SHOPPING

Cannery Row

Heading toward Cannery Row, the New Monterey area is jam-packed with inviting booksellers, consignment and sporting goods shops. Cannery Row itself, once the heart of Monterey’s canning industry, is now a bustling shopping district. There are more than 150 stores along the six-block stretch of the Row between Reeside and David Avenues. These shops sell local art, old-fashioned candy, specialty food items and wine. The Row certainly has come a long way from its fishy beginnings.

On the other side of Monterey, toward Highway 1, is Del Monte Center. With more than 85 shops, the center surrounds a beautiful garden and 04FSA0023 TwoTags-Monterey.qrk 9/23/04 11:37 AM picturesque walkways. Macy’s and Mervyn’s are anchor stores for this mall, while other temptations include Photo courtesy Kerrick James/MCCVB Banana Republic, Ann Taylor Loft, GAP, the Bombay Company, White House|Black Market, Chico’s, and Whole Foods Market. There also are restaurants aplenty, including P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, and California Pizza Kitchen leading the charge. At one end of the center, the 13-screen Century Cinemas movie complex offers digital sound and stadium seating—a perfect diversion to reward the kids after a patient afternoon of shopping.

I AM WORLDLY. I AM COSMOPOLITAN. I AM YOUR TRAVEL BAG, AND NO MATTER WHERE I GO, I’LL NEVER LEAVE YOUR SIDE. PLEASE DROP BY THE CONCIERGE CENTER FOR A TRAVELER'S INCENTIVE CARD.

Moss Landing Years ago, Moss Landing was once a major rail and shipping hub for whale oil, salt and produce. Today, this sleepy little hamlet appears to have more antiques than residents. Two exits directly off Highway 1 lead visitors to 24 shops specializing in antiques and collectibles. Among the specialty items: Depressionera glassware, silverware from the old Del Monte Hotel, jewelry, movie memorabilia, paintings, first-edition books and much more. On the last Sunday in July, the town transforms itself for the Moss Landing Antique Fair, when 200 vendors descend on the village with an incredible assortment of items. Enjoy some of the region’s best seafood at one of a handful of eateries—and watch local fisherman unload their catch while you wait!
