Consulting Engineer BWB to assist and offer an alternative infrastructure

drainage system for the first phase of the project. The initial drainage design consisted of soft SuDS, which took up vital land which could alternatively be used for development. The purposively designed drainage system offered as a solution is Ridgistorm-XL large diameter pipe in diameters 750mm and 1500mm. This drainage solution was developed to deal efficiently with conveyance and attenuation of stormwater

from the development. Following consultation with Buckingham Group and BWB Consulting, project specific structural calculations for the pipes were carried out for the project, taking advantage of the high quality engineering fill that was readily available. This has provided considerable installation savings by minimising the volume of imported granular fill otherwise needed for other types of pipes. The Ridgistorm-XL pipes were manufactured based on stiffness classification of the pipework, the ground conditions and loading considerations on site. The Ridgistorm-XL system also incorporated pre-fabricated RIDGISTORM Access Multiple Pipe Manholes, allowing for inspection access and connecting dual runs of pipe. Polypipe also supplied its BBA HAPAS approved Ridgidrain surface water drainage piping system, as well as Ridgigullys and Ridgiflex. The project has also used Ridgiduct Power, Ridgiduct Lighting and Ridgiduct Power HV to complete the basic infrastructure requirement. Adam Smith, Project Manager, at Buckingham Group Contract Ltd, said: “The initial designs

we had did not make best use of the land available, which was of paramount importance to the client, Verdion. BGCL and BWB have invited Polypipe to provide a versatile drainage system that is able to replace efficiently the hydraulic function of the swales within a very short timeframe. From our initial meeting to design, approval, manufacture and delivery, Polypipe supplied it’s Ridgistorm-XL within two weeks to allow us to hit the extremely tight schedule we had to work towards. Their fully planned delivery schedules and attention to detail allowed us to install the Ridgistorm-XL system considerable quicker than a traditional drainage design using concrete pipes and manholes.” Emma Nicholls, Marketing Manager at Polypipe, said: “We

provided a solution, for a unique project, that used the space available in the most efficient way. The last minute changes meant that the turnaround period was very short, however thanks to our ability to manufacture unique products in our own pre-fabrications facility, we were able to accommodate and provide an engineered solution for iPort, Doncaster.” Following the successful installation and strong relationships developed between Polypipe, Buckingham Group and BWB Consulting Ltd, Polypipe will continue to see its products being installed on further phases of this project. www.polypipe.com www.mclink.co.uk/966-555 ENQUIRY-Card 555

FASERFIXŽ SUPER channel runs drain quayside at Royal Portbury Dock, Port of Bristol The Port of Bristol is a major deep water port with the harbour and its operations designed to routinely accept large cargo Capesize vessels of up to 130,000 DWT (Dead Weight Tonnage) With over £330m invested by First Corporate Shipping Limited in the dock estate in recent years the Port is now recognised as being one of the most productive and technically advanced in Europe. 578 metres of Hauraton FASERFIXŽ SUPER 150, channels have been installed along the redeveloped quayside and container handling area at the Royal Portbury Dock, Port of Bristol. Cat Jones, Hauraton’s South West Area Projects Manager outlines the features and benefits of

FASERFIXŽ SUPER channels that made them ideal for the Royal Portbury Dock project; “Hauraton have for the last 50 years been at the forefront of manufacturing robust Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC) surface water drainage systems that are today distributed and installed around the world in some of the harshest environments. The FRC perfected by the company in the mid 70’s allows our FASERFIXŽ channels and trash boxes to have much thinner walls yet are very much stronger when compared with similar non-reinforced concrete products. A standard feature of FASERFIXŽ SUPER channels are galvanised steel pressings securely moulded on to the top edges of the channel during production, this detail allied with the Class F900 ductile iron gratings supplied for the Portbury Dock project, provides exceptional wear resistance and increased load bearing capability. Unlike some other well known makes, our FASERFIXŽ components are so strong, even prior to installation they are able to endure the rigours of site work and then the twisting wheels of container handling vehicles’ once installed. NorDan celebrates 90 years in business NorDan, one of the biggest Scandinavian producers of high quality, high performance timber windows and doors, celebrated 90 years in business in 2016. The firm was founded in 1926 by Johannes Rasmussen, and is today run by the third generation of the Rasmussen family. NorDan prides itself in using carefully sourced, certified sustainable raw

material. Timber from some of the slowest growing forests in northern Europe, to enable it to produce very high quality frames which create energy efficient products for the construction industry.

It is a firm which is constantly innovating. It has designed incredible windows which are admired by architects and their clients, with credentials and certification that satisfy Passivhaus and beyond. Beyond windows, are solar windows which are in effect solar panels within the window system –the future, today! Moi, in Norway is where Group Headquarters are located and one of 8 manufacturing plants, giving the firm the capability to deliver to the UK and other European markets in high volumes. Rasmussen the founder invented the world’s first tilt and turn window, designed to have good weather properties against high winds and driving rain, but be flexible and easy to clean from the inside. Earlier this year the firm relaunched its three handled window product as “Stormguard” – a unique offering. A timber window which works on a bolt system with no hinge mechanism. And is highly secure and with added safety features as the third handle can be removed, leaving the window safer in certain applications such as student accommodation and commercial

premises, where the window will only tilt in for ventilation, but still able to “turn” when facilities managers need to carry out any maintenance. This window can take a sash weight up to 90Kg, making is suitable for a range of applications. It may have been developed in the 1960s, but over 5 million have been produced with next to no call backs. NorDan is frequently the supplier of choice to the UK construction market – capable of supplying, for example massive contracts such as the 3,000 windows to contractor Jerram Falkus for a regeneration project in East London, or one set of low u value windows for this Years European Green Tourism Award Winners “Lewis Long House”, a self catering business on the western isles Scottish Island of Lewis. The owners experienced 113mph winds in the last storm, and were hugely complementary of their NorDan sliding patio doorsets, which robustly withstood the equivalent of a hurricane. And at a leading homebuilding show, this year NorDan launched its SMART door technology to the UK market on an impressive exhibition stand. The stand also featured a 7.5m sliding patio doorset to rival any thoughts of bifold doors. www.nordan.co.uk

ROLL UP, ROLL UP – FOR AN EXCITING NEW DOOR FROM GARADOR

Garador has launched a brand new product! The GaraRoll Lite is an exciting new garage door that offers a range of advantages and innovative engineering – all at an affordable price. The original GaraRoll roller door was launched back in 2011 and has been a top favourite across the UK, thanks to its space saving design and rust resistant aluminium laths and its unique spring balance system. Now, the new GaraRoll Lite gives an alternative choice for people seeking the advantages of a great roller door but with a significant price advantage. Garador’s managing director Simon Hipgrave says “We have been looking at bringing out a more affordable version of our very sophisticated GaraRoll roller doors for some time, and we are now delighted GaraRoll Lite is ready to put on the market. Simon continues “While we expect our GaraRoll, with its unique technology to continue to sell well; GaraRoll Lite also offers excellent functionality and of course great looks which we know will be appealing for both modern and traditional builds across the country.” As expected, GaraRoll Lite is engineered to Garador’s very high standards. It combines a tubular motor driven design with the convenience of an automatic electric operator and two hand transmitters that use a 433 MHz ultra-high frequency radio signal for added security. The doors are constructed from

77mm high aluminium profiles, filled with CFC free polyurethane foam providing thermal insulation. There is also a built-in internal courtesy light with 2 minute delay, for ease of use on those dark winters’ nights. GaraRoll Lite is available in a choice of three smooth and deco paint colours: Traffic White, Anthracite Grey and Golden Oak (timber effect). Safety is a key consideration with any new door design at Garador. To meet European Safety Standards, GaraRoll Lite is supplied with a solid metal box cover for the curtain when it rolls up at the top of the door opening. An optical sensor has been fitted into the floor seal to ensure that the door curtain stops in the event of an obstruction. The optical sensor utilises light beam technology, whereby when the beam is broken the door will stop. Purchasing a roller door design that is easy to fit is an important consideration for builders and garage door fitters alike. With the GaraRoll Lite, Garador have come up with a handy-belt system to fit the curtain to the barrel, making the door quicker and easier to install. With guides of just 72mm, not normally found on domestic roller doors, these doors can be fitted behind 75mm reveals. Find out more about the new GaraRoll Lite roller door by visiting www.garador.co.uk or calling 01935 443710.

Its all about detail for Viking & Apeer

We make each one individually to suit the house and its surroundings and the homeowners really appreciate the result” The ‘masterpiece’ in the case of Viking is composite doors from Apeer and the company has used no other since they began taking them two years ago: “We’d always liked them, then we took a close look on their stand at the FIT Show and took them on immediately,” he said, “They are double rebated for extra weatherproofing and have a lot more adjustments. Compared to them, most other composite doors are not much better than plain wood. “We have built a reputation all around the island for quality work and the Apeer composite door has got what it takes to uphold that reputation.” Apeer Marketing Manager Linda Tomb replied: “When we work so hard to produce the best in composite doors, it’s really rewarding to see a customer putting so much effort into making them that little bit extra special. Viking have done some great installations on the island and we always look forward to seeing the finished product.” Viking’s expertise in creating those special finishing touches doesn’t end with doors however. More recently, it has won the company a large commercial refurbishment contract that has a bespoke piece of gothic trim built into each window frame.

They say no masterpiece is complete without a frame and no one proves that more in the world of composite doors than Isle of Man based Viking Glazing Ltd. That frame often includes fully bespoke mouldings, ledges and other traditional features, each one individually hand-made by co-founders John Ogle and George Reekie at the company’s Ballasalla factory. “We only use simple materials like fascia boards and pieces of panelling but the end result is a traditional look that is unique to each customer and looks like the kind of finishing that was often used in traditional houses,” John explained. “When people are spending a lot of money on a door, they expect it to look special when it is finished and that is what we aim to give them.

Exclusive new range of roof windows launches in the UK A new high-quality range of roof windows is now available exclusively in the UK from natural light specialist, LB Roof Windows, and can be ordered online, at www.lbroofwindows.co.uk. The Liteleader range from LB introduces three new products, each boasting strong features and benefits, and offering a more affordable alternative to the well established brands. LB Roof Windows sales director, Adrian Cooper, said: “With Liteleader, we’re able to offer yet more choice to our customers – the builders, installers, roofers and contractors – helping them to better capitalise on the business that is out there. “The three new products, EcoLite +, EcoWhite and EcoSolid, are perfectly positioned to help tradesmen increase profits on their projects. Highly versatile, the new range comes with a 10year manufacturer’s guarantee and provides a roof window for every requirement, as well as being a more cost-effective option,” added Adrian. All three versions of Liteleader are extremely easy to install and compatible with all popular roofing materials, from thin slate, to the higher profiled tiles. Featuring safety buttons which allow for the roof window sash to be easily removed or installed, and flexible fixing brackets, the

fitting process is greatly simplified, with less time spent on the job. “Everything about this new range of roof windows is straightforward – from being able to order it online at the builders’ convenience, to our free next day UK delivery for orders over £200, and through to the installation stage,” said Adrian. “This is a roof window for the modern builder who values his time.” With a smooth, flush appearance when installed, EcoLite + is a centre-pivot pine window. Its slimline wooden profile features a ventilation valve and allows for maximum levels of natural light and improved fresh air control. Liteleader EcoWhite has a wide wooden frame pre-painted in white, making it sturdy but modern. The white paint reflects daylight, contributing to even brighter living spaces for the end user, and delivering a contemporary look. Also a centre-pivot roof window,

EcoWhite boasts improved energy performance for maximum comfort and reduced energy bills. Manufactured from led-free white PVC, EcoSolid is a tough, durable, and low maintenance centre-pivot roof window. It has a steel centre core for extra strength, and it represents a stylish addition to any room, but it is particularly ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and rooms with high levels of humidity. Produced by the VKR Group, the same company who manufactures the popular Velux brand, Liteleader roof windows offer the highest quality standards, and can be installed in all roofing materials, in a roof pitch from 15 to 90 degrees. Chamberlain Student Accommodation The University of Birmingham’s new Chamberlain Hall Student Accommodation is an impressive example of regeneration which is in keeping with the landscape as well as providing all essential capacity growth for the future. Consisting of 2 linked tall towers at 17 at & 21 stories and 5 “finger” blocks. The façade had to provide function as well as form. Day-lighting is vital to aid with studying, no dark gloomy corners, a light and airy interior is desirable. Natural ventilation was a must, however, in keeping with the structured façade openin windows were required fronted with ventilation panels, to allow ventilation yet not impact on the façades integrity, maintaining the clean lines and sleek elevations. Making the façade work and integrate with all the cladding elements involved Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems designing new methods of fixing. The flush façade was a must and all the elements: Comar Glazing, Mesh and Copper panels needed to integrate. One of the engineering challenges on the project was the connection of the perforated copper cladding panels to the Comar 6EFT curtain walling. This connection had a few considerations, such as the metals being at opposite ends of

the galvanic table, aesthetic demands, thermal performance and the structural considerations of loading panels to Comar 6EFT curtain walling Continental Installations worked closely with Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems and main contractor Balfour Beatty on the complex façade. The team designed a bespoke capping profile which was extruded with re-enforced walls capable of fixing the copper panels directly to it. A heavy duty pressure plate with a fixing port arrangement, was used to mechanically fix the capping to the pressure plate. Subsequent regular fixings then transmitted the applied loads back to the rear structural mullion member to ensure there was no thermal bridging. All connections were fully isolated to prevent bi-metallic corrosion. This bespoke design then included inward full height opening windows which sat behind the façade, Comar 5P.i Advanced Tilt/Turn open in windows were selected.

These windows were perfect for the application as they offer slim sight-lines, thus maximising daylighting as well as the profiles themselves have thicker walls that provide robustness and large spans to ensure they stand the test of time. On the window elements Comar 5P.i Advanced Tilt/Turn open in windows were selected. These tilt/turn windows are perfect for the application, they offer slim sight-lines to maximise day-lights as well as the profiles themselves have wide wall thicknesses that provide robustness to ensure they stand the test of time. The wire mesh fitted directly onto the

window. The five finger blocks were sited to draw people through the buildings and connect with the landscape beyond. www.comar-alu.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/966-568 ENQUIRY-Card 568

GOLD! For best sustainable development

Network VEKA celebrates 20 years and £1bn in sales!

Lumi launch tops 20 year celebration for Joe Roche

Grosvenor Windows, a proud Horwichbased Network VEKA member, has completed an impressive, residential window and door contract that tipped Network VEKA's cumulative sales over the £1bn milestone. Network VEKA, the industry’s leading installer network, was established in 1996 to combat the double glazing industry's unfortunate reputation for pushy salespeople and sub-par products. The not-for-profit organisation was created to give homeowners a stress-free way to choose home improvements. A group of hard-working PVC-U fabricators and installers came together to find a means to prove their high standards at a glance. Network VEKA only allowed the very best companies in the country to share in its reputation and display the coveted logo, and made sure they stayed the best.

There was plenty to celebrate when Joe Roche Glass & Glazing invited customers and guests to the opening of its new showroom. The event not only marked 20 years in business for the Co Waterford installer but also its launch as the area’s first dealership for the ultra-contemporary Lumi window and door system from Apeer. “It’s a wonderful achievement to have reached 20 years in business,” said Joe after the event, “and we are very fortunate to have Apeer as such an important part of our supply chain. On reaching the 20-year milestone, we knew it was time to reinvigorate the business so the Lumi window and door system has come at just the right moment for us.” Joe founded the company with his wife Bernie in 1996 in the small town of Dungarvan with the philosophy of working to the highest standard to earn word-ofmouth recommendation as well as repeat business.

400 Caledonian Road has been rejuvenated from a brownfield site, into an energy efficient mixed use project by Igloo, the specialists in sustainable property development. Situated in a conservation area, the exterior of the Victorian townhouse couldn’t be altered, including its draughty windows. Selectaglaze was approached to help find an alternative solution to meet the specific footprint requirements. Selectaglaze installed six slimline units from its Series 20 range which is a discreet solution ideal for heritage projects. It reduces heat loss by up to 50% and virtually eradicates draughts.

A Grand Entrance to the Market Place Slamming doors, damage to walls and furniture and trapped fingers could be a thing of the past with the introduction of GEZE’s ActiveStop – a new control mechanism for internal swing doors. It’s a sleek, recessed door control – measuring only 28 mm wide incorporating a draw-in damper – which can be seamlessly integrated into swing doors making them quiet, smooth and easy to operate. GEZE ActiveStop has a gentle stopping action which breaks the swing of the door and stops it in a desired position. The mechanism itself is acoustically dampened and stops doors from being thrown open by careless users,

preventing loud banging and unnecessary damage to the door, walls and furniture. It is ideal for use in both residential and commercial settings in doors without fire protection and is suitable for both new developments and refurbishments with doors of leaf weights of up to 45 kg. www.mclink.co.uk/966-123 ENQUIRY-Card 123

DALE HARDWARE ANNOUNCES JIGTECH SYSTEM RANGE Accompanied the launch of their Jigtech Pro fitting system with a full range of door furniture, tubular latches & accessories that work perfectly in sync to save fitters time on the job. Having led innovation in the door hardware sector for over 25 years with the development of the popular ‘smartlatch’ & ‘push button privacy’ ranges,

the designers at Dale Hardware identified a gap in the UK market for a NEW standard in door fitting and so started the journey in developing the Jigtech system and the new door range furniture range. The range will accompany the already well-received Jigtech Pro Installation Kit, which is set to transform the door handle and latch fitting world, reducing fitting time from over 25 minutes as

Modus delivers twice the performance at Hampshire self-build Etienne Patterson had four principles when he set about building a dream home for himself and a matching home for his parents in rural Hampshire: everything had to be cost effective to install, run and maintain as well as complementing the pastoral setting. So he chose the innovative nine French doors, residential Modus system of doors and doors and stable doors, all windows from Eurocell – the finished in agate grey and white UK’s leading manufacturer, externally distributor and recycler of woodgrain internally. It is window, door, conservatory important to Etienne that and roofline products – for every element looks as if it is timber but with the both houses. The decision was an important unrestricted sightlines of metal one for the Pattersons, since and the best-in-class technical both two-storey homes are performance of PVC-U. equipped with 49 triple-glazed The two houses are on the site Modus Casement windows and of what was a 1950s bungalow

standard to under 5 minutes. A saving of 80% in time that benefits both contractors and fitters alike with increased efficiency, resulting in cost savings and increased earning potential respectively. The complementary Jigtech handle range has also been specially designed without wood screws, the handles simply push together using Dale Hardware’s innovative ‘push-fit sleeves’ and locate in one smooth action. This gives 100% accuracy, making fitting even more efficient. The full range of door furniture consists of high quality, contemporary lever designs mounted on Jigtech fast fit roses and are all factory assembled with spindle and rose fitted for quick installation. The new Jigtech door furniture is available in both contract and premium quality and in a variety of modern finishes. The full range of latches are supplied with a Jigtech spacer and available in a comprehensive array of finishes that perfectly match the handle range in

He looked at many different door and window systems before selecting the Modus range, commenting: “This type of house is not intended to have PVC-U, but is meant to be fitted with external doors and windows made of more expensive materials, either all timber, composite or metal.” He added: “Given that we wanted to achieve efficiency both in

both smart and rectangular forends. Both mechanical and soft action magnetic function can be specified and all versions can supplied with the push button privacy function, for use with Jigtech privacy cover roses. The process of fitting couldn’t be simpler thanks to the Jigtech Pro Installation Kit and complementary door furniture range, which not only saves time and money for fitters but allows freedom of style for clients with the comprehensive range of finishes and colours. The slim framed design of Modus casement windows matched the overall aesthetic of the two houses and the opening windows are indistinguishable from the non-opening ones, so the appearance is uniform. “The casement design means the window can have a floating mullion, so the first floor windows work like a patio door, all four bedrooms have units in a line arranged so that the lefthand or right-hand pair can be opened together to provide a massive escape route,” www.eurocell.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/966-570 ENQUIRY-Card 570

Hidden housing solutions for Accessible Bathrooms New research has revealed almost 2million people have unmet accessible housing needs, giving providers an opportunity to adjust their offering to meet demand. The report, by Habinteg and Papworth Trust, is recommending developers to review their products to deliver solutions that enable maintenance of independence in mainstream housing. Clos-o-Mat can give a single source to address prolonged independence, at least in the bathroom….. “When home adaptations are undertaken, the bathroom is the most common room in which they are needed,” explains Clos-o-Mat marketing manager Robin Tuffley. “Creating an appropriate bathroom, that includes, or

can easily accommodate, certain accessibility features, from the design & build stage is therefore very relevant. “Things like level access shower, fittings that can be adjusted vertically or laterally, texture and colour, can all play a part. And under Lifetime Homes criteria, there should be an accessible toilet at entry level, bathrooms should be designed to be accessible, ideally adjacent to the main bedroom, and the structure should be of having a ceiling track hoist retro-fitted.!” Clos-o-Mat can provide comprehensive

design advice, through to supply, install, commissioning and maintenance of appropriate equipment- including hoists, shower seats, support systems and the only WC unit developed specifically for disabled people, the Closo-Mat Palma Vita wash & dry toilet. Clos-o-Mat has a proven reputation for provision of accessible bathrooms to best practice, and has worked with Habinteg on the social housing provider’s property portfolio, to deliver personal care solutions that deliver optimum independence.

Further, to help architects and planners get it right, the company has produced a white paper ‘Design Guidance & Considerations for an Accessible Bathroom/Wetroom’.

The easy-to-operate single-lever, dualflow tap features a swivel spout that rotates through 360 , which combined with a spout reach of 216mm, allows easy rinsing for single or multi-bowl sinks. The tap is 387mm in height, making an elegant design statement while not dominating the sink space. The Lanark operates on a minimum 0.5 bar pressure so is suitable for both combination boiler and most gravity fed water systems. It is the latest addition to the Carron Phoenix tap portfolio, which includes a choice of 31 mixer, filter and boiling water models to suit all styles and tastes.

IDS launched its newly updated Tuscan solid wood worktop range with an enhanced choice of pre-finished Oak worksurfaces that bring a modern twist to this classically popular material. The new family of four Oak worksurfaces have been designed to appeal to classic and modern tastes with elegantly stained colours that open up the design flexibility of this popular material for a wider range of kitchens. Fossil Oak tracks the trend for greys, Chalked Oak provides a whitewash effect and Espresso Oak has rich, brown coloration. European Oak with its natural grain is perfect for classic tastes. All are constructed from high quality 40mm staves and have the benefit of being pre-finished. The oak has been coated three times with a UV oil so it is ready to fit on site, dramatically reducing installation time and ensuring superior looks.

Showerwall has launched Sureseal, a purpose-designed trim system that is fitted at the base of its bathroom panelling to enhance waterproof protection, long term performance and facilitate easier cleaning in busy shower areas. It is very easy and quick to fit and does not add time onto the overall installation speed which is one of the key benefits of Showerwall compared to tiling. The new Sureseal system comprises a base trim and a cover trim, both in white. The system works by fitting the Sureseal base trim on to the shower tray and adding sealant, before sliding a Showerwall panel into place. This envelopes the base of the panel to give a four-point seal before the cover trim is clipped on providing a smooth and neat finish, while further enhancing the waterproof protection at the base of the panel.

Hansgrohe extends its popular Select technology to the wash basin with its new mixer range, Talis Select. The flow of water is turned on and off by pressing the Select button instead of using a conventional lever. hansgrohe’s Select technology is purely mechanical and works by means of an especially developed cartridge. It controls the water temperature and turns the flow of water on and off by turning the valve. This added convenience requires no electricity or other devices in the base cabinet. The new mixer joins the existing portfolio of hansgrohe Select showers and thermostatic controls to offer the complete Select bathroom. Talis Select along with over 200 products from the hansgrohe and AXOR ranges can be experienced at The Water Studio in London Clerkenwell.

Kapp-ing off good design Installing wall-hung sanitaryware is made simple with the versatile Geberit Duofix Kappa 82cm WC frame. Offering a wealth of benefits, the Geberit Duofix Kappa frame is a popular option due to the flexibility it offers installers as Product Manager Graham Aird explains. Although the frame sits at a minimum height of 82cm – the installation can be boxed up to the preferred shelf height, while the Duofix frame has flexibility in the feet too. This enables the height of the installation to be raised by up to 200mm, ensuring that the WC sits at the most comfortable height for the user. Step 1 – Mount Duofix WC frame to the wall Position the frame ensuring it is set at 82cm from finished floor

Step 4 – Protection Ensure you protect the flush pipe, drainage connection, the metal rods and flush plate section with the protection covers provided. This will protect and stop debris build up in the plastering and tiling phase of your installation.

Step 2 – Level and secure Ensure the frame is level and secure it using the provided fixings for both the back and floor.

Step 5 – You are now ready to plaster and tile your installation. When this is completed, you can cut down the protection housing flush with your tiles and remove the protection covers ready to fix the WC.

Step 6 – Install WC and flush plate Using the WC fixings provided by Geberit or your WC manufacturer, push the WC onto the metal rods and fasten the pan. Turn on the isolation valve and fit the flush plate for that finishing touch.

Step 3 - Connect Connect the drainage and the isolation valve to the water supply.

Further enhancing the user experience and the design credentials of the bathroom, when the WC is being used the lid has complete clearance of the flush plate to make activation easier. The versatility of the Geberit Duofix Kappa 82cm WC frame continues through to the finishing touches, due to its compatibility with a wide range of stylish flush plates.

RINNAI: SPACE HEATER RANGE, EASY TO INSTALL, TROUBLE FREE LONG LIFE WARMTH – NEW ADDITIONS Rinnai have added to its range of Energysaver gas fired space heaters which are designed specifically for use in schools, community centres, libraries, conservatories, churches and other large indoor spaces. The range has seen many thousands of installations over the past several years - trouble-free, easy to install and cost effective and efficient operation and performance. The recent additions to the range are the Rinnai Energysaver 559FT and a new streamlined look to the popular Energysaver 309FT. Sporting very sleek casing, the heaters

simply blend into the background in line with the need of modern interior aesthetics while offering exceptionally high efficiencies in operation and subsequently reduced running costs. Changes to the Energysaver 559T have been made to the operation board which is now an easy to use touchcontrol pad sited conveniently and discreetly on top of the appliance, (rather than on the front with a flip up cover). The unit is also supplied with a child lock to eliminate any problem of small hands tampering with the controls. Add to these advantages are the timer function and eco mode combined with the new unit’s ability to heat big spaces very fast. The 559FT has an input of 6.4kW and output of 5.2kW. The streamlined unit measures 554mm x 750mm x 250mm. The Rinnai Energysaver 309FT, like the 559FT, sports a similar sleek casing and

The units feature fully modulating burners so heat output and energy input is reduced as the space warms up. The Rinnai Energysaver range comprises fanned convection-powered flue models that exceed seasonal thermal heating guidance under Building Regs Part L. In a building with high vaulted ceilings, with conventional convector heaters, the heat will immediately rise to the ceiling. With the Energysaver range Rinnai has successfully come up with a solution that heats from the floor up and by modulating gas usage in relation to room temperature, provides unparalleled levels of comfort combined with efficiency. Natural Gas usage has been pegged at 0.31m3 while LPG consumption is 0.26kg/hr. Also available is the Energysaver 1004T with its impressive input of 11.6kW and outputs 10.23kW. Its measurements are 670mm x 930mm x 315mm and it has energy efficiencies of 96% under the guidance of Part L 2014. This puts it in the top rank of space heaters in its class. Like the Energy Saver 559FT and 309FT, the 1004T heater is also suitable for central timer control. This feature allows the building manager to run any number of Rinnai space heaters off a central time clock providing heat to the largest of spaces. The Energysaver Multi controller is not limited to single Energysavers as the flexibility of the system guarantees units can be mixed and matched to satisfy even the most unique of buildings. Rinnai Energysaver units are very easy to install as they do not need expensive and extensive ductwork, nor do they involve the necessity to run domestic heating circuits for radiators or pipework to boilers. Grundfos ALPHA3 perfectly in balance The new Grundfos ALPHA3 redefines what a small domestic circulator can do. Filled with useful features and robust hardware, the circulator raises the bar for efficiency and reliability in domestic circulators, even in the toughest systems. When combined with the ALPHA Reader the ALPHA3 uses a light sensor to read data communication from the pump and send it to a smart device. The installer then follows some easy steps to hydronically balance the heating system. This solution means that complex data collection and calculations are done automatically in the GO Balance app. This is a huge improvement on existing market solutions as time and costs are substantially reduced as the ability to read key data remotely benefits installers and homeowners alike, and a correctly balanced domestic radiator or underfloor heating system can generate savings ranging from 7% to 20% on the heating bill. The savings don’t end there as with an energy efficiency index of just 0.15, the Grundfos ALPHA3 is the most energy-efficient circulator in its class, it analyses the pattern of use and automatically adjusts the power output down to as little as 3W when the demand is low, offering an energy saving of 87% compared to regular pumps. So welcome to the market’s most reliable and durable circulator, with the added benefit of substantial savings on heating bills through quick and easy hydronic balancing. Making it as easy as 1-2-ALPHA3. www.mclink.co.uk/966-581 ENQUIRY-Card 581

Zilmet app takes the pressure out of vessel calculations

Johnson & Starley shine in consumer report

Internationally-renowned expansion vessel manufacturer Zilmet has created a free mobile phone app that allows plumbers and installers to quickly calculate the required size of vessel for their installation. The app, which is free to download and available for both iPhone and Android, takes the boiler output and system volume and calculates a suitable vessel capacity and pre-charge pressure. Stuart Gizzi, director at Zilmet UK, said: “Our printed vessel calculators have been hugely popular amongst plumbers and installers, becoming an essential for every toolbox, van and classroom. “We have given out thousands of calculators over the last six years and through our continued commitment to provide easy-to-use products to our customers, we have chosen to transform our existing calculator into a free app.

The October 2016 Which? Report into the ‘Best & Worst Boiler Brands’ made for good reading for Johnson & Starley, with the well-established company achieving fourth place amongst tough competition! This was the first year that Johnson & Starley have been included in the Which? Survey, with the organisation saying they had made “an impressive survey debut” With a history of innovation spanning almost 100 years, Johnson & Starley developed the QuanTec range of High Efficiency condensing boilers using the latest state of the art boiler technology. Designed with reliability, performance, outstanding efficiency and long term value for money as key considerations the QuanTec range also included isothermic and full heat condense stainless steel heat exchangers with ‘cool door’ technology, low carbon and low NOx levels and pluming reduced to almost invisible levels.

Rinnai, the UK’s leading manufacturing supplier of hot water heating systems, is sponsoring one of the biggest names and contenders in rugby league - Widnes Vikings. The Rinnai sponsorship with the club, which has achieved its highest ever Super League position this year, will ensure the Rinnai logo and brand name is displayed on the back of all Widnes players’ shorts. We share a common belief and approach in values of excellence, innovation and responsibility to the wider community. “Rinnai is a worldwide brand name in its field and has taken some major global sponsorships – including the Queensland Reds, The World Club World Cup event held January this year in Tokyo, the World Ice Skating Championships and the US Nascar

Holiday Inn Express uses innovative hybrid air conditioning A new 250-bedroom hotel has become the first in the UK to use an innovative hybrid air conditioning technology that removes the need to install leak detection equipment in occupied rooms. The Holiday Inn Express Birmingham City Centre in central Birmingham is using Mitsubishi Electric’s Hybrid VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) system to keep guests comfortable in a controllable, energy efficient way, whilst still offering the full flexibility of design and installation that VRF air conditioning is synonymous with. “We needed reliable and effective air conditioning that is easy to use from the guest’s perspective but which is also more cost effective for the hotel moving forward as it removes the annual maintenance costs associated with a leak detection system”, explained Mark Foster, Managing Director of Centre Island, which will manage the hotel.

“The added advantage of using Mitsubishi Electric equipment is that we can control the whole system centrally, which minimises energy use for the business whilst still allowing guests to have individual control within their rooms. This also ensures we can stop rooms being heated or cooled when they are empty”. The design for the air conditioning system was put together by SISK Design and Build Contractors who worked with Building Services Consultancy DW Pointer. Together they committed to providing a VRF system that did not need the significant cost of adding leak detection units in all of the bedrooms. “We proposed Hybrid VRF as it

completely removes leak detection in occupied spaces whilst still offering the flexibility of a VRF system,” said Brian Inett of John Sisk & Son. “We were already aware of the Hybrid system and had been looking for a suitable project to use it on, so this was an ideal solution for the client, especially as it does away with the annual costs of leak detection maintenance.” The 18-storey hotel in Holliday Street, Birmingham, which was designed by Liverpool-based KKA Architecture, will use 16 outdoor condensing units to operate 250 slim ducted indoor units in a clever design that has one outdoor unit serving one wing on each of two

Heating & Plumbing 63 floors to minimise the refrigerant pipework within the building. “Hybrid VRF uses water to transfer heating and cooling around the building, which removes the need for refrigerant leak detection in occupied spaces,” said Dennis Winter of installer Dragon Air Conditioning Ltd. “But there are also other benefits to the project as the system is being installed in phases which matches the way the hotel is being built.” The hotel, which is to open in April 2017 will employ around 60 people when complete and forms part of the Arena Central redevelopment scheme in Birmingham City Centre which will also be home to the new HSBC headquarters. “There are a lot of hotels that are now coming to terms with how to keep guests comfortable whilst complying with new legislation on refrigerants and leak detection,” explained Mitsubishi Electric’s Mark Grayston Senior Product Manager for VRF & Hybrid VRF. “This is why we have developed the Hybrid VRF system and this new development points the way to delivering the highest levels of guest comfort without adding significantly to install and maintenance costs.” Further details on the innovative, award-winning system can be found at the dedicated website: https://hybridvrf.co.uk. www.mclink.co.uk/966-597 ENQUIRY-Card 597

66 Floors, Internal Walls & Ceilings . View our publication online at www.McDermottPublishing.com . October 2016 . Mapei UK have recently helped complete a flooring refurbishment project in Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal Departure costing approximately £2million. DMC Contracts carried out the installation, leading the design between Mapei and Gatwick Airport to deliver a robust flooring system that would tolerate the demands of a busy airport terminal. As the UK’s second largest airport and the most efficient single-runway airport in the world, Gatwick Airport required a screed that could endure the high volume of footfall which it encounters daily. Mapei specified a screed containing their Topcem binder, also including Mapefibre NS12 polypropylene fibres, to replace up to 9,000m2 of the previous flooring in the North Terminal Departures. Topcem, which carries an EC1 rating, produces a perfect screed to use prior to the installation of any flooring where rapid drying is required – allowing light foot traffic after just 12 hours, ensuring the airport experienced minimal disruption. Mapefibre NS12 helps to create a strong matrix

Photography courtesy of Gatwick Airport

Mapei UK Products used for refurbishment of Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal within the screed which is more resistant to the stresses induced by the setting and

hardening process. Once laid, the floor was left for 28 days before it was drop-hammer

tested, where it received a Category A rating. 400 x 400 porcelain tiles and

600 x 300 conglomerate tiles were then laid with Mapei’s grey coloured Granirapid (which also carries an EC1 rating) – a rapid setting, high strength, flexible tile adhesive suitable for a busy airport environment. The floor tiles were grouted with Mapei’s popular Ultracolour Plus Grout in the ‘Cement Grey’ shade (113). With Gatwick’s moving annual total passenger numbers recently reaching over 41 million, the airport required an abrasion resistant flooring for some 400m2 of the baggage area floors. Mapei’s Ultratop Industrial was specified because of its excellent abrasion and wearing resistance to the high volume of traffic in the area. To prevent staining, the Ultratop Industrial was sealed with Mapecoat I 600 W For more information on Mapei resilient products, other products or training days, please visit www.mapei.co.uk, email info@mapei.co.uk or tel. +44 (0)121 508 6970.
