Job flexibility ensures tradesmen are the nation’s happiest workers Over 90 per cent of tradespeople are happy in their jobs, with the majority putting it down to the flexibility of mobile working, new research has found.
PRODUCT NEWS EVERBUILD: Everbuild–A Sika Company, the UK’s largest manufacturer of sealants, adhesives, fillers and building chemicals will be at this year’s National Merchant Buying Society annual exhibition.
DOORS & WINDOWS SANIFLO: The prestigious range of Kinedo shower cubicles by Saniflo is enjoying increasing success with premium housebuilders.
The study, which was conducted by IronmongeryDirect, found that 91% of mobile working tradesmen are happy in their jobs, with 50% of these claiming they are very happy. Tradesmen stated that flexible working (61%) and increased productivity (28%) were the biggest benefits of mobile working. In fact, a massive 98% of tradesmen said they were happy with the amount of flexibility their job provides. And when asked what do they enjoy most about mobile working the majority (62%) said they liked having flexibility over the hours they work. 42% also took satisfaction in the fact they are trusted to do their job independently. Tradesmen also seem to prefer mobile working over being confined to an office as 23% said mobile working helps them to work better as there are less distractions than in an office environment and a fifth said it ensures they don’t get caught up in office politics. In fact, 16% said mobile working helps them to work with their team more easily. The study found that almost four fifths of trade professionals (79%) believe that mobile working adds to productivity and improves their job performance. In addition, 90% of tradesmen said they were happier as a mobile worker than a non-mobile worker, while only 55% of non-mobile workers said they were happier than being mobile. However, when non-mobile workers were asked, only 62% said they were happy in their jobs, with just 24% very happy.
The study of 500 mobile working tradespeople and 500 nonmobile workers in the UK, conducted by IronmongeryDirect, was undertaken to find out how happy they are as a mobile worker and the reasons why they enjoy mobile working. Also, we wanted to discover how technology is impacting on their work, and whether it is driving productivity. Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said: “It’s fantastic to see that 2016 has started out as a good year for tradespeople and that revenues are expected to increase even further. “With so many tradespeople expecting 2016 to be a positive year for business, we are focused on supporting them where we can. It’s really important that tradespeople are able to order and receive the products they need to complete a job quickly and easily. As a result, we have just introduced a seven-day a week delivery service so tradespeople can now receive goods on a Sunday, helping them to maximise their working week and be prepared for any job.” For more information visit http://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/industry-review www.mclink.co.uk/959-147 ENQUIRY-Card 147

Free Compliance Health Check offers cost savings and safer fleets Fuel Card Services has teamed up with Applied Driving Techniques (ADT) to offer fleet operators a free Compliance Health Check. This offers major cost savings, fewer road collisions and protected corporate reputation. It reveals how well a fleet complies with health and safety, duty of care and other relevant legal requirements, suggesting corrective action. Jim Golby, ADT director of research and customer experience at ADT, said, “Many employers are unwittingly exposed and at risk due to their failure to ensure staff driving on behalf of the business are operating compliantly. This is despite clear HSE guidance, since 2003, designating driving on business an ‘at work’ activity. Almost a third of deaths on UK roads occur during business-related journeys.” www.mclink.co.uk/959-144 ENQUIRY-Card 144

Cavicloser Revealing Benefits
The heat-loss path around any cavity wall opening is effectively the shortest route from the inside to the outside. Part of the heat-loss journey is through the exterior skin, so the more conductive the exterior masonry, the worse the overall heat-loss figure. A thermal conductivity figure quoted for a typical clay brick (specific mass 1600-1900 kg/m³) is 0.6 - 0.7 W/mK when the brick is dry. The same brick when wet can have a thermal conductivity of 0.9 – 1.2 W/mK an increase in conductivity of up to 100%. A reveal detail that is marginally compliant might struggle to retain compliancy when the exterior skin is wet as the addition of rain diminishes the thermal performance. There is little one can do to stop the exterior skin becoming saturated, but one can at least reduce the heat-loss journey from inside to outside by positioning the window frame back into the opening so the journey through the exterior skin is shortened.
Whilst this practical step is well established, another is gaining popularity. When partial fill insulation is in the cavity, the relationship between insulation and reveal closer is of paramount importance. A survey revealed in excess of sixty percent of all sites visited had gaps between these two elements. Interestingly gaps featured regardless of whether a first-fix or a second-fix reveal closer was being used. Gaps can have a more profound effect on heat-loss around opening than a saturated external skin, but combined they can decimate thermal performance. One solution is to use a Continuity Closer. The insulating core of a Continuity Closer is L-shaped and this makes the difference. The main body of the Continuity Closer fills the reveal cavity and the projecting L section does what other closers do not – it extends and wraps across the adjacent partial fill insulation. Gaps contravene Approved Document L1A 5.9 that states the building fabric should be constructed so that there are no reasonably avoidable thermal bridges in the insulation layers caused by gaps and refers to those at the edges of elements such as around windows and doors. The Continuity Closer supports a route to compliance and is manufactured by Cavity Trays of Yeovil. email@example.com www.mclink.co.uk/959-500 ENQUIRY-Card 500

Denso Steelcoat Protection for Severn Trent Pipebridge
Rehau launches new virtual brochure library
Design–and–construct specialist Mott Macdonald Bentley has recently refurbished the 21 metre pipebridge carrying treated water over the river Weaver near Nantwich, Cheshire, for Severn Trent Water plc. Winn & Coales standard Denso Steelcoat 100/400 protection system was again chosen by Severn Trent Water for this pipe bridge. After removal of the residue of the previous coating, hand surface preparation was carried out to St2 standard. The Denso Steelcoat system consisted of application of Hi-Tack Primer followed by Denso Profiling Mastic on required surface areas. This was followed by Hi-Tack Tape, Ultraseal Tape and a Denso Acrylic top coat. A typical pipebridge protected with Denso Steelcoat system.
REHAU has produced a new version of its user friendly ‘Docs’ app which allows architects and specifiers to access product and technical information on their mobiles and tablets. The app, which is available to download from the App store simply by searching for ‘REHAU docs’, allows users to create their own virtual library of REHAU brochures and specification guides which they can access instantly at any time. Architects and specifiers can personalise their library simply by tapping the relevant tab within the app to select their area of interest and then choosing from REHAU’s many product areas, which includes windows, doors and glazing systems, district heating, ground source energy solutions, and sub surface heating and cooling.

New builder’s database helps suppliers generate millions in new business Small builders are the backbone of the building industry, working on tens of thousands of light commercial, new-build and residential projects and spending millions every year on building and home improvement products. Yet most local builders don’t actively advertise themselves, preferring to operate on word-ofmouth recommendations, with some having no more than a mobile phone number and email address. Operating under the radar, these builders are notoriously difficult for suppliers to track down.
Not anymore. Insight Data has painstakingly developed the Local Builders database, creating the most comprehensive and detailed marketing data of its kind. Promoting your products and services to small builders and contractors is now easier than ever. The database contains over 23,000 building contractors and firms across the UK (with 17,800 verified email addresses) who provide a range of services in the building
and construction industry, ranging from extensions and home improvements to light commercial and new-build projects. Jade Greenhow, Operations Manager, comments: “The Local Builders Database is a powerful marketing tool, which can help you to drastically increase sales. With the ability to instantly create mailing, email or telesales lists, or a follow-up list for your sales team through our online system Salestracker, it
really can make a huge difference to help increase sales and marketing output exponentially.” The database contains details of companies with a turnover of up to £5m, making it ideal for building product suppliers, builders merchants, timber or plumbing merchants, window or door suppliers, or service suppliers relevant to the building and construction industry. Simply log on to Salestracker, Insight Data’s online database software, and select the builders you want to target by location and sectors, with data verified and updated in real-time. Salestracker is the world’s first fully integrated sales and marketing platform created specifically for the building and fenestration industry. It combines real-time prospect data with a powerful online portal with full CRM, map integration and credit profiling. Students Reap Benefit of Wetherby IWI Students in Headingly, Leeds are reaping the benefits of having Wetherby’s internal wall insulation system installed, to help improve the energy efficiency of their living quarters. Being on the doorstep of Leeds University, Headingly is densely populated with traditional Victorian houses that have been converted into student bedsits. On this particular scheme, three hundred plus bedsits were supported by the GDHIF funding and since many of the homes displayed intricate architectural features, where planning permission would never be granted for EWI, Wetherby’s EpsiLine Internal Wall Insulation System was the perfect solution. Both the tenants and landlords on this scheme have been delighted with the results. One particular young lady commented ‘Visually, you can’t even tell the difference, but my room feels a heck of a lot warmer now’.
Hit the decks with Samac’s new screw
New investment initiates Unilog Pro Sales Boost
The latest addition to Samac’s Performance Range is the Performance Decking screw that is packed with features to make fixing decking fast, simple and secure. The Performance Decking screws have all the top quality features that make fixing soft and hardwoods simple, plus attributes that are especially pertinent to decking. A special serrated thread cuts through wood and reduces torque, while the Type17 cut point reduces splitting and minimises the need for pre-drilling. To make decking last for years without losing its appearance, there is a locking thread at the top of the Performance Decking screw which secures the screw to the decking board to prevent movement. A special ACQ corrosionresistant coating is unaffected by the treatments found on some decking boards and will withstand a minimum of 1000 hours on a salt spray test. The screws are a natural brown colour to give a appealing, professional finish to any decking project.

One of the worst areas of heat loss through a thermal bridge is where the floor meets the wall. Up to 30% of heat, in a well-insulated room, can be lost this way. Thermoblock prevents that heat loss.
