Highway Bridges on New Alignment

Designing large, complex structures as part of major transportation projects is our specialty. From planning and environmental studies to final design, our in-house expertise allows for expediting the design and coordination process.


S.R. 6220, Section A12 State College, Centre County, PA The 7.2-mile portion of US 220 (Corridor I-99) to the Mt. Nittany Expressway included the design of dual six-span bridges and 80-foot high piers.


Highway Bridges on New Alignment

Route 33 Freeway Extension Monmouth County, NJ

This “missing link� included five new multigirder bridges spanning NJTransit tracks, ramps, local roadways, wetlands, and waterways where endangered species were avoided through extensive in-house environmental coordination.

Warren Street Corridor Extension S.R. 222, Section 001 Berks County, PA The design included five bridges and five culverts along the three-mile stretch of US Route 222 connecting Reading and Lancaster. One of the new bridges included weep holes specially designed to enhance an existing bog turtle habitat with spring water.

Park Road Corridor Extension S.R. 3040, Section 002 Berks County, PA Public involvement established local consensus on design improvements including eight highway and railroad multi-span structures and one culvert.


Rehabilitation, Replacement & Retrofit

Finding swift resolutions to right-of-way issues, environmental approval, permitting, and public concerns is one of the ways we can streamline a traditional “3R� project. Revitalizing a bridge in less time for less money is our primary goal.


Gordon Street Rehabilitation Union County, NJ

This fast-tracked historic metal truss renovation for a busy connector between two New Jersey boroughs included a complete deck replacement along with strength and safety upgrades.


Rehabilitation, Replacement & Retrofit

Mainline Total Reconstruction MP 85-94 Westmoreland County, PA

Bridge reconstruction required multiple traffic staging and detours during construction along the PA Turnpike.


Route 46 over Overpeck Creek Hyperbuild Initiative Bergen County, NJ This project was one of the first designed to utilize NJDOT’s Hyperdesign/Hyperbuild initiative, saving approximately $3 million and reducing construction time by approximately two years.

County Bridge  No. 253 Saint Malachi Road over Doe Run Chester County, PA

Administration and management of Chester and Delaware Counties’ bridge programs involve biennial bridge inspections, design, and project management of all county-owned bridge structures.


Aesthetic Treatments

As problem solvers and community advocates, our designs carefully reflect the context of the surrounding environment, the look envisioned by the public, and the needs of our clients.


Blue Ball Properties Improvement Project New Castle County, DE Architectural treatments applied to this 62-foot single-span bridge include the use of haunched prestressed concrete adjacent box beams to mimic a rigid frame. A total of three bridges and five culverts were designed for this transportation and recreational improvement project along US 202, just north of Wilmington.


Aesthetic Treatments

London Tract Road Bridge Replacement Chester County, PA

Historic one-lane pony truss on Pennsylvania state park property was replaced with a concrete spread box beam in coordination with state and federal environmental agencies.


County Bridge No. 203 over French Creek Chester County, PA Protected under Pennsylvania’s Scenic Rivers Act, the design incorporated aesthetic treatments including reuse of stone from the original bridge.

Gibson’s Covered Bridge Chester County, PA After a full bridge rehabilitation, interior lighting treatments were installed to provide safer nighttime visibility and protection from vandalism for one of Chester County’s treasured historic resources.

Blue Ball Properties Improvement Project New Castle County, DE

Aesthetic treatments for bridges, retaining walls, and culverts include indigenous natural stone facing to blend into park landscaping.


Specialty Structures

Bridges with special technical challenges require creative engineering solutions. Precast superstructure units, segmental piers, and curved girders are examples of the creativity we use to address specific design challenges. Our engineers also work hand in hand with our graphic designers to develop photo-realistic renderings to help the public visualize the final product.


Chester City Access Improvements Delaware County, PA

Shown in this rendering, the design of new 60-foot high curved girder ramps will be incorporated into the widening of the existing Commodore Barry Bridge approach spans.


Specialty Structures

Route 33 Freeway Extension Monmouth County, NJ

Kinked girders were used instead of curved girders for the bridge over Burkes Creek to simplify design and fabrication, reducing the cost.


Route 46 Hyperbuild Initiative Bergen County, NJ The existing deck and beams were replaced with prefabricated superstructure units, ultimately creating a new, modular superstructure to extend the life of the bridge another 50 years.

S.R. 6220, Section B12 State College Centre County, PA This two-span bridge on karstic bedrock was specially designed with foundation solutions using engineered fill and special pre-drilling techniques.
