MONTEREY COUNTY Sand City

An artist’s enclave resides in Sand City

This small oceanfront community is in the midst of a renaissance. Over the past several years, Sand City has welcomed an influx of creative minds. A burgeoning artists’ colony has transformed warehouses left over from the city’s railroad days into studios and galleries. Several festivals, including the annual Artists Equity Open Studios Tour and the West End Celebration, showcase these studios and encourage visitors to drop by and meet the artists. Seaside The first town to the north of Monterey is the bustling city of Seaside. When coastal fog blankets the rest of the Monterey Peninsula, the sun is often still shining in Seaside. The city’s inland hills were home to the U.S. Army base of Fort Ord until the base closed in 1993. Today, outdoor enthusiasts rave about the miles of recreation trails that snake across the grounds of the former base, offering walking, hiking, and biking among the natural habitat – just minutes from the heart of the City.

“If you like to fly kites, Seaside Beach is the best for kite flying or even just watching.”

There are other parks, too. Laguna Grande Park hosts neighborhood picnics as well as vibrant music festivals every summer. Roberts Lake, a popular turnaround spot on the Recreation Trail, is a great place to catch glimpses of peregrine falcons and different species of waterfowl. Steady beachside sea breezes welcome kite-flying and hang-gliding. For those looking to explore the highways, the newly renovated Seaside Auto Center offers the largest selection of vehicles in the county. Flavorful dining opportunities also abound in this community that celebrates it diversity with authentic cuisine from around the world. The award-winning Bayonet & Black Horse golf courses boast panoramic views of the spectacular Monterey Bay. A Fairmont Resort Hotel soon will be constructed on this one-of-a-kind site to offer luxury accommodations as well as premier golfing. A slew of new upscale retail developments, luxury accommodations and multimillion dollar renovations will also debut in the next few years.

Seaside also is home to California State University-Monterey Bay, the Leon and Sylvia Panetta Institute, and the Monterey College of Law, making it an important part of the Monterey Peninsula’s world-renowned educational community.
