COM 381  |  Spring  2012  |  Media  Kit  project  (Project  2)  |  100  Points   DUE:  April  4  (Wednesday)  at  the  beginning  of  the  class.     For  this  project,  you  will  develop  a  media  kit  (sometimes  called  as  a  press  packet)  either  on   diverse  student  body  in  Communication  Journalism  Department  (Commitment  to  Diversity)/   WSYC/  Modern  Language  Department/  PR  education  in  Communication  Journalism   Department/  a  student  organization.  The  goal  of  this  project  is  to  have  you  apply  your  skills  in   InDesign  and  Photoshop  in  creative  and  professional  manner.                 Media  kit  project  must  contain  the  following  four  items  (25  points  will  automatically  be   deducted  for  each  missing  piece):           • Fact  sheet/FAQs  (8.5  x  11,  portrait  orientation,  both  side,  use  image  and/or   infographics)     • Postcard  (7x5  in,  landscape  orientation,  both  side  or  one  side)     • Flyer  (8.5  x  11  in,  portrait  orientation)     • Brochure  (3-­‐fold,  8.5  X  11  in,  two  page/both  side,  landscape  orientation)   Guidelines/  Evaluation  Criteria     Content  (40  Points)     Gathering  information  and  pictures:  You  need  to  use  original  images,  graphic  and  text.  You  can   collaborate  on  collecting  information  and  pictures  with  your  classmates  who  are  also  assigned   to  cover  the  same  topic.     If  you  have  information  for  brochure/fact  sheet,  then  you  can  use  important/essential  ones  for   postcards  and  flyers.  Explore  the  examples  that  I  have  posted  on  D2L  and,  also,  look  for   more  work  sample  on  the  Internet  related  to  your  subject  matter  to  get  an  idea  what   content  you  should  include  in  promotional  publications.  You  need  to  use  original  quote(s)   in  at  least  one  of  the  documents.  Yes,  you  need  to  interview  at  least  a  concerned  person  for   information  and  quote(s).                   Creating  graphics:      You  will  need  to  create  graphics  for  layout  and/or  texture  and  logo  as   appropriate  to    your  design  theme.     Logo:  In  case,  an  organization  you  are  working  on  has  a  logo,  you  need  to  take  their   permission  to  use  it  in  your  media  kit  project.  An  evidence  of  their  permission  (email  or   formal  letter)  needs  to  be  attached  with  the  media  kit  project.     Layout:    Use  the  “layout.indd”  document  for  your  media  kit  items;    

Writing: Your  final  media  kit  must  be  free  of  typos  and  grammatical  errors     Design    (50  Points)   This  project  will  require  you  to  make  many  design  decisions.  I  am  not  going  to  tell  you  what   fonts  or  photos  to  use.  However,  these  are  all  crucial  decisions  and  you  should  put  thought   into  all  the  design  decisions  based  on  message,  audience  and  medium.     • Attractive  design  theme  reflective  of  your  topic/subject     • Attractive  and  appropriate  color  choices  and  its  effective  execution  (you  must  use  color   in  every  media  kit  document)       • Unified  theme  throughout  four  media  kit  materials  (Each  of  the  four  pieces  fits  the   design  theme,  yet  could  function  as  a  standalone  item)     • Use  logo  and  an  image  (either  computer  graphics  or  a  picture)  on  every  media  kit   material   • Appropriate  font  choices     • Overall  typography  design  (Well-­‐organized  content  clean  and  professional  design)     • Good  use  of  design  principles  (alignment,  proportion,  proximity,  contrast,  repetition)     • Appropriate  and  attractive  use  of  logo,  photos  and  computer  graphics   • Provide  proper  attribution  if  you  need  to  use  any  information  and  picture  from  another   source  either  at  the  bottom  of  the  document  or  as  a  photo  credit  (whichever  is   appropriate)         • All  items  must  be  legible     Hints:  Fact  sheet  and  brochure  are  usually  text-­‐heavy  but  make  good  use  of  pictures  and   computer  graphics  in  these  two  publications.  Flyer  and  postcard  need  to  be  visually   interesting,  with  few  essential  text.       Submission  format  -­‐  both  electronic  and  printed  format  (10  points)   • You  will  hand  in  a  package  of  items  including  printed  color  documents  of  all  four  items   (Fact  sheet,  Postcard,  Flyer,  Brochure);  Place  everything  in  a  9  x  12-­‐in  envelope.  Do   NOT  staple  the  pages  together;  Write  your  name  and  media  kit  subject  on  the  envelop;     • Submit  electronic  file  (InDesign  document)  in  D2L  Dropbox  (folder:  project2).  Save   your  InDesign  document  as  “firstname-­‐lastname-­‐mediakit.indd”
