St. Jude receives 2009 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award MEMPHIS, Tenn. – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the 2009 recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. This is the nation’s highest presidential honor for organizational performance excellence in a number of areas including: leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, measurement and more. President Barack Obama presented the award to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital director and CEO William E. Evans, at the National Outstanding Leadership Award Gala at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington on Feb. 28. St. Jude was selected for the award out of 84 applicants, which were thoroughly evaluated by a private board of examiners. The evaluation process included about 1,000 hours of review and an onsite visit to clarify questions and verify information in the applications. “This organization has made great strides to better the life of thousands of children all over the world,” Obama said at the award presentation. “The hospital exhibited outstanding innovation with its research,
a world class staff and diligence to create a hopeful environment for children with catastrophic diseases.” St. Jude is just the third nonprofit organization to receive this great honor. The recipient categories were expanded from manufacturers, health care organizations and small businesses to include nonprofit organizations in 2007. “I have never been more proud and honored to be a part of the St. Jude team,” Evans said. “It brings a tear to my eye to see that everything our founder, Danny Thomas, had ever dreamed of has come true, along with so much more.” The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality award was named after Malcolm Baldrige, the 26th secretary of commerce. Congress established the Baldrige Award in 1987 to enhance the competitiveness and performance of U.S. businesses. “We hope to continue to be a successful organization and continue our mission to save lives,” Evans said.
