DESPITE RISING COSTS Small construction firms enjoyed rising workloads in the first quarter of 2017, despite growing concerns over the cost of labour and materials, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). FMB’s State of Trade Survey

for Q1 2017, which is the largest quarterly assessment of the UK-wide SME construction sector, include: UK construction SME workloads increased more significantly than at any time since Q2

2016 ie the quarter immediately prior to last June’s EU referendum; One in two construction SMEs predict rising workloads in the coming months, with just 5% predicting a decrease in activity;

85% of builders believe that material prices will rise in the next three months; 58% of firms are struggling to hire carpenters, a post financial crisis high. Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “The first three months of 2017 proved to be very positive for construction SMEs, which reported strong growth, underpinned by continuing resilience in the home improvement sector. Workloads rose in every part of the UK, with particularly positive results in the devolved nations. Given the concerns that wider consumer confidence might be weakening, it’s encouraging that smaller construction firms aren’t sensing any drop-off in demand for their services. Indeed, despite Article 50 being triggered and the growing likelihood of a hard Brexit, these latest results demonstrate that builders are increasingly confident about the immediate future, with one in two forecasting higher workloads during the next quarter.” Berry continued: “The survey covers the period before the announcement of a snap General Election, which may well cool consumer demand in the coming months. The results are also tempered by a clear rise in output costs for construction companies. Material prices and wages rose markedly in the first three months of this year, with larger numbers of construction SMEs believing that all three will rise further during the next quarter. Indeed, although only 20% of construction products and materials used in the UK are imported, the depreciation of sterling since the referendum last June has seen material prices shoot up – with 85% of builders predicting further rises – this pressure on margins looks set to continue. Such cost inflation presents clear challenges to the profitability of smaller building firms and in many cases, builders will be forced to pass these price increases onto their customers.” Berry concluded: “The combined effects of rising material costs and the ever-worsening construction skills crisis will therefore be reason enough for SME construction firms to be cautious in their optimism. If growth in real household income remains flat, and if consumer confidence is shaken by the impending snap General Election and the triggering of Article 50, there are plenty of potential pitfalls for builders to navigate. Nevertheless, as of yet, the much anticipated ‘Brexit effect’ has yet to hit what is considered to be the bellwether sector of consumer confidence and wider economic health.”

New home planning permissions up again Numbers are a strong indicator of future supply- but more smaller sites needed. Permission for 293,127 new homes were granted in 2016, the highest yearly total since the HBF Housing Pipeline survey began in 2006 and a strong indicator that increases in house building are set to continue. The number of permissions granted tends to be reflected in the number of homes being completed around three to four years later – a delay indicating the time taken to navigate the planning system from an initial, outline planning permission to the point where actual building work can start. The industry welcomes the fact that Local Authorities are continuing to increase the number of permissions they are granting but there is concern that the number of sites permissioned is falling by 11% compared with Continued on page 2

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is funding a £600,000 programme to help hundreds of people to become qualified on-site training assessors. The assessor infrastructure project is designed to increase the number of on-site training assessors available across Great Britain. This in turn will increase the number of construction workers holding nationally recognised qualifications, the CITB said. On-site training assessments are targeted at construction workers who have the skills, experience and training but no formal qualifications. Assessors visit construction sites to confirm workers’ skills and test their ability in the workplace and, if successful, award them a national vocational qualification (NVQ) or Scottish vocational qualification (SVQ). The programme follows research by CITB last year in which small and micro-sized construction

February sales see landscaping up but decorating down Builders’ merchants’ daily sales were up again in February 2017, despite the wet weather. Year-on-year, February sales were 1.1% down on February 2016 but average sales per day were 3.9% up when adjusted for a difference in trading days. Six product categories saw marginal gains in February, including Tools (+1.8%) and Plumbing Heating & Electrical (+1.1%). Workwear & Safetywear (3.6%), Decorating (-4.4%) and Services (-7.1%) saw the biggest declines. Month-on-month, February sales were up 6.1% on January (+11.4% adjusting for trading days). Despite February being wetter than January, Landscaping was the top performer, up 23.5%. Other categories out-performing total merchants included Kitchens& Bathrooms (+12.3%) and Heavy Building Materials (+6.5%). Workwear & Safetywear was weakest (-6.2%), one of only two

firms highlighted a need for more on-site training assessors. CITB assessment & verification manager Richard Miller said: “Small and micro-sized firms have told us they need on-site training assessors to help qualify more construction workers across the UK. The assessor infrastructure project will give workers with the right skills and experience the opportunity to become qualified and get the recognition they deserve without being away from the job. CITB is committed to ensuring the construction industry has a fully qualified workforce that’s competent to build the homes and infrastructure Great Britain needs.” Graham Warren, asbestos control and abatement division manager at the Thermal Insulation Contractors Association (TICA), said: “By our estimates, over 6,500 asbestos operatives and supervisors will require a national vocational qualification in the next five years. This funding from CITB will not only provide a real boost to assessor numbers and NVQ achievements, it also shows CITB is committed to proactively supporting the asbestos sector, which is invaluable.”

categories to slow. January and February sales combined were 2.8% ahead of the same two months in 2016. Tool sales were strongest (+ 5.0%). Timber & Joinery Products (+ 3.3%) and Heavy Building Materials (+3.1%) also did better than total merchants. The three months December to February 2017 were 8.0% up on the same three months a year before (or +4.4 % when adjusted for trading days). The rolling 12-month period, March 2016 to February 2017, was 4.5% up on the previous 12 months. February’s Builders Merchant Building Index was 100.5 (104.2 adjusted) in Fenraury 2017, up from 94.7 in January. Plumbing Heating & Electrical, influenced by seasonal factors, had the highest index (116.1). Other above average categories included Kitchens & Bathrooms (110.2), Ironmongery (109.4) and Tools (101.7). The Builders Merchants Building Index (BMBI) tracks builders’ merchants’ actual sales to builders and contractors using GfK’s Builders’ Merchant Point of Sale Tracking Data. The BMBI represents more than 80% of the value of the builders' merchants' market.

New home planning permissions up again Continued from page 1 2015 (from 19,600 in 2015 to 17,500 in 2016) indicating permissions are being granted on larger ‘strategic’ sites. Whilst the headline number of plots permissioned now exceeds the pre-crash peak by around 15%, the number of sites on which those homes could eventually be built is down by more than 10% on the same time period. Because of the infrastructure requirements on larger sites, these permissions tend to take longer to start being delivered. It is also key that Local Authorities are realistic about the rate at which large sites can deliver and don’t expect one large site to address their housing requirements. As per the Government’s Housing White Paper, local authorities need to work with developers to determine accurate build out rates so they can accurately predict the number of homes are being delivered on a site- and thus overall housing delivery in their area. The average permissioned site has increased by 16% in the last 18 months as local authorities, with ever-stretched resources focus their attention on larger sites. This highlights the problems small housebuilders have in finding suitable sites and progressing them through the planning process, issues explored in the recent HBF report, Reversing the Decline of Small Housebuilders, which found that returning even to 2007 levels of SMEs in the sector could boost housing supply by 25,000 homes per year. The Housing White Paper took on one of the report’s recommendations, calling for local authorities to provide a mix in the type and size of sites it is granting permission for- and not rely on a few large sites. Whilst housing supply is up 52% in the past three years we are still not delivering enough homes to adequately cater for our population and the planning system remains one of the major constraints on supply. Speeding up the rate at which builders get onto sites, and ensuring Local Authorities abide by their responsibilities and allocate sites that meet their local housing needs are key requirements if the house building industry is to deliver much needed housing. Commenting, Stewart Baseley, Executive Chairman of the HBF, said; “We welcome the fact that local authorities continue to increase the number of planning permissions being granted. The number of permissions being granted is a strong indicator of future housing supply and will feed through into completed new homes in the years to come. “The drop in the number of sites on which the permissions are being granted on is concerning. As the White Paper indicates, we need to ensure that permissions are being granted on a mix of site sizes and that local authorities are not reliant on one or two large sites. A mix of site sizes will better ensure a flow of housing completions and also enable SME builders to play their part in delivering new homes.” “Allan Wilén, Economics Director, Head of Business Market Intelligence at Glenigan said; “The strong level of unit approvals during the final quarter of 2016 takes the number of new homes securing planning approval last year to its highest level in over a decade. Growth has been largely driven by private housebuilders and the strong development pipeline demonstrates developers’ confidence in the long term prospects for the UK housing market. Encouragingly the fourth quarter also saw a recovery in social housing project securing approval.”

Flame-free sustainable roof refurb for Stockton school Conyers School in Stockton-on-Tees has benefitted from an extensive roofing refurbishment using 3,000m2 IKO Mach One, which guarantees reliable waterproofing and protection for at least 20 years. Project management consultancy Faithful+Gould asked IKO PLC to carry out a comprehensive survey for the academy, which included guidance on the overall project. The single layer, bituminous membrane IKO Mach One was

recommended as a flame-free, sustainable and fast-fit system. The project also included an enhanced insulation scheme with new modular and structural mono-pitch roof lights. The original survey identified various separate roof sections at the secondary school and sixth form that were in different states of disrepair. Five areas called for immediate replacement due to their poor condition; a further three were replaced shortly afterwards. “IKO has a good relationship with Faithful+Gould, having worked with the company on similar projects in the past, notably Cramlington Learning Village in Northumberland,” explains Stephen Mooney, Area Business Manager for IKO Roofing Specification. “Many of Conyer School’s buildings had roofs which were in a very poor state, warranting immediate action. It was essential that the replacement roofs were reliable and would last as long as possible. The IKO Mach One membrane comes with a 20-year warranty providing the superior cover and protection the school requires.”

Tower Bridge, a brand new luxury development including 400 apartments and 80,000 sq. ft of retail, leisure and cultural space, stood out from the crowd. Through the integration of pioneering materials, the build was designed to strike a balance between contemporary design and historic style. The product behind the concept was Wienerberger’s Smeed Dean London Stock brick - chosen for the project to complement the architectural character of traditional brickwork that has been used throughout the capital. The brick is composed of a truly unique combination of

materials; local chalk, brick earth, town ash and clinker preserved from the fire grates of Victorian London – giving it its celebrated look and finish. With the expertise of some of the industry’s leading innovators, including Jon Cornish, Director of Taylor Maxwell, one of the UK’s leading facade solution providers; David Ottway of Smeed Dean; Rhonda Burr of Wienerberger and Damian Bates, a Senior Project Manager at Berkeley Group undertook material selection to ensure the project and the selected products were of the highest quality.

A property developer constructing an enclave of detached properties in an east Hertfordshire village is making extensive use of products from the portfolio of YBS Insulation, to ensure the exterior elevations offer excellent thermal performance while controlling moisture movement. The five new homes are being built by Land & County Development Ltd., at Furneux Pelham near Bishop’s Stortford, with Braintree based Helix Design Solutions Ltd. having filled the role of architect for the project. After originally considering rigid foam insulation and a conventional vapour check for the walls, the builder is employing YBS Insulation’s SuperQuilt within the timber frame construction. This is combined with the manufacturer’s Breather Foil FR externally, both products being supplied through Minster Insulation. voestalpine Metsec plc has provided its Metframe pre-panelised steel-framing product for a new Travelodge hotel on the Thetford Riverside Development in Norfolk. The use of modern methods of construction allowed efficiency savings to be made and ensured the initial build phase of the project was completed within budget and to tight deadlines. Thetford Travelodge is a 62-room hotel and is part of a 41,000 sq ft redevelopment of the riverside area in Thetford, which will also see the construction of a three-screen cinema and five restaurants. Opened in Autumn 2016, the investment into modern retail and leisure facilities represents a key part of overall renovation plans for Thetford town centre. Work on the project began in June 2015 with Metsec product installed onsite by approved Metframe installer Vietchi Interiors in just eight weeks between December 2015 and February 2016. The Metframe load bearing walls and concrete floors formed the top three storeys of the hotel building.

VELUX ahead of the curve with launch of new rooflights Curved glass rooflight is a world first Leading roof window manufacturer VELUX® has launched the world’s first curved glass rooflight for flat roofs. The VELUX curved glass rooflight features CurveTech, an innovative curve-shaped glass top that lets rainwater easily drain off the surface – even on completely flat roofs. That means daylight is able to shine through without raindrops getting in the way. The new curved glass rooflight offers a number of other unique benefits for homeowners looking to bring in more daylight through the roof: • A fully programmable control pad offers remote control operation of out-of-reach rooflights. Practical pre-fitted rain sensor closes the rooflight automatically in the event of rain. • A combination of insulating PVC frame and double-glazed, low-energy inner pane ensures heat does not escape through the window and helps to maintain the home’s ideal indoor climate.

• The curved glass shape provides natural drainage of rainwater, negating the need for regular cleaning. Toughened glass makes it virtually impervious to damage from the elements. Maintenance free PVC material used on the interior frame is also easy to clean. Five different sizes of rooflight will be made available in April, along with another three

at the end of May, providing homeowners with flexibility when looking for roof windows to match room size. Recent research into the flat roof window market by VELUX revealed that over half of single storey extensions in the UK have flat roofs, and over two thirds of flat roof extensions have no glazing in the roof. Grant Sneddon, product manager at VELUX

said: “We are extremely proud of our new curved glass rooflight range - the first of its kind in the world. “Our own research has shown that many homeowners do not realise the daylight potential of glazing in the roof until after they have they have completed their projects With our new curved glass rooflight, we have expanded the choice of flat roof windows available to homeowners, allowing them to mix and match to suit each room in their home. Flat roof extensions can often be seen from other levels of the house so, as well as proving a range of interior benefits, we have designed the curved glass rooflight to look great both inside and out.” The base unit of the VELUX curved glass rooflight is the same as other flat roof window products, making installation hassle free for installers. The new curved glass rooflight is available now.

Glendyne complements Prestigious new property Cembrit Glendyne, a top of the range natural roofing slate from Canada, has added distinctive style, character and impressive performance to a newly built private house in Flintshire. Situated in a well-established area of Northop Hall village in Flintshire, the newly built property is constructed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding countryside. The property is a four bedroom detached house which features an attractive pitched roof with five pediments, five velux windows, two valleys and some lower roof slopes. Jewson, a leading builders’ merchant supplied 240m2 of Cembrit Glendyne to the project through its branch in Buckley. Having worked with Cembrit before, Flintshirebased roofing contractor, Daniel Crossley selected 500x350 blue-grey Cembrit Glendyne natural slates for the project and installed approximately 4,000 slates on the roof of the house and 500 on the garage roof. The slates have been fixed using copper nails in line with best practice for natural slate fixing and long-term durability of the roof. “With all the gables and pitches, the roof was certainly a challenge from an installation point of view,” says Daniel Crossley. “We chose Glendyne for the project due to its consistency, as that makes it easier to install, as well as the aesthetic appearance and durability.”

Acoustic panels connect history London’s so-called Loom building is full of stories that unravel and offer glimpses into its rich history. It is not often that architects, in this case Duggan Morris, have the opportunity to design a perfect link between both modern and ancient. This is the exactly what has happened in their innovative solution converting one of East London’s old

buildings from its original purpose as a wool warehouse into a modern office space. This includes the relocation of its main entrance and provision of offices plus staff breakout areas and a café, together with unique features such as dramatic woven metal welcoming gates to bespoke artworks which dominate the multi-storey atrium. Another of the architects’ solutions was to use Troldtekt 2000 x 600mm natural wood wool acoustic ceiling panels. These provide an attractive link between the different spaces in this 100,000 sq ft. building, together with reusing many original old materials to restore attractive life into this previously neglected space. Existing brick dividing walls have been cut through and the original steel supporting stanchions left in place. I enquiry 106

Accessible eco home makes a statement in colour After Steve Hudson was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, he and his wife Barbara searched for a wheelchair friendly property. Eventually, the couple found a rural property for demolition to make room for a new, purpose-designed home. As part of a raft of eco friendly features, Steve and Barbara specified Earthborn paints throughout. Barbara said: "The Earthborn colour palette is fabulous and it inspired us to use around 15 different shades." Steve added: “The painters were very impressed with Earthborn’s covering power. The texture was quite a talking point with them.” Aside from the aesthetics of Earthborn paints, their formulation benefits Barbara’s health. She developed skin allergies a few years ago and wanted a paint that would not trigger them off. Earthborn paints are made without oils or acrylics, so they are virtually VOC free. That means there are none of the strong smells associated with oil based paints and they do not give off any toxic emissions, so are much better for the health of building occupants as well as the environment. The case for factory finishing timber: Cheshire Fire & Rescue, Lymm

Kalwall® brings light and security to Gatwick Airport Good lighting is always essential but sometimes a well-lit interior also needs to be discreet when viewed from outside. This is the case with the very long Pier 1 which runs alongside the baggage system and gates at Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal Building. The two stringent requirements of privacy and security have been neatly solved using Kalwall®, with the added benefit of enhancing the long walkway by creating a pleasant interior ambience. Kalwall offers complete line-of-sight protection, maintaining privacy for building occupants while bathing the interior with diffused daylighting regardless of the weather. It can also be manufactured for blast resistant applications such as in airports and other sensitive public environments, or to protect workers in areas at risk from explosions, such as in refineries or industrial complexes. Kalwall is also key to overcoming security concerns. Apart from providing visual protection, its inherent strength makes it ideal for secure locations. With heavy duty impact resistance properties, access through wall or rooflights can be denied while fire and most chemicals will not affect its surface I enquiry 110

The benefits of full factory finishing of architectural timber, combined with the use of translucent coatings to bring out the lustre of natural wood, are ideally highlighted in the construction of a new-build fire and rescue station in Lymm, Cheshire. While factory finishing is becoming more prevalent, it is still far from the norm, despite the many distinct advantages shown in this project, as Graham Avery, Technical Coatings Manager with specialist paint supplier Mighton, explained: “It not only means the process can be carried out in a completely controlled environment but also of course the entire piece is coated, not just the outside surfaces. In other words, the work

can be done 365 days a year, whatever the weather – and the result is significantly more weatherresistant. “More specifiers and coaters are beginning to look to full factory finishing and, to anyone who is not, we recommend they give it some consideration in an application such as this.” Similarly, translucent wood coatings are a less common choice than opaque finishes though, as the Lymm contract shows, they can show off the timber grain to its best effect while retaining all the weather-proofing and preservative qualities of a technically advanced exterior coating. HOT WATER HEATING continuous flow systems shows dramatic savings – Says Independent Report A recent independent report emphatically concluded that continuous flow water heating systems have a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs as well as life cycle costs over 20 years, when compared with traditional stored hot water systems*.

The study** shows that continuous flow water heating systems can be up to 7% more economical than equivalent ‘traditional’ stored hot water systems but that capital costs can be 41% less than indirect systems and a whopping 49% less than direct systems. “In terms of maintenance you need to be realistic and not theoretical,” says Rinnai managing director Tony Gittings. “If a site has direct or an indirect system then it has to effectively shut down for maintenance. There’s no way around this problem. Not so with Rinnai continuous flow units as we cascade them together so that the demand for hot water

can be met without closing down the whole site.” AECOM, the world’s biggest building services consultants, was commissioned to carry out a totally independent life cycle study on continuous flow water heating systems, and to provide a comparison with conventional storage systems. Two case studies were provided on projects using continuous flow water heating systems. AECOM then determined an equivalent storage based system for each case study and compared operational and capital costs. For the life cycle comparison, the analysis period was 20 years, based on the expected service life. The net present value (NPV) calculation is based on a discount rate of 3.5% (The GREEN BOOK - HM Treasury), an inflation rate of 2% for servicing costs and projected retail fuel costs from DECC1. In both case studies the continuous flow system showed a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs, as well as life

cycle costs over 20 years, with the continuous flow system consistently lower in energy use than the two storage systems. Case study 1 This was a system for a typical, small, pre-fabricated fast food restaurant. It is assumed the system only serves the hot water demand. The life cycle analysis includes the initial capital costs, projected annual fuel costs, and estimated annual servicing costs which are assumed to increase by 2% each year. The annual fuel cost assumes the same daily fuel consumption over the whole year. The servicing cost is based on £130/year per boiler, and £160/year for a boiler and cylinder. The resulting net present values of the three showed that the continuous flow system is 6 - 7% lower than the two storage systems based on that 20-year analysis period. Case study 2 This was a system for a shower block in a holiday camp, with six showers and four basin taps. For the continuous flow option, the analysis is based on a configuration of 4 continuous flow water heaters that each have a nominal output of 48 kW, which, for this particular application, because there is a very short run of pipe work between the water heaters and the fixtures, it is possible for the water heaters to generate water at 40°C. The risk of legionella is overcome by the regular turnover of the system. For the energy required to deal with the instantaneous hot water demand the analysis assumes that the bulk of the hot water demand would be due to the showers. Each shower would typically have a flow rate of around 9 litres per minute, which if mixed to 40ºC would equate to an instantaneous load of around 19 kW each, so even if there was only one shower running, the load on a single continuous flow water

heater would equate to an efficiency of 95% based on the performance curve. As the hot water demand increases, the modular nature of this particular configuration would allow the 95% efficiency to be maintained for the bulk of the demand. The difference in daily fuel costs between the three systems is around 7%. The usage profile for this case study is particularly suited to continuous flow systems (i.e. high but infrequent demand over the day), which is why there is an advantage in fuel consumption over the storage systems. SYSTEMS EMPLOYED IN THE STUDY * Indirect fired storage systems This consists of separate heat source and storage cylinders, where for this study the heat source will be gas fired boilers running on 80ยบC flow and 60ยบC return with gross efficiency of 89%. As the hot water is stored at 60ยบC in insulated cylinders there will be standing heat losses. The standby electricity is assumed to be 15W per boiler, and 60W when operating to cover fan and controls. Direct fired storage systems This is where the hot water storage cylinder has an integral gas burner to directly heat the water, and the key difference with indirect fired storage systems is that they are designed to operate in condensing mode and generally achieve gross efficiency up to 96%. A disadvantage of direct fired storage systems is that the standing losses are around 3 times higher than indirect storage cylinders. Continuous flow systems This is essentially a gas boiler that is designed to instantaneously heat mains water for supply directly to water fixtures without any storage. The key advantages with this type of hot water heating, is firstly saving in space needed for hot water cylinders and the associated standing heat losses. The challenge is that instantaneous hot water demand can vary hugely for most systems and therefore the continuous flow heating system needs to have a wide modulation range as well as maintaining efficiency over that range.

Imperial change for vessel manufacturer

I enquiry 513

Pressure vessel manufacturer Zilmet has announced that post Brexit, it will revert to imperial specifications for all of its UK supplied products. The company which is the leading supplier of heating system expansion vessels to the UK market, is best known for its CAL-PRO range. Zilmet’s distinctive red vessels are a feature of a huge percentage of UK heating systems and will become available from one to 190 gallon capacities, with a maximum system pressure of up to 70 psi. Managing director Stuart Gizzi said: “Whilst the metric system was sensible and allowed standardisation of specifications and production right across Europe, there was never any problem when Great Britain worked in pounds, feet or inches. I admit that anyone aged under 50 might find it a bit more challenging working in multiples of 12 or 14 but anything that encourages people to think can’t be a bad thing. The manufacturing change will probably result in a slight price rise, but we expect I enquiry 116 that this will not exceed a few shillings per unit.”

OPTIMISED ERGONOMICS Although the previous generation of machines as a whole, and the trigger gun in particular, gave little reason for complaint, data from the survey showed further user enhancements could be made. The trigger gun was extensively improved with regard to handling and technology. The most noticeable feature is the trigger which, for the first time, is at the back of the handle. The operator no longer needs to press the trigger of the high-pressure gun with their fingers, but can now push it into the handle with the ball of their hand or the area of their palm. An easy safety lock, depressed with the forefinger, is all it takes to release the trigger. One press is all it needs. The new arrangement of the lever at the back also offers the advantage that hardly any holding force is required during operation.

Redefining the Man-Machine interface Ergonomics - the key to pioneering developments for pressure washers

The necessary holding force is produced virtually as a secondary action of the constant recoil of the high-pressure jet. To ensure that this effect functions reliably, the spray lance, trigger gun and trigger form a working plane so that the recoil acts as a linear force on the operator's forearm. The force necessary to control or operate the high-pressure gun and hold the trigger is shifted from the quickly tiring hand muscles to the large muscles of the forearm and upper arm. For the operator, this means that an angle between the forearm and upper arm of about 90 to 120 degrees, only a low force needs to be exerted when cleaning with the EASY!Force trigger gun. The holding force for the trigger is zero. This relieves the strain on the finger and hand muscles to a large extent. The Munich physician, Dr. Marius Pfaller, explains: "Static work, where a muscle remains contracted for a period of time without movement, is one of the main causes of muscular strain. This ergonomically sophisticated solution greatly supports the ability of the operator to work with the high-pressure cleaner for long periods without fatigue." The new arrangement has also made it much easier to switch off the spray jet. Relaxing the ball of the hand slightly causes the actuation lever to spring back to the stop position. To prevent accidental operation, it is automatically locked by the safety switch.

When it comes to cleaning tasks in the industrial, commercial or public sector, pressure washers are one of the most frequently used machines. These versatile machines remove virtually all types of dirt. However an important prerequisite for efficient use is that the technology and handling allow fatigue-free working, even during long periods of operation. In principle, all pressure washers are constructed in a similar way. However, those using different models over a prolonged period soon notice significant differences – irrespective of the performance data such as maximum working pressure or flow rate. When it comes to real-life usage, it is aspects such as convenient operation and ergonomics in particular that enable the operator to work more efficiently.

Based on comprehensive market analysis and supported by extensive user surveys, Kärcher, the global market leader for cleaning technology, has analysed its professional cold and hot water pressure washers. This showed that the trigger gun still has potential for improvement as an accessory – particularly from an ergonomic point of view.

To use a pressure washer, often for hours at a time, requires concentration and strength. And this is where the trigger gun, as the most important interface between man and machine, offers an interesting starting point for innovation. Improved ergonomic handling gives the operator the ability to work more easily and efficiently. For example, high trigger holding or pulling forces can quickly cause finger fatigue. Imprecise control of the spray lance or repeated work interruptions due to cramp in the hand muscles impact upon comfort and effectiveness too. Many of those surveyed said that setting up and changing attachments was timeconsuming and strenuous. If attaching a pressure hose or spray lance or changing a nozzle becomes a nuisance, because release levers or fasteners are difficult to open, the enjoyment of work is usually over before it even begins. Operators also find leaky valves particularly annoying. Apart from constantly dripping water, pressure can reduce due to a leaky valve in the trigger gun, particularly when the pressure washer is started up again after a long break. To prevent this happening, a machine with this fault must be switched off completely prior to each break.

The symmetrical handle allows for comfort in operation for both right and left-handers. An optional continuously rotatable support can also be fitted. In particular when working at 250 bar under full load, this enables precise control of the spray lance. In addition, it contributes to relieving the strain on the muscles of the arm-hand system, as the high-pressure gun can be supported easily against the body at an ergonomically favourable shoulder angle of eight degrees. To improve handling even further, the pressure hose connection was also moved to the front of the trigger gun under the barrel. This allows precise control of the spray lance when cleaning as the pulling forces of the hose are closer to the axis of rotation between the spray gun holding points.

TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS In addition, the technological and functional aspects of mechanical details such as attachment connection options, e.g. nozzles and other spray attachments were scrutinised. The speed with which the attachments are changed in particular was the main focus of the analysis. In order to retain the tried and tested robustness of the twist locks, as well as make them much quicker and easier to open and close, a quadruple trapezoidal thread was developed as a solution. With a 6 mm pitch, a single 360 degree turn is all it takes to open the lock or obtain a tight and reliable connection. The system is patented under the brand name "EASY!Lock" and will be used on all new professional series pressure washers in future. However, it can also be retrofitted on older machines using a special adapter. The nozzle thread seal on the spray lance (O-ring) was also improved. This now sits radially directly in front of the retaining thread. This makes the seal far more durable and it can no longer fall out another improvement that was developed in close cooperation with customers who had lost them or struggled with the small part with cold or gloved hands. The shut-off valve was also scrutinised as part of product development. This is because impurities such as mineral residues and small metal particles liable to become lodged between the valve seat and ball can permanently damage the valve. To ensure an even higher degree of operational safety in this respect, the previously metal valve components have been replaced with ones made of high-strength ceramic material. Despite the fact that lodged residues can still cause temporary leaks, the ceramic sealing surfaces are not damaged due to their hardness. Opening the valve briefly is sufficient to flush out the residues and establish a tight seal again. This was primarily achieved by tried and tested concepts and consistent improvement of all man and machine interfaces based on comprehensive tests with customers from agriculture, building cleaning and local authorities. The "EASY!Force" trigger gun is suitable for all professional cold and hot water pressure washers from Kärcher with a maximum pressure of up to 300 bar. The new trigger gun is manufactured at the Kärcher factory in Winnenden. The trigger gun is assembled in a specially developed, fully automated assembly facility and all functions have to undergo complete testing. I enquiry 516

MicroCESAR wins Plantworx Security Innovation Award

Securely fixes and supports during dry construction

Datatag has won the Plantworx Security Innovation Award, for the second time, with their innovative new product, MicroCESAR.

The recently launched system, designed for small power tools, impressed the judges in a tough award category with a record number of entries. MicroCESAR was developed as a reaction to the growing issue of small tool theft in the construction, agricultural and landscaping markets and uses a combination of unique Datatag RFID transponder and tamper proof warning/registration label, with an integrated QR code. In this way each piece of equipment is given a unique ‘fingerprint’ that thieves will find virtually impossible to remove. Like CESAR, the official security and registration scheme for large construction and agricultural equipment, MicroCESAR acts as both a powerful deterrent against theft and an invaluable aid to recovery. It also provides the police with quick and easy verification of ownership without the need for special equipment or lengthy laboratory testing. I enquiry 118

Do more with welded carbide teeth Marketing Manager for IRWIN. “They need a blade that helps get the job done, quickly and cleanly. The durability of this blade reduces time spent changing blades and increases productivity.” The IRWIN WeldTec Circular Saw Blade range includes: - 5x WeldTec blades for cordless saws - 20x WeldTec blades for corded saws To celebrate IRWIN’s innovative range of products that allow tradesmen to do more on the job, the tools manufacturer is giving end-users the chance to win some DO MORE prizes when they purchase any IRWIN product. IRWIN® WeldTec™ Circular Saw Blades deliver 50% longer life and are extremely durable even under extreme working conditions. These IRWIN blades feature WeldTec™ Technology which means the welded tooth bond is up to 25% stronger than a brazed joint, so your blade will last longer if it hits foreign objects like nails and staples that could otherwise cause a blade to break. The sub-micro grain carbide teeth are also 70% stronger than standard carbide teeth. UC2 carbide stays sharper, longer because the carbide grains used to form the teeth are smaller, providing the tightest packing of carbide possible for a quality, durable cutting edge. This allows for ultra compact carbide teeth that provide best-in-class cut quality.

U-Power’s revolutionary new RedLion Safety Footwear dramatically reduces fatigue and increases wellbeing

U-Power’s brand new RedLion range, the latest in the company’s collection of original, Italian-designed, work-to-leisure safety footwear, has been conceived with the hugely improved health and wellbeing of the wearer resolutely in mind and features one of the most exciting developments in the industry. The sporty, high-performance, RedLion is a range with a difference – it represents a breakthrough in terms of research and innovation by incorporating a revolutionary new sole using Infinergy®, made of expanded thermoplastic polyurethane (E-TPU), as opposed to the traditional PU. This insert springs back into its original shape immediately after impact, so helps to maintain energy for longer periods than a conventional shoe. RedLion therefore reduces stress, pressure, fatigue, backache and other musculoskeletal disorders thanks to this revolutionary insert, which returns more than 55% of energy to the wearer, aiding their wellbeing while walking during work activities. The IRWIN WeldTec Circular Saw Blade also has an Alternate Top Bevel (ATB) tooth grind making it perfect for cross cutting and ripping in all woods, while innovative heat vents and expansion slots will help with chip ejection and keep the blade cool to guard against warping and resulting in straighter cuts. The fully hardened plate also runs truer for longer with more accuracy, making it a substantial and reliable choice for handheld users. Plus, a reinforced shoulder also adds to its durability.

Up until June 30th and from participating stockists, end-users can be in with a chance of winning IRWIN® Impact Double-Ended Power Bits or a DO MORE experience including stunt driving, hot air ballooning, rock climbing and much more. I enquiry 524

On site injuries are bringing about Smarter Workwear David Clark, managing director of the Hultafors Group UK, which owns Snickers Workwear, looks at how health and safety issues on site are influencing the development of ‘smarter’ working clothes and heralding a revolution in wearable technology Even though modern working clothes were invented back in the 1970’s by a Swedish electrician called Matti Viio, the most significant technical development in workwear before that was way back in the 1850’s. Jacob Davis, a Latvian Jewish immigrant living in San Francisco started buying bolts of denim cloth from Levi Strauss to reinforce and repair denim clothing. After one of Davis' customers kept purchasing cloth to reinforce torn trousers, he had an idea to use copper rivets to reinforce the points of strain on trousers, such as on the pocket corners and at the base of the button fly, he and Strauss went into business with a patented rivet design that is now part of clothing history. It was a significant development in clothing design at the time – a product development that was influenced by functionality and durability needs of their customers. 160 years on, workwear design and development is still being driven by the needs for functionality, durability and comfort, but perhaps more so now by the demands of health and safety on site. Do workers care about their own wellbeing at work? Our working lives are governed by occupational health and safety legislation, but while such laws act as a framework for ensuring employees wellbeing at work, it’s often the workers themselves who tend not to take enough care of their health on site. Workplace injuries are commonplace. But while employers have an obligation to ensure health and safety at work, some responsibility for overcoming occupational injuries does require a change in the behavior among workers themselves. They ought to be more attentive and perhaps prioritise their own health and personal safety on site.

A recent survey among professional craftsmen in Scandinavia* reveals that 6 out of 10 suffered an injury at their workplace in the past year. So 60% have or are are suffering from physical health issues or pain as a result. However, the same survey shows that more than one in two workers agree that personal protection equipment is not used on site as often as it should be. Surprisingly, given that most of the respondents work in environments where they are exposed to loud noise and dust as well as doing heavy lifting and a lot of kneeling, the use of PPE such as face masks,

kneepads, protective goggles, helmets and ear defenders are disregarded the most. Aside from the immediate effect of an injury at work, the most common ongoing pain a worker suffers is in the knees and back. Yet over a third of the respondents in the survey never change their Kneepads! Personal attitudes in the workplace are principal drivers why available protective equipment is not used, with many crasftsmen saying that laziness is one of the reasons behind the lack of personal protection. They say that time constraints and efficiency demands often underly such carelessness with half of the people interviewed in the survey believing that too much protective equipment impedes them in their work. Yet the survey also reveals that more than one in five workers in Scandinavia say that their employer does not always provide them with the equipment and work clothing they need. What’s more 4 out of 10 believe that the employer does not always support them with information or procedures concerning the protection or the right workwear to use – an issue that’s particularly prevalent in smaller companies with 4-10 employees. In Scandinavia the number of occupational

diseases and work accidents among manual workers is in decline with far fewer accidents than the European average. Despite this, much work remains for creating good conditions and a safer work environment for every single craftsman and woman. As product developers, workers, legislators and employers – we have a collective responsibility. At the Hultafors Group, we are keen to increase awareness about the most effective way of avoiding health issues and injuries at work – but also to develop and deliver products that work with the user to do more in looking after their wellbeing on site. Given that the majority of respondents in the Scandinavian survey are in favour of new, smart protection solutions, ‘Wearable Technology’ in workwear is the next logical step in the evolution of working clothes for professional craftsmen and women. The Wearable Technology Revolution David Clark talks about the ‘Smarter Workwear ‘initiative at Snickers : “Snickers Workwear has always been renowned for its modern designs, innovative functionality and market-leading fabric technology. Now our WorkTrousers are getting even ‘smarter’ with the integration of technology to improve performance and wellbeing at work”. “Wearable Technology is already woven into our daily lives through smartphones, fitness devices, sports clothing and accessories - to help

monitor and improve performance”. “While the recent survey was carried out among professional craftsmen in Scandinavia, many of the findings are equally applicable to the UK. It confirms what most of us have long suspected - that craftsmen are usually so focused on getting the job done that personal protection tends to be overlooked”. “But repeated ‘corner cutting’ over the years definitely creates a long-term health problem – an issue that Snickers Workwear has been continually addressing with its patented KneeGuard System. So the development of our ‘Smart Workwear’ is one way is one way of improving their wellbeing beyond just knee protection”. ‘Tracker 1’ is Snickers’ first prototype of wearable technology, a chip fitted to a pair of WorkTrousers enabling the user to monitor work place noise levels, heat conditions and knee impact. “Market-leading technology and innovation have long been hallmarks of Snickers Workwear. We are well known for our KneeGuard System, 37.5 Fabric Technology and technical functionality, but the integration of ‘smart’ wearable technology into our clothing shows the extent to which we are looking at working clothes and wellbeing on site in a completely new way”.

Wrightstyle shops for more than a Lidl

Wrightstyle, the advanced glazing system supplier, has won a third contract for national retailer Lidl. The new outlet in Llandaff North, Cardiff, has been designed as a “bespoke” store as it had to meet specific architectural demands. Devizes-based Wrightstyle is supplying a number of internal screens and doors to Prestige Windows of Bristol for the 1,345 sq metre store, all fire-rated to 30 minutes

Optima opens doors at the FIT SHOW B34 Following the spectacular success of the launch of Profile 22’s ground-breaking Optima system the company sets up shop at this years FIT Show with some exciting new developments that keep the buzz going, further enhancing Optima as the UK’s most comprehensive new window and door system. Profile 22 has recognized the increasing trend towards high specification composite doors and will be showcasing a range of timber core composite doors from sister company, Safedoors, that have been developed to blend in and work perfectly with the full Optima suite. Available in a wide range of unique styles and colour options, these doors will be available to buy as door leafs or fully finished doorsets. integrity and insulation. Previously, the company has supplied to Lidl in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, part of the supermarket’s aim of improving daylighting and reduce carbon emissions. Wrightstyle’s range of internal and external glazing systems combine fire resistance for up to 120 minutes with high optical quality, allowing for ambient lighting and solar control. The company can design, fabricate and install in the UK, and supplies its systems internationally. In a retail context, Wrightstyle systems have recently been installed in Hong Kong and Beirut. “Advanced glazing systems incorporate the innate aesthetics of glass with very high levels of security,” said Denis Wright, Chairman and CEO of Wrightstyle. “That combination also allows architects to better design smart buildings where, for example, heating costs can be minimised and carbon emissions reduced,” he said. For the house building sector a range of 2-part cills will be available that allow cills to be retrofitted upon completion of the building, thus saving costly replacement of components damaged during construction. The product improvements supplement the main talking point for Profile 22 at the FIT Show, the introduction of the Profile 22 Excellence as Standard Installer Support Scheme.

Unless you are directly involved in the window and door industry, the 200+ stand exhibition taking place at the NEC next month might just have passed you by. It shouldn’t be missed…

Whilst ‘the FIT Show’ is now a household name amongst window and door manufacturers and installers, especially in the home improvement sector, the acronym ‘FIT’ does not ring bells for everyone. And yet behind the ‘Fabricator Installer Trade Show’ lies the most powerful buying tool available in the UK for commercial buyers and specifiers of residential windows and doors. Launched to great acclaim in 2013, after three outings at the International Centre, Telford the FIT Show burst its seams and makes its first appearance at the NEC. And what an impressive NEC debut it is too, with more than 200 exhibitors occupying three large halls. It will be one hell of an entrance. From its roots deep in the burgeoning home improvement sector the event now provides a superb opportunity for specification and procurement professionals from all sectors and to ignore it is to deny the advantage of having so many specialist suppliers all in the same place at the same time; a couple of days spent here will save days and even weeks over the next few months. A look at the current exhibitor list ( will more than justify the decision to attend, with more exhibitors signing up daily. There is a huge choice across all product types but the one category that has, until now, been underserved is aluminium. For 2017 the sector has awakened to the FIT Show, perhaps because of its move to the NEC and noting the massive 50% increase in visitor numbers at last year’s show. This year more than 30% of exhibitors are showing aluminium products and systems, with ground-up brand new window systems in aluminium being shown for the first time anywhere.

added. At least two brand new aluminium window systems will be launched at the FIT Show for that reason. Aluminium will be shoulder-to-shoulder with the majority of the UK’s major window and door brands and producers to make this not only the biggest window and door event but also the most comprehensive and diverse.

The use of aluminium as a building material continues to grow whilst for homeowners it has represented only minority interest as a window framing material. However, the tide is turning. The rise in interest in aluminium appears to be led by the continuing interest in bi-folding doors, which are predominantly produced using aluminium. Hugh Moss, Head of Marketing for leading international aluminium systems producer Reynaers and formally with Everest Home Improvements, explained: “We are looking at the start of a boom in aluminium sales, and the next few years will see significant growth in sales of aluminium windows and doors and there are a number of reasons for this. As consumers are choosing aluminium sliding doors and bifold doors, they often choose aluminium windows to match.

The surge in commitment to the show from the aluminum sector has undoubtedly contributed to building what is already the biggest professional window and door event for 15 years and probably longer and, as the FIT Show’s Paul Godwin points out, a lot has happened to windows and doors in that time: “The fact is that there has not been such a comprehensive focus on windows and doors at any major UK event for at least a decade before the FIT Show was launched four years ago and certainly not for specification and procurement professionals, for whom such products may just be a part of their responsibility. “In that time the changes in regulations and therefore in the performance of windows and doors has been immense and anyone visiting this year’s FIT Show will see an enormous change in the products available,” added Paul. “There has been tremendous growth in ‘heritage’ window styles for example including vertical sliding sash frames and flush window styles. “This year the FIT Show is more than 60% bigger than last, with more than 200 exhibitors in three halls at the NEC. With confidence I can recommend this to professionals whose responsibilities include the specification and purchase of windows and doors for residential applications in all sectors.”

A look at the current exhibitor list ( will more than justify the decision to attend, with more exhibitors signing for the last few available stands on a daily basis. The move by the event to the NEC was largely due to expansion: the previous venue simply could not offer the room the FIT Show needed. The superb communications offered by the NEC cannot be ignored however. Comfortably the UK’s leading exhibition venue it is accessed easily by road, rail and even air and is served by thousands of car parking spaces and hotel rooms.

“Once they have looked closely at the appearance and performance of their new bi folding doors they look more closely at aluminium as a framing material for their windows and discover more benefits,” added Hugh. “For example demand for coloured uPVC profiles has seen an increase recently – driven by the uPVC systems houses pushing coloured foils; aluminium can be offered in literally hundreds of different coloured finishes. Also, there is a trend for narrow frames that maximise the glass area. Consumers want to look through their windows and not at them. The inherent strength in aluminium means that frames can be significantly slimmer than with other materials.” One observer reflected that the surge in interest in residential aluminum windows and doors is highlighted by the fact that window frames manufactured in aluminium have not been seen in volume at any professional fenestration exhibition in the UK for more than 30 years. The significance of the presence at the FIT Show of aluminium frame producers, backed by their professional body the Council for Aluminum in Buildings, cannot be overstated. This rise in interest is spreading to other housing sectors, with New Build especially having to take notice as trend conscious buyers looking for windows that match the bi folding and sliding doors that the developer has thoughtfully

Expecting a further surge in attendance the organisers recommend registering in advance to avoid queues. Registration for fast-track entry is available here: I enquiry 529

TORMAX automatic doors deliver outstanding reliability even under nearconstant use, which is why they were specified to work with Essential Aluminium Ltd, to supply and install the entrance to the new Pure Gym in Ipswich, which is open to members 24/7. Consisting of two sets of folding door leaves, the contemporary black, TORMAX automatic TOP Foldor system opens smoothly from the centre, quickly and silently, every time.

The TORMAX TOP Foldor is a complete, pre-fabricated door system for opening widths between 80-140 cm. With its elegant folding principle, the Foldor is a real spacesaving automatic door; an ideal application if dimensions of depth and width are minimal. Elegant door profiles optimise sealing and thanks to a well-designed solution, installation time is reduced to a minimum. An intelligent processor control simplifies commissioning and automatically maximise motion performance.

As with the complete range of TORMAX entrances, the FOLDOR is fitted with both vertical and horizontal threshold sensors, as well as a sensitive auto-reverse feature, which comes into operation when any obstacle is encountered during opening or closing. With some visitors to the gym being less-able or requiring wheel chair access, it was essential that the facility was fully DDAcompliant. The TORMAX entrance system ensures all users can easily access the facility, contributing to a positive and welcoming environment for everyone.

Genesis Vertical Sliding Window - a window of pure perfection The Genesis VS fully mechanical concept was conceived to meet the needs of the largely untouched heritage market previously dominated by timber windows. The success since it was first introduced has shown the building industry that the Genesis concept and attention to detail has become the benchmark. One of the biggest changes in the VS market is the growing acceptance of PVC-u for use in conservation areas and in some cases Grade II listed properties. The level of acceptance Genesis has achieved amongst planning officers is hardly surprising because the first thing that strikes you is just how authentic it looks – an area where the Genesis VS has blazed a trail as a true alternative to timber. The Genesis VS window is also attracting more and more attention in the new build, self-build and general retail markets for use in modern and contemporary homes too.

A Premium finish, at a sensible price

Polyx Oil from Osmo UK is a premium wood finish guaranteed to keep wooden surfaces in top condition. Ideal for solid engineered or laminate wood floors, it is a high quality, waterrepellent and tread-resistant wood finish based on natural ingredients. Available in a matt, clear and satin-matt finishes, the Polyx Oil range offers the highest coverage of any oil on the market - a 2.5 litre can cover approximately 30m² with two coats. Polyx Oil is also extremely easy to apply. Simply brush on to the wood surface to achieve deep, long-lasting penetration.

April 2017

Another key benefit of this wax-oil is that Polyx Oil has a reduced solvent content. Therefore it is virtually odorless, making Polyx Oil a much healthier (and also more pleasant) wood care product to use. And for anyone suffering from asthma or other breathing problems, an odourless waxoil is much preferred that conventional, solventbased oil or wax finishes. It also contains no biocides or preservatives. Ideal Wood Treatment: Offering all the professional features of a traditional oil-based finish, Polyx Oil combines the smooth surface of conventional lacquers, and the ease of application of a water-based finish, while managing to eliminate the inherent disadvantages of these other types of finish. Unlike ordinary oil finish products which form a film on the wood, Polyx Oil’s natural components penetrate deeply into the wood to create a micro-porous finish. This allows the wood to breathe, moisture to evaporate and ensures a flawless finish both upon application and for many years to come. I enquiry 135

The Dryonic paint was chosen to refurbish Newburn House on the Newburn Business Park, on the basis of its’ advanced ‘stay clean’ performance, ensuring that the building will retain its attractive new appearance well into the future. “The building façades had become stained and unsightly and a reliable solution was needed,” explains Sto’s Technical Consultant, Jim Allan. “Although other options were considered, it emerged that using a combination of StoPrim Fungal disinfectant and StoColor Dryonic façade paint would provide the guarantee of longevity and protection against algae and fungi growth that was required.” StoColor Dryonic paint was inspired by special micro-textures found on the shell of the fog-basking beetle. Just like the beetle’s shell, the paint uses a special composition of binding agents and filler material to create micro-textures that both repel water and channel it away at the same time.

AKZO NOBEL April 2017

A coating for all seasons With over 2300 garden centres and retail nurseries in the UK and spending on garden-related items topping-out at a whopping £5bn per annum, it’s no surprise that capital items like sheds, decking and fencing amount for a large portion of that outlay.

enables them to supply a consistent, quality product to the end user. It’s an area where AkzoNobel can make a positive difference. The end/user need not lose out though, as AkzoNobel through their vast distribution system can supply a limited amount of product to this niche market. Carl Circus,

This Spring is set to see more convenience gardening and low maintenance options as people adapt to smaller living spaces, as a direct effect of the current global and seasonal weather patterns. Despite years of rain-soaked summers, we still believe that we have the ideal climate for outdoor living. We also like the low maintenance of it all. There is no time any more for weeding or mowing the lawn. If it doesn’t move...cover it in wood!

UK Distribution Manager, AkzoNobel Wood Coatings said, “our Sikkens CETOL® WF 771 is the ideal product for use on fencing, sheds and decking this Spring. It’s technical qualities, ease of application, colour vibrancy and troublefree maintenance make it a perfect choice for a huge selection of applications where either UV light and moisture are an issue.”

Garden buildings, decking and fencing are becoming increasingly popular as we’re using the garden more and more as a living space. The extra shelter from sheds can double up as a spare room, mini-workplace or entertainment area when the weather is playing up. And of course, the decking provides the extra floor space bereft of weeds and the like. Just like the wooden fences that surround these wooden structures they all need to be prepared and protected properly to keep them in optimum condition right throughout the year. At Blackburn-based coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel they know that supplying the highest quality products to protect these wooden assemblies in situ is key to safeguarding their longevity and make them look stunning all year round. Fence, shed and decking manufacturers/suppliers know that having a reliable source of suitable coatings through a dependable and direct network

With Sikkens CETOL® WF 771, Sikkens Wood Coatings provide a special one-pot coating product which is highly protective against the damaging effects of UV light and moisture. Its transparent film deluges and fills the pores in the wood with the Saturator-Effekt® and therefore increases its durability. Flaking of the coating does not occur. The Self Stratifying© binder used in CETOL® WF 771 is modularly based: The first component ensures good adhesion to the substrate; the second component offers very good protection against UV light and moisture.

As well as being perfect for application by brush for the DIY market Sikkens CETOL® WF 771 is used for application in a factory environment by trade coaters, for example. In terms of meeting the needs of commercial cladding coaters, Sikkens CETOL® WF 771 provides a perfect coating solution, whether it is applied by vacuum coater, brush coater or automated spray lines... a real boon at the early stages of construction affording the manufacturer more quality control. Carl Circus added, “we can supply a regular volume of our products directly to the fence, shed and decking manufacturers. It’s all about a reliable flow of service and delivery of product. On time, every time.” This May will present a perfect opportunity to see the Sikkens CETOL® WF 771 highly protective coatings system at the forthcoming LIGNA show. The world’s leading trade fair for machinery, plant and tools for the woodworking and timber processing industry in Hanover is gearing up for its 2017 season with a new, more visitor-centric layout of themes. It promises to deliver an incredible array of products and services aimed at providing the very latest technologies and innovations. It’s an arena of excellence where AkzoNobel are relishing the opportunity to showcase several products from their high- quality range of coatings.

This low build, low sheen translucent system is especially suitable for medium to highly exposed wood surfaces such as outdoor decks, garden furniture, roof soffits and cladding. The ‘Never Ending Impressions’ colour collection, designed especially for CETOL® WF 771 offers a wide spectrum of intensive colours and harmoniously balanced colour tones.

Polyseam, a British manufacturer of sealants, adhesives, fillers and coatings has shown significant growth in a period where many other companies are maintaining their position. In 2016 business increased by 29%, and at the end of the 1st quarter in 2017 are up 90% on 2016. This growth has happened during a period of upheaval, as they prepare to move from their factory on Silver Street Huddersfield where they have been for over 20 years, to our new premises on St Andrews Road Huddersfield.

the growth of a manufacturer

The new site sits tall on 5000 sq. m premises and when completed will include spacious offices, research and development facilities, engineering facilities, a planning department, storehouse and three large manufacturing units. Permanent staff level has also increased by 10% since the start of the new factory development project. This will increase by a further 15% when the move is completed as they convert temporary jobs to permanent.

Planning permission was granted on March 24th 2017 for an additional 2700 sq. m as the Kirklees Council continues to show their support for Polyseam’s development project. Three and a half years ago export made up 20% of sales, in 2017 it is now at 80%. This growth is as a result of Polyseam revising their business model about four and a half years ago and aligning it to where they envisaged the growth of the business was going to come from. It was obvious that it would be export markets and they put a lot of effort into that with their fire protection products and general sealants and adhesives for the construction and DIY markets. Polyseam now export to over 40 countries globally including India, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates. The export market is being driven by a demand for quality, and that is what Polyseam continues to deliver with their products.

Kemper System takes centre stage at Greenwich Theatre

The installation team at Capitol Roofing Co Ltd completed the refurbishment of the Greenwich Theatre roof on time, to budget and specification.

When the roof of a popular London theatre was no longer watertight, cold-applied liquid waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, provided the ideal solution.

“The fact that the waterproofing solution is eco-friendly as well as odourless was an added bonus for the client, as work was able to be carried out whilst the building was still occupied. The theatre could carry on as normal with minimal waste removal or nuisance odours to disrupt employees or guests to the theatre, and without the fire risk of hot works. “With a BBA accredited 25-year service life, Kemperol 2K-PUR provided the ideal solution for the Greenwich Theatre refurbishment.”

Roofing contractors, Capitol Roofing Co Ltd of Blackheath in Greenwich, specified Kemperol 2K-PUR to refurbish the existing 500 sq. m asphalt roof at the

April 2017

Greenwich Theatre, south-east London, to stop water ingress into the four-storey building.

Thanks to its solvent-free and odourless qualities, Kemperol 2K-PUR was an obvious choice for refurbishment works on the occupied building. In addition, its quick installation benefits meant Capital Roofing Co Ltd, were able to meet their tight project deadline, and the works on the theatre were completed in time for the start of the festive show season. Once Capital Roofing Co Ltd carried out extensive repairs and cleaned the surface they primed the existing roof surface then applied the Kemperol 2K-PUR resin in a single wet-on-wet process. The cold-applied resin was rolled onto the roof with a reinforcement fleece laid directly in to the wet resin, immediately followed by more resin to ensure complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece. Once cured, the resin formed a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate, is UV stable and bonds directly to the substrate. Because the Kemperol 2K-PUR system is ideal for complex detailing, this meant a new, up-and-over staircase was able to be installed whilst still providing a seamless liquid waterproofing solution. A Kemperdur antislip walkway for safe maintenance traffic was added to complete the waterproofing works.

Chris Shulver at Capitol Roofing Co Ltd, said: “The existing roof at the theatre was failing resulting in water leaking through onto the seats inside. We had some very tight deadlines to adhere to, which is why we choose Kemperol 2K-PUR because of its quick and easy installation system.

Greenwich Theatre is a popular, local playhouse located in Croom's Hill, close to the centre of Greenwich in southeast London. The theatre first came to Greenwich at the beginning of the 19th century during the famous Eastertide Greenwich Fair at which the Richardson travelling theatre annually performed. Since then, it has seen the likes of Mia Farrow, Charles Dance and Susannah York perform.

SIG Roofing is announced as headline sponsor of UK Roofing Awards

The National Federation of Roofing Contractors - the UK’s largest roofing trade association (NFRC) - is pleased to announce SIG Roofing as headline sponsor for this year’s prestigious UK Roofing Awards. James Talman, Chief Executive at NFRC said: “As hosts of the Awards, we are delighted and excited to once again welcome SIG Roofing as our headline sponsor. This event is the highlight of the roofing industry calendar, and as always, its aim is to recognise and reward outstanding standards of workmanship, technical excellence and safety

across all aspects of roofing. SIG Roofing has been supporting the Awards for the last 10 years, and combined with their commitment to best roofing practice, they make the ideal sponsor.” James added: “This year’s Awards take on even greater meaning as they coincide with NFRC’s 125th anniversary - an amazing milestone for any organisation, but even more significant for a Federation that relies solely on membership support.” Commenting on this exciting sponsorship announcement, Andrew Wakelin, Managing Director at SIG Roofing, said: “We are passionate about supporting the roofing industry and the desire to drive innovation and quality workmanship is at the very heart of our business. That’s why we are so committed to the work that the NFRC is doing with The UK Roofing Awards, and we are proud to once again be the headline sponsor.”

Roofing Contractor keeping quiet about the advantages of Magply

A Colchester based roofing contractor has been using Magply Recovery boards as part of a high specification build up, which provided its operatives with a relatively quiet as well as safe means of carrying out reroofing works to school classrooms during lesson times. While much maintenance work around school and college campuses has to be scheduled for the long summer holidays, the pressure this puts on the re-roofing works means some operations have to carry on during term time, as long as noise and disruption are kept to an absolute minimum. As a result, instead of scabbling smooth the old covering of asphalt and chippings on the Bishops Stortford buildings, RT Roofing proposed to simply sweep away any loose material and then begin the over-roofing with a layer of 6mm thick Magply, bonded down in hot bitumen. This then offered a sound flat surface on which to install a Langley built-up felt system. I enquiry 144

Organowood® makes timber cladding sustainable

NFRC launches strategy to support UK roofing skills post Brexit The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) - the UK’s largest roofing trade association - has unveiled an ambitious four-year Workforce Development Strategy that is designed to elevate standards and ignite growth across the roofing sector. Seeking to attract full government and private sector backing, support and engagement, the new strategy will ultimately open doors to new jobs, higher standards, and help reach UK Construction targets. This landmark development is the result of an independent and extensive research project undertaken by Skyblue Research on behalf of NFRC, the Roofing Industry Alliance and funded by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). The research set out to identify the key challenges facing the roofing sector and after engaging with a cross-sector group of 141 UK-based roofing contractors, it concluded that a revival in the roofing sector could be kick-started by satisfying three key objectives. These objectives form the cornerstone of the Workforce Development Strategy.

GREY is the new white! There is an undeniable trend within the housebuilding market from white towards colour when choosing replacement windows, doors and roofline products. Grey is rapidly becoming the new white! At Freefoam we are seeing these market forces converting into sales and have seen a significant increase in orders for Anthracite Grey fascia and soffit during the last year. Architects, specifiers, builders and developers can now create a fully coordinated roofline for their clients by offering Freefoam’s new Anthracite Gutter. Introduced last year, the Anthracite Grey rainwater range is an exact match (RAL No.7016) to the already popular fascia and soffit products and coordinates with many popular shades of window frames and door finishes. With a 77mm depth and a 116mm width, the Deep gutter is designed to manage the increasing levels of rainfall that are being experienced throughout the UK. Available with the full range of matching fittings including Union Brackets, Running Outlets and Hoppers, and manufactured using co-extruded PVC-U, the Freefoam Freeflow range offers a long lasting, leak free, no fade, low maintenance solution all with a ten year guarantee. Co-extruded to reduce leaks Like the existing Freeflow rainwater system, Freefoam manufacture Anthracite Grey products using the co-extrusion method to create a white interior and darker exterior colours. This is Freefoam’s innovative solution to the problems associated with rapid heat absorption and expansion of dark coloured gutters, which can cause leaks and noise when they cool down. A white interior reduces heat absorption and subsequent expansion along the width and length, dramatically decreasing the probability of leaks.

Colour stability built in Freefoam is the colour specialist. The new Anthracite Grey rainwater range is manufactured using Freefoam’s patented ColormaxTM technology - an advanced master-batching process with a blend of natural PVC and pigments that are simultaneously co-extruded to produce built in colourfastness, colour variety, and reliable colour matching, all with a ten-year guarantee. Colin St John, UK General Manager commented “The Anthracite Grey rainwater range offers architects, specifiers, builders, developers and home improvement companies the opportunity to create a perfectly coordinated roofline. We have established ourselves as leaders in the manufacture of colour PVC building products and this option is another example of how Freefoam are producing products that allow customers to meet the growing market place demands for colour.”

The roof refurbishment of Kirkgate Market in Leeds is a story of problem solving and partnership. Rising to the challenge, Protech Roofing and Sarnafil Plus delivered an exemplary solution, which allowed the market to remain open throughout. Europe’s largest covered market, Kirkgate has 800 stalls attracting over 100,000 visitors a week. As part of a £14m refurbishment to improve the market for the stallholders and the public, the leaking roof, extending over both the 1976 and 1981 halls, needed renewing while the building was fully operational. Being such an important and iconic city landmark, viewable from many of the surrounding buildings, attention to detail and aesthetics were also incredibly important to the final result. The Sarnafil Plus team did the groundwork to secure the tender with the architect, asserting the benefits of a Sarnafil system, Sarnafil Plus technical support and guarantee. Following this, Protech Roofing, a registered Sarnafil contractor, spent many hours visiting the site and attending meetings, gaining the trust of all parties. Eamonn Cahill, Interserve senior project manager, said: “Protech showed outstanding levels of proactive problem solving and integrity throughout the project. The Sika Sarnafil membrane has given the market hall roofs a smart, clean finish with the durability to keep the building weatherproof for years to come.” The original design specification called for the existing felt waterproofing to be removed back to the metal decking.

However, this would cause massive disruption and with no guarantee of a watertight building. To combat this issue, Protech recommended a mechanically fastened Sarnafil system that could be overlayed onto the existing substrate.

Six rooflights over 51m long were replaced with SarnaLites, situated close together in rows, making sure that the market continued to benefit from natural daylight. This part of

A full Sarnafil Plus survey and moisture mapping revealed the worst areas for water ingress before the project started to assist with planning the work. The nine-month project saw a team of between eight and 10 people working on the roof through all four seasons, including rain showers and temperatures of over 27°C., without the project or waterproofing ever being compromised. Sarnavap 5000E SA a cold applied, self-adhesive vapour control layer was used to ensure temporary waterproofing for the market while the roofing work was being carried out. The SarnaTherm insulation boards were mechanically fixed into the existing roof and installation of Sarnafil S327-15EL Light Grey membrane with stainless steel fixings created a durable, weathertight and aesthetically pleasing finish. Sarnafil membranes are certified by the British Board of Agrement to have a service life in excess of 40 years, giving the client confidence in the durability and longevity of the roof. A further feature of Sarnafil roofing systems that appealed to the client was that the Sarnafil S327-15EL Light Grey membrane is cold applied – welded together using hot air rather than with a naked flame. The system can be used without restrictions as it meets the fire performance requirements of BS476-Part 3:2004 and BS EN 13501-5:2005. This was an important safety consideration as the market had suffered a terrible fire back in 1975.

the refurbishment was carried out at night to limit any disruption to the market below. Sarnafil Plus visited the site regularly and a successful final inspection resulting in the issuing of a Sarnafil Plus guarantee.

Immersive Igloo transforms sewer training - but without the smell

Drainage engineers in London and the Thames Valley are being sent into an Igloo before they can go down a sewer. Lanes Utilities and Thames Water have invested in a 360° igloo projection theatre that will transform training by allowing teams to instantly see and hear what it is like to be inside a sewer, though not experience the smell. The igloo, based at Lanes' Customer Solutions Centre, in Slough, Berks, delivers wraparound sound and vision, so drainage engineers can be immersed in any scenario, no matter how potentially hazardous,

without having to leave the training room. Lanes Utilities, part of Lanes Group, the UK's largest drainage specialist, will use the Igloo theatre - or cylinder - to train teams working on its wastewater network maintenance contract for Thames Water. Lanes is the first water utilities contractor in the UK to use such a sophisticated facility to train its staff, in a move that is being co-funded by Thames Water Wastewater Networks. Lanes Utilities Director Andy Brierley said: "The Igloo acts like a giant virtual reality headset. Up to 15 people can receive sewer maintenance training that's as life-like as possible, without them getting their feet wet. "It will be particularly useful for when we are inducting our people. Keeping everyone safe is our number one priority, so we want our new colleagues to be fully-prepared. I enquiry 150

New clarity given for use of air admittance valves externally Drainage ventilation expert Studor has responded to market confusion about Air Admittance Valves (AAVs) and whether they can be used externally. “There does seem to be confusion in the market and we’re frequently asked whether AAVs are suitable for exterior use,” comments Studor’s Technical Director Steve White. “Both our own Studor Maxi-Vent, as well as the Wavin branded OsmaVent 110, can all be used externally. The latest BBA Agrément Certificates clarify this and specifically refer to their external use.” The BBA certificates verify that the AI rated valves perform in extreme temperatures, from -20°C to +60°C in accordance with EN12380. Introducing the METROPOLIS grating Ductile iron gratings on surface water drainage channels don’t necessarily need to be utilitarian in appearance with geometric slots or meshes. Inspired by the patterns made by water flowing down a stream, the surface design of the Hauraton METROPOLIS grating is reminiscent of the ART NOUVEAU style and later ART DECO period. Planners and

landscape architects can now choose this grating to add a touch of class to their schemes in historic and pre-modern townscapes or any surface drainage project where an aesthetic, more decretive look is desired. The METROPOLIS grating is sold separately to fit FASERFIX® KS channels or factory fitted to RECYFIX® PRO channels. N&C’s Radar lock and key can help to prevent incidents like recent story of Paraolympian, Anne Wafula Strike N&C Phlexicare are the inventors of the official Radar Lock and Key scheme, offering environments all over the country the chance to have disabled toilet facilities which are easy to install and easy to access for those that may need to. It has recently been brought to the nation’s attention that Paralympian, Anne Wafula Strike was left without any access to a disabled toilet during her train journey in December 2016, due to the train company not having accessible toilets at this given time. This incident is an example of why we need to ensure that all places have disabled facilities to prevent events like this happening. The concept behind the radar lock and key is to offer all less abled people independent access to locked public toilets around the country via the National Key Scheme (NKS) with their very own radar lock key. The idea of needing a key to use these toilets was put in place to ensure that they were not used inappropriately and were kept in a suitable state for users. The Radar lock has been tested to BSEN12209:2003, meets EN1670:2007 Grade 5 and satisfies the requirements set in the Equality Act 2010 (BSEN300:2009).

ALTRO’S first adhesive-free flooring fow low slip risk areas is tough time-saving solution at Warrington Hospital New Altro CantataTM, the company’s first adhesivefree flooring for areas with a low slip risk, is already demonstrating its capabilities at Warrington Hospital, providing a tough time and cost saving solution in a busy non-clinical corridor.

spaces where disruption needs to be minimal, such as hospitals, schools and general circulation areas, with the durability needed for medium to high traffic areas. Plus there are no associated adhesive odours. Altro Cantata’s 16 soft-look shades, which range from subtle naturals to beautifully vivid, allows you to create just the right colour scheme or tone.

cost saving, durability, looks and hygiene. This is vital at a time when the NHS is looking to make savings where possible, while also maintaining the highest standards. We are currently looking at using this product in another non-clinical area of the hospital, where there are similar issues with installation time. We think it will do a fantastic job there as well.”

Lee Bushell continues: “I must admit I was sceptical that Altro Cantata would be able to meet our needs, but I am very pleased that I have been proved wrong, and it has been perfect for us in so many ways.

Altro Cantata was installed at Warrington Hospital by Cheshire Contract Flooring Ltd. Director Dave Hunt says: “We specialise in installing flooring in healthcare environments, so we completely understand the pressures in terms of timing, cost and often sensitive environments.

“There was a very short window for installation, because the corridor is in use until 7pm, but the process went very smoothly and was completed in just one night. A flooring that needs adhesive would have taken 3 to 4 days to fit. Altro Cantata has delivered a massive saving in cost, and the corridor was back in full use the next morning. When speaking of the floor handling foot and wheeled traffic, Lee said: “It’s is standing up to the demands well with no signs of movement, bubbling or rippling, which proves it truly is a long term solution and not just a temporary fix. Very impressive.

Lee Bushell, the hospital’s Acting Head of Capital Projects, says: “The service corridor is an area that gets an enormous amount of traffic. It’s in constant use during the day. “After many years of this treatment, the existing vinyl flooring was really showing the strain. It looked tired, scruffy and we needed to find a hard wearing, affordable long term solution that could be laid with minimal disruption in this busy area. “We have a very good relationship with Altro, and their flooring is proving very successful elsewhere in the hospital, so we asked them to have a look at the corridor

and give us some guidance. They suggested we use their new Altro Cantata flooring, because it could be laid straight down onto the existing flooring, without adhesive, which would mean a fast installation. New Altro Cantata is a decorative, adhesivefree flooring that creates maximum impact with minimum downtime. Using Altro’s award-winning adhesive-free installation method, it can be welded and walked on the same day, and at the end of its life removed easily, allowing it to be reused or recycled. It can handle the traffic of busy areas and is a long-term solution that will look good for years to come. It is ideal for busy public

“In terms of aesthetics, the flooring looks superb. There are some great colour choices with Altro Cantata. We selected a pale ice blue, which perfectly matches the colour scheme of the corridor. Cleaning is proving to be a revelation. The black scuffs and wheel marks from the trolleys were always tough to remove on the old flooring. Initially our cleaning team was doubtful they could get the marks off the new flooring, and nervous of using the scrubber and buffer because they thought they might do some damage. But we are delighted to report that the flooring comes up like new after every nightly cleaning regime, and even the stubborn black wheel marks are gone. Scrubbing machines and buffers are doing a wonderful job, with no damage. “Sustainability is also an important factor for us. Because Altro Cantata is an adhesive-free flooring it means that in the future, if we need to make repairs, we can simply cut out a section and replace it, without having to re-lay the entire area. And the product is 100% recyclable as well. Overall, Altro Cantata is meeting all our needs in terms of

“The beauty of Altro Cantata is that it can be laid straight down on to the subfloor, or existing flooring, with minimal preparation. There is no need to grind the floor, or put down a DPM, or prime, screed or use adhesive. This is a massive time and cost saver, a real fast track solution. Plus there is no need to wait for adhesive to dry and cure, so the flooring can be used and walked on immediately. It’s an ideal product for busy areas with heavy traffic where quick installation is paramount.” Dave Hunt adds: “We laid the flooring in just one night, an area of 140m2, with two operatives. The process was quite straightforward. Firstly we made sure the existing flooring was clean, dry and dust free, then rolled out the sheet of product and cut it to size. Double-sided tape was then put around the perimeter, along the walls, one either side of the join. “The tape was then peeled back and the flooring laid down and pressed into place. We finished by hot welding the joints, putting in a sit-on skirting, and steel threshold strips in the doorway. It was so fast: we could not have completed the work in this short timeframe with a traditional vinyl flooring. “I was unsure that the flooring would stay in place with all the heavy trolleys turning on it every day, but it has been designed to do just that, and hasn't moved or buckled in the slightest. We are very impressed with Altro Cantata and we’ll certainly be recommending it for our future projects.” I enquiry 568
