Independent Sightseeing Ideas Everybody loves exploring a new area, and the beaches and redwoods of Monterey County are simply begging to be explored. Here are our suggestions for one-, two- and three-day itineraries in the area:

Three Days

One Day

Two Days

After breakfast in downtown Monterey, head toward Cannery Row. Next, check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium. From there, walk (or bike, or rollerskate, or surrey) to Fisherman’s Wharf. The Wharf is a starting point for Old Monterey’s Path of History, a selfguided walking tour that rambles past the Custom House, Colton Hall, Pacific House, Casa Serrano and the lovely Casa Soberanes. For those who prefer to drive, pile in the car and head south toward Carmel to cruise 17-Mile Drive, or go inland and visit the National Steinbeck Center.

Spend the first morning on Cannery Row, visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium and learning about the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Next, spend the afternoon out whale watching or walk the Path of History through Old Monterey. On Day No. 2, explore Carmel Valley. This Free MST Trolley is the sunniest part of the coast, highly regarded for its sunsoaked golf courses, horseback riding, hiking trails and wineries. From here, it’s a quick shot to the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas.

Start your stay at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and follow it up with an afternoon in Old Monterey. On Day No. 2, take the coast road to 17-Mile Drive and Pebble Beach, passing Seal Rock and Pebble Beach Lodge. Explore Carmel, poking into art galleries, antique shops and boutiques. Leave Carmel by way of Mission San Carlos Borromeo, the third of the missions founded in the 1770s. In the afternoon, roam Big Sur via Highway 1, pausing to hike or ride by horseback beside the Pacific Ocean. On Day No. 3, relax. Play a round of golf or try a body wrap at one of the region’s elegant spas. Spend the afternoon wine-tasting in Carmel Valley Village. Cap your roaringly good visit with a trip to Wild Things animal training ranch to meet Josef the Lion, the model for Disney’s The Lion King.
