Explore History at Georgia’s Old Governor’s Mansion

Located on the Georgia College campus, Georgia’s Old Governor’s Mansion was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973 and is an accredited museum of the American Alliance of Museums. In 2015, the Mansion was named an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Georgia’s Old Governor’s Mansion serves as an historic house museum whose mission is to care for, collect, interpret and exhibit items (including artifacts, structures and gardens) that illustrate the history of the site and its inhabitants during the years the Mansion was the official residence of Georgia’s governors (1893 - 1868). Tours focus on the history of the building, its occupants both free and enslaved, and the myriad complexities of Antebellum society in Georgia and its history. Office Chat Hi everyone! I’m Anna Meeks and I joined the Chamber team this past June. I spent my summer revamping the Reality Check Program and learning even more about what makes Milledgeville so great. I’m a freshman at Georgia College, a pre-nursing major, and a “Mocal,” as all of my Georgia College friends say. I’ve lived here my whole life and loved Milledgeville so much that I decided to attend Georgia College after graduating from John Milledge Academy this past Spring. I was thrilled to join the Chamber team this past Summer, and the fun hasn’t stopped yet! I thought I knew everything about Milledgeville, but there’s always something new and exciting happening. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me here at the Chamber! Looking forward to meeting everyone soon,

Anna

The Adventures of Milly the Owl

I just had the most wonderful day in my favorite town! I woke up on Friday and decided to go get breakfast. I hopped in the car and tuned in to 97 Big FM so that I could jam out all the way there! My day is always better when it starts with my favorite tunes. I arrived at Chick-fil-A and grabbed some delicious coffee and hashbrowns to fuel my day! I had a birthday party to attend later, so a good breakfast was a must. My first stop was Tipsy’s Liquor Store to pick up a birthday gift for my friend. They helped me find the perfect wine and I was back on my way! As I was driving off, I noticed that my car was starting to make a funny sound. I decided to drive over to Pittman Automotive to get everything checked out, just to be safe. My car was fixed so quickly that I was able to stay on schedule and get back on the road in a jiffy! I was about to head to the party when my roommate called me and told me that our sink was leaking! I called my friends at LAV Plumbing and they said that they were on their way. I was almost home when I got the call that the sink was already fixed and I was good to go! Despite all the unexpected events, I was still on time for the party. But wait! It was my job to bring the Pizza! I zoomed over to Little Caesars and they helped me load up my trunk with lots of hot-and-ready cheese pizzas. I started driving towards my friends house and passed lots of new construction on the way. It looks like Seller’s Construction is building more beautiful stores near my friend’s house! I bet she’ll be so excited when they’re finished! At last I arrived at the party! The best part was that her brand new pool had just been finished by Fowler-Flemister Concrete, so we were able to enjoy our pizza pool-side! I am so thankful to live in a town with so many great businesses that are always willing to lend a helping hand! Milly 14 MBConnect

Central Georgia Healthcare Alliance

In August, Dawn Williams discussed how BB&T@Work can set financial wellness in motion for your company, helping to reduce stress levels and improve productivity to impact your bottom line. In September, Carolyn Renko of the Social Security Administration joined us to discuss retirement planning, account management, and important updates to the social security account system. By staying up to date on the status of social security benefits, attendees were better able to make plans for their financial future.

The Central Georgia Healthcare Alliance was formed from the Baldwin Coalition and seeks to provide insight into each aspect of healthcare and wellness for those in attendance. In August, the Georgia HEART Hospital Program shared it’s mission of helping rural and critical access hospitals to provide healthcare to thousands of Georgians. In September, Community Health Care Systems brought their mobile unit to the meeting to discuss it’s functions and benefits.

in Milledgeville Starting in August, Milledgeville had the priviledge of hosting the Georgia Forward Young Gamechangers in our city. The group aims to identify our biggest struggles as a community and come up with unique and innovative ways to resolve these struggles. The group began with a comprehensive tour of the city to get better aquainted with the area. Afterwards, everyone was broken in to four focus groups based on different challenge areas. These included branding and signage, retirement, education, and economic development. The Chamber is thrilled to see what new ideas come out of this great program when the GeorgiaForward Young Gamechangers return in October!

Small Business Workshop Last quarter, Clay Teague, CGTC Director, joined us on June 23rd to lead a four part workshop that dealt with social media, hidden excel features, facebook in business, and making a great presentation. Clay led each of the classes through hour long sessions going into detail about how each topic can affect your business. We had a great turnout at each session and our members got to enjoy breakfast and lunch as the day progressed. Excel Features was the most attended session and our members learned about many hidden tools within the program that can improve efficiency in their businesses. Please join us for our next small business workshop in the Chamber board room for more hands-on learning. If you would like to present or host a workshop in the future, please contact us today.

On August 24th, the Chamber celebrated it’s new relationship with the Leadership Baldwin program at the GMC Legislative Chamber. Alumni were invited to attend and meet the incoming class beginning the program this Fall. The evening was filled with great new connections between Alumni and the new Leadership Baldwin Class , allowing a transfer of knowledge and experience from the previous group to the next. The Chamber is thrilled to be able to continue the legacy of Leadership Baldwin, which was originally established in 1981 as a means of building future leaders and a place where individuals can involve themselves in the community. Kara Lassiter, the director of the program, believes that Leadership Baldwin helps these up and coming leaders “find different ways that they can get more involved with non-profits or organizations within the community.” We are so excited to see this class grow and learn so that their impact on Baldwin County is felt for years to come.
