Number of new homes

hits 10-year high New home registrations in the UK have reached a 10-year high. The National House Building Council

(NHBC) registered 42,470 new homes in the first quarter of this year – an increase of 17% on the 36,351 registered 12 months ago,

resulting in the highest quarter in 10 years. In total, 31,197 homes were registered in the private sector, an increase of 10% on the

same period a year ago, with 11,273 new homes registered in the affordable sector, representing a 40% increase on 2016 numbers. New home statistics for the financial year also reveal a 4% increase for 2016/17 with a total of 157,898 new homes registered compared to 151,599 in 2015/16. In addition, new home completions for the financial year increased by 5% to 145,282, up from 137,826 in 2015/16. For the first time in seven years all 12 regions across the UK experienced growth in registrations, when compared to the same period 12 months ago. The North East (+39%), London (+38%) and Eastern (+31%) were among the regions with the most notable growth. NHBC managing director Neil Jefferson said: “These figures, with growth across the entire country, are clearly encouraging for the sector, at a time when there is considerable demand for new, high-quality homes. This growth in registrations, in both the private and affordable sector, is welcome news and will result in more newly built homes across the UK over the coming months.”

Architects feel more confident

The monthly Future Trends workload index gained strength in March, rising to +22 from February’s figure of +16. Architecture practices in Northern Ireland were the most optimistic about future workloads (balance figure +57), followed by Midlands and East Anglia (+37) and the North of England (+30). Practices in London (+13) and the South of England (+6) trailed, though remaining somewhat positive. Medium-sized practices (11–50 staff) were more optimistic about future workloads, with a balance figure of +36, than either small or large practices - both standing at +20. RIBA executive director members, Adrian Dobson, said: “Despite some of the economic and political uncertainties in the months ahead, responding practices are expecting their pipeline of work to remain healthy in the medium-term. However, anecdotal commentary suggests there are signs of practices being less confident about the longer-term outlook.” For the first time in over a year, all four sector forecasts predicted growth. The private housing sector is still expected to be the strongest performer over the next quarter despite a slight decline in the workload forecast (falling to +20 in March from +23 in February). The public sector (+2) and community sector forecasts (+1) edged back into positive territory while the commercial sector increased to +9. The RIBA Future Trends staffing index increased to +12 in March (up from +9 in February), with only 6% of practices expecting to employ fewer staff in three months’ time. Medium-sized practices were again the most positive about future staffing levels (balance figure +20), compared with large (balance figure +10) and small practices (balance figure +12).

Some of the construction industry’s leading trade associations have produced their own general election manifestos, detailing what commitments they would like to see from the major political parties. With a general election taking place on 8th June 2017, the main topic of conversation nationally is Brexit – what it means and how to achieve it. But all the usual political hot topics of health, education and social services remain as important as ever. For construction industry lobbyists, however, it is house-building, training and procurement reform that are at the top of their agenda. Below are three election manifestos set out by different construction industry associations. Specialist Engineering Contractors’ (SEC) Group A future government and parliament should commit to three-points for a worldleading UK specialist engineering supply chain in the built environment: 1. Bring legislation to protect all retention monies in a ring-fenced account, as first step towards zero retentions by 2025, and prioritise review of the ‘Construction Act’. From 2021 all publiclyfunded built environment work over £1 million should be paid using Project Bank Accounts. Payment security will guarantee a sustainable supply chain of SMEs. 2. By 2022 all publicity-funded infrastructure and building works should adopt smarter procurement methods as a pre-condition to the availability of funding. Best models of practice in public procurement contracts will drive positive change across the industry. 3. Establish a joint government/industry task group with a remit to develop proposals for a statutory licensing scheme for contracting companies. Building on current initiatives, incentivise the industry to aim for greater efficiency and best quality standards that will create a level-playing field for competition.

1. Connect the output of construction and operation of the UK’s built environment, and making it a strategic priority, to enable the sustainable delivery of economic, social and environmental benefits. Engineering services is uniquely positioned as a cornerstone of both sectors and has a central role in delivering these benefits throughout the lifetime of built assets, and, as a key enabler, should be selected by government for a ‘sector deal’. 2. Ensure that SME apprenticeship training is fully funded for the entire parliament. At present, there is significant concern that firms that are not required to pay the new apprenticeship levy may not be able to access the support they need to develop engineering and other technical skills. 3. Ensure that government is a smart client and smaller businesses have stability of cash-flow and payment. A key request is for a digital payment platform in the public sector, linked to digital procurement processes. This would give greater transparency and speed to supply chain payment, and lower supplier risk. 4. Make energy, heat and carbon efficiency a real sustainable delivery priority within the next parliament. Achievable energy efficiency goals, backed by government, need to be fulfilled if we are to meet our emissions reductions targets in the lowest cost way, as well as offering a way for businesses to improve their productivity. 5. Improve productivity through action to enhance employee engagement. Government should introduce additional requirements in the procurement process to help mitigate against false selfemployment and other tax avoidance schemes, and facilitate improved employerworker collaboration, resulting in enhanced productivity.

Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) / Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) The ECA and BESA have produced a fivepoint industry manifesto:

Federation of Master Builders The FMB also has a five-point plan: 1. Ensure that the construction industry has enough skilled workers Introduce a flexible system of immigration

Roof, Wall, Soffit & Fascia Ventilation?

that allows key strategic industries like construction to draw upon adequate levels of skilled labour from the EU and beyond. Commit to increasing the quality, duration and thoroughness of apprenticeships and thus improve the image of vocational training so that we can attract more young people into our industry. 2. Increase the supply of new homes The UK government should commit to building at least 200,000 new homes per year in England and encourage the delivery of 25,000 new homes in Scotland; 14,000 in Wales; and 11,000 in Northern Ireland. In England, continue to work with the house building industry to successfully implement key recommendations within the 2017 Housing White Paper that are designed to increase house building through SME builders. 3. Improve the quality of new and existing homes Introduce a mandatory warranty requirement for all domestic building works that require Building Regulations approval and structural engineering calculations. Commission a review of new homes warranties to establish whether the warranties currently provided are adequate. 4. Make homes more energy efficient Reduce VAT on housing renovation and repair work from 20% to 5% to encourage refurbishment work, including energy efficiency measures. Ensure that any government investment in reducing energy bills is targeted primarily at improving the energy efficiency of the UK’s homes. 5. Boost growth among construction SMEs Ensure that the overall regulatory burden on small businesses is reduced as part of the Brexit process. Improve public procurement for construction SMEs and ensure local firms win a higher proportion of local authority contracts post-Brexit. The Civil Engineering Contractors Association The Civil Engineering Contractors Association lists its priorities as: • maintain and build upon the existing infrastructure pipeline • deliver a government industrial strategy with a construction sector deal • rebalance investment across the UK • guarantee the rights of EU workers living in the UK as a matter of urgency • protect the pound via public procurement • commit to remote onshore wind power.

New to the academy, ‘Benefits of Aircrete for Separating Walls’ joins ‘What is Aircrete’ and ‘How Aircrete is Used’ as indepth learning modules designed to clarify and demonstrate the benefits and uses of aircrete in housebuilding. The five minute e-learning course defines separating and flanking walls before detailing the thermal and acoustic benefits of using aircrete in

construction and why aircrete is the ideal choice for use in cavity separating walls.

Sheffield’s tallest building upgraded with Avire LCD displays

Residents of the tallest building in Sheffield have had their lift experience improved thanks to LCD displays from Avire. As part of an ongoing refurbishment programme, Curti Lifts Services has completed installation work and all 33 floors of St Paul’s Tower now feature an E-Motive C1L display. “Our residents can now clearly see where the lift is while they’re waiting for it,” explained Peter Shaw, development manager at City Lofts, who manages the building on behalf of Premier Estates Limited. “The feedback has been great, all positive. This was far from a cheap fix, but Curti Lifts Services advised us that the C1L was the most cost-effective option available and we were happy to take their recommendation, particularly given that another lead contractor had quoted considerably more for the project.”

Yet another World Heritage Site gets

Increase your natural lighting, instantly improve your mood Did you know that increased sunlight exposure directly affects your mood? FAKRO offers innovative roof windows designed to provide even more natural light, helping improve your health and quality of life. Optimise the effects of natural daylight and sunlight for the best living environment. Research shows that natural sunlight can have a powerful effect on our mood. Changes in daylight directly affects the pineal gland, which releases the hormones serotonin and melatonin. The body produces more serotonin when exposed to natural light, while excreting melatonin as the daylight fades. Increased levels of serotonin result in improved mood, while melatonin aids sleep and digestion. More light than with comparable roof windows FAKRO’s innovatively designed roof windows combine great ideas and craftsmanship to provide the ideal solution for anyone seeking to illuminate their interiors, without the need to install multiple windows.

Imperial Bricks has created an app to help housebuilders and developers identify the right brick for their projects. Whether out on site or in the office, the app makes it easy to view Imperial’s entire range of bricks and the relevant technical data. Users can upload a picture of existing brickwork, and Imperial Bricks’ expert team will send the closest brick match from its range – usually an exact match. Enter the dimensions of a wall, and the built-in brick calculator will determine how many bricks are required in either imperial or metric sizes. Users can also specify the brickwork bond – or pattern - used for an accurate estimation. It’s easy to source and compare bricks (including brick slips, ‘specials’ and pavers) by region, size, colour, level of weathering and texture. Users can request samples, brochures or even a site visit to determine the best brick. Jason Hughes, MD of Imperial Bricks says: “Our in-house brick experts are very knowledgeable on choosing the right brick for the right project. The Brick Matcher app is a great tool to find the perfect match for existing brickwork on refurb projects or to ensure a new build ‘blends in’ with surrounding properties.”

Advanced Fire Protection

Technicians at the FAKRO Research and Development Centre found that moving the vent to the top of the frame and the handle to the bottom of the sash enabled a greater glazing area. This is up to 16% larger than other manufacturers’ windows of the same size. The positioning of the handle also enables the windows to be positioned higher within the roofline without the need for electronic activation, giving even more light distribution.

Reducing unnecessary heat loss. It’s not just your wellbeing that could benefit! Natural light can lead to substantial energy savings as the free thermal energy through solar gain can be harnessed as part of an energy-efficient design. Durham Cathedral, the 1,000-year-old World Heritage Site and one of Britain’s most visited buildings, is now protected by market-leading intelligent fire panels from Advanced. The Advanced MxPro panels specified for the Cathedral were supplied by Custom Advanced Systems Limited and installed by Expert Fire Solutions, both long term partners of Advanced. The fire system covers the entire Cathedral complex, including the new ‘Open Treasure’ exhibition that gives the public access to previously unseen parts of the Cathedral. It is comprised of two MxPro 5 panels, linked by fault-tolerant network cards and supplemented by a remote display terminal. Alan Raine, Director at Expert Fire Solutions, commented: “Advanced panels are our first choice every time, combining innovation, ease-of-use and reliability. Durham Cathedral is a historic gem, but also a working ecclesiastical building with over 700,000 visitors each year, so the fire system needs to be specified to the highest level, while also fitting discretely within the fabric of the structure.” I enquiry 106 www.mclink.co.uk/1008-106

AURUBIS

Copper in the Park wings overlooking the park are highlighted by copper frames projecting out to add solar shading. Conceived as ‘a landmark for the University within the wider city skyline’, the tower is based on a cranked X-shape plan with two elements, one 21-storeys, the other 17-storeys, linked by glazing overlooking two local landmarks. The taller element is brick, contrasting with its copper clad neighbour which appears to float above the entrance pavilion. The copper cladding on all the buildings incorporates perforated copper panels for natural ventilation to bedroom units and living spaces, opened internally.

Nordic Brown products are pre-oxidised at Aurubis’ factory to give straightaway the same oxidised brown surface that otherwise develops over time in the environment. The thickness of the oxide layer determines the colour - either Nordic Brown Light or the darker Nordic Brown – and the darkening oxidisation process continues in the natural environment. Other Aurubis Architectural surfaces include Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’, as well as Nordic Green and Nordic Blue factoryapplied patinas developed with properties

Project architect Parminder Degan commented on the choice of Nordic Brown Light pre-oxidised copper: “The challenge was to provide a material for the tower which responds well to the autonomous colours of the site. Copper is a natural product which changes over time. The pre-oxidised finish accelerated the ageing process of the copper from a shiny material and provides a dark brown finish more in keeping with the site”.

06

Distinctive Nordic Brown Light pre-oxidised copper cladding plays a unifying role in Glancy Nicholls Architects’ competition-winning design of the Chamberlain Hall complex for the University of Birmingham. Set in a ‘listed’ historic park, the new complex replaces 20th century buildings that proved unsuitable for modern, sustainable student accommodation and unfeasible to improve. Conceived as a landmark tower with three adjacent, linear ‘finger’ wings, the complex provides 726 student rooms, split into 5 and 6 en-suite bedroomed clusters and 1-bedroom studios. Communal facilities including a bar, restaurant and conference space are provided in the ground floor of the tower. The footprint of the new complex sits within the perimeter of the previous buildings, minimising impact on the surrounding parkland. The architects’ ambition was to create a cohesive concept using materials and building forms to tie together the development as a whole. On the three ‘finger’ wings, brickwork matching local buildings acts as a ‘grounding’ material at low level with Nordic Brown Light preoxidised copper cladding as a striking, robust and high-quality finish above. The ends of the

and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. Aurubis copper alloys include Nordic Brass – also available pre-weathered – Nordic Bronze and the innovative Nordic Royal with a long-lasting golden colour. REFURBISHMENT & NEW BUILD

MIX AND MATCH DOORS with a little help from PREMDOR

As one of the country’s foremost door manufacturers, Premdor has one of the most extensive collections of internal and external door designs available to the UK market. It can therefore be seen that the extent of the colourways, designs and finishes provides the perfect opportunity to add value to a home or commercial establishment by mixing and matching contrasting door styles upstairs and downstairs, including external entrance doors. Whilst the use of internal wall colour, texture and design is the accepted norm, the concept of using doors to achieve a decorative effect can often be overlooked. Whether it be new build or a refurbishment project the coordination of a Contemporary Oak finish downstairs complementing a White Moulded option upstairs can lead to a dramatic decorative effect. To begin to understand the endless creative permutations see the latest Premdor product brochure and let your imagination mix and match.

ROADCHEF RAISES THE STANDARD IN ACCESSIBILITY Roadchef, one of the UK’s leading Motorway Service Area (MSA) operators, has announced the opening of a Changing Places facility at its Norton Canes site, on the M6 Toll. The new Changing Places facility at Norton Canes on the M6 toll will provide customers with specialist equipment and more space than is available in a conventional disabled facility, representing a significant investment by Roadchef. Installed by Clos-o-Mat, the market leader in away-from-home accessible toileting solutions, the 12m2 room features a peninsular WC, height-adjustable adult-sized changing bench, height-adjustable washbasin and a ceiling track hoist.

08

Simon Turl, Roadchef CEO, explained: “Roadchef prides itself on providing the best service on the motorway network and it is important to us that all of our customers are able to comfortably use our facilities. We’re delighted to now be able to meet the needs of all people with a disability and we look forward to welcoming customers who are now able to take advantage of this facility at our Norton Canes site” Changing Places campaigner, Tony Clough MBE, further welcomed the addition: “I am delighted Roadchef has invested in this Changing Places facility. This move provides motorists travelling north and south on the M6 Toll with the best, most accessible facilities when they stop during their journeys.“Changing Places mean that families like mine, with

someone who needs help with intimate care, can venture away from home, and relax.” Potentially up to 14million people need more space and/or additional equipment beyond what is found in a conventional wheelchair-accessible toilet. Under latest Building Regulations and good practice guidelines, a Changing Places toilet is ‘desirable’ in buildings to which numbers of the public have access. Since their introduction a decade ago, almost 1000 have been opened across the UK. Under British Standards, a Changing Places is in addition to conventional (Building Regulations Document M) wheelchair accessible toilets, and provides 12m2, with additional equipment including an adult-sized height adjustable changing bench and ceiling track hoist. Clos-o-Mat is Britain’s

leading provider of helpful toileting solutions, at home and away, including Changing Places and their similar Space to Change facilities. Uniquely, the company can provide an inhouse, ‘one- stop-shop’ complete package for ‘away from home’ assisted accessible toilet facilities, from design and commissioning, through to project management, supply and installation, and can also provide subsequent maintenance and repair. Its website www.clos-o-mat.com is the most comprehensive resource available about Changing Places for campaigners, providers and specifiers alike, with a raft of support information including white papers, calling cards, CAD blocks, video and case studies. It is one of many contracts Actavo has entered into with Northseal. Built between 1968 and the mid-70s, the New Farm Loch estate is a mix of medium-rise residential blocks and terraced homes. In terms of supply capability, the insulation project called for large volumes of scaffolding, as Billie-Jane Calder, Actavo’s area sales representative, explains: “The local authority was carrying out insulation work throughout the estate to improve the energy efficiency of the older housing stock. As the appointed scaffolding contractor, Northseal needed a supplier that could provide large volumes of scaffolding to cater for both the blocks of flats and the long runs of terraced homes which were all being worked on concurrently. She adds: “From the installation perspective, we

needed to supply a quick and easy solution so that work could start as soon as possible, thereby minimising disruption for residents.” The solution supplied by Actavo was the K-Lock system, which features a unique method of connecting ledgers and transoms to the standards in one, single action without using nuts, bolts or wedges. This node-locking principle makes K-Lock one of the fastest systems to install. Actavo has worked with Northseal to supply scaffolding services for residential blocks at Prestwick Toll, the Stewarton housing project and the Kelloholm project. Commenting on the partnership, director at Northseal Scaffolding, Lara Zavaroni, says: “We’ve been working with Actavo’s Glasgow branch for just over nine months and our business relationship has always been very professional. Our business with each other is expanding month by month. Actavo is our main supplier. We look forward to having a continuing relationship with such a progressive company.”

New clarity given for use of air admittance valves externally Drainage ventilation expert Studor has responded to market confusion about Air Admittance Valves (AAVs) and whether they can be used externally. “There does seem to be confusion in the market and we’re frequently asked whether AAVs are suitable for exterior use,” comments Studor’s Technical Director Steve White. “Both our own Studor Maxi-Vent, as well as the Wavin branded OsmaVent 110, can all be used externally. The latest BBA Agrément Certificates clarify this and specifically refer to their external use.” The BBA certificates verify that the AI rated valves perform in extreme temperatures, from -20°C to +60°C in

12

accordance with EN12380. However, it should be noted that the independent testing actually carried out exceeded the requirements of the standard and proved that the valves operate in temperatures down to -40°C without the insulating cap. In addition, the ABS plastic which the valves are made from includes a UV stabiliser to protect against any degradation effects from ultraviolet radiation. The certificates note that these external AAVs should be installed with the Aluminium Cover (Alu Cover) and insulating cap which fits on top of the valve to protects the unit from birds, wildlife and accidental damage. The Alu Cover, which can also be painted if there is a need to match a particular RAL colour, can be purchased independently of the AAVs as needed and is very easy to fit. “Our company has over 40 years of specialist knowledge in drainage ventilation” explains Steve White. “Installing an AAV externally protects against pressure fluctuations due to “wind effect” which can lead to traps self-siphoning. Another key benefit of using an AAV externally is that it allows a vent pipe to be terminated close to a window or other opening – removing the need for additional pipework to locate it further away. STARRETT

Solving the jigsaw piece puzzle Easily overcoming common kitchen installation issues

In 2015, over 594,000 people in the UK spent more than £4,000 on a fitted kitchen. Here John Cove, marketing manager at power tool accessories and hand tool specialist, Starrett, explains how contractors can make the most of the boom. Homeowners are increasingly prioritising the kitchen over other areas of the home due to the rising popularity of open plan living and multifunctional spaces. With such a rise in demand, kitchen installers are increasingly faced with challenging design requirements and materials that can often feel like an impossible jigsaw puzzle. Choosing the right jigsaw blade can be the missing piece that ultimately improves installation methods and quality of finish. Because the current industry trend for sleek, minimalist and contemporary kitchens shows no sign of slowing down, kitchen contractors and installers are being faced with an everexpanding range of materials. Wood, metal, plastic, ceramics, stone and fibreglass are all common parts of a homeowner’s design requirements, making the need for high quality power tools and accessories greater than ever. While jigsaws are amongst the most popular power tools used by kitchen fitters, due to the tool's resilience and powerful performance, frequent chipping of coated

surfaces, including worktops and kitchen shelving, is a common problem for installers. Innovative technologies and materials, including Starrett’s patented bimetal material and Dual Cut blades, provide the perfect solution for multipurpose cutting that creates the highest quality finishes in the easiest way possible. Bimetal Unique: Tool manufacturers have for decades used bimetal materials — the layering of one type of metal on top of another — in the manufacture of saw blades for a wide range of industries. Bimetal fulfils a wide range of installation requirements by taking advantage of the flexibility of both hard and soft materials. Starrett’s bimetal unique technology is a patented process which takes the production of bimetal material to a new level. Benefits for installers include much stronger teeth, improved heat resistance and greater blade life, when compared against competitive bimetal products. No chipping to the edge of the cut: It is widely understood amongst installers that damage to the edge of the material being cut can be the bane of any installation. Because jigsaw blades are prone to chipping the coated surface of a material as the blade leaves the cut, many installers choose to cut from the underside of the material or cover

the coating in masking tape in an attempt to combat this problem. This adds substantial time and risk to any job, in addition the rise in sleek kitchen designs has resulted in underneath edges often being left exposed as part of the interior style, meaning that chipping of the undersides of edging, shelving and other surfaces could be visible. In an attempt to combat chipping on the top surface, many jigsaw blade manufacturers offer blades with the teeth reversed so that the jigsaw cuts on the downstroke rather than the usual upstroke. Although this might initially appear to be a solution, the design specification of the blade makes installer use difficult. The downcut positioning can cause the blades to cut off straight vertically due to the sheer pressure of the blades pushing away from the machine. Even though the cuts might slant by only a few millimetres, the installation of sinks and other appliances can become a significant problem. To combat this issue, the Starrett BU310T jigsaw blade cuts as normal on the upward stroke of the machine but features ground teeth which create exceptional sharpness for a high profile finish. There is also no set on the teeth of the blade which limits further the potential for chipping of the surface coating. The result is a worktop cut straight, and cut from the top with a high quality, chip

free surface finish. Starrett’s bespoke Dual Cut jigsaw blades are uniquely developed to prevent the chipping of coated surfaces and slanting to create a polished finish on both sides of the material. The Dual Cut blade’s teeth are variable in size, with the spacing between the teeth also variable to prevent chipping on both sides, making it the ideal tool to cut shelf board and other similar materials. As the teeth point toward the centre of the blade, rather than downwards like traditional blades, resistance, durability and productivity for straight, curved and complex contour cuts is much simpler and more straightforward. As latest materials and aesthetics provide kitchen fitters with the opportunity to create installations that push traditional design boundaries, jigsaw blades that increase efficiency and reduce time scales provide the final piece of the puzzle for installers. The 594,000 people in the UK spending more than £4000 on a kitchen can sleep soundly, safe in the knowledge that the result will look every bit as good as they expect.

The rise of smart tech in the bathroom

The reality of the ‘smart home’ is becoming ever more apparent with the continued influx of products in the home that can be operated through smartphones and mobile devices. Driven by increasingly busy lifestyles, there is a growing trend for consumers desiring products that can offer not only an optimised user experience, but one that is personalised to an individual’s preferences. As technology continues to transform the bathroom experience, the toilet is the next logical step to benefit from advances in this field. Sensia® Arena, the innovative shower toilet from GROHE, is designed to maximise personal comfort and hygiene through gentle and smart cleansing. Already a standard feature in Asian bathrooms, shower toilets are now making big waves in other international markets. The innovative design of GROHE’s Sensia® Arena shower toilet caters to the global mega-trends of wellness-inspired bathrooms and products which promote the highest levels of body care. This trend is now impacting on consumer expectations within the UK and European markets. GROHE announced that its shower toilet market is increasing, with the category experiencing a 7% YOY growth in Europe. By 2020, GROHE anticipate that 1 in 500 homes in Europe will be equipped with a shower toilet. Maximise hygiene levels in the bathroom By combining the WC and bidet experience, the need to use toilet paper has been forever eliminated. Instead, the Sensia® Arena harnesses the cleansing and gentle benefits of water on delicate skin. GROHE’s AquaCeramic technology is used to create a non-stick surface while the anti-bacterial HyperClean finish prevents 99.9 per cent of bacteria growth. The Triple Vortex® Flushing action means that water is released from three outlets at once, creating a

powerful swirl to thoroughly cleanse the entire interior surface. The spray arms are also made from a 99.9% anti-bacterial material, which means the spray nozzles stay germ free, whilst also benefitting from automatic cleaning before and after each use. Personalised user experience with ultimate comfort levels The GROHE Sensia® Arena provides a touch-free cleaning experience using only water and warm air – an all-natural process without paper or chemicals. The product features multiple spray patterns, which can be altered to ensure that each user can enjoy their preferred water temperature, pressure, strength and position. These include a massage spray and an oscillating spray, plus there is a dedicated lady spray arm which is designed to provide specialised cleaning to intimate areas. After the personalised spray, a warm air dryer then provides fast and efficient drying. This means that each individual user has full control over their experience for optimised comfort. The product is digitally paired with GROHE’s Spalet app that allows the user to create a personal profile. This ensures that the shower toilet memorises your preferred settings- and these settings can be activated on any Sensia® Arena toilet you use, wherever you are in the world. A future-proof investment Many of today’s prospective and existing homeowners are thinking more seriously about their future needs and requirements, and how these can be achieved in the home without compromising on contemporary, stylish design. Driven by demographic change, demand for “multi-generational bathrooms” continues to increase. The Sensia® Arena requires minimal maintenance and cleaning, and offers a perfect combination of thorough body care, ultimate hygiene and personalised comfort. All of this can be controlled via an intuitive app, providing the ideal solution for the whole family.

An impressive asset to any project profile The Sensia® Arena also offers self-cleaning functions, automatic seat operation, soft nightlight, odour extraction and an automatic flush which can be operated via the remote control or app. The Sensia® Arena is designed to be kind to the environment, using less than one litre of water per minute, and has an annual energy consumption of 30kWh (estimated per 4 person household). In addition to its impressive functionality credentials, the Sensia® Arena also boasts a modern and elegant aesthetic, comprising a sleek, wall hung pan design that will not only look stylish but also help to maximise on space in smaller bathrooms. What’s more, the shower toilet has also won a range of coveted accolades, such as the iF Design Award, the Interior Innovation Award, the Plus X Award and the Green Good Design Award. This luxury, high-tech bathroom appliance provides the very best levels of hygiene and comfort, making it a valuable addition to any bathroom and a key asset for the project’s profile. This is an integral consideration as bathrooms are

‘Eastern promise’ with Gerflor

Staying fit and healthy whilst having some fun can be a recipe for a long, healthy life. Happily, many local councils UK nationwide have embraced this doctrine. The council-run Eastern Leisure Centre in Cardiff had more than 250,000 users last year, but was in urgent need of modernisation. New features would include an open reception area, improved changing rooms, gym and soft play facilities; a new dance studio and spin room. Councillor Peter Bradbury, cabinet member for community development, Co-operatives and social enterprise, said at the time, “The modernisation of Eastern Leisure Centre has enjoyed strong support from both the community and elected councillors so this multi- million-pound investment will be welcome news.”

DOORS, WINDOWS & GLAZING “We’ve made it accessible from traditional laptops and desktop computers with a mouse, and tablet devices like the iPad. It’s taken a little while to perfect, but our web development team has done an excellent job and we believe it will be a great tool to help our customers find the best looking door for their property. “

GARADOR LAUNCHES VISUALISE YOUR DOOR TOOL

Seeing what your property looks like with different doors and colours is great fun and picking out the right Garador garage door that looks good will help to maximise the value of your property; and this new tool is the easiest way available on the market to ensure you get it right. I enquiry 529 www.mclink.co.uk/1008-529

Garador has launched a new website-based tool to show exactly what their new Garador garage door will look like on a property. Garador’s Visualise your Door is a new tool on its website that lets you upload a picture of your property, mock-up an image of a garage door and then print it off. After speaking to customers across the country, Garador found that most customers wanted to see what their chosen door looked like on the house before they made the purchase. So Garador created the Visualise your Door tool, to help people actually picture what their garage door will look like on their property. The web based tool has been designed to be easily accessible from a desktop PC or tablet; making adjustments with a mouse or just your fingers on an iPad. Since most people have smart phones these days, they can quickly take a photo of their property, upload it, and then use the Visualise your Door tool to see what styles and

colours of garage door will work well with their existing windows, front door, house colour and architectural features. In addition, they can choose from the complete range of Garador doors and colours; including Up & Over, Sectional, GaraRoll and Side Hinged garage doors. Positioning a Garador garage door onto an image of your property is easy, and there are toggle buttons in each corner so you can accurately adjust the corners of the garage door panel so they fit neatly into the garage door opening. Once the door is in place, you can change the style and colour of the door at the click of a button from the options menu. “We’ve been working on Visualise your Door for quite some time now” said Garador’s managing director Simon Hipgrave.

ASD focus for Patol at FIREX

GEZE UK has pledged its support to the best of Scottish architecture for the third year running - through its sponsorship of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Awards Dinner 2017. The prestigious, black tie event will take place at the Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, on Wednesday 14th June where a range of awards for architectural achievement will be presented. These will include the announcement of the RIBA Awards for Scotland and the presentation of the Forestry Commission Scotland/Wood for Good, Historic Environment Scotland and Saint Gobain (Emerging Architect) awards to name but a few. Drawn from 84 entries, this year’s 27-strong RIAS awards shortlist comprises a diverse range of projects, a number of which feature GEZE UK automatic doors. More information can be found at www.rias.org.uk/awards/rias-awards/riasawards-2017.

Patol will be returning to Firex International with Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD) and the wide range of applications for which it is ideally suited very much the focus of attention. Exhibiting on Stand C125 at the three day show, Patol will be highlighting the capabilities of the Securiton SecuriRAS range of ASD systems, developed in Switzerland and manufactured in Germany, for which Patol is the exclusive distributor in the UK. ASD is widely employed as a fire detection technology, providing fast and early detection of smoke particles to ensure it is employed in many different environments, from warehouses, museums, IT and data centre facilities to laboratories, clean rooms and cold stores. Kelvin Miller is Sales Director for Patol and recognises the recent successes achieved with SecuriRAS as providing an excellent platform from which to build - “The food industry has been an area in which we’ve been particularly active. In several applications, the particular challenges of cold stores and their low temperatures have been met through our ASD offering. By introducing heated sampling points which are automatically activated if the monitored airflow drops below a pre-determined level due to the build-up of ice crystals, we have been able to provide early fire detection in what is typically a challenging environment for fire detection.”

Merseyside window fabricator Qualplas celebrates milestone birthday

Qualplas, the St Helens-based PVC-U window fabricator and long-standing customer of The VEKA UK Group celebrates three decades of business this year. The milestone will be marked with a wide range of activities and customer giveaways throughout the year. Since the very

beginning, Qualplas has been dedicated to providing top quality products and unbeatable customer service to all of its trade, retail and commercial clients. This commitment was cemented when the young company chose The VEKA UK Group as its number one supplier of PVC-U profile just one year into trading, before later also joining Network VEKA, which has quality craftsmanship and customer satisfaction at its core. In January 2016, ST Group Ltd – the parent company of Qualplas – was taken over by Huws Gray, the largest independent builders merchants in Wales and the North West of England. Largely the company has continued as previously, albeit with a slight change in the management team. One major change however, is the amount of miles the Qualplas delivery vehicles are now covering, particular within North Wales, resulting in an ever-widening customer base. Keeping the burglars out with steel windows Difficult to force because of the inherent strength of their frames, steel windows are not liked by burglars. One of the best deterrents to a prospective thief is the traditional ‘cottage’ style steel window, divided into small frames, with interlocked steel glazing bars. Steel Window Association members also offer W40 steel windows that comply with Secured by Design requirements. Newly appointed Steel Window Association member, Steel Window Fittings Ltd (swf), manufacture most steel window hardware. Swf has been successfully manufacturing handles, stays, hinges, bolts and openers, as well as safety locks/restrictors and concealed multipoint hardware for metal framed doors and windows, to the commercial and domestic sectors, since 2011; both in the UK and globally. Longevity of A Door Supporting winning Hinges on the Hinge! ways in Architectural Ironmongery

of Winners title going to the pairing that best demonstrates aesthetic excellence, fitness for purpose, functionality, correct specification and originality. The 2017 Winner of Winners were Lynch Architects and designer and manufacturer of high quality door handles, door furniture and ironmongery, izé, whose Kings Gate, Westminster scheme also won Best Residential Development. Managing director of GEZE UK, Kaz Spiewakowski, said: “GEZE UK has sponsored the last five GAI/RIBA Architectural Ironmongery Awards and is proud to support specification at its finest. We are committed to working closely with architects and architectural ironmongers to develop quality specifications, combining design aesthetics, functionality and energy efficiency seamlessly and feel that there is great synergy between the Winner of Winners award category and our brand.”

The simple hinge can actually be heralded as a revolution in the construction world and as such, leading manufacturers and solution providers in protecting doors, people and places, Intastop, is keen to highlight the importance of this simple but effective piece of ironmongery. Sarah Barsby, marketing director for Intastop commented: “The importance of a hinge is often overlooked but when considering the effect it has on door repair and replacement costs it really should be a priority. Particularly in public buildings where there is continual use and also public safety to consider.” The next generation, Continuous Geared Hinge, from Intastop addresses all these issues and more! Unlike other hinges it works by two full length, paired and geared levers. Each geared leaf rotates evenly from top to bottom riding on Delrin-Teflon bearings which generate a low operating force delivering easy opening and automatic closing.

Perfectly suited to a host of applications, the VEKA FlushSash is particularly well positioned to meet the growing demand for energy-efficient systems in the heritage sector. The VEKA UK Group's Sales Director Neil Evans explains: “As ever, VEKA has designed this new system with customers in mind. DOORS, WINDOWS & GLAZING

Deceuninck’s LinktrusionTM Technology chosen by one of London’s largest Residential Developers London and Quadrant (L & Q) is one of the UK's leading housing associations, owning and managing over 90,000 homes in London and the South East. They are also one of London's largest residential developers and a recent flagship project was the Abbey Road development in Abbey Road, Barking. The development consisted of the design and construction of 80 residential units distributed over 2 buildings and 7 storeys. Delivered in partnership with specialist commercial fabricator & installer partner Fast Frame, it was fitting that the innovative design specification of this attractive development showcased Deceuninck’s unique LinktrusionTM technology, completed in Decoroc Anthracite grey RAL 7016. Deceuninck’s Rob McGlennon comments: “LinktrusionTM from Deceuninck is changing the way the market specifies fenestration, thanks to a trademarked manufacturing process and material content that results in the best of both worlds: top performance thermal efficiency usually associated with PVC-U with the strength, durability and design freedom of aluminium but up to 30% lower cost. “Put simply, this unique manufacturing process removes the need for the traditional steel reinforcement that’s at the heart of virtually every PVC-U window frame and sash. The ground-breaking technology combines multiple material types to produce the window and door system, namely a combination of glass fibre reinforced sash profiles with an extruded reinforcement profile that has embedded steel wires in a low density insulating foam core encapsulated within a recycled PVC skin. To give you an idea of scale, this ‘fusing’ process results in 200,000 metres of fibre glass per

finished metre of window frame. “The benefits of this exceptional manufacturing process include the ability to produce windows which are as strong as steel reinforced windows, 30% more thermally efficient with U values below 0.8W/m2K, and savings on materials and weight of up to 40%. New design opportunities are also generated through slimmer sightlines and increased sash sizes (1150 x 2500 single doors) traditionally the domain of aluminium are now easily manufactured using LinktrusionTM. “From a technology perspective, the Abbey Road development is also interesting as it is one the growing number of commercial fenestration projects to feature Deceuninck’s Decoroc. Over one in four UK doors and windows are now coloured and Deceuninck leads in colour, selling 50% more coloured profile than the industry average. “Thanks to our experience in delivering large volume colour solutions to the commercial sector over many years, we’ve developed Decoroc, a unique coating which is applied at source meaning no retro-spraying or third party outsourced painting is required. Offering an extensive choice of contemporary colours with a matt or satin finish, the

Decoroc coating system applies a unique, tough and textured oven-cured coating which is incredibly durable, scratch resistant and wonderfully effective, making it the perfect alternative to aluminium.” Rob concludes: “With a heritage spanning eight decades, Deceuninck is one of the top three PVC-U extrusion systems’ companies in the world. Over 2,000,000 products are made from Deceuninck profile every year in the UK and many of these go into commercial new build and refurbishment projects. It’s precisely this experience and scale that means we are in the privileged position to be able to look at existing solutions - be it from a material, design or value for money perspective – and invest in bringing to market something better.” All Deceuninck’s products are available for download from the National BIM library. If you would like to receive a copy of our brochure or case studies, arrange a site visit to one of our many projects across UK, visit www.deceuninck.co.uk/specification I enquiry 533 www.mclink.co.uk/1008-533

ISO-CHEMIE

BUILDING FACADES: SMOKING JOINTS Andy Swift, national sales manager for ISO-CHEMIE, considers the effective sealing of building façades, which can prove to be difficult if failure, particularly in the form of water leakage, is to be avoided.

While a building façade should offer some degree of eye-catching appeal, its main purpose is to provide weather protection, and a safe and comfortable interior. If this is to be achieved and long-term performance and durability assured, the materials used in their construction need to be carefully designed, planned and installed.

28

Facades can come in all shapes and sizes ranging from heavy forms of construction through to brickwork and precast concrete to lighter structures such as profiled metal sheet, stick curtain walling, aluminium and glass screens. Final specification will have been decided by the client and the architect based on the purpose of the building, the image required, the design life of the building and whole life costs including energy and maintenance costs. One of the biggest onsite issues installers can face is how to effectively seal the façade. It doesn’t matter how much effort has been spent designing and developing the perfect joint and gasket if it’s then undone by an

incorrect installation by an untrained workforce that has little appreciation of the performance requirements of a sealed joint. And here the choice of sealant can be critical, requiring careful consideration and examination to achieve optimum levels of long-term sustainability and performance. Sealants, which must adhere strongly to the materials they connect, must also be durable and possess the requisite resistance qualities if they are to protect effectively against the elements. They must also offer compliance with acoustic and insulation regulations and accommodate movement joints - they need to offer flexibility without compromise while ensuring adjacent materials do not come under stress. The mantra of ‘fit tight, ventilate right’ should be adhered to. An air-tight building with controllable ventilation is the ideal design. The construction of commercial buildings must be tested for air-tightness in much the same way as domestic buildings: any air leaks after a failure can be tested using smoke pencils, which will draw smoke from the building and identify remedial works to conform to standards. Sometimes, these failures are through lack of design input and at other times, due to contractors not adhering to designs - usually due to a lack of understanding of the purpose of the specified products. Many sealants are likely to have a shorter useful life than the life span of the building unless they are protected and some provision should be made for replacing the sealants within the joints, or over sealing. Although a significant proportion of sealants that are used in façade construction today are ‘wet’ applied materials based on synthetic

polymers, which cure to form flexible solids, they do have their drawbacks: mastics will harden with time, rendering them particularly unsuitable for use in large scale industrial or commercial façade systems. So, as an alternative to these ‘wet’ solutions, the building and construction sector is seeing the emergence of foam-based sealing strips and tapes. These products consist of flexible materials, which are pre-formed in a range of sizes and sections and mainly rely on compression, and can be used to improve the long term sealing of façade finishes for curtain walling, pre-cast or in-situ concrete, brick and block work and composite or cassette-style metal panels. The ISO-CHEMIE ISO3 Façade Sealing system protects the expansion/movement joints as well as the junctions between different materials used in façade construction against the extremes of hot and cold and wet and dry weather together with the physical stresses caused by building movement. It can also be used to supply the relevant level of air tightness required by the current and proposed changes to the UK Building Regulations. The system complies with regulatory requirements relating to the different types of facades including conformity to EnEV regulations. It also complies with guidelines laid down by the industrial association for metal building constructions (IFBS) for joint tightness on lightweight steel constructions. Passivhaus award winning systems BLOCOOne and Winframer Type 1 are a good solution to fixing windows to facades when the external wall is not fitted, creating an airtight, structural and thermally efficient frame

to install windows. BLOCO-One also allows the window to be installed as a ‘3 in 1’ solution to the usual system of expanding tape weather seal, spray foam insulation and EPDM internal airtight layer-this saves time on installation and out performs the previous method. New advanced foils to replace EPDM are available. The VARIO SD/XD range now come complete with a full adhesive side which can be installed down to minus 10 degrees C, when regular sealants will have frozen and work halted. These foils keep vapour from entering the joint from the inside, but allow the joint to breathe from within and reduce moisture forming, causing fabric damage. The system comes with a 10year warranty and complies with the relevant UK Building Regulations, as well as DIN EN standards, covering thermal conductivity, dimension tolerance, impermeamability to driving rain on joints among others. ISO-CHEMIE is one of Europe’s main producers of impregnated foam sealants, specialising in the manufacturer of foam products from polyethylene (EPE), polypropylene (EPP) and polyurethane (PUR) using the latest production techniques. The company’s UK technical and distribution operation is supported by a dedicated logistics service to ensure customer orders are completed as quickly and efficiently as possible (usually next-day delivery). Four technical field advisors are on hand regionally to help designers and installers.

HEATING, PLUMBING & VENTILATION

RINNAI creates ‘system efficiency’ solution for longer life Limescale can be a major contributor to a loss of efficiencies for water heating systems of any type, so leading continuous flow water heater manufacturer Rinnai has taken steps to maintain superior efficiencies throughout the life of the system by incorporating a proven limescale inhibitor that will significantly reduce the impact of limescale, thereby maximising efficiency over the product’s lifetime. Rinnai has teamed up with electrolytic in line inhibitors, pioneers in limescale inhibitor technology, to maximise system efficiency on its range of A rated commercial water heaters. This electrolytic scale inhibitor kit is for commercial hot water systems. Independently tested, it is a low-maintenance way to protect against the damaging and expensive impact of limescale on hot water systems. Not only does it offer long lasting protection against the formation of hard limescale it also ensures bacteria has fewer places to hide as a result of cleaner surfaces, so in a secondary return DHW system the problem of Legionella is also heavily reduced. The independently tested and proven technology protects capital investment and occupier health.

low level zinc additions change the water chemistry to inhibit the formation of limescale by transforming calcite in such a way that they do not stick to the interior of the unit or pipework. The system delivers value engineering as it does not decay after dosing and its effectiveness is not impacted by water storage or agitation caused by passing through a booster set.

Rinnai has recently supplied its system efficiency systems for London-based SGA Consulting, a specialist in low energy buildings, after liaising with the practice’s mechanical engineer Vivek Devan on two restaurant projects. Devan says “The Rinnai units are compact and their smaller footprint both physically and environmentally made them a good choice here. The scale inhibitor technology was also a factor.” Devan spoke with Rinnai technical experts before specifying the units and heard that Rinnai is actively promoting and selling scale inhibitor solutions following the successful results obtained from various trial sites. The electrolytic unit may be installed in the rising main, before the water heater and booster set. Capex cost savings are probable because the rising main pipe size is often a smaller diameter than the hot and cold water distribution pipe sizes. Therefore, just one inhibitor system will treat the whole location, also offering an attractive value engineering opportunity. The inhibitor is widely specified and installed in a range of sectors such as manufacturing, hotels, retail and supermarkets, healthcare and education as well as public authorities.

The electrolytic zinc anode technology used in this solution is mentioned in the Part L Building Services Compliance Guide, whereas “external to pipe” water conditioning techniques are not. The system’s

For buildings using BMS systems, a Pulse Splitter is an option that provides water flow rate or water usage data directly to the BMS from the water meter in the system. The inclusion of the electrolytic system in Rinnai’s A-rated continuous flow water heating systems delivers peace of mind to installers and end users as performance is maintained throughout the lifetime of the appliances. The scale protection units are available in a variety of pipe sizes – large 67,76 and 108mm; medium 28,35,42 and 54mm; and small 22mm.

Gas powered heat pump for home

South West Heat Pumps Ltd. (SWHP) has installed a Robur K18 gas powered heat pump boiler to provide heating and hot water to a three bedroom home in Gunnislake, Devon. Owner Mr. Jackson, along with SWHP, evaluated a range of possible replacements for his old, inefficient non-condensing boiler and decided on the Robur K18 as the most cost-effective solution. Powered by natural gas, but benefitting from renewable energy from air, the Robur K18 offers exceptionally low running costs, at least 38% below the cost of a modern condensing boiler, but can still provide water up to 70°C, just from the heat pump. Supplied by Robur importer ESS, the K18 has an 18kW output and is intended for use in larger or older properties with a high demand. The capital cost is substantially below that of a ground source heat pump and the running costs are lower and the performance is better than an equivalent electric heat pump. The Network Rail Tyseley depot in Birmingham has fulfilled a crucial maintenance role as part of the UK’s railway network for many years, with facilities for the overhaul and repair of locomotives. And just as the trains it services have changed radically down the decades, the depot’s own plant and equipment have required updating, with an advanced Modupak R40 Series Boiler arrangement from Stokvis Energy Systems now having been installed in place of the redundant Boilers.

In case you hadn’t noticed, the world of news has changed rapidly over the last few years with social media transforming the way we as individuals receive and consume information. Platforms such as Twitter are often the best place to pick up breaking news and even Youtube offers a news service, so the traditional methods such as newspapers and even TV are facing stiff competition from almost every angle. You are also far more likely to come across an article or piece of news that you simply may miss if you only ever receive the ‘tailored’ items that your app believes you want, which is important in these days of needing to keep up with legislation. And of course, you are less likely to be the victim of ‘fake’ news if you rely on a reputable source. A new approach: So you might be interested in a new website that promises to offer comment and opinion on a host of issues relating to energy use in the built environment. Called The Hub, it’s the brainchild of leading manufacturer, Mitsubishi

RINNAI takes on man v machine challenge Rinnai, manufacturer of the market leading Infinity hot water heating units, has started a challenge that puts its product against tough opposition in the form of super league rugby team Widnes Vikings. Rinnai, an official sponsor of the Widnes Vikings rugby league club, put its Infinity water heaters head to head with the players in a contest of Man v Machine. The result is a series of YouTube videos that, right from kick off, see the Rinnai brand putting in a sterling performance.

• Rinnai water heaters are accurate to 1°C of the chosen set point but how accurate are the Vikings? After putting the team members through their paces in two gruelling playoffs, Gil Dudson, Vikings front row, headed the leader board for the club overall on both tasks – pulling 180 kgs in 10.93 seconds (most stored hot water systems are considerably heavier that Rinnai’s sprightly 31kg) and kicking the oval ball at a Rinnai unit to test accuracy – and the Rinnai units won hands down for specifiers, installers and end users alike.

The challenge laid down to the Vikings was: • Rinnai water heaters can produce 1000+ litres from a unit weighing just 31kg. How quickly can a professional rugby player pull this weight against his peers?

REHAU has launched NEXUS, the world’s first system for hot tapping PE-Xa district heating networks. REHAU NEXUS makes it possible to retrospectively extend an existing heat network or add a ventilation or measuring point to a district heating system using REHAU orange PE-Xa pipes. In the past, hot tapping was only possible with polymer pipes in cold water and gas mains and with steel district heating pipes. With REHAU NEXUS, expansions can be carried out during operation and under pressure without disrupting the supply, making retrospective connections up to 80 per cent quicker. And because installers only need half the installation trench space compared to conventional squeeze-off techniques, NEXUS can save up to 50 per cent on civil costs. When dealing with hot water, safety is paramount. That’s why NEXUS has been designed with a unique 3D silicone seal, which fits perfectly around the pipe and offers exceptional durability, even in temperature malfunctions up to 110°C. NEXUS’ Teflon coated clamps are also designed for maximum temperature resistance and safety.

DO MORE WITH 3X GRIPPING POWER* It’s common knowledge amongst trade professionals that failed locking pliers result in busted knuckles. However with the IRWIN® VISE-GRIP® Curved Jaw (CR) locking pliers, tradesmen needn’t worry anymore. With a self-energising lower jaw, that delivers 3X more gripping power than traditional locking pliers, there’s no chance of any slipping or stripping. There’s no need for heavy input pressure too as the jaws tighten for maximum grip as torque is applied to the tool. The pliers are

available in two models: Fast Release™, with a one-handed, triggerless release and anti-pinch, non-slip ProTouch™ Grips; and Original™, with a classic trigger release. “Other manufacturers’ traditional locking pliers only allow a couple of contact points on a round or hex work piece, resulting in the tool slipping or failing to loosen a frozen bolt,” said Rafael Martinez, Sr. Brand Marketing Manager at IRWIN, “The

IRWIN® VISE-GRIP® CR, on the other hand, establishes multiple contact points with the work piece, guaranteeing a significantly tighter grip. They cannot be beat for tightening, clamping, twisting and turning.” “In addition, the slotted geometry of the ‘self-energising’ VISE-GRIP® Curved Jaw locking pliers rapidly increases torqueing power, and more torque means more clamping power. In fact, the CR range provides the strongest grip ever. You can practically stand on these locking pliers when

they’re torqued down and never worry about stubborn jobs,” concluded Martinez. IRWIN® VISE-GRIP® Fast Release™ locking pliers have a one-handed, triggerless release, so they’re easy to open and speedily reset on the jobsite. In addition, the antipinch, non-slip ProTouch™ Grips feature moulded handles for comfort and leverage while reducing vibrations and hand fatigue. The Fast Release range is especially wellsuited for performing in greasy work environments where there may be lots of lubricants, and for maneuvering in tight spaces where a worker cannot easily get two hands on a tool. The new IRWIN® VISE-GRIP® Curved Jaw (CR) Locking Pliers include lengths of 5inch, 7-inch, and 10-inch models. The full range of VISE-GRIP locking pliers, including

Construction site protection experts, VPS Site Security, have added a wireless emergency system (WES) early warning fire safety and evacuation network to their range of specialist rental products and services. The VPS FireAlert Wes+ (‘Wes plus') has already built a substantial track record, with over 50,000 units operating on some of the biggest and most high profile construction projects in Europe, including Cross Rail and Heathrow. The VPS FireAlert Wes+ mobile wireless fire safety and evacuation system is an advanced technological solution for the construction industry that is fully approved and externally certified to the European EN54 standard for fire alarms. It is also CE marked and compliant with all key safety guidelines and legislation, helping to meet the legal requirements and recommendations of insurers. A key feature is that as a construction site changes, the system is so flexible that the units can be moved easily and simply to protect the new dynamics of the site. Up to 250 units can be networked wirelessly, and the base station automatically performs silent alarm tests with each unit on a regular basis.

Work safely at height with new aluminium telescopic ladders from Draper Tools When it comes to working at height, it’s vital to have equipment you know you can rely on. New from trusted brand Draper Tools are two highquality, versatile aluminium ladders, available in an 11-rung and 13-rung model. Manufactured in accordance with EN131.6 standards, the ladders help ensure maximum safety when working at height. Don’t forget, in the UK all employers must comply with the HSE’s Work at Height regulations, which state that the risks from work at height must be assessed and that appropriate work equipment is selected and used. Each of the new Draper Tools ladders comes fitted with sturdy slip-resistant feet which help to stabilise them when in use. The telescopic mechanism allows the 11-rung ladder to reach a height of 3200mm and the 13-rung ladder to reach a fully extended height of 3800mm. There’s a convenient control mechanism for safe and easy operation of this telescopic function. The ladders can be securely closed with ease when not in use, thanks to their handy hook and loop straps. The 13 rung model measures only 905mm when closed – perfect for transportation and access into confined areas. Suitable for a range of

Make sure your face masks have built-in face-fit checking

Just like voters in the forthcoming General Election, you have a choice. As a health and safety decision-maker, you can choose to specify the tried and tested JSP® Force™8 half mask fitted with PressToCheck™ P3 Filters - which enables wearers to check their face-fit - or you can choose a mask without this option. Winner of the 2014 BSIF Product Innovation of the Year Award, PressToCheck™ is the UK’s leading respiratory protection solution with integral face-fit checking. The system (patents pending) enables workers to ensure they are protected against fine construction dust including silica. Choosing a mask without this feature such as a disposable paper mask, you run the risk of inward leakage around the mask. Inhaling inwardly-leaked hazardous air could endanger wearers’ long term health. JSP’s PressToCheck™ filters are more than 99.95% efficient, keeping out almost all airborne particulate hazards in the workplace. The system allows the face mask to be correctly fitted and checked at every donning, and throughout the day, to ensure an optimum face-fit is achieved. I enquiry 138 www.mclink.co.uk/1008-138

Total Training included on new register of apprenticeship training providers

Total Training Company UK Limited, which has centres in Birmingham and Hartlepool, has received official notification from the Skills Funding Agency that it is to be included on the new Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP). The register has been created to support the new Apprenticeship Levy, which was introduced by the UK Government in April 2017, as the new mechanism for apprenticeship provision for companies and students. Requiring all employers operating in the UK with a payroll bill of more than £3M to invest in apprenticeships, the new funding scheme commenced on 1 May 2017. Total Training was required to demonstrate that it is able to deliver apprenticeship training to employers using the service and who are able to pay for the necessary programmes. CROWN

Crown Decorating Centre takes artistic challenge to heart A UNIQUE city centre art project in collaboration with a Crown Decorating Centre has broken new ground with its innovative use of paints. The Nuart project in Aberdeen has seen five stunning artworks created by internationally renowned street artists and brought to life with expert advice from the city’s Crown Decorating Centre. The giant paintings now bring an amazing splash of colour to buildings across the Granite City and have been created using Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth paint to ensure not only an excellent quality finish but also colours which will stand the test of time. The high profile murals range from a spectacular artwork covering the city’s central market building, by internationally renowned German art duo, Herekut to Australian Fintan Magee, who returned to his Scottish roots. Nuart Aberdeen features a total of eleven artists’ work and was brought to the city by business organisation Aberdeen Inspired and Aberdeen City Council, and was supported by main sponsor Burness Paull LLP. Adrian Watson, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said: "The Nuart Aberdeen festival was a remarkable success and attracted thousands of people to see many colourful street art murals on walls around the city centre. "We were keen to source the highest quality paint for our internationally acclaimed artists and Aberdeen’s Crown Decorating Centre was the perfect fit for us. “Each artists’ paint and equipment needs were met by their very knowledgeable and helpful team, and we are delighted with the results which have added a welcome splash of colour to the area. “The festival will leave a legacy in the city as all of the murals will remain in place for people to engage with and enjoy, and we are working to bring Nuart back to Aberdeen in 2018.” Explained Alan Paterson, manager at the Crown Decorating Centre in Clifton Road, Kittybrewster Shopping Centre: “The organisers of Nuart were keen to work with a local supplier, so they came to us for advice on the best paints to use to ensure they lasted and met the needs of the artists. “The artists came into the store and showed us pictures of what they wanted to do and we were easily able to work out what was best for them and how much paint they would need.

44

“We have supplied hundreds of litres of paint, rollers, brushes and other essentials. It’s certainly not our runof-the-mill painting project but we are very proud to have been a part of something that has had such big impact on our city. The Sandtex Trade range has a wide variety of colours available, so the artists were able to take off-theshelf colours and then if they wanted a particular shade, they were able to mix the paint themselves to create the exact colour they wanted.

“It is certainly a first for our store to be involved in such a high-profile art project, but it just shows the versatility of the paints we offer and shows that Crown Decorating Centres put customer service at the top of our agenda. If we can help a client achieve new things, no matter how complex, we will.” I enquiry 560 www.mclink.co.uk/1008-560

CLADDING MAKES AN ‘IDEAL HOME’ Every year one of the most popular elements of the Ideal Home Show at Olympia, London is the full size show homes. Visitors to this year’s show were treated to two stunning properties, both featuring Freefoam Fortex cladding. Insullite is making extensive use of high performance multi-foil insulation from YBS in the construction of its replacement roofs. Since the Managing Director, Neil Birchall, and his brother set it up five years ago, Insullite has grown its business serving trade as well as private domestic customers right across the UK, enabling property owners to make use of their outdoor rooms all year round. They achieved this by developing a lightweight, timber framed replacement roof structure featuring the use of the YBS SuperQuilt multi-layer insulation, which is actually suitable for use across the entire building envelope. The choice of the well proven - and BBA accredited product, enables the Insullite conservatory roof to achieve Building Regulation approval while maintaining the elegantly low profile appearance complementary to existing conservatories. Managing Director, Neil Birchall commented: “The Insullite solid tiled conservatory roof has been intelligently designed to solve all of the common problems that conservatory owners face: we do this by using a multi-layered foil insulation system. Our solution features a SuperQuilt 19 layer multi-foil insulation, which has an excellent thermal value as it deflects the extreme hot and cold temperatures away from the occupied space. We also employ a sound deadening insulation, which unlike rigid materials, completely silences the weather.

David Richards, Director David Richard Associates, commissions the homes each year and explained the background to this year’s projects “We wanted to showcase the flexibility of modern PVC building materials and to show how they can be used on both contemporary and traditional developments. Both homes were constructed off site by Futureform Housing Ltd so we needed to source a light, easy to handle product that would withstand the rigors of transportation and look good at the show. We have been delighted with the Freefoam cladding range and its performance throughout the project and would recommend it to homeowners and housebuilders - it made a stunning finish

Lucideon introduces new testing service: resistance to WindDriven Rain of Roof Coverings with discontinuously laid small elements

Abet shelters the rescuers

Lucideon has launched a new structural testing service ‘Resistance to Wind-Driven Rain of Roof Coverings with Discontinuously Laid Small Elements’. The testing program is performed against the PD CEN/TR 15601:2012 standard and specified for: lower roof pitches, weather-tightness of roofing joints and severe exposure. Testing is carried out in Lucideon’s UKAS accredited testing laboratory (No. 0013) by structural engineers and physical testing scientists who have extensive knowledge and experience of the roofing industry. Joanne Booth, technical manager structures and facilities at Lucideon, said: “The modification of roofs is quite commonplace, from necessities such as vents to added aesthetic benefits, such as extra light from Velux windows. It is important that any discontinuous element, in other words anything that creates an extra join, does not cause weaknesses or breaches in the roof structure.” I enquiry 151 www.mclink.co.uk/1008-151

Originally specified with metal cladding, the client wished to replicate this look for less cost, while achieving the same beautiful finish. Jonathan Woods, Managing Director at Contour, once more proved that Sarnafil’s single ply membranes can accommodate the most complex builds, while offering the client one of the most robust extensive product guarantees on the market. Contour worked closely with Sika Sarnafil to generate a bespoke specification with Sika Sarnafil’s recently launched Self Adhered membrane in lead grey, and décor profiles to emulate metal seams. Custommade Sarnametal details were cut and fabricated to accommodate the various angle changes on the roof, including vent grills to the base of the cube.

RUBIK’S CUBE ROOF SOLVED BY CONTOUR ROOFING AND SIKA SARNAFIL Following last year’s NFRC Roofing Awards win, Sika Sarnafil Registered Contractor Contour Roofing, has once again been recognised for its outstanding work, making the shortlist in the Single Ply category.

With the success of its previous award-winning project, Ewart Grove, a London residential new build, Contour was called on again by client Paul Simon Homes to offer a premium waterproofing solution for Cheltenham House. Another new build project in London, comprising of 11 luxury apartments, the entire roof and vertical works are shaped like a Rubik’s Cube – a puzzle that was no match for Contour Roofing’s problem solving skills.

Sarnafil’s new spray-applied adhesive Primer 610 was quickly and carefully applied to all the vertical areas, to accommodate the application of the Self Adhered Membrane. The weight of each drop (over 18kg) proved extremely challenging, and had to be secured with a peelstop, and fixed at every point with stainless steel SFS fixings. The décor profiles were installed with upmost precision and careful measurement, creating symmetry and uniformity on all four sides of the building. Jonathan Woods explained: “Every single detail on this project has been carefully planned before application of the products. Coupled with the wealth of experience invested by our contract manager and award-winning fitters, the project was finished to perfection.

“Sarnafil advised us to use the new Primer 610 and Self Adhered membrane and helped us to understand the product with demonstrations at its training academy and our offices. Change is always tough, certainly with experienced fitters, but we insisted that the Self Adhered membrane was paramount for the success of the roofing works at Cheltenham House. The product is quick and easy to use and leaves a beautiful finish to any application it’s used on.” Commenting on the delivery of the project, Carly Tang of Paul Simon Homes said: “After the huge success of Ewart Grove, we reached out once more for the services and expertise of Contour and again they did not disappoint. We were able to offer a project well under budget and on time, thanks to the hard work of the team and the innovative Sika Sarnafil Self Adhered product.” For more information on Sika Sarnafil’s products and services, call 01707 394444, email sarnafilroofing@uk.sika.com or visit http://gbr.sarnafil.sika.com. KEMPEROL KEEPS LONDON’S SILOS FUNCTIONAL Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free and odourless waterproofing membrane has been used to refurbish an 85 metre high food silo on London’s River Thames.

May 2017

KEMPER SYSTEM

Working in conjunction with Capital Roofing Co Ltd of Blackheath in Greenwich, the client, ADM UK, needed a swift refurbishment of one of its silos containing linseed, as water was leaking in. Capital Roofing Co Ltd chose Kemperol 2K-PUR to refurbish the roof and expansion joints around the perimeter of the silo because of its ease of application and difficult to access project location. The contractors were able to install Kemper’s liquid system on top of the existing felt roof. After cleaning and priming the substrate, the Kemperol 2K-PUR resin was then applied in a single, wet-on-wet process. Reinforcement fleece was laid directly onto the first application of wet resin, immediately followed by more resin on top to ensures complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece. Once cured, the system forms a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate, is UV stable, and creates a strong bond directly to the substrate. Because of the exposed location of the silo, contractors were faced with high winds during installation. The handling and laying of sheet membrane materials would have increased the health and safety risk, so Kemper’s two-component liquid applied system was ideally suited to the conditions. Chris Shulver at Capital Roofing Co Ltd, said: “This tricky project required a durable

48

waterproofing solution that was quick and easy to apply given the location of the silo. Not only did Kemper’s Kemperol 2K-PUR system offer these benefits, but we could also provide peace of mind to the end client that the solution would ensure a completely seamless and durable waterproofing solution for many years to come – even in its exposed location. “Operatives had to work at greater heights than normal on this project, facing the elements as well as strong winds. Application of Kemperol doesn’t require any hot works needing gas bottles or boilers so it was easier to transport product to site, and we could complete the job quickly and to the full satisfaction of the end client.” Stuart Hicks at Kemper System Ltd, added: “The plant was first built in 1902 and has expanded over the years to provide more milling and processing silos for speciality feed ingredients. Because this particular silo contained food, a solution to stop the water ingress needed to be devised as quickly as possible. Kemperol 2K-PUR’s speed and ease of installation meant the plant could continue to function with very little disruption.” ADM mills tonnes of wheat per year at its London site as well as six other facilities in England and Scotland.

An

Brand

Aggregate Industries’ Masterblock business has invested £2 million into improving its block product operations at three of its factories across the country, in response to a steady increase in demand from the housing industry. With the need for new homes in the UK increasing, and strict targets imposed on councils by the government, there has inevitably been a surge in housing activity over the last couple of years. This has led to an increase in demand for block products, and the investment in Masterblock will enable it to increase its production capabilities of lightweight and dense concrete blocks to help meet the demand. The £2 million improvements were made at three of its factories: Croft Block Plant in Leicestershire, and its Torr and Callow Block Plants both in Somerset. At Croft, Masterblock’s largest factory, an ‘egglaying’ operation has been added to create greater capacity to service the Midlands region.

UKDN Waterflow (LG) Ltd has been granted full PCL status and has marked the occasion by winning an extension to a multiroute infrastructure maintenance contract. The company, part of Lanes Group plc, achieved a provisional PCL (Principal Contractor Licence) 12 months ago. Since then, it has significantly grown its drainage maintenance services for Network Rail. With full PCL status, UKDN Waterflow (LG)'s rail division hopes to get the opportunity to scope, design, plan and implement even more types of drainage related rail maintenance and asset rehabilitation projects. Network Rail has also extended a COOM multi-route contract with UKDN Waterflow (LG) to provide drainage maintenance services across seven rail routes. Eamonn Maloney, Head of Rail Services for UKDN Waterflow (LG), said: "Achieving full PCL status reflects the quality of our service to Network Rail and the dedication of our team.

acryl copolymer emulsion, Resiblock Resiecco. Despite being trafficked by approximately 80 million visitors since it’s opening in June 2007, and subjected to an aggressive daily cleaning regime, Resiblock Resiecco continues to stabilise the jointing sand firmly in place whilst also minimising staining from contaminants including food, grease, hot drinks and chewing gum. The 10 year-long success of Resiblock Resiecco at The 02 Arena, London, is another example of the great longevity and durability of Resiblock’s ‘sealing, stabilising, protecting’ products as well as endorsing the confidence that is placed in the Resiblock name. The O2, Arena’s slogan ‘better connected’ is certainly applicable to Resiblock Resiecco and the internal paving after a decade and long may it continue to do so.

During the The 02 Arena – London restoration programme in 2007, 12,500 square metres of small element flexibly laid internal paving was installed, and then sealed with Resiblock’s low viscosity thermoplastic-

PRODUCT NEWS / STOP PRESS accreditation. The comprehensive engineer training course line-up for 2017 includes nine modules: Rinnai product overview; Continuous flow and the future of water heating; Intermediate water heater; Continuous flow - Excellence in design; Service and fault diagnostics (Water heaters); Service and fault diagnostics (Energy saver warm air units); Understanding ACOP L8 and hot water system design; Maximising renewable gain in hot water design; and, Continuous flow as an innovative method of satisfying energy and regulatory demands.

Demand escalates for Rinnai training Rinnai is a registered provider of CPD courses, which it has developed over the past few years, earning praise from the CPD Certification Scheme for the design of the courses. The manufacturer has seen an upswing in demand for its training as specifiers and engineers alike have switched on to the energy saving benefits of the A-rated Rinnai Infinity range. Rinnai’s qualifications as a provider of CPD courses are impressive: as the UK and European market leader in the supply of gas fired continuous flow water heaters for commercial, domestic and renewable integration, Rinnai is at the forefront of innovative and efficient systems and technology. As Rinnai UK Managing Director Tony Gittings explains: “The UK water heating industry is facing a myriad of environmental and politically driven market forces, including the need to reduce carbon emissions within new and existing buildings.

In the training modules we clarify and engage with the market to assist decision making and understanding of the different messages faced by today's engineers, installers and designers. “Rinnai can demonstrate how innovation can reduce the burden on fossil fuels while maximising renewable gains. We also look at the growing support for continuous flow technologies and how this can benefit the industry versus traditional gas fired storage systems and analyse water heating design and specification discussing technical issues associated with product installation.” “Our training facility and CPD training courses ensure key market personnel at all levels can benefit from nationwide training from our highly skilled team of technical experts. Ensuring they are up to speed with changes in legislation and product developments. Rinnai can also deliver bitesize one- hour courses to suit your needs,” says Rinnai associate director Chris Goggin.

CPD Roadshow courses are also available for M&E consultants and specifiers, design and build engineers, facilities managers and gas contractors. For installers, specific hands-on training can be tailored to cover all aspects of commissioning and servicing processes. The Runcorn training facility has recently been redesigned and enlarged to cope with demand and is fitted with all the latest Rinnai technology so attendees can be assured they are gaining experience on the latest energy saving appliances and systems. These training events are aimed primarily at engineers and facilities managers. The courses don’t just look at the individual units but also explore system design and how to deal successfully with legionella. The most popular course modules are ‘Understanding ACOP L8 and hot water system design’ and ‘System design incorporating continuous flow and renewables’. Engineer courses are held on the first and last Thursday of each month at Runcorn. More courses are in the process of being added, including one on the new Rinnai Infinity Solo, which is now awaiting CPD

The only manifesto to worry about this election is yours going to be a hot topic for whatever government gets in.” Our “Greener Fleet Manifesto” to help drive the UK Fuel Card Services has created its own manifesto, to help your fleet become more sustainable – and to drive the issue home for the government after the 8th June election. 1. Work out your strategy: Capturing data is the key, giving you a baseline from which to work to more effective solutions. Determine your fleet objectives by developing realistic, measurable goals. Then consider incorporating these objectives into your fleet policy documentation. Prioritise your efforts strategically. Look for the greatest opportunities in your fleet for reducing emissions first.

54

As the UK General Election accelerates towards us on 8th June, the political parties race to define their manifesto. Labour released theirs early, and whilst it appears to promise many incentives, one key policy was missing: the green or environmental issue. Given that the UK will fail to meet the Paris Agreement unless it cuts harmful vehicle emissions more rapidly, has already been

slapped with a £300m fine for failing to meet 2010 targets, and that the latest air quality plans have been described as weak, this is a key area the new government will have to steer through – whoever’s driving. Steve Clarke, Group Marketing Manager of Fuel Card Services, commented ‘It’s now more important than ever to ensure that business owners and fleet managers have support to understand how they can become more sustainable – especially given this is

2. Optimise fleet use: Creating a list of each vehicle’s task and operating requirements to see if you’re using the best vehicle for the job and whether you’re optimising your fleet. Do all your vehicles need to be used all the time? Consider vehicle sharing, getting more use out of some could reduce overall costs for fuel, maintenance, insurance, and registration across your fleet – which adds up. 3. Buy the right vehicle for the job: Evaluate the total impact a new vehicle will have on your fleet. Taking a full-life approach

will enable you to work out the total cost of ownership more accurately. Choosing vehicles with better fuel efficiency performance not only saves you money on fuel costs, it can also reduce your emissions. When determining the right vehicles for your fleet, your goal should be to drive down fuel and maintenance costs while increasing residual values. Look at all your options beforehand. 4. Keep your vehicles properly maintained: Keeping your vehicles properly maintained is one of the simplest and most effective ways to ensure fuel efficiency and more sustainable operations. Find out where to get clean tech vehicles supported as there are limited maintenance facilities and certified technicians to work on them. 5. Change your drivers’ behaviour: Keeping your drivers informed about, and actively engaged with, your fleet’s sustainability efforts is essential to ensuring your fleet works in the most efficient way. A full version of this manifesto will be available in the next issue of The Green Journey – our free sustainability guide for busy fleet managers, with invaluable news and practical advice. Offshore Oil Rig Installation with ATEX Mag Meter

Intratone returns to CIH for fifth year running

Bell Flow Systems were recently approached about a sea water pumping application for an offshore oil rig. The customer required a highly accurate meter to fit onto an existing 3” line, which would be suitable for operation in an ATEX zone 1 hazardous area, and also capable of withstanding the harsh conditions that come with being offshore. In addition to this, the meter was required to come with a UKAS accredited calibration and EN 10204 material certification.

One of the country’s oldest established brickworks, located in an idyllic Cotswold village, has updated its production facilities saving not only time and money but significant amounts of energy – thanks to the use of Marmox Multiboards for the refurbishment of its drying chambers. Ten separate drying kilns have now been upgraded at Northcot Brick’s premises in Blockley, Gloucestershire, with two different thicknesses of the high performance, moisture resisting insulation boards having been employed to infill their walls and roofs. Soon to celebrate its 100th anniversary, the handmade brick specialist not only uses its own locally quarried clay, but prides itself on providing specifiers with an environmentally responsible and sustainable product range, continuously striving to improve productivity as well as reduce use of energy. As a consequence, Northcot’s Maintenance Manager, Tim Nicklin, sought an alternative to the use of metal panels with a rock mineral wool core for the chambers’ roofs and walls as they typically lasted little more than a year.
