Informer Issue #2 February 2013

MESSAGE AND UPDATE FROM PRESIDENT, DEAN LOEWEN By now you might have heard that MCABC is lacing up our sneakers, and stretching our legs, and gearing up for our Association’s “Run for Well-ness” at this year’s Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon & 5K on June 23rd, 2013. Thanks to the inspiration from our National chairman, Brad Diggens, our team is dedicated to raising money for Operation Eyesight - an international development organization focused on the elimination of blindness caused by unsanitary water reservoirs and poor living conditions in developing countries. With your help, MCABC has the possibility of raising $15,000 towards the construction of a new water well for a developing area in need. Get it? “WELL”-ness? Take part in MCABC’s Run for Well-ness and help us reach our $15,000 goal. As your president, I will be there in full running spirit, ready to conquer the half marathon! Some will choose to run, some will choose to walk, some will choose to wheel themselves to the finish line, but whatever you do, come to show your support in any way that you can. You do not need to be part of MCABC to participate, as we want everyone to join in. Bring your friends, bring your family, your colleagues, your neighbours, and anyone in your network! Can you think of a better physical and mental challenge or a better place to be with friends and family June? We want you to join our team to help us to make a difference…and to make getting/staying in shape a blast! Run details:

http://canadarunningseries.com/svhm/svhmDET.htm

Many people have said to me, “…but Dean, I’m not a runner!” Let me remind everyone that you don’t need to be a seasoned runner to participate. Anybody can learn to run! Have you heard of the “Couch to 5K”? http://www.c25k.com/ Everyone is welcome!

Informer Issue #2 February 2013 It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of one of our members Bill Kelly. William “Bill” Kelly, was born in Ireland August 14th, 1934, and passed away January 27th, 2013. Bill came to Canada in 1967 and worked as a plumber before starting his own company “Willmar” Plumbing in 1972. When his 3 sons began work with Willmar Plumbing, he renamed the company William Kelly & Sons Plumbing in 1984. He continued to work in Calgary, but due to the slow pace of Calgary’s construction industry at that time, Bill decided to move to Vancouver with his sons in 1989. Together, they started William Kelly & Sons Plumbing in BC, and have lived in the White Rock area ever since. Bill is survived by his wife Margaret Kelly (they shared their 57th wedding anniversary together last March, 2012). He is also survived by his daughter Anne Marie, his two sons: Liam & Anthony, his two sisters: Anne & Josephine, nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son Andrew who passed away in 2002.

WORLD PLUMBING DAY IS MARCH 11TH, 2013 The time has come to celebrate World Plumbing Day! Join us as we celebrate and appreciate those industries and professions that seek to provide us with privileged access to clean drinking water and basic sanitation. Established in 2010, thanks to the efforts of the World Plumbing Council (WPC), World Plumbing Day is dedicated to helping the general public better understand the vital role that the plumbing industry plays in protecting public health and safety, the extent to which it helps limit mankind’s environmental footprint, and other important work performed by contractors, inspectors, installers, engineers, and manufacturers that is often taken for granted. On March 11, 2013, plumbing organizations across the country are joining the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada (MCAC) and the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH) to undertake activities with the aim of raising awareness of the important role played by Canada’s plumbing industry. Show your support on World Plumbing Day by spreading the word and helping raise awareness on behalf of this cause. “Safe clean water and sanitation are a human right. Plumbing is important and plumbers need to be treated as true industry professionals”. -Robert D Burgon, Chairman of World Plumbing Council

Informer Issue #2 February 2013 A NEW BENEFIT FOR MCABC MEMBERS - CREATE AN EMPLOYEE POLICY MANUAL AT A HIGHLY REDUCED COST! MCABC, working in conjunction with CPM Manuals of Vancouver, has just completed a new exclusive Employee Policy Manual program for our members. The fact is; if you have employees, you have employee policies, but if those policies are not carefully reviewed and provided to all employees IN WRITING, you are exposed to all kinds of potential human resources problems. You may not realize how vital a thorough and up-to-date employee policy handbook really is. Without a manual, many businesses have been forced to deal with wrongful dismissal problems, grievances and workplace friction which might otherwise have been avoided. For more than a decade, CPM Manuals has provided businesses from a variety of industries with comprehensive employee policy manuals. They use a unique system that yields an exceptional product quickly and at a fraction of the cost of typical “start-from scratch” consulting solutions. That is why we are introducing you to CPM manuals, a company that can help you develop a customized manual crafted to the specific needs of your company. And the really good news? Through our agreement with CPM Manuals members enjoy the exclusive opportunity to acquire a fully compliant, thorough, customized employee policy created for BC businesses at an exclusive price of $995. This is a discount of $2,000 off the standard commercial price of $2,995. CPM Manuals will also throw in their very thorough “Guide to Preparing an Effective Employee Policy Manual”. This fifteen page copyrighted publication addresses areas such as “What to Expect from a Policy Manual”, “Pitfalls of Putting Workplace Policies in Writing”, “Deciding What to Put In and What to Leave Out” and “Legal Issues” to name a few of the sections. This booklet provides a thorough overview of the HR environment as it relates to company policies and is a valuable tool to anyone considering an employee manual. Contact MCABC to find out how you can take advantage of this opportunity to develop your own employee policy manual by calling 604.205.5058 or email: staff@mcabc.org

Informer Issue #2 February 2013

Island Chapter Dinner Meeting Tuesday, March 26, 2013 Comfort Inn, Victoria (3020 Blanshard Street) Seminar 5:00 pm Dinner, PNP Presentation & Association Updates to follow

Join the MCABC friends and colleagues for 2 great presentations! 1) Tendering, Contracts and the Builder’s Lien Do you know your legal rights and obligations with a construction project, from the tendering phase through to the contract to the end of the project? During the construction process, those legal rights and obligations change and expand based on the contractual relationships between the parties. In order to ensure that a project is built properly, on time and on budget, it is important that all involved know and understand their basic contractual rights and obligations. Tyler Galbraith has been practicing construction law for 10 years with a focus on the law of builder’s liens and construction contracts and the tendering phase. Bring your questions for Tyler and join us. 2) The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) How can the BC PNP program help your business? Join us where a representative from the Economic Immigration Programs Branch of the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism & Skills Training answers our questions and enlighten us on the program for BC.

You might have heard that the Canadian Mint will eliminate the production of the penny later this year ...and who needs pennies anyway?!?!

MCABC is raising awareness and $$$ for the BC Self Advocacy Foundation

About the BC Self Advocacy Foundation The BC Self Advocacy Foundation (BCSAF) is an organization whose sole purpose is to assist people with developmental disabilities to become full, participating citizens in their own communities. Their vision is a future where the voices of people with developmental disabilities are heard and respected. NO MORE BARRIERS! http://bcsaf.org/

How You Can Help the BCSAF Empty your pockets, dump out your drawers, scavenge your car, and collect all of those stray pennies that are cluttering up your space, and send them to MCABC’s penny drive. That annoying loose change can now be put to good use!

Drop them off at our office: #223-3989 Henning Drive (Burnaby) or bring them with you to our next event!
