Games and activities include Walk the Plank, Pin the Eye on the Pirate, and decorating (and eating!) your own scrumptious pirate cupcake. Don’t forget to wear your best pirate costume because your may just win the Best Pirate Contest! Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students or $20 family rate at the door. All proceeds will support production costs of the Dance Repertory Company’s Ballet, Le Corsaire.
MCA in the Community MCA Teams with the MN Marine Art Museum to Offer Visual Arts Camps This summer the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts (MCA) and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) are teaming up to bring you the first annual summer arts camp that celebrates the amazing arts spirit in Winona! This visual arts day camp will offer campers a sampling of three different art forms and will be led by three marvelous working artists. The camp will meet at both MCA and MMAM throughout the week and will culminate with a reception for the families and participants at the MMAM on Friday, June 15th from 5-6 pm. Visual artist, Julie Johnston, will start off the week with a delightful day of drawing. Younger campers will explore different techniques and work on dexterity skills, while older campers will learn ways to capture themselves through self-portraits. Book artist, Jill Krase, will keep the ball rolling with her mind-blowing ways to create books. You'll be gluing, cutting, folding, and even sewing books that are both flat and 3D! Last, but not least, printmaker Bonnie Schetski-Heineman byline will astound campers through the magic of printmaking. Campers will carve [Name] and print a plate as well as experiment with kitchen sink lithography (or collographs). Supplies are included in the cost of the camp, and campers will receive an "official" camp T-shirt! June 11-15, 2012 Section I: 9:00-11:30 a.m. ---For students entering grades 2-4 in the fall of 2012 Section II: 1- 4:30 p.m. ---For students entering grades 5-8 in the fall of 2012 Cost: $100 per camper in Section I $150 per camper in Section II Limit 12 students per section Financial need based scholarships available through MCA. Outreach Events and Performances The students of the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts have had a busy winter and spring performing in and around the Winona community. During the month of February DRC II members, Megan Lynch, Justine Meinke, Laura Schleich, Natalie Schleich, and Calli Jo Wagner performed their ballet piece, Simple Gifts, at the Ready, Set, School! Benefit on February 11 at Winona Middle School. On this same day the adult flute choir performed an arrangement of Cole Porter’s Night and Day at the Annual Wonderful Super Duper Delicious Winona Variety Show. On February 24, MCA’s music faculty, Matthew Byrnes, Dustin Moburg, Mandy Moburg, Marie Stier and flute choir members, Heidi Bryant and Connie Dretske presented a concert for the international students at Cotter’s Residence Hall to teach students various forms of Western music. Upcoming events include the flute choir performing at the Upper Midwest Flute Association concert on April 23rd in Minneapolis and the Winona Area Youth Singers and private lesson students participating in a community outreach performance on April 30th.
The Pirate Ballet is Almost Here! The ballet Le Corsaire, loosely based on a poem by Lord Byron, follows Medora, a beautiful slave girl, and Conrad, a dashing pirate, as they journey through a tapestry of captive maidens, rich sultans, swashbuckling abductions, and dramatic rescues—all culminating in a happy ending. Originally choreographed by Marius Petipa to music by Adolfe Adam, Le Corsaire continues to delight audiences more than 150 years after its premiere. Performances are Apr. 27 – 28, 2012 at Saint Mary's University Page Theatre. Tickets: $10 Adults, $5 Seniors & Students. Please contact the Page Theatre to purchase tickets at 507-457-1715.
Spring and Summer Dance Camps and Classes Looking for ideas for summer dance camps or classes for your kids this summer? MCA will continue to host its summer dance day camps this summer. Dance Me a Story will be for students entering grades K-3 in the Fall and Dance the Day Away for student entering 4-8 . Both of these camps will be held the week of June 25th-29th. These camps are the perfect opportunity for students to learn all about dance, with classes in everything from ballet to modern to costuming and makeup. There will be a FREE final showcase at the end of each camp. NEW classes to look for this spring and summer are Dance for Skaters and Teen and Adult Irish Dance. Dance for Skaters is a wonderful class for figure skaters to focus on artistic skills specific to skating. Our Teen and Adult Irish Dance class will be held in July and is for beginner’s who want to learn rhythmic dance from a different culture. It will be a stomping good time!
National Tap Dance Day Workshops National Tap Dance Day is coming soon and for the first time ever, MCA will have Tap II students performers demonstrating their skills at the National Tap Dance Day performance at the Mall of America on May 20, as well as our advanced tappers. Those students who register for the National Tap Dance Day Workshops this May will have the opportunity to perform in this very special event. Summer Intensive 2012 Auditions MCA Summer Dance Intensive auditions will be held Saturday, March 3rd, 12 - 2 pm at James Sewell Ballet Studio 2A at the Hennepin Center for the Arts in Minneapolis, and on Saturday, March 17th, 12 - 2 pm at MCA'a Valencia Arts Center in Winona. Demonstration Week Parents, family and friends are invited to attend MCA dance classes for Demonstration Week, March 19-24. Come enjoy viewing the talents and hard work students have put in during the fall semester. This is also an excellent time for younger students to observe advanced classes or other dance genres they may be interested in. Light refreshments will be served in the lobby following classes.
Music Division News Spring Music Division Concert Creative Music and Movement Creative Music and Movement Classes will be returning for the Spring session! This class is the perfect opportunity for your three or four year old to experience the basics of dance and music classes! In these classes students will learn the basics of music such as identifying the differences between loud and soft, high and low, different types of voices, as well as learning many songs, keeping a steady beat and playing various instruments. In the dance portion, students will experience an introduction to the dance class setting including the use of levels, rhythm and tempo, principles of movement, and creative and imaginative play. This class is also offered opposite Nia, an adult fitness class. If you are a busy parent and never seem to find time for yourself, this could be the class for you! Get fit while your kids are enjoying singing and dancing!
MCA’s music students will be presenting their annual spring music concert in the Valéncia Arts Center Recital Hall on Monday, April 23rd at 7:00 pm. The concert will include outstanding individual performances by our private lesson students, as well as our Winona Area Youth Singers and by Flutistry, MCA’s adult flute choir. Come support our wonderful, young musicians in an incredible night of music! Admission: FREE for students, $10 for adults at the door. Financially need based admission waivers are available in the office upon request. Returning Spring/Summer Music Classes and Camps MCA will be offering a variety of music classes and camps this Spring for students of all ages. Returning classes this Spring will be Music Explorers I offered during the month of May. MCA will again hold Chamber Music Camp for wind and string students entering 6th-10h grade in the Fall. This is a great chance to perform in a small ensemble with like instrument. Chamber Music Camp will be held July 23-27. New this May is a music class to teach young students (grades 3-6) the basics of musical theatre. The Music Man Junior is a class that will primarily focus on the musical aspects of musical theatre. At the end of this session students will perform, in an informal demonstration, the Music Man Junior for family and friends. Private Music Instruction Has your child ever wanted to learn an instrument or to become more proficient on one they are already playing? MCA offers private music instruction with highly qualified teachers in a positive, safe environment. ANNOUNCEMENTS Congratulations! Congratulations to MCA piano instructor, Aleah Harvey and her husband, Chris, on the birth of their baby girl. The baby and family are happy and well. Students of the Month Congratulations to our January Student of the Month, WAYS member, Lucy Wilfahrt and to our February Students of the Month; dance student Emily Strom, music student, Ryan Ortega and visual art student, Cooper Hancock! These students earned this award by attending all their classes on time, following classroom etiquette and demonstrated a strong work ethic. Great work!
Weather Cancellation Policy If winter weather occurs in our area, MCA cancels classes and rehearsals only when Winona School District 861 closes early, cancels after school activities or cancels school for the day. Two snow days have been worked into the semester tuition. Make up classes will be held for classes that are cancelled more than twice during the semester. Adult Wellness Program MCA will continue offering the adult programming tuition free in the May and Summer sessions for parents who have students enrolled in an MCA dance, music or visual art class. Now you can enjoy a dance or music class of your own while your kids are taking their own class or lesson. Adult programming classes include Nia, Clogging, Power Piyo, Teen and Adult Ballet, Teen and Adult Tap and Jazz, Teen and Adult Irish Dance, Guitar Class, Adult Flute Choir, and Drawing for the Still Life.
