Devon County Council completes paving with Resiblock Following the completion of paving reparation works and installation of new paving at Bedford Square in Tavistock, Devon County Council have purchased Resiblock ‘22’ A/F (Architects Finish) to seal, stabilise and protect the paved areas at this historic site. Home to the Tavistock Town Hall, which belonged to the Bedford Estates until 1911, Bedford square is a hive of activity on a daily basis, and therefore the failing of paving, and possible trip hazards, was something that Devon County Council were looking to prevent. Devon County Council placed their trust in Resiblock due to the historical successes of sites such as Silver Street (for Leicester City Council) and Station Boulevard (for Coventry City Council). Resiblock ‘22’ A/F was recommended due to its sand stabilisation and stain resistance qualities, as well as its striking appearance on the Marshalls Appleton Yorkstone Slabs that have been used on site. Watertight Homes waterproofs school extension with systems from Triton Watertight Homes Ltd specialises in the planning, design and installation of all types of structural waterproofing projects. The company holds Triton Approved Contractor status and has a long track record of providing a high quality service to commercial and domestic customers. The company was recently appointed to install primary and secondary waterproofing systems to a new extension built into the hill from an existing school building in Cheshire. Primary waterproofing protection to all the retaining wall block work was achieved by the installation of Triton’s TWS EX-100 self-adhesive membrane and this was protected by Platon Double Drain and a French drain to the kicker floor. TWS EX-100 is constructed from cross-laminated HDPE sheeting and a bitumen-polymer adhesive compound. The tough, durable membrane is water and vapour resistant and its primary use is for internal and external tanking to prevent the ingress of water and waterborne aggressive salts such as chlorides and sulphates penetrating concrete structures. A unique feature is its selvedge that enables a fast and secure seal on all side edge laps. Before installation of the membrane, TWS-EX

floor construction, the P8 was taken down to the foundation without the need for any additional drainage channels. The internal application of Platon P8 membrane enabled a Grade 3 dryness level to be achieved. After completion of all the waterproofing works, Triton Systems signed off a Certificate of Completion and Watertight Homes Ltd provided the client with a 10 year insurance backed guarantee. SPSenvirowall expands into cladding market Leading external wall insulation and render provider SPSenvirowall has announced an exclusive UK partnership with specialist cladding manufacturer Dynamic Cladding. The move marks SPSenvirowall’s first expansion into the external rain screen cladding market and brings A1 noncombustible and bomb blast-rated cladding systems to the UK for the first time. Dynamic Cladding’s glass rainscreen

system has achieved the highest fire rating possible and its stone cladding is the only one in Europe that achieved a bomb blast rating. Both will now be available in the UK for the first time through the exclusive partnership with SPSenvirowall. “This is not only an important move for us as a business, but for the industry as a whole, said Paul Winwood, Managing Director of SPSenvirowall. “We have now become a whole solution for

(L-R) Gavin Ross, Paul Winwood, Nathan Kirk, Daniel Thompson, Ben Mitchell

architects and developers who want to bring all aspects of a project together under one supplier, combining external wall insulation, render and cladding; a true mix use. “The partnership is also bringing some of the world’s highest safety rated cladding products to the UK market for the first time, opening up opportunities for higher level specification. Dynamic Cladding products are ETA approved, which meets and goes beyond BBA requirements. The products that are now available in the UK include DynaPanel Glass & Stone systems, both frameless and without face fixings, also DynaPanel Stone Veneer for interior wall linings and feature areas. Daniel Thompson, Development Manager at Dynamic Cladding, said: “We made the decision to develop glass and stone cladding in 2015. We could see the fashion of coloured glass cladding developing, particularly in airports and rail stations. They are scratch and graffiti resistant, easy to clean and the colours never fade. We set

out to create a glass cladding with the highest possible fire rating in order to give it as many application opportunities as possible. “Stone has always been a popular material but it has weight and cost limitations. Again, our priority became to create lightweight, versatile stone cladding that allowed faster installation and significantly reduced its weight. Our product is now up to 70% lighter than traditional stone systems and up to 50% thinner. “SPSenvirowall has been leading the way in the external wall insulation and rendering market for many years so it was an easy choice to partner with them to introduce our innovative products to the UK for the first time. SPSenvirowall sells in excess of 1 million square metres of external wall insulation per year and has branches in South Wales, West Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Essex and West Lothian, Scotland. ‘Your safety is our concern’, says Bahco boss Bahco’s reputation for quality tools, spanning more than 130 years, is synonymous with safety. The top priority for Bahco designers and production engineers is always to ensure that any hand tool or Working at Height equipment carrying the Bahco name is safe to use. “Your safety is our concern,” says Mark Haywood, who leads the Bahco team in the UK and Ireland. “Our aim has always been to develop ergonomic tools which not only make work safer and less demanding but also protect users’ hands from muscle strain or injury. A heavy duty Bahco lanyard from its Tools at Height range

Ergonomic screwdrivers are designed to be an ideal fit for the user's hand

A new Bahco Safety at Work product guide underscores that commitment with a focus on three key groups of tools: • Electricians’ screwdrivers, pliers and other tools used when working on live electrical equipment; • Non-sparking tools designed for working in potentially explosive workplaces; • Specialist safety equipment and tools which help prevent tools falling or being dropped when working at height. Electricians’ tools All Bahco insulated screwdrivers, pliers and other tools designed for working on electrical equipment are rigorously tested at 10,000V to ensure they are safe to use when working live at up to 1000V, fully meeting IEC 60900. Good examples are Bahco’s ergonomic, narrow blade 1000V insulated screwdriver and the upgraded Bahco 2101S insulated side cutting plier set. The screwdriver solves the problem of how to reach sunken screws and spring elements in confined spaces safely and easily. Blade diameter has been reduced by 30% using integrated insulation.

It also enables a higher transfer of force with less effort, while its ergonomic features protect even the toughest hands from the risk of muscle strain or injury.

The Bahco range of NS tools includes hammers, pliers, screwdrivers and wrenches, as well as other striking and construction tools. Working at height Bahco’s Tools@Height range includes lanyards, pouches and belts, hang bags and back packs ideal for working at height in any location and weather. Tools with integrated loops and other attachments enable secure tethering to lanyards and tool belts. Picture by Rope Access Sverige AB;

The super sharp cutting edges of Bahco’s latest insulated side cutting pliers enable a soft cut for copper wire or plastic, a medium hard cut for steel wire and a heavy duty cut for piano wire or similar. Non sparking tools Bahco Non-Sparking (NS) tools are designed for use in potentially explosive environments, where conventional steel tools might create sparks in the presence of combustible or easily ignitable vapours, liquids and dust. They are manufactured in aluminumbronze or copper-beryllium, making them both safe and suitable for use in hazardous environments.

Any tool dropped from height can result in death or serious injury to people working or passing below and can damage vital equipment, causing expensive downtime. Bahco is a member of the international DROPS scheme, in which major tool manufacturers exchange information and promote good practice to combat the risk of workplace deaths or injuries caused by falling tools. DART PCD Blades – Tough & Long Lasting!

Protect your most important tool with hand armour

DART’s Polycrystalline Diamond Blades offer the ultimate solution for effortless fast cutting in fibre cement boards & ultra-hard materials, such as Corian. Why PCD? PCD is a polycrystalline diamond, manufactured by sintering together carefully selected diamond particles at a very high temperature and pressure in the presence of a solvent/catalyst metal. The result is an extremely tough inter grown mass of randomly orientated diamond crystals bonded to a tungsten carbide substrate. PCD, therefore can be regarded as a composite material which combines the hardness, abrasion resistance and high thermal conductivity of diamond with the toughness of tungsten carbide. Polycrystalline is ultimately an extremely hard material – harder than tungsten and carbide, so will outperform a TCT blade by up to 50 times life wise. ENQUIRY-Card 114

THE SANDING PERFORMANCE YOU WOULD EXPECT FROM A MAINS-POWERED TOOL: Festool presents three new cordless sanders – RTSC400, DTSC400 and ETSC125

Cordless but with maximum material removal and surface quality: Festool is "pulling the plug" and launching three new cordless sanders – in addition to the RTS, DTS and ETS corded compact sanders. Say hello to the batterypowered surface specialists: RTSC 400, DTSC 400 and ETSC 125. No heavy cable reels, no tedious searching for sockets, no messy cabling: Simply unpack and start sanding – this is the motto for the new RTSC, ETSC and DTSC cordless sanders from Festool. These three newcomers signal a paradigm shift in the cordless sander segment. Whereas previous tools have

been somewhat unwieldy and heavy, the new cordless sanders impress thanks to their counterbalanced handling and outstanding ergonomics, while still maintaining remarkable endurance and high power reserves. "It was particularly important for us that, despite being battery-powered, the material removal rate would not come up short," states Patrick Hitzer, Product Manager for Sanders and Abrasives at Festool, adding: "Traditionally, our customers have high expectations of our sanders. When developing the new cordless sanders, we placed the customer and their requirements firmly at the

centre of our focus. Right from the development process, we worked very intensively with selected test customers and incorporated their feedback directly into our work. The result is that we can meet the needs of our professional users in full." Power meets endurance and perfect handling The list of things users require from cordless sanders is long: Lightweight and counterbalanced, powerful yet longlasting, outstanding handling while delivering the perfect sanding result all the while. The new BP 18 Li 3.1 ERGO battery pack plays a crucial role in meeting these requirements. It was specially developed by Festool for its new cordless sanders and has been elegantly integrated into the handle. Full power – low weight In combination with the brushless ECTEC motor, the three compact cordless sanders deliver a performance that you would expect from a mains-powered tool. This is also reflected in the technical data: Thanks to a speed of 6000 to 10,000 rpm and a sanding stroke of 2 millimetres, not only can the sanding power be variably adjusted to suit the surface being machined, but work can also progress extremely quickly. Added to this is the low weight: The cordless sanders themselves weigh just 1 kilogram and, with the plug-in long-life dust bag and battery attached, they still only weigh 1.5 kilograms. This makes them perfect for working above head height and in difficult-to-reach places. Thanks to

Irwin Tools says thanks to Tradespeople up & down the country

IRWIN® Tools, a leading manufacturer in hand tools and power tools accessories, is celebrating the UK and Ireland’s trade professionals with the return of its National Trade Appreciation Day. For the seventh year, IRWIN® Tools is bringing back its National Trade Appreciation Day to salute the country’s real working hands, and inspire the nation to show more gratitude for our skilled workers. On Friday 15th September, IRWIN® Tools is encouraging people all across

the UK to join in and celebrate the trade, even if it’s just with a simple ‘thanks’ to a trade professional. Darren Barber, Marketing Director UK and ROI at Stanley Black & Decker, said: “Trade professionals are the backbone of our nation, they don’t just put a roof over our heads, they build this country and keep it running strong. To all these men and women who work tirelessly throughout the year, this day is our chance to give thanks and recognise them for their efforts. “There are so many opportunities still

the long-life dust bag combined with the integral extraction system, the new cordless sanders can clearly demonstrate their first-class handling. Uninterrupted sanding – cordless Another big advantage of the cordless sanders is that their charging time is shorter than their running time. The BP 18 3.1 Li ERGO battery pack is back to full charge again in under half an hour – and the average battery life is significantly longer than 30 minutes. If the battery being used is drained, it can quickly be replaced with the fully charged replacement battery. The highlight: The Set and Plus versions come delivered with two batteries – so nothing stands in the way of a quick battery change and uninterrupted, cable-free sanding any longer. Cordless or corded? Thanks to the mains adapter, the sanders can be operated without a long-life dust bag but with a mobile dust extractor, including autostart function and suction hose, using power from mains. Simply plug in the plug-it mains adapter instead of the BP 18 3.1 Li ERGO battery pack and connect it to the mobile dust extractor.

DRY WOOD IS GOOD WOOD Hudson Lambert, Director of Safeguard Europe, looks at next generation of outdoor timber treatments – namely silicone-based wood protection cream – and its advantages over traditional materials.

Despite timber being one of our more versatile and attractive construction materials, it suffers when left unprotected from the elements: exposure to moisture is harmful to wood, even if previously treated with preservative. This is because moisture impacts adversely on the dimensional and structural stability of timber – something preservatives cannot stop – leading to detrimental weathering and, depending on the environment, sometimes quite rapidly. Water – especially in combination with UV radiation from the sun – can weather unprotected wooden structures in a very short period of time. Weathering describes the gradual deterioration of materials, which initially will be evident though discolouration: dark woods tend to brighten up in colour, while light woods tend to darken. Over time, particularly in areas along the coast, timber develops a silver-grey sheen, due to mildew growth and

cellulose enrichment of the surface. Additionally, weathering loosens the fibres of wood and causes a gradual erosion of its surface. The degree of the erosion progress depends very much on the density of wood – less dense earlywood degrades much faster than latewood, resulting in uneven surfaces. This fibrous deterioration is ultimately manifested in structural instability. Repealed expansion and contraction – caused by moisture-driven swelling and drying out – will eventually warp and even crack wood. Finally, damp wood is a perfect substrate for mould and algal growth – leading to further discolouration and unsightly staining. Obviously, prior to use, most woods are subject to preservative treatment. ‘Wood preservative’ is a broad church and covers comprises a variety of different chemicals for use on timber such as insecticides, pesticides, and mildewcides. However, preservatives are ultimately only truly effective in delaying fungal decay (rot) and deterring wood-damaging insects such as woodworm. Beyond the limitations of the preservative effect, there may also be environmental considerations in that – depending on the preservative type – they may leach from timbers and into the ground. Whether a non-durable species or not, all timber benefits from proper care and periodic maintenance to minimise the effect of moisture. Such maintenance could and should include the application – even at the time of installation – of a water repellent treatment. These maintain the aesthetic and increase the durability of wood by

enabling it, as the name obviously suggests, to repel water; and reduce the possibilities of splitting, swelling, discolouration, mildew and staining. There are many types of water repellents, such as oils, stearates and silicones. While oil-based water repellents protect against the effects of wind and rain; they generally require preservative treatment first, need multiple coats and are slow and messy to apply. Furthermore, they do not permanently bond with the substrate, have to be reapplied frequently and some natural oils actually promote, rather than inhibit, biogrowth. Alternatively, next generation siliconebased water repellent – Safeguard’s Roxil, for instance – has started to appear on the market, and appears already to deliver significant benefits over traditional offerings. Lasting on average longer – up to 10 years – than oil-based examples, silicone water repellent bonds directly with the substrate, penetrating deeply into it, and thus making it less prone to degradation from the effects of moisture. The protection conferred by the powerful formulation greatly reduces moisture ingress, minimising the expansion and contraction that degrades structural stability. This also

keeps the wood cleaner, and better looking by reducing discolouration. The lack of moisture in the wood renders it inhospitable to mould, mildew and algal growths; and, finally, silicone treatment, to an extent, encapsulated the wood and so helps prevent the leaching of preservatives. The latest silicone water repellent products – such as Roxil Wood Protection Cream, from Safeguard Europe – are cream emulsions which protects timber for 10+ years from weathering and premature degradation. The R&D that went into the cream should not be underestimated: wood is naturally isotropic, meaning it is very absorbent in one direction, but less so in the other. This can result in difficulties when applying water repellent treatments, as coatings might not penetrate deep enough, depending on the grain direction of the substrate. To avoid such problems, water repellent cream has been formulated with a special blend of particularly mobile silicones with maximum loading for a maximum penetration of wooden substrates. The deep penetration of Roxil prevents excessive wear and degradation, thus ensuring enhanced protection of wooden structures for years. The cream based formulation allows for an easy application, with no dripping or spilling, whilst being able to see which areas have been treated. This ensures wooden structures are treated in full, without any areas left to the effects of weathering. As in all things, not all water repellents are equal – and budget products usually mean a lesser, budget solution. Consequently, it is important to look towards established brands with a proven track record in in dampproofing and waterproofing technology. Problems such as poor finishes, mildew, checking and splitting, and wood decay can be minimised with proper timber care. If outdoor wood is given that care initially and is maintained periodically, it can be functional and structurally sound, as well as aesthetically pleasing, for decades. Treatment of timber with a silicone water repellent cream will not only maintain and sustain the natural appearance of wood by inhibiting the growth of mildew and mould; it will also decrease the swelling and shrinking that can lead to cracking and warping; and potentially structural failures too. Visit for further information on the Roxil Wood Protection Cream. ENQUIRY-Card 530

NEW BLOWERPROOF LIQUID SET TO TRANSFORM AIR-TIGHTNESS OF BUILDINGS Airtightness is a dominant factor affecting a building’s energy performance. It can be argued that airtightness is more important than insulation in terms of thermal performance. Even small gaps in doors and windows can cause significant heat loss and once a building is constructed, stemming unwanted air flow can prove difficult and expensive.

effectively an applicator can achieve a permanently secure and continuous seal. Blowerproof helps deliver energy performance well beyond building regulations. Blowerproof has recently been awarded BBA (British Board of Agrément) Certificate 17/5410. Jack Georgiou, project manager at BBA, says: “Blowerproof was subjected to a rigorous assessment by the BBA. The results of stringent tests were assessed including fatigue testing after accelerated ageing to verify the efficiency and durability of the air-tight seal.

When deciding how to seal construction gaps, one common option is to use a polyurethane-based, spray foam filler or silicone or acrylic sealant to ensure air-tightness, but there are acknowledged problems, with shrinkage and adhesion being the main disadvantages.

Simply brushed on, Blowerproof quickly forms a permanent, secure and continuous air-tight seal across a range of draught-prone points: wall/floor/ceiling connections, fenestrations, pipe connections including water, electricity, gas and data; all with no need for primers.

A new, BBA-certified, liquid air-tight membrane called Blowerproof is a clever, quick, easy and cost-effective way to ensure outstanding airtightness. Blowerproof has been used widely across Europe for many years as a proven and effective method of achieving high levels of airtightness, in many different buildings on a wide range of substrates.

Applied as a blue, thick liquid, fibre reinforced ‘paint’, Blowerproof Liquid Brush quickly cures to form a black sealed membrane which is highly resistant to punctures. Blowerproof is also available in white, so it doesn’t show through a plaster finish. Brushes rinse out under cold water, making Blowerproof Liquid Brush quick

to deploy and pack away. It’s safe to use in high risk environments such as food, childcare and medical environments as it is free from both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and harmful chemicals.

“Blowerproof performed satisfactorily in all aspects of the assessment and tests so we’ve certified it as being an effective way to improve the airtightness and consequently the thermal efficiency of buildings.”

A building that leaks air is always thermally inefficient. These air leaks cost the building owner, so it’s easy to make the case for using Blowerproof. It quickly justifies both its product and labour costs.

BBA certification is recognised by Government departments and throughout the construction industry as confirmation that a product is fit for purpose. Only products and systems that have passed a series of comprehensive assessments – including laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and inspection of production are awarded a BBA Certificate. Once a Certificate has been issued, six monthly surveillance of production and comprehensive three yearly reviews are required to maintain its validity.

An easy way to ensure leaks are sealed, helping limit applicator error is a major step forward to improving building performance. Blowerproof can’t be beaten for how quickly, easily and

In addition to the BBA, Blowerproof has Certification from a wide range of recognised European bodies, a full list can be found on the Blowerproof website. Blowerproof is also available as a roller application which can be used directly on blockwork, brick, masonry and as a spray which is ideal for larger areas such as walls and roofs. It can be directly applied to mineral wool, sprayed set foams or PIR insulation. For further information, or to purchase Blowerproof in the UK, please visit: ENQUIRY-Card 532

Mighton Partner Anker Stuy gives seating a great finish in Abbey Renovation Mighton Products partner Anker Stuy Verven (ASV) has been selected as supplier of the colour stains and lacquers for the new seating as part of a prestigious yearlong renovation of Westminster Abbey that was finally completed in June of this year. As part of the interior maintenance works that took place at the iconic London landmark 2,200 wooden chairs, with the Westminster Abbey Arms embossed in to each of the backrests, were commissioned and have now

become the new primary form of seating distributed throughout the building. The finish for these chairs carries a series of heavy demands and therefore required an exemplary quality lacquer

capable of providing long lasting protection against candle wax, as well as tough resistance against scratches and abrasions. The 2-component ASV lacquer that was eventually specified complies with the EN 71-3 standard, certifying it free from heavy metals and even suitable for use on children's toys, as well as complying with both DIN 4102 B1 and DIN 68861 B1 standards, which demonstrates its chemical resistance. However, it was not just the technical performance of this finish that was under high scrutiny but also its aesthetic appeal. Finding the right colour stain that could give the lacquer its desired hue proved to be a challenging process with eight individual shades of brown being developed from ASV’s HD LM Color stain before a selection was finally made. Emile Stuy, Export Manager at ASV, said: "The finished Abbey Chair has an aesthetically beautiful appearance through the blunt-molded finish,

making it perfect for the architecture and ambience of the Abbey. Being part of the process that made these chairs a reality, alongside Leon Volk, owner of our Netherlands based dealer Oxid Coatings, gave us the rare opportunity to work on such a prestigious and challenging project.” Mighton has been distributing Anker Stuy products to its specialist joinery customers throughout the UK since 2016 with next day delivery and a simple pricing structure which has seen a decidedly positive response. Since the completion of the Westminster Abbey project Mighton has also added the full range of specialist timber treatments, including interior finishes, to its established range of paints and coatings that are finding increasing favour with joinery manufacturers. Mighton plans to also include the addition of paints and coatings for other, non-timber, applications in the near future. ENQUIRY-Card 538

Bona Titan – a new generation of powerful adhesives

Bona, the wood floor experts, has launched Bona Titan, a new supreme performance, silane- based adhesive for high value projects, very wide or oversized solid wood boards - or any installation where the quality of the bond has to be guaranteed.

Bona Titan contains Titanium Technology - a revolutionary new formula comprising quadruple crosslinking that delivers superior durability and an unbeatable initial bond speed - even under challenging subfloor conditions. Bona Titan can be specified with confidence to bond all types of wood flooring. Its superb shear strength makes installation easy and keeps even the largest, solid boards securely in place. If the subfloor is sound and dry, no primer is required. The hard, silane-based formula contains no ingredients that can migrate after curing, which eliminates all risk of discolouration at the joints. The smooth, thick consistency makes it easy to use and produces stable ribs, an extremely high initial grab and zero risk of hollow spots. The bond strength of Bona Titan will not diminish over time so the stability of the floor is guaranteed for the long term. Bona Titan meets ISO 17178 standards and, in line with Bona’s environmental strategy, is a safe, clean formulation which also carries EC1-R Plus, DIBt, Greenguard and A+ low emission certifications. Bona Titan is compatible with underfloor heating and can be used directly on metal or tiles. Floors bonded with Bona Titan can be sanded after just 12 hours. Further technical information is available at or from Bona’s technical department on 01908 525 161. ENQUIRY-Card 567

housing issues

Creating accessible homes can alleviate pressure on health and social care, ease the 1.2million days lost through delayed discharge (bed-blocking). So says leading social housing provider Habinteg, in its latest Accessible Housing Policy Update. And with the portfolio from Closomat, key features in the bathroom are simple to achieve, maintain- and easy to evolve as the occupant’s needs change. “Accessible toileting is proven to make a huge difference in the demands on health and social care services,” says Robin Tuffley, Closomat marketing manager. “The bathroom is the most commonly adapted space. Our

And research shows people who are enabled to live independently, remain in their own homes, require less social care support, and have better health and wellbeing, reducing pressure on health services.” Habinteg’s figures claim some 1.8million people need accessible housing. SIZE MATTERS Get the right size hot water heating unit & system to fit the site - Rinnai

New from Rinnai, the UK's leader in continuous flow hot water heating, is a Site Sizing Service designed to give the right amount of hot water delivery to meet existing and planned needs. The new service initiative from Rinnai - available over email, iPhone and site visit - is to give contractors and users the right mix of products and system which fit the needs of the site, rather than a 'one size fits all approach' seen with traditional hot water heating systems. "Every site is different, as all installers know, and the tradition of oversizing a system 'just in case' is a very costly way for a site to have hot water on demand. The very basis of our product concept is that the end-user only pays for the fuel

to heat the hot water at the point of use. There are very few sites that might need a stored hot water facility - but this is very expensive - its rather like keeping a car's engine running just in case you want to drive it. It is as simple as that," says Rinnai head of Operations, Chris Goggin. He adds, "We are inviting contractors, designers, installers, end-users and consultants to contact us in person to discuss their new installations so that we can recommend the right system specific to the site. Our product can cope with virtually any size of commercial site - hotels, hospitals, schools, office blocks and larger residential properties and we have proven systems configured to cope with the biggest commercial premises - right through to Government departments

such as the Welsh Office or 350 plus bed hotels. The complete, bespoke and personalised system is designed for the specific need of the site or user and we have a proven record of adding significant value to our customers. The Rinnai product range includes the Infinity HDC1600i, a premium condensing hot water heater tested to below 20 ppm NOx, producing the lowest emissions on the market, with 97% gross efficiencies. Also in this established and proven range of award winning products is the condensing HDC1200 internal and external models which give an energy performance of 107% net efficiency while the larger Rinnai HDC1500 internal and external models have 105% net efficiency. Rinnai Infinity condensing units also exceed all the

demands of Part L Building Regulations. The Rinnai HD50i internal water heater and HD70e external water heater offer greater flexibility at the design stage and can offer an alternative solution where flue runs are problematic or internal space is not available. They are excellent units for refurbishment projects. Using a modular system of either internal or external Rinnai HD or HDC condensing water heaters and a stainless steel storage vessel, demands in excess of 20,000 litres per hour can be satisfied. Rinnai Infinity Plus Storage packs are delivered direct to site in one complete package. Rinnai units are 'renewables ready' when used as a gas booster to solar thermal or heat pump installations in maximizing renewable heat gains. It is the only booster that ensures a hot shower or bath any time of the day or night. The rest of the time the gas fired unit is inactive minimizing energy usage. Rinnai’s development and investment in integral smart controls for its appliances enable smart integration with sophisticated BMS systems allowing multi data monitoring which in turn identifies areas where energy, service and breakdown efficiencies can be improved. Each digital remote controller can be individually programmed, to deliver temperature accurate hot water for washing and cleaning however the water heater can only deliver one set temperature at any time. Remote temperature controllers cannot override the master temperature setting made with the DIP switches within the heater ensuring safety. Controllers can also deliver basic fault diagnosis. Rinnai also fields a common header flue system to streamline manifolded installations of its award-winning Infinity condensing units. Another simple but effective idea which safeguards against lime scale build up occurring in Rinnai continuous flow water heaters a scale control system continually monitors the appliances for lime scale deposits around the heat exchanger. Also in the range is the Infinity Solo. This is a Rinnai hot water heating unit which combines the advanced technology of its wall mounted water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one. And it boasts very low heat loss figures. For more information on the RINNAI product range visit ENQUIRY-Card 552

‘Think Dirty’, Urges New Sentinel Campaign It’s not every day that heating and plumbing engineers are encouraged to ‘think dirty’ on the job, but that’s exactly what best practice water treatment specialist Sentinel is doing with the launch of one of its biggest (in this case, size does matter) campaigns yet. Supported by boiler manufacturers, merchants and industry bodies, Sentinel’s tongue-incheek ‘Think Dirty’ campaign aims to raise awareness around the issue of dirty circulating water, and help installers to deliver best practice cleaning as quickly and easily as possible through the selection of suitable cleaning chemicals. Poor water quality is a common problem; research conducted by Sentinel and two leading boiler manufacturers in over 50,000 UK homes found that 35% of heating systems under five years old and more than 50% of systems over five years old suffer from dirty circulating water, while 87% of systems tested have insufficient inhibitor protection. Moreover, the consequences of dirty water are often dire, and can include pin-hole corrosion and component failure (which can occur within months of commissioning), radiator cold spots,

excessive energy consumption, low heat output and loss of boiler warranty – all of which can result in call-backs, complaints and loss of business for installers. Sentinel’s solution? Achieve an effective, best practice clean by thinking dirty; consider the age of the heating system, the type of dirt in it, and the extent of fouling, and then use the appropriate cleaning chemical for that system. Martyn Bridges, Director of Marketing and Technical Support at Worcester, Bosch Group, echoes Sentinel’s advice: "Correct cleaning, flushing and on-going inhibitor protection is becoming increasingly important for the lifetime protection of heating systems, and that's why Worcester Bosch, Group runs dedicated water treatment courses. Sentinel's 'Think Dirty' campaign is a fun way to continue the conversation on the importance of best practice water treatment, so like the campaign suggests, think about the type of dirt in the system, choose an appropriate cleaner for the job, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for a best practice clean." For example, systems less than six months old should be cleaned with

Sentinel X300 for New Systems – aptly partnered with the strapline ‘You never forget your first time’ under the Think Dirty campaign. X300 is specifically designed to remove harmful installation debris and contaminants such as metal swarf, copper dust, grits and sands, excessive flux, greases and oils. Need to squeeze in a quickie? Then Sentinel X800 Fast Acting Cleaner (for systems older than six months) is the best choice, as it can remove adhering and settled corrosion deposits and scale in as little as one hour. It’s also suitable for powerflushing operations, or for use on distressed systems where no heat is available. Once again, the Think Dirty campaign has come up trumps for X800, with the saucy but memorable strapline ‘You and me, non-stop for the next hour’. Sentinel X400 High Performance Cleaner is perfect for systems older than six months old that suffer from significant corrosion buildup and problems such as radiator cold spots, partial blocking due to magnetite sludge buildup, and circulation issues. It has a minimum cleaning time of two hours, but as the Think Dirty campaign suggests, this cleaner ‘can go for days or weeks, in fact’, making it ideal for pre-

Heating & Plumbing 45.

dosing. Sentinel’s Think Dirty campaign will run throughout the heating season, giving installers plenty of opportunity to get dirty minded and put best practice cleaning into practice. Keep an eye out for a new formulation X800 Cleaner that gets installers in and out in under an hour, a new filth-loving Sentinel filter, an adventurous advertising campaign, titillating competitions, and plenty of tips for talking dirty with homeowners. In the meantime, installers can pick up Sentinel X300, X400 and X800 cleaners from merchants such as City Plumbing Supplies, which is right on top of the campaign: “Sentinel’s Think Dirty campaign might raise a few eyebrows but, importantly, it’s going to raise awareness about the different types of cleaners available and how to achieve a best practice clean. City Plumbing Supplies supports the campaign as we see that it adds real value to installers, helping them to clean systems more effectively, easily and quickly,” said Nicola Clegg, Head of Marketing at City Plumbing Supplies. Rinnai Infinity 1600E offers lowest Low-Nox Guaranteed Rinnai, designer and manufacturer of the A-rated Infinity range of Infinity continuous flow condensing gas fired water heaters, supplies the best energy efficient range of low-NoX water heaters on the market. Advanced condensing heat exchangers combined with innovative down firing pre-mix burner technology ensure every cubic metre of natural gas or LPG is utilised to the maximum in the Infinity HDC 1600e. The units are renewables-ready and suitable for use as a temperature booster for solar thermal and heat-pump installations. The HDC1600e is also future-proofed against future regulatory and legislative changes. The renewables-ready low-Nox Infinity HDC 1600e external wall

mounted boiler along with the interior HDC 1600i version) utilises Rinnai’s patented pre-mix burner technology with a 14-1 turn down ratio – the largest on the market – of 58.4kw-4.05kw and is ultra quiet in operation. Integral controls on the units are also a major step forward in achieving best efficiencies whether locally or when integrated into a building management system. Legionella proliferation is also significantly reduced too. Rinnai has also invented additional

‘SMART’ controls for secondary return DHW systems in the form of an advanced temperature control system which allows for safe running of water at 42°C core temperature during the day and 60°C at a time when the building is closed. By the time the building reopens, core temperature is 42°C for safe use. “The uptake on the whole series of Rinnai’s low-NoX, high efficiency product, across all sectors, has been nothing short of phenomenal,” says Rinnai UK Associate Director Chris Goggin. Rinnai Infinity HDC range offers condensing technology with up to 107% gross efficiency, ultra-low-Nox of less than 20 ppm, a widely expansive modulation range of 54kW-4kW and high flow rates of 37/ltr/min. Add to these benefits the peace of mind of an extended warranty, a top A-rating exceeding the demands of ecolabelling legislation, the flexibility of external wall mounting and delivery to site with all relevant accessories and the knowledge that the HDC1600e is future-proofed against future regulatory and legislative changes and it is easy to see why the Rinnai brand is fast growing in popularity among H&V professionals. ISO-BLOCO one has rapid window construction covered IMPROVED sealing of windows is provided by ISO-BLOCO ONE foam tape available from leading supplier ISO-CHEMIE. The multi-purpose foam tape enables installers to quickly and easily seal windows from inside the building during construction, avoiding the need to use time consuming and costly external access systems like scaffolding and ladders. This can provide cost savings of up to 70% when compared to traditional three component systems - hiring ISO-BLOCO ONE from ISO-CHEMIE offers fast and cost effective onsite window sealing

access systems, with the associated health and safety issues, can add significantly to the overall cost of a new build or renovation project. Moreover, because the foam sealant can be used in the wet and rain the installation of windows can be undertaken regardless of external weather conditions, avoiding time consuming and costly delays. This can add-up to potential savings of hundreds of pounds per day, ISO CHEMIE estimates. Self-adhesive ISO BLOCO ONE provides

a high-performance seal for window and door joints up to 30mm wide and is impermeable to driving rain at a minimum of 1,000 Pa – 66% higher reliability than most conventional joint sealing tapes. The internal air tight seal has been tested at 1000 Pa pressure difference (20 times more than UK Building Regulations.) and found to give less than 0.1 m³ of air loss. At the same time, depending on tape width, it will also supply a U-Value of 0.55 and reduce sound by 63 dB, straight from the box. Once installed, the tape ensures structures are better protected from elemental factors like wind, dust and moisture ingress by accommodating the changes in structural movement caused by environmental, cyclical and settlement factors. Product complies with energy saving regulations (EnEV) on windows and doors as well as the RAL

quality assurance association and can accommodate extremes of temperature changes, from -30°C to + 80°C. BLOCO ONE offers a single product ‘fit and forget’ solution for fast and effective sealing based around the European RAL principles of three level sealing - the inside seal area is more airtight than the external one, allowing any trapped moisture inside the joint, or within the wall, to escape outwards rather than into the building. The external seal area provides weather resistance and breathability, while the intermediate seal area provides extra thermal and acoustic properties and the internal one air tightness and humidity regulation. ISO-CHEMIE is one of Europe’s main producers of impregnated foam sealants, specialising in the manufacturer of foam products from polyethylene (EPE), polypropylene (EPP) and polyurethane (PUR) using the latest production techniques. The company’s UK technical and distribution operation is based in the North East of England, supported by a dedicated logistics service to ensure customer orders are completed as quickly and efficiently as possible (usually next-day delivery). SWA member supplies screens and doors for hotel winter garden The phased refurbishment of both private rooms and the elegant public spaces of a Manchester hotel has been successfully completed with a member of the Steel Window Association, The Cotswold Casements Company, playing a pivotal role in the supply and installation of screens and doors. Located near the centre of the city, The Palace Hotel has now been renamed The Principal Manchester following a £20m refurbishment and re development with Michaelis Boyd Associates the architectural practice responsible for leading the design work. As the specialist steel window package contractor for the project, Moreton-inMarsh-based, Cotswold Casements, began by tackling the restaurant and winter garden where highly experienced operatives installed large screens as well as double and single doors to divide what was once the trading hall of a major insurance company.

As one of the country’s foremost door manufacturers, Premdor has one of the most extensive collections of internal and external door designs available to the UK market. It can therefore be seen that the extent of the colourways, designs and finishes provides the perfect opportunity to add value to a home or commercial establishment by mixing and matching contrasting door styles upstairs and downstairs, including external entrance doors. Whilst the use of internal wall colour, texture and design is the accepted norm, the concept of using doors to achieve a decorative effect can often be overlooked. Whether it be new build or a refurbishment project the coordination of a Contemporary Oak finish downstairs complementing a White Moulded option upstairs can lead to a dramatic decorative effect.

Crystal Clear Bristol, completes colourful Lumi installation

Interior design like all fashion evolves with the times and so the march of contemporary movement can often seem relentless. Of course a sense of tradition and warmth for the past often shapes our thinking with modern decor and so it is hardly surprising that Vicaima has seen a trend for panelled doors making a noticeable return over the past year. In response to this latest vogue, Vicaima have reinvigorated their Classic K range to provide a modern twist to an old favourite with some exciting new finishes. The Vicaima Classic K Range takes elements of shaker styling but with a more up-to-date and appealing look for the modern generation of interior panelled doors. Available in 1, 2, 3 and 4 panel designs, together with glazed options, Classic K doors offer a solid construction with real veneer faces, together with white or primed for onsite painting if required.

As part of a residential renovation project, Crystal Clear Bristol recently installed a Lumi composite door with sidelight all finished in Slate Blue, from Apeer. “The homeowners wanted to add a modern, stylish finish to the property on which we had undertaken a complete window refit, and the unique Lumi door in Slate Blue was the perfect finishing touch.” James Mizen, MD of the Bristol-based home improvement specialist explains. Crystal Clear Bristol has been installing high quality windows, doors and conservatories for almost 20 years, and has been offering Apeer products, including Apeer70, Modo and Diamond for almost a decade. After adding the Lumi range following its launch, James believes the products’ unique features make it popular with homeowners. The market for home improvements is fast being driven by the homeowners’ modern and contemporary, designfocussed aspirations. ENQUIRY-Card 142 ENQUIRY-Card 143 ENQUIRY-Card 560

New VEKA Imagine door lifts expectations Debuted at the FIT Show 2017, VEKA Group’s brand new Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is the latest addition to its luxurious, innovative and technically advanced Imagine suite of doors. Designed to ‘let nature into your living space’, the system can incorporate between two and four sashes; any and all of which can be configured to ‘lift and slide’ depending on the user’s requirements. And, thanks to its safe and secure construction – utilising extra large steel reinforcements within the profile – the Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is strong enough to easily handle both residential and commercial applications. Dawn Stockell, VEKA Group’s Marketing Director comments: “The Imagine Suite remains one of the industry’s most significant developments in terms of doors, with each new addition embracing its ethos of quality, capability and style. The Lift & Slide Patio Door is

no exception, offering luxurious expanses of glass while providing ‘best in class’ levels of insulation depending on the glazing used. We’ve pushed the boundaries of what’s possible, facilitating creative door designs that could only have been imagined before.” That’s not to say that the Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is intended only for wider openings. Its easy-to-operate sliding sashes are as effortless to use in small doorways as they are across large frontages opening onto lawns, patios or terraces for example. “We wanted the Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door to be elegantly stylish from any angle; inside or out”, Dawn continues. “Visible surfaces have been kept to a minimum even in floor-to-ceiling installations;

maximising the natural light let in, and creating a sumptuous sense of space. Sliding sashes close flush to the frame, and drainage has been fully concealed within the sash.” The Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door is available in a range of finishes (19 colours and woodgrains from VEKA’s Variations colour collection) across all installation options. Aluminium covers can be specified in those finishes too, further increasing the system’s versatility as part of a broader design scheme. The same flexibility applies to hardware, with products from all major manufacturers catered for. “The Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door met with a fantastic reception at its FIT Show launch”, Dawn adds. “What our

technicians have achieved with its multi-chamber profile, Neopor inserts and thermally broken threshold has addressed the industry’s expectations for energy efficiency using doors of this type. We look forward to hearing from our installers about the new projects it opens up, and customer reactions to its solidity and understated good looks.” To find out more about the Imagine Lift & Slide Patio Door, visit, call 01282 716 611 or email ENQUIRY-Card 562

Student Accomodation refurb is tall order for REHAU Windows When Manchester-based Excell Trade Frames was awarded the contract to replace the windows in a student accommodation block for the Sanctuary Group, the company set to work immediately on the fabrication of the 1,100 REHAU frames required for the job – as well as a plan to overcome the challenge of installing them in a 17-storey building, without access from inside. Wardley House is a student refurbishment project to be completed accommodation block in the centre of in time for the 2016 academic intake. Bradford, providing high-quality, The scope of the work included the modern living for up to 290 students replacement of 1,100 windows, new from the University of Bradford and lighting, the replacement of the water Bradford College. Located above the and heating system and a facelift for National Media Museum, the complex reception/common room areas. was in need of an upgrade so owners The building’s existing windows were Sanctuary Group invested £1.5m in a single-glazed, metal frame windows,

which were inefficient and in a poor state of repair. The contractor on the job, City Gate Construction, worked with REHAU on a dedicated specification to meet Sanctuary Group’s vision for the refurbishment and the use of REHAU’s TOTAL70 profiles was agreed. REHAU’s TOTAL70 casement windows are designed to meet the requirements of commercial and domestic refurbishment projects, as well as new builds. Available as either chamfered or sculptured profiles, the windows have single leg beads to provide easy but secure on-site glazing. As TOTAL70 profiles are PVC-U, they guarantee maximum energy efficiency yet are low maintenance for building operators. So for Sanctuary Group, the windows will be very much fit and forget. To give a modern, contemporary look, the spec for the TOTAL70 profiles included a grey laminate foil so that the windows and glazing would look completely grey – even with the sun shining on it. Excell Trade Frames, a REHAU approved manufacturer and supplier, won the contract to replace the windows at Wardley House. With a factory in nearby Manchester, Excell measured and manufactured all the windows for the job and transported them to site in Bradford. The installation of the windows had to be carefully planned, as this had to be done from the outside of the building. Eddie McGrath, commercial Sales Manager at Excell said: “In a previous refurbishment, false walls had been put up in front of the windows, giving students access to them via a meter

square hatch. Unfortunately, this meant that we couldn’t get complete access to the windows from the inside of the building – the only way was from the outside!” Scaffolding was put up around the building to help with the complex installation. Eddie devised a plan with four teams of fitters, who took out the old metal windows and lowered them to the ground, before hoisting up the 3m2 PVC-U replacements and installing them in position. The planning paid off, and Eddie’s team managed to complete a floor every week to finish the installation in just four months. Matt Janicki, Area Sales Manager for the North West for REHAU Windows Solutions, said: “This was a large scale, complex project, but thanks to a well considered specification and careful planning of the installation, the new windows have unquestionably transformed the exterior of the building. Wardley House is a landmark for students and locals in Bradford and the TOTAL70 windows provide a fresh new look for the building to make it look modern and appealing while reducing energy and maintenance costs for Sanctuary Group.” ENQUIRY-Card 568

The sky is the limit for

Polypipe Terrain has helped provide City of London office occupiers with a state of the art roof garden, improving the outlook for hundreds of employees.

The existing Seacoal House building owned by UK Power Networks had a sedum roof, however the surrounding taller structures meant that the original roof did not receive natural sunlight, and therefore all vegetation had died, leaving the roof looking unsightly. Polypipe Terrain worked with acclaimed landscape architects Gustafson Porter + Bowman to design, manufacture and

office workers are enjoying today. At only 85mm in depth, Permavoid was the ideal solution for a rooftop application. In addition, the Permavoid cells boast a 95% void ratio and incorporate a unique jointing mechanism that forms an interlocking ‘tensile raft’. The void ratio of the Permavoid cells allowed the architect to reduce the number of rainwater outlets used in the roof. All drainage requirements had to be accurately modelled prior to on-site installation, due to a section of the roof sitting above an electrical substation. The team at Polypipe was able to construct and configure the Permavoid cells to meet the required specification. With the modular system manufactured from plastic, it was light in weight and therefore easy to handle and install. Donncha O Shea, Partner at Gustafson Porter + Bowman, said, “By installing this new system retrospectively, we

Roofing & Cladding 53 have been able to successfully develop a stormwater management system for an existing building. It shows how tall buildings within our city centres can adopt this technology.” Nicholas Wright, National Project Manager for Water Management Solutions at Polypipe Terrain, said, “We have designed, manufactured and installed many Permavoid systems in inner city areas, whether they be at ground, podium or roof level. When Gustafson Porter + Bowman approached us, we knew we could come up with a system that would work for them.” ENQUIRY-Card 570

install a hard landscaped roof for the building. It was crucial that the plans included a stormwater management solution and attenuation system, for which Polypipe’s Permavoid was specified. The result was a permeable surface with aluminium detailing, with Permavoid tanked in a membrane to manage and control stormwater run-off, which delivered the surroundings that

ROCKWOOL unveils rainscreen acoustic reference guide ROCKWOOL UK has launched a new technical bulletin that is, set to transform how rainscreen cladding is specified for its acoustic performance. Unique to the sector, the Rainscreen Acoustic Reference Guide looks at the rising impact of noise in urban environments and explains how rainscreen cladding with sound insulation can minimise this problem. The guide gives reliable acoustic test data on a range of ROCKWOOL products, enabling the right rainscreen cladding solution to be selected with complete confidence that it will perform in its selected application. Greater urbanisation is seeing our living spaces becoming crowded. The increasing need for space has meant that buildings are being built too close to major sources of noise, including road traffic, railway networks, air traffic and even other construction sites. RECYFIX® MONOTEC drains outdoor surfaces at Ysgol Gynradd Lôn Las School, Swansea The Ysgol Gynradd Lôn Las Primary School, Swansea, has currently 535 pupils from Year 1 to 6 as well as Reception and Nursery Classes. The school site is split into 4 main areas. Having a large gymnasium and a separate school canteen there are plenty of outdoor playing areas including a hard surface yard, an enclosed area for Nursery and expansive areas of grassland. Hauraton Limited introduced the RECYFIX® MONOTEC, surface drainage system in January 2016.The Lôn Las

school, joins numerous installations successfully completed in the United Kingdom. The RECYFIX® MONOTEC system was installed to provide surface drainage in the paved entrance/play areas and the car park’s asphalt surface. Having a grating width of 100mm (Channel internal dimension) with an overall height of 280mm and a cross-section of 245.5cm2, the 176 metres of channel supplied provide a total water capacity of just over 4329 litres. The MONOTEC one metre long channel

component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained. Cat Jones, Hauraton‘s Project Manager for the South West comments; “The RECYFIX MONOTEC channel HEELSAFE slot grating was originally designed to

enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. The smooth grating and tough nature of the channel, up to load category of Class D400, made the system ideal for the non-trafficked areas such as the entrance area and school play yard as well as staff care parks and access roads. I was particularly please the site contractor Dawnus Construction found these channels easy to handle on site. As each channel component only weighed 8.63kg, this feature eliminated the need for mechanical lifting gear”. Shaun Davies the Site Agent for the Contractor also observed,” I was very impressed with the durability of the MONOTEC channels. Not a single unit was damaged by site traffic or whilst laying the asphalt. Any queries or information required was easily and quickly obtained from Hauraton’s technical support team”. All Hauraton surface water drainage systems’ comply with European Standards (hENs) and carries the CE mark”. ENQUIRY-Card 575

Half a Century of Steel Manhole Cover Production in the UK Despite decades of seeing other firms send their steel manhole cover production overseas, Clark-Drain has remained committed to in-house manufacturing in the UK. The company’s origins are very much in innovation and when it formed in 1965 as Clarksteel Ltd the first product was also the UK’s first steel manhole cover. The company has since built a reputation for product quality and customer service, maintaining several

customer relationships dating back to those early years. A rebrand to Clark-Drain in 1998 reflected an increasingly broad product range using various materials. Steel manufacturing has remained strong in the business, which operates impressive

production facilities such as fabrication, galvanising and powder coating at its base in Cambridgeshire. This in-house capability enables quality control throughout the process. However, that’s just part of the picture: control of fabrication and finishing on site also brings flexibility in terms of scheduling. It’s not uncommon for the company to quickly reorganise production schedules or add extra shifts to meet demand or accommodate specific orders. Customers benefit from the firm’s onsite galvanising and powder coating facilities in other ways, too. Avoiding the need to transport products around the country or further afield for finishing reduces costs. Many customers also welcome the environmental benefits of sourcing products with fewer road miles involved. Clark-Drain also maintain an in-house design team. The result is ongoing product innovation, with the company continuing its track record for bringing new ideas to the market. In recent years their designers have addressed

everything from increasing manhole cover product life, to improving sealing for better odour control. The design team also works with customers on bespoke designs. As well as steel products, the company’s range covers a variety of materials, from polymer concrete linear drainage channels to polypropylene chambers, ductile iron manhole covers and underground fixtures and fittings.

New Kingspan Shallow - Dig Rainwater Harvesting System - Gamma Kingspan has launched a new premium ‘shallow dig’ domestic rainwater system, which joins the company’s well-established portfolio of rainwater-recycling solutions. The Gamma Rainwater range is a lowcost installation for self-build projects and residential developments. Its profile requires a shallower dig and less excavation than traditional rainwater harvesting systems as well as less backfill to secure it in place. It’s also ideally suited

to rocky strata conditions where deep digs are not possible. Gamma is designed as a ‘fit-and-forget’ system, providing homeowners with a seamless, automatic supply of harvested rainwater. It works by channelling rain from roof gutters, filtering out leaves and

debris and then storing the water in an underground tank. This water is then conveyed to appliances (WCs, washing machines, outdoor taps etc) either direct, via a header tank, or is pumped direct from the main storage tank where a tank is impractical. Systems which supply WCs

whereas a traditional timber deck would need to be stained and prepped ahead of winter, Trex is an ultra-lowmaintenance option that requires no sanding or sealing. Just an occasional sweep, and a clean with soap and water is all that is needed to preserve the beauty of a Trex deck for decades. Ensuring the lasting beauty and durability of its products, Trex backs all of its deck boards – including those that have been curved with CustomCurve – with a 25-year Fade and Stain Warranty. or washing machines are automatically backed up with mains water at no inconvenience to the householder. Dave Vincent, Commercial Director for Kingspan Water Management (GB and Ireland) advises: “Rainwater harvesting has been gradually growing in popularity in the UK during the past 10 years or so. However, it has long been popular abroad. For example, rainwater harvesting has been around for more than 20 years in Germany, which does not have as much rainfall as the UK and is more reliant on groundwater.” “Limiting water usage is now a legal requirement in the UK for new build domestic properties; Building Regulations require that water consumption is limited to 125 litres per person, per day. “A rainwater harvesting system can halve the amount of water used by a homeowner and, unlike other water saving appliances (such as aerated taps) which can be upgraded or removed, rainwater harvesting systems will remain a constant feature of any development, ensuring targets for water management continue to be met for years to come.” Manufactured from tough polyethylene, Gamma’s underground tank is robust and lightweight, making it easy to handle and install. Tank sizes range from 2,350 to 4,600 litres. Gamma is fully compliant with all regulations and standards, having been tested in accordance with EN 12566 Part 1 and BS 8515:2009. ENQUIRY-Card 580
