Eureka!

Archimedes and the Cavity Wall At the junction of a floor and an external cavity wall, the use of lightweight insulating block and cavity insulation extending below DPC level are now recognised methods of helping reduce thermal loss around the perimeter of a building. The Building Regulations require that all such arrangements prevent dampness from reaching the inner leaf above DPC level that must remain dry at all times. The cavity insulation used within a cavity must not absorb water or promote capillary behaviour. However its presence extending downwardly around the base of a building reduces the open cavity space available at the bottom of the external wall which is where gravitating

water ends up. As the full fill insulation cannot absorb water, one must consider to what extent accumulating water will be displaced and rise to a greater extent as a result? Could it bridge the DPC level? Is the cavity bottomed-out with concrete? Does the surrounding ground drain well (clay?) Is the structure surrounded with hard surfaces? The severe 2013/2014 winter weather overwhelmed many cavity walls. Rains saturated external skins and then continued without interruption causing water to gravitate extensively and reservoir at the base of external walls. Cavity Trays of Yeovil has a range of DPC cavitray solutions to guard against such

occurrences and a range of caviweeps to evacuate water out of the wall. Wherever an impervious medium fills a cavity, the usual water accommodation area is reduced compared with an unrestricted open cavity. An appropriate cavitray can protect the building, permit it to drain, and allow the cavity insulation to perform as intended. The Gloves Are Off For Sadolin Superdec u

A video showcasing the outstanding qualities of Sadolin Superdec uses a novel method to demonstrate the product’s flexibility. Rubber gloves were painted in Sadolin Superdec and then after 16 hours drying time the gloves were stretched and manipulated to show how the product moves once it’s dry. Gloves that had been painted

over two years ago are also featured to show that even after a lengthy period the product remains flexible. Such qualities mean Sadolin Superdec can move with wood, contracting and expanding when the weather is either cold or hot, removing the issue of flaking or peeling. With this benefit Sadolin Superdec offers up to 8 years protection against the elements.

Sadolin Superdec is d unique as it is self-priming and undercoating, reducing the need of an extra product on new wood. It also requires little preparation, and can be applied over previously decorated services. As the product also offers a solid, paint like finish it is very forgiving and is therefore ideal for use on visually poorer quality timber surfaces.

Furthermore, where a translucent stain can In 2014 picking sometimes highlight blemishes, Sadolin Superdec as an opaque stain can help to hide timber imperfections. The video can be viewed at https://youtu.be/wsVIgs88wQ Sharon Smith, Sadolin Brand Manager, said: “Sadolin Superdec is one of our most popular ranges within the Sadolin brand, this is due to all the benefits highlighted above and how remarkably easy it is to use. “Time and time again we hear positive feedback from people who have not only used They also Sadolin Superdec for the first time, but also customers who don’t use anything else. “With over 300 shades available in the colour palette, decorators can choose stunning colour combinations and at the same time have the reassurance of the very best in wood protection.” As well as the short glove test video, another film, entitled ‘The Sadolin Colour Palette – Great Shades And Wood

Protection As Standard’ goes more in-depth into the product’s attributes - and showcases the sheer range of colour opportunities available. The video is available to view on the Sadolin website at www.sadolin.co.uk or on the Sadolin Woodcare YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/Sadoli nWoodcare Both videos are supported by the Sadolin Superdec Colour Guide, designed to give decorators the complete picture on how this opaque wood protection product offers the freedom to transform wood. Nikki Cosgrove, Crown Trade Brand Manager, said: “Crown Trade’s High Performance Gloss for Metal - supplied in a wide-range of colours - is intended for use wherever a durable, long-lasting, high sheen finish is required. “The system is easy to apply and has a premium formulation that provides a decorative finish, which protects for years against the most challenging elements. “Depending on the nature of the project, one or two coats will offer up to ten years’ metal protection in a standard Crown Trade high performance system. “The gloss can be applied onto previously painted surfaces, which need to first be cleaned and spot primed, while new metal requires cleaning and a preparatory coat of Crown Trade High Build Rust Inhibiting Metal Primer. “The high level of protection can be extended further still, for up to fifteen years, if one or two coats of Crown Trade

High Build Micaceous Iron Oxide are applied beneath the gloss top coat. “Offering an effective barrier against corrosion, Crown Trade High Build Micaceous Iron Oxide is an excellent intermediate coat and can even be used as a topcoat if colour and sheen are less important factors than protection Decorators can find out more about Crown Trade’s Protective Coatings and much more, by visiting the new Crown Trade website www.crowntrade.co.uk.

Protect and repair damp chimneys with Safeguard Europe is applied to brickwork in one coat by brush or roller and lasts for up to 30 years, penetrating the brickwork deeply to form a breathable barrier against water. Internally, the Dryzone Express Replastering System will deal with chimney breasts that are contaminated and stained with hard-to-block hygroscopic salts much faster than alternative methods such as waterproofing slurries and renders. These are typically applied in multiple coats over several days while the Dryzone System can enable redecoration within a day. The system consists of Dryshield Cream and Drygrip Adhesive. Dryshield Cream is a breathable, saltresistant water-repellent that weakens the crystal strength of salts forming in or at the masonry surface as damp evaporates. Easy to apply by brush or roller, the cream acts as a primer for Drygrip Adhesive but also penetrates the masonry structure deeply so as to form a durable, robust bond. Developed for ‘dab’ fixing plasterboard directly to masonry surfaces, Drygrip Adhesive forms a strong and longlasting bond and is resistant to both salts and damp. Once fixed, the boards can be tape-jointed and skimmed as in ordinary drylining situations. If plasterboarding is inappropriate,

Chimneys are vulnerable to rain penetration, especially in winter, and Safeguard Europe — the UK’s leading specialist in dampand waterproofing, and masonry repairs — delivers comprehensive solutions and superb technical support for both external and internal remedial treatments. Its suite of high quality products not only deals with the causes of damp but also its effects: masonry and mortar decay, and spoilt internal decorations resulting from contaminated plaster. Externally, and following repointing work, Stormdry provides swift, effective yet invisible coating that will protect chimneys from rain penetration. Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream is a colourless water-repellent cream that

Safeguard Europe also offers Renderguard Gold for re-rendering. A high specification additive, Renderguard Gold improves the workability of the render and maintains its vapour permeability while being resistant to salts, so the wall will dry out without the new decorative surface being spoilt by hygroscopic salts or residual moisture rising to the surface. Where repairs to chimney DPC trays are required, Dryzone cream or Dryrod damp-proofing rods can offer simple remedies that are quick to install. Dryzone Cream is a BBA-approved and patented silane/siloxane material that forms a DPC in brick, coursed stone, rubble infill and cavity walls. Unlike other chemical DPCs, it is not injected under pressure, so not only is it up to three times faster to install than alternative chemical injection systems, but also presents less risk of waste or spillage. Recognised by both the GPA and IGL insurance-backed guarantee schemes, Dryzone is also safer in use because it is odourless, non-caustic, solvent-free and non-flammable. Platon sealed system supplied for iconic fire brigade building conversion Triton has supplied 3,000 m2 of BBA certified Platon P8 cavity drain membrane to waterproof several basements at the iconic West Midlands Fire Brigade building at Lancaster Circus in Birmingham. The membrane forms part of a Type C drained waterproofing system (as defined in BS 8102 2009) to the area, which is being converted to residential accommodation for 463 students from Aston University.

The system is being installed by Triton approved contractors, Protectahome, working for Watkin Jones Construction. Cavity drain membranes work by allowing any water ingress to continue to enter the building through the walls, but then controlling it and diverting it down the wall to a perimeter drainage conduit. In this project, the conduit diverts the water to one of 10 sumps, each housing a Triton Aqua Pump Pro Plus kit (each comprising mains powered and battery back up pumps).

Moisture had been penetrating into parts of the basement for several years through the wall/floor joint and various cracks in the original floor slab. Although large floor areas have been excavated to allow for greater head height and replaced with new floor slabs, many of the original floors have been left in situ. As the Platon system allows moisture to enter the structure there is no hydrostatic pressure on existing floor slabs and no

need to replace them. Triton’s technical team has worked closely with the architect, main contractor and specialist basement contractor from design inception through to overseeing installation and testing of the system.

Saint-Gobain Weber transforms Weir houses for East Ayrshire District Council

External Wall Insulation (EWI) by SaintGobain Weber has been specified for the thermal and aesthetic upgrade of Weir properties owned by East Ayrshire District Council. The weber.therm XM EWI system is being applied in a twophase programme of over 350 homes, a mix of tenancy and owner occupancy. Phase one is now complete and phase two, some 248 properties, is now underway.

Many new construction methods were introduced to alleviate the chronic housing shortage immediately after World War II and in Scotland one of the most active design teams was that of the Weir Housing Corporation. Challenged to deliver significant quantities of housing, they introduced a variety of ‘prefab’ system buildings. The Weir system initially utilised steel and concrete sections to provide fast-assembly build programmes but when the material supply issues restricted capacity they moved toward timber buildings, many of which survive today. The timberframe Weir properties are poorly insulated and expensive to heat. East Ayrshire District Council’s project has been led by senior architect Ernie Tew, who not only managed the technical elements of the scheme but also produced and managed the financial grant submission. “We wanted a cost effective

solution for externally refurbishing these houses that would enable the upgrade to be carried out without having to temporarily relocate our residents. The system had to create a watertight and thermally efficient building envelope, reduce CO emissions, cut fuel consumption and change the external appearance of the properties,” said Mr Tew. Saint-Gobain Weber calculated a greatly improved target U-value of 0.29 W/m²K from a preapplication value of 2.1 W/m²K. Funding for this programme has been delivered through the HEEPS private/public partnership between the Council and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), the UK’s broadest-based energy company. Skyform Specialist Contracts Limited, Glasgow, a multidiscipline structural repair and construction company, and a Weber

recommended EWI installer, has been appointed by East Ayrshire District Council to carry out the application work. The weber.therm XM EWI system chosen for these Weir properties features expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation which is mechanically fixed to the timber structure. The main insulation thickness is 90mm but 110mm has also been applied to level some façades whilst in the gable ends 70mm EPS has been used to achieve a level consistency. The render process requires two passes of weber.rend LAC cementitious render into which the fibreglass reinforcement meshcloth is embedded to give a robust render coat. The second render coat used in this project is weber.rend PTC, a polymer-modified, cementbased mortar which acts as the dry dash colour-base and adhesive on which the selected aggregate blends are carried. The dry-dash

stones are then applied to give the very best weather and impact protection to this multi-layered process. For more information about this project, or for technical support, please contact Saint-Gobain Weber on 08703 330 070, or visit w w w. n e t w e b e r. c o . u k . Customers in Ireland should call 028 9335 2999 or visit www.weber.ie A free download of the new weber.app for iPhone and iPad users is also available from iTunes and from Google Play for Android smartphones and tablet users. Building Information Modelling, or BIM for short, has the capability of bringing together all the information about every component of a building in one place. It enables the sharing of this information to be accessible to anyone for any purpose. This effective way of integrating all aspects of a building’s design will show construction savings by eliminating the risks of mistakes and reducing abortive costs. “With BIM becoming the prevalent way of ensuring your products are specified for Government projects by 2016 along with the significant amount of projects we carry out within the public sector, we thought it good practice to establish ourselves within the BIM modelling

giving our products greater visibility to specifiers.” Explained Yeoman Shield’s Sales Director, Stuart Russell. Yeoman Shield products that are listed in the NBS National BIM Library are corner protection angles, door & wall protection panels, fire rated door edge protectors, hand rail and protection rail and can be found on the NBS National BIM Library website. “We hope that BIM will serve to expand our already buoyant business in the public sector market and we look forward to increasing the Yeoman Shield BIM products as necessary in the future.” Concluded Stuart.

fire Industrial food processing floor New solution by Remmers

A wide range of Altro flooring and wall cladding has been used in the newly reconstructed Malvern Fire Station, helping to create a facility that can withstand the demands of modern fire-fighting, and an aesthetically-pleasing working environment. The fire station needed to be upgraded on all counts, as Alan Jones, Capital Projects Manager at Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, explained. “The building failed to meet operational needs, necessitating redesign and investment. It had also reached the end of its economic life with many failing elements; these included wall and floor finishes throughout. AltroCrete PU Fast-Track is a 5-9mm textured floor made for heavy duty areas of potential spillage and increased temperature range.

A new industrial flooring system has been installed to the 2000m2 extension at C&G Foods manufacturing plant in Longford, Ireland. Remmers Crete SL was applied in combination with Remmers PUR Color Top 2KM seal coat to provide a colour stable finish and a subsequent seal coat of Remmers PUR Aqua Top 2KM SG, with the inclusion of a polymer bead to provide an R11 level of slip resistance with a silk gloss floor finish. The system was installed by specialist flooring contractor Larsen Contracts who worked closely with the main contractor, Gem Construction to allow the installation of the floor whilst other fitting out activities were also being carried out, optimising the overall program.

Viva La Rollution!

Luxury Vinyl Tiles are becoming an increasingly popular flooring choice within residential and commercial properties due to their durability and attractive designs. also has a long working time of 2 hours but a short waiting time of just 10 minutes allowing the flooring to be laid quickly.

Schönox iFloor is a revolutionary new system incorporating a unique rollable adhesive providing a fast and clean installation ensuring the mess and waiting times of standard flooring adhesives are a thing of the past. Supplied in kit form, Schönox iFloor contains Schönox KH Fix Primer, primer roller, iFloor Adhesive and adhesive roller. The kits are available in

two sizes, each containing the required components to fit either 50m2 or 125m2 of LVT’s. Using Schönox iFloor has many advantages over traditional flooring adhesives with speed and ease of application being the key benefits, as both the primer and adhesive are roller applied bringing an end to time consuming and back breaking trowelling. The system

Roller applying the adhesive in thin layers eliminates the problem of excessive adhesive residues and stops any residual adhesive moving up through the joints leaving both the vinyl surface and the installers hands clean. The thin layer also forms a flat adhesive bed rather than the adhesive notches of a trowel applied product ensuring the risk of point load deformation is dramatically reduced. The immediate bonding of the vinyl allows instant loading, an advantage when additional work is to be carried out in the area. Schönox iFloor is also ideal for repair work as damaged tiles can be easily removed and replaced without any further surface preparation.

Introducing Dunlop’s new ProCover Uncoupling Mat – the fail-safe floor tiling solution

Discovering cracks in a new tiling installation is a tradesman’s worst nightmare, which is why Dunlop has launched the innovative ProCover Uncoupling Mat system providing complete

protection against failures. ProCover gives tradesman the confidence to tile onto difficult floors at risk from stresses and lateral movement by acting as a flexible buffer layer between tile and floor. This protects against the different rates of contraction and expansion experienced by the floor and tile layer depending on moisture and temperature. This is a particular problem for floors such as new sand and cement screeds, underfloor heating and timber floors which have previously required overlaying with plywood. Without an uncoupling mat, tiles can crack and de-bond as the background moves, potentially costing time and money in repair and recompense. ProCover is easy to install, comes

in handy five metre rolls, and has pre-marked grid-lines for effortless cutting. It can also be butt-jointed with no overlap, meaning no tape is needed. Furthermore, this innovative product is only 1mm thick and super-slim, preventing excessive height build-up, and comes with a unique 10 year guarantee when used as part of a suitable system of Dunlop tile adhesive and grout. Debi Boulton, brand manager at Dunlop, said: “By using the ProCover Uncoupling Mat, tradesman can tile onto difficult surfaces in confidence, safe in the knowledge that the system will protect against unwanted movement, stresses and strains that could cause disastrous failures.

“Throw away your plywood overlay and try ProCover today.” For more information visit www.dunlopadhesives.com/procover.

Introducing the all new Greenstar i from Worcester

Leading manufacturer, Worcester, Bosch Group has unveiled the latest gas-fired combi boiler to join its market leading range. The Greenstar i boasts enhanced performance and A-rated annual efficiency, alongside a host of features derived from installer feedback. Improving on the popular features of the Greenstar i Junior which remains the UK’s best-selling condensing boiler, the new model is available in combi outputs of 25kW and 30kW, and has been developed to deliver improved water performance in small to medium sized properties with one bathroom. Ahead of the forthcoming ErP Requirements, Worcester’s new addition is fully compliant thanks amongst other things to the inclusion of a low energy circulating pump. The modulating pump within the boiler will vary the flow rate through the boiler and heating system in relation to the number of open TRV’s. Additionally, the established WB3 silicon heat exchanger within the boiler has an extra-large surface area for enhanced heat exchange efficiency, while an optional ‘plug and play’ weather compensation kit makes it easy to add a level of climate control to the system.

In response to the challenge posed by frozen condensate in the winter months, the Greenstar i has been engineered to contain a larger condensate siphon – ensuring an uninsulated, externally routed condensate pipe connected to the new boiler will not freeze in sustained temperatures of -15°C for up to 48 hours. To simplify installation, the Greenstar i is delivered with a pre-assembled wall frame with positive ‘click’ engagement and mounting hooks; and with the same dimensions as the Greenstar i Junior, replacements will be simple. Additionally, all components within the boiler are serviceable from the front, and there is no requirement to dismount the boiler from the wall to service its expansion vessel, or to break the combustion chamber seal to access the fan. A Benchmark menu within the boiler control software also simplifies

completion of the Benchmark logbook. The Heatronic control panel showcases an all-improved interface, with text descriptions or error codes which are communicated through the enhanced control panel, enabling homeowners to communicate more effectively with engineers and installers. The Greenstar i is also available in a range of system variants, of 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 kW, enabling installers to provide precise sizes dependent on a property’s needs. The compact design also ensures the boiler’s suitability for a variety of locations including kitchens, utility rooms, bathrooms, airing cupboards, lofts or garages. The Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX condensing water heater is the first Rinnai product for the UK to combine the advanced technology of its wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one compact footprint. The design parameters of the Rinnai Infinity Solo, enables designers, installers and engineers to benefit from unique Rinnai technology in applications whereby it was not previously possible. For

instance the solo range will incorporate both 35kW and 54kW appliances, ensuring sites with a smaller gas meter can utilise such technologies. The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances that exist in today’s market. Because the cylinder is stainless steel it greatly reduces the weight compared to glass lined models, which makes transportation and installation a lot easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders available also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), which means the customer pays less to maintain the heat within the tank. One other benefit of the Solo utilising a stainless steel cylinder, is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glasslined equivalent as glass suffers

from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time. The 24kW-59.5kW Infinity Solo range is renewables compatible and supplied pre-fitted with a coil, meaning that the primary energy source will always be from renewable gains and the complementary Rinnai water heater will only apply the precise amount of gas to boost the difference in temperature. Rinnai manufactures the energy efficient Infinity range of gas fired continuous flow water heaters and space heaters. The Infinity brand carries the widest range of condensing water heaters on the market today with the most impressive efficiencies in operation, leading the field in technological innovation. Little Coombe Farm, down on the coast of Devon, is considered to offer the most comfortable and glamorous form of camping – or Glamping – possible: with two pairs of cedar clad yurts providing every creature comfort in a woodland setting overlooking a beautiful river valley and just in case the West Country weather isn’t warm enough, there’s even Timóleon’s underfloor heating to keep the glampers comfortable. Yew Yurt and Pheasant Yurt each comprise an eight metre diameter main structure containing the master bedroom suite, complete with shower room, toilet and spacious lounge/kitchen/diner, leading onto a four metre diameter satellite with the second bedroom as well as a wet room and across the dumbbell shaped floorplan, Timóleon’s LowBoard system – part of the manufacturer’s well proven range - has been installed to deliver controllable warmth within accommodation where radiators would look as out of place as a staircase. While the construction of the LowBoard panels helps keep overall floor depth to a minimum, Timóleon’s Technical Design

Service created an installation layout to respect the circular floor plan of the Yurts, able to deliver maximum efficiency from minimum pipe lengths. The seven pipe runs totalling 360 metres in length are connected back to one of Timóleon’s Axios compact manifolds which measures just 615 x 415 x 100 mm; and that is able to deliver a flow of 310llitres per hour. The system is designed to have a flow temperature of 550 C and a return temperature of 450 C; optimizing boiler performance. The LowBoard system has been laid over a suspended timber floor construction that has insulation within the void depth, while 22 mm thick wooden flooring covers the pipework that still allows good thermal transmission. A holiday magazine offered this description of the luxury experience available at the Little Coombe Farm yurts, located near Dittisham: “Think woodland walks, hooting owls and back to nature relaxation – and combine with the most comfortable place you can think of – offering everything from dishwasher and Wi-Fi to en-suite shower and underfloor heating. So you’ll be toasty

Yesss Electrical make sense of the changes made to the heating market Neil Birdsall, product manager at leading electrical wholesaler, YESSS Electrical, discusses how installers can make the most of the opportunities presented by recent changes to the heating market The Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) pays participants that generate and use renewable heat to heat their buildings, and is designed to help the UK reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet targets for reducing the effects of climate change. Over 6,000 households have already been accredited by the scheme, but in order to maximise the opportunity, we are encouraging installers to use the Government’s new RHI Calculator when visiting customers to show them how much money they could save when

switching to renewable energy sources. Through entering just a few figures, homeowners can now instantly be shown how much money they could be paid by signing up to the scheme and installing technology such as solar panels or ground source heat pumps. Installers should also promote the use of smart meters in order to help save energy. Allowing customers to access real-time information on how much energy they are consuming, and more importantly how much this is costing them, is a very useful tool and can save up to £75 a year. When it comes to heating the home, it is useful to ensure that electronic thermostats and radiators feature builtin thermostatic controls. Switching to a modern, completely electric system can

further reduce energy costs and overall usage, and installers are encouraged to share their knowledge of electric heating technology with their customers. With rising energy bills and a raft of challenging legislation driving the demand for renewable, low carbon alternatives to gas, oil and LPG heating, the time is right for installers and specifiers to investigate the alternative solutions that can be offered to consumers. How can ‘smart design’ box off the Legionella threat with hot water heating products? Legionella control and risk avoidance are rightly regarded as a ‘must’ for product and system design consideration within the heating and hot water industry. The whole supply chain - manufacturers, distribution, contractors and end-users dread the thought of having a Legionella problem at any of their sites. It is one problem where avoidance and prevention are the only sensible action. Modern lifestyles means that we are using more and more hot water – and it is even overtaking the provision of heating in some instances. Wall-hung Know-how with Geberit – because the fitting is easy by Graham Aird, Product Manager There is simply no escaping it – the trend for wall-hung sanitaryware is growing fast, so getting up to speed on the best techniques available for fitting it will ensure that you can do the job with confidence.

Geberit has all the Know-how you need when it comes to fitting wall-hung sanitaryware - after all we've been providing sanitary systems for more than 125 years. It is this Know-how that makes installing wall-hung sanitaryware far less complex than you might think. In fact, opting for wall-hung can actually reduce installation time whenever the Geberit Duofix framing system is used. Of course, if you’ve never fitted wall-hung sanitaryware before then doing so can be a little dauting. Taking a few hours out of your working week to receive a spot of free training at the our Training Academy will work wonders though, giving you all the Know-how you need - plus you'll be rewarded with a free frame and flush plate to use on your next job. Not only is the Geberit Duofix easy to install the system is flexible too - suitable for partition wall installations, inwall installations, in stud-walls

in lightweight construction, and pre-wall installations. The ease of installation of the Geberit Duofix has been paramount in the product development and there are a number of neat little features that make Geberit frames unique. Geberit frames can be used pre-wall or in stud walls, fixing directly into the wall with brackets. But to make life even easier when fixing to a solid wall we also have a solution called Geberit system rail. The rail is simply fixed to the floor and wall with screws and then the Duofix frame's legs slot in and are clamped down with the brackets to provide a secure installation. You may not be aware that all our frames have self-impeding feet making changing the height of the frame a one man job. Simply loosen the bolts, step on the feet, pull the frame up or down to adjust the height and re-tighten the bolts to secure. The feet hold the Duofix frame at the required height

while you adjust it. And don't forget our depth adjustable drainage bends at the back of our frames - we know that all installations are different and this clever feature means that you won't end up with tension in your pipework. So in just a few simple-tofollow steps, wall-hung sanitaryware can be installed leaving behind a neat finish that your customers will love, as this pre-wall example shows: Step 1 Measure and mark out the wall and floor, taking into account the finished floor levels. You can now drill the 2 wall and 2 floor fixing holes.

The frame can now be adjusted to the correct fitting height, by placing your feet onto the floor brackets and lifting the frame to the desired height using the self-impeding feet. Step 2 At this stage the prewall brackets are fitted to the frame. The wall brackets can then be adjusted once in position to ensure a level installation and then fixed in position. There are also plastic packing nuts that are secured on to the rod to avoid any movement and help provide a secure fixing.

Step 2

pan. Then turn on the water supply via the integral isolating valve and set the flush volume.

Step 3

Step 4 Fit the flush plate, paying careful attention to adjusting the push rods correctly to ensure correct dual flush operation.

Step 4

Step 1

Step 3 Once the Duofix frame is firmly in position you can make the plumbing and drainage connections. The boxing and plasterboard can now be constructed and the tiling can be completed. At this stage you should fit the WC

This can still be seen today above the main entrance way and why it is known as ‘Elephant House’. Due to the special architectural interest of this Victorian Building, it was granted Grade II Listing in 2009. In 2013 Hawkins\Brown was commissioned to draw up plans to change the use of the building to accommodate offices. In such an old building, with the addition of the heritage listing, the project needed to be carefully considered ensuring a sustainable, comfortable and safe working environment was created. The original single glazed windows presented a problem; they were unable to be replaced, they were draughty and did little to combat noise from the busy roads outside. Bespoke designed secondary glazing was the solution to achieving high levels of noise attenuation and thermal insulation, as well as being regularly used on listed buildings and those in conservation areas. Hörmann's HST side-sliding garage door combines style and innovation

The latest advances in garage door technology can be found in the side-sliding HST sectional from Hörmann, which offers unique features for special fitting situations. An ideal fit if headroom is limited, the HST is perfect for creating a style statement while maintaining high levels of security. Side-sliding doors recess quietly and ever-so-smoothly into tracks along the garage wall, offering an excellent alternative to the traditional sectional door. Precise and easy door travel is achieved with Hörmann's unique twin rollers, which make the HST one of the most stable sidesliding sectionals on the market.

The open-ended aluminium floor rail is easy to keep free from leaves and debris, all while guiding the door panels safely and securely – an essential feature for both the manual and automated versions.

feature means that a simple press of the handle or handset will open the door to a selected point. Therefore, an alternative separate pedestrian entrance is created, giving the end user the ultimate in convenience.

PU-insulated panels help to achieve a U-value of up to 1.9 W/(m2.K) for the fitted door, while built-in finger trap protection and a double automatic safety cut-out ensure its safe operation.

Naturally, a wide range of decorative options are available, from different styles of windows to textured surface finishes and assorted handles - all of which can add to the door’s stunning kerb-side appeal.

Not only is Hörmann’s HST innovative in its design, including its multiple security and safety aspects, it also boasts the world's first handle actuated, automatic wicket door function. This unique

Invisible Innovation from Aspex Aspex, one of the UK’s leading door and ironmongery companies, has launched the Novista Riser door range, which are designed to ‘disappear’ within the wall construction. The Novista Riser doorset includes a steel doorframe, which is supplied pre-cut and mitred for easy assembly on site and which, when fitted, is totally concealed within either a stud or block wall rendering the door virtually invisible, when closed, as there are no obtrusive architraves. Novista Riser doorsets are available as double or singles with either a three- or a foursided frame. The four-sided frames are particularly suitable for use on riser doors and allow skirting boards to run uninterrupted below the door, thereby allowing the door to blend in almost seamlessly with the adjacent walls. The threesided frames are suitable for storerooms and cleaner’s cupboards and the height of these can be adjusted to align with adjacent riser doors. The Novista Riser doorsets are ideal for use in hotels as bathroom access doors, or risers,

and also in commercial office buildings and apartments. Ashley Burberry, Managing Director of Aspex UK said, “This new range demonstrates our commitment to providing our customers with the highest quality design solutions and helps to overcome the problem on many developments of unsightly riser cupboards. We have demonstrated over recent years that we are happy to, either partner with Europe’s best-in-class manufacturers, or to develop our own products to meet the requirements of architects, designers and developers alike.”

Lumi sheds new light on windows Apeer, the leading edge manufacturer of composite door sets, has entered the windows market with a groundbreaking new, structurally bonded window and door glazing system.

The new Novista Riser doorset range is designed, manufactured and tested to very exacting standards. The doorsets are available with a fire rating of either FD30 or FD60, with both standard and concealed hinges, in either a three or four sided frame. The Novista Riser doorset range is supplied in sections making the product easy to store, move around site and install. The system is very versatile and can be used within either taped & jointed or plaster skimmed walls.

A first in its field, the radically styled new Lumi collection is set to bring the seamless sophistication of iconic glass structure to the residential housing market. The design-led range of frameless windows, doors, entrance glazing, French doors and a bi-fold door system is being launched at Grand Designs (May 2-10, ExCel, London). Offering a frame-free, 'wall of light profile' the triple glazed Lumi collection is distinguished by its fused ceramic colour border. This is available in eight different exterior colours and eight further interior finishes. "Entering the glazing market is a natural next step for us. We've in depth knowledge of the sector and producing a fibre glass window collection is an obvious progression for our business" said Asa McGillian. As the md of Apeer he has been the driving force behind the company's innovative all-GRP composite doors and contemporary Modo collection. Lumi itself has been in development for more than two-and-a-half years and represents an investment of nearly a million pounds for the company. Said Asa: "I knew that if we were going to enter the windows market I wanted to do it with a radically different product. One that would offer an alternative to anything else out there and would appeal to consumers looking for the kind of cutting edge

design with which they could make a lifestyle statement." As well as being available in a full suite of matching designs, Lumi has a host of construction and performance benefits: stormproof design with flush proportional glazing (the double rebate is completely hidden) 50mm triple glazed (6-4-4) toughened glass for maximum insulation and noise reduction 80mm GRP double rebate frame offers exceptional U-values - as low as 0.7w/m2k on fixed glazing panels Triple gasket seal Double euro groove allows for versatile hardware options, concealed hinges and window locks High security Winkhaus lock system Kitemark glass and Kitemark Lumi composite front door options Fab & Fix hardware Variable clear glazing options Concealed hinges offer smooth action, high weight load opening and wide opening Lumi comes with a 10 year guarantee (structural, mechanical and colour fast). Said Asa McGillian:"What we have done is apply our leading edge technology skills to the windows sector to offer homeowners an exciting new alternative to PVC, hardwood, timber-aluminium composites and powder coated aluminium options."

Norvik New Build Helps Buck the Trend Norvik New Build specialises in the supply of made to measure windows and doors to new build residential and commercial properties as well as supplying Builders Merchants, and echoing the upward trend in the wider construction arena, is pleased to report a sales increase.

As well as the organic growth in the sector, Norvik has recently been winning more contracts thanks to its ability to supply a wide range of products. This is as a direct result of the trend towards vendor rationalisation where more companies are choosing to work with one trusted supplier rather than an array. “The ability to supply a wide range also enables us to stay ahead of market trends,” explains Rob Stewart, Head of Sales and Marketing for Norvik. “There is currently an increase in demand for more colours for example, so the wide palette of colours we offer for windows and doors are particularly useful for customers who want to stay

ahead of these fast changing trends. Even more specifically there are trends with particular customers – within the housebuilding sector alone, one house builder will require more traditional products such as PVC-U vertical sliding sash and foiled woodgrain colour finishes that replicate timber, while another is looking for more contemporary coloured casement windows and Blackfinish composite doors. “Regardless of the product we are supplying, we always make sure we are abreast of up and coming changes to legislation so that we are always one step ahead on behalf of our customers. “

“Epic Support” “To enable us to deliver on our promises and provide the level of attention to detail our customers have come to expect, we need suppliers that afford us the same level of support. Synseal does just that. Not only do they supply us a wide range of profile and fully manufactured value-adding products so that we can meet all our customers’ requirements, they also offer epic marketing support. We have always taken advantage of their brochures, specification folders and promotional posters but most recently they have developed a new bespoke website on our behalf.

“Norvik has grown substantially in the last 12 months and has doubled its staff to stay ahead of the increased demand. With this investment in place alongside our expansive product range, expertise and understanding of the sector, we look forward to continuing to work closely with our customers to deliver quality properties to the new build market.” For more information, contact Norvik New Build Ltd on 01226 340182 enquiries@norvik.co.uk

Solar windows completes successful installation for Crest Nicholson

Voted ‘Installation of the Year’ by systems company REHAU and its customers, the recent contract completed by Solar Windows for Crest Nicholson in Colchester features more than 1000 tilt and turn windows and open out French doors. The installation is at the new Rosewood development, which has been built on the site of the former Severalls Hospital in the town. It includes nearly 250 contemporary properties built with echoes of traditional ‘Essex’ house design

and includes a mix of apartments and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes. In each of the properties, commercial specialist Solar Windows has fabricated and installed tilt and turn windows in the REHAU TOTAL70C PVC-U window system

Says Phil Hulse, regional director at NorDan, “We won this contract because we totally understood the requirements of this contract from specification of the right window and door products to the logistics of ordering and supply to the build schedule. This project required precision products with a long life cycle, low maintenance requirements, easily accessible spare parts, and the logistics to match. The whole project was completed within 54 weeks, hats off to a magnificent contractor.” McGoff and Byrne is a privately owned, UK based construction and integrated support services business, focused on key areas of the market including leisure, retail, commercial and healthcare. The full range of window and door products from NorDan feature –from the Bordorren composite entrance doorsets, a high secure, thermally efficient doorset, to the timber tilt and turn fully reversible windows, timber painted finished sliding patio doors and balcony doors. Brio, the world-leading designer and manufacturer of sliding and folding door hardware solutions, is helping Input Joinery of Andover in Hampshire create its prestigious hardwood bifolding door installations, including a highly specialist

curved bi-folding door project. He goes on to explain that sliding folding timber doors are a relatively new concept in the UK for domestic properties and are becoming very popular in both the new-build and replacement window/door

market. “They can open to almost 95% of the opening available, unlike traditional sliding patio doors which only open to about 45% of the available width. The maximum width of each leaf is around 1.0m and the maximum door height around 3.3m. Systems

can be manufactured from just two leaves to a maximum of 16, with one leaf being used for access.” At the moment, he says, Input Joinery is manufacturing around eight to ten high-end bi-folding hardwood door projects a month and now relies solely on Brio to supply the hardware. “We like the Weatherfold range from Brio and we also favour Brio’s mortise hinges which give a traditional joinery finish to the doors. Before we discovered Brio we had been using another well-known supplier but after meeting the Brio staff at a trade show on a visit with Westward Building Services, we decided we liked the product and liked the support they were offering. “The most recent project we have undertaken came via architect Chris Tizzard who had specified a set of curved bifolding hardwood doors on a large private house: he recommended us to the building contractor Kircher Building Services of Lightwater. This was a very specialised commission so we took time to

discuss the best way forward with Brio as we needed, for example, to calculate how the track would bend, and they worked with us closely to manufacture and supply the necessary hardware – which fitted absolutely spot-on and the doors work perfectly. It was a first for us and everyone is exceptionally pleased with the result. A family firm founded in 1979 with a staff of five, now well into its fourth decade, Input Joinery has built a reputation for quality products and customer service and now employs 60 staff with a turnover of around £4 million per annum. London to Athens with Freeflow! brand being very much like another. That can be a costly mistake.

Freefoam Building Products, a leading manufacturer of PVC building products for the Irish, UK and Mainland European markets has just released figures to show that if all the guttering sold in 2014 was laid end to end it would reach from London to Athens!

These figures highlight that an increasing number of construction professionals are realising the benefits of the Freeflow brand. For many fitters a rainwater system is out of sight so out of mind - until it goes wrong and many will assume that rainwater systems are a commodity with one

Brett Landscaping partners with Ashridge Contractors

Freefoam’s rainwater range, Freeflow, offers clever solutions to common issues giving fitters considerable benefits with the added choice both PVC and Cast Iron effect finishes. Co-extruded gutter with a white interior to minimise heat absorption and reduce expansion, highly visible red advanced long-life compressible seals which create flexible watertight joints, and gutters and downpipes covered with protective film to survive transit and storage. All features that make Freeflow the ultimate fit and forget product that can be relied on to perform year after year.

The Freeflow rainwater system is available in a range of four colours, black, white, brown and caramel and a variety of systems including round, square, deep and ogee. A Cast Iron effect system in both round and deep was added last year giving specifiers and property developers the choice of a low maintenance long lasting PVC system with the charm and appeal of authentic cast iron features.

Colin St John, UK General Manager, summarised “The Freeflow range is an integral part of our product offering, and seeing these figures is a clear indication of the number of construction professionals who are choosing to benefit from the features that Freeflow offers. A step up from Natural Brett Martin provide a runaway TRAFFEX 2015 – Resounding solution for stormwater Success for Instarmac Paving Products

Leading paving manufacturer Brett Landscaping has provided materials and design concepts to ensure kerb appeal at a new housing development in Sheffield. Hull-based Ashridge Contractors turned to Brett for assistance on Keepmoat Homes’ Cutler’s View development to provide a durable paving solution that can withstand traffic loadings and provide good looks to complement the project. The Alpha Antique Charcoal paver from Brett Landscaping was quickly identified as the optimum choice aesthetically, but the structural requirements of the carriageway surface – which had to resist the horizontal forces exerted by passing traffic – meant that Brett needed to engineer an appropriate solution.

Natural Paving Products (UK) Ltd, the UK’s leading independent supplier of high quality, ethically sourced natural stone landscaping products, has expanded its accessories collection with the addition of a premium range of step kits and pool copings. New for 2015, the range adds a new dimension to landscape design, allowing customers to create stylish transitions between different areas. Available in eight different colours that complement Natural Paving Products’ flagstone ranges, the step kits and pool coping can be seamlessly integrated into any garden design. All of the step kits and pool copings come with a practical and textured finish and are available in a variety of sizes and thicknesses to accommodate the most creative designs.

Brett Martin Plumbing and Drainage has provided the answer to surface water runoff with the launch of StormCrate, an underground modular geocellular unit which is proven at managing excessive stormwater and is an ideal solution for domestic soakaways. The UK has experienced some of the worst floods on record in previous years so the need to manage surface water runoff has been a crucial consideration for developers and housebuilders. The use of engineered Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) such as StormCrate is seen as one way of addressing the problem of flooding and avoiding using an overloaded sewer system.

Spacetherm® - outstanding performance for Grade II listed theatre Nottingham Playhouse is a Grade II* Listed theatre with a conventional proscenium layout, seating an audience of 770. It has English Heritage importance, and is an iconic landmark, with hundreds of productions, events and exhibitions taking place throughout the year attracting thousands of visitors. The challenge for Gleeds Building Surveying Ltd was to reduce the Playhouse’s energy bills by making the 1960s building significantly more energy efficient - without damaging or altering the building appearance and without disrupting theatre operations. The innovative façade design included the use of Spacetherm® blanket from the Proctor Group. 15mm Spacetherm Blanket was used between the Glazing and Board to improve thermal performance of the building.

Extensive refurbishment and redevelopment work at a library in the London Borough of Enfield has included the installation of four large, high performance rooflights from the Jet Cox range. The phased two-year programme of works centred on the Palmers Green library building is being led by Enfield’s Library and Museum Services department and is on course to be completed this autumn; with significant improvements being promised for users. These include a more comfortable and better lit interior environment to which the Jet Cox Moduglass rooflights will make a significant contribution. The library actually stands alongside the now redundant Southgate Town Hall - which is being converted for residential use – while an annexe has also been demolished.

Oakland Projects launches new age roofing technology Traditional flat roofs have long been the bane of the building industry. They are slow to install requiring three layers of roofing felt with each having to be sealed and finished with messy hot tar. The finished roof is extremely heavy, adding deadweight to the roofing timbers causing dips in the ply or chipboard which causes ponding after rain adding more weight and possible damage. So no wonder a felt roof can leak after just a few years. But now bespoke building and refurbishment company, Oakland Projects, has introduced a new concept in flat roofing. Working with manufacturers and trusted clients the company has developed the most modern approach to the problem, while adding a little light to the subject. Paul Sundborg, Operations Director of Oakland Projects, explained. “We have been installing super light yet

extremely strong fibreglass flat roof structures that are so reliable and leak free that we can also fit them with attractive skylights providing an extra ambience to an otherwise plain roof setting. “Fibreglass roofs can be quickly and cleanly installed by our experienced fitters in much less time than traditional but old fashioned felters. But even more important is the load bearing weight. Where a felted roof area would have a load weight of say 1.5 tons the equivalent weight of a 3mm fibreglass roof installed by our roofers is just 80kg, (176lb). These roofs have been tried and tested by us. We believe they are the modern way forward in flat roofing design and technology,” he added. Fibreglass roofs can be fitted with frameless skylights to create a fresh, light feel to any area. Lightweight powder coated aluminium roof lanterns use the latest silicone

bonding techniques, as well as rapid fitting, with sizes up to 4m by 2m being available. The glazing is self clean with a low U value (1) and a 20 year non leak warranty. Tried and proved by Oakland Projects the skylights offer minimum joints and bars with a maximum glazed area. With over 25 years’ practical experience, covering all market sectors, Oakland Projects has the benefit of a nationwide labour force. The company specialises in luxury construction, fit-outs, upgrades, extensions and refurbishment programmes with a realistic work schedule for all clients. Oakland Projects recently launched its new website which showcases the company’s luxury building company’s impressive range of services, including bespoke shop fitting contracts. 50 Roofing, Cladding & Insulation Synseal is proud to introduce Celsius solid roof – a new and innovative system that employs a structural framework of timber components with environmentally-friendly Envirotile external roof tiles and cappings to create a truly warm solid roof construction, with no possibility of cold bridging. At the heart of the system are thermally-efficient structural insulated panels (SIPs), enabling Celsius solid roof to achieve a pitched roof U-value of 0.18 W/m2K for compliance in England and Wales. The U-value of 0.15 W/m2K for compliance in Scotland is achieved by fitting insulated plasterboard to line and finish the solid roof interior. “Selecting the right supply partners to complement our Synseal Envirotile was key to the success of Celsius solid roof and with structural insulated panels (SIPs) from Kingspan TEK Building Systems, fixings from Rapierstar and optional roof windows from VELUX we have sourced the very best products to construct a well-engineered system of the highest quality,â€? comments Synseal’s Head of R&D, Phil Parry. Synseal Envirotile external roofing components are injection moulded to Synseal’s exact specifications from 100% recycled polypropylene. Precision manufactured and lightweight, each single Envirotile has a low profile chamfered front-leading edge with an aesthetically pleasing riven finish, is 12mm in thickness, weighs just 610

grams and is extremely simple to fix yet performs exceptionally, securely locking into adjacent tiles without any need for battening to form a quick-fitting and fully integrated roof covering. A single mechanical fixing point at the head in addition to the innovative interlocking design ensures that Synseal Envirotiles fit securely and easily, ready to

withstand wind and weather. Envirotiles are 80% lighter than standard concrete tiles, weighing 8.4kg per square metre in contrast with cement or natural slate roof tile products that typically weigh 50 kg per square metre. Available in a choice of 3 popular and appealing colours: Black, Brown or

Terracotta, the interlocking Envirotiles are self-draining, self-ventilating and branded with the Synseal logo for ease of identification. The single or double Envirotiles are easy to handle and cut on site for a precision finish at concealed hip or valley roof edge intersections. Fully approved and registered by the Local Authority Building Control (LABC), Celsius solid roof is available for existing glazed conservatory roof replacements or new build applications in Lean-To, Georgian, Gable and Victorian building extension styles. Synseal’s Roofing Technical Manager Neville Gleed has been the driving force behind the product development, overseeing all the key design stages including component prototyping and trial site installation of the full system to ensure that every detail of Celsius solid roof is perfect and ready for launch. “Our aim has been to create the bestlooking, most thermally-efficient and easiest-to-fit solid roof on the market today, says Neville, “while at the same time delivering full compliance with Building Regulations for new or retro-fit applications. Speed of installation is essential, because on site time = money.

Skyline Provides Unique Solution At Fire Station Skyline fascia soffits from Alumasc Rainwater have been used on the roof of a Manchester fire station, as a unique solution to their training needs. The station is fully operational and also provides training facilities to both new and existing firefighters, including cadets from 14-17 year olds. The brickwork on the parapet wall of the fire station roof had started to blow, so to prevent further damage and to improve the aesthetics of the building, the parapet wall was recladded. This area is also used in training sessions by firefighters abseiling down the side of the building, so the new cladding needed protection. Station management approached Alumasc for a solution, resulting in the specification of 30 metres of Alumasc’s Skyline coping and vertical fascia systems. The installation was carried out by Alumasc’s approved contractor, Roweaver Developments and overseen by Architect Warburton Associates of

Salford. Uniquely, the Skyline installation was tailored to provide additional reinforcement on the areas used for training, and to visually differentiate them, these areas were finished with Alumasc’s BBA Approved powder coating in a bespoke red, with the remainder in grey. Dave Slater, Managing Director at Roweaver Developments, said: “The installation of the Alumasc Skyline was fairly straightforward, due largely to the proactive project management and teamwork between us and the Alumasc technical team. Samples were provided and design

changes were made to make the installation more practical. The only challenge we encountered was having to use specialist scaffolding when installing the Skyline system above an area of the fire station which has a perspex lean-to roof. “As an Alumasc approved installer, we’re very familiar with the Skyline product and find it easy to install. It always provides a quality, reliable capping solution for our customers.” Alumasc Rainwater’s Skyline fascia soffit system features top of the range roof edge details to suit all designs and budgets. Manufactured from high quality, polyester powder coated

aluminium, the Skyline system is available in four bold generic shapes with bespoke designs available to order, and offers a life expectancy in excess of 40 years. Its fabricated fittings are mitred, welded and have a smooth finish and its linear components are jointed by internal brackets, avoiding stepped joints. More independence, more precision – the new HKC 55 cordless portable circular saw with new FSK trimming rail Festool is expanding its current 18volt “unplugged” cordless range with the launch of a new compound mitre saw system, the HKC 55. Designed to produce fast, precise and clean cuts, the HKC 55 comes with a powerful 5.2 Ah high-performance battery pack and brushless EC-TEC motor. The balanced weight distribution, simple operation of the hinged cover, intelligent angle and depth adjustment also help the user to work efficiently.

More independence With no power cables, the HKC 55 is therefore ideal for construction work such as roofing. The new FSK trimming rail is available in three different lengths and a rubber spring, which is integrated in the trimming rail, automatically brings the HKC 55 back to the starting position, making the saw always ready to use for the next cross-cutting operation. In order to provide more convenience

and safety when sawing, the HKC 55 is equipped with a hinged cover. A lever inside the machine causes the pendulum hood to slide back. This provides a clear view of the saw blade and enables easy sawing, even when performing mitre cuts. For maximum cutting performance and high cut quality, Festool offers three new, cross cut, rip cut and fine cut saw blades, especially adapted for the HKC 55. Thanks to FastFix, the saw blades can

be changed quickly and easily. The HKC 55 benefits from Festool’s SERVICE all-inclusive and is available to buy from June 2015. The starting price is RRP £326.40. For further information about the new HKC 55, please visit www.festool.co.uk/hkc
