2014 BUILDING FOUNDATIONS AUCTION- THE START OF A TRADITION
or the first time in almost 20 years, the Master Builders Association held a public auction to benefit its operations. In addition, a special “Raise the Paddle” was held to support. Rebuilding Together South Sound. The auction committee worked long and hard over a very short 12 week period to make it happen, and on May 16, it did! With over 100 people purchasing tickets, the event featured more than 75 silent auction items and 19 live auction items, ranging from trips to international resorts to tool chests to spa packages and more. One attendee said “I heard many –many MANY compliments about quality of auction pieces for both silent and live auction.” Every single item sold, exceeding budget expectations and helping to fund MBA’s operations in 2014 and 2015. The highlight of the evening, however, was the Raise the Paddle for Rebuilding Together South Sound (RTSS.) Debra FayneThomas, a veteran herself who is both a past RTSS recipient and also a current RTSS Board member, spoke movingly about her experience with RTSS and how it has completely transformed her life. In addition, veterans services were highlighted in a video showing the good RTSS can do in our communities. May paddles were raised to benefit RTSS. When the math was done, $8,050 had been generously donated by attendees. Since RTSS is able to multiply donation dollars by four, that equates to $32,200 in services donated! Thank you 2014 Building Foundations Auction Committee: Chairs Laureen Skrivan Cathi Mahan Susie Nelson, Jill Ginn, Billie Jo Hyland, and procurement elves Duke York, Gary Patterson, Rick Hjelm and Kurt Wilson.

JUNE IS NATIONAL HOMEOWNERSHIP MONTH
omeownership is the foundation of the American Dream. Homeownership builds stronger communities, provides a solid foundation for family and personal achievement and improves the quality of life for millions of people.
Homeownership is a major driver of the U.S. economy. The nation’s housing and homeownership policies over the last century have contributed to the growth of the middle class and helped the United States become the most dynamic economy the world has ever seen. 15 percent of the U.S. economy relies on housing economic impact.
Impact of Home Building in Pierce County* Over $83 million of income can be attributed to actual development, construction, and sale of these homes. $11.7 million was collected by local governments directly related to taxes and fees paid for home construction. $4.3 million will be collected each year in taxes and charges paid by new home buyers.
A healthy housing industry means more jobs and a stronger economy. Home building increases the property tax base that supports local schools and communities. Housing, like no other sector, is “Made in America.” Most of the products used in home construction and remodeling are manufactured here in the United States. In a recent study of Pierce County housing market, economist Dr. Elliot Eisenberg found that throughout

the State of Washington, homebuilding brings in $828.1 million in taxes and revenue for the government the year homes are built, while only costing $272.8 million in current expenditures (public services) and capital investment. Additionally, each year following construction and occupation, the state sees $198.5 million in revenue due to the homes, while only expending $192.8 million per year on providing services. Over a 15 year period, the homes bring in a total of $3.6 billion to government while costing less than $3 billion in expenses, capital investments, and interest on debt. That leaves an overall profit of $622.9 million dollars to government. The 15 year rate of return is even greater in Pierce County than in most of the state. While spending $50.5 million on expenses, capital investments, and interest on debt, local governments in Pierce County collect $79.3 million, bringing the total profit to local Pierce County governments to $29 million.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE
Universal Building Permit Application Form and Multi-Jurisdictional Base Plan Approval Process: MBA Pierce has been working with local governments to create 1) a single building permit application form that could be used at local governments throughout our area, and 2) a way for builders to submit a house plan for full review one time, and have other cities or the County accept that review with just a “light” review by their own staff. So far Tacoma and Pierce County will be participating in this process which will be going live in May. MBA staff will provide more information on which jurisdictions will be involved and how the process will work.

Tacoma: Councilmember Marty Campbell met with the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce on April 21st to inform the group that he was asked by an organization called Healthy Tacoma to set up a task force to create a mandatory paid sick leave legislation in Tacoma. Councilmember Campbell suggested to the group that by being involved in a task force, the business community may be able to create a piece of legislation that can be easier to live with. The councilmember also Bonney Lake: Bonney Lake recently stated his concern that if the business community did passed an ordinance updating the not come to the table for this task force, Healthy Tacoma permit fee section of the city’s code would likely take the issue straight to the ballot and may and will be using the most current piggyback the $15 minimum wage issue on to the bill. version of the ICC Building Valuation The Chamber decided to do a poll of residents to see Table along with a 3% technology fee.
